Things I Loved About Thor: Love and Thunder

*SPOILER WARNING*

1. The Gods Metaphor: I think the gods council could be a metaphor for a lot of different things, but I understood it as a metaphor for a council of leading world powers. Individual countries approach for help against an oncoming war, aid against the pandemic, famine, massacring dictators, rising sea levels and sinking homes, etc., to which the council will reply, Regretfully there is nothing we can do for you. Your country's problems are your own.

Maybe if you have enough power to call yourself a leading world power (said power having been acquired through war and colonialism, or in other words, human sacrifices), you also have a responsibility to give aid back to the world? I don’t know. (BTW, climate change is real and the irreversible consequences get catastrophic in 30 months, please ask your government representatives to write climate agreements, things are looking real bad.)

Like the other gods, Thor still has the colonial power metaphor working in him too. At the beginning of the movie, he destroyed a holy temple while winning a battle for the native people there. Saved the people, but destroyed a cultural monument in the process. He does apologize for the destruction, though, and he doesn't ask for any compensation. He saves people for the sake of saving, which sets him apart from the other gods.

2. The Classic Thor Adventure: Here's the formula. Thor experiences loss, Thor gets character development, and Thor saves people despite high personal costs. Not necessarily in that order. This movie, like the previous ones, stuck to the formula. It works for both Thors.

3. Terminal Illness: Sometimes cancer treatments don't work. But there is a way to interpret death by illness as something other than "a lost battle"! The chemotherapy, and continuing the fight for everyday life, that is a battlefield! That is a warrior living life and achieving Valhalla through their courage and tenacity! (Also made me think about the pandemic’s ongoing death toll. There's a reason humans invented the concept of the afterlife.) (A Warriors' Welcome awaits all who fall in battle, you know! You get it!) (I cried in the theater.)

4. The Hammer: I think, no, I hope Mjolnir doesn't form attachments to its wielders. Mjolnir chooses wielders based on their willingness to sacrifice themselves for a just cause. The power of the hammer doesn't have anything to do with saving its wielder. It is a resuscitation device meant to last long enough for the wielder to do what needs to be done. I think it would be cruel for that hammer to be sentient, both to the hammer and the wielder being chosen. Of course, I don't think the wielders themselves would be as sad about the implications as I am. They're self-sacrificial heroes.

(Stormbreaker is definitely attached to Thor though. That ax has got a personality.)

5. Production Value: The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous, and the lighting in the fight scenes? Phenomenal. I love glowing eyes and arcing lightning so much. The battle scenes are so satisfying. I can't stop talking about the action sequences. The use of slo-mo is ethereal.

6. Hotness Scale: Thor and Valkyrie are so hot. Dr. Jane Foster, so incredibly hot. Your catchphrase is so cool, Mighty Thor. (MY BLORBOS.)

7. The Kids: If I were still a twelve-year-old and I’d just watched a movie where children weren't merely helpless victims who needed to be rescued by adults, but they were also cool heroes of their own right who had an incredibly badass action scene as they rescued themselves?? I mean, I know what my all-time favorite superhero movie would've been henceforth. (Maybe this is why I loved the Percy Jackson books so much.)

8. The Lovers: Jane Foster and Thor Odinson are in love. They fell in love sitting around a campfire talking about stars, and somehow they never stopped. The downside of being in love with a superhero is that you never know which world-saving mission will take your lover away. From beginning to end, they were star-crossed—and yet they didn't stop waiting, or crying; and whenever they saw each other they unfailingly said, "I still love you."

(They went to Halloween parties and learned rollerblading together. They bounced hero catchphrases off each other. They're awkward nerds who forget to explain the context for the weird stuff they blurt out. I just. Can't deal.)

9. LGBTQIA Representation: Hey, look, trans rep! Gay rep! Lesbian rep! The characters are important to the story and all survive too! That's pretty cool. Especially for a mainstream Marvel movie expected to be watched by a whole bunch of people. 

10. Life Stages: This is possibly the last movie for the Old Avengers. Marvel is changing their target audience from middle-aged men/ex-children to current children. It's a necessary transition. It feels fitting that the final Thor movie asks our severely traumatized, still living hero: After everything is said and done, what will you do? And Thor adopts a child to raise with love. Neither of them have family left, so they might as well become new family for each other. (God of Thunder and God of Love, huh. That’s some myth.)

