‭Romans 6:4 NLT‬
[4] For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.
NLT
I can't pretend this is the beginning of my walk with Christ, but perhaps this is a new chapter and a different calling than I've experienced before.
The work of Christ is already done 'Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.” '
And then with this becomes the question what does it mean to believe in him?
Upon believing all who call on the name of Christ are saved.
I do believe the gospel, and that Jesus died for my sins and rose on the third day to live forever more. He purchased my freedom with his blood and I am no longer under the curse of the law. I used to cry at the thought of His sacrifice. I still sinned. I still enslaved myself chasing after what my flesh desires. Christ should be the king of my heart, but I pet other things become the dominant thing in my life. My Lord has been so good to me and because I have lived wrong many spoke evil of me and failed to see the work Jesus does and did on my heart. This is a call to focus on the word and put it in practice. I don't know what God will do next in my life, and I don't know whether I will face sunshine or rain tomorrow. This I do know. God will be here for me and he loves me with an unwavering love that cannot be shaken.
I posted a few things that the Spirit reminded me of. Times when I tried to love, and failed because I lost sight of what I truly wanted. Also, there were issues with me trying to say I was committing for life while not doing the things I needed to in order to reach that pinnacle.
I'm thankful that the Lord has brought me through those times and gives me hope of new love. It's something that's been on my mind often. Part of why is my struggles with lust. I haven't found a wife and I have asked God plenty. But I confess on this day that Jesus will find me a woman I can truly be in love with and help me to treat her right. I've seen him do so much good in even the tinies parts of my life. So thankful. God's spirit lives inside me as well as all believers and that same spirit rose Christ from the dead. My doubt often leads to sin, although I can't say that's what's caused me to make mistakes. No, I've even chosen those same wrongs when I had the hope of an amazing life partner.
I hear God audibly speak. I've heard it called that still small voice for example. Even now as I type he is talking to me while I let My hero academia playing in the background. I've thought I was mentally ill plenty of times because of my blantant refusal accept the truth I knew in my heart. That it is God with me. Jesus and His spirit walking with me. I think part of why is my fear. Perfect love casts out fear, and I had a hard time accepting that I'm truly free to do anything.
Now that I am accepting it I realize that there was so much good I could've done, and so much pain I could've avoided had I just trusted. I can't blame anyone else for what I decided to do, even though my friends were not spirit led and had no care for god's law. Yes a few were Muslim but that doesn't mean they obeyed their prophet.
I still vape. It's something I intend to quit one day but haven't committed to it yet. Lord forgive me for my selfish habit. I cling to for some pretty dark reasons. Weed made me feel as if I could conceal the parts of me others find undesirable. I feel as if it also makes me fit in the world better. I might be right but that's not a good thing.
I've wanted to reconnect with old friends but feared that it would turn into suffering and drama. Also I worry about my intentions. I feel as if had I started to talk to an ex I would've tried to rekindle those flames and that may not be the right choice.
I don't want to be asked why with me because the reason is a little sad. I have no one and they're attractive. Besides I don't have an easy time meeting new women so going back to the past seems easier than building something fresh. They may not actually think that I feel deeply for them. I'm not sure that I do either, but the attraction is there.
My addiction has stood in the way, and I was pretty easy to get in bed. I lived very much like today is my last day and I have to get all the pleasure I can. It worked against me time and time again. This led to people unintentionally killing my faith in salvation. Maybe sometimes it wasn't unintentionally. I really thought that sex could keep someone around for so much of my life.
I pray that the Lord helps me with whatever issues he sees in my thinking and actions talked about in this post. I love you Jesus and I can't wait til I can see you. But I shouldn't forget you are right here with me. And thank you for all you do for me.

The night of the House Blossom Ball had arrived. Jimmy had to admit, getting Lizzie’s help with an outfit was a good idea. He wore a black suit with intricate, swirling bronze details that shimmered when the light hit them. He had a dark green bowtie as a nod to his empire, and he had indeed ditched the cod head. Instead, he wore a bronze colored masquerade mask that looked like two cod fish curling around his eyes, their fins spreading out and covering his forehead. It felt weird to have his hair exposed, but Lizzie helped him make sure it was presentable. Speaking of Lizzie, she was wearing a dress with the typical navy blue color of the Ocean Empire, but it had an ombre shift into the magenta of Mezalea at the end of the skirt. Joel wore his typical Mezalean garb, but with a navy blue sash instead of a green one. They walked into the ballroom as quite the dazzling trio- and then Jimmy’s heart just about stopped at the sight of Scott.
He was chatting with Pixl and one of the new rulers, a man with colorful wings like a parrot’s. But Jimmy was too busy staring at Scott to really pay attention to Pix and the other ruler, because Scott was wearing a ballgown. The main body of it was long sleeved and form fitting, made of white lace with shimmers of gold worked in, and was backless to allow room for his wings. Then there was a light blue overskirt to go with it, making the dress look like a full ballgown. Gold jewelry adorned him as well- on his wrists, around his neck, and hanging from his ears.
“Close your mouth, Jimmy,” Joel murmured with a teasing lilt. Jimmy snapped his mouth shut, looking down at the ground and extremely relieved that his masquerade mask covered the blush on his cheeks.
“How about we go and mingle with the other guests, I think Jimmy needs a minute to compose himself,” Lizzie teased. Jimmy nodded, too flustered to even protest. The three of them walked over to Katherine, who was chatting with Gem, Pearl, and a gnome girl in a dress that reminded Jimmy of a mushroom, with its red poofy top and white floor length skirt. The girl jumped a bit at the sight of Jimmy and Lizzie, but quickly composed herself.
“Hello! I am Shrub of the Undergrove. You may call me Shelby if you like though,” she said, seeming a little skittish as she spoke. Lizzie smiled gently, giving a curtsy. Joel and Jimmy quickly followed her lead, bowing at Shelby.
“Ocean’s blessings. I am Queen Lizzie, of the Ocean Empire. This is my husband, King Joel of Mezalea. And this is my dear friend, the Codfather of the Cod Empire,” Lizzie said, gesturing to each of them in turn.
“You can call me Jimmy though, if you want,” he added with a smile. Shelby jumped a bit when he spoke, but nodded and gave a hasty curtsy. Joel looked at her with gentle concern.
“Is everything alright?” he asked. Shelby nodded, a bit too hastily.
“Yes! Just not uh. Not super used to this many people,” she said with a nervous laugh, eyeing Lizzie and Jimmy warily. Joel frowned a bit at the way she was looking at them, but didn’t say anything.
“Jimmy, you aren’t making an enemy of our new friend already, are you?” Fwhip’s voice asked from somewhere behind them. Jimmy whirled around to glare at Fwhip, and of course Sausage was at his side.
“I’m just saying hello, Fwhip. Surely that’s allowed,” Jimmy huffed.
“Sure, that’s how it always starts though- next thing you know he’s stealing your things,” Sausage chimed in. Shelby looked rather alarmed, and Jimmy let out a frustrated sigh.
“For the millionth time, you had said that I could-”
“Oh listen, the music’s starting! Let’s dance!” Katherine interrupted him, and the whole ballroom seemed to let out a collective sigh of relief as people found their dance partners. Jimmy fully intended to step to the side and watch as the others danced, but then he met the mischievous glint in Lizzie’s eyes.
“Joel, is it alright if I go dance with Scott? I simply must compliment his dress,” Lizzie said airily. Joel smiled, just as wickedly as the glint in his wife’s eyes.
“As long as you don’t mind if I dance with the Codfather for a bit,” Joel replied.
“Of course!” Lizzie chirped, before heading off towards Scott. Jimmy squinted at Joel suspiciously as he led him to the dance floor. It wasn’t the first time the two of them had danced together, Joel had insisted that Jimmy practice with him before his wedding day. But it had frankly been a while, and he didn’t like the look he and Lizzie had exchanged before she went to dance with Scott.
“What are you up to?” Jimmy asked as he rested his hand on the small of Joel’s back, and Joel rested his hand on Jimmy’s shoulder. Their other hands were clasped together, and the two of them began gently swaying.
“Oh, nothing,” Joel replied, and that was all Jimmy could get out of him as they danced. They slowly made their way across the ballroom floor, and soon they were close to where Lizzie and Scott were dancing. And gosh were they a sight, all swirling skirts and elegance. Jimmy could tell Joel was just as distracted by Lizzie as Jimmy was by Scott. Then Lizzie noticed them staring, and she and Scott twirled closer.
“Jimmy! Let’s trade partners, I’d like to dance with my husband now!” Lizzie chimed, and before Jimmy could process what exactly that meant, he was spun into Scott’s arms. They were almost as close as they had been the day they fought- and there were those butterflies again. He didn’t know what to do with his hands- there was the issue of Scott’s wings and the fact that his dress exposed a lot of the skin on his back. But there wouldn’t be a point to worrying about that, Scott would surely push him away- but then Scott chuckled and took Jimmy’s hands in his, guiding them to where they should be.
“Here,” he said softly, placing one of Jimmy’s hands on his shoulder while his fingers laced with the other, then moved his free hand to rest on Jimmy’s back and pull him impossibly closer. Jimmy swallowed nervously, glancing over at Lizzie and Joel (who nodded encouragingly) before looking back to Scott.
“You look gorgeous,” Jimmy blurted as the two of them began to sway. Jimmy internally cursed himself for saying the first thing that popped into his head- but then Scott’s face flushed and it suddenly all felt worth it.
“Thank you. You clean up pretty well yourself,” he teased. Jimmy laughed.
“Lizzie helped,” he admitted. Scott laughed as well, the sound all sunshine and glittering gold.
“Should’ve known,” he replied, seeming distracted for a moment. Jimmy wanted to ask what was wrong, but Scott plastered on a smile and gently spun the two of them. Jimmy couldn’t help but smile along, heart soaring.
They continued dancing until the song ended, and then Scott was just… gone. He had twirled Jimmy and when he had finally managed to stop spinning and catch his balance, laughing and about to make a teasing remark about Scott making him dizzy- he realized he had vanished into the crowd. It felt like Scott had taken a bit of Jimmy’s heart with him. Jimmy looked around for him, and met Katherine’s concerned gaze instead. She gave a comforting smile as she walked over to Jimmy.
“I saw Scott go upstairs, I think he just needed some fresh air after dancing. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind some company,” she said with a wink, nudging Jimmy towards the stairs. He chuckled, thanking Katherine before heading up the stairs. She was right, there was no need to be worried! Jimmy just kinda wished Scott would have said something.
Jimmy’s breath was once again taken away when he saw Scott standing on the balcony. If Jimmy thought he was beautiful in the sunlight, he was even more stunning in the moonlight. The white of his wings practically glowed, and while the gold didn’t shimmer quite as bright as it did in the sun, it still sent Jimmy’s heart fluttering all the same. The only thing that ruined the image was how… distressed Scott looked. His hands were fiddling with the gold bracelets he wore, and his mouth was fixed in a frown. Maybe he needed some space, clearly something about the dance upset him- he probably hadn’t really wanted to dance with Jimmy, and just played along cause everyone was watching. Jimmy should definitely apologize before giving him some space.
“Scott? I promise I’ll leave you alone after this, but I just wanted to apologize,” Jimmy said, trying not to let his heartbreak show. Scott jumped in surprise, turning to look at Jimmy.
“Apologize? For what?” he asked, seeming genuinely confused.
“The dance. Joel and Lizzie schemed against my will, I just wanted to say I’m sorry,” Jimmy explained, guilt welling up in his stomach. To his surprise, Scott gave a soft laugh.
“You don’t need to apologize for that. I… I liked dancing with you,” he confessed. Jimmy’s heart was sent fluttering once more, and he stepped closer to Scott with a grin.
“Oh! Good, I was just worried because you left and you looked upset when I came up here,” Jimmy said, deflating only a little bit when Scott only smiled and nodded in response before gazing out over the lands of the Overgrown. There was awkward silence for a moment or two, until Scott suddenly moved closer to Jimmy, almost as close as they had been when they were dancing. Butterflies sparked in Jimmy’s stomach at the little distance between them.
“I need to tell you something,” Scott blurted. He looked nervous, almost like he had been when Jimmy first had come up to the balcony.
“Of course, what is it?” Jimmy asked soothingly. Scott looked him in the eyes, mouth opening and closing uselessly- until he broke eye contact for a brief moment before locking eyes with him again, something desperate in his gaze. Then suddenly Scott’s hands were gently cradling his face and there were lips on his. Scott’s lips. Scott was kissing him. Jimmy gasped in surprise against his mouth before quickly sinking into the kiss and running his hands through Scott’s stupid perfect hair. Scott’s hands drifted down from his face to his waist, pulling him in closer as his wings wrapped around them both, shielding them from the outside world so it was only Scott and Jimmy. Then Scott tilted his head and the kiss went from pleasantly warm to blazing, sending sparks racing up Jimmy’s spine. It left him dizzyingly breathless, like Scott had spun him a thousand times on the dance floor, and Jimmy never wanted it to end-
And then a thundering BOOM rattled the castle, breaking them apart. Scott clung to Jimmy, arms tightening around his waist as his breath hitched in fear, and Jimmy held him back just as tightly. There was something unreadable in Scott’s expression alongside the fear, but Jimmy didn’t have time to decipher it before another BOOM shook the castle. Jimmy was about to ask what was going on, but the sound of someone landing on the roof behind him and the voice that went with it stopped him cold.
“Well what do we have here?” Fwhip crooned, and Scott practically snarled as he shifted his hold on Jimmy so that one arm was curled protectively around his waist, his wing shielding him as well, as he drew a sword from somewhere within his skirts and pointed it at Fwhip. Dimly, Jimmy remembered that there weren’t supposed to be weapons at the ball, Katherine had made a rule.
“Leave before I make you,” Scott growled, the sound of his voice sending liquid fire through Jimmy’s veins. Fwhip gave an incredulous scoff, shaking his head.
“Playing the part a little too well, are we?” he sneered, and just like that the fire in his veins went cold, and he realized what that strange look on Scott’s face had been before. Guilt. Scott’s grip on him suddenly felt suffocating, more like he was holding Jimmy hostage rather than protecting him.
“Let go of me,” Jimmy demanded, voice hollow. Scott’s grip only tightened on him, and Jimmy’s heart rate spiked in fear.
“Don’t listen to Fwhip, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” Scott said shakily. Fwhip let out a cruel laugh.
“Oh come on Scott, you’re the one who helped make this possible,” he jeered, and the castle shook with another explosion. Jimmy’s stomach dropped. Scott was in league with Fwhip. Scott had plotted against him, and lulled Jimmy into a false sense of security with dazzling smiles and soft lips.
“Jimmy-” Scott started, but was cut off by the sound of people bounding up the stairs and shouting. Jimmy’s head whipped over to see Katherine, Lizzie, and Joel coming up to the balcony.
“Fwhip! How could you do this!” Katherine demanded, tears streaming down her face. Fwhip merely laughed.
“I told you the ball would be a blast, Katherine,” he sneered. Anger boiled in Jimmy’s stomach at Fwhip’s tone towards Katherine, and he squirmed against Scott’s hold.
“Jimmy,” Scott warned, voice low. Joel mistook the tone of Scott’s voice, and leveled his sword at him- somehow Jimmy missed that he was holding it, he must have grabbed it from the chests at the front of the castle.
“Release the Codfather. Now. I won’t let you destroy this castle and take an ally hostage,” Joel growled.
“Joel, stay out of this. You don’t understand what’s happening,” Scott said, voice calm and even. Joel let out a harsh laugh, tightening his grip on his sword.
“I understand plenty,” he snarled, leaping at Scott. Scott was forced to toss Jimmy to the side to block the incoming strike, and Jimmy watched them fight with some sort of dazed confusion as he fell to the ground. Everything felt cold and hollow, and Jimmy didn’t really feel connected to his body as Lizzie scrambled to his side, helping him up and murmuring words of comfort.
“C’mon Jimmy, we’ve gotta get out of here,” she said, voice soft but no less urgent as she gently squeezed Jimmy’s hand. He met Scott’s eyes briefly as he was holding off Joel, and that was decision enough for Jimmy. He squeezed Lizzie’s hand back, and ran with her.

