sorry for not posting much this week, scad’s midterms kicked my butt. however, i do have a research comic that I made for class, analyzing food wars!: shokugeki no soma. it’s going to be part of a larger cooking genre research zine at the end of my quarter, so stay tuned for that!
this comic was a little rough to make- i was doing an anatomy unit in another class while working on it, and you can (or at least i can, lol) see my style shift between the first and second pages. ^^’ overall, i had a lot of fun with it! looking forward to making my second one in a few weeks- not sure what exactly i want to focus on, but i have a lot of options. the cooking genre is waaaay larger than you think and it’s kind of crazy.
hope everyone has had a good valentines’ day!
food wars official art by shun saeki. everything else by me :)
also, meet my sona, hypnos! they’re an alien who’s going to art school and they show up throughout a lot of my recent work. once i get some more free time i hope to talk about them more as a character.

Fantasy food #1 Moondrop Tart
I rarely draw food items due to their complexity but after a rough day I sketched out some food items. This is the first digitally rendered one, the Moondrop Tart!
A primarily winter dessert made from moondrop berry jelly and vanilla cream set in a buttery pastry case, the moon on the top is created with powdered sugar while the decor includes jelly stars and chill berries.

Everything was going fine in our domestic life, we had been married for a solid eleven years. We had sex four times a week and ate three meals a day. Everything was going fine all round us as well. There was no scarcity of food, and diseases were under control all over the land. Most importantly, my life-partner was finally beginning to relax and enjoy the little pleasures of life– strolling around the garden, drinking post-lunch tea, taking afternoon naps, nibbling on snacks in the evening and reading books. It was a joy to watch him gain some weight around his hips and thighs, and a relief to see the starving paleness from his skin disappear after years of stress and anxiety.
The reason behind this bliss was that the bloody kingdom that he loved so much had at last stabilized— economically, socially, politically, and mentally.
And me, Monkey D Luffy, as the reluctant warrior king who was loved by all, did everything in my power to keep the peace intact! All for my introverted better-half, Trafalgar D Water Law; the true ruler behind the facade of the king that I was.

by the way, i finished my essay. it has narration if reading isn't your thing. 5.7k words, about 20-30mins.
as i state, this topic feels pretty tiresome at this point, but i tried to keep things focused and bring a somewhat novel perspective. ultimately i'm just articulating what i believe and why i believe it. hope it offers some comfort, food for thought, or anything else. thanks for reading.

ok hi hello proper interest check! would you be interested in contributing to a zine focused around recipes and original characters?
it works like this: each contributor submits between 1-5 pages of illustration, comics, fic, collage, photography, etc, and a 1-2 page recipe related to the work. these submissions should feature the contributor's original character(s) and ideally the dish in question. the dishes do not have to be real, edible, or recreatable in real life! feel free to submit fantasy dishes and Dubious Food!
this would be unpaid volunteer work, with the finished product shaped up into a digital pdf that is pay what you want, all proceeds donated to a food bank or similar organization (tbd!) and i will post receipts upon donation. all contributors get a free copy!
thank you for your time!

Hello ☀️ What is some solarpunk media you'd recommend? Like movies, books, shows etc?
Oooh good stuff!
The hunger games - book particularly- as a teen super good angst and realizing it's v similar to the system we suffer in already is good
V for Vendetta - we all saw my obsession with this as apart of Reaping week. There is something so hopeful about ppl overcoming their deeply religious and fascist country en mass and blowing up their government!
Moxie - I haven't seen the movie, but as someone who was really into Riot grrrls it was awesome to have a book about the movement and how to make zines and have courage in a small town. Here's an example from the earlier half of the book!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Star trek/The Orville- futuristic settings post scarcity and with beautiful diversity and abilities both if these guys are awesome tv shows. Personally I prefer any star trek with Data in it (that's bc I'm autistic tho) season 1, ep 7 of The Orville actually is a very smart and fun episode critiquing modern capitalism and direct democracy
Jericho- there's only 1 season of it before its continued as a comic, but it's a legit post apocalypse about a small town dealing with the fall out of a nuclear explosions across the country. Things like, electricity isn't around anymore and how to reestablish trading posts once the government implodes on itself. Neighbors rationing food for winter, towns swapping food supplies for wind turbines. Awesome stuff!!!
Tumblr media
Kipo - again post apocalypse but with music and hope and love! A lot of focus on friendship and building a better more inclusive world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then in the fantasy section of books, anything from Discworld or Earthsea!
I of course have more just the top of my head have fun!!!

