im prob reading too far into this but ur response to the collaring question really recontextualizes the title of the series: "Do It For Me". it's not just a catchy/sexy little phrase that sounds like a dom command/something catra might even say to adora. it reflects what u said about bdsm and sex in general: do what works for you and your partner. "Do It For Me" is a brilliant title because the whole series is about catradora figuring out what DOES it for them, ie what works for them as a couple

"Do It For Me" is a song by Rosenfeld that is actually... kinda about sexual manipulation, but has a lot of sexy dom vibes at the same time. It was on the Beg For Me playlist, and like you said, had the dom vibes for when I went to name the series, but it was also about the more emotional side of the relationship. Adora respecting Catra's boundaries and listening to what she actually wants instead of, say, working herself into the ground and totally ignoring Catra as a result because she thinks succeeding is what Catra needs rather than doing what she actually wants. Catra taking care of Adora, respecting her boundaries as well and meeting her emotional needs so she doesn't feel like she has to kill herself to be loved. They both had things they needed to do for the other in order for them both to be healthy, especially healthy together.

Adding onto the context of doing what works for sex and BDSM wasn't in my initial inspiration for it because that was kind of "covered" by the sexy dom-orders side, but you are absolutely right!.

thank you but it has been a calendar year since the first fic XD i still have a list of like ten fics for the series, i just haven't really had interest in writing BDSM or smut in general, but that's why I went for the one fic in the series that wasn't outlined to have any LOL. there's been a couple times when ive been like "damn i really want to do that one" because it was a really interesting topic to explore to me. my entire outline for it was this: (glimmer and bow having a kid) "I cant believe we're settling down and you're wearing a fucking collar to work"

Monica depending on what she’s blushing about and the situation, has two modes; look away, flustered, with pursed lips and fiddle with her fingers/hair and roll her eyes orrr you’ve found something really embarrassing abt her or you’re Jamil, and you said something nice/sweet to her. Close friends like @millybesippin’s oc, @hey-its-cweepy, and Phoebus, for example, see her do a second one sometimes. The second one is just her full one covering her face with either her hands or entire face planted into her arms on a table. If Monica doesn’t have a table to face plant on, she’ll scoff whatever’s making her blush and sputter out a response. It really depends on the severity of it xD. Her skin is a little dark, so she’s grateful that her blushing cheeks so too much. But that doesn’t mean her cheeks aren’t burning up like a volcano!! Overall her reactions are very cute.

Oh boy. This guy xDD, his cheeks are bright and deep red and he makes some effort to hide them in his hand. Its almost laughable, seeing this bad boy be reduced to a blushing mess. This only happens when you shower him with compliment after compliment. He has a talent of knowing if you’re telling the truth or not but if Zane’s gut feeling says you’re being true. Oh man. Zane cups the bottom half of his face and looks away with a flustered gaze towards the ground and will try to refute it. But if he’s comfortable around you to let his facade of “R.S.A Bad Boy,” slip, he’ll have this hUGE boyish grin on his face, his freckles subtly stand out when he’s this bright red but it’s so endearing. His coffee brown eyes will shine with what’s akin to childhood joy. But it won’t last for long I’m afraid. So you better drink up all of his blushing face whilst you can, my dear!

Leif, the cutie. He has no idea how to handle his blushing. In his young life, he worked as a delivery boy for his father for his work, and while he did interact with kids his age. His father tried to make his son happy and have an everyday life, but at the end of the day. He’d be bone tired and play with him only a short time. It was quite rare for him to have a lot of friends on delivery and before his father’s marriage into the Trein Family. Once he did have wasn’t the best… As he’d soon know. Due to this, Leif has kind of made an arm's length between them and himself. As his dad married Trein’s daughter, Leif had two step-brothers. But because of how starkly different they are, the twins never tried to make him blush. However, let’s say he does madly blush. This usually occurs when he’s complimented on his skills like sewing and his innate ability to speak to all sorts of rodents. His fair cheeks burst into red, and the nape of his neck gets warm too. He’ll rub the back of his neck and avoid all eye contact.

Shu, the bastard, owns it like a boss 🤣. His students might tease him over a “purposeful” mispronouncing a name, and he just brightly smiling, his cheeks if you look hard enough, you’ll see his cheeks deepen. His skin’s on the darker side as well especially in the warmer seasons, so you rarely see him burst into flame, but there are other tell-tale signs. Press his buttons too much with teasing and he might get snippy with you, Shu doesn’t mean to. But it does remind him of his brothers constant “teasing,” and it makes him feel small. So,, try to be cordial and considerate of what’s too much…

Like Leif, this little guy doesn’t handle blushing well, but he has sisters, sooo, and he’s teased a lot. But all in good fun, I assure you!! His cheeks burst to life. He’s a deep red, much like the red rose he’s lovingly nicknamed after. He’ll cling to his Dodo stuffy and press the soft toy to his face, trying to hide his adorable face. If he doesn’t have Cap. Dodo by his side (which is extremely rare) he’ll cling to his parents or Big Brother’s leg and hide behind them. When Tiflo sees his baby brother cling to his leg, he’ll gently pat his head and coo that he has the cutest little brother. But when his sisters are the ones teasing him, Vitaa especially. Rosie’s fair dusted red cheeks will puff out and he’ll cross his arms. When he’s older though, Rosie will still be blushing madly but shyly look away as he pushes up his glasses.

