Rage.
‘ro..’
Burning rage.
‘..ko-’
One thing. ONE FUCKING THING TO REMEMBER.
‘wait-!’
He’d burn them all to dust. Hunt them down the way he should have all along. Send them all hurdling into the cold vacuum of space, watch their fleshy shells bloat and contort and freeze instantly.
SLAUGHTER THEM ALL UNTIL NOTHING IS LEFT.
‘roko!’
A clone steps in front of him, forcing him to stop. He glares straight at its eyes, and the presence within attempting to reach out to him.
‘Kaine. Move.’
Roko walks past after only a moments pause, the clone quickly stepping to the side and twirling to walk one step back alongside him through the castle grounds. He can feel Kaine’s creeping worry and fear and forced calm tickling the back of his mind, hounding his every step.
‘brother, please listen to me.. i know you want to make them pay but you can’t go back out yet.. it would be unusual enough that you will look suspicious..! you just got back and the humans still haven’t moved.. roko please just stop for a second.!’
Roko stops at the end of a hall, staring out the propped open door to the castles expansive ward, and the milling of soldiers and cargo within. Kaine’s clone quickly steps to the side, out of sight, and faces him with pleading eyes.
‘i know Suri told you where he is and.. right now, that’s where you need to go. i can’t and Suri can’t until she officially knows he’s back or it will look strange so.. go get her some fresh cosmic apples.. okay?’
The fire, the rage. He swallows it down with a snarl.
‘Fine. Now get out of my sight.’
Then he moves on, mentally shoving Kaine out and away. Smoothly, each step the approximation of relaxed dignity and pride, he walks out into the bustling ward.
The few units led by appointed royals were the ones presenting the castle with their cargo, the soldiers proudly congratulating each other on a job well done as the carriers were directed by castle staff to their next destination. There would no doubt be a feast later that day to celebrate, one of the few times all within the homefront would eat like kings. He would be expected to attend.
Rin would have sat next to him. He would have helped his older brother sneak food away for Kaine to enjoy later. No doubt Suri would order some ultra spicy meal be given specifically to him, and everyone in the barracks would crow in triumph as he ate ever last bite.
He can’t help his fire burning hot, but perhaps it will be taken as joyous rather than wrathful. Either way, he stays to the side as he makes his way to the castle gates, letting his soldiers celebrate their victory.
One soldier apparently notices.
“Commander?”
Caught up in his head, he doesn’t notice the lithe figure approach, or the furred paw that reaches out, until said paw taps against his arm.
“..Koko..? You okay?”
He freezes, staring straight ahead, soul jumping into his throat. It takes him a second to compose himself enough to turn his head and acknowledge her without giving in to the swirl of emotion old and new.
“I’m fine, Hime. Just going on a walk to decompress.”
Yui stares back, concern and discontent evident by her twisted ear and soft worried gaze. After an eternity, she pulls away with a nod.
“Okay. See you tonight then.”
She turns away, and he tries to make it look like he isn’t running for the gate as he takes his leave. At the very least, that had fully shocked him out of making any stupid decisions out of rage.
He would take a walk. Think to go visit an old friend. Make a discovery. Get his brother back home.
Deliver an apple to his princess, as requested.

MONKEY D LUFFY
Tumblr media
You both were making jokes and laughing while you were looking around the Island for the last time before you all hit the waves.
Luffy stopped at every single food shop and took food from there, while you paid for the food he got. Well you weren’t complaining. You loved to take care of him because he was your lovely innocent captain and also your lover.
Suddenly everyone stopped whatever they were doing because of a loud Gunshot. Luffy and you looked in the direction of the gunshot. It seemed that a celestial dragon came to this place. There was a big person who was walking on all fours and had huge chains around his neck and hands. He was… a slave. Like once you were.
Seeing this you started sweating and your heart beat increased. You knew how terrible that situation is. You slowly looked up and saw a man with snot nose and black curly hair.
Your eyes widened in surprise as you saw the celestial dragon. He… he was the one who made you tremble with fear. He was the one who made you think Death would’ve been peaceful than to live under his foot.
You remembered how he had kicked you repeatedly and how he had thrown his hot coffee on your bare skin just because he wanted to know how hot the coffee was.
Your eyes started to water and you hid behind Luffy, clutching the back of his shirt. He hugged you back with one of his hand but didn’t look at you.
He noticed how you shivered with fear. He heard you sob but didn’t ask what had happened. He knew about how you were once a slave. Only he knew.
Meanwhile the rest of the straw hats came to the place from where ever they were because they heard the gun shot and were worried if something had happened to you two.
Nami and Chopper asked why you were crying. Then the celestial dragon started to slowly move in the direction of where you all were still on top of his slave. He was not yet close to where you were at but the sole presence of that jerk was enough to break your emotions.
Luffy soothingly rubbed on your back and now turned to face you. You looked at him with tears in your eyes and whispered, “That’s him”, so softly only for your boyfriend to hear. He gently wiped your tears and placed his straw hat on your head. You then saw how Luffy walked ahead with Sanji and Zoro behind him. You stopped crying as you looked at your captain with hope in your eyes.
He went to the Celestial Dragon and beat marines surrounding the celestial dragon and punched the Celestial Dragon’s face and made that jerk to taste the dirt. You are sure he broke his ribs. You stopped trembling and smiled as Luffy turned around and gave you his classic smile. Luffy doesn’t fail to make you smile.
Luffy stretched his arms and flew towards you with Zoro and Sanji dangling in his other hand. You knew what was happening and you jumped as you wrapped your arms around his neck. You held him tight as he proceeded to fly towards Sunny with the rest of the crew still dangling on his arms.
He was already your prince but now he was your whole world, your reason to smile, your Pirate King and… your One Piece.
RORONOA ZORO
Tumblr media
Zoro got lost in the middle of your date and you were trying to find him. You suggested to go on a date on the last day and he got lost.
You were still looking for him as you heard an announcement. Your ears perked up as you started to listen to it.
The island announced that a celestial Dragon was going to reach the island soon. Everyone was warned to be on good behaviour and not come in the way of Celestial Dragon in order not to die.
You were shaking like a leaf. Your breathing became faster along with your heart rate. You were sweating. You tried to breathe as air wouldn’t enter your lungs.
You didn’t want to look weak so you hid how you were once a slave but escaped with some others one day on an island. You hugged yourself and tried to breathe. You knew your past was always haunting you. You knew Zoro was waiting for you to tell him but chose not to.
Then you saw from a distance, a big ship had stopped on the port. You weren’t very close to them but could see them.
You slowly looked up. You saw the man with grey hair and big beard, sitting on top of a slave. You saw how the slave crawled down the ship with that jerk on top of his back.
That man… he tortured you. He lit his cigar and with it, he burnt the skin on your shoulder just to make you scream in pain. Once you screamed he’d use that reason to beat you up and not give you food for days. Oh how he smiled when you cried with pain. He enjoyed to make you suffer as you were his new slave. You remember how Zoro frowned after seeing your scars every time he looked at them. Chopper cried when he treated them, but you just lied whenever they asked about your scars. Of course Zoro didn’t believe them because he knew you weren’t ready to tell him. So he chose to wait.
You froze in place. In your head you screamed. You knew you should run away. But you couldn’t. Tears wouldn’t stop flowing from your eyes.
“Zo..ro”, was the only word you managed to say as you shivered. Suddenly you felt two strong arms pull you back to a hard chest. As soon as he hugged you, your knees became weak as you trembled. He caught you and wiped your tears soothingly. He asked you what had happened but you couldn’t speak. Instead you pointed towards the Celestial dragon.
After hearing the announcement, Zoro actually had a plan of getting you then running to ship with everyone and getting away. But after seeing you in such a state, his mind changed. He exactly knew what to do. Meanwhile you see Robin chan and chopper running towards you two in order to leave the island quickly. Their hearts broke as they saw you weeping as you held Zoro tightly.
Robin chan hugged you as Zoro placed his hand on his swords and ran towards the Celestial dragon. He beat all the marines around and charged front. Then you saw Luffy attacking with Sanji by his side. Zoro sliced off the clothes of the celestial dragon and scarred his torso.
“You can’t get away after hurting my lover”, he glared at the celestial dragon. Then the monster trio ran towards our direction.
“LET’S SAIL QUICKLY”, Luffy shouted. Zoro came running towards you and picked you up with ease as he ran towards Sunny. You threw your arms around his neck and you wrapped your legs around his waist.
You hugged Zoro and inhaled his scent. He smelled like wood and leaves. That must be because of him getting lost in the woods. Well you knew you had to thank your crew for doing this for you. For now you just closed your eyes and held onto your boyfriend tightly. He was your love, your man, your marimo and the one person you'd love to call... your precious prince.
BLACK LEG SANJI
Tumblr media
You and Sanji walked around the small island before you again continued your journey. You both heard a loud noise which sounded like a horn. You looked at the place from where the sound was coming and saw that it was a ship of Celestial Dragon.
The celestial dragon had brown hair and had a small beard. His snot was visible to everyone. He was sitting on a person who was bleeding from his head. He wasn’t even treated. He looked very injured.
You could recognise that celestial dragon. He was the one who tortured you by beating you with rods to make you scream in pain. He made you to work all day long without mercy. He made you to scream and then hit you for screaming.
Without mercy he sat on top of you while you carried him, then kicked you in the stomach because you fell to ground as you couldn’t carry him.
He loved to harass you and all the other slaves. His evil grin spread wide whenever you collapsed to the floor because you couldn’t even stand anymore. Now he had another reason to beat you up. Once you knocked out while you carried him. He kicked you but you didn’t respond. So he thought you were dead and made his men to throw you in the boat of dead bodies of slaves. But you were still alive. When you woke up you immediately threw up into the ocean. The bodies of the slaves were horrible because of their condition and how beaten up they were.
You cried for them and also… you also cried with happiness that you weren’t with him anymore. You felt sorry for the bodies of slaves. But the feeling of dead bodies round you didn’t disgust you because the celestial dragons were the most disgusting of all. You were happy to even be alive and escape that hell.
You hid behind Sanji as you gasped for air. You were having trouble breathing. Your surroundings became very uncomfortable. Your heartbeat was raising quickly as you looked at the celestial dragon. You were getting a panic attack. He hugged you as you held onto him tightly.
Sanji didn’t ask you anything. He didn’t knew you past nor did he want to pressure you. He respects if a person choses to not talk about their past. He never saw you so scared. He soothingly rubbed your back. Sanji was your home and straw hats were your nakama. You slowly admitted that you were his slave and he tortured and harassed you, so you were scared of him.
He wiped your tears as he told you to just stay back and watch as he lit his cigarette and went towards that jerk who made you cry. He kicked everyone with ease and wiped out everyone. Then came Luffy and Zoro as they joined the fight. Chopper and Nami hugged you as you returned their embrace. Sanji kicked the Celestial dragon in face and broke his neck.
Everyone started to run towards Sunny and with one swift motion Sanji jumped in front of you and picked you up like a princess. Then he did his Sky walk while he still held you in his arms. You always go crazy whenever he does that. To light up your mood he always picks you up like you don’t weigh anything and sky walk on top of that whenever you feel sad.
This time… it was different…. You fell in love again. Tears streamed down your cheek as you hugged him tightly with your head in the crook of his neck. He smelled like shampoo, perfume, spices and nicotine. He was your prince, your dream, your knight and your All Blue.
TRAFALGAR D WATER LAW
Tumblr media
Just like usual, before leaving the island, you and your captain were stocking up on medicines and medicinal books. It was like shopping date. You never get bored with this because it’s your special moment together.
You both go and pay for it and exit the shop. Penguin came to you and took your bags as he went to the submarine. That was so sweet.
You and Law both slowly walked towards the port hand in hand as you talked. Law rarely shows PDA and this was one of the days he at least holds your hand in public. Suddenly there was a loud scream and you two ran towards it. There you saw a celestial dragon was beating up her slave.
Law looked at you and saw you were completely pale. Your eyes were wide open. Your limbs trembled and you went behind law and stayed there. You gripped his shirt tightly and covered your mouth with your other hand. You were crying but didn’t want to make any sound but still Law could hear your sobs and his heart dropped.
Law didn’t knew why you were crying. But being the clever man he was understood that you were getting scared because of the… celestial Dragon. Then it came to him. The scars on your back and legs. He always knew they weren’t from a battle like you always said.
Now that he knew... oh boy he was furious. Bepo soon came towards you two. Law made sure you were with Bepo and he slowly went towards the celestial dragon. Not even a second later he freed the slaves in a swift motion and made them to teleport. The chains exploded and created a smoke screen. Then he wiped out all the soldiers and guards in the way and in one instant he got a heart in his hands. Due to the heavy smoke no one could even see where he was and who he was.
With the heart Law ran towards you. He gave you the heart as he picked you up and ran with Bepo on his side towards the submarine. You had that awful woman’s heart with you now. In your hands.
That horrible woman pulled your hair harshly and used to beat you. You were her new toy, which meant you were the new person who they enjoyed to break. As you could scream and cry for help she watched with happiness in her eyes as she burned the skin on your legs and back. Without mercy she used to burn the same the same place even when it wasn’t healed completely.
You had another slave friend with whom you escaped but… in the end, that celestial dragon, shot your friend. As you both escaped. You ran… you ran with tears in your eyes as your friend screamed for freedom. You knew that meant for your freedom especially. You still had horrible nightmares because of the trauma. You still could clearly hear the screams of the slaves who begged for their lives but got killed in a terrible way in her hands. You still have the heart in your hand… you could choose…. Life or death for that horrible person.
You look at law and smiled with happiness as you let your tears fall. You were so happy to be a member of the heart pirates. And mostly… a person beloved to Law. You were lucky to have Law as your captain, your saviour, your boyfriend and your Pirate King.
THE END
Like, comment and Reblog!
what would you do if you had the heart of the celestial dragon?
Tell me in the comments below!

Sweet guardian over my sleep
Part 2 of 'Oh my compassionate light' It's also on AO3.
Fandom: The Witcher (TV) / Pairing: Geralt x Jaskier / Words: 2322
Summary: Snow had been falling gently all day and the moon was now high and bright, its light hitting his bed like the midday sun through the narrow window. He could feel the silence finally setting in the keep, all its residents now in the comfort of their rooms. His was simple, cold, and honest to gods depressing but he had slept in worse. Cold as he was in it the room was not the problem.
Or: A sleepless night and an outburst by the fire. Prompted by lyrics from Wunderbar, by Deine Lakaien.
///
Glittering snowflakes Under your golden glow Wrap myself up well In my woollen coat I am lying at your feet Sweet guardian over my sleep
Jaskier was contemplating the ceiling in his bedroom in Kaer Morhen for what seemed like an eternity. He had hoped the empty bottle of wine resting in the small nightstand would have lulled him to sleep by now but instead of quieting his mind, it was making it vibrate with a million thoughts.
Snow had been falling gently all day and the moon was now high and bright, its light hitting his bed like the midday sun through the narrow window. He could feel the silence finally setting in the keep, all its residents now in the comfort of their rooms. His was simple, cold, and honest to gods depressing but he had slept in worse. Cold as he was in it the room was not the problem.
The problem was he hadn’t been sleeping well for a while now, and no amount of comforts had made a difference. And he had tried, lordlings and noble ladies notwithstanding. He felt changed and he concluded that his mind hated silence where it once thrived in it for inspired writing and song. The quietness was now deafening. It left him alone with his own thoughts and he had been avoiding those for the better part of the past two years.
After a story with dragons and a mountain, Jaskier had found himself in what had been the worst time of his life. He had already been through a lot while growing up and traveling with Geralt on the Path. He’d seen and experienced horrors and tragedy, but Geralt’s words to him that day had bruised his heart like nothing ever before.
Once he settled to what his life would be without Geralt he realized he had changed. It hadn’t been just the betrayal, disappointment, and heartbreak. Or the loneliness and longing. It had been the silence. His own silence.
After the mountain, he tried to fill every possible moment with sound and laughter. Until then he had never been as loud, which was a statement on its own. He chatted mindlessly with anyone and every one as if silence were chasing him. He courted and sang and fucked to muffle his mind whenever he found himself alone with it. He felt chased by his own thoughts. Thoughts of Geralt, unrequited love, and abandonment. Memories of starving brushes of skin, desperate stares, and an ongoing humiliation and shame for not being able to stop loving his best friend and muse. And so the nights had been different ever since.
With not only his mind against him but also his risky life as the Sandpiper, a torture session and jail time later, he was exhausted. Even after months of poor sleep, his mind was the constant intruder to a much-needed peace.
He relented and got up with a frustrated sigh. There was no point in freezing here if he was not going to sleep anyway. He figured the old but large settees that were placed in front of the fireplace, in one of the grand hall’s adjacent rooms, would be empty and a much warmer alternative. He’d get another bottle of wine from the pantry on the way there and try to finally pass out and sleep.
He was thankful for the deserted keep this late at night. He was in no mood for cordial exchanges or bitter banter, whichever came first. The large fire ahead was still going strong and he could feel himself warming up, a quarter of the new bottle down his throat already.
This was a small room. The fireplace was disproportionately big for the space, its mantlepiece tall enough to almost fit a man beneath it. In front of it there was a settee. It was large enough to fit a handful of Witchers and when he turned to sit he nearly jumped out of his skin.
“Melitele’s tits!” Jaskier shrieked. “Fuck, Geralt! You nearly gave me a heart attack!”.
Geralt was laying there, his front to the fire, his right arm supporting his head, staring intently into the dancing flames.
“You’re the one sneaking around,” he grunted, eyes still on the fire. With a sniff, he turned to Jaskier, who immediately felt overly conscious of the bottle in his hand, and he gripped it tighter.
Geralt looked from the bottle to Jaskier and then back to the fire in from of him. “Can’t sleep?”, he asked.
“No, dear. Sleep has been a bit elusive of late,” he said in a low voice. “Besides, my room is fucking cold so I decided to try my luck here!”, he eased then.
“And I see your sleeping habits are still awful.” Jaskier glanced at Geralt then, his hair gently touching his cheek, eyes even more golden with the reflected fire in them. Gods he was beautiful and Jaskier just wanted to reach out and touch him. “I figured you’d sleep better in Kaer Morhen.”
“I usually do. Just not tonight.”
Jaskier wanted to know what was keeping him awake but decided not to ask. Depending on the reason he might not like the answer.
Geralt remained quiet and Jaskier assessed his options. He felt a little uneasy with these alone times with Geralt. They were few and far between these days but Jaskier hadn’t particularly wanted to fall into a too quiet setting with him. He feared he would feel the need to fill that quiet and he worried he would say more than he should, or that Geralt would pick on even more with his Witcher senses without the usual fuss that followed them during the day. But he also missed having Geralt just to himself, his attention always consumed with something else. He missed the intimacy that he no longer hoped he could have.
It would be suspicious to leave and go back to his room, or any other place for that matter. Geralt was splayed across the settee with little room left to sit next to him and it wasn’t likely he would make an effort to budge. Jaskier placed the bottle on the floor and lowered himself down to the furs that were placed in front of the sitting arrangement, careful to not obstruct Geralt’s view of the fire, and placing himself a little to his left, facing the fire as well.
They spent a few moments in silence, the cracking fire loud enough to fill to room. Their minds were somewhere on their own, and Jaskier was wanting to speak but failed to get something to say. He didn’t want to talk about anyone else, or the Path and its monsters, or the keep’s secrets and stories. The need he had to fill every void with chatter when he was with anyone else simply didn’t happen when he was with Geralt. It had, at first, and for a while, but after a few years, their silences became loud enough that words were not as needed anymore. He wondered how he could feel so alone when surrounded by crowds of people and feel so whole when alone with Geralt. His heart ached at the thought.
“You’re tired.”, Geralt finally stated.
Jaskier looked at him, a little surprised. “Is it that obvious?”
“It is to me.”, Geralt returned his gaze at him.
Jaskier’s heart skipped a beat at that and he felt the need to hide from a Witcher’s scrutiny as he sensed Geralt was always very much aware of what he was trying to hide even if when presented with Jaskier’s best-schooled expressions. Fuck. His uneasiness with being alone with Geralt had not been misplaced.
Jaskier averted from his questioning gaze and turned it back into the flames. He flexed his hand, now healed, and suppressed a shiver, but then smiled when he remembered Geralt’s angry speech of how that fire-fucker would pay tenfold on what he’d put Jaskier through. A sign he cared, at least a little.
A hand to his hair snapped him out of this memory. He turned to Geralt again, eyes wide and inquiring, his heart rate picking up. “It’s gotten long. It suits you.”, Geralt smiled, petting Jaskier’s hair slowly.
The gentleness of the gesture almost brought tears to his eyes and again his mind raced with the same million thoughts that had been his curse the previous years. Thoughts on how some feelings had come to be, like love, and how sure he was that others wouldn’t, like happiness.
Thoughts about unfairness, heartbreak, and anger. Thoughts about fleeting touches, loving stares, and missed opportunities. Oh, how his mind had played tricks on him, giving his heart the hope he had never really felt was real.
They stayed like that for a while. Jaskier drank some more, and Geralt sat up to join him and to share from his bottle. Jaskier was now a little drunk, his cheeks pink from the wine and the warm fire. The closeness and intimacy pulled him in into a haze, and the wine was now a velvety goad to his tongue.
“I’ve missed this, you know. Our time spent in front of fires such as this.”, Jaskier said. “When our worries were different and I felt we had all the time in the world. I always thought those times would last forever.” He leaned his head into Geralt’s knee and Geralt moved his hand back into Jaskier’s hair, soothing him. Jaskier closed his eyes and didn’t dare move lest Geralt remove it. This gentleness was killing him.
“I am tired, Geralt. I’ve been trying so hard to be… useful and deserving. But then, I’m not even sure what I’m trying to be deserving of. Of kindness? Empathy? Of you, I think.”, he concluded, eyes fixed on the flames.
“I feel like running away. I feel like I don’t want to face what is coming, but I can’t fandom the idea of having you face it without me. Of not being with you. And when you left me on that fucking mountain…”, he wanted to be angry, to lash out but sobbed instead. “I thought I could be strong enough but I don’t think I was. I was so alone. I missed you so damn much. And you discarded me like I were an old useless thing!”, tears were rolling down Jaskier’s face now, a slight tremble in his voice.
“I did what I do best. I helped where I could. You know I hate injustice so I did what I thought would be good. But I also did it to make you realize that I’m good enough. I did something that I thought would make you proud of me. I’m so selfish! I got praises and thanks but all the while I spitefully thought “Geralt would be proud of me for this! He will regret leaving me behind.” I’m such a hypocrite.”, his crying came in ragged breaths, pent-up emotions coming all at once. “I think you would be ashamed of me. Maybe you were right all along, and I should have just stayed in Posada that day and unburden you with the likes of me.”
Geralt lowered himself to the floor, sitting next to Jaskier and pulling him into a hug. Jaskier’s face was now burrowed into Geralt’s neck and he wept.
“I could never be ashamed of you, Jask.”, Geralt says quietly. “You are the bravest man I know and I am proud of you no matter what you do. And I know your heart. You are good and I just want you to be you. You are enough and that is all I need.”
Geralt parted a little so Jaskier could look at him, so he could see the sincerity in his eyes. Jaskier felt his words envelop him like a warm blanket on a cold night.
He was a mess, with tear-filled eyes, red cheeks, disheveled hair. He had never felt this vulnerable but the thoughts that had been torturing him relentlessly were now subsiding and silence was starting to feel like silence once more. Geralt was looking at him fondly, even if a bit worried. Gods, Jaskier would drown in those golden eyes if he could.
Geralt wiped Jaskier’s tears away and kissed his cheeks so softly that Jaskier had to make an effort not to bawl again. Kindness had been lacking from his life and Geralts’ felt so true he was not sure how to take it. He had always known Geralt to be kind, even if the man himself opposed the notion, but he had seldom experienced it. This small gesture had been so intimate he felt moved by its honesty.
They stared at each other for a few moments, until Geralt pulled Jaskier’s head into his lap so he could continue to gently, always gently, stroke his hair.
As if sensing exhaustion finally catching up to him, Jaskier laid down to do so, his reeling mind going blank and he found himself focusing on his senses instead. Geralt’s warm hand on his waist, the other stroking his hair. His head pressed on a strong thigh, Geralt’s legs stretched, his feet crossed, closer to the fireplace. The ongoing cracking sound and his now slowing heartbeat.
He felt warm and safe, his mind giving him some deserved rest now that he was under Geralt’s care. Jaskier let himself be soothed into sleep and for the first time in a long while he drifted into a dreamless slumber.
Tomorrow he would agonize about words that had been said and not said. He’d fret about tears that had been spilled so earnestly. He would again regret his runny mouth and bared feelings, but for now, he felt protected in his frailty, his heart sheltered in Geralt’s hands.
For now, his silence would give him a truce, his relentless mind at ease with Geralt as a guardian to his sleep.

