A little branding package I put together for a hot shop/glass studio opening in Houston soon. They wanted to use "house on fire" imagery, and a balance of professional/high-end and approachable. They'll be offering studio time and classes to glassblowers of all skill levels, as well as glassware product lines. The owner/client sent me this photo recently -- this brass stamp will be used on the bottom of glassware products. Can't wait to see it in some glass... never expected to see my work in that context!
Tumblr media
Aaaand last but not least, here were my initial sketches for the project. We ended up with a combo of 6&7 that I really like, but I'm quite fond of #1 as well.

It's almost sad that when I tell my regulars I only make $14.50 an hour at a job where I do professional level graphic design and print work, they all get shocked and say I should be making more (I work at a locally owned print shop, and I love the job for the most part, I just hate how I'm rushed and hate certain clients).
WcDonads employees make more than I do. Gas station employees around here make more than I do. And I honestly feel quite jipped because I was told to go to college. Get a degree. Find a job in the field I go to school for and I'll be set (I'm one of those "zillenials," too young to be a millenial but too old to be gen z). Some people say i should be thankful, $14.50 is a lot, but cost of living where I'm at is at least $20/hr. Granted, my college is completely paid for so I don't have student loans to worry about and I'm happy I have graphic design and photography experience. But when I'm at work and I feel the bald patch from where my hair has been falling out from stress from workload, it makes me feel like I was tricked.
I'm so conflicted. Like I said. I like this job. When things aren't busy it's wonderful. But those are becoming fewer and farther between where stuff has completely reopened from Covid and more people want printing for events and sales.
And I've met wonderful people! And learned about small businesses in my community I would have never known about otherwise! I love getting to make nice designs and print beautiful art every day. One of my current friends I've met copying her artwork for her! My gifts to my family have been photo prints and even signs for my dad's workshop that I've gotten printed at a discount and they're all loved so much. And I don't have to wear a uniform - jeans and a t-shirt of my choice every day!
But I've also been yelled at over small shit like maps not being printed on time, or how the color on a flyer isn't as "vibrant as it is on screen," or told to hurry up on a yard sign that someone decided they needed today rather than next week, or have a someone chew me out because I haven't even had time to print three sheets of mailing labels because I've had to hold the hand of a very picky woman who wants her rental guest book to look "just right" yet can't be assed to learn how to use a computer on her own. I've had packages thrown at me when I've said people need to pay to ship them. People getting mad over $.20 black and white copies and $.49 color copies. People saying they're going to get their business cards from PistaVrint because it's cheaper. People come to us and act like we're tech support - "Why is my computer not opening Wicrosoft Mord?! Why is my email not sending?! Why is my phone doing this?!" Like I don't know! Take it to Bye Best!
My manager hardly gets paid any more than I do and she's been with the business for almost 30 years and drives an hour each day to come to work. I only got bumped to $14.50 after my boss overheard I was interviewing at a college print shop that would have paid me $18 an hour. He couldn't even wage match! And I didn't even get the job.
I don't have funds to move to another location where I could find a better paying job in my field, nor would I want to as my family and community are here.
There is a pillow factory here I never knew about. They're hiring various positions starting at $19 an hour. Evenings and weekends mostly off, only needed to work if they need to fill a very large order. My friend started there this week and while she says she's physically tired, the environment seems nice so far and I'm so burnt out here that I've already asked her if she can get a word in for me to start there. More pay? And way less customer interaction? I could do that! But it sucks that I feel like abandoning what I like to do because of my pay grade and the stress I feel. I wish it was all different.

... are you a professional graphic designer?
Depends on your definition. I haven't really done any work for big official companies or anything if that's what you're asking, but I design all my products, websites, packaging, business cards, tags, etc. that runs my small artist business.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀𝓙𝐎𝐒𝐄𝐄'𝐒 𝓖𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐇𝐈𝐂 𝓒𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐒
⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀! REBLOGS ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED !
