Premise • 

Eleven years ago, guitarists Hale and Aleksandr learned that monsters were real. Hale lost his fiancé, and Aleksandr lost his brother. While their band was growing, their personal lives were spiralling. Hale’s rampant alcoholism nearly cost them both their lives. When six years of trauma led to Aleksandr’s attempted death by suicide, Hale made a bargain with the gods to save his best friend’s life.

To the rest of the world, they’ve moved on. Emperor Immortal is stronger than ever. Aleksandr is happily married. Hale has been dating Sterling, the bassist of his side band for three years now.

But things are far more complicated than they appear.

The dead are rising. 

The gods are angry. 

And aren’t even Hale’s biggest problem.

I have a theory

listen up bitches (gender neutral) (affectionate) i’ve been cooking this for an incredibly long time and i’m very very excited to share it but it is gonna be long so i’m putting it under a cut

my theory is that there has been a new set of archetypes created by popular m/m media either in canon or coding and i would love if it was more widely recognized by a distinct name so here we go:

I present to you: The Mirrorball x Running Up That Hill Boyfriends™️ Theory

i need to preface this by saying that i am absolutely not an english major or expert but i have done so much analysis that i’m 98% positive i’m on to something here

so usually mlm ships- at least in my experience- get boiled down into typical Grumpy x Sunshine, Golden Retriever x Black Cat, or like. Babygirl x Badass. and i hate that because those are like really watered down hetero romance stereotypes and i think queer people deserve to get our own archetypes instead of trying to force queer characters into prepaid boxes but that’s a story for another day so:

basically, all content with widely accepted mlm ships (even if they are more in coding than in canon) has this pattern with the ship that fits into Mirrorball x Running Up That Hill

(name pending- open to suggestions)

Boyfriend No.1 of course is the epitome of Mirrorball by Taylor Swift (i know, i know. bear with me here). He’s constantly trying to prove himself and his worth and usually he’s driven to hide or overcome 1-3 specific and intense insecurities/character flaws. He often has innate loyalty to a system or person who has repeatedly abused/neglected/abandoned him and thinks that this treatment is a result of his own character rather than a reflection of the abuser. In relation to the plot and audience, this is the “more dangerous” of the two because he’s so desperate to hold onto the status quo that he’ll often act in a way that makes things more difficult for himself, often by leaving Boyfriend No. 2, sacrificing himself, or doing “the wrong thing.” He also commonly has an older male figure that is breathing down his neck constantly, haunting his perceived inadequacies, and fueling his self-loathing. He’s constantly mischaracterized because he’s either boiled down to “the silly one” or a visage of his trauma and the people that relate to love these characters are usually extremely sad people. Usually this character is also the “mean girl” of the couple.

Examples of the Mirrorball boyfriend: Dean Winchester, Aziraphale, Stede Bonnet, Lucius Spriggs, Sherlock Holmes, Eddie Munson, Mike Wheeler, Prince Rupert, etc.

Boyfriend No. 2 then, is the Running Up That Hill Boyfriend, based of course, on the song by the same name by the perfect Kate Bush. He’s the one that’s seen The Horrors™️ and gained a layer of cynicism that Mirrorball doesn’t have. He was once loyal to something that used/hurt him but he rejected it and used his newfound freedom to restructure his entire personality and reach his much higher potential. Usually, he has passed so far from having a few insecurities to perceiving himself as utterly worthless and unlovable but he’s so convinced that it doesn’t even haunt him, he just goes with it and usually comes off looking overly-confident or cocky. This is The Bitch (affectionate)™️. There’s probably a scene of him covered in blood. This is The Girls’ favorite blorbo and ultimate whump. He tends to be really good with kids and he’s the kind of character that would and often has to CLAW a life out for himself by his fingernails.