Tiny new year's message for you all, along with the ROs' wishes for the years to come. Have a great end of the year! ✨
Slowly yet surely, the three siblings kneel before their mother's statue. It stands proudly in the middle of the throne room, which remains empty otherwise.
For one, this is their first time setting foot in the throne room. For the other, this is the first time they feel welcomed by its cold ambivalence. A third one rises from their seat on the ground, to stand proudly next to their mother.
Catherine is the first to speak. "Mother," she begins, but hesitates. Her thoughts are unorganized, perturbed. She tries again. "Mother, as every year, we reunite under your splendor to ask for your help."
Diana clenches her jaw, but any words she could say remain locked under her tongue. Not all of them agree with praying to a statue, golden or not. One's wishes aren't always heard, and in this case, they are rarely paid mind. Oliver's eyes remain on the statue's feet.
They are resplendent, he notes, even more so than the rest of it. Gold covers the statue from its crown to its feet, but it's the latter who remains pristine against any and all advances of the dust and passing years.
Oliver wonders how many times Catherine has kneeled before the statue and touched its feet, to ask for guidance. His eyes dart nervously across the room, as he questions if he should have made more effort too.
If he should have prayed to the statue a bit harder.
Diana tenses next to him. No, is what she would say. Ahead of them, Catherine prays. Yes, she would counter. And, as always, he'd be left in the middle.
"Mother," Catherine's words drown his thoughts. "Grant us the wisdom to outsmart any threats that may come our way. Let us thrive in the darkness of times."
"Mo—" Diana mumbles, and while her eyes should be focused on the statue that stares at her with blank eyes, they keep going back to her sister. Catherine glares quietly. "Your Majesty." She corrects herself.
"Give us the strength to crush our enemies, and to become power itself through the union of parts."
Oliver stumbles forward, still with Diana's words running inside his head. She'd shown some caution about the neighboring Kingdoms and their sudden alliance with each other a couple days ago.
It is what she wishes for, not what he wants. He glances up at the statue's eyes, who stare back, unmoving. Unreachable and empty, just like his mother's real eyes.
"Mother," Oliver said. "I ask of you. Keep the people happy and safe within the Kingdom's bounds."
As he retreats, he can see the look Diana and Catherine exchange. Diana's burning anger is replaced by a forced impassiveness once her eyes fall on him. "We must leave now." She says and leads the way to the doors.
Catherine doesn't reply. She stays where she is, Diana's steps filling the room with a repetitive, rhythmic sound. "You can leave." She says. "I will pray to Mother for a bit longer. My mother, that is."
There's a loud crack as the doors close, signaling Diana's absence. Oliver remains with one foot crossing the door frame, the other still in the throne room.
As always, he is left in the middle.

mind blind. button x kent, 1.8k words. inspired by this ask about the ROs helping button manage a panic attack (so, cw for depiction of a panic attack/extreme anxiety). sabrina wiseman is unsurprised to find that undercover work is stressful.
The ceiling is dotted at long intervals by waning light bulbs, whose dim halos have a way of blurring the hall’s few distinctive features. Sabrina’s eyes have trouble focusing, anyway. There is grey, and there is brown, and there is the black shape of Kent’s shoulder half a stride ahead, leading her around the next corner.
This stretch of hallway was the biggest obstacle when planning the mission. Relatively deserted, with little chance of interruption, but it was at least a few minutes’ trek between point A and point B, and they needed every second.
Right now, they happen to be perfectly on schedule, and Sabrina is grateful for the dead air. She just needs a moment to collect herself, to align her breathing with Kent’s brisk pace down the hallway. One breath for every four steps, following his lead, and she’ll be back to herself by the time they round the next corner—which is coming up now, she realizes, as Kent takes an abrupt left. That’s okay. One more breath, and she’ll be fine.
She steps through the doorway, which she hadn’t noticed Kent opening, and forces herself back to alertness. The room is small. It’s as sparse and poorly lit as the hallway, with no visible evidence of the files that Kim had emphasized were mission critical. Swallowing another spike of panic, Sabrina opens her mouth, but Kent is faster.
“This isn’t the room,” he tells her.
“Okay.” She presses into the wall at her back and takes another breath. “So why are we stopping?”
The tremor in her voice is answer enough, and Kent is kind enough not to acknowledge it as he turns to close the door. “We can do our job in five minutes, if we have to. We can’t do it if you’re not at your best.”
If it were anyone else, she’d bristle at the suggestion and stride back into the hallway at double the pace. But Kent weights practicality at least as heavily as his concern. From his mouth, the words are simple fact: neither of them can afford her distraction, but they’re a good enough team to manage a detour.
Kent meets her eyes briefly, a small smile teasing the corner of his mouth that she can see. She barely registers it before his focus snaps back to the doorway.
His diverted attention is appeasement enough for Sabrina’s pride, and she lets herself sink. Not to the floor, just the few inches it takes for her neck to fall back between her shoulders, cradling the crown of her head against the wall. Her hands, clasped behind her crumpled back, feel cold and sickly on its lukewarm surface. Her eyes are pointed at the ceiling, but they scan aimlessly without seeing. She screws them shut and waits.
This place needs a makeover, says Nick, who had for several minutes been indistinguishable from the thousand other nervous hums in the back of her mind. How many ceiling tiles do you think aren’t stained? Twenty bucks says it’s five or less.
If there were any windows, she knows he would ask her about the weather instead. But his impression of the space is only as good as her own hazy, stuttering glances, and though he tries, there is little among the blank walls and shadows to latch onto. Still, she opens her eyes and looks up.
He must feel her unease resurging as she takes in the room once again, because his next words come in a rush of thought faster than he could ever speak them aloud: Wait, no, I can already tell that won’t help. Don’t humor me, okay? If I’m not helping, I’ll be quiet.
Nick is, of course, physically incapable of producing any noise in his current state, so he does technically keep that promise. But in the past week, Sabrina has come to understand what it means when someone calls her mind “loud.” Her own anxiety is familiar to her, slowly building and fuzzing the edges of her perception, but Nick’s mind has never felt so foreign. It is deafening in its wrongness, its intrusion. He is terrified.
It doesn’t matter whether he voices it; Nick is worried someone will find his sister having a panic attack somewhere they’d kill her for trespassing, and she would be lucky to die on the ugly floor of that boring hallway because it would mean she at least made it out of this room, whose shadows are growing thicker and more tangible until they seem to press against her throat. Her body falters under the weight of two consciousnesses as their respective panics converge. The wall at her back is painful with its rigidness, its press against her spine, its wrinkled and uneven paint.
Somewhere in the back of her mind, Sabrina is struck by a sick inevitability. Of course she couldn’t do this, after Nick warned her, after she insisted. Of course her worst mistake would be to play at field agent, and of course she would bring her brother and Kent down with her. If she could think or breathe, she might wonder if Nick felt vindicated by her failure.
“Sabrina?”
Kent’s voice is closer than it should be. She feels him at her right side, between her and the door he’s supposed to be watching.
A hand comes down on her shoulder, gentle as the voice that follows. “Sabrina, look at me.”
She shakes her head, but the scrape of her scalp against the wall is unbearable. She winces and lurches forward. The shaking motion grows tighter, jerking her chin to either side in frantic protest. I can’t open my eyes right now because any visual input will be the straw to break the camel’s brain, and then I’ll really be inconsolable and we’ll either die here, or worse, make it out as failures, is what she wants to tell him, but the words won’t form even in her mind. She screws her eyes shut tighter and finally halts the motion of her chin, holding it angled away from him. Please please please understand.
“Should I not…” He trails off, removing his hand—but it doesn’t go far. When he clears his throat and tries again, she can still feel it just barely hovering above her shoulder. “Is it okay to touch you? Yes or no.”
Sabrina tries to hum her assent, but the flat “hmm” that leaves her nose communicates little. Instead, her left hand escapes from behind her back and reaches for Kent’s wrist. She presses his hand once, firmly, back to her shoulder, where it offers a comforting squeeze, so brief she nearly misses it, before sliding to her forearm. His free hand follows suit, and he pulls her forward off the wall. She only catches herself when her head meets his shoulder.
The darkness as his body shields her eyes is a relief, and the first thought she has in its clarity is to wonder how much of her weight he would bear, if she stopped holding herself upright. Her arms, folded across her stomach, form an awkward barrier between them—one already crossed by the steadying hand he has placed lightly at each elbow, the tilt of her face towards his neck. Leaning against him, with his nose at her ear, she feels the rhythm of his breath, deep and deliberate. It takes a few moments for her own body to match it. After three full breaths shared between them, her mind quiets enough for Nick to resurface.
Okay, Button? His relief is tangible, though she’s not sure how much of it is her own.
She nods—a motion that, in the crook of Kent’s neck, feels embarrassingly like a nuzzle—then answers aloud. “Fine now.”
Mumbled weakly as they were against Kent’s shirt, the words must have been barely audible. Still, his nose dips to her cheek as he nods in acknowledgment, and he takes one step back. Sabrina’s arms slide out of his loose grip to hang at her sides. Studiously avoiding his gaze, she can’t tell what he’s looking at as she turns towards the door.
Kent doesn’t move. She waits, scanning for shadows, before calling softly over her shoulder. “Time to go?”
“If you’re ready,” he says evenly. “We can afford two more minutes, I would guess. It hasn’t been long.”
She hums noncommittally, and Kent steps beside her. Their arms don’t touch, but the space between them is so slight that she would barely have to move if she wanted them to.
Nick?
Don’t you dare, he warns, managing to sound both cheerful and stern. If you try to apologize for what just happened, I’ll start singing the Ghostbusters theme again, and I won’t stop until you’ve thwacked yourself on the head a few times for me.
Apologizing is one thing, Nick, she says. Self-flagellation is a bit harsh.
I agree! So don’t apologize, and I won’t enforce it.
Nick can’t hide a thing from her anymore, and though she knows his lighter mood is genuine, it’s clear how shaken he is. Does he always get that worried, when she has an attack? These circumstances were admittedly exceptional, but how much of that helplessness was her own?
I’m just glad Kent was here, says Nick, nudging those questions into some hidden corner of her mind. He’s all right.
Yes, he is. He’s looking at her, too. She won’t return his gaze, but she feels it on her and thinks he must be gauging whether she’s really recovered. But there is no tension, no intent in the small space between them. Kent is just… looking. Trusting her to watch the door. Thinking something that she’s sure she could never even begin to guess.
“I’m ready,” she tells him, and grabs his hand—knowing that he won’t outwardly react (it’s Kent), but still not looking, just in case. With one tug on his arm, she leads him forward and poises her free hand over the doorknob, waiting on his confirmation.
“Good,” comes his always inscrutable voice in reply. “Let’s go.”
Kent takes the lead again when they return to the hallway, and Sabrina slackens her grip on his hand, slowing her pace just enough that she’ll drop it as he pulls ahead. When his arm stretches uncomfortably behind him, he doesn’t slow down. Instead, he pulls on her hand, with just enough strength that she has to scramble to avoid tripping over her feet. The momentum carries her back to his side.
“Let’s go,” he repeats. His tone is neutral, but he squeezes her hand once as she matches his pace.
A light bulb flickers above them, scattering the shadows. For a moment, the hallway is as indistinct and menacing as when she’d retreated into that room. Kent’s hand is in hers, though, and he doesn’t miss a step. His outline is clear even in the waning light.
They round the next corner.

