New year new WIP that may or may not be finished this year lol
Returning with:
Halloween Cats by: cottonartaushop on Etsy (it's not letting me add the link I'm sorry)
I had to take a break from this last fall after losing the best void boy Fury unexpectedly. I think it'll be a nice memory when it's done though.
And adding in Dragons: A Field Guide by Climbing Goat Designs. Check their site out for some really cool space themed projects as well!!
I hope the start of the year has been kind to everyone 🖤🥺

There’s this character in Witch Hat Atelier, who has both his legs broken and was using a wheelchair, but his friends made him these magic crutches that help him levitate, walk, and fly with !
But I’m posting this because I just read this chapter and thought it’d be a cool design for Scar’s elytra !

NASA Inspires Your Crafty Creations for World Embroidery Day
It’s amazing what you can do with a little needle and thread! For #WorldEmbroideryDay, we asked what NASA imagery inspired you. You responded with a variety of embroidered creations, highlighting our different areas of study.
Here’s what we found:
Webb’s Carina Nebula
Tumblr media
Wendy Edwards, a project coordinator with Earth Science Data Systems at NASA, created this embroidered piece inspired by Webb’s Carina Nebula image. Captured in infrared light, this image revealed for the first time previously invisible areas of star birth. Credit: Wendy Edwards, NASA. Pattern credit: Clare Bray, Climbing Goat Designs
Wendy Edwards, a project coordinator with Earth Science Data Systems at NASA, first learned cross stitch in middle school where she had to pick rotating electives and cross stitch/embroidery was one of the options.  “When I look up to the stars and think about how incredibly, incomprehensibly big it is out there in the universe, I’m reminded that the universe isn’t ‘out there’ at all. We’re in it,” she said. Her latest piece focused on Webb’s image release of the Carina Nebula. The image showcased the telescope’s ability to peer through cosmic dust, shedding new light on how stars form.
Ocean Color Imagery: Exploring the North Caspian Sea
Tumblr media
Danielle Currie of Satellite Stitches created a piece inspired by the Caspian Sea, taken by NASA’s ocean color satellites. Credit: Danielle Currie/Satellite Stitches
Danielle Currie is an environmental professional who resides in New Brunswick, Canada. She began embroidering at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic as a hobby to take her mind off the stress of the unknown. Danielle’s piece is titled “46.69, 50.43,” named after the coordinates of the area of the northern Caspian Sea captured by LandSat8 in 2019.

Two Hubble Images of the Pillars of Creation, 1995 and 2015
Tumblr media
Melissa Cole of Star Stuff Stitching created an embroidery piece based on the Hubble image Pillars of Creation released in 1995. Credit: Melissa Cole, Star Stuff Stitching
Melissa Cole is an award-winning fiber artist from Philadelphia, PA, USA, inspired by the beauty and vastness of the universe. They began creating their own cross stitch patterns at 14, while living with their grandparents in rural Michigan, using colored pencils and graph paper.  The Pillars of Creation (Eagle Nebula, M16), released by the Hubble Telescope in 1995 when Melissa was just 11 years old, captured the imagination of a young person in a rural, religious setting, with limited access to science education.
Tumblr media
Lauren Wright Vartanian of the shop Neurons and Nebulas created this piece inspired by the Hubble Space Telescope’s 2015 25th anniversary re-capture of the Pillars of Creation. Credit:  Lauren Wright Vartanian, Neurons and Nebulas
Lauren Wright Vartanian of Guelph, Ontario Canada considers herself a huge space nerd. She’s a multidisciplinary artist who took up hand sewing after the birth of her daughter. She’s currently working on the illustrations for a science themed alphabet book, made entirely out of textile art. It is being published by Firefly Books and comes out in the fall of 2024. Lauren said she was enamored by the original Pillars image released by Hubble in 1995. When Hubble released a higher resolution capture in 2015, she fell in love even further! This is her tribute to those well-known images.
James Webb Telescope Captures Pillars of Creation
Tumblr media
Darci Lenker of Darci Lenker Art, created a rectangular version of Webb’s Pillars of Creation. Credit:  Darci Lenker of Darci Lenker Art
Darci Lenker of Norman, Oklahoma started embroidery in college more than 20 years ago, but mainly only used it as an embellishment for her other fiber works. In 2015, she started a daily embroidery project where she planned to do one one-inch circle of embroidery every day for a year.  She did a collection of miniature thread painted galaxies and nebulas for Science Museum Oklahoma in 2019. Lenker said she had previously embroidered the Hubble Telescope’s image of Pillars of Creation and was excited to see the new Webb Telescope image of the same thing. Lenker could not wait to stitch the same piece with bolder, more vivid colors.
Milky Way
Tumblr media
Darci Lenker of Darci Lenker Art was inspired by NASA’s imaging of the Milky Way Galaxy. Credit: Darci Lenker
In this piece, Lenker became inspired by the Milky Way Galaxy, which is organized into spiral arms of giant stars that illuminate interstellar gas and dust. The Sun is in a finger called the Orion Spur.
The Cosmic Microwave Background
Tumblr media
This image shows an embroidery design based on the cosmic microwave background, created by Jessica Campbell, who runs Astrostitches. Inside a tan wooden frame, a colorful oval is stitched onto a black background in shades of blue, green, yellow, and a little bit of red. Credit: Jessica Campbell/ Astrostitches
Jessica Campbell obtained her PhD in astrophysics from the University of Toronto studying interstellar dust and magnetic fields in the Milky Way Galaxy. Jessica promptly taught herself how to cross-stitch in March 2020 and has since enjoyed turning astronomical observations into realistic cross-stitches. Her piece was inspired by the cosmic microwave background, which displays the oldest light in the universe.