Your North Star (Tifa-centric - Final Fantasy VII)
(( written for Soaring Heart: Tifa Zine Vol 2 @tifazine ! Leftover sales are going on right now, as well! And many thanks to the mod team for inviting me as a guest 💖 ))
Grasslands rolled out to the horizon. The lush greenery danced in the wind, rippling like water. Tifa smiled and brushed her fingertips along the tallest blades. The natural sprawl was a welcomed sight after the barren wastelands surrounding Midgar. Hopefully, she and her allies discovered more thriving flora along their travels.
The sun gradually sank and lit the world aflame. Tifa longed to press on—just a little bit longer, she thought with nearly every task—but there wasn’t an inn marked on their map until Fort Condor. Thankfully, they stocked up on camping equipment in Kalm before following Sephiroth’s tracks, even if it meant forgoing those pretty mythril claws.
“Think we should stop before it gets too dark?” Tifa called out, shielding her eyes from the light.
The remainder of the group—Cloud, Barret, Aerith, and Red—brought up the rear, then slowed to a halt.
“Not a bad idea,” Barret replied. “Could use some food, too.”
“Oh!” Aerith bounced in place. “I can help unpack everything and—”
“Need to find a place to make camp first,” Cloud cut in, dry as ever. “Can’t be out in the open. It’s dangerous.”
Aerith raised an eyebrow. “Well, it’s a good thing we’ve got you boys to see to that!”
No response, then Red sighed. “I’ll take the first watch.”
“And I can start a fire,” Tifa added, smiling at Barret. “Then I can whip up something for dinner.”
Barret matched her expression. “Now that’s more like it!”

