Say what's on your mind || Prompt
Tumblr media
"Eeeeeeeehhh...?" It's gonna be a solid meh from him, chief.
Tumblr media
"Look, I'm gonna have some real strong personal biases here. They kinda captured my best friend, chased him through a city after he escaped, and then captured him again once he got distracted with a fight. All of that... over a mistake that they made. So excuse me if I don't look upon them in the most favorable of lights.
"I kinda just think that the way they run things over at G.U.N. is... sort of a complete mess? They're so brash, it's always their way or the highway. And I get that the stuff that me and my friends do technically counts as acts of vigilantism, but come on! It's clear as day that the stuff we do is good, how many times have we saved the world from Eggman's plans by now? Yes, we prefer to do our own thing, but a little cooperation from their end of things wouldn't hurt every now and then!
"They only get involved when things are the most dire. I'm extremely thankful that they intervened after the Chaos Crisis in Station Square. We were undermanned. We're all strong, but we obviously lack the spread of an army. The only reason so many people made it out of those floods is because of the power of plenty.
"And then we have stuff like the Black Arms Invasion, where... ugh. Yes, they are indeed helping. Again, sometimes the strength of a widespread army is more potent than a couple of really uppity animals who don't know when to quit. But they don't do investigations! They don't check with outside sources to confirm or deny suspicions of foul play or alignments before they take action! They have zero curiosity at the concept of a Plan B! It's just... first draft done! Let's ship it!
"At the end of the day, Shadow was an immense assistance to the end of that invasion. Super Shadow was the one that beat back the invasion! Singlehandedly! And he could've been on our side far faster if G.U.N. agents weren't shooting at him!"
Annoyance. Irritation. There's a creak of a computer chair as the cushion of its headrest is sunk deep into. And the fox simply groans and groans a long and sustained grumble, his whole self currently being spun around in said computer chair. No, he did not stop to speak. His mouth moved and so did his spinny-chair.
Tumblr media
"I feel like Team Dark's involvement with G.U.N. is the only reason they even work with us anymore. And even that's pretty stinkin' sparing. I mean, we handle ourselves fine as is, but a little help here and there wouldn't hurt! I know they've got a lot to protect, but it'd be insane to think that Eggman isn't pretty high up on their long list of priorities. Maybe they could look into a long-term solution for all of this? Jail exists, y'know. Eggman is a pretty tricky guy to pin down, but I bet if an army went after him, it'd be a little easier to get the job done!"
Bah. A hand is waved to the air, a body's roundabout whirling falling to a crawl as the rest of his momentum is burned off. He gives up. "It's vexing to say the least, but I think we work best when we're doing our thing and they're doing theirs. 'Nuff said."

When is the first time Tom and/or Maddie uses the dreaded "I'm not mad, just disappointed"?
Sonic was unfortunately on the receiving end of that line.
He’s a mischievous curious kid, it’s no secret. But sometimes it gets out of hand.
Once upon a time, pre Tails and Knuckles, Sonic was living it up as an only child. Unfortunately that meant that quite a few chores fell on him.
One day he was entrusted in mowing Toms beloved lawn. This was before there were holes, so it is growing green and healthy.
Sonic had some trouble due to his height, but he eventually got the hang of it. It’s a manual push lawnmower powered by gas and a motor, for context.
Anyway, our little blue devil decided that this was going too slow. He begins to run with the mower, having great success with speed and haste. He laughs to himself wondering why he didn’t think of this before.
Then, when it was all said and done.. the mower refused to stop. The momentum had been built, and fate has decided.
Sonic is now being dragged across the yard by the mower he is trying so desperately to stop. Normal method aren’t turning it off, and things went from bad to worse as the mower tears through the cut grass and into the dirt, leaving dirt paths in its wake.
The mower takes a sharp turn into the tree line, and Sonic now knows there’s nothing he can do. He lets go of the mower and takes cover behind a rock as it rolls into the woods, shredding sticks and leaves.
Eventually it becomes jammed, hits a tree, and falls over, finally turning off.
Sonic wipes his sweat away, thankful it’s over.
“S O N I C”
Uh oh.
Sonic grabs the broken mower and hauls it back into the yard, where Tom rips it from his hands “Sonic, what on earth did you do?? You had one job. One. And now look, my yard is destroyed. Do you have anything to say for yourself?! You better have a damn good excuse for this one, kid.”
Sonic shuffles his feet. He feels some tears coming, as he is not used to being shouted at, especially by Tom. “I-im sorry..” he then explains what had happened.
Tom calms down a bit, hearing that it was only an accident. Sonic asks “are you..mad?” To which Tom responds “I’m not mad, Sonic…” he sighs and gets up “just disappointed.”
That for some reason stung more than it would have if he were just mad. Sonic rushes up the wall, onto the roof, and through the sky window.
Maddie, now having heard and seen what happened, goes to find him.
Sonic thinks he screwed up big time and there’s no going back. He thinks he’s no longer wanted here because he just keeps bringing destruction. As he’s packing a bag to return to his cave, Maddie stops him.
She explains to him that just because of what he did, that did not make Tom and Maddie love him any less. Just because he destroyed the yard and mower, does not mean he is no longer wanted. It was an accident. Sonic did not do anything of malicious intent, and did his best to stop it, which is the main thing.
Maddie and Sonic agree to not tell Tom that Sonic was trying to pack a bag.
Tom later sits Sonic down and apologizes for raising his voice at him, but what he did really made him upset. It was only an accident, so he forgives him. Grass grows back!
Sonic is very relieved. He goes up to his toll room to let out the rest of his tears and stress through crying into a pillow.
He does have to pay for a new lawn mower tho. And he did! Only for Eggman to ride it.

Olympia sits down beside shadow, not really saying anything quite yet. Just staring off at the horizon for a moment, letting the silence sink in as she debates if she plays off the moment as a mere chit-chat or get to the serious topic she came here to ask.
After a moment, she sighs, looking down at her hands, and then just says what's on her mind.
"Hey, Shadow, do y' think I'm.. too lenient? When it comes t', y'know, lettin' people get another chance? It ain't my style but things seem to get a lot worse 'fore they get better - if they even do."
The silence was a change of pace that Shadow might have found favorable, under different circumstances; it wasn't often that he and Olympia got a chance to simply sit down, and look over the world they've spent their lives protecting - the great reward for their efforts.
Tumblr media
But it was even rarer for Olympia to voice a doubt in herself... he listened intently, looking down to the grass beneath them as thoughts raced to ponder the question.
"Hm. Saving the world means everyone will look to you or I for that decision. But don't you think that expectation is not really our business? So you stopped Eggman, for what feels like the thousandth time, and you know already that he'll go back to fighting you as soon as he's finished licking his robots' wounds."
Tumblr media
"But it's not our job to kill; it can take a thousand stumbles before someone finally finds their way, but you can only take someone's life once - you can never take back something like that, and its consequences can run deeper than we could ever imagine. If someone had finished off Doctor Eggman... there were a number of points that make me think we might not be able to sit here contemplating him. So is it our duty to pass judgement over someone, and decide for ourselves that someone has reached a point of irredeemability? In my view, it's not our job to rehabilitate anyone, but that doesn't mean it's our job to be absolute arbiters of fate. When our hands are forced, when we're left no other options, the answer is clear, but that is seldom the case."
“So, my answer is no.”

Sonic and the Robotnik Wars, an AI generated story. Episode 3
Eggman: (looks at Eggman Jr) Did you set the bombs?
Eggman Jr: Yes, Doctor.
Eggman: Good, now let's go collect the prize.
Scene transitions to Angel Island.
Knuckles, Blaze, Cream, and Cheese are walking around Angel Island.
Knuckles: (shouting) Helloooo! Any Chao over here!
A chao comes out from a tree and walks towards them.
Chao: (in chao language) hello.
Cream: Hello Chao.
Knuckles: (to Cream) Ask him about the Master Emerald!
Cream: Oh, ok.
Cream: Hey, any chao here know what direction the Master Emerald is?
Chao: (in chao language) it's that way!
The chao runs off into a group of trees.
Knuckles: (to Cream) You sure its in that direction?
Cream: (nods) I think so.
Knuckles: Alright, lets go!
Scene transitions to Eggman.
Eggman: (standing on his giant mech) Eggman bad!
Scene transitions to Shadow at his apartment.
Shadow: (looking through a telescope) There she is.
Amy: (walking up to Shadow) Who are you looking at?
Shadow: Her name is Angela.
Amy: (annoyed) And why are you spying on her?
Shadow: Because it's my job to protect her.
Amy: Protect her from what?
Shadow: (looks at her) From Eggman.
Amy: What does Eggman want with her?
Shadow: He wants her to be his bride.
Amy: (shocked) Why?
Shadow: Because she's a princess from the Chao World
Amy: But what's she doing in our world?
Shadow: (shakes head) I don't know, but she needs help.
Amy: (frowns) Do you think I could help?
Shadow: (confused) Sure, if you want.
Amy: (Thinks of something) You could train her to use her powers for good.
Shadow: (thinks for a few seconds) Yeah, she could do that. But I don't know how to teach her.
Amy: (smiles) I could help you.
Shadow: (surprised) How?
Amy: I've been training with Sonic for almost 10 years. I know how to teach others to use their power.
Shadow: (shocked) You can?
Amy: Of course I can!
Shadow: (thinks for a few seconds) Alright then, let's get this started!
Scene transitions to a shot of Lake Wisp.
Amy, Shadow and Angela are on a boat.
Amy: Okay, when you're ready to learn how to use your power, just think of a symbol.
Angela: (look puzzled) A symbol?
Amy: (thinks for a second) Kind of like a sign or drawing.
Angela: (looks worried) In chao language?
Amy: (shakes her head) No, like a symbol like an eagle, a heart, etc.
Angela: (looks worried) What's an "eagle"?
Amy: It's a type of large bird.
Angela: I don't like birds.
Shadow: Angela, we're going to teach you how to control your power, so calm down.
Scene transitions to show Knuckles's plane flying above the clouds. We see inside the plane. Tails is piloting the plane, Knuckles is sitting next to him, and Blaze, Cream, Cheese, and Rouge are in the back seats.
Tails: (yells to Knuckles and Rouge) Look, Eggman's stolen the Master Emerald!
Knuckles: (looks over at Eggmans base) And he's had it all along. He planned this from the start.
Tails: There's no way we can attack that fortress, Eggmans army is too big.
Knuckles: (thinking for a minute) We land the plane, make a plan, then sneak in.
Action finally cuts to Sonic attempting to escape from Eggman's Lair. Sonic is fighting several Eggman robots at once. He runs into a giant tube and flies out of it, using a spindash to take out several of them at once. He finds a hole and jumps through it, only to be attacked by several more robots. As Sonic is fighting off those robots, Silver arrives to stop him.
Silver: Sonic, surrender now, and I wont hurt you.
Sonic: Never! Tono wa fushigina ga uratagi
(translation: No! I can never lay down my arms)
Silver begins throwing robots at Sonic using telekinesis. Sonic jumps over them and strikes down several. Sonic then clambers up a large pillar, grabbing onto a round protrusion. He slams his legs into it and launches himself into the air. Silver uses his telekinesis to pull Sonic towards him, but Sonic manages to leap away. Sonic barely dodges Silver's telekinetic attacks. He grabs on to the ends of the pillar, causing the whole thing to bend. Sonic swings around, slamming his feet into Silver's chest, sending him flying.
Silver: (sputters out) I'm hurt!
Sonic: (laughs) I know it hurts, but you're still going to have nightmares about this for the rest of your life.
Silver: (growling) I'll make sure you do!
Sonic: (moves out of the way) You'll just end up hurting yourself more.
Silver: (thinks of an idea) That's why I have to end this!
Silver blasts several robots by using his psychic powers. He does a back flip over the top of the robot pile, knocking them all down. He then creates a tornado, which he uses to send all of the scraps of metal at Sonic.
Sonic: That's not good!
Scene switches back to Knuckles, Rouge, Cream, Cheese, and Blaze. They are outside of Eggmans base trying to figure out how to get past the army of robots.
Cream: We can't fight them all!
Knuckles: (thinking for a moment) Maybe we don't have to.
Rouge: What are you talking about?
Knuckles: Blaze can attack them, which should be able to distract the arm long enough for the rest of us to sneak in.
Blaze: (very nervous) Oh! I can attack them?
Knuckles: You can. Use your flames to fry their circuits, then hide out until we get to the Master Emerald.
Blaze: (excited) Thanks!
Blaze runs ahead to the robot army. She then opens her mouth and sends out a fire blast. It hits a group of robots and immediately short circuits them, causing them to burst into flame. The other robots begin attacking her.
Rouge: It's working! Now let's get to the Master Emerald!
The heroes make their way past the robot army. They are able to sneak past them and enter Eggmans base. The inside is a large complex, with several ledges, stairways, and doors.
Scene switches to the evil robot lair, centered in a large main chamber. Crates and boxes surround the main platform. Computer monitors, various screens, and control panels are everywhere. Eggman is in the middle of it all, perusing a screen. Eggman Jr enters.
Eggman: (to himself) Yes, yes! We're getting closer! Just a little more fine tuning, then we can obtain the Chaos emeralds and take over the world.
Eggman Jr: (in awe) The Chaos emeralds are so powerful! Once our army gathers them, we'll rule the world!
Eggman: Yes! And then-
Eggman is interrupted by several alarms going off. One of the large screens changes to show Blaze fighting Eggmans army, the other shows Sonic trying to escape and fighting Silver.
Eggman: Of course! Right when everything was going so well!
Eggman ponders what to do for a few moments.
Eggman: Junior! I need you to go after Blaze. She's too dangerous to our plans.
Eggman Jr: Yes sir! Off I go!
Eggman Jr runs off.
Eggman: (thoughtful) The Chaos emeralds have the most powerful abilities! If we unite all 7, I'll finally be able to take over the world!
Scene switches to Sonic being pursued by Silver. Silver is using his telekinesis to grab onto Sonic and pull him down. Sonic manages to hang on to a barrel, using it to pull himself upwards. Silver then flies under Sonic and grabs onto the barrel. Sonic falls to the ground, pulling Silver down with him.
Silver: (angry) You're mine, Sonic! You're not going anywhere!
Sonic: (angry) Yeah? Well you can't catch me! (Pulls out spin dash)
The two are racing towards each other, faster and faster. Sonic jumps over Silver's head and into an empty area. He curls up and zips by, slamming into Silver and sending him crashing into another empty area. He charges forward and leaps at Silver, hitting him in the face. He doesn't stop there though and smashes into him again and again, throwing him down. He then runs up and spins in front of Silver, flinging him into a wall.
Silver gets up and sees a steel door blocking his way. He quickly turns around as Sonic is rushing towards him. He blocks Sonic with his telekinesis and sends him flying into another room. He then chases after him, knocking over a chair and a table. He finally catches up to him, holding him in a headlock.
Sonic: (angry) Don't you have any friends?
Silver: (angry) Shut up!
Scene changes to show Knuckles and crew standing in front of a terminal in Eggmans base. Tails is typing into the panel, trying to hack into it. Knuckles is whispering directions to the others.
Tails: This is impossible. How am I ever gonna-
Rouge: (whispering) Try EGG as the password.
Tails: (typing) EGG?!
Tails types in EGG, then he hits enter. The screen flickers and the word 'ACCESS GRANTED!' appears.
Tails: I did it!
Rouge: Wonderful! Now let's locate the Master Emerald!
Eggman Jr: (off screen) I don't think so!
The camera zooms out on the group to show them Eggman Jr in their way, he is piloting a flying robot with razor sharp claws.
Knuckles: (shouting) It's him! He's the one who stole the Master Emerald and tricked me into that temple!
Rouge: (whispering to Knuckles) Don't worry; we can beat him!
Eggman Jr: (thinking) How could I have forgotten the number 6? This must be a mistake.
The group stands, ready to fight.
Eggman Jr: No, this is no mistake. This is Fate!
Eggman Jr charges towards Knuckles. Knuckles dodges and throws a punch at Eggman Jr's robot. The robot dodges and spins, blocking Knuckles' fist with both claws. The robot swipes at Knuckles and slams him to the ground. The robot then grabs hold of Knuckles' leg and spins him around.
The claw of the robot then slams into Knuckles' face, breaking his nose, jaw, and cheek. Knuckles kicks the robot off of him and stands up.
Knuckles: No I'm not defeated!
Knuckles charges at the robot, punching it repeatedly in the head and back. His knuckles make markings on the robot's metal skin.
The robot then kicks Knuckles in the stomach and slams him down. Knuckles puts his hands on the claw of the robot and pulls himself to his feet.
Knuckles: I will not fail!
Knuckles and the robot are locked in a struggle for control. The robot lifts a claw into the air and slams it into Knuckles chest. The force of the impact sends Knuckles flying through the air, smashing into the wall. He skids to a stop.
Eggman Jr: Haha! My robot is unstoppable!
Suddenly Sonic is thrown through a wall. Landing by Cream.
Cream: (gasping) Are you alright?
Sonic does not look alright. He is bloodied and bruised.
Sonic: Oh, not much. Just a little disagreement between me and Silver.
Silver: (entering through the hole he made) There you are! This escape attempt has gone on long enough!
Silver grabs Sonic by the neck, lifting him up.
Silver: Now I have you.
Will Silver put Sonic back in jail? Can Knuckles defeat Eggman Jr's robot? Do Shadow, Amy, and this Angela have any relevance to the plot? Find out next time!

