Fierce Corpse Fest
Hello everyone and welcome to Fierce Corpse Fest!
It is a fest primarily to celebrate and appreciate the Fierce Corpses of MDZS/CQL/The Untamed. If you love Wen Ning, Song Lan, or Nie Mingjue, then this is the place for you! If you love turning other characters into Fierce Corpses, this is also the place for you!
This fest started on twitter, and we've now expanded to include tumblr and discord as well. (our twitter account is fiercecorpses)
We're having a few TBT events starting next month, and our Ao3 collection from this year is remaining open until our next event (a mini event in April for Wen Ning's birthday, and a full fest event in October) if you feel inspired by any of the past prompts :)
More info will be coming here soon, so stay tuned!

To be Wen Ning...
In 1974, Thomas Nagel wrote one of the most discussed papers on the problem of consciousness in the last half-century, “What Is It Like to Be a Bat?” But, what is it like to be a ball? Let me risk a further speculation here. The ball is like a dummy, a ventriloquist’s dummy. Now, we know that a dummy is empirically, objectively, just a piece of wood, covered in rags, with someone’s hand up its ass. It is not alive. And yet the dummy feels alive when it speaks, just as the ball feels alive when we are playing. But the strange thing about the dummy is that even when it is not being animated by the ventriloquist and is just lying unused and ignored in an attic, it still feels like it has a potential for life, a terrifying potential, which is why puppets are such sources of uncanny fear, hovering somewhere between life and death, occupying neither one realm nor the other. We might say something analogous about soccer balls.

Ok but I’m surprised there wasn’t some kind of fierce corpse outbreak throughout the MDZS world. Like imagine if the corpse powder was able to spread to smaller villages and infect more people, and the weather or temperature doesn’t seem to affect the corpses soo.

okay I'm in love with some of the suggestions on how Wei Wuxian should fill the hole in Wen Ning's chest... obviously I had to test a few of them out. fortunately Wen Ning is nothing if not a good sport

Made myself sad thinking about how fast Jin Ling runs to Jiang Cheng’s side if he even suspects he’s been hurt because he’s lost everyone in his family, everyone who cared about him and was supposed to watch him grow up and all he has left is his jiujiu and he can’t lose anyone else, he just can’t

Today I finished another artpiece to go with my fierce corpse Jiang Cheng AU. :D
Sketch can be found here - fic can be read here.
[image ID: A fully coloured digital drawing of Jiang Cheng from MDZS/The Untamed portrayed as a fierce corpse. He is standing in the rain. Water is running from his forehead down over his eye and cheek, making it unclear if he might be crying or if it's just the rain. He is wearing his clothes so that the right side is covering the left to accentuate his status as fierce corpse. End ID. More detailed image description in alt text.]

tumblr isn't letting me answer your amazing comment on my post about wwx's obvious crush on jgy and the rest of 3zun in the novel, so i have no choice but to send it to you here as an ask: i am now envisioning lwj busting open the get-along crypt post-canon to fight two extremely confused fierce corpses in a fit of jealous pique.
lxc, torn between shock and horror "wangji no!!"
lwj, with determination "wangji yes >:C"
HELP 💀
As I typed it I was like "oh god what if he has an embarassing wet dream about it and lwj finds out via incense burner"
Lwj waking up in a cold sweat: I have to go
The poor lan disciple who just watched hanguang-jun storm out of his house in his pyjamas: what??
Lwj: I have to kill 2 corpses
Disciple: isn't a corpse already dea-
Lwj: Not dead enough

Could've added more characters here but since the poll only allows 10 options I just chose three from each media. Plus the 'show me the results' option I normally forget to add lol
Reblog for bigger sample size and more little kisses for your blorbo. And as always please go nuts in the tags/replies/reblogs to explain your reasoning.