GISSTEMP: NASA’s Yearly Temperature Release
Tumblr media
Katy Mersmann, a NASA social media specialist, created this embroidered piece based on NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) global annual temperature record. Earth’s average surface temperature in 2020 tied with 2016 as the warmest year on record. Credit: Katy Mersmann, NASA
Katy Mersmann is a social media specialist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. She started embroidering when she was in graduate school. Many of her pieces are inspired by her work as a communicator. With climate data in particular, she was inspired by the researchers who are doing the work to understand how the planet is changing. The GISTEMP piece above is based on a data visualization of 2020 global temperature anomalies, still currently tied for the warmest year on record.
In addition to embroidery, NASA continues to inspire art in all forms. Check out other creative takes with Landsat Crafts and the James Webb Space telescope public art gallery.

Here comes another fakemon line! SPLIT EVO once again because I'm a sucker for those :DD I've gotta be honest - I'm not much of a fan of Galarian Rapidash, I was hoping for something a bit more mystical-feeling, but I also didn't feel like doing a redesign of the regionals…so I decided to make my own Unicorns instead!
MOOMBLE (Moon/Nimble) - Fairy/Normal type STELLAROG (Stella = Star / Jednorog = Unicorn) - Fairy/Steel type CLIIMOROG (Climb/Jednorog) - Rock/Fairy type
Stellarog and Climorog are supposed to showcase the past and the present takes on Unicorns, while still both bearing common traditional traits such as the cloven hooves in their design. Climorog is inspired by medieval goat-like depictions of Unicorns while Stellarog is inspired by our modern picture of Unicorns! Moomble's name is also a bit of an homage to the Moomins, as its face reminded me a lot of the Moomin trolls :D
Here's the family alltogether!

some fakemon starters i made teehee! pokedex entries and stuff below :] Who would you choose?
Tumblr media
Tanootlet - Leaf Mask Pokemon - Grass Type
Etymology: Tanuki + raccoon + nutlet (a small nut or seed)
Dex: Long ago, these pokemon were considered pests and driven away into hiding. Because of their rarity today, some say coming across a Tanootlet brings good luck. Tanootlets are too curious for their own good, sometimes getting into trouble.
Tumblr media
Sparkid - Goat Pokemon - Fire Type
Etymology: Spark or spar + kid (baby goat)
Dex: Sparkid’s hooves and horns often light up red hot, casting fiery sparks in the air when climbing cliffs or headbutting trees. It loves play fighting with others of its kind, the clashing of their horns can make a beautiful light show of flames.
Tumblr media
Skipalisk - Bubble Lizard Pokemon - Water Type
Etymology: Skip or skipper + pal + basilisk
Dex: Skipalisk is determined and focused when it comes to running and leaping, yet it is cautious when it comes to its safety, forming a goggle-like water bubble to protect its eyes. It runs through the water of ponds and shallow beaches to strengthen its little legs.
I thought this would be a quick and easy thing but designing them took like.. a few weeks.. (turns into a roach and skuttles away)

