Who wins a prize at a carnival/fair/festival: It depends on the game. Lol everything with shooting that two will end up making a competition outta it, figuring out who will win the most stuffed animals. That's how they got banned from playing any of the shooting related booths on several fairs already. The won stuffies will be gifted to the kids on Knowhere, althought they both chose always each for the other.

If it's other games, like for example fishing rubber ducks, Peter ends up winning always since Nebula has no patience for that game. But everything that requires aim? Nebula wins, always. Just by a few points, tho.

Who does most of the cooking: Peter. Not that I think he's that good of a cook himself but much more as I see it being Nebula. lol This two are so simple with food.(growing up taking what they get without much complain) Give them a few cans and snacks and they're good. Although Peter picked up the habit to cook at last once the week after being back on earth.

Who does most of the shopping: Nebula because Peter intends to get distracted, buying useless stuff and/or misplacing their shopping list. N: you went out to grab take out we ordered in advance. How, how did you ended up buying a fucking armchair?!

Who is hopeless at board games:Nebula. Her competition-genes get activated at every type of game, although it for sure cooled down since her childhood (where competition were a life or death situation) but she is a sore loser. lol

Who is always trying to make the other laugh: Personal headcanon that Peter gave himself the goal to make Nebula laugh more the moment she joined the guardians. Jokes, Puns, Stories, just showing her videos on his super cool new smartphone he downloaded because he knew she'd love them. Once they entered their relationship, Nebula slowly let her facade crumble that she's in love with Peter's humor. Things that before made her just look at him odd now makes her laugh. Turned out her faces before were her supressing laughing to not give him the satisfaction of his jokes working. (BIG HEADCANON that one of the things Peter fell in love with first were her soft giggles under her breath. They're were too adorable, to indulging, to not trying to hear more of it.)

Who has a tendency to give out TMI: We all know Peter Jason "Star Lord" "Can't keep his mouth shut for five minutes" Quill, right? That man will casually(and to his defense accidently) drop way too private things from their behind-doors-life. Nebula shuts him up with her "you better stop talking now or I'm a widow in a few seconds"-look.

Who does more DIY projects: Big Fan of Nebula going into handy work after becoming Leader of Knowhere. Growing up not being allowed to individualize her living space she slowly warms up to interior design once she and Peter moved in their own space. Building own furniture, spontanous deciding their walls need new color. Hey, maybe she grow a soft spot for "five Minute crafts", going all mad when it takes more than five minutes. Plus her tinkering on her arm with Rocket to advance it.

Who is the big spoon: They totally switch. Nebula on her part loves Peter's strong arms around her at night, giving her the safety she needed all her life. I dig Nebula enjoying being taken care of, allowing her to indulge the vulnerable sides of life once she let her guard down. Peter breathing in her neck at night, his heartbeat on her back all night, being that relaxing rhythm, his lips kissing the backside of her head in the morning. Bonus Peter being a damn furnace so she's always warm. She also feels his morning wood she totally not gets excited of Peter for his part is kinda the same? Loving being in his woman's embrace. her body having this duality on different sensations. Cold steel, warm flesh. Boobs Not that deep on his part, he's just a man who loves being cuddled.

Who gives more casual affection:Depending. Peter loves to give her the casual affection in public she allows as Nebula is not a fan of it. Sneaking kisses from her whe she isn't prepared for it. Holding her hand. Snuggling her cheeks when nobody is looking. This all continues behind closed doors just multiply it. But now, big twist. Once that doors are closed Nebula becomes a tamed wild cat just looking for pets. Being that touched-starved all her life and not being a fan of PDA she can't keep her hands off Peter. Sitting in his lap, casual cuddling... It took her so long to get comfortable to act on her desires for affection, Peter was so surprised once she shown it.

Who reads to whom: in love with the concept of Peter picking up reading back on earth and realizing he barly can't read english anymore. After getting back into it he started reading stories he remembered from his childhood to Nebula. Mostly fairytales. He also then realized that his mother always read him the non or at last less-violent versions of them. Nebula: Damn, didn't knew human fables were that gruesome. I kinda dig it. Peter: ...me neither. Fuck, when did Red Riding Hood got so violent? Nebula: Who cares? Keep reading!

Who brings drinks and food without being asked: Honestly, both. Peter plays little housewife when visiting Knowhere, bringing Nebula food to her office. But also Nebula will remind Peter to eat and drink as he intends to forget about it once he's busy with something that requires his entire attention. She had him too many times throwing up because he forgot to drink for hours and not realizing he was hungry.

Sissel - For spoilers reasons, I really can't say much but Gh.st trick is literally one of the best games ever I will die on this hill please please PLEASE play this game! They've remastered it to nearly all main modern consoles as well as Steam and I love it when REDACTED and then it turns out REDACTED was REDACTED and gosh!

But Sissel is hilarious and the 'straight man' of the comedy which is lots of fun. He's got a good sense of justice, is clever, caring, and is a ghost! I really like stories that explore/play with how an afterlife may work. I really find his Ghost Tricks neat and how they can do so much yet still have plenty of limitations. I really wish I could say more here but I can't without spoiling the whole game but he's a good banana-head guy, trust me ; )

The Reader - Hello more characters from obscure games I love! They are the playable character from Supergi.nt games' Pyre! And while they are kind of a blank slate for you, the player to get to choose how you wish to have them act and whatnot there are multiple times in the story where you can build your own backstory of your Reader how you wish.

Pyre is such an underrated game of Supergi.nt's and the world of it is so intriguing. I was drawn the backstory you can choose where the Reader is an orphan due to their country's generations-long feud with their neighbors and is a scholar who committed the 'sin' of owning books and being literate when the country's government had banned any form of literacy and even the old language (English) long ago. They are exiled for this great 'sin' to an inhospitable land underneath the dropoff of a massive waterfall. I just really like how much they are the glue to the little band of exiles you join together with to try and regain your alls freedom. They aren't a fighter, they physically can't be due to their disabilities, but their guidance more than makes up for it. I also really like how they go from just some nobody exile to trying to change their entire country.

The Voice / Archjustice Androblees IX - Also from Pyre (the faceclaim is not) look- every multi-use needs the one asshole muse ok? This is mine. He's an overdramatic sportscaster who's always narrating your life and roasting you every second of the way! I just find that neat and fun c:

I do think there are more complex things going on too but we don't get to see much of it in the game so we can only speculate for most of it but he went from being REDACTED to this so there must have been something that caused the change.

Jing Yuan - I'm a sucker for deeply hurting characters who hide it all behind a smile : ). Though he's also very cool and the focus on him in the Luofu chapter of HSR certainly helps, he had a lot of cool moments and scenes. But also has range and is a funny eepy lion man. I appreciate the duality. I am so normal about him and his friendship with the HCQ and how it all fell apart : ")

Lady - She's so cool TwT and cute and badass. And actually has a great character arc (at least in 3 which she was one of the main characters I'd say where the rest are more side appearances). She taught Dante to give a damn (honestly dmc3 wouldn't have happened the way it did without her) and hauls around a freaking rocket launcher to fight demons with despite being pure human fighting alongside superpowered demons! What more could you want in a gal? Oh, and has family trauma too so that's fun : ")

For Sissel this isn't weird given REDACTED but he finds it a lot of fun to push things off tables with his ghost tricks.

The Reader is such a book nerd I think they sometimes go to a library and take home more than they can carry resulting in them embarrassingly having to take some back in moments later.

The Archjustice is certainly over-dramatizing his voice when presiding over the rites and loves every second of it.

Jing Yuan sometimes cuts his hair short but it just grows back really fast so the shock doesn't last long to those who know him.