Why not me? (Chapter Five)
Summary: Denali has been single all his life, and has always been secretly envious of everyone around him being able to find love so easily. Rosé proposes the perfect solution for his best friend.
Note: Warning, intense sweetness ahead.
Prefer reading it on AO3?
The faint sound of his alarm clock stirred Denali from his slumber, and he groaned, feeling around for his alarm clock. He really needed to remember to turn it off during the weekends. Sighing sleepily, he turned around only to come face to face with a sleeping Rosé. Denali froze, conscious of the fact that the other boy was still asleep and that they were almost nose to nose. Denali gulped and scooted back a little and turned away from the older boy.
Why was Rosé in his bed? Still drowsy from sleep, Denali wracked his brain for a minute before recalling his meltdown from last night. The little meltdown that had been the result of realising that he just might be catching feelings for his best friend and temporary boyfriend.
And Rosé had been right there for him, never pushing, always patient, just offering him comfort and support. The perfect epitome of a best friend.
And boyfriend.
Why did Rosé have to be so god damn perfect at everything he did?
Before he could even begin to overthink everything again, Denali felt arms snaking around his waist and pull him towards a warm and solid chest.
“Good morning, baby.”
His heart thumped at the affectionate term, his cheeks flushing. He’d heard Rosé call him that a thousand times, but to be lying in bed, in his arms, and have him say it in that deep, sleep husky voice of his? That just hit differently. He squirmed when he felt the older boy nuzzle his neck affectionately, warmth pooling in his belly at how clingy and affectionate Rosé was in the morning. Turning his head to look at Rosé, his heart thumped even harder when he saw the abject fondness in Rosé’s sleepy eyes, and he couldn’t help but smile in response.
“Good morning, Rosie.”
Rosé smiled back as he took in the younger boy’s face, and he stroked Denali’s cheek with his forefinger. “There’s the blush that I know and love.”
Denali bit the inside of his cheeks in an attempt to stop them from flushing even more, slightly embarrassed at how susceptible he still was to blushing. He thought that he had finally overcome that problem when it came to Rosé’s advances, but it looks like that wasn’t the case. Denali turned his head away when he realised how hot his cheeks felt, and Rosé chuckled at the younger boy’s attempt to hide away.
“No no Nali, don’t hide your adorable face from me. Come here.”
The younger boy whined at that, burying his face in his hands immediately when Rosé tried to turn him around, not wanting to give in to his teasing.
Why did the older boy have to have such an effect on him?
“Go away Rosie, you’re annoying.”
Rosé’s whole body shook in his attempt to smother his laughter and the fondness that was rising in his chest. When his attempts to turn Denali to face him failed, Rosé proceeded to climb on top of him, straddling his waist. Taking hold of Denali’s wrists, Rosé pried Denali’s hands part and grinned down at his blushing face.
“Hey there, my cute little boyfriend.”
Denali pouted, just a little ruffled. “I am not cute.” He didn’t really like being called cute, though for some reason when Rosé said it, he found that he didn’t really mind it. Of course, he wasn’t about to let the older boy know that. Then again, Rosé could probably get way with just about anything with him. Denali stuck his tongue out at Rosé and made a face, as if to prove his point. It backfired and instead caused Rosé to laugh, the fondness in his eyes growing before a familiar look took over.
Oh no, Denali knew that look. It was a look he was very much familiar with.
“Rosé, don’t you fucking dare- ROSIE!”
Denali choked out a laugh and struggled to escape from beneath the older boy when Rosé began to attack his sides with his fingers, squirming as he tried to dodge his tickles. “Ro- Rosie, stop it!”
“Say please.”
“Pl- Please... Stop being a brat!”
Stopping for a second to gasp in mock hurt, Rosé resumed to tickle the younger boy.
“Just for that, I’m not going stop until you agree to give me a morning kiss.”
“That’s. Not. Fair.”
“Well?”
Denali tried to control his laughter, but his sides spasmed as Rosé relentlessly attacked his sides.
“Fi- Fine! Okay!”
Rosé stopped once Denali conceded, smiling triumphantly as the younger boy panted, trying to catch his breath. God, was his boyfriend evil.
“I’m waiting for my kiss, boyfriend.”
Rolling his eyes, Denali pushed himself up so that he was level with Rosé and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek, ignoring how his heart skipped a beat and how he sort of liked the feeling of Rosé’s morning stubble tickling his lips. The older boy grinned and turned his face, tapping his other cheek. “The other one too.”
“You said a kiss, meaning only one.”
“I changed my mind, I want one on each cheek now.”
Rolling his eyes at the boy’s childish antics, Denali leaned forward again, pressing a kiss to Rosé’s other cheek and pulled away, biting back a smile. “You happy now?” Denali asked. The older boy turned to look at Denali, eyes warm as he leaned forward and pressed a kiss of his own to Denali’s left cheek, then right.
“Now I am. Now come on, it’s time for our date.” Denali raised his eyebrows as Rosé got out of bed, stretching his back once he was out. “Date? But it’s only 9am.” Also, this was the first time Rosé had explicitly used the word date. Usually, he’d just bring Denali out or suggest things. What did Rosé have in mind this time?
“Well yeah, the drive is going to take an hour or two, so if you want to have lunch on time, you better get your butt out of bed.”
“Drive?”
————————————————————————
Turns out there was a carnival set up just at the outskirts of town, and Rosé had thought that it was the perfect place to bring Denali for a weekend date. He also made sure to call it a date this time so that his intentions were loud and clear from the get go, something he hadn’t done the past few times they had gone out. Despite Denali at first whining about having to get out of bed on a Saturday morning and dragging his feet, the drive had gone off without a hitch.
At first, Rosé hadn’t want to tell Denali where he was taking him to, but had relented once he caught sight of the younger’s wide pleading eyes and dimples. He knew that he was doomed to always be charmed by Denali, a curse he was willing to bear for the rest of his life if he could have the boy all to himself. When Denali had found out where they were going, he had squealed in excitement and started to talk about all the things they could do together, while Rosé had nodded along to everything he said.
By the time they neared their destination, it was just past noon. It was little too hot to be walking around under the sun when it was at its peak, so being the ever gracious boyfriend, Rosé had made sure to drive them both to a nearby diner for lunch. The place had been packed with other locals who had the same idea as Rosé, but thankfully they had managed to get a table. They had both decided to share a BLT sandwich and fries, as well as a large milkshake, not wanting to fill up too much before hitting the carnival. Finishing up their food in record time, they both piled back into the car and they had driven the last 30 minutes there.
Once there, Denali was buzzing with energy and excitement as he dragged Rosé from stall to stall, eyeing each booth filled with stuffed animals that he was itching to win. Rosé didn’t say anything, and was instead content with just watching the younger boy bounce around, and relishing in the fact that Denali hadn’t once let go of his hand after they’d left the car. Denali had stopped at one of the booths and turned to Rosé, puppy eyes coming out as he looked at him.
“Rosie, can we try a few games? I want to try winning some prizes.” Rosé shook his head, much to the younger’s disappointment. “Maybe later baby. I don’t think you’d want to have your hands full when you’re sitting in the rides, would you?” Denali contemplated his point for a moment, before nodding. “You’re right, let’s go for the rides first, then hit the games!”
Denali dragged him over to the nearest ride, and all Rosé could do was let himself be led by the boy he loved so much.
They spent the next few hours going on almost every ride, from the tilt-a-whirl to bumper cars and the roller coasters. By the time were done trying out most of the rides, they were both a little tired out. They sat on one of the benches to rest, fanning themselves as best as they could with their hands in the late afternoon heat.
“Hey Rosie, stay here, I’ll be right back.”
Rosé nodded, not questioning Denali as he wandered off. He came back within 10 minutes, his arms loaded with a few carnival snacks and cold slushies. He spread out the food on the bench and passed the icy drink to Rosé, much to the older boy’s relief. Denali was happily pulling at a funnel cake with his fingers and popping the sugary treat in his mouth. When Rosé set the drink down on the bench, Denali tore off a piece of the funnel cake and held it out to the older boy. “Try this Rosie, it’s really good and it’s still warm.”
The older boy looked at the piece Denali held between fingers. He figured that Denali was expecting him to just take it with his own fingers, but he chose to lean forward and slowly take it with his mouth instead, his eyes never leaving Denali’s, his lips grazing the younger’s fingers as he did so. Rosé pulled back and chewed as he watched Denali’s expression morph from an innocent smile to a stunned one.
Rosé may be a patient man, but that didn’t meant he wasn’t going to play dirty.
He winked at Denali as he swallowed.
“You’re right, baby. That is good.”
The younger boy nodded dumbly and went back to his funnel cake, Rosé chuckling under his breath as he took another sip of his slushie.
Denali’s cheeks weren’t pink, but his ears sure were.
————————————————————————
It was well into the evening by the time the two of them were done with the game stalls in the carnival. The two had predictably been competitive in trying to see who could win the most prizes. That was something that hadn’t changed despite their change in relationship status, the competitive streak that they both had. By the time they had finished up at the last stall, both their arms had been overloaded with stuffed toys of all shapes, sizes and colours. They had laughed at each other, and Denali had proclaimed it was a tie. They’d gotten a passerby to take a photo of the two of them holding all the prizes that they’d won together before giving out almost of them to the kids at the carnival, knowing that neither of them would want to keep them all anyways. In the end, Rosé had been left with a stuffed pink teddy bear and Denali a large multicoloured quetzal plushie.
Knowing that there were fireworks happening soon, Rosé tugged Denali towards the large ferris wheel in the middle of the carnival grounds. They’d gotten into the cab and were sitting in a comfortable silence as the cab slowly moved up. Denali was looking out the glass window, eyes reflecting the bright colourful lights beneath them, his face full of innocent wonder. Rosé couldn’t believe how lucky he was to even be able to be in this position where this beautiful boy was his, even for just a short time.
He knew he had offered to be Denali’s temporary boyfriend for a month, but deep inside, he was hoping that it wouldn’t end once their month was up. He didn’t know how he was going to let go of Denali, and whether he even wanted to. As he continued watching the boy with a wistful expression, he resolved that he would do whatever it took to keep him. He could tell that whatever that they had now was developing beyond platonic feelings, and he could see it in the way Denali was reacting to every advance he made. Rosé hadn’t meant for it to go the way that it did, and he had originally wanted to give him up once their month was up. But now that he’d had a taste, he didn’t want to let him go.
Rosé wanted to be able to call Denali his forever.
Denali turned to him, eyes soft and dimples showing. “Thank you Rosé, for everything.”
He swallowed, entranced by Denali’s expression, and nodded as he smiled back. “Anything for you, Denali.” Carefully moving to sit next to him, Rosé brushed a stray lock of hair back into place, causing Denali to suck in a breath.
The air started to feel charged between them, and Denali shifted in his seat, eyes falling to his lap as he hugged the plushie in his arms, suddenly feeling shy at the look Rosé was giving him. There was a beat of silence before he felt calloused fingers tilt his head up, and his brown eyes connected with warm hazel ones. Rosé held his gaze before he leaned forward, stopping just a centimetre away from Denali, as if asking for permission. Blinking slowly, Denali licked his lips, causing Rosé’s eyes to dart down as his tongue flicked out. Looking back into Denali’s eyes, Rosé tilted his head and leaned forward pausing one final second to give Denali a chance to back away, before finally pressing their lips together in a soft kiss.
In that moment, it was as if the missing piece had slid into the puzzle, and everything just felt right.
————————————————————————
Looks like Rosé's finally made up his mind on what he wants, and it looks like Denali might be leaning into it? Who knows.
I really hope this chapter was worth the wait, especially with how it ended. If any of you get cavities, it wasn't me!

one day...
Hi, y’all! Sorry there’s been such a delay for Chapter 2. I’ve been super busy with school and dance and other activities and all that. Also, I decided about halfway through my original Chapter 2 that I was going to alternate between Virgil and Roman’s perspectives so I had to start a new chapter from scratch. But that means that now-Chapter 3 has already been started, so hopefully I’ll have it done by Friday this week!
A Sander Sides high school AU

Warnings: Some cursing and quick mentions of a possible fight/hospital. If you notice anything else, let me know!
Word Count: 1,919
anyway, here it is!

CHAPTER TWO
Roman Princeford is absolutely, completely, terribly humiliated.
He can’t stop blushing in embarrassment, and it only makes it worse when the classes are boring and he can't stop his mind from drifting to that morning. Like now, for example.
Stupid, stupid Roman, he chastises himself. Why didn’t you notice him there, you oblivious dumbass?
He groans and buries his head in his hands.
“Is something wrong, Roman?” the math teacher asks. “Do you need help?” Yes, but not the help you can give me, Roman thinks. He takes a breath and fixes a dazzling smile on.
“No, Mrs. Perry, I’m doing fine! Thank you for your offer of assistance, however!” he exclaims in his usual lyrical way. Roman always makes an effort to seem like he’s reading off a script, especially one where there’s a heroic prince he can play. It always makes him feel better when he plays a part. Then, Roman can imagine that he is the character. The same qualities, traits, life, everything.
He can ignore how stupid he is and pretend he’s a brave, dashing prince. The princes in stories would never have the problems Roman’s been having.
Mrs. Perry walks off, rolling her eyes, not without fondness, and Roman turns back to his math. Shoving his mind out of fantasy, he tries to solve the problems. It seems like he’s gotten nowhere by the time the bell rings. Throwing his paper into his bag, he hurries out of the room.
“Heya, Roman!” Patton Hart, his best friend, calls through the throng of people. Roman slows down so Patton can catch up. “How ya doing?”
“Uhh, Patton, I am a disaster!” Roman proclaims. “You’ll never guess what happened this morning!”
“Oh no! What did you do this time?” Patton asks jokingly as they enter the classroom. History is one of the few classes they have together, so they always walk from fifth period there.
“I was telling a story, a great one, mind you, and knocked over a poor, innocent student!” Roman throws down his bag next to his seat and plops into the hard plastic chair. “I didn’t mean to, I swear. But that wasn’t the worst part. The worst part was who I hit!” Pausing for dramatic effect, Roman finishes, “It was Virgil! I knocked over Virgil Tempest!”
Patton’s mouth forms a small ‘o’. He starts to laugh, but after seeing how embarrassed Roman is, he stops and places a hand on his shoulder. “What did he say?”
“Nothing much. Just some mumble-jumble. But now I can’t stop thinking about him! I didn’t get a single thing done in math! It’s terrible, Patton. My entire life is all going to go downhill from here! I’ll become ineligible for the play because I’m failing all my classes! I won’t be able to graduate, and then I’ll have to work.” He shudders. “That’s it! I’m done for. I’ll never accomplish anything!” He collapses back against the chair for dramatic effect. He knows he’s being very extra, but honestly, what else does anyone expect at this point? He’s Roman Princeford, after all.
If only I were the brave, loud, daring person the whole school thinks I am.
“Woah, woah, woah there buddy!” Patton comforts. “I’m sure you’ll do fine. You aren’t going to fail high school. You just gotta tell him how you feel! Then you won’t have to worry about it anymore!”
Roman looks at Patton in shock.
“Tell him how I feel?” Patton nods, encouraging. Roman sits back up. “And make a fool of myself yet again? No thank you! He hates me, you know that! I’d be better off flunking high school! How could I look into those beautiful brown eyes in that beautiful face and tell him I had a crush on him! Impossible, I say! Impossible!” He throws out his hands, but then remembers that the exact same movement started this whole thing. Quickly, his hands fall back to his sides.
Patton chuckles. “It’s not as hard as you think, Ro-ro! You’ll do great. And I’m sure he doesn’t hate you.” Roman sighs. “Hey, why don’t you—”
“Boys in the back,” the history teacher says, shooting a look at Roman and Patton, “it’s time for class. Pay attention please.” They both nod at turn away from each other and towards the board.
Roman doesn’t pay attention to a single word of the lecture. All he can think about is Virgil’s freckles and his eyes and his lips and his laugh, which Roman had only heard briefly while walking past him but loved nonetheless. How come I’ve never noticed that Virgil had freckles before? he wonders. Goddammit, is that boy just going to keep getting more and more amazing?
Roman chuckles to himself, thinking, Oh my god, I’m so gay. Deciding he should probably start listening to what the teacher is saying, he shoves any and all thoughts of Virgil from his mind and fills the gaps with information about the buildup to World War 1.
After class, Patton rushes up to him. He pulls Roman to the side of the hallway in a little nook where the row of lockers end.
“After school, you should come with me to this coffee shop,” Patton says, a little smile on his face. Roman knows that smile. He’s up to no good.
“Why?” His voice rises with suspicion at the end of the word.
“My lab partner, Logan Wise, you know him, said that we should meet up to work on our project after school.” A blush rises to Patton’s cheeks causing Roman to smirk as he figures it out.
“Someone’s got a cru-ush,” Roman teases, voice sing-songy and laughing.
“That’s not the point,” Patton says, blushing even harder.
“Fine.” Roman lowers his voice to a whisper. “But you can’t hide it from me. I’m the love whisperer, remember?” Throughout their years of high school, Roman had been responsible for setting up many couples. It’s gotten to a point where almost every day, he has someone walk up to him, asking him to help set them up with whoever their crush happens to be.
“Well, maybe I have a crush, but so do you. And you do know who Logan’s best friend is, right?” Patton responds, that same mischievous smile. Roman chuckles, looking around in a fond mix of exasperation and amusement.
“Virgil,” he finally says. Patton’s smile grows wider. “Look, I told you. I can’t talk to him. I’ll just make a fool of myself!”
“Fine,” Patton says. “Suit yourself.” He pats Roman on the shoulder and starts to walk away. Before he’s completely out of sight, he turns and yells, “Just think about it, okay?” Roman rolls his eyes at his friend’s shameless attempts to set him up and heads to choir.
------------------
Slinging his bag over his shoulder, Roman shuts his locker with a bang. He joins the flood of people heading towards the front doors. He spills out of the school and heads towards his car. Once he’s only a few yards away, he unlocks the doors and dumps his things inside the passenger door. After waving to a few other kids on their way out that he knows, he gets into the driver’s side.
Alone, finally, Roman allows himself to drop the fake smile. Ugh, you goddamn idiot. How did you not notice him there? Now he hates you even more. Good going, Roman! Love whisperer, yeah right.
If only I could just talk to him…
Shoving his embarrassment and frustration aside, he starts the car and pulls out of the school, heading home. His route home winds its way through the downtown streets. Roman is so used to driving the same streets, he’s startled to notice something unordinary.
A few cars ahead of him is Patton’s silver car. What is he doing over here? Patton lives on the opposite side of downtown as Roman, and while the town is relatively small, it’s still strange. Roman is sure he’s never seen Patton drive this way home before.
Turning onto 4th Street, Roman watches Patton, now directly ahead of him, park in an open spot in front of one of the little shops lining the street. The sign above says “The Sanders Cafe” in swirly cursive lettering. A decal of a little cupcake sitting next to a cup of coffee accompanies it.
Oh, right, Roman remembers. Patton and Logan were meeting up to work on their chemistry thingy.
And Virgil is probably going to be there. No matter how much he tries to block the thought, it still shows up. Roman has tried to get Virgil out of his mind, but it never works. He always pops up when Roman least expects it. Frankly, Roman finds it quite frustrating.
Lost in thought, Roman turns one intersection too early. “I guess I’ll just go around the block,” he sighs. It had been a long day, and he was looking forward to crashing when he got home. The detour would only cost about 5 minutes but still. Annoying.
Roman’s phone buzzes in the center console while he’s waiting to turn back onto 4th Street, the one with the cafe on it. One quick glance down at it tells Roman it’s from Patton. Checking the road to make sure he has the time, he looks back to read what it says.
“Patton…” he groans.
“I think you should come to the cafe with me. I’m waiting outside. Just give it a chance, kiddo!” reads the text message. However much Roman would like to deny it, he does want to go with Patton. On impulse, he finds a parking spot and pulls in. Patton is parked a few spots down, still sitting in his car. He hasn’t noticed Roman yet, and Roman’s glad for that.
“Come on, Roman,” he says, trying to give himself a pep talk. “Think about what a prince would do. He’d charge in there without a second thought. It wouldn’t matter what would happen because it would be in the name of love. You got this. What’s the worst that could happen, besides Virgil hating the sight of you so much he instantly fights you the second he sees you and you lose and have to go to the hospital and become the laughing stock of the school because while under anesthesia you admit your feelings for Virgil and now everyone knows and—”
A knock on the driver’s side window cuts Roman’s worrying off. When Roman looks up, he sees Patton’s grinning face. The other boy waves enthusiastically and gives him a thumbs up.
You got this. Be a prince, Roman. It’s in your name, after all. Taking a deep breath and clenching his fists in determination, Roman grabs his phone off the console and double checks to make sure he has his wallet.
Patton practically assaults him the moment he steps outside the car, talking in a rapid stream of words, but Roman can’t hear anything over the ever-increasing beating of his heart. They walk up to the front door, Patton ahead of Roman, still rambling about something from foods class.
The moment they walk in, the little silver bell dinging above them, Roman forgets all his worries because there Virgil is, sitting in a booth with another boy, — Logan, probably — his hair falling in front of his face, teeth gnawing on his lip in concentration and Oh god, that boy is beautiful.
And then Virgil looks up at them, and Roman swears he can feel his heart drop all the way to the ground.

