my friend apparently keeps going on dates with  ‘man haters’ and their separatism deeply confuses and offends her. she keeps asking me for clarification because she’s not a separatist (my wording).
girl send those ladies my way, i will happily interact with them on your behalf
you’ll never get it. just like i’ll never get your love of men. don’t bother trying to understand it if you’re not even interested in hearing us out, let alone joining us on our wavelength yet.

A Game of You/ Brief Lives
I'm seeing some people complain about Thessaly in such a way where it implies that they think the narrative likes her? Guys, she sucks on purpose lol. I am begging all of you to pay attention in English/Lit class more often. Wanda is clearly the hero of the story, everyone treating her badly are dicks, it could not be more clear. I love Wanda so much. Thessaly should die in a fire lmfao. (the parallels between her and Esther from Dead Boy Detectives are fascinating, I wonder if they ever met?) All the people giving Wanda shit are wrong; Thessaly, The Animated Severed Face on the Wall, the Moon Goddess, her family, etc.
Death, the most level headed, kind, compassionate character in all of Sandman is on Wanda's side. It's generally bad form to read the author's personal stance from one particular character, but Death is as close to a stand in for Neil Gaiman's personal opinion as we are ever going to see in a story as far as I can tell. She is always who he gives the final say to in terms of morality over every other character, very much including Dream. (We also got Barbie being a ride or die, and the disaster lesbian neighbors Hazel and Foxglove being confused but supportive, and the homeless lady Wanda helped talking about her grandson being like Wanda and how dumb it was that people were so cruel and just because some people are different it doesn't make them bad.) Go read it again.
Neil Gaiman literally talked to his Trans friends about their lives and the stuff that was happening to them and then put it in his comic in 1989! I repeat, 1989! (through to 1996). No, the terms and language aren't all going to match up to 2024, Think, please, I beg of you. He wrote Desire as non binary before that was really a thing "Well why didn't he just use They/Them" IT WAS 1989 PEOPLE!!!!!! (the concept obviously has existed for longer, I'm talking specifically about language trends).
(Characters in stories doing or saying bad things to other Characters does not make the Story Itself racist/ sexist/ homophobic/ transphobic/ etc).
I've also seen people talking about Thessaly and Dream dating, again Dream is making poor life choices, as per usual! I think he was initially attracted by her audacity and strength, and her longevity. Him sulking Byronically and inconveniently in the rain he himself creates to be more moody and Goth about being dumped is meant to contrast sharply with the scene after You Know What happens at the end of Brief Lives. He returns home to the Castle and quietly walks through the corridors, being polite and kind to everyone (freaking them out a bit in the process), he slowly washes the blood off his hands, and collapses into a chair to mourn deeply in solitude and silence. No more drama, no more rain, no more epic windswept shots of him staring pensively into the distance, just true sadness. It's almost like his earlier performance about being upset by Thessaly's absence doesn't actually matter that much in the face of true tragedy.
The first is shallow and dramatic, He's the Prince of Stories, he falls in love at the drop of a hat, but he's bad at maintaining relationships. The Drama is inherent to his being. He IS stories. But in the second situation it's more real, he's more real. The Grief is too much to bear turning it into a story. Dream is being forced to face harsh Reality. After all, like Dream said, stories are how we keep ourselves alive, "If you rob them of their Dreams, if you take away their hope, then yes, this is the truth of Mankind." Perhaps it's also the Truth of the Collective Unconsciousness of Mankind? His path forward was set from that moment on.

I don’t think it’s voter fraud but one of you posted it on tiktok with 44k followers and that’s sort of unfair. Tumblr is one thing, tiktok is another. Especially since Tiktok is the worst and always has the worst stranger things opinions.
Winning isn’t going to change shit. They are still going to call you delusional and hate on you. So what’s the point really. After mileven left you guys should have just left it alone. It’s when you started targeting the lesbian ships that even non bylers got mad too. I was mad too. Love bylers but sapphic ships always get paid dust and seeing one of them win would have been amazing.
I wasn’t aware that someone posted it on TikTok, but I still fail to see your main point. Is there a rule about sharing Reddit polls on TikTok? “Tumblr is one thing, tiktok is another.” How tho? I don’t understand how it’s wrong to share a public poll with more people, regardless of the platform. “Especially since TikTok is the worst and always has the worst stranger things opinions.” I mean, I would disagree. I think every platform has its fair share of bad ST opinions, but I’d argue that Reddit generally takes the cake. I’d also say that I’ve personally seen some fascinating and thoughtful ST analysis videos on TikTok, but I guess it depends on what your FYP is. Regardless tho, it doesn’t matter, because again. It’s a public poll. No matter what ship one supports, they had the right to share it wherever they wanted.
“Winning isn’t going to change shit. They are still going to call you delusional and hate on you.” Okay and? We still have a right to participate like everyone else? I still don’t get what you’re saying.
“So what’s the point really. After mileven left you guys should have just left it alone.” Again, why? Is there some magical rule that says everyone within the ST fandom is allowed to participate but Bylers?
“It’s when you started targeting the lesbian ships that even non bylers got mad too. I was mad too. Love bylers but sapphic ships always get paid dust and seeing one of them win would have been amazing.” No one was “targeting” anything tho. I love the sapphic ships and I’m glad Elmax and Ronance got as far as they did. But what is the purpose of the poll? To vote for your least favorite ship. For some, that’s one of those two ships. For others it’s not. But also, like, the further into the game we went, the more likely it is that people weren’t voting between ships they hated but rather ships they “liked less” out of ships they like or even love. So is your point that Bylers should collectively abstain from the polls entirely just so that a ship YOU personally support can win? How would that not be a form of “manipulation”?
Again, I think everyone should take a step back and recognize that it’s literally a meaningless Reddit poll, and it’s all just for fun

Lottieshauna thoughts?? (Personally i just kinda love the widow x widow vibe they have)
love them love them love them. my ultimate non-jackie ship for shauna. i chose this ask about them because YEAH i too am into the widow x widow vibes. post s1 i had sort of deluded myself into thinking we might get canon hints of them lmao and i think that their relationship is FASCINATING but i am still sorting out how i feel about their s2 arc. it's gonna take me a while to digest (lol) this season. but overall, ADORE this ship. i live by the jackie made out with nat and shauna made out with lottie in high school headcanons that i have formed for myself so heavily that i forget it didn't actually happen. literally rooting for adult shauna lottie every single day, like rich bitch femme lesbian lottie in her caftan x soccer mom cosplay shauna in her yellow cardigain, both of them hallucinating their long dead loves and causing death and destruction wherever they go????? PLEASE I'LL BEG! i love them so fucking much. they really do seem to understand each other on a deeper level because of that loss and their mental health issues (even if shauna doesn't want to admit it). so RESOUNDING YES PLEASE for these two!

real question here: why are some straight weirdos so obsessed with being "queer"? i’m trying to understand and i just don’t get it, like on one side your have the crazy autogynephiles, and on the other all those girls calling themselves non binary transmasc bs whatever, completely obsessed with everything "queer" and mlm fanfiction, pretending they’re bi pan yada yada but never done shit with a woman I’m just?? confused?? the fandom i’m part of is full of those young women! i’m a lesbian and i’m fucking lost and appalled they’re literally obsessed with every member of the band we stan being QuEeR but have no respect for gays and lesbians if they don’t fit into their tiny boxes and stereotypes. and that member wearing this means he’s QuEeR and this one has such a qUeR haircut and blah blah blah but none of those girlies are actually lgb and if i dare to speak up because i’m so fucking done with those stereotypes i’m the bad one and i should shut up like wtf is happeningggg i’m so so done with this gender bs can it freaking stop already!!
Someone’s probably already said this but its likely to be partly due to our hyper individualist culture & wanting to be different and cool (since being ‘queer’ is cool now). If you’re queer you’re the main character in an anime with the different coloured hair, not one of the background characters who all look the same. Tbh it’s not entirely dissimilar to how white women will appropriate beauty trends(and sometimes even the skin colour) of black women to be appear ‘cool’ and ‘different’ from all the other white women. Plus it gives the individual a license to lecture ‘non queer’ people on what it means to be queer, even if it is actually nothing at all irl. Using all the buzzwords and complex hard to define terms makes them appear smart, and obviously people like to feel smart. And since they’re part of an oppressed group (even if they’re not actually same sex attracted or even gnc, since as we’ve said queer can mean practically anything now) people more or less have to listen to them or be branded as bigoted. If you’re part of the mainstream you’re not worth listening to, but if you’re part of the counter culture (and as countless of them have said anything that is counter culture is ‘queer’) you are.
Also, particularly for white men, imo they’ll often identify as queer after learning how much of their class hurts the rest of the world. They don’t want to take accountability or feel guilty about being a white man so they just…don’t be one. Whereas for women, I believe it’s in an effort to escape our increasingly gendered and sexist world. For them it is easier to be a man. And ofc there’s also the fascination, obsession and fetishisation of gay people for both ‘queer’ men and women…that’s also a big factor.

