#and also i love love love Sokka's vest

if this is a weird question feel free to ignore but from the design of sokka you made for the chilling in a pond art. is the vest thingie he's wearing a cultural reference to anything or is it just fun character design? it looks really cool so i got curious
there are no weird questions. feel free to ask! thank you
it is mostly a fun character design. as much i like to designs as closley as possible to the original sources and cultural insipirations they had for the show sometimes you just end up making something up when i try to also keep canon a bit in mind.
i know that sokka canonicaly doesn't wear a vest or anything even similar to a vest, but i am alergic to just putting him in a sleaveless wrap shirt and slap some fur on it and call it a day.
nether the less i think my brain does end mixing things toghether that give sort of some vibes back from things i have learned or seen before. we all know and agree that southern water tripe is based an circumpolar people cultures.
i think the fringe are somethin i picked up form parka the singer Shina Novalinga wears in her videos sometimes.
an other source could be Tlingit. their name poppud up a lot when i was researching lamellar armor. they wear this amazing Chilkat blankets with these large fringes. (they are more north west east cost. but they have teritory in alaska and canada) and also... i just like to add shells because... well live near by the ocean, fishing and such.... i like to think they decorate clothing with it because these things are around. also the moon stiching is a giving. i don't think sokka can ever let go of his first love yue

I’d love to see your take on Bruno explaining to the kids that he’s perfectly content without a partner and kids of his own, maybe because they’re (lovingly) pestering him about it or trying to set him up.
(I sent this prompt to sokkas recently as well, but what can I say I’m greedy and curious to see two of my fave writers’ takes on the same prompt. As a treat.)
-gvr :D
Well @sokkas-first-fangirl already did an amazing job, I hope mine will keep up
****
"Tonito. We need to talk."
Antonio ducks his head. He knows that tone of voice from his Mama. She uses that one when he's done something he shouldn't have done. The 'you are not in trouble but you kinda are' tone. Cami taught him how to recognize it and what to do to get back out of trouble.
He immediately presses his hands together, makes his eyes go big and round and purses his lips. Exactly like Camilo has taught him.
"I love you, I'm sorry and I will never do it again."
Tio Bruno stares down at him with a puzzled look on his face. For a second Antonio is scared that Cami's trick isn't working, but then Bruno's shoulders, which had been up to his ears with tension, loosen up and his lips pull into a reluctant smile.
"Do you even know what it is you will never do again?"
Antonio opens his mouth and pauses. "No."
Tio Bruno finally laughs and Antonio's heart feels a little lighter. Something about his uncle being cross with him is even worse than when it is his Mama. Maybe because it's so difficult to make Bruno angry in the first place. He must have done something truly bad.
Antonio fidgets with the edges of his vest and only stops when he feels a large, calloused hand gently card through his hair.
"I'm not angry, Tonito." His uncle instinctively knows exactly what to say to make him feel better. Bruno always claims that he is not good with other people, but Antonio secretly thinks that other people are just not good with Tio Bruno. "I really just want to talk."
"Okay?"
Bruno sits down on the ground and gestures to Antonio to join him. He probably didn't expect the little boy to plop down on his lap, but doesn't push him off either. "You told me Senora Lorna wanted to speak to me. That she needed help with something."
"Yes."
"But apparently, Senora Lorna didn't need help. She thought it was a…" He clears his throat. "She thought we would be going on a date."
"Did it work?" Antonio asks excitedly. "I read about it in a book. I sent you two on a cute visit."
"Meet cute." Bruno corrects absent-mindedly. "And no, Tonito. We didn't go on a date."
"But I thought you like her."
"I do. As a friend." Bruno sighs and he is really serious all of a sudden. "Tonito, Senora Lorna was really embarrassed. And also a bit sad. It was not nice to lie to her like that."
Antonio can feel himself tearing up. "I didn't mean to make her sad! I just wanted to help."
Bruno pulls him closer. "I know. And she knows that too, don't worry. Just please don't do something like this again, okay?"
"Okay." Antonio sniffles some more. He feels really bad, but he just wanted to make his uncle happy. "I just wanted to help you", he repeats.
Bruno sighs again. Antonio can't see his face because he is still pressed against his chest, but it sounds kinda sad. "I know, amigo."
The little boy pushes away so he can look up at his uncle. "Who do you like?"
Bruno smirks and bops his nose. "I like you, you little troublemaker."
Antonio giggles and squirms away. "No! Not like that. Who do you like like. Like Mama likes Papa."
"No one."
"No one?" Antonio shouts. He thought everyone like liked someone. Even Isabela like likes that girl from the village even though she is always denying it and throwing cacti at Mirabel when her sister teases her about it. Mama told him he doesn't like like anyone yet cause he's still too young. "Are you still too young for that?"
Bruno blinks a few times. He looks like he really needs to think about it. "That's a new one." he mutters under his breath. "I have never liked someone like your parents like each other. Pretty sure I never will."
"But why?"
Bruno shrugs. "There are many different kinds of people on this earth, buddy. Some want something like what your parents have, or something like Isa and her mystery girl. They want to get married and have a lot of children. And some don't want any of that at all. Like me."
"But aren't you lonely?"
Bruno smiles softly and rests his head atop Antonio's. "Oh no. How could I ever be lonely with all of you around? I have everything I will ever need, Tonito. Don't worry about your old tio."
Antonio kind of gets it. And if Tio Bruno says he's okay and happy, then Antonio will believe him.
And anyway, this way he can have his Tio all to himself. That's so much better than a new Tia.
"I'll draw a picture for Senora Lorna. As an apology."
"That's a great idea!"
"Will you help me?"
Cami has said that you can also use the big eyes and pouty lips for situations like this. It seems to be working, because Bruno laughs and ruffles his hair.
"Of course!"

Ok. I've just finished episode 6 of the Avatar the Last Airbender Netflix live action. I do have some issues with episode 3 and 4, but I get it. If I do not compare it with the animated series, I actually do not think episode 3 is that bad, not as good as the previous two, that for sure, but not too bad either. I would give it a 6/10. And to be honest, even if compared to the original series, I do not think it is that bad. I do get what people are complaining about, but guys, it is impossible to copy paste the animated series, you need to cut things out and mix things up a little, link them and put them together, weave it together, if you so want to include absolutely everything (I'm still a bit disappointed the one story I liked, that of Haru, was not included at all). My only problem here is that we miss the air temples destruction and desecration that was kinda important for Aang to come to terms with, and that we do not get to see how the fire nation finds about Sokka's invention, though I guess it is inferred that the mechanist told them as he was a spy for the fire nation while he was working with Sokka. Episode four was actually the worst so far for me. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Bumi's actor was bad at all, in fact, I think the problem was not the acting but the general look of the episode. He looks like he was wearing a costume, the scenes inside the palace look just weird, I guess they have shining stones in the walls, but it looked like they had lamps and electricity. When making and adaptation of an animated series things like this can happen. Because the series was all too realistic, as in real world tangible aesthetics up to this point, the recreation of Bumi's plain clean walls and overall the Palace aesthetics looks too cartoonish and out of place to me. It took me completely out of the fantasy, as did Bumi's vest or whatever he was wearing. On the brightest side, I friggin cried with Iroh's and Zuko's scenes, those were gold. I also think it was a decent way to include the tunnels episode into the live action, so I don't have any problem with that. Fifth and sixth episode, I liked them, and I didn't mind the changes at all. It was fine, actually, but I found Roku to be too... Bright? Like dude was chill, but not that chill, lol. (Also, no hate to the actress, but Mai actress was the worst cast so far, she looks nothing like the character, and I'm sorry, but I do like the actors looking like the characters, and in this case it is not just that she is physically almost the opposite of her character, but that her character had a very particular vibe to it, Wednesday Adams-like, that the actress lacks completely, so this is not even about looks, but about feelings, so to speak).
In general I'm enjoying much more the new material than the old material they try so hard to replicate. I loved episode 2, by the way. Oh, and Archer (or whatever his name is in English), the boy with the hat and the bow, looks like he was taken out of the animated series, he looks exactly like his character XD Loved him (and Jet 👀)
So far, Sokka, Zuko and Iroh remain my favourite characters, though Aang and Katara are growing on me. I must say, I read many people complaining about Katara's and Aang's performance, but since I'm watching the show in Spanish, the voice actors have probably improved quite a bit the delivery of their lines, so I like them quite fine. I still think Zuko is the best casted actor so far, he does not look exactly as I imagined Zuko, nor has his sharp features, but he feels like Zuko, he really does, I really like him and I think he's doing perfect as our prince. His performance is really really good, my favourite so far, and no, it is not because I also loved Zuko in the animated series, it is because I do believe he is bringing Zuko to life with his performance. Oh, I'm actually enjoying Zhao's performance quite a lot too, a bit different from the original, but he's also doing great, I hate that guy XD
Oh, the fantasy animals? They look great. And Ko scared the shit out of me XD

Avatar: The Last Airbender Critique
There are already a million of posts like this one, and I might be saying things that’ve already been said a million times but I’ve recently become reheated about the ATLA ending and wanted to let it out -_- No one asked, this is true, and this may or may not be a way to stall from this final project I still have to complete, but here’s 10 things I didn't like and/or would change about the show that likely shouldn’t need changing because they should have been done in the first place.
1. Katara should have apologized to Sokka after TSR
Tumblr media
It should have happened and it didn't. In my canon-avoiding mind, Katara and Sokka have a heartfelt conversation where she apologizes for the awful things she said, Sokka says he forgives her and he's sorry if he wasn't as there for her as much as he should have been, which he follows up with "but I'm happy you listened to Aang and took his advice," leading into my next point
2. Katara should have said that not killing Yon Rha was her choice
Tumblr media
And thats why it was the right one. Not because Aang already said it was wrong. No no. It was the right choice because that's what she chose. I love my mom to death and can't imagine losing her in any way, let alone the way Katara did. And I can't say for sure that if I was in her shoes that I know what I would have done f that yes I do I would have killed that motherfucker. But I also know that if Katara decided not to kill him, then that was one of two correct choices because they were Katara's choices to make. Not Aang's or anyone else's and this should have been clarified. I know it's a kids show but I said what I said. Next point.
3. Katara should have said more after telling Aang she was unsure at the Ember Island Players
Tumblr media
Katara hasn't had any trouble saying how she feels, especially when it comes to helping others and making them feel better, whether she was right or wrong. But she holds back or overly softens blows and seems to even shrivel up at times when it comes to Aang. And me no likey. I had a boyfriend who I adored and admired and just genuinely looked up to. I'm also a shy and anxious person who hates confrontation, but because I loved him, I never refrained from telling him when he was wrong. I might have been a little shaky about it but I did it tho because when you want to be with someone you walk through the grass and stomp through the mud. And I personally feel like either in that moment or later on in an added scene that Katara should have voiced to Aang how unheard and disrespected she felt about his words before TSR and his actions on the balcony. I hate being uncomfortable and my secondhand embarrassment is toxic but I would love to see a scene of this. I always imagined Katara saying stuff like "But I'm not you Aang, and I'm not an Air Nomad," or "Zuko could understand why I needed to go, and I'd hoped you would too," or...I'm out of ideas but you get the idea. And you know what, I know I'm a hard Zutara shipper, but them having this conversation would honestly make me respect their relationship a whole lot more should it be believably written to end on a good note (I don't see how it could be but hey I'm an open minded person and I did think they were cute together once upon a time). Basically, all I'm saying is that Katara is no small voice and she should have been written that way when with Aang. Boyfriends can make you shy but should never make you weak. Period. Next point.