No. Im embarrassed you remember i held that opinion. I had such an incorrect secondhand idea of the show. I was hurt a lot by previous cowardly examples so when I heard of another "they only kiss in the finale" pairing I wasn't exactly jumping for joy.

However, nobody told me about how the show was openly gay from Princess Prom.

I don't mean the Catradora dance, of course I'd heard of that. I mean Catra taking Scorpia to the ball, Scorpia CLEARLY being in love with her and asking her out early on the next season. I mean Catra saying "She stole my food and asked me to spy on people with her, is this what love feels like?", about another girl, to make Adora jealous. I really do think that's some of the most textually gay things that would've aired on kids tv around the time. THE most gay content with "human" characters, ez.

The rest of the first season is also pretty gay. If Catra and Adora's lovers quarrel isn't enough, you have Mermista admitting she wants to join the rebellion because She-Ra's hot, Catra doing that... oddly gay as fuck manipulative intimacy on Entrapta (we have joked about this endlessly), Adora and Glimmer obviously crushing on one another, and then a literal gay couple show up in the season finale.

This isn't touching on what was in the later seasons that I knew nothing about. Adora's thirsting for Huntara (I saw this in a youtube video so I guess I did know), Scorpia's explicitly romantic interest in Catra, her eventual blooming relationship to Perfuma, Entrapta naming all her machines after girls and being explicitly gay for a space ship of all things, Catra and Glimmer's shocking romantic tension, Sea Hawk's agressive bisexuality, Bow's gay dads (though sadly they have a whole 2 appearances), and Spinerella and Netossa being extremely openly married in season 5.

As for Catradora, yeah, I explained how I wasn't sold on them until season 5, when Shadow Weaver saw how happy Catra made Adora and hated this, and used the same rhetoric as me - "haven't you hurt each other enough?" - to drive them apart. I do not believe I have ever 180'd on a ship so hard as when continuing to dislike it would make me be like Shadow Weaver.

Camillo and Dolores’ dynamic:

When it was time for Dolores to get her gift, she got too nervous and tried switching places with Camillo.

This maybe would had worked... if camillo wasnt a 1yo at the time.

She did changed camillo into her clothes and tried to get on his. Didnt fit but did hide under the bed and expected it to work.

“ What?! It was a fool’s proof plan! ”

Once Mirabel and Camillo heard this story later on, they exchange places all the time and do favors for each other. At least til Camillo gets his gift,then only Mirabel changes clothes.

Dolores knows and has to hide it.

She did tells when they were about 9 and abuela asked ‘Camillo’ to help by shapeshifting for an adult so he could help with like... i dunno maybe putting something up or something like that.

She inmediadly tells on them. How the aftermath went ill leave it to your imagination.

Camillo stole Dolores’ shampoo for a while. She was wondering how could she spend so much til Felix notices and asks Camillo to stop. Went to tell her, but she already had heard it.

Not really the best combo usually, even if Camillo bothers Isabella more. But when they gotta work together they’re a chaos duo, very well coordinated.

Dolores headcanons:

Lil crackhead when younger.

She probably used to believe on love happening like on a 2000s high school movie when she was younger.

Yknow, walking on the higway with heavy books on your arms for no reason, crash onto each other, ”sorry,my bad” said on unison, they help you pick everything up, you loook at their eyes like youre dissociating a little, and then get stuck on that person and everyone knows the movie its about those two, and its gonna be cheesy.

She meet Mariano this way...except more realistic. She was carrying a basket with idk fruit to home, wasnt looking were she was walking cause she was concentrating on hearing something, hit mariano, tripped on her own feet, fell on the floor and all the fruit went rolling. She was annoyed and then Mariano helped her because, thats normal to do, and i like to think hes a nice person and just doesnt know to space his pace on relationships a little because of examples he has seen. So yeah, that happens and she goes walking home thinking “wow, i cant believe that happen... i think im in love. We must be destined together ”

Her view in love has changed with the years, but still has the crush on Mariano and has some of hopeless romantic still on her.

Loves her hair but hates how much hair keeping she has to do sometimes.

Would dance non stop at parties if she didnt got nervous at the thought of so much people watching her do it.

