☆ ALICIA’S MONTHLY MEDIA MENTIONS: June `22

hello! as promised, I’m back with another monthly media mentions post! June has been a bit of a crazy month - I got another job (which I actually like - hooray!), my grandma is staying over and needs taking care of, my sister crashed the car LMFAO, and I’ve just been trying to help out around the house a bit more. unfortunately I didn’t create as much art as I wanted to - most of my time was consumed editing that damn art critique video (like literal weeks). but, this is the media that got me through a tough month! cheers to another summer ☀️

Umbrella Academy (season 3)

this show is so gd entertaining. I think I finished this season in 2 days? it was great! super fun scenes and special moments between characters. Robert Sheehan and Ritu Arya are perfect for their roles - Ritu especially is so charismatic and I hope to see her in more projects!

Street Woman Fighter

I'm not sure why I didn’t watch the episodes as they came out last year, but I’m so mad I didn’t! these ladies slay and I'm so happy that dancers have been getting more recognition through this show. I want Monica to be my mom and Lip J to be my auntie. everyone in this show is so COOL I can’t even describe how awestruck I am with them all. Aiki - give me one chance PLEASE

Haikyu!!

I've tried to watch this show a few times - with my sister, by myself, but for some reason or another did not continue watching it. I restarted it again because my lovely friend loves it and recommended I watch it - so I did :) it’s super cute and also has me missing my volleyball days >:(

Stranger Things (season 4)

I'm sure this has been on a lot of people’s watchlist - I actually wasn’t planning on watching this season, but saw the clip from that one scene in ep 4 and I changed my mind. Either this or season 3 has been the best so far, but I can’t say just yet because I’m still waiting on the second part! Sadie sink supremacy.

I didn’t like RUN2U the first time I heard it, which is why it took me some time to listen to the album. but the STAYC girls don’t disappoint. I love the guitar and the feeling of nostalgia I get when I listen to YOUNG LUV. 247 and SAME SAME have lovely vocals. RUN2U is also growing on me, but I will say I do like their other title tracks better in comparison.

Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) - Kate Bush

I had kept getting recommended this song in my YouTube home page and later realized it was because it was featured in the best scene of Stranger Things ever. Lyrics hit, music hits. I want to listen to this as I sit and cry during blue hour.

Run BTS - BTS

kind of gives Disney channel diss track, but slaps nonetheless!! oh how I missed listening to new BTS music. Rapline killed it!

Glimpse of Us - Joji

why does this man make such sad music. I'm so interested in how he shifted his career and image. another track I’d like to cry to. also, this music video has such a frightening, chaotic energy, but the way it progresses towards the climax of the song is surprisingly moving. 10/10

Eat You Up - BoA

this song is so gd fun to listen to. I was too young to get into Y2K era artists, but this song in particular brings its revival full force.

lately I’ve been into jazzier songs in general, and added this onto my playlist after watching Rihey singing it on Knowing Bros! idk how to describe it...but I feel grown listening to this song, which is kind of ironic haha

can you believe i’ve never watched the What is Love mv? it’s literally my favourite twice song, too... for some reason when I listen to this song (and other Twice songs) I cry...? but out of happiness...? anyways, I realized I never even watched the mv so I did. amazing. fantastic. life-changing. genuinely think this was the inspiration for thank you, next and that one opening scene in euphoria season 2. What is Love is phenomenal. jihyo’s bridge brings me to tears.

I was looking back at photos from my trip to New York back in 2018 and found some from when I visited the MOMA. Got to see some of Bruce Nauman’s neon light art pieces. I wish I could go back - I think I would have appreciated the opportunity more.

Haikyuu as friends to lovers dynamics.

☀️ SUGA and you were the kind of friends that really only hung out with your other shared friends, until one day when you finally hung out alone and he kissed you. From then on you were practically shoving your other friends out the was too hang out with him -plus maybe a little 😘-

☀️ DAICHI and you met at the beginning of high school, staying acquaintances until year three where you finally became good friends. It wasn’t until your second year of college that daichi finally worked up the guts to ask you out.

☀️ TANAKA he asked you every month from the moment you met him, even when you became best friends; he brushed it off more as a joke then however. Every time you said no until you two third year in high school where you finally realize you were in love with him.

