Another quick rection from me, this time for the 390 bnha leaks!!!!!! :

Iida and Shoto's friendship is everything to me. They have now helped each other reach beyong their family darkest times and have given the absolute most for each other. I love them soo much!!

This justice and happiness for so many meta writers that have been telling the fandom it'd be like this. I salute those writers, wishing them an amazing time on their "I told you so".

I'm so glad Horikoshi made Enji acknowledge verbally and explicitly all the mistakes he has committed against his family and made him apologize to every one of them individually. He mistreated his family in many different ways but they all deserved closure. The ones following me for a while know that I'm not an Endeavor fan, but I appreciate what he brings to the narrative sometimes.

While I'm pleased that Enji is finally accepting his responsibility inthe fallout of his family,it scares me a little because I know the fandom would start fighting about wether Rei and his kids should forgive him immediately or not. It's gonna be different from each Todoroki, so stop for a second and ask yourself if in those situations, the victims should be pressured to do one thing or the other. If Fuyumi forgives Enji immediately but Touya never does, it is okay for both of them. Whatever makes them happy and helps them through their trauma, as long as it is not self-destructive or risks other people's lives.

I KNOW IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE FUNNY but Dabi saying that he should be dead —they all should be dead really— hurt a lot, but then I read Natsuo telling him “well that's gonna be a problem because you're gonna live bro” was so sibling behavior of them. Touya is suicidal and finds it easier for things to be over now, he hadn't planned for this to go this far, you know? And that's exactly why Natsuo asks what does he plan to do next.

I haven't read the translation yet, but if they really phrased it as "hellish life" (Natsuo says that's what awaits Dabi, after seeing the ice on his chest) is gonna be an immense irony but amazing writing. Dabi told Enji to come dance with him in hell, but isn't life hell on its own way sometimes? I love when a character that planned to die lives, because it defies the narrative and questions the character while giving room to so many opportunities.

SHOUTO FINALLY ACKNOWLEDGING HOW COMPLEX TOUYA'S ORIGIN IS. It's nothing you can solve with mere words, nothing you can solve with a conversation. This is a huge win in this manga, contrasting the shonen trope of things being solved through words or the speech of the protagonist.

People better give Rei all the recognition she deserves or I'm gonna start punching them.

Touya saying they all should be dead and that he hates them all and Enji asking for him to tell him how he feels— this is how things get solved. It's a callback not only to Enji, but to many other conflicts were pro-heroes and other adults should have listened to victims, villains or their own kids to understand what was wrong, but decided to tackle the issue without even caring to have a grasp on it. Right now, Enji wants to start from where Dabi is, not from where he wish he should be. He's not arguing against Touya's feelings or going against them or anything. He is willing to communicate and listen to him, he is being open and vulnerable and direct and that's exactly how it should be. Super funny coming from me, but this was an Enjj win.

BUT I'M IN SHAMBLES FOR TOGA. I AM KICKING SCREAMING SCRATCHING THE WALLS OF MY ROOOOOOM.

If there is a testament of how much they (the members of the League of Villains) care for each other, it's that Toga can't see Dabi's fire anymore and immediately wishes he found a way to smile, exactly like he said she should. She's having a whole breakdown over how much she knows she love Tomura and Dabi and why her quirk won't work from them, but even with tears in her eyes, she's wondering if Dabi is happy now, if he was able to reach his goal. Horikoshi please, you need to gives us all a panel of Touya and Toga smiling together after the battle, okay? They deserve it.

OCHAKO IS SO CLOSE TO HER RIGHT NOW as she's being held down by multiple Twice clones. I'm so excited to see the resolution of their fight!!! It feels perfect that Ochako gave that speech about wanting to see the people she love and people in general smile and now Toga is just thinking about that with Touya. Narratively speaking, I enjoy so much how these girls are connected to each other. Now that Shouto reached his brother and was able to stop him with help from his family, it's time for Toga and Ochako, then Deku and Tomura.

I'm satisfied and happy, being honest. There's still some road left ahead, but I'm liking what I'm seeing at the moment. This must be one of my favorites chapters so far!!!!

BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Todoroki Mansion (Part 1: Outside view)

So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.

Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.

OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:

The Todoroki family (轟家 ‘Todoroki-ke’) is clearly a rich one due to Todoroki Enji being the Number 2 Hero and solving more cases than anyone in recorded history.

