“Wait a minute… hold on a minute here,” said Stan, arms waving about in confusion, “so you two have met before?” Ford frowned and studied her. Her hair, her grab, her eyes. Her face lined with hardship but still looking hopefully at him. His head hurt and the longer he looked at her the more his heart hurt. He felt like crying but couldn’t understand what made him so damn emotional… no, stop. His memory was intact. There were nothing to say they had met before. Nothing except for a gut feeling. He needed to be logical about this. You can’t just replace facts with feelings. This person was still a stranger. “Of course I haven’t.” he said after a pause. “I’m sorry but I don’t recognize you I believe that this is some big…” The woman stepped foreword and pulled back her right sleeve. A glowing blue tattoo was imprinted on her forearm. A glowing blue tattoo exactly like his. “…misunderstanding.” He finished with a murmur. She stepped closer, slowly. Her eyes still sad. Her feet crunched on the cold gravel. The light from her arm grew brighter as she stepped closer. Ford’s light grew brighter as well. She held her arm up and Ford subconsciously held up his. Their forearms were held inches from it each, side by side, and Ford could deny it no longer. It was a perfect match, a compliment to his own tattoo. The markings seemed to fit his exactly. Like two pieces of a puzzle fit together. It was beautifully complex, more complex than a branding. It was intricate. If there was any doubt in Stanford’s mind it disappeared when she pressed the side of her arm to his. Her skin was cold, and Ford watched in fascination as the lines intertwined with each other and shone with magical radiance. He tore his gaze away from the tattoo, eyes wide with shock as he looked at her. Her dark eyes met his with sad understanding. With resignation. “You may not remember me,” she said, “but I don’t think I could ever forget you.”

NEW VIDEO ON MY CHANNEL!!

I recently had the chance to talk with Ethan Marak of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, about his work on the Gravity Falls episode Little Gift Shop of Horrors.

He shared some great new info on the stop motion process and never before seen photos from the set.

Below is a transcript of what I asked and his answers...

1. How did you get involved with Gravity Falls and were you a fan of the show beforehand?

I was working as an Animation Director at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios when this project came my way. The studio producers would cast Animation Directors to projects that were a good fit, and my known love of classic stop-motion animation in the Ray Harryhausen style made them consider me for this job.

2. Alex Hirsch mentioned in the GF box set that they contacted you directly about working on the show? What was that process like?

As I recall Alex was very into the idea of using stop-motion for this episode and he was very enthusiastic and excited visiting the set and seeing all the puppets and sets. When we translate an established 2d animation to stop-motion, there are a lot of creative considerations and decisions that need to be made for the designs and animation style to work. As I remember Alex trusted us to guide that process, and was flexible with any small limitations that came up.

3. Additionally, he mentioned that Disney originally did not want to do stop motion due to the cost and so Alex said he inquired about frame by frame costs and looked through everything that was done to see if it would fit the budget. How did that whole situation affect the filming and in turn, what was it like working with Alex and the GF team?

I wasn’t involved in any aspect of the budgeting for the project so I’m not sure what give-and-take with Disney occurred to make the numbers work for stop-motion. I don’t remember feeling like the shoot was under-funded.

4. How much creative freedom did you have in regards to the episode? Were things planned out beforehand or did the crew let you come up with ideas for the stop motion as you went along?

The team from GF provided character designs, storyboards and backgrounds. It was our job to create the puppets and shoot the animation in a way that fit into the background plates convincingly. I can’t remember for sure, but I think GF did the final compositing themselves. Everything is meticulously planned out in stop-motion animation, so that we don’t spend time building or shooting anything that isn’t going to be on screen. We had a lot of freedom as far as the style of the animation, and we were going for a cartoony look that worked for GF but also paid homage to Harryhausen, which meant paying more attention to the weight and subtleties than we might on other projects.

5. Were there any scrapped/deleted or cut aspects of the animation that did not make it into the episode? These can be scenes either planned out or animated that never made the final episode.

Not that I recall, no.