It’s Earth Day :) Yay 🌎 However, our day did not go that well :( So, I decided to look through old wips to at least be sad about something that would really hurt my heart, and behold, this!
Title: So My Darling (Discontinued) - Caution, this one is like REALLY old and sad.
CHAPTER 1:
There had been many times where Shadow's memories have been a target, a way to make the black hedgehog go rogue. Ever since the first alteration on his first awakening, Ivo Robotnik had used this information to his advantage, coming up with methods to make permanent damage to the lifeform's mind. However, he failed time after time but didn't stop his efforts — his studies communicated that every time his chances of succeeding were higher. So, it was no surprise that on a particular mission, where Team Dark and Team Sonic joined forces, the evil scientist had designed another invention that would do the job, at least that was what he believed. And unfortunately, he did it. Dr. Eggman made it possible, destroying years upon years of the striped hybrid's life, and all with the beam of a laser, shooting the Ultimate Lifeform on sight when he stepped foot onto the base's grounds.
Devastation followed.
"C'mon, Egghead, that's all you got?"
A cheery, blue hedgehog taunted his arch nemesis for the umpteenth time as he spin-dashed the last of a bot that attempted to attack him. And like clockwork, the old villain pounded his fists against the controls of his carrier, anger seething from his already reddened face. The same reaction from the typical battle between human and hedgehog; however, this time, Sonic had the honor of being joined by not just his team but his boyfriend's, too. On cue, the Ultimate Lifeform appeared next to the hero's side, a chaos emerald in hand, and smirked upon seeing the mess that the speedster had made of the last of the Doctor's robots. There would be no need for backup.
"Enough! I'm done dealing with you and your pathetic friends!" The man yelled, irritated with the results of his attack. Sonic continued to enjoy the scientist's angry state, chuckling at seeing that he was once again the winner. The blue hedgehog nudged Shadow's side and gestured at the human, saying it was 'too easy to rile him up.' All the while, Dr. Eggman growled, observing the pest recount the details, exaggerating every once and then, to the other, the so-called partner of the Hero of Mobius. For years, Ivo received humiliation for every failed battle between him and the dumb hedgehog; he had read countless headlines that depicted him as the worst human to exist along with being the one with no social life. A loner, a fool. Compared to the one that stood before him, he was hated by millions, and Ivo was so tired, so done with all that shit. All he ever wanted in life was to hurt that bastard, make him feel insurmountable pain.
So, seeing that the two hedgehogs were still busy talking, the Doctor pulled off one last attempt to ruin the hero's life. One of his fingers reached over to press a button on his dash, initiating the last protocol of his recent invention; though, he didn't even know if it would work since he had not tested it. But seeing Sonic so happy was enough for him to not overthink the call and take the opportunity. Immediately, the sound of hissing echoed in the room, where the three individuals were amid the wrecked machines, and an opening came from the ceiling. A device stretched out, the design similar to that of a laser surgical tool only...enormous. Its pointed end faced the direction in which Shadow stood; it felt similar to a gun being pointed at him. The hybrid had a bad history with guns. Very bad.
"Another toy for us to destroy?" Sonic asked, stretching out his hands above and shooting the device an amused look.
Ivo chuckled. "The opposite! This beauty is set to destroy you..."
"Sure, let's go with that," the hero snorted, turning to his dark lover. "I go left and you go right?" Shadow shifted his focus away from the contraption and stared at the hero. "Wouldn't a chaos blast be appropriate?"
"But where's the fun in that, Shads?"
Shadow sighed and rolled his eyes playfully. Of course, Sonic would say something like that, the hedgehog fed on the adrenaline of pulling any stunts he could in a fight. The hero never chose the easy way out if there was a possibility of engaging in these battles with the Doctor.
"Fine, but please, don't--"
The GUN agent was stopped by the sharp beam that slipped between the two hedgehogs, leaving a scorched spot where the shot landed. Emerald and scarlet eyes widened; the two team leaders were shocked by what happened. That thing could have gotten one of them...
Shadow glanced back at the strange invention, quickly pushing the hero away. "Watch out!" Another beam struck but left the same damage where Sonic had been standing seconds ago. The two locked gazes, nodded, and settled into their usual formation of attack. Sonic went left, Shadow went right. Unfortunately, this tactic had also been picked up by the human scientist after repeatedly watching video footage of all his losses against the two heroes. Because of this, the attack that was supposed to come, Sonic playing as bait and Shadow chaos spearing from the left, never arrived. The reason: the laser focused its next shot on the striped hedgehog. It caught the agent by surprise, failing to strike the object with his chaos spear and taking a hit that sent him tumbling back.
"Shadow!"
The blue hedgehog rushed over to his fallen boyfriend, kneeling to check on the lifeform. To his relief, the damage was minimal, the laser barely scraped the agent's right shoulder. He breathed out as he heard a groan escape tan lips; the telltale sign that Shadow was fine.
"Chaos, Shads, you scared me there for a sec-agh!"
The hero groaned, feeling a sudden wave of pain wash over his lower back. He touched the area where he had been hit, hissing as his gloved fingers brushed against the burn. With newfound determination, he stood up and turned to face the Doctor, glaring at the man. It was time to finish this. However, before he took another step forward, he felt a hand grip his wrist. Sonic looked down to see that Shadow was sitting up and shaking his head.
"Not alone, hedgehog."
Sonic smiled, his eyes softening for his loving partner. "Just like we always promised, huh?" The sitting hedgehog returned the gesture, offering a small smile, and recalled the first time they promised each other that they would stand together against anything. Even if the world chooses to become their enemy, the two lovers would fight like they always have — forever. They were each other’s support…
"Always," Shadow whispered, reaffirming the other's words.
Their moment was cut short by the new beam that hit a few centimeters away from Sonic's foot. Quickly, the hero helped the agent back onto his feet and grinned. "Guess it finally was able to tell us apart!"
The striped hedgehog scowled. "It's quite unbelievable that the Doctor's inventions would have such a problem, especially since that never was one, to begin with."
"There's always a first for everything."
Shadow hummed, regarding the smirking villain with a suspicious look. Something wasn't right here. Although he wanted to warn his rival, the hero was already explaining a new plan, his thoughts pushed to the back of his mind. Remembering they had a chaos emerald, Sonic mentioned that they should use that to their advantage while Shadow reminded him about his original idea.
"If it comes down to it, just do it." And with those last words, the speedster was off, running to officially distract the laser's targeting system. The GUN agent did the same but scanned the device for any weaknesses. It was then that he thought backup would have been a good idea after all. Instead, he focused on finding a way to tear down the laser from where it hung. Maybe if he chaos speared the bolt that held the heavy weapon...
He took his shot, nailing it.
Until he heard the scream coming from across the room. He watched in horror as he realized his action caused the next beam to shift away from the hero but still succeeded in hurting him as it bounced against a wall. Sonic was kneeling, holding onto one of his thighs. He was paralyzed at the scene that unfolded several feet away from him; his state was interrupted by the movement and whirring of the device. His crimson eyes traveled to land on the weapon. It was powering up again and lining its next strike on the blue hedgehog.
No.
Without a beat of hesitation, Shadow chaos controlled to stand in front of his lover, staring straight at the glowing end of the device. Behind him, he heard the distant voice of the hero, begging him to move, and felt a tug at his feet. It was no use: Shadow took the hit. The chaos blast was supposed to go off, but with the speedster nearby, the hybrid didn't want to risk it. Even a chaos control wouldn't have gotten them out in time. All he knew was that he needed to protect his partner, and that was his last thought as everything turned black for him.
"Shadow!" Once again, the blue hero cried out for his boyfriend, his eyes seeing how the Ultimate Lifeform's body fell to the ground. Still, Sonic tried to remain hopeful. "Shads?" There was no answer, no groan, no movement. "Shadow, c'mon, man..." he said, worried. Receiving no sign of acknowledgment, he shifted, biting back his groan, and scooted towards the limped body. It was a struggle — the pain worsened as he put weight on his thigh.
"What a shame."
Sonic ignored the human and kept pushing forward to reach the striped hedgehog. Nevertheless, he should have been faster, injured or not, and gotten to his lover before the mechanical arms that grabbed onto his body, which he failed to see come out from the same device that still hung loosely on the ceiling.
"No, no, no! Give him back! Get your hands off him, Eggman!"
The evil man cackled, watching in excitement as the hero struggled to move, and happily clapped as the Ultimate Lifeform was brought up, closer for the Doctor to inspect him. It seemed that his newest invention had done the job. Though, knocking out the lifeform wasn't the goal. He pressed another button, a sinister smirk spreading across his face; another mechanical limb slithered out of the laser's side compartment. Unlike the shaped hands of the others, this one carried a needle.
"Let him go!" Looking down, Ivo observed the annoying rat get onto his feet, staggering and stifling weak whines. His injured thigh wasn't going to allow him to reach the same speeds as usual for now. It was plenty of time for the Doctor to complete his mission. Ignoring the hero, he glanced back up at the striped hedgehog and the sharp needle, thinking that this would be the greatest hit to the speedster's life.
"If you weren't such an idiot and admitted defeat one day, this wouldn't be happening."
The medical tool proceeded to move forward, heading for the agent's arm.
"NO! PLEASE, DON'T DO THIS!"
The sharp point barely touched jet black fur before the striped arm shifted. The scientist's eyes widened while the hero gasped. Black lids slid open, revealing scarlet eyes, and a growl snapped Eggman out of his surprised state; Shadow regained consciousness, and it looked like he wasn't happy at all. The hybrid released his other arm from the device's grip and pulled out a chaos emerald from his quills. Damn it, why did the Doctor always forget about those atrocious things?!
"Damn you, Shadow--"
"Chaos spear!"
In the next moment, the black blur moved across the room, continually shooting the device and at the Doctor's carrier. Doing a last round, Shadow smirked once he saw smoke filling the area, a definite sign that he destroyed the large thing. As for the man, well...as long as he partially set him on fire would do just fine. The agent would have to wait for the report if he did because right now, he wanted to take his partner away to somewhere safe. So with a new push of chaos energy to his rocket shoes, the striped hedgehog sped over to the hurt hero and carried him, half-listening to his rival’s complaints about being scared and if he lost his fucking mind.
Once they were some good distance from the base, Shadow checked in with the rest, sending their location, before kneeling to take a look at the other's wounds. Thankfully, he always had his emerald on him for reasons like these, too. Taking off his glove, he held the chaos emerald in the other hand and harnessed enough energy to heal the burns, feeling the familiar soothing motion of the energy spilling from his fingertips.
"Why did you--"
"Shut up, I need to concentrate."
Sonic frowned. "Dude, I know you can multitask."
Scarlet rubies glanced up to meet a worried gaze.
"It was too dangerous to do a chaos blast, and a chaos control wouldn't have been enough to get us out of the way in time..."
The hero observed as his lover returned his attention to his injuries, sighing as he knew nothing else was going to come out of the stubborn agent. As the Ultimate Lifeform, Sonic knew his world-known rival could take care of himself, but ever since they got together, it felt like Shadow was taking even deadlier risks to help him. To the point of leaving himself as a shield to save the Hero of Mobius' life. Many would find it romantic; Sonic didn't.
It scared him.
"My, my, it looks like the Doctor did put you two through shit."
A white bat descended and landed in front of the pair of hedgehogs. Sonic waved at her, nervously smiling. "Yeah, he got us but Shads was able to pull off something last minute."
Rouge chuckled. "Like always, you’re so suspenseful, hon.” She expected some kind of snarky remark from her teammate, but she frowned when none came forth. “Shadow?”
The agent remained where he was on the ground, touching Sonic’s thigh; chaos energy filtered through his touch and that was what caught the hero’s attention. The striped hand was starting to shake. Sonic reached out for the other, worry settling on him once more.
“Shads…you okay?”
A pair of eyes looked up to meet the other’s, glazed over, and then, they slid shut, the hybrid falling back.
“Shadow!”
Rouge and Sonic huddled over the Ultimate Lifeform’s body, checking to see what was wrong with him. One of the bat’s gloved hands searched for any injuries near the head; her fingers skimmed under the quills and--
“He’s…bleeding.”
“Bl--the laser! Eggman got a shot on him!” The speedster remembered, scooting over to see where Rouge had found the wound. He glanced up, “Hurry, contact Tails, tell him we need the medkit from the plane.” The female agent nodded and stood up to call the twin-tailed fox through her communicator. Meanwhile, Sonic returned his attention to his dark lover, pressing a hand to the wound in hopes of stopping the bleeding. How could he have forgotten? Wasn’t he just fussing over the guy about getting hurt? Damn it, Shadow, why are you always doing this…
“C’mon, faker, prove to me why you’re always the Ultimate Lifeform,” Sonic murmured, his heart teeter-tottering on the edge of hope and fear, as he wrapped his arms around his life partner. Chaos, please don’t take him away from me, the hero prayed quietly. Without Shadow, he didn’t know what he would do; they had been through so much together. A rocky start as rivals had developed into a friendship and then into something deeper. Both of them had started dating…and just slowly accepted their newfound emotions at some point, eventually becoming lovers.
If he lost Shadow, Sonic knew that would be the hardest thing for him to suffer from his whole life.
---
It started with the little things.
“Okay…go fish.”
Shadow tilted his head in confusion, his body language communicating the same thing to the hero, who snorted and pointed at the cards in his hands.
“It’s your turn, Shads.”
The lifeform glanced down at what he was holding and frowned. “For what?” The blue hedgehog scooted over to him and gestured at the stack of cards sitting in the center of the circle that consisted of Cream, Tails, Amy, and the two hedgehog lovers. “Dude, I thought you understood how to play this game,” replied Sonic as he tried to help Shadow make a pair.
But the striped hedgehog still didn’t understand what was happening.
“Game?” He asked but his boyfriend was too busy playing his cards to the fox’s displeasure. A soft giggle had him looking over to the pink hedgehog that sat at his right; Amy was attempting to hide it behind her hand but failed as she noticed his stare.
“Yeah, silly! We’re playing go fish--were you too busy staring at Sonic, again?”
The hero perked up, grinning: “Hey, you can’t argue that I ain’t good-lookin’, right Shads?”
“Since when did I initiate this game with you all?” Shadow asked the heroine, ignoring his lover’s comment. Amy hummed, stuck in thought for a second. “About twenty minutes ago.” The black hedgehog shook his head at hearing her answer and looked around at the faces of the players.
That couldn’t be right…he was sure he just sat down a minute ago…right?
“Shadow?”
His eyes returned to Rose, studying the strange look she was giving him, as he kept making an effort in remembering the last twenty minutes, but it was even more of a hassle for him to recognize what he had eaten this morning.
“Hey,” a hand reached out to grasp his as jade eyes examined his face with worry. “...you don’t remember?”
Shadow peered down at the cards before him, taking a small breath and thinking again. A sharp pain stopped him from trying as it spread through his head, ultimately becoming a throbbing headache. That must be it, he nervously thought. He had been having them recently, so it had to be the reason behind losing track of what he had been doing. The agent stood up, causing Sonic and Tails’ bickering to come to a stop, and sighed.
“I must be tired. I’ll just head upstairs and rest.” The hybrid headed over to the stairs that led to the brothers’ rooms, knowing that Sonic wouldn’t mind him sleeping on his bed — at least he remembered that. One of his feet was already on the first step when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Looking behind him, Shadow saw the hero watching him, concern evident in his eyes.
“You okay?”
Shadow smiled, turning around to lock their hands in a loose grip. “I’m sure it’s just a headache so don’t worry love.” A light blush dusted his partner’s muzzle, admiring the endearing look before the hero leaned forward to kiss him. Shadow accepted it and believed that for a second his head stopped hurting.

Sometimes, it was a little bigger than the first couple of times it happened.
“See ya tomorrow, guys!”
Rouge shut the door after waving at the departing hero before her smile disappeared. She walked over to where her teammate was cleaning up the dinner table and glared at the infamous Ultimate Lifeform.
“I can’t believe you, Shadow.”
Dark ears twitched at hearing the bat’s annoyed tone as the hybrid shifted to face her with a puzzled expression.
“What?” he asked while putting the dirty dishes in the sink. Rouge threw her hands up in the air, exasperated. “What do you mean what?! You forgot it was your anniversary!” Shadow glanced at her, frowning, and corrected her. “Anniversary? Wh…it’s not today, it’s next weekend, Rouge--”
“In some alternate dimension because today is your special day with Blue!”
“No, it’s not. I know the day of my anniversary,” Shadow growled, “and it’s not today. The date is…it’s…” The striped hybrid paused in his cleaning and pondered about it. He searched through all his thoughts, carefully identifying when the last time Sonic and he had celebrated--shit. In a black blur, he moved around the apartment, a wide-eyed bat watching her best friend move at high speeds, and abruptly, came to stand before her, a chaos emerald in his right hand. He looked troubled, on edge and Shadow the Hedgehog was never one to show it openly, but Rouge assumed it was because she was right.
“How could you have forgotten, hon?” she asked softly, toning it down now that she saw how he reacted to the news.
Shadow reached up to touch his forehead, stammering. “I-I don’t know…th-this has n-never happened t-to me. I-I always remembered…” Before the hedgehog could break apart, fretting over a mistake he made, Rouge opened the door and pointed outside. A crimson gaze observed her, shame slipping away to be replaced by determination instead.
He nodded. “I’ll make it up to him.”
Rouge grinned. “Go get him, Romeo~”
In another blur, the Ultimate Lifeform was sprinting out to where the Hero of Mobius lived. The white bat saw him become a small point in the distance and let her grin fall. Her demeanor switched as worry overtook her; one thought continued to circle her stressed mind.
This wasn’t Shadow’s first time forgetting something so special…
***
Even the younger ones started to realize something wrong was happening…
“He’s a bee?”
Tails nodded as he repeated his answer for the second time to the GUN agent, thumbing through the pictures on his phone. The teenager was trying to look for a good--aha!
“Here, this is him!” The fox handed the mobile device to Shadow, who took it and saw two males smiling happily at the camera. He took in the bee’s facial features and overall appearance; still, he didn’t recall knowing anyone by the name of Charmy. Or that Tails and this person were together romantically.
“Ring any bells?”
“When was the last time I interacted with him?” Shadow ignored the genius’ question and asked his own. The twin-tailed male shrugged as he took his phone back from the other. “I don’t know…like three months ago? Maybe less? I could ask him to come over sometime, so you can talk with him.”
Silence hung in the air after the fox’s offer was said; the teen awkwardly looked around his workshop while the black hedgehog went back to being lost in thought. Actually, Tails was starting to wonder if Shadow was okay. Two weeks ago, Sonic had told him that the hybrid had surprisingly forgotten their anniversary, mentioning that this was the second time the usually organized lifeform missed an important date.
The first being the hero’s birthday.
Tails had commented that it must be the stress Shadow was dealing with working overtime at GUN. What else can explain these occurrences?
“Hey, Shadow?”
The other looked up and raised an eye ridge. The young genius thought a little testing wouldn’t hurt. Just to make sure.
“Do you remember where Ms. Vanilla lives?”
The mother rabbit had last conversed with the striped hedgehog about three days ago to discuss cooking recipes both liked to share thoughts on different dishes. Surely, he would remember her and where she lived; if he didn’t, well, Tails didn’t want to be the one to talk about a possible memory loss or mental issue with--
“Of course.” Shadow's sharp voice broke through his thinking. Disregarding the agent’s rude tone, the teenager smiled and relaxed, knowing that maybe something of risk wasn’t the case here.
“Talking about her, have you gotten your present for Cream’s upcoming birthday yet?”
He moved around his workshop now that he gathered a sense of how bad this situation was. As he picked up a screwdriver, Tails hummed and wondered if he should hack into GUN’s records to see if it was something hereditary--
“Who’s Cream?”
The sound of the screwdriver clattering down to the floor echoed in the workshop. Everything was quiet once more, but unlike the first time, there was no sense of discomfort dawning on the fox but fear.
Dread.

