LRB but I'm replaying BG3 and Gale being on the knife's edge of Wholesome/"Dirty" is what makes him soo interesting to me. Like this is a man who, in two different versions of the same scene, can either sweetly and gently make love to your tav in a typical setting which transitions to a tasteful fade-to-black, or brings your tav's spirit along for a transcendent experience where he literally duplicates part of himself so he can have more parts to touch their parts in some crazy astral-soup sky world. And both are treated like valid expressions of his love!! Like the range they allowed him to express, he's not one or the other, he's both

I can't shut up about Star Wars ever and because I am fun and love live My favorite animated series is Rebels. I wanted to show it to my roommate. Every time I re-watch it I notice more and more. I'm also watching Ashoka so It is nice to see the parallels. and GOD i love Hera Syndulla so much.

Currently Reading - Burning Chrome- William Gibson

Reading is SUUUUPER hard for me for some reason, so I find myself picking up and putting books down often. I rarely get so engrossed in a book that I finish it, but that's why Burning Chrome works for me. it's a scify anthology/short story comp that I can pick up and put away whenever I want. the few books I strongly recommend are Piranesi and the Winternight Trilogy!

it's been my favorite since I was a kid! I don't have a single explanation for it but it's always my favorite. I use it a lot in character design. I am also a fan of a good gold and black. the combo of red, dark navy and gold will always make me go insane. (in a good way)

Favourite Candy - Gummies

who has ONE favorite candy? what? I love gummies, hard candy, dark chocolate, anything with lemon- the more I think of it I don't think there's anything I actively dislike! except circus peanuts and candy corn but I think I'm allergic to them.

Favourite Game of All Time - Final Fantasy Crisis Core

I don't know who knows but I have a tattoo of the buster sword (Zacks OG CC version). it's on my left forearm. the tattoo artist I got was amazing, too. Crisis Core was extremely formative for me and had formulated some of the ideals I hold today.

Current Pets - Tadashi (gray longhair cat) and Acorn (Society Finch)

My boy tadashi was a shelter cat who probably would have died if I hadn't gotten him when I did. He came to me with a life threatening respiratory infection and ringworm, fleas, kennel rashes, etc. He's all fixed up now and living his best life as a spoiled, fat housecat. he's a bit standoffish to people, but really loves being with people. I also live with my sister's two cats, madeline and Olive.

after midnight - wayv this song is all about the baser/physical aspects of intimacy, it's night-based, and it talks a lot about secrets and desires. my favorite line is: that someone's scent and someone's secret, someone's scent breaks the gap between each other - which i'm sure sounds more eloquent in chinese. (translation here!)

the summoning - sleep token i know this is the "token astarion thirst trap song" but i think i particularly like the lines: raise me up again, take me past the edge, i want to see the other side. new life, pushing boundaries in a healthy way.

rain - sleep token favorite lines: and i don't wanna get in your way but i finally think i can say that the vicious cycle was over the moment you smiled at me - nuff said.

hell above - pierce the veil cannot spend another night in this home i close my eyes and take a breath real slow the consequence is if i leave, I'm alone but what's the difference when you beg for love? this song is very astarion to me, i feel like it's reminiscent of his escape/kidnapping at the very beginning of the game, as well as that first sexual encounter.

first light - hozier another token astarion song! festé, to me, is very sun-coded. and i think this would be astarion's way of saying that he didn't know things could be this good before that damned imp walked unceremoniously into his life.

haunted - type o negative this part: a living flame, impossible to resist; burning me deep with every bite, kiss and lick. astarion's thirst, and the effect festé's blood and body seems to have on him. also, the way he can't figure them out even though they're very up-front about the things they say and do.

sexual healing - marvin gaye, kygo this one is pretty obvious but!

mother may i - coheed & cambria i wanted to grab this one as a nod to one of astarion's voice lines. but this line: god only knows when your word isn't pure, and the blood on your hands isn't yours screams to astarion's guilt for manipulating them. oopsie

boy division - my chemical romance this line: i buy my enemies rope to hang me and the knives to gang me; you can watch them stab me on your television referring to astarion feeling like he was complicit in his own trauma, and the anger that goes along with that. also the coffin part (:'D)

vampires will never hurt you - my chemical romance can you take this spike? will it wash away this jet black feeling? i think, deep down, he feels guilty for having to feed on them, and in general, being the way that he is. of course, they accept him fully but he doesn't accept that, not at the start. also heehoo vampire song

please please please let me get what i want - deftones good times for a change that's it, post. no but this version of this song to me speaks desire, not just melancholy and longing like the smiths (i honestly hate the smiths). deftones brought a more "feral" quality to this cover that i really like.

vore - sleep token your flesh and bone welcome me in, welcome me in are you in pain like i am? will we remain stuck in the throat of gods? will the pain stop if we go deeper? this one is for both of them, honestly. that moment where you realize that, emotionally and physically, you're in too deep with someone to quit, to cut things off.

irresistible - fall out boy this is just for the bdsm elements HAH. no but this entire song, i don't know why it fits them both exactly, but it does. the way they both go through the absolute worst trauma (both apart and together) and can still mostly laugh, shrug, make love, and keep on living.

w.a.m.s. - fall out boy my head's in heaven, my soles are in hell let's meet in the purgatory of my hips and get well on astarion's side, it's a song about feeling like he's the sum of his past deeds. on festé's, it's a song about meeting in the middle and being physically present.

big iron - marty robbins this... lmfao. i was listening to spotify on shuffle and i was like this is so... unserious. festé would love this song. but this (and the wanderer) point to the many adventures they've had before they met astarion. and how they're generally a judicious and "good" person.

the wanderer - dion festé slept around a lot before this, and on the surface, they might seem like a ripple on the water. moving around a lot, having lots of sexual conquests, etc. for as short as their life has been relative to astarion's, they've certainly lived a lot. he's changed them though, they want to stay in one place now.

drowning - radio company this is more under the surface with festé. i feel like if they were here in modern times, they would love folk and americana music. they may look like a thembo, but underneath that, they're emotionally complex and actually quite guarded. specifically this line: hold the day oh we pray to make it through the night i think would have been a hard-hitter in the very end of the netherbrain conflict. they were trying really hard to hold it together for the sake of everyone else, and that's something they really struggle with emotionally; feeling like the world rests on their shoulders.