i feel like i’ve said this before but it’s. unreal. that arthur is like. ok please bear with me. he’s like female coded in a way that’s like. how do i say this. he’s like how an incel views a lesbian. let me attempt to explain. first things first we all know the j’s are um. how do i put this. losers? maindenless? i have a strong sense that none of them were popular in high school is what i mean. and i don’t think they ever quite got over it. you know in that way men do. anyway so you can tell when you watch bbc merlin that their entire (BAD) characterization of arthur stems from having this insane hostile relationship with like, idealized masculinity. and pretty much their whole schtick is that the things that make arthur traditionally masculine are the things they perceive as faults, or not necessarily faults but. traits that lead to faults. he’s athletic and muscular, so that makes him dumb. he’s handsome, so that makes him egotistical. he’s kind of mean, so that makes him arrogant and violent. he’s a prince so that makes him entitled. and they present him this way so they can show merlin (THEIR representation of masculinity) as the “better” man, who’s value lies in his intelligence, humility, humor, kindness, and most importantly, his position as a man who is Not Traditionally Masculine. it’s incel narrative reframing, they do it all the time in like stranger things and cobra kai. they’re presenting the “weak” character as more of a man than the “strong” character through this narrative structure that values intelligence over brute strength, it should be transparent as glass really. the only reason many people don’t pick up on it is because both actors are so charming it’s easy to forget they’re playing out something so stupid. it comes across more in atlantis (merlin creator’s successor show), which makes that show virtually unwatchable to be honest. anyway back to my original point. so a lot of the time when they want to present arthur in that incredibly annoying negative light, they feminize him, which is like deeply strange but very much proves that these men have something very wrong with them. like, when he’s being an arrogant royal he gets called a princess, he’s always touchy about merlin saying he’s “fat”, and he’s bossy like a sitcom wife (which is a whole other thing i could talk about). and to really hammer it all in he’s always calling merlin a “girl” for being either cowardly or physically weak. and every time he does that, it’s presented in a way where we the audience know merlin is NOT being cowardly or weak, because he’s a Real Man he’s just misunderstood, and arthur is then this caricature of a Dumb Muscular Man With No Brains. which again they do because they have a hostile relationship with traditional masculinity, and they want to present that character as less of a man than their Non-traditionally Masculine Protagonist. and to go about making him less of a man they often just feminize him in a really misogynistic and derogatory way, because they’re operating on a really fucked up binary idea of gender. anyway this has been a post. also this is a very good representation of my brain when i think about this show, i am literally always analyzing this show’s relationship with and portrayal of gender. it’s fascinating, feel free to ask me about it anytime i will have so much to say <3

completed 10/20/2022 @ 1:48 AM Mountain Standard Time UT/AZ border while listening to fucking Big Sky - Sleepy Clouds
I didn't tell her everything. She wouldn't let me. She didn't want to know. She's NOT fascinated with POWER She's fascinated with FLIRTING with power. I need her to know the reason for the soul tie.
Sarah. You know how you keep mistaking me for an infant. Because of my little girl voice and my innocence? Wake up baby. Because you are 12 year old me right now.
And I hate to tell you the ending of this story, but a beautiful innocent woman does indeed die. It very easily COULD HAVE been me, your not so humble narrator, during ROUND 1. At 12. But it wasn't. It was a random woman. A lesbian. A mother. An immigrant. Living in a garage. I never saw her face. I never knew her name. But I was right there at her door. Fucking around all over the attached home.
Lovely fucking metaphor there Michelle... Except it's not a metaphor.
You think I'm so goddamn boring, because I held onto my innocence all of this time? You're afraid that the truth about you is going to fuck me up? It doesn't. It won't.
You really should call me up.
so I could take you to all of those deep DARK places that you pretend that you want to go to. We could do it the talking way or the sexy way
But I have every answer you could possibly need.
And all of the answers I never asked to carry.
That's right babe.
You fell in love with the kid's other mom again. And now you're sleepwalking your way to someone's death.
iF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE ROPES. LET ME SHOW YOU THE ROPES.
LET ME TELL YOU WHAT BRANDS OF HEAVEN AND HELL LIE AT THE END OF THE PATH.
yep. more veil. it feels so good to get rid of.
None of the players know any better. Everything is an accident of ignorance rather than malice. Everyone is just ignorant of what kind of ignorance caused the malice. Purity. Purity is the ignorance that causes the malice.
And it drives everyone:
MAD
We're all born knowing nothing. We're all thrust into a world full of rules and laws that we don't know anything about. We all stumble around. Just like you are right now. Real mature of you Lady. It's the running that causes harm. Because all you run into is a bunch of other runners. Running away from their shit instead of feeling their feelings and letting it go.
I remember crying on the bare twin mattress aloft the wood bed frame my father had built (for my sister, _no real ice cream_ for me right?). listening to Ben Folds Five. and deciding to run away.
I did run away. And I ran into another runner.. who ran into my Father (who was also running) and then he, the runner I ran into, ran an innocent's life (not me, but an actual non-problematic human) into their literal grave through torturous means just so he could be ran behind bars. A lot of runners hide behind bars. We hide in our bedrooms being cute as fuck.
You are the purest among the pure honey. And you think you are some kind of problem. Some crazy libertine. But you have never seen anything of the real world. Because you're so GOOD, and CAREFUL, and CONTROLLED.
And that's what gets people murdered.
iGNORANCE. mY Ignorance. nOW yOUR iGNORANCE.
You didn't really want a degree in how to sell _fake ice cream_
You just wanted REAL _MOTHERFUCKING_ ICE CREAM
You are the innocent. The pure one.
Not me. Not by a fucking long shot.
I gave you permission to be yourself and live your life. But I had no fucking right to do that. I did it from a place of love and wisdom and acceptance, but I had and have no idea what I was and am fucking with. Your innocence. Your purity. I don't know what the right thing is anymore than you do.
Do your homework. Walk. See if you can't learn some of those kids' secrets. PLAY NICE. Don't run into any other runners if you can help it.
AS ALWAYS, make sure you watch your back PuNk
&
Please Just Be a Better Mom than *I AM* While You're Out There With The Kids At The Park
*
*soul smiles*
couldn't love you more
you've got a beautiful taste
*
Just want to capture this feeling of waking up happy and pain free.
it may be 7 in the morning, all of the lights are on full white,
completely dark outside
and yeah, that's a depressing thought, scary even
my spiritual daughters are all down at the bus stop in the dark; alone for the next few months
but she's not really alone
i hope she knows that
i hope she feels that
what a terrible thing not to have
*
so much magic in pattern interruption
me thinks she's a believer
like seriously, the odds of her and I both conjuring up "as gay as possible" in our own ways, at the same time, without knowing exactly what the other was up to?
I won't forget that's for damn sure.

