The Commander, despite their numerous triumphs and the dozens of biographies (all rich in misinformation, of course, they haven't the time for interviews), is actually a rather disliked person.
At least, by the "higher-ups". See, there's a reason they're not privy to diplomatic meetings. For all their experience in forming alliances, they're not too fond of being questioned. It's the reason they never became Marshal of the pact, too much talking and not enough doing.
But there's some occasions where they can't quite sneak by, where Kasmeer is unavailable to speak for them, where they have to don the suit of an untraumatized warhero, a Legend.
The questions about the Dragons are, for the most part, the easiest. Talk up Zhaitain, steer clear of Mordremoth, be careful with Jormag, and steer clear of Aurene unless you want to pick a fight.
Balthazar is the hardest. Those questions leave the Commander's chest tightening, all too aware of the judgement and betrayal on the human faces, the curiosity of others, how Rytlock and Kasmeers eyes linger a bit closer and the Commander smiles, pushes through the phantom pain through their chest, how the burned skin, waxy, begins to sting again, ignore the rattle of chains in their ears, the laughter and mocking cries of the forgotten dead.
Joko is a bitter reminder of the consequences of ones actions, but the Commander avoids him for another reason. After all, it's not easy to admit the reasoning behind a lich's death is because your daughter, the last elder dragons, ate it.
Explaining it was a rebellious phase never seems to make it better.
The niceties, the falsities. Being talked down to. Pretending that the alliances are not fragile and strained. Walking through lasers. The misunderstandings and the idolizing of the Commander's most heart wrenching traumafizing, and nightmare inducing exploirs. No, the Commander was never meant for that.

The whole "emo subculture was gender exploiration in the 2000s people just hated it cus they were homophobic and it was for gay people" revisionist take is fascinating to me as someone who was in school when emo subculture was popular. Yeah sure it helped people experiment with presentation but the majority of those people were just assholes with a victim complex and not much else.

Favorite 2022 Reads
Last year, I did one of these wrap-ups and enjoyed it, so I figured I’d do another! These books were ones I read for the first time this year (except the bonus, which I re-read this year and really resonated with me) that I enjoyed more than the rest. There’s some romance, some horror, some fantasy...and hey, let me know if you’ve read and enjoyed these, or if you have recommendations you think I’d like in 2023. These aren’t in order of enjoyment because I can’t be bothered to rank that intensely, but are arranged alphabetically by author’s last name.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Friends. Buddies. Pals. This book right here. I really enjoyed LB’s YA fantasy books, so I figured I’d finally give this one a shot. And boy am I glad I did. I’ve realized that while I do read a ton of romance novels, the books that usually get me are urban fantasy. This one has horror, dark academia, and commentary on academic elitism and social privilege. Trigger warnings abound, but it’s worthwhile if it won’t mess you up too badly. I’ve already put in my preorder for the sequel, Hell Bent, which will be released in January.
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
An end-of-the-year surprise! During finals, I don’t let myself read any new books, but this one came in from the library and I didn’t want to risk not reading it. It was a trap...I was going to read it just during my commute, but I could not be stopped. This is a YA urban fantasy novel, but it’s impeccably researched and well-written. Arthuriana meets critiques of systemic racism and traumatic grief and hooooo, it’s good. I’m eagerly awaiting the second book in the series, which was released not long ago.
Book Lovers by Emily Henry
Listen. Have you ever had the experience of reading a romance novel and then realizing you relate more to the “bad” woman that the male protag dumps so he can get with the sweet, gentle one who will just be the best and most supportive wifey ever? Or that you’ve been in that boat yourself? This book provides justice for all the ambitious women with rough edges that want to see themselves in a romance novel, without demanding that she sacrifice her ambitions and have 55 children (while still being sympathetic to other life paths). Bonus for publishing industry nonsense and complex sibling relationships.
The Deal by Elle Kennedy
I thought this would be just a fun palate cleanser of a friends-to-lovers college story. And it is that, but it also ended up being so much more. Let’s talk the friends-to-lovers angle--I rarely read a book where I so thoroughly believe in the friendship between the characters before I see a hint of romance. It was so well done. Then, as for the other, it had one of the most realistic and compassionate treatments of how sexual assault can affect people even years later. It wasn’t solved and cured and tied up with a neat little bow, but it was hopeful nonetheless.
I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
Ah, the complexities of grief and recovering from conservative subcultures. Loving your parents but knowing they aren’t doing right by you. Confronting exploitation and exploiring recovery. This memoir is a gut-punch, and it’s incredibly well-written. I can’t wait to see what Jennette does next, even if that’s dropping out of the public eye.
Bonus Re-Read Fave: Fair Game by Patricia Briggs
I believe I read this for the first time last year, but this year was when it started hitting hard for me. In addition to being a fun urban fantasy novel (it’s book 3 in a series, so perhaps not the easiest to just open and dive into), but ooh boy does it hit. You know how The Deal is compassionate about dealing with sexual assault? Well, this book may take on a fae angle and deal with prejudice, but it’s about the catharsis of someone who loves a victim being willing to burn the world down for them, and I fucking love it. *chef’s kiss*