I made Webby and the Lords in Black on Sims 4 a while ago:
Here’s Wiggly:
Tumblr media
I was really proud of his hair. I also gave every Lord and Webby their own special room/building, so here’s Wiggly’s:
Tumblr media
Decorating isn’t my strong suit but his room was the most fun to design, I was thinking mostly of a grand palace, mostly in green, with a fireplace and a table with thrones for him and his siblings to meet at - notice the white throne for Webby?
Here’s Pokey:
Tumblr media
I couldn’t find a beret so I went for a Phantom of the Opera style fedora, but the eyes I found were PERFECT (side note - they are all spell casters because that made the most sense considering their godly powers). Here’s Pokey’s room:
Tumblr media
I’ll be honest, I accidentally mostly forgot to give him instruments, my idea for this room was to explore his different interests because he spends most of TGWDLM trying to figure out what people want, and that’s reflected in the different activities in his room. I also gave him cool wallpaper that reminded me of a beehive as a cute nod to that - I think I gave him a violin in the end that you can only really see from a different angle.
Here’s Tinky:
Tumblr media
My inspiration for Tinky’s look here was anime characters, much like in NPMD, but I found the perfect goat eyes for him that totally add to his look. Here’s Tinky’s room:
Tumblr media
I gave Tinky every clock I could find, but the vibes of the room were definitely meant to replicate the cube with insane patterns meant to drive someone mad; there’s a rock climbing wall in the corner that I think alludes to Tinky’s feral energy.
Here’s Blinky:
Tumblr media
I’ll be honest; this hairstyle for Blinky was what inspired me to recreate the eldritch siblings on the Sims, it just seemed perfect, and of course I made his eyes massive so he can have a good look at everyone. The sunglasses also seemed pretty accurate to me. Here’s Blinky’s room:
Tumblr media
My idea for this room was to give Blinky things to watch - so there’s loads of tvs, a camera, comfy chairs and even spy tech in a corner in case shoes get too unrealistic for him. A small detail that I wanted to point out is that in every room for a Lord, I have placed lava lamps on their bedside tables that match their colours, funnily enough I just found them in the game anyway and they were a perfect fit.
Here’s Nibbly:
Tumblr media
A fluffy jacket, pigtails and a big mouth, what else do you need for an accurate Nibbly? I love that jacket, I wish I owned it in real life. Here‘s Nibbly’s room:
Tumblr media
Okay, this is essentially a fancy kitchen with a cupcake machine, a wardrobe, a vanity and a bed - I ran out of ideas here. Still, I think it’s cute and I think Nibbly would like it if he ever got midnight food cravings. This room could save lives.
Finally, here’s Webby:
Tumblr media
I honestly think that Webby is the most accurate, I was looking at reference images for all of them but that dress seems like it’s been ripped right from the screen, not to mention her hair. I’m proud of this Webby, I can sleep well at night knowing I’ve at least done her justice. Here’s Webby’s room:
Tumblr media
I was definitely going for ‘ethereal’ when I designed this room, with a chill, relaxing vibe - what could be more relaxing than loads of fairy lights? I also made it a priority to give Webby plants to show that she is encouraging new life instead of crushing it like her brothers - the larger amount of windows and lights also are meant to suggest that she’s a kinder, more moral/good person.
If you like my recreations, they are all together on the Sims gallery, just search for the Lords in Black and Webby or type in my EA ID, sparklefishkatie (shameless self-promotion) because I’ve put a lot of stuff on there over the years. Now; these guys are quite old, you might have to scroll back to find them, and I can’t actually remember if I put their rooms on the gallery, if I didn’t please let me know if you want them because I’ll absolutely put them up. If you’ve read to the bottom of this post, you’re the best, thanks a lot and please download these characters if you play Sims 4! 💕

media i think the pjo cast would be into
percy : h2o + mako mermaids (he religously makes stelle watch them with him once she's older) , he also really likes teen beach movie + austin & ally (reminds him of him and annabeth). he's a great spiderman fan too, had a hyperfix on it as a kid and it came back SUPER STRONG when atsv was released, he was devastated when he couldn't infodump annabeth about it
annabeth : THE SIMS !!!! she got her dad to buy her all the DLCs of the sims 4 as compensation for how he treated her. i think she would also love the new york times games if they were more dyslexia friendly (you know when she gets absolutely furious at the sphynx in tbotl bc the questions are stupid? that's how she'd react to connection categories)
grover : he would love animal crossing new leaf and new horizons so much! i also think he would lend happy home designer to annabeth but she would get frustrated at how little you can personalise the houses. he also really likes deltarune and the concept of goat boy helps blue mc with single-mother reminds him of him and percy
nico : pokemon, but specifically the card game. will tries to introduce him to the game many times but nico is horrible at managing a console so after lots of frustration he goes "i wish it came it card format" and will is just like "OH!" he also really likes animation because he was alive during its beginnings, so i think he could be just familiar enough with it but not enough not to be super excited with every one of the new techniques that have been developed
rachel : she has watched tangled many many times. obviously she has a devianart / tumblr account. huge huge fan of the spiderverse movies (was the one percy infodumped about it) and adventure time (the opening of fionna & cake is her morning alarm). she is also a loona stan (after becoming friends with annabeth she asked for help figuring out the loonaverse and accidentally got annabeth into them as well, but rachel is more into the music while annabeth just focus on the lore)
tyson : when i was maybe 8 i had this nintendo game about horse riding that i am sure he would love. ALSO MLP!!! twilight reminds him of annabeth!!
will : TRIGUN !!!! SOMEONE LET THIS BOY READ TRIMAX!!! + he loved hannah montana, he still owns the cds and the climb is his favorite song.
bianca : would have loved christian girl k-pop i just know
clarisse : she grew up watching shonen anime. i don't watch a lot of shonen but i'm personally gonna say she likes one piece so when she got the quest on tsom a part of her kept going "omg one piece reference." she also thinks jojo's is the most hilarious piece of media to ever exist.

