What can I say? Tangle & Whisper's mini-series had me by the balls. Can't wait to dive into the Metal Virus. In any case, here's a voice cast I've had in mind when reading the comic original characters:

"Christine Marie Cabanos as Tangle The Lemur" - Many fan casters tend to focus on Tangle as a sporty tomboy and think of a raspy voice not unlike Rainbow Dash or Amethyst. This isn't bad but I found myself thinking outside the box when I was revisiting Kill La Kill and its bombass dub at the time. Christine's Mako Makanshoku had just the kind of energy and cocksure that Tangle would have as a rookie to the Resistance.

Mind you, she would even out the pitch to sound closer to a young adult/older teen that the characters tend to (mostly) come across as but no less hyperactive like Mako when the moment calls for it. Additionally, Christine could dip more into her Madoka Kaname performance to capture her more emotional side, particularly when Whisper lets her in on what happened to the Diamond Cutters. It would make for a great range that toes the line just like Tangle has in terms of being somewhat obnoxious but not in a "Scrappy Doo" kind of way.

"Erica Mendez as Whisper The Wolf" - Erica would play her not too unlike her soft-spoken Retsuko (barring Heavy Metal scenes played by an actual Heavy Metal singer) but in a consistently hushed tone. However, moments where she's emotionally devastated like fearing losing Tangle or... losing Tangle would be where her performances as Atsuko Kagari from Little Witch Academia and Gon from Hunter X Hunter come in.

It would work well with his raising of Surge and Kit with his callous use of his Hypno Glove.

"Sarah Anne Williams as Surge The Tenrec" - Anybody who's heard her performance as Nonon Jakuzure and Tifa from FFVII Machinamabridged will know that Sarah can do punk. She just needs to ramp up the gruffness if only to see Surge as a homegrown teenage with major issues.

"Johnny Yong Bosch as Kitsunami The Fennec" - Johnny may be known for his Super Saiyans, bounty hunters on the run and Anime pretty boys but his performance as Doraemon's Nobita as well as Yokai Watch's Nate shows that he can do timid young boy. Kit being the Tails to Surge's Sonic makes it a perfect fit.

These questions always have me like... do I know 10 of anything?

The order doesn't indicate anything, I will number them to keep track.

Gunnerkrigg Court by Tom Siddell- I could write that I love it because it has Coyote and end there because that'd be enough. But I also like so many of the characters Annie, Kat, Shadow and Robot, and Parley and Smit and like so so many of the characters. And most of all I love the world building and the story. God how amazingly it is set up.

Digger by Ursula Vernon- The black and white art style is stunning. The story and world building are just so so amazing. My inner anthropology enthusiast connects very deeply with this anthropology coded comic. And also it has Grim Eyes, and Ed and Shadow Child.

Blame! by Nihei Tsutomu - This is still the most beautiful comic I've seen. Idk what about it resonates with me so much but I regularly just like to open volumes at random and look at it. The concept is good too, don't get me wrong. And it's like a 10 vol manga that kinda has like 2 characters that matter and most pages don't have any dialogue or writing at all...

Every single piece of Kon Satoshi's - literally everything that man made is amazing. It's beautiful for one. But also everything he made was about perception of reality. About how reality is formed from the subjective human mind. How it is formed from imperfect memory and lack of full knowledge because it's impossible to have all the information. etc. He hasn't made much, his life was cut far too short. You can watch everything in a week and you should.

The Pillow Book by Sei Shounagon - This book is such a vibe. Shounagon can be subtle yet savage. It's a very easy read too, it's very relaxing. And you can just open it at random and read a bit and just enjoy its beauty.

Hunter x Hunter by Togashi Yoshihiro - It traumatised me, I haven't recovered since. It has permanently merged with my consciousness. It includes Gon and Killua and many other characters I love and very neat writing and a bs power system that's absolutely amazing.

Jujutsu Kaisen by Akutami Gege - It traumatised me, I haven't recovered since. It has permanently merged with my consciousness. It includes Yuuji and Kenjaku and some very neat writing and some frustrating writing and a bs power system that's absolutely amazing.