throw me to the wolves (and i’ll return leading the pack)
Characters: rebellion leader!Juyeon & thief!you
Genre: action, kind of enemies to lovers, historical (set in early 1900s like in Mr. Sunshine)
Warnings: some suggestive themes but nothing explicit, violence, minor character deaths
Summary: As the king’s thief, you had been assigned to get back the stolen map of the palace. It’s easy as pie but you would have never expected such consequences of your actions and you certainly did not expect Lee Juyeon in your life.
Words: 8.3k
Author’s note: title is a Seneca quote as far as I know (and I swear it will make sense), also the concept is very much inspired by TBZ’s Road to Kingdom Reveal and Danger stages.
Tumblr media
Lee Juyeon might not have been of royal blood but he had definitely been born to rule.
The first time you met him, he pressed the blade of a knife against your neck, pinning you to a dirty wall in the outskirts of Hanseong.
"Not the nicest way to say hi to a lady," you remarked casually as if neither the closeness of his firm, strong body nor the sharp object grazing your skin didn't affect you.  He was a lot stronger than you, you knew that, it would have been useless to go against him with brute force, so you had to be smart about it.
"You are very far from a lady," he sneered at you, dark messy hair falling into his fierce eyes.
Meeting his gaze, your heartbeat stopped for a moment in fear before blood rushing to your face tinted your pale cheeks in the colours of rosy sunrises. His eyes were murderous and he held his weapon steadily, so you were sure he wouldn't have hesitated to slice your throat if things didn't go his way. He was a dangerous man, you knew that already. With a reputation like his, you expected nothing less.
Although he might have had the reflexes and the wits, he might have been able to find you but you weren't going to just let him win so easily.
"Oh, am I?" you tilted your head nonchalantly yet careful not to hurt yourself because of your own hastiness. Then you elegantly lifted your right leg to link it behind his thigh almost as if you wanted to pull him closer. As expected, he faltered momentarily, blinking surprised at your bold and suggestive move, but that was all you needed to pull out your own dagger from its case on your leg and point it at his abdomen with a triumphant smile playing on your carmine lips. Oh men and their confidence, they always overlooked the skills of women.
Juyeon gritted his teeth, pressing his lips together firmly and as he was looking at you through narrowed eyes and you swore you could almost see the cogs in his head turning.
"Not that I don't enjoy this but what about we continue this discussion in a more civilized manner?" you croaked a brow at him challengingly to which the guy just let out a ridiculing snort.
"Well, you could have thought of that when you robbed me," he remarked almost as if he was waiting for you to deny it. But you just shrugged, unbothered.
"Stealing from a thief can hardly count as a theft."
"But it doesn't change the fact that I want my possession back," the young man retorted and you cracked a smile at that. That wasn't unexpected, of course, he wanted it. A lot of people desired the same thing in those chaotic times.
"Well, I don't have it with me but if you are willing to pay me more than my current client I might consider giving it back. I won't risk my life for nothing. Not even for that handsome face of yours," you teased pressing his buttons on purpose, testing him but the guy let out another snort, this time with a roll of his eyes. He clearly didn't appreciate you joking around but you were dead serious about your offer. In this kind of business you were dealing in, betraying a client had a high price.
"What about you giving it back nicely and I will forget about this little incident?" he offered you a chance to come clean and there was a dangerous edge in his voice, a 'because if you don't...' kind of threat. Oh, so he was the revengeful kind. It didn't really surprise you but he also wasn't the first man promising to ruin your life. But also because of that, his words could not scare you.
"What about I start screaming and men will come and save me from a pervert who pushed me against the wall?" you asked and from the flinch of his mouth you knew you had won this time. Because Hanseong might not have been the most righteous place of all, men still liked to play the hero if a pretty girl called for help. Juyeon must have known this as well, so his silence made you smile. "What about we play by my rules? Be at the Eastern altar of the Buddhist temple by the time the bell rings last at midnight and we might make a deal if you bring enough cash."
“Aren't you afraid that I will just take it?” he pondered the thought but he should have known better.
“Aren't you arrogant to think I would let you have it so easily? So what will it be? Should I scream?” you provoked him on purpose and did not like his smirk one bit. But at least he pulled away, lowering his knife, slipping it back to its place while his gaze wandered down to your rolled up skirt and the dagger you held in your hand.
“There are better ways to make you scream,” he said hoarsely and you couldn't decide whether it was supposed to be a threat or he was just being cocky. But before you could have questioned his motives, he swiftly climbed over a wall, disappearing into the shadows.
Lee Juyeon was fuming. He hated to lose and for some reason, meeting you felt like a slap. He didn't like that you had something over him, something that he really needed, so he had no choice but to cooperate, something he really hated to do with people he didn't trust and he certainly loathed your fleeting loyalty. Your kind, who didn't believe in anything, always chose the side which seemed more favourable, was the worst in his eyes because you two might have been criminals just the same but at least he did it all for a reason, a greater cause.
"Did you get it back?" Changmin greeted him excitedly as soon as he stepped into their hideout but Juyeon didn't spare him a glance, he went straight to their safe.
"She didn't have it with her," he murmured grumpily and mindlessly but the other boy was quick to catch on that tiny detail.
"Wait... she? It was a girl that almost broke Chanhee's nose?" he gasped to which the guy he just mentioned threatened to throw the closest object at him which happened to be a stolen jewellery box.
"Thank you for the reminder," he spoke up ironically sweetly.
Juyeon just shot them a disapproving look.
"Yes, it was a very annoying girl," he said, blood still boiling because of the fact that this unknown girl managed to break into their hideout and steal the map of the palace. They worked too hard to get it just to get it taken away by a pitiful thief.
"We will get it back, don't worry, but we can't make it too easy for her because then she might get greedy. Get some of the boys. We are going to pray tonight," Juyeon said as he fixed his sword on his side.
Changmin and Chanhee exchanged a knowing look but neither of them objected. They knew better because if Juyeon was good at something other than having a tongue as sharp as his blade, that was planning. He just didn't like when things got out of hand.
The temple was eerily quiet moments before midnight. When the bell of curfew woke up all the birds that flew away, Juyeon stepped out of the darkness as well, making his way slowly towards the altar but just as he stepped inside the temple, a familiar voice echoed all around.
“Aren’t you curious why I chose this place?” came the rhetorical question from somewhere in the shadows. “Because the acoustic is so perfect that every little step can be heard clearly. So you better leave your boys out and come in alone.”
Juyeon gritted his teeth and signalled to the others to wait outside. He hated that he was outsmarted by you. Not because you were a girl, he prided himself in the fact that he didn't care about that. He didn't like anyone crossing his plans and you were doing that as if you had the time of your life waltzing through his chess board.
He took careful, calculated steps inside the temple. He halted for a moment when he saw you sitting cross legged in front of a golden statue of a deity. He himself had never been religious, no god had given him a reason to believe, so he believed in what he could see and experience: himself and his group.
"Let's cut to the chase. I brought the money," he said, throwing the bag of coins between the two of you.
You hummed, acknowledging the heavy weight of the bag. But if you wanted to be honest, you didn't really care about money. Sure, it was a good safety net in case your previous clients turned against you but money couldn't save your life, you could have done nothing with it dead.
"Why do you need the map of the Palace?" you roll the sheet of paper in front of you, so both of you would see it: the pretty architectural plan of the most important building complex of the empire.
"Isn't it obvious?" Juyeon croaks a brow at that, glancing down on the paper and the candles nearby, wondering whether you would threaten him to set it ablaze if he wasn't cooperative. If you were arrogant enough to think you could be faster than him.
"Hm, no. I can think of multiple purposes," you told him lulling the options in your head. “But you don't have a good thief. If you had instead of trying to negotiate with me they would steal it back, so I guess you don't wish to rob the treasury. Then again you would have much easier ways to get inside if you would like to free a prisoner, so that leaves me with one option: you want to kill the king. Or someone as important as him."
Him, that puppet king so hungry for power that he didn’t even notice how his advisers controlled him.
The corner of Juyeon's mouth twitches. No matter how much he tried to act nonchalant he was annoyed how well you figured him out. His silence was enough of an answer for you nevertheless. So with a content smile on your carmine lips, you tilted your head in interest, gaze fixed on his sharp lines even in the dim lit temple.
"You know, rumours say that you are the bastard son of the late king," you told him paying close attention to his reactions but Juyeon stayed unfazed.
"And you think I will tell you if it's right or not?" he let out a mocking laughter but you weren't one to take it to heart.
"It was worth a shot." you just shrugged, then looked down on the map he so desperately wanted. "I will let you have it for free. On one condition."
"Then it's not free," he corrected you but the way his mouth tilted with annoyance but eyebrows raised in curiosity, he couldn't have been that bothered.
"I want in," you told him, clear and honest, confident. "If you really want to kill the king, I want to join."
For the first time that night the guy seemed really surprised and he didn't hide it. He looked at you as if you thought killing was a children's game.
"That's rebellion, you know, right?"
"We're both criminals, you know, right?" you retorted and he stared into your eyes, cold fire burning in his dark orbs. Moments passed like this, in grave silence and then...
"Accept her freaking condition. We do need a good thief," someone yelled from outside and you let out a chuckle. At least someone was smart on that team, you liked him already. Unlike the infamous Lee Juyeon.
"If you ever just think about betraying us, I'll kill you myself," he gritted his teeth but you merely smiled at him. You had no plans on betraying them as long as they got rid of the puppet king. And your unpaid debt.
"Understood," you stood up, pushing the map to his chest and grinned at him. "Instead of sulking, introduce me to your boys."
The notorious group was unlike any other than you had met before. They seemed more like friends and family than allies from the way they acted around each other. Of course, you weren't taken to the headquarters right away. You were taken to some inn where a guy named Changmin who seemed the most open to your arrival checked whether the map was real. They also stood guard one by one during the night as if you wanted to kill them. Gosh, it was four against one and Mr. Almighty thought girls weren't a match for him.
You immediately hit it off with Changmin over the fact that you had punched someone called Chanhee in the face while stealing the asset from them the last time. Sangyeon was kind but careful from the beginning. But Sunwoo and Juyeon seemed more wary of you but after you gave the last chicken wing of yours to the younger, he softened, so only their leader was hard to crack. You didn't exactly blame him, he just tried to keep the others safe even if he did it in an annoying way.
"Let's get one thing right: I don't trust you. Your kind, only working for money as if that was your god, not believing in something, that's the worst," he told you one evening, right before you were about to meet the entire team.
"I don't have the luxury to believe in anything else than myself. Never had," you looked him straight in the eyes, no tremble in your voice and then, for the first time since you knew him, Juyeon's eyes had a kind of understanding in them as if he knew what you were talking about.
The next day you were heading towards a temporary base and while the guys warned you about possible checks and guards on the road, neither of you expected any connotation. You travelled on horse backs with a farm-wagon like some nomads trying not to draw attention but each of you were known and wanted criminals, so it was almost inevitable to get on someone's bad side.
"Where exactly are we going?" you complained when you noticed that you took a turn that led backwards from where you departed.
"To the base, like we said, we just don't want unwelcomed guests there," Juyeon gritted his teeth, tilting his head towards the mountains. You didn't see anything special in them but he must have been aware of how ambushes around there worked because it didn't take long for the men to show their faces… or well, their intent. The first arrow pierced into the ground only a few steps away from Sunwoo's horse's feet, scaring the animals and alarming all of you. You looked around, drawing your daggers from your belt but you didn't see anyone in particular. The attack must have come from the mountains, from behind the rocks and the first one was soon followed by another again and again arrows raining down on you like a summer downpour.
"Into the woods! Right now!" Juyeon yelled and everybody followed his order without questions asked, leading the horses among the trees, into hiding. You tried to keep up and follow the guys but it seemed like you had lost their sight while watching behind your back too, checking on the approaching attackers. Eventually you decided to let your horse go, far into the woods, away from the danger on its own as you tried to hide from the men. You were like a shadow thief after all, you were good at disappearing into thin air but not if you had an animal three-four times your size with you. You hid behind a rock covered in green leaves, wondering whether you should have climbed the bamboo trees instead when you heard the steps nearing. You suck in your breath, holding it in to not make any noise while mentally cursing Lee Juyeon and his gang for setting you up. The king must have offered a nice sum of money for proving you unfaithful. Why else would they have left you behind?
Just as you thought you were by yourself, a hand clamped over your mouth, pulling your body close to his.
"Keep quiet and follow me," Juyeon, that impossible guy, muttered before slowly taking his hands off you and yanking you towards the growing bushes in the middle of the bamboo forest. There, between two ordinary looking branches he crouched down and climbed into some kind of hole that was unnoticeable from afar. You followed him, knees and hands dirty by the time you got to some kind of cave where you could stand up finally and you blinked, trying to adjust to the dark.
"Welcome to the base," you heard Changmin's cheerful voice and he lit a lamp, filling the cave with light where everybody was safe and sound. Seeing that and how Sangyeon was in the middle of treating an arrow scratch on Sunwoo's arm, you let out the breath you had been holding this whole time. Back there, you really thought for a moment that they betrayed you already and while lack of trust saved you quite a few times, this time you weren't proud of doubting them already.  Not that they had any sentimental reason to get you to safety, they needed you for their mission, only that, you knew that and refused to believe otherwise.
However, the confession that fell from your lips that evening while passing the pot of jjigae around was more out of a sense of fairness than guilt.
"You told me you hate the kind that works only for the money, right?" you met Juyeon's sharp, dark, ever so telling eyes by the campfire, keeping your voice low enough, so only the two of you would hear it.
"I don't really have much choice. I work for the king to pay off my family's debt. It's this or prison and if I can make some side money like that, why not?" you shrugged, not looking at him. You weren't curious about his reaction or opinion, you told yourself. You didn't tell him to pity you.
A few long moments of silence passed while you pretended to cool the food down while stirring until Juyeon spoke up.
"Then why are you betraying him?"
"Isn't it obvious? A debt to the king has no limit, I would have to work for him until the day I die, he would never be satisfied with less. I want my freedom back," you told him, honestly, which was received only by a hum but you were glad that he didn't drag the topic out, he didn't ask about the reason behind the debt.
After that day, you were more involved in the planning phrase of the upcoming missions and eventually you met the whole team. You went out to steal this and that with Chanhee, playfully commenting on how pretty his nose was and grew totally fond of Haknyeon who made the best noodle soup you ever ate. The more missions you had been a part of, the more time you spent with them and away from the castle, the less chance you had to go back and beg for mercy if things went wrong. That was your original plan: give it a chance and retreat if it didn't work out but you had to realise that these people didn't have A and B plans, this was their one and only fight and they believed in it. It made you want it to succeed even more.
"We don't do this to rule," Changmin told you one day, after practicing sword fighting. "Nobody here, not even Juyeon desires the throne. We do this for the oppressed people, for those who suffer the most under this unfair regime."
It sounded too noble to be real but you believed him. Even more so when you heard that their takeover plan considered the loss of people and that they wished to get over with it with the least victims possible. That was why they needed the plan too: to know the best path to the throne room and the king's and his advisers' rooms without getting in the way of many guards. You also needed to know where and when the soldiers did their regular checks in the palace, so your plan's next phase was to observe the place. Chanhee has some connections and you could have your hideout in a courtesan house close to the royal quarters.
"Change," Juyeon said as he put a pile of pastel green dress in front of you. You looked down with clear disgust on your face before looking back up at a disgust.
"Are you for real?"
"You can't walk into a courtesan house dressed like that. You are a girl," Juyeon's voice was authoritative and a bit tense, you scoffed.
"Wow, now you're saying that," you rolled your eyes at him, still grimacing even when you were told that it was expensive to get said dress. In the end, you had to admit, it was the plan possible way to get in, so you picked the clothes up with a sigh and walked into a further alcove to get changed before your departure. It had been a long time since you wore skirts, those weren't too practical for climbing or fighting, so you preferred pants and anything that made it easy to move quickly and comfortably. So it felt strange to wear something like this again, not to mention it was probably silk based on how soft it was against your skin and you probably had never worn something as expensive as that. You ever let your hair down from the usual ponytail that made sure it didn't get in the way, so you looked every bit of a decent lady when you stepped out.
"Wow," Youngjae gave voice to his awe the moment he saw you and Sunwoo had to nudge him in the side to close his mouth.
The boys were either shy about it or similarly amazed, only Juyeon didn't really react. He barely glanced your way before telling everyone to hurry up. You rolled your eyes at his obvious behaviour and stuck to Changmin’s side on the way to the courtesan house. It would have been too conspicuous if everybody went together, so you formed smaller groups.
The plan was to get everyone to the new base before midnight and observe the palace for the next few days in turns. To make it even more believable, in public you had to act as if you were one of the girls working in the courtesan house, that made it less suspicious for the guys to visit you either and you didn’t care about your reputation much anyways. Not that a lot knew you, the faceless shadow thief, anyways. During the next days you gathered enough information to know when it would have been the best to attack but there must have been a whistleblower around because soldiers raided the courtesan house one of the evenings.
“They closed off every exit and entrance, we cannot get out without being caught,” Sangyeon said while Hyungseo looked out the window, confirming that there were soldiers outside as well.
“Chanhee says they are checking every room where there’s no business going on,” Changmin closed the door behind him. You were on the top floor, so you had advantage in time while the soldiers were busy checking beneath.
“Business?” Youngjae furrowed his brows, confused and got a smack in the head from Sunwoo.
“You know,” he emphasized making hand gestures that almost made you laugh despite the tense situation.
“Then hide and let’s make it look like there’s something here they don’t have the right to see,” you said pulling the fancy hairpin out, letting your locks fall onto your shoulders as you threw your red robe onto the ground, leaving a bit of a mess.
“Oh my gosh,” Youngjae shrieked, scandalized and turned his back on you, deciding to hide inside the closet followed by Sunwoo while others moved behind the curtains.
“Come on, I can’t put on a show alone. That would be even more suspicious than having a tea party here,” you complained, heartbeat drumming in your ears as you heard the approaching steps echo from the stairs outside. You climbed on top of the bed that faced the door and raised a brow at the two guys staring at you as if they didn’t believe you were alright with what you had just proposed.
“Showtime, boss,” Hyunjae decided and literally dragged Juyeon’s jacket off him before drawing his sword out, he stood behind the door in case the soldiers would have come inside anyways. That left only the team’s leader, the guy who had once said you weren’t much of a lady, in front of you, looking like he had some internal conflict.
Ridiculous. It was just a fake act, even if he was terrible at pretending, he could have made an effort. You weren’t a bad face to look at, so he really could have at least not suffered so visibly about having to get close with you. Maybe you just imagined him cursing under his breath, maybe he really was that frustrated but at least you didn’t have to force him to get on the damn bed and unbutton his shirt a bit himself. Great.
“Could you not act as if it physically hurt you to touch m–” you muttered under your breath, annoyed but Juyeon cut you off with a simple movement. He climbed over you, hovering over your body and slid a hand onto your neck, angling your head just right for a kiss that never came. Your lips parted in surprise but his only grazed against it slightly, your breaths mingling in the air while his piercing gaze shot right through you. It felt burning, the way he looked at you with those feline eyes from so close. You could practically feel the heat of his body, his skin scorching against yours – or was it you? – and your heart picked up its speed once again. The wait was nerve-wracking because you felt the tension stiffen in the air while you listened to the thuds of doors opening and closing, soldiers shouting.
When the door your room opened, revealing three men in black behind it, you pretended to be shocked and automatically reached to rearrange your clothes while Juyeon turned his head lazily towards the intruders.
“Who are you to disturb me? Did I not pay enough?” he yelled at the soldiers who exchanged knowing looks, but after looking around for suspicious signs, they indeed retreated.
You let out a breath when the door finally closed again and tried and failed not to roll your eyes at how fast Juyeon pulled away. Hyungseo cleared his throat and said something about seeing the two of you slightly undressed in a bed scarring him for life and one by one all the guys came out of their hiding place, only making comments about the recent events behind your backs.
After the visit of the soldiers, the tense atmosphere slowly dissolves into something like anticipation and determination to get done with their plan as soon as possible. You already had a good idea about the daily routine within the palace but with how frequently they changed their guards it would have been almost impossible to get through them without drawing too much attention and that was the least you wanted. If the royal guards knew about your arrival, you would have been too outnumbered to actually do anything, much less to get to the king himself. But you had a good card in your favour.
"So I will be taking the map back?"
"Right. If we have at least a bit of luck, the king and his men only know that you came to get that. Let's say you had trouble getting your hands on it..." Sangyeon explained which made you scoff out loud. You didn't mean to look down on them but it was ridiculously easy to get the map. Sure they had stood guard and they kept it locked away but a group of about ten guys was nothing you who had been robbing much more secured places than their bases. The most difficult part was to actually find them, after that it was like a children's play. So it somewhat hurt your pride and reputation as a thief to admit you had to waste days until you got it.
"Sure, we can say that I tried to seduce your boss to get the map here," you shrugged and glanced at said guy and knew that despite your nonchalant behaviour your words provoked him based on the way he clenched his jaw. "That would explain even if one of the guards recognized me. Though I don't see much of a chance for that. Although this much time would have been enough for you to get what you wanted from it, so the king will be displeased."
"Will you meet him in person?" Haknyeon asked since that was crucial information regarding your plan. If you were about to meet the king, then they must be there, too. But no, you only met the king once and the memory sent shivers down your spine. You were dragged in front of him, clothed rugged, dirt and bruises all over you as two guards held you. You weren't proud of how you had been crying but that day, you were sure you were about to die. As a daughter of servants in the royal palace, you had no way of providing a better life for yourself. You weren't only a subject to the king but his slave. When you were born that way, there was no chance of getting out. Born as a girl you couldn't become a guard, a soldier or a scholar. It was a time when the higher you could go was becoming a concubine but you had no intention of lying under the king or a prince.  You would have chosen death over that.
But no, the king must have wanted something since he didn't kill you with your parents when he learned about their betrayal, about how they sold information about him to his brother. No, he took your life and made sure to form you to his will, to make the perfect little thief and spy for him in exchange for letting you live. But he was naive to think that you would be loyal to the murdered of your parents. Because he might not have been the one to draw the sword but he was the one who gave the orders, him and not his stupid advisers who made your country rot and the people suffer.
"Probably not. He usually gives me orders through his right hand man," you said, knowing too well that said man had his temperament to match the king's. They would beat you just enough, so you could steal more for them. Maybe break only your left hand to cause enough pain but not turning you incapable for them. You were an asset, nothing more and you hated it.
"What will happen to you because of your latency?" came the next question and gulping down your own fears, you waved it off, forcing a confident expression onto your face.
"Don't worry about me and break into the king's quarters like you should," you told them, clear as the sky was on summer afternoons you had liked as a child.
The truth was, everybody knew what happened to those who displeased the king. It wouldn't matter that you bring back the desired map. If you were late, it was the same as not going along with the order.
"You should have someone to be there with you," Juyeon spoke up for the first time for a while, his gaze fixated on the map without a fail and it made the corners of your mouth twitch. It almost sounded like he cared.
"Are you worried about me, Lee Juyeon?" you raised a brow at him, cunningly like a tease but when he looked up and your eyes met, the words froze onto the tip of your tongue. There was something sad in his eyes, something you had failed to notice before. As if he understood you more than you would have thought.
"Of course, we are all worried about you!" Changmin said vehemently and you tore your gaze away from the raven haired boy to turn to him with a grateful smile.
"Then, focus on not getting yourself killed first. I can take care of myself," you claimed and kept acting like it through the meeting, deciding on the upcoming Lotus festival celebration's night for the attack. There might have been more guards around then but with more guests in the palace, it would have been easier to blend in. No to mention that the king being drunk could probably help too.
It was a good plan, one you believed in. One that could finally bring you peace and freedom. You didn't want to delude yourself too early, so you tried not to think too much about it. If the mission wasn't successful you would have been killed for sure since what you were about to do was treason and no traitor could live in Hanseong.
It was a two way street then: freedom or death. Free from the king's chains either way. Yet, the night before the Lotus festival, you found it hard to sleep. You were fidgety, even snapped at Changmin when he tried to make a joke about you finally looking like yourself in your regular clothes instead of the courtesan one. You apologized and he understood, everybody was tense after all but it showed differently. Juyeon for example was even more closed off and quieter than usual. You didn't expect to run into him at night, though.
It was eerily quiet in the corridors and you just wanted to get some fresh air, outside of the suffocating atmosphere of your room. Meeting him by the gate, however, wasn't the plan.
"Are you ditching us?" he asked in a hoarse voice, back leaning against the brick wall as soon as you passed by him like wind. His voice was more passive and sad than angry and you remembered how he warned, threatened you to kill you if you decided to betray their trust. Sure, you could have ratted them out, saving yourself but did he really trust you so little?
"I don't know. Should I?" you retorted just for the sake of it because it was ridiculous: his suspicion of you even after all this time. But he didn't answer, so you rolled your eyes. "I just needed some air. Just like you, I assume."
Juyeon seemed to complement over your reply but he must have deemed it good enough because he turned his deadly gaze away. You didn't intend to have a heart-to-heart talk with him but since you might die tomorrow, it was your last chance to ask questions like:
"You already know my reason for treason but what's yours? And don't give me some crap like for a better and fair future," you turned to him but you were careful enough to look around before talking about something like that in public.
However, Juyeon either wanted to avoid answering or simply didn't like the place as he bob his head towards the courtesan house and as his sign, you went back inside, finding solace in your empty room. It had been a long while since you had been alone with him and you remembered what happened here the last time when you were this close… even closer. Now you both sat on the ground, backs to the wall, no touching, no smart retorts, no audience.
"Have you heard the story of the Crown Prince?" Juyeon spoke up but his question made you furrow your brows.
"About Prince Hyunjoon? What story?" you wondered out loud as confused as you were. Prince Hyunjoon had been sent to study in a prestigious academy as it had been advised to the king but it was probably not for his own good, there were rumours going around that he had sent the boy away because he feared he would try to take his throne from him. He had grown to be paranoid.
"No, not him. The first born prince," Juyeon corrected you and that made sense, you couldn’t recall anything else that was interesting regarding the next ruler of the country. You believed that after his father’s death, even if he was inexperienced, he could make a better king. He was said to be kindhearted after all.
"Ah, the prince who died almost 20 years ago?"
Your question had been left hanging for a few long moments and you even turned to face Juyeon, wondering whether he heard up but what he said next made your eyes grow comically wide.
"He didn't die,” he claimed so sure of himself that it left no doubts even though it was already crazy. “But he has always been unworthy of the title of the crown prince."
"What do you mean? And how do you know?" you sprouted questions because in that moment you could do only that, even forgetting how it came up in the first place.
"You see, the crown prince was indeed the son of the queen but just as the king wasn't faithful, she wasn't either. She had her child out of wedlock but raised him as if he was the kind of royal the king desired,” the boy continued quietly, looking down at his hands, playing with a ring on his pinkie finger. “The king figured out and he was furious. He got the queen killed but the boy was rescued by rebels. He was only six at the time but from one day to another, his father who had never been a kind man became his biggest enemy, so he had  grown up seeking revenge.”
You had listened to this story, his story, you were sure, and you couldn’t have been more shocked. You knew that the king was an awfully temperamental man but killing his own wife and a child? And these days he got drunk and had multiple women in his quarters? It made you sick.
“That’s my reason for treason,” Juyeon added slowly, quietly, almost gentle and for the first time you wanted to tell him something reassuring, something so unlike you but it wasn’t your place to pat him on the back and tell him everything would be alright.
“I… I never knew. I have grown up in the palace but I have only heard that the first prince had died and his death broke the queen’s heart, too,” you whispered, suddenly feeling naive but who would have thought?
“Not many people know. He hid it well,” the boy gritted his teeth, then exhaled a few shaky breaths. “But Hyunjoon knows and he’s on our side. He will make a good king.”
You hummed along, agreeing, hoping for better days and that you could live long enough to enjoy those.
"Look, I know you hate me..." you started off, not trying to come off as someone close to him just because he told you this but then, he unexpectedly cut you off. His confident voice caught you off guard so much that it had your eyes widen in surprise.
"I don't," he said and you might have only imagined it but he sounded a bit nervous. He probably wasn’t used to talking about his feelings, even if it was hate. Now, that made two of you. "I did hate you but... I hate everything that I associate with the king and you... I have seen the bag of gold coins paid for killing my mother and me."
Ah. So that was why he hated ‘your kind’ so much. The kind that took dirty money and accomplished any task thrown in their way, even murdering an innocent child. It made sense, the murderous look in his eye, the disgust he had written all over the place whenever he looked at you. He probably associated you with those who had taken his mother away from him.
“I’m just a thief. I never killed anyone, even though some I encountered would have deserved it,” you told him. You didn’t owe him an explanation or anything for that matter but still, you wanted him to hear that from you because you knew how your reputation made you sound.
"I know," Juyeon stated, oddly calm and you were dumbfounded to notice the subtle smile in the corner of his mouth before he turned his head to look at you. Dark orbs finding yours, stirring something inside you. "Your aim is too shitty for you to be a killer."
"Yah!" you gasped, pseudo-offended but then laughed it off and for the first time in a long while, for a moment you felt light and at ease. Who knew Juyeon could make you feel that way too and not just boil your blood in an annoying way.
Looking back, you should have known better. You should have seen that something was off. But your mission was planned so well that you believed the smooth execution was thanks to all those long days who had put into it and all those months and years of preparation that Juyeon and his team had behind their backs in order to even dare such a thing.
Getting into the palace during the Lotus Festival was easy. A lot of people came and went during the parade and the palace was buzzing with life. The king looked like he was having fun as well, maybe a bit too much with how often his glass was refilled with rice wine but his recklessness was only working into your favour. By the time the celebrations became dull enough for the ruler to leave, you left your signal in the throne room, wishing for counsel. It was always like this but you never met the king during these times, you didn’t even mind it. Still, waiting in the half-lit room was quite nerve-wracking while you prayed for the others to be able to make their way to the king’s chambers without any hitch. You knelt before the empty throne, head onto the ground, waiting like a good, loyal subject and you suppressed the shudder running through you when you heard approaching, arrogant steps.
“You’re late,” a voice said and you still kept your head down. But you were ready to draw your dagger any needed moment.
“My deepest apology, Your Majesty. I tried to be as quick as possible,” you mumbled out an excuse knowing well that until the right hand let you know that he wasn’t the king, you had to act as if he was.
“Then you were too slow,” the man grabbed you by the chin, forcing you to look at him and with widened eyes, you saw those ruthless ones that had been haunting your dreams since your parents’ death. There was the king in front of you.
But… the whole team had clearly seen him go to his chambers! Then… who was that? Who played that role in the trap? How far would they have gone? What was waiting for the others on their way to the king’s main bedroom? You had to warn them somehow!
"You really thought you could double-cross me? You thought I wouldn't know that you betray me?" the king clicked his tongue, earning your attention again, injecting fear into your veins. You wanted to turn your head, to pull away, to yell at Changmin to go and let the others know but before you could have done any of that, the king pushed you onto the ground.
"Ah, looking for your friend?" he asked mockingly and with a flick of his wristy he called for his guards, the men who carried the luml body of a familiar face.
"No! Changmin!" you shrieked in panic. He was supposed to keep an eye on you, not getting caught. Now, that it wasn't just you in immediate danger, worries took over your chest almost suffocating you.
"Although I should be grateful since you brought my long lost son back home, so I could finish the job my men couldn't," the king tilted his head as if he was pondering over the thought. Your fingers curled up in a fist, glaring at the man with hatred. He played with all of you like a cat played with mice before eating. He enjoyed your suffering and the mind games he played but you weren't keen on being one of his pawns. Not anymore.
Juyeon was ready to kill the king, even if he had to die and in a way you both just wanted revenge and freedom. You had never been a killer but you were ready to die trying in order to end the rule of a tyrant and to save the guys who had become your comrades and friends over the past few days, weeks and anyone who had the same destiny as you. Nobody deserved to have their life hung by a thread of an ultimate made by one side.
So you decided to make a risky move, a reckless one as you reached for the dagger in your belt, throwing it at the smug man the next time he turned towards you. It was a hasty movement, surprising enough for the guards to rush to the king's side but Juyeon was right: your aim was shitty.
Instead of his chest, the dagger barely grazed the king's upper arm and fell onto the ground with a pathetic thud. The man just laughed as if it was funny and picked up your weapon, turning it against you. You gulped as you backed up until the wall. You heard Changmin yelling at you to run while trying to free himself from the guards but you couldn't move, you just stood there, frozen, and watched as the man lifted his hand to strike down at you with the blade. You flinched when he moved, closing your eyes like a coward and only opened them when you felt the man get wobbly in front of you, falling onto his knees from the dagger getting him from behind. Blood spilled from his mouth as his body shook before giving up the fight and you let out a relieved sigh. Such an unceremonious, simple way for a king to die but he didn't deserve more.
"Are you okay?" Juyeon asked, voice honeyed with care and even his dark eyes softened as he stepped closer to check on you, looking for bruises. The same eyes you noticed behind the king when he approached and you had to try your best not to show surprise and relief.
"Yeah. You got here just in time. How did you know?" you gaped at the guy and the others who fought off the guards in the meantime. If the king's bedroom was a trap, how did they get out?
"That man didn't have a limp. I realized he had been a fake one to begin with," he said simply as if it was natural but you had no idea the king had a limp up until now. You still tended to forget he had lived in the palace, close to the king in his childhood and now you tried to imagine him on a throne. It was easier than ever with you being in the throne room with a dead king but Juyeon had never had the ambitions to govern.
"Well, next time you could be faster," you teased, trying to lighten up the atmosphere and luckily, the team's leader didn't seem to mind. His smug smile was back and you would have rolled your eyes if he hadn't just saved your life.
"Will there be a next time? When you're being cornered by a man?" he raised an eyebrow challengingly, a little suggestively but instead of hitting him on the chest, you raised your chin and played the same game:
"Who knows? I keep getting into these situations since I got to know you," you tsked and there was no lie in there. Juyeon smiled at you, sincerely, his eyes holding a secret only the two of you knew but he was practically pushed aside when Changmin came to make sure you weren't hurt, mumbling something stupid about it being his fault.
Juyeon looked around, proud to see his men fight for the same cause and their efforts paying off. When it was finally time for you to leave and start a new chapter in your life, you looked back on the empty throne and the bloody crown on the floor.
“We don’t need a king sitting high on his throne, it’s the time of dogs and wolves,” Juyeon muttered and outside, the Lotus Festival continued as if nothing happened. Smiling, you joined the celebrations.
So this is what it tasted like: freedom.

