So like we already know Toh makes fun of Harry potter in a ton of ways and subverts all of its tropes but I haven't seen anyone bring up the way Toh treats magic disability Vs the way HP treats magic disability.

Specifically thinking about the fact that squibs in HP can't use magic but their whole family can and instead of being allowed into school to learn potions, astronomy, beast keeping etc etc (literally any class except charms and defense against the dark arts really) they're ostrichisised from the whole wizarding community and presumably not given any education whatsoever, not even a Muggle one. And while yeah HP treats this as tragic it also doesn't pose this treatment as wrong or smth in need of change just 'oh the poor disables are born so sad and that sucks but oops what you gonna do'.

Vs the owl house where Luz is similarly magically disabled (she literally can't do magic according to boiling isles conventions). But instead of the show going whoops guess you were born unlucky shoulda had better genes, Luz learns a different way of doing magic and while the community is shocked by this they still accept this new form of magic and allow her into their society. Hunter also falls into this, he's born a powerless witch so instead he uses a staff and artificial magic until he gets a palisman. While toh acknowledges that the world is harder for people like Luz and Hunter it doesn't frame that as the end of the conversation and instead shows that just because you can't do things like other people can doesn't mean you can't find a new way that works for you that nobody has thought of before

thinking about the owl house in terms of disabled representation and like. god if they don't abuse Hunter's new access to "magic" we.. successfully have a show with REALLY good disabled representation ?

Eda's curse is a disability. she isn't preforming magic the same way everyone else does, like bard magic. feeling extreme emotions or not getting her medication can put her in danger, to herself and others. and she just lost an arm. she's afraid of forming connections because of her curse and how it effects others.

Hunter can't preform magic the ways others can. he had his staff, and then he had Flapjack. and now he has. Zoomies. i think that as long as he can't like, cast magic spells . he's still disabled! As far as I can remember- his powers aren't like how others are magic. we don't see other people zooming aruond in flashes of light, like that. he's not casting spells. His disability is still there, he just has a different form of aid!!! being able to go fricking super sonic i saw someone comparing Flapjack's death to "someone shooting my service dog, and i suddenly am cured of all disability because of how much i loved them" and !! thats not it !! its like breaking your wheelchair and getting a prosthetic !!! I UNDERSTAND that point. because like, yeah. that was his fucking therapy animal. i'd have preferred we kept Flapjack. but we didn't, and they're still handling it OKAY. Flapjack was akin to a mobility aid.

I feel like Hunter has a lot of untapped potential that i don't normally see touched upon in the fandom, of course it makes complete sense to me that the most popular fanworks would either have happy endings (Hunter is healed from their rot, they still have it but it no longer harms them, they get to have a second chance) or horrifically sad ones

However i don't really see Rain World as either a sad or happy story, they're just stories, and Hunter is one of them, a slugcat who suffers from the rot and cannot escape it but can't really bring themselves to accept it as a part of them

But then again, as someone who is mentally ill and would 100% say "fuck yeah" to the offering of making all of it go away, but realises they wouldn't be the same person they are today without it, and that it is a part of me even if i don't want it to be, i can very well say i might be projecting a little.
