I’ve been working on a nonfiction book about the last 25 years of cinema for about four years now. I haven’t said much to anyone about it, but I’ve recently made some progress on that, and in reality, it might end up being the first book I publish. Yes, the plan right now is to go indie. The book weaves in interesting facts about the biggest movies of each year and my personal experience with them.

I recently watched Love in the Time of Fentanyl, a documentary about the Overdose Prevention Society in Vancouver and their harm reduction efforts amid the current opioid/fentanyl crisis. I 100% recommend it to anyone for all the reasons listed in this article and more. Right now you can even stream it for free from PBS!!

The big numbers about the failed “war on drugs” and “over a million deaths” are hard to wrap your head around but this documentary focuses on the day-to-day operations and experience at a safe injection site on the Downtown Eastside. The daily actions that keep people alive—administering oxygen and naloxone, providing clean works, making sure people have a safe place to use or spend the night, sharing stories of survival and remembering loved ones

Overdose prevention sites (OPS) are so safe, humane, and beneficial for every member of the community that it’s reprehensible they’re so rare and often illegal. At a local harm redux meeting for my city last week, we celebrated the opening of a new safe supply distribution center, a hard-fought battle itself—and they only offer clean works, not a safe place to use or just catch your breath. Other countries have had OPS for decades with ZERO overdose deaths at those facilities, it’s ridiculous how the U.S. government has ignored and actively fought against both the evidence and humanitarian pleas for help when tens of thousands of people die every year now
