I think I already did a Kanej asks where I said Inej is the more jealous type in their relationship.
And its openly expressed in this one tiny moment in Chapter 4, where she's kinda jealous that Kaz chose Pim instead of her..😆
(babe don't worry he didn't pick you cuz he's gonna invite you on a heist triple date 😆)
Tumblr media
the other thing we don't talk enough about is:
So eager to be the queen of thieves, Inej?
Indirectly but clearly Inej implies that in her eyes Kaz is already the “King” and she very much wants to be his “Queen” 😉

i’m going to address tonej because it’s been really bothering me ever since i saw people first shipping them together and this post set me over the edge. yes, everyone is allowed to ship who they want and this is my opinion. the fact that someone who is involved in the show, can so willing disregard inej’s touch aversion and her trauma, when the show hardly addresses inej’s trauma, doesn’t sit right with me. her “skin to skin” joke is not funny, like what the fuck? the fact that people can so willingly disregard her trauma as well as kaz trying to be open and willing to try and change himself so that he can be with inej? jesus christ, and the fact that both freddy and amita have poured so much fucking time into giving the fans an incredible kanej while both respecting their backstories and their trauma, and people just disregard two seasons of their fucking incredible chemistry for a couple of glances with toyla? fuck no. freddy and amita care so much about their characters and have spent hours discussing the books as well as giving us believable performances about two people who are deeply traumatized but want to be together

Like Calls to Like Kanej Scene
I'm only like, halfway through Shadow & Bone season 2 right now. I'll post a full review when I'm done, but since I'm traveling this week it might be a bit until then. My thoughts thus far can be summed up with the same thoughts as season 1: crows: yay; the rest: are you okay.
Anyways, I wanted to post some of what I've been noting so far, because I loved the Kaz-Inej scene in episode 3, "Like Calls to Like."
Tumblr media
It is honestly one of my favorite romantic symbolism scenes of all time, and was pretty expertly directed.
(It is also one of my favorite "metaphorical sex" scenes of all time. Disclaimer: Metaphorical sex is not saying the characters are literally having sex; it's a narrative technique to show intimacy between characters, to show maturation, and to show characters arriving at a new stage in a relationship. I realize that given Kaz and Inej's particular hangups around physical intimacy, some people really might not want to read this analysis, so I'll post a warning before discussing the actual sex metaphor. First I'll talk symbolism that isn't sexual, so stop reading after that part if you don't wanna read that.)
Tumblr media
The scene frames Inej in light, Kaz in shadows. But it's clearly not a one-sided, Girl Fix Boy situation. Kaz stands in front of an open door, while Inej looks away from it. Kaz of course bought Inej's freedom, and through him she might find even more freedom from her demons and trauma. Inej doesn't offer "goodness" to Kaz so much as a light to guide himself; her morals and her faith don't preach to him, don't expose him, but give him a light to move forward through his trauma.
It's way more genuine than the Darkling/Alina and Mal/Alina--
Inej strips physically (at least somewhat), while Kaz strips emotionally (at least somewhat) As soon as Inej starts removing her bandage, Kaz finally tells her what the origin of his grudge with Pekka Rollins is. Instead of lecturing him, Inej supports him and validates his emotional pain: "then, we'll destroy him." Kaz then validates Inej's physical pain, by approaching and trying to help with the bandage even though he hates touching others.
Tumblr media
Now the sex part.
The scene has a lot of close-ups and gasping breaths, none louder than when Kaz actually does touch Inej's wounded arm, which of course, has blood that gets on Kaz's glove/fingertip. Blood in such scenes relates to, well, imagery of losing virginity. Again, this is all metaphorical.
Tumblr media
And then Nina interrupts them and it's awkward for everyone.
Tumblr media
Especially since Kanej very possibly won't have an actual sex scene on screen, this kind of scene is very important for establishing growth and impact of each character on the other, and it's very well done.

April Wrap Up
Hi. Hello. It's been a good long while since I've done one of these, hasn't it? You see...what happened was...the first quarter of the year was mildly stressy depressy lemon zesty and this, my preferred method of escapism, was an option left just out of reach. It's pretty fair to say I didn't really read or write anything these past few months. But April felt rejuvenating, and I have high hopes for May.
Things I Wrote
I've written a lot of words since December; unfortunately they've all been for work and therefore very analytical and boring. I did manage to write one little thing, and since I didn't do a January wrap up post I'm going to talk about it now (the best part of this plan is no one can stop me, etcetera etcetera). I was inspired by my sweet little demon love @jaxxartbox and wrote some retaliation violence by the name of I can't wait to see you again (dramione, E, 1.9k). Somebody please yell at me to write something, anything this month.
Things I Read
I know I read some very horny rare pairs in January, and then a random oneshot or two a month since then, but other than that I have been suffering. When I have the mental fortitude I'll go back through the open tabs on my phone so I can document what I actually read in the lemon zesty months. I did manage to finally break my book hangover in April (Song of Achilles fucking obliterated me in November and I took 4 full business months to recover). And it was all because I watched a couple hours of wesper edits and decided I needed to read about the two little gay boys in love. That's right, I purchased and read Leigh Bardugo's whole grishaverse for those two dummies. Came for the two little gay boy criminals in love, stayed for everyone else (I pledge allegiance to the crows and nikolai, only. ok and zoya, too)
Fiction:
Shadow and Bone - 81,345 words
Siege and Storm - 102,805 words
Ruin and Rising - 95,265 words
Six of Crows - 131,080 words
Crooked Kingdom - 156,310 words
King of Scars - 132,000
Rule of Wolves - 148,000
Nonfiction:
Fanfiction:
Complete: (approx.
I Can Teach You, But I Have To Charge by pastaslut (flexi, E, 4.1k)
Here There Be Monsters by flirtyfabrikator (zoyalai, E, 8.3k)
Demon in Chains by thegoldenkneazle (zoyalai, E, 3.3k)
Things I'm Reading (Heading into May)
I'm actually just hoping for anything at this point. I have so much dramione to catch up on, so many friends that have written things I haven't gotten around to yet, so many WIPs I need to dive back into. And I'll be so honest, I want to sink my teeth into some kanej fanfic, just survive on tea and angst sandwiches. I have a lot of flowers to plant - I could water them with my tears.