“It's absolutely fascinating to see how much CF's interpretations have poisoned the meta well. People speak with such certainty and authority about things that provably never happened, it feels like I'm getting gaslit by a videogame fandom.”
I don’t even think it’s the interpretations of CF specifically. It’s people wanting Three Houses to be one thing then reacting badly when it’s another thing entirely. One of the main points I’ve seen come up since launch was the idea that all the routes are simply based on differing points of view, and it’s up to the player to decide what is right and wrong...therefore the poster says Edelgard is right and that anyone who says differently can not read. Usually moral ambiguity is brought up while defending Edelgard as having done nothing wrong while everyone else is literally a certain Mr. Schicklgruber .
This is all based on people online, god only knows how many being adults above the age of majority, being unwilling to accept what a game created for middle-schoolers (CERO Rating B: Ages 12 and up) is trying to say. One of the most infamous pieces of meta, the teacher theory, was created when someone noticed how canon, specifically one of the two things Edelgard did that they initially conceded was evil, went against how he read the character and attempted to create an explanation to accommodate themselves (he also walked back the other thing as well). People actually say that Edelgard is out of character in every route but CF, and even talk about how they don’t like hearing information from the rest of the game. I have literally seen people try to argue the game lies in the non-CF infodumps, or that what’s revealed in those are not canon to the world of CF.
A big part of this is the fact players have to choose to join Edelgard, as Byleth defaults to the Silver Snow route. To many, because they didn’t choose to fight Edelgard this means that Byleth is an unthinking, moron who blindly follows orders. Not, you know, Byleth has seen the events of Part 1 for themselves, came to their own conclusions and follows what they believe is right. The player has to unlock the ability to make a decision in order to join Edelgard and her merry band, causing people to say the route is about free will and therefore good. These players don’t want to admit they decided to help the villains achieve their goals in the game, that they willingly followed a lying hypocrite. They want to believe that they are the good guys, if only to save face. Again, I have seen people argue stuff like “if you have to unlock the route, that means it’s better” and “the game wouldn’t allow us to join Edelgard if it was a bad thing.”
People want this game to be about Free Will when siding with Edelgard. They want it to be about toppling a tyrant, not propping up one. They want to claim the story is a matter of perspective, that what’s true and what’s right is up for the player to decide. And when the game’s creators have debunked this, they have resorted to trying to discredit them and declaring Death of the Author.
I personally can’t help but wonder if this is because people, I dunno, they crave post-modernism in their media. That they want characters to acknowledge tropes, snark and quip like they’re not taking things seriously, and for things to be left up to the audience’s interpretation. That they want to be seen as smart for enjoying such media, that they get it. They don’t want to take things at face value and instead to make things more complicated than they actually are. Throw in how people try to reduce Edelgard down to progressive, lesbian lord and Claude to PoC Lord, disregarding their entire characters in order to focus on aspects of their character that might not even be there. Just feels like people are using the game to make themselves look good, rather than just enjoying it for what it is.
I mean, I get that the game is so fragmented that to get a real understanding of it you need to find all sorts of pieces of info, some of which were damaged by the translation. But you’d think that as time went on and people dissected the text misconceptions would die out, at least within the fandom. Instead people champion fanfic over the actual text, the creators’ voices being shouted down by players who don’t want to be challenged, and people within the fandom are harassed and insulted for the crime of actually following the script.
Even if Three Hopes does spell out that Edelgard is wrong and she repents, it’s not going to fix anything. If anything, it’ll just increase the claims that “they didn’t understand Edelgard or the story, and they’re pandering to Dimitri/Rhea/Claude stans.” Three Houses’ original creators have said that she’s the villain, but that’s not enough for some people. I’d say it’s absolutely bizarre...but we’ve all heard fandom horror stories before. Hell, there were people who thought stories about MLP characters forcefully converting humans into ponies, waging a war to do so, was in line with the show’s messages.
Seriously, wth!?

the Megstiel tag is always a minefield of these two kind of posts I hate (one more than the other tbh).
there’s the kind I’ve already complained about. you all know them. “Megstiel is gay/lesbian solidarity!! they’re just platonic besties!!!”. that kind. insufferable, really.
the gay!Castiel headcanon is transparent and annoying that they just want to invalidate non-Dean ships (some go as far as saying he’s deansexual in case any of us dares ship him with another man RME), but I COULD buy that it’s their actual interpretation of canon. one I don’t agree with and see as superfluos, if I’m honest --when there’s no specifications or real basis to go further, trying to make anything besides “queer” The One And Only Accepted Fandom Truth is suspicious to me ngl--, but an interpretation.
Meg, however? homegirl made explicit overtures (and then some) to the THREE main dudes of the show (or two dudes and one man-shaped angel, however you choose to see it). she ENTHUSIASTICALLY propositioned Castiel AND she was canonically, explicitly IN LOVE with him. she doesn’t even have a decent interaction with a female character in all of the show (if you don’t count terrorizing Jo while she wears Sam’s body), but you’re telling me you BELIEVE in your BONES she is exclusively attracted to women and this is not some transparent way to remove her from the narrative?? do you think I’m an idiot?? lmfao.
but, look. I hate this trend but it’s a common hate. these people are interchangeable to me. I’ve seen this shit in plenty of fandoms before (love how it manages to be both lesbophobic AND biphobic, btw). I’ve been around. it’s tiring but it’s whatever.
BUT THEN.
there’s a subset of posts I encounter every damn time I check the tag. they’re all following the same damn script, which is “oh I do like megstiel...”, with some vague opinions thrown in, but rushes to make it veeeeery clear they see Castiel/Dean as inherently superior and anything between Castiel and Meg as automatically lesser. right there in the Megstiel tag!
I know some people will see this post and try some “multishipping is valid!!” bullshit. let me assure you I’m more of a multishipper than you, tyvm (I’m literally planning some big prompt list to write Castiel rareships asldkfjasdf). AND I’m a multishipper with preferences. sometimes you’re talking about a ship and you offhandly mention it’s a casual thing for you and you have another otp. that’s a thing.
but UNLESS you’re actually discussing the casual ship in question, why the hell would you put it in its tag? if all you’re saying it’s “I ship A but I ship B more”, why do you tag it “A”? if you’re saying “I ship A but I ship B more, and here’s everything I love about B and makes it better than A”, why do you tag it “A”???
the reason why is obviously because you know what the fuck you’re doing and you WANT Megstiel shippers that visit the tag to see your bullshit and react to it. it’s purposeful, it’s personal, and I want you to know I hate your guts <3
you guys are even tempting me to go into the Castiel/Dean tag and start talking about how I do find their dynamic fascinating BUT on ocassion! with caveats!! and how I don’t think they could ever be happy together even if they tried to!! while Megstiel obviously could and has so much going for it including a canon kiss!!! (which, btw, is my actual, real opinion on the matter lmfao)
I won’t, because I have more manners than you. but I’m tempted!

Favorite things about Santana that aren't related to Brittany/Brittana?
A similar ask I answered the other day also listed things completely unrelated to Brittany but I'll never say no to even more favourite things about Santana.
Let's do five again (I'll go on and on anyway):
I sort of touched on this in that above-mentioned post, where I didn't list her coming out journey because I think all my other favourite things about her intersect. But I'll highlight it here anyway that her sexuality and the story around it is so monumental in so many ways. Even just separating it from the massive irl impact for a second, it's a fascinating journey from background cheerleader to someone with her own story. I love that she goes from scared looks and whispered words in hallways to casually introducing herself as a lesbian. You know what that is?
Tumblr media
Is it weird if I say comphet? Because for that growth to really land she had to start somewhere and that was being the school slut who "never said no". It's tragic to view season 1 and 2 through these lens because it's clear, especially in season 2 where it was intentional, how miserable she's making herself. But it makes for a super interesting and emotional journey with lots to analyse, since what she says is rarely what she means.
I really love how observant she is. It's such a consistent trait which should be highly treasured in a show like Glee. Call it a sixth sense or her "psychic Mexican third eye", Santana is extremely good at reading situations and people and again it makes watching her and her interactions so delightful. I said Slytherin!Santana rights, dammit, but not cos ~she's evil~ or whatever.
To say things that aren't from a media analysis nerd perspective lol (but still kinda), I love her relationships. And I know you asked for non-Brittana things so that's why I'm highlighting that she has lots of really cool dynamics with people. Sancedes, my beloved, and Pezberry both take up huge portions of my heart but I really just love every interaction Santana has with people. Maybe that shows how great of an actress Naya was but I really just want to know more about every connection she has. I'm mostly talking brOTPs but like, with literally everyone. Even when she doesn't get along with someone, which does happen often, I'm like yes please these scenes are great.
Finally, and this is sort of strange but hear me out, one of my favourite things about Santana is her fans. I'm very glad to have been late to the Glee party because this fandom was legendary in an infamous way, but I've been trapped in Glee hell for over a year now and I love Santana fans. I don't love the in-fighting of the Glee fandom but I'm so happy that this character (who's the main reason why I'm stuck with this show) has so many passionate, talented fans. I'm just happy people like her, basically, and that I get to read fics and analyses and see stunning art because she spoke to so, so many around the world. There'll never be another Santana Lopez.

you know what, I never do these things, but actually I’ve decided I would like to get to know people better! I would like to partake of the mortifying ordeal! I would like to talk about myself for a bit!
ok for the next...let’s say five days I will answer any of these things that people tag me in, or any random personal questions you plop in my ask box. I don’t have an ask meme on hand but just....pick one you’ve seen recently, or make up questions of your own, and I’ll answer. (the answer might be ‘nope that’s private’ but I will answer.) (@ the anon who asked for book recs - I see you, I’ve been thinking of books all day, I’m going to give you SUCH a long answer, I hope you don’t regret your choices bc it WILL be full of gushing)
alright, let’s go!