Last year I had a chance to play Mörk Borg, which is the bleakest fantasy RPG I've ever played and I haven't stopped thinking about it since.
Tumblr media
So how'd it go?
Mörk Borg was probably one of the easiest games to learn. I made the joke at the table, if you've ever played D&D you are overqualified to play MB. It uses the D&D OGL, loosely, and is technically compatible with it, but this is not that kind of game. That's just all so you can roll your little d20.
The rules are free in the "bare bones" edition but trust me, you'll want to own the full art edition, get a physical copy and put it on your shelf. It is a gorgeous book and has a style that a lot of games lack. If I could distill about 10% of the style into my own games I would be extremely satisfied with my work.
Seriously like. Go to their website. Experience this. Do it now (or don't, I'm not your mom. But you should though).
This game feels in line with the perceived brutality of first edition d&d and its ilk. You may name your character if you like but don't get attached. You can have as little as 1 hit point and nothing pulls its punches here. Deaths are common, and expected and add to the feel of the world. You're not trying to save the world, not really. You're on the precipice of doom and you're just scavengers picking over the bones of the preeminent corpse of the world.
But you can also generate a new character very quickly with SCVMBIRTHER. Don't like your new one? Kill them and make a new one. As many as you like. It's a riot just generating these wretches and seeing what could be in store for you.
But while it is fun and also sometimes necessary to generate characters quickly like this, doing so misses out on one of my favorite parts of any RPG. The Character Sheet!
Tumblr media
To me a good character sheet is like a window into the soul of the game.
The game has this whole, doodled in the margins of your math homework, zine you found in a dirty puddle, graphited in a bathroom stall at a crust punk show ass aesthetic and the whole book is just like this. And I am eating this shit up! Here's the alternate character sheet provided:
Tumblr media
This soul appears to be a little scrunkled, can I get a new one?
Now I haven't talked about how the game plays yet or anything but just drink this in for a minute. If looking at this character sheet does not make you want to try this game then I don't know what else would!
I mean I guess knowing how the game plays would but like... Okay.
The game itself uses d20 rules, but much lighter. You have small stats, and add them to a d20 roll. No skills no proficiency bonus. You'll eat your 1's and you'll like it. The target numbers are usually pretty low, floating around 10-ish, unless you're dealing with something nasty.
You may have powers, but they seem to be pretty limited in their availability and uses. The game itself plays like D&D-lite, in that you are probably doing a dungeon crawl, or other dirty work you do as an adventurer. But you are not an adventurer, you are lowly scum just trying to make a quick buck. There's no heroics going on here. If your d&d group already plays like a bunch of murder hobos then you're basically already playing mork borg in spirit but just cosplaying as a bunch of heroes. This is the game you should be playing if you want to be a cutthroat little bastard.
The game uses Omens, a limited resource that you can use to improve what you're doing; deal max damage, lower damage taken, reroll a die (or someone else's) that kind of thing. You only get them back after a rest though so if you blow through them quickly you're at the mercy of fate (and fate is not merciful here).
Our group played Rotblack Sludge which is the introductory game from the main book. We did it in a single session pretty easily, even between doing food and a fair bit of goofing off. I imagine your group could do it in 1 as well, but 2 sessions tops for sure. There are a bunch of free adventures available on their website too if you wanted to get a little deeper! That link is to their "content" part of their site which is just an endless slew of free stuff. They really just want you to play their game. And quality enough that they know enough folks will buy it.
My main criticism of the game is that I'm not sure how this plays out in the long term. I think that narratively and thematically, the game is crushing it. But mechanically, the game is light. This is by design but I can see this turning away people looking for a long term replacement for d&d. I mean some committed groups will enjoy this forever regardless, but I feel like this has the legs for a few decent adventures before you'd wrap up and move on.
But a big part of long term games is character advancement. My understanding was that the levelling system in the game is pretty light to non-existent. It didn't come up in a one shot for obvious reasons. I'll admit I only own the free rules at this time, I'm still waiting for my copy of the actual book itself. So I had to go to my friend who ran the game to understand how the leveling system works. There's no experience points, so the group levels together. You check to see if you gain some hit points, you check to see if your stats increase, and you get a random piece of gear.
And when I say check I mean you roll some dice and compare to current. For hit points you roll 6d10. If the result is higher than your current max HP then you gain 1d6 max HP. Roll under and you lose 1 max HP. This choice frustrates me. I actually like that there's a chance to lose HP, but is this really the best way we could do this?
Okay that's not fair that's a knee jerk response. Let's talk about why it might work this way. This is a bleak world so it doesn't make sense for your characters to be able to heroically weather any storm. They're just people who got lucky and survived. So we want the ceiling for how many hit points a character can have to be on the low side. The system does do that, but it takes a weird path to get there, which feels out of place considering this is otherwise a very light game. I'm gonna talk about dice math for a bit so feel free to skip ahead to the next orange part if you feel sleepy.
The average of 6d10 is 33 (5.5x6), which means that characters who managed to level up multiple times are at much higher risk of losing a hit point. Average result of +1d6HP means about 3 hit points a level on average (accounting for the fact that you still could lose some along the way instead of gaining them). Assuming you start with 5 hit points (you might have 1-10 depending on your class), you're looking at 9 level ups before the odds are against you to gain HP. You might think damn. That's a long time. And assuming a character even lives to see level 10. And I agree.
So why does it need to be so convoluted along the way?
To replicate this system without the cumbersome dice roll comparisons you could have players roll 1d8-2: there's always a chance you'll get -1 HP, even 0 HP. After a character has 20+ HP it could change to 1d8-3, then 1d8-4 at 30 and so on. If you don't like the idea of players losing multiple HP then just have it be that any resulting negative is only -1 hp. But this way you're making 1 roll and decreasing the gain over time, while still gaining. You could also just roll a flat die every level, but I think in Mork Borg it is very thematic to have something like leveling up, which is normally comforting, be cause for fear.
Anyway this is easy enough to home brew out and it seems like a lot of folks do that. But I'm judging the game based on how it is not how I could change it.
The hit point math is done... FOR NOW.
The way stats level up is simpler. Roll a d6 for each stat. If the die is equal to or higher, gain +1 in that stat (max 6). If it's less, subtract 1 (max -3), a 1 is always a -1. I like the idea that your stats could fluctuate and that high stats are not safe bets. A few levels and weird rolls later and your worst stat could end up being your best. I think this part could be controversial but I like it and I like how they do it!
But there's not really much more to advancement than that. This is fine if you're just playing a short game. But you hear stories about people running campaigns for years on end and I guess... I just don't see that happening with Mork Borg. I might say it's not that kind of game but it actually kinda is though? They have rules for long term games.
The Calender of Nerthrubel fortells the end of the world. When 7 miseries have been accumulated, the world ends. At the start of the game you choose a die to roll for Miseries; as little as 1d2, as high as 1d100. The game master rolls the die and on a 1, the world gains a misery. So the size of the die does determine the upper limit of the game, but it is possible for the game to be over in as little as 7 in-game days regardless of the die type chosen. This is a very interesting mechanic! In fact I think it's one of the most interesting parts of the game! Most games struggle with a sense of urgency. Short of "you have 48 hours to save this prince" or "if you don't return with 25 wolf noses tomorrow you don't get paid", it can be hard to wrastle the players together to try and save the world in a timely manner. Meanwhile in Mork Borg your days are literally numbered. I can't imagine the tension that would come from being on your 6th misery knowing that every single day could be the last. That is truly bleak.
The role-playing opportunities in this setting for someone trying to grasp at the last ray of hope in the darkness, to fight against fate, or to battle the darkness within is truly incredible. The Dark Souls series has already probably come to mind by now for you and it's hard not to see that as an influence or at least a spiritual contender. There is something to be said about overcoming the odds and surviving in a bleak world. The Dark Souls franchise and periphery games have thrived on that for years. But when you die in that game, you come back you just lost some progress.
You don't come back when you die in Mork Borg, you just die.
So with no significant character advancement in the game, how do you meaningfully advance a character in a game like this? The game literally urges you not to get attached to your character. It's a bit tongue in cheek about it but it's not wrong.
At our table I was the only one who survived start to finish with the same character. And that wasn't from skill on my part i got a lot of dumb luck! We had 6 players and I think we had about 10 deaths? One player was on their like 4th wretch by the end of it! This seems excessive and I don't know if this is a standard experience, but we understood that's kind how it would go beforehand so our expectations were pretty set.
While I am sort of criticising this aspect, there is something pretty thrilling about going into a game without being too committed to your character. It makes those moments where you do realize them as a character in the narrative all the more meaningful, and more tragic when they die a terrible meaningless death. Nothing is precious in Mork Borg not even your life. So make the best of what you've got while you still have it.
Mork Borg is definitely not a perfect game.
But I cannot stop thinking about it and would drop any game to play it again, or even run it.
(and that's not even to speak of all the Borg spin offs like Pirate Borg, Orc Borg or CY_BORG!!!).
If you already play D&D or Pathfinder, Mork Borg is definitely worth your time to try, because you already know how to play it. It might not be for you, but if you go with the free rules and play a free adventure the only thing you're out is your time.
If you play other RPGs and enjoy dungeon crawls or hack and slash game play, this is still a great choice and will be easy to pick up and try.
If you're new to RPGs, Mork Borg is maybe a pretty weird one to start with, but is a really polished experience to try and a really easy game to cut your teeth on, so still not bad!
If you're more interested in character role playing, then Mork Borg might not be what you're looking for, but there are so many interesting narratives that can be explored here that I think would be really interesting and hard to replicate in other games!
If you're a power fantasy gamer, then I think Mork Borg might be a skip for you. Unless your power fantasy is to be a lobotomized mouse in Alley Cat Alley. No judgment, you do you.
If you took one look at the characters sheets up top and said "oh hell yeah I'm gonna play that!" and didn't read the rest of this lengthy text then we are already best friends but alas you'll never know it because you didn't read to the end... Oh well.
Now excuse me, I'm gonna dream about being ripped apart by a skeletal ooze and dying a painful death tonight (affectionate)!