impediments, pt. 2
After I suffered such a classically Monday Monday (I twisted my ankle walking out of contract law and an embarrassingly high number of people came to help me), I think we could all use some kanej fluff, sooo...
[This is an addendum to this fic I posted last week on AO3, so I selfishly hope you will read that one first :)]
***
It takes Inej some time to realize that Kaz’s insistence on procuring a primary residence to list on their forthcoming marriage contract was really just an excuse to justify buying her a house.
The first time he mentions this residency stipulation, her immediate response is that he can just list the Slat, since he (soon, both of us, her mind supplies) owns the entire building. The resultant scowl that darkens Kaz’s face–quite reminiscent of the face he wore during much of their shared youth–puts an immediate and decisive end to that thought.
How silly of me, she thinks sardonically, to imagine that we would list the place where we literally share a bed and spend most of our time when I’m on land. Truly preposterous of you, Inej.
But she knows, too, that the look on his face means his obsessive mind will see this matter to its conclusion, no matter how Inej might try to distract him–and she is quite uninterested in trying to distract a determined Kaz unless it’s to her own benefit, thank you very much. All she can do now is collateral damage management while he adds “spontaneous real estate dealings” to their growing prenuptial to-do list.
As if intuitively sensing the opportunity to exacerbate Kaz’s current state of stress, Jesper suddenly flings open the door to Kaz’s current–Haskell’s former–office, stepping through and kicking it closed behind him with a flourish of his fluorescent green coat.
“How goes the matrimonial paper-pushing, dearest lovebirds?”
Even if Kaz stubbornly refuses to look up from the papers on his desk, just the sound of Jesper’s shit-eating grin is enough to deepen his glower to Shadow Fold-darkness.
Inej knows that Kaz doesn’t regret telling Jesper about their imminent civil union–in fact, Kaz was the one who suggested they tell Jesper first. It’s just that he regrets it at this moment.
Overall, Kaz has softened significantly toward Jesper in the past few years. It’s easier for Kaz, now that he’s able to talk to Inej about Jordie, to disentangle the sins of his best friend from the sins of his deceased brother. He no longer resents Jordie for what he couldn’t do: time and experience have done wonders to change the way he imagines what his brother was capable of at thirteen. And in healing that older wound, Kaz no longer blames Jesper for what he hasn’t done. In the long weeks and months that Inej has been out to sea, Kaz and Jesper have settled into the friendship that a fifteen-year-old Kaz never imagined could be possible between him and Jesper, despite how charming and vivacious the sharpshooter was from the first.
Indeed, if Kaz were really pressed to do it, he would name Jesper Fahey as his oldest, closest friend (barring Inej, of course). But with no amount of pressing at all, Kaz is currently itching to shoot his oldest, closest friend in the foot.
As Jesper waltzes further into the room, Inej, perched on the corner of the desk as usual, glances alarmedly between him and Kaz. But Jesper is just as accustomed to Kaz’s foul moods–or his staging of them–as she is, so he waves her off, metaphorically, with a good-natured wink, settling his long limbs into the wooden chair before them.
“Kaz has decided that the logical next phase of our marriage proceedings requires buying a house,” Inej opens, because she can’t help but engage in a little bit of teasing with Jesper there to spur her on.
“Oh has he? Now tell me, my dearest dread pirate, is this a matter of Actual Logic, or Kaz Logic?” There’s an extra twinkle in Jesper’s gray eyes as they meet hers.
Lately, Jesper and Inej have amused themselves by dividing Kaz’s reasoning between Actual Logic and Kaz Logic–the latter term only granted to the more convoluted justifications for his behavior. (His decision to invest in Wylan’s recent educational reform venture to increase accommodations for school children across the city? Actual Logic, given the many ways he expects a beneficial return on investment. His subsequent decision to threaten the schoolteachers of numerous noncompliant Councilmembers’ children to pressure them into endorsing the venture? Complete Kaz Logic, for which Kaz received quite an impressive chewing out from the once-meek Wylan Van Eck.)
“It’s not clear to me yet,” replies Inej, nudging Kaz’s elbow teasingly with her slippered toe. He spares her a half-second’s glance–and could that be a hint of a smirk?–before returning to his paper-pushing.
It’s only after Jesper has completed a minutes-long tirade about he and Wylan’s neighbors on Geldstraat (“Who would think to plant poisonous berry bushes that look just like blueberries along the street where any child would eat them?” Jesper moans. “Does ‘any child’ happen to include one adult Zemeni man?” Kaz deadpans.) and further grilled Inej about the details of her next expedition on the Wraith (“It depends on how quickly we can get this citizenship matter wrapped up,” she sighs. Kaz again: “The other half of your ‘citizenship matter’ is excited to marry you too.”) that Kaz finally clears his throat and deigns to let them in on the secret.
“The next phase of our marriage proceedings does not require purchasing a house.”
Jesper drops the pen he was deconstructing in the air–a detailed bit of Fabrikating–to gaze at Kaz with interest. Inej stops spinning her knife, waiting for his grand reveal. Her hopeless magician.
Kaz pulls out one sheet of paper from the stack and passes it to Inej, who swiftly notes some wording about the deed to a house.
“I already purchased one.”
Inej immediately looks to him in shock, and despite his unaffected tone, she recognizes something of his characteristic softness–well, characteristic only when it comes to his dealings with her–in the way his eyes meet hers, steady, gentle, and kind. You could always see me, she thinks.
It occurs to her to glance at the date at the top of the paper in her hands, validating his (soon, their) ownership of a property she has often admired off Zelverstraat: vine-covered walls that bloom in late spring, a cheery red door, and tall windows on the second floor where one might catch a glimpse out to Fourth Harbor. Not to her surprise, but to aid the familiar warmth growing within her chest, she notes that it’s a few months old. One more magic trick, one more impossibly-generous gift.
She meets his eyes again and blinks to clear hers of water. This is too much, she thinks, her lower lip threatening to tremble.
He glances down swiftly to the gold ring on her finger–a Suli design she’d picked out for herself–as though to say, Not for you it isn’t.
Jesper, who was unusually quiet as they completed their silent conversation, dons the shit-eating grin once more as Kaz and Inej finally think to glance back at him. “This isn’t Kaz logic at all,” he starts, recapturing their attention.