Last Song: I’m currently listening to “Falcon in the Dive” from the Scarlet Pimpernel musical on loop. I watched one or two Scarlet Pimpernel movies when I was just barely too young to fully get what was going on, and the story’s held an odd but deep-seated place in my heart ever since. A few years ago I found out there’s a musical and most of the songs are pretty stellar (go listen to “Madame Guillotine” if you like big ensemble broadway numbers, it’s a banger, the bit where he cries out for God has been running through my mind on and off for a few days now haha not like that’s topical or anything), so every once in a while I spend a few days listening to them a lot.
Sometime last year I read the actual book, and got super into the whole concept of the Scarlet Pimpernel for a while. I plotted out Pimpernel aus for several fandoms, I read the entire wikipedia article, and I went looking for bootlegs of the musical. I didn’t find one, but I did find a full radioplay-style recording of the script, complete with full musical numbers, and listened to it like a podcast.
Reader, I was so disappointed. The play adds some scenes, bc a lot of the dramatic tension of the novel comes from internal conflict and that doesn’t stage super well, and the very first scene of this play – a play written in the NINETIES – features our dashing hero rescuing some aristocrats from a French prison, and then saying to the person in the next cell, who begs for rescue but is not an aristocrat, “We have enough of your kind in England.”
Enough! of your KIND! What in the merry frickety HECK my dudes!! The book has some rather unfortunate™ takes but it is from 1905, it’s regrettable but sadly to be expected. This play is from 1997. It has NO excuse. This scene wasn’t even in the book! What! the heck!
I was so disheartened that I lost my excitement for the play, and a couple songs later I stopped listening. It occurred to me just a few days ago that you could actually stage that ironically, with the person in the cell giving the audience a “can you believe this” look, and then the rest of the play could feature assorted non-aristocratic ensemble members constantly looking at the audience like they’re on The Office. And hey, maybe that’s what they did, or something similar – maybe that was never meant to be taken as a cleanly heroic stance, and the play deals with it in a complex way. It’s possible. I wouldn’t know. Kinda doubt it though, based on song lyrics.
Favorite Color: red, probably
Last Movie: I watched that new lesbian christmas movie with my family for christmas, the one with kirsten stewart and the guy from schitt’s creek. it’s very sweet and good and kinda sad, and I really enjoyed it. it also incidentally has the best gay best friend trope in probably anything ever, bc it’s not a trope (I didn’t realize until several hours after watching that it technically fits), it’s just a guy who is the protagonist’s best friend, and they’re just all gay, and then when he Gives Relationship Advice as a gay best friend always does, it’s advice about how to deal with your partner’s hangups around coming out.
actually every part of the gay best friend trope becomes better when they’re just best friends who are both gay. the big dramatic gestures (in this case, driving some ungodly distance in the snow on no notice) go from “haha how kooky” to “queer man will do anything he needs to to rescue his queer friend from an isolating & potentially triggering situation”. the relationship advice isn’t “honey you deserve some self-respect, treat yourself”, it’s a deeply sincere reminder of the vulnerability that is shared across almost everyone’s queer experience, and look I could ramble about this for a long time before reaching a coherent point but I’m INTO IT, okay? I’m into it.
Last Show: you want me to remember what show I last finished???? impossible, cannot be done, it was a long time ago and the adhd has eaten everything that happened before last week. here, instead I’ll tell you about another movie I watched, late at night with my mom in cozy companionship just a couple days ago. it’s called Quigley Down Under and it’s about a cowboy who goes to Australia and kills a bunch of racists, 10/10 would watch again. it’s from 1990 but it feels much older, with the music choices and the cinematography of a 70s Western. the cowboy is great, honorable and fearless and kind, but the breakaway star of this movie for me is the woman who attaches herself to his side and refuses to leave. her name is Cora, and she’s crazy, in the sense that she’s not altogether tethered to reality, but this never for a second diminishes her agency. she’s fierce and clever and compassionate, and she basically never does anything she doesn’t want to in the whole movie. her arc is about overcoming trauma by taking charge of her own fear and facing it head-on, she is never belittled or dismissed by the narrative or the protagonist, and look she’s just so cool. I love her. she’s so vibrantly alive. her story could probably have been handled with a bit more nuance, but honestly for the 90s it’s pretty great. I’m no expert, but I found nothing objectionable in it, just a bit of heavy-handedness.
anyway the theme of the movie is that racism is evil and racists deserve to be shot, and this too could have been handled better (not a single aboriginal character speaks a single line of english in this movie), but it follows through on that message in every way, while still being a fun kinda campy cowboy movie. overall a very good time.
Currently Watching: started showing my sister Hilda the other day, and she’s liking it! I love that show, it’s so incredibly cute. can’t wait to see season 2
Currently Reading: lmao I wish. lately the brain has firmly rejected all attempts to read anything of any length. currently pending, bc I was halfway through them when my brain stalled out, are tano’s fic What Does Kill You Can Make You Stronger, Too, a Toby Daye book - I think it was The Brightest Fell, I got like half a chapter in and haven’t picked it up in over a month, the Locked Tomb series, and probably a few other things too. ooh! also a book called Making Sex by thomas laqueur, which is my fancy academic reading that I’ve been doing in short bursts for the past year or two when I feel fancy and academic. it’s about the development of the concept of biological sex and of gender in Western society, and it’s fascinating. has among other things introduced me to the idea that until quite recently, fathers were a matter of faith. the mother? yeah, you can watch the baby pop out, we all know who the mother is. but the father? how can you know? how can you really know? we have paternity tests these days, but for all of human history up until now, we've just had to take fatherhood on faith. (not to mention we didn’t even know what fathers were contributing to the production of a fetus. clearly it was something, since you can’t get pregnant without a penis getting involved, but we have literally not known what until the past few decades. and that is wild. it has colored ALL of human history, all of our conceptions of society and family and kinship and gender, all of it, and it hadn’t even occurred to me until it was spelled out for me in this book, and it’s just......wow.
Salty, sweet or savory: for christmas my sister and I made seven different types of cookie, most of them involving chocolate somehow.
Craving: no bc I ate so many cookies. unless sleep counts. or maybe pringles, it’s been many moons since last I had a potato chip and I miss them.
Coffee or Tea: no thank you
Tagging: @coloursisee, @krchy-tuna, @sam-j-squirrel, @xzienne, @mirandatam, @viciousmaukeries, @sepulchritude, @elidyce, and @navigatorsnorth bc it’s been a while since we’ve talked, and I’m super hyped that you’re married now. v happy for you!