forever ain't long - radio company take me to heaven or wherever you're from back where it started before the hurt came along this is love, plain and simple, from festé to astarion. it also hints at something they're going to go through in a much later chapter in the fic.

undisclosed desires - muse i listened to this a lot when i was writing //taking. festé is the type of top/dom that intensely cares about whoever it is that they're sleeping with. they're a service top, plain and simple. luckily, they're pretty forthcoming with how they approach topping someone else, though. they want to find exactly what the other person needs, and provide it. i know you've suffered but i don't want you to hide it's cold and loveless i won't let you be denied

coming of age ceremony - hyolyn, xia this song was another one i listened to a lot during //taking. it's about coming into a different role. it's the switch song. hahah it's actually a cover! i think the duet makes it really... sensual. give me twenty stems of roses so i can feel your love is a BAR. 20 roses is symbolic of sincerity and a deep belief in something, so i thought it fit well with the theme of commitment and exploration. (translation here!)

i'll keep you safe - sagun it's really simple, it's a lofi song. does what it says on the can. i imagine it being the background song to the two of them drifting off to sleep in each others' arms, as cheesy as that sounds. they haven't spent a night apart since act 2, give them a break.

tell it to my heart - meduza, hozier this is the song that plays in astarion's head whenever he gets really down on himself. i don't know that he'll ever truly believe he deserves someone like festé, and this is the little voice in his head confirming that. it alludes to him tending to misread situations that are actually innocent, which i think is something a lot of people who have trauma can relate to - jumping to the worst conclusions. what he doesn't know that deep down, they feel the same way.

it's not a side effect of the cocaine, i am thinking it must be love - fall out boy put your hand between an aching head and an aching world we'll make them so jealous we'll make them hate us those moments where astarion is trapped in his memories and he feels his imp touching him and grounding him back in the moment? yeah, i think of this line. they both want to show the other off, they're both so proud of each other and so DISGUSTINGLY in love.

GG Request List Part 1

I've been working on this for a while, just slowly gathering these until I had 10 (which is Tumblr's video limit). Here are some of the songs I'd like to see/hear GG perform.

I'm posting it as 'Part 1' because I have every intention of continuing to collect songs I would like to hear him sing and sharing them with you when the list is filled.

Disclaimer: Many of these are in English. Sorry if that offends anyone, but this is my list of what I want to hear him sing, so of course it's going to reflect my tastes, and hearing him sing lyrics I can understand always feels really special for me.

I'm also still fairly new to Chinese music so I'm at a bit of a disadvantage, and I feel wary of choosing songs that offend, or that might not be suitable for social, political or cultural reasons (Nousu son by JIHU, for example, which I absolutely love and think GG's voice would be beautiful for, but might not be culturally appropriate for GG to sing).

So if anything I suggest is inappropriate, my apologies.

In no particular order:

Sam Smith - Lay Me Down

I know we've already seen GG singing this, but I want a live stage performance of this soooooo badly. I think GG's voice would also be perfect for Diamonds, but Lay Me Down is so 💋👌🏻 for GG.

Hozier - From Eden

I absolutely can't get enough of this song (or of Hozier, for that matter). I've often pictured GG singing this song. It's so perfect for his voice, and it has such a nice rhythm and upbeat energy to it. Exuberant and yet with a bit of a dark twist. I'd love to hear him sing something this resonant and large.

Lesie Cheung - The Moon Represents My Heart

This song has so much meaning that is relevant to me as a turtle and as a queer person. Not just the song, but Leslie's singing of it. I feel like it would be a powerful statement for GG to sing this song. I would cry if it ever happened. More on that in this beautiful post from Pie.

Little Mix - Secret Love Song Part 2

This video is heartbreaking. I think every turtle has probably seen this and cried. Why not take it to the next level and hear this song in GG's beautiful voice? I'm not sure how I would ever recover.

Ele Yan - The Last Fireworks of the Summer Night

This song is so emotional and beautiful. GG's voice would be so beautiful here, and the song is so appropriate for him lyrically. It has that perfect balance of sweet and sad. Yearning.

Alyssa Baker - Can't Help Falling in Love With You

This interpretation of the song is so perfect for GG's voice. I melt whenever I think of him singing this. This arrangement is brought into more of a contemporary space, and I think that would fit him and his overall style quite well.

Years & Years - Shine

I really struggled with this choice, because I feel Olly Alexander's singing style would be so interesting with GG's voice, but Olly sings SO MANY breakup songs. As much as I know GG and DD love sad/sour love songs, I could never request a breakup song from GG. I'm not even sure he'd sing it, with his superstitious nature. 😅

Lyrically Starstruck would just be hilarious to hear GG sing, but it's not right for his voice or singing style. However I think Shine would work well for GG, and it is so energetic and upbeat, which is always fun to see from him. If it wasn't a breakup song, I think If You're Over Me would be perfect for GG.

Jay Chou - Return to the Past

This song has such a beautiful bittersweet, anthemic sound to it. GG would suit it so well. There's something of the XNINE vibe to this song, as well, which is probably part of why I think of GG every time I hear it. Would love to hear him sing it.

Leaona Lewis - Run (Snow Patrol Cover)

This take on this song is so amazing. I can totally hear GG's voice when I listen to this. Some of the notes might be out of his range, but OMG, my heart would burst if I could hear him sing this version of the song. A lot of people prefer the original, but to me this version is everything. Her voice, the vocal arrangement... ahh so beautiful.

Zheng Yu - Why Sigh

Zheng Yu's voice is so similar to GG's in tone that listening to it I can easily imagine how beautiful GG's voice would sound. Of course it's reminiscent of MDSZ/CQL as well, but that's not even one of the reasons why I'd like to hear him sing it. If anything it's just that while I like this song, I always feel a bit unsatisfied because it makes me want to hear it in GG's voice.

Represented by: Rock Me, Amadeus - Falco

I was a little apprehensive about using this song for Vil. While it does fit his character and vibes, it is a little bit... suggestive. Putting that aside, Vil is (at least most of) this song. He's a superstar, popular, dramatic ("has flair!"), and everyone finds him to be beautiful and perfect, despite his flaws. And he does have flaws, which he doesn't want to address. I also headcanon that he has Austrian / German ancestry (or whatever the Twisted Wonderland equivalent is).

Listens to: Jackie and Wilson - Hozier

Again, I don't know why, but I believe Vil would listen to Hozier.  Vil would probably like the atmosphere created in Hozier's music.  And he'd appreciate Hozier's vocal tone and colour. I can't explain it further, but I think he'd really, really like it!

