Pop Culture Builds 12: Marcille Donato (Dungeon Meshi)
We’re back with another set of characters from pop culture to convert to Pathfinder or Starfinder, and as always have to cut the list of suggestions down to 5, which is always disappointing because you guys always send in good ones!
In any case, our first one for this week comes from a fairly recent manga (and upcoming anime!) that is something of a hit here on tumblr and other parts of the internet! I of course speak of Dungeon Meshi, or Delicious in Dungeon!
Dungeon Meshi is set in a classic fantasy setting with magic and everything, but it is most notably centered around a mysterious magical superdungeon that has attracted adventurers from near and far to plumb it’s depths. One such party is Laios and Falin Toudin, Chilchuck Tims, a few other members that leave before or join later, and our subject for today: Marcille Donato.
Marcille is a half-elf, daughter to an unnamed mother and Lord Donato, a now-deceased tallman (the settings word for what we would consider “human”, since all the human-like ancestries are just considered different types of human), where her odd aging due to her mixed heritage caused her to have difficulty related to others. However, when reunited with her childhood friend, Falin, she joined the party to investigate the dungeon and apply her mixed magical expertise to better understanding it and the monsters within.
However, disaster struck, and Falin sacrificed herself to teleport the others away from a Red Dragon which had the party on the ropes. This leads to the main premise of the series: The party has to get back down to the same level quickly so they rescue Falin’s body from the stomach of the dragon before it’s digested. However, the only way to do that is to travel light, which means sourcing meals from the surroundings. In other words, cooking and eating monsters.
Despite this being entirely out of her comfort zone, Marcille agreed, and though she was heavily frustrated with Laios’ antics and the strangeness of the meals, she seemed to learn much more about the dungeon and the monsters within when travelling in this way as opposed to just blasting them whenever she saw them.
Eventually, they did rescue Falin’s body, and Marcille was able to revive her with a bit of dark magic, but little did the party know that this was just the beginning!
Marcille is canonically half elf and half tallman, which points to her being pretty solidly a half-elf by the traditional estimation. I wasn’t able to find any alternate racial traits that really seemed like they were a match, so go nuts if you find one appealing.
It took a while for me to find a good match for her class. You see, Marcille being from a Japanese manga, comes from a world where there is no clear distinction between arcane and divine magic, and so healing magic and high damage attacks are not split up between types of casting. At first I thought white mage arcanist to mix healing magic in with traditional arcane magic, but then I realized that several spells she uses early on are straight up not on the sorcerer/wizard spell list. Then I tried going for witch, but I wasn’t sure how to emulate her mix of heavy-duty fire magic into it, until an exceedingly simple solution hit me. The bonded witch ancestral archetype that is associated with half-elves! Not only does it replace the familiar with a bonded item, but said bonded item can cast a single spell per day from a short list based on the nature of the item. While Marcille has a staff, for the purposes of this build we’ll treat it as wand to get lots of powerful offensive spells. In addition to this, we give her the elements patron so she adds even more offensive magical spells to her arsenal.
While Marcille does experiment with and utilize dark magic in desperate situations, she’s not one to deliberately curse someone. As such, her hexes are typically on the more benevolent side, things like Ameliorating or Aura of Purity. Flight, Fortune, Healing and Ward are also good choices, as is Leshy Summoning as a way to represent her spell to create “familiars” from scratch. Moving on to major hexes, Major Healing and Major Ameliorating are natural picks, as is Regenerative Sinew, and Witch’s Charge is also nice for protecting allies. As far as Grand Hexes go, Life Giver is perhaps the one that fits best with her abilities.
Not a lot of Marcille’s activities point to any one specific feat, so I would pick hers based on those that will enhance her casting, such as Spell Focus (evocation), and so on. She does do a lot of dark rituals when she needs to, so also consider picking up Practiced Ritualist to help your occult rituals go off relatively safely.
Marcille’s patron and wand-staff give her a nice handful of blasting spells, and she is canonically a fire specialist, so I would recommend using their spells that she learns to mostly focus on her defensive buffs, utility, and healing, but don’t be afraid to pick up other options if they prove useful. Additionally, since Marcille sometimes uses dangerous magic, invest in picking up a few occult rituals so she can invoke powerful, but dangerous effects in necessary, such are resurrecting a friend using nearby dragon meat as a substitute for their missing flesh. Because there’s no way that would go wrong.
As a spellcaster, Marcille doesn’t carry a lot of heavy extra equipment, but she absolutely would carry any sort of useful non-weapon or armor magical gear she could find, as long as she thoroughly examines it first, of course.
If bonded witch doesn’t seem right to you, you always could go with my original plan of a white mage arcanist, or alternatively, a magaambya initiate arcanist and perhaps follow up with the magaambya arcanist prestige class, adding a handful of divine spells to their otherwise arcane arsenal, or even the unlettered arcanist if you want to play with exploits but prefer the witch spell list. Heck, you could even go havoker witch to have another way to heal, but also be a fiery blaster.
Even if you’re not trying to replicate her, this build is an interesting way to play a mage that tries their best to be able to do a little of everything, and combine healing and blasting.