6. Would you be okay with sharing any behind the scenes photos, videos, memories, stories or more from your work on the episode that would be okay to be public now? These can be of the shoot, interesting stories or trivia about it, crew reactions, set up, etc. I understand completely if that is not possible but it would be great to learn about/see the animation process for this episode, the sets, characters, etc.

I’ll let you know if I ever find the behind the scenes photos I took.

Side note: Ethan did find a ton of photos to send to me that you can access here or as I shared below...

However, there were several I was asked to not share, such as behind the scenes images of the character designs and storyboards of the animated version of the monsters that was used to help map out the movement of the stop motion. Those are internal works that are not allowed to be shared and I will sadly not be able to. That said, @robertryancory shared these designs of the character publicly years back that look very similar to what I was sent. But what I was shown were colorized versions and almost final looks of the characters.

7. Do you still own the models or sets made for this episode? If so, what condition are they in (and if possible could a photo(s) be provided)?

I checked with the studio and as far as I can tell the puppets were given back to Disney at some point. There was a brief period where I remember the puppets were displayed in the lobby at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.

8. Overall, what were your thoughts on working on Gravity Falls, the episode overall and the show later on? If Alex Hirsch or another GF crew member from it were to ask about helping in work on a new project, be it for GF or another show, would you do it?

I really enjoyed working on the episode and it is a stand-out project for me! It came out really beautifully and the GF team was really kind and respectful to us, and genuinely interested in our process. I’d absolutely partner with Alex on something else if it came up.

9. One extra question; Did you work on the mini stop motion bumper for Disney XD as well? If so, what was that like and what ideas were made for it that perhaps did not make the final promo?

Yes I directed that spot. It was another really cool project that gave us the ability to bring GF to life in stop-motion. The Stan puppet was amazing and looked so good- and our animators really brought him to life. We went though an extensive design process for the XD logo creature before deciding on the version you see in the spot. The goal was to make it look convincing as a taxidermy creation that Stan would have built, and to work in as many little eyeballs and body parts as possible that could move around.

There is an ache inside of him.

In the outskirts of the Avidya forest, a figure wanders. He looks around, almost as if haunting the place—but all he is looking for is a way to pass the time his immortality has for him. The owls coo, the foxes hide, the shroomboars notice him only to run for it in the opposite direction, and the wanderer thinks that even animals are scared of him. But he supposes this is a peaceful moment in the otherwise tumultuous day that Lesser Lord Kusanali has given him. Ever since she registered him in Vahumana, he has been bombarded with countless assignments to complete, both academically and non-academically. With all of them complete, he has come here to ponder the current trajectory his life is heading towards.

There is an ache inside of him. A crawling feeling that snakes up his back and threatens to mouth all of the things he has done to the people that do not deserve it. It plagues his mind everyday—to the point that only the academic hustle and bustle of Sumeru quiets everything down. But he dislikes those, he tells himself. A negative cannot embrace a negative.

He wants everything to be forgiven, for deleting yourself from the Irminsul does not pardon all your wrongs. Lesser Lord Kusanali will never find out. He thinks of her as a good archon, and one who would not intentionally invade the minds of her subjects. She objects to killing him, but he disagrees. He must be shut down— killed —for him to be forgiven.

She tells him that his punishment must be to live out his days struggling with this concept of purposeless life, and to find the answers to why the forgiveness he yearns for so much cannot be obtained in another way.

He thinks everything at this point is merely pointless.

He arrives at the top of a cliff. He knows it will not give him the death his ache craves, but it will reward him at least with the beautiful bliss of unconsciousness. The dark bottom is not completely visible to his perfectly crafted eyes. It appears and disappears when he moves, shrouded in mist. He puts all his weight onto the foot dangling off the edge, and gravity pulls him down. Only moments later, he feels the wind in his face, hair, and the clothes that wrap around his body. He waits patiently for the time he is to be unconscious, and hopes that when Lesser Lord Kusanali finds him in this state she can finally muster all the pity inside of her to kill him under the name of mercy.

His head makes contact with a hard object. It knocks him unconscious.

You awake by an alarming loud noise that can only be done by metal. Something small hits you on the back of your head, and thus you quickly move your head from your arms that play as your pillow. You turn your head and see something, no, someone , just a few meters from you. A scream erupts from your throat, and you stumble out of your chair, falling to the floor after failing to grasp your desk for support.