Epel Felmier

Represented by: Autotheist - Baby Bugs

Epel has some struggles with who he is. He's trying to figure out who he is within his personality, appearance, and identity. He feels a lot of pressures from others trying to shape who he is, how he looks, how he acts, and what he thinks. He's trying to find a place for himself, and he is angry about not having found it yet.

Listens to: That Turbulent Uneasy Feeling - D.O.A.

Epel would like fast-paced, aggressive music, that he can just feel. I think he would especially enjoy songs that criticize the mainstream social norms that he feels stifled by - hardcore punk would be his go-to genre. I can imagine him listening to this in his room after fighting with Vil... again. This song also represents his character well, actually!

Rook Hunt

Represented by: Prince Charming - Adam & the Ants

Rook is flamboyant. He is theatrical. And he, above almost all else, supports others in becoming their most beautiful selves. As such, the message of the song reflects Rook's motivations and thoughts. Additionally, the theatricality and subtle notes of violence of the group mirrors Rook's character beautifully. (Rook would also without a doubt listen to this, and other songs by Adam and the Ants. He is simply too dramatic not to!)

Listens to: Goodbye & Hello - Tim Buckley

Rook would simply adore the poetry of this song, and in fact, most of Tim Buckley's music. He would spend time listening, absorbing, and analyzing the lyrics, music, and history of the song. It also has an almost... historical, European-esque(?) feel to the instrumentation and musical lines that would highly appeal to him.

Bonus - Also listens to: All I Ask of You (Phantom of the Opera)

One of Rook's hobbies is going to theatre productions, and he would have just loved the grandeur and the tragedy and the heart of The Phantom of the Opera. I'm certain that he would consider "All I ask of You" to be an absolutely beautiful declaration of love and commitment, and would likely be one of his favourite musical theatre pieces.

I feel like this song just fits Vincent extremely well– especially when it's describing the more somber parts of his story. It's just… very him. I see a lot of people joking about how his song should be by like, Breaking Benjamin or MCR, which is fine, he is an angsty mf, it's just that that's not all he is. Hell, this song could be described as angsty too, though it's not JUST angst.

Also, yeah, this could probably work for other Vincent pairings too such as Valenwind, just not as well as Vinveld or Vinlu.

a song that reminds me of them: Arsonist's lullaby by Hozier

what they smell like: He has a lot more of that intense New Car smell from the omniums, but there's also a nice smoky incense smell to him as well. Little bit of patchouli in there.

an otp: him and ME. But also I did actually write an OC/self-insert (who isn't really a self insert but also they kind of are??) and here's a fic about them.

a notp: None in particular--but I think any dubcon headcanons are a big "fuck you how dare you he would NEVER" for me.

favorite platonic/familial relationships: I'm of the opinion that Omnic relationships aren't as easily sorted into Romantic/Platonic/Familiar as they are for us humans. Like I think his relationship with Zenyatta is very multilayered and it doesn't really fit all of our neat human boxes. And that's why I like it!!!

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with: I don't like that people interpreted his wire 'hair' as locs like they're clearly very flat and shiny, they don't have remotely the same bounciness and volume as locs, his name is clearly influenced by Hinduism, and he has a Southeast asian voice actor. He's not black-coded, he's Southeast Asian/South Asian coded. It's weird that people keep saying they're like locs or drawing them as locs in humanizations.

the position they sleep in: Doesn't sleep. Meditates in low-power mode. But he will also moodily slump against walls with one arm propped up on his knee like a 19th century romantic, brooding deeply.

a crossover au i’d love to see them in: Honestly I should just write more fics with him and Sajaf. It's such a fun exploration of his character.

oooooo this is an interesting one! all my titles for the last few years have been song lyrics. I think I like "when my time comes around" just because it fits JC so well. The song as a whole yes, but that like specifically, the "time" of it all, the peaceful acceptance of "yes my time is going to come, but that's alright, because I have you." soulmatism etc

16. What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?

I think it's "Canon Compliant"! I tend to write nearly entirely canon compliant/missing moment type fics, especially in the last year or so. Also a lot of "inspired by music" tags, because of my song drabbles and the Hozier fic.

29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

oh this is difficult 😬 despite the fact that I haven't posted all that much this year, full fics at least, I'm really proud of the stuff I wrote, and there's a few lines that I hold really close to my heart. this one from when my time comes around means a lot to me, and I think was a really important moment for Jamie.

It was here, in this holy place, that she showed her mettle. It was here, with tears in her eyes and hands steady and shaking, with her voice breaking and desperate and dark shadows under her eyes, that she pulled him back from that abyss with teeth bared. She had looked him in the eye and pulled down both their walls, and brought him home. He had tried to beg for her forgiveness, had tried to explain to her why she must leave, how he was not and could not be the man that she married. Claire had just looked him in the eyes, had held him and made him look back, and told him with every bit of cold determination in her voice that she would not. She would not forgive him, because there was not a single thing to forgive.

I also really really liked this one from later in the same fic. I feel like it's really important to Jamie that he faces things head on, that he's seen as having courage and strength. But at his core he does have some very very profound fears, and those come into play when he's at death's door. BUT there was something so different in that moment in Bees, and the stage that he's in in his life. He's afraid but found a different type of peace.

He had looked death in the face so many times in his life. He had told himself all those other times that he wasn’t afraid. This is the first time he is telling the truth.

also i'm gonna be selfish and post a third one. this is technically not posted yet, but I did write it in 2023, so it counts. pre-canon buck my beloved lil sad dude.

Buck doesn’t have much. A worn-down Jeep that has seen more miles than it was ever meant to, a worn-out bag of clothes in the back seat, a dry pack of pens to sign one-way postcards, and a heart that he never quite seems to put in the right place. He’s always had something in him pushing him to go, find a place a people a home. Buck climbs out of his beat-up Jeep, and hopes that this time, this time, he’s found it. He pulls his brand-new LAFD issued cap firmer on his head, and steps into the 118.

time for my Henry Oak character playlist breakdown everyone

It’s so long and I’m not sorry. fair warning it gets very sad at certain points and I did make myself cry while writing it. enjoy <3

Woodland: it's a song about being in nature and all that. “We are all creatures of the sunlight” is a very Henry concept. It also has a very whimsical vibe that suits my boy well I think.