Lady sometimes shoots at Dante when he's being extra annoying--she misses on purpose but it's just to spook him.

17. do your muses get along with each other?

The Reader and Archjustice are at odds at each other during Pyre so definitely no there. No one gets along with Archjustice because he's a bastard. Sissel doesn't like being around Lady due to all the killing and death, but would be ok to hang out with the Reader but... he can't read though so they don't have much in common unless Reader could teach him. Jing Yuan would get along with everyone but Archjustice and would probably like talking with the Reader a lot and fighting alongside Lady (the feeling would be mutual). Lady would be freaked out by Sissel's existence, things are supposed to die not become ghosts! She'd think the Reader is an accident waiting to happen with how easily they allow people to approach them yet physically aren't able to defend themselves.

yessss my GIRL. some Rian fun (and not so fun) facts, under the cut bc I rambled lmao

her first girlfriend's name was Clara. they had a mutual breakup where they were like "just. uh. not feelin it, yknow?" "yeah no me neither" but they actually were feelin it, it's just Rian was never gonna tell Clara she was a mage just in case, and Clara was never gonna tell Rian that she was actually in Lothering trying to hear info abt her mage sister in Kinloch. they'd have stayed together, probably forever, if they'd told each other the fuckin truth lmao. (Clara is also a Red Jenny, and uses a hand crossbow. her and Rian meet up again sometime after DA2, when they're both active members of the mage resistance, and they're very much Spiderman Meme at one another)

Rian got her face tattoos right after Malcolm died. He was like the pillar of her universe, and she felt lost and out of control, so she did something drastic, visible and irreversible to her appearance to try and get her sense of self back on solid ground. Leandra lost her shit, but if Malcolm was still alive he would've thought the tattoos were dope as hell (he and Rian were very, very similar)

Rian, Merrill and Isabela technically have an open relationship, but ever since the three of them became serious, nobody has really ventured outside of the throuple. Rian kissed Tallis, Isabela has fucked Anders and Fenris a couple times, Merrill pegged Maraas (the Tal Vashoth in the Hanged Man) once, but most of the time it's just the three of them. sleeping with other people is difficult and time consuming and complicated, and they really do like each other so much that they don't feel the need to

Rian is actually incredibly intelligent, it's just that she doesn't believe she is, and because of her ADHD, her snark, her sense of humour and general lack of common sense, other people tend to perceive her as kind of an idiot. but she's very open minded and curious - sometimes to her own detriment - and can very quickly grasp the mechanics of magic without a lot of help or instruction (unless it's Creation. she can't for the life of her figure that one out, but she has figured out how to heal with blood magic, so). Solas is actually very impressed with her when she comes to Skyhold and starts asking him a bunch of questions about magic and the Veil and ancient elvhen magic ... then he sees her sat on Bull's shoulders, missing her shoes, drunkenly shouting about how Cullen cried that one time she threw her boogers at him. y'know. duality of Hawke. world's smartest dumbass.

Malcolm actually trained her in using a polearm, so if she was ever in a position where she couldn't use magic, she at least had the option of using her staff as a melee weapon. She took that training to heart a little bit too much, and more often than not you'll find her right next to Fenris in the front lines of a battle. He doesn't mind the backup, at least up until she accidentally smacks him with her staff or sets him on fire. (I also incorporate her massive in-game constitution score bc of blood magic into writing her - she is a very sturdy mage)

Vlad’s rapier (all the R-C have one) is called ‘Beheaded Voivode’. He can set the blade aflame through Alchemy.

Louisa was exiled from Altazor at the age of 20, then lived in Venterre and Zadith, were she finished her medical studies. She moved to Balkovia for what was supposed to be a 6 months programme and scientific coven, but then she met Vlad and she ended up staying. She was exiled for opposing the dictatorial regime existing in the country.

While Louisa knows alchemy —which she learnt to become a better doctor— she doesn’t consider herself a magic user. She, however, can lend her life force to Vlad if the need arises. This creates a unity of energy between them which Vlad can channel into more powerful alchemy. This is because they’re beneficiaries of The Lovers.

Thematically both of them are about breaking bad parenting cycles. Vlad’s parents were notoriously irresponsible, neglectful and despondent parents, with Matilda being even cruel and purposefully hurtful. Louisa’s were extremely unaccommodating, strict to the point of traumatising and extremely hypocritical. Neither of them wished to have children until they realised they could do it together.

Vlad and Louisa did not marry until the war in Balkovia ended. It began months before Anatole was born, and it ended when he was around the ages of three/four.

Vlad calls Anatole ‘Lilu’ and ‘Lily’, it comes from little.

Vlad’s monocle is functional. It’s made of alchemy altered glass and it’s the design of a group of fellow alchemists and Vlad himself. He has very little vision on his left eye due to almost blowing up a room trying to stabilise fireroot. He was successful, making him the first person to ever stabilise the compound through a stable, long-lasting method. In the future, Anatole uses his father’s alchemic breakthrough to provide public lighting to the streets of Vesuvia. This method is currently used in Balkovia for public buildings, since it requires very little money to run.

Both of them are quick tempered, but understanding with people they love. It’s if they don’t like you the problem.

Originally, Vlad thought Louisa was an alchemist because she was describing the process of lightening up a Molotov.

Louisa knows how to use firearms. She learnt in Altazor, when she began getting involved in the fight and protest against the dictatorship in it. She still has good aim, but is out of practice and prefers it that way. She prefers to focus in ways to help those affected.

Her best medicine is ER medicine and field medicine. She is trained to be a war doctor and was a volunteer when time permitted in the Balkovian war.

While Louisa’s relationship with her parents eased with time, it is not good. She prefers to keep them at a distance.

Originally, Aureliana and Joaquín opposed Louisa marrying Vlad. They even tried to make her go back to Altazor or at least Venterre when the war began, but Louisa told them she would rather take out her own femur and eat it. She, clearly, harboured a lot of resentment for them, as they were key to her exile.

Louisa’s favourite Radošević outside of her husband was Elysian. It was the first time she had a positive role model whose politics were the same as hers, and didn’t punish her for it.

Vlad’s biggest personality trait is ‘I Love My Wife, I Love My Son’.

Louisa was one of the few doctors to treat poor people in Vesuvia who caught the Plague.

Vlad can only draw objects (for invention designs) and buildings.

Both of them read a lot. It’s not weird to find them having reading dates.

Vlad has a series of Alchemic symbols tattooed around his wrist. He uses them as magic on-the-go.

When raising Anatole, they privileged communication, autonomy, self-expression and support more than anything else. Even through his argumentative teenager phase.

Speaking of their son, Anatole takes after Louisa in terms of politics, moral compass, and determination to see things done and to do what is right.

Vlad’s politics can be summarised in “If you’re told not to tamper with the shelf, and you do, and it falls on your head, then that was your own damn fault”.

Whenever Vlad began brooding because he was “sure” Louisa didn’t like him, his cats bit him.

Louisa housed and protected her sister Paris when she ran away from Altazor looking for her, upon discovering the real reason why her sister was sent away. Paris showed up out of the blue at her doorstep. Their other sister, Alma, helped her orchestrate the escape.

Louisa gets ready in 30 minutes, tops. Vlad in 2 hours.

While Valerius acts like he can’t stand her, he actually loves and respects Louisa a ridiculous amount.

Vlad is more emotional than Louisa but has more trouble showing it. He’s gotten better with time.

Vlad sails. Louisa always makes fun of him for being insanely competitive, but joke’s on her because she’s just as bad. As a true Aquarius sun and a Sag moon, she hates being told what to do. Whenever she gets like that, Vlad just looks at her with heart eyes.

Vlad is closest to Violeta Radošević, Milenko’s mother, out of his generation of cousins.