This is slightly off-theme for you, but: *not* horror fantasy *adventures* by small companies, for systems with combat? (Compatibility doesn't really matter; creatures can be tweaked from existing and/or created.) Finding games has become easier than adventures, and most adventures I find are on the horror side of things (The Isle, etc.). Thanks/apologies for going off theme!
Theme: Non-Horror Fantasy Combat Adventures.
Hello there! I have less familiarity with adventures, but I follow some folks on Itch who compile some very useful collections. I noticed that in many cases these collections included dungeon crawls or system agnostic settings, so I hope you find these to be useful!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mount Zorgoth, by Highland Paranormal Society.
Zorgoth, the Cyclops godling rules from the highest peak. His star magic keeps the world below shrouded in darkness! Can the spell be broken?
This is a one-page mountain-climbing adventure with a goofy look to it and a light-hearted tone. There is no named system for which this adventure appears to be designed for, and as a result there aren’t any stats for the monsters that show up - such as the Slug Shepard and his 2d4 spider goats. But for a one-page rpg there’s certainly a lot you can glean based off of the different locations you can go to. I think this might be a fun game to try with Brave Zenith, as tone-wise both games feel a little bit goofy.
Welcome to Candy Mountain, by cog5games.
Created centuries ago with dark magics informed by gluttony, cast by a wizard who has since lost interest, Candy Mountain stands as a blemish of sweetness protruding from an otherwise bland countryside. The inhabitants of the mountain, who were also affected by the strange enchantment, went about their daily lives. Until…
Side with the Candy Crone and summon a gargantuan Lemon Titan to crush the Sugar Queen. Or! Bow to the Sugar Queen and stop the Candy Crone from exacting her revenge. Or! Forget all that and seek out a source of pure sugar crystals for Doctor Xaraqus and complete the lens of the temporal telescope.
There are honestly a lot of Troika supplements that you would probably find interesting to flip through in your search for non-horror adventures. Troika is a science-fantasy multiversal ttrpg, so there doesn’t have to be a lot of cohesion in terms of setting details. This also means that while not every Troika supplement may work for you, there’s bound to be something out there that does! If you want to check out more troika adventures, you could also look at the Troika! Pamphlet Adventure Jam that this game was submitted to.
Flowers Beneath The Mountain, by BPB Games.
A Casual Stroll Through a Wondrous Locale. Time to Hit the Road!
Flowers Beneath the Mountain is a licensed adventure for Ryuutama. Designed as an evocative introductory adventure for new players who want to explore a region that has more magic and whimsy than the standard setting, Flowers Beneath the Mountain is a simple adventure that provides useful information to help veteran or first time Ryuujin to fill out sheets on their own.
I know Ryuutama has a reputation for being a bit on the cozier side, so I expect this adventure to be fantastic and cute, even if there are monsters for you to fight. The game also comes with tokens for you to use on a Virtual Tabletop of your choice, if you are looking for that to add to your game!
Almanac of Lost Places, by Fantastic Jean.
A mountain coveted by rival kingdoms. A city where information is not a synonym of truth. The ruins of a civilisation far from being abandoned. A valley bending reality to protect itself from exploitation.
This is a loose outline of a number of places with conflicts waiting to be expanded upon. The Almanac holds story seeds: how you describe people and places, and how your players decide to respond will determine what conflicts they find themselves in, which allies they make, and what powers they will bear witness to. There's potential for horror, but I don't think this setting is beholden to it. I’m also wondering if perhaps combining this with something like the Big List of RPG Plots would give you enough to get a story in motion.
Overdue! by seedling.
In this system-agnostic game in a fantasy world, the players are all agents of the Library, sworn to carry out its will.  In this one-shot they can become entangled in book-themed royal intrigue, outwit a dragon who has taken control of all scientific journals, save the kingdom, and, most importantly, retrieve an overdue library book.
This is a system-agnostic dungeon-like adventure that looks to be less focused on combat, but I have a feeling that if you wanted to involve some combat, you could likely change some of the encounters within the game without necessarily having to change the core premise of the adventure.