Examples of the Running Up That Hill Boyfriend: Castiel, Crowley, Ed Teach, Black Pete, John Watson, Steve Harrington, Will Byers, Prince Amir, etc.

unfortunately i haven’t seen a lot of popular queer stuff so if you can think of other mlm or mlm shaped characters that fit into these archetypes please please please tell me

Okay so I’ve been thinking back on the two princes podcast by gimlet (it’s on Spotify, you should totally check it out) and looked up some stuff cus why not, and I saw a lot of wholesome fan art and jazz so I was super excited and then I noticed something.

Everyone makes Amir taller then Rupert.

Which, to be fair, is reasonable considering that’s how most people draw them. But if you look at the official art you notice that, aside from the third seasons cover, all of their pictures together have Rupert at an angle making him look like he’s shorter.

But if you look at the season three cover, where they stand side by side, Rupert is actually significantly taller than Amir.

While, yes, they are all different art styles, I like to this Rupert is a good inch and a half taller and he uses that to his advantage at any given moment because yes.

I’m looking way too much into this, I know, and yes I know this fandom and series are both kind of dead but I just wanted to share.

I hope there are other people who still enjoy going back and taking a listen to it because it was sooo good and very underrated.

If you haven’t listened yet I do recommend it, it’s really good if you’re looking for a queer and inclusive piece of media that is actually really good.

tbh, I agree very much with what that blog said -- amir talai said "him being aroace is not explicitly known" which is true. the word "aro" hasn't been said explicitly in the way "ace" has. it's been stated as word of god and discussed and hinted, but it's not been said BY any character/s (yet 👀👀👀)

I think a VA of the character saying "my way of reading things is if it's in the script it's explicit, and if it's not, it's not" makes a lot of sense. that being said, it's not to say it won't be made explicit down the line, in the way "ace in the hole" was a way of making the aceness a Statement That This Is The Character

amir talai strikes me as the kind of guy who's been consistently very deliberate in only discussing what's on the page about his character, so not wanting to discuss his being aroace until/if it's on the page is very fair -- with "ace in the hole" he did also speak about how that was a way of making something explicit, while still being true to the character not knowing the terminology or the identity. until that moment, "ace" was not explicit either

(I don't btw personally totally agree on reading characters this way, considering the long history of queercoding being that one Couldn't make something explicit + that's still a very deliberate method of writing show-don't-tell today, But that's coming from my side as someone who's well-versed in that history, rather than a "I am the random person voicing a character and I do what's on the page in front of me, because that is my job and I talk about what is on the page in front of me" -- but he's clearly also trying to learn, which is awesome)

also he DID do some learning/hyping on aro-identity during this week of aro awareness, so it's also nice that he definitely understands that ace and aro aren't interchangeable and is putting in that work to open his horizons on that front

I totally agree with what the post said. Alastor got 1000% confirmed as ace by that joke and personally I also think that it included him being aromantic. A lot of people still think that ace and aro go hand in hand the same way that they assume that (for example) bisexual and biromantic go hand in hand (which they don't but a lot of people think that) so maybe the writers are part of that group. Also, like the other blog said, Rosie said the "ace in the hole" joke in relation to him dating Charlie and it basically went "she's too young for you lololol jkjk ik you're ace" (which doesn't stop people from being in an alloromantic relationship, people just think aro and ace means the same thing) so I do think they included aro into that scene. However aro actually being in the script is only my own interpretation so I get it if people think otherwise.

I completely support your point about stating things explicitly and queer coding. I think Alastor is extremely aro-coded apart from the fact that his VA didn't actually un-confirm it - he just said that it's not explicitly in the script. Personally, it's super duper implied that Alastor is aromantic but again, I get it if people don't see it. So yeah, despite what anybody says, as long as Alastor isn't confirmed to be not-aromantic I'll headcanon him on the arospec

Also, even if Alastor turned out to be not-aro, I don't think anything would change because about 95% of this fandom doesn't give a shit about aros or aces and just continued erasing Alastors aroace identity that we thought he had at that point so yeah.