It's composed by 6 people, Todoroki Enji (轟炎司), the family head, Todoroki Rei (轟冷), née Himura (氷叢 Himura), his wife, his eldest son (長男 'Chōnan'), Todoroki Tōya (轟燈矢), his eldest daughter (長女 'chōjo'), Todoroki Fuyumi (轟冬美), his second son (次男 'jinan'), Todoroki Natsuo (轟夏雄) and his third son (三男 'sannan'), Todoroki Shōto (轟焦凍).

Below there's a scheme of how the family was before family members started leaving the house as, at this point in the manga, apparently no one lives in it (first Rei was hospitalized, then Touya supposedly 'died', then Shouto moved to U.A. dormitories, then Fuyumi and Natsuo moved to their new house and, even though Enji is supposed to still live there, since he was tailing after Midoriya, the house was basically left empty).

We know Enji's father died way before his marriage, we have no info about his mother and we know Rei's parents continued to live in the Himura residence, which is clearly a large traditional Japanese house.

While it's implied in the past the Todoroki family had people working for them to help with the housework and, possibly, with the care of the children, in fact, after Shouto's birth Enji said he would hire helpers/servants (使用人'Shiyōnin') and Natsuo mentioned they used to have a maid (お手伝いさん 'Otetsudai-san') who would cook for them but retired due to back problems (the English version calls her a cook though), we only see in the house someone who's not a Todoroki once, when the children are playing.

It could be a servant supervising them... or it could also be Rei's mother visiting them. We'll never known.

The Todoroki too live in a huge traditional Japanese house, which the manga calls Todoroki mansion (轟邸 ‘Todoroki-tei’).

Since no one mention the Todoroki family being prestigious for something else that's not the fact Enji is the Number 2 hero, I tend to think the house is one he either built or bought, not the one in which he was raised.

OUTSIDE OF THE MANSION (AERIAL VIEW)

As usual, manga and anime disagree on how the place should be.

The anime gives it an even huger garden and adds what might be two extra storage buildings and a large gate on the left, probably to allow a car in.

The house also seems a single block, where in the manga it seems U shaped, with a garden at the center of the U.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

We see glimpses of the neighbourhood when Aizawa carries Shouto home (he has to park his car outside it)

...and when Ending pecks at Endeavor's house.

There seems to be a street that leads straight at the gate since when Natsuo leaves the house he walks straight ahead of himself.

In an OAV instead we see a glimpse of the street that runs parallel to the gate.

Anyway it's clearly a residential area.

In Episode 25 we see Shouto walking to reach the hospital. It's unclear if the area he's walking through is near his house or he got distant from it already, but, in case it's near his house, the scenery seems to imply the house is built uphill since Shouto has to walk downhill.

THE GATE'S ENTRANCE

Manga and anime seem to mostly agree with how it's supposed to be, the only addition being the anime shows also a glimpse of what I assume is the large entrance for a car.

INSIDE THE GATE

Now yes, there are some differences between the manga and the anime, like the path leading to the house, the small gate near it, the placement of the trees and the Ishi-dōrō (石灯籠 “stone lantern”) near the house is completely missing in the anime.

Credits when it's due it was the anime who first came up with how the Todoroki Residence entrance looked like so, if anything, it was Horikoshi who did the changes... unless he showed them a drawing of how he wanted it before showing it in the manga.

ENGAWA

An Engawa (縁側/掾側) or En (縁) is an edging strip of non-tatami-matted flooring, usually wood or bamboo. It may run around the rooms, on the outside of the building, and can resemble a porch or sunroom.

Usually, it is outside the translucent paper Shōji, but inside the Amado (雨戸) storm shutters (when they are not packed away). However, sometimes it runs outside the Amado. An Engawa that cannot be enclosed by Amado, or sufficiently sheltered by eaves, must be finished to withstand the Japanese climate. Modern architecture often encloses it with sheet glass.

The Todoroki Engawa is meant to give a view to the inner garden. In the manga the one we always see is the one on the right...

GARDEN

From the engawa the garden can be seen with what's likely a koi pond and a bridge.

THE TRAINING HALL (OUTSIDE)

The manga seems to imply that that small building outside the house but still connected to it is the training hall, since its from it that the noise form Enji and Shouto's training comes.

The anime instead seems to imply this is the training hall from outside.

Note that in the story when the characters seem to go to the training hall they don't seem to get outside, nor the training hall is shown to have round windows... so yeah, whatever.