Night | Rehearsal
Theatre!AU; a look into a normal night in the drama club
Prompt: Night
Word count: 1668
***
“Robin!” her name echoed across the auditorium as a familiar blonde bounced over, damp hair escaping from its haphazardly tied scrunchy. She was still in her swim suit too, the spandex peeking out from her open sweater and tucked into her school sweats. She had obviously been in a hurry to leave, which made sense when Robin looked behind her.
“Hey, Sam,” she nodded at the boy who was trailing after her, looking amusing, “Connor, you’re late.”
“So is Sam,” he furrowed his eyebrows at the teasing remark, “It's not my fault I had to drive down to the pool to pick someone up because she missed the bus.”
“I had practice!” Sam argued as she dropped her gym bag on the stage, it's familiar cross-stitch motifs making Robin smile. She had gotten her best friend a new duffel bag for Christmas that year, since her old one was falling apart from years of damp swimsuits and piles of theatre costumes. She had taken the time to stitch little things into the black fabric, including little bees and flowers that she thought would make Sam smile. It had and it never ceased to make Robin happy too when she saw how practical yet meaningful her gift had turned out to be.
“Still,” Robin nudged Connor’s shoulder, “Now we know why I’m the president of the club and you two aren’t.”
“We are literally co-presidents, Ro,” Connor’s reminder made her laugh; as if he would ever let her forget that. They had helped rebuild the dying drama club in their first year of high school, bringing in more students and assisting their teacher with planning and fundraisers. Sam joined along the way, quickly becoming their friend with her headstrong disposition and bold ideas. It had always been the three of them, for years, and now that they were in senior year everything had started to feel a bit bittersweet.
Robin tried to not let it get to her, though, because graduation wouldn’t tear them apart. Her and Connor had the same dream, Broadway, and they had made a pact years ago to hold each other to it. Every audition, every show, and even every mess up and meltdown was done with the other there to support and help. Even when things got hard they were in it together, no way would one bad audition or anything ruin their chances at the best schools or roles.
Sam was there for fun, mostly. She was a good actress, easily immersed into any role she was given and ready to take the lead in activities. She was an athlete first and foremost, though, and that hadn’t changed much. She had her dreams set on olympic coaching since the beginning, yet joined the drama club because their counselor thought it would help her with team building. It did, for sure, and while Sam never changed her mind on her dream profession, she had made a lot of friends and found a certain love for musicals along the way.
“What’s the plan for tonight?” Sam asked once they all settled down a little, taking a seat beside her on the stage. Robin glanced at the clock across the room, noting that it was almost half-past six. She had stayed after school to run lines by herself and get a head start on some set design. The second semester had just begun and that meant the spring arts showcase was fast approaching, which meant the drama club was scrambling to start preparations for a show. Auditions had taken place only the week prior, which had Robin practicing painstakingly so she could secure the main role. It was, after all, her last year in the club; she ought to make a lasting impact.
“Rehearsal, on book still,” she replied, fidgeting with the worn corner of her script book. She had a lot of nervous energy fizzling beneath her confident exterior and unfortunately she wasn’t all too good at hiding it. Not from her friends, anyway, because Connor’s hand reached out to cease her worrying of the book’s fragile pages almost as quickly as they started.
“It’s only the second week,” he reminded her, “Of course we’re still on book. We’ll have it memorized soon enough, Robin, be patient.”
“I know.”
“We’re already ahead of schedule with costuming and props,” the blonde across from them added cheerfully, “Plus we can come in during lunch hour and get things done if we really wanted. I’m sure I could rope some of the freshman into helping paint and stuff.”
“And by that you mean bribe the kids into doing the grunt work.”
Faking a gasp, Sam glared at Connor a little, “How dare you accuse me of such manipulation.”
“Dramatic,” he stage-whispered to Robin, who was shaking her head at the whole thing. The two never stopped bickering but it was how they showed affection, even if they did butt heads sometimes. Between the three of them there was a lot of attitude and maybe a little too much ego in the room, if Robin was to be honest, so this was commonplace. It was all in good fun, though, and they had never actually had a proper falling out despite the lighthearted arguing.
“That’s kind of the point, Rhodes.”
Before any more non-club related dramatics could be had, their teacher walked into the auditorium. Tanya Hanes was a rather eccentric woman, with a never ending supply of anecdotes and interesting fashion choices, though Robin assumed that kind of came with the job description. What was a little odd, though, was the girl trailing behind Ms. Hanes.
She was only vaguely familiar to Robin, probably from one of her AP classes if she had to guess. The girl had her dark blonde hair in a meticulous half ponytail, leaving her sharp features unshadowed. She didn’t make eye contact with anyone, instead looking around the auditorium as if she was searching for anything to keep her occupied. Her beat-up red converse squeaked against the ugly tile floor as she stumbled a little over an extension cord, muttering something as she regained her balance.
“Everyone,” Ms. Hanes’ voice echoed through the large room, bringing everyone’s attention to her down near the front of the stage. She waited a few moments for the younger students to calm down from whatever they were messing with in the props area, waving them over until she deemed it quiet enough to continue.
“We have a new student joining us for this semester,” Ms. Hanes explained as she gestured to the blonde behind her, “She will be here to assist with any technical or set related work, as well as line prompting and costuming.”
There was a chorus of welcomes and hellos, Robin noticing the way the girl relaxed a bit at that. She was glad the drama club were relatively friendly people, since the comforting atmosphere managed to make new kids feel at ease.
“Care to introduce yourself, dear?”
“Uh… yeah. Ava Bekker,” her voice was lower than expected, laced with a pretty accent that seemed to catch everyone’s interest, “Nice to meet you all, I guess.”
“Robin, Connor, since you two are our presidents would you mind helping Ava become acquainted and set up with some jobs?”
“Hey! Don’t forget me,” Sam put on a little pout, obviously in the mood to joke around. She never wanted a leadership position in the club, since she already had that in her sports and didn’t want to take away from her best friends’ thing. Still, she liked to be included, though it was just assumed she would do whatever Robin and Connor did anyway.
“Of course, Samantha,” the teacher laughed, “But don’t terrorize her, now.”
Scrunching her nose at the use of her full name, Sam just nodded, “Wouldn’t dream of it.”
After letting people know they would start practice as soon as their presidents got things sorted, Ms. Hanes went off to talk to some students. Taking that as their cue to go properly greet the new girl, Sam was the first to hop off the stage to meet Ava near the stairs. The blonde looked a little startled at her energy but offered her a polite smile regardless, holding out her hand to shake.
“Call me Sam,” she said happily, “Welcome to Hell.”
“Sammy,” Robin sighed and lightly hit her shoulder as she came up behind her, “Don’t do that.”
“I’m only teasing, Ro,” Sam replied coolly, “Newbie, meet the Queen of Hell herself.”
“Please,” Robin’s incredulous look only made her laugh, which had her best friend sighing yet again. She turned her attention to Ava, relieved to see that the other girl only looked amused at the antics.
“I’m Robin,” she said with a smile she hoped was reassuring, “I promise Sam will calm down once she stops showing off.”
“I don’t mind, at least one of us has the energy,” Ava replied, though her tone was a little guarded. She was nervous, that was obvious, and the other girl just hoped she would become more comfortable once she got acquainted with everyone. She still offered Robin a handshake too, which was an amusingly formal gesture for students around there.
“Well, I can show you backstage and get you set up with a script and some jobs to do, if you’d like.”
“Uh, yeah, sure,” Ava nodded and the smile she gave Robin just about melted her heart. It was the first genuine look the blonde had had since coming into the auditorium and it was sweeter than that ridiculous starbucks drink Connor was always carrying around. She was just as pretty as her smile, that was glaringly obvious, and Robin would be a fool to say otherwise. Not one to be shy very often, she recovered quickly and had no qualms about offering her hand to Ava, a smile of her own settling on her face when the other girl took it cautiously.
“C’mon then, Ava,” Robin replied as she tried to ignore Sam’s pointed look she saw in her peripheral, “I’ll introduce you to some people first.”

A/N: Okay so, this is my first bullet scenario thing? and its weird...like this is so weird but I tried XD it ended up this weird mix between bullet scenario and oneshot fic and i-
...............all I can do is practice and try to get better but yeah. SO HERES THIS :D (im srry don hate me T-T)
-Finding Your Best Friend-
this bb would be the best-est friend you would have in this world
probably why you fell for him in the first place, but let's not get to ahead of ourselves
you guys met freshman year of high school
your guys' mutual friend Yunho is really the reason why
you just moved to town, and since said town was small, it was clear to you that everybody knew everybody else
you felt pretty lonely on the first day because of that
second day of freshman year is where is all started to come together
you were looking for a nice spot to sit and have your lunch outside because you didn't want to look like the weird loner person eating by themselves in silence
you found a pretty spot under a big tree near the track field, you put a random cool cake making tutorial on your phone and ate your lunch
the video was at a part where they were placing intricate designs in frosting all over the cake when you hear "Whoa, that is so cool!"
you jump about 3 feet in the air and immediately gather up your phone and get up to spin around to see who interrupted your quiet time
a young man, not sure his grade, with peach colored hair and a worried expression on his face, raises his hands in a surrender pose
'okay but what the hell was he doing, watching my phone behind the tree?'
well reader, we'll never know
"I'm really sorry! I didn't mean to scare you that bad! Really, I am so so so sorry!"
you, still in shock, just nod at him
now you're both just standing in front of each other
not saying anything
....well
this is awkward
"I-I'm Yunho...by the way."
you clear your throat, not sure why, nervous habit
"[Y/N].."
"So, uh... Haven't seen you around here before.."
once you explained you were new, and new to the town in general. There was no escape.
you were now best friends with the giant teddy bear and there was nothing you could do about it
yunho immediately took you under his wing and showed you around the campus. Then the town itself after school was out.
but Ro this seems to be turning into a yunho x reader fic/ bullet scenario
stfu I'm getting there
what did this turn into even
so now you and Yunho are bffs
enter giant teddy bear 2.0
you and yunho are hanging out at lunch, it's become a usual for the past two weeks
and Yunhos other bff is becoming sus about why Yunho hasn't been eating with him at lunch or doesn't seem to have as much time after school for him
that's when giant teddy bear 2.0 (if you don't know that its Mingi then idek-) finds his bestie with some random chick
a really adorable random chick
"So this is where you have been?"
you and Yunho start, not expecting someone to find your guys' spot
Also, deja vu, amiright?
"Oh, hey Mingi!" Yunho greets the tall dirty blonde haired teddy bear
And you're totally not sitting there thinking, 'holy shit, he is...wow.'
and that's how it all started
he stayed and introduced himself and you hit it off just as well as you and yunho did
maybe even better..
he started showing up everyday, at the what was dubbed 'The Cool Kids Spot™️' by you all, with yunho
even tho we all know you guys were NOT the cool kids
then it went to him being at the spot before everyone showed up
so he could see you first
then it turned into him meeting you up after class so you both could grab your food together and meet up Yunho at The Spot™️
before you could even realize it, he became your person
you were the first person he ran up to and hugged after him and Yunhos dance group took home 1st place at a competition
he was the first person you called when you were told that your poem won an award
you were the person he'd come to if he needed any kind of advice
and he was the first person you went to if you needed to get out of your head or your anxiety was getting to you
the high school years went by so fast
a lot changed
but what never changed was Mingi, he may have grown
and damn he grew
but he was your constant (and yes, yunho too, we can't forget yunho bro)
-Knowing They're The One-
high school came and went
Mingi and Yunho were accepted by a prestigious performing arts school
you, however, were going to just a regular college
luckily, both schools weren't terribly far from each other
which is why, instead of suffering in dorms, you and Mingi decided to get a apartment together, not far from both schools
yunhos ass stayed with his parents because they live like right next to the school, lucky hoe
you all still make time for each other
but you and Mingi prefer to stay in, order takeout and watch random stuff on YouTube
whenever you or Mingi went out it was always together (unless it was classes)
Grocery shopping? Together. Doctors appointment? Together. Girls night? Together. Guys night? Together.
"So, you must be suffering right now" his friend Yeosang said to him on a rare guys night that didn't involve you.
Mingi looked at Yeosang perplexed, ignoring whatever Wooyoung was talking to him about
"What are you talking about?"
"You and [Y/N] are literally always together, the fact she isn't here surprises me."
Mingi laughed. "We're not always together."
A cacophony of "LIES" and "BULLSHIT" filled the air as all of Mingi friends called him out on his bullshit
Mingi could feel his face heating up
"W-well, so what if we are! Were best friends AND roommates."
"And lovers~" his friend San whispered in his ear from behind and laughed, dancing away before Mingi could hit him
"We're not together!" Mingi exclaimed, rolling his eyes.
"But you want to be."
Mingi turned to look at the owner of the voice. It was Yunho, leaning against the entrance of the kitchen everyone was gathered in
He was looking at Mingi with a smirk
Mingi knew Yunho knew how he felt about you
and not because he told him
well...he kinda did
FLASHBACK TIME
it was your guys' high school graduation
more specifically, the night of, and you were all partying and yunhos house
celebrating the fact that you all were officially adults now
lol you thought
and what better way to celebrate that than with underage drinking
be safe kids, don't drink irresponsibly
and Mingi. Got. Wasted.
by the end of the night, he was crying (and maybe puked once or twice...) in Yunhos arms about how beautiful you were, and how amazing and talented you were
wouldn't shut up about how soft and perfect you feel in his arms when he hugs you or vice versa
"She is my soulmate." After every other sentence mentioning how perfect you are
but wait, where were you while Mingi was crying and puking you ask?
That night you met Yeonjun, who is now one of your closest friends
at first, a friend of Wooyoungs, who you all became friends with junior year, along with his best friend San
Yeonjun, who went to a different school across town, was invited along by Woo and San
you and Yeonjun hit it off so well, drinking and laughing, and talking about how much he loves his boyfriend Soobin, and maybe you drunkingly going on about how amazing Mingi is
however, Mingi didn't know Yeonjun
and what he saw that night was you, enjoying your time with someone who wasn’t him, laughing at jokes that weren't his, hanging all over someone who could never know you as well as he did (and that totally wasn't the reason that Mingi drank like 2 bottles of straight vodka, not at all)
and at that moment
he knew
he fucked up
he was in love with you
OKAY END OF FLASHBACK
Mingi wasn't sure what to say
he could deny it sure, but he knew it was useless
not after every person in the room gave him a knowing smirk after Yunhos comment
“She doesn't-”
“Oh, whatever. you guys are literally already a couple. And dont even try to deny that. If she was here right now, she’d probably be on your lap and you two would be sitting in some corner of the house whispering some weird drunk lovey shit to each other.”
well...
Mingi really didn't have a argument for that
that night he came home sober
but you didn't know that until months later when he told you he wasn't actually drunk
anyways when he got home you were sitting in the living room
music playing away on YouTube while you type away on your laptop
you didn't hear him come in, softly singing along to the song under your breath
he stood there for a moment and just..looked at you
your hair was a mess
you had on the same clothes as yesterday
probably haven't done a skincare routine in months
you were the most beautiful person he had ever seen in his life
he felt so much love swell in his chest
hes known it for a while now but at that moment all that was going on in his head was
“That’s my soulmate. I love her. I love her so much.”
“Hey.”
he wasn't sure if he had said it loud enough but apparently he had because you flinched and turned to see who the ‘intruder’ was
“Oh, Mingi! Shit, you scared me...” you laughed. “How was guys night?”
He made his was over to sit on the couch as you told him how your paper was coming along and then waited for him to answer your question
he sat for a good minute not saying anything
“Mingi?”
he looked at you
“you okay hun?” you asked, placing your hand on his cheek
and then he kissed you
it was so quick, you had no time to register that it was happening at all
and he left just as quickly
slamming the door to his bedroom and leaving you flustered and panicked
-So....Lovers?-
the morning after the kiss was the most awkward moment that you and Mingi had ever had
luckily it didn't last long at all
you two were silent, awkwardly making breakfast
then Mingi busted out with “Man, I’m so hungover! I barely remember anything from last night!”
“Do...do you remember anything from when you came home?”
“No, to be honest, I don't even remember coming home...”
-cue forced laughter-
-cue Mingi not trying to be disappointed when you looked relieved-
he asked you if anything happened and tried not to feel sad about the fact you were going on about how nothing happened and he just came home and went to bed
why wouldn't you mention the kiss? maybe everyone had it wrong, you didn't feel the same. why else would you avoid it?
but everything went back to...normal
you two would cuddle every night on the couch
you showed up to every guys night like usual
(there may or may not have been more knowing smirks thrown Mingis way)
he showed up to the rare girls nights you'd have with your (like 2) girlfriends
(they literally just consisted of everyone chilling in some secluded spot and sparking up a blunt or two and bull-shittng)
but everything wasn't normal
because even though it lasted 0.0002 seconds long
Mingi cannot stop thinking about that kiss
neither can you for that matter
that's when you confided in your bestie Yeonjun
who knew all about your love for your other bestie
you went to Yeonjuns one Saturday afternoon without mingi
its been a month since the kiss and Yeonjun is only disappointed in the fact that you didn't tell him sooner
his solution was simple, just tell him how you feel
its so god damn obvious he feels the same
but who are you to do the simple thing right?
so what do you do?
you go with Soobins idea
and :) you:) go:) on:) a:) blind:) date:) with one of soobin and yeonjuns friends:)))))))
well
at least you were supposed to..
the night comes when you were supposed to meet at a nice cafe with their friend Beomgyu
you. were. lookin. FIRE BABY
slaayyyyy
you were in the kitchen grabbing your keys
and maybe prolonging the fact that your going out with someone who isn't MIngi
when Mingi walked out to heat himself up a noodle cup
and maybe one for you too because he didn't think you were going anywhere and was going to ask if you wanted to chill in his room and play mario kart
his jaw DROPPED when he saw you
he felt like he was just kicked in the gut, all breath left his lungs
and he may or may not have gotten an instant boner but-
he cleared his throat to get your attention
“You look...nice.” wow, Mingi, smooth
“O-oh, thanks, um... ill be back later okay?”
when Mingi asked where you'll be going and you said you had a blind date, he swears to this day he blacked out for a moment
next thing he knew he had you pushed against the counter
“Mingi-”
“No.”
“w-what..”
“You don't have a date.”
“But I do-”
then his lips were pressed against yours
and unlike the first, this one lasted a hell of a lot longer than 0.0002 seconds
it wasn't fireworks or butterflies or a sudden realization of unconditional love
it was rough and messy and filled with so many emotions including relief that your love for each other can finally blossom
you didn't say a word to each other when you parted
you stared at each other for a while, panting with big smiles on your faces
once your breathing returned to normal you gently pushed him back so you weren't pressed against the counter anymore
“I’m going to change in PJ's.”
Mingis smile lit up his whole face. “But I thought you had a date..”
“No, I don't.” you kissed his cheek and left to change.
-YES LOVERS FINALLY-
so you guys never really sat down and were like ‘hey so are we...?’
because you both knew you just....were
after that night you guys started acting like you had been dating for months
it was just like before
because of course, like always, Yunho was right
you guys already acted like you were dating
now kisses and a lot more were added to the mix
which just made everything 1000x better
everyone knew it was just a matter of time
you loved waking up to his arms wrapped around your waist and him softly snoring in your ear
he loved waking up to you peppering kisses all over his collar bones and neck
your loved bloomed♡
A/N pt2: Im sorry if the end seems so rushed as well, I started running out of steam and my mind blanked but I didn't want to prolong this and never post it...like i do with everything...
Thank you for reading!