Camillo headcanons:

Tried to teach the rats for that one “ 7 ft frame, rats along his back, when he tells your name it all fades to black ” dance.

Thinks he suceeded when the rats follow the coreography, in reality Bruno teached them while he was sleeping.

Very proud of himself til Bruno tells him, then asks Bruno how to train rats.

Chaos of rats shenanigans for a week.

Mom’s boy. Just not very noticeable at first cause yknow teenager.

Will shapeshift into people, but having slightly bigger hair or gigant hands or something he finds funny about them, kinda like double trouble making adora’s hair as high as possible. (i actually think i saw this when he turned onto felix by being smaller, but im not sure)

Just likes to exgerate things a ton on general. Theather kid stuff.

Almost teared up a little when first ate a chocolate filled arepa (pancakes basically).

She-Ra High School Theatre Kid AU Headcanons

I made this because I am a theatre kid, and me and my sister were talking about Double Trouble being a theatre kid, so this happened. We basically came up with this entire au while we walked our dog.

Also I know none of this stuff would ever happen in real life, but it’s fanfiction, let me have this

Horde Prime is the principal who is very not supportive of the arts

Hordak is the head of tech

Castaspella runs costumes

Huntara is the choreographer

Actors:

Catra - Has been in love with theatre since she was a kid, wants to be an actress when she grows up. She’s only ever cast as the villain/antagonist because she’s so good at playing those roles, but she’s not complaining. Shadow Weaver hates her and constantly talks down to her whenever Angella’s not around. Really good singer.

Double Trouble - Also in love with theatre. Brings the drama. Really good at whatever role they receive. Always competes with Sea Hawk for the lead role regardless of gender.

Sea Hawk - Theatre kid is his entire personality and he lives for it. Competes with Double Trouble for the lead role regardless of gender. Loves roles that get to do fight choreography. Has a habit of setting at least one prop, set, or costume on fire every show. No one knows how, and honestly, neither does he.

Glimmer - Director kid vibes, we’ve all met one. You know what I’m talking about. Usually gets a big speaking role, but not the lead. Jealous of Catra bc Glimmer thinks the villains get better songs. Catra agrees and holds it over her head constantly. Has a habit of being an “actor director” sometimes, but never in a mean or condescending way, and most of the time Angella was going to give the same note. Most of the time.

Bow - Actor/Techie. Auditions for a role, but if he doesn’t get one, he’ll do tech. He doesn’t have a preference, he just likes being a part of the process and being with his friends. One of the only basses in the department.

Mermista - Actor/stage manager. Even when she has a role in the current show, Mermista is still the stage manager bc she’s the only one who can deal with and control everyone’s shit(aka Sea Hawk level shenanigans). Actually a really good actor when she puts effort into her roles, but it has to be for a show she actually likes.

Kyle - Usually ensemble, but sometimes he has small speaking roles. Famous for breaking or losing props.

Techies:

Entrapta - Sound/lights. Works with Hordak, they’re close friends. He’s dreading her graduation bc she’s the only who actually understands how to run the systems. She insists she’ll be back tho.

Scorpia - Build crew. Stronk. Nuff said. Started bc she wanted to support Catra, and kept doing it bc she thought the head costumer was cute.

Adora - Also build crew. Again, stronk. Paints occasionally because that was her first choice, but they lack muscle strength in build. Can only get away with painting if Lonnie is there that day. Joined to watch Catra and Catra only. Has only listed to the songs that Catra sings in her role. Has never listened to a full Broadway album. Glimmer is disappointed.

Lonnie - Build crew. Not that interested but comes to support her friends when she doesn’t have lacrosse practice. Never runs a show, but watches every night.

Rogelio - Paint crew. Adora lost an arm wrestling contest to him, and he got first choice. She’s forever salty for it but too nice to argue.

Perfuma - Head of costumes. Castaspella and her get along great, they practically have the same personality. Crushing on Scorpia.

Frosta - Costumes. Cousins with Mermista. Comes bc she heard about the chaos and drama that goes down. Will run shows if she doesn’t have hockey practice.

Swift Wind - Fly.

Now for the plot:

The show for the year: Wicked

But then two tragedies occurred

Tragedy 1: Angella had to step down as director bc Micah was in the hospital or something idk

Tragedy 2: 2 days later, Sea Hawk breaks his leg pretty bad and he won’t be better in time for the show

Le gasp

So Shadow Weaver takes over as director

Some Shadow Weaver background info: She was a famous actress many years ago and thinks this high school production stuff is below her. She still has a lot of connections to the professional world that she uses from time to time. She wants Adora to follow in her footsteps as a famous actor despite Adora being an incredibly bad actor. She hates that Adora does crew and not acting, but couldn’t do anything about it. Until now.