I really enjoyed Crying Wolf (after about one page of being a bit scared cause the words "prison" and "romance" used together can be really...not good in the hands of other people lol) so i'll be buying any book you were to publish. :D

Story time.

Perhaps also rant time.

I don't know. We'll see where this takes us.

For those that don't know, Crying Wolf is a novel I wrote that was published in 2021. It's about twin brothers who get sent to prison for a crime only one of them committed. They're also werewolves.

Now for the drama.

Crying Wolf is not a romance. At least, I never intended it to be a romance when I wrote it. It was inspired by the Australian TV show Wentworth (which is a prison drama) and me wanting to explore werewolves in a world where their existence is not secret.

But, peeling back another layer, it was really about me missing my sibling who I'd previously been very close to who suddenly moved to the other side of the planet, and processing some feelings I had about being in intimidating environments.

Ali's romance with Morgan was not nearly as explicit or important to the story in the first draft, and Amir's relationship with Ben was much more queer platonic.

But, I was told very unambiguously by several people, that I needed to increase the romantic elements. A lot of early readers felt the drama between the brothers wasn't enough to hold their interest.

Which is fair enough. I made the romances a bigger part of the story, but they still aren't the story. The story is still the brothers surviving a very dangerous environment while learning to let each other go.

It was, even then, still not a romance.

I never once tried to sell it to publishers as a romance. I always said it was a family drama. I distinctly remember making a point about this because I didn't want publishers to be disappointed.

But family dramas set in prisons which also happen to be full of werewolves isn't really a marketable category. Gay paranormal prison romance is.

I think this is was even more true back in 2018 when I signed Crying Wolf's publishing contract.

I noticed during the editing process that my editors really wanted to increase the romantic elements of the story even more, but that didn't really bother me. I don't think I 100% realised they intended to market it as a romance until later.

And I don't hate that. I guess I can see why they did it. And, with the edits, there is very much a romantic feel to it now. But, I still don't think it fits well within the category.

The literal climax of the story is about the brothers calling out to each other and giving each other strength from a distance, even if they can't be together in person. It's not about the kissing.

I don't know how readers feel, but that's how I feel. Especially considering how dark prison romances can be, I just don't think it fits the label.

Ultimately, Crying Wolf did not sell very well. Sure, there are a few hundred copies floating around out there, but it doesn't pay any bills. A part of that, I think, is it came out at a weird time in a weird market. COVID changed a lot of things. However, I also think some people picked it up thinking it was a dark romance and were disappointed... while others who may have liked it didn't buy it because they thought it was a dark romance.

Or maybe it just isn't the sort of thing a ton of people would be interested in. I dunno.

I still really like it. I think I did a good job writing it and reread parts of it from time to time. But, personally, for me, it isn't a romance.

It's about twin werewolf brothers being bad at emotions in a very fucked up situation.

Anyway, I'm really glad you enjoyed it, and would buy other things I publish. I hope you'll get that opportunity and I hope this sort of cleared up the marketing weirdness with Crying Wolf. 💙

I haven't been great at keeping anything but the DeviantART updated, and even then updates have been spotty because inspiration and addition comes and goes, heh. Anyway--

I enjoy being able to utilise some of my queer characters to help conceptualise and educate about different aspects of identity. Here, asexual Skyler Rae Jackson and aromantic Amir (not yet surnamed) chat about being aro/ace. Amir's shirt might be a bit on the nose--at first design, I wasn't sure what I wanted his shirt pattern to be. I slapped on the aroace flag temporarily, but quite enjoy it as it is.

I plan to tackle some queer issues in the show, if it ever comes to fruition, but this won't be an actual scene. It's just an offshoot comic.

what do you think about the concept of the comic kids stumbling upon ericsons instead of clem leaving?