Escorted by two Dora Miljae and handcuffed, Helmut Zemo arrived in Wakanda. After all, it was a part of the deal made between Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson: in exchange for the help from Wakanda, they must hand the man responsible for King Tchaka's death to them.
Following him, Sam and Bucky watched their unusual ally walking to his fate. They decided to come with the Wakandian royal guards to keep an eye on Zemo. But also for paying a visit to their Avenger colleague, King T'Challa, aka Black Panther.
The group arrived at the royal palace and met King T'Challa, Queen Mother Ramonda, and Princess Shuri.
The monarch got up from his throne and came to greet his friends:
"Welcome to Wakanda, my dear friends. It's been a long time!"
"Indeed, T'Challa. I would rather pay you a visit in other circumstances, but here we are!" replied Bucky.
"I agree. But, as we promised to your Dora Milaje, we bring Baron Helmut Zemo to you. But I suppose you do not need presentations..." said Sam.
"I don't think so, indeed," replied Queen Ramonda.
As for Shuri, she glared at Zemo with anger. She never forgave him for plotting this explosion that claimed the life of her beloved father.
T'Challa went near the prisoner and faced him with dignity:
"So, we meet again, Zemo."
"The pleasure is reciprocal, Your Majesty." replied the Sokovian with a sly grin.
Shaking his head with displeasure, T'Challa ordered his guards to take their prisoner away.
Once Zemo away, Shuri turned to Bucky and Sam before saying:
"I hope that it would help us to find some peace. It felt so long before you finally catch this man."
She paused before muttering:
"Even if it would not bring my father back."
"I am sorry for your loss..." politely replied Sam.
"However, I have heard from Okoye that he suffered a loss too. Is that right?"
"Indeed, Your Majesty. During the events in Sokovia, when the Avengers fought against Ultron, he lost his wife and his son. Since this tragedy, Zemo held the Avengers responsible for their deaths. And well, you know the story." sighed Bucky.
"Unfortunately, yes. However, the S.H.I.E.L.D visited us two years ago."
"REALLY?"
T'Challa nodded.
"Yes, and Director Fury entrusted us with a special guest. And when I said a special guest, I weigh my words!"
"Who is it?" asked Sam.
"Follow me, and you will see!" explained the king.
Puzzled, the Winter Soldier and the Falcon followed T'Challa through the corridors of the royal palace until they arrived in front of a large door.
The Wakanda ruler knocked at the door, and a servant opened:
"Yes, Your Majesty?"
"Is (Y/N) here?"
"Indeed, King T'Challa. The young (Y/N) is currently reading a book in his private library, sir."
"I would like to see him."
The servant nodded, then opened the door before leading the group to the library. They saw a young boy, sitting on an armchair, who read a novel.
The servant politely announced:
"Young Mister (Y/N), His Majesty King T'Challa would like to discuss with you."
The young boy closed his book and got up to greet his visitors:
"Hello, T'Challa. Good afternoon, Queen Ramonda. Hi, Shuri"
"Good afternoon, my boy. Sorry to interrupt your reading!" gently said the Queen Mother of Wakanda.
The brown-haired boy looked at the newcomers with puzzlement.
"Is there something wrong?"
They all looked at each other before Shuri explained:
"(Y/N), I think you should sit down. We need to talk..."
Meanwhile, in his cell, Helmut Zemo evaluated his situation. Honestly, his condition was not worse as he expected: despite being King T'Chaka's indirect murderer, he was in a comfortable cell.
He closed his eyes as he remembered his last confrontation with Bucky. The Sokovian wondered why Barnes did not shoot him in the face. One bullet in his skull, and he would have been free.
He would have been reunited with them again.
A tear fell on his cheek as he remembered his wife, Inge. He often wondered how such a beautiful and smart woman like her could end up being his wife. Helmut wished they had more time together to tell her how much he loved her.
And she gave him the most beautiful present he could ever dream of: his son (Y/N).
Zemo kept his eyes tightly closed as he reminisced the day he held his child for the first time. He was so scared that he would not be a good father. But, at the same time, he felt a wave of joy and love went through him, as he made himself a promise to always be there for his son.
His little boy was the most precious thing he could ever have in his life. (Y/N) was so lovely, cute, and clever. He always has a smile on his face, like a ray of sun in a grey sky.
His heart hurt as Helmut reminded this dreadful day after the destruction of Sokovia. He looked around the ruins, screaming the names of his beloved ones at the top of his lungs.
Then, he spotted the dead body of his father, who laid on the floor, a large bleeding wound on his forehead. He felt a pang of fear in his chest, and what he feared the most happened.
Zemo discovered his wife and his son under the ruins of a wall. He saw himself falling on his knees, wailing of despair as he held their bodies against him.
It was the beginning of his downward spiral against the Avengers, those who caused all this disaster...
"You're okay?"
Zemo woke up from his thoughts and noticed the presence of Bucky, leaning against the doorframe.
He scoffed:
"I expected worse. But I won't complain."
"Sure, you could have a harsh treatment."
The two men stayed silent until Helmut sighed:
"You should have killed me."
"I beg your pardon?"
Barnes saw a wave of anger and sadness in Zemo's eyes:
"You should have pulled the trigger once and for all."
"I made a deal, and I always keep my promise."
Helmut muttered:
"Sure you are... unlike me."
"What are you talking about?"
Zemo got up and walked to the glass that separated him from his freedom, facing Bucky.
"I promised my son that he would be safe, and I will be with him. I failed to keep it, thanks to your friends!"
"Hey, blame Ultron for it!"
"And who created Ultron?"
Bucky kept his mouth shut as he admitted Zemo was right: if only Stark did not create this homicidal android...
"Oh, whatever! It would not bring them back!"
Bucky turned around and replied while leaving them:
"You know, life always has a surprise in store for us."
Helmut did not know what to think about Barnes's sentence: it was too obscure.
Anyway, he would not get out of here until King T'Challa said so. Leaning on the wall, Zemo closed his eyes and hummed a song he used to sing to (Y/N) when he needed some comfort:
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are gray.
You'll never know, dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
"Dad?"
Helmut snapped his eyes open as he heard this familiar voice calling him. No, it could not be... It is impossible!
He turned his head and saw a young boy who looked at him through the glass. He might be 12 years old, probably.
But for sure, Zemo could recognize him anywhere.
"(Y/N)!" he cried as he rushed near the glass, putting his palms against it.
He could not believe his eyes: his beloved son was here, alive and in good health!
As for (Y/N), he was happy to see his father again. Even if he would prefer to see him free, not in jail, but after what he did out of revenge, the young boy guessed his dad got his righteous punishment.
"Hi, Dad." he gently said as he put his hand where his father put his palm.
Meanwhile, behind a tainted glass, Bucky, Sam, and the royal family of Wakanda watched this moving reunion.
"So, if I understand: when the S.H.I.E.L.D went to Sokovia to certify the damage after the battle against Ultron, they found the Zemo family and realized this boy was barely alive, right?" asked Sam.
"Exactly. Fury took the child with him and gave him the best medical treatment. It took a long time, but he managed to recover. Then, he brought (Y/N) here, as he knew Wakanda would have better medical equipment! At the time, Zemo provoked this disaster in Berlin," explained Shuri.
"And we took care of (Y/N). I could not believe that this sweet boy was the son of the man who killed my husband. But I would not blame him for his father's sins!" added Ramonda.
"We explained to him what his father did and the reason behind his crimes. (Y/N) was saddened but happy to know his father was alive. After all, it is his only family left!"
"Indeed..." muttered Bucky.
At that moment, Helmut and (Y/N) tried to catch up with time.
"I thought I lost you."
"I thought I would never see you again, Dad."
Suddenly, Zemo felt a wage of guilt through his body. How down he went! What his flesh and blood could think of him being in jail?
"I wish you would never see me like this. I can understand that you're ashamed of me..."
"I am not, dad. At least, we are together now."
(Y/N) bit his lip.
"Besides, no matter what happens, I will be waiting for you until you paid for your crimes. Because I trust you, and I love you!"
"I love you too, Mein Kleiner Sonnenschein." (My little sunshine).
Suddenly, the glass between them disappeared. Then, Helmut and (Y/N) heard the voice of Shuri through the speakers:
"What would be a proper father-son reunion without an embrace?"
When he realized what she did, Zemo hugged his son in a fierce embrace, kissing his forehead.
"I promise, son: I will do anything to be the father you deserve."
"You already are."
Finally, Zemo got his sunshine back, and it enlightened his long road to redemption...
Thanks for the reading: I hope you enjoyed!

I am looking forward for your requests!