Of Nightmares and Answers
Inspired by @jacquesthepigeon post
I apologize in advance for the long post.
(I suck at titles, sorry)
...
Hawk Moth, Marinette decided, was a jerk with no creativity whatsoever.
She was no villain and the reused ideas made her job considerably easier. An akuma that could travel through screens? Simple, corner them and cut the electricity. One that could fly? That was cake, once she and Chat managed to enclose them. It would get messy, but they always managed.
But this recurring theme of exploiting people's fears was getting pretty messed up pretty quickly. That was just sick.
A year later and she had to deal with Nightmare Adrien once again. At this point it wasn't even scary anymore, so she just simply grabbed him by his shirt and hurled him to the Seine—where he promptly dissolved into a cloud of gliterry smoke so that was enlightening. Marinette knew that it was next to imposible to completely get ros of him, but every second she did not expect subjected to his alphabetized and numerized list of why Kagami was perfect and overall superior than Marinette, was a second she was going to enjoy however short.
Now, she knew there was more to it than a teen crush in that manifestation of her fears, but she wasn't in the mood to stop and think about it too deeply, not when there was an akuma on the loose. Certainly not after.
For Chat Noir his fear was always the same. Condiment, powerlessness. It made her heart break when he showed up late and pale.
Hawk Moth, besides being a boring villain, was a massive jerk and Marinette would punch his teeth out as soon as she got the chance.
“Chat?” she called him, noticing how his eyes got lost.
He shook his head. “I'm fine, I'm fine.” The fact he didn't try cover it with a flirty line or a light-hearted pun spoke for itself.
Yes, Marinette was going to absolutely destroy Hawk Moth. But they had an akuma to catch now, before Paris spiraled down into complete madness. They had already sounded the alarms and many had taken refuge. But there were always stragglers and those found themselves at different levels of panic, sobbing and whimpering and screaming, rocking themselves with their knees pressed to the chest and pulling their hair out.
They had to fix this now.
The only advantage Marinette could think of was that this akuma only seemed to affect people who came into direct contact with her, and that she wasn't as good fighting as she was escaping. It was a tricky, slippery one, but once they cornered her it was over. An ally might have been good, but it was late and she didn't want to expose anyone else to this.
It was one of those akumas.
Suffice to say they didn't even know her name, nor her story. The quiet ones were the most volatile, destructive. Marinette would know.
She simply hoped her Lucky Charm could fix things afterwards, thought she was aware it didn't erase memories.
She sighed, beginning to feel the guilt. As much as Tikki and Chat, and everyone, told her Hakw Moth was the one to blame, she couldn't help the feeling.
That won't help now, thought. So she shook her head and turned to Chat. “Alright, kitten, this is going to be interes—”
A dark laugh cut her off.
They both whirled at the same time, weapons at the ready. There she was, unsettling in her outfit's simplicity. The black suit, the fine-looking cane and the elegant bun at the back of her hair. She seemed like someone they might find on the street. It made her all the more uncomfortable to look at.
“So we meet again,” she said as she gave her a once-over. “I thought I got rid of you, especially you, Chat Noir. You seemed rather distressed in that cage.” He didn't show signs to reply. The akuma clicked her tongue and pursed her lips. “I thought this would be more amusing, but life is so full of disappointments already it shouldn't surprise me.”
She wasted no time in reaching for his pocket and pulling out a fistful of her glittery black dust. She blowed it, two circles forming and smoking between them, swirling and bubbling in unnatural ways. Marinette took a step back as did Chat.
You see, Hawk Moth was a sucker for recycling ideas. But he did know how to twist them just enough to improve them. Where Sandboy had needed to sprinkle his victims, this one simply needed to be in range. People's own fear fed by the dust, the dust fed by people's fear. This was her chance to attack before the dust and smoke took shape.
And she did, but one of the circles shot outwards, into iron bars. Chat lost focus, his pupils contracting. The fear coming off of him was almost palpable.
The akuma hit him with a strength unproper of her appearance, sending him to the ground with a blow to the chest. Marinette worried when he didn't got up immediately. The akuma then proceeded to almost knock her out with a punch to the nose.
There were many things Marinette had done throughout her life, participating in a brawl was not one of them. The hit disoriented her, causing black spots to swarm her vision. She couldn't block the kick to the gut that made her fall.
Stunned, she could only watch the akuma staring down at her. It's over, Marinette thought. But the akuma simple stood there with a cruel intent in her eyes, and left, jumping above the bars before they completely closed.
Marinette wanted to stomp her feet in frustration when her head stopped spinning. She touched her nose, it hurt awfully but she didn't think it was broken. A plan was already forming in her head when she got up. They would have to use Chat's cataclysm first, though, which would only make them lose more time as he would need to recharge adte. Again. In addition to dealing with Nightmare Adrien. Fucking awesome.
She walked up to Chat, who was sitting. She saw the fear reflected in his face as he took in his surroundings, she swore she heard him mutter not again, not again.
“Hey,” Marinette said softly, offering what she hoped was a soothing smile. “Come on, kitten, let's get this over with.”
He took deep breaths before nodding. Marinette offered her hand and he took it. His face remained closed off, as it would be the rest of the day and maybe the rest of the night. She wondered if he'd sleep with his window open, or it he'd sleep at all.
“Cataclysm,” he muttered, the dark energy building up in the pal of his hand.
Marinette often looked away when he summoned his powers. She didn't know when it would stop. Not today, it seemed, as she stared at the humanoid form of her fears.
She readied her yo-yo with a sigh. Earlier, she'd figure it out the more scared someone was, the faster their Nightmares took form. No wonder Chat's had so quickly. Hers was about to, even if she convinced herself that she wasn't afraid of Adrien. That she wasn't terrified of being good enough for him, or for anyone.
She steeled herself as the smoke rippled one last time. But Adrien didn't walk out of it. Not with that white mask and icy mask, not with that twisted, insane, cruel smirk. Her blood chilled, her lip quivered and her yo-yo almost fell from her unsteady hands.
Marinette took a step back as Chat Blanc bared his teeth in way the would have been playful hadn't it been so wicked in its mocking nature. That made him grin wider. “Hello, Marinette.”
He attacked.
...
Marinette never stopped shaking. When she went home her parents didn't about. Her mom only went to make her hot chocolate while her father sat her on his lap, cradling her head like a newborn and running his other hand up and down her back. “Breathe in and out with me, my little one,” he murmured softly.
Marinette tried, she really did, but the shaking never quite left, her heartbeat didn't slow down and when her mom brought her a cup of chocolate, it rattled so much she spilled it onto her dad's pants. “S-Sorry.”
“Shhh, it's okay,” he reassured her. And even when she stopped apologizing, he kept saying it. “It's okay, baby girl.”
It's okay, he said when Marinette wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face on his shoulder, trying to remember what it was like to breathe again.
...
Chat fell like a sack of potatoes on her roof. Well, maybe not like a sack of potatoes, but loudly enough to make Marinette jump out of her skin with a pathetic squeal.
It was him, or it was the worst thief in Paris trying to break in. The latter sounded more inviting than the former, truth to be told. That was the kind of day she'd had.
Marinette turned to Tikki, slightly—very—panicked to what Tikki only gave her an understanding gaze. She could almost hear her gentle words even though her kwami didn't speak. With a sigh and unsteady gait, she climbed the stairs to her bed and then went out to the roof.
The cold wasn't that bad, seeing as the summer was barely leaving, but she wrapped her arms around herself as she stood in front of Chat Noir.
Chat Noir, she repeated in her head.
He swallowed. “It's nice up here,” he said after a moment of silence.
Marinette nodded, coming to stand with her hand on the railing. “I like to come here people-gazing,” she told him. “It... inspires me.”
Chat stood besides her. The glimpse of his bell made her flinch. Golden, she told herself. His bell is golden, his hair is blond, his suit black and his eyes green. He put distance between them, and for that, for that Marinette swore Hawk Moth would pay. One day.
Marinette swallowed her, the lump in her throat obstructing her breathing. “You must have questions,” she sighed.
Chat glanced at her from the corner of his eyes as she did the same. They both went to stare ahead, repulsed like equal poles. “You could say that,” he muttered. “But I wasn't going to make them tonight.”
“What changed?”
“Nothing, I don't expect answers tonight.” Marinette stared him openly now, doubts in her eyes and arched eyebrows. He sighed. “I have... nightmares.”
Well.
She could relate to that.
“About what?”
It was always risky to pry, even thought he only brought something up only when he was ready to discuss it. But today hadn't been a good day, for either of them. He answered anyway.
“My father is a millionaire.”
On other occasion, Marinette would've berates him for revealing that kind of information but... it didn't matter much now, did it?
“He's obsessed with my safety, ironic, given he doesn't give a shit about me,” Chat went on. “The point is my house is a bunker. And since Sandboy I had this dream, where everything is closed and I'm locked in. I don't have plan or my miraculous, there's no way out. But there's this crack in the blinds. I can see everything from it, but I cannot so much as to put a finger out. There's people always other people at the other side and I scream but they never hear me. There's my friends, there's you. But no one ever hears, and I never get out.”
Marinette felt her eyes sting. “You saw Ladybug?” she asked thickly.
“No. I see you.”
A tear escaped her, and then other, and other. She shouldn't say it. She shouldn't tell him.
“Chat,” Marinette whispered, “something terrible happened.”
And yet she did, knowing it was a mistake.

Heyy could I get a matchup please? I’m a pansexual non binary person excepting and loving to all, I have short black hair and I am 5’1. Tbh I’m more interested in the 1A boys but I do love all the pro hero’s and the villains too. I can be shy at first but once you get to know me I can be very chaotic and alt. I’m very open minded and understanding no matter what your situation is and I am very patient, I rarely get angry. I also do a lot of art from pairing to potter and photography, I love to try new things. I also love your work so much and I hope your doing well 💕
Thank you! 🥰 It means a lot! I hope your doing week in this time ☺️💙 sorry it took over a month 😅 but! I’ll make it up to you! And! The other four waiting....and the few in my inbox! Well! I hope you like it!
✨✨✨✨🤍✨✨✨✨🤍✨✨✨✨
✨Denki✨
Kaminari, you wouldn’t think five inches is enough for him to look down and bully you about your height. But...honestly? You couldn’t be mad at it considering it’s what made your friendship with the blonde bloom.
Then again, when you first met him you were kind of a wreck and didn’t have the guts to tell him, “I’m not an arm rest stop leaning on my shoulder.” Instead you let it be, fidgeting fingers and looking ahead until her smiled brightly at you, “SHORT FRIENDS ARE GREAT!” he looked down at you eyes closed, “I should keep you around more.”
Well, after that you were adopted by, THE BAKUSQUAD! Bakugo not really caring, but when Kirishima and Denki followed him around he always made sure to grab you and drag you with them, because “I WAS SCARED AND PANICKED! I DIDN’T WANNA BE ALONE!”
So, for the first and second week he treated you like a quiet kid, mostly starting conversation until you got into a comfortable groove, and he almost died seeing how you really turned out. YOU started to bully him, when he entered his short circuit, the jokes you made, but still, you took care of him making sure he didn’t get into trouble or hurt. At times you’d become a bit impulsive and your chaotic side came out.
“MOVE! IM GONNA DO IT!” You screamed “Y/n! NO! I LIKE YOU BETTER ALIVE!” He screamed. Silence, you moved your head, trying to pull back, but no luck, your eyes moved in panic looking at Denki, his own eyes wide before he started laughing. You tried to move your head regretting it instantly. Your right hand came up, forefinger and thumb pulling at your tongue that was now stuck to the pole you had made victim to your weird antics. “mm thuck.”
you have great goofy moments together, but the moment he hears Bakugo screaming and silence, and then he hears you screaming? Hah, no. All relations are canceled/expired/rejected/blocked/denied/gone. He likes being alive, and right now, you were a threat to his life, so “Oh, uh yeah I got a thing to do in the other ro-“ RUN
he’s more than great full to have you around, your patient with him when he just can’t do something but he’s determined to. Like the month he dragged you of the dorms every night, because “IM GOING TO GET THROUGH THIS HAUNTED HOUSE WITHOUT SCREAMING.” The haunted house opened the first of October, and ended on Halloween, it was terrible, at one point he passed out, another frothed at the mouth, his screams were priceless, he clung to you more than a few times crying about being scared. Decked a few jump scare people, and at least twice went into Pikachu self defense mode and electrocuted the groups of workers around the two of you at least twice. Honestly, you were surprised they let you both keep coming back. But the last day, he managed to only let out squeaks and squeeze your arm and hands but he did it. Thirty one long nights of walking the same halls, jump scares, and voids, mesmerizing the right way of the maze, you mad wit out fine, he was only slightly shook.
Art? Denki doesn’t get it, claimed he can’t draw to save his life and when you watched him try you believed him, BUT THE COMPLETE AND UTTER SHOCK WHEN YOU FOUND OUT HE WAS BASICALLY AN ART MAJOR WHEN HE SHORT CIRCUITED..... you started saving his drawings and sketches, and then you’d show him and he’d be impressed, but completely denies that he ever did it. “Nope, you got the wrong guy, you’ve seen me, I can’t draw a circle.” But he loves to watch you paint, and take photos, but don’t take him to wildlife sets with you. He will get hired of waiting for birds and throw himself on the grass and start sighing loudly and rolling around, “Nothings coming y/n!” “MAYBE IF YOU SHUT UP THE BIRDS WOULDNT FLY AWAY LIKE ITS THE END OF THE WORLD!” Silence, you can definitely feel him staring you, “Well that’s just rude.... you scared off the only bird that was actually here.” Pottery? He watched you, and he wanted to try, the first time he ended up slinging clay everywhere, second he can’t keep his hands still enough, the third time you took pity and ended up like the cheesiest movie scene, but, you were behind him guiding his hands, he became a flustered mess and crushed the almost pot when you spoke to him and he felt your breath on his shoulder. He was blushing and flustered and then started apologizing for ruining the pot... in the end you both together did make a lopsided pot, it now sits in your room, home to your shared black prince succulent. When you brought it home he made anyone who would listen come see his first pot and new child.
⚡️✨✨⚡️⚡️✨⚡️⚡️⚡️✨⚡️⚡️✨✨⚡️
“Y/n?” You heard knocking and groaned getting up off your bed to open your door.
“I brought someone else to meet prince...” the look you gave him was one of ‘Are you sERIOUS?’
You closed your door a bit to look at the digital clock that was hanging just above your desk, 1:37 in the morning...
“It couldn’t wait till sun up?” You asked eyes kinda squinty as the hall light started to flood into your room now that you opened the door wider to let whoever in.
“It’s important everyone knows my new son!” He stepped in and you moved and plopped onto your desk chair.
“Alright, but be careful, you bruised one of his petals last time.” You stretched and looked at your abandoned school work, you looked at it reading the question you had struggled on, and by some miracle, being half groggy and half awake, you read it and the answer came to you. You started to write it down before you forgot. And you were so proud of yourself, until you heard the feminine voice.
“Kaminari, you’re an idiot.” And then a slightly muffled laugh.
You didn’t have a problem with Jiro, in fact you liked her as a friend, she was nice, had good taste in music, bullied Denki with you sometimes, friendly and you’ve never seen her angry or get snobbish with anyone. She was laid back and cool.
But, one thing you didn’t like, was the fact she was slowly becoming the center of Denki’s flirting. Jealous? Nahh....well....no.... maybe a little? Nope, nah that’s not it.......okay yeah.
“Y/n Chan! Jiro is bullying me.” He came and shook you by your shoulders pulling you from staring at your school work.
You turned your head to look up at him. “What?” You asked.
“She called me an idiot.” He pouted and closed his eyes.
You laughed and dropped a hand onto his head, after he kneeled to plead you defend him, “Oh Denki, if you want me to disagree it’s gonna be a long night.”
He pouted at your words but sighed in defeat, until the next words came, “So (y/n), if Denki’s son is in your room does that make you the mother of his son?”
You looked at Jiro a faint blush tinting your cheeks as you registered what she said. You gave a few quiet laughs but before you could say anything Denki became a stuttering flustered mess. Catching both of you and pulling you both out of the conversation that almost started.
“Well! (Y/n)! Well go! A Princess does need her beauty sleep!” He winked at you as he left in a hurry, Jiro just quirked a brow before she told you good night and you returned it as she left. You yawned and got back into bed, before your phone buzzed and you cursed, but the blush on your cheeks wirsned at the flirty text you’d gotten from Denki, you’d think you’d gotten used to it already, but maybe the feelings you thought you’d pushed away never really left the surface.
‘Good night princess 😉 Don’t forget to dream about me 💛’
Cringe yes, but that’s literally the best flirting line he has. Apparently getting comfortable with Denki meant he was comfortable flirting with you 24/7, no hesitation. And you enjoyed the attention and flirted back with him, but things kinda changed when Jiro started to give him attention too.
******
“Mornin’ babe,” you yawned at Denki’s greeting and gave a wave and small smile as you walked to a table and plopped down. You didn’t get much sleep, you finished your homework so now you had the weekend free, but what were you going to do? You stared at the empty table in front of you thinking about nothing, head empty, until Mina came and sat across from you, “So babe huh? Is it official!” She whisper screamed.
“Pfft, just about as official as me being All Might.” You had a small smile, small but genuine. “Boooooooo.” She pouted, “I have my own theories but I really want to tell you this one, soooo! Bakusquad girls day! But... just you and I. Get ready let’s go!”
So, after deciding you’d buy something to eat instead of cooking you got ready and then both you and Mina set off to talk theories and what’s really going on in her head. “So, I think he wants something serious but since you guys joke so much I think he thinks he’s in the friend zone and don’t even deny it I know you like him, I’ve seen the way you smile at all his stupid jokes even I don’t laugh at all of them and I try to be nice. Plus the way you loook a Jiro is enough to show your jealous but he doesn’t see that, I’m pretty sure he thinks you just don’t like her humor or something, but from what I’ve seen your good friends with her when Denki isn’t around so that lets me believe your jealous of his attention going to someone else. Soooo, what do you say? What do you think? And I think he’s trying with Jiro because you guys kinda have similar personalities and hair cuts? Well not really but you know? When your in love you call broccoli Midoriya and a grenade Bakugo but that’s a different story, so? What do you think?” You just stared at her, the takoyaki had with your toothpick just to far from your lips as you wondered if she was right. A shot smile pulled at your lips as you looked down and closed your eyes to let out a sigh, “Well, I won’t say your wrong, I’ve done lot of things but being in denial has never been one of them. I’m not going to confess or anything but I do have one question.” You looked at Mina through the corner of your eyes while your face was still pointed to the ground. “Yes!” She cheered and nodded looking at you with a big smile, “If this is about a plan I’ve got it all figured out so don’t worry!”
You shook your head and faced her completely, “Nope! Keep the plan well use it later but, if I do something about this Denki thing you have to so something about tape boy.” Mina became flustered at your words but nodded, “well, your first lady she smacked you back causing you to slightly choke on the Takoyaki you’d finally started to eat, after catching your breath and wondering around for a bit you both talked it out and it’s go time.
****
The next morning you started the plan (titled by Mina) “Seducing Pikachu” Taking a deep breath you readied yourself to take your flirting next level, he called you babe you had to call him daddy, he gave you a hug you pulled his face down to peck his cheek, he draped an arm over your shoulders you had snuggle closer and hug his waist, he tried to tease you by taking your hand you can’t pull away, in stead you interlock fingers and squeeze, if he leaned into your ear to whisper something you can’t push him away. And we’re you ready? No, in fact you felt queasy, and like you had to bathroom, but with a shove from Mina you entered the kitchen and like usual “Good morning babe!” And the usual flirty wink, but this time instead of getting flustered or yawing you locked eye contact and with everything you had, “Mornin Daddy.” You smiled at him and walked to the fridge to try and occupy yourself. In the background you heard Mineta screaming about the name daddy. You looked at Denki with the same smile after grabbing a juice and he was flustered, red cheeks and it looked like his hair had fluffed up a bit. It’s working! You waved at him and walked to the common room and sat down on one edge and looked at the tv, it was playing some show about volleyball. Jiro came and sat across from you on the other sofa joining you and a few others in watching this show, right now, the only empty seats are the spot next to you on the love seat, or the two seats beside Jiro. He sat by you and was strangely quiet, oh gave him a smile when he turned to look a you, he smiled and looked at the tv, after an hour or two your hands began fiddling with the juice in your lap and you felt a tug at your hand, you felt Denki place his hand on yours usually you’d pull away and punch his shoulder, but this time. You didn’t take your eyes of the tv when your intertwined your fingers and squeezed his hand. You brought your other hand and squeezed his hand between both of yours and snuggled closer to his side and laid your head against his shoulder, he tensed a bit then relaxed quickly. He laid his head on yours and you eyed Mina real quick, you gave you a thumbs up and you motioned to Sero with your eyes and she stopped and pouted. After another hour you started to get up and pull away from Denki. You felt a hand pull at yours and you looked at Denki, “Where are you going?” You titled your head, “Gonna go buy lunch maybe.” He looked up at you still holding your hand, “Don’t leave me.” He said, “Come with me then.” You gave his arm a tug and without second thought he jumped up outside you were cool, but inside, you were going ballistic, inside you were nothing like usual, you were honestly so surprised that this plan was working, with your attention he didn’t even pay attention to Jiro,,,, were you really jealous?
Getting to a ramen place you both sat down and filled our sheets with your orders, casually sitting in silence your phone dinged, “So.... did he confess? Or do women really have to do all the work, 🙄, Sero didn’t understand what I meant until I- never mind, how’s it going?”
You smiled at the message and shook your head.
Denki being curious why you were smiling tried to peek, “Mina is trying to confess to Sero and she says he’s an idiot.” You smiled and turned to Denki explaining before he could see.
“Yeah, I didn’t wanna say anything sometimes Sero isn’t the smartest.”
You felt a smile pulling at your lips, “Yeah, I know someone else who is just the same.” You propped your elbows on the table and placed your chin on your palms. He did the same and pushed his cheeks so they looked chubby against his palms.
“Kaminari,” you called his name in a chirpy tune with a smile, he closed his eyes and smiled before he said your name in the same way.
****
“How good are you at noticing small things?” I asked and tilted my head. “Hmmm, did you grow out your hair?” His head tilted, and he smiled.
“No? It’s been this short for a while.” I dropped my arms flat against the table palms up, “try again.”
“Yooouuuu,,,, are wearing contacts?” He asked. “I’m not blind.”
“Yoouuuuu.....are trying a different Boba?” “No... well yes, but not what I’m talking about......try one more time and I’ll give you a hint if you can’t guess.”
He nodded and squinted at me looking like he was concentrating hard.
“I know!” He took my hands in his and squeezed them, I felt my heart start to race, “You’re fingers are cold, the tips are turning reddish.”
I smiled and looked away and licked my top lip trying to not laugh, “That wasn’t it but a good guess.”
“Then what is it?” He asked pouting.
“Close your eyes.” I said and waved a hand, he nodded and then closed them, I placed my finger tips on the left side of his jaw and tried to pull him closer, after getting him halfway across the table I leaned forward and lightly pressed my lips against his cheek.
I pulled away, and moved my hand away from his jaw.
“I...so think you should try again, I didn’t get the hint.” He looked away with a bush slowly becoming prominent on his cheek.
I smiled and shook my head, silence fell over us as I shifted around, “Another hint huh?”
“Maybe just one... or two... or a few....” he still didn’t look at me hands now fiddling together.
“You know, for a flirt you sure do get nervous when someone actually makes a move on you.”
“Heh, yeah.” He was smiling but not looking at me, “Sooo, when?”
“Do you remember the day, you got sick and made me baby you for a whole week? It was that Thursday, you feel asleep on my chest, and I held you and had to pull the blanket off, I realized then, how much I cared about you, and how much I’m willing to do to make sure you’re okay. I realized how much I love your terrible jokes and cheesy pick up lines, your warm hugs and the face times late into the night, and the movie nights passing out at three in the morning and rushing to class when we woke up late. Holing your hand when you were scared, and bullying Bakugo, honestly, I wouldn’t wanna die at the hands of Bakugo with anyone else. I’m not saying I love you or anything, but if this is what falling for someone feels like...I don’t not like it, especially when it’s you.” I looked out the window we sat by and could feel his stare, I looked at him through the corner of my eye.
“I wouldn’t want to be murdered with anyone else.” He held his hand out and I tilted my head to look at him, I took placed my hand on his and he smiled, before he shifted his fingers and closed them around mine. I smiled and closed my fingers squeezing his hand.
“So? Are you going to ask?” He said.
I felt my brows furrow, “Ask?”
“Ask me to be your boyfriend.” His smile widened.
“You’re supposed to ask me!” I scolded and shook our hands.
He tucked his head between his shoulders, “okay okay, fine.... now you’re going to wait because you yelled at me.”
***
“Y/n!” I turned to look for the person who called my name, “yeah?” I asked and pulled my blanket tighter, the Christmas season was here and I was freezing on the sofa.
“Come look! The snows falling again! And the it’s pretty on the blossoms that are still around.”
“Fine.” I grumbled and stood up, I walked to the second floor windows and looked out. Sero, Denki, Kirishima and Bakugo were all outside, I could hear Katsuki screaming at them while the ran around dropping things on the floor.
They all stopped and moved away as Bakugo screamed at them and took off his gloves, it looked like he was grumbling something until Denki slung an arm I’ve this shoulders, Bakugo brought up his hand causing sparks and Denki to smile nervously before patting his shoulder and moving his arm off.
Mina tapped on the window and they looked at us, we waved when three of the four waved. Denki turned to Bakugo and with a simple blast a chain reaction started and lit up a circle, inside the circle were the words made in very sparse but still pretty blossoms, “will u be mine?” Your phone began to ring and you answered it.
“So, after two months of non official dating, will you be mine?”
You smiled, “Yes, Kaminari, yes.” You swallowed and over the phone you heard cheering and watched to em high five minus Bakugo who was pulling his gloves back on. That night, you spent under the blue keys you two piled high, his head on your chest, and you kissed his head running your fingers through his hair, “I love listening to your heart, it’s pretty, like you.” Your take his face in your hands and kiss his lips or forehead, and eventually would change spots, still cuddling to keep the warmth and love between you while the rest of the world was slipping into sleep or madness.