Parenthesis by Élodie Durand - It's one of the best uses of comic as a medium I've ever seen. The theme in itself is very much up my alley because it's about memory, and perception and the mind. But the way it uses comic... I don't think this story could've been told in any other medium, or if it was it just wouldn't be so much...

Mononoke (2007) by Toei Animation - Fuck me it's beautiful. I'm very not normal when it comes to textile art and it's like textile art but anime... And the stories are fucking amazing. It has a whole story about koudou the traditional art of incense ... There's nothing better than this.

The Duchess (2008) - It's a very entertaining fanfiction about the fascinating woman that was Georgiana Cavendish. Her biography is also a very good read but heavier, but also more nuanced. And Keira Knightley and Hayley Atwell are amazing in it. Plus the visuals...

Dick - another fav of my teen self; Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa - it's about fashion and has fun characters just not George XD; Velvet Goldmine - the queerness and the fashion.

Well, I don't have the very first stories I wrote on a computer anymore because they died when the old family desktop did, but I have brought all my files along with me ever since I got my own laptop for college, so let's go have a peek in my oldest folders...

From Star Wars:

Ooh look, here's Baby Tathrin's Very Mature And Not-At-All Mary-Sue-ish Lengthy Backstory Novel for Rhysati Ynr, who deserved so much more character development and screentime than Rogue Squadron gave her and I'll do it myself if I have to, dammit, fic... Yeah, I still think Rhys deserved more story-time, but I'm definitely never going back to that fic because I'm not thirteen anymore XD

Bounty Hunter's Winter, which was supposed to be a young-Boba-Fett-grudgingly-teams-up-with-Sheltay-Retrac-in-Clone-Wars/Purge-Era and then timeskips to juxtapose with an-experienced-Boba-Fett-grudgingly-teams-up-with-a-young-Winter-in-Rebellion-Era fic that basically just existed to show How Fucking Competent all three of them were. There's nothing wrong with this one, it's just not got enough framework/point to be interesting going back to now.

Padmé Jedi Prequels is the working-title for a what-if? re-writing of the Prequel Trilogy where Padmé, you guessed it, was a Jedi too. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon still get sent to deal with the Trade Federation over Naboo, but Obi-Wan has been recently Knighted and Padmé is Qui-Gon's new Padawan. I do like what I have written for this one, but it would be a LOT of work to write the rest of it (basically: everything between "landing on Tatooine" and "the ending scenes w/ the Purge"), and the canon has changed sooooo much since I started working on it that I'd either have to re-work a lot of details or just throw my hands up and go "this is pre-Clone Wars tv show continuity reconstructed from memory, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!" and know that everyone, including me, is going to be so fucking confused lmao.

From Lord of the Rings:

Okay I'm so glad you asked this question mainly for this answer, because I had completely forgotten I ever did this, but: apparently back when I was in college, I started writing a story where a portion of the Fellowship along with Elrond's kids, Faramir, Éowyn, and Éomer were all re-embodied (in the case of the mortals and Arwen) or sent from Aman (in the case of the elf, half-elves, and dwarf) to go deal with some Terrible New Threat by...pretending to be Normal Modern Humans Undercover In College, I guess??? The only things I ever wrote for it were the intro, an "everybody tries to figure out how modern clothing works in a big department store and it's a Disaster, thank goodness they have Éowyn there to wrangle everyone" scene, a snippet of Legolas and Gimli being Very Good At Acting Like Humans on a balcony and annoying Aragorn, and Legolas nearly having a stroke when a bartender serves Gimli and not him, because "he's clearly old enough, but you look way too young; sorry kid try again when you have a better fake ID."

I've also got an ancient Three Hunters get pulled into the Star Wars universe post-War of the Rings when Artoo and Threepio's escape pod lands in Gondor instead of Tatooine story that I can't imagine I'll ever touch again, but does admittedly have some amusing (if very painfully Old Writing) bits written for it, so that was nice to look at (and wince over) again.