(This movie was a great sendoff for Thor in terms of reopening your heart after grief and giving power to the younger generation, but I'm seriously going to miss Thor, holy fuck. I. My og team time bomb. Now they're all really bowing out and exiting stage left. Bruce is gonna be the last hand-off.)

11. The Deer: There is a very specific kind of deer called the Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus) that screams like a human. It is the dominant deer species in Korea but endangered practically everywhere else. They are so many of them in the mountains. My friend once recorded them screaming at night because they were holding a metal rock concert. I guess what I'm trying to say is, the concept of the screaming deer is not new to me, but the screaming deer were still pretty damn funny.

MY UNORGANIZED, SPOILER-FILLED, RANDOM THOUGHTS ABOUT THOR 4

First of all: FANTASTIC, PHENOMENAL movie!!!!! Thor means a lot to me, and I was really upset with how he was handled in Endgame. But our lord and savior Taika smiled upon us and gave us this gift.

IT’S GORGEOUS!!!! SO PRETTY!!!!!

THEY KILLED JANE I’M SO PROUD OF THEM!!! I love the comic run but I thought they should’ve gone through with killing Jane, especially with how they built up to it. But they went through with it here!!! I thought they were gonna do some loophole thing with Eternity but they didn’t and I’m really glad. I’m sad to see Jane go, obviously, but this was really meaningful. Poor Thor lost Jane at the end, yes, but the movie is about learning to love fully and freely without fear. Loving in spite of loss.

Percaya gak, kalau Semesta yang kita tinggali saat ini adalah semesta yang didominasi oleh superhero laki-laki. Paling tidak seperti inilah yang terpampang di dalam jagad semesta Marvel. Coba saja hitung. Atau, Coba tanyakan ke siapapun, sebutkan nama-nama superhero? Pasti jawabannya, Captain Amerika, Thor, Iron Man, Spider-man. Kita lupa bahwa ada  Black Widow, Gamora, Ajjax, Wanda.

Dan itulah mengapa, Ketika nama Natalie Portman diumumkan akan memerankan mighty thor pada comic con (2019) aku adalah orang yang mungkin paling berbahagia di Jagad semesta . Bagaimana tidak;

Natalie portman adalah girl crush pertamaku dan bisa jadi girl crush pertama semua remaja yang tumbuh di era 90an.

Jane Foster - Mighty Thor akan menjadi kombinasi yang mematikan, karena dia adalah gabungan antara kekuatan otak dan otot. Kalau Dr Banner aka Hulk dan Tony stark bisa, lantas kenapa Jane Foster tidak bisa.

Marvel membutuhkan lebih banyak karakter superhero wanita yang tidak memiliki tanggal kaduluwarsa (jujur sih, masih belum bisa terima perlakuan marvel terhadap Black widow, aunt May, waanda, Gamora, Ajax, Frigga)

Kembalinya Natalie Portman, sebagai Jane foster - Mighty Thor di Thor, Love and Thunder (buatku) dipastikan akan membawa angin segar di kancah per superhero-an jagat Sinema Marvel.  Kini, Dr Jane Foster tidak lagi sekedar menjadi overqualified damsell In distress yang hanya menjadi pemanis layar kaca. yang meskipun kepintarannya melebihi kapasitas manusia normal pada umumnya namun tetap Jane Foster tidak lebih dari sekedar pacarnya thor.

Oh, Jangan salah, Aku mengagumi pacar-pacarnya superheroes, Pepper Pots, MJ, Peggy, Christine teramat sangat. And Those guys would be so lost without their ladies. Namun apa yang kutahu tentang mereka? Tidak banyak. Sejauh yang ku tahu,  mereka (paling tidak dari apa yang kulihat dari film)  ‘hanya’ ada disaat para superhero membutuhkan dukungan emosional. Menghapus air mata, membasuh luka, memberikan penguatan melalui sentuhan, but when things got  hot heated, they told them to hide. I’m tired. Everything is all about the men, and never about the ladies.

What if as a woman, I want to jump into a battlefield And live as a hero.

