fathers day is just. so rough because nine really shouldn't bring rose back to the day her father died, but he does, twice. he knows how tempting time travel is to fix mistakes but he wants to indulge her in ways he can't indulge himself. because hes been there-- to the titanic, to krakatoa, trying to save people's lives, probably failing every time if him being at JFKs assassination is anything to go by. hes furious when she interferes, calls her names, walks out on her, but only because hes reminded of his own foolish attempts (and ultimate failures) to save the doomed.
but throughout all of that he still-- still-- does his best to find a way out without pete having to die again. he wants her to be able to succeed, wants to prove that someone can be saved in these scenarios. it really makes his "just this once, everybody lives" so much more impactful because at that point they're in the middle of an air raid in the middle of a world war, and by all time logic none of those people should have lived. but they did.

for y'all saying Star Beast would've been torn apart if it was a Chibnall era episode: true!
however
Chibnall would never have been brave enough to make the entire plot revolve around being trans (or if he did, it would be shallow and sketched over) and that, I think, is why he was such a stand-out writer in his bad-ness
Doctor Who is cheesy and corny and sometimes downright bad, but the important thing is that it's brave and it's kind and Chibnall barely touched the surface of that.
I'm one of RTD's number 1 critics. I hate some of the shit he's written and I resent what he did with Ten towards the end of his tenure and anyone who knows me knows that I believe End of Time was the single worst regeneration story ever written.
But Chibnall wrote some absolutely unforgivable centrist-ass shit. The most cowardly, 'safe' writing.
And don't get me wrong, it wasn't all his fault! The director also sucked! The actors looked like they had no idea what they were doing half the time! Chibnall's era had no idea what to do with its characters for most of the episodes! RTD has many many flaws but at least his characters feel like people.
IDK I love Thirteen but Chibnall is an objectively bad writer, at least in the Whoniverse. His shitty signature is evident in the Torchwood episodes he wrote, too. I think it ultimately boiled down to love -- the love for DW and everything it stood for just wasn't there in Chibnall's writing compared to RTD and Moffat.
tl;dr Star Beast absolutely had a lot of the flaws people hate in Chibnall's writing, but what objectively sets it apart is the heart and bravery of the message

"love the art, hate the artist"
okay y'all. y'all. so like, I say this regularly. I made it up. but I think it should be used by everyone.
like, this is a hot take, but it's okay to enjoy something made by a shitty person.
this isn't to say boycotting and cancel culture should be stopped! like, if someone is a shitty person, they should not be paid to be able to continue to be shitty. so yeah, go ahead and pirate shit. wait until media is free and enjoy it then.
but like, I feel like people go so hard when it comes to shitty people that they're essentially killing the arts, and the people who find peace with them. it's just not fair.
examples under the cut
I mean the first and most obvious example would be j.k. rowling. there's SO MUCH discourse surrounding her. but there shouldn't need to be. she's an awful person and a transphobe, and she should be avoided and boycotted. she doesn't deserve any more money. that being said, we can support things in the franchise she's not a part of. we should support fanart and fanfiction involving these beloved characters. we should encourage trans headcanons and embrace the fact that a lot of what makes the Harry Potter universe so great is the fans, not her.
another one is Michael Jackson. he was a pervert and shouldn't be celebrated the way he was and still is. that being said, he made music inspired by black culture and in turn inspired new types of music. so his music, things like the moonwalk, they should be appreciated.
John Barrowman is another good one. he was inappropriate and people have every right to blacklist him. but Jack Harkness? Jack Harkness is a PHENOMENAL character. he stands for omni rep, embracing queerness, and is a well constructed character that parallels and bounces off The Doctor beautifully. and? he can easily be recast. it's literally sci-fi dude, it's not that big a deal. yes Barrowman made a huge impact on the character, but he's not all he is. the writers contributed, too.
Jonathan Majors is a hot topic right now. yes, he should absolutely be blacklisted and removed from the mcu. but that doesn't meant they have to get rid of Kang. he was going to be (and still can be) a widely used character - characters, really - within the marvel universe. they can just recast him. they did it with Bruce Banner, they did it with Rhodey, two major characters in the mcu. they've done it with more I can't think of at the moment. and again, it's technically sci-fi. not to mention that with No Way Home and the Loki variants, they clearly showed that the same character can have different faces/actors.
notable mention: Tom Cruise. Knight and Day was awesome.
so yeah. hate the artist, love the art. it's really not as big a deal as people make it out to be.

what are your thoughts on j barorwman?
personally I don’t associate him with anything outside doctor who and while I’m glad he’s being held accountable for what he did it doesn’t really affect my enjoyment of the Dw stuff he is in. Also his defense seems to be nobody told me to stop. Well that doesn’t make it okay. I’m apathetic at best but what really gets me is how it seems that at the time everyone knew and it was sort of just accepted?? Wild times
I feel the same way. I’ve been meaning to google and learn more about it because here’s what I remember for sure: he was going around in interviews openly saying that he was running around exposing himself backstage for laughs. It was publicly known and documented and he was reprimanded at one point and then everyone (the culture at large) sort of laughed it off when he did it on other productions. It’s not okay and I’m glad he’s being held accountable but it doesn’t ruin stuff he’s been in for me the same way it does if someone has harassed a specific person.