ROOF

The anime shows us the corner of the roof. It's not overly important, I'm just showing it so that the whole thing is complete.

Is there a correct way to write a story?

The answer? If you were expecting me to list a bunch of "oh, don't do that. It's ugly, and I don't like to read it," I'm sorry to disappoint you, but the answer is that there's nothing entirely right or wrong.

Sure, I might have an issue with those who romanticize abusive relationships and situations, but if your story delves into that without romanticizing anything, I have much respect for you.

The real reason I decided to write this is because yesterday @lanternadosafogados came to me to say that there are some posts here trying to dictate how we should write our stories. Of course, don't confuse them with posts where people genuinely give helpful writing tips. I've used some in my stories, and they were immensely helpful.

Here, I'm talking about those posts – the ones that you, a dedicated writer who just wants this space to be fun, rolls your eyes at and sighs heavily.

I'm referring to posts like "How to write characters in imagines so that I feel represented." And when you read it, it's someone complaining because, imagine this, a character in an Imagine doesn't act as they would.

Well, my readers, I must say Lyra Belacqua doesn't act as I would in many situations, yet I identify with her and consider her my favorite book protagonist.

What am I trying to say? 1. Writers don't have a crystal ball to watch you and write stories with someone 100% like you. 2. If you want a character that's a spitting image of you, open a Google Docs or Word and write it yourself. I'm not getting paid to write, let alone to put up with demanding people.

And now something I've seen with my own eyes. Once, on another fanfic site, a girl posted a text complaining that authors didn't finish their Denki Kaminari stories, yes, the Pikachu from BNHA. At no point did she mention that the author might be going through writer's block or a difficult time in life or simply be busy and uninterested. No, she gathered a small group of people to complain about discontinued stories and how the author couldn't do that to them.

That's when I couldn't resist. I've received messages like "Hey, did you delete that story? I liked it so much" or "Are you going to continue that story? It's my favorite of yours." So, I decided to go there and comment something like: "I'm sorry you can't read your favorite stories about this character, but if I can give you a friend's advice, I recommend you try writing a story the way you want. Maybe then, you'll see how difficult it is to write and won't demand so much from the author."

And you know the best part? While the comments supported her point of view, she responded with great enthusiasm. But after mine, she simply deleted the story. I really wanted to put a bunch of laughs here, but that would break the text. But know that I'm laughing a lot as I write this part.

People like that only know how to demand from writers. If they knew the amount of time we dedicate to a story or how frustrating it is to go through writer's block, they wouldn't do that.

Oh, and if you think the absurdity has ended, my dear ones, there's more since I opened this hellish Pandora's box.

Let's go to the last, and what I consider the worst of all. In the middle of 2016 or 2017, if I'm not mistaken, my uncle passed away due to an illness he had been fighting for years. To cope with the grief, just as I did when I lost my father, I wrote a story in his honor. But I think I wasn't so well psychologically to write something of that weight, you know? Knowing that I was writing this story for someone who died affected me a lot, so for my own good, I put that story aside. And what message did I receive? "Has the mourning ended, and you gave up writing?"

I swear, if I were 1% better mentally, I would have already told the person to go to hell. But I was so down that I just uninstalled the app from my phone and for a while considered giving up writing.

And, just so this post doesn't end with nerve-wracking stories, I say, I decided to come back and not let that unloved and rude person stop me from doing what I loved the most. And as for him? After sending me the message, he never touched the account on that site again. So I think each of us made great choices in this regard.

Seeing how diverse the biology is in BNHA makes me wonder what kind of special hell the medical field must be. Even just ignoring all the superhero/supervillain battle damage, being a doctor must be hellish with all the mutant quirks and everything. Like you're working on a patient, and they have an acid quirk: are the symptoms they're experiencing acidosis or is more acidic blood natural for them and it's something else? This other patient has a reptile quirk, how does it affect their standards? Oops, John from accounting played around with his shape shifting while drunk and now he has three legs, what do you do???

The medical field is already a mess without quirks so you're absolutely right, it must be pandemonium right now. Especially as quirks become more complex as generations go so odds are that as soon as you understand how quirks work, everything changes.

The number of vets who must constantly be on-call... Trying to figure out if a patient is in pain because they are sick or something or if because their quirk isn't adapted to their body. People like Bakugou and Ashido who can destroy things accidentally when they are treated.

But what worries me even more than medicine in general is obstetrics.