୨୧ ‧₊˚⠀i have been trying to find the right motivation and just overall meaning of making graphics , and while yes i do enjoy making them , i don’t like them just sitting in my camera roll to rot away. so , to start off small , i plan on selling prints i’ve made as A4 sized posters ( 8.3" x 11.7" ).
୨୧ ‧₊˚⠀also a quick disclaimer !! i will not be taking commissions until i’ve sold at least five prints from the examples i’ve provided. no , not five per example , just five in total. because , as i’ve said above , i don’t want these rotting in my phone , so of course i won’t want to make more and add to the clutter before putting the ones i’ve already made to use.
✿ 。 ׄ ׅ 𝟶𝟶 ׄ 𓈒
౨ৎ⠀◞⠀PRICES
✶⠀i’m a maximalistic designer , so it’ll be on a rare occasion that i take minimalistic comms , but bare with me as i try.
⠀⠀⠀•⠀soft ( your choice of mini or max ) — $6
⠀⠀⠀•⠀brutalism ( your choice of mini or max ) — $8
⠀⠀⠀•⠀video game ( your choice of mini or max ) — $10
✶⠀at max , im charging $10 (duh) , but tips are definitely appreciated and encouraged :3 !!
✶⠀i will also include freebies of your choose in the packaging , so when you send a comm also send your favorite idol , celebrity , or fictional character ( max up to 3 ) !!
✶⠀how i will take payments will be through zelle or cashapp ! & i will ask you to pay half of the payment before hand / when you order , and the rest of it once i’ve sent you the final draft before i go and print everything !
✶⠀sadly for right now i am only shipping within the US since that’s where i live and due to this merely being just a small side “hustle” of mine before i actually message a manufacture for my actual business.
౨ৎ⠀◞⠀EXAMPLES
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
✶⠀( specifically for these three ) sizes may vary depending on the poster dimensions , but if you would like yours to be the exact 210 x 297 / 8.3" x 11.7" then just let me know , no extra charge , of course :3 !!
✶⠀if you would like me to use any of the provided examples as templates for other preferred people ( ex ; instead of JT & cindy ➞ megan thee stallion OR instead of ada wong ➞ leon kennedy ) , just let me know and i’d totally be down to do that.
౨ৎ⠀◞⠀RULES
✶⠀please refer to my etiquette page before sending a commission !! all rules , do not interacts , and byf from that list most definitely still apply to my commissions whether or not this is writing / anime related. i still have a moral code at the end of the day , money doesn’t change that.
✶⠀i will only take orders on saturday / sundays since monday - tuesday im off work , meaning i can use those 48-72 hours to properly configure your print , then ship it out. though , this may change since i’m in the midst of trying to find a new job !!
✶⠀to properly order a print , send me an inbox without anon of your favorite tv series , and i will send you a dm once i’ve received your message to further discuss your commission !!
✶⠀i will / am willing to make prints of anyone and everyone that doesn’t fit my dni criteria. ( no’s ; chris brown , jay park , lana del ray. — yes’ ; megan thee stallion , choi san , laufey )
✶⠀when you receive your order in the mail , i will kindly ask you to send photo evidence of you getting the package and for your consent so i can make a post with the photo. if not that’s also fine , don’t worry. i just want to keep track of them through here since i am selling them through my tumblr.
౨ৎ⠀◞⠀ORDERING
✶⠀once i’ve officially dmed you about your order , i will send you a sort of form to fill out for your order. which, it will include me asking you info about your order , but more importantly i would appreciate it if you sent me an aesthetics board of some sort that would visibly give me somewhat an idea of what you want your print to look like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⤷ like this !