Now that she’s director and they’re down a Fiyero, she basically forces Adora to play Fiyero, despite the other capable actors who could’ve done it and Adora’s own protests. Think something like: “why can’t bow do it? I’ll be the wizard if there really aren’t enough actors!” “Oh no, bow is the only one who can hit the wizards notes bla bla bla”

Adora doesn’t want to do it, but she also doesn’t want the department to not be able to do the show. Plus she would get to hang out with Catra a lot which would be cool

I’m guessing you can already tell where the conflict is coming from, but we had some very clear ideas of stuff that happened, like

Adora was behind bc she wasn’t going to play the role originally, she’s never acted before, and she can’t dance. So she has a lot of one on one practices with Huntara, the choreographer. Before getting the role, the only practices Adora would watch if she didn’t have crew were the dance practices. She went purely to watch Catra, but Catra thinks that she has a crush on Huntara.

Tension and miscommunication, y’know?

Bow and Glimmer are both very supportive but also nervous bc they know that Adora is extremely bad at acting

Sea Hawk has never seen Adora try to act before, so he doesn’t see what the issue is. Once he’s well enough to go to school again, he comes to every rehearsal even tho he can’t be in the show. And then he sees. And then he’s like, oh no.

But he tries to be supportive and pump Adora up.

Adora is feeling a lot of pressure bc of her new role and doesn’t want to screw things up for everyone.

Catra is a little pissed off that she’s been paired up with someone who can’t act for her senior show, so she’s a little snippy at first, and Adora is tense, and it’s a mess

But Shadow Weaver doesn’t care, and ends up blaming every problem they have during an acting scene with Adora and Catra on Catra, even though she’s the best actor in the department. Because ✨favoritism✨

And you know, they do the whole hot-cold, she hates me, she’s cute, I love her but she doesn’t like me, bla bla bla throughout the course of the show

A week before opening night, Shadow Weaver makes things worse by mentioning that she invited her friend who’s a talent scout to watch the show. Shadow Weaver wants the scout to help get Adora into the acting business.

Catra wants to use this opportunity to get her name out there, so she needs her performance to be perfect

Which is hard to do when her love interest couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag

It’s two days before the show and they still haven’t practiced the kiss scene. Every time they brought it up before, like “should we practice the kiss? I mean, only if you want we don’t have to”, they both got the impression that the other didn’t want to kiss them

So it’s 2 days before the show, and Shadow Weaver is like, you gotta practice the kiss

So they kiss, and Catra is like, whoa she’s a really good kisser, so she’s quiet after the kiss

And of course, Adora takes that silence as “she hated the kiss and she hates me” as you do

So their practices the next two days are even worse than they were before

Finally, it’s opening night. The scout is coming and they’re out of time. Shadow Weaver ends up shoving Catra and Adora into a closet. She does her whole “you don’t want to let me, your friends, or the audience down do you? Whatever’s distracting you needs to go” to Adora, and then she turns to Catra and is like “fix what you’ve done, I know you sabotaged her you useless child. You’re going to be the reason this show goes horribly” and then she leaves

AND CATRA AND ADORA ACTUALLY TALK I KNOW IM SHOCKED TOO

Adora’s like, sorry I’ve been so weird the past two days, I just realized I really like you after we kissed, but I know you don’t feel that way about me, sorry if that makes it weird

And Catra’s like, Adora you idiot I love you

And they kiss

And Bow finds them still kissing in the closet 20 minutes before the show opens and rushes them to Castaspella to get their make up fixed

It ends up being Adora’s best performance because every time they’re about to go on for a scene together, Catra tells her to forget about the audience and just focus on her

The scout ended up liking Catra and Double Trouble a lot to Shadow Weaver’s disappointment

Facts that aren’t important to the main plot, but definitely happened

One time, before Sea Hawk broke his leg, Catra was trying out her harness for the defying gravity and other flying scenes, and Swift Wind, who does fly, accidentally dropped her and she landed on Adora

No Good Deed was the best moment in the show, and the amount of emotion Catra was able to put into her performance during that song was a little frightening but also made a lot of people tear up

The second best scene in the show was surprisingly As Long as you’re Mine, because Adora was actually able to forget about the audience and just focus on her love for Catra

The show last year was Mean Girls. Catra was Regina. Glimmer was Gretchen(you can’t argue that she doesn’t give off, “I don’t think my father, the inventor of toaster stroodle, would be very pleased to hear about this” vibes). Mermista was surprisingly amazing as Karen, and played her deadpan perfectly. No one knows how she did it. Sea Hawk was Cady, Double Trouble was Janice, and Bow was Damien. They reference their experiences during this show during Wicked, but the only thing Adora remembers about that production is how hot Catra was during World Burn.