It's a fine concept that I doubt anyone would actually implement into their fanworks because comic bad. Most fans are too pissy about the comics to see any further than the tips of their nose, and I totally get it but it's kind of unfortunate for me since it limits the discussions significantly. I can only hear the same, "the comics ruined Clementine and TWDG, Tillie Walden bad, Skybound bad," so many times before I'm so tired that I retire to my chair with a glass of tea to stare disappointedly into the great nothing and deteriorate.

So, for fun, some ideas to toss out there:

As I said in my previous post, Amos would love Ericson. The dude would be all over the place and determined to make as many new friends as possible. I think Olivia would enjoy it, too, and maybe Georgia wouldn't be a half-assed villain... or she could've been made into a great villain... just saying, Georgia could've gotten in good with Marlon, learned about the raiders, and then convinced him to trade Amos away as a means of keeping him away from Olivia. Though, she might not have anything to worry about in this case; I maintain that Amos would've had a major crush on Ruby.

But then we get to Ricca. Within the comics, her character falters due to being Clementine's main love interest. As a concept, Ricca isn't actually that bad. It's the execution and how she's portrayed as a love interest that makes me not like her, so if we remove that, she has a shot at being a compelling character... because we're not sending her to Ericson to be a love interest, or shove her into a love triangle/square with Clementine and Louis/Violet. I think she'd get along with most of the Ericson crew, except I think she'd really butt heads with Marlon and Mitch. I can see her getting on well with Violet, too. I know saying they're alike in a lot of ways could be considered as offensive by some sensitive fans, but they're both queer girls with religious backgrounds and familial trauma and I think it's okay to entertain the idea that they'd get along. Also, they both have snark to them that could easily be bounced back and forth... or at someone else. Probably Louis, or Amos.

And honestly bring everyone except Morro from Book Two to Ericson. Get John away from his abusive mother. Let Amir be friends with AJ, Tenn, and Willy and teach them to play new games and stuff. Emi could teach them better ways to fish and could even go on longer trips to bring back bigger hauls for the group. Fen would love the school setting and would search everywhere for different maps and information about Taiwan. Hell, bring Giles and Ginette, the old French couple who don't speak much English. Let them settle down with little Mercy at Ericson where they can teach everyone how to knit and build stuff and just be grandparents to all these troubled youth.

Yeah, the comics suck, but what's a fandom to do other than take things they don't like and change them to be something they do, yeah?

hiya, sent the looooong ask way back down. it is nice to see that there is a community of people that enjoy canon!alastor, I'm glad I sent that in order to see more of us chiming in.

still, feel like I put us on a bit of a sad train there, so balancing out on your blog with some favourite things about the character:

that he doesn't really like men, but gets on very well with women and that women also very much enjoy his company in return -- vaggie sooomewhat exempt, but to be fair, he did make a deal with her girlfriend, and also he did end up helping her with the commercial, so even she's got more respect from him than I'd argue any of the guys in the show (also isn't she genuinely smiling when he pops up again at the end?) I'd really want to go into deepdives of each of his relationships with women (charlie, rosie, nifty, mimzy, vaggie, heck potentially carmilla and susan too) that we've seen so far. wonder if he'll get on with cherri bomb too if she sticks around the hotel

something about a guy who women feel somewhat safe around, because there's a sense that he's not about to hit on them or objectify them, but just enjoys their company and is in return also very charming and a great conversationalist

(this of course quite funny considering his past as a serial killer, but hey, what character in this verse aside from charlie hasn't got a very messy past with murder)

also I think all the people around him can tell there's a queerness to him that isn't definable by the classic "lgbt" because of how he presents -- I like the way this show managed to hit on some of the overlap between aspec identity and other forms of queer identities, that is, alastor is very camp, and there's a history of aspec people being folded into other queer spaces and having similar manners of conduct and codes of being. I just think the way alastor moves and speaks is wonderfully well done, and not just when he's being a little weirdo on purpose

that being said, also like his weirdo "not-necessarily-trying-to-freak-people-out" traits, like the neck craning. this isn't me talking about him as queer necessarily, it's just something I do as well, especially when trying to understand what's going on or listen better. next time I watch I'm going to pay attention to when he tends to do that

but the being a little weirdo as someone that has always felt like an outsider to how people are "meant" to be and embracing that and enjoying that, rather than angsting about it, especially in a story where there is an underlying theme of romantic love throughout, alastor being there and that not being his drive makes the themes its hitting on so much more rounded (and presumably will continue to do so)

