I saw this dress and had to try and put Jupiter in it. Some minor tweaks to the detailing to make them more oak-leafy.

(It's very rough shhhh I'm just going with that my brain will accept right now)

Save Point (2021)

Inspired by a location, which looked absolutely perfect for a Goddess Statue save point (From Seiken Densetsu 3, or “Trials of Mana” as per the recent localization) to appear. It’s amazing how varied perception/interpretation of a few measly pixels can be.

Golden Goddess Statue because not only did it look good, but they restore HP *and* Mana *and* save in-game!

Failure to Launch: Videos

So I was trying to take a video flip-through of my sketchbook for this lettering course and uh. erm.

Well someone forgot to swap the mode.

One of these days I'll get there without goofin' but today is very clearly not it.

Better Days Are Yet To Come [May-June 2022] Materials: Sketchbook Pro, Wacom Intuos Pro

This was the first piece I completed after having problems with focusing on things! Started as a case of “just throw paint at a blank canvas. Doesn’t matter how bad it is. Just try it”; and like 3 weeks later it was finished.

Technically I could go back and define the further away flowers, but to a certain extent they’re actually appropriate to leave them blurry and undefined. 

Inspired by these absolutely amazing photos from @__yoii_to on twitter (https://twitter.com/__yoii_to/status/1528660631271878656 )

When I started looking for some closer reference photos of hydrangeas for the flowers and leaves, there were some brilliant displays of multi-colour hydrangeas. So I changed it up a little bit from the original to bring in the extra warm colours, further from the viewer. Because those warmer, better days are yet to come.

So for much of the last ~6 months or so I've been slowly working my way through a domestika course for lettering. About to head into the final project phase, but here's a sample from the latest practice task!

TASK 5: LETTER A FUN AND COLOURFUL PIECE

Disclaimer: I took this as a bit of a challenge to combine fun and colourful lettering styles (funky font choices, bright colour choices etc) with darker quotes/words/content.

Practice Piece #2 "Ah, there was no hope from the start" (뱁새 / Silver Spoon - BTS)

A mildly tweaked translation (original from doolset bangtan; "Ah there’s no hope from the beginning") of a pre-chorus line from this BTS song from 2015's The Most Beautiful Moments in Life Pt 2.

Things I wanted to try and achieve with this piece:

Set the lettering so reading it would feel like hearing the song

Address the underlying themes of the song (Silver Spoon) while using bright colours and 'fun' fonts

The overall theme of the song is about the inequality and injustices between the privileged and the disadvantaged - particularly older generations to younger generations.

To keep the piece bright, I chose sunset/dusk colours (bright yellows and oranges through to pinks and deep purples). This also lent itself well to adding stars in the 'night' sky, drawing on english phrases like "Shoot for the stars". Using more puffy fonts like Frankfurter for 'From' and 'Start' was intended to make them look like inflated balloons - 'From' even gets a silver lining for being closer to the stars, before all the hopes and dreams are deflated and dark by the time it gets to 'start' at the bottom, so far away from the stars.

(Sorry for the lack of reflection on the rest of "no hope", the metallic inks are so finicky to get a good shot of)