You know that soulmark AU? Yeah? Well I made another chapter and I’m proud of it.

I’ve been given permission to use the idea for fanfics, and I am very grateful for that. Make sure to give them some love!! https://fanartfunart.tumblr.com/post/184661279405/filed-under-aus-i-do-not-plan-on-actually-doing
Please also check out the last part of this I wrote, the first part of the ‘Soulmarked’ Series!
Without further ado, please enjoy,
The first Encounter
~~MORE~~
Logan was ten years old, and he still had four blackened marks on his forearm. Not a single one had gained color yet, and it was starting to drive him insane. He tried to distract himself with as much as possible with extra work and so many books. However they were his soulmates. He knew they would eventually meet. That didn’t make Logan’s life easier though. People accused him of faking the extra marks, and some were disgusted by the amount. Five people all going to be in a relationship? How was it even possible? Luckily Logan read. He read far above his grade level, even able to get his mother to buy him a book about people with multiple soulmates. It was one that he was working to memorize, one of the ten year olds most important things.
At the moment he was at school, bored. He had already finished the homework for his advanced math class. He had skipped a grade easily, so instead of being a fifth grader, he had moved up to sixth and took advanced classes. It was work that was a bit more his level. If he had to take basic fifth grade classes he really would go insane! They would be far too easy for Logan Foley! But even now he had worked ahead and now had nothing else to do. For now he would stare at the marks on his arm, and hope that one of them started changing color. At least then he would have something to focus on…
Patton Foster had been living in shades of white black and grey now for about five years. He honestly had trouble remembering what color things were. Obviously he knew the sky was blue and the grass was green, but what were blue and green? What did their pigments look like? They were both different shades of grey, but that didn’t really help him. All the nine year old could do was stare at a colored pencil or marker and hope he picked out the right one. Did hair come in purple? Who knew anymore. It was going to be purple this time.
In his art class, Patton and the two other colorblind students were given passes on their art. And although he still tried to be accurate, sometimes he’d draw a red skinned person with blue hair and yellow eyes. The teacher told him it was okay, and Patton tried to believe it. He kept a smile on his face. He could be perfectly happy, even without color! He would get them back once he met his soulmate! Yes, Patton was still a bubbly bouncy fourth grader, just as he should be.
Roman… Roman O’Ryan was sick of hearing the same song over and over again. It seemed his soulmate favored playing one song on loop just to drive him crazy! However it was okay. It may be a weird song that he wouldn’t normally listen to, but Ro has memorized all the words. In fact, he memorized most of the songs his soulmate played. Although tastes seemed to shift around a lot. Once or twice he could have sworn that the songs overlapped as if more than one was playing at the same time. It was weird to think about. How could one soulmate listen to so much music!? Oh well. He’d deal with it later when they were able to meet.
It was nearly Romans tenth birthday, and he was really excited. He was a fifth grader at a school near the edge of town, and would be having the best party ever! His mother was bringing them all to a themed arcade for his double digits! Roman had been handing out invitations to anyone who looked like they were friendly, when he saw someone. The boy was covered in black swirls, like a pattern that the boy couldn’t memorize. As he moved forward towards him and held out an invitation, their eyes met. This boy had one green eye, and one that was a yellow tone. However both boys gasped when his left arm began to glow red and yellow through his clothes. Yes, this was interesting…
Declan was minding his own business. Honestly the sixth grader had been sulking about being in another new school. His parents moved frequently, which meant a lot of bouncing around schools. De had been rather annoyed, not looking very inviting when a boy stepped up to him. When he met the boys red eyes though, a warm pleasant heat began to swirl down his arm. De immediately looked at it, seeing a red filling up what had been a blank black flower, and yellows mixing together until there was a proper crown atop its petals. Both boys were utterly speechless.
What should they say first!? De took initiative and held out his hand, voice still a bit shaky from the shock of it all.
“Hey. I’m uh, Declan. Declan Shea.”
“Roman O’Ryan… Are you my soulmate?”
“No, my shoulder just flowed and colored itself in for no reason at all.”
He couldn’t help the sarcasm. De was a habitual liar, something that normally made people annoyed with him and got him in trouble. However Roman… He just laughed and grabbed De’s hand, pulling him up with a bright smile.
“Come with me! My mama is picking me up today! We’ve gotta show her this!”
Honestly Declan didn’t have it in him to object, a small half smile on his face as he was dragged along by a hyperactive boy.
Virgil was quiet. He had grown to be an average student, but he had a few problems. Mostly with anxiety when around other people. Due to that fact, he was homeschooled by his mother and father. Overall he was a happy boy though, learning to read and write at his level. However he excelled in science. More specifically, when it came to the human body. It was always fun to learn about it, and maybe then he would understand ‘Dark Blue.’ He had no names for the soulmates he knew existed, so he just called them after the color their words were written in. The dark blue one was written in long science speak, making it Virgil’s favorite to learn.
He would read all the phrases written on his body every day, smiling as each one was looked at. It was a bit anxiety inducing to think about how he had four soulmates waiting for him, and it was a lot of love to give, but he was still excited. Who wouldn’t be!? Although his favorite at the moment was the yellow one.
‘So you’re the little stormcloud!’
It was written across his neck, and he was happy to read it. In fact, it inspired the boy to learn to sew so he could put a storm cloud patch on his jacket. Maybe it would help his soulmate recognize him. Yes, maybe one day...

Fandom: Time Warp Trio
Author: The_Bookkeeper_96
Rating: T
Summary: Another summer at Horae Manor begins, but before Joe and Tessa get the chance to train, they are sent out on a mission to explore the magic capital of the universe, Mancika. Rumors of illegal magic conversion spread throughout the city, and Joe and Tessa need to locate those responsible. But after the events of last summer, Joe isn't eager to work with his Aether partner, and the two are struggling more with each other than with their enemies.
A/N: Ayyyy, look who finally decided to update. Been sitting on this one for a while before I realized I was never going to be 100% happy with it. And I finally have wi-fi again! Hopefully it’ll stick around and I’ll actually be able to work on my fics and post more frequently.

"Even the mightiest empires would crumble without a strong foundation to support them." - Mancikan Proverb
Fred stumbles down the hallway after Arwen. "Would you slow down a little? I have to jog to keep up with you."
"You really can't take a hint, can you?" Arwen sighs in defeat and slows her long strides.
"Aw, come on. I thought we ended things on good terms last summer. We're all gonna have to be friends eventually." Fred really didn't understand what was up with these girls. Why did they hate him and his friends so much? Sure, last year had been a little chaotic, but they all made it out alive. He'd been trying to play nice, but they were being so difficult, always acting like they were better than him and his friends.
Then again, Arwen's a Red Sox fan. Maybe Fred shouldn't be trying so hard with her. He glanced at her, trying not to be obvious about it. He likes that Arwen doesn't look like most girls with their pounds of make-up and frilly clothes. Honestly, Arwen looked more like a boy than a girl.
But Fred's smart enough not to say that out loud.
"Look, just show me where this training room is, and I promise I won't bother you. I need someplace to keep in shape for football. Besides, I always listen to my music when I work out anyway."
"I just prefer to train alone."
"You won't even know I'm there. Promise." He puts his hand over his heart and gives her what he hopes is a trusting smile.
Arwen studies him out of the corner of her eye and purses her lips. "Fine. I guess it wouldn't be too terrible if you got in shape and learned how to throw a punch. It would definitely have been useful last summer."
"Get in shape?" Fred's smile drops. "I'm already in shape. I mean, look at me!" He flexes his arms to emphasize his point. Despite his best efforts, there isn't much to see.
She scoffs and rolls her eyes. "Right. Bulging muscles aside, do you know how to fight?"
Fred thinks about the brawls he's had with his brothers and all the times he's wrestled with Joe and Sam. He rarely won against his brothers, but he held his own against Joe and Sam well enough, but he's pretty sure Arwen wouldn't count those as real fights.
"I'll take your silence as a no then." She tries to hide her smug smile, but Fred sees it anyway.
"Fine. I don't know how to actually fight, and maybe I'm not as fit as I should be. I don't suppose you'd be willing to teach me anything?"
Fred knows she's going to laugh at him and say no. After all, all of the girls were pretty far ahead of them when it came to this magic stuff. Besides, they'd been treating him and his friends like annoying younger brothers since they met, and Fred was all too familiar with how those relationships worked out. He didn't need another Mike in his life.
He's about to let the whole thing drop and find some other way to entertain himself tonight, but Arwen surprises him by saying, "Why?"
Fred blinks. The only response he'd been expecting was a 'no'. "Why what?"
"Why do you want to work out with me? Or hang out with me at all?" She stops walking to look him square in the eye. She crosses her arms. "What's your goal here?"
"Uh…" He really didn't know how to answer that. He liked Arwen. Out of the girls, she was the easiest to read. She never seemed like she was hiding anything, even when it came to how she felt about him. He respected that honesty, even if it hurt sometimes. She was also hands-down the toughest of the girls. Fred still couldn't believe she fought a drakon one on one with no weapons or armor. Plus, working out was always better when you had a friend to spot you at the gym.
"I guess I just enjoy your company." That didn't really explain his feelings, but it was true.
"Even though I'm a Red Sox fan?" Arwen's frown turned into a playful smirk.
"Yes, even though you're a Red Sox fan. It's not your fault you were born in Boston. If you were a New Yorker, I'm sure you'd love the Yankees."
Her gaze drops to the floor. "I don't think my dad would ever let that happen."
"Why?"
She chews her lip. "He's just a really big Red Sox fan. Runs in the family, you see."
"Sure." Fred totally understands that. Everyone in his family is a die-hard Yankees fan. He can't even imagine what they would do to him if he tried rooting for another team.
Arwen starts to move down the hallway again, taking a sharp right into a plain doorway. "All right. I guess I can teach you a thing or two."
"Really?" Even after all that, Fred is still surprised to hear her say it.
"Yes, really. You should come in before I change my mind."
Fred hurries in the room after her, excited to see what kind of cool magical training gear he would be able to use. He could picture fancy machines that would let him work out all parts of his body at once. Or maybe even enchanted armor that fought him in hand-to-hand combat. Would he get to learn how to use weapons? Like Tessa's sabre?
He bursts into the room, more excited than he's ever been to work out.
His excitement plummets as he takes in the gym. He recognizes every piece of equipment here. It's just a normal work-out room, like the one at his regular school back on Earth.
Arwen chuckles from behind him. "You seem disappointed. What were you expecting? This is a training room for non-magic users."
"Well yeah, but, we're still at a magic school. I expected more. I'm pretty sure my brothers have more equipment than this in their bedrooms back home." He walks over to the weights in the corner. The highest dumbbell is only thirty pounds. He sighs, crosses his arms, and leans against the wall.
"The stuff my brothers and I use is better than all this too, but we could always ask Ro and Cas to get us better equipment." She walks over to a large black mat on the side of the room. "They haven't had non-magic people here in a long time. That's why most of this stuff is so outdated."
"What's so special about us then? Why do we get to be here if we can't control time or space?"
"I don't think we're the special ones. Did you see the way Joe and Tess were acting at dinner tonight? Their meeting with Ro and Cas must have been bad, and their future must be bad enough that they're allowed to bring an emotional support team with them."
"Whatever it is, it can't be that bad." Fred joins Arwen on the mat where she's already begun to stretch. He does the same.
She shrugs in response. "I just can't help but feel like we have a long summer ahead of us."
They stretch in silence for a few more minutes. Finally, Fred jumps back to his feet. He sways back and forth, like a video game character waiting to strike. "All right, coach. What's first? You gonna teach me how to roundhouse-kick someone? Or do a judo-flip? Oh! How about an ax kick?" With each question, he strikes out at the air, like he's fighting an enemy only he can see.
Arwen shakes her head and remains seated. "How about we start with a simple punch?"
He stills. "A punch? I can throw a punch. I have two older brothers who pick on me all the time."
"Show me how you throw a punch then."
"On you?"
"How about you use the practice dummy that's right behind you instead?" She points over his shoulder to a large black fighting dummy. Like everything else in the room, it's fairly basic and has no arms or legs. The head is also bent at a weird angle, showing its wear.
"Oh, right." Fred blushes and turns to the dummy instead. Of course, Arwen wouldn't want to actually fight him. After seeing what she did to the drake in Caelus, he has to admit, he's kind of relieved.
He hears her get to her feet behind him. She moves to stand directly beside him and faces him. Her eyes do a quick scan up and down his body. Not even remotely in a flirtatious way like he's used to from the girls at school back in Brooklyn. This look is purely analytical. He can tell she's already judging his posture and technique.
"Well? Punch away."
Fred notices Arwen smirking at him from the corner of his eye. He scoffs, ready to show her up. He was insulted that this was all she was asking him to do. His skills were way above this. Throwing a punch was something he'd mastered a long time ago when learning to survive his brothers' torment.
He shifts his weight back on one foot, pulls his elbow far behind his head, pauses for dramatic effect, and then lets loose on the dummy. He strikes it directly in the chest.
And forces himself not to let out a pained cry.
Why did that hurt so much? This dummy was made out of rubber, not concrete. He bites his lip and lowers his fist, hoping that it isn't swelling up as much as it feels like it is. "See?" he manages to get out without too much whimpering. "Punching is easy."
Arwen's hand is covering her mouth. Fred can tell from her shaking that she's trying not to laugh, and failing miserably.
She takes a deep breath before dropping her hand, calming her giggles. "Be honest. How badly does your hand hurt right now?"
"Not at all."
"Really?"
"Yup."
She raises an eyebrow at him, one hand falling to her hip. "If you want me to teach you how to fight, you need to at least respect me enough to be open and honest with me."
"Oh, like you girls have been so open and honest with us?" The comment slips out before Fred can help it. The pain in his hand and annoyance at Arwen for laughing at him makes his words harsher than he means. "Sorry, I didn't mean-"
"No, it's fine." Her face closes off again. Whatever progress they had made towards friendship is gone.
"No, really. I know Joe's been a pain in the ass about all this. Maybe he's just rubbing off on me. I don't think you girls are that bad."
"Was that supposed to be a compliment?"
"Um…" Fred rubs the back of his neck. "You guys have been coming off as kind of stuck-up. I know you're way ahead of us with all this magic stuff, but it would be nice if you helped us be more like you rather than shutting us down all the time. We have a lot to learn to catch up to you, so why not get us there quicker, and then we can all learn together."
She squints her eyes at him. "That's… unexpectedly thoughtful and smart of you."
"Well, I play a lot of sports. Teamwork is kind of my thing." His hands drop to his sides. "Maybe we all should start fresh. Just forget what happened last summer and move on."
Arwen chuckles and shakes her head. "I think too much happened last summer for that to work, but it's a nice thought. Look, I meant what I said earlier. I want to train with you. It would be really nice to have someone else be the muscle for the group every once in a while, but I also meant it when I said you need to be honest with me. I can't help you otherwise."
"Seems like we need to make a compromise then. You'll quit acting like you're better than me, and I'll be honest next time I break my hand. Deal?" He holds his swollen hand out for her to shake, a grin spreading over his lips.
"Deal." Arwen laughs and grabs his hand, not to shake, but to inspect the damage. She lets out a low whistle. "Damn, you really did a number on yourself."
"Will I live, doc?"
"Only if we amputate it immediately."
The two teens laugh, breaking up the last bits of tension in the room. When they finally manage to settle down, Arwen tells Fred to reposition himself in front of the dummy. He does as he's told and lines up to strike again.
"Freeze." Arwen moves in close to readjust Fred's form.  The scent of her perfume fills his nose. She may look boyish, but she definitely smelled like a girl, and not like the cheap body sprays the girls at school wore. She wore a rich, intoxicating perfume. The kind he imagined supermodels or heiresses wore.
She moves behind him. For the first time, Fred realizes that she is actually taller than him, not by much, but enough for this whole situation to become somewhat embarrassing for him.
"Lower your arm and hold it here." She moves his elbow down. "And twist your heel out. You need to punch with your whole body, not just your arm." She fixes his posture with ease, like she's done this a thousand times before.
"Where did you learn all this anyway?" Fred holds the new position she put him in. He has to admit, it feels a lot more natural this way.
"Well, I have eight older brothers."
"So you had to learn to fight to survive?" He understood that. It was the same thing he had dealt with growing up.
"Not exactly." She continues to make minor adjustments to Fred's stance. "Even though my oldest brother, Ryan, is twice my age, we've always been pretty close. We had our scraps like any siblings, but we never beat up each other just for fun."
Must be nice, Fred thinks to himself.
"I learned to fight because the twins, Riley and Richie, were getting picked on a lot at school. They've always been the pacifist type, so someone had to learn to stand up for them. I took a couple of classes, showed up to their school one day, and put those bullies in their place. My mom was furious," Arwen shrugs, but a gleam in her eye reveals how she really feels about it, "but the twins haven't been picked on since. And it turns out, fighting is really fun.
"So when Tessa asked me to come to Horae Manor with her, I immediately said yes. A chance to train with warriors and fight magical beasts? How could I say no? Of course, just like you, I was disappointed when I realized that wasn't the case."
"Aside from fighting magical beasts," he adds.
She grins. "Aside from that, yeah. But in order to fight them, you have to do a lot of research. You have to learn about their weaknesses and any special abilities they may have. Fighting people is way easier as long as they can't use magic. Then all the rules change."
He cringes. Studying isn't exactly his favourite pastime. Why can't he learn as he fights his way through the magic world? He'd figure out pretty quickly how to take down any monster. Then he remembers the acid flying out of the drake's mouth, and how it burned through marble and stone. Maybe a little research would help.
"Okay. This is how you should stand when you're about to punch something. Feel it?"
Fred settles into the stance. "I think so."
"You'll definitely feel the difference when you punch the dummy this time. Now, when you're striking out make sure you use your whole body. It adds more momentum and makes the punch way more powerful, but once you make contact, stop your fist and pull it back into you. Watch me."
Arwen stands in the same position as Fred. She pulls her arm back and swings at the dummy, hitting it square in the jaw. She pulls her arm back without any whimpering or hand swelling.
"Now you try." She steps out of the way. "Oh, and don't punch someone in the chest. Focus on the weaker spots like their chin or throat."
Fred stands like he was taught, pulls back, and lets loose. His fist strikes the dummy in the throat this time, and he quickly pulls his hand back in front of him. His hand still hurts, but nowhere near as bad as it did after the first punch.
"Better?" Arwen crosses her arms and smirks at him.
"So much better." Fred smiles back. "What else have you got for me, coach?"