Also there's this, of course.

From the X-Men Comics:

A fanfic about a New Excalibur Team being formed that actually has (if I do say so myself, and I will) an excellent beginning, but which I failed to write-down the Actual Planned Plot of, and now I can no longer remember wtf I was going to do with the damn story, so it's probably never going to get any further since that's uhhh. kind of an important part of Writing A Story lmao.

One where Illyana gets shunted back to Mythical Camelot somehow when she dies during Inferno, irritates/distresses Merlin, befriends both Guienevere and Mordred, annoys Morgan le Fay, learns some advanced magic, and eventually has to help destroy Mordred to save everyone else; only then does she find her way back to the present, and comes back to life several years after her younger self has died of the Legacy Virus to be re-united with Kitty and the New Mutants. Given that in the (many) years since I started that fic, Illyana already has been resurrected it's uhhh. kind of a moot point of a story now lol.

Also there's surely some half-started Potter stories sitting around here that idk if I'll ever feel the urge to touch again (Green-Eyed Snake included). Maybe the burst of celebration I'll feel the day she just self-combusts from all that hate and finally just fucking dies will be inspiring...

Writing, definitely; although I've read a lot more fic in the past few months than I'd read for years, and I'm enjoying it mightily (navigating on AO3 is sooooooooooo much better than trying to slog through FFnet and livejournal and geocities omgggggg I can actually find good stories now, what is this witchcraft???).

gwen stacey- admittedly haven't read any of her comics but i do plan on changing that. like her character a lot in the spiderverse movies albeit her fans can be really annoying. it was just announced in her most recent comic run that she's supposed to be permanently staying in earth 616 (miles' current world). the homies on spiderverse twit aren't too keen on that. mainly because they see that this is going to lead the writers to pairing up miles and gwen in this run. problem is is that miles' is already in a relationship with tiana toomes. there's a very vocal subsection of the spiderverse fandom that has a visceral hatred for seeing miles; be it in the comics, video game, or animated movies, paired off with a black girl. some of it is due to unfamiliarity with these other female characters. but if we gon keep it a buck its mostly misogynoir. im kinda going off on a tangent, this is less about gwen and more about fandom perception of her. its kinda hard to go in depth about characters you like as opposed to characters you dislike. but to sum it up i think she's great i think shes cool, her being rock star is super slay and she's got a bomb ass costume. no notes.

xmen- haven't read any comics tbh my main knowledge of x men comes from fandom osmosis and the live action movies + x men evolution (best x men animated series do NOT @ me). um a take i'd say is, they should like give the logan jean scott thing a rest. in general i've never been keen on the wolverine/cyclops beefing for leadership thing. i think the way cyclops' character be handled in general is kinda wack cause i thought he was so cool in evolution but every other media rep of him past and present goes out of their way to make him an unlikable asshole or boring. idk give this nigga something to else to do.

Things That Inspire Me (1): Anime

(Basically an infodump so...yeah)

[Some spoilers for some anime, including:

→ Hunter x Hunter (Chimera Ant Arc)

→ JoJo (Part 2 Battle Tendency)

So, uh, I have been waiting for some time to do this. It's exactly what it says on the tin.

Ever since I have started creating, I noticed a few things that constantly inspire me and influence my works. Actually, they have had an effect on me even before I started writing for real, but I have only noticed the patterns recently.

I have selected two things that inspire me the most, and I will be writing about them in the following posts separately.

I just would like to put these thoughts on paper, to the best of my ability...and maybe share them with anyone who would put up with my serious and probably incoherent infodumping be interested...

Alright! So. Yeah. Anime. You saw it right.

I have to admit, I am not a big weeb at all. Even among, say, Duck fans, I am nowhere near being the biggest "nerd x weeb" in the community. I am not the most up-to-date, nor am I the most devoted viewer (for one I am an anime-only trash pls don't hurt me). There must be other fans who are also interested in both anime and cartoons; and in that circle, there must be people who are more knowledgeable in either/both of the fields than I am.