I1+Nalu Only one bed @thegalilea3 request
The wedding of Laxus and Mirajane Dreyar was a cozy affair attended by only close family and friends. Neither had really wanted a lavish event, so a simple morning ceremony and luncheon in a beautiful garden was perfect. The bride and groom instead funneled the majority of their budget into food, drinks, and overnight lodging for the guests at a small nearby hotel. Lucy Heartfilia was happy to see her friend finally married and settled because Mira deserved it.
Though there was one odd thing about the luncheon— assigned seating. With only 21 people including the bride and groom, it seemed unnecessary. Plus, everyone except Lucy and one other person were a couple anyways. Maybe it was to ensure everyone was accounted for, only Mira knew. As it was, it also meant Lucy was sat next to the only other single... Natsu Dragneel. It was a bit weird, but not a big deal. Natsu was her close friend after all.
The day was perfect in every regard. Clear skies, light breeze with warm sunshine, great food, and jovial company. It was a nice reprieve from Lucy’s job in the city. She missed spending time with her friends, especially Natsu and this provided a perfect couple of days to relax in the countryside. They were best friends, her unrequited high school crush until adulthood sent them onto different paths. University, then careers. The pair stayed in touch as often as possible, but both were busy in their endeavors.
“How has it been at the magazine,” Natsu questioned Lucy. “I see you’ve made it to junior editor.”
“Oh,” she laughed, “yeah, but it’s still a glorified title. I’m really just my bosses assistant.”
“It’s still a big step,” he smiled back.
“What about you?”
“They’re sending me to EMT training next month. So, I’ll be a specialized firefighter.”
“That sounds exciting.”
“I guess,” Natsu shrugged, “I prefer the action.”
Lucy chuckled, eyes crinkling in a smile, “same ‘ole Natsu.”
“Hey you two,” Mirajane waved as she walked over. “How is everything?”
“Hi Mira! Everything is perfect, you did a fantastic job planning it.”
“Aww, thanks Lucy.”
“I was surprised that Laxus finally caved.”
Lucy slapped Natsu’s chest for the comment, but if only made Mira laugh.
“I threatened to leave if he didn’t just get this over with. Anyway, the reason I came over is I just received a call from the hotel and it seems they made a mistake in my booking. Instead of 11 rooms, they only booked 10. Unfortunately... they’re also full.”
“So, what does that mean?” Natsu questioned the woman.
“Well, as singles I had booked you guys your own rooms, because the couples have theirs, which means one of you now doesn’t have one.”
“Oh. It’s okay Mira, I can try and find a room elsewhere for the night,” Lucy chimed in. “Don’t worry about it, it wasn’t your fault.”
“Why don’t we just share it?” Natsu then suggests to Lucy. “When we check in, we’ll just ask for a room with two beds.”
“Are you sure,” both Lucy and Mira questioned at the same time.
“Why not? I mean, I don’t mind.”
“Lucy would you be okay with that?” Mira questioned her friend. “I don’t want you to be uncomfortable.”
Lucy looked at Natsu, then back to Mira. “I’ll be okay. I mean, he’s not a stranger to me.” She laughed although inside she was a bit nervous about sharing a room with him.
“I won’t bite,” Natsu put his hands up in defense. “I swear.”
“Weirdo!” Lucy laughed.
Mira laughed as well. “Great! I’ll let the hotel know the room will be a double occupancy. You guys enjoy the rest of party. Check in is anytime after 4pm.”
“Thanks Mira. And congratulations again!”
Everything will be fine, Lucy assured herself. It’s just Natsu. She knows Natsu. He’s harmless. Spending one night alone together won’t kill her. Just think of it as more time to catch up. Maybe find out why he’s still single. ‘Stop that!’ Lucy chided her mind. She is not asking him that kind of question! Even though she is curious... more so now after having spent the last 4 hours being reminded of what a great guy he was. All the reason she’d crushed on him, his warmth, oof, his smile...
“Wait what?!” Lucy shrieked at the hotel receptionist. “There’s no rooms with two beds?”
“I’m very sorry ma’am, but we only have a few of those and they’re all taken already.”
“What about a roll-away?”
Again the woman shook her head. “We’re just a small country inn. We don’t have those.”
“Oh... my god...” Lucy breathed out. She’d have to share a bed with Natsu?!
Speaking of the man, at that moment, he gently coaxed Lucy away from the receptionist. “We’ll make it work, don’t worry, she’ll be fine,” he assured the woman. “Just give us the keys and we’ll be on our way.”
Once inside of the hotel room, Lucy surveyed their predicament. It was a king sized bed. Great, at least it provided a decent amount of space between them, and it was a very nice room... a bit too nice compared to a standard hotel room. Strange, but maybe it was the only option left because of the full capacity. Well, guess it wasn’t such a bad thing. She could think of it as a sleepover, like the kind they would have when they were teenagers.
The first thing Lucy did was change out of her formal party attire into something comfortable. When she exited the bathroom, Natsu was lounging on the bed, looking through the pamphlets the hotel left on the nightstand.
“What’re you reading?” She questioned him.
“It’s a pretty small hotel, no services, but they do have a restaurant open for lunch and dinner... oh and a pool.”
Lucy hadn’t brought a swim suit, so the pool was out of the question. “What time is the restaurant open till?”
“Um... 9pm.”
“Good. I’m not hungry yet, but in a couple of hours I will be.”
For the rest of the evening Natsu was weirdly quiet. He talked as needed, but it almost felt to Lucy as if he was trying to avoid something. Or maybe it was all in her head. Maybe Natsu was just as nervous as she was about arraignment and was doing his best not to make it uncomfortable. Their conversations were pleasant enough, catching up on their lives, their families, any new interests they may have developed. They’d become functional members of the community in careers they enjoyed. For all intents and purposes, their lives were normal, happy on the surface.
Around 11pm the pair agreed it was time to get some shut eye. It had been a long and contented day, but tomorrow they’d return to their own lives. They chose their respective sides, turning off the light and settled into bed facing away from each other.
As Lucy lay there, she reflected on how things had turned out and of their day. The thoughts in her mind loud against the silence of the darkened room. It felt weird, knowing Natsu lay less then two feet away. Or maybe it was simply weird sleeping in a bed with another person. It had been a couple years since her last failed relationship, so she wasn’t used to this feeling anymore. She didn’t know how many minutes had passed by when she’d heard Natsu shift in the bed and his voice, soft and hesitant cut through the inky blackness.
“Do you ever think about... us Lucy?”
What does he mean? “Us?” She parroted.
“I do sometimes,” Natsu continued. “I think about, what our lives would be like if I’d grown some balls and asked you out years ago... where would we be today?”
Lucy’s breathing slowed as she processed his words. Had she thought of it? Moisture slowly filled her eyes. Yes— yes she had, many, many times over the years. Every time a relationship failed, she thought about it. But she never blamed him because she was just as guilty for not saying something sooner. Yet here he was posing such a question.
Her eyes closed as she spoke. “What are you trying to say Natsu?” She felt him turn over and shift again, then a hand pulling, coaxing her to face him. Once she’d switched sides, Lucy could see his shadowed face, oozing with regret.
“I’m saying...” Natsu reached out and took her hand. “I wish we were an us. I’m saying I want to lay like this every night next to you, to wake up beside you, come home to you. Im saying... I don’t want this to end.”
Lucy squeezed his hand back. “Idiot!” Tears prickling the corners of her eyes. “Why didn’t you say something sooner!”
“I was afraid! Okay?! I thought you deserved better than me and I’d just hold you back!”
“Better?! It was always better together! All these years I’d been lonely and miserable cause no one could replace you!”
“I’m sorry!!”
A few seconds after the last words are screamed, laughter broke out from the two. Unrefined laughter at their own stupidity. They’d both been pining all these years and it took being stuck in a room together for it all to come crashing out.
“Natsu...” Lucy squeezed his hand again, “I’d really love to be an us too.”
He reached over and caressed her face. “I’ve always loved you Lucy, and I wanna make up for all the years we lost. But I have a confession to make.”
Oh, god what the hell now?! “What are you, actually married? No, divorced? Secret kids?! What?!” Lucy trembled as her euphoria threatened to crash down again.
Natsu scratched the back of his head nervously. “No! Nothing like that. The hotel didn’t make a mistake. Mira and I set this up so I could confess. I’d planned to do it earlier but couldn’t work up the nerve until I realized I was running out of time again...”
“Ohhh! Is that it?!” Lucy’s head lolled as she groaned. “You damn goof! You almost gave me a heart attack!”
“Im sorry!” He chuckled. “I just didn’t want you to find out later. And don’t blame Mira, it was my idea. I’ll make it all up, I promise. I’ll make you forget about those years of loneliness. I’m gonna make you so happy you—”
Lucy sighed. “Natsu?”
“Huh, yeah?”
“Just shut up and kiss me already.”

Nervous
“Good morning Your Grace! Rise and shine!” Anita came bursting into your room. She opened up your bedroom curtains, revealing the burning sunshine. You grabbed one of your pillows and buried your head under it.
“Oh gosh what time is it…” you groaned.
“Time to start getting ready. I’ll have your breakfast brought in momentarily.” Anita left your room just as quickly as she entered it. You removed the pillow from your head and sat up.
“Oh good you’re up.” Your mother, the queen, entered your room, followed by Anita and your breakfast tray.
“Thank you.”
“Eat up sweetheart. You’ll need your energy for today!” said your mother.
“Why must the ball be so late today?” You asked, “and why have you woken me up so early…”
“It’s the Midnight Ball Y/N! It’s tradition whenever the kingdom of Karasuno comes to visit,” she explained. You nodded.
The Prince of Karasuno would be next on your agenda. You had heard nothing but nice things about him. He was known to be responsible, kind, level headed, everything a future king would need to be.
“Your gown for tonight is getting finished up at the tailor’s. I’ll be picking it up in about an hour or so,” explained Anita.
“I’ll join you,” you said as you took a sip from your tea. Your mother shook her head.
“You have much to prepare for here, darling. Anita can take care of it herself.”
“I’ll only be gone for an hour or two. I promise I’ll be back in time,” you insisted.
“Very well… I’ll make sure your ride is prepared.” Your mother patted the top of your head before leaving your room. You looked at Anita, sighing.
“I suppose this is how things will be for a while. A ball every week, a new dress to try on, and someone new to see.”
“You’ll certainly never be bored, Your Highness. I’ll set out your garments for this morning’s trip and meet you outside.” Anita flashed you a bright smile before heading over to your closet, picking out a simple, light pink dress. She laid it on the chair of your vanity before leaving.
You finished your breakfast and got yourself ready then went to meet Anita outside.
“Ready to go, Your Majesty?” she asked. You smiled.
“Anita you know you can call me Y/N, and yes.”
The ride into town was smooth. It was an exceptionally beautiful day, birds chirping, the sun shining. You waved to whoever you saw as people eagerly noticed your arrival.
You arrived at the tailors right on time. It was a dainty shop, filled with endless piles of fabric and designs to fuel anyone's imagination.
“Good morning Your Royal Highness! Here to pick up your gown for tonight’s ball?” asked Mari, the shop owner.
“The Princess is also in need of one final fitting before we can take the gown back to the castle with us,” explained Anita. Mari nodded.
“Yes yes of course! Right this way my darling!”
She led you and Anita to where the mannequin stood, wearing the dress.
“Wow…”
It was an extravagant gown, black as the midnight sky. The sunlight peeking in from the windows bounced off of the small crystals, making it sparkle. It lastly had a matching cape, since the ball would take place at night.
“Mari you never disappoint, it is truly gorgeous,” you said.
“Oh thank you Princess. Here, let's get you laced up.”
The dress fit you perfectly as expected. It’s sweetheart neckline and floral detail looked stunning on you. Mari packaged up your dress as you waited with Anita.
“We actually have one last stop before we can head back,” she explained.
“Where?” you asked. Anita smiled.
“It seems that your prince has a gift for you.”
You and Anita walked along the streets of town until reaching the flower shop. You breathed in the scents of gardenias and lilies.
“Pick up for Y/N L/N,” explained Anita to the front desk attendant. They scurried off to the back cooler and brought out the biggest arrangement of flowers you had ever seen.
“Oh wow…”
It was a mix of orange and black roses, with a small card peaking out.
‘Until tonight Princess… -D.S.’
“D.S.?” you questioned. Anita chuckled.
“It’s from Prince Sawamura Daichi, Your Majesty.”
“He certainly knows how to make a girl smile,” you whispered.
“He’s perfect…” gushed Anita. You chuckled.
“We’ll see about that…”
~
As the day drew on, you found yourself back at home. You were finally getting ready for the ball, that started in just a few hours. You showered and wrapped yourself up in your silk robe. You walked into your room, where Anita was laying out your dress.
“Anita what do you know about Sawamura Daichi?” you asked. She chuckled nervously.
“Well I don’t know too much...but I know that he is a great leader with a kind heart. He puts others before himself and is devoted to helping others. Anyone would be lucky to have a heart like his.”
“It seems like you know more than you think,” you teased. Anita shook her head.
“Oh my apologies. Here, let's get you laced up.”
Anita cinched you up into your gown. She did your makeup and clipped on your cape.
“Stunning as always,” she smiled.
“Thank you. Shall we go?”
The garden was marvelously decorated with lights and lanterns. There was a grand fountain in the middle of it all, the floor a checkered pattern . The full moon shined above you, making the moonlight bounce off of your gown. You greeted people as they approached you, keeping one eye out for the Prince.
“Excuse me, You Grace?”
You turned around to see a man smiling at you with grey hair.
“Yes?”
“Princess Y/N L/N, I am pleased to introduce you to the marvelous, chivalrous, most handsome-”
“That’s enough Sugawara…”
“Oh right...Prince Sawamura Daichi, Your Majesty.” He moved out of the way, allowing the prince to step forward.
“My apologies, he tends to get carried away,” smiled Daichi. You chuckled.
“I actually liked your introduction,” you teased.
“I’m glad. Would you care to dance?” Sawamura pointed to the dance floor. You nodded.
“I would love to.”
You took his hand and he guided you to the floor, He bowed before you, then placed his hand onto your waist and held up your other hand.
“Thank you for the flowers,” you said. Daichi smiled.
“I’m glad they found you well. I wasn’t sure which flowers were your favorite so I decided to play it safe with roses.”
“I do love roses.”
“Do you have a favorite flower?”
“Not particularly. I love the assortment bouquets, that way I get a little of everything,” you explained.
“I see.”
Daichi spun you around the floor, keeping you close to you. His eyes almost as dark as the midnight sky, you could’ve fallen into them. As your hand rested on his bicep, you could tell just how strong he was. His strong build but gentle smile warmed your heart.
You watched as what looked to be a sweat droplet glided down the side of his forehead. You chuckled.
“Are you nervous?” you asked. Sawamura tilted his head.
“Nervous? What makes you say that?”
“It looks like you’re sweating.”
Daichi patted his forehead with the back of his hand. He smiled.
“That’s not sweat princess, that’s rain.”
The two of you looked up at the sky, seeing the clouds rolling over you. You closed your eyes, starting to feel the soft water trickle down upon you.
“Everyone inside!” shouted the king. People began to rush over to the doors, hiding under the walkway.
“Y/N, darling, you’re gonna get sick!” insisted your mother. As you soon became drenched by the rain, you looked to Daichi, who held onto your hand.
“I have a dance to finish,” you smiled. Daichi grinned, placing his hand back onto your waist and once again, guided you along the dance floor.
It was just the two of you, dazzling under the stormy moonlight. As lightning struck and thunder boomed, you kept your eyes on Sawamura. How he made you laugh, calling you reckless for proposing this idea. Even as the floor became even more slippery, you and Daichi didn’t stop. Soon, the orchestra came back, playing for you. Drums sounding along with the sound of thunder, causing goosebumps on your skin.
The two of you caught your breath, panting as water droplets dripped down your lips. You wrapped your arms around his neck, keeping you balanced. Without realizing it, yours and Sawamura’s foreheads were pressed against each other. Daichi locked eyes with you, placing his hand under your chin.
“I think it’s safe to say that you took my breath away.”
~
The two of you went inside the palace a short time later. Anita brought you both towels to dry yourselves off.
You now sat with the prince on the grand staircase. The two of you talked about all kinds of things. He told you about Karasuno, you told him about what there was to do around your kingdom. He listened happily to every word you had to say.
“You’ll have to show me around soon, I didn’t get to explore much today,” he said. You nodded.
“I would love to do that.”
“Excuse me, Your Highness, we must be going.”
You looked over to the man who entered with the prince earlier. You sighed, almost wishing he didn't have to leave.
“Very well, just one moment please.”
Daichi stood up from the steps. He helped you up as well.
“It was such a pleasure meeting you Y/N. I wish we didn’t have to part so soon,” he smiled.
“As do I. I hope you have safe travels, and the next time you’re here I will happily show you around.” Daichi smiled.
“I would love that.”
He carefully took your hand, kissing the top of it. He took his soaked suit jack and draped it over his shoulder before joining Sugawara. You sighed.
“He really is perfect.”

some V3 relationship HCs :) (boys)
(f/n)= first name <3
-mod velv
Tumblr media
K1-B0 (KIIBO)
★ I LOVE HIM-
★ anyway
★ Kiibo has a basic understanding of human nature, but there are things that he just.. doesn’t get
★ like.. why do you have so many cups?? don’t you need only a couple?
★ and yes, he supposes that rock shines, but why do you need it?
★ you’ll have to explain to him some of your nature, and most humans as well. he’s very interested in learning as much as he can :)
★ after he gets some of it, (which took a while), he’ll start collecting little things that remind him of you. like a crow
★ your reactions mean everything to him
★ if you have any games that require timing, i have one word for you.
★ Kiibo.
★ he can literally pass any levels you’re stuck on
★ did i mention he heats up?
★ even though he’s.. made of metal, he’s surprisingly very comfortable! however, there are times where some parts of him dig into you uncomfortably, but there are solutions :)
★ like sweaters!! and blankets
★ speaking of, i feel like Kiibo would have a love-hate relationship with winter
★ on one hand, he gets to see you in the snow, help you make a snowman, and keep you warm during the cold nights
★ but.. his body gets stuck more often.
★ and the metal gets cold quickly, and he doesn’t want you cold :(
★ but you just remind him of the sweaters and you’ve got a happy robot :)
KOREKIYO SHINGUJI
★ whenever you two go out, he always has to be touching you in someway
★ it’s never something big, and most times you don’t even notice him until later
★ more often than not, his hand finds its way to your back
★ it’s now a habit of his, to kind of lead you with that
★ if his hand isn’t at your back, i feel like it would be somewhere on your arm. like a linked arm, or he’s holding your hand so he doesn’t lose you in a crowd.
★ ok but his h a i r?
★ can i be a simp for hair
★ he definitely would let you, and only you play with his hair. like braiding it, brushing, etc.
★ i feel like he would rarely call you by your actual name, because he uses so. many. pet names.
★ “angel, could you grab that for me?”
★ “dearest, come here for a second.”
★ stuff like that smh oh to be called dearest by Kiyo
★ he’d tease you sometimes as well
★ if you’re shorter than him, he’d definitely hold things above his head so you couldn’t grab them. and if you’re taller than him, then oh boy. he’d hide stuff from you. not important things, but stuff you’d need only in that specific moment.
★ he also really likes to play with your fingers lol it helps him concentrate
★ ok but just imagine.. Kiyo in the middle of a conversation, you’re not really paying attention as you’re screwing around on your phone. suddenly, Kiyo’s soft fingers interlace between yours, giving your hand a squeeze before he begins to play with your index finger as he continues to talk. tracing the shape of it into his mind. almost like he wanted to make a copy of you.
★ he could never try to replicate you, though. you’re so perfect to him.
RANTARO AMAMI
★ TEASE KING. STEP ASIDE KOKICHI
★ Rantaro is definitely that dude that if you’re wearing a hat, he’ll pull it down over your eyes or he’ll just straight up steal it.
★ play with his hair plEASE-
★ his hair is soft, threads through your fingers rather easily, and smells like lime
★ y’all are that couple that has one’s head in their lap as they read or somethin, playing with the other’s hair.
★ he is also that dude that comes up behind you, covering your eyes with his hands as he whispers, “guess who?~”
★ Rantaro actually has pretty small hands, and they’re actually cold most of the time.
★ beware of him and his goddamn hands smh
★ he will definitely stick his hands under your shirt for “warmth” as he so says. you know that he just wants to see your reactions
★ he’s actually god at eyeliner, so if you need to wear some, he’s your guy. hey, the dude has sisters.
★ speaking of, his sisters absolutely ADORE you. usually when you go over to his house they just.. immediately snatch you for 99% of the time and Rantaro is just “😀”
★ he leaves you little doodles everywhere. like he’ll bring you a book you asked for, and like on the 120th page there’s a crow with heels and it's the funniest thing you’ve seen all day
★ he starts laughing when you bring it up, and eventually you both are just laughing so hard at it you can't breathe
★ he has so much fun when he’s with you. he can never repay you
SHUICHI SAIHARA
★ steal his hat steal his hat steal his-
★ Shuichi is flustered rather easily when it comes to you, so use that information to your advantage hehe
★ expect lots of cuddles from him, especially those back hugs. like the ones where he’ll come up behind you and wrap his arms around you, leaning his head on top of yours if you're shorter, or against your back if you’re taller.
★ he’ll let out a small sigh of content as he nuzzles into your form, trying to keep his face hidden.
★ he finds your voice so soothing, especially when you read to him? like watch this:
★ you two are working on one of his cases together. your job is reading out his notes from the scene, your voice a low murmur as he works away. you haven’t noticed that he’s just.. stopped writing, staring at his pen as he begins to play with it. scratchy handwriting is what his eyes rake over, an adoring smile plastered to his face as he just listens. eventually you notice he’s stopped. “..Shuichi?” your soft voice asks, and he jolts a bit, grasped from his daydream. “a-ah.. sorry (f/n).. continue?”
★ more often than not it's your murmurs that causes the sleep deprivation to slap him in the face and just be knocked tf out.
★ helping him with cases is one of your favorite things?? like Shuichi you’re so smart give yourself some credit?????
★ every morning he greets you with a small smile. even though he’s still really tired, he makes an effort for you :)

★ he lived all of his life on eggshells, scared of every coming day
★ and then you, his ray of sunshine, just came to him?
★ he’s just so lost
★ however, you knew what to do.
★ you basically taught him that no, you’re not going to disappear from his life at any given moment. you promise.
★ it took some convincing, but you got there.
★ anyway, he doesn’t show too much PDA, but he’s taken up the habit of grasping your sleeve when you two walk together
★ given the fact that you’re likely taller than him, this boy l o v e s your hugs.

★ they LOVED him and now you go there frequently to visit the cats
★ ya’ll definitely have a cat from there too smh you’re so cute
KOKICHI OUMA
★ at the earliest stages of your relationship, i have two words for you.
★ good luck.
★ you are not safe from Kokichi.
★ you are targeted by him.
★ anyway, i definitely feel like he would be so clingy with you.
★ he doesn’t care that you’re in public, he will latch onto you and be a nuisance.
★ holding onto your sleeve, holding your hand, latching onto your leg so you have to drag him around, full on trying to tackle you, etc.
★ p i g g y b a c k r i d e s

★ he LOVES it
★ i also feel like he wouldn’t really know what he’s doing at first.. you make him feel so many things, emotions that he thought were buried a long time ago. it’s a bit too much for him
★ patience is key with Kokichi. please just wait for him. he’ll catch up when he’s ready.
★ but when he does? and when you’ve convinced him you’re not leaving anytime soon?
★ you have the most caring and lovable man right at your side.
★ he’s.. so soft with you.
★ Kokichi absolutely adores being held by you. probably the most out of the V3 crew. he feels so secure, so sure of your relationship in those moments. he sleeps best when you’re around, which he desperately needs due the insomnia that plagues him most nights.
★ quiet cuddles are such a treasure to you. he’s usually silent during your cuddle sessions, his head either in the crook of your neck or buried in your chest, inhaling your scent so he can imprint it to his mind. it makes you more in love with him.
★ also DICE adores you-
KAITO MOMOTA
★ he is,, the biggest simp for you,,,
★ literally every single day, Kaito looks at you with the biggest grin on his face because every time he looks at you, he notices a new thing that makes him love you even more.