please tell me your doctor who thoughts xx
I assume this is about my human nature/family of blood thoughts specifically, and I am aLL TOO READY TO TALK.
I might miss some things because I only watched those episodes once about eight years ago and got so angry because of their missed potential and poor treatment of Martha that I could never bring myself to watch them again 🩷
I’m also DEAD certain I’m not the only person who thinks this and I’m sure other people have said it before!! But anyway. My Thoughts are that John (ten’s humansona) should have fallen in love with Martha during these two episodes. He just should have.
What they give us as it stands is “the doctor has a little romp around in 1913 England and gets a little crush (tehe) and then he goes batshit later on. Martha is belittled, subjected to racist bullshit, and is just generally mistreated by the people around her, including her friend/the man she loves and the woman he’s got a big fat crush on!!”
Like what do these episodes do for Martha, as a character? What do they show us about her that we didn’t already know?? Sure her bones of the hand scene shows us how smart she is and how she doesn’t take any guff but we already know these things about her, and that moment didn’t need to come about through the object of John’s affections speaking down to her and disparaging her. (And on another note like. we’re supposed to feel bad that Joan and John can’t live happily ever after?? After that display??? I don’t care about you bitch, you disrespected Martha. Die sad you crusty racist.)
Martha has a shit time, being treated like garbage while she’s looking after John and protecting him and just waiting for him to turn back into the Doctor so they can run off together again. It’s a miserable experience!! And frankly the entire thing adds nothing to her character or to the overall narrative.
If John had fallen in love with Martha, it would’ve been an entirely different experience. Because here’s the Doctor — not the Doctor, not her Doctor, but almost him — smitten with her. Looking at her adoringly. Wanting the same things she wants and has wanted for months at this point. And that’s a MASSIVE ball of moral and ethical and emotional mess. And of course, OF COURSE, because she’s Martha Jones, the best of them all, she would still tell him who he is when the time comes. Because that’s who SHE is. She’s selfless and brave and loving. She puts everything else before herself.
Like. We could’ve had Martha doing her best to keep her distance while simultaneously having to protect him and keep him safe, we could’ve had John making romantic gestures that she would LOVE to enjoy but can’t because she knows it’s not right and it’s not him and it’s not fair, we could’ve had the aBSOLUTE AGONY of John’s “falling in love didn’t even occur to him?” speech but without it being accusatory against Martha. Like picture that for a moment. Picture that instead of “you watched this happen and that makes you as bad as him and I am so sad!!! hold me, racist gf”, we got a heart wrenching, pleading speech to the tune of “I love you and I want to stay here with you, like this, forever”
That would have HIT. It would have hit so hard. It would have said so much about Martha as a person, it would have shown her character and her morality and her selflessness, and it would have made those episodes SO good. We didn’t need some random woman inserted into the plot, we had Martha right there!! An intelligent, beautiful, kind woman who the Doctor cares about already, and who John sometimes dreams of. Literally why would he NOT fall in love with her if he woke up human, with no memory of anything??
And then we’d have everything that comes after. Ten remembering, all of it, being in love with her, with MARTHA, with this woman who put him before her own feelings. We’d have the potential fallout of that — does he develop feelings as himself and keep them secret, or does he not develop feelings and it’s simply a layer of guilt and tension for the rest of the series? And whatever the answer is, it just makes it all the more painful when she leaves. Maybe it even changes the way she leaves!! Whatever the case, fUCKING OUCH!!!
This is not at all coherent but if you read this far, bless you. I hope you’re also mad about these episodes now because I will be for the rest of my life.

You know what's great? Now we're getting a few episodes of a couple of parents having accidental adventures in the TARDIS
Maybe it's because I'm not the teenager I was in 2005, but I'm excited.

fun behind the scenes of a set up to a plan that hasn't been relevant since I published chapter like, three (back when chapter two was chapters two and three before I went back and combined them. I don't think any of you who are following me have been following the story enough to remember that except for maybe ihf)
the originally answer to "What's Marion’s deal" was during the events of Name of the Doctor she ends up in a Time Loop and the version of Marion you see isn't her first go around it.
Anyway, a really dumb way I forshadowed this that in hindsight there's ZERO shot would make sense to anyone but me was that chapter one featured Ten
"what does that have to do with anything?"
If you've read a lot of Time Jumper fics (and let's face it, if Celery is the first Time Jumper fic any of you have read that would genuinely shock me) most of the time the first Doctor they meet is Eleven.
So her meeting Ten first would be Foreshadowing that this isn't actually the first.
"Luna that doesn't make sense!"
"Luna that's convoluted"
"Luna what kind of convoluted game theory ass nonsense is that?"
Correct!