Fate can be kind, guiding souls to meet their halves for life, but she can also be cruel.
Sunlight filtered through the white curtains, bathing two sleeping hedgehogs in warmth, and nothing but peace reigned in the present moment. Although it was a significant day, the two lovers couldn’t have part with each other last night so they had remained together, promising to leave early for their preparations the next morning. And as opposed to what many think, Sonic was the first one to wake up, unknowingly beating his ultimate rival in a challenge. The blue hedgehog rose from the bed, stretching out his limbs and stifling his loud yawn; Shadow was still snoring softly next to him.
His soon-to-be husband, the hero thought lovingly.
Today was finally the day in which both of them united for life, marrying under the presence of Knuckles’ shining treasure — the Master Emerald and in hand, Chaos. According to the scrolls of his friend’s ancestors, it was seen as a blessing for mobians to have both figures present at their wedding. Something about a bright future together.
Sonic glanced at the wall clock that hung on the far side and realized it was time to get moving. He shifted around the bed, hovering over the other’s lean body, and once he was sure he wouldn’t hurt him, the blue hedgehog toppled over, burying his face in white chest fur. Above him, the Ultimate Lifeform groaned as his hands grasped the hero’s sides.
“What the…”
The speedster giggled, bringing his face over to stare down at a scowling one. “Wakey, wakey, sleeping beauty~”
Scarlet eyes slowly blinked open, focusing on its surroundings and the one on top of his body. Shadow observed the dazzling emerald eyes that seemed to look into his soul, the beautiful smile that was presented to him, and felt the soothing heat that channeled between their bodies. An angel was visiting him in the early hours, speaking to him--wait.
“Do I know you?”
The excited hero froze before gently hitting the sturdy chest. “Dude, if you didn’t want to marry me, you could’ve said something last night,” he joked. The striped hedgehog didn’t move, becoming further confused as to what the handsome creature was saying to him. However, his questioning expression went ignored as Sonic rolled over and got off the bed.
“There’s no time for regrets, bud!”
Sitting up and studying the royal blue fur of the other mobian, Shadow then remembered something--no, someone. She could explain what was going on, he thought. So, the dark hedgehog joined the blue one in rising from the bed, silently wondering when he started to share a bed with another.
“Where’s Maria?”
“What?”
“Maria, my sister, where is she?” Shadow repeated.
Suddenly, those shining emeralds weren’t so…bright anymore. The blue hedgehog approached the Ultimate Lifeform cautiously, thinking that his lover wouldn’t joke about his lost human sister, the only family he had aboard the colony besides his grandfather. He stood still once he was a few feet away from the dark hedgehog.
“Shadow…don’t you remember what happened to her?”
“Something happened to her?”
Sonic flinched at seeing his fiance’s threatening glare and immediately thought about calming him. The hero stepped forward, bringing his hands up to show the hedgehog he meant no harm. It wasn’t the first time he got like this but never to the extent of going back years ago.
“You were there when…some people tried to stop you from being released and she saved you--does Space Colony Ark sound familiar?”
“Why are you talking in past tense–”
“Because that’s the past, Shadow…” Sonic said shakily, the worst of his fears coming true and having a difficult time processing it. As the beginning of his tears brimmed the edges of his eyes, the hero asked him one last thing, thinking that hearing the truth would only mean the end of the world for him in a sense.
“Do you remember us?”
The agent looked at Sonic for a long minute, studying him as his face twitched between recognition and not; however, the last of the hero’s hope was crushed by what came next.
“No.”
And Sonic’s world came apart.
---
“Do you remember the time we fought in space?”
Shadow glanced over to his rival and tilted his head in thought. The two had decided to lay down on the grass and watch the cloudy sky above. It wasn’t too hot or cold; a perfect day to go out and relax with your so-called rival. Well, actually, Sonic was his rival, after having recollected his memories from the events the hero was asking about.
“Yes, we joined forces to stop the space station from crashing into this planet, correct?”
The emerald gaze shifted to look at him and smiled. “That’s right, we transformed into our Super forms…”
The GUN agent hummed, his eyes never looking away from those beautiful gems. Another thing he remembered a few months ago; his favorite color was green. It reminded him of flowers and pine trees, of springtime and freshness, of life and hope. Things that his mind was telling him he had seen and experienced already. Long before the day he had woken up and was lost. Shadow still remembered that day clearly — ironic since that was what he had trouble with — and he also figured Sonic did, too. After all, the blue hedgehog had ended up crying after learning that Shadow didn’t remember him.
According to medical professionals and a young genius, it was the result of whatever happened on a certain mission against Gerald’s grandson a few years ago. His memories started to fade away slowly, beginning with small things and progressing to major life-changing moments, until one day, his eyes blinked open to learn that the last nine years of his life were gone. Whatever adventures he had gone on, friendships he had made, experiences he had witnessed, goals he had accomplished, relationships he had been in were erased--no, missing. They weren’t gone forever. Shadow just needed to search for them in his blurred mind.
Focusing back to the present, he realized that Sonic was still staring at him. “You’re doing it again…” The blue hedgehog blushed and averted his gaze, staring up instead. Shadow had caught the other doing it on multiple occasions before — bright emeralds settling on him and softening, exuding nothing but pure love. The love he felt for Shadow’s past self, the striped hedgehog reminded himself every time. Although he still didn’t know much about the Hero of Mobius, Shadow was sure that Sonic’s attitude was usually more upbeat, carefree…
An ache started to build in his chest; a recent discovery he made one day, too. The hybrid didn’t understand why he experienced this, but something told him it had to do with the person next to him. He would have to talk to Rouge about it later. Right now, he shifted his view back to the sky, feeling his lips pull up into a small smile as a familiar object crossed its timely orbit high above in space.
***
“What about this one?”
Aqua blue eyes looked over to where a hedgehog sat on a stool, leafing through an old photo album while holding up a picture in one of his hands. The fox dropped the wrench he was using and wiped his hands with a dirty cloth he grabbed on his way over to where his brother sat. He recognized the picture; it was taken on Sonic’s birthday. Everyone had gathered together to celebrate the hero’s creation day, but what made it particularly memorable was that it was Sonic’s first birthday while dating Shadow. Before he could say anything, a knock at the workshop’s door alerted Tails that their visitors were here.
Tails headed for the door, and just as his hand landed on the doorknob, he felt a big whoosh of air behind him. The adolescent sighed, his shoulders sagging and ears drooping. He wished he could go comfort his brother, but he had two GUN agents waiting for him. The genius opened the door and offered the two a weak smile.
“Hey, come on in.”
Rouge waved. “Hello, hon…how are you doing?” She stepped past the door, Shadow trailing behind her and nodding at the fox as he passed by. Tails closed the door and walked over to his computer, opening the Ultimate Lifeform’s medical records and notes.
“I’m good, just a bit tired with the new project taking up most of my time,” he replied while gesturing at a nearby stool. “You can sit down, Shadow.” The black hedgehog did as he was told and faced the young adolescent. While Tails set up his things for Shadow’s checkup, the bat wandered around the workshop, her eyes scanning over a bunch of blueprints and scribbled notes. It wasn’t until she caught sight of a picture that she looked towards the door that led to the brothers’ home.
“And Sonic?”
“I think he’s trying to figure out how to make chili dogs…”
Rouge glanced back at the younger brother and observed the concerned look the fox was giving her. The only sign she needed to see that the teen was hoping she could go talk to the hero. With a slight nod, the bat strolled over to the door and walked into the blue hedgehog’s household, leaving the two males in the workshop. Silence filled the room but Tails was used to it. The hybrid was never a talkative patient--
“Is he alright?”
The genius was startled by Shadow’s sudden question, almost dropping the thermometer he had pulled out from a side cabinet. He fumbled with the item before his wide eyes settled on the neutral-looking hedgehog in front of him.
“W-what do you mean?”
Shadow frowned. “Sonic knows how to make chili dogs. It would be absurd that he just forgot how to make them hence why I am asking if he’s fine.”
“Did he ever tell you this himself?” Tails asked, ignoring the hedgehog’s question.
“No--”
“Anybody else?”
Shadow’s frown deepened as he noticed the fox’s pushiness for answers but still shook his head in response. His expression went disregarded as the genius grinned. It was starting to creep him out…
“Okay, I wanna try something.”
Blue ears perked up when a knock was heard. There was some shuffling before the hero’s head poked out from the large blanket wrapped around him; he stilled for a second, wondering if he had imagined the sound.
“Blue?” Another knock followed the bat’s soft voice. Sonic knew he had two options: to open the door and struggle to explain how much all this is hurting him or not open the door and struggle with the pain all alone. The hedgehog stared at the door, undecided on what to do, but Rouge quickly fixed the problem for him.
“Hon, please…let’s just talk.”
Slowly, the hero freed himself from the bundle, crawling towards the door and opening it slightly before rushing back to his corner. He tucked in his knees and wrapped his arms around it, burying his face. The only sign he was given that Rouge had walked in was the quiet creak of his door opening wider before a soft click sounded a moment later.
The bat glanced around the room, her teal eyes adjusting to the darkness that surrounded her until she spotted a curled-up hedgehog at one of the corners. She made her way over and sat down next to the hero. Rouge didn’t say anything, letting the unfamiliar silence hang over them; with Sonic, there was never a breath of quietness, the speedster always filling the air with jokes or small chats. Nowadays, it was common for the blue hedgehog to become less talkative, almost returning to his old days when he was a mute.
“How is he?”
Her ears picked up the other’s timid voice. Rouge brought a hand to rest on blue quills and steadily, stroked them gently. “He’s been doing well…learning more bits about that time the Black Arms invaded,” she commented, feeling Sonic shift under her touch, scooting over and almost letting her embrace him in a side hug. Even if he didn’t say it, the bat complied. She wrapped her arms around him and brought his head to lie down on her lap without stopping her soothing pets.
“This is the third time you close yourself inside your room during his checkup--”
“No, don’t start,” the hero cut her off. The GUN agent frowned; this was always what happened. She would come to find him, comfort him and calm his fears only to be rudely stopped when she offered to help. Enough was enough, she thought.
“I thought you wanted to help him.”
“I do…”
“Well, it seems like you aren’t doing that, Blue--”
The blue hedgehog objected loudly. “I am!” The white bat snorted and shook her head. “Like right now?” Immediately, the hero sat up and glared at her. “Oh yeah, tell me what the fuck you’re doing right now, then?”
“Sonic…”
“Don’t Sonic me,” he snapped, “because I know that deep down, you’re here with me to also stay away from the workshop. You’re here not to help me but to help yourself.”
Rouge narrowed her gaze on him as if to warn him about what he was saying. He was talking nonsense. Obviously, all this pent-up frustration was getting to him and he needed out of this place. Maybe a run will do the trick.
“I know you’re afraid like me…” Sonic’s eyes softened. “To be there when Tails tells us that it’s no use. That no matter what we do, Shadow will never remember everyth…” The hero’s voice cracked, breaking the female’s heart. And making her realize that under all the pretenses she put up, those around her saw through her mask and said nothing, thinking that it gave her enough strength to not break down. But the person in front of her was showing her why she shouldn’t bottle up her feelings.
“C’mere,” she murmured as the young hero didn’t hesitate in hugging her. She returned to stroking his quills as his shoulders shook. It was all stifled cries until he shared something that caused tears to well up in her eyes, too.
“Why did this happen, Rouge? Why now…j-just when w-we were going to g-get marr--” He choked up on the last word. His sobs echoed in the room as they both sat there and tried to anchor each other in this storm of horrible happenings. An overwhelming amount of despair had clouded her days and nights, leaving her to weep behind closed doors, while the very person she cried for was resting in the room across from her. The black hedgehog was gradually gaining his memories — he recalled many about his friendship with Omega and her — but what they all dreaded was that it would happen to an extent.
Without claiming those last years of his life, Shadow would never be the same, and along with it, Sonic would fall into a pit of grief, an empty shell of his old self. And something told her that no matter how strong of a grip she would have on him, Rouge knew she would never be able to stop the hero from going down that miserable path in the end.

“You remind me of my sister.”
Amy paused at hearing the other’s comment; she glanced over her shoulder to see that Shadow was still feeding the small Chao on his lap. They were currently visiting Cream and her mother, a thing she made habit of doing with the hedgehog after learning about his complicated condition. The two rabbits were inside the house preparing lunch while Amy and Shadow waited outside on the patio chairs. She had been finishing the flower crown that she had made from the ones in the basket that Cream had placed between the two hedgehogs’ seats. But her concentration was disturbed by the agent’s mention of his sister, even more with the out-of-the-ordinary comparison he made.
“I-I do?”
Soft babbling was heard from Shadow’s lap as he rubbed Cheese’s head gently; the gesture brought a small smile upon the usually stoic hedgehog. He nodded while he kept his attention on the small creature.
“Yes, you both share many things in common….” Shadow lifted his gaze and observed the pink heroine with fondness. “Maria was kindhearted, always looking out for others regardless of who they were, and she always tried her best to make others smile. Even if she was sick, Maria was always a strong person, especially when it came to confronting older humans aboard the Ark. She stood up for me countless times...I had always thought her soul was one of a kind…”
The dark hedgehog’s words trailed off but his eyes remained on Amy. As for her, she was still trying to comprehend what just happened. The Ultimate Lifeform was sharing something vulnerable. Vulnerable. The female fighter had only seen this side of him once back when she was still a kid. To see it a second time struck Amy with a sense of awe, the feeling amplified by the hybrid’s smile that was reserved for a select few.
She stood up and walked over to stand in front of him. He watched in confusion as she glanced down at the crown in her hands, fingers binding the last stem to the other end. Jade eyes fixed the puzzled crimsons with a soft look, and delicately, Amy placed the flower crown on top of his head, adjusting it to fit on his quills. Without thinking about it, she bent down and placed a light kiss on his forehead, making the older hedgehog gasp.
Leaning back, she gave the other a smile of her own. “Thank you for telling me this, Shadow.” He stared at her with wide eyes before Cheese nudged his hand, chirping happily at seeing the new addition to the hedgehog’s appearance. Before Amy stepped away from his personal space, he grasped her hand, causing her to worry if she had gone too far--
“...thank you for showing me that there are people like her that still exist.”
Then, he pulled her forward and hugged her, silently shedding his tears. The motion had startled Amy but her arms slowly came to wrap themselves around the crying hedgehog, letting the tears fall onto her dress — she’ll just tell Ms. Vanilla that she accidentally spilled something on it. Right now, she remained where she stood as Shadow hugged her, his arms tightly wrapped around her waist as he hid his face. Amy wondered how many times Maria had held the other like this, to banish his fears and comfort him with all the love she could give. Again, the pink hedgehog was happy to know that Shadow trusted her and believed she could do the same as Maria had done years ago.
Hm, she made not have known the human girl first-hand, but she was sure that Shadow’s soul was no different than Maria’s, too.

The door to the interrogation room opened and in came GUN agents with Mobius’ notorious villain, cuffed and dressed in a bland brown uniform. His identification number was attached to the shirt’s breast pocket, but no one really paid attention to it. It was obvious who the man sitting down on the chair across today’s visitor was.
“I didn’t expect you to pay me a visit.”
The guardian leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms over his chest, and waited for the agents to leave them alone. With the door clicking shut, the echidna shifted his focus back on the old man, examining him carefully. He had bags under his eyes, the wrinkles on his forehead more visible, his mustache was less bushy, and the loss of weight evident — all signs of how the years in prison have treated Ivo Robotnik.
“How did you do it?”
The Doctor chuckled, a sound that was so empty and cold. “I’ve told you all already I do not have the faintest idea of how it happened…but it brought spectacular results,” Ivo finished with a devious smirk. Knuckles growled, his hands slamming down on the table.
“Why did you target Shadow? What did you gain from all this? What did you think was going--”
“Because of that stupid hero,” Ivo intervened, the guardian scoffing. “For years, that imbecile has ruined my life,” the Doctor continued as a frown settled on his features. “Made the public hate me and ridiculed everything I’ve done…I wanted him to pay the price for messing with me.”
“Pathetic excuses, Eggman. You are to blame for being seen as the bad person here; Sonic has only protected and helped everyone from you and your monstrous robots. You have never done any good for others--”
“Here we go, again--We’re done, here!” Ivo yelled, banging his cuffed hands against the table to alert the agents outside that he was ready to leave. The old villain didn’t have time for this meaningless conversation, especially after hearing it so many times before. The door swung open and in came the same GUN workers from before to take Robotnik back to his cell. The red echidna glared at the man and figured that there was no point in this. The former scientist despised it when someone reminded him of the reality that was his life. Ivo Robotnik was no friend, no ally, no savior for anyone because the only thing he had ever brought to others was destruction and terror. Sometimes, it baffled the guardian as to how Shadow’s sister was related to this…monster.
Knuckles stood up. “Do you even regret it just a tiny bit?”
Ivo paused at the doorway and glanced at the echidna. “Does Sonic ever regret not killing me three years ago when he had the chance?” Expecting no answer, the man moved forward and let himself be guided back to his personal cage. Amethyst eyes remained glued to where the human had left through with his two fists clenched at the sides. Knuckles remembered how poorly Sonic had reacted to seeing the Doctor after having heard the news about Shadow’s state. He had seen the hero transform numerous times before, but all of them were into his Super form.
Three years ago, Sonic had turned dark. The guardian of the Master Emerald had witnessed the chaos emeralds be drained of their energy to give his friend the power to become something unimaginable. Three years ago, Doctor Eggman almost died at the hands of Dark Sonic…it made him wonder.
Did the hero ever regret the choice he made that day?
***
“Sonic?”
“Yeah, Shads?”
“It wasn’t your fault…”
The hero chuckled. “Gotta be a little more specific ‘cuz I’m sure my life is made up of mistakes, dude.”
A bare hand landed on top of a peach one, intertwining their fingers to the speedster’s shock. He looked over to see that his rival was staring at him; red eyes filled with fondness, something Sonic hadn’t seen from the other in a long time.
“Really? All I see are your strengths…the things that make you a brave and spirited hero…”
Sonic momentarily forgot how to breathe as his heart raced. It was the first time the hero heard something like this come from the hybrid. Given how much progress was made over the years, he thought the point where Shadow accepted — began to realize — that there was a whole lot more that happened between them before he lost his memories.
A life where both were happy and in love.
“Th-thank you, Shadow,” the hero stuttered, his muzzle and ears reddening after his hand was given a small squeeze. He didn’t want to tear up and cry now when today’s activity was about visiting a very special place. A faraway location that only the two hedgehogs had planned to go to together to celebrate the Ultimate Lifeform’s recollection of what happened during Starline’s involvement with Eggman.
Space Colony Ark.
His emerald eyes gazed at the many stars that twinkled from their place and hoped, even for a tiny bit, that the striped hedgehog would soon learn about the relationship they had. After all, if the agent recalled the moment they shared in the forest, surely he will find the next years he was missing in his mind. For now, the hero smiled and cherished the present, where Shadow was slowly opening his heart for Sonic again.