Ironically (or unironically, idk), Glimmer once said “I don’t think my mother, the director of the show, will be very pleased to hear about this” to an actor who was found sabotaging Catra’s mic for the show before Mean Girls. Catra thought Shadow Weaver put her up to it but there was no proof.

catra and adora have been in the foster system together for a long time (catra’s real name is catrina but when they were kids adora couldn’t pronounce her name correctly so the name catra just stuck)

they’ve always been paired in the same foster familes, dont ask me why they just are (soulmate tings amiright)

then they end up with shadow weaver during their middle school days with their foster siblings rogelio, lonnie, kyle, etc etc. idk what shadow weaver’s human name would be uhh fucking shanon?

catra and adora would protect each other from shadow weaver’s abuse and eventually that ended up with them both crushing on each other

adora was eventually adopted by angella, and she would be glimmer’s adoptive sister. glimmer’s just a nickname and i imagine glimmer’s actual name to be fuckin uhh gina??? i dont know i cant name characters

catra’s angry and sad because adora left her, but she eventually befriends scorpia (real name would be scarlett? it sounds nice) but is super toxic because of her abandonment issues

meanwhile adora befriends glimmer’s friends like mermista, (myra) perfuma (pearl), etc, the other princesses

she also adopts a cat she names swiftie

years pass and adora and catra end up in the same highschool

catra ends up being super rude and snide to adora and her friends because shes jealous and nobody really likes catra because shes... catra

also im tired of making up actual names so just. just think of their names as nicknames

some more thoughts on my old shera highschool au idea because i feel like procrastinating my own comic and im probably never going to come back to this idea at this point.

ok so basic premise is hordak is 18 and his main activity is running his minecraft server and associated discord server. the worlds name is TH3_FR1GHT_Z0N3 and the discord group is The Evil Horde. he made it when he was like 11 or something and takes it very seriously. hes built a small society of people committed to helping him complete some sort of minecraft based TASK but idk what it is.

wrong hordak is his little brother, about 14, who is BANNED from joining the server because he suffers from Every Video Game Is Animal Crossing disease and spends his time in the game running around befriending animals or engaging in light sabotage of his brothers plans (in the form of spawning animals in inconvenient places/letting creatures out of pens).

L0RDH0RDAK and wronghordak are their screen names. its implied that they have real names but the only other character who knows them in real life is entrapta and she only calls them by their screen names.

hordak is a super sheltered goth jehovahs witness kid who doesnt listen to anything other than christian radio music. he gets his sense of style from tv and movies and has no idea there is any connection with music and the goth style. spends all his money on fancy contacts and clothes/make-up ordered from questionable websites and fangs that look real. he has a full black and red gamer rig and headphones that he uses exclusively to play minecraft.

imp is there too. my 1st instinct is that hordaks a teen dad, but that might be too serious a concept for this dumb idea so he might also just be his baby brother. his baby brother who hordak is in charge of most of the child care of and dresses him in exclusively goth outfits, which is mostly seasonal Halloween clothes.

all the princesses are in middle school except entrapta, who goes to the same highschool as hordak and wrong hordak.

adora, catra, scorpia and the other horde kids are all unsupervised middle schoolers who have given themselves brainrot by getting deeply involved in hordaks little online mini cult. the other members of the princess alliance are in middle school and think the 'horde members' in their school are very weird. all of the same drama that happens in the show happens but its over adora leaving a discord server and theyre all 12.

shadow weaver is a 59 year old social worker and is exactly the same but minecraft again. shes the caseworker for adora and catra-- who are both orphans. idk if adora and catra know that shadow_weaver is their caseworkers screen name and shes a part of the server.

as stated before, entrapta is in highschool, but she lives on the same street as many of the princess alliance kids and kind of grew up with them, but was never really close with any of them. she lives next to mermista and has a crush on mermistas moms car and writes transformers fanfiction (+erotica).

she first makes friends with wrong hordak and goes to his and hordaks house after school to play their own game of minecraft, which mostly involves turning it into stardew valley as much as possible + entrapta practicing physics things. hordak sees this and is like !!!!!!

and thats how entrapta joins the horde......

it wouldnt be a true entrapdak fic because idk how to write romance stories but it would be clear that they liked each other and would eventually get together after highschool. :U it would be mostly about being a weird but very mild kid with only 1 or 2 friends, which i do know about.

yes Utena reference is cool but the original script was more fitting because it kept the motif of a cliff and of falling and Catra caught Adora instead of throwing her and even dug her claws into her skin to not let her fall

😦😦 anon...... the whole power of that scene is in adora making the choice for herself to take catra’s hand and accept her love. it wasnt about adora being saved by catra it was about her finding freedom in the love they shared together

this scene was mainly about adora’s character growth and a promise callback wouldve put the focus more on catra’s. but actually, the real version is much more meaningful for catra as well bc it symbolizes catra going from a selfish corrupt version of love she learned as a child to a pure selfless one, loving without asking for anything in return. in confessing her love, reaching out her hand, she offered adora a path to save herself instead of just catching her from falling. its about offering adora that agency which she was denied her whole life.