4. No rock! ONLY GROWTH!!!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
I still squint my eyes whenever I remember that rock that unblocked Aang's chakra. What even was that? The laziest writing possible in my opinion. That's what. And Aang deserved better. What should have happened should have been that Aang started to lose to Ozai. And then as Ozai's about to deliver the finishing blow, Aang has flashbacks of everyone he's trying to save and honor, ending with a very prominent flashback of Katara with the guru's disembodied voice reminding Aang to let go of his attachments to become all he needs to be...then BOOM! Baby boy is back on his feet, chakra unblocked, he kicks Ozai's ass, I'm crying hysterically on the floor, as are the rest of us, and he wins. Then at the end of the series, instead of a kiss, he gives Katara an apology. She accepts, everyone else comes to join them on the balcony, cinematic group hug, camera pan into the sun. I don't know lol. Basically what I'm saying is that Aang did not deserve some deus ex machina. He deserved to grow and become his best self like everyone else got to.
5. Aang should have heard differently in The Storm
Tumblr media
Katara is a very fate-minded person and this is when I saw potential for her to become a toxic character in regards to Aang. When he admits that he ran away from home 100 years ago, Katara tells him that that was basically a good thing because he was meant to be here and now. Like...no? What Aang did, though understandable for someone so young, was still wrong. Yes he would have maybe been killed but I'm like 10000000% sure they had a plan to protect and evacuate the literal avatar. And what was technically "meant to be" was a new avatar. But hey, what's done is done and kicking Aang while he's down is a no-no in this household. But that doesn't change the fact that Aang needed and deserved honesty. Maybe the fisherman could have said this, I don't know, but I feel like Aang should have been told by someone that although running away was wrong, it's a blessing he and Appa were able to survive and be able to help save the world now with his amazing friends found-family. Maybe this is too harsh, and maybe even outright wrong, but I felt like Aang deserved a truer answer here to support and comfort him.
6. MAILEE!!!!
Tumblr media
Do I even need to go into detail?
7. Spiritual sigh*
Tumblr media
Don't make me go into detail -_- I will say though that although Aang and Katara are both amazing individuals capable of earth shattering things, they were not a healthy fit for one another. This is evident in the original series and especially in their children from LOK. They both deserved the best but better than one another.
8. ZUTARAAAAAAA
Tumblr media
This is a Zutara blog you KNEW this was coming, as it should. There's just too much. There's too damn much. I would give a real paragraph to this too, but, I mean, there's already so much proving that this was the pair. Fics, metas, rants, this site. Scroll through my blog or any of the ATLA related blogs I follow and...dude. These two were meant to be together and I'll mourn the narrative brilliance WASTED for no good reason every day for the rest of my life. No reason these two shouldn't be married with three kids. sob. I will take this part to say thank you to the amazing fic writers that gave Katara, Zuko, Mai, and Aang what they deserved that the writers didn't have the guts to give them themselves. Next point tho.
9. AANG AND ONJI
Tumblr media
Good God almighty. Why not this? WHY NOT THIS? I'm putting on my bullet proof vest and I'm going to say this; Aanji is cuter than Zutara. Now before you scorn me or whatever, let me explain. Zutara for me is like steak. No. Chicken parmesan. I like chicken parmesan better. The point though is that Zutara is savory. You know? I don't see them as cute, I see them as Obviously. Aanji on the other hand is like a bag of my favorite candy. They are like a brownie. A cookie. Girl Scout Samoas!...I don't know what words are anymore. This post got way out of hand. I guess what I'm saying is that for Zutara, I scream, but for Aanji, I squeal. I hope that makes sense. But here's the main point I want to make. Onji never knew who Aang really was. And Aang was always, at his core, himself. She very obviously had a crush on Aang for his personality and that was crazy cute and frankly preferable to Katara's "I...guess he is." (you know exactly what I'm talking about) Anyway, I kept wanting more of them together. I wish all the time that we'd gotten to see her again, with a more fleshed out character and all. And in the way that I imagine the show should have gone, she could have been the perfect love interest for Aang, during this episode or way later, even in the comics! Another WASTED opportunity for greatness and I will, again, never recover T-T
10. Iroh get your ass back here
Tumblr media
Maybe this is a misguided critique but I hated that Iroh just left Zuko alone in the fire nation at the end of the series. Baby was in trouble in every sense of the word and Iroh was just like "See ya! You got this nephew." I'm expected to believe that? I'm expected to accept that? No no no. He should have at least stayed for a few years to help Zuko stay upright and, you know, alive. And by "upright" I don't mean "good." I just mean been there to support him because Lord knows he needed it, at least in the beginning of his reign. It was cute that Iroh was able to settle down with his own teashop after all those years of violence and mourning and running and this and that. I was more than happy for him for being able to have that peace finally. But I still think it could have waited a little while longer so he could support Zuko.
That's it I guess. I know not everything I've said makes the most sense in one way or another, but I enjoyed putting it together all the same. Thank you for reading and have a great day. I'll go finish my final now.

Hello! I just stumbled upon your blog and have been reading up since you're a huge Kataang fan and because of your blog, I'm starting to seeing it! (lifelong Zutara fan tho so huge). If you get the chance, how do you think Katara falling in love with Aang is seen throughout the show? I felt it was one sided but i was wondering what was that moment that you knew katara loved aang? feel free to ignore this if u already responded to this & i'll keep searching your blog to find it! Have a great day!
I’ve actually wanted to talk about Katara’s feelings for a while, so I guess this is as good a time as any! I first want to thank you for asking and being open minded. Multishipping is a beautiful thing - and gives bonus more content and Zutaraang is a lovely OT3 no matter which way you slice it. I myself understand the appeal of ZK, even if I’ve always seen them platonically, which I’ve expanded upon here in case you’re interested!
I think Katara was very interested in Aang from the beginning. She’s immediately fascinated by him because he’s the first bender she’s ever met, and I see him as 12 going on 13 throughout most of the series with her having just turned 14 before the start, so it’s closer to a 1.5 year age difference in my head. They become fast friends and enjoy spending time together, like with penguin sledding. Aang respects her village and their elders (her grandmother), is fun loving in a way that Katara deeply appreciates (“Don’t you see? Aang’s brought us something we haven’t had a in a long time: fun”), gets along well with the children of her village, and isn’t put off by Sokka’s surliness. Aang is also the first person to really support her dream of being a waterbender and offers to fly her to the North Pole.
So if a boy was cute, sweet, around my age, made me laugh, supported my dreams, and got along well with my family/community (which the Water Tribes already put a lot of emphasis on the importance of)? I’d be swooning at least a little already.
Even before Katara knows that Aang is the Avatar - the person she always believed would return and save the world - she’s ready to throw all of her weight behind him: “Fine! Then I’m banished too.” And Aang steps in to put her needs above his and not make her choose her family over him, even if they’re devastated from having to leave each other. Again, this is only a few days in. Especially because every time Aang shows romantic or vested interest in her in the pilot, Katara is very into it. Hell, she even kinda ogles him with his tattoos when he’s shirtless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katara: I'm sorry, Aang. Maybe somehow there's a bright side to all this ... Aang: [Cheerfully.] I did get to meet you. Katara: [Smiling warmly at him while offering her hand.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in 1x02, Sokka - who knows Katara better than anyone and her whole life - calls Aang her boyfriend. And although Katara denies, I’m gonna trust Sokka’s gauging way more than I would trust someone who doesn’t actually know either party in question at all (ie. June with Zuko and Katara. And given the war and the Fire Nation colonizing the Water Tribes, seeing a Fire Nation kid waving around a water tribe necklace to hunt a girl down would give me cause for concern about the nature of that ‘relationship’ at the very least).
Season one continues this ‘slow build’. Even before Aang starts actually showing off for the girls on Kyoshi Island, just seeing them give him attention makes Katara displeased. She was genuinely impressed by Aang riding the elephant koi (“He looks pretty good out there!”) and we know from 1x03 that she loves travelling and finds the world fascinating, like Aang does: “We’re some of the only outsiders to ever see an Air Temple, and you’re thinking about food?” We see in “Imprisoned” that Katara values and admires people who are brave and help other people.
Katara: It was so brave of Haru to use his earthbending to help that old man. Aang: You must have really inspired him.
Then, in Jet, Katara gets her first overt crush. Jet is handsome and tall, yes, but mostly he’s talented, outwardly heroic, takes care of his friends, and as a result is the leader of the group. Katara makes him a hat to show her affection and ends up giving it to Aang (but that’s an offscreen interaction, but still). Gee, I wonder who’s also a helpful, brave, heroic leader...
Tumblr media
Katara: Aang is the bravest person I know. He's done nothing but help people and save lives since I met him. (1x12, “The Storm”)
And even if Aang is still learning to be one, he’s fully grown into it by season three (3x11, “Day of Black Sun Part 2”). Even Sokka, who stepped up to lead the invasion, defers to Aang in this moment.
Hakoda: Everyone who's here today came prepared to risk everything for this mission. They know what's at stake. If there's still a chance and there's still hope, I think they would want Aang to go for it. Sokka: [To Aang.] What do you think? You're the one that has to face the Fire Lord. Whatever you decide, I'm with you. Aang: [Rising, turning his back to the group, determined.] I've gotta try.
Katara is also aware of how much Aang means to her even before the mid-season point: “The world can’t afford to lose you to the Fire Nation, and neither can I,” (1x08, “Winter Solstice Part 2”) as well as afterwards: “And we need you” (1x16, “Bato of the Water Tribe”).
An episode earlier in 1x15, “The Fortuneteller,” Katara shuts down the option of Aang as a romantic option - when Sokka suggests it in a clearly mocking manner. But by the end of that episode, even when Katara knows Aunt Wu’s predictions aren’t true, Sokka prompts her to make another realization. Now, Sokka didn’t hear the prediction, and Katara knows that it’s not necessarily true - unless she wants and chooses for it to be. And so...
Sokka: Man, sometimes I forget what a powerful bender that kid is. [Katara's expression changes at this, remembering Aunt Wu's words about her future marriage.] Katara: Wait, what did you just say? Sokka: [Casually.] Nothing, just that Aang is one powerful bender. Katara: [Slowly widens her eyes in realization; as if having an epiphany.] I suppose he is.
Tumblr media
It’s not a surprise that she kisses Aang’s cheek for the first time after this episode. The spark in her heart, that perhaps was a simmering ember before, has been fully lit, and it colours all her actions towards him from here on out. Like, their hug in the s1 finale is one of my favourites, because it’s so clearly her seeking out and receiving physical comfort from him as well. She watched him crack under the weight of his duty, cried after he got kidnapped and she got knocked out by Zuko, worried over him when he communed with the Ocean Spirit (she steps forward but Iroh dissuades her) and watched her brother lose the person he loves, too. No wonder she’s rattled and needs him in that moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I do say love, because Katara uses the word herself in 2x01: “ I'm not saying the Avatar State doesn't have incredible and helpful power, but you have to understand... for the people who love you, watching you be in that much rage and pain is really scary.”