★ his coat is so warm?? you wonder how he wears it 24/7
★ he absolutely LOVES it when you tackle hug him. he doesn’t even care if he was in the middle of a conversation, just feeling the sudden embrace of his s/o makes him melt.
★ those tackle hugs usually end up in him turning around and scooping you up, spinning you around before planting you back down and giving you a sweet kiss
★ PDA? he loves it
★ he NEVER would do anything that makes you uncomfortable though.
★ your PDA mostly consists of hand holding, hugs, all that soft stuff :)

35. [4:28 pm]
➳ pairing: youngjae x reader
➳ genre/warnings: fluff, royal!au, prince!youngjae, lady!reader
➳ word count: 1,496 words
➳ summary: 35. “After you.”
➳ author's note: hello angels! i’m so so sorry for my recent absence, uni has been really busy. here is a youngjae fluff to make up for it! this is my first time writing this au so i’m excited to share this! it was a lot of fun and i got really inspired by nbtm + the wildflowers i saw on my trip :)) have a nice day and week lovelies <333
//
“After you,” Youngjae said breezily, a royal blue, satin covered arm coming up to brush a stray branch aside, clearing the path ahead for you.
“No,” You shook your head with a faux frown, refusing. “After you, Your Royal Highness.” Insistently, you rooted your leather high boots firmly onto the ground, not moving an inch.
“C'mon, Y/N!” He sighed exasperatedly, dramatically. Youngjae always harboured a burning hatred for formalities. “I know you liked our old spot at the top of the hill, but I swear you’ll love this place even better. I just want to show you a part of this kingdom that you’ve never seen before!” A glint of excitement flashed across your eyes at the mention of exploring another corner of his family’s vast lands. Sensing that you were about to cave to his request, the Prince hastily interlocked your fingers with his, guiding you through the dense forest just beyond the edge of the Royal Gardens. “Besides, as your host, I ought to bring you someplace that didn’t make you sneeze your brains out every other minute. The canola fields have triggered your allergies ever since you were a child.” Youngjae added.
“But I like the canola!”
Youngjae scrunched up his nose in distaste. “Well, I certainly don’t like explaining to your maids why their precious Lady turned into a swollen, slimy tomato by the end of our evening together and–”
“Okay, fine!” You squeezed his hand to signal your defeat. He couldn’t see your resigned, dejected look, the one that you wore every time he won an argument, but if he did, you’d bet on every single horse in your stables that he would clutch his stomach and double over in boisterous laughter. “You’ve said enough. Point taken.”
Satisfied, the Prince continued to lead you further into the forest. His pleasing, melodic whistles (charming renditions of folk songs, you supposed) were in harmony with the tunes of the lively forest. Your ears could easily pick up on the airy whispers of rustling leaves, the sweet sopranos of chirping birds and the trickling stream singing in an allegro tempo. It was shaping up to be quite an orchestra, with the one and only Youngjae taking centre stage as both lead singer and conductor.
Throughout the far-reaching kingdom ruled by the Choi dynasty, Youngjae was known as the precious youngest son of the reigning monarchs. The boy made quite a name of himself by gracing those around him with his sunshine smile and bright personality. There were even poems and songs written about the Prince’s ability to shine his brilliant light onto his people’s lives. Many claimed that the Prince had a heart of pure gold, as he would often roam beyond the gates of the Palace, interacting with the locals by personally buying his art supplies from the markets, painting murals and paintings for the young and old, and lending a hand whenever a carriage got stuck in mud or when an old grandpa strained himself while moving large crates of vegetables. The people often muttered under their breaths about how it was such a shame that Youngjae had little chance of claiming the throne, for he was the last in line after his elder siblings. But the Youngjae you knew and grew up with had never set his sights on being King. Ever since spending that first summer in the Palace with his eleven-year-old self, you were certain that he was meant for even greater things. Youngjae loathed politics and diplomacies. He hated pretending like someone he wasn’t, just for the sake of strengthening relations and maintaining peace. All Youngjae wanted to do was to live a carefree life and practice his art.
“We’re nearly there, My Lady,” Youngjae chirped in his best impression of a maid. “Just have to cross this tiny little stream.” The young royal came to a halt before the gushing stream, his free arm circling around your waist securely.
Your mouth went dry in an instant. The body of water a few steps ahead of you seemed like anything but a tiny little stream; it was fervently licking at the banks, swallowing and chomping up any leaf or branch or insect that stood in its way. You were deafened by the relentless roars of rapidly flowing water, causing you to shrink into his side in search of safety. Petrified, you glanced upwards at the Prince, shaking your head slowly to get your point across. You did not like this, not at all.
“I know you’re scared, Y/N, but I won’t let anything happen to you. Trust me. I’ll hold onto you so tightly that we’ll be stuck together like two peas in a pod.”
“But I… I don’t…”
“You’ll never get hurt, not on my watch.” Youngjae declared resolutely. He knew; he could tell from your shallower breaths and widening pupils that you were afraid of falling in, just like you did five summers ago. You and your brother loved spending time within the Palace’s walls, but you had taken a special liking towards the koi pond right at the heart of the Royal Gardens. Each summer when you returned to the Palace from your home in the Northern Lands, the trees and the flowers and the design of the Gardens would change beyond recognition. The pond was the only thing that remained untouched, year after year.
You used to love sitting by the edges and feeding the koi fishes or testing out your paper boats with Youngjae and your brother. You could stay there for ages, from sunrise until sundown. That is, until you accidentally tripped into the pond and nearly drowned. After that, you avoided it like the plague.
“If you’re really not comfortable with this, we can turn around, no big deal.” Youngjae reminded you in the gentlest voice he could muster. The stream was barely a meter wide, with a large sturdy rock smack bang in its centre, but he knew; he could feel the hesitation radiating off your skin. He was aware of how the minutes seemed to drag into hours as you gasped for air that afternoon, your feet straining and struggling to reach the bottom. Youngjae knew that the memory still haunted you.
Your clammy hands clawed onto his back, your fingernails leaving deep imprints through his luxurious tunic. Sensing his eagerness to show you this new hideout of his, you tried your best to swallow your fears and gave him a slight nod.
“You sure? We really don’t have to.”
“I swear, Choi Youngjae,” You whispered impatiently. “If you don’t move right now, I’m going to change my mind.”
He chuckled at that, all melodious and warm. His laughter felt like a blast of sunshine on a cool spring day, which did wonders to ease your nerves. He wasted no time in holding you close to his chest, similar to how you would position yourselves when dancing side by side in the Palace’s ballroom. “It’s a lot like dancing, really.” Youngjae said, inching towards the very edge of the stream. “You just have to coordinate your steps with mine. We’ve done this before a million times. Now, right foot, oh yes, your right. Okay, ready? Take a big step and –”
Your feet moved in perfect unison. The two of you arrived on the rock in the blink of an eye. “We made it.” You breathed out in disbelief.
Youngjae simply cradled you snugly in his arms for several moments. You relished in the immeasurable amount of security you felt being with him, while he grinned smugly at the sight of you finally overcoming your fear. “I told you so,” He pressed his lips against your ear and whispered.
The rest of the journey only took another five minutes. Before you knew it, you arrived at a small yet breathtaking clearing in the forest. The ground was decorated with a plethora of wildflowers emerging amongst tall grass, specks of white and gold and pink everlastings flooding your entire vision. In the middle of the clearing sat a large rock and a fallen trunk, the ideal place to sit down, catch your breath and take in the wondrous scenery.
Which was exactly what you and Youngjae did for the rest of the late afternoon. You drank from your flask of elderflower cider while inhaling the fragrant, floral perfumes surrounding you; Youngjae chewed on the end of his sketching pencil while also crafting a rough sketch of you in his notebook, resting on the trunk. You laughed and you talked, all while sharing a loaf of buttered rosemary bread you swiped from the kitchens this morning.
Much to your pleasant surprise, you didn’t let out a single sneeze. Not even when Youngjae passed you his sketch for your inspection and placed a white flower behind your ear. This was exactly why he brought you here, he claimed.
He was right. As it turned out, you loved this place the most.

Six [Ate] Ain’t Seven Ch. 2: Repairing the Seam
Summary: The Host and Patton go into the tear to save their future, and fight their past along the way.
Chapters: 1, 2
The two heroes were standing back outside the warehouses, but this time right in the parking lot to the east side of the warehouses. Logan and Virgil nowhere nearby. Patton was still in the suit, but the Host had changed.
He was in a pinstripe black shirt, a notebook in hand, but the thing that caught Patton were his eyes.
Namely that they weren’t just black sockets covered by bandages. They were there, his pupils the same color of brilliant gold that was normally streaked into the front of his hair.
“Ughhh!” The seer shielded his recently restored eyes from the sun. It had been a long time since light had hit his nerves like that. His visions and narrations had been his eyes but now having his old ones back were agony.
“Host!” Patton gasped, rushing to the Host’s side. “What can I do? Should I call Iplier?”
“He would not recognize the Host, and if the Host and Patton leave the warehouse parking lot without this reality’s anomaly they will have to re-enter and try again.”
“Yeah, but,” Patton began before the Host’s aura wrapped around his eyes to lessen the pain and disorientation. After a couple minutes he shakily got up, helped by Patton.
“I could go in alone,” Patton offered.
“Morality would not be able to find his way to the anomaly to retrieve it,” the Host denied. “Being alone would only increase the likelihood of failure.”
With that the Host began to lead Patton towards Dark’s main warehouse, with each step he gained strength, but also felt the Author trying to smother him out. People parted for them at even the sight of the Author. Dark was out dealing with a problem, the Host had made sure of it before even setting foot into this reality. So entering the office was easy.
The Host walked over to the huge family portrait and used his aura to tip it out of the way far enough to crack the safe open and extract a single black day planner. He then closed the safe and restored the portrait to its natural position.
“Is that what you were looking for?” Patton asked in confusion.
“Yes,” the Host answered. “Morality should not be fooled by the anomaly’s current appearance. This is a magical artifact that has the ability to destroy realities if used improperly.”
“Okay, so, we have it, then we can leave?” Patton looked around uneasily.
“Yes, and the Host and Morality should be quick,” the Host checked over the office to make sure everything was in order before starting to lead the Side out. But as they started leaving the warehouse the pull to return was only getting stronger.
Patton was mentally fading in and out of himself, like he was drowning at sea and barely able to keep his head about the frothy depths of his own mind. It felt like some part of him, some gaping, empty hole in his soul wanted to pull him back in. It was some cautious, hungry creature and Patton didn’t like him.
All it would take was the lightest shove to his attention, and he would be gone. He could see the parking lot in the distance. They were almost safe.
The Host was doing so well, the Author was trying to steal back control. But he was distracted when Illinois came stomping out of a portal with King following him. An errant squirrel scurrying off of him, and out into a random warehouse. King’s usual cape was gone, as was his child that typically clung to King. He was in his suit instead.
Illinois looked pissed, as if he’d kill the next person who spoke to him. As Illinois and the Host passed, the seer’s newly restored eyes tracked of their own volition and as he glanced at Illinois a sadistic sense of victory came over him. King was glancing between them in uncertainty.
“How’s it going lover boy,” the Author baited, the distraction giving him the push he needed. His feet stopped.
“Not now, shitbag,” Illinois grumbled, glaring at him as he kept walking.
“Not my fault you dug your grave with Mr. Right,” Author dared. “I mean, he gave you everything and you burned his base down. I’m a certified sadist, but at least I clean up after myself and don’t fucking get involved with my food.”
“Shut up,” Illinois seethed.
“I mean, did you see his face?” Author continued to goad, “I mean the one fucker you don’t kill and instead you fuck up so badly that he dumps your ass.”
“Shut up!” Illinois shouted, King and Patton looking between each other in unease. The two young men were attracting a crowd.
“I mean, you should have just fucked him and run, would have saved you both the trouble,” Arthur dared and Illinois screamed in a heartbroken fury before throwing himself at his brother and the two starting a fistfight.
Patton and King both called for Dark with their stars, not wanting the two to kill each other.
Dark immediately ripped open and portal and froze when he saw the fight. He saw the screaming and knew he’d been wrong to leave Illinois alone with his brothers while he was still so emotionally raw.
“Philly!” Dark shouted and yanked his adopted son through a portal. “A word!”
“He started it!” Illinois shouted in a rage before the portal closed.
Author had the good sense to wait until he was sure Dark was gone, reprimanding Illinois, to start cackling like a madman. The weight in his pocket was almost nonexistent.
“Did you see his fucking face?” Author laughed. “I think he was crying.”
“You’re a fucking dick, Art,” King glared at him. “You know that right?”
“Come on,” Author stood up and brushed himself off. “He deserved it. Besides it’s not like one slip up is going to kick Daddy’s favorite off his pedestal. I need to try much harder for that.”
“If you weren’t such a complete asshole, I might agree with you,” King glared at him. “Come on, that hero he was dating was the best partner yet.”
“And Phills chose his side,” Arthur reminded. “We all did. I don’t get why he’s so upset that his boyfriend didn’t like his choice.”
“Just once I’d like you to get a taste of your own medicine,” King sighed, before he turned to see a couple squirrels rush over and he let them climb up his leg and onto his shoulder while they chittered at him. “Gotta[1] go, one of the heroes is causing trouble over by warehouse six.”
“I’ll come with, it’s been a while since I had some fun,” Arthur grinned.
“Hey, maybe we should,” Patton began to suggest as the two other Lost Ones looked towards him, “go back inside, Author. I think you’ve had enough fun for now. We can fight them next time.”
Author was about to protest before Patton sent a calming wave towards him, and immediately there was this glazed look to Author’s eyes. He huffed out, already stomping away, “Yeah, whatever fun police. I hate that the Old Man stuck me with you.”
Patton rushed to catch up with his adopted brother, “I just don’t want you to get in trouble, or get hurt.”
“Too late for that Pat-attack,” Arthur reminded.
Patton smiled warmly, a smile that despite Author’s best efforts he couldn’t hate. The guy was sunshine personified. “Come on, I’m gonna[2] lose my touch if you keep smiling like that. I’m gonna[2] have to punch you in the gut or something.”
Still smiling, the two were about to head into Dark’s main warehouse, when someone walked over to them.
“Umm, Author?”
Author and Patton turned to see a young man standing not too far from them. He had an oversized purple hoodie with a green swirl on the front and back. He had a thick book held to his chest.
“You talking to me?” Author asked, pointing to himself.
“Yeah,” the young man nodded with a smile before pulling out a folded up note from his hoodie pocket. “Philly wanted me to pass this on. You know, to keep it off the record.”
“Oh,” Author smiled, suddenly overly smug and sure of himself. He plucked the note out of the young man’s hand and opened it.
Written in Illinois’s handwriting was:
“I want you outside 5th and Center St. We can settle this where Dark won’t see. I’m sick of your shit. Be there, or I WILL find you.”
Author chuckled, writing his bat back into his hands, “Well, well, if Daddy’s favorite wants his teeth kicked in, I’m more than happy to oblige. Hey buddy, you wanna watch a narcissistic asshole get his hopes and dreams crushed?”
The young man’s left eyebrow hitched up as he gave the Author a knowing look, “That’s certainly one way of putting it. Sure, I like watching a train wreck in motion.”
“Alright,” Author smiled. “I like you, I promise not to kill you immediately.”
“Thanks, I guess,” his tone clearly insulted. “You gonna[2] go, or should I go and jump off the roof of the closest warehouse? I got stuff to do.”
“Hmmm,” Author hummed. “You got a name?”
“Karl Jacobs,” Karl smiled again as he watched Author write down his name. “With a “K” and it’s not short for “Carlton” either.”
“Boy, aren’t you just dumb as shit?” Author chuckled to himself as he crossed out the first spelling and wrote the correct one.
At that Karl just glared at him, but didn’t say anything.
“Not my fault this is your first day on the job,” Author smiled.
“Hey, uh, maybe we shouldn’t,” Patton began but stopped when he saw the look in Author’s eyes.
“Not my fault Ills wants his teeth bashed in,” Author waggled his finger before he turned and started heading towards the parking lot again, moving quickly to get to where he thought Illinois was. “Come on, I’ve been dying for a rematch.”
“Yeah, but,” Patton tried to interject.
“So give me some motivation,” Author told Karl as they kept walking, ignoring Patton completely. “What makes you tick?”
“Well, one of your dads killed my dad,” Karl admitted.
“Well, Wil kills a lot of people so you’re going to have to be specific,” Arthur shrugged, slugging his bat over his head, causing Patton to quickly duck as he was racing to keep up.
“No, I meant Dark,” Karl corrected. “My dad was doing some dumb things, hoping to blackmail him. But he died and now I have to deal with the bridge.”
“Ohhh, that was your dad,” Author realized. “Man, he was an idiot.”
“So do have, like, a grudge against us then?” Patton asked as they were weaving around cars.
“Kinda,”[3] Karl admitted, “but only to Dark, and don’t worry it’s not enough to screw you guys over. You guys weren’t even adopted yet and Dark was just looking out for his kid.”
The suspicious part of Arthur’s brain lit up like a series of waved semaphores, how did this asshole know I’m adopted and not their actual kid‽
“How—” Arthur asked as his feet finally crossed the invisible barrier of the parking lot, and the Host woke back up. He had just enough time to pull Patton along with him as their exit ejected them out of the little pocket reality.
The three of them stepped into the white of the In-between. Patton suffered the most disorientation.
“You back to normal?” Karl asked.
“Yes,” the Host started coming back to himself more and more, fighting the vestiges of the Author still left inside of him. His eyes were gone again and covered with bandages, but blood was coming from the sockets. “The Host is in control.”
“Good,” Karl told him, before slapping him in the arm with his huge book. “That’s for being a jerk.”
“The Host deserves that,” the Host flinched away from the blow.
“Yeah, yah[4] did,” Karl agreed.
“Is everyone still okay?” Patton asked fearfully.
“Yes,” the Host answered, talking out the day planner. “There is still time for the Host to fix their mistakes. Thanks to Karl, the Host and Morality can still remember everything.”
The Host turned his attention towards where his aura was telling him Karl was, “The Host cannot thank Karl enough for intervening.”
Karl shrugged, “You’re the one who gave me the note, I’m just here to help.”
“So we’re going back home, right?” Patton asked. “I want to go home.”
“The Host has what they need,” Host promised. He turned to Karl. “Does Karl need assistance in returning back to the city?”
“I’m stuck here until I die again,” Karl sighed, looking at the castle in the distance, his breath stuttering a bit. He was not looking forward to the pain, nor the disorientation, that always followed moments like this. Usually dehydration or starvation got him.
“The Host can help with that,” the Host’s aura gripped the back of Karl’s head. “After all, Karl did save the Host, it’s only fair for the Host to return the favor.”
Karl felt the sensation of failing before his mind fell out of this reality, right into the white void of the In-between, and then he was yanked back upwards and into a hospital room where he was weak but alive. Hospital machines beeping and giving him life, and the dull chatter of a nurse talking with another doctor.
He stirred and the hospital room flew into action, the nurse immediately paging Quackity who would rush from a meeting to sit by his fiancé’s side as he started his recovery treatment.
Back in the In-Between, the Host used the anomalies to keep the hole he’d ripped open for Karl pried open so that they could easily step through.
“Morality should go first,” the Host ordered the Side. “The Host is hesitant to take the anomaly through before Morality. In case it strands him alone in the In-between.”
“Oh, thanks,” Patton said and stepped through, his suit changing back to his superhero outfit and his freckles fading behind his mask. He felt a hum of his magic surge back, and a connection with Thomas was restored as if he was waking back up from a terrible dream. Patton hadn’t even realized he’d been disconnected from it in the first place.
The Host stepped through after, two black day planners in his hand. The tear was still there but fragmenting by the second. Curling his aura around the day planners they began to turn into dust and swirl together until a single planner was held in the Host’s aura.
With that the tear that had been long since been a nuisance and a threat to the Host was fully disconnected. It became one of the hundreds of thousands of alternate worlds loosely ringed around theirs. No more a danger to him than the dark mirror world that the Host and his allies had found themselves in not so long ago.
“Morality!” Logan yelled as he and Virgil were running over.
With a couple narrations, the Host sent the Sides back to their home to rest, Virgil would be salty and upset at the Host. But the Sides would be together, and that was what was important.
The Host ripped a portal into Dark’s office and saw Illinois sitting and talking with Dark. The Entity was discussing some Network business and some details about Illinois’s upcoming wedding.
The seer stalled a bit, not expecting to see Illinois at this moment. He felt apprehension, his actions under the Author’s insidious influence came back to his mind.
“You okay?” Illinois asked, noticing the hesitant way the Host was holding himself.
“No,” the Host answered. “The Host does not deserve the adventurer’s kindness, nor his consideration. The Host is a terrible brother, he always continues to be so.”
“Hey, hey,” Illinois kicked his feet up and walked over to the Host. He signaled over to Dark, who summoned a portal and seamlessly sent them to the Manor. It was not ideal for the Host but the action had already been done. “What’s this about?”
The Host began explaining to Illinois, to the best of his physical abilities, what he had done. The situation of their missing brother. That Patton had been the price to keeping them safe, but also he told Illinois of his barbed words to Illinois. How at his core he was not any different than the Author.
“Host, Host,” Illinois cut in, curling his aura around the Host, instead of suddenly grabbing onto him, so he didn’t startle him. “Yeah it does concern me that you can just make one of us permanently disappear. I don’t know who this “Patton” was but I’m certain that if he helped you then he was one of the best brothers we ever had. But you’re not a terrible person, you’re doing your best. You were just trying to look out for us.”
“That does not excuse what the Author has done,” the Host cut him off. “Or what the Host has done.”
“No, it doesn’t,” Illinois agreed seriously. “Artie was a lot of things: a pain in my ass, desperate to reenact “Lord of the Flies” and kill me. But he was my brother, and besides Kay, he knew what it was kinda[3] like to be unwanted for a long time. I think both of us forgot that. But now you’re here, and you’re my brother too.”
A smile came back to Illinois’s face, “Besides, you being so worried about me proves that you don’t mean to hurt me. That we’re brothers.”
“The Host supposed that Illinois may have a point,” the seer reluctantly agreed.
“Of course I do,” the adventurer gave him a smug smile. “Trust me more, we’re both in this together. Although, I should admit, I do appreciate not being attacked or threatened with a bat on a regular basis. That, plus you helping me protect 아빠[5] makes you a much better brother than he ever was. If that makes you feel better?”
“The Host is somewhat eased by the adventurer’s words, yes,” the Host agreed.
“Alright, you want to spend the rest of the day with me, or should I take you to the heroes, your eyes are bleeding pretty badly.” Illinois was looking in concern at the seer’s face.
“The Host originally had important matters with the Entity, ones that he cannot put off,” the Host corrected. “The Host was not expecting to see Illinois in his office.”
Illinois lightly whistles, a huge smile splitting his face. “I threw you off your game? Never thought I’d see the day.”
“The Host was pressed for time, he couldn’t check before he opened the portal,” the Host snapped back.
“Sure, I got yah[4],” Illinois chuckled, taking off his hat and tapping on the bronze star hidden inside. “you’re still seeing your boyfriend after this though, your eyes need cleaning before they get infected.”
Dark came to them in an instant, a flurry of overprotective worry.
“Is everything alright?” Dark asked as he portaled in, he was looking Host over for any wounds or signs of a fight. The Host let him fret as he looked at him.
“Yes, the Host was merely discussing something with Illinois,” the Host reached into one of his pockets with his aura and pulled out a plain black day planner. “The Host merely wished to return this to the Entity.”
“Oh,” Dark patted himself down to find his planner was missing and quickly took it back. “Thank you, I didn’t realize it was gone.”
“Yes, the Host had to borrow it for a little while,” the Host told him. “He thanks the Entity for his assistance.”
Dark paused to think about that, confused and suspicious, but he chose not to comment on his thoughts. He turned and headed back to his office.
Host watched him go, aware of the presence watching them. Watching Dark’s every move. Carefully the Host spoke wards into being and they quietly curled around the Entity, protecting him from harm. The Host would have eliminated the threat completely, but such was not in his power. He wasn’t strong enough to disrupt the anomaly entirely, but he would protect what was his. He would protect his family from the Actor, or any other threat.
No matter the cost.