and the thing is like yes absolutely media holds an impact and media has inherent perspectives in it and it sends messages and it can have societal infleunces. there is obviously a reason as well as to why the cia and several others push for propaganda through movies and films - for one example using the media to glorify the cia, or the idea of the rogue cop, or to further war on terrorism narratives etc. im not denying that. its also like maybe the population of adults shouldnt be so stupid as to gobble anything and everything up uncritically and maybe itd be less of an issue if ppl were less infleunced?
but that just reminded me, when the new game of thrones came out a lot of radical feminists were against it because they said its showing on incest was glorifying and promoting incest. and listen,,, theres good critiques to be made of the got and hotd shows (glorification of sexual abuse and violence among others, which isnt done in the books, and also which hotd did much less ) but also like......... with the incest thing i rly dont agree. i dont agree that hotd served to normalize incest, to show it as a good thing, or to glorify it, i really dont. just because you show something = condoning it. and sorry but at times the point of art and media is to explore the more uncomfortable and fucked up sides of human nature. the fandom reaction is one thing and people shipping a toxic relationship is one thing. but in hotd the incest is a) shown because it was indeed very common in the real world historical times the show is based upon b)shown because game of thrones itself is very much an exploiration of all the fucked up things ppl do c) definetely not portrayed as a good thing or a thing to be done. viserys and emma being cousins and coming from a line of incest is partially what leads to emma having so many miscarriages and pregnancy issues and dying. the targaryans idea of blood purity and incest is what leads to several of them going crazy. the relationship between rhaenyra and daemon is interesting bc of their dynamic and characters but it is shown from the very beggining to be toxic, grooming, abusive, and deeply fucked up, while also showing the nature of many fucked up incestuous relationships, which is that they care abt each other but also they dont and they love each other but also its very toxic and harmful and not any sort of normal form of love and care. like their dynamic is interesting bc they reflect parts of each other but the show definetely doesnt glorify it or say "hey, incest is good!!" it just. doesnt. it just doesnt.
also like,,,,,,,, someone wont watch hotd and then suddenly decide that incest or grooming is okay. thats not how it works. if they were gonna do it they were gonna do it regardless of a show
also......... that show also shows child marriage. and i think we can all agree it didnt glorify child marriage and in fact showed how insane and gross it was for a 40 year old man to be proposed to marry a 12 year old and then a 15 year old. just bc. u show something doesnt = condoning

Patch Notes: Emiliano Melis
Emiliano Melis is a sound designer and composer based in NYC who combines analog and digital instruments to create a rich sound built with layers of melodies and rhythms.
On this episode of Patch Notes, Melis composes an evolving ambient track using a long stretched tape, plugged into a Strymon DECO saturator unit running a background texture. On top, he uses an Elektron Digitakt sampler and TASCAM Porta-05 four-track recorder to play tracks, patterns and sounds. This style of electronic composition is exploired on his new album, Tape and Polaroids, which is released on September 18 via Mother West.
Find the rest of Melis’s music here and buy his Electro Ghost Vol. 1 sample pack, which contains chords, loops and tones recorded with instruments such as Moog’s DFAM, Korg’s Volca FM and more. You can also watch more videos like this at his Instagram and YouTube channel.

i hope the paxton/devi side of things will be exploired quickly and that they'll wind up as friends because i'm highkey uncomfortable with paxton being embarrassed by devi and thinking she's out of his league and basically having to be convinced by his sister to give devi the time of day.
Personally, I have two main issues with Devi and Paxton romantically.
One, they have absolutely nothing in common, and two I don’t think the point to which Devi has idealized him is a healthy basis for a romantic relationship. Like the audience, Devi doesn’t know who Paxton is (which consequently means he's a very flat character) and I just don’t vibe with that.
I know it’s an inevitability that their relationship will be explored, but either the show needs to make me care about Paxton, or explore their relationship quickly and have them realize they just don’t work together and become friends instead (because I do think they’d make very, very good friends.)