☀️ HANAMAKI and you were the kind of friends that would giggle in the back of the classroom and make stupid jokes when the teacher spoke but you never seemed to speak outside the classroom. You stayed friends like that until you both got detention and ending up making out when the supervisor left the room.

☀️ OIKAWA and you could barely be called friends, people thought you hated each other but really it was because you guys were only nice behind closed doors. eventually, when you oikawa were fighting one day, he kissed you in front of the whole school. He said it was to ‘shut you up’ 💀

☀️ SAKUSA and you had a deep friendship, you understood him like no one else and knew when he needed space; you two were best friends but you didn’t spend all your time together, you didn’t need too, you knew he was your best friend. ☀️ KENMA and you were the type of friends who listened to each other, there’d never been much talking between the two of you, mostly just comfortable silence. Kenma ended up asking you out- with kuroo’s un needed help obviously-

☀️ KUROO asked you out the first time you met, you’d said no; you became friends from that point on. After you’d been friends for two years you ended up asking kuroo out. He still teases you about it.

☀️ TENDO and you were the chaotic best friends, the type that went out at three am to eight different McDonald’s and order like six burgers from each one, or the type to jump of a bride into river just because you felt like it. Tendo had always known he loved you, he just waited until you realized you loved him too

☀️ SUNA and you were less friends and more ‘I get high with you but that about it’ let’s just say that you were hanging out with him once and he nonchalantly offered to take you out, he did and you kinda just never broke up. Y’all got a good relationship though, he’s a king.

☀️ KITA was your brothers friend, and in turn became your friend. There was a lot of mutual pining before your brother found out and tried to fight kita, which ended in you punching your brother rather than him punching kita. After that your brother fucked off and you’ve been together ever since.

☀️ SAKUSA drives. You make him. He’s a really annoying back seat driver.

☀️ IWAIZUMI NO ONE ELSE CAN DRIVE YOUR CAR BUT HIM. You telling me that this man doesn’t look like the world tastiest snack when he’s driving.

☀️ MATSUKAWA lets you drive, mostly because he’s too tired and doesn’t want to have to pay a shit ton of attention.

☀️ SEMI he drives because he wants control of the music, you better hope your favourite song is one he likes too

☀️ TSUKISHIMA doesn’t drive, solely because he’d rather put his headphones in and ignore the entire world. He will if you aren’t up to it though. This man is a simp for you.

☀️ TENDOU DO NOT AND I REPEAT DO NOT LET THIS MFER NEAR A WHEEL!! HE WILL CRASH!!

☀️ OSAMU you both drive. Both of you believe it’s more convenient for you both to be the designated driver at any given moment.

☀️ TANAKA tells you that you can drive, he doesn’t want you to feel like he’s holding you back in any way. You make him drive most of the time.

☀️ SUGAWARA THIS MAN DOES THE MFING DRIVING, ALL SEXY MEN DO THE DRIVING.

Hoot by Carl Hiaasan

I bought this paperback used at least 10 years ago because it had owls in it. With the library closed, I am finally chipping away at some of the novels in my eternal to-read pile! This was quick and fun, if a bit predicable. One day Roy sees a barefoot boy running across a series of lawn as the school bus pulls away from the curb in his Florida town. Curious, Roy tries to figure out who he is and what he was doing. It turns out this mysterious runaway is trying to defend the burrowing owls who live on a plot of land slatted for development into a Miss Paula's Pancake House. Very much in the tone of Holes, though without the inter-generational curse. A good book for a young reader.

Dragman by Steven Appleby

This is a weird but delightful comic. It follows August Crimp, who has a secret superhero identity as Dragman. When he is wearing women's clothes he can fly, and he fights crime with his side-kick Dog Girl. Or he did, until he retired, got married, and had a kid. But now more than ever the world is in need of saving, because an inventor has developed a device that can remove people's souls and store them on small disks. People without souls continue living- sort of. But they have no joy, no personality, no opinions, and often no will to live. In addition to this, trans women are being targeted by a serial killer. August is drawn out of retirement and into the case, which is complicated, as he has never revealed his secret identity to his wife. Drawn a loose, sketchy style, this story is told in a mix of color comics for present-day scenes, monotone comics for flash-back scenes, excerpts from "officially licenced character comics" and sections of prose that describe the most violent incidents without any illustrations. I've never read anything quite like this before, but it worked for me!