14. Any favorite motifs Oh this made me think hard- asdkfjs perhaps the wishful answer is that I try to lean into uhhhh "scene" visual motifs for lack of a better word?? Stuff you'd doodle in your notebook in class. I like really pointy and sketchy lines, exaggerated proportions w/ big hands and feet, and bright neons. I like horizontal stripes and checker patterns. I say all this and then have no idea if that actually comes across in my work lol, I think I could (and should) go crazier with it. I think mostly cause I've been drawing a lot of my OCs who are in very high fantasy settings so my stuff has been pretty subdued
25. Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by Oh my gosh I get told all the time that I seem like I was a kingdom hearts kid, which is so fair because I always admired it from afar but I never had a playstation/a way to play it, so I knew very little about it other than that I thought it looked cool as hell. I do think I drew from Nomura's style tho, just from cultural osmosis. I think lot of the fashion/stylistic insp in my stuff that people attribute to KH actually comes from yugioh skaldfjs
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines) I feel so lucky that I've gotten to do so many rad art community events of all kinds in the last few years! When I was in university I helped found an art club with some friends and we always did tons of trades and challenges and stuff so I really developed a taste for a it and met a lot of people who are into event organizing, including my partner, who is out there organizing art events with every spare waking moment they have lmao. They've literally put on several mini art fights for various fandoms at this point, it's crazy. As for zines,I've participated in good handful of fandom zines by now, but I've been particularly stoked to get to actually help organize some original zines that are focused on OC content, and that's been soooo rewarding. I really enjoyed ackee's OC food zine too! I participated in leidensygdom's secret satan art trade event this past holiday season and had an amazing time! And of course, I've also been having fun doing art fight since 2020 and hope I can find the bandwidth to participate again this year! God that got so long, I just really like community events cause it staves off the Social Media Ennui, and reminds me why art is fun and rewarding, you know?