Prompt 277
Danny would be pouting, but this? This is actually kind of hilarious. He’d be laughing his ass off if he could, but allows himself to shriek excitedly around the binky in his mouth. Jordan on the other hand has no such thing stopping him, letting out his own toddler cackle as something bursts into flames.
Their current caretaker- Clockwork’s nephew apparently, who is on babysitting duty for the next couple of decades- coos, and then they’re off again. Someone had apparently wanted their sort-of-Fraid-member to go to a meeting despite him informing them he’d be unavailable.
So of course he- and the three of them and Ms. Teekl the cat- just had to set the whole place on fire. You honestly can’t be that rude! It’s like, not exactly maternity leave, but something similar- don’t make fun of him he’s stuck with a toddler-brain right now!
(All three of them would’ve had completely toddler minds if not for the fact that they were partially made from ectoplasm)
Really, it was perfectly normal for them to set the building aflame and disappear into another dimension, even if maybe not for humans. Everyone knew you didn’t try to mess with a nesting Realms being! Especially if they weren’t fully Fraid yet. Honestly it’s all the idiots’ fault.

The victim-blamey direction new age spirituality has taken is a narcissist's wet dream. It's also bullshit.
NO: you are not disabled because you need to learn a karmic lesson.
NO: you did not choose to be born into an abusive family before incarnating.
NO: your trauma bonds are not soul bonds.
NO: you did not enter a "soul contract" with your abuser.
NO: you do not deserve to live in poverty because of a "past life."
NO: you do not go into "karmic debt" for standing up for yourself.
NO: the people pushing these narratives are not more spiritual than you; they don't "vibrate" at a "higher frequency" than you.
NO: your "past life" is not justification for people treating you like shit and hurting you in this one.
There is a reason people are pushing this narrative. There is a reason they so badly want you to believe the bad shit happening to you is something you chose and you deserve. It is text book victim blaming. If they can get you to blame yourself, for something you had absolutely no way to control, then they can get you to knuckle under and accept anything they do to you.
Don't knuckle under. Don't let people treat you like shit and say you asked for it before you were born. Don't let people convince you that things like poverty, mental illness, physical disability, and abuse are something you earned and that they won't stop until you learned your lesson, so just surrender.
"You can't control it, so just surrender," is the most pathetic bullshit I have ever heard.

thinking about how canonically the pevensie siblings are 13, 12, 10, and 8 in "the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe"
thinking about how lucy needed a stool to be able to get up onto her throne, how peter's sword is a little too large for him, how susan's bow is a little too difficult for her to pull back, how edmund's shield nearly covers his entire body.
thinking about the pevensie siblings and their first few months in narnia, getting to know their new people, and half the narnians sitting there horrified because WHAT have these literal babies been through to give them such traumatized, old eyes, and the other half of the narnians are preparing to adopt them, no it doesn't matter that they're the rules, they're children who are being put in charge of too many things, and if peter looks at the old man council long enough he's going to cry, so someone needs to give him paternal support while aslan is off doing Lion Jesus Stuff™️ and whoops oreius is being nice and encouraging and now he's adopted his kings and queens they're his kids now he doesn't make the rules.
just the narnians and the pevensies being thrown into it together, and just as the pevensies will do anything to protect their new kingdom, the narnians will do anything to protect their rules, because let's be honest, these children have no sense of self-preservation, and are far too overprotective of each other and their people to take into account their own safety, so a lot of battles it's just one of the pevensie siblings running headfirst into danger with oreius running after them because his kids are feral and don't know proper royalty manners and won't threatening old kings from different countries because they're being assholes and the last time one of them tried undermining the queens susan called him a self-righteous asshole and lucy tried to stab him SOMEONE help him corral his children please

Oh dear lord, my love Ghouls are you Clio jersey?????
Womb tattoos have different meanings for each drawing, the tree like is literally a family meaning, bringer of life and blood of ancestors. I'm giggling and imagine Price literally marking witch as his future baby momma.... Oh sweet heaving... (Can't blame this man, if I was him I would turn into a carpet just for this goodness)....
But there is a trick on this tatto womb in particular, bcs of the branch and name it would turn into a Suffering (?) one. Each ovulation getting witch itching and moody without prices presence or touch. Even worse if he could smell them....
(sorry your drable has, once again, broken me into a primitive stage)
Thanks for the wonderful writing and as always, may you land only knows abundance.
💕🌹💕🌹
I don't know who that is! So I am just Ghoul!! I absolutely adore womb tattoos I think they're so cute.
Unfortunately Price's mark is temporary. He's hijacking Witch's magic and re-writing it a little to work for him, and it's a painted spell so it will fade with wear. This is where I get to talk about Witch's magic and the way it interacts with Price. Witch's magic is heavy, it's the collective weight of generations of magic, which makes it extremely powerful but she often needs to use ingredients/tools to prop it up. She's still growing into her magic, so to speak. Doing too many things with her magic in one spell means more struts, more pillars to bear the load, so for her period she usually only focuses on 1 thing: keeping her magic/blood undetectable. Which leaves her with little room to manage symptoms and a little bit of a magical hangover.
Price knows magic, he is magic, and he's strong, stronger than Witch. So he acts as Atlas, holding up the world for her. He hardly feels the burden of it. He takes the magic she's worked on herself and tells it, "If you do these things (stop cramps, regulate emotions/hormones, just make Witch feel better) then I will carry your weight, look here's my name, burden me." And to a certain extent Witch's magic(the great line of witches that made her) said, "Alright but if you're signing on to be the rungs on Witch's ladder we expect you to stick around, we expect you to help carry this magic into the next generation."
So I think it absolutely struck Price when he saw the actual branches, the sigils and the signature on the dotted line of his deal, that Witch is going to be the mother of his children. It's all spelled out there in the magic wrapping around her, in the tattoo on her stomach, "John Price" added to the family tree.
And even though the mark fades with her period, you're right. She gets a little itchy the next time she's ovulating, her magic knocking on Price's door like "Hellooooo, you said you'd carry this burden so get to it, chop chop." Which really just leaves Witch a mess unable to think about anything proper and dripping while she tries to work. She has to take a week off. It doesn't help that as soon as Price smells her he gets a little.... off his head. He really tries to be a gentleman, but when Witch presses a little too close she gets bent over the nearest surface so Price can do his job.