Curses: well I mean. The oak’s are cursed by the doodler, the song slaps, the crane wives have a very henry vibe to me, it just felt right to put this one on henry’s playlist. “There’s a fire in my brain and I'm burning up” could very easily be about Henry's anger, constantly coming to the surface no matter what he does to calm himself. “When this house don't feel like home” can be about Oakvale and how Henry never felt truly at home or at peace there. “Won't you stay with me my darling/when the war starts in my heart” could be about lark, and the rogue card. Henry wants Lark to stay with him, to love him, but Lark can't do that. That starts a war in Henry's heart, does he ignore his son's request for space, or does he accept when Lark sets down a boundary with him, using the very technique Henry taught him against him?? (he listens and gives lark the space he needs, no matter how much it hurts to see his son hate him.) “the devils after both of us” is sung from henry's perspective, and is about the doodler curse affecting both him and his sons.

Someone new: henry’s polyam and has a lot of love to go around. That's it. also hozier slaps.

Flowers in your hair: “when we were younger/we thought everyone was on our side” can be about a young, naive henry not realizing how hateful and harsh the human realm can be. The title is just sweet. I think Mercedes often puts flowers in her hair for fun/to feel cute and I think Henry really likes it. Idk this ones just nice and i think i found it on another henry playlist.

Hello my old heart: I hadn't thought too deeply about why I put this one on here but reading through the lyrics again I think it's Henry talking to his younger self when he returns to oakvale. “Every day i add another stone/to the walls i built around you/to keep you safe” can be both henry talking to his younger self, Hen, and being like ‘hey we make it out of here it's okay’ but it can also be henry protecting his sons and doing everything he can to make sure they never feel controlled and stifled the way he was as a kid.

This is me trying: the title alone. Henry tries so hard. And yet. And yet. “My words shoot to kill when I'm mad/i have a lot of regrets about that” is the most henry lyric ever written. Henry just tries so hard and yet his kid still hates him, Sparrow grew up to be far too similar to Barry and if Henry knew that information it would break him.

Father: This one is only on here because I saw it on a ton of other dndads playlists and I was like “oh okay I can kinda see it working for Henry '' so I put it on. I don't have a lot of personal connection to this song or a lot hc’s for why it fits for henry. That being said, the lyrics ``and I believe that yeah dad maybe no one is perfect/but I believe that you were pushing your luck” can be applied very well to Henry talking about barry.

Heirloom: of all the dads who need to hear they’re more than their fathers son, I think Henry needs to hear it the most.

Grow as we go: this is one of the best love songs ever written and i think it's very oakson from henry's pov. He's willing to stick with and help darryl as he changes and shifts and figures himself out. It's all very sweet and just akdhfjhlkjsdf adorable. I love them.

seven: baby henry was far more wild and crazy, similar to Lark and Sparrow. this whole song is a nostalgia fest for the kid life he had in Oakvale that he’ll never get back.

I have made mistakes: this is going to be a long one, prepare yourself. The phrase “i have made mistakes” is so sad when applied to henry because he blames himself so heavily for things that were out of his control, or reacting ‘poorly’ when he was trying the best he could. “The promises i've made, i continue to break them” is specifically about the gauntlets of ogre power, when henry promised to give them to the boys and then he took them away again. “All the doubts I've faced/I continue to face them” is Henry's general anxiety surrounding his parenting. “But nothing is a waste if you learn from it” is Mercedes's wisdom keeping him calm, i think she's a very calming and reassuring voice in his head and presence in his life that keeps him grounded when he starts to spiral. “We have lived in fear and our fear has betrayed us/but we will overcome the apathy that has made us” is about growing up under Barry and his whole obsession with being perfect and how that fucked henri up. I also think it works as henry talking to ron, and them bonding over being stronger than their dads think they are and especially with the next line “we are not alone in the dark with our demons” i just think its this really powerful message of connection and care between these two very traumatized dads who are just trying their best and trying to not let the actions of their fathers completely ruin their lives. “How can i face you now/when we both know how badly i have let you down?” is henry talking about lark.

Dirty paws: my friend showed me this song and I really loved it. I imagine this song is a story Henry would tell to Lark and Sparrow as a bedtime story or a lullaby even.

Slow and steady: this song is about Henry's inner anxiety. “I move slow and steady/but I feel like a waterfall” Henry tries to be calm and collected and he meditates and tries to keep control, but sometimes his emotions get too much, his anger and insecurities take over no matter what he does. “Two wolves running in the wind” is Lark and Sparrow.

Growing up: the whole concept of living your life and going through it with love and freedom in your heart is a very Henry concept. “There lies my loyalty/with my friends to the end” is Henry talking about the dads, his loyalty lies in them to the very end. “I used to close my eyes/to what stirred under my bed/now theyre open wide/to the monsters in my head” is all about how Henry views his parenting and lark and sparrow. He used to look away and deny how chaotic they truly were, down playing it all with ‘oh they're just free spirts’ etc. etc. but over the course of the adventure and with the help of the other dads he learns he does actually have to start reining them in and that scares him. “Instead of claws they whisper lies/sinking fear in quiet steps/so i will fight in the light/till my final breath” is henry’s fear of being like his father if he expresses his anger towards his sons, his anxiety and inner voice feed him lies and play on all his trauma surrounding his father. But the second part of those lyrics is the other dads supporting and helping Henry, assuring him he's not his dad, it's good to place boundaries and say no, it doesn't make you a bad parent or just like your father. With the help of the other dads he can begin to fight the inner voice in his head.

Ready now: I don't really know why I have this one on here, it's just calm and soothing and very Henry-like to me.

Cats and dogs: “my roots have grown but i don't know where they are” is henry's confusion over his past and where he belongs. Also it's partly on here because of the title, there are several songs on here with animal/nature themed titles that gave very henry vibes to me.