The person is wearing blue and white clothes—his black and purple hair is disheveled and sprawled with dirt and debris. His eyes are closed as he lies on the ground dormant and silent, pieces of roof and wood fashioning themselves as his bed. The moon shines on him like a theatrical spotlight, and when you look up, your eyes meet your broken ceiling and the elevated noises of the Avidya forest.

Your heart does not cease with its rampant thudding. You are scared, nervous, and terrified of this scene before you. The person seems to be unconscious. But even someone unconscious can be dangerous. You decide to catch a closer look of his face. And he, indeed, is a figure with a fair face. His indigo hair frames his delicate face perfectly, and his slender body molds onto the debris. All of this finishes the conclusion that you have made that he is unharmed, completely.

How can this be?

The adrenaline sets in, and with a shaking countenance, you gently poke the face before you with your index finger. You realize the young man is cold to the touch, but instead of soft pliant human skin, you feel the coldness of… wood? To the first touch it seems hard and cold, but the more you poke his cheek with a gentler push than before, the more you realize it is soft and pliant, but not quite like human skin.

So this man is not human then?

His eyes open, bare to the world, showing you the beautiful indigo colors that match his hair. You shriek and pull back, shuffling your entire body from him. He seems familiar to you, somehow.

"Who are you?!" was all you manage to squawk out, leaning towards the exit of your warehouse, to make a run for it if in case this… strange thing makes even a sign that tells you that death is what he wants for you.

"Fuck, I knew it wouldn't work, but I did it anyway," he mumbles under his breath, glancing at you as if uncertain if you heard it or not. "I know that this may all seem scary, but hah, believe me I mean you no harm."

He says that too casually as if this situation is perfectly normal for him. You narrow your eyes at him, still stepping away—cautious and senses hyperactive in order to discern anything more out of the ordinary. You actively look for signs that may be a cause for running away and calling a forest ranger, but nothing appears.

Your shaking has ceased, with your heart calming down to only a slight beat. You take a deep breath before saying, "Wha...what are you? A human would not be able to survive that fall…"

You are not afraid. Not at all. Years of studying in the Akademiya have taught you that it is not only humans that live in this world. Gods, yokai, adepti, ghosts—everything may exist as long as the Ley Lines willed it. You remember that you were in that class with Cyno, who before was merely a student and not the General Mahamatra. Other students merely dismiss them as legends, and some believe that they had ceased to exist long ago when the seven divine seats were taken by the archons. Despite graduating from Kshahrewar with flying colors, you adopted an open-minded approach to the subject of other intelligent species, rather than flatly dismissing it as an anomaly in the field of rationality.

"Are you sure you want to ask me that question? I could hurt you, you know," the young man now sits up, brushing away the small debris and dust from his clothes before smirking at you. "I won't, but you should be careful of what you ask for, don't you Akademiya scholars have a protocol for this?"

Ah! You remember him! He was the representative of Vahumana during the Interdarshan Championships. You recall him dominating the last round, but still gave up on the fight for the diadem, and left shortly after it was clear that Kshahrewar, your darshan, had won. You saw him in Aaru Village shortly after, with the Dendro Archon by his side. What a coincidence!

"You won't hurt me. I saw you with the Dendro Archon right after the Interdarshan Championships. That already tells me that you are somewhat of a follower, or… a subordinate of hers," you breathe out, crossing your arms. You feel mildly annoyed as you realize the amount of cleaning you will have to do.

Great , you think, as if I'm not rushing this thesis.

You continue before he can answer, "Do you really want to hurt me, an Akademiya worker? The Dendro Archon has eyes everywhere, you know…"

He clicks his tongue and glares at you.

Ah, so I am right?

He brings up his knees to his chest and stands. He dusts off the dirt, dust, and grime from his body. You take this chance to move back and observe his figure once more. He is beautiful. An ethereal kind of beauty. Perhaps, he should be walking among gods that share his godlike grace, and not among the fragile mortals that you belong in. He is completely unscathed, and there is no bleeding, only small clothing tears here and there, but no blood nor broken bone.