✶⠀in short , it should include a few pics of references / inspo pics you’d like me to either use or incorporate ( i won’t completely plagiarize them obvi , but i will keep them in mind when editing ) , and also the face claim / person the print is about ( ex ; ricky ) , then finally if you want one include a psd that i can color drop from to use as a filter over your print.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ : 𝟶𝟶 ꞌꞋ ۪ ׄ ﹏
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
' . : ⟣ all in all , i’d truly appreciate it if you did commission me. it would mean the world , honestly. it’s been my dream to not only make prints that i know people would hang in their room, but also be able to do those cute kpop trading freebie things. it’s stupid yeah, but so damn cute ugh i love it smsm.

It's suddenly striking me again just how much electronic music of all sorts is based on side effects.
One of the very first things that made electricity do things over long distances was the voltage amplifier. The fact that it has to exist at all is from a side effect: if you pass electricity down a wire, some of it gets lost on the way. A long enough wire, and it's all gone by the time it has to do anything on the other end. So there's the amplifier. The ideal case is that it takes a small voltage signal and spits out an exact copy, just louder (using a local power source to make up the difference). But once we had vacuum tube amplifiers, we discovered that they tend to oscillate — to start to produce their own alternating voltage signal — under different conditions of feedback. Folks like Theremin found this and harnessed it to create pitched tones that we wanted — but nobody had sat down and scratch-designed an oscillating tube.
All of electric guitar tone is the same. Players had to go electric to be heard over the rest of the band, and then noticed that turning up their amplifiers too far made the amplifiers top out and the sound become harsher in a pleasing way, and started chasing that "overdriven" tone. Later, folks noticed the neat "fuzzy" sound of playing through amplifiers or speakers damaged in certain ways, and created ways to replicate those sounds on purpose. People will pay thousands of dollars to make their guitar signal distorted in just the right ways — ways that no engineer trying to make an ideal amplifier would countenance.
The list is endless, and at multiple levels. On the electronics level, the volt-per-octave standard that analog synths use for pitch is made possible because a BJT transistor just happens to have a logarithmic response curve that can be tweaked into service. The volume envelopes that let a sound start softly and ramp up, or start loud and trail off, and make it so every electronic sound isn't just on or off at full blast, come out of slowing an amplifier down so it can't respond instantly.
On the instrument level, Roland created the TB-303 to be a play-along box; they wanted guitar players to buy it and pretend it was an electric bass. It was terrible at that. But once it was cheap, DJs discovered you could abuse it in ways Roland hadn't thought of, and invented Acid House.
After the fact, after these things were discovered, people have created ways to do them repeatably and reliably. My Eurorack VCO doesn't have a separate transistor that handles the volt-per-octave transformation, that's built into the chip; overdrive and distortion and fuzz pedals are widely available; there are people making acid-style basslines entirely in software who've never touched a TB-303. But while music electronics is now a big business, it's dwarfed by the greater electronics and computer industry, which is probably best illustrated by the fact that there are audio processing programs that take advantage of the math power of a 3d graphics card's GPU, and no 3d software packages that offload processing onto the sound card.

Don't Let the Packaging Get to You😭...
this is my follow-up on "2023 Is the Year to Become A Mindful Consumer"
We learn to buy things based on their packaging - the labels, the colors, graphics, etc. It gets both the logically minded and artistically minded alike. Looking beyond the packaging is not a matter of "not judging a book by its cover." It's important to outsmart the package's many ways of crying out "buy me!" Next thing you know, you've come home with a facial serum that breaks you out, a superfood powder that's 85% powdered rice grains, a drink you saw hyped up on TikTok, and a laundry detergent that claimed was "environmentally friendly" but the contents are just like the conventional brands. You might not even realize how many disappointing purchases you make like this. But if they fooled you, they've surely fooled others -- which fuels the company's marketing team to become more convincing & appealing.
First thing to address is your mentality when you enter a store or online shop. Realize that the point of the set-up is to get you to leave with as many products as possible, spending the most money possible, and leave with the thought of as many products as possible in your mind. If you struggle with sticking to just what you need, understand what is it about the store (its layout, employees, samples, etc) which cause you to be so easily convinced.