ik this sounds like im reading too much into a hand hold lmao but trust me .. the utena reference..... ljsdljlkjdl ugh fuck i wasnt planning on writing this meta right now lmao 😭 but i rly think its important to fully appreciate this scene. ok ill explain the scenario in utena first then relate it back to catradora

so in revolutionary girl utena theres this girl named anthy who suffers the pain of the whole world’s misogynistic abuse. she’s manipulated into believing its her fate, that she has no power to change it, that she isn’t allowed to have her own desires. already we can draw some comparisons between anthy and adora right

its also important to know that one of rgu’s core themes is deconstructing the classic fairy tale “princess is saved by a heroic prince” story and using it as a metaphor for misogyny, criticizing how women are taught to believe we are damsels in distress awaiting a man to come save us. we’re taught to believe that’s what love is--submission, possession, manipulation. a power dynamic first and foremost. 

in utena, this theme of women being controlled vs. taking agency is directly tied to real world issues, while she-ra’s metaphors are much less obvious (kid friendly i suppose). but that doesnt make them less impactful. adora was controlled first by the horde, then by light hope, then finally by her own internalization of it all (pushed by sw again in the last couple of eps). the horde and the first ones represent a lot of different things: imperialism, religion as ive argued, but also a vague omnipresent force that oppresses people and manipulates them into suppressing their own desires--aka, misogyny and homophobia.

ok now i can actually get into the hand holding scene! what happens in rgu is utena (basically) confesses her love for anthy, which allows her to reach down into a “coffin” where anthy had existed for centuries and attempt to save her from her pain. anthy, however, resists, and is unable to actually fully hold hands with utena--partly because she isnt quite ready yet to take her own freedom. what’s important is that utena’s love is not what saves her but instead it inspires anthy to later save herself.

connecting this all back to she-ra... remember how catra tries to convince adora to wake up and she resists at first, saying “it’s too late, i failed.” until catra confesses that she loves her, and ONLY THEN is adora finally able to take catra’s hand in hers. it’s that same theme of love inspiring adora to choose to save herself instead of just being saved by someone. thats what the hand symbolism is about.

the reason its so brilliant how utena and she-ra tackle this idea of control vs. freedom is because no one quite experiences misogyny like a woman who loves other women. removing men from the equation completely really does make wlw a target for the thousand swords of humanity’s hatred (im sorry i cant explain this metaphor right now ldlkjfdjfld). Also, in the oppression of wlw, misogyny and homophobia are inseparable from each other, which is why we feel misogyny in such a terrible visceral way compared to straight women, and why we have both a unique power to see through society’s manipulation of women as well as a unique challenge to overcome it.

ok honestly........... i dont know where i was going with that dlfkjsfls except to show how wlw narratives tend to come back to the same common themes. she-ra is just less literal about it than utena. and like. wow i could write a whole different essay on the gender dynamics in she-ra now

anyway, i love that the characters in she-ra are called princesses because its another subversion of the fairytale princess idea. adora is not some damsel in distress who needs a savior, she, as a woman, is strong enough to save herself. but what is it women even need “saving” from? loneliness? an inability to protect ourselves? or misogyny itself--systems promoted by men even as they claim to save us from them? adora needed to break free of the manipulation of the horde / first ones that told her to suppress her desires for the good of the world. she always had the power to embrace those desires... but she needed catra to help her do that, in a way that no prince/man could possibly do, because men are victims of misogyny as much as women and so few understand the power of pure, selfless love, the kind of love that can only be shared if its out from under the influence of misogyny, the kind of love that can only be shared between two women. 

overall the utena reference expands on the idea that catra didn’t save adora like a prince would save a princess, she simply loved adora in a totally selfless way that no one else could because she loved her as adora not She-Ra (just like how utena loved anthy as anthy, not as the rose bride??????) which inspired her to reclaim her agency and her desires and power and save herself by choosing to believe in catra’s love.

......... so yea thats how rgu completely transformed my experience watching this scene in 5x13 lksjdf and another reason why this visual of catra offering her hand and adora reaching for it is so powerful. 

also can we take a sec to appreciate the rainbow on catra’s hand--because that’s what adora is really reaching for right? she’s embracing her desires, her sexuality, she’s breaking through the world’s manipulation of her (represented in this moment by Prime poisoning the Heart).