So it’s no question by now that Katara has a burgeoning crush at the very least and knows she loves Aang deeply on a platonic level. So again, I don’t it’s a coincidence that she’s the one who suggests kissing in the next episode and smiles whenever she thinks about it (and gets offended when she thinks Aang doesn’t want to kiss her, which is super ‘platonic’ lmao).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After their kiss, she and Aang have their fingers interlaced as well. Two episodes later in the Swamp, Katara is the one who asks this:
Aang: I was chasing some girl. Katara: What girl?
She’s incredibly pleased when he says she looks beautiful after she gets very dressed up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Sokka interrupts Aang’s almost confession in 2x18, “[Katara looks at him, annoyed].” She then hugs Aang goodbye and kisses his cheek, again. When they reunite after she was captured, she hugs Aang twice and says, “I knew you’d come.” Because she trusts Aang to save her and keep her safe as well, and for a girl who’s been abandoned before (as 3x01 shows with her dad and the loss of her mother), having Aang always come back to her and for her is relieving as it is terrifying for her, because it’s unprecedented. (And also what Suki says to Sokka in s3 too, when unlike Aang, Sokka wasn’t even specifically at the Boiling Rock to look for his significant other anyway).
Then, Aang is shot with lightning, and it is all of Katara’s worst fears realized and is, without a doubt, a traumatic experience for both of them.
Tumblr media
She’s lost her best friend, the person who’s always given her hope and has already changed her life in so many ways, and the boy she’s in love with in one fell swoop. Because when Aang comes back from the dead for her? Beyond it having perfect parallels to their first meeting, and her looking at him like he’s the sun after a long, cold winter, this moment below is the one where Katara knows she is completely in love with him.
Tumblr media
Which is why when she finds out Aang has left the ship of his own volition, it’s just as horrifying and upsetting to her as when Haru was forcibly removed from his home (3x01 and 1x06 respectively). When you watch the camera, she even starts shaking after the immediate realization hits her that Aang is gone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s also not a coincidence, again, that Katara starts acting the most romantically towards him after this. She flirts and dances with him at the party, is a little jealous - and one of my favourite things is here in 1x04 and in 3x02, when Aang is having fun with other people, he notices Katara off by herself and invites her to join, and this time they’ve both grown enough that it works.
Tumblr media
Katara: [Looks away nervously.] I don't know, Aang. These shoes aren't really right for dancing, and I-I'm not sure that I know how to- Aang: [Smiling.] Take my hand. Katara: [Smiles back.] Okay. [...] Aang, everyone's watching. Aang: Don't worry about them. It's just you and me right now.
Tumblr media
Katara also becomes more physically intimate, touching his face in attempts to soothe and connect with him (3x01 and 3x09 to get him to sleep) and is relieved whenever he’s okay, like when he holds off Combustion Man so the rest of them can get out safely.
Tumblr media
Like, I cannot overstate how much Katara loves Aang enough. She breaks and learns bloodbending to save his life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She kisses him back on the Day of Black Sun. She threatens to kill Zuko if she thinks he might hurt Aang. She’s constantly asking and checking up on him. She’s never more pleased than when he laughs at her jokes (mostly at Sokka’s expense) and never teases him the same way she teases Sokka and Zuko. She’s constantly all over him, hugging him and placing her hands on his shoulders. But Katara has lost people before - her mother, her father left because of war, Jet died - and she had to watch Aang die. So it’s no wonder she says she’s confused when he tries to get a straight answer of how she feels about him, which Katara continually dodges.
Aang: On stage, when you said I was just like a ... brother to you, and you didn't have feelings for me. Katara: I didn't say that. An actor said that. Aang: But it's true, isn't it? We kissed at the Invasion, and I thought we were gonna be together. But we're not. Katara: Aang, I don't know.
Like, Aang gives her the perfect way out. She could just say, “Yeah it is true,” or “that is how I feel” or whatever. Aang’s not trying to get her to like him back. He just wants to know what the situation is, because they’ve kissed twice, one time was her suggestion and the second time she kissed back, and they’ve openly and clearly flirted and he’s made her blush, so yeah, so I think it’s totally within reason for him to be like “Hey, can you let me know what your feelings are for me, if you have them?” But Katara can’t let herself fully accept the way she feels about Aang when she knows she could still lose him: “Because, we're in the middle of a war, and, we have other things to worry about. This isn't the right time.”
And we see this follow her into the finale:
Katara: Aang won't lose. He's gonna come back. He has to.
Cue Katara pushing Aang’s “It was worse than that; I was gone. But you brought me back. You saved me” and her own admittance that all the spirit water that brought him back is gone to the back of her mind, because losing Aang is too terrible a thought to bear.
And I can see why. He’s done so much for her and is such an important person in her life. He keeps her grounded, lets her act her age and be a kid again. He supports her (1x01 & 1x02 with her bending and family; 1x06 in freeing the earthbenders even when Sokka doubts it; sides with her in 1x10 about Jet, for better or for worse; 1x18 about her waterbending training; proves he would wreck anyone who hurts her in 2x01 with the Avatar State; saves her life and protects her from falling rocks in 2x02 while also protecting her brother; acknowledging the toll his own mental state has taken on her and being grateful/giving comfort to her as well once he comes back to himself in 2x12; comforts her after Jet’s death with a hand on her shoulder in 2x18; refusing to leave her in danger even if that means sacrificing the Avatar State in 2x19; wholly uplifting her as the Painted Lady in 3x03 - “No, I think it’s great, you’re like a secret hero!” and giving her the space she needs in 3x16 when it comes to her mother’s killer: “You need to take his journey, you need to face this man”).
And I also don’t think people appreciate just how much she trusts him, because like, in the scene I’ve shown below, Katara’s been literally burned by fire before. Having an aversion to experiencing that again, or just the risk of it, would be 100% understandable. But Katara doesn’t even flinch, because she knows Aang will use his aribender to get her out of the way and keep her safe.
Tumblr media
One of the key aspects of their dynamic, beyond how much they give each other hope, is how much Aang’s very existence rewards Katara’s faith. She always believed he would come back and save the world, and he does. He leaves her village and comes back to save it. He distances himself from her after losing Appa and works his way back to her in an overall quick manner and on his own terms, and can acknowledge it: “I thought I was being strong, but really I was just running away from my feelings.” He rescues her from the crystal catacombs. He comes back to life for her. He comes back after defeating the Fire Lord.
And now that Katara knows she isn’t going to lose another person she loves, that’s when she lets herself be with him. Like I’ve said briefly before, Katara and Aang overcome 100 years of separation, two genocides, a war, and literal death to be together, and they know it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because honestly? I think she’s loved him in some manner all along.

I just had a pretty rough day, and I was wondering if you had some spare Modern Zukka or Kataang or Mailee or just gaang headcanons? Your writing always brighten up my day! It’s okay if you can’t, just wanted to ask <3
oh no, anon, I’m so sorry your day was dumb, and I can sure try to make it a little better! <3
some random Modern ATLA headcanons, ft. Zukka, Kataang and Mailee ~
I know they’re not usually seen together, but I 100% think Suki and Toph would be best buddies
badass girl pals, punching the patriarchy in the face together
Zuko totally dresses like a total dork, sweater-vests over button-downs type of dorky, and he totally cuffs his jeans and wear loafers
Azula, and then when they start dating, Sokka, totally has to help hm out in the fashion department
Sokka is obsessed with ocean life?
Sokka and Zuko’s first date was at the aquarium okay
they still like going there a lot
Katara studies medicine, I love med student Katara
she and Mai are low-key pals
Mai is studying forensics so some of their classes interlude
Ty Lee is a high ranking gymnast and Mai is her biggest supporter
she even cheered loudly once
it’s true, Azula, Sokka and Zuko was all there, they all heard it
they all love telling everyone about it, and people who doesn’t know them have no idea why it’s so hilarious
Aang and Ty Lee would totally volunteer at a animal shelter together
Aang adopted both Appa the huge, hairy mutt, and Momo the sketchy, little cat from there
Katara loves them both so much, Sokka loves Appa but is a little weary of Momo
it’s mutual
Zuko sometimes joins Mai when she’s going to visit Ty Lee while she’s there, Mai visits her a work so much people think she works there too
Mai loves animals, like, ay more than people
Zuko finds Druk the three-legged cat there and of course he takes him home
this cat is so... just so, so ragged and weird
dark brown and orange-y fur, huge orange, almost red eyes, a tooth sticking out of his mouth, one of his ears are chipped, and yeah, he’s missing a front leg
but Zuko loves him with his entire heart and soul, so of course Sokka does, too
Zuko got himself a whole ass business admin degree, because he thought he was gonna take over his dad’s company, with Azula
but when they cut him out, and he was later taken to jail for being the worst (also embezzlement and a lot of other real crimes), Zuko was almost done anyways so he just finished
but it ended up being great anyways, because Iroh is expanding The Jasmin Dragon, and Zuko ends up running the second location
he loves it, and turns it into some sort of tea shop/book store thing, and it thrives under his management
Azula is ofc still a boss bitch lmao
idk what she ends up doing, but she does everything well so she’ll be okay, we all know this

hiiii love, congrats on 400 u deserve it <3 <3 mayhaps 27 and/or 82? <3
27. I’m going to die. I’m going to die with an absolute idiot.
82. I finally understand why you call them your arch nemesis... What a dick.
tw for the mention/use of guns. not real ones, but i’m tagging just to be safe!! also language
“Come on Sokka, you can’t hide forever!” Hahn called out, floating down the hallways with a distinctly smug tone that made the hairs on the back of Sokka’s neck stand upright.
“Shit,” he muttered, pressing himself closer to the wall as he looked to his right and caught Zuko’s eyes. “What’re we supposed to do?”
“I don’t know,” he hissed back, eyes gleaming wildly and his hair spilling out of his ponytail and sticking to his face. Still, he was beautiful, and Sokka had to remind himself that now was not a good time to pull him into a kiss- Hahn wouldn’t stop chasing them just because Sokka wanted to kiss his boyfriend. “We’re cornered.”
He pulled his eyes away from Zuko to look around, taking in the dark room they’d found themselves in. He was right- they were cornered. There was nothing except for a few broken tables, papers scattered on the floor, some file cabinets, and a dirty window with broken blinds. They had pressed themselves against the wall next to the door to hide, but it was only a matter of time before Hahn found them. He sighed, fiddling with the trigger of his gun and wondering what he’d done to deserve this.
“What?” Zuko hissed at his sigh.
“I was just wondering what I did to deserve this- getting stuck with my arch-nemesis hunting us down.”
Zuko stared at him incredulously. “Seriously? Not.... Not a plan? You’re always making plans. How are you not making a plan right now, when our lives actually depend on it?”
“I know, I know. I’m sorry. Uhhh...” he frowned, lost in thought. Suddenly, glancing at one of the file cabinets, his eyes lit up. “I got it! We use the file cabinet to break the window, then we jump out after it and run away!”
His boyfriend stared at him, mystified. “I’m going to die. I’m going to die with an absolute idiot!”
“Hey! To quote John Mulaney, I will admit things are getting pretty sticky, but you don’t have to be mean. Besides, what’s wrong with that plan?”
“Sokka... We’re on the sixth floor. We’d be lucky to get away with just a broken leg.”
He frowned. “Oh. Yeah, I kinda forgot about that.”
Zuko rolled his eyes, but he set his hand on top of Sokka’s where it held onto the handle of his weapon. “Okay, what if we-“
He didn’t get the chance to finish before Hahn kicked the door open and stepped into the room with his gun raised and back to them. Without a split second of thought, Zuko broke away from Sokka and launched himself at him, clinging to his back.