Post A/N: Information on Lost One Patton: his superpower was empathy manipulation. He was the emotional heart of his family and helped keep Author from getting too violent with his siblings. As such Patton and Author were close. His codename in the Network was: Pathos.  Also since he has a January birthday, and Author had a February one, that makes him the eldest Lost One, by barely a month.

May 15th - Lyn's Writing Event - Thorin
Prompt - mamihlapinatapai
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A/N: Part 2 of the Prompt for Beach
Summary: You wake with doubts that your husband truly wanted to consummate your marriage.
Warnings: SMUT, angst
The unfamiliar aspects were a great deal stranger. Like your husband's bare chest beneath your cheek, the harsh curl of his chest hair painfully loud against it. A heavy arm of his looped over and around your waist.
There were some familiar aspects to waking up. Like your husband's snores ringing softly. Unfortunately, the prickle of sweat had also become normal. The storm from yesterday should have lifted the humid heat, but it still hung off the ocean.
Usually he rose before you, but as you adjust a leg, just a hair, you feel the deep ache in your hips, and the swollen, delicious soreness that was nestled between them. It reminded you on just why he was still asleep.
Dwarven lovers. You'd heard they had stamina. You'd heard they were well-endowed. You heard about the satisfaction they brought. The king lived up to everyone of those stereotypes. After the tears on the beach, the confession you'd given him, and the delicate kiss he'd given you, here you were. Unfamiliar in his arms.
It was strange, everytime his breathing changed, you'd hold yours, desperately begging for him not to wake up and tear you from this beautiful dream.
Instead, you thought about the way he touched you last night. The bath you'd shared, like your wedding night where you washed and braided each other's hair awkwardly. Only last night wasn't as awkward.
Instead, water sloshed in the bath as lips drew on lips. You remember the both of you slipping in the tiny tub, reaching desperately for his thick arms and shoulders to grip as your bodies slipped against one another, not quite uniting in the way you craved.
Instead, you just clumsily devoured each other in the water. Grinding and arching against each other. Your nipples hardened at the lapping his tongue gave them in the bath.
And finally his hand had slipped between you both and you nearly slipped under the water at the feeling of his big fingers stretching you to delerium.
A shiver ran through you. Perhaps another bath was in order. But what if the king had changed his mind again? This was supposed to be a political marriage, after all.
But remembering mounting him on the edge of that tub, after the water had gone cold vanished the thought for a moment. His mouth on your throat as you sunk down onto him for the first time.
It pinched, not wanting to fill you immediately. And when you had finally encased him fully, he gave a shuttering gasp and pulled you to his chest. He stroked at your back and thighs as your face pressed into the crook of his neck. He was so large it felt like you would split in two. And he let you rest until you were ready to move, whispering things in Khudzul to you.
That served to both turn you on and sooth you.
And then your hips were rocking and the king was sinking into the the cold water with you. No one cared that most of the desperate movements were sending waves of bath water to the floor, tongues tangling again.
Nothing made you so delirious as in the middle of the night, him waking you up by sliding into you again.
The storm stopped long before either of you had.
When Thorin shifted against you, pulling you tighter, you felt a familiar bulge bump your thigh. Your reaction was immediate, you were throbbing already with want. When he had stilled, you hoped you could sneak away to carefully untangle from him. The doubts of your mind eating you.
You felt as if you'd coerced him and guilt gnawed at your mind like a hungry animal.
You didn't have to detangle yourself from him because a loud, urgent knock sounded, rousing your husband from sleep. His reaction was to roll over you, dragging the sheet up to cover you and bark an order. The door opened and Dwalin was standing there, smirking.
"I know my king is resting from a long night, but promised to be in a meeting at sunrise." Based on the streaking of light, it was past sunrise. Your husband gave a groan, and began dragging himself from the sheets.
"I will be there shortly, Dwalin." Your friend gave you a raunchy grin as he closed the door. It made your heart thump wildly in your chest.
Thorin dragged himself out of bed quickly, reaching for trousers, his hair falling in messy waves. He paused when you shuffled up toward the head board. A look his eyes. A confliction in his face.
"Don't let me keep you longer than I have, Thorin," you murmur, tucking the sheets to your body. He gives a nod but watches you a moment longer. His frown is deepening and he finishes tying his trousers.
He gives a sigh, shaking his head like he's trying to shake thoughts away, and his tunic is being swiped off of the foot of the bed and dragged over himself. "I should tell Dwalin to reschedule the meeting."
"What? Why?" You ask, attempting to sit up but wincing at the soreness that wouldn't let itself be forgotten. Thorin was at your side immediately, hand reaching for your thigh. The heat of his palm sent tingles to the apex of your thighs.
"I should have been more delicate with you yesterday. I'll send for a healer." His eyes fluttered down, guilt and concern filling his gaze. You followed it, glancing down to see the bruises and bites that littered your collar, chest and shoulders.
"That's nothing." You promise, looking to your husband. He sighs deeply and shakes his head. You desperately didn't want him to regret the coupling of last night.
"I still should have-"
You cut him off by quickly leaning forward with flushed cheeks and pressing a quick kiss to his mouth. His expression flutters into something gentler, but still sad.
Carefully, he reaches up and tugs the sheet. You grab for them, startled and embarrassed. "What are you doing?"
"Evaluating your injuries, there is no reason to shy from me." When you didn't relent to him, he set his jaw, frowning. Then he reached for your legs. You squeak when he hooks his hands under your knees and drags you to the edge of the bed. And gently he peels the sheet away as he hovers over you.
Need is flaring through your body as he gazes over you. His eyes glance over the bruises on your hips where he'd gripped you too hard. There was an outline of his teeth on your thigh still that he gently thumbed over. Guilt rose again in his eyes.
And he lowered himself, making you moan softly as his beard and lips brush over the bite. "You shouldn't do that. You have to go," You whimper.
Thorin sighs, drawing back up to see your needy expression. "Aye, my queen." And with a final caress, he parts from you.
Later, when you joined during him to eat at dinner, you received many questioning looks due to the high necked dress you wore, thanks to one of the barrowed hand maidens.
You didn't get to speak to him most of the days, but you didn't miss the longing looks he gave you. They made your heart race.
Mamihlapinatapai.
Dwalin settled beside you as the rest of the nobles left the dining hall. He passed you a friendly smile. "I wondered which one of ya would cave first."
"What do you mean?"
"He's been mad for ya since Rivendell, you know. I think he just needed to know you cared for him too."
"Rivendell? So..." You gulp, "so he feels the same for me?" Dwalin frowned at your words.
"You're his queen. He wouldn't have laid with you last night if you weren't his One, lass."
A thrill went through you. Hope shining in like a ray of sunshine. Perhaps he could be a proper husband. You trusted Dwalin with your life. Maybe it was time to step up your game.
The door creaking open revealed your husband entering. He glanced at you, eyes dipping over your silken robe.
He approached as you stood and made your way toward him. "Y/N," he hums. He watched as you untie the robe, eyes lighting up, then flashing with guilt at the discoloration he'd caused.
"Make love to me, my king." He blinked at you.
"After what I did to you, you still want me to touch you?" You step up and wrap his arms around you.
"It didn't hurt. You didn't hit me. Your intention was pleasure not pain." Gently you reached for his face, and with every ounce of will you could muster you brush some of his hair from his face. "I am so in love with you." His expression flutters and this time you catch the glimpse of hope in you. The king surges his mouth against yours.
"I love you," he murmurs around your lips. The sound of it steals your breath. Yes. And he couldn't stop telling you the rest of the night.
A visual representation of me trying to post yesterday... Thank you, Lyn for letting me post it today instead.

Gold Dust Woman
Summary: Set Pre-Ragnarok. Inspired by the song Gold Dust Woman. The goddess of temptation and sorcery is ruled by no man and doesn’t do love. You prefer to sleep around and mess with men’s heads for fun. Loki is just the newest in the line of people who have taken to you. He wishes for you to rule beside him as queen, but that type of life isn’t made for you.
Pairing: Darker!Reader x Loki
Warnings: 18+, Smut, Cursing
A/N: This is so different from my usual writings, and I really like it. This isn’t a happy, reader falls in love type story. Reader in this is so unlike me, it was a lot of fun to write. Also the drug mentioned is 100% made up.  Bold Italics are song lyrics
Tumblr media
In theory, being Asgardian is excellent. Thousands of years to experience the realms, powers that mortals dream of, and being worshipped sound wonderful. The little ones desire to be a goddess like you. Royalty is everything one wants. However, it’s monotonous. No good being loves the goddess of temptation and sorcery. They don’t leave you offerings or pray to you. You’re remarked on the same level as Loki. The people crave a white-veiled princess, and you’ve never been that.
Your lips are on his the moment he opens the door. There’s not a minute for him to digest your presence. The kiss is harsh, your teeth clash together and Loki moans into the kiss. You bite his lower lip to allow the kiss to deepen. His hands dig into your hips and yours lightly tug his hair. The two of you move until your back hits the wall. You pull him down, leaving him kneeling before you.
“What would people say, seeing you kneeling before someone?” you tease.
“What they don’t know is for the best, my love.”
He identifies his place and lifts your dress up and you move your leg over his shoulder to give him better access. Loki starts to move his tongue against your folds and you moan out from the feeling. He continues to tease you until you pull his head back to look at you.
“Continue teasing me and you won’t cum,” you threaten the mischievous god. He nods and moves back to your core. This time he doubles his efforts and fucks you on his tongue. Your hips move and you’re thrusting down on his face. The pleasure accumulates and you orgasm. The good boy that he is, Loki licks up every drop.
You pull him up to reach your lips and kiss. During the kiss, you wave away both of your clothes and activate a birth control spell. The goddess of seduction can’t get pregnant, it would ruin your image. The kiss continues until you reach the edge of the bed. You push him down and straddled his hips.
“I do love seeing you on top of me, it’s a beautiful sight,” he gushes to you.
“Keep being this sappy and I’ll find a new God to fuck,” you warn.
You hold his cock and guide yourself down on it. Once you’re seated fully, you move his hands to the headboard and lock them with a wave of your hands.
“Are these really necessary?” he complains.
“No, but I like the way they look. Plus, it reminds you where you truly belong.”
You start a quick pace, not looking for a sweet lovemaking session. You rock back and forth roughly and scratch his chest as you do. His torso looks as if a cat has clawed it up, and the sight sends you over. This, in turn, causes him to fill you with his cum.
You pull the sheet up on Loki before getting up and magically cleaning yourself up and reappearing your dress on the ground.
“You’re a shitty person, but a fantastic fuck,” you remark while redressing.
“It’s not like you’re quite sunshine, dear,” Loki quips back. He’s lying in his bed with his wrists still fixed to the bed frame. The sheet rests low on his hips and you can’t help but appreciate his physique once again.
“Is that what you want? A little blushing maid to control?” you ask as you straddle him once again. Leaning to his ear, you whisper, “We both know you could never be satisfied without me dominating you.”
His laugh is dark, and he doesn’t refute the statement. He would crawl the grounds naked for you if you asked. You will never truly be his, but he will always be yours.
You flick your wrist to remove the binds and free him. While keeping him tied up and hidden away seems ideal, he has duties as king to see to. You’d rather him as Odin than Odin himself running this wretched kingdom.
“Why won’t you accept my proposal as Queen?” he inquires while dressing himself.
“You and I both realize I’m not made for that.”
“We should rule the realms together, would that really be so terrible?” Yes, It would. You think to yourself.
“I’m no Queen,” you reply.
“I’m no King, and yet…”
“You were born for this life. The regal manner you have to conduct yourself, the diplomacy, the fights. It all fits you. I was born for revenge. I spend my nights high or drunk, fucking whoever falls into my sight. I tear apart relationships and fool people for fun! And I like it. I’m no Queen Loki, get that through your head!” you snap at him.
“If the people truly saw who ruled them, they would quiver in fear. I’m a fucking monster, or don’t you remember? I’m what parents warn their children of.” he spats shifting into his frost giant form.
“They warn of your race, not you. You really want to compare who's the bigger monster?”
“You’re not a monster.”
“Yes, I am. The sooner you realize this the better,” you sigh and walk out of the room.
—————
When you live thousands of years, the people in lesser worlds start to write stories of you. They call you gods and try to make sense of the senselessness way you impact their world. Thor is named Zeus to the Greeks and Jupiter to the Romans. You, on the other hand, are known as Peitho to the Greeks. The goddess of persuasion and seduction. They also created you into the story of the sirens, beautiful women who lured men to their death.
Most of the stories were true. There was a time when you seduced men and killed them. It wasn’t a high point of your legacy. But you never claimed you were innocent.
A few days after the fight with Loki, he came to apologize. Claimed the pressure of the throne was too much.
“Nobody told you to steal your father’s identity and be the ruler,” you quip back. Sympathy wasn’t a virtue you had.
“Father wasn’t fit to rule anymore. Thor isn’t around, too busy gallivanting around to care for his home,” he replied.
“Still didn’t mean you had to be king.”
“Want to destress, Allfather?” you tease just to get him to shut his whining up.
“What have you in mind, lover? He asks. The word lover leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but you ignore it.
“Snagged some Ferðalags last time I ventured the forest. Turned them into a potion to drink. Wouldn’t mind sharing,” you offer the vial. You consume the drug with him and spend the next four hours high forgetting the world.
It was only a matter of time before Loki begged for marriage again. He was planning to reveal himself as Loki soon and wished to have a wife for that. You never would love him though, and marriage went against every part of your being. A better person would cut off the relationship, leave him now before it ruined him. But you couldn’t, you enjoyed messing with his head and body too much.
 Tensions were running high amongst the realms. Loki’s approach to diplomacy and ruling wasn’t being taken to quite as he hoped. Rumors of Thor fighting and trying to bring peace about spread, and while he didn’t speak you can tell the mischievous God is worrying. You weren’t one for comfort, but you were fairly good at one of the best ways people relax.
Loki was sitting in the throne room, atop his chair. It was late, so he was in his true form instead of hiding behind the face of his father.
“Why are you here so late?” you ask.
“It takes a lot to rule a kingdom, dear,” he replies.
“You know what they say.”
“Hmm?” he questions.
“Rulers make bad lovers,” you remark.
“Is that so?” he asks, beckoning you closer with his stare.
“You better put your kingdom up for sale,” you declare walking to straddle his hips.
“I feel like I should fuck you in this throne for that statement.”
“Honey, the day you are the dominant one in this relationship, is the day I become the Goddess of Marriage.”
“Then you fuck me in this chair,” he suggests sharply.
You tug down his pants, not bothering to completely undress. You hike the long dress you have on up and he whines upon the realization that you had nothing underneath. You readjust your position and take him in one swift drop of your hips.
“This is how I would like to go, encompassed by you,” he remarks as you move your hips against his.
You lean forward to meet his lips as his hand snakes between your bodies. Instead of connecting your lips, a moan falls from them against his. It’s erotic the motion, and he groans against you. You quicken your pace and your head falls against his shoulder, unable to hold yourself up as you fuck yourself on his cock.
It doesn’t take long for you to come apart as he releases into you. You sit for a moment to catch your breath and then wave a hand to clean the mess.
“You could stay awhile, just sit with me,” he breathes.
“Loki,” you sigh.
“Loki what? Why can’t you let me love you!”
“You knew I didn’t do that! That isn’t me,” you snap, aggravated. He kept trying to make you into someone you weren’t. You warned him before the first hookup. Why didn’t he listen?
“It could be. I wasn’t supposed to be regal. I was supposed to die.”
“You wanted to change. You hated who you were. I love being this!” you shout waving your hands to emphasize the point. “I love fucking anything with a pulse! I love killing those who cross me. I love seducing people and watching their lives crumble as a result! I love being a witch in every sense of the word. I don’t get why you can’t understand that. I don’t want to be your fucking queen!” The entire declaration causes his face to fall.
“I love you,” is all he manages to mutter.
“Then I’m sorry to shatter your illusions of love, and what it should be. But this isn’t love.”
“Then I guess this is done.”
“I think I should visit Midgard for some time,” you suggest.
“I figure that’s for the best.”