GET CREATURE'D >:D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It took a bit longer to design a proper creature form for the Jebil, heres an earlier design that I think absolutely rocks but is not the vibe im going for:
Tumblr media
BIG OL PAWS!!!!
I feel like the newer design fits better. For Jevil, I figured it could easily climb trees and using its tiny wings, glide from tree to tree. It would also have a prehensile tail like some monkeys do. Why the hooves? erm. idk. felt like it fit? and ik theres goats with hooves that are too skilled at climbing mountains. I believe thats where they get their name:
MOUNTAIN GOAT.
so erm yeah. Jevil creature would also be omnivorous methinks. Can live almost anywhere.
As for Spamton, big feathered beast go skree!! Vibrant colored raptor-like creature. Last of its kind, or failed lab experiment? who knows! go wild go crazy. Colors would be based on the spamton neo design hehe

For the Actor AU, how did they feel abt the canon heroes' outfits? If they could, how would they have modified them?
Marinette: Basic as fuck! It looks like I’m wearing footie pajamas! If I were in charge of my costume, I’d give myself a full-on punk look because Ladybug’s are some badass motherfuckers. Oh, and boots that have soles equipped with a shock-absorbing cushion, and a heel that contains a reinforced spring to soften the shock whenever I land. And… Maybe a backpack shaped like ladybug wings to hold my Lucky Charms and anything I need to collect for my plan.
Adrien: Less leather! That stuff shrinks, and a full leather bodysuit is not comfortable. Also, because of the cat holders’ powers, it would be cool if heroes had some sort of medical supplies on them just in case, like stored in a utility belt. And I’m with Mari, those boots sound badass. What else?… Oh, definitely add some more color instead of just basic black.
Alya: Well, the Fox doesn’t seem like a combative hero due to the powers. I see Rena Rouge as a distraction, really, so her outfit wouldn’t be one of those “ready for battle” types. Here’s what I’m thinking, one of those noir-film type outfits. The hat covers my face a bit to give me an air of mystery, and the outfit would look almost casual that no villain would suspect me.
Nino: I mean… Carapace’s look is cool. It’s alright. I’m liking the goggles, but… I’d prefer if he had armor. He’s the fucking turtle hero! He should be ready to take any blow that a villain sends his way!
Rose: Where to begin? Look, you all know me; I love pink more than the next guy, but… Sometimes too much is too much. The Pig Miraculous strikes me as… More farmhand than ballerina. Yee, I know, the heroes come with a tambourine, but come on! While I do love the skirt, I’d trade it in for overalls, either shorts or a skirt. Oh, and add some black in there, too. Daizzi has a black circle around his eye, let him be represented!
Juleka: Studded jacket. That is all.
Luka: Oh, honey, either give me a hood so I can look like a cobra or get the fuck away from me with that outfit.
Myléne: The mouse strikes me as more of the elegant type, I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s the pastel pink mixed with the grey, but I see Polymouse wearing skirts over Pigella. But, that’s just my opinion.
Ivan: Honestly, I’m fine with the canon design for Minotaurox. Yeah, he’s got pockets and padding, I-I like it. And if you show me a better design, I’ll happily take a look at it.
Marc: … I think all of the effort went into making Rooster Bold’s costume. He’s got rooster hair, the little tallons on the back of his boots, and a fucking tailcoat! He and Mayura are the only ones to have tailcoats! I’m not complaining, though. I… I actually like it, but it is a nightmare putting on and taking off that wig.
Nathaniel: Well, I can say I sort of know how some of the girls feel, because that suit was tight as hell! You could see my hip dip! Also, I would’ve liked to have a different hairstyle and maybe some color, because I am the only male redhead around for miles. Oh, and climbing boots becuase, I’m a goat, duh.
Alix: … Do I need to say it? Okay, give me some active wear! I’m traveling through a shit ton of different timelines! I need someone sporty and active when I’m on the go. Also, I’ll need a backpack like Marinette.
Kim: Not hearing any complaints from me! I liked Roi Singe, but being Scarlet Beetle is way cooler!
Max: The glasses can easily come off. What I need is a high collar or a bandana that can cover the lower half of my face in case my glasses become askew or someone is able to place my identity because all I have on my face are some stupid glasses! God, I’m so glad I’m doing this new show now.
Chloé: Oh, I just want wings.
Zoé: Same.
Sabrina: Can mine just not look like my clothes, please?! I’ll take whatever, just not that!
Kagami: I would prefer if I had some form of armor and not a spandex bodysuit. It would need to be lightweight but also durable to allow me to travel faster, of course.

