As the title suggests, i'm not sure what's actually the unpopular opinion -- that the Southern Water Tribe does use betrothal necklaces, or that it doesn't.

So, here's my take on it. Between the following || is everything we know about SWT betrothal/engagement traditions: ||

Now, i know that the betrothal necklace is only established as a Northern convention, that Katara and Sokka didn't recognize it as a betrothal necklace until getting to the North, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not also a SWT tradition.

Maybe it was a tradition they lost when they no longer had the free time or resources to make necklaces. Maybe it had just been a really long time since anyone got engaged, and Sokka and Katara didn't remember the last time it happened. Maybe it's a very private matter in the South, and nobody explained it to Sokka and Katara because their mom was dead and their dad was away and the war made it less urgent. Maybe it's a tradition the SWT decides to embrace post-series when they start rebuilding.

So my opinion of dubious popularity is, it could go either way. I care enough about my feelings to spit this out onto the Internet, but it doesn't bother me when a fanfic has Katara reject the necklaces as an engagement symbol or not.

I believe that Tenzin actually made a betrothal necklace, but since we don't see Pema wearing any, I believe he made it for Lin, and since they don't end up together, the necklace now sitting collecting dust inside a box he kept on his study. He can't bring himself to give it to Pema because when he crafted it, it wasn't her in his mind, but he can't make another one either cause it's something he holds sacred. That betrothal necklace was the closest thing he got to marrying the love of his life, yet when he decided to not giving it turned out to be the lost of his life. So, every once in a blue moon, he would open the box, admiring the necklace and wising it was wrapped around Lin's neck rather than collecting dust in his study.

How would your write a zukka proposal(with sokka proposing and making zuko a betrothal necklace?

I am actually not a huge fan of betrothal necklaces between zukka. Idk, the tradition seems more of a NWT thing and I like that they have their own way of life separate from the SWT and their traditions.

Also,,, knowing the betrothal necklace that belonged to Kya originally belonged to Kana and is now a family heirloom from their deceased mom… I just don’t see the romantic aspect for Sokka or Katara. Idk I think the necklace had a different meaning for them and a lot of mixed sentiments so yeah it’s just not something I headcanon sorry anon :)

"A Promise from the Winds to the Waves"

Rated M - Aang: 18, Katara: 19

Summary: Aang has an elaborate plan set up for a perfect proposal to Katara.

Aang's heart swelled with warmth as he watched Katara marveling at the wonders that the small oasis held, his love and admiration for her overflowing. With a contented smile, he glanced around at their surroundings, taking in every detail, every sensation he felt. And in that moment, he felt in his soul that this was the perfect time, the perfect place.

“Wait here,” Aang told her, and hopped through the wall of water to retrieve the box from his wrap.

Katara watched curiously as the waterfall split this time and Aang emerged again, holding a delicate wooden box close to his body as he shielded it from stray droplets. Katara’s eyebrows raised with confusion for a split second before she recognized the symbols on the box. She would know them anywhere, they were from the water tribe. Even knowing that this could be anything that Aang picked up at the tribe, Katara's heart fluttered with anticipation. 

“What’s that?” Katara gasped, her attention no longer taken up by the wonders of the cave. She placed the lotus flower back in the pool, shifting to stand but Aang knelt in front of her, his knees grazing hers as he faced her. 

Taking a deep breath, Aang slowly lifted the top of the box, revealing not just a stunning handmade necklace—an unmistakable water tribe betrothal necklace. The realization that struck Katara halted her breath. What she noticed first, and what truly moved her, was the way Aang carved the white stone pendant, designing it in such a way that the air nomad and water tribe symbols intertwined and blended together to create a beautiful fusion of their respective cultures.  A visual and tangible representation of their unbreakable connection.

Imagine Tenzin going to Sokka for help in order to make Lin a traditional Water Tribe necklace.

Imagine them talking about design and functionality and arguing about a metal clasp (she's a metalbender uncle) vs the traditional band (metal gets cold in the Poles in case you ever visit kid.)

Imagine them arguing about the colour of the stone and the color of the band (blue is traditional; but she's an Earthbender!) And settling on a pendant design that can be swapped out for four different coloured bands (one for each nation...for diplomatic reasons). Tenzin loved the design but wondered why his uncle had it hidden away (Sokka had designed it a long time ago, had made it but never got to use it)

Imagine Sokka being as proud of Tenzin as if he were his own son, teaching Water Tribe customs to the next generation.