“What is it, then?” Inej chuckles wetly, hand reaching out to interlock her fingers with Kaz’s on top of the desk. (Everything’s so much easier now–for both of them, but especially for him. But Jesper can’t spend long reflecting on it now, lest he get too choked up to make proper fun of his best friend.)
“This is Inej Logic–it’s how he makes his best decisions. Like sticking around you all these years. Even if he does look like a kicked puppy for the weeks you’re out to sea.”
If Kaz looks just a bit put out by this statement, it’s quickly smothered by the adoration that crosses his face when Inej tosses her braided head back and laughs freely.
That’s the look, Jesper thinks.
It’s a look that makes him think Kaz does know something of magic, more than counting cards or sleight of hand. In front of him is the proof.

bottled up - a Kanej oneshot
Tumblr media
This was written for @wornpagelibrary's year end event! Happy holidays, Arianna (@arimo93)! I hope you enjoy this little Kanej fluff <3
Fandom: Six of Crows / Grishaverse
Pairing: Kaz Brekker x Inej Ghafa
Rating: general -> Post-canon, spoiler-free for the Nikolai duology
Word count: 1265
While greed bows to Kaz Brekker, envy is a constant companion. It’s an old friend, one who has seen his cards and understands why Kaz keeps them close to his chest. It walks alongside him as he hobbles his way down the street, a few paces behind where Jesper and Inej skip along happily.

While greed bows to Kaz Brekker, envy is a constant companion. It’s an old friend, one who has seen his cards and understands why Kaz keeps them close to his chest. It walks alongside him as he hobbles his way down the street, a few paces behind where Jesper and Inej skip along happily. He does not usually let himself be seen in public near them anymore, lest his reputation tarnish theirs; Jesper, the merchant’s husband, and Inej, the slave-freeing pirate. Both fairly reputable people, compared to the crime boss that he is. Fortunately, the citizens of Ketterdam turn a blind eye to him, as though they see the blood tainting the three-legged tracks he leaves in the snow and dare not acknowledge his presence.
Kaz wishes so deeply that he could be in Jesper’s place right now, a thought he has had very few times since meeting the sharpshooter. Window shopping is definitely not his thing, but seeing Inej light up at the bright displays would be worth the tediousness of it all. More than that, he wishes he could be the one walking arm-in-arm with Inej, huddling close to keep her warm amidst the snowfall.
Their relationship is in a better place than it has ever been, but distance makes healing slow. Thankfully, the heart is a muscle, and Kaz has trained his not to get in the way of his professional goals.
“We don’t celebrate Saints’ days,” Jesper says as they stop in front of a store, “but I want to get Wylan something.”
“To bribe him for putting up with you?” Inej replies.
Jesper laughs. “Pretty much.”
As the pair lingers in front of the illuminated window, Kaz catches up to them. It’s the shop of a local artisan, a metalworker by the look of things. Copper cogs and exposed clockwork machinery, necklaces and other accessories made of twisted metal. Kaz has no idea what Wylan could possibly want from here. Yet Jesper goes in, dragging Inej along with him.
Kaz loiters outside, watching the snow fall gently and settle into cracks in the road. For Kaz, winter is a hurdle he has to overcome every year. Soon enough, the snow will melt and freeze again into a thin sheet of ice, making it much harder for him to walk around with his cane. In Inej’s religion, winter brings about the Feast of Sankt Nikolai, a holiday where people feast on large amounts of food. For Inej, winter means anchoring her boat in Ketterdam to buy food to redistribute to those in need. She slows down on busting slave rings during the colder months. Instead, she stops in each nation and donates food to their homeless and poor populations, starting here in Ketterdam. Soon after, she raises anchor to sail west to Novyi Zem and the southern colonies before sailing east again to Shu Han, Fjerda and Ravka.
This leaves Kaz and Inej with very little time to spend together while she is in Ketterdam, but they make the best out of it. Inej slips into his quarters at night so they can catch up on each other’s lives and maybe, maybe, continue to work on healing.
Kaz turns to face the shop. Inside, Jesper is haggling with the vendor, wildly gesticulating. Even when browsing the wares of a shop, Inej melts into the shadows. It’s as if she can’t help it, like stealth is the very essence of her being. But Kaz sees her, he always has. He sees her fingering the long chain of a necklace, admiring the craftsmanship of the bobble hanging from it. She smiles to herself as she turns the necklace between her fingers and Kaz feels it seeping into his chest, warming him up from the inside.
Kaz’s eyes stay locked on Inej’s hands, waiting for her to use Jesper’s distraction to make the necklace disappear. Even when Jesper puts an arm around her, done with his purchase, Kaz is still staring. He watches as her nimble fingers let go of the necklace, the chain swinging on its hook.
Sneaking into slave owners’ homes to steal ownership papers, forge ledgers or, when all else fails, threaten them until they free their slaves–Inej has not left her life of crime behind, but stealing from an artisan trying to make a living violates her code.
And of course Inej doesn’t buy anything for herself, she saves her money for charitable endeavors.
Kaz sighs to himself, looking up towards the gray sky. Perhaps he, too, should pay this artisan a visit.
——
When she slips through the window atop the Crow Club on her last night in Ketterdam, Inej finds Kaz pacing his room. His limp is prominent, as it usually is at night after a long day of threatening merchants and gangsters alike. Before she even makes herself known, he stops in his tracks.
“Wraith,” Kaz says, acknowledging her presence.
Inej hops down from the windowsill, into a sliver of moonlight.
“We’ll be leaving in the morning,” Inej says. “I wanted to say goodbye.”
Keeping his back to her, Kaz gives her a barely visible nod. She notices the way his fist clenches, but he remains silent. He does not invite her to stay. Despite herself, Inej sighs.
“Inej, wait.”
She freezes. Kaz turns to her then, avoiding her eyes but facing her nonetheless. His lips thin.
“I have something for you,” he says.
Inej stares in disbelief as Kaz staggers to his large desk. His keys jangle as he picks out the one that unlocks the largest drawer. He takes out a bundle the size of a newborn, wrapped in sturdy paper.