Can you imagine helping an invisible mother giving birth to an invisible baby?

Imagine if Ashido gets her quirk from her dad? Now imagine carrying to term a potentially acidic baby.

i once saw a whole meta about how 'deku doing things alone is unfairly framed as a flaw by the narrative because why would he rely on adults when they've disappointed him at every turn'

and i couldn't help but think that the meta pointed out a whole other flaw in the series, re how many characters look like they're not doing anything because they're never given the tools.

like mha is one of few shounens where there have been very few non school based arcs where the adults have not tried their bests in the given situation (except like... native in stain arc and those dumbos with the sludge villain). the adults in bnha are not unreliable, they're just never given the tools to "go beyond" in the same way deku is. hell, not just the adults, pretty much everyone outside of deku/all might is not given that chance.

aizawa has been repeatedly injured very severely, to the point of losing a limb and an eye, put in hellish situations, and ive seen people claiming that deku watching him go down after keeping like 74534 villains at bay at USJ was a case of 'seeing heroes fail'. Just because aizawa or hawks or whoever are not given the safety net of new mc power up to get out of situations doesn't make them any less heroic, doesn't mean they're trying any less.

yet there's this widespread belief in the fandom that the adults/other characters are 'useless' and that deku 'curbstomps' everyone, that they're 'holding him back', all because, despite everyone contributing their very bests, deku is the one with the generations running power with 50 hidden level up abilities that lets him go rage mode and look cool and take people down.

100% is not enough? no problem you can go 1000000% now

100% is not enough again? no problem here's convenient time girl who lets you briefly turn into saitama at no personal loss

1 quirk not enough? here's another and another and another

oh you're mad an want to keep fighting despite your slushy limbs? look you can fight in an entirely different plane this quirk conveniently has

and i love izuku a lot as a character. he's very lovable. that's the whole point of him. he's a relatable, shy nerd who's been treated badly by others but retained his kindness and now gets the chance to prove himself. he's likeable because he's never made any real mistake/hard decision that could put you off on him. even the usual abrasive parts of a shounen mc are stripped away from him. he's like... perfect. he's the perfect fanservice character to project on and to root for. and there are large chunks of the fandom who are so into that "lone mistreated wolf shows everyone up badass mc" trope and don't care about what that does to a story from a writing standpoint.

and maybe it's just me, but that feels so juvenile and wish fulfillment-y to me. maybe i shouldn't be reading a shounen lol

Yeah, I agree. It’s utterly unsatisfying and that’s why I’m so mad at where OFA went in JTA, because it used to be different. Deku felt like a character who struggled, a character who honed his power and tried to tease the maximum out of it. It used to feel like there were stakes. Now it’s just like - he pops out a new quirk on a weekly basis and masters it instantaneously.

But also, to me it honestly felt like that any other character could have done what Deku did, given a chance at having OFA. Now we know it’s not true, but even then it’s just a genetic thing - something Deku was born with, like people are born with eye colors and hair colors. So all that praise just feels bizarre to me.

Deku’s overly perfection and endless plot armor just makes him a very difficult character to enjoy at this point to me.

Hey! So I see you read Dorohedoro recently. Did you like it? Another question is what is the best manga you discovered in hellish year 2020? Thank you for your time!

Hey Anon! Yeah, I did read it last month and I loved the hell out of this series!

Not sure if you’re asking for a rec or if you read it, so I’ll try no spoiler, but honestly I started it with 0 expectation and I read the whole thing in ten days, constantly reminding me not to spoil myself as I was so eager to know how everything would end. This series left me yelling “hell yeah”, being anguished and crying, all at the same time.

It’s very rare to come across series like this one, I find: not only is it completely mad and full of dark humor, but the world-building is for real and so is fleshing out the characters, on top of incredible comedic or dramatic timing as far as plot twists go. Additionally, the main themes and how the story concludes on them are absolutely magnificent, on par with the art style.

Finally, the plot. Didn’t expect one, didn’t expect it to be basically solved halfway through the series, leaving me to wonder what the second part of the series would be about, only to come into one of the most daring written arcs I have ever read, thematically-speaking.

As for the cast, considering all the dark humor and grim world-building, I honestly didn’t expect to get attached to the characters or to be emotionally invested in their developments. Well, clearly I was proved wrong and the diverse cast is full of surprises. Even for characters I didn’t necessarily like for the most part, whenever they were at the heart of a plot twist or simply saving the day, I couldn’t help but cheer for them!