Phase One: Thor
Since I was looking up my past live-blog of the novel and realising how annoying and repetitive reading through it all is because of my having structured it as a bunch of reblogs, I’ve decided to organize it all into one long-ass post instead. In case anyone else wants to read it in the future. Or in case I decide to re-read it. Because I’m hilarious. 😅
SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO
Tumblr media
My Hilarious Yet Wrathful Overview Of Phase One: Thor, Redux
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
If your son who’s to become king requires a babysitter to not screw it all up and also the idea of him being king is stressful enough to put you into a coma, maybe, uh… reconsider doing that? Just a thought.
But you see here why Odin was so deadset on Thor becoming king, despite him being ill-suited for the role. It’s not about what’s best for Asgard; it’s about personal legacy. Thor is Odin’s mini me, and Loki is very much not. There are places within the text where Odin laments Thor “lacking his father’s wisdom” (he’s definitely inherited your humility, though, Odin!), but he hopes for Thor to grow into a “wise king” like himself. Whereas he holds no such illusions (lol, pun) that Loki will ever take after him.
now with tag commentary! #this scene is in the script and both novelizations #(though in reading this novel seems to just be a more complete version of the junior novel? #idk i'm confused because they're supposedly written by different authors but so far the text is identical) #and it drives me insane each time i read it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Haha, I’m a warmongering piece of shit, isn’t it funny?”
I know, I know. I try to cut Asgard some slack for being such a militaristic culture because social changes happen slowly and when you live for thousands of years per generation, it makes sense that your views on things like war would be regressive. The text says Odin has ruled Asgard for tens of thousands of years (so much for taking Loki’s “give or take 5,000 years” line literally; sure, the Odinsleep would have extended Odin’s lifespan, but by that much? Idk).
Still, fuck Odin. Especially since he’ll eventually try to shame Loki for doing the same thing he’s fucking boasting about here. And on a much smaller scale too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
…is it, though?
I actually think Loki’s relationship with being the centre of attention is really interesting in its complexity and we don’t discuss it enough. I’ve said this before, but he strikes me as the sort of person who craves attention but also wouldn’t really know what to do with it if he had it. He craves it as a result of neglect, because he’s never been shown recognition or validation. This is why he seems to revel in it in Stuttgart, even in (or maybe especially in?) his brainwashed state. But he also frequently comes across as pretty introverted and has horrible self-esteem, so I think on another level, sustained, genuine attention would make him feel kind of uncomfortable. Loki seems to believe that in order to be loved or respected, he has to literally be Thor, though. And Thor has always been the centre of attention, so for Loki, attention is synonymous with respect.
I find Loki’s relationship with wanting attention especially fascinating because I too both crave and fear it. As a borderline, I need it. When no one is paying attention to me, I lose my sense of identity. I feel as though I literally cease to exist. It’s excruciatingly painful. And yet, I have no authentic sense of self; I’m just a chameleon, and the closer people get to me, the more likely it is they’ll see behind my mask. They’ll realise it’s all a show and that I’m actually no one. And then they’ll leave. I can’t help wondering if that’s how Loki feels sometimes too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait, what? You mean goat. His horns are shaped like a goat’s. This is a ram:
Tumblr media
This is a goat:
Tumblr media
This is Loki:
Tumblr media
Do you see now? They’re like a goat. Not a ram. Not a cow. A GOAT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This book was written before Ragnarok was a thing, so it may be unfair to connect the two, but it still seems worth noting that it was Thor who reduced Loki to being no more than a trickster to begin with. “You could be more,” my ass. Loki’s problem has never been that he was one-dimensional; it was always that the people in his life, including Thor, refused to see any other dimensions to him. Which makes those words particularly cruel—as if they aren’t cruel enough already, what with the physical torture and all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Always happy to have cause to point out that
Loki was on Thor clean-up duty their whole lives; he certainly was not trying to kill Thor.
People like to point to Loki’s attempted genocide of the Jötnar and attempted(-ish? lol) conquest of Earth as proof that he’s some kind of violent maniac. But in a little place I like to call reality, Loki was historically far less aggressive and bloodthirsty than his peers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Question: why is one conqueror evil and the other is righteously entitled to ruling over the Nine Realms?
Asgardian exceptionalism FTW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can’t even begin to imagine what would lead you to expect such a thing, Odin. 😂
Tumblr media
Uh, ‘cause it is?? And also their planet is MELTING without it??
This is all only within the first two chapters, btw. Lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
“Looking for answers,” my foot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YOU WOULD THINK SO, WOULDN’T YOU??
#i mean unless you knew heimdall #he only commits treason on days that end in y
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
What’d I say? Thor clean-up dutyyyyy
Tumblr media
Just wanna remind everyone that this
Tumblr media
is why he’s smiling during this scene
Tumblr media
because it makes me laugh every time. 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
My heart breaks every time I remember that second excerpt because literally ALL OF IT happened to him when he survived falling through the wormhole. My poor boy. 😭
But also of note… Loki gets cold (and also does not like being cold). This interests me because 1) as many are aware, the prevalent headcanon that Loki has a low body temperature irritates me and 2) it possibly(?) lends weight to the theory that he may not be fully Jötun, whether by virtue of his birth or Odin’s spell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Haha, look at this Feminist Icon™ trying to take credit for his female friend’s accomplishments! Truly inspiring.
#for some reason the ragnarok lovers have somehow decided that thor is both a feminist and lesbian icon #whatever that means 🤷‍♀️ #and i'm still trying very hard to figure out why #is it literally just because he *says* he respects women or whatever in that dumb rambly conversation with valkyrie?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ooh… you were so close to getting the point, Volstagg. So close. Take your tongue off Odin’s boot for just a couple minutes longer.
Also, the author just forgot the name of the Casket. How did this book get published? 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JUST LOOKING FOR ANSWERS, HUH?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because fuck Loki, amirite? He, uh… he’s a prince too, you know.
Also… Fandral, you dweeb 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
…am I reading too much into this, or did Odin just literally forget that Loki exists?
On the other hand, the author also seemed to forget Loki existed for most of this chapter, so who knows. 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
lmao @ Jane immediately trying to convince herself she’s too rational to be attracted to a stranger
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly, though, big mood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just your periodic reminder that Thor’s sycophantic friends KNEW Loki was right and decided to throw him under the bus anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just as I’ve always said: That was it. That was their ENTIRE rationale. That Loki *could* have done it, therefore he must have. Please tell me these people have nothing to do with Asgard’s justice system.
…lol, jk, Asgard has no justice system.
Tumblr media
Ok, first of all, no.
Second: thank you, Fandral. You’re a self-absorbed cad, but also evidently Thor’s least stupid friend.
Thirdly, how…? First, it was, “Loki arranged all this because he’s jealous of Thor.” Now they’ve suddenly jumped all the way to, “All of Asgard is in danger.” What exactly does Sif think Loki is planning? He’s gonna, what… assassinate Odin and then sell Asgard to the Jötnar?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Please stop hurting me.
Tumblr media
Just so there’s no confusion: this one sentence explains everything Loki did for the rest of the movie. It explains how a person who has been historically non-aggressive suddenly transforms into a warmonger. To prove himself a real Asgardian, like his brother and father and grandfather.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
…why did Odin fall into the Odinsleep in two completely different scenes in this book? I’m super confused.
Also, we really need to talk about how cruel it is of Marvel to keep forcing Loki to prove his loyalty again and again and again when he’s been doing so almost literally since we met him. And by “we need to talk about it”, I mean I need to tie Kevin Feige and co. to a chair and spend a minimum of five hours lecturing them on how poorly they understand their own fucking character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s just be clear here: they’re talking about Loki. They’re saying Loki, their LEGITIMATE king, is an enemy of Asgard, based on evidence so paper-thin it’s practically invisible. Just… please, let that sink in. Take a moment to appreciate how utterly fucked up that is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m sorry (not really), but Thor was so much funnier before Ragnarok.
Tumblr media
This scene has always kind of bugged me. If Odin removed Thor’s powers, how come he can still control the weather? Confusing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what exactly was Thor’s plan anyway, before he realised he couldn’t lift Mjölnir? He was just gonna call on Heimdall to help him commit treason AGAIN, show up on Asgard against the expressed command of his king, and… Odin would just shrug and be like, “You got me, son! I guess I can’t keep you down. Welcome home!”?
…I mean, I guess that more or less is what happened in the end, but it’s hard to imagine it would have still gone down that way without all the stuff that happened with Loki. Idk.
#look what i'm saying is... thor is not exactly a thinking person #no one on asgard is a thinking person #except loki but he's crazy now so he's also thinking somewhat poorly lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cool, Thor. Now imagine feeling that way for ONE THOUSAND YEARS and develop a little fucking empathy for your brother.
But you won’t.
You’ll brush off his feelings of worthlessness as “imagined slights”. 😒
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nice that somebody knows how the royal line of succession works, I guess…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That sound you hear? Yeah, that’s just my heart breaking. NBD.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, they mislabelled it the Casket of Eternal Winters. Now it’s the Cask of Ancient Winters. Author must have been thirsty when they wrote this. Lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look, not to nitpick, but this is not the recommended procedure when you see a storm that you don’t believe is of supernatural origin coming. I’m just saying. Lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uh… ‘cause he is?? And your pals are committing treason AGAIN, Thor, so it technically is responding to a threat to Asgard. Just FYI.
Anyways, this is an important point that doesn’t get made often enough. People want to act like Loki illegally usurped the throne somehow, but even without the deleted scene that explicitly shows Frigga passing rulership to him (a scene which is, for some reason, entirely skipped over in this book, but whatever), understand this: Loki could not have controlled the Destroyer unless he was legitimately King of Asgard. The fact that he’s able to do so is irrefutable proof that his rulership is valid.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lmao you little shit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So… here’s my issue with this scene (and with Thor as a character): He always assumes that Loki’s acting out specifically to hurt him. That Loki’s entire life and thought process revolves around Thor. He does it in this scene, he does it in The Avengers… it’s just a chronic thing with Thor. Everything is viewed through the lens of Loki inexplicably hating him.
But that’s… just not accurate. Yes, Loki harbours a lot of jealousy towards Thor. But that’s not what’s happening in this scene. Loki is not trying to kill Thor here because he wants him dead; he’s doing it because Thor (and his friends) are getting in the way of Loki completing his ultimate goal. Loki tried to solve this problem non-violently, by lying about Odin being dead. It’s Thor’s friends who all but forced his hand by going behind his back and trying to bring Thor back to Asgard against Loki’s (and Odin’s!) direct orders.
For all the humility he’s learned in the past few days, this entire speech is still really all about Thor. About assuming that Loki’s doing this for personal reasons, because he holds a grudge against Thor for some unknown reason. This is implicit in his request to “take [my life] and end this.” It never even occurs to him that his friends are traitors to the Crown and Loki, as King of Asgard, is perhaps justified in pursuing them.
It also needs to be acknowledged that Thor’s apology here is hollow, even if it’s ultimately coming from his heart, because he has no idea what he’s apologising for. “Whatever I have done to wrong you” is not an apology. An apology addresses specific hurtful actions taken and commits to not repeating those mistakes in the future. Thor cannot commit to not repeating the hurtful things he’s done, because he doesn’t know what he’s done. Despite his best intentions, what Thor is doing here is actually kind of manipulative. He’s not addressing any substantive issue between the two of them; he’s just trying to talk Loki down. And it ultimately fails not because Loki doesn’t care or because he wants Thor dead, but because it doesn’t actually change anything.
Finally and only semi-relatedly, we should maybe at some point talk about the fact that Loki, who is stated to be a master tactician, has displayed a weird pattern of hardly ever being as lethal as he could be. He freezes Heimdall in place instead of killing him outright; he backhands Thor with the Destroyer instead of incinerating him; he, well… *gestures vaguely at almost the entirety of the first Avengers movie* Anytime the violence is even a little bit personal, he seems to hedge. Odd behaviour for somebody who’s supposedly super evil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m sorry, I know I’ve pointed it out at least a hundred times before, but I just can’t encounter this scene in any form without taking a moment to appreciate how underrated and hilarious it is.
I also genuinely wonder how many Ragnarok stans who have accused me of having no sense of humour, have failed to laugh at moments like this one. Kinda feel like if you need to have the comedy spoonfed to you in the form of ass jokes, maybe you’re the one whose sense of humour is lacking. 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s be super clear: this is not what happened. Loki did not betray Odin; he was betrayed by Odin. He did not open Asgard to its enemies; he attempted, misguidedly, to destroy Asgard’s enemies. And he most certainly did not commit suicide out of a sense of guilt.
I’m not saying Loki did nothing wrong, nor am I saying he feels no regret for the lives he has taken. What I’m saying is there’s no indication that he believes he betrayed Odin or Asgard in the process. Which makes perfect sense, because he didn’t. Everything he tried to do was for Odin and Asgard. It was misguided and horrible, yes, but it can hardly be classified as a betrayal.
The insurmountable burden on Loki is not that he did terrible things, but that no matter what he does or how hard he tries, Odin will never look at him with anything but contempt. Consider once more these passages from the very beginning of the book, at Thor’s coronation:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Consider that this book goes to great pains to point out that Odin favours Thor because Thor is a warrior like him. And yet even when Loki embraces that, even when he acts more war-like than ever before, Odin rejects him— just as he always has.
There is a reason why this moment is the last time Loki will ever call Odin his father. Because he realises once and for all that, no, nothing he tries will ever be good enough; no, Odin won’t ever look at him with pride. That is Loki’s burden. That is why he lets go.
Tumblr media
The epilogue is really just two pages of making me want to vomit.
Tumblr media
There’s your party where Thor and a certain subset of the fandom insist that Loki was mourned. There’s barely an indication here that anyone even perceives his demise as a negative thing.
“[Sif] could see Frigga thought [Loki was dead] as well” also contradicts the tie-in comic for TDW, so I don’t know what the author is on about there. Unlike the majority of Marvel comics, the tie-in comics are canon to the MCU, so it’s a bizarre statement to make.
Tumblr media
COULD YOU SMEAR THE DEAD* ABUSE VICTIM A LITTLE HARDER, PLEASE? Fucking hell.
Tumblr media
No matter how many times I encounter this scene, in whatever format, I still fail to become desensitized to how disgusting it is. I realise there’s a good chance that whatever version of events Thor has been told was twisted at best; but how you can look at a man whose son has just committed suicide under any circumstances and say there will never be a better father than that guy, is utterly beyond my capacity to understand.
And Odin’s “you’ve already made me proud” line just feels like extra salt in the wound because, again, Loki let go because he realized Odin would never say those words to him. And yet they come so damn easily when it’s Thor.
Fuck this entire family so much. I think I hate them more than Loki does. Sometimes I wonder what he would think about that. How he would react to knowing that not only is he actually loved, but that he’s so loved that people are genuinely furious at the way he’s been mistreated. That there are people who regularly devolve into full-on rants because they just can’t contain how much anger they have towards the people who hurt him. I think he’d have a hard time wrapping his head around that concept, tbh.
Anyways, to end on a not-completely-depressing note, I’m still waiting for someone at Marvel to explain how Loki knew what Thor said in this scene after plummeting into a wormhole. ‘Cause he references this conversation as Fauxdin at the end of TDW. So like… ?? Did he steal Odin’s memories before he erased them? Because that would be… kind of neat, actually. And very clever. Not entirely ethical, of course, but it’s Odin, so fuck ethics.
WELP, THAT’S IT. Thanks for following along with my dumbassery, hope you enjoyed yourselves. Lol