“What the fuck?” Hahn cursed, scrabbling to try and get Zuko off of him.
Zuko stayed there though, trying to wrangle his weapon away from him, and Sokka thought he’d never been more in love with him. That thought quickly turned into panic, though, when Hahn swung his free arm forward and slammed his elbow into Zuko’s stomach. Zuko immediately let go, coughing violently as he dropped to the floor, and Hahn used the opportunity to fire directly at his chest. Sokka cried out his name, everything fading away except for the fact that Zuko’s chest was now marked red and he was on the other side of the room instead of by his side. He began running, desperate to get to him.
“No, Sokka!” Zuko yelled, trying to stop him, but it was too late- there was the sound of a trigger being pulled, then a jolt in his chest.
He slid to a stop and looked at Hahn, standing there with his arm raised and pointed directly at him, then down to his chest, where the green circle on his vest had turned to a red x.
“Fuck,” he muttered as Hahn began laughing and the lights came on, the warehouse coming to life once again with laughter and shouts from Hahn’s team.
“Better luck next time, Sokka,” he smirked, clapping his shoulder with the hand not holding his laser gun before leaving through the door he’d kicked open.
Sokka dropped his own laser gun and pulled his vest off before sliding onto his knees next to Zuko, grabbing his hand. “Are you okay, babe? He elbowed you really hard.”
“I’m fine,” he grumbled, blowing hair out of his face in annoyance. “I can finally understand why you call him your arch-nemesis now... What a dick. Who even elbows people in laser tag?”
Sokka burst out laughing and pressed a kiss to his hair. “Yeah, he is. But we’ll get him next time... Right now, let’s just go home.”
Zuko beamed and Sokka helped him to his feet, and they walked out of the laser tag arena with their hands swinging between them.

A/N: For the Hold On @tokkazine! I love how these two banter and play off each other.
Every time Sokka came to Republic City, it felt like a brand-new place. Fields turned into houses turned into buildings until he could hardly recognize the place. The way people travelled, the businesses opened, even the fashion styles changed with the blink of an eye. It was almost impossible to keep up with and there was little wonder that the rest of the world could hardly keep up with the city’s innovations.
Even the people living in the city had a hard time keeping track of it all.
Still, despite how the roads changed, Sokka never once got lost when he headed to Toph’s office at the police headquarters. His body had long memorized the route, even as the sights around him changed. Including, it seemed, the actual headquarters: the building in front of him was twice the size of the old one and fancier too. Sokka stared up at the imposing brick building, bemused.
“When did they even find the time to make this?” he muttered, feeling awkward as he stepped inside. Sometimes, he missed when the department was a small, two-room affair. Toph had only one or two assistants at the time, and her title hadn’t so much been Chief of Police as it had just been The Only Police.
Now there were a dozen people looking at him as he stood in the lobby. They were all dressed in a grey uniform that looked a little like an overcoat with armoured shoulder pads. Recognizing a few faces, he waved as he quickly trotted along the long carpet to back. Toph’s office was always the biggest room in the place, and he scanned the ids next to the offices as he passed. There were two plaques labelling each room, the second in braille, and he smiles as he finally found an open door with her name on it.
Sokka poked his head in to find Toph standing next to a table, her brow furrowed in concentration as she manipulated a metal ball. As usual, when she focused, it was like the rest of the world stopped existing.
Which meant it was the perfect time to surprise her.
Slowly, he tip-toed in, the plush carpet muffling his steps. The best thing about her office was how plain it was—the blank walls were a bright white, the furniture limited to her desk, chair, and one super comfy couch. There was nothing around for him to bump into, nothing to navigate around.
One, two—
“Hey, Snoozles!” Toph chirped, smirking as she set down the metal ball. “You got to do better than that.”
Sokka pouted, crossing his arms as he gave up the jig. “How do you always know when I’m here?”
“My radar, duh?” How Toph ever learned to roll her eyes despite being blind, he had no idea. He was half certain she’d learn it specifically to make fun of him and Aang, but he could never be certain. “Come on, you’ve known that for years.”
“Not that.” Sokka snorted, slightly insulted. “I meant, how do you know it’s me? I didn’t even say anything.”
“It’s…it’s obvious it’s you.” He wasn’t sure if it was the lights or if he was imagining it, but her cheeks looked rosy pink as she dug her fingers in her thighs. “When’d you get back?”
She was the changing the subject. He would have glowered at her, but there was no point. “Fine, keep your secrets.” Maybe it was another Earth-bending skill she was developing. Grinning, he padded over to her, wrapping arm around her back for a tight side hug. “Just now! I dropped my stuff at the temple and bam! Came to see you!”
Toph wrinkled her nose, though she didn’t step away. “You smell like it too.”
“Hey, that’s the sky bison, not me.” Discretely, he sniffed himself. It wasn’t that bad.
Then again, he’d been smelling sky bison for the past few days; maybe he wasn’t the best judge. Pulling away, he sheepishly rubbed his neck. “Maybe I should have taken that bath first.”
‘You think?” Toph chuckled. Heading over to the sofa, she picked up her grey coat. He could just make out a small badge at the front as she draped it over her arm. “Let’s get dinner.”
“Didn’t you just say I smelled bad?” Sokka frowned, confused.
“Didn’t say I couldn’t handle it, did I?” Toph raised a brow, looking more amused than annoyed. “’sides, I’ve handled criminals all day. You’re the least fishy thing I’ve handled.”
Sokka guffawed, loving the duel meaning. God, he’d missed this—there were so few people who got his sense of humour. Even fewer who could make jokes. Sometimes, he dealt with Katara for so long he forgot that not everyone else was a humourless worrywart.
Hands in his pockets, he waited outside as she closed the door. “You good to go now?”
“Yep.” Toph grinned slyly, her voice lowering to a whisper as she leaned closer. “You know what’s the best part of being blind?”
He felt a little like a giant as he bent over, lowering his head so they were at the same level. Despite getting a growth spurt over the years, Toph was still the smallest person he knew. “What?” he whispered back playfully.
“I never have to handle the paperwork.” She winked at him devilishly before humming as she headed toward the doors.
Sokka laughed again as he walked apace with her. Her poor subordinates.
As they slipped out the police station, he asked, “So why the new uniforms?”
“Blame Twinkle toes.” Toph shrugged. Fortunately, despite it being mid-September already, the weather was warm tonight. It was comfortable walking around in his usual sleeveless vest, and Toph even unbuttoned the top two buttons of her dress shirt. She scrunched her nose. “He wanted us to look the same or something. I think it’s stupid.”
“Why? Uniforms are cool.” Sokka pulled the collar of his vest and stood up a little straighter. “I happen to look very good at them.”
Toph shot him a disgusted look. “I’m sure if I could see, I’d gouge my eyes out.”
“Hey!”
“Besides, if Katara or Zuko picked them, sure, but Aang?” She stopped walking and unfolded her coat. Tugging it on, Toph rested her hands on her hips as she turned to him. “Does this look good to you? I can tell just by feeling them they’re ugly.”
“They’re…” Sokka stared at it as the slightly big coat hung loosely off her shoulders. Aang hadn’t even gotten the size right. He’d seen it on the rest of her coworkers but seeing it like this—it wasn’t great. The shoulder pads were too big. The coat was really plain and out of place. “It has…a nice badge?”
“See?” Toph shrugged out of the coat before he could say anything else. Hanging it off her arm, she continued walking. “Everyone hates them except for Aang.”
“I can talk to him,” Sokka suggested, rubbing his chin thoughtfully as they walked. “It’s not like they’re completely terrible, maybe if we…”
“If you find a solution, I’m all ears.” She kicked a pebble and it skittered across the road. “How was the trip?”
Sokka brightened immediately. It was hard not to, considering the past few weeks he’d had. If there was one thing he liked about his job as an ambassador of sorts, it was the travelling. Maybe it was their journey to save the world, but he’d gained a sense of wanderlust from it all, an inability to stay still. Grinning, he started to tick off his mini adventures. “Awesome, I got to go to the Earth Kindgom again, ate the bestdumplings, save the Lettuce-man’s stall for once—”
“He’s still in business?” Toph’s jaw dropped in surprise, an utterly rare sight that he immediately committed to memory. She moved her hands rapidly as she tried to articulate as a proper sentence. “But his cart—didn’t we burn it down once?—I thought he wanted to—he’s still in business?”
“Yes, yes, I don’t remember if we did that, yes, yes,” Sokka replied easily, not bothering to hide his amused laugh. “I guess if we’re not near him, he actually does good business.”
“You just said you saved his stall,” Toph pointed out, raising a brow. She still had a look of utter disbelief, as though he had just destroyed her worldview like they had destroyed cabbage all those years ago.
“Kinda?” Sokka admitted sheepishly, rubbing his neck. “I was kinda the reason it got in trouble in the first place.”
Toph snorted, shoulders shaking with silent laughter. “That sounds about right.”
“Hey!” he protested, shooting her an ineffective glare. Now that he was older and his voice deeper, he could actually growl properly, but she still never took him seriously. Despite her jokes and how childish she acted at times, Toph was very much an old soul, as steady as the earth itself.
“Anything else happen?” she asked, ignoring his objections as usual.
There was no point in arguing. With a sigh, he shrugged. “Lots of ambassador paperwork—”
“Which is why I never want to go.”
“—and Uncle Iroh looked fine.” Sokka frowned, processing her last sentence. “I thought you couldn’t do paperwork?”
“Nah, I won’t want to.” Toph smirked mischievously, and he felt sorrier for her assistants. “Also, Uncle Iroh?”
“Look, it’s really weird calling him just Iroh, okay?” At the memory, a shiver ran through his spine. “I don’t even call our village elders by their name, and they’re like half his age.”
Toph scoffed. “I don’t think he’s that old.”
“Well, okay, maybe, but he feels like it. I tried calling something else and then he got weird about it so we just…settled for Uncle.” Sokka sighed. “And that’s not even going into how weird it is to workwith all of these firebenders. We fought them for so long, and now I have to ride with them on Appa. Like, we all had a little adventure with Zuko, right? How am I supposed to do that with a thousand people?”
“Sounds rough, buddy,” Toph agreed, roughly mimicking Zuko’s voice as she reassuringly patted his arm.
Sokka exploded in laughter; Toph’s imitations had only gotten better with time. “You should have heard Zuko whenever I call him Emperor.” He made a strangled cry; his imitations weren’t too shabby if he said so himself. “I thought I accidentally killed him.”
Toph howled with laughter. “I’m doing that next council meeting.”
He blinked. Now that she mentioned it, she did meet with Aang and Zuko on a regular basis. She was the chief of police for a city they both had founded. Curious, he asked, “Wait, then what do you call him?”
“Sparky and Twinkletoes,” she replied bluntly, without an ounce of hesitation. “What, you think I’d actually call Aang ‘respected avatar’?”
“Even in front of the council?” Now it was his turn to gape, and he almost tripped over a pothole.
“Especially in front of the council.” Utterly unrepentant about it all, she grinned devilishly. “Man, if you could have heard their gasps…”
“I’d try it, but I think Zuko would kick me out.” Sokka laughed. It was ridiculously easy talking to Toph, even for something inane as this. A cool evening breeze wafted by as they walked down a narrow street infested with potholes, but he didn’t mind it. Hell, he didn’t even mind the smell that came from the nearby developments. They could have been walking through Zuko’s palace, the way he felt.
