A/n: I hope I did the reader and Tighnari justice in this one, and I hope what the reader said about the marine life makes sense 👀 Here's a quick drabble for you, I loved working on this one

“-and sharks have very sensitive styles of living and need that big space to live comfortably. That's why you never see them in aquariums or any enclosed space, they are very hard to maintain and there is a huge probability they may end up suffering and dying.. But the lack of these animals in captivity makes everyone believe that they are even more disastrous and blood-thirsty when they are not” Your sigh of both disappointment and displeasure makes the long tar ear twitch on top of Tighanri's head as he listens to you ramble. He has long since finished the task of watering the window sill plants he kept, having put them all back into their respective places, and now he has found himself leaning back against his work-desk, facing you.

The corners of his lips pull up in a warm smile, giving you silent encouragement when your tired eyes met his, and they brightened whenever yours did. As a fellow someone who specialized in one branch of wildlife and nature, he understood the sentimental side of that knowledge. You two would often babble on and on about your respective research and work zones, listening to one another and offering what feedback you could a lot of the times, but sometimes - all one of you needed was someone willing to listen. And Tighnari was the person always willing to lend you his ear.

“Such misunderstandings are not uncommon among the citizens. One misconception may lead to a plethora of misinformation down the road, no matter how someone may want to correct it. But one thing does stand - it's that sharks can be quite scary..well, they are the predators of the ocean, and being fearful of them is natural. It is very easy for a common person to not handle an encounter with one correctly” Tighnari spoke after he saw you struggle for words, scratching your head as many more rants and info-dumps circled your mind. You can feel his presence draw near and his hand wrap around yours. His fingers easily slide into slots between yours, his warm skin and brush of nails bringing a sense of ease and comfort.

“I know.. It is all to be expected, and I cant blame the people for it. But they are such interesting creatures- all of the ocean system actually. It's all so closely tied, from the reefs supplying the environment, to the krill and to the top predators of all the oceans. I mean come on… haha. It's like a big.. complex piece of art” you both exchange an entertained, tender laugh, as you brought your other hand to mingle with him, now fully facing him. You knew he was willing to listen to you through the entire night if it meant you would be at ease in the morning to come. He was willing to sacrifice his own rest if it meant you two would glean more information from the other's work life, interests and hobbies. Tighnari did not mind, but you had to admit it had become too late from the time you began your talk about sea-shells and fish.

“Heh- it is. And the way you speak about it gives it an even magical touch. Which is a bit rare in the research field where everyone is so… tight to the facts” Tighnari softly praised, and although he was that type to stick to facts and the hard truth - even he got tired of the lack of sensitivity most of these researchers and scientists had. You were a wonderful exception, and he made sure to praise you throughout interactions with other people do. Fine art must be complimented, and just like you can't stop praising this work of art of the ocean, Tighnari can't stop spouting sweet words about you.

“Ah.. you're just saying that to shut me up faster, aren't you?” you chuckle at him, and his ears and tail stiffen, his eyes widening slightly, but he quickly catches wind of your teasing and lowers his guard, responding with a smug “Oh, yes. You just talk too much, and I just loathe to listen to some salty fish with big eyes'". He feigns a grunt when you smack his arm playfully, but he can't help but to laugh.

“You got stuck on that conversation about that coral reef near Port Ormos. Are there any new research missions being carried out?” he softly asked after he had closed in to kiss you on the forehead, leading you to the bed by your hands.

1. Why did Shepard enlist? Any regrets, none at all?

mercy didn’t enlist. never once planned to be a military shill. NOT on the schedule. they’re down on earth w kasumi stealing from bad rich people and spreading wealth to their fellow disadvantaged folk. but at 17, their information hunt leads them to Arcturus base (kas tried to convince them not to go, but they went on without her anyway) where they’re arrested by Anderson. he made them a plea deal because he saw their potential and made the case to alliance brass (hackett backed him up bc he owed anderson a favor) that they’d be better off keeping mercy as a cultivated asset, vs a future enemy. real regrets though, starting during akuze (sports coach au mercy leaves the marines and does intelligence/operative work for the alliance to hunt down cerberus, which leads them to be planted on the citadel as a sports coach for a fancy magnet school). but mercy fiercely ascribes to the thought, if i can help i must, so in the big scheme of things… no regrets

(crime lord au is where mercy’s never arrested and continues building an empire with kas and replaces the shadow broker and blackmails powerful people into behaving. also founder of an award winning record label. alternate path to the fight against the reapers)

stellan grew up on alliance ships and bases after chakwas took them in. they chose to enlist because they wanted to do their darndest that no one would have to lose their home and family like they did. but really it starts because because they love exploring space and studying other ecosystems and planet wildlife, and the alliance is the easiest way to do that