Allies or enemies: ah. The big one. “Are we allies or enemies/this will be the death of me” is henry talking about Lark and the rogue card. Are he and Lark enemies now? Will his son really hate him forever? The never ending questioning and pain and sorrow of the situation will forever haunt henry until the day he dies. “Remember when i could tell you not to smile when you were mad/and you would always crack/and we’d both be laughing in the end/now you're not so quick to forget” henry is thinking back to before, when Lark was little and they would fight and squabble but it was never to serious, henry would crack a joke and Lark would laugh at his dad and things were good, if chaotic. Now Lark doesn't forget, his anger isn't so easily dissuaded. Lark’s anger at his father burns hot and intense behind his eyes, never relenting, there is nothing henry can do to help his son. It breaks his heart. “All is fair in love and war but I can't fight with you anymore” is Henry giving up. He can't bring himself to fight his son. “What happens now? Do we have another go?/do we bow out and take our separate roads?/i’ll admit i've had my doubts/but i want to let in not out” is henry asking himself what to do after they return home. Does he keep trying with Lark now that they're out of the realms? He knows his son wants nothing to do with him, but he can't help but want in, he wants to be there, to take care of his beautiful boy. And then the chorus repeats, over and over again, with no answer. Just like Lark and Henry.

Mess is mine: this is another one on here for the title alone, the mess that is the rogue card and Lark hating Henry is something Henry will forever blame himself for, that mess will always be his.

Kiss me: just a really sweet, nice love song for henry and mercedes.

Small hands: I've cried to this song so many times, okay. The amount of LOVE and CARE in this song. drives me insane. The whole opening bit makes me think of Henry, but especially “i can't fix what was done to you/but i’ll shield you from the rain” because like. Henry can't fix what was done to his friends, the dads, and he can't fix or solve all of their own problems and traumas, but at the very least he can be there for them. He can be a safe, comforting presence in their lives. “And if the fire in your chest comes out/well i’ll hold you all the same” is henry talking to Lark, it doesn't matter to him if Lark is angry, he’ll still show up for his kid no matter what. He’ll hold his son all the same. And then at the very end “and if you need to take this out on me/then you know i won't complain” is SO henry and lark core. Henry will let lark take all of his anger out on him, and after a certain point he won't say anything back. He's already tried, and lark will continue holding onto this hatred and rage until there's nothing left.

The anthem of mr dark: “i never have the time to do the nothing that i want to do/im always rushing around being what other people need me to be” is all about henry being a people pleaser, stemming from his childhood where Barry was a piece of shit who never let his son do his own thing and projected this image of perfection everywhere he went. “I'm starting to see that isn't me/and my freedom isn't free” is directly about Barry and henry's childhood in Oakvale, henry blames himself for not being perfect, but that was never his fault, and it takes him a long time into adulthood to figure that out. “I’ll learn to let go/and learn to say no” is something henry needs to do and actively works on. He needs to give himself forgiveness and space to breath.

Talk to me: this is just on here bc henry’s always the one wanting to talk about feelings and is playing the constant emotional support. He wants to be approachable and make people feel safe, he wants to be let in and he wants to feel trusted (i am so projecting here but idc). This song, like ready now, also has a very soothing sound that really works for henry imo.

Happy accidents: oakson song. “You love me but you dont know it yet” is henry knowing that Darryl’s queer and loves him but isnt fully ready to admit that, so he keeps quiet about it, lets Darryl take it at his own pace. And then the rest is just a cute love song thing for them. They deserve nice things, and if canon won't give them that, I will.

Dear wormwood: ah. This one is about his dad, so it's sad. You've been warned. “When i was a child/i didn't hear a single word you said/the things i was afraid of/they were all confined beneath my bed” i think when henry was a child, when he was Hen, he kept things from Barry, he hid who he truly was, he tried to copy this ‘perfect’ persona when Barry was around. Any part of himself that didn't fit that image was swept under the bed, so to speak. “But the years have been long/and you have taught me well to hide away” when Henry comes back to Oakvale, the urge to present as perfect as possible comes back, being himself around his father is hard, but he can't pretend any longer. Now, we’re jumping out of order of the timeline a little bit, but “there before the threshold/i saw a brighter world beyond myself” is very literal in this case, with henry fixing the mirror and seeing another realm. A brighter place for him to be, away from his father. “And in my hour of weakness/you were there to see my courage fail” is Barry blaming Henry for being angry, for expressing his emotions, calling that his hour of weakness, telling him he was failing for showing that. Henry doesn’t know what he’ll do when he’s around his father again, until the anger and hurt takes over and he snaps. “Planning without acting/steadily becoming what i hate” i don't have a real analysis for how these lyrics fit henry but they make me Feel Things in my soul and sometimes that's enough. “I have always known you/you have always been there in my mind” even after falling through the portal, even after the amnesia, Henry can't get Barry out of his head. He's always there, the voice behind all his insecurities, telling him he's not good enough, etc. etc. “but now I understand you/and I will not be a part of your designs” Henry sees his fathers past in the dungeon in oakvale. He sees hildy come through the portal, he watches his father grow up on speedrun and he understands his father better. But he will never be a part of his design, he will never be so cruel and twisted and horrible as his father was, not only to him but to all of Oakvale as well. “I know who i am now” is pretty straightforward, and yet so impactful. After Oakvale, Henry knows who he is, he knows his past, he has a better connection to himself and to his family. “I know who you are now/and I name you my enemy” Henry takes a stand against his father. His father has gone too far, hurt to many people, and has hurt Henry's own children. And Henry will not sit back and let this go on any further, he names his father his enemy, and will do whatever it takes to defeat him. “I know who i am now/i know who i want to be '' Henry will be his own person, he will not copy his fathers mistakes, he will be better. His sons, his two beautiful boys, will only know love and support from him no matter what. God, I'm emotional over this song. Christ okay. “I want to be more than/this devil inside of me” is henry about the doodler, this family curse that has affected him and his sons since they were all born.

HEHEHEHE of course you'd ask for the mans himself- This post wont make sense to anyone but you or me but here we go!!

First of all, you have unlocked a freshly cleaned up playlist. (Though, while it used to just be Wither-Grian, it's now very much in Wither/Watcher/sort of Deity/Headcanon Grian territory lol. It's also in chronological order from the main timeline that we've talked about - best I could manage, at least.)

For more specific songs- I'm not sure if I have any that i associate with only the wither, rather than wither-watcher Grain man, but let's see... 1 - There's Terrible Things by Brick+Mortar, which is mostly about just the Wither and Glitches influencing his mind and worsening during Third Life and Last Life. Those two series specifically because the song mentions things happening in the person's dreams/sleep, and I'm still running with the headcanon where _Life SMP seasons happen while Hermits, Emperors and the others are asleep in Hermitcraft, Empires or whatever their base world is right now. (YouTube link for the song is here if you don't have spotify) 2 - Arsonist's Lullabye by Hozier is about Grian's relationship to his Glitched Wither condition and the destructive powers it wields. If I recall, you actually were the one to suggest me this song for my Grian, and it worked really really well, I do have to say.