Humming, he squeezed her hand.
Her hand.
Sokka glanced down. They were holding hands. When had that happened? Somehow, he hadn’t noticed, and even now all he could say was how comfortable it felt. Her sly insults, her warm hand, the way she walked as though she ruled the place; every part of it felt like an integral part of him coming home.
“Sokka?” Toph asked as she stopped in front of a brightly lit restaurant.
She’d laugh. No, she’d tease him about this for the rest of his life. That he was the densest person on the planet, to realize like thisthe reason he always looked for her the second he came to the city, how he kept finding her in the corner of his eyes whenever he travelled away. But he’d always been some flavour of an idiot. Suki had told him as much when they’d started dating, and Katara never failed to mention it when he’d missed the signs of her pregnancy.
He liked Toph.
Everything felt so simple the second he’d thought the words, all the pieces falling into place. Elated, he blurted out, “Wanna go out with me?”
“Wha—?” Toph blushed, her cheeks tinged an adorable pink as she gaped at him.
Sokka stared at her for a minute before realizing that he hadn’t actually explained anything out loud. “Er, I mean, you’re—”
Toph snorted. She actually snorted at his confession, letting go of his hand as she headed into the restaurant. “We’ve been dating for months now, Snoozles. What are you talking about?”
“Yeah—” He let out a strangled cry. Sokka shouted at her retreating back, “WHAT?”
Sticking a finger in her ear, she turned to him. “We’re at a restaurant, have some manners.”
It was utterly rich, coming from her, but he couldn’t deny she had a point. Already, strangers around them were gawking at them curiously, twittering softly about the Chief of the Police and one of the Avatar’s Ambassadors. Hunching slightly, he quickly stalked after Toph. “Right.”
“Good.” Her hands were in her pockets now as she entered the small restaurant. It smelled lightly of sizzling meat and spice, a strange aroma that reminded him of that firebender town in the Earth Nation. A small shop, it only had about a dozen or so tables, most of them packed with couples or small families.
Raising her voice, she called out, “Two.”
“Two?” A middle-aged woman turned away from the table she was waiting on. Recognizing Toph, she smiled brightly. “Chief Toph! Your usual spot’s open.”
“Nice!” Toph grinned as she headed further into the restaurant, to a table just outside the kitchen doors. “We’ll have the usual.”
“You have a usual spot?” he asked, momentarily forgetting about their discussion. “And a usual?”
“I’m their number one customer,” Toph added cheekily, slipping into a seat. “I swear this place changes hands like every five months, but the food’s always good so whatever.”
“Isn’t that a bad thing?” Sokka muttered, wondering just how good a place could be if they kept getting shut down. Still, it smelled good at least, and his belly rumbled in anticipation. “The food here…”
Toph’s smile grew wider. “Recognize it? It’s some sort of Fire Nation/Earth Nation fusion thing.”
“Fusion?” Considering Republic City’s purpose, he should have expected that earlier, but still. He looked around curiously. Now that she’d mentioned it, he recognized the decorations—the stone badgermoles, the copper dragons, even the fans had different styles of decorations. “No wonder it smells familiar—it’s like that town we visited.”
She hummed her agreement. Leaning back in her chair, she clasped her hands behind her head. “If you’d come like three weeks ago, you could have had the Water/Fire one.”
“Whaaat?” Sokka slumped over, put out. “Why didn’t you tell me this? We could have eaten there the last time I came!”
“You didn’t ask.” She shrugged nonchalantly.
Grounding his teeth, he crossed his arms. “Is that also how we’re dating? Cause I didn’t ask?”
“No, that’s…” she trailed off, her cheeks tinged an adorable shade of pink. “You did ask.”
“Huh?” Sokka struggled not to shout again, using all of his willpower and self-restraint to keep his tone at a neutral level. “When?”
“Months ago.” Despite her obvious embarrassment at it all, she didn’t shy away from conversation. “You asked me to go out with you.”
“I did?” He clasped his face, his fingers digging into his cheeks as he struggled to remember. What had they been doing months ago? God, he couldn’t remember, it felt like years ago. Hazarding a guess, he replied, “I think I just meant go out? Like going out to eat or going out to do something?”
“Who tells someone let’s go out when you just want to eat?” Toph hissed, daggers in her voice. He flinched.
“If we were inside, then we had to go out to eat. Besides, we both know I’m bad with words,” Sokka hotly defended himself, willing to even throw himself under a bridge to get out of this mess.
“But that bad?” Toph growled, irate. She knitted her brow as she asked, “Then why do we keep going out for dinner?”
“Because we’re friends?” Sokka held his hands up, not sure how to explain this better. “I eat with the others too sometimes.”
“Not like you eat with me,” she argued, her fingers digging into the table. “I’ve asked and Zuko and Aang said you don’t eat with them as much as you eat with me.” When he opened his mouth, she added, “And you travel with Katara, so that doesn’t count.”
He snapped his jaw shut. “It’s not that much,” he muttered under his breath, averting his gaze.
“Twice as much,” she pointed out, raising a brow.
“Oh.” Now that she mentioned it, he had been seeing her a lot recently. “I like your company?”
“You’ve given me hairpins and random gifts,” she said flatly. “You just held my hand.”
“That’s…” Sokka couldn’t deny it. His hand clenched involuntarily, remembering how firm her grip had been, the callouses on her fingertips.
“That?” she repeated.
There really wasn’t another word for it. “You’re right. That does sound like dating.”
God, no one was going to let him live this down. Anyone could do anything, and it wouldn’t match the stupidity levels of this.
“Like I’m ever wrong,” Toph derided. She leaned back slightly away from the table as the middle-aged woman from before walked by, her arms laden with dishes.
“Here you go, your usual,” the woman chirped as she set down two plates in front of them. A curried chicken sat on a bed of rice. Despite how dark brown the curry looked, it smelled faintly of pepper. “Have fun!”
Before he could say anything, the woman gave them a wink and disappeared into the kitchen. Now that he thought about it, that happened a lot whenever they went out to eat. Sokka couldn’t even explain that away, there was no good reason for him to miss that. He really was an idiot.
Gleefully, Toph dug in. “They cook so quickly.”
“What’s this?” Sokka poked the chicken gingerly, a little suspicious. Toph had unusual tastes sometimes, though he hadn’t yet determined if she genuinely liked strange food or was just messing with him. Either way, it did smell nice, so maybe she wasn’t pulling his leg this time.
“The usual,” Toph replied, mouth full. “Trust me, you’ll like it.”
If there was one thing his journeys had taught him, it was to never question food too hard. It was meat, something he couldn’t have at Aang’s, and that was good enough for him now. Hesitantly, he swallowed a spoonful. Despite the spice, he only felt a mild heat as he chewed. More than that, he felt the Earth Kingdom’s more earthy flavours blending in with the Fire Nation’s sharp ones. It was a strange sensation. His tongue felt a little numb from it.
All in all, though, surprisingly good. He took another bite, praising, “I’d eat this all the time too.”
“Right?” Toph grinned at him cheerfully, as she shoveled yet another spoonful. She looked like a chipmunk, with her puffed up cheeks. “Told you.”
It was silly, really, how bubbly he felt just watching her smile. She looked utterly ridiculous, a police chief acting like a little kid over a meal, but there was something utterly endearing about it all. His courage swelling up, Sokka boldly grabbed her hand. “Let’s go out.”
Toph almost choked on her food. Grabbing a glass of water, she forced it down before kicking him. “We’re already going out.”
“Kinda?” He didn’t bother to refute it this time. Even he had to admit the signs didn’t look good. “But I wanted to ask you properly this time.”
She flushed lightly. “Do you now?”
“Yes.” He reached over, covered her hand in his. It felt right. It had always felt right. “Hey, Toph, I really, really like you. Want to see what happens?”
“Really, really like?” she repeated, scoffing. “What are you, five?”
Despite her words, though, her cheeks were as red as flames. He wanted to kiss her. Leaning closer, he asked, “So?”
“Do I need to answer?” she mumbled. For all her cool before, she was a mess now, unravelling with every honest word. “You think I would have pretend-dated you for months otherwise?”
Sokka laughed, almost at her lips now. “No, I guess not.”
Realizing what he was after, the blush spread to her ears and neck as she angled herself for the kiss. They ended up bumping noses and he laughed again. That was just like them. “Oops.”
“You’re so bad at this,” Toph grumbled, grabbing his collar and pulling him down for a proper kiss.

Can you do a zukka fic where firelord Zuko spoils ambassador Sokka and it can be zuko courting Sokka or established relationship and Zuko just wants Sokka to know he loves him and Sokka is thriving
ask and ye shall receive anon!
honestly, thank you for this one, it was wildly fun to write.
I was going to have sokka be much jokier the whole way through, but then I realized he’s actually normally quite emotionally mature and transparent when it comes to love and addressing his feelings for people??
you probably don’t care about all that though--I really hope you enjoy!
zukka: zuko spoils sokka edition
1.5k words
Sokka arrives at his quarters in the Fire Nation royal palace after a long day of meetings, his neck aching and his back a mess of knots.
“What I wouldn’t give for a hot bath,” he says to himself before pushing open his door.
His mouth drops at the sight before him. Three attendants stand inside his room, all around a large massage table. Various jars of oils have been placed on his dresser, and piles of fluffy towels cover his bed. Bouquets of flowers—larger than any he’s ever seen—dot almost every level surface of the room, and the only light is various candles on the floor.
“What is this?” he almost squeals. He blanches and clears his throat, dropping his voice an octave when he says, “I mean, what is this?”
One of the attendants steps forward. “A gift from the Fire Lord,” he explains. He smiles kindly and gestures to the table. “We’ve been ordered to help relieve your stress with our nation’s traditional six-handed massage.”
Sokka nods appreciatively, his hand coming up to rest on his chin. “Well, I do deserve it,” he says. He looks around the room at the flowers once more, and his brow furrows once more in confusion. “But wait, Zuko? Zuko did all this?”
The attendant looks back at his colleagues. They shrug. “Well, we did the actual work,” the attendant points out, turning back around to Sokka. “But the Fire Lord asked us.”
“Even the candles?”
“Yes,” the attendant replies. “Would you like to sample the oil choices for your massage? We have ylang-ylang, lavender, orange blossom—”
“And the flowers?”
The attendant sighs. “Yes, and the flowers.”
Sokka considers the room once more.
“Sir, would you like your massage, or—”
“I need to talk to Zuko,” Sokka interrupts, heading for the door.
The attendants look at each other in a panic.
“We have a new ocean spray scent!” one of them shouts.
Sokka stops in his tracks and turns around. He grins, almost maniacally. “I guess it won’t make much difference if I talk to him in an hour,” he says, already pulling his shirt off.
Two of the attendants glance at each other at the sight of the chiseled, near-naked warrior, while the third coughs and says, “Actually, sir, the traditional six-handed massage normally lasts three hours.”
Sokka gawks at them, his face stretching into an expression they can only assume is delight. “Well, let’s not waste any time,” he says, hurrying onto the table. The attendants set to work, covering him in the fluffy towels and pouring oil onto their hands. He sighs as they begin kneading the knots out of his back. “I could get used to this,” he says dreamily.
As soon as the massage ends, a newly limber Sokka rushes through the halls of the palace to Zuko’s quarters. He bangs on the door, striking it with both fists, until it opens suddenly. Sokka springs back. Zuko stands in front of him with his hair down and in a short robe, open to reveal he wears nothing but a pair of shorts underneath.