Haikyu!! by Haruichi Furudate vol 1

It's been so long since I read a sports manga! This one is really fun! It gets right into the story very quickly. It follows Shoyo Hinata, a boy who is short but very good at jumping, who wants nothing more than to play volleyball. His middle school doesn't have a team but he manages to scrape together enough friends to enter exactly one competitive game. His little rag tag bunch is beat by a team with an ace player: Tobio Kageyama, who has the ironic nickname "King of the Court", because of both his talents but also his bad temper. When Hinata gets to high school he's so excited to finally be part of a real team. Imagine his surprise when he learns that none other than Kageyama is on the team too! Haikyu!! by Haruichi Furudate vol 2

Hinata, Kageyama and the teammates they've just met already have a practice game! It's against one of the top high schools in their area- and two of the members where on Kageyama's team in middle school. This is the beginning of a satisfying rivalry already in the making :) I love the way this author draws fast motion, I look forward to watching how he ups the ante, art wise, when we get to the more serious games.

Art Life by Catherine Ocelot

I read an English language edition of this that I can't find on Goodreads. It was strange. There were things I really liked about it, but overall I didn't feel like the book really went anywhere. It follows a bird-headed alter-ego of the author as she goes through life as a single mom. The best parts were conversations on the nature of inspiration and creative work with other artist friends. The more off the wall parts included a visit to a small publisher which is flooded knee deep in water, and scans of sketchbook pages supposedly part of the pitch packet for this very graphic novel. Very meta.

This remains a solid and very fun story! By the end of this volume we've finally met all of the members who will make up Karasuno's volleyball team for, I assume, the majority of the story arc. A great batch of quirky characters, some of whom struggle from over-confidence, some from nerves. All of them are diamonds in the rough, but finally they have a coach who is ready to polish them into brilliance.

Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

This is one of the best books I have ever read about science, and about a life. Jahren is a passionate and witty writer, and in this book she tells stories beginning with her strict Minnesota childhood in the 1970s, ending with her current career as a tenured professor and researcher at the University of Hawaii. She has loved both plants and the scientific process for as long as she can remember, but it was a long and hard road to turn those two obsessions into a livelihood. Jahren writes of working long hours as a hospital runner to pay for college; of meeting her best friend and future research partner in grad school on a soil study field trip; of upending her entire life multiple times to move thousands of miles on the promise of funding to build her own lab. There are short chapters woven through that explain with vivid, careful detail the lifestyle stages of a tree, and each stage is mirrored in Jahren's only human development. She doesn't shy way from discussing her own manic depression, the difficulty of her pregnancy, and the discrimination she faced as a woman in her field. But she also relishes in the joys of discovery, of breakthroughs, of adventure, of a fairy-tale like love romance and an eternal striving towards being her own truest, purest self. This book is going to join my self of favorite memoirs. I highly recommend it!

Voice Actor Soma Saito to Release His 2nd EP "my beautiful valentine" on February 9, 2022

The official website for voice actor/singer Soma Saito has announced that his second EP "my beautiful valentine" is set to be released in Japan on February 9, 2022. As with his previous second full album "in bloom" released in December 2020, he wrote all the lyrics and composed all the songs himself.

The detailed content of the album is currently unknown, but considering the release date and title, it can be imagined that it will be a Valentine's Day-themed album. The album's 3,850-yen first press limited edition set will include his new photo book.

As an anime voice actor, he is best known as Tatsumi in Akame ga Kill! (2014), Tadashi Yamaguchi in Haikyu!! (2014-), Hermes in Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? (2015-), and William James Moriarty in Moriarty the Patriot (2020-2021). He made his solo singer debut as the first artist from SACRA MUSIC in June 2017 and has released three singles, two full albums, and one EP.

I find it to be slight bullshit that there is only like 3 major forms of scars we see in the whole MHA anime, Dekus arms, Aizawa's eye, and All mights gut. What about Bakugo and Todoroki's burns. EVERYONES scars from fighting and encountering villains. Quirk malfunction scars, like Shoji's limbs getting fucking cut off, should leave scars..