But within my rather narrow, shallow and niche interests, some anime that I know really influence my creations, consciously and subconsciously. And di molto! by quite a lot, too.

From the examples I have gathered, I think what anime fascinates me - and offers me as a creator - is a vivid, detailed, all-rounded showcase of how to portray a scene. One anime scene of a few minutes can already cover descriptions in multiple aspects:

The expressions, the gestures, the actions, the voice acting, the monologues and dialogues, the environment and the atmosphere...

(Anime music also plays a huge part in shaping the scene, but that will be discussed in the next passage as a stand-alone inspiration.)

Of course, those things I have listed above are not exclusive to anime. They are utilised in all sorts of performing arts, such as other forms of animation, comics, video games, live actions, and more.

However, what I find anime almost uniquely excels in is the portray of emotional scenes. Intensely emotional scenes.

This is getting a bit vague (even as I am writing it's difficult to word it), so let's get into some examples. These are anime scenes that I really like, and that I take quite a heavy inspiration from. Intensely emotional scenes are some of my favourites, yet they are really hard for me to put on paper (That's why I always tell myself to go read some light novels lol). These anime scenes provide me with an example of how to write it right.

If I could quote only one example in the entire passage, I would choose this in a heartbeat.

This single scene from Hunter x Hunter has inspired me more than any others have - and probably - could. Immensely powerful and unique, I have yet to see another scene as well done as this is in any forms of animation.

Gon's rage is the perfect exemplar in portraying extreme anger and sadness (i.e. Things that an angst person like me really like). Almost every possible emotion you need when portraying an extremely angry and/or sad person is there, as well as the transitions between emotional states.

There is hysterical rage as well as seething anger, accompanied by feelings of sadness, hatred, unjust, guilt, helplessness...and madness. I especially admire Gon's expressions at the beginning and the end of the scene: That outwardly calm, silent anger which is on the verge of exploding in actuality. This quiet, subtle feeling of anger is something I absolutely love (and, again, yet to see better portrayed than in HxH); yet is very hard to write about (because it's, you know, subtle). Hopefully, one day, I can do it justice.

The next is a rather new anime to me (even though it's probably the oldest discussed in this passage), but has had a disproportionally important effect in my inspiration. (and also something I'm a bit embarrassed to admit liking)

Yes. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. And a scene from the Higurashi poster girl of craziness. (Even that thumbnail is...quite something)

Higurashi showcases...well, craziness. Which, crazily, is another emotion I like to write about. (Especially with Donald, if you have read one of my stories from November of last year you will know)

The scene above only showcases a part of craziness in Higurashi, in my favourite arcs of Watanagashi/Meakashi. I have chosen that as it is one of the most iconic (and relatively...non-violent) scenes.

Although they aren't all contained in a single scene, Higurashi portrays multiple kinds of craziness: Crazily angry, crazily sad, crazily happy, crazily scared, crazily calm, crazily agitated...and the transitions between.

(There is another example that may better showcase these, but I think it may be...too violent...

It's a very iconic scene in (this chapter of) Higurashi, too.)

One thing I really like about the craziness in Higurashi, is the portray of pure craziness. I have yet to see another anime portray craziness as raw as Higurashi does (or I just haven't watched enough crazy anime yet).

Once they go crazy, you can really see them lose it all. They aren't completely crazy in the head (i.e. They won't become stupid, like how Shion still manages to form a murder plan), but they are completely crazy in the heart. And they still keep their original goals (e.g. Staying alive, finding/avenging a lover, protecting own happiness); it's just that the methods they are using to achieve those goals are now extreme and irrational.

On a side note: Although this isn't the main thing I get from Higurashi, another aspect I also draw inspiration from Higurashi is the bittersweetness, a (relatively) happy ending after a long conflict.

Of all the bittersweetness in the franchise, I especially love the one at the end of Higurashi Sotsu (yes I know you guys hate that series), after all the fighting between you-know-who. I actually like the ending and the resolution: After all the overblown argument, violence, bloodshed and madness, what eventually helps to resolve everything is a conversation between the two, and advice from others.