❄🎅🎄❄🎅🎄❄🎅🎄❄🎅🎄❄🎅🎄❄
Emile frowned as they pulled up to their house with their dad. The house was dark and looked intimidating compared to the houses around it as they were lit up with lights of all colors and sizes. "No lights on. Your Pa must be out shopping."
A head popped up on the roof. "Oh! Good! I'm so glad you're home!" Emile and Patton looked up to see Logan up in the roof, wrapped in a long coat as he held a strand of lights in his arms. "I can feel it, Patton!" He exclaimed. His eyes alight with determination. Emile frowned as they watched their father. "When the town asks who has the most spectacular of lights in Whoville, they're going to say, 'Mr. Logan Lou Who!!' This is the Year!!"
Patton chuckled fondly at his husband. He glanced to the side and noticed something a bit concerning. He reached forward and lifted the object carefully. "Is this the Chandelier from our dining room!?!??!" Emile's frown deepened. They found their unease about the holidays taking root deeper.
"Its all for the cause, Honey," Logan called out. He had to be superior, he just had to be. "Oh! Emile, Honey bee! Could you be my little helper and unscrew the lightbulb from the fridge?" Emile blinked rapidly, trying to determine if their father was in fact serious. "I somehow missed that one."
Emile peered closer at their dad and noticed his tie tucked firmly in place and decided their father was in fact serious. Emile forced a smile onto their face as they walked inside carrying a small stack of presents.
"Every. Single. Year." Logan muttered as they grabbed light strands and began moving them trying to set them up. "Mr. Roman May Whovier has the best lights. But not this year! This is the year I am going to defeat that prim, perfect, prissy little prince-" Logan was interrupted by the man himself.
"Logan! Hello!" Roman called out dramatically.
Logan looked over to see Roman in a deep holiday red Santa dress with white trim, Santa hat and matching red boots, tights, and gloves. Logan frowned. "Roman."
Roman chuckled. "I've never seen so many fabulous holiday lights, Nerd!" Roman shouted from his spot on his front porch. He was just a little disappointed that he was stopped momentarily from his journey but couldn't help but tease his next-door neighbor.
"I'd probably blow every single fuse if I tried to keep up with you, Roman May!"
Roman smirked and picked up a beautiful sparkling antique. It looked almost like a large heart-shaped Christmas tree ornament, though it was missing the top. Each part sparkled individually when moved. At the very end, there were large gold tassels that Roman ran his fingers through. "Isn't this darling? It's handcrafted and near 100 years old!"
"Oh! Wow!" Logan muttered to himself, sarcastically. "I'm really impressed!"
He set it back down in its gift box carefully and turned to something covered in a sheet. "However, this is new." He turned the machine on and aimed it towards his house. Then he shot a stream of lit holiday lights up at his house and they quickly caught onto the house and strung up in a perfect line, giving his house a magazine perfect look. He walked around and blew out the smoke. He turned back to find Logan barely concealing his dropping jaw. He smirked. "Well, good night Logan!" He shot Patton an unseen sympathetic smile and snuck off with a box.
---
Logan rushed to answer his phone as Patton came behind him with a candle. "Hello?" He asked.
An unfamiliar voice answered, "Is your sub-zero chillibrator running?"
"Hold on, let me check." Logan paused and listened and heard the slight hum of their refrigerator. "Yes, my sub-zero chillerator is indeed running."
Virgil snickered, "Well then you better go catch it!" He yelled into the phone and hung up the payphone. (On the other end Patton snorted as Logan stood frozen, the dial tone blaring out from the phone speakers.) Virgil turned to Remy with a smile, "I think I broke ‘em." He chuckled. "Alright, let's go home." Virgil and Remy climbed into a trash chute. Virgil hit the side of the chute and the two of them were sucked through the chute as the lid slammed shut. As they tumbled through the tube leading up to the top of the mountain, Virgil groaned. "There has got to be a better way to do this." Soon they fell out into a pile of garbage. Virgil huffed. Then they heard rumbling from the chute. "Oh, wonderful! More trash!" Three bags fell into his lap and he rolled his eyes. He grabbed a bag as he stood up. "What is that stench?" He asked nobody. "It's absolutely fantastic!" He exclaimed sarcastically. He grabbed another bag and began dragging them behind him as he began walking home. "Come on Remy, let's go home. We can come back for the rest later." He huffed. "It's amazing just how much the Whos throw away. They really could do a lot better with recycling."
He sighed. "But it all falls to me, as always." Remy frowned in his own cat way. His father was so depressed. And he wished he could do more to help him.
------
Emile sighed as they looked around their room at all the holiday decorations and frowned. "Where are you Christmas?" Emile sang to themselves softly. "Why can't I find you? Why have you gone away?" Emile moved over to their window and looked out at Mountain Crumpet. "My world is changing. I'm rearranging. Does that mean Christmas changes too?" Emile sighed and moved to their desk where a letter for Santa sat unfinished. "Where are you Christmas? Do you remember? The child you used to know? You were so carefree! Now, nothing's easy. Did Christmas change? Or just me?" Emile hung their head and moved to get into bed, A fitful night ahead of them.
----
Virgil sighed as he opened the door to his home. He set the two bags of garbage he grabbed onto a catapult and pulled the lever. The bags slammed into a blown-up poster of Mayor Anton Who. Virgil smirked. He really did not like the Mayor. He moved away and hung up his cloak on a hook. He used his homemade elevator to get to the ground floor of his cave. "The first floor, factory rejects." Virgil stepped off the platform and moved behind a screen to get changed. He pulled off the suit and pulled on sweats, a t-shirt, and his favorite hoodie. As he walked past his phone, he checked for voicemails. "Any calls?"
"You have no new messages," the voice from his phone said.
Virgil frowned. "Odd. Better check my outgoing." He flipped a switch and his voice with a hint of Tempest Tongue came out through the speaker. "If you utter so much as one syllable, I'll hunt you down and gut you like a fish!!!" Virgil blinked. "If you'd like to fax me, press the star key." Virgil shrugged. He ran down the stairs and jumped into his couch and picked up a bag of chips. "I don't know why I ever leave this place, Remy. I have all the company I need right here."
Remy rolled their eyes, a strange feat for a cat but the amount of bullshit that came from Virgil's mouth, half the time Remy was so in need of an eye roll that the laws of anatomy had to be defied. Virgil opened the chip bag and stuffed them in his mouth. "Am I just eating because I'm bored?"
"Oh, you’re bored? I can change that~" a husky voice whispered in Virgil's ear, causing him to jump a mile high. Roman grinned and came around the couch and hopped into Virgil's lap.
"Roman!" Virgil coughed out. "Don't do that!!"
Roman chuckled and snuggled into Virgil's neck. "But it's so fun. And you look so flustered!"
At this, Virgil's blush only went darker. "Roman!" He exclaimed, his voice an octave higher.
Roman grinned and pressed a kiss to Virgil's neck before pulling away. "I got you something today."
"Ro…"
Roman huffed. "Yes, I know what you're going to say. But I really, really, want you to have this!" Roman quickly pulled out a box and set it on his lap. Virgil sighed but pulled his arms away from their place around Roman's waist. Roman pouted slightly at the loss of contact before holding his breath as Virgil pulled out the antique he had shown Logan earlier. Virgil's eyes widened as he realized how fragile the gift his love had given him.
"Roman...this is…"
Roman bit his lip. "Do you like it?"
Virgil gulped, wanting to look at Roman to answer but too scared to look away from the gift for fear of dropping it. "I love it...but-"
Roman shook his head. "I didn't, as you would say, "waste any money" on it. Although, how can anything be a waste of money if it's for you~" Roman said with a wink towards Virgil.
Virgil raised an eyebrow and smirked. "So you stole it then?"
Roman made an offended Princey noise. "No!" He exclaimed and then calmed down. He looked down at his hands and fidgeted. "I-um…This was in my family for decades. And it was passed down to the firstborn and they are supposed to give it to the person they want to marry."
Virgil blinked as he tried to process what exactly was happening. "Wha….are you…." Virgil blinked rapidly as he felt his eyes getting watery. "Are you? Is this a marriage proposal???"
Roman bit his lip. "Maybe," he whispered.
"I-" Virgil paused. "Can you take this?" He asked as he handed the gift back to Roman. Roman blinked rapidly. Is he saying no??!
Virgil picked up Roman and set him on the couch gently before running off to grab something. He came back to find Roman in the same position only with tears running down his face.  "Love??" Virgil asked and he kneeled in front of Roman. He reached forward and wiped away Roman's tears. "Why are you crying, Ro?"
"Are ...are you saying 'no'?"
Virgil's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "No! I'm not-" Virgil groaned and facepalmed. He brought out a small box. "I'm- not."
Roman looked down at the box and let out a gasp. He carefully set the antique down as quickly as he could. He picked up the box with trembling hands and opened it to find an extravagant ring with a blood-red ruby and gold plated band. It looked like something out of a fairytale. Tears streamed down Roman's face as he put the ring on his ring finger and launched himself at Virgil, tackling his lover to the ground. "Yes!! Of course, I'm going to marry you!!! Yes!! Yes!!! Yes!!!" Roman exclaimed as he planted kisses all over Virgil's face.
Virgil giggled as he held onto Roman's hips to stop him from falling over. Once Roman stopped, he laid down on top of Virgil as the other's arms came up to wrap around his boyfriend-his fiance's torso. Roman sighed. "I love you, Virgil."
Virgil smiled dreamily as he snuggled closer to Roman (if that was even possible) and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. "I love you too, Roman."
Eventually, the two moved to the bed and cuddled underneath the covers as they fell asleep to the soft hum of music.
-------
Emile sat at their desk as they frowned. They had many questions in their curious heart. Why did the Grinch hate Christmas so much? Where did it all start? They had their Pa's blabbacorder and they had used it to gather as much information of the Grinch as they could.
Emile pressed play and was taken back to earlier that day when they stopped to talk to the elderly couple who had raised the Grinch.
*Flashback*
"In your own words, please tell me all that you know about the Grinch."
The couple in front Emile shared a glance, not used to being asked about their son. "Well," they started. "First, you should know we didn't name him Grinch. We named him Virgil," Remus said as he knitted a green sweater.
"Virgil?" Emile asked.
Damien nodded. "Yes. Virgil. Now, he came the way all the Who children come." Remus perked up about to say something only for Damien to cut him off. "On calm nights, Baby Whos drift down from the sky in their own pumersellas."
"So that's how it works!" Emile exclaimed.
Damien nodded and elbowed Remus to stop him from shaking his head. Remus frowned but nodded and picked up where his husband left off. "It was Christmas Eve, and a very strange wind blew that night! It was tasty!"
Damien rolled his eyes fondly at his husband. "We were having our annual holiday get-together, while Virgil landed right at our doorstep. Nobody realized he was out there until morning came. But when we saw him, we knew right away he was special."
"How did you know?"
"Well, his hair was the most vibrant purple we had ever seen!"
"Purple??" Emile asked. It was not a natural hair color for Whos.
Remy's nodded! "Yeah! Very purple! And that morning, we tried to give him cookies! We came over with some cookies on a Santa plate. Then he said Santa!! His first words were Santa! And then we let him hold the plate and he took a bite out of it!!"
Damien rolled his eyes. "It near gave me a heart attack but he didn't get hurt and he actually tried the cookie and he liked that better. After that Remus learned how to cook and made things into weird shapes and Virgil would eat it so I was very grateful for it."
"We raised him the best we could."
*End Flashback*
Emile paused the recording and switched to a different one, trying to listen in a different order than they had first heard them. They pressed play and they were taken back to when they first talked to their neighbor, Roman May.
*Flashback*
"The Grinch?" Roman asked Emile. Emile nodded. Roman bit his lip. "He...was a very quiet child. I hardly remember him though. I was way too busy with my studies to socialize." A memory of Roman staring at Virgil in class dreamily flashed through Roman's mind. He bit his lip. "The class we were in was going to have an annual holiday gift exchange…"
*End Flashback*
Emile paused the recording and switched to another one. They remembered their interview with Mayor Anton Who.
*Flashback*
"The Grinch...he liked Roman. Now, Roman was my boyfriend." Emile kept their face as passive as they could, but they found it hard to believe that Roman really was the Mayor's boyfriend. "You know, I really dislike discussing this Grinch business so close to Christmas…But maybe if you hear the truth, then you can understand why…" Anton stopped and glared down at his assistant who was cleaning his shoes. "Put your back into it!" Anton turned back to Emile found it really rude of the mayor to treat his assistant so cruelly. "I took the Grinch under my wing."
*End Flashback*
Emile paused the recording and unpaused another one. Damien's voice came out through the recording.
*Flashback*
"Virgil told us that he was picked on by most of the students In his class. He told us Anton Who was picking on him the most for his crush."
Remus frowned. "He told him, 'You don't have a chance with him. You're 8 years old and you have purple hair!' It really upset Virgil."
*End Flashback*
Emile frowned. They paused the recording and skipped to a moment they remembered in the Mayor's interview. They pressed play and the Mayor's voice came through again. "He had this…unnatural hair. It wasn't right." Emile paused the recording again. They turned back to the recording of their interview with Roman. Emile was transported back to what happened during this part of their recording.
*Flashback*
"Did I have a crush on the Grinch??? Of course not!!!"
Emile raised an eyebrow. "I didn't ask you that."
Roman panicked slightly. "Right…..umm"
*End Flashback*
Emile stopped the recording. I think I'm on to something! They quickly pressed play on the recording with Virgil's parents. Remus's voice came through the speaker. "Virgil came home that day before his classes gift exchange and he was even more in the spirit of gift-giving than before."
"It's not that he doesn't like Christmas," Damien's voice broke in. "It's just, he doesn't like how commercialized it has become. And that whole evening, he worked on creating a gift for his crush. But the bullying from Anton made him buy cheap brown hair dye. He came home that day, just before we all moved up into the mountain-"
"You moved up into the mountain?" That was their voice.
"Yes," came Remus's voice. "Just until he was old enough to live on his own. But he told us that his teacher had asked if everyone had given their gift, Virgil called out that he hadn't and stepped out where he had hidden behind the coats."
"He had a bag over his head to hide his hair and the teacher told him to take it off. He did and hid behind an open book. She told him to set that down too. And then she told him to take off the hood on his hoodie. After that, everyone laughed at him. Even the teacher."
Emile stopped the recording and switched to Roman's. "He was so upset. He ended up throwing the gift he made for me, it smashed into the wall. Then he picked up the tree and threw that as well!" Emile paused the recording as he remembered something the mayor and his assistant had said about this moment. "The anger." That was the mayor.
"The fury!" said the assistant.
Emile frowned and pushed play on Roman's recording again. "The muscles!" A pause. "It was such a horrible day. They were so cruel to him." A barely concealed sob. "I could hardly bear it … that was the last time anyone ever saw him. The very last time."
Emile stopped the recording. "I need to talk to Roman again," they said as they stood up and prepared to go talk to Roman again.
-----
"Emile?" Roman asked as he opened the door. "What are you doing here? Did you forget to ask a question?"
Emile shook their head as they stepped inside and Roman closed the door. "No, I was curious."
"About?" Roman asked as they sat down across from each other.
"What..what do you really think about Virgil?"
Roman froze. He subconsciously played with the ring on his finger sitting beneath his gloves that he had hurriedly pulled on before answering the door. "I-" Roman bit his lip, debating with himself before he pulled off his gloves.
Emile frowned, unsure how this was relevant but paused as they noticed the ring. "Did-did the Mayor give that to you?"
Roman sighed and shook his head no. "Virgil did. I...lied earlier. Virgil is…" Roman sighed as he got this far way dreamy look in his eyes. "Virgil is the only man I could ever love. Unlike most of the Whos in this town, Virgil sees me. Actually sees me. I'm not just some pretty face or voice. Virgil loves me for me."
Emile's eyes widened. "So...are you saying the Grinch isn't bad??"
Roman frowned. "Grinch! Ugh! It's such a horrible name! One that Mayor Anton started. Virgil is the kindest person I have ever met. He just wants to be left alone. And he likes being our local cryptid." Roman sighed, starstruck. "Isn't he the greatest?"
Emile smiled softly. "You really love him."
Roman nodded. "I do. We-" he looked down at his hand. "We're engaged now!"
"Congratulations!"
Roman smiled. "Thank you."
"When…did you see Virgil again after that day?"
Roman sighed. "It was sometime 8 or 9 years later. Anton had asked me to the school dance. And I was so furious with him. I would much rather go with Virgil. Plus, he had played a big part in driving him away. So right after school, I grabbed the gift Virgil had made me, I had kept it in a box all those years, and I marched up Mount Crumpit in the hopes I would be able to see where he might have gone. And then I found a door. I knocked, and his parents opened it."
Roman paused. "I was in such a shock. And I asked to talk to Virgil and they, although suspicious, let me. And Virgil fixed the gift after I apologized for not standing up for him. After that, we just…kept in touch. I would visit him at least once every week. And eventually, after his parents moved back to town for good, we went on a date. And…” Roman smiled fondly. "The rest is history I suppose."
Emile smiled. "I think...I might want to make him the holiday cheermeister."
Roman blinked. "Oh hun, I don't know. He has anxiety and probably won't accept."
Emile shrugged. "It's worth a shot."
“You’re right about that…” Roman grinned. "I'll help you convince him!"
"Thank you!"
"You're welcome."
Emile stood to leave only to pause before they reached the door. "Where's the gift he made you now?"
Roman smiled softly. "Its sitting right beside my bed." Emile smiled and nodded before leaving. The Grinch wasn't bad. He wasn't even a Grinch after all. He was just a victim of bullying. As Emile walked home, he decided he was going to make the town see the real "Grinch".