I wanna write SemiShira where they did highschool and then went off to separate colleges, Semi went to America for Music, and Shirabu stayed in Japan to get his degree in medicine. But like after 4 years of Music School Semi comes back with his hair this like hideous Aqua colour that he was dared into dying by his roommate, Iwaizumi. Semi and Shirabu haven't talked in 4 years and so on his first night back he goes to a bar where he runs into this cute dude with Copper colored hair, it's pulled back into a messy bun. They end up talking as they drink, he talk about how he just graduated Music School in America and how he was originally from Japan, and the other guy talks about how he is currently working on all his prerequisites for med school. They did some casual flirting that night and then end up exchanging numbers with eachother and heading off there sepperate ways. The next day Semi goes to hang out with the Shiritorizawa third year Alumni, and Yamagata ends up bringing up how there Kouhai are doing. Shirabu gets brought up and so they all look at Semi and are talking and say to him "Did you know Kenjiro is working to be a doctor?" Then they keep talking about that until one of them pulls up a picture of Shirabu and shows it to Semi saying "This is what he looks like now." And Semi just slams his face down on the table and is like "Oh my god, I just spent last night flirting with Shirabu fuckin Kenjiro." And do the others at the table are just laughing there asses off, because The idiots that always fought in highschool were flirting with eachother without knowing last night.

STOP MOTION ANIMATION PROJECT

Working in pairs, me and a chosen partner had to create a ,minimum, 10 second stop frame animation based on any chosen project. Me and my partner (@georginaartjournel) decided to create a face however we didn’t want any of the features to take away from the centre point so we decided to create no face features, except the lips. Instead we added normal face shadows and highlights to maintain the image of a face. The lips we created were made out of card that we painted in red and clipped together with a pin to enable the movement of the mouth. We made he mouth move in time with one of my Haikyu poems as well as written the poem itself around the head, so that the viewer can read the poem . We tried to do this in a fun and interactive way instead of the same text/font. At the end we spilt the Indian Black Ink that we used for writing the poem, onto the painting and constantly took pictures of it dripping onto the face creating a cool effect in the stop motion.

EDITING STOP MOTION IN ADOBE PREMIERE PRO 1) Download all photos from memory card of used camera using a card reader, and put onto your computer. 2) Start new project in Premiere Pro, save it into the same folder that all your images/audio that you are going to use are placed in. 3) Press EDIT > PREFERENCES > TIMELINE choose each image to last 2 frames per second to ensure that the video runs smoothly through, 4)Drag all media into the MEDIA BROWSER on Premiere Pro. 5) Press NEW ITEM > SEQUENCE > OK This should then appear in the sequence window. 6) Ensure all media is in order that you want in the stop motion, if not rearrange. if you shot sideways you may want to rotate all the photos as well to have desired fit. When everything is checked to be correct, select all media and drag into sequence window. DONE! Overall I am very pleased with the outcome. I think we did a fantastic job and really thought that we thought outside the box especially by incorporating work from our other workshops such as the poem I wrote. We decided to challenge ourselves instead of going simple and that did show! The only thing to improve this animation is to overlap it with some audio of wither one of us reading the poem along with some simple background music.

Illustrated by the always prolific Francesco Francavilla and limited to 1,500 copies worldwide, the interior madness will be presented by the original series team, written by My Chemical Romance frontman and DC's Young Animal editor-in-chief Gerard Way and illustrated by multiple-Eisner-award-winner Gabriel Ba. As with our Batman #50 variant, the first copy purchased in-store will be cover price, with each additional copy available for just $10. It's also the perfect book to get signed by G at NC Comicon: Bull City in November!

This is truly another dream come truth for me. Umbrella Academy is hands down a desert island, top 5 series of all time (alongside Scott Pilgrim, DC New Frontier, All-Star Superman, and Casanova for those keeping track at home). I've even quintuple-dipped on Apocalypse Suite in deluxe hardcover, paperback, single issues, mini hardcover, and digital, and this is just another example of how lucky I am to be a business owner, that, with the consultation of my partners, of course, I can see where we're at and the road ahead and make a completely self-dulgent decision to do something that will spread my personal enjoyment of something across the world!