3. What’s their relationship with Anderson?

legally, mercy is anderson’s ward. he didn’t plan on having a kid and never expected to take one in (let alone a teenager that sticks their nose and fingers into EVERYTHING) but at thirty two years old, brass tells him either you’re in charge of the gremlin or they’re being charged as an adult and sent to prison—and he finds that he’s ready for it. mercy of course makes for a profoundly sulky teenager after being arrested, but here’s the thing. he keeps his word (mercy’s hunting down conatix and baat. anderson offers to help). he teaches them to wield justice with frightful legal censure. there are many ways to bury a person. so they really come to respect and see him as a father. when mercy’s shore leave they send him back hideous little tchotchkes they think are hilarious. or an album that they think is really good, either found in the antique markets or an up-and-comer. they FaceTime a lot. mercy’s actually leaving him a video message when the thresher maws attack the platoon.

I’m currently reading The Invisible Siege: The Rise of Coronaviruses and the Search for a Cure by Dan Werb as part of my local library’s Summer Reading Program, and in the third chapter there’s the story of how Dr. Ralph Baric got into studying coronaviruses back in the early 1980′s, long before the virus family became known as a danger to humans with the SARS epidemic in the early 2000′s and longer still before the COVID pandemic. He became interested in this viral family because, by RNA virus standards, they’re enormous: bigger than any that should exist based on our knowledge of RNA viruses at the time. How very queer, right?

I would love for SARS-CoV-2 to be eradicated from the world as smallpox and rinderpest were. I would love to never even encounter its basically harmless cousins that only cause common colds again. I shiver at the fact that the pandemic is not yet over, from compassion and fear for my fellow humans and from fear for myself.

And yet, it struck me, once again, how even terrors like pathogenic coronaviruses are still, at some level or another, beautiful and marvelous pieces of our intricate biosphere. Infectious diseases have been a long-term special interest of mine, since on one level disease and poison are one of those things that terrify me the most, the thought of something being Wrong within you that you cannot see but you can feel the pain of, and on another level preferring informed terror over uninformed any day.

So, Coronaviridae... I may hate what the most famous among you is doing, but you are, after all, only a family of viruses. Giants of the RNA virus world, you are equal parts fascinating and terrifying.

About that vampire bat that ate Quincey's horse...

First, so we're clear, actual vampire bats are pretty tiny. They only drink about about two tablespoons/30ml of blood in a single feeding. (For comparison, when you give blood the goal is to get about 500ml out of you.) And they don't suck blood so much as lick it up after delivering a bite with an anticoagulant in their saliva. It wouldn't be much more than an annoyance, like a larger mosquito bite, except for the fact that they often carry rabies, a disease with a functionally 100% fatality rate once symptoms appear.

But, as luck would have it, I think I can explain Quincey's story about his horse getting eaten by No Vampire Bat I've Ever Heard Of: Like many things, the story of vampire bats grew in the telling and the farther away the tale got from their homeland. I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Stoker thought Quincey's account of a gigantic vampire bat was based in reality, because of the kinds of sources he might've had access to in the English world about the animals.

I'm reading a book about the cultural history of rabies right now (Rabid: A Cultural History of the World's Most Diabolical Virus by Bill Wasik and Monica Murphy), and at one point they quote from a 1796 account from J.G. Stedman of his encounter with one while travelling in Suriname. This account is... almost definitely exaggerated and very definitely incorrect about how vampire bats work! But I've included the excerpt below, and you can tell me if any of this sounds familiar. (Content warning for blood, vomit, and tall tales; paragraph breaks added for readability.)

On waking about four o'clock this morning in my hammock, I was extremely alarmed at finding myself weltering in congealed blood, and without feeling any pain whatever... I had been bitten by the vampire, or spectre, of Guana, which is also called the flying dog of New Spain, and, by the Spaniards, perrovolador. This is no other than a bat of a monstrous size, that sucks the blood from men and cattle when they are fast asleep, even, sometimes, until they die; and as the manner in which they proceed is truly wonderful, I shall endeavor to give a distinct account of it. Knowing by instinct that the person they intend to attack is in a sound slumber, they generally alight near the feet; where, while the creature continues fanning its enormous wings, which keeps one cool, he bites a piece out of the tip of the great toe, so very small, indeed, that the head of a pin could scarcely be received into the wound, which is, consequently, not painful; yet through this orifice he continues to suck the blood, until he is obliged to disgorge. He then begins again, and thus continues sucking and disgorging till he is scarcely able to fly, and the sufferer has often been known to sleep from time into eternity... Having applied tobacco-ashes as the best remedy, and washed the gore from myself and from my hammock, I observed several small heaps of congealed blood, all around the place where I had lain, upon the ground; upon examining which, the surgeon judged that I might have lost at least twelve or fourteen ounces during the night.