Jika keponakan laki-laki ku bisa se-nge fans itu terhadap spiderman, ingin menjadi seperti Iron Man, sekuat Thor, sepintar Dr Banner dan se-keren Captain America. Aku juga ingin melihat anak-anak perempuan bisa menikmati momen heroik terhadap Jane Foster atau Black Widow dan superhero wanita lainnya. Maka, alangkah menyenangkannya jika Marvel juga memberikan ruang yang lebih banyak kepada superhero atau karakter wanita untuk bisa ikut andil dalam menjaga semesta dari serangan alien-alien mengerikan, atau entah siapapun itu yang ingin menghancurkan kedamaian bumi atau planet lainnya.

I want to see the little girls scream so loud, claps their hands when they see the badass female superheroes kicking the bad guys asses. And say, “I want to be like her when I grow up” excitedly. Just like when my teen nephews never stop talking about Peter Parker and the other three Spider-man after he came back from watching “No Way Home”

Mau suka atau tidak dengan film terbaru  Marvel, Thor; Love and Thunder. Paling tidak, Jane Foster sudah diberikan porsi yang sama banyaknya dengan Thor. Jika Mjolnir adalah perkara layak atau tidak layak, maka Memalui Mjolnir, Jane sudah terbukti bahwa ia layak, untuk dilindungi  dan melindungi. Dan yang Lebih menarik lagi, di Thor, Love And Thunder, Jane Foster mengidap kanker stadium empat. Secara pribadi aku suka ide tersebut. Siapapun berhak dan pantas untuk menjadi pahlawan bukan? Tidak ada formula khusus untuk menjadi superhero. Tidak ada spesifikasi jenis kelamin, tinggi badan, warna kulit, atau riwayat kesehatan. Semua berhak, jika memang berhak.

Kanker menyeramkan, mengerikan dan begitu menyiksa. Menggerus harapan, dan menghilangkan cahaya kebahagiaan kepada tidak hanya penderita namun juga orang orang tercinta. Ibarat luka yang ditetesi air garam. Tidak terlihat namun sakitnya terasa. Tidak nampak oleh mata namun membunuh. Orang-orang yang berjuang melawan sakit adalah sebenar-benarnya superhero.

Aku seperti kembali menjadi anak umur sepuluh tahun sewaktu Mjolnir bergerak mendekat disaat Jane terbaring di tempat tidur rumah sakit. YAS! This is it! Ironically, The classic Thor who capable to fight the bad guy alone.  Now, isn’t capable to fight Gorr the god Butcher by him self. And he needs Jane by his side. And she did, she destroyed him.

Masih belum bisa dipastikan apakah, Jane akan kembali, namun jika melihat dari Acuan komik dan Post credit scene, mungkin kita akan lebih banyak melihat Jane Foster di proyek Marvel yang akan datang. Dan sungguh akan sangat menyenangkan jika Jane bisa mendapatkan Frenchise nya sendiri. And if that comes to real, I will be seated!

Together with the former all-father Odin, who's soul now inhabits the hammer, Jane starts a dangerous journey to return Thor home... 📍 After watching "Thor: Love and Thunder" where Natalie Portman filled the role of Mighty Thor with her excellent performance I was more than hyped for this new series. "Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor" starts off with Jane in her role as the Valkyrie. I loved the Valkyrie comics as well so reading this beginning I instantly fell in love. Jane Foster is badass as always and her interactions with Odin are quite funny. Sif represents strength and relentlessness and is more than appealing to me as a Heimdall fan. The antagonists are quite boring as of right now (besides one character SPOILER Enchantress) however this first issue is just a setup. We will see how they develop. The art style on the other hand is really good. I fell in love with the depiction of Sif and Mighty Thor. I’ve been thinking about doing this thing where I watched all three Thor movies and the first Avengers movies and take note of all the funny moments. Then I’m gonna compare all pre-ragnarok funny moments to all ragnarok moments to explain the problems I have with the humor in there. This will probably be spread out across several posts so here we go with the first one. This is just going to be a post about all the funny moments in Thor 1, the next moves will come later. I’ll also add a couple extra thoughts near the end. ~ “Better call it Coulson cause I’m startin to root for this guy”

~ *Selvig bullshitting his way through convincing SHEILD to let Thor go*

~ Coulson: “Just keep him away from the bars!” Thor: “Where are we going?” Selvig: “To get a drink”