Except for formal occasions, Louisa doesn’t wear shirts or dresses that go past her ankles. Prefers them to the calf, as she needs to be able to move freely (she moves a lot).

It’s very likely Louisa is the one with undiagnosed ADHD out of the two of them, hence where Nana gets it from. She’s never checked.

Louisa loves dancing (so does Vlad but he hates admitting it), and she taught Anatole most of what she knew. As she grew up, she was constantly in dancing lessons, inspired by her own mother’s love of ballroom dancing. It’s one of the few things she’s fully grateful about.

This is more of a language fun fact than anything else, but Alzor and Nopali are extremely similar languages, and are almost virtually interchangeable.

They both stand by ‘one child is enough’ but end up adopting all of Anatole’s friends on accident, sometimes, even his partners a little, depending on the verse we are in.

Finally, out of the Arcana canon characters, Vlad would get along the best with Nadia, Salim and Aisha. Louisa would get along the best with Nadia, Julian and Portia.

yesss! don't mind me working through these so slowly, i'm using them as nice little writing breaks 💖

this is a cool choice for commentary, i havent read this since i posted it and i've forgotten a lot, so it almost feels like reading a brand new thing? i remember i wanted to write a soft christmas oneshot, especially because the christmas chapter of safs was that sad 1979 flashback with angsty teen jimmy mcgill and his sads.

“Hey,” he says. He grins, and it actually reaches his eyes. They crinkle.

i wanted this to stand alone if it needed to, but in the wider acb context i don't think jimmy's smiles have reached his eyes for a while! this comes right after the end of chapter 15, when he's just had some fragile validation from chuck and reconnected with kim.

She takes the bowl and the two spoons. Their handles are criss-crossed.

idk why but this always makes me think of those shots in the show of their two briefcases lying together!

with the kim pov stuff, i often try to keep the descriptions limited to simple physical descriptions of things. just their tangible properties like colours or positions, but still try to draw mood from that? i don't know if that makes any sense. it's a little challenge.

From somewhere in the darkness, he pulls out a long-sleeved shirt, one she hasn’t seen before. It’s purple and white and blue, densely patterned. He slips his arms into it with his back to her then turns toward the room, looking down at his fingers as they do up the buttons.

slippin jimmy voice: they have this one shirt that costs one thousand dollars because the pattern's SO wild! i want that one SO BAD!

“What is that?” she says, leaning her head closer. “Is it paisley?” He looks down again. “I think it’s purple?”

s6 give us more dumb dumb jimbo, please, i dare you. "finish... translating?"

“Hey,” he says, settling beside her, “the ladies back home loved this.” “Sure.” She scoops another spoonful of cereal into her mouth. “Sure they did.”

oh for kim to hear that little speech he gave the skate rat twins. all the finest babes. ok buddy sure. and everyone in the bar stood up and applauded.

“Maybe we had an extra round at Arno’s that night,” he adds, eventually. “Threw bottles against the wall. Like fireworks, right?”

a reminder of the story he tells her before the HHM party!

He chuckles and nudges her. “Oh, I meant yesterday.” Yesterday? (And she hears a phone ringing, hears the shrill bell of it on the wall, and she knows who’s on the other end of the line, knows without knowing how she knows it.)

oh shit i'd forgotten how much fun this little technique of intrusive kim thoughts is!

this is making me want to do another kim pov thing. i love thinking about this kind of narrative voice stuff. even that "Yesterday?" is kind of surprising, like suddenly her thoughts are allowed in the narration in a totally transparent way, and then the bracketed part is like... something poking at the back of her mind, even as she tries not to think of it. so much fun.

Lifts her hand from his leg, pressing it to his cheek. Transferring warmth from one place on him to the other.

obsessed with these two each thinking of the other as a source of warmth and light

(And she wants to know how he managed to get through so much life but still look like that, because even when the dark spots come over him it’s still a bright kind of darkness, she thinks, bright and loud like back-alley fireworks.)

aw man, this really condenses so much of their relationship for me.

i love thinking about like... scenes presented in jimmy pov where he's deep in the throes of an emo fit, but from kim's pov she still sees the bafflingly optimistic and scrappy dude who never quits. i really love the thought of this bright golden thing being there in him, that he never sees in himself but kim always sees.

Into his neck, she murmurs, “Yeah, who’d miss this?” and she can feel his laughter on her lips against his throat.

always happy when i can get these two memeing during sex

(And the heaviness of him on her surrounds her, closes her in, closes her in the way you close a circle, in the way you close a door, because being closed is just the touch of things connecting, right? And she can feel everything closing to one warm layer and spreading beneath her skin, closing inside her and him amongst it.)

ahhh i forgot i went on such a tear about this! there's like this duality of meaning that i'm trying to pick apart. you hear the word "closed" and you think inaccessible or cut-off, but it also means things connecting. two things have to touch for something to be closed. i don't know!

“Jimmy,” she murmurs, and he smiles like he always does when she says his name.

Apparently his girlfriend worked for MSBY and he fell in love with her. But they had some kind of a bullshit “no dating people affiliated with the team” rule or something so he counted down the days until her year-long contract was over.

And everyone was basically rooting for them since they were super obvious and they officially started dating at the small party on her last day. I think there’s like a super grainy video of them hugging for the entire party. And like, she fits into his embrace perfectly like damn what a match I wish my boyfriend hugged me like that.

I own a café and Atsumu comes regularly with his girlfriend. She always orders the chocolate waffle combo which is a plateful of waffles topped off with oreo crumbles and chocolate sauce and a milkshake. But Atsumu doesn’t like sweet things so he just watches her the entire time. You know the “chin rested on hand, leaning onto the table and looking at their significant other like the rest of the world doesn’t exist” move? Yeah, imagine that times 2,000. Then square it. And even then you won’t come close to how lovestruck he is for her.

And whenever she looks up from her waffles, he just grins and asks her if it’s nice in the sweetest voice like. You can make those types of voices??? I thought my ears were malfunctioning for a second.

They’re just really cute and make me happy whenever I see them. I’m pretty sure a lot of my regulars also support them as well.

So they’re getting married!! Ugh I swear I’m going to give them extra food as my way of saying congratulations the next time they come around.

Nah, man. He’s always going to back down for her. You know how a lot of couples break up during the preparation for the wedding because they realised they’re too stubborn and get into fights? I was fearing that happening for Atsumu but then the match incident happened and I realised. This guy is whipped for her. Properly whipped. He’s never going to break up with her.

What’s the match incident?

It was a match where he did a spike which bounded off the opponent blocker’s arm and somehow went straight to her face. I was nearby her and my heart literally leapt into my throat when I saw it. She reacted fast enough and blocked it with her hand, but you should really watch the video to hear the sound. It’s somehow still so strong even after hitting the blocker (powerful boi)

Anyway he immediately ran to her to check up on the damage and literally broke down when he saw her skin turning red. He later said she gets bruises easily and that this left one which persisted for like, 3 months.

She kept saying it was fine and that’s it’s not his fault, but he knelt in front of her to show how sorry he was. In front of everyone. Like, everyone. I couldn’t see one person who wasn’t watching him. And everyone’s jaw was on the floor because holy shit this guy’s kneeling here. I couldn’t believe it and I was standing right there.

The coach eventually came to take him back and sent her to the infirmary to get the hand checked out, but she said something to Atsumu first which revived him. He never told us what it was but apparently it’s something really good since he got like, 10 services aces after that.

I can imagine her painting and decorating the whole house while Atsumu trails behind her like a loyal puppy. “Hey, Hobi… Yoongi-oppa,” Aviva said, looking up from where she was sitting at the kitchen counter working on her laptop. Sunlight streamed in through the window, outlining her in a glow.