Happy World Turtle Day!

Today we’ll share our love of turtles and how we can protect them!

There’s lots of work to do to make sure we don’t lose these incredible creatures. They’ve survived what the dinosaurs didn’t, let’s not be what causes their demise!

Support plastic reduction when able! There are various ways you can help fight the war on plastic. It starts at home. Make a pact to stop using single use plastic if you can. With zero-waste stores on the rise and plastic alternatives becoming more commonplace, it’s not that hard. One way is to give them a reusable shopping bag, straw or travel mug as a gift. Do this but also remember that those with disabilities are not always able to avoid plastics. Able-bodied friends have to take charge.

Take part in (or organize your own) beach and river cleanups on a regular basis. Make it a fun event for any organization, school, and community group. Get out there and clean their habitat!

Support your local turtle and tortoise rescues any way you can! Here are some listings of rescues by state. Help the American Tortoise Rescue rebuild their hospital! Read more here!

Support action against the illegal wildlife trade and stop poaching! Egg poaching is just one of the many ways the sea turtle population is at risk. In Nicaragua, poachers are taking a more barbaric approach to get what they want. Join over 165,686 people and sign and share the pledge to support efforts to put an end to this horrifying practice.

Encourage adoption or ensuring purchase from reputable breeders. Stop the illegal wildlife trade! Unfortunately, many of the turtles and tortoise found in pet stores are snatched from their homes in the wild and smuggled illegally into western countries to be sold as pets. These animals are smuggled in in the most horrifying conditions, with only half surviving being hidden in suitcases/piled in boxes/ and worse. This practice only continues because the demand is there. Adopt don’t buy!

Share the importance of keeping wildlife wild, encourage proper research and care for those considering adopting a turtle or tortoise. Our shell friends are all too often whim purchases that end with their abandonment in already full rescues or death from incorrect care.

1. Tribal Lands

Tribes and environmental groups have fought for decades against a proposed copper mine in an area of Arizona known as Oak Flat, which is a sacred site for a dozen tribes, including the San Carlos Apache. Now the Trump administration is pushing to fast-track a deal that would transfer ownership of the land, which is in the Tonto National Forest, to Resolution Copper, a firm owned by mining companies Rio Tinto and Billiton BHP.

2. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Shakeup

Just days after the election, Trump switched up the leadership of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which has a hand in regulating hydroelectric projects, as well as interstate transmission of electricity, oil and natural gas. Chairman Neil Chatterjee was replaced by fellow Republican James Danly, who has a more conservative view on federal energy policy.

3. Hamstringing Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF)

The Great American Outdoors Act, a major conservation bill signed into law in August, allocated $9.5 billion to help fix national park infrastructure and permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund. But despite (falsely) hailing himself as a conservation hero at the law's signing, Trump has already begun undermining the legislation's effectiveness. An order signed by Interior Secretary David Bernhardt on Nov. 9 allows state and local governments to veto any land or water acquisitions made through the fund.

4. Dam Raising

On Nov. 20 the Trump administration finalized a plan to raise the height of Northern California's 600-foot Shasta Dam by 18.5 feet, which would allow for more water storage. The reservoir feeds the federally run Central Valley Project, which funnels water hundreds of miles south to cities and farms. That includes the politically connected Westlands Water District in the San Joaquin Valley, which formerly employed Interior Secretary David Bernhardt as a lawyer and lobbyist. The state of California has strongly opposed the effort to raise the dam's height because it would flood the McCloud River, protected as wild and scenic.

5. Pesticide Changes

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on Nov. 20 it was taking away a tool states can use to control how pesticides are deployed. The action could further endanger farmworkers and wildlife.

6. Migratory Birds

A gutting of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 took a big step forward at the end of November, clearing the way for the administration to finalize the rule change by the end of Trump's term.

7. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Auction

The Bureau of Land Management announced on Dec. 3 that oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would go on sale on Jan. 6, following a shortened time frame for the nomination and evaluation of potential tracts to be drilled.

8. Dirty Air

One week into December, the administration finalized its decision declining to enact stricter standards for regulating industrial soot emissions.

9. Border Wall

The incoming Biden administration has vowed to not build another foot of the border wall, but the borderlands ecosystem remains under threat as the Trump administration is continuing to push ahead. In some cases wall builders are even attempting to speed up the work.