I'm sure y'all know how I've preached to the choir about Yomi dying his hair from blue to red as a conscious choice to oppose Yakou cause they're the bitter exes of all time, but I've got another card up my sleeve. Ya see, there's another part of his character design that's blue. The bottom of his shoes! Ya wouldn't really think it to be important, cause no one really pays attention to shoes these days (*stares blankly at the camera*), but I disagree! His shoes are pretty eye-catching in his splash art, purposefully aimed to show off the neon blue soles.
Tumblr media
Boy, I sure hope this very specific design choice doesn't get emphasized at a very specific point in the ga-
Tumblr media
Oh.
But yeah, if ya think about it, the only part of his design staying blue being the bottom of his shoes adds more layers of hate onto their dynamic. In this exact moment, Yakou is literally below Yomi. Nothing but a bug to be crushed beneath the peacekeeper director's weight. Dirt to be scraped across the pavement and washed away in the endless rain. Pure, unfiltered hatred.
Yomi probably subconsciously scrapes his feet across the ground like an angered bull when standing still sometimes. It's a habit. A reminder to himself that he is the protector of Kanai Ward. Since Yakou refused to climb to the heights of Amaterasu and stayed in the grimy depths of the crime-ridden city, Yomi aptly treats him like the garbage he finds his home in.
Anyway, go vote for the bitter exes in the shipping poll! I've offered to record a full cover of No Children by The Mountain Goats if they are victorious!

The Brief Mystery of the Escape from Storage Hold B
“Well, I’m out of ideas,” said my new shipmate, flipping a blue-black tentacle. He was the pointy-headed variety of Strongarm, looking more like a squid than an octopus, and I wasn’t honestly sure if that made him a different species or not. All that mattered today was that he was in charge of the cargo in this room, which kept getting out of its pen. One had apparently even made it down the hallway before he caught up with a net.
“You’re sure this species can’t teleport or anything like that?” I asked as I looked through the clear walls at the four-legged beasties. I’d seen enough already in my jaunt through the galaxy that I wasn’t ruling anything out. These creatures had long necks and stringy orange fur that I could swear moved on its own. Terrier-sized llamas with sea anemone jackets.
“If they can teleport, we are not getting paid enough to transport them,” the squiddy guy said. What was his name? Merv? Right, Mur.
“At least they’re only going for the food,” I said. “No gaps in the walls that I can see.” I paced around the enclosure, where the handful of animals perked up and came to watch me. “The roof doesn’t lift off, does it?”
Mur scoffed, a flappy noise that was much funnier to me than I let on. “Not likely. It’s clamped on tight, and how would they get up there anyway? They might as well be squeezing through the air holes.”
“Which air— Oh, these things? These are pretty big.” I gave the rectangular cutouts an appraising stare. High off the ground or not, they were definitely big enough for a properly motivated small creature to fit through. But these critters were shin-height, and the vents were almost too high for me to reach.
“The walls are not climbable,” Mur declared, curling three tentacles in irritation. “We’ve used this pen for climbing animals before; it’s designed on the molecular level to make them slide off. Even the suction cup sticky types. And again, if they can teleport or levitate or something, then the people who engaged our services are going to get a big fat Liar’s Fee on their bill.”
“How high can they jump?” I asked. Waggling fingers at the orange llama-things, I crouched for a closer look. Two big ones waddled over on stiff legs while a smaller one hopped erratically, kicking its feet up like an excited rabbit.
“Not that high, surely.”
The little one ramped up to full zoomies, dashing about in a circle.