This young man is definitely not human.

"Bye," he waves, heading towards the heavy doors of your warehouse.

You gape. You can just hear the smirk on his voice when he chuckles darkly.

"Hey, come back here! You caused this, now you clean it!"

"I don't trouble myself with the affairs of mundane mortals like you," he spat, turning around and glaring at you from head to toe. "I have better things to do."

"If you weren't going to meddle with mundane mortals like me, then you shouldn't have jumped and tried to kill yourself!" you glare at him back, still cautious of him. You think about the Interdarshan Championships, and how he would have annihilated most—if not all—of them if they weren't all against him simultaneously. It serves as even more evidence to your theory that he is not human. This is the cherry on top of a marvelous cake.

He rolls his eyes and places his hands on his hips, "Fine."

With a sigh, he approaches the aftermath of his fall, and stares it down for a few minutes of silence, before asking in a hushed voice, almost as if he regrets having jumped, "Do you have a broom?"

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Almost exclusively Danny Phantom. I have one Gravity Falls Crossover and one DPxDC crossover as well.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Summoning: When Jack and Maddie Fenton tried to summon the King of All Ghosts, the last thing they expected was the sudden appearance of a very familiar, very human boy wearing spaceship pajamas and with a toothbrush halfway to his mouth.

Double Discovery: After accidentally shooting Phantom with an anti-possession gun, Maddie finds she has a lot to learn about both Danny Phantom and Danny Fenton. Eventual Revelation Story.

Borrower Danny: A teeny tiny Danny starts living in Wayne Manor

4. Fangs or No Fangs: For Phic Phight 2021. Jack and Maddie know that Danny is Phantom. They saw him transform and they knew they should talk about it with him. But…even after two weeks, that conversation feels impossible. And so Jack and Maddie have a plan: a trip to the planetarium to cheer Danny up, to finally see him smile again, and to pave the way for the truth.

5. Below the Greenhouse: For the Phic Phight. Prompt by Avearia: Maddie discovers the depths of Vlad's obsessions when she stumbles upon his secret lab. Despite the shock, part of her almost isn't surprised by the stolen Fenton Tech, the ripoff ghost portal, or the eerie Holo-Maddie—but the clone she finds floating in the pod at the back of the room? That's another matter entirely.

I generally try to! I love hearing what readers have to say and will happily answer questions, as long as I'm not giving out spoilers. XD

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Well, my second long fic, Hope Can Be a Heavy Thing to Hold, ends with the main character dying so....

Seriously though, I do have a sequel to this story planned as my next major project. Maybe we'll all find out things aren't what they seem. 😜

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I love angst with a happy ending so a lot of my fics end happily. I don't think I can pick which one is happiest. This one has a special place in my heart though.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have before but not very often. I normally just delete mean comments without replying.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Nope.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I have written a two before. I think Borrower Danny is the craziest one.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Luckily I haven't as far as I know.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Kinda? One of my fics, The Danny Program, was based on an au which @thesoulspulse came up with. Later, Soul wrote a longer version of that au which followed a lot of the same stories beats as my fic and I beta'd.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

I'm not a huge shipper. Dark Gray (Dan Phantom and Valerie Gray) is something of a guilty pleasure though.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

My series, Life and Death is all Perspective, has been a bit of a struggle. I get close to thinking it's done and it keeps growing. 😂

16. What are your writing strengths?

I'm very good at writing emotions and dialogue.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Fights scenes are definitely a struggle since I have trouble visualizing them in my head.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I only speak English fluently so I probably wouldn't write dialogue in another language.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

I feel like I've told this story before but the first fic I wrote was a Doctor Who fic for a school assignment in high school. It was for one of those warm-up exercises in English and my teacher loved it. XD

i know you’re getting a lot of bill asks but i gotta let you in on some top tier bill content since you’re new to gravity falls :D! i recommend looking into most of this stuff once you finish s1 or even 2 bc it can get a little bit spoiler-y about the specifics of his role in the show. anyways so here’s the recommendations: flat dreams on a03 is an amazing fan backstory fic for bill. although it’s not officially his backstory, it fits really well and helps break down his character in almost canonically feeling way. definitely listen to it’s gonna get weird! it’s not in the show but is technically official, it just didn’t make the cut. it’s a song by niel cicierega; he also wrote a pitch for the intro for the show definitely watch the deleted scenes for the original concept of bills introduction. there’s a lot of silly+cute storyboard shots of him there. and lastly, highly recommend you check out the reddit bill Q&A! it’s honestly so fun and hilarious +done by alex so it’s like if bill really were on reddit

Ok on why ITNL 15 was so technically difficult.