Next, understand what kind of customer you are. Place yourself in the shoes of a product marketer. What would you put on a package to sell it to yourself? How would you design that package? Who would you sponsor to convince you even further to buy that package? Look at the common denominators between the products you buy. Do you like going for the tried-and-true/popular brand, glam or sleek aesthetics, environmentally-friendly or ethical claims, more affordable option, latest trends, "doctor recommended" claims, or whatever else?
Also, understand what it means to make a purchase. Sure, everyone has heard that we vote with our dollars. But we don't always take full responsibility or power of our positions. Let's say that you like a product's contents except it's watered down with some waste product (like mineral oil), or you know that the company is deluding consumers with its claims & people are getting sick from it, or you learn that a shop aligns its aesthetics to look a lot like a small & mindful boutique but really it's just a normal sweatshop-run production. What can you do? The easiest thing you can do is not buy from that company (buy from a small business with great practices or make it yourself). You can leave reviews which share the truth. You can contact companies to see if they will consider different ingredients, materials, etc. You should talk about the company with others. You can even discreetly move products in a store so that their less noticeable to shoppers (as to decrease their sales. This isn't something petty, but to prevent funding dangerous or unethical items).
Finally, it's always good to have the habit of questioning, "Do I really need to buy this?" This is how mindless consumption really becomes mindful. It's better to find ways to make the product on your own. Normally, we look at the selection of products offered to us and consider, "What among this appeals to me?" Really, most of what we buy has either convinced us that we need it or it is the closest fit to a product which will serve our life. Creating an item which suits you exactly is better by far because it tends to eliminate more of the unnecessary evils and "unknowns" which come with our industrialized products.
Soon, you'll get in the habit of getting only what you need, being more resourceful & creative, seeing through the marketing tactics, learning about what goes into production processes, and finding fun in supporting true artistry & ingenious handmade creations. You'll begin to feel freer and less easily swayed. This is an important piece in taking control over what kind of lifestyle you live and the impact it has.

No. 12 - Airbus A350F Default Livery
Another Paris Air Show bonus! Airbus has unveiled the default livery for their new freighter variant of their already-popular A350 wide-body airliner.
Tumblr media
image: airbus
For those unaware, manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus tend to have "factory default" liveries used for demonstrations and the like. Generally they have different variants for different models, which can be as simple as a change of hue or as complex as a complete redesign.
This time around, Airbus held a design competition for their new freighter's default colors. So, hypothetically, this should be far more inspired than the average livery. Do I agree with their judgment?
Unless specified otherwise all this information is taken from Airbus's own webpage on the contest.
Okay, so who won the contest? The answer may surprise you! There are two (technically three) winners who submitted similar ideas. Those winners are a 57-year-old professional graphic designer...and a pair of brothers, aged 16 and 12.
That's right. There is a very real possibility that I come out of this with the opinion that a 12-year-old can design better planes than many adult professionals!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These were the winning designs. On the right is the Iversen brothers', and on the left is the one by Feehan, the professional graphic designer. As you can see, they both play on the same theme - delivery boxes.
I honestly think this is really brilliant. This is such an obvious idea that I can't believe it's not all over the place. The brown cardboard shipping box is such a universal association that it might be the first thing that pops into most people's head when cargo is mentioned despite the fact that cargo planes use pallets.
The two designs take different riffs on the theme. The Iversens' is covered in various labels and stickers and stamps, while Feehan's is covered in typical box signage like the classic 'THIS WAY UP' and taped together. It almost looks like someone has attempted to package the airframe itself for delivery, complete with an adorable postage stamp on the plane's cheek.
If I were Airbus, I also think I would have trouble choosing between the two. While the task of combining them without making the final design overwhelming is pretty daunting, these are both very well-done attempts on the theme. And combining them is the challenge. On their own both feel balanced, neither too sparse nor too busy, but combining them could quickly become a nightmare.
My one critique of both of them is with the writing itself. I think they both missed two very obvious options - either have the A350F written on a shipping label, or write it in sharpie as one does on a cardboard box. But that's beside the point. What did Airbus do with the designs?