Their eyes meet as he thrusts the bundle towards her. In Kaz’s dark eyes, Inej reads something she rarely sees in him—doubt. Not quite fear, but close.
He’s afraid I won’t like it, she realizes.
She takes it from him. She unwraps the bundle gently—it’s heavier than she expected, and wrapped in quite a few layers of paper. The paper falls off to uncover a large glass bottle and—
“Kaz,” Inej gasps, “this is amazing,”
Inside the bottle is a replica of The Wraith, her ship. It’s assembled out of thin sheets of metal, every plank of the deck carved with precision. At its bow, a small figure with black hair gazes forward. Inej is too captivated by the gift to notice the slight upward tilt of Kaz’s lips, or the way his cheeks redden slightly as he watches her.
When she finally looks up and smiles at him, Kaz cannot help but smile back.
“Thank you,” she says.
Instinctively, her hand reaches out to him, but she stops herself. If it were Nina, or Jesper, or even Wylan, she would have gone for a hug. But it’s Kaz, and so she holds back. To her surprise, though, Kaz lifts his own hand, offering it to her.
His hand is bare of everything but calluses and a few small scars.
She reaches for it, brushing her fingers softly over his. Kaz shudders, but he does not pull away. He actually reaches for her, too, his thumb stroking over her fingers.
“Come back soon,” he murmurs.
“As soon as I am able,” she replies.
Kaz gives her hand a brief squeeze before letting go. Inej hops back on the windowsill, looking out towards the city beyond. She looks back to Kaz and their eyes meet. They give each other a small nod.
As she disappears into the night, Inej hears Kaz’s parting words, whispered to the empty room.
“See you soon, my Wraith.”

fanfic writer ask meme: ADERT?
A: Of the fanfic you’ve written, which is your favorite and why?
hmm maybe All Tied Up?
my favourite thing in the world to write is smut that makes your teeth ache and i think all tied up is the most tooth-rotting of any of my smut so far. at the same time, i think i did a good job of addressing the issues around sexuality, kink, gender, relationship dynamics, and trauma recovery that inevitably arise in sexually explicit fics involving inej (as well as kaz and jes to lesser degrees).
also i quite like the prose? Lopsided and a little loopy, she grins at Jesper, high on a mountainside of endorphins. i had so much fun writing it, which is really all i can ask for.
D: What’s the most personal fanfic you’ve written?
it's a close tie between Under a Merciless White Light and Not a Who but a What, for different reasons. those reasons probably meet in my kanej kid!fic Multitudes but that one feels slightly less personal for reasons that are hard to articulate.
under a merciless white light is personal for it's content but also because it came about as a response to the lack of explicit race-related discourse in the soc fandom. i had all these thoughts/feelings about racialisation and fetishisation and how these characters would experience race if their world were a little more like ours but i wasn't sure if there was space/demand for that kind of fic. after a lengthy and hugely encouraging discussion about it with botb folks it became clear people would read this kind of fic. since i posted i've had a lot of comments from people telling me they recognised themselves in it and so i know it was worth it.
not a who but a what is almost autobiographical to be honest. i have never experienced trauma like inej has but have been overtly sexualised since i was a child (as is true of many afab folks and black afab folks in particular) and growing older i've come to realise this has affected the way i perceive and experience my sex/gender. writing it, which i did while writing all tied up as a way of processing some of the anxieties coming up for inej in that, was very cathartic and rewarding.
(i realise now this question didn't ask for why the fic is personal but hey ho).
E: What character do you identify with most?  Is there a certain fic of yours that captures these qualities particularly well?
inej. without a doubt, inej. a close second would be jesper purely for his people pleaser personality and his biracial background but inej was the character i was most strongly and most immediately drawn to. her fierce sense of justice/ethics, her sense of loyalty which doesn't equate to uncritical support, her unerring and unyielding hope, not to mention her experiences surrounding gender, sexuality and migration. inej is funny and brilliant and lovely and everything i aspire to be.
inej ghafa has my whole heart and if that is not clear from my writing then i am doing something very wrong. i think the fic that captures my love of inej ghafa most is probably Good Investments. though, like i said, it's there in pretty much everything i have ever written for this fandom.
R: Which writers (fanfic or otherwise) do you consider the biggest influence on you and your writing?
this is a good and difficult question. let me break it down:
my prose style is strongly inspired by writers like n.k. jemisin. she writes evocatively without being overwrought or pretentious, which is really my main goal. in general, her prose is incredibly sensual and fleshy, in the body. among fic writers i think of @wylanvanfeck and @desidarling123 when conjuring that sensuous prose that really puts you into the scene.
my narrative style, if i can be said to have such, is inspired by writers like ursula le guin. (i'm really flattering myself with these comparisons lol). she wrote a whole essay on how stories are like carrier bags and i wrote a blog post about that essay because i love it so much but the tl;dr of it is that stories hold things (characters, feelings, ideas, plotty elements) together, they transfer these things from one person to another, or from multiple people to multiple people and that it's an essentially modern and masculine (though i would clarify, a toxic variety of masculine) assumption that stories must go from point a to point b to point c and end up at z, that stories must be arrows or spears, with direction and purpose. my stories are carrier bags for feelings otherwise unarticulated, otherwise unarticulatable? they aren't plotty but... that's the point.
finally, the writers that influence me most on a day-to-day level, with little bits of inspiration and encouragement are legion but to name a few @anonniemousefics @doorsclosingslowly @randomcat1832 @whatanybodygets @genuineformality and @gedankenvoll <3
T: Any fanfic tropes you can’t stand?
oof well, it's hard to say if there's anything i "can't stand" but if the question were "don't read", i would say most kinds of crossovers and i'm also not usually a fan of au's (apart from modern). mostly, this is because i read fic for the world and the characters as they were presented to me in the original text. stuff that strays too far from that tends to lose me if not still thoroughly grounded in the canon in some way. notable exceptions to this self-imposed rule are nonnie's robin hood au, @linearla's union au and really any of lottie's aus which i have so far enjoyed tremendously against my better judgement/j. it's not a hard and fast rule and mostly, i find fic through recommendations and just by reading stuff by writers i admire.
i guess it's more about the execution than anything but crossover and au tags tend to put me off even opening a fic.
[if it's not clear, this is a judgement free zone. just my personal preference].