“Can I help you, Sokka?” he asks.
Sokka looks up quickly from Zuko’s chest to his amber eyes. “Uh, yeah, actually,” he says hurriedly. “Actually, wait, can I come in? Unless it’s too late. I can come back tomorrow, but I’d really rather—”
Zuko opens the door wider and gestures for Sokka to come in. They sit on two settees facing each other, a few feet away from the Fire Lord’s bed. Sokka becomes painfully aware of the fact that he is in Zuko’s bedroom.
“Do you want some tea?” Zuko offers, gesturing to a pot on the low table between them. “I have jasmine, but I know you really like chrysanthemum. I can ask a servant to bring another pot.”
Sokka shakes his head hurriedly. “Jasmine’s good,” he says, leaning forward.
Zuko pours the tea into two cups, and the two men sit in front of each other waiting for it to cool.
“So, what’s up?” Zuko finally asks. He leans back, and the robe falls open to further expose his torso.
“First, I wanted to thank you for the massage,” Sokka says sincerely, avoiding looking at Zuko’s body.
“Oh, did you like it?” Zuko smiles lightly, his eyes bright.
“It was heavenly,” Sokka gushes, his eyes closing as he recalls it. They open abruptly. “But I also wanted to ask—you’ve been giving me a lot of stuff lately.”
Zuko looks startled. “Oh,” he says gruffly. “Have I?”
“Don’t get me wrong,” Sokka says quickly, shaking his head, “I love stuff.” He points to himself. “Big stuff guy over here!” He grins warily. “It’s just, between the new swords, all of the maps, not to mention the atlases, that cool belt, and now this?” He pauses, and his voice turns quiet. “I’m beginning to wonder what it means.”
Zuko’s cheeks turn red, and he grabs his teacup. He grimaces as it’s still too hot, but he keeps holding it anyway, and even goes to take a sip. Finally, he addresses Sokka.
“I guess I didn’t realize how much I was doing it,” he says. He looks away. “I’m sorry I made you uncomfortable.”
“No, no,” Sokka hurries to say. He grabs Zuko’s free hand. “That’s not what I meant at all.” He smiles at Zuko when the latter finally ventures to look at him again. “I promise, you haven’t made me uncomfortable. In fact,” he jokes, “I think that massage made me more comfortable than I’ve been in years.”
Zuko manages a small smile. He looks at his hand in Sokka’s.
“You’ve been so helpful to me,” Zuko says quietly. “Not just recently, but ever since we met and became friends. It means a lot. Not many people have been there for me like that besides my uncle. I just want you to know how much I appreciate you.” He hangs his head slightly. “Because I do appreciate you. A lot.”
Sokka can only stare at Zuko, surprise filling every plane of his face. He becomes painfully conscious of the feeling of Zuko’s thumb unconsciously running over his knuckles, back and forth, slowly, in the tenderest gesture of affection. Sokka grins.
“Zuko,” he says gently.
Zuko looks up.
“Do you like me?”
“What?” Zuko stammers. “Of course, I like you. We’re friends—”
“Not like that.” Sokka smiles kindly, patiently.
Zuko’s eyes go wide, and he pulls his hand away from Sokka’s to bury it in his hair. “Yes, fine,” he says hoarsely. “I like you. A lot.” He groans. “Now, can we never talk about this again?”
“Zuko,” he says softly.
“What, do you want to embarrass me more?”
“I don’t think it’s embarrassing,” Sokka says simply, “especially if I like you back.”
Zuko looks up abruptly. “What?” he breathes.
“I’m your ambassador from the Southern Water Tribe,” Sokka explains in a rush. “You really think I have to live in the palace and come to every single one of your meetings?” He shrugs. “I must love you at least a little to sit through every update on the firework budget, don’t you think?”
“What?” Zuko asks again, dazed.
Sokka stands and takes the cup from Zuko’s hand. “I’m saying I love you,” he says in the steady tone of his voice. And in a move Zuko could never have expected, Sokka places his hand to cradle the left side of Zuko’s face, tilting it upward, and leans forward to kiss him.
Zuko’s eyes close as he finally feels Sokka’s lips on his, gentle and steady, parting slightly to suck lightly on Zuko’s bottom lip. Sokka smells of something fresh and salty—the phrase that comes to Zuko’s mind is ocean spray? He reaches up to pull Sokka toward him by the waist, gasping as Sokka moves his mouth to the corner of Zuko’s mouth, to the underside of his jaw, his throat, his ear.
“I love you,” Zuko says breathlessly.
Sokka pauses his ministration. “I’d hope,” he laughs. “You’ve spent more than enough to show it.”
“I can stop—”
Sokka places a finger to Zuko’s mouth and shakes his head. “Like I said, I’m not complaining. I do love stuff.”
Zuko chuckles. “I did mean what I said, though,” he says. “That I want to show you how much I appreciate you.”
“Don’t worry.” Sokka settles into the seat next to him and tugs at Zuko’s hand to lean into him. “I can think of plenty of ways you can do that.”
“I’d love to hear them,” Zuko says with a wry smile.
“Well, I have been thinking of getting an axe,” Sokka starts, bringing his fingers once again to his chin. “And I think I’d look really cool in a leather vest. Oh!” He snaps his fingers. “And those mongoose-goose feather pillows at the Beifongs’ house. Never slept better.”
Zuko laughs. “And that’ll be enough?”
“It’ll be a start,” Sokka says cheekily. He presses another kiss to Zuko’s neck and grins when he feels him shiver. “For now, though, this is more than enough.” And he leans forward to kiss him again.

Some Bolin hcs please?
Headcanon A (realistic): Bolin has SUCH “was a self-conscious chubby kid” energy, which Ithink explains some of why he occasionally implies that Mako had better luckwith dating and sex than him, which, lmao. It probably surprised him for awhile after he got into pro-bending when people started taking an interest inhim. He walks around built like a brick house wearing tight ass vests, withtree trunk arms and a pretty boy face, but he’s still like “hm people keeplooking at me, do I have something on my face?” He eventually gets over thisand self-identifies as a snack. I mean how could he not, when he becomes cinema’sfirst sex symbol?
Headcanon B (unrealistic): Unrealistic because Bolin loves love, and loves Mako and wantshim to be happy, but I like to think that Bolin is just constantly suspicious of anyone who shows romantic interest in Makobesides Korra and Asami. He always thinks Mako could do better, because heseriously thinks Mako is the coolest guy in the world. He also constantly triesto set Mako up with guys because he knows Mako is gay before Mako knows Mako isgay, but Mako is a dense bitch who’s just like “huh Bo sure brings a lot offriends over”. When Mako eventually comes by holding hands with Wu like “bro,,,I’m gay”, Bolin is just like “bro,,, I know,,, but like,,, this guy?”
Headcanon C (sad): Similarly to how Sokka feels about Kya, I get the feeling thatBolin has a lot of guilt about not remembering his parents, since Mako has beentaking care of him for as long as he can remember. He at least has the comfortof the family photo so he doesn’t forget their faces, but that isn’t perfecteither, since those faces basically mean nothing to him. It’s why he clings somuch to any family he becomes a part of, much more than Mako, who does remember their parents. Bolin ismore enthusiastic about finding family in Ba Sing Se, he’s the most upset whenTeam Avatar drift apart in Book 2, and he lovesliving with Tenzin’s family because it’s a healthy family dynamic and he’s welcome with them. Bolin’s most quiet characterarc is him looking for a family beyond a photograph.
Headcanon D (canon? don’tknow her): Bolin absolutely owns being pan. He realised when he was very young that gender hasnever been a factor in who he thinks is pretty, and if he’s being honest it’severyone ELSE who’s weird. “I mean, you like one gender? I have to laugh.” When they’re staying at Zaofu he andMako have some heart-to-heart pyjama talk about Mako starting to think abouthis attraction to dudes, and Bolin makes it very clear that he’s supportive ofMako being gay, because how can he judge when he’s like “Oh Opal is very prettyand a girl, Wing and Wei are very sexy and boys, Huan is emo cute andnon-binary, spirits help me.” The Beifong family alone could constitute Bolin’ssexual awakening tbh. It’s one of the things Bolin and Korra bond over.
I love my stupid sexy husband

C10: My Self-Worth's Fragile Like An Egg
Book: A Good Kid
I groaned when I woke up, remembering what happened yesterday. How could I break down like that? Now that they knew I was vulnerable they were going to stop being so nice. I just know it! My only hope was to act like nothing had happened.
I threw on some clothes, slapped on my eye shadow and headed down stairs for some food. I slipped into the kitchen to see Thomas making himself coffee when he saw me he gave me a huge grin.
“Good morning Virgil!” He greeted “how are you?”
I shrugged and opened the cabinet to find some cereal “why are you acting so weird?” Thomas was a pretty cheerful guy but he could be really…. Touchy in the morning when he hadn’t had his coffee yet.
“I’m not acting weird!” He said, still smiling. I gave him a look before moving to the table with my cereal. “Anyways,” Thomas said, grabbing his coffee and sitting down across from me “I wanted to talk to you about last night.”
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
“Really?” Thomas turned serious “because you burst into tears last night.”
“I’m fine” I muttered, I could tell Thomas was hesitating to tell me something. “Look, whatever it is just tell me.”
The man took a deep breath “okay well, I signed you up for therapy last night.”
My head shot up “what?!”
He winced “look, I think it would be good for you to talk to someone.”
“No way man! I don’t need some shrink trying to pick my brain apart.”
“Well.” Thomas gave me a look “you’re going.”
I stood up, breakfast abandoned “well, you can’t make me!” My heart rate increased at the thought of seeing a therapist, even more so than denying my guardian.
Thomas looked up at me calmly “actually I can. And I’m sorry if you don’t want to but you’re going. It’s already been paid for. It’s one session, if it doesn’t work then you don’t have to go back. But you do have to go to this session.”
“Fine.”
“Great!” Thomas said “we leave in an hour.” I just huffed and back stormed upstairs.
------
I glared at Thomas from my place on the couch in the therapist’s office, the man rubbed his eyes and sighed. I won’t go into detail but it was a struggle to get me here.
“Look. I know that you don’t want to be here but will you please give it a chance?” He asked, practically begging at this point. I just glared at him silently with my arms crossed. “Fine,” He sighed “well, I’m going to go. I’ll be back in a hour.”
Thomas left and I glared at the wall, in any other situation I would make a run for it but I had a feeling that Thomas was going to sit in the waiting room just to make sure I didn’t. I sighed and looked around the office, which was decorated with toys and posters of Disney and Cartoon characters. Great, he was a children’s therapist. Not only was I going to have my brain picked, I was also going to be downgraded like I was a five year old.
I jumped when a voice said “it’s the moment you've been waiting for!”
My head snapped towards the door as I could see someone’s arm and…. Were they singing a theme song? I didn’t recognize it but it sounded like a theme song. Finishing his ‘intro’ the man walked over and plopped down in his chair. The man had dark(ish) pink hair and glasses. He wore a light blue sweater vest with a long sleeved, pastel, collard, yellow shirt with a light pink tie.
“Hello,” he said, “do you how do?”
“What?”
“Ah well my name is Dr. Picani, and you are?”
“....Virgil… but shouldn’t you know? Cause of paperwork and all that?”