Not gonna lie though, it is a visually gruesome series (I didn’t watch the anime, but, seeing the gif below, I can imagine they did justice to the manga), so in that aspect, maybe it can be a little upsetting to more sensitive readers. If you’re okay with it though, then you’ll have the time of your life.

As for your second question...

I honestly can’t decide between Dorohedoro and Blade of the Immortal, mainly because the genres are so different that it’s hard to consider which one between the two I Iiked more, considering I loved and devoured both series in approximately a week.

The only common point would be the revenge theme for both. However, where Blade of the Immortal is a rather serious historical & political tale of Japan from Edo era with a touch of fantasy, Dorohedoro is an unhinged inter-dimensional fantasy horror story, lmao. Both gave me the time of my life, though! Definitely my best discoveries of 2020!

BnHA Chapter 249: Todoroki Taco Night

Previously on BnHA: Nothing happened at all, because the manga was on break last week! Fortunately the anime had finally resumed after a billion years (estimation; exact length of time may be slightly off), so we had that to take the edge off in the meantime. Except we didn’t, because the anime also ended up going on break due to a rugby game or some shit. So that was nice. On a related note, when I die I’d like the Basement arc to lower me into my grave, so it can let me down one last time.

Anyway, Endeavor did some mentoring and gave Shouto and Kacchan a power-up assignment and told Deku to work on Air Force to help him master the fine control he needs for the Bloop. Then Fuyu called a week later and was all “HEY DAD, DINNER, OUR PLACE, TONIGHT, BRING THE KIDS.” And then as previously mentioned, we waited two whole fucking weeks and MY GOD, my body is ready, on to the new chapter we go!

Today on BnHA: Shouto, Katsuki, and Deku are cordially invited to Todosmith Farms for an evening of food and fun! They make it approximately six minutes into dinner before Natsu loses it and exits with more theatrics than a spurned reality TV show contestant. Baku and Deku spend the next hour being all “!!!” at each other back and forth, and whispering about how fucking dramatic the Todorokis are, which fully kills me and is my favorite thing ever to happen in the world. Deku then begins to guide Shouto through his personal healing process like fucking Mufasa booming at Simba from the heavens, and meanwhile Endeavor listens in while quietly kneeling before HIS DEAD SON’S PHOTOGRAPH, IN THE SHRINE THEY BUILT FOR SAID DEAD SON IN HIS BEDROOM, and sorrowfully wishing he could do more for his family. Anyways so I’m in ruins now, but otherwise fine. How are you?

(All comments are my unspoiled reactions from my initial readthrough of the chapter. I did a quick edit for grammar and clarity afterward, and added a few ETAs in the process, but aside from that there are no changes.)

well it’s Thursday morning, and I have just seen the picture of baby white-haired Touya because no one in this fandom knows how to fucking spoiler tag (and that’s on me too for browsing the BnHA tag on a Thursday; I know better, but I was just curious how this new group chat thing was working out), so here are my immediate thoughts

we never actually confirmed that the hair color correlates to their powers, huh. we just assumed. but come to think, there’s no reason why someone couldn’t have mom’s hair but dad’s quirk. it’s all Shouto’s fault for being a perfect 50/50 split and thus making everyone assume that THAT’S JUST HOW IT WORKS. damn you Shouto and your dramatic character design

anyways I tried not to look at the pic for too long -- once I realized what I was looking at, I averted my eyes -- but he does look like Dabi, I think. oh shit guys. it’s really fucking happening

and I also didn’t get a good enough look to determine whether this was a photo of Touya (that Deku or whoever happened to spot while visiting the Todochester Mystery House for the much-hyped dinner) or a flashback image (in which he is just standing really fucking still for some reason and staring directly at the camera), so I guess we’ll see. but anyways, Deku and Kacchan didn’t come all the way down to Todoroki taco night to not have their evening peppered with intricate family drama and reopened wounds and hysterical conspiracy theories, so you had better keep them goddamn entertained! lord knows the Todorokis don’t do small talk. this is literally their only way of spicing things up so their guests don’t die of sheer awkwardness while Endeavor sits in stony silence and Shouto just stuffs his face with soba all night

also aren’t we due some popularity poll results soon? just getting in all my random thoughts now before we dive in. anyways Horikoshi, so you know what I want to see now and you better deliver