~
this was fun, if you can't tell by the length of these answers.
send me a letter and see if you too can be burdened with an overly lengthy ask response!

Mr.Crow
This is a sad-ish Kanej as parents oneshot with a happy ending! I’ve been tinkering with this idea for a while now!
Thank y’all for the support to get me here! Here’s my hundredth Instagram post, I hope y’all love it <3
“____” indicates time passing!
Jordie laughs, and Inej marvels at the sound, so light and carefree, she wishes she could keep it in a jar to listen to when the nights feel all too dark. The laughs echo through the small home, it’s still too large for just the two of them.
He’s only six months old and she can’t help but be amazed at how much he’s already grown. It fills her heart with warmth, for a moment she forgets the hole within her heart.
Jordie’s holding a toy, one of his favorites, a stuffed crow Kaz had gotten him when he was born. Mr.Crow, he’s called it, it feels so long ago, yet almost as if it were yesterday. The knife of grief plunges deep into her heart.
He has warm gold skin, closer to her own bronze, but his brown eyes are a shade of bitter tea dissimilar to Inej. He has Kaz’s eyes, it’s unmistakeable.
She watches him as he holds up the crow, babbling to it, and toward the empty chair beside him. He hasn't said his first word yet, she knows it's far too early for that, but his babblings are happy, and occasionally peppered with laughter. That's enough for Inej.
____
It's been a long day, the longest in a while. Just as Inej flops into bed, Jordie cries, and she's forced up. She sighs, pushing herself from the comfort of the mattress, she's so tired. Please, just go to sleep. He's been getting fussier ever since he began teething, and the dark circles beneath her eyes are more than enough proof.
She walks out of her room, and into the one beside it. Like a switch being flipped, the wailing subsides, turning into playful giggles as he clutches Mr.Crow. But Jordie hasn't even seen her yet. No, he's focused on his crow toy and the other side of the seemingly empty room.
Perhaps Inej would be worried, perhaps she would feel uneasy, but she's far too tired, and far too relieved he's worked it out on his own.
____
Letters have come in, from Wylan and Jesper, letters that have been left unanswered for weeks now. Inej has been busy, and there are many other thoughts that claim a higher importance for her than letters.
Over the past month Jordie has become more and more fascinated by the chair, Kaz's chair. And perhaps she'd notice, if there weren't so much to do, if it weren't something seemingly normal for a baby, if she weren't so damn tired. But sometimes nightmares haunt you more than the real thing, and she doesn't sleep much. When she does, it is not restful.
____
She misses him, and apparently she ponders on it for a moment too long, because Jordie begins to cry in her arms. She often loses herself in a universe of pain now, she’s thankful to always be brought back by the child in her arms.
"Well how about Mr.Crow and you play for a minute while Mama does some dishes, alright?" She asks, remembering he's only a baby, one which understands exactly three of those words. She shakes her head at herself as she sets him in his crib, placing the plush crow in his tiny hands. She really needs to get some sleep.
Thank the Saints for Mr.Crow.
____
8 letters and 7 weeks, she’s felt bad, truly, but only tonight is it finally enough to open them, and to respond, or try to at least. She placed Jordie in his crib with Mr.Crow a few minutes before, and now she has the freedom to sit down, to take a moment to herself.
A silent argument within her is battled out before she finally picks one up, the oldest. It says what she thought it would say, how they miss her, and Jordie, and they should visit, but they don't mention him and she sets the letter down. Disappointment and relief fight for a place within her.
She finally brings herself to pen her response, hours later, once she's read and reread all of the letters. But Inej is busy, and it sits on the counter for two weeks, still unsent.
_____
Three weeks, another letter, she feels bad, she really does, but she's exhausted. Her two saviors? Coffee and Mr.Crow.
It’s early in the morning when she gets a free moment to spare, she reads the letter quickly while Jordie is occupied. They miss her, and they forgive her for not replying, they're so glad she finally responded and are excited to see her next month.
What? She is not that tired, she wasn’t that tired. She never mailed her letter, and it never said anything about a visit. What is going on? Inej feels as though she's going mad, even so, that feeling ins't too uncommon these days. Grief is the worst kind of monster.
Jordie screams, startling Inej from her thoughts. Oh no. She runs out of the room, and to him. When she arrives, mere moments later, he's holding out Mr.Crow, and babbling toward the chair, happy babbling. It was a happy scream, thank the Saints.
"Jordie, who are you talking to?" She says with a laugh, shaking her head and walking over to scoop him up. He’s given her a real fright with that scream.
He looks at her, giggling, "Da!" He exclaims, clapping his hands together. Inej’s souls feels as though it’s being torn apart all over again, yet sewn right back up at once.
The curtain from the open window behind Jordie flutters a bit, a warm air surrounds her, it’s a soft comfort, like the softest hug. A hug so close to what Kaz used to give. A single tear slips from her eye, because she knows.
He is here with them, he never left her, he never left Jordie.

Hey 👋, I see your taking Kanej fic requests so I was wondering (if you can of course) write one where some creep causes Inej to vanish in the the Crow Club, and she’s trying to fight the memories and the past or somethin’ like that? Thank you so much 😊!
Hey there, I'm so sorry this is so pathetically late- but I tried :) hope you enjoy!
,,,,
Inej had not been to Ketterdam in eight months. Eight months since Kaz Brekker held her hand without gloves, eight months since she knew they may have a future together- a future where she was more than just the Queen of the seas and he was more than just the King of the barrel.
While setting out to save children who would have, possibly suffered the same fate as her, what Inej had not anticipated was- memories. The first time she had ever been on a ship was when she was fourteen, snatched from her parents and shoved into an abyss of unknown darkness.
Captain Ghafa was, of course, still more than capable of taking care of herself. She had, therefore not taken care to send out word that she would be docking in the Ketterdam harbor at night. By the time she was done with her duties with getting the children who came to Ketterdam transport to a safe place and unloading the ship, the moon was high and it was late.
Inej wasn’t concerned about how late it was. The city was still the same under the sole of her feet- even after eight months at sea. She entered the Slat through the front door.
“Wraith!”
“Keep your voice down, Pim.”
“You want me to tell the boss you’re here?”