“Just how sure are you?” I asked. As I stood back up, the little orange creature jumped off the side of another one instead of going around, knocking it over with a complaining bleat.
These aren’t space llamas, I thought. These are space goats.
The fallen one got back onto its feet with the improbable help of its fur — yeah, that was definitely a field of tentacles instead of hair.
Mur wove his own tentacles together. “There’s no way.”
“I’ll bet you they’re getting out the vents,” I said, rejoining him. “I have seen animals like this on my planet reach some impressive heights. What do people wager on this ship? Money, food, entertainment?”
He gave me a speculative look. “Say more about that last one.”
“If I’m wrong, I’ll stand on a table and sing a space shanty.”
“Done. How to you expect to prove it?”
“Firstly, do you guys really not have a camera in this storage hold? I thought that was standard for everything but the private quarters.”
Mur gave a bubbling sigh and wrapped a tentacle around the back of his pointy head, gesturing upward with another. “We have one. It’s broken. Don’t ask whose fault it is. We’re going to get it fixed soon.”
“What about a handheld?” I asked, pulling out mine and unfolding it. “Wide screen and an adhesive function; if we leave the door open, I can stick it where we can watch from the hallway.”
“Sure. Why not. At least we’ll get some entertainment at mealtime.”
While I set up the camera with a wide focus, Mur got out the food for the space goats. This immediately drew their attention. They all clustered on that side of the pen, the smaller ones bouncing in place with no regard for whether they landed on floor or friend.
Mur dumped a small container of food onto the floor: little green nubbins of some sort. Could have been peas, frogs, or erasers. The space goats clearly liked them.
“Oh no,” Mur said theatrically. “I have spilled food. I will have to get something to clean it up. I’d better go do that.” He shoved the rest back into the storage cabinet, closed it, then slapped his way to the exit.
I moved out of sight, watching the camera. He had barely cleared the doorway when the smallest three got running starts around the enclosure, sprang up at an angle, and slid across the wall like figure skaters. The first one to reach a vent dove through it with all the smoothness of a prize-winning pole vaunter. The second was partway through when the third slammed into it. Both complained; one fell to the floor of the pen; the other used its sea-anemone fur to grasp the edge of the hole and pull itself through.
The second one joined the first in snorffling up food while the third got another running start.
I looked at Mur.
“Ugggh,” he said, pressing tentacles across his face. “I hate animal cargo.”
“Do we need gloves or anything to catch them?” I asked. “They look poisonous.”
“If so, no one’s told me that either. No, we can just use the nets. We’d better hurry before they get out of the room.”
“Right.” I put away my handheld and followed him back in, with the door shutting behind us as the five (!) creatures finished the last of the food.
It was an excitable chase that followed, but a successful one. No troublesome space goats made it out to wreak havoc on the rest of the ship. I helped Mur glue mesh over the vents, salvaged from food packaging and probably (probably) strong enough to resist impact from hungry beasties.
The promised entertainment at mealtime was fun. I took pity on Mur and sang along with him, to the enjoyment of the rest of the crew. Luckily we knew at least one space shanty in common.
Then someone else wanted a go, and it became a rollicking celebration. Turns out there are many songs about troublesome animals, and given that a couple of the crewmembers were good with lyrics, soon there was one more.
“I’ve got to write this down,” I said. “There are people back home who’d love it. Say, have you heard the ballad of Stabby the Roomba?”
Even the captain sang along with that one. It was a long time before we got back to our duties, but no one complained.