It was pouring.
The world was also mourning her death along with the thousands of others on Mobius.
They all took her loss very badly, but it seemed that Shadow took it the hardest. Vector and Espio had questioned the fox about why this was so, both detectives eyeing the red and black hedgehog with concern from where they stood. Tails would forget that very few knew of the hybrid’s deep connection with the heroine; aside from Rouge, Shadow had regarded one of his friends as close family, a sister to be precise. So when a mission had required the help of more helping hands, Team Sonic had sent word out to a great fighter. They won. Unfortunately, not everyone was alive to celebrate their victory. What was worse was that the striped lifeform witnessed the death of his second sister…
For Shadow, losing Amy was reliving the memory of Maria’s death.
And like the first time, he broke down and shut himself off from the rest of the world, losing contact with his teammates and Sonic. There was no communication. Tails thought back to when his brother had become desperate, searching every corner of Mobius, pleading to Chaos that Shadow would return to them. The reaction made sense since they all worked together to help the agent piece together fragments of his memories. They had managed to reconstruct several years of the Ultimate Lifeform’s life before they had started to fear that it would all go down the drain with having no idea where he was.
Until he reappeared today, the day of Amy’s funeral.
Sonic was standing next to him, silently giving his support to the sad hedgehog. Although the hero, one of Amy’s best friends, was hurting too, there was this little part of the fox that knew he was also glad because his former lover hadn’t left him completely. Tails walked over to stand next to the blue speedster and observed the pink hedgehog’s grave in silence also.
“C’mon, don’t do this now,” Sonic pleaded, blocking the black hedgehog from grabbing his GUN jacket and who knew what else he wanted from his closet. After saying their goodbyes to Amy, Shadow had confided that he wasn’t ready to return to his normal routine, saying that he had signed up for an overseas mission. Before Rouge or the hero could protest, he had left in a rush towards Team Dark’s apartment, where his rival quickly followed him. Currently, the Hero of Mobius was trying to convince him of doing otherwise.
“Move, hedgehog.”
The blue hedgehog shook his head, staying put. “I know losing her was really painful - for me, too - but your grief isn’t going to go away if you leave everyone to hide somewhere--”
“I am not hiding,” Shadow snarled and shoved the other aside. Sonic grunted as his back hit the floor; he watched as his rival took out his work jacket and a shoebox. As the agent moved over to the bed to collect the chaos emerald, the hero got on his feet and speeded over to the bedroom door. He wouldn’t let the other get through this time.
“Shadow, you don’t have to be alone…it’s best to be with those that can help you.”
Marching over to the hero, the striped hedgehog scoffed, carrying his items in both hands. “Help? Haven’t you realized that I’m tired of all your help? Don’t you see how suffocating it feels to have everyone reminding me of my old life as if I am some idiot?! I am not the same Shadow! And I’m sorry if you all want that person back, but I just can’t stand all this anymore!”
By the end of his confession, Shadow was breathing heavily, his voice having become louder to the point of yelling at the crushed hero. He watched as the speedster started to tear up, the same beautiful greens he learned to love brimming with tears, taunting the Ultimate Lifeform for being so insensitive, but it was a truth that he wanted to get off his chest. Taking a few steps back, the agent stood in the center of his bedroom, berating himself for the pain he still caused those around him even without wanting to, because at the end of it all, Shadow would never stop hurting those he cared deeply for.
“I’m sorry…th-that I couldn’t keep my promise, Sonic…” whispered Shadow, and chaos controlled out of the room to wherever he was assigned.
The blue hedgehog’s back slid down the door, sitting on the floor and breaking apart. He was gone. Shadow left him. Everything he had struggled to do for his old lover was worthless because Shadow was gone. All their races, the conversations, and moments of gazing into each other’s eyes, one of the few things keeping him afloat, vanished into thin air.
“All I see are your strengths…the things that make you a brave and spirited hero…”
“Because you helped me build those strengths,” Sonic cried, curling up and losing his composure at having his heart broken a second time by the one he treasured wholeheartedly. The rain continued to fall, coming down harder than a few hours ago, and in the back of his mind, the blue hedgehog thought that Mother Nature must have been weeping for more than Amy’s death.
***
Two years later…
Under the heat of the sun, the fastest thing alive rested against the tree’s trunk, his quills acting as a sort of cushion. His lips were spread up in a serene smile as his eyes remained shut; Sonic was basking in the warmth, taking it slow for today — ironic, wasn’t it? Besides that, there was nothing much for him to do since recently, his plans consisted of helping Tails with his projects and visiting Knuckles and Rouge. Actually, he should head over to Angel Island and stop by their house--
A gust of wind startled him out of his peaceful rest because Sonic was sure the weather forecast didn’t mention anything about any storms or rain. And he was right, it wasn’t about the weather at all, instead it was the person standing before him. The blue hedgehog rubbed his eyes figuring that he was imagining Shadow. But the guy was still right there, even after pinching himself on the arm.
“Shadow?”
The lifeform walked towards him and sat down, fixing the hero with an apologetic smile.
“Hey…how are you?”
Sonic gawked, confused by what was happening. “Sh…Me? How am I doing? Seriously?” Shadow sighed, his smile replaced with a frown, though no sign of upsetness was present. Just regret. “I’m…sorry. I know this apology isn’t enough but I think you deserve one nonetheless. You have helped me through what I believe are the most difficult stages of my life, yet I walked the other way when…my world started to crumble.”
The hero only listened, amazed, and blinked at the Ultimate Lifeform. The other spilled his heart, speaking truthfully, but Sonic couldn’t help but admire the black hedgehog at the same time. It had been two years since he last saw the agent; their last conversation was short but unpleasant. The first couple of months had felt so lonely that the speedster thought he would never overcome the emptiness Shadow left in his heart, his life.
But here he was, amending his mistakes. Ha, mistakes, something that popped up a lot in their lives and led them to think that it outnumbered all the good they’ve done. The only way to get rid of that idea was to assure each other of the opposite. However, for that to happen they needed to stick together like they had promised each other long ago.
Should Sonic try this again?
“May I ask you something?”
The hero focused back on the conversation and nodded. “What exactly did you see in me--the old me that made you fall in love?” Oh Chaos, Sonic thought as he took a deep breath, hoping that the other’s sharp eyes didn’t catch his blush.
“Well…a lot of things to be honest. When we first met, all you wanted to do was get revenge for what happened to your sister. While others saw that as wrong, I just,” Sonic glanced at him and timidly smiled, “...saw your determination, something you fought for with everything you had. And once you realized what Maria really wanted, you risked your life to help the people of Mobius, including my friends.” The blue hero chuckled, making the hybrid’s lips twitch at hearing the sound. “Chaos, I still remember how excited I was to know that someone could keep up with me! The fastest thing alive!”
Shadow’s eyes followed the other’s hand gesture and he chortled at hearing the imitation sound of a sonic boom coming from the hedgehog’s mouth. The agent kept listening to how his rival listed many other things about him, believing that he was the luckiest person to have had someone like Sonic be his lover.
About more than six years ago, Shadow the Hedgehog woke up one day with little to no memory of who he was or those around them. All the moments and events that built up to nine years of his life were gone, out the window, and practically, he was back to square one. Who was to blame? Ivo Robotnik, an intelligent man that would not know that one of his inventions would damage the brain of the perfectly bioengineered mobian; the reason being was that the hit didn’t take effect until a few years later. Two years ago, he had been doing very well with his checkups and mental exercises…until the loss of Amy.
Then he left Sonic.
He hid.
But now, here he was, right at Sonic’s side…again.
“There’s a lot about you that made me feel that way is what I’m trying to say,” Shadow picked up on the last of the hero’s statement. A breath of silence followed before the hybrid tentatively reached out for one of the speedster’s hand, catching his attention.
And almost as if they went back in time, sitting in that old memory of where they had been observing the space colony high above in the sky years ago after the post effects of his injury. On that day, Shadow had seen the undying love that lived in the blue hedgehog the entire time, an emotion that Sonic never had let go even after all these painful years.
A true man devoted to his past lover, Shadow would think – how could he have tossed that away, knowing that love was meant for him and no one else?
“Shadow?”
“Thank you for supporting me, Sonic…”
The decade-old words made the hero’s heart flutter, recalling that he heard those exact words on the day Shadow had confessed to him about his feelings for the first time. And as if things couldn’t get more upside-down, the black hedgehog brought their joined hands to his mouth, a chaste kiss being pressed to the wrist of Sonic’s peach hand; the old Shadow had revealed that the gesture was to show that he remembered about the inhibitor ring that Sonic had kept after the events of the battle in space…the moment they had drifted in space as shining stars sealing their fate as lovers unbeknownst to them at the time.
“I’m ready to step away from this darkness,” the present Shadow admitted softly, drawing his lips away from the hero’s hand and looking at him, a genuine show of affection and warmth glowing in his rubies. “Please…lead me out with your light, again…”
Sonic didn’t know what to say, “Shads…what…”
“Let me love you like it’s our first time all over again.”

Prompt goes: Sonic agrees to take Cream out on a small adventure, but Vanilla is completely unaware of that and actually called Amy to come over and take care of Cream while she was out for the day. The end result is Sonic and Amy both fighting over Cream’s care, as Sonic’s proposal might not be as chill as he originally thought.
"He should be here any moment..."
Shortly after their last adventure in Music Plant, Sonic promised to take her out again, this time to a less dangerous yet still adventurous place. The 23rd day after the leaves started falling down was chosen as the date for their next meeting, and Cream waited patiently... until now.
Today's the day Sonic will return, and she's been waiting all day long, leaning on the open window from her bedroom.
"I probably should've told mama about it, don't you think Cheese?"
Her Chao Cheese flew outside and stood in front of her with a concerned look, "chao..."
"Yes, I know... I shouldn't hide things from mama, but I assumed she would be fine with it anyway... maybe I should tell her now, right?"
Cream stepped away from the window, and took a moment to pick up courage to leave her bedroom and talk to her mom. But as she was just about to reach for the door, a voice startled her from downstairs.
"Cream, sweetie, I'm going to be out for a bit." It was Vanilla, ready to go open the front door with one hand, and carrying a bag with the other.
Cream gasped, then opened the door just enough to squeeze her head out the bedroom. "What!? Whe-where are you going, mama?"
"I need to go to the city, buy some things... do you want me to buy you anything in particular?"
Cream hesitated for a second, thinking if she should tell her mom about Sonic right now or not, at the risk of upsetting her or worse... "no... no! I'm fine! Thanks, ha ha!"
"Oookay..." Vanilla opened the door, revealing someone else standing right outside, "oh, by the way, Amy is here to join you while I'm out. Have fun, girls!"
Cream closed the door immediately and held it shut with her body, looking back at Cheese in complete panic, "AMY?!"
Amy entered the house carrying a bag, and slowly walked towards the sofa, "hey Cream! Your mom told me to bring something so I picked up some movies and popcorn for us! I think you're gonna love this!"
Cream didn't say anything, still looking at Cheese, which prompted Amy to leave her things on the couch and come upstairs.
"Hey, you okay?" Amy said, knocking the bedroom door, "something's wrong?"
"Oh, nothing, Ms. Amy!" Cream replied from the other side, refusing to open. "I need to put some things back in place and I'll join you in a bit, don't worry!"
"Fair enough, call me if you need help, though!"
Cream sighed in relief, then jumped right onto her bed, "what are we going to do, Cheese?"
Cheese looked outside the window, confused.
"We got ourselves into this, we need to make up some sort of plan or something, before Mr. Sonic arrives!"
Cheese nodded, and they spent the next 10 minutes thinking about something. Meanwhile, Amy set everything up for the movies, wondering why Cream isn't coming down.
Soon, that feeling of wonder became concern, and Amy went upstairs once again.
"Cream, open this door, please. You're worrying me."
"Okay Cheese, let's hope this goes well..." Cream took a deep breath, then opened the door only to see Amy with her fists on her waist and with a very serious look on her face. "Oh, hey Ms. Amy... I'm so sorry!"
"What was all that about, anyway?"
Cream was clearly uneased by the situation, scratching the back of her head and avoiding eye contact, "Amy, there's something I have to tell you..."
Suddenly, the wind started picking up outside, and Cheese started to fly around the window, weaving arms in panic, "chao! Chao! Chao! Chao! Chao!"
Amy looked extremely confused, but Cream knew exactly what that meant. "Oh, no..."
"Oh no what, Cream? Cream!"
Cream ran downstairs and straight to the front door, Amy chasing after her. A few seconds later, the doorbell rang.
Amy froze in place, "huh? Who's coming now? Cream, stop! Don't open the door to strangers!"
Against her wishes, Cream opened the door, only to reveal a familiar blue hedgehog standing outside.
"Hey Cream, sorry for the delay! There was a bit of traffic, haha." Sonic joked, but noticed Cream was looking down, as if embarrassed by his presence. "Hey, don't tell me you're gonna back out of our plans!"
Cream didn't say a word. Amy, on the other hand, couldn't believe what she was seeing.
"...Sonic?"
"Huh? Amy? Wha-what are you doing here?"
Amy's face suddenly turned to a furious red, "I should be the one asking that question." Then, she grabbed Cream by the shoulder, "CREAMMMMM!"
"Okay, okay!" Cream broke out of Amy's grasp, "Mr. Sonic agreed to take me out today on an adventure, and I... I forgot to tell mama about it!"
Sonic felt a chill running through his spine, "oh, dear..."
Amy facepalmed. "Oh, Cream... why didn't you tell Vanilla that?"
Cream jumped right to hug Amy, tearing up, "I... I was afraid she would say no... I guess I wanted this adventure so so much..."
"It's fine, Cream." Amy comforted her, "but you can't hold things from your mother, you know that... you don't know if she would let you go out or not, but she'll certainly will not let you if you start hiding things from her."
The two stayed hugged for a bit, as Sonic awkwardly stared at them.
"That being said..." Amy broke the silence, "I haven't said no to it yet, and I'm in charge of you today."
Cream's eyes lightened up, "you... you are serious?"
"Yup, I could use some fresh air, and I guess you too. C'mon, go get yourself ready."
Cream stopped hugging Amy, and then happily nodded to her. "Yes! I'll be right back!"
Cream ran back to her bedroom, but Amy stood right where she was, leaning on the door frame with her arms crossed and looking directly at a Sonic sheepishly smiling back.
"So... an adventure, huh?" Amy fired. "You know that can get a bit dangerous out there."
"Well, yes... and no..." Sonic scratched the back of his head, "this adventure... is an amusement park... Adventure Park is its name, off the Golden Bay Zone... should be a pretty chill place."
"A PARK?!" Amy lost her cool for a moment, feeling incredibly upset that Sonic never picked a place for them to go out before.
Sonic took a step back, well, actually, two steps back before Amy calmed down again.
"It's fine, it's fine. I was getting tired of asking you out to the same places anyway."
"Amy..."
Just as the conversation got a lot more awkward, Cream returned from upstairs "Ms. Amy! Mr. Sonic! I'm ready! Uh... Mr. Sonic...? Are you alright? You look a bit pale..."
Sonic shook himself back to his normal cocky self in a super Sonic second.
"Pale? Ha... must be the breeze!" He gestured around, then at a nearby tree... that was completely still. "Alright, you ready for the adventure?"
Sonic turned around and Cream immediately jumped on his back so he can carry her. "Yes! ...hold on, a park?"
"The Adventure... Park." Amy added, still crossing her arms.
"Wait, a park? Mr. Sonic, I wanted to wreck some Eggman robots, you said that's the best thing in the world!"
Sonic raised a finger and gestured negatively, "no no, I told you that was way too dangerous! We're gonna do the second best thing in the world, play some dangerous yet controlled amusement park games!"
Cream let a frustrated sigh out, "okay... but what about Amy? Are you gonna carry her too, Mr. Sonic?"
Sonic turned around nervously, and looked back at Amy then down to his hands, "I... think I can do it."
"I can run there by myself."
Amy closed the door just after Cheese, and so the four of them began their way to Adventure... Park.
The sunny afternoon was the perfect set up for this adventure. The park was spread around the bay coast and offered an amazing view of the entire city from its dedicated looking spot, a massive tower sitting on the westernmost point of the bay.
Down on the ground level, Cream was totally amazed by the park's rollercoasters, bumper cars and many, many green spots surrounded by shops and carts. One cart in particular grabbed her attention.
"Oh, oh!" Cream exclaimed, holding on to Sonic's hand while pointing to a cart with the other, "I want some cotton candy!"
"No, Cream." He said, trying to be a bit more strict than last time they went out together, "Vanilla won't appreciate the fact I allowed you to have sugar before your vegetables!"
"Nah, it's fine. Go grab some, Cream." Amy replied over Sonic, still arms crossed, scanning the place around with her look.
"Yay!"
Cream and Cheese dashed to the cotton candy cart, as Sonic approached Amy a bit upset.
"Excuse me, I think I'm doing a good job taking care of Cream on my own." He pointed out.
"Excuse YOU, I'm the one left in charge by her own mother!"
"Yeah but I'm the one who told Cream about this adventure first!"
"And I already had plans for both of us before you came around, hmph!"
As they argued, Cream came back overjoyed holding her giant cotton candy as Cheese directly jumped into it, overjoyed as well.
"Hee hee, I'm back! Where to, now...? Oh... are you fighting?"
Both Sonic and Amy stood still for a moment, side by side, both with their arms crossed.
"Oh? It's nothing, Cream! Ha ha!" Sonic tried to look for something to talk about, "we're just... discussing what attraction we should head to first... yeah!"
"Aww," Cream lowered her cotton candy, searching for Cheese somewhere inside it, "don't you think they look cute when they fight, Cheese?"
"Chao! Chao!" Cheese gleefully replied.
Suddenly, Sonic and Amy lost their cool at the same time, letting out a big "WHAT?!" before turning away from each other, upset... and blushing.
"Yeah, they do! They look together, hee hee!" Cream continued, before setting her sights on the next attraction, "I wanna go to the bumper cars next!"
They followed Cream and Cheese, but keeping their distance from one another.
"We don't look cute together," they murmured.
Back to latin-dr-sonamy-trash: Okay okay, this is a very rough draft - written exclusively for this post, and not even spell-checked! I feel like there’s still sooooo much more to this one, but I’m already 1800+ words into it and I need some sort of self-control (well, not only that one lol) or else I’ll never post this ask haha
Also, I would not be a too many thots thot if I finished this one right here and now~~
But seriously, I think I have a solid grasp for this one, and I could actually return to it and finish it! There’s still the bumper cars bit, the rollercoaster bit, Eggman actually coming in and storming the place, and Sonic and Amy’s final reflection on the day (and maybe more? 👀), so, yeah, we’re just halfway done with this little SonAmy trash piece where our emotional support hedgehogs are a bit... grumpy at each other? 👀