Tumblr media
Hmm. Okay.
They absolutely kept the spirit of both original concepts. I really love "open here for business", that's adorable. (It's more visible from the back, which is an angle I'll post in a minute.) I like the shade of cardboard beige they chose. I do wish they'd picked a shade for the tape that looked more like tape on a box and less like barricade tape, and I wish they'd kept the messy, hand-applied look from Feehan's design rather than making it a couple of very neat, evenly-placed strips.
I do think they erred a bit too far on the side of decluttering. While I understand the reasons they did this, I wish there were a couple more loose postage tchotchkes scattered on the airframe, even if they're too small to be seen at a distance, because even if you need to get close to figure out exactly what that sticker says it still adds to the overall box vibe. That said, it is not bad enough that it completely ruins the look. I do, in particular, miss the little postage stamp on the cheek. It was very cute.
Tumblr media
Yep, this picture again! Look, they only gave me three to work with, and I had to use something for the hook.
I wish they hadn't included the blue on the underside of the plane and on the engines. It feels a bit out of place and clashes with the brown, and I think they could have just as easily used white.
My one main criticism, I think, is that they made it very very Airbus. They couldn't stomach the crooked tape; they had to make it neat. They had to make it professional. And yes, I get it, it's a branding thing - the carbon fiber tail.
Tumblr media
Airbus has a bunch of default liveries for various models of plane, and I might review those someday, but the only one relevant at the moment is among my least favorite - the 'carbon fiber' A350. The herringbone weave pattern itself would be fine (I like how it shows gaps of white underneath it) if it were done in some some sort of fabric design, or if it weren't just half of the plane, maybe, but in its current state it looks quite miserably...gamer desktop setup. And it does have a meaning, it's a reference to Airbus's heavy use of composite materials including carbon fiber (if anyone finds this worrying in light of recent events, just know that carbon fiber has been used in airplanes for a very long time with no issues because it's fantastically tensile despite being lightweight and is a wonderful choice for sealing pressure inside of a vessel but decidedly less so for resisting it from outside). I get the intent, I just think it doesn't look good.
Tumblr media
image: Viktor & Rolf
Also, they dressed her like this.
Tumblr media
I get why they kept the carbon fiber tail, and it doesn't look nearly as bad when it's mostly covered up and just poking out of the end of a cardboard tube like a leek coming out of a grocery bag in a stock photo, but I just...I wish they didn't.
Ultimately, I understand why they had to tone down the whimsy, make it neater, more professional, less relatable. More futuristic, but there's nothing futuristic about a cardboard box and there shouldn't be. Still, the idea they were given was so strong from the beginning, and they did resist the urge to scrub it of any character. They certainly did not improve the design of two literal children, but they also didn't fail to translate it.
All in all, they were given something to work with that could have been an easy A if they didn't have to be so...damn....Airbus. Still, it could be so much worse, and it is, undeniably, such a strong idea to begin with.
Final Grade: B-
For anyone paying attention: yes, this does mean that most airlines cannot meet the standard of concept and design set by literal children. But fair play to those children. I like their design.

[TRANSLATION] Art and Piece Issue 16 - Alan Chan about Leslie Cheung
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“He climbed out of the pool and asked me, 'Don't you just think my shorts look so gorgeous and sexy today?'”
A BEAUTIFUL TUNE IN THE MIDST OF EMPTINESS
Alan Chan - Renowned Hong Kong designer
I am Alan Chan. I am a designer, and designed multiple album covers for Leslie Cheung.
In the 80s and 90s, I designed album covers for several big names and superstars. Some people even called me Leslie's "go-to designer" because of that, and I also witnessed a lot of high points in Leslie's music career. As I work in graphic design as well as advertising, I don't use a very personal angle in creating an album cover. Rather, I use the artist as a starting point, to accentuate the public image the artist had at that point in time.