Happy WBW! ^^ If you could bring one thing/person/place/etc. from your wip into the real world, which one would it be and why?
Lol, FINALLY got here! I'd bring one of the houses from Giant City into the real world, and then live there. The houses in that town have come from every era and culture that has ever existed, they're decorated and repaired almost entirely with dumpster-dived or recycled trash, and since they don't have electricity they are kept comfortable with natural items that have been engineered over the millennia to serve the same functions that modern appliances do. That said, not sure how I'd feel about the food magickally appearing and disappearing as needed. Delivery is nice, but that's going a bit too far.

here’s a serious post. the artwork from my zine about being hypersexual, with my oc, bogs, as the subject
the writing was too long to put into the alt text so i’ll put it below (with censorship):
page 3: Ever since I’d been young, this has been what I’d turn to. A way to quench boredom, a way to find comfort, a biological reset in my brain. Like a key in an ignition, a hand in an orifice. A flood of endorphins, oxytocin, and dopamine, all for me and entirely in my control.
When did it become out of my control? When I broke my hym/en with a marker at 13? When I started doing this to survive? When I noticed it last summer? I don’t know.
Even when it hurts, I don’t stop. It hurts but when I stop, it hurts more. A crash, exhaustion; the feelings of comfort get ripped away and it hurts more. Stopping means allowing myself to feel worse.
page 5: Even when it sickens and disturbs me, I stay and watch. The images torment me; they feed my thoughts which feeds the need to look at the images. Did the recurring intrusive thought of making po/rn in public get started by seeing po/rn online? Or is watching po/rn what stops me from doing it?
It tears up my conscience and poisons my brain. I forgo sleep and food and friendships to poison my mind and jam painful objects inside of me.
I stare at people living out sick fantasies while I’m unsure where the line is drawn between my own fantasies versus my fears. Is my gen/ital response out of anxiety or aro/usal? I want to make it go away.
page 7: I’m so achingly lonely. I can’t tell whether all this combats the isolation or pushes me further into it. I need the comfort, I need the way it fills the void, and I need the control.
The Fiend is a collection of “lesser” demons in a trench coat. The Fiend is a lonely, aching, howling animal. It’s comforting me and itself in the only way it knows how.
Something hidden within my life experiences has set me up for this. The Fiend was always there, just not always a fiend. Somewhere along the line, we got the wrong idea. Circumstance turned something normal into something painful and I can’t fix it myself anymore.