A look into the multiverse chapter 6.
Aka the worst written chapter I've ever done. I hate the reacts for this one, feels... weak. Hope you guys enjoy it.
The theater screen lights up and carama begins to pan over a city during night time Citizens mingle down the sidewalks on evening strolls. Above them, a helicopter flies low between the buildings heading for something. A red orb of light appears to chase after it. Shortly thereafter, a flash of gray bounced between the building at high speeds landing on the roof of one. The gray blur was a young Mercury Black, a grin on his face as he looked over the city. He looked to be around 11-12 and his hair was spiker then normal. He had a pair of ears on his head and short tails.
"Ah,yeah! This is happening!" Mercury exclaimed smiling.
"Mercury? Oh no."Emerald said shaking her head afraid of the ego trip her panter might get from this universe.
"He's fast, and… so young." Ruby pointed out.
"What's happening and why is he a fanaus?" Yang asked.
"He's not. He has two traits." Blake pointed. "He looks like a hedgehog though.
The young boy turned to sounds of sirens, looked down to see four police cars rushing to an emergency with screeching tires. He jumps down just in time to see them disappear around the corner.
"What's going down there?'' he mutters to himself. He curls into a ball and rockets after the cars, rolling like a bowling ball.
"That's actually a cool move." Mercury pointed out with a grin.
The police cars have formed a perimeter in front of a large building. Two helicopters hover overhead with their searchlights on as an odd watery figure lands on a police car and stand in place without moving or making a sound.
"That's a interesting creature…" Salem gave a little smile cross her legs thinking of a grimm similar to it.
"You are completely surrounded! Surrender yourself!" officer yelled as the squad aim their guns at figure. It hop over the police squad and they take aim and fire. The bullets only drop to the ground after colliding with it, the aqua figure giving off a low growl.
"Oh, no! Our weapons are useless! Retreat! All personnel, fall back!" The officer cried, him and the rest of the squad running away, a few firing a few more rounds as they ran.
"So it's bulletproof as well? This creature gets more and more interesting." Salem's smile grew larger as she watched the creature in action.
Mercury lands on the car and grins, looking at the being in excitement.
"This could be fun!" He stated he jumps into the air and attacks the monster with a kick, hitting it in what seem to be it's faces knocking it into a car, denting it. Mercury smirks a bit and immediately gets hit by the car that he had sent it into. The boy lifts the car off himself, not seeing to care that he got hit by a car. He cruels into a ball and rams into the creature and soon after the creature starts to run away. Mercury had a look of disappointment of how easy the fight was and chased after the creature.
Come on, ya big drip! Where ya goin'?"
"Yeah Mini me. That was an easy and boring fight." Mercury said with a shake of his head..
"Such a disappointing creature." Salem mutters while uncrossing her legs."
"That 12 year old got hit by a freaking car, and his only reaction was to pick it up and throw it back." Weiss pointed out. "Does nothing think that's amazing for a 12 year without AURA?" When one no answered she just looked back at the screen and muttered to herself: "I guess not."
The creature falls through a drain getting away, Mercury snaps his fingers in frustration as the camera pans into the air and shows smirking, evilly as he looks down at the hedgehog.
"Foolish child. That was Chaos, God of Destruction! And soon my plans will be realized! Watts begins to cackle madly.
Salem raises an eyebrow at the sight of Watts and Chaos. "God of destruction? An unfitting name for such a weak creature."
The scene cuts to Mercury lounging near a pool, sleeping as he hears a noise of a plane. He turns to see a younger Oscar flying out of control.
"Hey look another tiny Oscar!" Nora cooed at the sight of the farmboy." Oscar blush a bit in embarrassment.
"Why is he flying a biplane?" Ren asked.
"Tails?" He asked no one in confusion. His eye widen as he watch out Oscar's plan begans to pummel toward the ground. "Watch out! You're gonna crash! AHHH!" Oscar's plane crashs on the beach and Mercury facepalms groaning a bit. "Oh Tails. What am I gonna do with you?" Mercury curl into a ball again in a blink of an eyes rockets towards where Oscar had crash landed. He sees two legs poking out of the ground and grabs one, yanking the boy out of the sand and giving a closer look at Oscar. He was a fox, but a fox with two tails instead of one and he looked to be around 8.
Blake's stares a bit a Oscar's tails. "That's…. New. "
"Yeah a 8 year old flying a biplane is new right Blake?" Ruby said.
"I think she meant the fact the Oscars had two tails Ruby." Jaune replied.
Oscar blinks a few times and grins at the sight of his friend.
"Oh hey Sonic! Long Time no see huh?" He said casually.
"A child his age surviving a plane crash and only casually reacting to it. He must be very durable." Winter mused to herself.
"Hey Tails." Mercury greeted back, placing Oscar on his feet. "What happened there? You're too good of a pilot to make such a sloppy landing.
Oscar rubs his head. "That was a test run using a new prototype propulsion system. It's got a few bugs to iron out." Mercury raises an eyebrow. "Okay…... A Lot of bugs."
"No shit kid." Mercury snarks
" Why not just use my plane, the Tornado?"
"Thanks, but you gotta check out my newest power supply! Ta dahhh!" Oscar pulls a purple looking gem.
"WHOA! A Chaos Emerald!" Mercury looked it over in astosment.
"Oscar smiles a bit. "Yep! I just happened to find one of the 7 Emeralds during one of my test flights. This thing has unlimited powers, ya know... So I figured, why not use it to power my plane. Super charged! You gotta come over my workshop, Sonic! I've got something I've gotta show you! It's in the Mystic Ruins. The fastest way is by train. Let's go!"
The scene cuts to Mercury and Oscar running in a field when a voice stops them in their place.
"Ha ha ha ha! If it isn't !" Watts descended down in an egg shaped pod grinning maniacally. Oscar's tails stiffen in fear and he hides behind Mercury. Mercury however just looks at Watts with a grin.
Look! It's a giant talking egg!
Yang begins to laugh hard. "He does look like an egg!"
Salem didn't say anything but quietly laugh to herself, not seeing Ozpin catching her laugh with a bit of shock before quickly turning back to the show.
"Silence! I am , the greatest scientific genius in the world!" Watts growled
"Whatever you say, Eggman!" Mercury replied with a roll of his eyes and a dismal wave of his hand.
"Damn. Kid's got balls." Qrow said.
"Hell yeah I do. I'm always badass." Mercury boosted.
"Enough! I've got big plans and now I'm gonna put them to work!"
"You're always up to no good. Now what d'ya want?" Oscar piped up from behind Mercury. Watts glared at Oscar, causing the fox cub to to flinch and hide behind Mercury. Watts begins to rise higher in his pod.
"Awww. He scared little fox Oscar." Nora cooed again.
"I want all the Chaos Emeralds. Better not interfere! Or else!" Watts said looking down at the two.
"Or else what wimp?" Mercury taunted.
"Or else I'll take them from you by force... the hard way!" Watts goes behind the cliff and raise with his pod turning into a hornet like form.
It flies after the two firing missile that Mercury and Oscar dodge without any problems. Watts snarls as he attempts to ram into Mercury, the boy hopping over the machine, causing it to get stuck in the ground. Mercury land on his feet and curls into a ball, rocketing into Watts' machine knocking it loose from the ground. Watts flies around again firing more missiles at Mercury, But he plays hopscotch on each missile, About to reach the Egg hornet before Watts smiles as Mercury falls for his trap.
"Felt for it fool!" Watts cried and he powered the machine up for another ram attack. Before he made contact with Mercury's body, in a quick blur Oscar grabbed Mercury's hand and flew away from the attack, using his two tails as like helicopter blades to fly.
"Holy shit, he can fly?" Yang asked in surprised."
"Why the hell does he need a plane then?" Qrow asked being surprised as well.
Watts screamed in rage as he got stuck in the ground again. Mercury look up at Oscar and smiled.
"Nice job Tails now throw me so we can end this!"
Oscar smiled and threw Mercury as hard as he could. Mercury curls into a ball again and rams into Watts machine breaking it down. Oscar lands next to Mercury and they look over their work.
"Well, that wasn't so hard!" Mercury turned and ruffled Oscar's hair. Good work Tails!"
Watts fake being unconscious for a time and then let out a :Aha!" as giant claw came out of his machine and grabbed the chaos emerald Oscar's person. TThe two look in horror as Watts laughed himself silly. "Come on Chaos, time to eat!" The same creature Mercury fought last night appears and Watts give it the Chaos emerald, The creature name Chaos growing bigger. Watts look over the creature in glee. " Ooooh, yes! It's just as the stone tablets predicted. Ha ha ha ha ha! His strength increases every time I feed him a Chaos Emerald! With all 7 Emeralds in him, he'll be invincible! And work for me! Together, we'll destroy Station Square! And on its ruins, I will build Wattsland, the ultimate city! Where I will rule it all! Come on Chaos! Let's find another Emerald, shall we?" And with that Watts teleported away with Chaos." And with that, Watts and Chaos teleport away.
"So if he eats more of those gems he gets stronger? That doesn't sound good!"
Salem's interest in the creature was back and she was excited to see more of it.
The end!
.
See? This is the weakest I've done by myself.

Scars You Can’t See - Chapter 8
Chapter title: Countdown
Word count: about 3500 words
Author’s Note: I tried to make this one slightly more light-hearted, but we’ll see if that worked out! Also writing fight scenes is difficult.
First | Previous | Next
...
At this rate, it was honestly a miracle that Tails hadn’t had to buy a new carpet yet.
Thankfully for Sonic’s sanity, his little brother’s determination to preserve their house meant that he’d been given lots of free rein to run around outside whenever he felt like leaving. He’d also been given fewer chores lately, as Tails knew from experience that Sonic did not thrive on order and routine like he did.
It had been three days since their visit from G.U.N. and their last contact from Omega- and Team Dark in general. Though he never said as much, Sonic was really having an issue with the fact that Tails had gotten to contact his friend twice by now, while he hadn’t heard from Shadow in ages. He tried his best not to worry, but it had just been such a long time since he’d spoken with the other hedgehog.
And Omega had said that Shadow was struggling...had practically had to relive one of his most traumatic memories….
Sonic decided that he didn’t care about any of the hybrid’s usual thoughts about expressing emotions or vulnerability- the second he got to see Shadow for real, that guy wouldn’t be able to escape the hug he had coming. The hero was practically determined to drag his friend (because they were friends, no matter what Shadow might say) to a therapist, too, since Chaos knew the guy needed it.
The blue hedgehog slowed down considerably and began to stalk through the forest instead, trying to get the majority of his anger out through his legs and movement. It wouldn’t do for Tails to see him like this…
Sonic’s thoughts circled back to how his hands were tied by what he’d promised Shadow- the hybrid had been so insistent, but now Sonic regretted agreeing not to go after G.U.N. Truthfully, the only reason he hadn’t broken his promise already was because while Tails was an incredibly clever and talented person, he could never forgive himself if the young fox got hurt. Otherwise, he would absolutely have long since blasted into G.U.N.’s headquarters, grabbed the commander by the front of his military uniform and told him in no uncertain terms that he had better stop hunting Team Dark and he’d better do it immediately. The hero had had enough of his friends suffering while he was forced to sit safe at home and wait.
His phone buzzed then, pulling him out of his tangled web of thoughts. Tugging it out of his windswept mess of quills, he saw that it was Tails calling and of course picked up immediately.
“Yeah, lil’ bro, what’s up?” he asked, hoping that most of the frustration had left his voice by now.
“Uh, Sonic?” the fox said, sounding pretty tense himself. “Since those agents came to our house a couple of days ago, I managed to hack into G.U.N.’s main server and now I can see some of what they’re doing- mostly where the organisation's sending people and all that.”
“Epic!” Sonic cheered. He began to wonder- could they use this to help their fugitive friends?
“Well, yeah, it would be...except that they’re sending an entire squad to our house. Like, right now.”
His grin froze in place. A squad of soldiers? The hero almost felt a grim sort of delight in that- finally, he’d be able to vent some of his frustration on the organization that had caused this whole mess. He hoped the house would remain standing, though. Tails had built it around a tree from scratch and was really proud of it.
Sonic decided he’d work that out once he got home, and just a moment later, a sonic boom exploded across the landscape as he took off.
Once the hero arrived at home, the duo began to set up the house’s various defense mechanisms- since they were a) very famous, b) hated by one of the most powerful supervillains in the world and c) one of them was an engineer, it was only natural that the house would be at least as well defended as a high-security bank vault. Sonic practically bounced around the house as he helped activate certain parts of their machinery, nervous tension running high. G.U.N. wasn’t going to be pulling any punches this time, he was sure of it.
Tails, by contrast, was absolutely calm. The fox was ridiculously mature for his age, and Sonic suspected that he instinctively knew by now when he needed to counteract his elder brother’s wild energy. Once everything was set up, the two built a makeshift barricade as a last resort at the front door, and waited.
Thankfully for Tails’s sanity, it didn’t take long for the trucks to arrive.
As the three trailer trucks parked outside his house, ten soldiers poured out of each one, while several technicians began to set up some sort of weird-looking prototype laser device. The fox laughed for a second at the sight of it in a way that sent a few chills down Sonic’s spine. His brother could be downright terrifying at times.
Tails scoffed. “Please. That laser doesn’t have the power output to break my shields….wait.
“What the heck?”
The four technicians had begun to hook up the laser to- of all things- one of Eggman’s old power cores that he usually used in his bases.
The young engineer tugged at his tails in frustration. “That’s so dumb! Sure, it might boost the laser’s strength, but there’s at least a twenty percent chance it’ll blow up in their faces! A small machine like that wasn’t made to withstand the amount of power it takes to charge an entire Eggman base!”
Sonic blinked and looked at his brother. “Those aren’t bad odds….”
“They aren’t good ones, either! I’d never let someone use a creation of mine with a one in five chance of failure. It’s just embarrassing! And it shows how far behind their engineers are!” Tails’s fur was fluffed up in outrage and irritation.
The hero almost laughed. “That’s what you complain about first? Not the fact that they’re gonna try and blow up our house?” he asked, his tone light. He snatched up the fox and rushed them both away from the front door as a precaution- that was definitely going to be their first target.
Sonic pushed Tails into the highest room in the house, before launching himself out the window and curling up into a deadly sphere of razor-sharp spikes. He vaguely heard one soldier yell something in a panicked voice, but didn’t pay much attention to it. He slammed into the ground, still in a ball, and tore off towards the laser cannon at top speed, leaving a cloud of dust behind him as he went.
Irritatingly, the soldiers’ gunfire spattered all around the cannon, making it impossible to tear the thing apart. Sparks flew across the ground as Sonic careened around it before jumping up into a running stance and taking off in their direction. The air snapped around him as he broke the sound barrier and landed a furious kick on one of the trucks, denting the heavy steel and flipping it onto its side.
Sonic stumbled as a loud explosion rocked the ground, but kept sprinting after a glance assured him that Tails’s shields had held against the blast. The hedgehog smacked one man’s rifle out of his hand, the sheer speed of the blow bending it in half (and was almost certain he heard a distinct ‘why do we keep fighting this guy with guns?’) before he moved on.
A dozen soldiers were on the ground either unconscious or groaning in pain by the time someone thought to radio for reinforcements- which they’d apparently had on standby ready to be helicoptered in. The blue blur wasn’t sure whether this high estimation of his fighting skills was something he should be proud of...or not.
The fur prickled on the back of Sonic’s neck as a humming noise filled the air.
A moment later, he threw himself to the ground as a red-hot laser carved a wide arc above him, slicing through the area where his midriff was a few seconds ago. He heard a faint yell of outrage from inside the house above all the noise, and stuck out his arm for a quick thumbs-up to Tails.
A couple of seconds later, one very familiar and well-used earpiece landed in the dirt next to him as the laser swung back across the battlefield to refocus on their shields. Sonic shoved it into one blue ear before running up the side of the second truck and backflipping to land behind several soldiers. “Miss me, guys?” he asked smugly, before smirking and delivering several well-placed blows to said soldiers’ kneecaps that left all three doubled over on the ground. None of them had even seen him as he moved, which was really a testament to Sonic’s skill.
Tails’s voice crackled to life in his ear as he sent another person flying. “Awesome job! By the way, they’ve already fired the cannon three times, so either their luck is going to be great with this next one, or else…”
The cannon’s shot breached the shields, but Sonic noticed as he ran that its casing was burning red-hot, and-
A shockwave blasted out from the cannon, making all four of its attendants fly into the air, yet in the seconds before they hit the ground, Sonic had time to:
Heave a lengthy sigh at their overestimation of the cannon.
Decide that even if they were working for G.U.N., a life was still a life.
Run around and safely place all four of them inside of a truck...
And avoid the explosion as it tore up the ground within a ten-foot radius of the machine.
(The hero had known for quite some time that being the fastest thing alive meant that he could do some really cool tricks.)
Dirt exploded in all directions, leaving a crater and a smoking lump of metal on the ground. Unfortunately, though, the house’s main defenses were down, and any second now, the helicopter would be there with enough soldiers to take out the rest. And his little brother was still inside...
As though he’d heard the hedgehog’s thoughts, Tails’s voice crackled to life through the speaker. “Sonic! The reinforcements are almost here- we can’t take them all, even if I come out there!”
“Not happening, pal, not unless you’ve got your mech.” Sonic insisted, putting on his ‘big brother’ voice. “Hey, wait- where’re they going?” he asked suddenly, watching as the remaining soldiers retreated to take cover behind one of their trucks. That wouldn’t really help them, but Sonic knew that they knew he couldn’t take the whole organization on by himself.
“They’re waiting it out until the rest arrive...but we won’t be here by then.” Tails said, sounding confident.
“And why’s that, pal?” He folded his arms, keeping one eye on the soldiers.
“Because-” and here Sonic suddenly heard a loud roaring noise coming from the back of the house, “-we’re going to get out of here!”
That was when the Tornado soared directly over their heads.
The G.U.N. soldiers certainly tried to shoot the plane down, but of course, they couldn’t keep up with Tails’s expert flying. Bullets embedded themselves into nothing but trees as it flew away into the forest, a blue streak taking off after it at top speed. Sonic kept up with the red biplane easily, just waiting for the right moment to...there!
He launched himself off a particularly well-placed branch, flinging himself high into the air before landing perfectly on the wing of the plane. “Alright, Tails,” he yelled, trying to make himself heard over the roar of the engine, “where to now?”
The kitsune winced and tapped his ear. “Earpiece, remember?” he asked, and Sonic cringed, realizing that he had forgotten what it was like to wear the little speaker while on the Tornado.
“Ahah, gotcha.” he said sheepishly. “So?”
Tails sighed, but not in an irritated manner. “Angel Island- nobody can find it if Knuckles wants to stay hidden. I called him up while you were out front and he said we could crash there.”
“Oh, sweet!” Sonic said happily. “It’ll be like a sleep...over…”
He trailed off weakly, suddenly remembering their home. “Sorry about the house, pal...I know ya worked hard on it.” The hero ran a hand through his quills, unwilling to meet the other’s eyes.
“It’s okay.” Tails said bravely. “I brought a few things-” he gestured to the backseat- “including all my blueprints, so I can always build us another. And besides…” here he leaned forward, catching Sonic’s eye, “home is wherever we are, so long as we’re together.”
The blue blur quickly nodded before looking down pointedly at the biplane’s wing, hoping strongly that Tails didn’t notice that his eyes had begun to glisten just a little more than usual.
(He did, though.)
Knuckles was happy to see them, of course, if a little less obviously so than usual due to the circumstances that had forced the two into this situation. The guardian immediately began to move the island to a new area where it would be hidden from view, while Sonic and Tails just relaxed and looked through the various items that the latter had thought to bring: a spare pair of shoes for Sonic, a toolbox and the aforementioned blueprints for Tails, plenty of food for the three of them, and of course lots of important technology.
As Tails left to go check on Knuckles, the blue hedgehog stretched out on the grass and heaved a deep sigh. What he’d give to know how Team Dark was doing right now…
Two days later, he found out.
The very moment that the team released the video, all three inhabitants of Angel Island sat down to watch it on Tails’s screen. The fox had been constantly monitoring the Internet for anything about the other team, especially their social media, so of course he was alerted the second anything came up.
Before they started the video, the hero had been vibrating with energy.
By the end of the section about the ARK, he was completely still, his eyes as wide as they could go.
Tails paused the video there, as the massive wave of responses was already starting to flow. Sonic blinked back to reality to discover that his nails had nearly torn holes through his gloves- that was how tightly he was clenching his fists. He rolled his shoulders, trying to get the tension to leave his body, but he couldn’t stop thinking.
How in the name of Chaos did Shadow watch that?
They agreed that Tails would watch the rest while the other two stepped up to support their friends, and support they certainly did. Both of their tempers were running hot, and more than once the fox, glancing over their shoulders, had to remind them that caps lock was not going to be helpful right now.
Not long after Team Dark had stopped responding to questions, Sonic and Knuckles sat back down to view the other part of the video. They watched in shock as the peace and power of that meeting was violated, people arrested just like that, and yet neither of them had heard anything about this event.
Immediately afterwards, the latter got right back onto his phone and started typing out absolutely vicious responses to some of the more ridiculous conspiracy theorists. His violet eyes were narrowed in anger as he tore into their ideas- while he might not be able to convince the people themselves, he could hopefully stop more from being sucked in.
Sonic, meanwhile, just lay half on his side in the grass for a minute, trying to restrain the urge to scream. Why hadn’t he done more damage to G.U.N. when he’d had the chance? Why hadn’t he been able to see that this ran so deep?
Sonic turned his head to the side to look at his brother. “Tails?” he asked, trying to keep his voice under control. “Where’s Team Dark gonna go next, d’ya think?”
The kitsune frowned. “I don’t know...but if I had to guess, they’re probably trying to figure out how deep this whole problem goes. That’s what I think we’d do if we were in that situation, at any rate. To find that kind of stuff, though, they’d have to head straight to Central City and hack directly into G.U.N.’s mainframe...which would be incredibly risky on a good day.”
Sonic shot upright. “What if they are gonna do that next?”
Tails shook his head vehemently. “After running away from the entire organization for so long? That’d practically be a suicide mission! Even if they somehow managed to escape with the information, G.U.N. would be able to hunt them down in no time!”
The two brothers stared at each other. “But that sounds like them….doesn’t it.” Tails sighed, looking down at the grass.
“Knux!” Sonic yelled, rushing over to where the guardian sat. “We have to hang around Central City, man. If the team’s gonna head anywhere, it’ll be there. And if they’ll be in that much trouble by the time they get out of there, we have to be there to pick them up.”
Knuckles leveled him with a stare so flat it put sheets of paper to shame. “Sonic. Literally three days ago, I helped you guys escape G.U.N. and we have been hiding ever since. And now you want me to move my island, with the last ruins of my tribe’s temple and my Master Emerald, within reach of an organization that would give anything to be able to take it all for their scientists to look at.
“No. Way.”
The hedgehog widened his stance. “Knuckles.” he began, stabbing a finger at the ground for emphasis. “Literally ten days ago, Team Dark escaped G.U.N. all by themselves and have been on their own ever since. And now you want us to leave our friends, and remember, your girlfriend at the mercy of that organization, for the sake of a giant rock.
“Yes way. Absolutely.”
Knuckles scowled and blushed, avoiding Sonic’s stare after that mention of Rouge. “I guess….if we stayed away from the city itself and out of sight….”
Tails decided that this was a slightly safer moment to chime in. “I’ll try and monitor the airwaves in the area- we can move away if we think they’ve noticed us!”
“All of this is assuming that they’re even actually there.” the echidna replied, seeming slightly irritated at being outnumbered.
“It isn’t the most logical place for them to go.” Tails agreed. “It’s ridiculously dangerous, and G.U.N. probably knows that. But, it’s also their most powerful building, which means that it’s going to have all of the more recent files there.
“While this video is some damaging evidence, it’s not nearly enough to permanently damage their standing overall...they definitely have the cash to sneak out of this level of bad press. A bigger release- now that we know this isn’t a one-time event- is definitely the best way to deal with them. And what better way to do it than to find all their super-secret files at the source?”
Sonic sighed. “Plus, I’ve got a feeling G.U.N.’s gonna underestimate that team’s habit of suffering to save others.” His shoulders sagged slightly at the thought, but he felt a little bit of the weight lift off of them when Tails leaned against him slightly with an understanding look.
The echidna watched them sympathetically for a moment before remembering that he was supposed to be arguing against them. “Well, why don’t they just go back to whatever place they busted first? That sure wasn’t in Central City.”
Sonic rolled his eyes. “It’s ‘cause they’d be expecting them there, knucklehead. Never return to the scene of the crime. That’s what they say in all the TV shows, right, Tails?”
“Well, while this is not a TV show, Sonic, you’re right.” the kitsune said, sighing. “That’s another reason for them to go to Central City.
Knuckles gave a mixture of a sigh and a growl, stalking back to the altar where the Master Emerald floated. “Fine. But if this goes south, I am blaming your-” he pointed a vicious finger at Sonic- “spiky butt for all of it.”
The hero grinned at his friend in a way he knew got under his spines, and was rewarded with a huff and another grumble. Yet the island still began to move, shifting eastward from the center of the country towards Central City.
Hold on, guys. Sonic thought, feeling properly hopeful for the first time in over a week. We’re on our way.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) Spoiler Free Review
Ah yes, Sonic the Hedgehog. The movie that the first trailer convinced us would be a train-wreck...until they actually listened to fans and fixed things.
First off, let me elaborate on that: I’ve heard people saying that Paramount was responsible for the original design in an attempt to reach a wider audience. I can’t find a source, so take this with a grain of salt, but having seen the movie? I can totally buy it because one thing is abundantly clear: the filmmakers know Sonic the Hedgehog. Oh boy, do they know Sonic the Hedgehog.
I found myself smiling at several points in this film when I noticed a very clever nod to the video games that show the creators care about this franchise. The fights honestly feel like mini boss and boss fights from the video games with how they’re filmed. But the good parts of this movie don’t stop there.
You see, an adaptation needs to do two things: it needs to be faithful to the source material, but it needs to do its own thing. And this movie does. Sonic and Robotnik feel like themselves, but are both placed in situations we’re not used to seeing them in. It’s a nice take on them and made both very engaging to be in.
Speaking of which, Robotnik deserves special mention. Yes, Jim Carrey does not look like Dr. Eggman, but is he a good Eggman? Yes. Yes, he is. This is very much a case of an actor who was cast based on performance, not on looks. Though as the trailers show, he does gradually come to resemble the doctor more and more as the film goes on. The best part of this performance, however, is that Carrey isn’t playing a joke villain here. Robotnik is over the top, funny, and comical at times...but he’s also a legit threat who you can take seriously as such when he should be. And Jim Carrey manages that to a T. This Robotnik can be legitimate threatening and you can buy him as a threat. You can see why our protagonists should be worried about this guy. This is a villain that can make you laugh, but also make you worry about our heroes’ safety. This shouldn’t be surprising, given Carrey, while known for his comedy, has played roles calling for him to be frightening and dangerous before.
As for Sonic himself, I can’t go too far into it as there are a lot of spoilers, but he was well done. His actor does a good job of sounding like Sonic, and there’s a lot of heart here. The redesign is great and looks like the character. But most importantly, this is SONIC’S movie. The human cast do have a major role in the film, yes, but our human lead is both entertaining, and more of a Supporting Protagonist than the main protagonist. This film is a bout Sonic, and it feels so good to be able to say that.
Lastly, I have to make a point on that redesign: this required the movie to be delayed for several months and several million dollars added to the budget to fix something for the fans. I think this film deserved my money solely for that fact, because if we want Hollywood to put the fans first, we need to show them it’s profitable.
The movie isn’t perfect, what movie is? But as a Sonic the Hedgehog movie? It’s great and well worth a watch.