4 - Ok this one probably only fully makes sense if you live in my brain but while I was cleaning up the playlist I looked for a song with "ban" in the name and found this song called Banish the Banshee and I just feel it fits Wither!Grian's ban from hermitcraft so much. look the lyrics make sense in my brain ok kfsdkjfh-- oh yeah and in my brain the first part of the song is abt him getting kicked out by the watchers bc he draws a lot of parallels between that and the hc ban in his mind

5 - Animal by The Living Tombstone. I don't think I need to explain this one much. "I learned it from the best," You tease, guiding him through the door. You help him take off his shoes before leading him to the kitchen table. He watches from there as you fill up a glass of water and rummage through is medicine cabinet.

He gives a very sudden solemn sigh. "You deserve better." You throw him a concerned glance over your shoulder. What prompted him to say that? You walk back carefully with glass and medicine in tow.

"Don't I get a say in it?"

"I'm rotten work." He takes the medicine and glass and gulps it all down in one go. "I'll ruin you- you really don't deserve that." He stands up with a slight wobble.

"Chil..." You hesitantly reach out for him, but he shoots you a look that renders you unmoving.

as for book recs, i'm currently reading "l'amica geniale" by elena ferrante; it's soo good i love it! all the characters are fascinating and very complex & it's such a page-turner, i literally can't put it down (i went back to reading while climbing up and down the stairs, anything to read a few more lines xD!)

another book i picked up at my local library was 'east of eden' by steinbeck. i'd never read anything by him so i didn't know what to expect, but i loved it!! it focuses on the life of two families in California & i love that the plot is really character-driven, every character is so interesting ... i kept thinking about that book for weeks after having finished it! so yeah pls read it so i can gush about it with someone xD!

i've also started reading war and peace on a whim, and i feel like a lot of people are intimidated by the size (i believe there are other a thousand pages? my edition published it in two parts for it to fit lol) but i found it very readable! it's like, 90% of dialogue and it's soo well-written!! and i was so engrossed in all the family drama xD it was like reading a jane austen book, only with a lot more characters

the longest fic I've been keeping up with this year is the fragments in which we fit together by stormflight777 on AO3. it's a bertholdt x reader AOT rewrite and currently the fic is a little over 430K words.

15) favourite headcanon of the year

okay, I have two for Steve from Stranger Things:

the reason Steve overreacted to (incorrectly assuming) Nancy cheated on him in S1 and why he's still hung-up on her after she did cheat on him (with the same guy who he thought she cheated with in S1, no less) is that his father constantly cheats on his mother, and he's watched her continue to forgive his father for it every time.

Steve's D&D class is a Swashbuckling Rogue and I refuse to believe otherwise.

A Swashbuckler is a flashy, showy, bombastic adventuring type, usually but not necessarily a swordsman. In Dungeons and Dragons 5e, the Swashbuckler is a Roguish Archetype specializing in a mix of Charismatic Panache and being an expert duelist. I've found a lot of really good music this year, but "Blood Upon the Snow" by Hozier immediately gave me chills the first time I heard it, so I have to give it to the man. "Time She Takes" by Sumbuck was also a favorite this year.

i wanted a song for jayce more at the beginning, where him and viktor are both so optimistic about what this can do. “It’s not qutie done, but it’s time to fix what’s wrong,” but the beginning really foreshadows how it goes with “started with the right intentions but left them on the shelf,” becuase intially that just refers to going behind the academy’s back to do this, but eventually it’s so much more serious

My altar is full of loves delusions” “I’m scared to lose what’s left and I should forget but I love what’s left” showing that even once she starts to hear things negative about powder she still is rooting for her no matter what

so this is mostly a silco song and then jinx. The lyrics apply to him, but I also think it shows how he connects so well to jinx and how he raised her. Also I think it’s clever that he’s her father figure, she’s an arsonist ykty, and even how he “keeps her on a leash” in the way he tells her not to tame her demons but to leash them

i wanted this to be a song where different lyrics correspond to different people, mostly revolving around Vi’s experiences. “If I did it could u be the only one who understood? If I say sorry would you tell me I did everything I could?” Is how jinx tells vi that she’s changed and vi keeps assuring her that it’s okay, and that she did what she had to. but you also have soldier girl drama going on at the same time, so we switch to “you’re prettier than anything I’ve seen in my whole life” yet later its ‘you said goodbye” from soldier girl. “Evil secret you’re the precious thing I hide” is like how vi is still trying to protect jinx but keeps it secret from soldier girl. And the lyric “I’d be foolish if I trusted you after everything you’ve done” really applies to all of them

this is for when vi leaves caitlyn, because she really did go out of her normal life and the rules mostly for herself but for Vi too. I don’t want it to seem like it’s too toxic, just that caitlyn feels left behind and even says “I’d do it all again” (also don’t take this one too seriously, caitlyn had her own motivations aside from vi but I still think it fits)

I personally am. It’s time for Nesta’s story (and not just hers) to be told. So, this leads to another thing I think (and hope) you’ve been waiting for.

LET’S EXPLAIN THE PLAYLIST! (Read every song’s meaning while or after reading the book) And thank you for all your love and support.

“Alone” by Melancholia: It describes the Cauldron scene at the beginning of the book. In this song you can feel the rage and how hard she’s struggling. This song is not about weakness. It’s about her strength.

“Impossible” by James Arthur: Chapter 1. Even if it’s not so clear in this chapter, I think this song represents how Cassian feels when Nesta’s around. He feels worthless and not so different from the other men she beds (as he thought in ACOFAS). He lost his hope of an happy future with the woman he loves and he feels like he’s breaking that last promise she made her. Everything just seems so impossible.

“Sister” by The Black Keys: Chapter 2. This just makes me think of Feyre and Nesta’s fight. It’s from Feyre’s pov.

“New House” by Toro y Moi: “I want a brand new house Something I can not buy, something I can afford I just want a long shower I been feeling so crowded” Chapter 3. It’s about Nesta settling down in the House of Wind. It’s not the place she feels she can call “home”. First of all, it’s not really hers. The last two sentences of this verse are about her breathing and trying to calm herself at the end of the chapter. She’s just tired.