I’m exploring backstory for the book that just came out. There are many adventures to be had!

Labours of the Living
Finwë found her hidden away, in the alcove she retreated to when her own working rooms were grown tiresome to her eyes.
It did not surprise Míriel. Finwë had always had a talent for finding her, a skill honed through many years; even, and most particularly, when Míriel sought an escape. He loved her too well to want her lonesome, and knew her to well to think she should always be given her way in living engrossed in her work.
“My lady, my bright lady, here I find you at last,” he said, and came upon the secret curve of the staircase like a vision of himself. Míriel saw him as he was, tall and well-braided, the darkness of his eyes gleaming for her in the light of the high window; for a moment a stranger, a new and beloved thing.
Underneath the heartbeat of her own breast another one jumped, calling to her, thrilled at the sight.
Your father, she told her child, agreeing. Let one of them delight in the world and in Finwë particularly, when she was too weary for it. That was what children were for, joy-making and living stores of joy - so she was told. Your high-hearted father, who shall love you better than all things.
Finwë loved her so well. Nearly as much as the promise of their child; a curious loss of preeminence for Míriel, who understood him perfectly.
“Such hurry, my lady,” Finwë-king teased, jumping up the steps around one pyramid of bolts of brocade like he had when jumping the lake-stone path over the waters of Cuiviénen to visit the dwellings of Míriel, where she had kept her wild goats and first mastered the spindle. “That is princely garment that you have wrought lately, for a prince in many ages.”
“Or many princes, of many ages,” said Míriel.
She looked down at her hand upon the needle, the brilliant floss strung through, the hoop in her lap and the organized disorder of fabrics around her and that same strangeness rose like sea-sickness, the hungry thing inside her restless and small, wanting always to know, know, know what it saw through her eyes.
It wearied her spirit. And the flesh was weary enough as was. It had been a great deal of baskets and bolts of fabric to carry, even if it was but a fraction of what she was working upon; and she was weary still after the climb, though Telperion’s light upon the window beside her had fractured in many changing angles since first she arrived. She had lost precious time with it; the child delighted in the spectrum of it, and her eyes, too, were passionate about colour, heavy enough to grow distracted.
Míriel of the needle with her strong will distracted from her craft! It had not happened before, even when she had been wounded, cold and famished; it happened far too often now. Much had grown tiresome to Míriel, as her child rounded her belly, her most ambitious project kicking at her bowels and sending her constant reveries of strong, flashing impressions.
She made a wardrobe entire: court robes and sturdy traveling layers knitted in complicated patterns, thin shifts for sleep of beautifully embroidered satin. Hats in fashion not yet invented, caps and veils and nets, stitched with golden coins and intricate lacework in gold-thread. Aprons of leather-work, embossed so a distracted craftsman might pass his fingertips over the designs as they thought.
The flaming of a poppy, and the blossoming of a new flame; the sweet purple-reds of the bougainvillea. Linen, velvet, brocade and samite, all of it red, and red, and more red. Her child saw nothing else, in the haven of her womb; that was all it knew to love. Míriel found many variety of it among the fabrics of her stores, dyed others, to her own perfect demands.
Not easy, to stand before the vats with the shifting paddles, moving cotton in water with heavy, forceful arms; and less so, when her ankles so ached and her back complained. Her shoulders ached still after the long labour of her early pregnancy. But Míriel would have no aid, nor even from her best apprentices. She had a reverie in mind, a dream that was no dream, the crafter’s perfect vision of the work to finish; and she meant for it to be impeccable, for it to last.
Her king knelt before her on the cold harshness of the stone, and kissed her hands affectionately, peering down to look at the work on the hoop.
“That shall certainly be marvelous,” Finwë agreed,  “Many marvels for our children shall come from your hand; yet, Míriel, do not forego sleep for it! Thou art crafting many masterpieces at once.”
His smile was knowing, tender around the eyes. It suited him: the care he took with his lady, the last light before the Mingling curling around the stay hairs that escaped his crown. Prickly, goading and laughing and bold and full of wonder like a self-sustaining and warming fire: that was as she liked him best, the chieftain and the craftsmen she loved, her old friend from the old world.
Never had she resented him any softness, nothing of the gentleness that was in him. It had been pleasure, at first, how swiftly he nurtured it, beside his eagerness for the widening of their close and secretive family, the dear circle of their arms around one another; but she could not return it.
So much of Tírion-upon-Tuna was made exactly to his liking, from the materials he thought best, arranged in the angles of his thinking. Míriel loved the city so well. It was not Tírion’s fault Míriel was too weary to stomach the sight of it well, nor her husband’s tenderness.
She took his hands, that he might feel the child kicking inside her; and then took them, so he might help her down the steep path of her own devising.

Fëanáro’s rooms had gathered dust for many Ages, when at last Míriel returned to life, committed again to life. He had taken much with himself on his exile to the far northern fortress of Formenos, and among his many works and treasures had been the full collection of Míriel’s works: all his wardrobe, what of it had not been passed on to his sons as they grew.
Míriel knew this: she had woven him garbed with the long tunics of her own make, raising a torch and declaring a fell promise, his sons arrayed around him likewise: in capes, and hats, and embroidered robes of rich, blood-dark crimson. She did not look for her son in the apartments where he had been young and unhappy, nor the rooms set aside for the children he begot in love - did not open drawers, or press her mouth against worn fabrics made into paler shades by layers of dust through the Ages.
Nothing remained. He was not loved now, her son; the rooms were barred and barren, so they might not be destroyed in wrathful grief by the righteous.
The palace of Tírion was much changed. There were rooms enclosed and airless, like the chambers and cairns of stone where the dead had been buried on the journey out of Cuiviénen. There was Indis’ hand in the leveling of high stone walls and the raising of galleries crowned and surrounded in glass; Indis’ hand who had drawn the mezzanines, and decided on the colour of upholstery, the design of the candlesticks.
And Finwë, in all things Finwë’s fondness for soft fabrics and bold colours, his liking for meadows with many moss-covered boulders set together for conversation matured into a tendency for low tables, and vast rooms with many seats.
Míriel’s own marks remained, for they had been made to endure unseen: curling staircases; cunning doorways, alcoves with stained glass windows and a seat carved into the parapet, the sort of places a distracted broideress might retreat to work.
Some of the places had been plainly found. Childish, painstaking scratches lined the windowsills, tengwar in a faltering fashion, still inventing itself, scratching the first attempts. A quiet place, made in ancient times.
How young she had felt, sketching the project of it upon Finwë’s blueprints! Old, and forgotten; for no children ran now, joyful or wretched, through the secret hallways of Tírion’s great palace.
There and only then did Míriel raise her hand to lay over her belly, which had so shuddering with life when last she stood in her quiet hideout; only then did she weep, Þerindë of the needle, as her child had wept in secret against the sleeves she had dyed and sewn and embroidered with the last of her last life.