Prompt: (AU)
It wasn't long until Amil started acting strange again. He rushed around, doing chores, cleaning, and cooking for the gang. He found nothing wrong with a man doing some work for his homies, especially when his friends all had different styles when it came to house upkeep.
"Amil... I told you! I'll get to the dishes tomorrow..." Tails, with his hands up in hopes to convince Amil to take it easy by his sink, slowly lowered them in thanks as Amil shook his head vigorously.
"No can do, buddy!" Amil sparked with life, doing nothing half-heartedly. "You've been working hard on that new X-Tornado upgrade, right? Still thinking of the classic blue, steel grey, and yellow?"
"A-actually, I was thinking about using some red a bit too." Tails stepped back and leaned on his toes a bit, "Geez, Amil, you really know how to do these things awful well." Putting his hands behind his back, he sweetly watched Amil clean and then curiously looked up at him. "Why do you care so much about it?"
Amil shrugged, "I don't know... I... I like to keep things nice. Not that you do a bad job or anything!" he immediately quieted any fears of judgement Tails may make on that comment, gesturing his hand back to stop the misunderstanding in case it took place. "I just mean that a happy looking home makes for a happy pair of shoes!" he mused, "Isn't that the saying?"
Tails laughed, "Not any that I’ve heard! But if it means that much to you, then I'll gladly let you help me out!" he swayed his tails. "Oh, that reminds me. You used to talk about girls and stuff a lot, have you finally found one?" he put his finger a bit close to his mouth.
Amil fumbled slightly with a dish, but gently caught it's slippery surface and sighed in relief. "W-what makes you say that, Tails..?" He looked away, a bit flustered.
"Well..." Tails turned away a moment, "You've just been really quiet lately about it... we all know you get lonely for companionship kinda fast... so I thought maybe you had found someone. Does this mean you'll get married and leave us behind to deal with Eggman and we'll have to save the world without you?" He turned back and tilted his head towards Amil, but Amil squirted the sink's expandable hose at his face, so he wouldn't see his jumbled expression.
It extended at just the right length, and Tails bubbled through the water before pulling back, moving his hands out to try and blindly look for a towel to dry his face off.
"That's none of anyone's concern, Tails." He handed him the towel he was searching for, as Tails gave an open-smile at feeling it and rubbed off his face. "Besides... I may not get married..." Amil's heart slightly twinged at admitting it. "I just don't think I'll find anyone... and besides, what would you, Knuckles, and Sonic do without me!" He smiled warmly at the thought of spending his life with a team who all cared about each other, but Tails just peeked his head out from the small hand-towel he was using.
"Ohh..? That's kinda good, cause that means you can do my dishes forever now, right?" He grinned but Amil reached behind him and grabbed his head into a noogie, using the sponge to grind into his head.
"Now, let's get those naughty thoughts cleaned out of your head, eh?" He joked, as Tails struggled and tapped his tails against his back. "Uncle, uncle!!" Tails cried out and so Amil let him go.
Tails rose up into the air, smirking at an idea as Amil went to scold him, his guard completely down...
"Now Tails, it's rude to try and peer into someone else's love life-AHHH!!!" Amil's head was shoved into the soapy water as Tails laughed, sitting on his shoulders and kicking his legs out before jumping off and dashing away.
"Says the guy who's still dreaming about a harem and kids!" Tails stretched the sides of his cheeks out, wiggling his tongue mockingly towards Amil for him to chase him.
"Grr..! IT'S NOT A HAREM! They're too hard to handle and you can't please everyone and I hate being a bad guy!" he quickly spoke this out as his fists shook and he quickly wiped his face off with the same hand-towel Tails had tossed. He summoned his hammer and charged after Tails, grinning at the friendly spar with his figurative brother figure.
After roughhousing and laughing so much, Tails and Amil rolled into a batch of flowers, laughing and laughing until Tails finally looked up into the sky.
His eyes twinkled a moment, and then he placed his hands on his stomach, "You know... I don't mind talking about girls so much anymore..."
Amil slowly stopped laughing, turning in confusion to look at Tails, before his heart softened at what the fox boy was saying.
Tails's expression turned gentle and sincere, looking from the sky back down to his home. "...I know Sonic isn't the best to talk about it with but... I don't mind." He leaned his head up to look at Amil, inviting him to share his feelings.
Amil was more than thankful for the offer, and turned to swoop his arm up over his eyes and bask a moment in the sunny day. He sighed, "I still want a family..."
"...But?" Tails raised his eyebrows, smiling sweetly to encourage Amil on.
"...But." He flopped the arm down.
"Oh... You took that 'don't leave us', kinda seriously... huh?" Tails felt a bit bad, but Amil looked down and rose his torso up, scruffing up Tails's head and ruffling his hair there, making the 10-year old laugh.
"It's okay, buddy! Besides,... there probably isn't a perfect girl out there for me anyway..." Amil felt a sorrow pass through him, but it slowly trinkled off and he was fine again.
But Tails saw it... he got up too, hitting his chest, "You will. If any of us have love in our future, it's gotta be you, for sure." He nodded and turned back to the sky, "Have you wished on stars yet?" He joked, and Amil knew he didn't actually believe in that.
"Don't tease me." Amil hit his shoulder and Tails laughed. But he had tried Tarot Reading... At least, by what he deemed an expert, but all they said was that the future is littered with possibilities.
But the wait seemed never-ending...
"Hey, if I meet a girl... will you let me talk to you about it?"
It was something that meant more to Amil than Tails knew.
"Of course." His eyes shone and glistened with sea hitting the cliff-side of where Tails's home was stationed, and off in the distance--was Angel Island.
The wind beat fast as Tails flew Amil over to the Master Emerald, letting him fall from his arms as he landed in a very agile and loose-manner. Amil was pretty good acrobatically, he could have been a real contender for the olympic gymnastic games, but would only join if Sonic was going.
"Thanks, Tails!" Amil waved his friend off, and then headed towards Knuckles, "Guard duty! Shift's up!" Amil clapped to wake up Knuckles, who had a few butterflies resting on him as his stomach moved slightly up and down, but so gentle that the local wildlife had curled up next to him or landed to rest on him.
They all looked up from their nap and took off with Amil's clapping, and Knuckles blinked his eyes a few times before looking down at Amil. "Eh, you're early." Knuckles yawned. "I thought training wasn't until the weekend?"
"Week days, but I can see your confusion." Amil placed his hands on his hips, but a little chao reached up and pulled on his boot's socks. "Huh? Aww..." He took a knee and petted the sweet chao as it wanted, its little pudgy arms pushing together and turning to the side as a heart morphed from the yellow ball on its head. "And besides, we don't have to train today. We can just talk too. Haha." he was instantly charmed as the chao flew up and clasped his face, rubbing its head against his.
Little animated hearts flew around Amil as he had a soft spot for cute and adorable things, and put his hands up to cradle the chao in his arms and rubbed his head lightly back against his own.
While Amil was enamored by the cuddly creature, Knuckles groaned, "Oh no. None of that 'romance' stuff!" He strained a bit to get up but finally did so, stretching out some of the kinks that had formed from sleeping with his neck and half his back up against the Master Emerald.
"That's all you ever talk about!"
Amil looked up from the cuddles with the cute chao, wiggling his fingers to tickle his belly as he held it giggling in his hand, before turning back to Knuckles, "Huh?"
"You're not even paying attention..." Knuckles sweatdropped, seeing him playing with the many chao that began to form around him, desperate for the attention that none of the other members so freely gave in such large quantities. "But they sure do love ya." Knuckles breathed out from his nose, as though glad to see that his tough, strong friend was as gentle and sweet in his heart towards all things as he should be.
Amil gave love to each and everyone of the chao, "I just love... loving! Is all." He also seemed a bit ashamed to say that, but Knuckles shook his head.
"Nah, a man should love. That's how he knows who to protect, and what's worth fighting for." Knuckles put his gloved fists to his hips, before leaning forward and then back to wink a sign of approval to Amil.
"...Thank you." Amil stared gratefully at Knuckles.
"Eh, don't sweat it. Let's toughen up those muscles so your heart can beat just as fierce as those emotions of yours!" Knuckles slammed a fist into his open hand, which shook Amil.
"R-really? I thought I could play with the chao a little more while you woke up a bit? Y-y-you know, get ready and stuff?" Amil didn't feel like getting sucker punched in the gut or thrown half-way across the island by a fist to the face anymore...
Knuckles's face turned into a wicked sense of pleasure, "Nope, I'm all fired up..." he looked like a beating was coming to Amil...
Amil gulped, getting up and fanning the chao back and away so they wouldn't get hurt. "B-b-but don't you want some food first?! Can't fight on an empty stomach?" he flinched when Knuckles moved forward, smirking widely and making a sound like he was gonna come at him. "I-I'll even cook!" Amil summoned his hammer and prepared to flinch and dodge.
"...You will, huh?" Knuckles pulled back, "Alright! Who wants to punch a sap like you so early in the morning, anyway!?" Knuckles turned away, "Besides," he rubbed his white boxer-glove under his nose. "You're more of a lover than a fighter... Who's the next lucky lady on the list then?" he walked back over to the Master Emerald, rubbing it to get some dust off that the wind had blown on it.
"H-huh?" Amil blinked a bit, "Lucky... Lady..?"
"You haven't so much as piped up about a dame in a long time." Knuckles hoisted the Master Emerald up, showing some supreme strength as he shook the rest of the dust off, then gently lowered it back down, and admired it with his hand up by his chin. After a few nods of approval, he looked back to Amil with his arms folded, "Sonic and Tails mentioned it. You haven't been yourself lately, and I haven't heard so much as a utter about the future from you in quite some time. So? Who is she? Any bit cute, this one? Heh heh..." Knuckles sneered, "I bet she has six toes to be interested in a lovesick loser like you, hahaha!" he joked, but Amil just frowned in annoyance.
"That's it!" he charged at him, and the two tuffed it out for a while.
Knuckles threw him down the hill, jumping to slide down it himself as Amil tumbled harshly down it's surface. Flying down the rocky terrain, Knuckles raised an eyebrow to Amil, "Huh, she's that cute that you won't even tell your friends about HHEERRR!!" he shoved a fist into the ground to disrupt the falling, but as Amil rose into the air, he quickly smiled back to Knuckles.
"No girl! No love interest!" he curled up and shot into Knuckles.
Ricocheting off, Knuckles seemed a bit confused and worried, surprised he would even say that. "Really? Ha, ho, ha. No one?" he kept hitting back up against the cliff as he slid down before he reached back and braced himself against a tree. "Hrrr... Then why the sudden shift?" Knuckles seemed to be asking the same questions Tails had.
Amil uncurled and went in for a swing of his hammer, "And how about Rouge, huuuhh!??!!"
Knuckles flinched in a blush, grabbing his hammer with both hands and having a ripple effect through the air between them at the amount of power they both possessed.
"Grr... I hate that stinkin' Bat Girl!" he was losing the straining battle... and Amil pushed down even harder, gaining his center back.
"If that was the case, then why do you let her try and steal the Master Emerald from under your nose?" he cooed, tauntingly.
"RAAHHH, THAT'S NEVER ON PURPOSE!" Knuckles found his hidden strength reserve and shoved Amil off and to the ground.
Amil back-flipped and got up for more, "Now who's talkin'?" Amil looked finally back into the right attitude.
Knuckles jumped high into the air to come down on him too, and now, Amil was the one struggling with his full force slamming against his hammer.
"Get your stance up to date!" Knuckles instructed.
"I'm trying to work up the nerve to ask girls first!" Amil teased, and threw him off.
Knuckles skidded against the ground, squinting one eye shut with a proud smile. "Not bad... looks like you haven't given up on love quite yet." He got back up, dusting himself off. "Well, if you've got what it takes, be a man and show me how'd you fight and protect a girl!" he got ready for more, urging Amil on.
Amil got into a fighting stance, "I'm just warming up... but as long as I have all of you with me... I'll never be lonely... and I won't feel the need for one." He ducked his head into the pose and swung his hammer as far back as possible.
Knuckles continued his proud smile, but looked up more in respect to his friend.
'That's right... Sonic can be my hero.' He closed his eyes a moment, 'Tails can be my brother... and Knuckles, my dear friend and teacher. We're all loved. I just need to see it more in the people around me.' he opened his eyes again, "I'll never give up..!" He took one amazingly fast and powerful step forward to Knuckles, then another as he scaled the distance between them in seconds. "I've found my family!!!" He pulled his hammer from being so tightly and fully swung back around him that when it was released, jammed into Knuckles's defending arm, making him wince in the pain before flinging him back.
"Gah!" he was continually hammered into trees that snapped in half, as Amil finally stopped and pulled out some bandages, suddenly turning sweet and cute again.
"Would you like the mint-flavored or the lollipop-flavored?" He teased, blinking innocently like a male nurse before attending Knuckles as swirls filled his eyes, and then ripped out the bandages and began working without mercy on him.
"Ye-ow! Ahh! Heeeyyy!!! Oph!" Knuckles snapped out of it and protested, but Amil shoved the minty gummy into his mouth and he piped down and chewed... subdued.
(I hope you like how I pictured a male Amy! and how I gave Amil a sequel! ;)b I hope to do a fanfiction about the Sonic team finding a genderbent world! So we'll see~ Amil is precious though XD I love him!)