10. Harming Whales and Dolphins

Trump may be leaving office, but marine mammals won't be able to rest easy. NOAA Fisheries issued a rule on Dec. 9 allowing the oil and gas industry to harm Atlantic spotted dolphins, pygmy whales, dwarf sperm whales, Bryde's whales and other marine mammals in the Gulf of Mexico while using seismic and acoustic mapping, including air guns, to gather data on resources on or below the ocean floor.

11. More Lease Sales

The Arctic isn't the only place where the rush is on to exploit public lands. On Dec. 9 the Bureau of Land Management updated an environmental assessment for a 2013 plan for leases to extract climate- and water-polluting tar sands on 2,100 acres in northeastern Utah. But then just days late it hit the pause button on the effort. While that one may be on hold, the administration did kick off the sale of leases for oil drilling on 4,100 acres of federal land in California's Kern County on Dec. 10.

12. Cost-Benefit Rule

One of the administration's biggest parting gifts to industry — the "cost-benefit" rule — was finalized on Dec. 9. It would require the EPA to weigh the economic costs of air pollution regulations but not many of the health benefits that would arise from better protections.

One of world's rarest dolphins is rebounding in Pakistan

In a secluded pocket of Pakistan’s Lab-e-Mehran park, the smooth waters of the Indus River break into circular ripples, and the head of a pale gray dolphin appears. The animal lingers briefly before diving back into the water, its dorsal fin gleaming in the sun. This quiet riverside park in the southern city of Sukkur, popular with families out for a stroll, is also home to the endangered Indus River dolphin, one of only four freshwater dolphin species left on Earth.

But a dam at the western end of the park restricts their ability to travel freely during the monsoon season, a crucial part of their life cycle.

It’s a similar story throughout Pakistan: Widespread construction of diversion dams called barrages have effectively destroyed the species’ habitat. The barrages were built in the mid-20th century to control flooding and provide irrigation, and in some cases have been repurposed for power plants. Now, they’ve not only cut off the dolphins’ ability to migrate; their diversions also can lead to dangerously low water levels. Once, the Indus dolphin swam across the Indus River and all of its tributaries, from the Indus delta near the Arabian Sea to the snowcapped Himalaya. Today, the 200-pound cetacean only occupies 20 percent of its original range. The remaining Indus dolphins are concentrated mostly in the Pakistani province of Sindh, in a 410-mile stretch of river between the Guddu and Kotri dams. Engro, an energy company that works with the thermal power plant connected to Guddu dam, did not respond to requests for comment about the dam’s impacts on the species.

Beyond dams, water pollution and industrial waste dumped into the Indus pose the gravest long-term threat to the dolphins. Studies have found DDT and other pesticides in the animals’ tissue, according to Uzma Khan, Asia coordinator for WWF’s River Dolphins Initiative. However, a rigorous government conservation program has educated local communities, rescued stranded dolphins, and is steadily increasing their numbers, Khan says. There are now 1,987 Indus dolphins in Pakistan, according to the most recent WWF survey, up from 132 animals in 1972. Another small population of at least seven animals live in India’s Beas River, an Indus tributary.

“If you go downstream from the Guddu [barrage], and you keep sailing, there comes a point where you see dolphins everywhere around you,” Khan says. “It’s overwhelming because they’re everywhere.”

At the same time, she says, “it’s a situation which can be challenging, because all these dolphins are just in one stretch of the Indus River.”

“A friend of humans”

Locally known as bhulan in the Urdu and Sindhi languages, the Indus dolphin “has been in the Indus for thousands of years, and is a mark of the Harappa civilisation,” says Mir Akhtar Talpur, a field officer for Sindh Wildlife Department, a government agency.

The Bronze Age civilisation, which blossomed in the Indus River valley, is known for its urban planning and advanced drainage systems. Modern peoples of the Sindh and Punjab Provinces are considered the Harappa’s direct descendants, and value the dolphin as part of their heritage.

Fishermen in these provinces tell an origin story for the species. In the legend, when a woman offers butter and milk to a mystic patron of the river, the waters part and she safely crosses to the other side. But once, she fails to make an acceptable offering—and the river spirit transforms her into a dolphin.

For fisherman Gul Mohammed Mirbar, the dolphin is a lifelong companion; he was 10 years old when he first saw one. On a sunny afternoon in February, he rows his wooden boat across the river at Lab-e-Mehran park, where he earns money giving boat rides to tourists and park visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the rare dolphin.

As the water softly laps against the rocky riverbank, a pink dolphin surfaces with a splash, then disappears beneath the water.

Though Mirbar considers dolphins part of the environment, he and fellow fishermen also regard the dolphins as competitors that eat the very fish that are the men’s livelihood.