Yoongi squinted.

“What’re you doing here so early?”

“Soonyoungie came home early this morning with, um, a guest, so I thought I’d give them some privacy,” she explained.

“Ah.” Hoseok nodded. “One good thing about living in that teeny dorm with so many other boys for the past three years was that we didn’t really have room to bring anybody back with us.” He tilted his head. “I mean, in some ways, not great, but I usually prefer going to someone else’s house anyway.”

“I don’t care,” Yoongi said, yawning.

“Coffee’s up,” Aviva told him.

“…Please move in with us,” Yoongi said, gazing at her imploringly.

“Hmm. No,” she said flatly. Hoseok laughed as Yoongi sighed and went to pour himself a cup. “Have you guys been to sleep yet?”

“Couple of hours,” Yoongi muttered.

“He fell asleep on the couch,” Hoseok told her. Yoongi glared. “I came in there this morning to film a vlog and woke him accidentally.” He squeezed Yoongi in a hug. “Sorry!” Yoongi grumbled, patting his arm absentmindedly. “Can you believe it’s already March, Avi-yah?” She shook her head. “The cherry blossoms will be blooming soon—me and Yoongi were saying we should go, want to come with us?”

“There’s, um, a festival, right?” She thought. They nodded. She smiled. “Sounds fun.”

Yoongi’s birthday- March 9th 2013

The day of Yoongi’s birthday, the boys had an idea to surprise him with a cake. “Does he like surprises?” Aviva wondered, as she and Jin baked in her kitchen. Jin hummed.

“You know… I don’t know…”

Aviva frowned. “I don’t feel comfortable surprising somebody if I don’t know if they like surprises or not—what if it upsets him?”

“I’m pretty sure he could handle it,” Jin thought. “Yoongi-yah is a tough guy.”

“Yes, but he’s also adorably squishy,” Aviva thought.

Jin nodded. “The duality of man.”

Aviva squinted at him. “Has Kookie been sending you memes again?”

“…Maybe?” Jin licked some batter off of his finger.

“Hmm. Wash your hands before you touch anything.”

“I know, I know.” He went over to the sink.

Aviva leaned against her kitchen table, her brow furrowed. “I’m going to warn him.” She pulled out her phone.

“Eh, wait, Viva-yah!” He rushed over to her, squishing her face with his wet hands. “You’ll ruin the surprise!”

“Too bad,” she said, her voice muffled as she quickly texted him. “Hmmm.”

“What?”

She swatted him off of her. “He said he’s okay with surprises, but he appreciates the warning. He’ll pretend to be surprised so the kids won’t be disappointed—and he wants me to suggest interrupting him in the studio, because he thinks it’d make for a good log.”

Jin’s lips pursed. “I don’t know how you’ll convince them of that—the only one who isn’t terrified to interrupt Yoongi-yah in the Bangtan Room is Namjoon-ah.” He paused. “And you, of course.”

“You told him, didn’t you?” Namjoon said, as they washed the dishes at the dorm together later that night. Aviva smiled sheepishly. Namjoon pouted. “Why?”

“I didn’t want to freak him out if he was the kind of person who didn’t like surprises.”

“Huh. Cause you’re that kind of person?” Namjoon reasoned. She blinked at him. “Viva, I’ve seen you jump ten feet in the air when something is even a little bit surprising—honesty, I’m worried about Tae giving you a heart attack one of these days with his surprise hugs.” She frowned.

“I’m not an old lady.”

“No,” he agreed. “You’re definitely not. You’re… beautiful.”

She gave him an odd look.

“I wouldn’t be beautiful as an old lady?”

He groaned. “Just take the compliment!”

“No.”

“Fine!” He grunted. “But we’re getting off topic, the point is, I worry about you sometimes.”

Aviva reached over and patted his hand.

“Thanks for worrying, Joonie, but I’ll be okay. There will always be surprises in life, whether they’re good or bad ones. I’ll just have to do my best to deal with them.”

“I know you will,” he said, intertwining his fingers with hers so they were holding hands. “You’re strong. But that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone. I’m here if you ever need support.” She smiled.

“Right back at you.” She put the last dish in the drying rack. “Anyway, I like Tae’s hugs.” Namjoon groaned.

“Yeah, don’t tell him that, or he’ll never let go of you!”

March 20th 2013

Yoongi woke up, disoriented after an afternoon nap, and went into the kitchen to make some coffee.

He found Aviva standing at the sink, singing to herself quietly as she did the dishes.

“I’m coming home, I’m coming home, tell the world I’m coming home…”

“I like that song,” Yoongi said. She froze.

“Ah. Oppa.” She turned to him, her cheeks pink. “I, um, didn’t know you were awake.”

“So you snuck into the dorm to do our dishes while no one was watching?” He wondered.

“Ah, no, actually, I came check on you.”

He raised an eyebrow at her. “I told you it was just a headache. I feel better already.”

“I’m glad.”

“But what does that have to do with this…?” He motioned at the dishes.

“Ah, well, I saw you were sleeping, and I didn’t want to wake you, and I know you guys have been very busy with the album recently, so I thought I’d lend a hand.”

“You like Diddy?” He wondered.

“Um, I haven’t really listened to much of his stuff,” she admitted. “But I’ve been a fan of Skylar Grey since she was Holly Brook. Did you know she’s been singing professionally since she was a child?”

He looked at her, smiling slightly, and shaking his head.

“She does background vocals and has a writing credit on that, right? I looked it up.”

“Yeah. Her vocals are great, but her lyrics are what really get to me… they’re very… I don’t know, poetic?” She smiled. “It was especially nice to listen to as an angsty teenager. I’ll send you some of it, if you’d like?”

“Sure.” He looked at her, and then sighed. “Let me give you a hand. I’ll dry.”

“Hmmm. Okay.” She continued washing dishes and then handed them to him. He dried and put them in the drying cabinet, frowning at the wall. “Something on your mind?”

“I’m just… a bit homesick, I think. I used to be really excited to move out—I had dreams of owning a big house, and a fancy car… you know, all that. But recently I’ve kind of just been missing my childhood home, and my parents.” He looked at her. “That must’ve been a big change for you, moving to a whole different country… how do you deal with it?”

“Hmmm.” She gave him the last dish and then leaned against the counter, frowning at her feet as he dried it. “I don’t know. I guess… I cried a lot when I first moved here. But, I didn’t even have a lot of money for long distance calls, and Soonie and me didn’t have internet for ages, and… I was busy, I didn’t have too much time to think about it, I guess.”

“Your mind finds the time.”

“Yeah,” she acknowledged quietly.

“Do you want coffee?” He offered. “I was going to make some.” She nodded. He moved over and started prepping the coffee as she got two mugs out of the cabinet. “What about these days? Has it gotten any easier?”

She nodded again. “Because I’ve gotten better, and more invested in my job, and also…” She smiled. “Well, I have you guys. That’s helped a lot, I think.”

April 21st 2013

Aviva looked up, surprised to see Yoongi dragging Hoseok into her office on an early Sunday evening. She bit her lip.

“Is somebody injured again?”

“What?” Yoongi blinked. “No.” He frowned. “Why would you think that?”

“Who was I called to pick up from Lotte World because there was an egg growing out of his head after he smacked it on a bar?” She said, shooting him a look. Yoongi shrugged. She turned to Hoseok. “And I have an entire box of band-aids and pain patches in my first aid kit reserved just for you, dance boy.” Hoseok laughed nervously. “Besides, you two are usually glued to your work at this point. What’s up?”

“We’ve got a couple of hours of sunlight left, we’re taking off of work early and going to the cherry blossom festival.”

“We are?” Hoseok asked, eyes widening. Yoongi nodded.