What I hope to see from Avatar Studios
So the last couple days have been fun - I started rewatching ATLA (for like the third time in the last six months), got a new Avatar graphic novel omnibus in the mail, and learned about Nickelodeon's plan to launch ‘Avatar Studios’ to produce EVEN MORE Avatar content in the future! Since all this is so fresh in my mind I wanted to just talk about some of the things I hope to see from the franchise going forward.
Things I hope stay the same:
Attention to world-building and continuity: Obviously this tends to be one of fans’ favorite parts of this franchise. I hope that whatever comes out in the future will maintain and build on what’s been so painstakingly built up by entries up to now.
Encouraging the audience’s imagination: On the other hand, I’m not looking for them to address every little detail that has been left unexplained. In my opinion one of the best parts of the original series is how well it was able to set up its world and characters to inspire audiences’ imaginations and then provide opportunities to apply that imagination.
Introducing its audience to diverse ideas/themes: The original ATLA series came out around 15 years ago, and even though obviously people who see it for the first time in recent years still enjoy it, I think that maybe they miss some of what attracted so many people to the series when it first came out. For me and many people my age, ATLA served as an introduction to a lot of ideas/themes from Asian cultures that seem much more widely-known in the U.S. today, including anime, meditation, martial arts, philosophy, etc. I hope that they will take this opportunity to continue to innovate in this area.
Complex characters and moral themes: In the original series Zuko is the character that to most people stands out as having the most compelling character arc, and that’s largely due to his moral complexity. I hope that they will continue to pursue this idea, without feeling the need to try and “recreate” another Zuko.
Things I hope change:
Representation: When ATLA came out it was praised for its representation of women, elderly people, and people with disabilities, which I think is well-deserved. As additional entries have been released we’ve also been getting more and better representation of gay/lesbian/bisexual people, and I hope that trend continues. However, there has been scrutiny over the show’s representation of people of color - there’s technically a lot of it but it isn’t always “good” or well thought-out. Additionally, at this point the lack of gender identity diversity is frankly unacceptable (we deserve a trans Avatar).
Cultural appropriation: My biggest criticism of the Avatar franchise up to this point is its tendency to liberally borrow from Asian, Native American, and other cultures without committing to telling stories or creating media that empower people from those cultures. This has to do with on-screen representation as well as “representation” in the people who are making the show. From what I’ve read there has always been some diversity in the team behind the show, and I get the impression that it’s moving in the right direction, but I hope they will take this opportunity to fully and explicitly commit.
Specific topics/ideas I’d like to see:
More intimate look at Air Nomad society: Most existing stories in the Avatar universe take place after the Air Nomads were wiped out. In the Kyoshi novels the little time spent at the Air Temples is from the POV of an outsider. Most of what we hear about Air Nomad society and culture comes from a) a literal 12 year old child or b) outsiders. This and the fact that Air Nomad society is characterized by “purity” makes me think there’s got to be a “dark side” to it. For example: it’s known that “all Air Nomads are airbenders” but I have to wonder if that’s because every child that’s born to Air Nomad parents has airbending abilities or if its because only people who happen to have airbending abilities are able/allowed to be considered “Air Nomads”. In the real world “purity” often comes at the price of exclusion. I’d like to understand why Kyoshi’s mother was so willing to leave a so seemingly-perfect society, beyond the fact that she fell in love with some dude.
Water Tribe development: With the above, it seems like the Water Tribe serves (or could serve) as an interesting foil to the Air Nomads - both societies rely heavily on bending for their everyday way of life, but while 100% of Air Nomads are airbenders, presumably the Water Tribe follows the given “standard” of only 10% of the population being waterbenders. That dynamic in and of itself is fascinating to me - in ATLA in fact we see that the top leaders of the Water Tribe are non-benders (an interesting contrast to the politics we see later in Republic City in LOK). I haven’t read the graphic novels that deal with the Water Tribe, so maybe it comes up there. Something else that I might just not be familiar with there is the long-term history of the society: How did they end up moving from their original Lion Turtle to the North Pole? Where did the Swampbenders come from? One aspect of the original series that receives a lot of (well-deserved in my opinion) criticism is the fact that the (Northern) Water Tribe is shown to be significantly more misogynist than the other nations. This was re-confirmed in the Kyoshi novels. I hope that they either abandon this idea, or if they’re bound to it for some reason, maybe use it to illustrate how these ideas develop and how they can be dismantled (usually it isn’t enough for one girl to beat one guy in hand-to-hand combat). If we look at the “ancient” Water Tribe society, maybe misogyny is absent. Maybe the same circumstances related to them ending up at the North Pole are related to the introduction of these oppressive ideas. Also, there have presumably been female Avatars from all nations who have mastered all four elements - where did they learn waterbending?
Focus on non-Avatar characters: The Avatar sort of functions as a walking deus ex machina due to the Avatar State pretty much always being available if it’s really, truly needed. Even just being the Avatar provides the character with material and social benefits with both humans and spirits. Part of what makes the series great is that it is able to maintain stakes by developing really strong relationships between characters: Aang has the Avatar State to rely on, but not Katara, Sokka, Toph, or Appa. In the Kyoshi novels this idea is even more explicit with Kyoshi and Rangi. I love this dynamic and I hope and expect it to continue, but I think there are other options worth exploring as well. For example, what if the Avatar was an obstacle to the protagonist?