I really like that he doesn't know, because of that invisibility x 100000 during his lifetime (asexual was coined in the early 20th century but it wasn't widespread, nor do I know if there were communities of people who claimed that term as early as the 1920s -- but probably not in louisiana in any case!) especially with regards to the aromantic part of the equation. it's quite nuanced in its depiction (amir talked about liking that too -- that he wanted it spoken aloud so it was there, but it wouldn't make sense for alastor to know)

I am also very into rosie knowing and what this says for her as having a sort of "matchmaker of the village" vibe to her, that she's kept up with the newest queer lingo, but that she's also not told alastor/potentially hasn't even floated the idea properly to him outside of that joke + maybe other jokes?

things we don't know so much about/anything about: I'd be so into knowing more about his relationship with his mother, and how his aroaceness also ties into the otherness/not being easily definable of a creole background, and more about the struggle during his lifetime of potentially feeling apart from what other people are -- since this show overlaps a lot with horror all over the place, I like that his background includes being a serial killer, it has Thematic Deliciousness and fits with the show generally (like I said, who hasn't got a messy past and probably killed some people on this show?) -- but how his becoming close to people is over the radio, with that disconnect between body and voice (relatable to me again) and being able to reach people through that voice whilst it still being on his terms, not how society demands connection, and also through his murders, which in a lot of cannibal murder narratives (hannibal, raw, yellowjackets, ravenous, etc) the idea is about getting close to people, as well as exploring dis/respect of others. basically -- how did alastor feel about the people he killed? were they people he wanted to be closer to, or people he despised, or both? I lean towards the second, considering how he tends to unleash demon form against characters he thinks are beneath him/deserve pain

also in the future, am very excited to see how he'll function both as a very dark grey moral figure who's on the "good guys" team, but who also perhaps will want eventually to get closer to the people of the hotel (he seems to genuinely care, considering he pushed mimzy away without knowing he had an audience in husk), but lack the language of how with the amount he's cut himself off from deeper connections, potentially with an underlying feeling there of "connection = romance" his whole life, and the only ways he's had of dealing with that is by being superficial with people around him/the constant powerplays. basically -- what will it take for him to be genuine and vulnerable around people?

although that being said, clearly rosie, nifty, and mimzy like him enough to have been a part of his life/afterlife for a good long while (not that nifty has much of a choice, but she also definitely likes him)

also wonder what it would take for him to cede control and trust that someone would help him simply because. I think with his background of being an outsider, being callous and taking what you can get however you can get it, only to have someone get their hooks into him through that deal, is such a great, complex little tragedy, and whether at some point he'll be able to escape that narrative or be doomed by it, excited to see. and I think this does play into his being aroace, because of the way this is an invisible, but oh-so-tangible lacunae in someone's life that makes people shun you and treat you differently. as much as I'm into how it's not angsty for him to move through the afterlife the way he does, I wouldn't be averse to some (more) angst related to needing to be in control because it's the one thing that has kept him together his entire life/afterlife, and ultimately the impossibility of that

basically: Great Alastor Altruist and the continued fallout from realising he really did almost just die... for the sake of his friends. and whether that will push him at first into being more closed off/manipulative, or if he'll embrace-ish the idea that he (gasp) likes these people. bit of both probably

saw a post somewhere that talked about how alastor would like velvette the best out of the vees and might even get on with her, and I'm adopting that as a headcanon for now. I just think they'd be such a great odd friendship from the outside, but at the same time it really works + of course vox would hate it