The first time I helped Leslie create an album cover was in 1984. Capital Artists was beginning to realise that they needed to "package" or "dress up" their artists and came to me for help. And like that, I worked with Leslie for the first time on his album Craziness. Leslie was a gentleman - once he even invited me to have dinner at his then-home in Taikoo Shing after the album was done. To be honest, Leslie and I weren't very close, but we were both very emotional people. We didn't need to say much to understand each other. It was quite fun working on Craziness though. At the time Capital Artists was still quite new and our budget was quite small. The waistcoat, shirt and bowtie that Leslie wore during the photoshoot were actually mine, I just lent them to him. Fortunately, they fit.
I still remember when Florence Chan, Alex Chan and I waited outside the recording studio from noon until late night. When we heard the finished product of Sleepless Night, I really couldn't help but let out a "WOW" in my heart. We knew that this song would make him a superstar. Later when we went to Japan for the Summer Romance photoshoot, I had my eye on a pair of shoes while shopping there. When I went to pay, I found out that gor-gor had already kindly bought them for me. It's an unforgettable memory of mine. Those pair of shoes are almost completely worn out but I still keep them.
I don't really know a lot of artists, but Leslie is definitely the most artistic one. You can see this even in the details of his everyday life. When he moved from Repulse Bay to Kadoorie Hill, he did all of the interior design himself. The furnishing was very tasteful - he just knew how to pick and arrange elegant furniture. He was also a really easy person to communicate with about creating. We both trusted each other a lot in the design process. I knew very well that at some point, o matter if it's singing, acting, or any other sort of artistic approach, an artist should be able to think for themselves and not just follow the crowd.
Just like for the later Leslie '89, Leslie himself took the album cover photo, while I added some finishing touches and colour with aerosol paint. Or take For Your Heart Only. He knew what he wanted to do from the start and even prepared his own outfit. When he arrived, he put on the ring his lover gave him for the photoshoot, so in the end we used a more soft way to handle the cover in order to show Leslie's pure, loving side. Rather than expressing it to the fans, I feel like the concept of the album was for Leslie's own heart. Virgin Snow's aesthetic and typography doesn't look outdated even today. Final Encounter is also really worth remembering - I constructed a ten-or-so feet tall podium and used a vertical ladder to climb up there and take photos, it actually wasn't very stable or safe.
Mirages exist in all of entertainment business. All performances will have parts where we are "pretending" and this is called showmanship. The personality of an artist shows through your showmanship. I felt that the natural, creative energy that Leslie had was unique. No other artist had it. Leslie's beauty came with a sort of feminine sexiness, it was soft-spoken, and he wasn't afraid to show off his attractiveness. I remember during the photoshoot for the Leslie album cover, he climbed out of the pool and asked me, "Don't you just think my shorts look so gorgeous and sexy today?"
Not everyone can be him.

hi sweet miya! happy friday!! 💛 if you and armin were going to open a business together, what would it be?
Ohhh! Such a fantastic question!! I already run a small business so it's definitely not out of the question that we'd ever open one together! He's also a very talented writer, a very creative person too! I'd imagine we could probably make some really cool decorative items like prints, maybe even jewelry, key chains and the like that are all ocean based and themed! I think he'd be pretty good at graphic design in my mind, and with his knowledge of the sea in my modern AU being a marine biologist I think we could come up with some adorable stuff!! I know not a lot about sea life, but I'm sure with his help I could make some adorable prints or stickers! Maybe every package would come with like, a card of cool fun facts about whatever sea creature they chose! I think Armin would thoroughly enjoy writing those out. Plus who doesn't love cute fish stickers?? He might also start his own small business on the side, hiring tutors and himself to give out helpful yet affordable classes for getting by in school and stuff! Maybe even refurbishing textbooks too to sell them at a way lower price. I think he'd like to help people like that, spread the learning experience to those who might not be able to afford it usually! Thank you for the ask Amira!!! ❤️❤️❤️