“If you still want to.”

“Yes!” Hoseok grinned, pulling him into a hug. Yoongi laughed. Then they both looked at Aviva.

She chewed her lip again.

“What about work?”

“Chief Youngjin already approved it,” Yoongi told her.

She blinked. “How?”

“He likes me better than he likes you.”

“That… checks out, actually.” She laughed. “Okay, let’s go.”

Aviva and Yoongi both brought their cameras.

Hoseok teased them for looking like tourists.

“You’re the one posing for us every three seconds,” Yoongi grumbled.

“If you’re going to be rude, I won’t show you any of my pictures,” Aviva said.

“What? No! I want to see.” Hoseok reached over, but Aviva moved behind Yoongi, hiding her camera between them. “Yah! That’s not fair!” He whined. “I want to see what I look like in your pictures!” She peeked out from behind Yoongi, sticking her tongue out at Hoseok.

Yoongi turned around so that he and Aviva were facing each other, standing almost toe to toe.

“Can I see?”

“Sure.”

He reached down and clicked though them. Hoseok pouted.

“These are good,” Yoongi told her. She smiled at him. “Let’s keep walking while we’ve still got daylight.”

Hoseok noticed Aviva stiffening up as the crowd around them thickened. He leaned over, whispering in her ear.

“Okay if I hold your hand?”

She looked at him, wide-eyed, and then nodded.

He took her hand, humming softly as they walked. Yoongi glanced over at them, smiled, and then snapped a photo of them.

As they walked among the various food stalls, Aviva kept stopping and looking at everything.

“Ah, that looks good,” Aviva said, looking at one stall. “Ah, but that looks good too…” Her brow furrowed.

“Get both,” Yoongi said.

“Yeah, but that’s a lot of food. I’d feel bad about wasting it if I couldn’t finish…”

“Let’s share,” he suggested. “I’ll pay half.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I want to.”

“We can split three things three ways,” Hoseok said. “That way we can eat even more for even less money per person!” Aviva chewed at her lip, and then nodded slowly.

“Okay.”

“It looks like it might rain,” Yoongi said, shortly after they finished eating. Aviva caught a shot of him staring up at the sky, a pink petal standing out against his dark hair.

“Isn’t it just getting to be nighttime?” Hoseok thought.

Yoongi shook his head. “Still too early.”

A minute later rain pelted down. The crowds thinned, many of the food vendors quickly packing up to leave. Yoongi shoved his camera case under his hoodie, cursing.

“Here.” Aviva grabbed his hand and pulled him underneath an awning.

“Where did…?” Yoongi rolled his eyes, a smile spreading over his face as he watched Hoseok laugh, dancing around in the rain. He cupped his hands around his mouth. “Come here before you catch a cold, pabo!”

“I’ll get him,” Aviva said, handing Yoongi her camera. Before he could say a word, she ran out into the rain. Hoseok spun her around. They were both laughing, until she pulled him back towards Yoongi.

“It’s so weird,” Hoseok said, still laughing as they huddled under the awning. “It’s pouring but it’s still sunny too.”

“Sun shower,” Aviva murmured. “It’ll probably stop in a minute.”

okay so thing is i don’t write V he hits a bit close to home for me so rather than put myself through the ugly self analysis i just regulate that to my councilor sorry! that being said I am more than happy to write the rest of the characters for you. I hope I did your request justice and you enjoy reading it as much as i enjoyed writing it!

The RFA + Saeran with super sensitive MC

Jumin

- It took him some getting used to which isn’t to say he disliked it. It was reliving that he never had to guess how you were feeling. You wore your heart on your sleeves.

- He doesn’t raise his voice often. More often than not what gets you is the ices in his voice when he’s frustrated. The curtness of his words and the cold calculation in his eyes.

- He notices your shaking hands first and how watery your eyes are second. The first time it happens he shuts down completely frozen by the thought that he had hurt you, or scared you.

- Slowly he notices this happens often and he learns what to do to calm you down. He learns that your tears don’t all mean the same thing. Sometimes you cry when he gives you the perfect gift or when you are introduced to the kittens you foster.

- He falls in love with your happy tears and vows to hold you when the sad tears come.

- Look he has no self- control when it comes to buying you things and I absolutely think he has a silk handkerchief dedicated to drying your eye’s

- You have to admit its soft and cute (royal purple with a small Elizabeth the third on one corner)

- His comforting is gentle and calm. Slow and methodical. He hushes you his thumb rubbing soothing circles into you hand as you pulled yourself together. He was ever patient and loving. A strong and stable force you could rely on.

- Honestly your sensitivity helps him soften up considerably since he learns to be more connected and aware of things that may hurt your feeling (and by extension other peoples)

Yoosung

- He gets it. Sorta. He understands tearing up when people fight or fling mean words like mud. he gets that way too and he definitely sympathizes with you when you mention people teasing you for being so sensitive.

- The parts he doesn’t understand is why you cry when your happy. The first time he saw it was when you met lisa. She was so small and cute and she was yours, well yours and yoosung’s but that just made it more emotional!

- He rushes to you searching for anything he could do to help he’s talking a mile a minute asking you a string of nearly unintelligible questions to find out what was wrong. Once you explained that they were happy tears he looks a little lost but definitely relieved.

- He can get a bit carried away when he gets jealous and while he doesn’t technically yell his voice gets darker and rougher. He doesn’t do it one purpose of course and the second he hears your breath hitch.

- When you get down like that wipes away your tears with his thumb and apologizes he works hard to make his voice quieter and gentler as he whispers an endless string of reassurance and love. Anything to make up for making you cry.

- He has an entire YouTube playlist of your favorite “faith in humanity restored” videos to make you smile after bad days since being sensitive can make the world seem harsh sometimes.

Saeyoung

- When he’s frustrated he tends to snap at people and that can sometimes include you. In the beginning he was so focused on his work he didn’t notice your sniffles and soft breath catching on the knot in your throat

- The first time he saw you cry because of something he said was through CCTV when you left with tears in your eyes. he was sure you’d never come back. When you did come back he apologized quietly guilt clear on his face as he refused to make eye contact.

- Those days were rough on you as he tried constantly to push you away only to apologize stiffly when he saw you hurt. Once you’ve been together a while it gets better though.

- He’s perfected the art of spinning your emotions on their head the second he sees your eye’s tear up he starts working to make you laugh.

- A meme, or well-timed joke can have you laughing even as the tears stream down your face and he truly believes that kind of duality is simultaneously divine and so utterly human that he prays he gets to see it every day for the rest of his life.

- If it’s serious he’ll hold you in his lap and rest his chin on your head so you feel completely surrounded by him. In these moment he lets you cry yourself out simply holding you quietly.

Zen

- Zen doesn’t yell. Yelling is not a strong enough term for it. This man is used to projecting his voice through entire theaters so when he gets worked up enough to lose control of the volume of his voice it can be legitimately frightening

- Your covering your ears and squeezing your eyes shut just to stop yourself from outright sobbing even though his screaming isn’t directed towards you at all. When he hears your choked sob he spins on his heals

- He kisses away your tears like the hopeless romantic mess he is. Also your kisses fill him with a bubbly sort of warm happiness so he hopes you feel the same way.

- From then on he tries very hard to keep himself under control around you. He’s a passionate and fiery personality but he never wants to upset you like that. It still happens sometimes but they are fewer and farther between every time.

- When he sees you crying over a panda cub on a zoo date he can’t help but chuckle at you. Your so cute he’s not sure he can breathe and he certainly can’t see straight because all he wants is to kiss you silly.