Main Characters

Emmanuel José Figueroa Castillas

Manuel was SUCH an interesting character for me to develop into what he is today. He began as just a simple side character, but the more I got into his story the more he opened my eyes to so many opportunities for the plot. I found myself falling ik love with his concept, how he saw the world. To the point I had to make him a main character. Most of what my plot is today is thanks to him. I loved to explore his struggle with guilt, how loyalty to a fault can destroy a person. His arc mostly revolves around accepting he can't fix everything, that there are burdens he must let other people take. And that in the end, hes not responsible for fixing the faults of the past. He shouldnt carry the burden of mistakes that were not his to make

Personally I dont like describing personality, so I'll give you a fun fact that explains who he is as a person. His music playlist is the biggest disaster in this world. Its all old regetton songs and musical theater. You can be hearing gasolina by daddy yankee one moment and go to dancing queen from mama mia the next. He is literally banned from having the aux chord cause it leaves everyone unhappy. He isnt the best singer, but he WILL belt out the entirety of Defying gravity..........and then go "pásame la HOOKAH-.

mara (s.he-ra and the p.rincesses of p.ower affiliated oc)     an easy guide:

- daughter of catra and adora - despite having both their mamas’ genes, she didn’t inherit any of the she-ra magic, or catra’s cat-like features (which gives her some lowkey self-worth issues) - personality is more like adora’s (overthinks, feels pretty insecure at times), vibe is more like catra’s (short hair dont care, rocking some nice suits and tomboy-ish clothes) - admittedly grew up a little sheltered; despite the era of peace that followed the end of canon, there were still people who were against the princesses because of the destruction they left behind, especially when catra and adora used to be horde soldiers - mara grows up somewhat oblivious to all this, thinking it’s everyone’s living happily, so when she meets raine ( @biggergiants​ ), who’s part of a village of refugees, she really starts to open her eyes to all the consequences of the war - feels super guilty for not noticing it sooner and not doing anything to help; and after calling her moms out on never telling her the truth, she takes it upon her to help the refugees more - it’s a slow process bc she has no idea what she’s doing, and oftentimes can come off as insensitive by accident - never dabbled much in relationships, but the moment she meets raine is like ‘yup im gay, im very gay’ and falls for her so quick it’s ridiculous - not gr8 at flirting, stammers and trips over her words a lot - goes to a school near bright moon that opened up post-war; while it was open for everyone at first, they ended up having to separate the princesses and the like from the refugees, leaving them with fewer classes together and staying mostly out of each other’s way - loves all her uncles and aunts (read: the other princesses), but bow is secretly her favorite; she spent a lot ot of time with him as a kid, watching in awe as he worked on his tech - he even made her a toy bow and arrow, which she still keeps to this day; she’s also become quite good at using an actual bow and arrow, and fares okay in hand-to-hand combat - melog was her best friend as a child - a ray of sunshine, always tries to be positive about everything - super curious and always up for learning new things - like one time she walked in on the royal cook baking a cake and asked her to teach her; which means her cooking range goes from plain toast to a beautiful intricate cake, and everything in between is a shot in the dark, take it at your own risk - major astrophile; looooooves stargazing and knows all the stars and constellations’ names - note: mara is a product of my ship with @biggergiants​, meaning i won’t be writing her with other catras or adoras; other canon muses (and non-spop muses ofc!) are free game tho. also mara is singleship with raine, so all interactions with her wiill be platonic

what Adora gets from Glimmer is support, comfort, hope, security

what Glimmer gets from Adora is- The feeling of finally being on even footing with someone for once. Finding a patient/careful side to herself she maybe never knew she had, a part of herself she can trust completely and be proud of. And the- idk, relief???- of seeing someone dealing with a lot of the same pressures and fears as her, but being able to give help this time instead of just needing it  

they’re on even footing because they both know the other isn’t perfect and can be wrong, can make really big mistakes (eps 1&2) no matter how well they meant.  

and they’re both rash af compared to Bow. Adora never tells Glimmer to slow down or says hey maybe this isn’t sucha good idea, bc often Adora herself is the one who came up with said Probably Bad Idea in the first place (re: trying to heal someone with an unreliable magic sword that could just vaporize them instead). Glimmer can relax with her, she’s not left feeling like a scewup like she is when Bow, or worse, her mom worries about her

those worries feel like doubt, a vote of no confidence chipping away at Glimmer’s already dangerously low self confidence

none of that is a thing with Adora

with Bow formerly as her only friend, im pretty sure being free of that is something Glimmer’s NEVER had before, someone she’s equal to

part of that is also how much Adora’s stresses and fears mirrors Glimmer’s. A She-Ra who has no idea how to She-Ra and the (in Glimmer’s opinion, which, as Bow has pointed out, is WRONG) weak and disappointing daughter of the immortal queen of the rebellion. The fate of the rebellion rests a lot on their shoulders. They’re both terrified of making mistakes. Neither of them feel good enough but have to try

they’re both also people who have family they never knew / a dad who died, and were left with a parental figure that was either unintentionally undermining their sense of self worth, or was, y’know, literally brainwashing and manipulating them