That. Now that she had not considered. She took two moments to think,
“Yes.”
He looked like a boy getting toffee as he left his post at the door.
Inej walked into the Crow Club, still buzzing with pigeons and unlucky folks who had come to try their luck at Three Men Bramble. The air was thick with the smell of kvas and sweat.
Isn’t this a bit too crowded? Inej thought. But then maybe it was her long months at sea which had destroyed her habit. She walked in. The noise was a collective chatter, some men loud sometimes.
She had no thought about what Kaz would say, or do. Was he the same? Did he change? Did he work on his layers or did he build the walls back up again?
It was not usual for the wraith, or even Inej Ghafa to lose vision of her surroundings even when she was thinking- but this time, she had. And she managed to stop right in front of a big man. A man she recognized. From her past.
“The Suli Lynx, is it? C’mere little lynx”
She wasn’t the lynx anymore, she had come a long way since then. Hadn’t she? The silks were no more on her, it was her fighting gear. But the smell- it was the same smell she used to get from him back then. It was engraved in her memory.
Inej reached for her knives, but even they felt too heavy. She found herself wishing she could disappear into the shadows- so she did the next best thing.
The world started to fade from her view, her breathing came shallow, and she found herself hoping the man did not notice the change. Just like it used to be, back in the menagerie.
Suddenly that smell was gone. There was a loud groan somewhere and the air filled with the smell of cigars.
“Inej.”
Her name, Inej Ghafa, Captain Ghafa, The Wraith. Not the little lynx.
“Inej, look at me.”
Look. Open eyes.
“Open your damn eyes, Inej”
The voice had a rasp. It was familiar. She tried to get her breathing under control, and slowly opened her eyes- only to meet the bitter brown pupils of Kaz Brekker.
“To my room”
And he walked away. He had held her wrist with his gloved hands and now he was walking away. Inej began to wish she’d never come back.
She stood there for a moment, the crowd that had gathered being dispersed by Pim and Anika. His boot disappeared behind the door. She started up the stairs.
---
Hesitating before the door for a moment, she pushed it open. She expected Kaz to have his gloves on, back turned and berating her for not being useful for herself with her knives.
He did stand with his back turned and hands clasped behind, but he did not have gloves on. As soon as Inej clicked the door closed, he relaxed,
“Inej.”
“Kaz”
“You’re back.”
Inej swallowed a lump, “yes”
Unprecedented, he turned, and opened his arms in a low arc, welcoming her for a hug.
Inej was beyond surprised. She stood there for two moments- and then before she knew what she was doing, she was striding across the room and into him.
His arms wrapped around her waist and tightened as she clutched the fabric near his heart.
“Who was that?”
“Someone-” Inej choked, “someone who made me disappear everyday.”
“Do you want me to move away?”
His voice was soft, his smell was familiar and his heartbeat-
“No.” she said, swallowing, “no, Kaz. I want to be home.”
He said nothing, but she felt the briefest brush of his lips against her temple and the slightest tightening of his arms around her.

So since y’all seemed to like Kanej kid, let’s do Zoyalai kid. Also David isn’t dead in this because it is to sad
||ROW SPOILERS||
TW, this has brief mentions of infertility and describes labor, nothing to graphic just talks about how painful it is
After the wedding zoya and Nikolai were both excited to start a family
Nikolai; while he adores his sister Linnea and his father, never really was able to grow up in a loving household
He never wanted that for his children
He and Vasily had a horrible relationship growing up and he wanted to di everything in his power to make sure his kids had a healthy sibling relationship
Zoya on the other hand never really thought she’d have kids
Before everything went down she kinda assumed she’d work as a general and work to help Grisha
She never thought she’d have children
That obviously had to change
The country needed heirs
Zoya already decided that since she was probably gonna live a loooooong time, when her heir came of age she would step down; that way she wouldn’t love for a super long time.
Now that Zoya was gonna have children she wasn’t honestly sure about
What if they hold her back?
What if she gives up to many duties for them?
But higher the all these other worries she didn’t want to turn into her own mother
No matter how much Nikolai assured her that never will happen
Zoya still had worries
Zoya was a lot of things but motherly she was not
Nevertheless in February Zoya and Nikolai told there friends they were expecting
They were all incredibly happy for them
Tamar loved children although she herself didn’t want any and couldn’t wait to teach the kid things like how to ride a horse or shoot
Tolya objected saying the kid should be well educated on poatry and great works that way the Nazyalensky dynasty might be somewhat pious
Genya was hoping for a girl. Genya and David had there son Forrest earlier that year and Genya was already planning play dates
David was happy for his friends and had already started on projects for toys for the kid
When they wrote Mal and Alina they were ecstatic
While Mal gave tips on how to handle babies to Nikolai
Alina with her wiles and years of friendship with Zoya figured out all the way from Keramzin Zoya was worried
She wrote “Zoya babe imma cut to the chase, your nervous, your scared, your probably worried you’ll turn out to be a horrible mother. And imma tell you your not. Cause you’ve got an amazing freaking team. You’ve got Nikolai, Magnus, Linnea, and Genya and David, the twins, and of course myself. There’s no way in hell we’d let you turn out horrible to the kid. We’ve got you”
It helped Zoya a lot
She decided it was orphan wiles that Alina used to diagnose her exact problem from the letter she wrote to her
And Zoya did have wonderful people to help her
She wasn’t alone
Zoya had been trying to remember that more
Three months along Zoya was safely into Trmester two and it was time to tell the public
This was crucial to the monarchy
While zoya and Nikolai were popular
They needed an heir to convive people of the security of the nation
They made a public speech announcing the baby and Ravka went wild
If there’s one thing Ravkans know how to do it’s rally around babies
Letter came pouring in from name suggestions to old wives tales
They said Rosemary made the baby healthier
They said they should name there child Plumje
Well the Plumje comment was from some Kerch girl Zoya found strange but never mind that
The announcement was huge
The people had hope
Hope that wolves wouldn’t come knocking
Hope that there boys and girls wouldn’t be drafted
Hope for peace
While the people rejoiced Zoyas pregnancy was getting tougher
She had a easy enough first trimester but the second? That was rough
The morning sickness was bad
Her Healer; a no nonsense Fjerdan Women said that the vomiting wasn’t something that could be healed
And so Zoya suffered on
Zoya insisted on keeping her normal schedule
Her usual meetings with Grisha and the spy’s
Passive agressive letters to the Kerch
Aggressive aggressive letters to the shu
And trying to figure out whether or not there was a revolution group in the Wandering Isle
Zoyas schedule was already stressed and the baby wasn’t helping
Eventually her healer; Monika, put her foot down
“Your Magesty” She started “if you do not alleviate your stress I guarantee your pregnancy will be worse”
“Look Monika I can handle a little throw up”
Monika and Zoya attended the little palace together
While Monika was a healer and back then the animosity between corporalki and etherealki were high, they were friends
It was good to have a powerful healer in your corner when half the little palace hates you
And it was good to have a powerful squaller in your corner when your Fjerdan and in enemy territory
“Zoya you are endangering your child” Monika stated
By this statement Nikolai had enough
And zoya finally listened
Nikolai assumed some of her duties and Zoya started to feel a bit better
Her second trimester was stressful for there relationship
Nikolai had a hard time understanding zoya
And Zoyas fears started to grow
But they were a good couple
And they worked through tension before
Zoya opened up about her worries of being a competent queen with a child
She leaned on Nikolai more
And they worked together to fix the damage
By the end of her second trimester there relationship was healthier
And they thought the third couldn’t be as bad
In a way they were right
Her morning sickness while still present was significantly less then her second trimester
However I new thing arose
A question that everyone had been thinking
“What if the baby is Grisha?”