In the words of a fellow commenter on a video of that scene: "You can't just fight it out; you have to talk it out." Know what the other person is thinking, understand it, and work together to try to make each other happy. In the end, you may get what you want / they may get what they want / both of you get what you want / neither of you get what you want.

But what matters is reaching an understanding, and accept the best possible outcome there is, even if it isn't - and mostly won't be - a perfect ending.

(ah this is starting to go off topic. also I feel irresponsible to insert a clip for this one, cause it would spoil everything, especially for a murder-mystery anime.

you'll get who I am talking about if you have reached Sotsu, and will know which scene I am talking about if you have finished Sotsu.)

Finally, here are some miscellaneous anime scenes that I also enjoy and draw inspiration from. I put these in a "misc" category because...I don't really know how to categorise them otherwise. "Very sad scenes"? "Feels scenes"? These aren't very unique at all, but I do still use them as references subconsciously.

I really like Caesar's speech there. The delivery is absolutely phenomenal (even if the VA isn't that famous, which is something I really like about Japanese voice-acting), and of course Araki's sentences are fire as well.

(Seriously, JoJo has the most _____ (insert any adjective) scenes all in one anime. You've got this, and then also "NIGERUNDAYO" and "I'VE BROUGHT TEQUILA ♡")

There are more awesome JoJo scenes from different parts (all are death scenes for some reason), but I don't want to spam this passage with Youtube links. Examples include Bruford (part 1) and Wamuu (part 2).

This scene was legit iconic back then. It may seem...melodramatic now, but it is still one of my favourite anime scenes. Again, the delivery and the wording of the dialogues are absolutely stunning. In terms of feels, this really hits the hardest.

AIR actually has 50% inspired a story idea of mine (a WIP technically, but it's on hold for now _(:3 」∠)_). It's a Gladstone story, about his relationship with his cousin Fethry who has gone..."missing". Not sure why I have related AIR to this, but I guess it's because of the depiction of familial love in the anime (even though AIR is technically a romance, I personally see "family" as the main theme).

Particularly, Haruko and Misuzu's relationship. I've got another scene about that, which I will simply link below without commentary.

(A little bit of an appendix and a shout-out: Although I don't know how to put it in the main passage, I have to mention this when talking about the influence of anime on me.

Makoto Shinkai's works have been a huge inspiration to me ever since I first watched his "5 Centimetres Per Second", although "Your Name" is my favourite so far. Other than being absolutely visually stunning, they have had an influence on me, both in and outside writing.

I can't pinpoint what exactly I get from his works (I don't really write romance and am not romantic at all), but I think it is the idea of relationships. Not necessarily romantic relationships, but just people meeting people. The wonder yet fickleness of relationships: How people could enter your life and completely change it all of a sudden, yet they could leave and disappear just as suddenly.

This theme is something I really like to see being portrayed, as well as a theme I like to use in my own stories.

This blog will primarily consist of snapshots from the comics I read, and a review of the comic series after reading it (whenever I get around to making some). I’m a relatively new comic reader, having started reading comics in Jan. 2022, so please be patient with me if I’m not able to discuss a story or character in great detail due to lack of full context. However, I wanted to share my love for the media and hopefully meet other avid comic readers!

This probably doesn’t need to be said, but disclaimer: my opinion pieces are my opinions. They may not agree with yours and that’s okay. Feel free to discuss why you agree or disagree!

My rating scale works on a scale of 7. The assigned number is my estimated feeling about the comic:

1 — I did not enjoy this at all 2 — There are some salvageable parts but it wasn’t worth my time 3 — It had a decent story but was kinda forgettable 4 — The story was good 5 — I enjoyed it overall and might reread in the future 6 — I would easily read this again immediately and highly recommend it to others 7 — I adore this comic and will probably not shut up talking about it

Why a best out of 7 rating? Because best out of 5 wasn’t enough and best out of 10 was too many.