“You have to really put in effort [in fishing], or else you can’t catch up with the dolphin. That’s how fast she is,” Mirbar says, adding that the dolphins target large and small fish alike.

Until hunting was banned in the 1970s, some fishing communities hunted the dolphin for food or for blubber that they mixed with oil to coat their boats. The WWF reports that each year in the area, at least one dolphin dies when it’s accidentally trapped in fishing nets.

In general, “the dolphin is a friend of humans,” says Khadim Hussain, a representative of a fishermen advocacy organisation in Taunsa, a city in Punjab Province. “And it doesn’t pose any harm to fisherfolk. When the dolphin hears the sound of fishermen’s engines on their small boats, it approaches and swims with them.” (Read about dolphins in Brazil who help fishermen make their catch.)

An animal suited for the river

The dolphin has evolved to thrive in the Indus. Its colors—brown, a range of grays, or rarely, a dusky pink—help the animal blend into the sediment-laden river. And it’s nearly blind, as sight is unnecessary in the river’s murky waters. (Read about the first new species of river dolphin found in a century.)

The animal relies largely on an internal sonar system that bounces sound waves off objects to find prey, navigate the river, and communicate with other dolphins. The sonar is so advanced that it can sense the difference between a dead or living fish.

The dolphin’s long beak easily snaps up fish and other prey. On its sturdy body, a small dorsal fin maintains stability as it swims.

The Indus River dolphin is one of just two species known to lie on its side and flap its tail, a behavior called side-swimming. The maneuver allows the dolphin to move between shallow pools of water in the dry season—but it can’t help the animal cope with the Indus River’s dams.

Before dams fragmented the species’ habitat, the dolphins would swim upstream to tributaries during the monsoon and return to the Indus in the dry season.

Some dolphins can still move through dams if its gates are open—particularly if the animal is young or small—but then they often get trapped in irrigation canals, shallow pools, deep ponds, and sometimes even fields, where they can starve and overheat to death. To the rescue

The Sindh Wildlife Department has spread the word to local communities to call a hotline if they spot a trapped dolphin in a pond or canal. Adnan Hamid Khan, the deputy conservator in Sukkur for the Sindh Wildlife Department, has participated in several rescues, perhaps the most notable in December 2019.

A dolphin calf had swum out of the river and beached in a field in Faiz Ganj Wah, more than 120 miles from Sukkur. Hamid Khan and his team placed the animal in his car, spraying it with water to keep it hydrated as they sped through traffic to release it back into the river. While the rescue was successful, it's unknown whether the animal survived.

The rescue process isn’t easy. For one, these marine mammals are very sensitive to loud noises and human presence, and can suffer from health problems such as high blood pressure when being evacuated. (Learn about the difficulties involved in rescuing wild animals.)

What’s more, faced with limited funding and outdated equipment, the small rescue team must get creative in saving dolphins—which often means investing their own resources, says Hamid Khan.

“In wildlife conservation, problems arise very suddenly. You have to give instant relief and make a decision in that moment on how you’ll resolve things,” he says.

What the rescuers lack in resources, they make up for in dedication.

Nazir Mirani, the son of a fisherman, has worked with Sindh Wildlife for 30 years; he has bite marks on his hands from past rescues. Mirani is the third generation in his family to help in conserving dolphins, offering the agency advice and knowledge from his years on the water.

“For generations, we’ve been living near the river and sailing in boats. We fish, and we take care of the dolphin,” says Mirani, as he sits in the shade of a tree and looks out at the sun-streaked river.

“In the past, some people used to eat the dolphin. My father told them, Don’t eat the dolphin, because this is an innocent animal, and it’s the beauty of the river.”

Finding solutions

Much about the Indus dolphin remains shrouded in mystery, including this: What happens to rescued dolphins once they’re set free in the river? Do calves find their mothers, for instance? (See beautiful underwater photos of freshwater animals.)

WWF has proposed putting satellite tags on dolphins to track their movements, learn more about their biology, and inform conservation efforts. “Every rescued animal needs to be tagged,” Uzma Khan says. “And we need to know, how many dolphins are dying?”

Another technology that could help conserve dolphins is planting “pingers” near the openings to canals. The devices make a ting ting sound, inaudible to humans, that dolphins avoid.

Pingers usually are used to warn dolphins away from fishing nets, says Uzma Khan, “but we want to test them near canals to see if they stop dolphins from swimming into them.”

For rescuers like Mirani, saving the Indus River dolphin is a civic responsibility. He remembers the gharial, a crocodile that once lived in the Indus but is now locally extinct. He doesn’t want the dolphin to suffer the same fate.

If that happens, he asks, “What will our children see?”
