i dont know how else to put this but to approach books (or any media, really) solely for the sake of relatability is genuinely incredibly heartbreaking......to have such little (or such unwilling) imaginative scope that you cannot stretch yourself, even marginally, in a different direction to what you’ve known or are used to knowing when the very POINT of stories is to transport you somewhere else, into someone else, so you can do just that........when fran lebowiz said a book “is supposed to be a door!” and george saunders said good prose “is like empathy training wheels” they were right!!! they were so so so SO absolutely entirely right!!!!!

Misfit AU: Occults & Supernaturals

So another thing I realized why I feel off about my Misfit AU is that I had no idea how to incorporate supernaturals and occults into the AU naturally. In the game, we could see there are supernaturals in terms of the detective characters having Fortes, there being a ghost in the chapter 1 sidequest, and the freaking Book of Death itself from the WDO vault (which may have been acquired by another area involved with magic). Since it seems like the supernatural does exist in Kanai Ward itself, I figure I can give more expansion to the magic system in Kanai Ward to make it more a part of the world in the AU.

Basically, there are practices of occults such as the supernatural connections with the ghosts, herbology, potionology, etc. It was most common outside of the city of Kanai Ward in the Outskirts, a village-like area on the outside of Kanai Ward. However, when Amaterasu planned to expand to their area, the Outskirts rejected them and it led to a war between the areas with Amaterasu and the Peacekeepers coming out on top. Now, occult practices are shunned in Kanai Ward, being feared for their dangerous magical feats and practices.

Yuma and Vivia are both from the Outskirts and moved into Kanai Ward after the war. Hence why Yuma has connections with the Book of Death (through his family’s blood) and Vivia has the most supernatural ability. It’ll be a good bonding moment when Vivia learns Yuma is from the Outskirts like him.

one of the funniest underrated parts of animorphs to me is the fact that time travel is a surprisingly common plot point, and yet it kinda gets glossed over because it almost never factors into the story in a way that actually matters. like. jake dies crossing the delaware but gets better on a technicality. there were aliens on earth at the same time as the dinosaurs but the asteroid got them too. time travel is a known phenomenon that the andalites have studied, but we don’t actually get any explanation for it because ax was distracted in class that day. everyone went back in time 24 hours and then died and forgot everything. two separate members of the main cast are different varieties of time anomalies and really the only effect it has on them is tobias getting over his family issues. jake is shown a prophetic vision of a world where the yeerks win and we just never get an explanation for what the fuck that was about. every time time travel is brought up, it contradicts at least one other time travel plotline. this is the series that taught me to never take time travel seriously in fiction and i can’t thank it enough for that. this is hilarious.