What We Left In The Past
Summary: Sometimes, a sad memory is just a good memory given time.
Characters: Virgil, Virgil’s spider sisters, Durant (mentioned)
Notes: I read this ask and thought of how much I need to read a fic of it before I realized.. I can write it
It’s also on AO3 because why not
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Virgil had just finished discussing some trivial matter with his gentries.
Well, trivial for him at least.
A hundred years ago none of them would have probably had this meeting in the first place.
If only the present was as simple.
He left as soon as he could, tired of discussions that reminded him of the wreckage his brother caused during his time on the so called throne.
Still, he didn’t travel through the shadows. opting instead to take the long way through the woods.
It was a lovely autumn day, breezy yet sunny.
The sunshine shone on the orange and red leaves, making the forest glow in an array of colors that reminded him of one of his favorite people.
It wasn’t as if he had somewhere to be now as well.
Patton was still in his job driving the ice cream truck, Logan was in college and Roman wouldn’t be back from his for a quite a few hours still.
There was no danger to fight, no charm called for his attention.
Just a lovely day in a lovely forest with his lovely chattering sisters.
He mostly tuned them out, only occasionally joining the conversation with a hum or a laugh, immersed in the beauty of the forest.
That is, at least, until he came upon a small pond.
“Oh"
He could have missed it, easily.
The pond looked like any other pond; vaguely circular and filled with chilling water, the green plants floating in its edges.
It could have been any pond.
Except that it couldn’t. It really couldn’t.
His sisters quieted, curious and sharing in his melancholy, though they didn’t quite know why.
Virgil crunched down, touching the big rock by the side of the pond.
It was still here, still intact and clear.
So many years had passed, yet the engraved drawing of a spider and a snake floating on the waves never smoothed out of the stone.
One of his sisters skittered across his arm until she stepped onto the finger barley brushing the stone.
"It’s-” he began to answer the unasked question in her eyes.
“Addar and I, we engraved it after he learned to swim”.
Oh the snake
That flighty flighty snake
The bad brother. He was not nice
Not nice at all
Bad bad-
an explosion of voices answered him.
They knew of the name “Adder”, of course. Impossibly long ago, there was a time when he still sometimes let it slip out.
It didn’t take long for him to stop entirely.
He didn’t think ‘Adder’ ever became part of his name anyway.
His sisters stopped taking as he opened his mouth to speak again. It was not often that Virgil spoke of the time before they came out of the dark and air.
“He wasn’t always like that”.
Sometimes, Virgil wished his brother had always been a monster, always a horrible guy.
In bad days, Virgil wondered if he had been tricked as well by his brother.
Fallen for his easy charm, manipulated from the moment they met.
In worse days, Virgil thinks back to the early days, searching for any detail of their childhood, any lesson he might have given Adder to turn him into the monster that was the Serpent King.
He hated his brother for what he’s done.
Hated him for betraying his trust, for taking a hundred years and everyone during it away from him, for leaving only broken glass and blood scattered across the forest in the suspicion and terror of seelie.
Virgil despises the Serpent King.
But he loved Adder.
“At the beginning, years before you were even here,” he continued, “Adder- he-” Virgil shook his head, as if the right words would fall from his memory if he only shook hard enough.
“I taught him to swim. We laughed together, played together. I was so alone before mother had made him, but with him..” Virgil took a deep breath and let it blow out slowly as he sat crossed legged in front of the stone.
“It started small, the warning signs, but I didn’t want to believe it was serious, I couldn’t. He poke fun at me as I did him, I was his guide through the forest when he first appeared, I pulled him out of the tree when he couldn’t even climb out of it himself.
He was my brother and was as dear to me then as you are now.”
Oh brother, brother
Too long, too, too long ago
No matter, no matter
It’s better, better now
“Yeah,” he gave them a weak smile, “I’ll take you over him any day. You’re wonderful.”
Sweet brother
Such kind words
You flatter and flatter
Such a nice brother
Yes, yes we prefer you too
Love, love, love, we love you brother
“You still can’t come with me to Patton later” Virgil stood up and dusted his clothes clean.
“We don’t need to spook him or any of the other workers again”.
Silly brother
We won’t spook him
We know better now
We’ll be nice
Worry, worry worry..
We want to see
The smokey chariot fascinates us
So fast, so fast they go, how are they so fast?
He let the chatter wash over him again, continuing to walk along the shimmering forest.
Leaving the pond behind.
V: oh i LOVE this so much - i already commented on AO3 but i cried all over again seeing it here!!!!!
Year 3 Part 1- No Cursed Vaults Allowed
Hey everyone! I’m back with Year 3 for the adventures of my MC! This will feature some new characters including an in depth look at his parents. I have a feeling it will be the best year yet! Enjoy! Comments and feedback welcome!
Summertime was an ideal season for many things, muggle and wizardfolk alike: cookouts, nights out at the pub, parties, celebrations, holidays to the beach, picnics, visitations to relatives, etc. It was just too bad David Grant was given no opportunity to enjoy any of it.
The start of the summer break began badly and only got worse from there. Unlike the end of his first year, there was no hiding the truth of what he had been up to. Some junior reporter managed to get wind of the cursed ice story despite all attempts of the school to lessen its impact. Though he wasn’t mentioned by name, his parents had gone through this nightmare once before and it didn’t take a genius to know their second son indulged in the cursed vaults same as their first born. The result was not pretty.
His mother’s reaction was the most severe- she railed for hours about irresponsibility, jeopardizing his education, the fact she told him not to get up to the same type of foolishness as his brother and what that meant to the family. All the while, David winced and tried to resist covering his ears, though a small woman of only 5’4, her presence was no less intimidating by those who knew her. The piercing blue eyes and mother bear persona was enough to make even the largest man quake in their boots. Which meant he received no help from his dad in that regard.
His father, a man of about six feet with still solidly dark brown hair and a goatee, was not the type to scream and yell but he was the kind of man to take a person aside and issue them a soft but stern warning, which in this case meant wagging his finger and telling him to obey his mother’s wishes.
It was a dynamic that had been going on for four years now going on five. Ever since the disappearance of his older brother both parents took a turn for the worse in their behavior and attitude not only towards him but each other. As opposed to long dinner conversations, the family tended to eat in silence, where long walks in the backyard meadow were once common, David was forbidden from venturing even twenty feet outside the house, where affection and love once dwelled was now replaced by tension and distance.
His parents thought him naïve but the thirteen year old wasn’t stupid. One didn’t need to be a full grown adult to see how fragile things had become. To make matters even worse, all of this tension was redirected back on him. Both of his parents worked, his mother at the tea shop in London, his father in the Office of International Cooperation as the envoy to the United States, but when not occupied with these tasks they focused on him. And the summer of 1986 was filled with reminders about the upcoming year and what he was not to do.
If it wasn’t for his grandfather, Thomas Grant, he might have gone crazy.
“Mum and Dad aren’t happy, Grandad. They don’t do much really. Except feed me and occasionally yell.”
The slender, graying haired man gave a sad chuckle as pulled his grandson close to him.
“They’re going through a rough time now, David. Given the circumstances.”
“But I’m not like Jacob. I didn’t purposefully try to get involved in that vault stuff. It just…sucked me in.”
“I’m willing to bet Jake had a similar story,” Thomas laughed, deep and true. His sense of humor was well known among his family and peers.
“Grandad, I’m serious,” David responded though he couldn’t resist a smile himself. “They’re suffocating. How am I supposed to do anything with them always on my back?”
“There’s always Hogwarts,” came the witty response. When his grandson didn’t laugh this time around, the patriarch of the Grant family turned serious, cupping a finger underneath David’s chin.
“David don’t judge your parents too harshly. Just remember that you aren’t the only one who misses Jake. There must be sufficient time to heal. And when that happens, things will turn around. In the meantime, keep your head up and your ear to the ground.”
The young teenager nodded, knowing that if there was anyone he could trust, it was his grandfather, who often spoke plainly about topics such as these.
“I will.”
“There’s a good lad. Now let’s enjoy more of this summer sunshine shall we, David?”
“David?”
The sound of his mother’s voice brought him back to earth.
“David, are you listening?”
Snapping out of the flashback he quickly replied, “Yes mum.”
“You didn’t promise me,” she warned him as they sat at the table eating breakfast. She had made eggs, sausage, and picked an assortment of fruits but on the eve of going back to school, there was one more lecture to be had.
“Promise that I won’t try to touch the giant squid? Yeah, sure, I can promise that.”
But his attempt at humor was mitigated by a stern look from his father, looking down from his Saturday paper.
“We do not need our second son engaging in this dangerous cursebreaking business,” Heather Grant repeated for the umpteenth time. “It leads to nowhere good. Especially with Jacob gone. Please promise me you will not attempt to find more of these cursed vaults.”
“You’re mother is right, son,” the soft voice of his father echoed. “Your job is to further your education at Hogwarts, make some friends, and meet a few girls along the way,” he added with an uptwitch of his mouth.
“This is a time for you to learn and grow. Not put yourself in needless danger. Listen to your teachers. Listen to Dumbledore. Pay no attention to whatever temptations these vaults might have for you.”
If you had bothered to pay attention to my side of it, you’d remember I don’t CARE what’s inside of the vaults, David thought bitterly. I’m trying to find Jacob so we can be a family again. So YOU don’t have to cry every week about losing your son
In the end, the young teen held his tongue, buried his feelings as he always did on the subject and did as he was told. If it would save his mother that much grief to tell her what she wanted to hear, so be it.
“I promise I will, mum. Cross my heart and swear to die.”
“David!”
“Kidding.”
He was enveloped in an enormous hug, almost causing him to choke on his food.
“We love you, sweetie. Always remember that.”
Even as he acknowledged her words and reciprocated that love, David couldn’t help but feel bitter.
“I love you too.”
In a summary, this was why he hated the summer holidays. Hogwarts couldn’t come soon enough.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The arrival at King’s Crossing couldn’t come soon enough. Using an old Chevrolet that his grandfather collected on his travels in the United States and later passed down to his son, they drove to London on a lovely September day. For David, however, he was just looking forward to getting away from his mother’s smothering influence. Unfortunately, he couldn't get away from her without one last embarrassing hug and kiss on the forehead.
“Stay safe,” she said, as a few sixth years passed by and snickered. David would have hexed them right then and there were his arms not constricted and his wand in his back jeans pocket. “And remember…”
“I know, mum. No cursed vaults.”
“He understands, Heather,” his father spoke up, in a rare moment of support. He also hugged his son and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Be well, David. You know we’re always an owl away if you need us.”
“Thanks, Dad.”
With a last wave and a goodbye, the train whistled, and David hopped on. A sadness permeated through his heart as he looked out of the window one last time at his parents. Their faces were neutral, even distant as they turned and walked away, not even bothering to hold hands or give any sign of affection.
Sighing, the now third year Gryffindor wondered if things would ever return to normal in his family and what it would take to mend the wounds inflicted. In his heart, he already knew the answer. The problem was his parents had already forbidden it.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
It didn’t take long for him to find Rowan and grab a compartment. They were later joined by Charlie and Ben as well as Penny, who decided to spend her train ride with the Gryffindor boys this year.
“It’s great to see you again, David!” the pretty blonde greeted him with her usual hug. She did the same with the rest of the crew, causing Ben and Charlie to blush. “How was your summer?”
“Not good,” came the monotone, blunt response. “Unless you count not being allowed twenty feet outside of the house trapped with overbearing parents to be fun.”
Ben hesitated as he tried to formulate the words.
“Did your mum and dad…you know…”
“Find out about the cursed vault? Yes. And I have the Daily Prophet to thank for that. My parents saw the article and they put two and two together. So they know everything and made me promise a million times I would stop associating myself with the vaults.”
“Sounds rough, mate,” Charlie spoke sympathetically. “My mum saw it too but after I told her everything, she was very understanding.”
“Goddamn it, Charlie you told her what we got up to?”
David hadn’t meant to sound upset, but the last thing he needed was for his friends’ parents to think he was an obsessed nutcase as well.
“Dave, give me more credit than that,” the second eldest Weasley said raising his hands in the air. “I didn’t give her any specific details, just the gist. When Bill told her it was because you were trying to find your brother she immediately melted. I think she’s definitely going to send you a sweater this year.”
Not knowing what a sweater had to do with anything, David nevertheless relented.
“Sorry, Charlie. Didn’t mean to bite your head off. Things are just….tense at home. I’m very glad to be going back to Hogwarts.”
“Hey if anyone understands it’s me and Bill,” Charlie chuckled. “There are seven Weasley children in our humble abode. Family disputes are quite common.”
“Speaking of which, where is the lanky tosser?” David smiled. “He usually joins us by now.”
“Funny you should mention that. He’s out fulfilling his new prefect duties. Got the letter just last month. He’s getting himself acquainted in a fancy compartment as we speak.”
“He’s going to make an excellent prefect,” Rowan blurted out excitedly. “The best ever!”
“I suppose he won’t be able to help us out with the vaults anymore given his new position,” Ben suggested sadly. “Prefects enforce the rules, not break them.”
“Don’t be so sure,” Charlie said while munching through a sandwich. “Bill isn’t above breaking a few rules when it suits him. He’s a leader not a tattle tale.”
“That reminds me,” Penny perked up. “Have you given any thought to the broken wand and the book you found?”
That was an interesting question. David had not told his parents about the treasures that lay within the vault and locked them in his trunk to prevent them from being discovered. As to their true purpose, that was still anyone’s guess.
“Of course, I have. They’ve been stored away ever since I found them. But I can’t figure out what they’re for.”
“I wish I had been able to come with you into the vault,” Rowan lamented. “If I had, maybe we would have been able to translate more of that ancient Aramaic on the column. I’ve been doing a lot of research over the summer and I have some theories…”
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it,” David assured him. “I’m just not sure we have much to go off of right now.”
“What about Merula?”
He leaned back in his compartment seat, as though wholly unconcerned.
“What about her?”
“You know she’s going to want revenge since you got to the vault before her last year. Not to mention the failed bubotuber prank she tried to pull.”
“Oh yeah, that was funny. Remind me to send her a biting tea cup for her birthday this year.”
“David.”
Rowan’s serious tone forced him to give a serious answer, even though his mind couldn’t be farther from his Slytherin rival.
“She’s going to try and provoke me like she usually does. It’s the best we can hope for. She doesn’t know a damn thing about the vaults and as long as we keep it that way, Merula Snyde won’t be anything more than a minor nuisance in potions class.”
“No offense, David,” Penny warned. “But Merula’s a lot cleverer than you give her credit for. She’s mean, but she isn’t stupid. If any wind of the next vault gets to the Slytherins, she’s going to be the first to jump on it.”
Bollocks, she’s right
David didn’t like to give any credence to any Slytherin, much less Merula but he had to acknowledge that the blonde Hufflepuff brought up a good point. She was not one to give up easily or at all and would not fail to brag about any progress with the vaults or information regarding his brother. He had not taken her up on that offer the previous year but if the flow of intel ran dry, might he have to make a deal with her?
No, never. Merula can piss up a tree for all I care
“I understand your concern, guys. But there’s not a whole lot we can do right now. I don’t even know if I can go after the next vault.
“Can’t? Or won’t?” Ben challenged to his surprise. “Since when does David Grant let rules stop him?”
David didn’t respond, instead choosing to close his eyes and take a small nap before arriving at Hogwarts. Those were questions he preferred not to answer at the moment.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
The rest of the train ride was relatively quiet. Penny had to wake up David and Charlie from their respective naps (Charlie also had a habit of snoring) to put on their robes but that aside, it was a peaceful trip without any hijinx.
Heading up to the massive castle was now a familiar routine. The familiar call of ‘Firs’ years’ could be heard above the chatter of the thousand strong student body as he waved a friendly hello to Hagrid who greeted him back. Invisible carriages carried them and their luggage up to the front hall where Peeves was waiting with an assortment of fanged frisbees and had to be cleared away by Professor McGonagall. Yes, being a third year did have one gigantic perk: routine. Being thirteen meant you were no longer a little kid and people showed you a modicum of respect.
They weren’t the only ones moving up in the world. As the respective houses gathered at their tables in the Great Hall, David spotted a familiar long haired, tall red headed Weasley sporting an impressive red and gold badge. It didn’t take long for them to embrace.
“Bill Weasley, you wanker. Can’t make time for us on the train anymore?”
Bill grinned in response.
“For you lot? As if.”
“Seriously, though. Congratulations on becoming prefect. I know you really wanted it last year.”
“Thanks, David,” the eldest Weasley thanked. “Mum practically died of joy when I got the letter. Really, I’m just glad Dumbledore believed I earned it.”
“Just don’t let it get to your head,” Charlie teased him as the group took their seats besides and across from one another. His brother rolled his eyes.
“You know me better than that. Percy on the other hand, God forbid he ever becomes a prefect…”
“Who’s Percy?” Rowan asked, clearly not aware of the numerous siblings the family possessed.
“He’s our younger brother,” Charlie explained. “Younger than Bill and I, but older than Fred, George, Ron, and Ginny. He’s a bit of a wet blanket.”
“He comes to Hogwarts next year. You’ll understand when you meet him,” Bill said, his smile becoming more of a grimace. “By the way, I wanted to ask you sooner, but I couldn’t get away from the prefect training. Did you find any clue or hint about the next vault?”
“Don’t know anything more than you do, I’m afraid,” David said, shaking his head.
“You’re still interested in the vaults even though you’re a prefect?” Rowan asked Bill.
“Hey, just because I’m a prefect doesn’t mean I’ve lost my appetite for curse breaking. I just have to be more…discreet about it from now on.”
Charlie grinned at the rest of his friends as a way to say ‘I told you so’. Ben looked mildly surprised while Rowan was positively aglow with admiration.
“Do you think Dumbledore is going to punish us for investigating the vaults?” the sandy haired third year asked aloud.
David shrugged. “I don’t think so. He asked me to stay away from them, but he wasn’t upset.”
“No way that he could be. You saved the entire school from being turned into a frozen wasteland,” Rowan pointed out.
But before anyone could say anything more, the enormous oak doors burst open as Professor McGonagall entered the room with this year’s batch of first years in tow. The older students immediately quieted down as the protocol and procedure for the sorting began. Time for chatter on the vaults would have to come later.
In another instance of the inconsistency of time passing, David observed that the sorting always took longer when you were on the outside looking in as opposed to when you were the one being sorted. The hat’s song was entertaining enough as it always was, but just how many first years had last names beginning with the letter ‘D’? He was also quite hungry as evidenced by his stomach growling. The feast couldn’t come soon enough.
Finally, after what seemed like hours, the sorting ended, and Dumbledore took center stage.
“Welcome back to Hogwarts!” the white bearded warlock boomed happily. “I’m pleased to have all of you new and returning students here for another year of magical learning and self discovery. To those returning pupils with empty bellies, I apologize for making you suffer through another one of my speeches, but I must address certain concerns before we dig into our sumptuous feast.”
David could have sworn the old man’s eyes twinkled at the sound of the groaning from the student body.
“First, as a reminder: The Forbidden Forest is strictly out of bounds to all students regardless of year. Our caretaker, Mr. Filch, has also pressed me to tell you that the list of banned items at Hogwarts has increased to one hundred and fifty seven. A full list can be viewed on his office door. As always, Madam Hooch will announce the dates of coming Quidditch tryouts for your respective house teams.
“I would be remiss, however, if I did not mention the Erumpent in the room. As many of you know, last year, Hogwarts was afflicted with cursed ice caused by one of the long rumored cursed vaults. The curse was released as a result of an outside entity tampering with them. Therefore, I am ordering everyone in this room to stay away from the rest. It is said that each vault unleashes a unique curse and I will not have my students and faculty endangered again. And while it is true that some of our students broke the vault curse and saved the school, it is also true they put themselves and others at great risk by doing so. As such, I am forbidding any student from seeking out the remaining ones. The penalty will be severe, especially for repeat offenders.
“But do not let my warning damper your spirits. Please, enjoy the feast and rest well for your classes tomorrow.”
Dumbledore clapped his hands twice and the usual assortment of foodstuffs and goodies appeared in front of them. But his warning did take away some of David’s appetite and Ben was the first to address the comments as the feast commenced.
“So much for Dumbledore not being upset…”
“Do you think he knows we were all involved? Are we going to get detention?” Rowan said in a panicked whisper.
“Relax, both of you,” Bill lightly chided. “If any of us were getting detention we’d know by now. We just have to decide what to do moving forward. David, what do you think?”
That was the problem, however. He had no idea where to go from here. On the one hand, listening to Dumbledore and his parents did seem to be the wisest course. There was a lot to consider- his schooling, his reputation, not to mention the possibility of having his wand snapped by the Ministry. But deep within the pits of the fun and witty David Grant was a hole that he never let anyone see, not even his own parents. The hole that symbolized the loss of his brother and the burning desire to find him again. He didn’t want to disobey the headmaster or mum and dad, but how could he sit idly by with newfound information on Jacob and not act on it.