fierce corpse yiling laozhu following jiang cheng from the burial mounds. jiang cheng keeping the fierce corpse of his shixiong in lotus pier. dragging back demonic cultivators to 'interview' on fierce corpse care. demanding suibian back from the jin. demanding wei wuxian's notes.
mo xuanyu calls back wei wuxian. the rumors wei wuxian hears are mostly the same but the flavor is sharper. sect leader jiang is still hunting his shixiong's ghost. even going so far as to challenge the chief cultivator over his belongings.
jiang cheng sneers at him, that he thought wei wuxian would pick something better for a body.
the golden core reveal throws jiang cheng badly (was he delusional all these years?) and he still goes to guanyin temple and gets skewered and gives back the chengqing. and the story play out as it does.
except for when jiang cheng goes home, his fierce corpse has broken containment and gotten its hands on suibian. it waits for him in his room, taking a fake nap on his bed, and when jiang cheng comes in, it tries to drag him into a spar until the blood registers. jiang cheng isn't having that. he knows, he's been deluding himself making a mindless monster act like wei wuxian. thinking that a part of wei wuxian wanted to stay with him after all. what a fool, he was. he should really put an end to this farce. before he can draw sandu the fierce corpse attempts to decapitate himself with suibian which it drew. jiang cheng decides that maybe he shouldn't judge too quickly.
so this is how jiang cheng ends up taking his secret fierce corpse with him, he won't leave his side, he won't give up suibian. he gets him to put on a veil at least. but that still means that he hits the next cultivation conference with a man trailing his every step who's carrying wei wuxian's sword and constantly teasing him. and as much as he tries to hide it, he can't hide how much he likes that.
the cultivation world is largely torn between three reactions; a) what the fuck? what the fuck? b) it's nice that sect leader jiang has relaxed a bit. you know? c) drama!!! the sheer drama!!! of it. they thought jin guangyao's scandalous downfall was good? hahh this is a thousand times better. the front row seats for the first cultivation conference with hanguan-jun/wei wuxian and jiang cheng/SIC in attendance are sold for the price of small cities.

Out of all of Wei Wuxian's traits, one of the ones that fascinates me the most is how incredibly casual and chummy he is with corpses. All the other cultivators are a bit desensitized to the dead by nature of their profession, yes, but Wei Wuxian in particular treats the dead very much the same as he treats living people, and I think it's simultaneously one of his best and most concerning attributes.
On the good side, the way Wei Wuxian treats the dead is absolutely an extension of his overall goodness and empathy. He stands on the side of those that are looked down on, and nobody faces more discrimination that the dead. He treats the dead like people because they are people, and they deserve to have their voices heard. That's what Empathy's for, and that's why he revives Wen Ning to stand as witness to his own murder. Wen Ning is not a thing! And even when Wei Wuxian is raising armies of dead Wens to fight on his behalf, we get illustrations of him giving a helping hand to a weak old corpse that can't stand on its own.
Wei Wuxian is painted in very deliberate contrast to Xue Yang, who treats the dead as tools and deprives them of agency. His closeness with them is a symbol of his kindness.
However, beyond treating the dead decently and like people, there is a point where his chumminess with them starts to get unsettling, and that's the point where it becomes a reflection of his loneliness and trauma. In particular, I'm thinking of his cuddliness with the ghosts he uses to torture Wen Chao and the corpse girls he's hanging out with when he invites Lan Zhan to drink with him. Because treating the dead with respect is a very different thing from having a corpse lay in your lap as you stroke its hair. And fierce corpses by definition do not have personalities (with Wen Ning as the exception that proves the rule), so treating them as companions to socialize with is rather concerning behavior.
So why is he like this? Isolation and trauma!
It's easy to understate the trauma of Wei Wuxian's three months in the Burial Mound, especially given that we don't see them play out but do get details about so many other horrible moments. But those three months? They Fucked Him Up. In particular, beyond the trauma of the near death experience (or presumably many many near death experiences in a row), he spent the better part of three months without seeing a single other living human. People are not meant to do that.
So what is a person gonna do when he spends three months in Worse Solitary Confinement? And when that solitude is spent on Fierce Corpse Mountain? He's gonna get really weird about corpses. He's gonna turn into the kind of man that would let a murderous ghost he's controlling lay in his lap as he strokes her hair, because for an extended period of time, that is the closest thing to human contact he's had access to.
And later, post-sunshot-campaign, Wei Wuxian does regain access to living humans and society, but he's still incredibly isolated. Just about everyone besides his siblings and Lan Zhan hates and/or is scared of him by the time we hit the scene of him and the fierce corpse girls throwing flowers, so it's no wonder he's hanging out with dead people. He already picked up the habit of replacing company with corpses once, so of course he doesn't see anything wrong with it. Maybe they're there as bodyguards, maybe he's just extremely lonely and doesn't have any human companions to drink with him, or maybe (probably) it's a mix of both. But in any case, it's a pretty clear expression of a horrifying degree of both past and present isolation.
That's why, though he doesn't lose his respect for the dead or his desensitization to touching corpses, we never see him just Hanging Out With Mindless Ghosts in his second life. It's a substitute for real companionship, not a healthy behavior, but lack of company is no longer an issue he has after being resurrected.
He doesn't need an entourage of corpse girls, because this time, when he wants company, he's always got Lan Zhan.