The Ravkans had accepted a Grisha queen
But a Grisha dynasty was another thing
Monika told them outright that the baby was probably Grisha
Being Grisha tended to run in families
And Zoya was fairly sure her paternal grandmother was also a squaller
The whole science of Grisha heritage wasn’t studied well
Most Grisha were in Ravka in the second army
And most of the soldiers don’t have children
Zoya also learned her new found ability to sense Grisha wasn’t fool proof
Sometimes she couldn’t tell at all
And in Genyas case of being somewhere between a corporalki and materialki, she couldn’t tell what she was
She also couldn’t sense anything in Forrest Kostyk
That meant they couldn’t rely on Zoyas power
Nikolai couldn’t help but think tracing heritage would be easier if he wasn’t a bastard
His mother’s line was easy
She was a Fjerdan princess so he could trace everything back from the very start
And from his mother not a drop of Grisha blood ran through his veins
His fathers got murky
Magnus didn’t come from nobility
He was self made
A self made orphan
So other then his father neither he nor Magnus knew anything about Grisha influence
Nevertheless they had other worries
Zoya was in her third trimester and was going to give birth any minute now
Zoya honestly didn’t think she would make it this far
And that has nothing to do with her fears of motherhood
Her own mother had four miscarriages
Pregnancy complications were common
Especially in Ravka where most couldn’t afford mediks
But now that the due date was fast approaching Zoya was in fact okay
Zoya can handle pain, she’s handled much worse
Labor was one of the least of her worries
The due date was October eighth
And on time and punctual Zoya went into labor during lunch
Nikolai joked it would be a good trait for a ruler to show up on time
However Zoya was in to much pain to think about a snarky retort
She had vastly underestimated how much this would hurt
The pain was blinding
But Zoya was strong enough to survive the fall
And so in 3:07 PM son October eighth
Prince Mycanae Juris Nazyalensky was born (prounounced My-kuh-nay-uh because I threw some random vowels together and made it a name)
Myca (My Kuh) for short
With a tuft of chocolate brown hair and beautiful hazel eyes he shone
Nikolai absolutely adored him
He would rock him and sing him lullabies
But mostly tell him stories
About the amazing Privateer Sturmhond
Of the allusive Juris
Of the little termite
Zoya in the other hand had a different approach to there newborn
When he first cried she was elated
Zoya didn’t hold back the tears of happiness and didn’t even swear the healers to secrecy after
Zoya was the epitome of
“Oh god it’s a baby, as I holding him wrong? Does he have the right clothes on? He’s so fragile and precious”
Monika had to tell her three times that Myca’s crib was fine for him and it wasn’t to hard
However the family’s elation was short lived
They were a family
But they were also the rulers of Ravka
And Ravka needed to see the face of there hope
Four hours after his birth Nikolai presented him before the nobility
Zoya still wasn’t feeling to great and Nikolai Insisted he could do it
This is what the Ravkans needed
The baby met stability
Met peace
For once in many years the people could lay down in there beds without fear
But to Zoya and Nikolai
There baby wasn’t a political tool
Or a savior
He was just a baby
A perfect
Small
Baby
This is what love does.
Im really proud of myself for accomplishing this. I worked really hard on it and to keep our characters in canon. My ask box is open and n do any Grishaverse asks
If this gets 25 likes I’ll do a part two 😉
I defo think Nikolai and Zoya would have more then one kid
Also I kid you not I couldn’t find any good names for the life of me so I eventually took a break and was doing my History homework when I was reading some old Greek thing and saw the word “Mycenae” and was like “Yeah I can massively mispronounce this and make it a name”
Here is part two https://dablackdahlia.tumblr.com/post/651104016423583744/the-black-dahlia
I also made a Kanej kid one here

six of crows ship x evermore
back again with assigning songs from evermore to soc ships. folklore one posted previously, read that too if you want.
kanej - cowboy like me
i’m convinced ms swift actually wrote this song for them. i don’t think explanation is even needed.
i've got some tricks up my sleeve/ takes one to know one/ you're a cowboy like me- “tricks up my sleeve” referring to kaz being a master of sleight of hand and generally a conniving mastermind, and the latter is them similarly being people made from trauma and hurt
never wanted love/ just a fancy car- love was the farthest thing from their minds; kaz wanted revenge (and money) and inej wanted a boat so she could leave this shit
you’re a cowboy like me/ perched in the dark/ telling all the rich folks anything they wanna hear- they are both “perched in the dark” in different ways; inej literally because she is THE Wraith, kaz metaphorically, hiding in the shadows, biding his time for vengeance. kaz swindles the “rich folks” by feeding them lies and double-crossing them like six thousand times.