Under a cut for ppl who haven't read it & wanna keep it a surprise

So writing traditional action ends up feeling like choreography. I plan out the steps following the motion that feels the most natural. It can be tricky sometimes, but mostly in figuring out how to describe an action I see in my mind. Overall, I end up writing traditional action really quickly actually bc it's Fun and Exciting and it Flows

What went down in ITNL 15 was not traditional action. Really, it was an unconventional torture scene.

So the trickiness came from multiple things. First & honestly one of the hardest things was getting into the head of a madman. Someone who will gleefully kill a lot of people just to hurt someone psychologically. Someone spiteful, sadistic, and just having so much fun with it (but also not Actually having that much fun, bc he was also just Really Angry)

First time writing him, too. So I had to find a new character's voice On Top of exploring the whims he would follow when literally torturing someone.

And then we get to the actual actions of it. There was no choreography because there was no dance to it. No flow of motion. There was a Burst at the start of the interaction, but then it all just Stops. Vash is forced to take it at Legato's pace as he toys with him.

That was a huge part of how tricky it was. Following the thread of where Legato was taking it & being unable to push things along with Vash. Vash was just along for the ride, existing just to be toyed with. Falling right into Legato's expectations with his reactions...

Except for two parts. And these were some of the trickiest.

When he managed to break out of the control Just A Little Bit. And then when he's on his knees, emotionally stripped bare, and decides to go for the one jab that he knows will Hurt Him just as a stubborn "fuck you", since he didn't have any other way to take autonomy in that scene.

He pays for it. The paragraph where Legato broke Vash's nose was the one that took me 50 fucking minutes to write. Which, on that note, I can show a screenshot of my working through it!

Final paragraph: Legato's face twisted in instant fury. His hand tightened harshly in Vash's hair, using it as a grip to bash his nose into his knee with a sickening crunch.

And the progress pic ^ lmao. Something I do while trying to puzzle out wording is push the old version down & start working on a new version, but not deleting the old yet in case I wanna switch back or otherwise re-use any of the wording.

There ended up being about 15 of these discarded lines. 111 words of discarded text. Until I finally settled on the version in the thing.

Another thing I focus on a lot while writing is the motion of the words, and that was so much of the struggle here. Such a simple moment, you would think. He's just breaking his nose. But describing it in a way that is Concise while also communicating the gravity of it AND the motion of the words themselves. It's a lot to consider. And it's such a miserable moment for Vash, it was so hard to get it to a point I was satisfied with.

I'm pretty proud of how the scene turned out, in the end. Maybe not 100% perfect. There are definitely a few points that feel held together with duct tape and tooth picks. Then other parts where I'm just like "holy fucking shit, I wrote this???" An interesting combination, but I feel like that's writing in general.

And! It seems like my work paid off! People seem to have enjoyed the chapter, which makes all the work feel a lot more worth it. It's a nice feeling to know all that time is appreciated.

Yeah . A Lot went into this scene. Definitely out of the bounds of anything else ive written before. But I think I can confidently call this a success 😌

Any else is totally cool to ask for! I may take a while to get to every request, but I will get through all of them! If there is some reason I won’t write it, I will be sure to explain and ask if you want to change it so I can write to as close to the request as possible.

You can have the request be as long or short as you need, but the less detail you add the more I’m likely to improvise and add my own details. If that’s ok with you then make it as short as you need! You can even specify length if you want and I’ll try my hardest to keep it and get it to there. You can also specify ships (any that are in my Shiplist, and if it’s not there just ask and I might anywho), characters, and any triggers that you might have so I don’t accidentally bring any of that up.