“Yes, but it helps a patient feel more comfortable when they introduce themselves.” I groaned, great it’s been five seconds and he’s already trying to shrink me. “Is everything alright?”
“No.” I declare “I’m not doing this.”
“I’m sorry?”
“Look man, no offence to you or whatever but I didn’t choose to come here. The only reason I am is that Thomas thinks that just because I had a little breakdown last night I’m all of the sudden ‘mentaly unstable’ or whatever.” I said, using air quotes around the words ‘mentaly unstable.’
“Well, alright.” Dr. Picani said “if that’s how you feel. But if you don’t mind me asking. Who’s Thomas?”
I sighed, already annoyed “Thomas is my foster dad.”
“Oh, so you're a foster kid?”
“Yeah,” I raised an eyebrow “you got a problem with that?”
“Not at all. Now before we start I should ask if you have ever been to therapy before?”
I sighed again “let me guess, you are not going to just let me sit here until this is over.”
“No, I’m afraid not.” Dr Picani smiled at me.
“Fine, I’ll answer your questions if you answer one of mine.”
“Of course!” He said “go right ahead.”
“If I share stuff with you are you going to tell Thomas what I said?” I figured that I might as well get this over with. Especially if the guy wasn’t going to leave me be. But if he was going to tell Thomas what I say… then I would much rather keep quiet.
“No, not without your consent.” He said “but if you are hurting yourself or others then I will but if you aren’t then everything said here will be kept private.”
“Fine, I’ve only been to therapy once. About a year ago when my dad went to jail.”
“Really? And how was that?”
“Which one? The therapy or the dad thing?” I asked.
“Therapy” He clarified.
“It sucked.” I said “she didn’t do anything besides tell me that I’m a screw up, which I already knew.”
Picani frowned and wrote something down. “Now, why was your dad arrested?”
I let out a dark chuckle “let’s see… child abuse, neglatance of a child, edangerment of a child… I think there’s a few more in there that I don’t know about.”
“I see… now you don’t have to answer this but I’m guessing you were the one he was abusing?”
I shrugged and looked down “mostly me yeah I mean, I get why.” I pulled the hood of my jacket up and said, “I deserved it.”
“Now hold on, why do you think that?”
“Cause I’m a no good, useless, rotten screw up who will never find love and everyone hates.”
“Hmmm you remind me of Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
His words broke me out of my spiralling thoughts and I looked up at him “who and what now?”
“Prince Zuko from the show Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
“What’s that?” I asked.
“It is a show about a world that is divided into four nations. The Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads. Each of them are represented by an element for which the nation is named.” Picani explained. “Benders have the ability to control and manipulate the element from their nation.”
“Only the Avatar can master of all four elements. The Fire Nation wants to conquer the world but the only bender who has enough power to defeat them, the Avatar, has disappeared. Later in the show two siblings, Katara and Sokka, find the Avatar who is a young airbender named Aang. Aang must now master all four elements in order to stop the war and bring peace to the world.”
“I see… and who’s this Zuko guy?”
“Zuko is one of the main antagonists for a good portion of the show. His sole mission, right from episode one, being to capture Avatar for the sake of the Fire Nation.” The therapist chuckled “and he is always grumpy.”
“Wow, I’m feeling so good about myself at this comparison right now” I said sarcastically.
“Just hang on a Momo, over the episodes, it becomes clear that Zuko is after the Avatar for more than just the sake of the Fire Nation.” He explains “there are moments where Zuko withholds information from and even sabotages the efforts of other members of the Fire Nation. All so he can be the one to hand the Avatar over to his father, Fire Lord Ozai, and regain his honor.”
“Regain his honor?”
“Yeah he ‘lost it’ after speaking out of turn in a meeting. Stating that sacrificing a whole Fire Nation troop as a simple distraction in a battle plan was not a good idea. What an offence, amiright?” He said with a touch of sarcasm “his father punished him by facing him off in combat, burning and permanently scaring his face, and banishing him from the kingdom until he could return home with the Avatar.”
“That uh… sounds like a bad dad.”
“That sounds like an understatement.”
“I’ve never seen the show man, give me a break.” I muttered, my hood falling off. “Look, I don’t understand why you're comparing me to this guy. I mean, yeah my dad hurt me but he never left any scars.”
“While that may be true one thing Zuko struggled with is wanting to make his father proud.” Dr Picani said.
I glared at him “and you think I’m the same. No effing way man, I couldn’t care less about what he thinks!”
“Okay, okay. I apologize, I didn’t mean to offend you.” He said “so you don’t care too much for your father. But what about the rest of your family?”
I sighed “well there was also my mom and older brother. Mom…. died several years ago, I don’t like to talk about it, and Janus…. It's complicated.”
“Complicated how?”
“When we were young Janus and I were pretty close but after mom died and dad started drinking and stuff he started bullying me at school. Dad loved it.” I said the last part under my breath but I knew the doctor heard me say it.
“Well if that’s the case then you’re much more like Zuko than I thought!”
I looked up at him “What? How?”
“Like you Zuko had a sibling who tended to bully him. His younger sister, Azula, she was constantly being praised by their father for her talents while Zuko was pushed aside.” Dr Picani said “tell me, how did your mother treat you?”
“Um… it’s been a while since.. You know.. But she was amazing.” I let a small smile fall unto my lips “sometimes it feels like she was the only one who actually cared about me. And now, no one does.”
“Well, I’m sure that is not true. After all, your foster father brought you here. Don’t you think that’s a sign that he cares for you?”
I hesitated, a month ago I would have said no. That Thomas was just trying to make himself look good by taking in some helpless foster kid. But… I have had foster parents who were like that, even if they were trying to make themselves look good they would still give me up around the three week to one month mark. “I don’t know.” I admitted, looking down in shame and a little bit of panic. If Thomas wasn’t using me for some kind of personal gain, then why did he take me in?
“Now, I know that you said you don’t care about what your father thinks.” Dr Picani said “but do you think that you still judge yourself based on what he thinks of you?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, you mentioned earlier that you thought yourself to be a screw up. Is that something that your father ever said to you?”
As I thought it over I realized it was true and I nodded “among other things.”
Dr Picani wrote something down and began to talk about this Zuko character again “one of the main issues Zuko had trouble with was that he believed his father that he was the only one that could give Zuko his honor back.” He said
“And that gave him a lot of problems with his self worth. But if he had realized sooner that worth didn’t stem on what his father thought of him. If only he learned to trust the words of his mother who he lost when he was a child or the words of his loving uncle, who was always there for him. Then maybe it would have saved him a lot of internal struggle.”
“Did he ever get better?” I asked. Despite not wanting to come, here this man compared me to a fictional character that was in a similar situation to me… helped.
“Yes. He did.” Picani said “but he didn’t get there alone, it was through the efforts of his uncle that he was truly able to start a new path for himself.”
“But I don’t have anyone like that.” I said.
“What about your foster dad, Thomas? From what it sounds like he’s truly trying to help you in whatever way he can.”
“I don’t know… It’s… hard to trust people. Especially adults” I explained.
“Well, is there anyone else you can think of that you can go too?” Picani asked.
“Well, I mean, there’s my foster brother, Patton.” I said “I don’t really trust him a whole lot yet… but I guess I can try.”
“That’s great! Finding people you can rely on is always a good thing.”
-----
After the session finished I walked out to the waiting room where Thomas was sitting on his phone. When he entered he looked up and stood as I walked over to him.
“How was it?” He asked.
“It was nice…” I looked down “thanks.”
I didn’t need to look at him to tell that Thomas was smiling “you’re welcome.” He hesitated “if you want I can sign you up for another session.”
I paused, an hour ago I would have said no… but Thomas was right. It had been nice to talk to someone. Even if he were a little strange.
I looked at Thomas. “Okay.”

Hello! For those of you who don’t know me, first off I’d like to say you’re missing out, and second off my name is Julia and I’m a high school senior. Im one of the most sarcastic and pessimistic people you’ll ever meet, while simultaneously being the biggest ball of energy out there. I like to describe my play style as a very new school game that’s hallmarks are being dynamic and being chaotic. I’m really excited to be a part of this season!

The worst prisoner rambly notes: under the city
COD is going to go down very differently. One thing that will stay the same is the key-role the familiar dynamics between Zuko/Azula and Iroh affect how the whole thing plays out.
I have some rambly thoughts about the fIre-nation royal family dynamics.
Wow, they are a hot mess of layered drama and dysfunction…like an abusive lasagne. But this messed-up family gives us Zuko and Azula, and they are so fascinating. Nothing is simple between these two. I loved the recent Ehasz tweets about the possibility for Azula's redemption, and I have always had my own ideas about how Zuko and Azula could salvage their relationship. It was nice to get a sense of vindication, because I don't think Azula is a lost cause.
Tumblr media
Watching the confrontation between Zuko and Ozai, I was struck by the sheer surprise Zuko expresses when Ozai says his mother is alive. What did he think before? Out of loyalty to his mother, Zuko wouldn't have believed (in his heart) whatever story Ozai concocted*. Zuko knew his mother wouldn't abandon them, and his dad's story didn't make much sense.
Tumblr media
*low-key: for real, what did Ozai tell people? The whole situation stinks to high heaven. His father mysteriously changes his will, without consulting or informing anyone, and then just as mysteriously dies suddenly and unexpectedly (longevity being a family trait), and his wife disappears all in the same night. Like, for goodness sake, you don't need a special investigation to see something shifty as all hell happened.
Tumblr media
Does Ozai say 'my wife mysteriously ran away, abandoning me and her children and her royal duties, and that's all there is. Nothing to see here folks.' Does he just 'trump' his way through all the naysayers and yell his version of events as loud as possible and hope the power of the throne will prevent people from questioning him further? Like seriously. Does the entire Fire Nation also think he murdered his wife? Low-key, I think they do, but they let wife-murder slide, because he's the fire-lord now and you can't accuse the fire-lord of murder – not unless you are planning a full-scale coup and a very confident you will win.
Ironic eh? It's the one terrible thing Ozai didn't do, and everyone assumes he's guilty.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Zuko never bought, not entirely, the whole she-didn't-love-you-and-abandoned-you story his dad was spinning. But I think it would take him a long time to process and come to terms with the most likely outcome. I think he couldn't deny it any longer after he had his epiphany about the Fire Nation and what Ozai was really like, (leading up to his epic "fuck you, dad"). Zuko just had that epiphany earlier in my story than in canon. So Zuko thinks his mother is dead and Ozai killed her. That's why the "yo mama's alive" bombshell floors him so much.
Tumblr media
Azula, on the other hand, has a very vested interest in believing her dad.
Azula seems to actively resent Zuko underneath all the contempt. I wondered what might prompt this, considering she so often has the upper hand and is in a position of power over him. I think it was more than just a general feeling that their mother loved Zuko more, (though that certainly is a factor). So I wrote that she believed for a long time that Ursa was alive and Zuko knew where she was. It was easier for Azula to think her mother was alive and feel angry at her brother for withholding, than contemplate the possibility that her actions in assisting her father had led directly to her mother's death.
The biggest difference between my story and canon is that Zuko has experienced much more healthy friendships and relationships at this point. He knows what it is like to feel safe and be loved by people other than Iroh. He reciprocates this feeling in spades. (He's inclined towards loyalty, which is why feeling that he betrayed his Uncle cuts him so deep.) He was torn between his Uncle and the Gaang earlier in the chapter, but it's crossroads/choice time.