which means when Adora gets scared or unsure or freaks out, Glimmer can get why, knows what that’s like, and tries to be as steady and reassuring for her as she can

she’s makes an effort to be with Adora like Bow is with her, except Bow (if word of god is true about the Two Dads) doesn’t share the same kinds of parents c*rap Adora and Glimmer have, and isn’t She-Ra or Angellas daughter

whether or not he’s compassionate enough to imagine what they’re going through, just that fact is probably enough to make Glimmer feel like Bow’s sympathy is, not hollow but, there’s this tinge of ‘you have no idea what this is really like’ that isn’t there with Adora. Adora knows. Adora’s dealing with it too. And Glimmer can help

she can HELP! Between her mom constantly scolding her for being reckless, Bow trying to make sure she doesn’t get herself killed, and her aunt going overboard on the affection to the point where it’s embarrassing and makes Glimmer feel like she’d being treated like a little kid- She’s never been in the the position of being the one who can worry, explain things, give some very needed comfort. She’s never felt she had something to offer other than what she can do in fighting the Horde

but she helps Adora by being soft. By just being Glimmer, not a princess or a commander, and the Glimmer who is neither a princess or a commander isn’t someone Glimmer’s thought of before, I’m thinking

So who is Glimmer when she’s not fighting the Horde or trying to prove herself to her mom? 

these days she’s the girl who Adora trusts completely. She’s the girl who can make Adora relax and calm down with a touch and a few words

“Glimmer-?”

“Right here, Adora.”

She’s the one Shadow Weaver impersonated in Mystacor to break Adora and her name was the one Adora called out after waking up from a nightmare. And again, just a touch, just a few words, and all Adora very real and fresh fear was washed away again

She, Glimmer with nothing else attached to her in those moments, is someone who can get things right for once

When she’s with Adora, when she sees Adora enjoying herself despite everything she has and is living through- Glimmer can look at Adora’s smile and feel good. Confident and certain that she is at least not making a mistake here. Because to Glimmer there is no question that Adora deserves to be happy, and there is no question that Glimmer is helping her slowly figure out how to be

maybe that’s why one of reasons why she said what she did after Shadow Weaver nearly wiped all that from Adora’s memory

not “Do you remember Sh-Ra” 

even though that’s what SW specifically threatened to erase, even though She-Ra is the rallying point they’re all counting on to turn the tide against the Horde

not “Can you remember the Rebellion” or “Do you know who you are” even though narrativily those could both have led to some very satisfyingly impactful answers- 

(imagine Adora answering with ‘I’m Adora, of the Rebellion’ or ‘She-Ra’, finally cementing her new life right after SH tried to strip it away) (imagine Adora answering back ‘Force Captain Adora’ and Glimmer’s look of horror before Adora slowly amends ‘wait.. no...’ as she remembers)

Glimmer could have even said “Do you remember me?” and that would have make perfect sense for the moment!

but she doesn’t say any of that

Glimmer unties Adora and, in a small and fragile voice, she asks

“Do you know who I am..?”

because there is a part of Glimmer that Adora brings out. There are sides to her that she feels only Adora really shares

there is a version of her that she’s discovered since becoming friends with Adora, a version of her herself that she feels proud of and confident in, someone who is not a failure

and she was scared

Adora did know who Glimmer was. she knew her in ways no one else did

but what if she didn’t anymore?

and what if her losing everything Glimmer had tried to help her find, safety, freedom, fun- What if the reason Adora lost it all and was stuck back in the dark because she gave herself up for Glimmer

because Glimmer screwed up. Got distracted. Rushed in. Got captured. The one thing she thought she could do right, help Adora, protect her, save her, she ended up ruining anyway. Mystacor all over again except the Glimmer who’d been key to Shadow Weaver getting her hands on Adora hadn’t been a fake this time 

Adora had been hurt. Because of her

and watching while it happened maybe Glimmer wondered if the person she thought she could be for Adora... was never actually real 

But. She. IS

she DID save Adora. She couldn’t break free when her magic was fresh and SW was taunting her about her mom getting ready to surrender, the end of the Rebellion just hours away- Glimmer tried to break free then and she COULDN’T

but when Adrora came for her later, found her tired out from struggling, maybe unconscious seeing how her doesn’t answer Adora’s first panicked yells. When she was worn down and had tried and tried to break free without anything but pain to show for it. When she should have been even weaker than she had been before-

it didn’t matter

being there for Adora is part of Glimmer now. A very IMPORTANT and STRONG part of her. So when Adora needed her most...

she was there

She got there in time

and that’s what Adora’s answer really meant to her 

“Adora! Are you okay?”

“...Do you know who I am?”

“....Glimmer.”

it wasn’t just yes i remember you. Adora saying her name and smiling as she did was proof that everything that had come before had been Real, Glimmer hadn’t been fooling herself

THIS is who she really is