I'm once again thinking about the missed opportunities to have Klaus and Kol bond more. Part of Klaus' whole motivation as a vampire is to get his werewolf part back and to finally be stronger than Mikael (sort of, I'm simplifying) both of which can be obtained by breaking his curse. But Kol? Kol is the only other original that can relate to having a fundamental part of themself ripped away from them. Klaus might not have known he was a werewolf until he killed, but he likely still had a connection he couldn't explain, as evident by him going to watch the wolves transform. And something he'd never been able to explain was now gone. He might only be able to realise the connection afterwards through its absence.
Kol though. Kol had grown up with magic, a connection to nature and the world around him in a way the rest of his siblings supposedly didn't have. And then he gets turned. And not only has his baby brother died, his father has just murdered him and the rest of his siblings after forcing them to drink human blood, which he'll later learn. Now, not only does he have to deal with the grief of Henrik's death and also his own but also the loss of his magic. A loss that's likely only worsened by Kol being a self-proclaimed child prodigy.
Kol is pretty much the only one who could understand what Klaus is going through with the binding of his wolf. We know Kol searched for ways to get his magic back/carry on practicing magic in the same way that Klaus was looking for ways to break his curse. While Klaus likely could still feel his wolf there despite being bound, Kol has no access to his magic anymore. I just think they should've been able to bond or connect over their shared loss of an intrinsic aspect of their selves at the hands of their parents
#TVD#The Mikaelsons#Kol Mikaelson#Klaus Mikaelson#briefly back on my the originals shouldve gotten to be a family goddammit and as someone from a big family im personally offended bs#i did right a lil snippet about them bonding over this that i havent posted yet for the joml verse but still think its an unexplored concep#need more witch!kol acknowledgement honestly. just need more content of my boy#anyway. klaus having a fascination with the moon and kol telling him about celestial events and how it affects his magic when theyre boys#klaus losing that connection to the moon feeling lost & extra tempermental feeling his wolf claw at its binds and vowing to break his curse#kol determined to get his magic back at any cost relating to that devasting loss and promising to help him find a loophole for his curse#kol who becomes extra reckless and determined when he learns that theres a way to break klaus' curse so maybe he can get his magic back too#that knowledge and recklessness combined with his loss of magic driving him to become the volatile vampire that we see#that leads to him being daggered repeatedly but that first time breaks something in that bond between him & klaus that never fully recovers#it makes him bitter and resentful only fueling his reckless behaviour particularly when there seems to be no leads on reclaiming his magic#that he becomes distant from his siblings in the process especially with finn still daggered but that distance only cements the idea#to his siblings that hes a danger and cant be trusted that he needs to be daggered if theyre to stay safe from mikael#the loss of his magic leading to his spiral as a vampire and him being ostracised by his family > actual tvdu kol canon#klaus being trapped in a room staring at the corpse of his little brother knowing he never repaired that relationship with him#and now he never can so he refuses to look away as penance and a reminder of his failings to his little brother#*edit: one of the reblogs on this post is the author of big bad wolf and honestly she does an amazing job at portraying the mikaelsons#as actual siblings if you havent read it its one of my favourites for characterisations but we need more 😭 i want it to be the norm

okay but in practical magic when sally and the aunt’s call women from all across town to help. the way they all come rushing, even the one sally never would have expected—they bring their brooms as asked, one brings her vacuum because it’s all she’s got.
“apparently her sister just got out of a bad relationship and the guy just will not leave her alone.”
the way they’re bright and laughing in the kitchen, sharing moments where they could have sworn they guessed the answer, where they knew something they shouldn’t have, FELT something they shouldn’t have, isn’t that odd? but the MOMENT they step foot into the room where gillian is and they see her they become quiet and they focus and they do what the owens family asks because they’re here to save this poor women they’re here to do what they can
“there’s a little bit of witch in all of us”