Lost Time - Part 2
Shadow smashed the door to the G.U.N. offices open with such a fury that a chill spread through the entire floor. He passed by the many cubicles lining the middle of the floor, ignoring the array of frightened and annoyed gazes. Being on the job for so long, and never failing at a mission had given him a corner office in the back, which he appreciated for its seclusion and privacy. So, on a day like today, he could simply lock himself inside with the blinds shut, and no one dared to bother him.
Just as he had finished shutting the last of his shades, he heard the click of his supposedly locked door as it opened. If possible, his mood darkened even more, for he knew only one person could pick his lock as though he'd left the key in the knob.
"Hey, hon! How's my favorite hedgie doing this morning?" Rouge the Bat announced as she sauntered into his office as though she owned it.
Shadow brought his hands to his forehead and made his way to his desk which sat in the far side and next to the large windows which looked out over the city. Once seated in his chair, he finally brought his attention back to bat who was wandering about his office and touching all of his books and decorations.
"What is it that you want, bat?" He asked, frustration dripping in his voice. He didn't want to deal with the other crazy female in his life, not after the shit he had gone through this morning.
Rouge sighed and dropped the generic bust of a head that had come with the office, back onto it's shelf. She made her way to the other side of his desk and plopped down into a chair. She sucked the right side of her lip, and looked at him with an almost nervous gaze. However, Rouge was rarely nervous, hesitant maybe, but her personality never let her dwell long on anything.
"Well..." She started, and sat back in her chair folding her arms, "I'm throwing a party tomorrow tonight... in celebration of an old friend returning home, and I thought you might want to come."
Shadow scoffed. It was almost hilarious, this situation. He'd never seen Rouge beat around the bush before, but he supposed that was to be expected when it came to the bombshell that was Amy Rose. He grunted and folded his arms as he looked her over,
"And what made you think that I would have even the slightest interest in going to one of your ridiculous parties. Besides it's most likely for someone I don't even know."
He almost laughed out loud at the guilt that appeared on her face. He had never known his oldest partner to feel guilty about anything, and she was the one who had stolen the Master Emerald before and almost caused the collapse of the human world with Dr. Eggman. This was certainly interesting. Amy sure had a way of bringing out sides of people that were never before seen. And not their good sides either.
Shadow rose from his chair and made his way around the desk. "Look, I was going to let you fumble around some more, since it's quite amusing to see you behave like this, but I have work to do. As I'm sure you do as well. Besides," He paused, as he leaned in close to her twitching face, "I know she's back in town. I saw her this morning."
Rouge could not hide the shock that ran through her body and laid to rest on her face. Shadow smirked and walked to the door of his office.
"Wha... What happened?" She asked as he opened the door and gestured for her to leave. He rolled his eyes, and crossed his arms.
"What do you think? She invited me to her inane party. Of course I'm not going. Nothing will make me go, not you and definitely not her."
Rouge sat for a minute, a look of pity on her face, before she got up to leave. He almost felt bad for the way he treated her, after all it wasn't her fault that Amy was a total witch. But as she was leaving, she paused, gave him a look, and said, "People deserve a second chance. Amy may not be perfect, but who is? Just come and hear her out... You'll regret it if you don't."
Without waiting for a response, she left.
................................................................................................................................
As usual, nothing of any importance or excitement happened to Shadow at work. And throughout the day he had done his best to avoid Rouge, which had been difficult since she was his partner, and was a stubborn bitch if he ever knew one. However, he’d been able to leave early after finishing all his paperwork, with the excuse of his broken bike. He headed to his favorite auto shop, all the while riding with extreme care so as not to lose more of his bike then he already had. Once he arrived he was greeted by one of the few Mobians he could tolerate, Jamie Steele, an orange hedgehog mechanic.
"Heya Shado–OH shit! What happened to Ruby?!" Jamie rushed over to the shambles of a bike that Shadow dragged behind him. Shadow rolled his eyes at the hedgehog's frantic examination of his prized possession. "Didn't I tell you not to call it that?"
Jamie stopped and stood up, his blue eyes playful, "You and I both know you like the name." Ignoring Shadow's glare, the orange hedgehog grabbed the bike, and pulled it into his private section of the garage.
As they walked towards the back room, Shadow glanced around at all the high end vehicles and imported machines. He was still amazed at what Jamie had managed to do in just the few years that he’d owned the shop. It used to be the worst in town, but now there was a waiting list for months, just to have Jamie take a glance at a machine. However, having a rare handmade motorcycle, made Shadow’s ‘Ruby’ Jamie’s favorite client. He never had to wait for an appointment.
"So, my friend, you gonna tell me what happened to my favorite girl?" The orange hedgehog’s voice came through the door, snapping Shadow’s attention from the main garage. Shadow made his way in after Jamie, and couldn't help but let loose a frustrated growl.
"Some shit from the past resurfaced in the most inconvenient way possible."
"Oh?" Jamie inquired, as he locked the wheels of the bike into place on a stand and took a closer look at the machine. "And this 'past,' she have a name?"
Shadow looked at him with such a bewildered expression, that it caused the orange hedgehog to laugh. Shadow’s eyes narrowed when he heard the laughter, and he scoffed,
"How'd you know I was talking about a person, let alone a female?"
Jamie shook his head and stood up with a grin, "Not much can make a prideful male like yourself unnerved. I figure it has to be one of two things, a girl or a visit from Chaos himself. And I highly doubt the later is making trips to see a grumpy guy like yourself."
He made his way to the back of the garage, enjoying the sour look of confirmation on Shadow's face and turned off the lights. "Come on, let's go get some drinks. I don't have any more appointments today, and your bike will need new, imported parts, that won't get here for at least a couple days. Besides, you look like you need some hard liquor."