you're a bandit like me/ eyes full of stars/ hustling for the good life/ never thought I'd meet you here- they’re both bandits and thieves and criminals, and kaz definitely has thought about inej’s eyes more than he would ever admit. they met unexpectedly, through the dirty streets of ketterdam.
it could be love/ we could be the way forward/ and i know i’ll pay for it- kaz and inej has a tentative relationship, both of them knowing that if this turns into love it may have repercussions and dangers
and the skeletons in both our closets/ plotted hard to fuck this up- they have secrets and bad pasts that could potentially ruin their beginning
i’m never gonna love again- because they’ll only love each other, no one else :)
wesper - gold rush
once again wesper has the pretty love songs because it’s what they deserve <3 and it’s so fitting for them simply because of the pure chemistry (ahem, get it?... sorry) and magnetism between them, which is perfectly embodied in this song.
gleaming/ twinkling/ eyes like sinking ships on waters- jesper describing wylan’s eyes as “clear-water blue”. and “gleaming, twinkling” makes me think of jesper when he’s teasing wylan
but i don’t like a gold rush/ i don’t like anticipating my face in a red flush- wylan’s tendency to blush everytime jesper says something remotely suggestive
i don’t like that anyone would die to feel your touch/ everybody wants you/ everybody wonders what it would be like to love you- wylan: *looks at kuwei*
walk past/ quick brush/ i don’t like slow motion double vision in rose blush/ i don’t like that falling feels likes flying till the bone crush- them being extremely in love with each other (what’s new), and jesper mentioning that wylan made him “feel like a kite on a tether, lifted up and then plummeting down, and he liked it.”
what must it be like/ to grow up that beautiful?/ with your hair falling into place like dominos- i imagine jesper is fairly obsessed with wylan’s curls because... who wouldn’t be?
and the coastal town/ we wandered 'round had never/ seen a love as pure as it- the coastal town being ketterdam, and i like thinking about the locals staring at wesper and going “they’re so adorable...”
helnik - evermore
now... this brings a bit of pain...  i don’t know why i keep giving helnik such sad songs since they’re not the most depressing ship but... it just fits them so well. also, crooked kingdom (major one) + king of scars/ rule of wolves (not so major) spoilers. don’t read if you treasure your spoilers chastity.
gray november/ i’ve been down since july- thinking about nina in king of scars, still mourning the loss of matthias, still heartbroken while undercover
i replay my footsteps on each stepping stone/ trying to find the one where I went wrong- nina having guilt and self-loath over matthias’ death, replaying his death over and over again.
and I couldn't be sure/ i had a feeling so peculiar/ that this pain would be for/ evermore- when matthias died nina lost a part of herself, and she was in a lot of pain
hey december/ guess I'm feeling unmoored/ can't remember/ what I used to fight for- in the start of kos nina was undercover, trying to find out a new meaning, trying to find something she has to live for
can’t not think of all the cost/ and the things that will be lost/ can’t we just get a pause?/ to be certain we’ll be tall again/ whether weather be the frost/ or the violence of the dog days/ i’m on waves out being tossed/ is there a line i could just go cross?- also nina being disoriented and lost when she lost matthias, trying to heal (”can’t we just get a pause?”), trying to remove the pain from her heart (”is there a line i could just go cross?”)
and when i was shipwrecked/ i thought of you/ in the cracks of light/ i dreamed of you/ it was real enough/ to get me through/ but i swear/ you were there-  i like to think that this was a shift to matthias’ pov. when the drüskelle ship sank and they were literally shipwrecked, then when matthias was jailed in hellgate and he constantly dreamt about nina (and also about killing her but we don’t talk about that), it was thinking about nina which kept him surviving. and ofc the notorious chapter 40. and then nina doing the same (thinking about matty) when she was in turn “shipwrecked” (lost matty), and him being the only thing that kept her living.
and i couldn’t be sure/ but i had a feeling so peculiar/ that this pain wouldn’t be for/ evermore- an echo, during rule of wolves when she realised she was in love with hanne and saw that the pain of losing matthias could be healed
thanks for reading! my brain capacity has depleted. have a nice day crying. <3

how did the actor playing kaz do? i actually haven't watched it yet bc im so nervous kaz is the fictional character i relate to the most (not that im a criminal lol i have a cane and ocd) and while i've heard inej and jesper kill it i've heard nothing about kaz
honestly? i thought Freddy Carter was superb. it took a little while to warm up to him (especially toward kanej, but i think their plot this season was to get them to the point they’re at in SOC, which i assume will happen in season 2--or, i hope anyway, bc i don’t see how else they can blend the Crows’ plot into the S&B plot without the Ice Court coming into play. they also name-dropped the Ice Court, so it seems reasonable to assume that’s where the Crows will head next, especially since the season does end with Matthias headed toward Hellgate and hating Nina due to her being responsible for his current predicament, but i digress), but once i did, i loved his acting and his nuances and how much respect his disabilty was handled (though i really could’ve done without the ableism in the church scene, however awesome that church scene was).
i don’t have a cane myself, but i do have a bad knee and a bad hip that impede a lot of my mobility and cause me trouble most days (my knee in particular), and i found Freddy’s portrayal of Kaz’s disability really accurate and respectful. i think it helped that Leigh was on set a lot (she does have a cameo after all), and since she has the same disability as Kaz, she could provide a lot of guidance for how to portray him. for instance, there were scenes where, when Kaz was in disguise and therefore couldn’t have his cane on him, he had to stop to rest his knee and Freddy Carter made it clear that that knee was causing Kaz a lot of pain. the show also didn’t make him do any crazy stunts that other people who don’t understand disabilities or who don’t seek to be respectful would probably make Kaz do, so it’s already improving from a lot of disabled characters in shitty media.
i think the Dirtyhands part could have been a little more clearly displayed (what he does with Alina at the end does lend itself to showing Kaz’s humanity and the good side we all know he has, but it also does detract a bit from his Dirtyhands MO), but i hope that we’ll see more of it next season thanks to the hints we did get. and personally, i am so looking forward to that scene in CK where Kaz takes out everyone on the staircase with his cane.
but anyway, that’s beside the point of this post. in my opinion, Freddy Carter did an exceptional job with Kaz and was such a wonderful portrayal of a disabled person. it was thrilling to see that in a fantasy show, where people like you and i rarely exist.