Medea’s Worst Year of All-Time Anime/Game Superlative
Tumblr media
Nobody saw this year coming…except for maybe Barbara Walters! Who could have predicted that this year would bless us with Australia burning, the entire west coast of the U.S. set on fire, stupid people setting fires because they wanted to reveal a baby’s gender, murder hornets, Ruth Bader Ginsburg dying, an almost war with Iran, serial killer mascots arrested, policemen killing unarmed black folks for having a counterfit $20, policemen killing unarmed black folks for breaking up a fight, policemen killing black folks for holding sandwiches, policemen killing unarmed black folks for fucking sleeping, a wide variety of “Karens” coming out of the woodworks, the end of Bojack, the end of Steven Universe, the end of Empire, and a pandemic so huge it’s killed the economy, canceled fun, and given the U.S. president the dumb-fuck idea of injecting bleach to kill the virus!?
SERIOUSLY, WHO COULD HAVE PREDICTED ALL OF THIS WAS GOING TO FALL IN OUR LAPS LIKE HOT COFFEE ON THE CROTCH?!
At least there was anime this year.
At least there was SOME anime this year.
Biden won the election and Vickeblanca came out with Black Catcher this year.
Hey internet, it’s Medea here to give you her trashy opinion on this years anime and games that she’s watched or played. Because for some reason, my loser-ass loves to do out-dated as fuck memes! I shouldn’t complain, this shit brings a lot of attention to my page every year when I do this. Yes, 2020 was a complete dumpster fire so large that Domestic Girlfriend is crying foul. Many of us had to go on lockdown and ended up binge-watching the entire 957+ episodes of One Piece. I did no such thing. I am one of those “essential workers” so I didn’t hunker down for 9 months straight. But when I was home, I was watching anime. Actually, I would have done that even without the pandemic. I’m an introvert and find the human race to be deplorable.
You all know how this goes. I go over the best this year had to offer me. I had to search really hard to find the good in this year, especially in the anime world. Many things had to be put on hiatus or were delayed to a later date. Just a reminder, I don’t discriminate in what year the anime or game came out. If something came out in the happier times of 2007, that anime or game counts! Let’s get at it!
Tumblr media
First Fandom of 2020: Interspecies Reviewers
Did anyone expect a fan-favorite of 2020 was going to be a hentai? Did anyone have on their batshit 2020 bingo card that a hentai was going to grab everybody’s attention? At the beginning of the year, my mind was set on the Railgun sequel and Eizoken. It wasn’t until licensors, streaming sites, and TV stations in Japan dropped this series that I started to pay attention. And got immediately hooked! It’s about three men going to different brothels and reviewing their time with the ladies. And these ladies are of different species! So with every bang comes possible enlightenment, new kinks, or a night of having your dick sucked off more than humanly possible. This anime blew away all of my skepticism and first impressions right out the window. Maybe it’s because I’m a degenerate and am often curious about sexual content, but this was a guilty pleasure of mine this year.

Favorite Main Character of 2020: Moroha from Yashahime
I know the majority of this story is going to revolve around Towa and Setsuna, but can we please focus a little more energy on the spunky, quarter-demon girl?! I know they’re pitting Moroha as the comic relief, but I’m hopeful that she’s going to surprise us one day. We fans of InuYasha would spend the past decade and some change wondering what InuYasha and Kagome’s daughter would be like. This year, we got our answer with Moroha. She’s got this wild side to her, probably due to the fact that she’s spent her entire life on her own. And while she’s silly at times, she can get down to business in a pinch. She has her father’s sense of smell. She has a sword. She’s able to shoot sacred arrows much like her mother. And to top it all off, she has this special rouge that if she puts it on, she’s able to unleash that ¼ demon power inside her and become Beniyasha! Yeah, I know the power only lasts a minute, she’s only 14, give her a break! I will gladly go through another week scratching my head at the confusion this story gives me if I get to see one more second of Moroha and her crazy antics or her bad-ass slaying.

Favorite Villain of 2020: The Devil Believers from Black Clover
This was one hell of a year for Black Clover. It would have been an easy choice to pick the devil and possible super devil that appeared during the elf fight. But I’d like to give a nod to the filler arc villains. And you can’t blame this group for wanting the power of the devil. They’re literally the bottom-rung of the Clover Kingdom and ones with little to no power or mana. So I can agree with why they would want the power of the devil. For one thing, they’d have more power. And for another thing, they’d be able to exact revenge on those who have wronged them. On some occasions I agree with exacting revenge and when it comes to the nobles and some characters in Black Clover, some folks do deserve death. I mean, have you met the king of the Clover Kingdom? Plus, this town and many other poorer towns get looked over by the kingdom. Peasant uprise! Anyways, I thought these people were really crafty in their crimes. I mean, they were able to knock Asta out on his ass with specially made poisons. I was actually hooked to this story of Black Clover (despite it being a filler arc). I know we’ll never see them again as they have been exiled, but it did have me semi-rooting for them.