- Is surprised and stiff at first she’s mentioned before that she’s not great with emotions but she desperately wants to help you so she tries. Problem is she’s trying really hard to be a good “friend” and the fact that your clinging to her tightly and crying sniffling into her shoulder is making that difficult.

- *pat pat* there there (don’t do anything gay don’t do anything gay) *kisses you* (damn it)

- She’s not sure why she did that really. But your so shocked you’ve stopped crying. She cant decide if that’s a good thing or not until you break out into a giggling smile. You wipe your eyes and say “if I knew crying would be the thing that got you to kiss me I wouldn’t have hid away so much”

- From that moment on you didn’t run and hide when you felt yourself getting a bit weepy because every time she noticed your tear glazed eye’s she’s smile fondly and use her apron or sleeve to wipe away your tears

- She asks you what’s wrong and listens patiently as you explain holding your hands in hers. When you’ve worked through all the emotions she gives you the smallest peck on the lips and makes sure to fix whatever she can.

- If she can’t fix it then she’ll offer what advice she can and remind you that it’s okay to take a break if you need one. After all you are the one that taught her the importance of breaks after all so she wants to return the favor if you ever feel overwhelmed.

Saeran

- Your sensitivity drew him to you to be honest. It gave you a kinship though after mint eye he was a little hesitant to admit he was cut from the same cloth so to speak. The way you managed to thrive and grow and be strong despite your sensitivity is what gave him the courage to leave mint eye in the first place

- Listen this boy loves you. So much so the instant he sees you crying he’s fighting tears too. On his bad days this can cause him to lash out. Better to seem angry than weak right. Wrong! now your crying more and he feels guilty. (he’s still got a lot of left over shit to sort through okay but he’s working on it)

- He swears at himself and pulls you against his chest where he holds you so tight you can barely breath one hand on the small of your back and the other on the back of your head so you can’t pull your face away and see how angry at himself he is. (it would be very counter intuitive right now)

- He’s not good at feelings okay, but he’s willing to step out of his comfort zone for you.

- Not to mention he understands the sensitivity to certain things after his childhood and time at mint eye he understands triggers all too well and even though it’s not exactly the same he’s not about to fault you for being sensitive.

there moments that may not be queerbaiting but is in a way homophobic. to test i ask if this was a man would it have been romantic. its not new have a character be 'interested' in a guy to mean the character is 'strait' but they don't change anything else. jus saying "she has a boyfriend" is like saying that just because two women its invalid because if Kara were a man it would have been the start of a love triangle. it was a love triangle when James was in a relationship with Lucy.

I’m glad we agree it probably isn’t queerbait. ;)

I obviously love SC and this fandom. I think it could be an epic love story if TPTB decided to go down that route; their track record on romantic pairings is abysmal, which is why I said could be. Then again the post-reveal fallout was so poorly written ... maybe not.

But again I go back to the tunnel vision fans can have, and this CatCo thing is one example. I enjoy the memes and gifs and shitposts about Lena buying CatCo “for” Kara too, but if we go back to the show itself: Morgan Edge exists, and Lena is nothing if not competitive in the extreme.

As always with Lena, the duality is there and she made a move that served her purposes, too. He was a multi-episode antagonist for her, and part of Lilian’s purpose in S3 - and Edge’s too - was to push Lena on her Luthor-ness, and how she defines what that means for her. For Good and Lena wanting Supergirl to prioritize saving the chemicals also makes sense from that perspective.

We can obviously all take what we like from the show as viewers; in my case, I can’t think of Lena buying CatCo without the bigger context that the writers explicitly put in there, which was her feud with Edge.

There’s also the practical aspect for SG: it has a small budget and a lot of characters. They needed a plot that dovetailed what they wanted to do with Lena as an individual character - including romantic tension with James - and the bigger season-long stories, including Sam who needed to temporarily occupy Lena’s seat at L-Corp. This was a way to accomplish that, as well.

I’m putting the subsequent asks you sent under the cut. Thank you for sharing. I see the romantic potential too which is why I love the ship. I just have a different perspective on the show and what it’s trying to do. :)

there moments in s3 which should not have been shown if they wanted to be only platonic. Lena's buy of CatCo because Kara asked help then selling it as soon as the rift happened. the framing of it being a "business deal" but not consulting James while always keeping Kara. Kara being shown not letting go of Lena when the city was in danger after the s2 finale where Clark says he would choose Lois over the world. They shouldn't have used Lena in that situation

why are these decsions made? they can do other things to show that Lena is important to Kara as a friend. what I see they don't want to put in the work of actually writing platonic and instead keep putting in these Moments like Kara risking identity for Lena then separate the two or throw them at guys after. which doesn't actually fix the framing and instead makes it read because its two women its invalid.

nature and nurture are curious things. your nature ensured that you crave love, but your nurturing ( — rather, your lack thereof ) ensured that you were cruel and callous. your father was a nasty man, harsh and severe, and you learned from him how to be the same. after all, your ploys for attention included acting like him the best you could. you copied his mannerisms, his way of speech. it never did catch you his fondness, but it did warp you into someone unkind and severe. despite being dark, your dreams are lighter than you are in the day. there is love and there is warmth, and things are gentle and soft. but when you wake, you scoff. you’re not sure if you are angry that a part of you is so weak, or if you are angry that you don’t have these nice things.

heavy lies the head that wears a crown. that won’t be the case with you. you will wear it with ease when you are finally king, you will not be stifled. you have one goal: to be king. what will you do to get it ? anything. you will give up your chances of being loved, you will rid yourself of the chains of being loyal to anyone else. if that causes you ache, this loss, so be it. some things are worth more than others.

wraiths:

— there is something so satisfying about being in charge of all the student wraiths. it’s a taste, more like a tease, of the power he could have once he is out of school. it feels so right, so fitting. but part of the draw to the wraiths had been orion. nicodemus had hoped ( had prayed ) that the man would be something more than his parents had been, something more than anyone in his life had been. it didn’t happen, though. orion offered him power, and the taste of it melted into his tongue sweetly, and that’s what is keeping him involved. tl;dr: are the wraiths right ? who is he to say. is he going to keep with them for the time being because he’s a power-hungry baby megalomaniac ? yes, one hundred perfect.

— his code name is viticomus, meaning adorned or crowned with vine-leaves.

— he has a rune because selling your soul at the ripe age of sixteen ( maybe seventeen, tba ?? ) was totally a good idea for him ! one of the best he’s ever had ! it’s for occlumency and it’s on the nape of his neck under his hair.

prophecy:

— the final betrayer. what does that mean ? nicodemus has wondered but he refuses to say anything certain to anyone. there are seemingly countless people he could betray. orion. his prewett relatives. himself. it leaves a strange taste in his mouth, wondering what it could mean. he doesn’t suppose he wouldn’t betray orion — for all the man had taught him, nicodemus still didn’t have the thing he wanted most — and should circumstances be right, it would be a hard choice. and the prewetts ? it could be argued that he’s already betrayed them, taking the label and beliefs of wraiths. but the last option worries him the most. it would be so easy. give up the things he wants, subject himself to a life that isn’t quite fulfilling.

plot arc:

— nicodemus knows that power is the key to adoration. now at the top of the wraiths, or at the very least, of the students ( maybe some of the adults, or at least in his mind, he is ), the lust for more is nearly palpable. he doesn’t just want it — he needs it. if he isn’t to get it, what has it all been for then ? he cannot wait for the respect, he cannot wait until his name strikes feeling into the heart of those who hear it. only then, will he be satisfied ( —or so he thinks ).

more rambles, less structure:

— can i just say: the duality of man ??? the lust for power, the need for love. these things typically don’t play together. for those who want power, they sacrifice love because the respect and fear they command replace it. sometimes being loving doesn’t command power. nico ( a note: no one calls him nico. it’s too informal, it’s too plebian, but for my sake while writing this intro, i will call him nico ) doesn’t quite understand this. he wants to be on top ( a need for a crown is overwhelming, and he’s only just begun tasting what kinghood is like, glints of power in his hands ) but he also wants to be loved. but does he know what love is ? probably not. he knows it’s in how you care for another person, a feeling that wells up in your chest, but i’m not sure he really knows how to love someone. he knows what it is to want and to lust, but love ? he’s never had it ! he wouldn’t know love if it smacked him in the face ! my poor emotionally-stunted, morally-skewed boy ! ( also i will acknowledge: the wraiths ? bad. nico ? Bad. not good people. not people you should aspire to be ! )

— and let’s talk about the weasleys ! what does he feel when he see them ? anger. jealousy. sadness. he could have been like them, if things were different. he could have known them. he could have been loved by them. and yet, none of those things are true. they’re practically all strangers, but he feels so much around them. for the most part, he hides it, behind snide words and an upturned nose. there is no getting close to them — first, he doesn’t know how to mend years of cruel behavior, but two, what if they turned him away ? for nico, feeling his own hurt and resentment as is is much better than risking getting hurt more.

— onion headlines that give me nicodemus vibes: “ i am the product of a single-nanny household ” “ wealthy teen nearly experiences consequence ” “ somebody should make a movie about my life ” “ i am lost in my own mansion ” “ report: income inequality most apparent during fifth-grade classmate’s birthday party ”

thoughts, few details:

— his parents hate each other and cheated on one another all the time as he grew up. are they a good example of a healthy relationship ? definitely not.

— he’s a scorpio. moody bitch.

— charms his hair brown now that he’s older to look less like a weasley, but can’t be bothered about the maintenance until someone points out he’s looking a little ruddy. the freckles, though ? he charmed them once and he ended up with like a thousand more and he won’t tempt fate again.

— would probably choke if someone liked him. probably ??? would think they’re lying.

— voldemort ? had good methods of control and fear-mongering. could nico be a better leader ? he believes so.

— his parents only had a kid out of obligation and not love. can we imagine the complex that gives a kid ?

— his parents supported voldemort back in the day. they still believed in pureblooded ideals, though, and nico grew up hearing them. this meant that the wraiths weren’t telling him anything he didn’t know when he was readying to join them.

— a note on this: orion tempted him with the allure of family. not pureblooded mania, not the scorn for anyone not entirely witch or wizard, but with family. they were both blacks, slight distance between them both, and blood together was a powerful thing. he had hoped this meant affection — he would have been over the moon at the smallest of fondness — but it seemed ( like voldemort himself — orion would be enthused at the comparison ) the older man was incapable of such.

— nico’s view of love DOES NOT equal real love. he’s dumb and wouldn’t know love if it hit him in the face.

— he thinks he should be loved. like, thinks people should be bowing at his feet, kissing his shoes. he thinks he’s more than deserving of it. how could he not be ?

My Top Songs of 2019

It’s that time of the year again when I take a look back at all the great music that was released throughout the year and choose my top 10. Quick disclaimer as usual: These are not what I think are the best songs of the year. They’re not even my favorite songs of the year. They’re simply the top 10 songs that have defined my year. (See the end if you’re interested in the rules of the selection of this top 10; also, most of this was written in 2019 but some was written in 2020).

10. “Think About Us” - Little Mix featuring Ty Dolla $ign

“When you're dancin' in the club And the nights are getting hard Do you think about us?”

Everyone knows that I have a weakness for girl groups. UK’s Little Mix isn’t exactly my favorite, but admire how strongly they’ve stuck together as a group. Their chemistry is undeniable, both as people and as vocalists. To me, “Think About Us” was the standout track from last year’s LM5, and the addition of Ty Dolla $ign was the little shove it needed to be great. The girls shine with their vocal prowess both on their solos and together on the chorus, and Ty$’s verse splits the track nicely. The accompanying video is mesmerizing. Each of the girls look absolutely stunning, and they have individual sets representing the different parts of a relationship, with Perrie as the butterflies-in-my-stomach beginning and Jade as the icy, cold end. The lyrics are quite vague, but I think that’s the intention. It’s applicable to any stage of a relationship; it could be a love song or a break-up song. With it’s fun beat, it’s hard to pick if you want to dance to it, belt it out, or try to do both, but it’s definitely been an infectious part of 2019!

The Netherlands’ Armin van Buuren has a recipe to get trance music to pull at your heart, and one piece that makes this apparent is “Lonely for You.” With the assist from US’s pop hit writer Bonnie McKee, this track is different yet familiar, a haunting disconnect to match the mixed feelings of the lyrics. From light synths to disco-esque drums to pure piano, Van Buuren’s track pushes and pulls the same way the tumultuous narrator’s lyrics go back and forth, with McKee’s vocals surfing on the top. The music video has a couple choreography emphasizing the push-and-pull theme, and McKee looks fantastic as usual. Van Buuren’s Balance is full of more emotionally-rich tracks for both happy and sad times, many of which utilize beautiful piano to highlight amazing vocals. “Lonely for You” is an altogether addictive track that was perfect for all the lonely nights of 2019.

8. “Antidote” - Mr Hudson

“You of all people After all we've been through Started out an angel And now you get away with murder”

As a huge fan of the UK’s Mr Hudson, I waited basically a decade for his sophomore album, and it did not disappoint. While When the Machine Stops features several tearjerking songs, “Antidote” is on the next level. The song takes the subject of betrayal and perfectly captures how trust can die. The genius is in its simplicity. Not a single instrument starts until the entire first verse is complete, letting the lyrics speak for themselves. Even when the instruments do come in, it’s just soft percussion and synths. As much as I love vocal runs and ad-libs galore, the straightforward melody had me humming this song for much of 2019.

7. “Me & You” - EXID

“Oh 야야야 더 이상 우리라는 말 하지 마마마 안 봐도 뻔하잖아 야임 마마마 지금 날 어디서 속이려 들어 그건 네 엄마마마 한테나 가서해 baby I don't care”

As I mentioned in last year’s post, 2018 was the year I fell in love with K-Pop, mostly due to Blackpink at the time. As much as I love Blackpink (and got to see them live this year!), their limited discography didn’t leave much to be loved. Enter EXID. This group is stacked: arguably South Korea’s best female rapper in the game LE, one of the best vocalists Solji, and the girl who is absolutely beautiful, sexy, cute, and smart all at the same time Hani (who may or may not be my ultimate bias, sorry Rosé). Their previous single “I Love You” missed my 2018 list because it was released so late in the year, but it turned out to be my most played song on Spotify this year. In fact, several of their songs were on that list. Like many of their previous singles, “Me & You” is an infectious dance track utilizing each member where they excel: Hani with her soft, sultry vocals, a splash of LE’s sick flows to split up the song, Hyelin’s powerhouse vocals to bring up the first chorus, Solji’s even more powerful vocals to take the song to its climax, and Jeonghwa on the dance break (low key kinda sounds like she’s singing “Baby Shark” but that’s a jam too I guess). The duality of the track is what makes it stand out, with the pretty vocals and simple verses largely contrasting from the deep and dirtier synths of the dance break. The video plays with this duality by featuring EXID as brides in white versus clubbing in neon. The rest of the WE mini album isn’t quite as dance-y but is fun to vibe to nonetheless. The group unfortunately may be over, since Hani and Jeonghwa are leaving their record label, but they’re at least sticking together for their activities in Japan for now. So many more K-Pop hits were released this year, some of my favorites being Mamamoo’s “Gogobebe,” SEVENTEEN’s “HIT,” Super Junior D&E’s “Danger,” Park Bom’s “Spring,” KARD’s “Dumb Litty,” NCT 127′s “Highway to Heaven”, NCT Dream’s “Boom”, Ong Seongwu’s “Heart Sign,” and another release to be mentioned later on this list.

