Fox "News" is not a credible place to get real news. They proved it again when they misled viewers and readers into believing that the incident at the border with Canada at the Rainbow Bridge earlier this week was a terror attack. Some of the Fox reporters even made up Islamic extremists who carried out this non-attack. They just kept making shit up to keep their fiction going.

The usually histrionic Vivek Ramaswamy had previously been calling for a border wall with Canada. Fox's false report gave him an opportunity to demagogue about it live. Vivek really needs to switch to decaf.

Canada's public broadcaster, the CBC, also covered this.

That didn't stop a candidate for president of the United States from appearing on Fox News to promote an aspect of his platform: Building a border wall with Canada. "I have been sounding the alarm bell about the northern border for a long time," said Vivek Ramaswamy during a lengthy interview about an incident he did not witness, was not a subject-matter expert on, and had no insight into.

The real "terrorists" are far right Republicans trying to hijack the United States.

The resurgence of reactionary politics is entirely predictable and has been traced for a long time. Yet every victory or rise is analysed as new and unexpected rather than part of a longer, wider process in which we are all implicated. The same goes for “populism”. All serious research on the matter points to the populist nature of these parties being secondary at best, compared to their far-right qualities. Yet, whether in the media or academia, populism is generally used carelessly as a key defining feature. Using “populist” instead of more accurate but also stigmatising terms such as “far-right” or “racist” acts as a key legitimiser of far-right politics. It lends these parties and politicians a veneer of democratic support through the etymological link to the people and erases their deeply elitist nature – what my co-author Aaron Winter and I have termed “reactionary democracy”. What this points to is that the processes of mainstreaming and normalisation of far-right politics have much to do with the mainstream itself, if not more than with the far right. Indeed, there can be no mainstreaming without the mainstream accepting such ideas in its fold. In this case, the mainstreaming process has involved platforming, hyping and legitimising far-right ideas while seemingly opposing them and denying responsibility in the process.

people are discoursing about the laios and shiro fight bc that was always going to happen but i do hope that wave crests quickly and we can all come to see it as what it is: literally one of the best written fights between two people who are both entirely justified in their actions and acting without any malice or cruelty of all time

started watching A Murder At The End of the World and i'm only like 4 minutes in rn but oh my fucking god, they already did the impossible, they made synthesizing a literal audience not only not annoying but actually intriguing and effective. holy shit.

#james talks #james watches stuff #a murder at the end of the world #if you're new here or have never consumed any media: synthesizing a literal audience is one of the most annoying things anything can do #it is at best distracting and at worst condescending and grating bc it assumes and assigns audience reactions and interpretations #and it also REEKS of a lack of faith in the material itself to be able to speak for itself #most of the time it's done for no real purpose and the few times it has a narrative purpose it's done awfully #even a movie i ADORE like SCREAM (1996) was not immune to this. #the one single flaw in that movie to me is Kenny repeating the 'behind you' joke. not only is it not funny the second time but it's— #synthesizing the audience by making the characters an audience to the same movie as us and telling us how we should be reacting. #another movie that tries to do this and fails miserably is like Halloween: Resurrection which tries to make some commentary— #on media as exploitative entertainment and the audience as willing participants and equally culpable in the continuation of trauma but the— #execution of it is absolutely horrible and that's even beyond how bad the rest of the movie is. #every time the characters are watching the same media or there's an actual audience in the media it's literally never gone well— #at least as far as i have experienced. but this is the first time a literal audience in anything has actually worked bc it's like— #right in the opening and it's the audience actually getting invested in the story so THAT audience responding the same way actually WORKS #actually borderline genius tbh