Favorite Video Game Character of 2020: Honey from Pokemon – Sword & Shield (Expansion Pass)
Sorry Raymond from Animal Crossing!
Honey is the saucy wife of Mustard…I did not expect that to come out the way it did, but here we are! She has one hell of a team you can fight once a day. She looks out for her husband, the dojo, and the students of the dojo like they were her own children by providing food, drinks, and others. However that does come at a price as you do have to give up a sizable chunk of your watts that you collect in raid dens. I’m sure a bunch of MILF chasers were more than happy enough to give her all their hard-earned watts just so they can have their one-on-one moment on the beach with Honey.
What won me over was when that one guy from a rival dojo bad-mouthed her husband’s dojo and she…I think she kicked this guy’s ass herself. I don’t think she used any of her pokemon. Game Freak won’t show it, but we all know she kicked this guy’s ass to a point where he’s begging for mercy.
Honey, for the win!
Tumblr media
Favorite Game of 2020: Animal Crossing New Horizons
This game was just Zen for me. I know the release of this game came with some controversy like Gamestop saying it’s an essential business and will remain open for people to get their copies of the game. Hell, I was one of those assholes in line waiting to get a copy on March 20th. Did I predict that a pandemic was going to rage out of control when I got a prepay copy of this for Christmas 2019? NO! I only predict political things, not deadly pandemics! The good news, we social distanced, didn’t catch the covid and got the game.
Anyways, this game has been a non-stop calming and fun ride. I can even forgive their botch-up of Bunny Day. They even have events for holidays I never thought they would ever touch. I mean, does anybody know when Museum Day is? Probably not until Animal Crossing had an event for it! I’ve been able to let my freak-flag fly with designing my island. And this goes way beyond New Leaf for the 3DS. I can make a sign post with the words “Fuck Trump” on it and post it in my yard. I can dig up trees and plant them elsewhere. I can poop in a toilet. I can craft furniture and put my own design on it. My furniture can have Tracey Sketchit’s beautiful mug on it. I can sit on Tracey Sketchit’s face. I am a sick fuck and I don’t care. I can give Raymond and Bob maid outfits. Magical time in my game! My hopes for next year…I don’t know, get the Festivale furniture, get Papi and Olivia to join my island, maybe visit Danny Trejo’s island, who knows, sky’s da limit!
Tumblr media
Favorite Het Couple of 2020: Nasa and Tsukasa Yuzaki from Tonikawa
This is one of the most unorthodox marriages I’ve ever seen. But in this 90 Day Fiance world we’re living in, I shouldn’t pass judgement on these two getting married in episode one and not knowing much about each other. Nasa meets Tsukasa as he was about to be plowed by a truck. Tsukasa saves his life. Nasa says she’s beautiful. Tsukasa says she’ll be his girlfriend if they get married. He agrees. She disappears. Four years later, Tsukasa appears in front of Nasa’s front door with a marriage registration form. Congratulations buddy, you’ve got yourself a waifu! In some way, this felt like watching Yamato and Takeo from My Love Story. I was fascinated with them progressing through their relationship. The only difference is that Yamato and Takeo took the old-fashioned route. This couple did everything ass-backwards in terms of having a relationship. But I couldn’t take my eyes off Nasa and Tsukasa’s relationship during each episode. I find them cute.
Tumblr media
Favorite Yuri Couple of 2020: Karin Asaka x Emma Verde from Love Live Nijigasaki High School Idol Club
AAAAAAAAAH! I’M IN IDOL HELL AGAIN! Yeah, no kidding! I came this close to putting Miu x Nicole from that abomination 22/7. But thank God for Love Live! There’s no telling if any of the girls from the Love Live franchise are confirmed to be lesbians. But fuck it, all of them attend all-girl schools, no males exist anywhere, and Sunshine gave us Kanan x Mari! Yeah, you know Kanan and Mari is canon as fuck, don’t at me. So naturally, I found more third-years to ship in the new Love Live series. Now I know I should have put up Ai x Rina or Ayumu x Yuu. Especially the latter due to recent events! But Emma x Karin is my OTP.
Now Emma is an exchange student from Switzerland and in coming to Nijigasaki, she first meets Karin and they became instant friends. When Emma said she wants to become an idol, Karin helped her quite a bit. Even though Karin had no interest in being an idol as her modeling career is starting up, Karin would occasionally help Emma out. And surprise, surprise, Karin ends up fascinated with the idol world and Emma helps her come to the light to be herself there. Okay, I’m totally reading this in some fragmented way, but I’m currently playing Love Live School Idol Festival All Stars and the app game has a lot more stuff involving stuff the anime has yet to talk about. Confirmed or not, Karin x Emma for the win!
Tumblr media
Favorite Yaoi Couple of 2020: Eiji Okumura x Ash Lynx from Banana Fish
It took me a while to get here, but I finally made it to 2018’s overlooked gem. Forgive me for not being fully caught up, but from what I’m watching at the moment, I’m sticking to my guns and supporting the hell out of this. I mean, I could have mentioned The Titan’s Bride here…but fuck no, I ain’t goin’ down that mess! Ash has gone through a lot, I mean a helluva lot in his past. His cute boy looks have made him a target on the streets of New York, with mafia dons, and with prison inmates. But dude can kill if you mess with him. Then you have Eiji, who is just a literal example of a “pure cinnamon roll (until episode 8)”. These two are as opposite as you can possibly get. Ash is from New York and Eiji is from Japan. Ash likes hot dogs with everything on it. Eiji likes grilled fish and natto. Ash spent the majority of his life killing on the streets. Eiji was a track superstar. You get my meaning. But when we got these two together it’s quite adorable. Ash is really able to change when he’s around Eiji. Ash isn’t some heartless killer on the street about to kill a thug with prosthetic fingers. When he’s with Eiji, he’s a joker that can easily get scared of pumpkins. And even in later episodes, you got these two acting like a husband and wife.
Tumblr media
Fandom That You Didn’t Expect to Get Into: Les Miserables – A Girl Named Cosette
Let me explain a little something. Les Mis! I have never seen the play, watched the movie, or read the novel prior to picking up this anime. Not a single one of those! And that’s a bit of a head-scratcher when you realize I was a bit of a musical theater nut in my teenage years. But one thing I do like is when Japan does an anime based on plays or historical events (like Romeo x Juliet or Rose of Versailles). The second I popped in Les Miserables the anime, I wanted to binge watch the whole 52 episode series. It is by no means a perfect adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel. Several key players end up surviving all the way up to the end of the story! But because this was my very first viewing of anything Les Mis, I took to the story of Cosette and was eager to see what was going to happen next in her tale. Unlike the movies and play, Cosette was the main focus of the story besides Jean Valjean and Javert. And thanks to watching the unfortunate stories of Cosette, Jean Valjean, the Thenadiers, Javert, Marius, and the rest, I thought it was time to watch the OTHER adaptations to Les Mis.
Russell Crowe sucks.
Tumblr media
Fandom That Made An Unexpected Comeback: Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
Higurashi or When They Cry is one of my favorite fandoms of all time! So naturally when we heard that it was making a comeback, I was excited. It was also very odd that Higurashi was given this sequel or reboot. Ahem! There’s another franchise that needs a face-lift. Umineko still deserves a better treatment. Plus, now that this series was out of the faulty hands of Studio Deen, Higurashi will get the special care it deserves. Believe it or not, it wasn’t just the anime that made a comeback for me, but the manga as well. Since 2009, I’ve read several volumes (out of order) and would every now and then come back to read the story. Back to the anime, this reboot or sequel…you know what, I’m gonna call it a “rebooqual”! This rebooqual sucked me back to the town of Hinamizawa and all the murders. Every week, I find myself comparing the current episode to one from the 2006 version. But then the fourth episode of each arc seems to catch me off guard.
Where are they going with this story and these twist endings to our favorite arcs? I did not expect Rena to turn a simple attempted murder into the end of School Days! I didn’t expect Rika to die in the most disgusting fashion they could think of. Could someone kill Teppei fucking Hojo? I will pay ¥5000 for someone to do that job. So yeah, because I know how much of this plays out and who does what, I’m usually watching and reading while making wise-ass remarks. But I still have fun with it.
Tumblr media
Fandom That Inspired the Most Crack: Konosuba
In a year where I caught up with the popular Isekais like Shield Hero and Re:Zero, I found the wacky misadventures of Kazuma Satou to be amusing as all get-out. From the first 5 minutes, I found myself laughing at Kazuma’s misfortune. Seriously, how the fuck do you mistake a tractor for a car, have a heart attack, piss yourself, and fucking die in the first couple minutes to the series? You can only get away with this shit in gag animes! But it’s not just Kazuma’s dumbass, there’s a mage who only does explosions, but loses all her energy after one blow-up. Then there’s a busty, blonde who gets turned on by getting hurt and can’t strike anything with her sword. Anime’s biggest masochist or Cheryl Tunt incarnate, I haven’t decided which one to believe! Then you have this loud, crazy goddess chick named Aqua. She’s also useless about 86% of the time! Watching their unfortunate missions is all the crack that I need to get through this year. Seriously, Darkness is just all kinds of fucked up, but we love her.
Tumblr media
Last Fandom of 2020: Yashahime
That’s right, the InuYasha sequel gets top spot here! Even though week after week I find myself asking more questions than when the episode started, I’m still hooked. If you’re like me, you watched and fell in love with the series InuYasha. So if they’re doing a sequel, you’re expecting to see all of your favorite characters from the prequel like InuYasha, Kagome, Miroku, Sango, Sesshomaru, Koga, Rin, and the rest. Actually, no! Quite the opposite! We’ve got Sesshomaru’s daughters, but no Sesshomaru. Rin is sleeping in a tree we think! We’ve got InuYasha and Kagome’s daughter, but they’re M.I.A. None of the girls even know a thing about their birth parents.
Now are these new characters a catch like the ones from the previous series? Some are! The three main girls, yes! Especially Moroha! I’ve already praised her name earlier in the superlative. Towa and Setsuna do take on some personality traits from their parents. Setsuna is definitely serious like Sesshomaru and Towa sometimes has a carefree yet loyal aura to her like Rin. I know I’m always skeptical when a series gives us a sequel featuring the offspring of the main characters. Especially when you’ve got some lame examples like Boruto and Eureka Seven AO (I might retract my diss on Boruto later)! As each week gives us a new episode, we’re unraveling new clues into a lot of things involving our old favorite characters, as well as the new ones. So I have high hopes for Yashahime for the time being!