6. “Heartbreak” - Hunter Hayes

“Another, ‘Almost perfect’ Didn't work, but totally worth it Better to have loved and lost my mind Than lose the nerve to even try”

I remember watching the 2013 Grammy’s and watching Hunter Hayes lose all three of his nominations, at that point becoming the “Leonardo DiCaprio never wins an Oscar” meme to me and my friends. He went on to lose two more nominations, but honestly, I always liked his music (and Grammy nominations are no small feat in the first place!). While 2017 was technically the year I had my first date and 2018 was the year I had my first girlfriend, 2019 was the year that I really put myself out there and dated the most. And yes, there was a lot of awkwardness and stupidity and mostly me messing up, but that’s just a part of life. And “Heartbreak” perfectly captures all those feelings. From the guitar to the bit of twang to the drums, this song is unabashedly fun country, and the optimistic lyrics always made me feel better. It’s like a c’est la vie Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road” before he found the girl. The accompanying video is also fun with a groundhog day theme as he tries to win over a girl. The album as a whole is a fun listen, with “Dear God” being the other Wild Blue (Part I) standout to me. Here’s hoping Part II comes out with some vibes in 2020!

5. “Tempo” - Lizzo featuring Missy Elliott

“He look like he could gain a little weight Lick the icing off, put the rest in your face”

Lizzo exploded this year, and I’m not mad about it. She has confidence and charisma galore, and her resulting music is mad bouncy, earning her several Grammy nominations for next year, including Best New Artist. Her songs like most of Cuz I Love You can be quite loud and in-your-face, which is fine, just not exactly my style. However, get her on this more subdued R&B beat and throw in a Missy Elliott feature, I’m in. This will make any upbeat R&B lover dance, and the music video is the kind of hot and fun you would expect (with a cowboy hat you may not expect). Missy also made an imprint this year with Iconology which is her first group release since 2005′s The Cookbook. I’ve always been a fan of her work, and this is a perfect feature for her.

4. “NONE of this has been about you” - Spencer Sutherland

“I'm afraid that you would hate me if you knew, That I've become insensitive, It's true, But even if you do”

Spencer Sutherland’s “NONE of this has been about you” off his debut EP of the same name has a lot of elements about it that I would personally want in a song of my own. It starts off with a very simple piano and vocals with a tinge of soul. As he continues to sing, he puts more soul and emotion into his voice, and splashes of harmonies start to come in. A couple short riffs later and just a second before the drop. Although, it’s not a dance drop. A choir drops in for the chorus with some drums to announce that, in fact, none of this has been about you. The song eventually escalates to Sutherland’s soaring ad-libs over the choir. Beyond the musical stylings, I enjoy the message of this song. Sure, the narrator is telling someone, possibly his lover, that his struggles are personal and not something she or he should worry about, but I also like to take it as a reminder not to always worry about others or what they are thinking. For example, 2019 was the first full year I had an ex, and a lot of that time, I was worried about posting on social media because maybe she’ll think this or that is about her. Honestly, I don’t recall ever “subtweeting” about her. We’re good. Any breakup song or black and white photo I post has nothing to do with her. So this song is a nice reminder to keep it pushing and stay in your own lanes. The remaining songs on Sutherland’s EP were all also on repeat throughout the year. The man’s just got a solid voice, and I’m glad he’s continuing a soulful pop sound that is rarer than before.

3. “Beautiful goodbye” - Chen

“다시 시간을 되돌려 처음 만난다면 가로등 옆에 서 있지 말아요 미소 짓지도 왼손으로 머릴 넘기지 마요 그래야 내가 그대를 지나칠 테니까”

Now, when it comes to a piano and vocals, nothing dominated my year more than Chen, especially his debut solo single “Beautiful goodbye.” I won’t repeat all the reasons why I love his voice so much (see last year’s post), but long story short, he’s my favorite male vocalist right now. Don’t get me wrong, I love EXO and the energy they bring to their songs, but a full EP of just Chen really lets the listener feel his artistry, pulling on heartstrings every which way. In this song, the narrator is recognizing that his relationship is dead but proposing that they can hold onto it just for a bit longer until they peacefully part in spring. There’s a respect to their relationship and what it has done for them that they can take with them as separate people before they part ways. Chen’s voice takes the listener on an adventure, starting soft and simple then escalating and crescendoing to unveil the hardened pain in his voice. It’s not a sudden angry breakup, it’s more subtle and more somber. In the end, his soft vibrato and the final notes of the piano leave the listener in just as an uncertain position as the narrator; is it better to hope it stays winter forever or hope for spring to come? While I also wanted some upbeat songs from Chen, his April, and a flower EP followed by Dear my dear is chockfull of beautiful and emotional ballads.

2. “Never-ending Summer” - Cyn

“What if we don't ever have to say goodbye? I wanna keep living like we'll never die If you're mad then I'm mad too You're crying, I'm sad too I'll watch your back for you, watch mine”

Newcomer Cyn’s “Never-ending Summer” is, to me, an experience. It took me a while to appreciate its simplicity, but then it became so addictive that it itself became never-ending. The guitar or synth (or whatever that instrument is) plays on loop to emphasize the never-ending nature of the song and gives a dreamy vibe that’s somehow both modern and reminiscent of the 70s. Cyn’s simple vocals evoke a carefree feeling reminiscent of running on the beach and all the accompanying imagery with her photoshoot and lyric video. It makes sense that Cyn is part of Katy Perry’s record label Unsub Records, as this song feels somewhat like Perry’s hits off of Teenage Dream including “California Gurls” and the title track, albeit much more in Cyn’s own understated style. This summer, I learned how to surf and have fallen deeper in love with the beach (even though a stingray stung me my last time there), and this song would keep the surfing mentality continuing throughout the year, even when it gets too cold for it to be summer (or, even if my foot is bleeding to death). Doesn’t hurt that Cyn is unbelievably cute too.

1. “Lovebird” - Far East Movement featuring Lay

“I can sleep here alone, but you know it's better with you You could be by yourself, but you know it's better with two”

As I grow as a person and become more proud of who I am, I think it makes sense for me to become more proud of my Asian heritage as well as support Asians and Asian-Americans out there, especially in the music industry as music means a great deal to me. That said, it’s important to me that I don’t support people just because they’re Asian as if it’s some kind of nepotism. That kind of segregating mentality can also be unhealthy. Far East Movement are technically a one hit wonder; they have yet to outdo their 2010 hit “Like a G6.” However, this year I found out about their record label Transparent Music that has been around since 2016 with a goal of unifying eastern and western music. Their previous album aptly named Identity features a ton of artists from both sides of the word, from Hyolyn and Loco to Macy Gray and Soulja Boy (shoutout to my favorite song on that album, “Freal Luv” featuring Tinashe and yet another EXO member, Chanyeol). To me, music is about unification. It is about bringing a deeper understanding through melody and rhythm. Those are the simplest terms I can put it. I hope this is evident through this list that I appreciate people and music from all kinds of backgrounds. Even if my tastes lean one way or another from year to year, I hope my lists maintain diversity and well-roundedness. Somehow, Far East Movement has managed to capture this sense of unification in “Lovebird,” featuring Chen’s EXO bandmate from China, Lay. It’s not the most complex song; in fact, like many songs on this list, it’s quite simple. The synth bends in a carefree way that celebrates togetherness along with the lyrics, and I find that beautiful. 2019 was a year of growth and life, and “Lovebird” was the perfect song to accompany it.