Y'all know me and my general reluctance to Do A Capitalism, but like. It's the time and I'm trying to buy my wife a new computer so here I am, Doing A Capitalism. Everything is half off, plus a completely ridiculous "buy it allllll" which amounts to about 75% off.
Highlights include:
By the Author of Lady Windermere's Fan, which is the best RPG ever made about Oscar Wilde plays. This one, in addition to being a hilarious and exhausting game that will resonate with the theater kids in the audience, is just a very funny read.
Penis 2.0.77, which is not a "game" so much as it is a zine full of jokes about genitals. Finish off the elaborate character creation for a game that doesn't exist, entirely focused on your underwear zone.
Let's Rob RJ McElhenny and Steal Her Golden Quill, which... hold up, let's check and see if Rowling has said anything this week which makes me want to cry and puke... checking... checking... and yes, of course she did, which means this game is a fucking evergreen catharsis fantasy of wizards robbing a terrible billionaire.
You're all lost, starving, in the snowy wilds. You need food. You must sacrifice somebody. But who? Discuss. Vote. Live.,  which is a game whose entire text consists of that title, which maxes out the "title field" length when uploading to itch. That was made for a jam and damn if I'm not proud.
o tawa, which is to the best of my knowledge the first and only RPG written from the ground up in Toki Pona. sona mi la, musi ni li musi wan taso lon toki pona taso. musi la, sina ken tawa lon telo suli, li ken lukin e ma telo nasa, li ken pana e pona tawa jan ale. kin la, sina jo e wawa nasa kepeken nimi pi toki pona. It's a cool way to practice the language if you're learning it!
Wooden Sword Thespians, which is just me going "Thirsty Sword Lesbians is pretty fun but what if instead of powerful adventurers defending your community from toxic threats, you were trying to put on a high school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream?"
And more! There's a Disco Elysium game, a Locked Tomb game, a Next Generation game, and weirder little games besides.
Check it out. Get some games at some discounts. Laugh at my little japes and jests. Get my wife an Acer Aspire TC so she can play Binding of Isaac while she's supposed to be working. Engage in Capital with me.

Fast Facts:
Hellooooo, Fandomland. This is FFR, and I’m a Midwestern Millennial who’s one of the admins.
I started reading Check Please! at the end of 2016 but got truly active in the fandom midway through 2017.
What do I like outside this fandom? Pretty much anything under the Disney umbrella. Sci-fi and fantasy lit and cinema. Comics and manga. Photography, gardening, and doodling. Traveling in general. Nature. History and culture. Architecture, fine arts, and textiles. Analyzing current events and sociopolitics. And food… all the food.
About Me:
Check Please! is not the first fandom I got involved in, but it’s probably the most long-standing fandom I’ve consistently engaged with. It’s a testament to the power of that comic.
Those who know me or have seen my content probably know or can infer that my favorite character is Dex. Nursey is a close second, and I get a kick out of making exceedingly indulgent* hcs for the Frogs’ backgrounds in general (it legit varies on my mood which family I enjoy hc-ing more, since they emphasize different interests of mine)
So many of those hcs and worldbuilding will probably never be realized into fic or even a post, but I’m always happy to infodump if prompted.
*I am a full adherent of the “anything that doesn’t contradict the explicit text in a work is capable of being canon-compliant” school of thought, and I’m so thankful (esp as one who indulges in Nurseydex) that Ngozi deliberately leaves her comic open-ended beyond Bitty.
Fun Fact:
As a sports photographer, the irony is not only that hockey’s the one team sport I don’t get bored of if I’m not shooting it… but I have yet to properly photograph a hockey game.
Things that I Think Would be Cool in the Zine:
● Nurseydex, naturally.
● Platonic relationships and explorations of characters’ families.
● And of course, good art in general. This fandom is legit such a wellspring of artistic eye
and skill.

Note
19, 28 for the artist asks?
Hihi! Thank you for playing!
19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
Oh oh, I love drawing inventory icons for things you might find in a fantasy item shop. Here's some for a game I was working on a while back but haven't had the chance to finish.
Tumblr media
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)
None ;A; Though I'd love to participate in a zine one day, it looks like fun but I would have no idea how to get started.