“My Mother & I” by Lucy Dacus: Chapter 4. The whole song is about Nesta and the relationship with her mother when she was a child. I think there’s nothing else to say. Also, in the 1st Chapter it says that she’s born in spring, so the song talks about a girl who was born in May. It all fits.

“Teacher’s Pet” by Melanie Martinez”: “Teacher’s pet If I’m so special, why am I secret? Yeah, why the fuck is that? Do you regret The things we shared that I’ll never forget? Well, do you? Tell me that I know I’m young, but my mind is well beyond my years I knew this wouldn’t last, but fuck you, don’t you leave me here” Chapter 5 and 6. Nesta and Cassian’s first day of training together. She basically doesn’t want to act like she’s his pet and she’s got to do whatever he want just to respect her sister’s will.

“Dangerous Man” by Valley Of Wolves: “They say I’m a wanted man Holding line and break the fire I’m setting all the captives free But I’m hanging by a wire” Chapter 7. It’s about Eris and his double-cross. That’s how probably Cassian pictures Eris in his mind tbh.

“Control” by Halsey: Chapter 8. Nesta facing the stairs. It can be linked to other chapters too because if you take this song as a whole and not just a few verses, it really contains A LOT of things. For example, the line “The House was awake”. Also Chapter 9, when people start calling their children. You can find this moment in the song when it says “All the kids cried out ‘please stop, you’re scaring me”.

“Bookstore Girl” by Charlie Burg: Chapter 9. The bookstore girl is Gwyn and Nesta tries to know more about her.

“Wrong Direction” by Hailee Steinfeld: “I don’t hate you” Chapter 12. This song is about the chapter’s ending.

“You’ve Got a Friend In Me” by Cavetown: Chapter 13. Nesta and Gwyn’s interaction. Also, Nesta helping her.

“like that” by Bea Miller: Chapter 16. Nesta and Cassian’s tension is hilarious, but this song makes me thing about this scene so much.

“Queen” by Shawn Mendes: Chapter 17. Elain fighting with Nesta. This lyrics is so powerful. The first part is Elain talking to Nesta. The second part is Nesta talking to Elain.

“You’ll Follow Me Down” by Skunk Anansie: Chapter 17. Same scene. This is totally Nesta. She’s so scared of herself and of the world that surrounds her. She’s afraid to lose her sister in this world she still knows nothing about if not violence. She wants Elain by her side, even if it means dragging her down with her.

“Teeth” by 5 Seconds of Summer: Chapters 18/19. I like to call it “THE chapter”. Do you need me to explain why I chose this song? Um, I don’t think so. You know it.

“Only You” by Ellie Goulding: “Baby I’m on my knees” Chapter 22. He’s... returning the favor.

“Revolution” by Diplo, Faustix, Imanos, Kai: Chapter 24. Our girl Nesta knows what she’s doing. What she’s starting.

“Best Friend for Hire” by Anthony Amorim: Chapter 25. The whole song is about Nesta and Emerie’s interaction. Everytime I listen to it I can’t help but cry.

“Moment’s Silence (Common Tongue)” by Hozier: Chapter 26.  Nesta’s worried about Cassian and gives him relief.

“Rise Up” by Andra Day: Chapters 27/28. These three girls are going to rise up, bitches.

“Nina Cried Power” by Hozier, Mavie Staples: Chapter 29. This song is really powerful, just like Nesta. She always is, but in this chapter we learn HOW MUCH.

“Fix Me Now” by Garbage: “Bring me back to life (fix me now) Kiss me blind” Chapter 31. THAT scene. HE HEATED UP THE WHOLE ROOM Y’ALL. Cassian literally kissed her back to life.

“Ready or Not” by Fugees: Chapters 34/35/36. I can’t choose only one quote from this song. But can you hear its vibes? Nesta’s leading a dead army. This is THE power. 

“PILLOWTALK” by ZAYN: Chapter 37. *wink* This song says everything.

“Go Fuck Yourself” by Two Feet: Always chapter 37. I couldn’t choose just one song, you know. Also, lowkey Chapter 38.

“Never Again” by Breaking Benjamin: “Never again, never again Time will ot take the life from me” Chapter 38′s ending. All I can say is: NEVER AGAIN.

“Boy In The Bubble” by Alec Benjamin: Not linked to just one chapter. It makes me thing of Azriel a lot.

“Past Lives” by BØRNS: “I've got the strangest feeling This isn't our first time around Past lives couldn't ever come between us Some time the dreamers finally wake up Don't wake me I'm not dreaming“ Chapter 39. Gwyn and Azriel. Well, these lines are about them, but I think the rest of the song represents Elain and Azriel, too. I don’t know if you feel the same.

“Watch Me While I Bloom” by Hayley Williams: Chapter 41. Nesta teaching Cassian how to treat a woman. She’s got big dick energy ayeee

“R U Mine?” by Arctic Monkeys: Still chapter 41. Cassian taking control of the situation. This song just screams “dominant” lmao.

“Walls Could Talk” by Halsey: So Halsey once said “The House was awake” (Control). What if those Walls Could Talk? Like, poor thing. It could have a mental breakdown. This song is dedicated to the House of Wind ‘cause it needs respect. It’s alive. Just imagine how’d you feel watching non-stop those two fucking and fighting. Also Azriel, you’re loved.

“Despicable” by grandson: “If I were you I wouldn’t love me neither” Chapter 43. Tamlin deserves a song, too.

“Part Of Me” by Katy Perry: Chapters 45/46. It’s all SO chaotic. This song means a lot of things. They all lied to her, but this song is particularly about Nesta and Amren’s fight. In my opinion, she did the right think telling Feyre the truth ‘cause she deserved to know, but it just wasn’t the right time and space.

“Don’t Give Up On Me” by Andy Grammer: Chapter 47. Cassian’s going to take care of Nesta. She made a mistake but she knows here better than anyone. He won’t give up on her.

“There You Are” by ZAYN: Chapter 50. Cassian comforts Nesta when she finally explodes. He’s there for her with open arms.

“You Found Me” by The Fray: Still Chapter 50. This chapter was so hard to read and this is another song that can describe it best.

“Locked Out Of Heaven” by Bruno Mars: Chapter 51. Illyrian bat boys just love flat objects. I see.

“Thin White Lies” by 5 Seconds of Summer: Chapter 51. Yeah, still thinking about that desk.