(also one last one that's more salty: other characters potentially going "hey, love might help alastor to open up more" and him getting justifiably very angry at having to assert his boundaries. on the one hand I wish it didn't have to be something as blatant as this for people to get with the programme, on the other, that episode in bojack horseman where todd and his girlfriend are both ace and he goes to dinner at her parents house, and they're both extremely allosexual, is one of the best episodes of tv ever, so sometimes a big stick is what's needed)

this got long, ending it here, but could go on forever. the TL;DR is that I enjoy how rich a character he is, and how that plays into the wider themes and arcs of the show, and how his aroaceness has existed thus far in the show as simply There in mannerisms, including the spectrum of disinterest-disgust when people either talk about romantic or sexual things, or whenever angel tried to hit on him to begin with, but also just the flick of the wrist, the crane of the head, the playful way he interacts with people whilst also practicing vigorous assertion of his own boundaries, the way he weaponises his smile, etcetc. and in subtle things like his easy friendships with women, and how all of the above plays into his character arc of creating distance between himself and other people, whilst asserting control over situations by literally being The Radio Demon, and so on. there's a whole analysis of this particular character as aroace being The Radio Demon that one could do. and that I also like his background and hope we get to see more of it/confirm it more

what was your inspiration to create your main oc?

i wrote a really long response below i won’t blame you if you can’t read the whole thing lmfao 😭 but i had fun thinking about my ocs and writing it!

i made amir way back in april 2020 (3 years ago!!!!). his appearance was at first loosely based on some attractive guy i saw on instagram, then i kept tweaking and refining his features based on a handful of other face claims until he took on a more unique look of his own. i always wanted to keep the strong straight brows, deep-set tired eyes, and sharp pointy nose, those are his defining features to me.

personality-wise, at first i did not have one in mind for him. i just thought he should be a serious, intense kind of guy, to match his appearance. he reminded me of some of the male protagonists in YA novels i read, so that was what i associated him with: a guy who would have to go on a journey of some sort.

the more pics i took of him, the more he kind of reminded me of someone i knew, and i thought some aspects of that person’s personality would really fit this character. actually, a handful of people i’ve known/met. so there’s definitely a real-life influence there. a lot of my ocs have borrowed character traits from people i know/knew irl - is that weird? i feel like it’s the easiest to imagine an oc with certain traits/behaviours when i can draw from real observations, feelings, relationships etc. it makes them more “real” and personal to me.

i wanted a character who would struggle with himself, who was flawed, but who would still strive to do the right thing as best as he could. he had to be a good person, at heart.

i also thought it’d be interesting to see how a masculine character from a strict and traditionalist background would struggle with accepting his own queer identity, and with dating another person who was visibly queer in a small town where they’d both stick out like sore thumbs. 

which brings me to dani (she/they), birth name daniel. at first, when i made dani, i just had the idea to create a sad, lonely and dejected young person who lived in sunset valley, who hated the seemingly idyllic and sunny suburban town, who wanted more than anything to leave and never look back. i can definitely imagine sunset valley to be a strongly conservative, traditional white-picket-fence kind of neighbourhood and i felt like it could be the kind of oppressive place a queer and closeted person would hate. that was where i got the idea that dani was a trans person who could not be out (yet) for the sake of their own safety and survival (in their story, not in these studio pics). the shortening of the name is one small way she tries to take back some sort of control over her self-expression and identity. i think dani’s background is a pretty familiar story for a lot of queer people and it was inspired by a lot of coming out stories i’ve read. as for dani’s face claim, i’ve tweaked their face so many times that i can’t even remember if i had one to begin with...

i thought that amir and dani would actually make an interesting couple because they have a lot in common: they’re both introverts, outsiders to sunset valley, in the middle of their journey of self-discovery, lonely, and 2 hopeless romantics yearning to be seen and accepted and loved.

so yeah that was my inspiration behind creating them and making them a couple. this idea of two people who find each other by chance and they just get each other and they can hardly believe it and they think they’re meant to be forever.