Logan leaned over the edge of the guardrail to gaze into the ruined city below. He squinted, but without his glasses he couldn’t see much more than the blurry shapes of the buildings. Virgil and Roman were just smudges on the ground, and both vanished from sight as they walked under overhanging beams.
A moment later there was a faint groaning from below which rose suddenly to a roar as one of the massive beams began to slide to one side. Logan felt a cry rising in his throat just as the beam suddenly froze in its path and went lumbering through the air in the other direction and smashing against a building, where it broke and fell to the ground as rubble. A cloud of dust and debris rose so wide that Virgil and Roman were totally hidden from view. Logan turned to look for Mx. Stokes and Mr. Picani, but several other students were already screaming for them
Logan squinted, but there was no chance of seeing to the ground. He started down the stairs as quickly as he could. It was difficult to see where each step ended, so he ran with a guess. He tripped once, but caught himself with a wild flailing of his arms. He could hear the teachers trying to restore calm, and hoped they weren’t watching him. Without his glasses even his quirk was weak. Well, even weaker than usual.
The dust was beginning to settle when Logan reached the bottom of the steps, but it didn’t help much with his blurry vision. The beam had made a depression in one of the buildings, but the other damage was minor. Logan resisted a cough.
“Virgil? Roman?”
A sudden blast of light emerged from the buildings, and Logan saw Virgil’s silhouette (too short to be Roman’s) illuminated for a moment before Roman followed his glowing hand into the open. He was using one arm to shield his mouth and nose, and the other to light his way; he seemed otherwise unharmed.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” he yelled through his arm after two throat-clearing coughs. The dust was settling, and Logan could see Virgil standing between him and Roman. Both boys were so dirty from the settling dust that their blue uniform jackets were now khaki in color. “What the hell did you do?” Roman insisted. He dropped his arm and even through his blurry vision Logan could tell that the other boy looked vaguely shell-shocked.
Virgil was shaking wildly as he tried to gesticulate an answer. “You..you hit the buildi— you knocked down the beam.”
“Knocked down?” Roman yelled. “That thing went flying through the air, you maniac! You could have killed somebody!”
“I saw it,” Logan said.
“Oh, so you’re here now,” Roman said, noticing Logan for the first time. “You didn’t see jack shit without these.” He chucked a blob at Logan, who caught it and looked down to recognize his glasses inside a sphere of Kai’s polypeptide gel. The durable nature of the material made it difficult to break into, but the glasses seemed unharmed
“Logan, what did you see?” Virgil asked.
Logan tried to break through the outer layer of gel to his glasses. “Unfortunately, not much. I was at a height of multiple stories and without my usual lenses. The beam did certainly behave outside the law of gravity. It began to slide downward, and then suddenly jerked upward and into that building.”
“Mess up halfway through trying to crush me, huh?” Roman growled. “The hell kind of quirk do you have?” He was very near Virgil, and had one finger raised as if to jab him.
Virgil was bristling. “Shut up, lightbulb,” he said, still unsteady but no longer stuttering. “I just saved your stupid life.”
“You just better stay out of my way, pipsqueak,” Roman said. “And you.” He reversed his finger to point to Logan. “Don’t lose your damn glasses again, okay?”
Logan didn’t have a moment to come up with a response before he was interrupted by a shout from above. Mr. Picani was almost falling down the stairs, and came to the base out of breath.
“You boys okay?” he asked, hands extended as if prepared to shield them. “Mx. Stokes said that all the safety settings are still in operation, no idea what happened.”
“We’re fi-,” Virgil said.
“We don’t know what happened either,” Roman said over Virgil. “But we got the glasses back. Sir.”
“All that matters is that everybody’s fine,” Mr. Picani insisted, ushering them toward the stairs. “We can replace glasses, but we can’t replace our students.”
Virgil and Roman didn’t speak on the trek back up the stairs, but even without his glasses Logan could see the tension between the two.
“Are you really all right?” he asked Virgil once they’d come out of the building and Roman had jogged a few steps ahead. Mx. Stokes has quelled the students’ panic and was escorting them onto the bus.
“Fine,” Virgil said. “Just real sick of Roman.”
“I can tell you don’t like him very much,” Logan said. He finally ripped his glasses free of their gooey prison and then leaned down in a confidential whisper. “To be completely frank, I share your sentiments.”
Virgil stifled a laugh. “Thanks.”
Mx. Stokes repeated Mr. Picani’s concerns as they got to the bus, and then smiled broadly once they confirmed they were all right.
“You kids will get to play in the zones soon enough,” Mx. Stokes promised, brushing dust off of Virgil’s shoulder. “But I don’t need you guys down there without training.” They checked the boys off their checklist and gave a friendly wave. “Last thing we need is another UA accident!”
Mr. Picani paused outside the bus to say something to the other teacher as Logan and Virgil climbed on. There was only one empty pair of seats left near the front of the bus, and Logan stepped aside in the aisle. Virgil paused, and then slid in first.
“You don’t want the window?” he asked.
“You didn’t seem to like the aisle on the ride here,” Logan said. “Would you like to switch?”
“No, that’s fine.” Virgil shrunk a little and stared out the window. Logan hoped he wasn’t offended. He glanced out the door of the bus. Mx. Stokes was patting Mr. Picani on the shoulder, and the two parted as the bus’ engine started.
Logan wasn’t sure if the other students thought the same, but it was nice to see two professional heros with such a friendship. In the media heroes were often in hot competition, or at the best participated in work-required teams. In the real world, however, Logan had now seen the great Glass pat Mesmerman on the shoulder like an old friend.
He settled against his seat as the bus pulled away. He was tempted to ask Virgil more about what had happened in the Ruins Zone, but wasn’t sure how to begin, so they rode in silence for several minutes as the students behind them babbled about the visit.
“Hey,” Virgil said after a while.
Logan glanced up.
“You have…” Virgil tapped his temple. “Some goo on your glasses, still.”
***
Despite the unanticipated loss of Logan’s glasses and collapse in the Ruins Zone, the class arrived back at UA just as lunch was beginning, and Logan and Virgil were joined by Remigius, who offered them sticks of gum which they refused before he popped three into his own mouth.
“Pretty wild what happened down there,” he said. “I saw that beam go flying. You got your glasses back though, I see.” This last part was to Logan, who nodded. Remy blew a bubble, and there was a moment of pause before it popped. “You must have some quirk, little dude,” he said to Virgil. “Because I know that wasn’t Ro’s handiwork by a long shot.”
Virgil shrunk and laughed stiffly.
“Let’s get in the line before it gets too long,” Logan suggested, and Virgil followed. Remigius had a paper bag in one hand, and split off to seat himself at a table.
“You don’t seem to like Remigius asking too many questions,” Logan said as they waited.
“He’s a fine guy,” Virgil said. “Just...yeah.”
“I understand.”
“Thanks.”
When they filed back into the classroom after lunch, Mr. Picani was writing in large strokes on the board: UA SPORTS FESTIVAL. A few students oohed and ahhed.
“Before you begin your final classes of the day,” Mr. Picani said, “I wanted to remind you all that next week begins the annual sports festival here at UA. I’m sure you’re all familiar with it, but we’ll be going over a few details today and discussing it in more length in your Hero Studies classes this week.”
The UA Sports Festival was televised every year; with the most prestigious hero program in the country, it was hardly surprising that so many people tuned in. Professional heroes and scouts often contacted the school following the festival with early offers for apprenticeships and nominations to high-ranking students.
“Preliminaries will be after lunch on Monday,” Mr. Picani said. “The top forty-two students to complete the preliminaries will pass into the main festival rounds. Remember that not only hero students, but also students in your grade from the support, management, and general courses will be participating. Therefore, no hero suits will be permitted on the field.” Several hands had flown into the air. “Hold your questions for now, as we’re a little short on time,” Mr. Picani said. “But begin thinking about your plans for the festival; as first-year students, you’ll be presented as heroes-in-training to the public for the first time.” He underlined the words he’d written on the board. “I’ll get out of the way of Mx. Talyn for your science class now.”
Logan found that even he had trouble focusing on biology while thinking about the sports festival. He stared at a Bunsen burner on the windowsill and began drawing its component parts absentmindedly in his notebook. He began making lines to start labeling the drawing, and realized that they looked like a sports bracket. He turned the page. He usually enjoyed Mx. Talyn’s lessons, but now he could only hear a vague chattering in the background as he drew a full bracket, beginning with sixteen contenders. Of the forty-two entrants to the first round, only sixteen proceeded on to the one-on-one rounds. Those would be the students to receive the most media attention.
The hero course was divided into two sections, 1-A and 1-B, with 1-A being Logan’s class and both classes containing twenty students. The support, management, and general classes were of the same size and almost equally prestigious, but didn’t focus on hero techniques or quirk use. There were occasionally dramatic underdog stories, like a strong-quirked general student making it into the semifinals, but usually the other classes were trumped by the hero students. Logan tapped his pen against his desk. If classes 1-C through 1-K contained twenty students each as well, then there was a total of 220 students attending UA, and only forty-two slots in the festival.
“Putnett squares are an excellent display for genetic odds,” Mx. Talyn said, drawing a two-by-two chart on the board. “We can see how likely an outcome is using this visual.”
If we’re going to talk odds… Removing other benefits and deficiencies, any individual student had a 19% chance to conquer the preliminaries, and a 7% chance to enter the one-on-one rounds. Logan tried to remember previous years. Hero students were far more likely to pass the preliminaries, but that was no guarantee. He also had no idea about the quality of the second hero class, 1-B, who had the benefit of not losing their homeroom teacher in the first week of the school year. Logan wished he had the previous years’ data in front of him. Making it to the festival would be an excellent initial promotion into his hero career.
Of course, Logan mused, every other student would be thinking the same thing. Virgil was splaying pencil spirals in his notebook, and Roman had spaced out in the direction of the board. Kai’s nose was running again. Logan sporadically took off his glasses to clean them against his shirt.
The rest of the school day was much the same. Students were quiet but unfocused in class, and loud and with a single goal between classes. Roman’s posse sans Roman were an especial contributor.
“My mom remembers seeing Mr. Picani at the festival when I was a baby!” Rafaela announced. “She told me as soon as she heard he was one of our teachers.”
“That’s crazy, Mr. Picani and the other teachers were just like us not so long ago,” Kenny responded.
“That was the year the villain Spite threatened the city,” Kai said. “That was what first made Multiman famous.”
“He’d only just graduated, too,” Rafaela said.
Virgil turned in his seat to stare at Logan. “Sports festival, huh?”
“It’s a great opportunity,” Logan said. “What are you thinking?”
“Thinking I’ll be lucky to make it past the preliminaries.” He swung his feet back and forth under the desk and swiveled to look at the empty seat behind him. “Too bad Terrence is sick, he won’t hear about it.”
“We’ll fill him in tomorrow,” Logan said. “He and I are from the same neighborhood. We walk home together and I can tell him about it.”
“So you won’t be walking with him today, then,” Virgil said.
“Not today, I’ll miss him.”
“Well...I wouldn’t want to replace Terrence or anything, but I’ll walk with you. If you want.”
Logan blinked. It was a kind offer, but Virgil always left the school in the opposite direction; they weren’t from the same neighborhood. “Don’t you go west when school ends?
“Right, nevermind, sorry,” Virgil said. “I was just thinking I could walk you home and then...turn around and go back. It’s silly.”
Logan suspected the arrangement was not for Virgil’s convenience, and supposed that the only alternative motivation was that Virgil enjoyed spending time with Logan. It would be rude to crush his suggestion. “You can’t live too far from school,” he said. “Are you near West Midoriya Hospital?”
“Just a few blocks from there,” Virgil said.
“My mother’s studio is near there,” Logan said. “We could walk to your house and she could come to get me when she leaves work.”
“Oh, you don’t want to come to my place,” Virgil raised his hands defensively.
“Well, you wanted to come to mine.”
“Isn’t that a little out of your way?”
“Not as far out of the way as your walking me home and turning around would be.”
“You got me.”
***
Logan didn’t walk often on the west side of town, so he tried to take in the route Virgil walked by rote, in case he ever needed to find his way again. A text from his mother confirmed she could pick him up at five, so he only regretted he hadn’t put a snack in his backpack in the morning.
He and Virgil had plenty to talk about with the upcoming sports festival, so the subject of the strange event in the Ruins Zone did not come up again, and the walk — longer than Logan’s usual one — did not seem long at all, and they soon arrived at a small brick apartment building. Logan followed Virgil through the lobby and up a flight of stairs, where Virgil let himself into apartment 208.
There were many photos on the walls of the apartment, most of them of Virgil and a women Logan assumed was Virgil’s mother. One recent picture, of Virgil’s middle school graduation, was placed prominently near the front door. The other photos stretched back through Virgil’s childhood. There was one of him staring grumpily at the camera in corduroy overalls and a fresh haircut on his first day of kindergarten, and a photo of the haircut itself; young Virgil’s eyes squinted at the clippers as they sheared off several inches of his dark hair and left behind buzzed sides. There was a photo of his first birthday, his mother crouched over his shoulder to blow out the candle of a cupcake for him. Baby Virgil’s eyes were wide in admiration of the tiny flame, the same color as his lacey birthday dress.
“Ugh, ignore those,” the teenage version of Virgil said to Logan. “My mom sure likes taking photos.” Virgil’s mother looked a lot like her son, with dark hair and a thin but lively face.
“They’re nice,” Logan said. “Thanks again for having me over.”
“It’s no big deal.” Virgil slumped his backpack off next to a coat rack before wandering toward the kitchen. “Do you want, uh...soda?”
“Sure,” Logan said, following. The kitchen connected to a small living room and held a two-chair table with folded leaves. There were two doors across the room, one slightly ajar to reveal part of a bathroom sink and mirror. More photos were on the wall, some of a younger version of Virgil’s mother sans Virgil. Her hair had been longer back then. There were also some of Virgil’s childhood drawings in frames and two pride flags pinned on the closed door, one bisexual and one, smaller and newer, trans.
“Sorry, I don’t host much,” Virgil said. “That’s the bedroom over there, and I sleep on the foldout. That’s about it. Do you want a cream soda or a Hero-Cola?” He squatted in front of the fridge.
“Cream soda,” Logan said. “Thank you.” He glanced back at the photos on the wall, trying to think how to continue the conversation. “What’s your mother like?”
“She’s cool,” Virgil said, getting a Hero-Cola for himself. “She’s just busy. She went back to school and all a couple years ago, so now she studies and writes her management thesis every night after work.” He snapped his soda open with a satisfying crack. “She wants to build a better life for us and all, you know?”
Logan nodded. “She sounds very nice.” He fumbled again for a way to continue the conversation. “My mother is a photographer too.”
“That’s cool,” Virgil said as he sunk into one of the two chair seats. “Do you want to…”
“Sure,” Logan was already moving to sit, and set his backpack on the floor. “Um...is that one yours?” He pointed at the bisexual flag.
“My mom’s,” Virgil said.
“Oh.” Logan’s brief playground romance with Corbin meant he’d never “come out” to his middle school friends, but besides Terrence he wasn’t sure how many of his A-1 classmates had taken the hint yet.
“I’m actually gay,” Virgil said suddenly, shattering Logan’s mental image of strutting into UA wearing a rainbow flag as a cape.
“Oh!” Logan said, so loud that Virgil flinched. “No, that’s great! No, no, I mean, me too!”
“Oh,” Virgil said, quieter and longer than Logan had.
Logan felt heat rising in his ears. “So, about the festival, I think you said you taped last year’s competition?”
“Yeah,” Virgil said, leaping onto this new topic. “On a VHS, can you believe it? Surprised the machine even still works. Want to watch it?”
“I was just thinking today how helpful it would be for my notes if I could analyze previous competitions.” Logan reached into his backpack and fumbled for a minute. “I was running the numbers today and — oh here it is.” He produced the notebook and flipped a few pages. “Any individual student has a 19% chance to pass the preliminaries, but as hero students, I’m almost certain the chance is much higher, but I just don’t have the data.”
“Eleven years ago, only seven non-hero students passed, and only two made it to the one-on-one,” Virgil mused.
“Eleven years ago?”
Virgil rolled his eyes as he stood to cross into the living room. “My mom taped that one for me when I was little. I watched it so many times the tape broke, but I remember every detail. Picani was in his final year then, you know. He’s only twenty-nine now.” He knelt down and shuffled DVDs under the TV. “Here’s the one from last year.” Virgil glanced over his shoulder. “We can watch it for uh...your notes.”
“That would be excellent.”