~ *Thor and Selvig getting competitive in their drinking abilities*

~ “What happened?” “We drank. We fought. He made his ancestors proud”

~ *Jane fumbling with the dishes in front of her crush*

~ “Shh. Heimdall may be watching” “Heimdall demands your presence” “We’re doomed”

~ “Base, we’ve got Xena, Jackie Chan, Robin Hood”

~ *drops mugs when they see the Warriors 4*

THE END!!!!!! (finally)

I’ll do the big comparison between the movies on one big masterpost. But now a couple things I wanna mention before I forget. For starters, the closer the movie gets to the climax, the LESS jokes there are. Also, in most (if not all) of the emotional scenes (Loki telling Thor that Odin died, Loki confronting Odin in the Weapons Vault, etc) there were no jokes. Also, Darcy was the comic relief in this movie and she was ACTUALLY funny. She felt like she had depth and was pretty well-rounded imo and wasn’t annoying compared to OTHER characters in Ragnarok. Also, all of the jokes feel in-character and flow well with the movie.

If you're glad that "boring & pretty" Dr. Foster is finally going to be a strong and badass character then...

from the deepest, darkest bottom of my heart I say,

FUCK OFF!!!

She has always been a badass and 200% awesome.

She doesn't need to prove it by killing enemies and monsters.

She was on the verge of making her own Bifrost.

She survived an infinity stone that was eating her from within.

She came up with the plan to defeat Malekith by using the convergence against him.

She stood firm and worked day and night to prove her theories.

Her being Lady Thor is fantastic but that doesn't mean earlier she was boring and weak..

I thought of roles for some of the other Avengers for my SamBucky AU I’m calling School of Fish AU bc school?? fish?? Bucky’s a teacher and Sam’s a fisherman?? get it?? lol

Like I said previously, Sam’s the local fisherman. He’s living with Sarah and helping her raise the boys like a good uncle and he meets Bucky and is like 👀. Bucky’s the history teacher at the local high school. He’s still pining over his childhood best friend Steve who recently got engaged to his longtime girlfriend Peggy.

Steve Rogers - I see him running a mechanic shop for some reason??? I don't know why but that's what I'm feeling rn. He’s been friends with Bucky his whole life and thinks of him as his brother. He doesn’t know Bucky’s in love with him bc he’s oblivious. 

Peggy Carter - I don't actually know what she'd do for work (maybe the English teacher??) but every Tuesday and Thursday evening she teaches a self defense class at the community center. Nat and Valkyrie help co-teach from time to time. She does know Bucky's in love with Steve because she's not oblivious but isn't jealous or anything like that. She understands why Bucky would fall for Steve and wants Bucky to be happy. They actually get along pretty well.

Sarah Wilson - Helps with the family fishing business like in canon. Also like in canon she’s a single mom taking care of Cass and AJ with Sam’s help. Every Saturday is lady’s night where she, Pepper, May, Wanda, Natasha, Peggy, and other ladies of the mcu I’m forgetting get together at Valkyrie’s bar and just chill together. I just want more woman friendships in the mcu so I’m giving it to myself as a treat. 

Tony Stark - Stay at home dad of Morgan. Before Morgan was born he was a scientist in the nearby city. He is the PTA’s number one volunteer for stuff. Married to badass business woman Pepper Potts. #malewife

Pepper Potts - Like I said, badass business woman. I think Aunt May would be a business partner just because I love imagining those two having a friendship 👌 I don’t actually know what the business would be (I haven’t thought that far ahead) but she works in the city that’s like 30 minutes away.

Peter Parker - High school student who tutors and babysits a bunch of the younger kids in the town they live in. Still a super smart nerd and lives with Aunt May just minus the super powers. Good friends with Ned, Shuri, and Michelle.

Wanda and Vision Maximoff - Owners of the small bakery/café in the town square just because that seems like it would be their jam. Met in college and married about a year ago with twin sons on the way.

Natasha Romanoff - Besties with Clint. No one actually knows what she does for a living or what her life was like before she moved to the town a few years ago. I honestly don't know what she’d do for a living but it wouldn't be as exciting as everyone in town thinks it is lol

Clint Barton - Owns a farm a few miles out of town where he lives with Laura and the kids. Goes to the farmers market in town every weekend to sell the stuff they grow on the farm. Laura is the local librarian because she gives me librarian vibes.