“Let’s heed Dumbledore for now,” came the muted response. “I need to think on this.”
Rowan and Ben looked at each other as if unsure what to make of the situation but they didn’t press the issue. Bill nodded, his perception much more adept than the third years also said nothing but nevertheless kept his good cheer.
“Hey David…catch.”
The turkey leg thrown at his plate nearly caused him to jump ten feet in the air, as memories of Merula and bubotuber pus came to the forefront of his mind.
“Wanker,” David laughed as Charlie snickered and Bill winked.
The rest of the evening was much more pleasant as they ate to their hearts content, joked around, discussed their holidays, classes, Quidditch, and various topics. As they were dismissed from the Great Hall and made their way up to bed (Bill had to lead the first years on their annual tour) Jae, ever the smuggler that he was, presented them with a new kind of sweet that Filch had failed to ban: Animal Augments. Basically, they gave one the temporary ability to sound like a random wild animal. Ben’s lion roar woke up the fourth years in the next dorm and David nearly pissed himself laughing at Rowan getting the donkey themed one. As Jae put it- “galleons well spent.” These were the moments that made Hogwarts worthwhile.
Cursed Vaults or not, it was good to be back.
Silence takes over the classroom and you smile as you look over at your classmates sitting in front of you, waiting patiently for you to explain why you asked to shut up.
You’re thankful that it’s your birthday since you can use it as an excuse and they have no other choice but to accept it, especially Wooyoung, who’s sitting in the back with his arms crossed over his chest, looking forward to any reason to interrupt your speech once you’ve opened your mouth.
“So…” you start, clapping your hands. You aren’t nervous, though you’ve never asked for anything like this before. You’ve known these people for years and you’ve always had a good relationship with them. “As you know, it’s my birthday---“
“Happy birthday to---“
“Shut up,” you look at Wooyoung who holds in a laugh while lowering his head as San hits him on his nape. “Thank you,” you say. San salutes as if you were a sergeant. “Like a said,” all eyes back on you. “It’s my birthday, and I want to do something special,” you stop, gathering your thoughts. You have to hurry up before the professor arrives. “I never told anyone, but I’m a big fan of letters,” you confess. The faces of your classmates start to change as they realize where you’re going with this. You notice Mingi sitting straight on the opposite corner of the room, he’d been playing with a pen between his fingers since the beginning but he stopped as soon as he heard your confession. Now, you feel the palms of your hands sweaty. However, you ignore it and go on, “I want you to write me a letter,” you say, the same way a professor gives homework at the end of the class.
“A letter?” Wooyoung asks with the voice that reminds you of the hyenas from The Lion King. You try to keep a straight face. Wooyoung can indeed drive anyone insane but he’s still a ray of sunshine. “I’m out,” he adds, shaking his head and resting his back against the wall.
“You’re writing the letter,” San says.
“What am I supposed to write?” Wooyoung points out. “If I wanted to tell you something then I’d say it to your face,” he looks at you and you open your mouth ready to replicate when San takes over again.
“Shut up,” he says. San takes his pen and puts it on Wooyoung’s desk. “If Y/N wants a letter, then you’re writing Y/N a letter.”
“But---“ Wooyoung shrieks.
“Wooyoung,” you interrupt, approaching his desk, fed up with his tantrum. “Write me a letter. Be a good friend for once and write me a letter.”
“I AM A GOOD FRIEND!” he stands up, clearly offended by your statement. Again, you try to hold in a laugh. You catch San looking away, hiding a smile.
“Then be a better one,” you reply and Wooyoung sighs. “You have time until the end of class,” you add when you realize you’ve won the argument and that the professor must be about to show up.
You go to your sit in front of San’s desk, giving him a smile before sitting down. Though Mingi’s desk is behind you, you can see him from the corner of your eye that he’s already started writing and your heart takes a leap.
You’re indeed a big fan of letters and you cherish every single one you’ve received over your life even those from people you haven’t been in touch in years. There’s something special in the way a feeling can be encapsulated in a piece of paper and live forever in it even if time changes. And the thought of finding out what Mingi’s writing makes your hands sweat and your heartbeat rush. You can’t believe that you’re about to receive a letter from the guy you’ve had a crush on for over a year. Therefore, when the professor walks in and he starts talking, you don’t listen to one word, too busy daydreaming about what that letter will contain.
You let out a breath of relief when the alarm rings. You’ve been looking at the clock above the board for so long your sight becomes fuzzy when you start putting away the books.
“Don’t forget to do your homework!” the professor screams above the mess that everyone’s causing by moving the chairs and talking to each other
When you look back up, you see various pieces of paper on your desk and you’re actually surprised that they listened to you. Is that how the professor feels every time he gives homework and students actually do it? Wow.
You shake your head and turn your head back. Mingi’s still putting away his belongings but you notice a folded piece of paper on his desk and you catch your breath. He did write you a letter.
“Here,” you turn back at Wooyoung who’s left the letter under your nose. “I hope you’re happy. You made me write three goddamn paragraphs,” he adds acting mad.
“Three paragraphs?” you ask as though you can’t believe your ears. “Wow, you must really love me.”
“Ha,” Wooyoung smiles despite his attempts to keep a straight face. “You should be thankful that---“
“Hey, Mingi,” San comes in, resting his arm on Wooyoung’s shoulder while looking behind you. You feel the air around you dense as you turn to see Mingi standing next to your desk, his bag on his back, and the letter on his hand. He was ready to drop it until San interrupted him.
“Hey,” Mingi says in a deep voice with a tiny smile on his face. He looks at you and your world stops for a second as he holds up the letter and leaves it on your desk. “Happy birthday,” he whispers before turning around and walking away. The classroom is almost empty.
“Close your mouth, dumbass,” Wooyoung says.
You didn’t even realize your mouth was open until Wooyoung pointed it out.
“He did write you a letter. I’m surprised,” San comments.
The letter lay folded in front of you and you have to fight every fiber in your body to not reach it and read it right here.
“What are you waiting for?” Wooyoung asks. “Read it.”
“I’m not reading it in front of you,” you replied when you realized that San was as keen on finding out what was written on the letter as Wooyoung.
“Why?” Wooyoung shrugs and tries to keep calm. “Do you think he wrote you a love letter?”
“Well---“ San whispers. “He’s good with words.”
“But he’s shy,” Wooyoung replies. “There’s no way he’s confessing on a letter.”
“I think it’s possible,” San says.
“Uhm---“ you interrupt, catching their attention. “Did I miss the part where I asked for your opinion?” though your voice sounds confident, you can’t ignore the pain on your stomach just by the thought of what Mingi could’ve written.
“We’re his friends, you know that, don’t you?” Wooyoung points out.
“You’re not his friend,” you retort. “You’re my friend and his classmate.”
“Stop,” San comes in with his hands up as Wooyoung was about to reply. “It’s true. We aren’t close to him,” he goes on. “So, whatever’s written on that paper, I hope it makes your day,” he says sincerely.
You smile. San has always been the type of person to add tenderness to every situation and just like that, your nervousness ceases and you look over at the letter, looking forward to finding out. You take it, ready to open it when San and Wooyoung walk away without saying a word. They close the door and you’re left alone inside the silenced classroom.
You take a deep breath, your heart starts beating so fast it may jump out of your chest. You open the letter.
“Dear Y/N,
I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to tell you this, but I know that if I don’t take advantage of this then I will never have the courage to tell you that I like you. I’ve liked you for a while.
Happy birthday!
-         Mingi”
The moment your eyes lay on those three words you stand up, take your bag and leave the classroom empty with the rest of the letters.
“Hey! HEY!” you scream at Wooyoung and San who stop dead when they see you running towards them like a freak.
“What?” San asks, worried.
“What did he write?” Wooyoung asks right after San while you gain your ability to breathe again. His eyes fixed on the letter in your hand.
“Where is he?” you inquire, ignoring Wooyoung’s inquisitive face.
“Who? Mingi?” You’re thankful that San’s the one speaking. He’s the one closer to Mingi. “I don’t know.”
“Well, call him,” Wooyoung says as though it wasn’t the obvious choice.
San sighs.
“I don’t have my phone, remember?” He looks over at you. “He might be at the park but I’m not---“
The words get lost in the wind as you pass them running. The park is not far from the school but it is getting late and you should be back home before your mom starts wondering where the hell are you when she’s asked you explicitly you get back home after school because your relatives would be there to celebrate your birthday.
You rest your hands on your knees, breathing deeply when you arrive at the park which isn’t empty. It’s a nice day. Spring is near. Therefore, the trees are coming back to life with green leaves, the sky’s bright blue, and people would rather take a walk and enjoy the day instead of staying at home.
You start walking, looking around. You see a family with their kid, a couple, a group of friends wearing your school’s uniform but no sign of Mingi.
As you’re about to give up and return home before your phone starts ringing, you see a group of three people standing near the skate zone. There are many around, talking loudly, laughing, and skating but you focus on the three who’ve caught your attention.
It’s not hard to distinguish Mingi, the tallest between the other two guys who are also wearing your school’s uniform but you’ve never seen them.
Even though you aren’t the type to feel intimidated by strangers, the thought of approaching that group next to so many people who must know each other makes your stomach twirl.
You can still talk to Mingi tomorrow at school or ask San for his number. Maybe it’s for the best. In fact, you don’t have anything ready to say so what’s the point? You turn around.
“Hey! Y/N!”
You stop dead when you hear Mingi’s voice calling you. It’s so clear that you feel shivers all over your body. It takes you a moment to force your body to turn back to see Mingi whispering something to his friends before walking towards you.
Is he approaching you? Or are you dreaming?
He stops and his eyes focus on the letter hanging on your hand, you’ve forgotten it was there. Mingi scratches the back of his neck, a shy smile on his face and suddenly, the people behind him have disappeared.
“I guess you’ve read it?” he says in a low voice. He wrinkles his nose as though he’s too ashamed of what he’s done.
“Uhm---“ you fight to find the words. You’ve never imagined something like this could happen. “Yeah, I did,” you add as your eyes lay on the friends Mingi’s left behind. Their attention focused on you two. Mingi follows your gaze and his friends look away instantly.
Mingi sighs.
“C’mon,” he murmurs, resting a hand on your shoulder to make you turn around. It burns where his hand has been.
You two walk silently, which gives you time to think about the fact that you’re alone with the person you’ve had a crush on for so long after he’s confessed that he likes you, too. It feels like a dream.
Mingi stops and sits down in front of the tree. You two are now on the top on a small hill which gives you a panoramic look over the lake. Families are enjoying the day, little kids feeding the ducks.
“I wasn’t sure you were going to read it,” he whispers as though he’s too afraid to interrupt your thoughts.
You look at him. His back rests against the tree and his bag between his legs.
“It was your letter that interested me the most,” you confess without a clue about where you’ve gathered the strength to reveal something like this. You lower your gaze at the surprised look on Mingi’s face. The sun doesn’t hit directly on him but it’s still enough to appreciate his moles. “I liked you since last year,” you go on. It’s now or never.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he asks, genuinely.
“I didn’t know if you liked me,” you reply and realize how stupid you sound but the sweet laugh that Mingi lets out, makes you feel much more comfortable.
“I didn’t know if you liked me, either,” he points out and you smile.
“You should be thankful I’m obsessed with letters,” you joke.
Mingi acts shocked.
“Are you for real? I thought it was a move to make me confess.”
You shake your head, feeling weird but at ease at the same time. You take off your bag and set it on the ground to rest your back against the tree next to Mingi. It feels so right.
“I’m smart,” you whisper. “But not that smart,” you joke, and Mingi laughs, looking at you. You catch your breath as he looks back down after taking a few seconds. Mingi's fingers intertwine with yours. His hand is soft and kind.
“I think you’re smart,” he says.
“Now you’ll be complimenting me at every chance you get?”
He smiles and it makes your heart melt when your eyes meet. You can feel Mingi’s thumb caressing your skin you absent-mindedly; it’s as if he’s done it thousands of times before. You know your phone is about to ring but you ignore reality. You’d rather enjoy every second of it before it’s time to go.
“Is that a bad thing?” Mingi asks, this time the tone has shifted.
You smirk. After all, it’s your birthday.
chapters 1 2 3
next chapter
goldie belongs to sleepy-lion-king. i finally finished this story after a lotttt of thinking about them and their story.
also read this on ao3!
--------
"Kio, can you pass me the manual?"
Noki, not taking his eyes off his work, held his hand out towards his brother.
“Pino is using it, he’s in his room.” the younger brother responded. Kio was at the corner of their workshop, fumbling with his hand held gun.
Noki frowned and continued working. He took the pliers and cut one of the wires. “58th trial…” he mumbled, grabbing the remote. He pushed the button and the small machine began working, traveling across the floor on its own. Kio noticed this and looked up from his work,
“Hey, good job. It finally worked,” he said. Kio knew that Noki had been working on the same contraption nearly a week now, that’s way longer than the average time.
Noki frowned and shook his head. “No, it’s not supposed to be going that fast.”
He stood up and walked over to pick it up, turning it over to adjust it. “I really do need the manual,” he muttered. He placed the contraption on his table before walking over to the small door and opening it.
Now in the quiet palace halls, he took a sharp left and quickly made his way up the staircase, skipping a step or two to make things faster. After climbing one floor, he took another turn and stopped at the first of seven doors. He knocked a couple of times,
“Pino? I need the manual for the-”
The door opened to Gretel poking her head out, “Oh hey, sorry he’s not here now. Do you need to get something?” she opened the door wider as an invitation to enter. Noki shook his head,
“No, it’s alright. Thank you.”
Before he was about to leave Gretel stopped him, “Wait,” Noki turned around, “You seem a little pale, is everything alright?” she asked him. He paused for a bit then nodded,
“I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?” she asked once more.
Now a bit annoyed, he creased his eyebrows and sighed, “Yes, Gretel. I’m fine.” he told her, “Can you tell me where Pino is?”
“I’m not sure,” she looked back in their room, “he left just recently though so he shouldn’t have gone too fa-” when Gretel looked back Noki was already down the staircase, determined to just get this over with so he could return back to his work.
After minutes of wandering the palace, he gave up and decided to just get back to work. His irritation only grew once he saw Pino there the whole time with the manual. “Seriously…” he mumbled. As his anger started rising he started taking note of other things. He took a look at the workshop and saw it was a mess. Kio.
“Hey, I was looking for you.” Gretel came in, “Pino’s right there, woah are you sure you’re alright?” she asked.
“Yeah, you don’t look too well.” Pino stood up.
“Would you guys stop being on me all the time?!” he yelled.
Yelled for the first time. The other three, especially his brothers, were visibly shocked. In all of their twenty years together they had never had a full blown argument. All of them were always on the same page whenever an issue was brought up, and if ever they disagreed it was always a minor problem and it could be fixed easily. This had never happened before.
“I mean honestly, I had to walk around this entire palace just to look for a book, only to find out it was here the whole time. And my god, Kio, would it kill you to not leave your stuff all over the workshop? And you!” Noki whipped his head to Gretel, who looked visibly concerned.
“Stop asking if I’m alright every time I express a damn emotion. I’m not your brother so just go bother him instead.” he spat out.
Pino frowned at this and stepped forward, “Noki, that’s enou-”
“Oh don’t even get me started on you! You’re always with her now and you never have time for us anymore!”
“Noki, you know that’s not true.” Pino firmly told him.
“Right. Because you’re always correct cause you’re the eldest.” things that weren’t even related to the problem just started spilling out of his lips, as if twenty years of pent up anger was finally being released, “Papa always gave the responsibility of the workshop to you, and he gave the most attention to Kio because he was the youngest; meanwhile, I’m here trying my best and nothing seems to be working no matter what I do!” he slammed his fist on his table.
No one spoke and Noki stopped, slightly panting from exhaustion. He took one look at their faces and that’s when it hit him. All of their faces shocked, concerned, and confused. The guilt and embarrassment slowly started to creep upon him as he suddenly became scared. Unable to look at them anymore, he ran past them and went out the back entrance of the workshop. Not looking back, not looking forward, he just ran.
He could faintly hear voices calling out his name from behind, but they soon became deaf to his ears as he fled farther and farther from the palace. He was embarrassed nonetheless; tears started forming at the edge of his eyes as he replayed the words he said to his brothers. He was angry at himself, his work, but he didn’t want to be angry with them.
‘Why was I so stupid. Why am I like this? Why do I always feel like this when I-’
“Hey! Woah!”
He first fell down on the grass as he bumped into something. Rubbing his head he opened his eyes to see chopped wood everywhere on the ground, little farther ahead was a person, flat on the ground with their arms spread out. Noki got up and immediately made his way to them.
“I’m so sorry. Are you okay?” he asked, worried for their wellbeing. He hadn’t noticed where he was going.
The person scrunched their face as their eyes opened, slowly adjusting to the dim light. Noki looked at their features and saw that she was a woman. “Mmrgm...who..” she looked to her right and saw a little green dwarf looking down at her.
“Who?!” she immediately sat up in shock and Noki moved back in surprise. Which was a bad idea given that it only hurt her head even more. “Oww…” she groaned, her hand rubbing the back of her short, messy, yellow hair.
“Are...you okay?” Noki asked once more. “I’m sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going. Is your head alright?”
“No..no yeah I’m fine. This happens a lot,” she said. Her face winced a bit as she touched her forehead, a small bruise forming there. “How about you?” she turned to him.
“I’m fine,” he told her, “Please, let me pick your stuff up for you.” Noki got up and started picking up the individual logs of wood. The girl looked at him for a bit then started picking up logs as well. “Are you headed anywhere? Let me help you carry this there. It’s the least I can do.” he offered. Dwarf or Human, his qualities that made him a member of F7 still remained.
“That’d be really nice. Thanks!” she beamed and stood up, “I’m headed to a cabin nearby. It’s a bit of a walk but we should be there in a bit.” Noki couldn’t help but question her sudden change in attitude as he looked at her, eagerly picking up the logs as she hummed.
‘Strange..’ he mumbled in his head.
As the two of them walked the woman began making conversation, “So what are you doing out here?” she asked. As much as he wanted to be polite, he really felt like it was none of her business.
“That’s not important.”
“Sure it is,” she said, “oh c’mon you can tell me. I promise I won’t tell anyone!” she grinned.
Noki only frowned at her, ‘That’s not really the issue…’ he thought. “What about you? What’s a girl like you doing out in the woods? It’s getting late.” he asked, changing the subject.
“I was chopping wood here for tonight. It gets pretty cold and I kind of forgot to do it this morning,” she said. The woman began talking about something else, but Noki unconsciously began tuning her out as he thought about what happened almost an hour ago. The depression was starting to take over his mind as he looked at the grass. He wondered if he could just invent a time machine so that he could go back and this wouldn’t have happened.
If only…
“Hey!”
Noki looked up from the ground and saw a ray of sunshine. Or...at least that’s what it looked like for a split second as his chest felt warm. The woman's face was only a good few inches away from him as she crouched down to his level, he couldn’t help but stare at her bright blonde hair and sapphire eyes before he realized he was indeed starting.
“Oh, sorry!” he said immediately, “Did you say something?”
The woman shrugged, “You were so quiet when I told my joke, I thought something was wrong with your head. Turns out you were just spaced out.” she giggled as she poked the side of his head.
Noki grew red a bit as he stepped back and shook his head, “Sorry. Are we close?” he asked her.
She stood back up and gestured ahead. A cute little cabin just a few meters ahead. Small enough for just one person but big enough just to have guests over. It almost reminded him of his old workshop with his family.
“Over here,” she called him as she walked ahead. Noki followed her to a smaller storage as she opened the door, throwing the logs inside and keeping just a few with her. She closed the door with her foot as she walked back to the entrance.
“Well, thanks for your help. I really appreciate it!” she grabbed the rest of the logs from him, “I’m Goldie by the way.” she managed to reach her hand out to him. Noki looked at her smile, having a quick internal debate on which fake name to tell her, as he didn’t want word out that he was here. Instead, for some strange reason, he told her the truth.
“Noki.” he reached out his hand and shook hers.
“If you want,” she told him, “You can stay here for the night. It’s getting pretty late and I doubt you’d wanna be out there alone.” she offered. Noki only shook his head,
“That’s alright. I wouldn’t want to intrude. Have a goodnight, milady.” he bowed.
Goldie stayed there and raised an eyebrow as he walked away. As Noki reached the entrance to the woods again, he then realized. Where on earth was he going? He had nowhere to go. He couldn’t take back what he said to them. He couldn’t possibly return now. Even if he did decide to go back, where was he? He didn’t look where he was going when he ran off, who knows how far away from home he is. He didn’t have resources to camp out as well.
His only option was…
Noki turned his head back slightly, “Goldie..?” he called out in a weak voice.
“Still here.” she smiled knowingly.
“I changed my mind suddenly...I think I’ll take up your offer,” he said, averting his gaze.
Goldie kicked the door open by lifting her leg up, “Why don’t you start the fire and I’ll get the food ready.” she beamed at him.