“Chosen Family” by Rina Sawayama: Still Chapter 51. This song is wholly dedicated to Nesta’s new found family. Not only Gwyn and Emerie, but also Cassian.

“Library Magic” by The Head And The Heart: Chapter 52. Listen to this song and read the scene at the beginning of the chapter.

“Battle Cry” by Imagine Dragons: Chapter 54. I know it’s weird but I feel this song talks about Lanthys and Nesta’s fight.

“Hurt” by Christina Aguilera: Chapter 55. Nesta takes Cassian to the place she lived with her family in the mortal lands. It’s dirty and broken now but it’s still there. Nes talks about her father and realizes how much he’s done for her and her sisters.

“Story Of Another Us” by 5 Seconds of Summer: Chapter 56. I know this sounds like a sad song but to me it represents Gwyn’s present. The story of their past (of another “them”) and also their present.

“Drama Club” by Melanie Martinez: Chapter 57. Eris vibes, y’all. I know you can feel them. Everytime I listen to this song I can’t help but thinking of him. So the only thing I can tell you is: listen carefully.

“Genius” by Sia, Diplo, Labrinth: Chapter 57. Hear this song. It just makes me think of a ballroom where two people try to talk to other people and they’re avoiding to make eye contact. And they fail (yeah, those people are Cassian and Nesta btw)

“Therefore I Am” by Billie Eilish: Chapter 57. Still about Eris, but also Cassian. They can’t stand each other. So imagine the astronomical energy (inside of this bus lmfao) when Nesta comes in between.

“All About Us” by He Is We, Owl City: Chapter 57. Nessian dancing.

“Rock Bottom” by Hailee Steinfeld ft. DNCE: Chapter 58. This song is SO accurate. This is the moment I realized “That’s it. I think I can die happy now” and then I started crying. Nesta just thinking she’s not enough and she deserves to be with someone as ugly as she thinks she is. Cassian is like “shut the hell up, woman” and yeah. That’s the kind of energy and conversation I was waiting for.

“Stop Crying Your Heart Out” by Oasis: Chapter 58. Their life becomes brighter. They have to stop crying their heart out because of their fears and the emotions they keep trying to hide. They need to feel free and express all the love they can give to each other.

“Fade Into You” by Nashville Cast, Sam Palladio, Clare Bowen: Chapter 58. Finally the truth comes out and everything becomes real. Even if the song is pretty sad, the lyrics is just SO accurate and it describes the scene perfectly.

“I Miss You” by Adele: Chapter 59. Basically Nesta feeling needy ‘cause she doesn’t see Cassian for days, but it’s more than that. Pay attention to the depth of the song. It shakes you. And that’s what Nesta feels when she thinks of Nesta.

“Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera: Chapter 59/61. I want to dedicate it to my favorite girls in this book: Nesta, Emerie and Gwyn. They’ve been through a lot but they also learnt to face their fears. And they realized that unity is strength.

“Smile” by Uncle Kracker: Chapter 62. Cassian’s sooo happy to be with Nesta it breaks my heart. And his own too.

“Broken Pieces” by 5 Seconds of Summer: Chapter 62. Aaand here we go again. Cassian just wants Nesta to give him the chance to be happy with her.

“Carried Away” by H.E.R.: Chapter 62. Nesta thinks they got too carried away and now they’re at a point of no return. She opened herself to him too much. It’s not like she regrets this but she understands that now everything’s too real and changing. She doesn’t feel ready.

"What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes: Ending of Chapter 63. Okay, I’ll make you laugh but this is me after reading it. I needed to put a song about how I felt when I read this freaking ending, after all the devastation Chapter 62 brought into my heart. And the fact that Nesta’s 25 and the first line begins with “25 years”... I DIED. Also I think of her just screaming to the word “WHAT’S GOING ON?!”.

“Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves” by Eurythmics ft. Aretha Franklin: Chapters 64/65/66. DO I NEED TO DESCRIBE IT? NAH, I DON’T THINK SO. THESE GIRLS ARE POWERFUL, STRONG AND SMART AS HELL.

“Run The World (Girls)” by Beyoncé Chapters 67/68/69/70. The girls want to win and they’re going to conquer everything with no mercy.

“Puppets” by Depeche Mode: Chapter 71. Eris impotence t is heartbreaking.

“Warriors” by Imagine Dragons: This song is for every character. It’s about Nesta, Emerie and Gwyn, but also Cassian, Azriel and Eris. They’re fighting different battles and they’re doing it with every ounce of power they have.

“Emperor’s New Clothes” by Panic! At The Disco: Chapter 74. Nesta kicking Briallyn’s ass.

“Survivor” by Destiny’s Child: This song is dedicated to Emerie and Gwyn. They spent all their lives learning how to survive. At the end, they finally won.

“Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele: THE Nessian Anthem. I put this here ‘cause FINALLY they’re endgame. But something bad’s about to happen...

“Cancer” by My Chemical Romance: Chapter 76. This chapter’s been the hardest one to face. I had to put the book down for a minute and breathe. I know this song made you panic and ow you know why I chose it. I can’t stop crying thinking about Feyre in those conditions and all the IC and her sisters surrounding her. I’m still so heartbroken.

“You Saved Me” by Skunk Anansie: Chapter 77. Nesta cares about Feyre. She’s her little sister and she just can’t let her die like that. She gave her a happy ending even if Nes had to lose almost every ounce of power she had and learned to accept. But they’re worthless in comparison with her sisters life. She just loves them both. She’d do anything for them and this scene proves it.

“Lean on Me” by Bill Withers: This song is about friendship and sisterhood. Nesta’s relationship with Gwyn and Emerie, but also with Feyre and Elain (and lowkey Rhys). Also, I dedicate it to little Nyx, too. They all love you, babyboy, and would do anything for you. Welcome to this chaotic world, kid!

“Sorry” by Halsey: Chapter 78. These are not explicit apologies. Nesta doesn’t need to say “sorry” vocally. She already demonstrated it. Her actions speak louder than words and her sister know it. This song is not about a “romantic lover” but a “person who loves” and they all love too much and strongly.

“Amazing” by Aerosmith: WE FINALLY SEE THE LIGHT. This is the happy ending they deserve (but the cliffhanger is killing me tbh). It’s about everyone in this book. I put it in the playlist ‘cause at first I thought it could refer to Azriel and Cassian. But the more i listened to it, the more I realized it just describes every single character.