Bruce Banner - The science teacher at the high school. He and Tony are old college roommates bc science bros.

Valkyrie - She owns the bar in town and know everyone's secrets because they get drunk and tell her. Very bi and besties with Thor. 

Thor Odinson - High school gym teacher seems obvious but it just suits him okay?? Coach of the football team too. He's a lot of the kids favorite teacher just because he's so kind and understanding. If a student has a problem they'll most likely go to Mr. Odinson for help. In a long distance relationship with Dr. Jane Foster who’s doing science-y stuff in a different state but should be coming home soon.

Loki Odinson - Drama teacher. I picture him being like Mrs. Darbus from High School ​Musical.

T'Challa - The charismatic town mayor who’s always reeclected because everyone loves him and he's doing a fantastic job running the town.

Shuri - T’Challa’s younger sister and student at the local high school. She and Peter have a friendly science rivalry that has caused a few minor fires and explosions.

Dr. Stephen Strange - I feel like doctor at the local hospital is too obvious but I don't know what else he'd be?? A librarian maybe?? I'm vibing with doctor tho.

I know I'm still missing a bunch of characters but that’s all I’ve got so far. I kinda like the idea that the Guardians of the Galaxy are a group of hippies that just showed up in town one day and haven’t left lol

Before the Guardians there was no one for Gamora and she sure as hell is gonna make up for it - sometimes with Peter, sometimes without

Dr. Stephen Strange - BOOM BOOM WOOSH! This mystical magic man has too much confidence in himself to be straight

Christine? Yep. Tony? Yep. He’s not gonna limit himself to one when he can so easily have both or more

He has an infinity stone around his neck. Do not disrespect Strange, he knows all 100/10

Natasha Romanoff - she’s a master assassin and will very willingly use her sexuality against people so look out. If she’s trying to get info from you she will make it a night you won’t forget anytime soon. Her downside is killing people when it gets tricky

Nat knows everything there is to know about you, that’s your warning 8/10

Hope Van Dyne - sometimes when Hope gets tired of Scott’s shit she wishes there was someone else that she could spend her time with... a woman would at least have some idea about what’s good and what’s not

Smart but the biggest catastrophe (although it’s mostly Scott’s fault) 6/10

Tony Stark - Tony freakin’ Stark

Tony has no preference when it comes to anything (except plz no murderers) and he loves everyone with his whole heart. He will do anything for them and will sometimes forget about his own health. Luckily, he’s loved by many and they all care and look after him in their own way

He has no idea what to do with his partners - male, female or other (it’s usually bc he’s so mesmerised by them) 1/10

Thor Odinson - he’s not queer, he’s just the best ally and loves his brother and Brunnhilde | Valkyrie and Carol and every other queer person with his whole heart (but Loki the most)

Constantly has no clue what’s happening due to weird Midgard customs but is having a great time nonetheless -1/10

So I’m hanging out at home watching Thor movies and you know what? “Thor: The Dark World” is way better than people give it credit for.

Loki in his cell, biding his time, acting all cool and shit? And then he gets the news that his mother is dead, and you see that moment of rage surpassing his cool exterior? And THEN Thor forces him to drop the illusion, and we see him crumpled, broken, vulnerable, a complete mess? That’s good shit.

Frigga being badass, protecting Jane, facing Malekith and fighting until the end? And the funeral, my God, all the lights and the boats on the water, then Odin bangs his staff and Frigga turns into stars and ascends to the heavens? Good shit.

The interactions between Thor and Loki, two brothers who once loved one another turned enemies who are forced to work together and trust each other, constantly at odds and yet struggling to find the brotherhood bond they once shared? Good shit.

And yes, Jane Porter, and her sassy assistant, and Dr. Eric- I love them all, and I missed their absence in Ragnorak (even as awesome as Ragnorak was). I felt personally slighted at the one throw away line- “sorry Jane dumped you”- like, that’s it? That’s the only explanation we get?

Anyway, I really liked “Dark World,” and it bums me out how critics/fans are like “oh yeah, THAT one, lets just forget about that atrocity.” Because I really liked it, and I think it deserves more recognition and appreciation. Just saying.