Tumblr media
He's also seen, first hand, a really healthy brother/sister dynamic. Katara and Sokka have one of the best sibling relationships in tv. Love those two. However, we all consider what we grew up with to be "normal". Zuko is very usedto Azula. He would have normalised a lot of her behaviour and thought 'so this is just what family is like'. You bet every time Sokka and Katara had a squabble and Katara muttered something like "you put your socks in my clean pile one more time and I will kill you," Zuko would have thought ah, it's not just Azula who says shit like that.
This kind of thing is completely normal for Zuko:
Tumblr media
However, Katara is here to clear up that little misconception. Katara, coming from a fairly well-adjusted family, is rightly horrified when she hears about the shenanigans that went on in the palace during Zuko's childhood. My two drama llamas aren't going to agree on everything. Azula's gremlin status is one area where they disagree. But at least they can talk openly about their disagreement and hear each other out.
Next chapter with be the battle under Ba Sing Se, til then my lovelies.

Being patient
Summary: An impatient Aang suddenly becomes a patient.
Word count: 2,134
Author's note: This one's a reminder to myself that if writing a fanfic isn't self-indulgent, then what's the point? In other words, I've been trying to relax after 2 very stressful/exhausting months (I'm glad it's over and I feel much more cheerful now). So last Saturday evening, I was simply surfing on the web (doing the things that make me happy/give me pleasure) when at some point before going to bed, I had this idea. The concept of Aang spending time with Suki was inspired by the ongoing "Imbalance" trilogy. Also, I imagined they look exactly like in the "Old Friends" poster.
----------x----------
"..And then Suki punched me right here in the ribs. I felt like I lost my breath for a couple of seconds. She totally caught me off guard!"
Aang proudly pointed at the invisible bruise under his arm. Katara gave him a slightly unimpressed glance, turning her gaze back to the open folder in front of her nose on the desk.
"Well, you should count yourself lucky she didn't break anything. Cause that'd mean more work for me. I'll give you a nice healing session as soon as we get home, okay, sweetie?"
The airbender grinned at that suggestion. He laced his fingers and laid his hands on his belly, his grey eyes staring up at the near-white ceiling of Katara's office.
"I never realized how dangerous sparring can be. Especially with her."
"Are you saying I'm going soft on you?"
He stuttered, one hand coming up to the back of his head to scratch it in an awkward manner as his cheeks turned crimson.
"Umm.. well.. compared to her-err.. I mean, we use bending when we spar. Water can't really knock you breathless."
"Unless I drown you."
Aang gulped at her deadpan reply.
"Good point. Maybe you'd like to spar in a fistfight some time? No bending of any kind, just the two of us against each other, one-on-one?"
Katara giggled.
"It's a fight date."
She turned her attention to the paperwork and continued filling in the last form among that particular patient's file.
Meanwhile, Aang opened the third pill bottle she'd given him earlier, and picked a single tiny, round, yellow vitamin from the inside. This one tasted sour, like lemons, but he liked rolling it around on his tongue until the sweet outer layer melted off.
He put the cap back on and grabbed the other two bottles, swirling them around above him using his special marble trick. He sent them flying across the room with a miniature hurricane and they landed back in their proper cabinet, after which he airbended another slice of wind to shut the cabinet door.
"Are you done sh-oon?" he wondered as he chewed the last vitamin to pieces before swallowing.
"Almost. I just need to fill in this last form. Only a few more lines, I promise."
Aang groaned and bended his knees up to have a look at his bare feet. Apparently, dirty shoes of any kind weren't allowed on the examination table. Taking them off had it perks, such as giving his feet some rest from the constant squeezing, or the chance for his toes to sink into the short, but soft fur of the long, white carpet on the floor.
He could still see the other big bruise on the outside of his right shin, from the time Suki tried to literally sweep him off his feet. He wiggled his toes and had a look around the office. According to Katara, it was supposed to be at room temperature, but his feet felt otherwise.
"Hey, could you hand me a blanket?"
"Blankets are for the bedridden, Aang."
"Well, what am I lying on right now?"
"That's an examination table, not a bed," she insisted in a playful tone. Aang pouted and crossed his arms in annoyance, taking a couple of deep breaths to warm himself up with firebending.
Katara stifled her laughter as she stood up from her armchair and unbuckled her belt, pulling her short-sleeved coat over her head. After she'd tidied up her loose hair, she approached her husband from behind and surprised him by flinging the coat in the air. She let it land on his upper body and her fingers began tickling him as she attempted to tuck him in.
"But my coat isn't for the bedridden. Here you go, sweetie."
Her size was so small that it barely covered his chest and stomach, but Aang appreciated the gesture nonetheless. He gave her a loving smile.
"Thanks, Katara! Mmm, it's still warm!" he claimed, slipping one hand in through the furry collar. She hummed in delight and kissed the arrow tattoo on his forehead, then returned to her desk to finish the paperwork.
The airbender stretched himself and released a loud yawn, folding his arms and resting his hands on the pillow under his head. When he pricked up his ears, he could hear the scratches of her pen against the pieces of paper. The way the armchair rubbed against the rest of her clothes whenever she moved or fidgeted in her seat.
His "bed" was kind of stiff, but much more cosy than what he and the air acolytes were used to sleeping in. He couldn't help it if Katara's office was so quiet and practically begging him to doze off. The silence was killing him and slumber did seem very appealing.
"How much longer?" he asked drowsily, releasing another yawn in the end.
"The more you bother me, the more it'll take."
Aang heeded her advice not to bother her anymore. He simply shut his eyes and waited for sleep to conquer him.
Katara took another five minutes before she happily dropped her pen in the pencil holder and put the papers back between the patient's file. She opened the lower left drawer and placed it between all the rest in correct alphabetical order.
"Done! We can go home now, sweetie."
Her husband didn't budge.
"Aang?" she repeated, slowly getting up from her armchair to check what's wrong since he didn't answer.
Katara sighed in relief once she walked up to him and saw that he'd fallen asleep without her noticing. She couldn't blame him for Suki being such an early bird and having their sparring session so early in the morning that he had to hurry out of the temple just to meet up with her in the city on time.
"Oh, sweetie.."
She perched on the edge of the examination table, steadying herself with one hand. She tenderly stroked his head with the other one before she adjusted his makeshift blanket. He seemed so tranquil that she would've felt guilty for waking him up after making him wait for so long.
Katara noticed the nasty bruise on his shin, which reminded her of the alleged one over his ribs. She stared at the two big pots of clean bending water on either side of the window. If already equipped, why not have the healing session right then and there? After all, what would be a better place for doing it than a healer's office at the hospital?
She summoned a big blob of water and began waterbending it over his body to scan for any more injuries, starting from the soles of his feet. Katara healed Aang's shin and, slowly but thoroughly moving upwards, she detected the impact from the punch on his left side, right above his ribs like he'd described. Luckily, none of the bones seemed to be broken and she was pleased when she couldn't find any more bruises.
She waterbended the remainder of the used water into the sink and got up to go fetch a tin of salve. She smeared it over the bruise on his shin, hoping it'll do the trick and the lesion would disappear within a day or two.
Her fingers ran along the wrinkles of his sash before she spun around to bring the tin back into the cabinet. She wanted to be certain that his lungs weren't injured from the blow either. After she'd washed her hands, Katara stepped over to her desk to grab her stethoscope, then joined Aang on the examination table.
Before taking a seat, she leaned closer to his face and kept her ear near his open mouth for a minute. Outwardly, he didn't seem to have difficulty breathing.
She hopped back up on the bed and put the medical instrument into her ears. Next, she pulled the makeshift blanket down to his waist so she could press the chestpiece against his side to listen. From what she could hear, there was no reason for concern. Apart from the fact that his stomach growled.
"Aww, you poor thing!" Katara murmured to herself. She slid the diaphragm down, a bit closer to the waistband around his middle to check the sounds coming from his empty stomach. If finding food was their biggest problem, she was fine with it.
Aang probably hadn't eaten anything since breakfast. Sparring with Suki in the morning and attending a council meeting with Sokka around noon didn't leave him with much spare time to grab a bite to eat. He'd flown Appa straight to the hospital as soon as the meeting ended, and he'd been there for her to keep her company since.
In order to prolong his nap, Katara decided to listen to his heart too while she was already at it. She tucked the stethoscope under his sash, in hopes of hearing the subtle beats through the fabric of his red vest and the yellow robe underneath. She smiled, the rhythm was as steady and calm as ever.
Her eyes grew wide when suddenly a loud purring sound reached her ears and she couldn't hear his heartbeat properly. He was snoring. Katara released a short giggle since he'd unintentionally managed to scare her so easily. Also, she had an old trick up her sleeve to make him stop.
If she ever woke up in the middle of the night because of Aang's snoring, she'd kiss him. She'd used this trick several times throughout the years. He'd usually kiss her back instinctively or turn on the other side afterwards, which would cease his snoring. At least for a couple of minutes, long enough for her to fall back asleep.
Katara leaned down, close to his face, and tenderly brushed her lips over his own first. Then she pressed them together to kiss him. It was no surprise to her that he stopped snoring and seemed to be returning the kiss through his sleep.
She understood that he was awake when one of his hands came to the nape of her neck to pull her in deeper, and the other one pulled out the earpiece from her right ear.
"Mmpmh.. Katara, what are you doing?"
"Oh, you know.. just checking how healthy you are and finishing your healing session. Did you enjoy your nap?"
"Yeah, I did. You gave me a healing session? While I was sleeping?" the airbender wondered while he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.
"See for yourself," Katara said proudly, patting his right knee. She pulled the other earpiece out of her left ear and placed the stethoscope around her neck while her husband sat up to check her work. Aang believed her story since he could smell the salve a mile away.
"Thank you, Katara! That was really nice of you. And you said you also gave me a checkup?"
"Mhmm," she hummed, nodding in agreement as one of her hands ran down the rubber tube of her second necklace. Her other hand landed on his heart and tenderly stroked his chest near the spot she'd healed.
"What's the diagnosis?"
"A handsome, 22-year-old young man, who had a couple of bruises on his body from today's sparring session with his sister-in-law. Whose breathing is still pretty much as even, controlled and beautiful as an airbender's should be.."
Her compliments were interrupted when his stomach growled again.
"..and who's in danger of dying from hunger. We're not going anywhere until you've had a bite to eat. So that's why, as your healer, I'm prescribing you with 50 grams of hematogen. Wait here!"
Aang didn't say a word and simply watched how she dashed to the other side of her desk, opened a drawer and picked up something. Katara brought him a tiny nutrition bar that reminded him of chocolate. She unwrapped the top of the wrapper and handed it to him, doing the same with her own.
"Eat up!"
She sat next to him to enjoy the light snack together. Aang knew better than to argue with a healer's orders, so he followed her example and began nibbling on the bar of hematogen.
"Mmm! This is really good! What's it made of?"
"Sugar, grape sugar.. uhh, powdered milk, palm oil, vanillin and processed moo-sow blood."
He stopped chewing and nearly wanted to spit it out, but Katara laid her fingers on his mouth to stop him.
"It doesn't contain any real blood. There's this special protein called albumin that's been taken from a moo-sow's blood. Completely safe for vegetarians to eat."
"Oh, okay.. That's good to know. Thanks for explaining, sweetie!"
He kissed her on the cheek, leaving a few crumbs behind. She started laughing when he pecked them off one by one. Their pet name "sweetie" really lived up to its name.