*****
“Oh Cheese…what should we do?”
Cream sat against the rusted bars of the portable birdcage dangling from Dr. Robotnik’s Egg Mobile, flying high over the green hills below.
“Chao chao…” Cheese gave the distraught rabbit a hug, wrapping its small body around her belly.
“Thank you, Cheese.” She turned her head to the side, watching the land below as she allowed her arms to fall to her sides. “I guess there isn’t anything we can do right now.” Pulling herself up by the bars, she planted her feet on the metallic surface and furrowed her brow, a new sense of determination washing over her.
“Sonic will save us…I know he will.” She looked over at the chao, who since found a spot on her shoulder to rest upon. “We just need to have faith. I’m sure momma’s already called Sonic and is waiting for us at Eggman’s hideout.”
“Quit your yappin’ down there! I’m trying to enjoy the view!” Eggman’s angry voice startled the young chao, but the bunny remained as determined as ever.
“You’re not gonna get away with this, Eggman! Sonic will stop you for sure.”
“Oh really?” Eggman gave a bellowing laugh. “We shall see about that!” The evil doctor flipped a switch in his Egg Mobile and cleared his throat as a holographic video image appeared before him. A small, blackish-blue robot was lying on a table, reading a comic book as his hand plundered an open box of Mobian Scout™ mint chocolate chip cookies, bopping his head to the music through his earbuds.
“What is this? Bokkun! Are you slacking off on the job?” The robot didn’t respond, instead taking a sip of soda through a straw as his beady, lime green eyes remained glued to the book. Turning the page with his gloved hands, the small robot laughed in a high-pitched voice before burping rudely and filling his cheeks with several cookies.
Eggman’s face grew red with anger.
“ARE YOU DEAF, BOKKUN!?”
The robot blinked a few times as he looked forward, crumbs covering his face.
“Ahh, Doctor Eggman!” Bokkun said in a muffled voice, spewing cookie bits out of his mouth as he stood up, kicking over his soda while giving his creator a salute. The large yellow M on his torso gleamed in the artificial light of his monitor, his large, pointy ears stiff, and his red boots clasped together.
“Now that’s more like it.” The vein on Robotnik’s forehead receded. “Prepare the camcorder. We have a special message to deliver Sonic and his miserable friends.”
“Aye aye Doctor!” As Eggman’s image disappeared from the monitor, Bokkun sat back down on the table, eyeing the dark, sticky beverage dripping to the floor below. His attention then turned to the half-eaten box of cookies. He grabbed a few more, shoving them into his mouth before leaping off the table, allowing his body to hover with the jetpack attached to his back. He gleefully gave a muffled laugh as he flew down the hallway, entering a storage room full of small, yellow CRT televisions.
“Hmmm…” He raised a finger to his chin as he scanned the room. “Which one should I use today?” Taking a few more seconds to ponder, he decided on the identical television nearest him. Carrying it with his small arms, he nearly fell backward as he began to walk out into the hallway. Wobbling to the side as he strode onward, Bokkun made it to a small recording studio, complete with overhanging lights and sound dampeners covering the walls. Setting the television down, he floated up to the video camera already stationed on a tall tripod.
“Let’s see…” He stuck his teal-colored tongue out the side of his mouth as he configured the settings, rotating the focus ring mounted to the lens. Spinning the small preview monitor around, Bokkun floated into view of the camera. After sticking out his tongue, flexing his arms, and performing mid-air somersaults in front of the camcorder, he got out of the shot, chuckling to himself as he turned off the device to preserve battery.
As Bokkun turned to the door, Eggman stepped inside with Decoe and Bocoe following behind, pushing the caged bunny and chao on a dolly. The small robot winced at the sight of the captured rabbit, his mechanical heart beginning to pound as a drop of perspiration formed over his brow.
Cream…
“Hey Bokkun?” Decoe asked, waving his metallic hand in front of the small robot’s face. “You need a reboot or something?”
“Hello?” Bocoe added, tapping Bokkun’s spherical head, nudging him back into reality.
“W…what?” He looked up at the two taller robots and the evil doctor standing above him.
“Go man the camera before I disassemble you for parts!” Eggman barked, pointing toward the camcorder he had set up moments ago.
“R…right.” Bokkun flew up to the video camera, adjusting the focus as he stared through the lens with a beady eye. He sighed to himself as he positioned the camera so Robotnik was front and center, Cream’s portable prison in the corner.
“All right Bokkun, let’s get this show on the road.” Eggman cleared his throat, adjusting his red jacket as the small robot pressed the record button, shuddering at the sight of the distressed, imprisoned bunny. The small robot could hardly pay attention to the evil doctor’s words or turn the camera to match his movements; his eyes focused on Cream shaking in her cell, a sense of sadness filling his heart.
As Eggman continued giving his speech, Bokkun turned his face away from the eyepiece, instead pulling a heart-shaped locket out from inside his glove. With sad eyes, he looked at the happy picture of Cream within before sighing once more, slipping the locket back into his glove as he returned his attention to the recording at hand.
*****
The sensation of something against his black nose woke Sonic from his peaceful slumber. Slowly opening his eyes, he watched as a butterfly rested against it, fluttering its wings as if to give him a show. Smiling to himself, the blue hedgehog raised a gloved hand toward his nose, allowing the butterfly to hop onto the tip of his index finger, staying in place as Sonic pulled his hand toward the side.
As the insect flew away, Sonic drew in a deep breath, allowing the moisture-filled air to fill his lungs as he sighed heavily, looking off into the distance to witness the sun glistening over the ocean surrounding Angel Island.
“What a morning.” Sonic placed his hands behind his head, looking up into the cloudless sky before noticing a slight pain emanating from his face. He winced as he inspected the bruise with a gloved finger.
What do I tell Amy when she sees my face?
Sonic looked up at the blue sky, taking in the pristine view as he wondered how to fib to the pink hedgehog.
Surely I can’t tell her the truth. That’d be too embarrassing for Tails.
After a few minutes of aimlessly studying the horizon, an idea popped into Sonic’s head.
I know! I’ll just tell her I tripped in the storm last night. Yeah…I…hit my face while climbing the stairs. She’ll definitely believe that!
The blue hedgehog chuckled to himself as his gaze turned downward. He observed as his younger brother slept against his chest, breathing softly, his namesakes wrapped snuggly around his torso.
“Heh…okay little buddy…a few more minutes.” Sonic closed his eyes, his hands supporting his head against the Master Emerald as he went back to sleep.
*****
Tails found himself in a white void, nothing distinguishable within his field of vision.
“This is odd.”
The orange fox peered around as he walked forward, his shoes clicking against the invisible floor as he seemingly made no progress in reaching his unknown destination. Before the young kitsune could further question this eerily familiar location, though, he heard a beeping sound coming from his utility belt. Fishing within its deep pockets, Tails felt what was making the noise.
“No…it can’t be.”
He peered down at the circular object, cracks all across its glass casing. Despite the damage, a dot was blinking on its screen.
“Hmmm…the radar is detecting an emerald a few hundred yards away.” The fox kept his eyes glued to his tracker as he marched onward, no thoughts on his mind other than reaching the location indicated by the device.
As if out of nowhere, the young fox walked face first into a stone wall. He rubbed his head only to find no pain. Taking his hand off his undamaged face, he looked up.
“Ah, must be the backside of the Master Emerald shrine.” Proving his hypothesis correct, the orange kitsune walked along its perimeter to reveal the same stone steps he had used numerous times in recent memory. Taking a deep breath, he climbed the stairs until he reached the top.
“Huh? What is this?”
The Master Emerald was sitting in its normal place, but leaning against the mystical gem was Sonic the Hedgehog, sleeping against the side with his hands resting behind his head, a smile on his face.
“And that’s…me?” Tails studied what appeared to be himself sleeping against Sonic’s chest, his namesakes blanketing him as he rested peacefully in the care of his older brother.
“Tails…Tails…”
“Who’s there?” Tails looked around as he tried finding the source of the high-pitched, feminine voice calling out his name. Taking a few steps forward, he heard a crunching sound beneath his feet. Moving his foot away, he gazed in horror at the broken detector he had smashed the night before, components and bits of glass strewn all around. Pulling out the detector from his utility belt once more, he visually compared the broken mess on the stone floor with the tracker in his hand, the blinking dot hovering in the center of the screen.
“Tails…listen to me…”
“Show yourself!” Tails yelled, putting the working contraption back in his pocket as he looked around frantically, hoping to find the source of the voice.
“The servers are the seven Chaos. Chaos is power…power enriched by the heart.”
“W…what does it all mean? Who are you?” Tails circled the Master Emerald, finding nobody hiding.
“The controller is the one that unifies the Chaos.”
Tails flew upward, planting his feet on top of the mystical gem before spinning his body around, scanning the void surrounding the shrine.
“Nothing…” The fox placed a gloved finger to his chin as he heard the voice once more.
“Open your heart, and your path will be made clear. Believe in Chaos…and yourself…”
“Believe in Chaos…and…myself?”
Tails pondered these words as he sat down on the Master Emerald, his namesakes fluttering as he stared up into the white nothingness above, propping himself up with his hands.
“Heh…if that’s all, I’m ready to wake up now.” He laid down with a smile on his face, his back cool against the top of the mystical gem, placing his hands behind his head for support.
“Wait until Sonic hears about this one.” As he thought about his older brother, recent memories flooded his mind, a tear escaping his eye as he wore a warm smile. Drying his face with a gloved finger, he stood up once more, cupping his hands around his mouth.
“Listen up…ummm…lady! Me and Sonic will crack your riddles and fix the detector! Just you wait!” Yelling into the empty void, he caught himself nearly slipping off the shiny surface of the gem before regaining his composure and continuing his speech. “I’ll believe in myself and Chaos and anything else too for that matter! With Sonic by my side, anything is possible!” He put his arms back to his side, his voice no longer echoing through the abyss.
“Anything…is possible.”
As he was about to fly off the Master Emerald, the ground beneath him began to shake. Balancing on one foot, Tails used his namesakes as additional support as the emerald emitted flashing green lights, static appearing all around the kitsune as dark clouds formed over the white emptiness above.
“Ahh!” Tails slipped backward, landing on his behind as he slowly slid off the front end of the Master Emerald.
“At this rate, I’ll fall on top of Sonic!” The orange fox tried using his hands to prevent himself from slipping further, but it was a futile endeavor; his fingers could not gain traction with the gem’s smooth surface.
“If this is a dream, then Sonic should be fine…but still!” Tails dangled off the side of the mystical gem by one hand, looking down to see the blue hedgehog and himself still sleeping peacefully below, except the base of the Master Emerald was much further away than he remembered. He shook his head as the ground stretched downward until he could barely make out a blue and orange dot below.
Looking back at the edge of the gem’s surface, he gritted his teeth as he attempted to pull himself up, a few more fingers losing their grip as he struggled to keep himself from falling.
“I know! I’ll use my tails!” Spinning his namesakes, he attempted to flee the shaking Master Emerald, but to no avail; a force beyond his control or understanding prevented him from taking flight.
“Figures…I hate dreams.” Tails closed his eyes as his pinkie finger slipped from the Master Emerald. Taking in a deep breath, he accepted his fate, allowing his body to fall back first with arms outstretched.
“Believe in Chaos.”
“And believe in yourself.”
These were the final words the young kitsune heard as the Master Emerald drew further away, his body falling into the endless white chasm below.
*****
Opening his eyes once more, Sonic was nudged awake by the rustling of his younger brother against his chest. The blue hedgehog looked down, feeling the kitsune’s heartrate rise against him as his breathing became labored.
“Hey little guy, it’ll be all right.” Sonic combed his hands through the namesakes still wrapped around Tails’ torso. The orange fox’s breathing and heartbeat returned to normal as he slowly opened his eyes.
“Wakey wakey, sleepy head.” Sonic patted Tails’ legs as the young kitsune rubbed his eyes, his sight still adjusting to the sunlight.
“W…what time is it?” His voice was groggy as he slapped his hands against his furry face in an attempt to wake himself up.
“I dunno.” Sonic raised his wristwatch communicator so both of them could see the large 11:00 AM figure blinking in and out of existence through the glass casing. “Heh, I guess we needed the sleep, huh buddy?”
“I suppose.” Tails was the first to pull himself up, unfurling his namesakes from his chest and he planted his feet against the stone surface of the Master Emerald shrine. The kitsune turned around to see his older brother stretching his arms upward, still sitting against the mystical gem behind them. Sonic paused as an outstretched hand hovered in front of him, smiling as he grabbed hold of Tails’ palm, allowing his younger brother to pull him up.
“I could go for a chiro appointment, though.” Sonic stretched his back, cracking sounds emanating from the blue hedgehog’s bones before placing his hands against his hips, looking into the clear blue sky.
Tails smiled up at the tranquil blue hedgehog, not a worry in the world. Noticing something out of place, though, he squinted his eyes, studying Sonic’s muzzle.
“Hey Sonic, your face!” The orange fox pointed up at Sonic’s cheek as the blue hedgehog looked down, raising a hand to touch his muzzle.
“What about it?” Sonic felt around until he reached his bruise, except the dull pain he expected to feel was nowhere to be found. “What the…” Sonic dashed down the stone stairs of the Master Emerald shrine and bent over to look into a reflection of himself in a puddle along the dirt pathway leading to Knuckles’ cabin.
“Well I’ll be darned…” Pressing his fingers against his chin, Sonic moved his face around, eyeing his reflection intently as he tried to find any sign that the welt had ever existed.
“Hey Tails!” Sonic yelled from the base of the shrine, cupping his hands around his mouth. “My bruise is gone! Strange, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, strange…” The fox rubbed his chin as he looked across the valley in thought.
But how? The bruise should have remained on his face for at least a week, if not longer. I know Sonic recovers from injuries relatively quickly, but nothing quite like this. Unless…
Tails turned himself around, staring at the Master Emerald glimmering in the sunlight.
“Is this…the power of Chaos?”
“Power of what now?” Sonic asked, zooming back up the stairs and standing next to his younger brother, as if materializing out of thin air.
“…I think the Master Emerald healed you.”
“Huh?” Sonic looked at the orange fox with a dumbstruck expression. “Can it even do that?”
“Well,” Tails began, rubbing the back of his head with his hand, “I had another dream last night…about the Master Emerald.”
“And you think this dream helped fix my face?” Sonic ran a hand through his blue quills.
“I don’t know.” Tails stepped toward the Master Emerald, placing his palm against the mystical gem. “I hate to admit it, but it almost feels like magic.”
“Magic? You of all people believin’ in magic?” The two shared a laughed, Sonic rubbing the base of his black nose as the orange kitsune smiled up at his older brother.
“Mobians throughout history have attributed unexplainable phenomena to some sort of mystical, godlike, magical power. I’m sure there’s a logical explanation, though…if I’m ever gonna get my detector working, I’ll have to find out what it is.” Sonic stepped over to the orange fox, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“I’m sure you will, little bro…but remember what we talked about last night.” The blue hedgehog gently pointed his index finger in the young kitsune’s direction.
“Yeah, I know…don’t be too hard on myself n’ all.” Tails replied while nodding, giving the blue hedgehog an additional level of reassurance.
“Right on!” Sonic gave him a thumbs up, which he returned in kind. “Now let’s say we get some grub, huh?”
“Now that you mention it,” Tails looked downward, rubbing his belly as his stomach gurgled, “I am getting kinda hungry.”
“I’m sure Knuckles has a cure for that…let’s just hope it isn’t made of pumpkin this time!” They chuckled once more as the blue hedgehog began his descent down the shrine. Tails was about to take his first step as well, but he froze, turning back to face the Master Emerald once more.
“Thank you…for healing Sonic.” Tails returned to the mystical gem, rubbing it with a gloved hand, a feeling of warmth radiating through his palm.
“Hey, you comin’ or what?” Sonic yelled from the base of the shrine.
“Coming, Sonic!” Revving up his namesakes, Tails flew down the stairway, joining Sonic as they made their way back to Knuckles’ cabin, enjoying the sun against their fur and the light wind carrying the scent of the trees and the ocean to their nostrils.
As they entered the red echidna’s abode, they found everyone else was up as well.
“Hey Knuckles! What’s cracki—” Sonic’s question was cut off as he watched Amy yelling into Knuckles’ face.
“What do you mean you don’t have any breakfast?!” Amy’s face grew red as she glared menacingly at the red echidna.
“Well I don’t exactly keep a whole lot of food around the house, you know.” Knuckles kept his cool, choosing to keep his eyes closed, his forehead facing the floor. “And besides, even if I had food, my kitchen is a total mess! It’ll almost be noon by the time I clean it all up.”
“…Okay, fair enough.” Amy turned around, frustration still emanating from her.
“Amy’s got a point, though,” Rouge said, sitting at the kitchen table, keeping her head held up with her arms. “We can’t plan our next move on an empty stomach.”
“You’re gonna help us after all?” Amy asked, confusion written on her face as she turned to face the bat.
“Yeah…why not?” She shrugged he shoulders. “I don’t want Eggman to collect all the emeralds just as much as you guys, and anything to get me closer to Knucky here is a win-win for me.” The jewel thief gave the red echidna a long wink, her eyelashes fluttering as Knuckles’ face turned red.
“Yeah, think whatever you’d like,” the red echidna replied. “As long as we have your help, that’s all I care about.”
“Suit yourself, Knucky.” Rouge smiled at the red echidna as Sonic laughed from the entryway. Tails covered his mouth as he snickered alongside his older brother.
“So what are we gonna do about food then?” Amy asked.
“I think I know!” The party turned to Tails, who raised a finger upward, closing his eyes as he wore a bright smile. “I happen to keep a supply of provisions in the Tornado 2, as well as basic cooking equipment just for such emergencies.” The fox turned to Knuckles. “Why don’t you start a campfire so we don’t dirty up your kitchen even more.” He then turned to his older brother. “Hey Sonic, wanna race me back to the plane?”
“Would I?” Sonic’s lips broadened into a smile at the prospect. “You know me too well.”
“Heh, I know.” Tails itched the base of his nose in satisfaction, unintentionally imitating the blue hedgehog. Sonic smiled back at the orange fox, feeling truly hopeful about his younger brother for the first time in what felt like ages.
Glad to see you back, Tails.
“Last one there’s a rotten Eggman!” Tails bolted out the entrance, leaving Sonic behind.
“Hey, no fair!” The blue hedgehog shook himself from his stupor before running after his younger brother, leaving the cabin door wide open as the two made their way back to the biplane.
“Those two are something else,” Rouge observed.
“Yeah, I’ll say,” Knuckles replied, snorting as he left the cabin, walking along its perimeter until he came to the wooden awning on the opposite side, fetching a pile of logs kept dry from the evening rain.
*****
As Knuckles prepared the bonfire, Sonic and Tails were racing neck and neck, rapidly approaching the Tornado 2’s resting spot. Skidding to a stop, the blue hedgehog rolled himself into a ball, charging a spindash that would help him overtake the young fox.
Sonic launched himself forward, but instead of seeing the orange kitsune running in the distance, he watched as Tails remained still directly in the middle of the narrow path, his namesakes fluttering as he tightened his fists.
The blue hedgehog was rolling too fast to stop his momentum or dodge around the young fox. As he thought he was about to careen into him, Tails stepped to the side, charging his namesakes before whipping them toward the blue hedgehog, launching him back the other way like a tennis ball.
That clever lil’ kid.
“Sayonara, Sonic!” The orange kitsune snickered as he sped onward, widening the gap between them.
Sonic gradually flew back down the path, a slight curve in his projection causing him to careen higher. Holding out his arms at just the right time, the blue hedgehog grabbed onto a thick tree branch, his body twirling around several times before letting go, allowing himself to launch forward once more, rolling rapidly toward the unsuspecting fox.
“Huh?” Tails looked backward as his namesakes carried him closer to the Tornado 2, watching as a spherical blue form approached him. “Impossible! How could he have recovered that quickly?” Turning forward once more, the young kitsune increased the speed of his rotary tails, matching Sonic’s velocity as the blue hedgehog unfurled himself from spherical form and ran alongside his little brother.
“That was a clever move you had there, little guy.” Sonic smiled at Tails, giving him a thumbs up.
“Heh, not as much as your speedy recovery. How’d you do it?” Tails was huffing under his breath while the blue hedgehog showed no sign of exhaustion.
“Let’s just say you didn’t account for tree branches and my hands.” Sonic waved his palms forward, bits of bark still stuck to his gloves. The two chuckled under their breath as they picked up their speed.
“Almost…there…” Sweat formed along Tails’ brow as he reached his hands forward. “Whoever…touches the…plane first wins…”
“Right.” Sonic’s face turned serious, running with his arms behind his back as the two nearly closed the gap between themselves and the aircraft. “Time to finish this.”
As Tails blinked, he noticed a blue streak speed by, Sonic disappearing before his eyes.
“What the heck?” Tails jumped through a set of bushes, entering the clearing containing the grassy landing strip. The fox looked on as Sonic waved at him, lying on one of the plane’s wings, keeping his head upright with his other arm. Finally reaching the plane himself, Tails placed the palms of his hands against the metallic side of the Tornado 2. The orange kitsune breathed heavily, sweat rolling down his brow as he allowed himself a much-needed break.
“Ya did good, Tails.” Sonic jumped off the wing and patted his younger brother on the shoulder. “To be honest, I was worried there for a sec.”
“Heh…thanks...” Tails cracked a smile between labored breaths as he looked up at the blue hedgehog.
“You’re one of the only ones who can even come close to my speed. Just think how lazy I’d get without you ‘round!” Chuckling once more, Tails wiped the sweat from his forehead before fishing around his utility belt. After allowing his hand to search every pocket contained therein, the fox’s eyes turned wide, his jaw dropping in shock as his pupils shrank.
“What’s the matter, lil’ bro?”
“…I forgot the keys.”
*****
The sun was high in the sky, morning giving way to afternoon as the dynamic duo returned to the cabin for the second time. Sonic and Tails carried sealed bags of flavored oatmeal, a pot, small bowls, a set of spoons, and a ladle. Boiling tap water over the bonfire near to the edge of the floating island, Tails dumped a large packet of instant oats into the water, allowing the contents to cook and absorb. After stirring the pot, scooping a ladle-full of the oatmeal and lifting it to eye-level for a more thorough inspection, the young kitsune poured the breakfast into each of the small bowls before filling the pot with another container of water, placing it over the firepit once more, as he anticipated the group would be hungry for seconds.
“Wow Tails, this is really good!” Amy exclaimed, her face filling with color as a new sense of vigor pulsed through her.
“Yeah, way to go!” Knuckles added, giving the orange fox a hefty fist bump. Tails retracted his arm, blowing against his knuckles as he chuckled nervously.
“Now this is a meal fit for a hedgehog!” Sonic took several large, rapid bites before freezing, his face contorting as he pulled the silverware from his mouth.
“Water, water!” Sonic yelped as Tails handed him a bottle of H2O. The blue hedgehog gulped it down rapidly before sticking his tongue out and licking the palm of his gloved hand.
“Eww, gross Sonic!” Amy gave her boyfriend a pointed look, Sonic stopping mid-lick to match her glare.
“Whaa? ‘eye ‘oug ‘urs.” Sonic turned his face around, blowing air out of his mouth with the hopes of cooling down his burnt tongue.
“What he was trying to say,” Tails said, raising a finger in the air, “was ‘What? My tongue hurts!’” The friends laughed merrily as Sonic ran around the perimeter of the bonfire several times before finally setting himself back down on a makeshift log chair, picking up his warm bowl to continue eating.
“Well, if there’re no objections,” Knuckles began, looking out across the fire, “I think we can finally start planning our next course of action.”
“Before we do that,” Tails stood up, scratching the back of his head, “I…had another vision last night.”
“Another vision?” Knuckles raised a gloved finger to his chin.
“At least I think it was.” The young fox told the party about his dream, describing every last detail of his experience and the mysterious lady’s cryptic message.
“I wonder what it all means?” Sonic asked himself, looking toward his equally puzzled little brother.
“I think I know…” Knuckles stood up and walked toward the edge of the cliff, taking in the sight and sound of the ocean waves below.
“You do?” Tails walked toward the red echidna, observing him as he carefully studied the oceanscape stretching as far as the eye could see.
“I think you’re approaching the Master Emerald all wrong.” Knuckles turned to the orange fox. “You’re trying to study it scientifically. To unlock its secrets, you have to go beyond logic and reason.” He grabbed the kitsune’s hands, who gasped in surprise. “Trust the Master Emerald. Place your faith in the Master Emerald. Treat it like a friend instead of an experiment.”
Tails sighed to himself, allowing his hands to return to his sides as Knuckles let go of his wrists. Turning toward the ocean view, the fox sat down, holding his head up with his hands as he lost himself in thought.
How do I even begin to understand something so…illogical?
The orange kitsune knew in his heart Knuckles was right, even if he couldn’t provide a suitable explanation.
Knuckles placed a gloved paw against Tails’ shoulder.
“It may seem difficult, but as long as you open your heart, the Master Emerald will guide the way.”
Tails turned his head to face Knuckles once more before his gaze wondered down to the red echidna’s worn red and yellow shoes. Finally, the young kitsune furrowed his brow, looking back up at Knuckles with determination in his eyes.
“I don’t pretend to understand it all, but there’s one thing I do know.” Tails stood up, walking back to the bonfire, his friends staring back at him. “I’ll keep on trying! I’ll ‘open my heart’ a hundred times if I have to!”
Sitting back down on his log seat, the fox was greeted by Sonic’s hand patting him on the shoulder. Tails returned the gesture with a determined smile before picking up his bowl, eating as he enjoyed the company of his friends.
I’m so lucky to have them. I’d be lost without my pals…especially Sonic.
He looked up at the blue hedgehog, whose pinkie finger was wedged between his molars.
“Here, Sonic.” Tails withdrew a toothpick from his utility belt and placed it in the palm of Sonic’s free hand.
“Ah, you’re a life saver!” The blue hedgehog replaced his pinkie with the pick, dislodging an oat from between his back teeth.
Tails smiled back at him as he grabbed his spoon. Before he could take another bite, however, he heard a familiar ringing sound coming from the opposite side of the bonfire.
“Oh, hold on a sec,” Amy said, raising her wristwatch communicator to her face.
Ah, that was one of the ringtones I programmed into her phone.
The fox blew into his spoonful of oatmeal as Amy pressed a button on her watch, Vanilla’s name blinking in bold letters across its screen.
“Hey Vanilla! How is it going?”
“Amy…please…help me…he…Eggman…took Cream…please help…”
“I don’t understand.” A look of worry struck the pink hedgehog’s face as the rest of the party listened in to the call from around the campfire. “Are you saying Eggman kidnapped Cream?” The elder bunny didn’t immediately respond, too overcome with tears and grief to remain coherent. Finally, after blowing her nose into a handkerchief, she spoke once more.
“Y…yes. Cream was so tough…so fearless for someone her age. She destroyed many of Eggman’s robots before her capture. I tried to stop him, but…” A new wave of sobs interrupted Vanilla’s explanation.
“There, there, it’ll be okay.” Amy tried to soothe the motherly bunny as much as anyone could from such a long distance.
“…he even tricked me into throwing him a Chaos Emerald. I’m such a fool…”
“A Chaos Emerald?” Knuckles asked, speaking over Vanilla’s crying. “Know where he went?”
“I already know where Eggman went.” The party looked over at the jewel thief, who sat quietly on the opposite side of the bonfire, studying the fingers on her outstretched hand. “He took the Chaos Emerald back to his fortress. Where else?”
“So that means Eggman has at least three emeralds now.” Knuckles folded his arms, looking down at the smoldering fire.
“And more importantly,” Amy added, giving the red echidna a stern glare, “Eggman took Cream! We need to do something.”
“Ames is right.” Sonic stood up, clenching his fists as he turned to face Rouge. “Can you lead us to Eggman’s lair?”
“Why certainly.” She gave the blue hedgehog a smile as she crossed her legs. “As long as I can come with.”
“The more the merrier!” Sonic replied as he turned to Tails. “How ‘bout we go save Cream with the Tornado 2?”
“You bet!” Tails tried to hide his excitement. He knew that he’d be engaging in an important mission to save his friend, but he simply couldn’t lie to himself; he really wanted to save the day with his older bro.
He needed this.
“Well? What’re we waitin’ for?” Sonic turned to face the path leading back to the biplane. “Let’s go!”
“Right!” Just as the brotherly duo were about to dash off, however, the gang heard something up above, the sound of high-pitched laughter getting closer.
“What’s that?” Amy asked, squinting up at a small, dark figure slowly making its way toward the camp.
“It’s Bokkun!” Sonic looked up at the tiny robot, his beady, lime green eyes and M-shaped yellow belt buckle glistening in the afternoon sun as he descended to the camp, a cubical television in his arms. After he landed, Bokkun placed the television on the ground and stood next to it.
“All right everyone! Watch clo—” The messenger robot stopped as he took a whiff of the air. “Is that…is that oatmeal?”
“Ummm…yes it is?” Tails replied, a confused look on his face. “Why?”
“It’s just that…” Moisture began to fill Bokkun’s small eyes. “…Eggman doesn’t feed me very well, and his cooking is disgusting. I’d die for some good, sweet, delectable oatmeal.” The tiny robot approached Tails’ bowl of half-eaten breakfast, picking it up as he grabbed the metal spoon from within.
“Ummm, sure…help yourself.” Tails and the gang watched as the sad robotic henchman put the utensil in his mouth. He stopped mid-bite, the flavor almost causing him to glitch out as he opened his beady eyes as wide as they would go.
“This…this…” A smile appeared on his face, tears gushing from his eyes. “This is the greatest thing I’ve ever had in my life!” He began eating faster, matching Sonic’s speed as he wolfed down much of Tails’ leftovers.
“Oh no you don’t!” Amy grabbed the bowl away from Bokkun, the small robot reaching his arms out in a feeble attempt to snag it back. “First you’re gonna tell us what an Eggman robot like yourself is doing here, then maybe we’ll let you have some more.”
Bokkun wiped the tears from his eyes with the back of his hand.
“…Promise?”
Amy sighed heavily as she looked down at the pathetic robot peering up at her with shimmering eyes, his hands clasped together as if begging for more nourishment.
“…Promise.”
“All right!” Experiencing a sudden mood shift, Bokkun flung himself backward with his jetpack, landing in front of the yellow CRTV as he prepared to give his pre-rehearsed introduction. “Listen up, folks! I’ve got a special message from Eggman you won’t wanna miss!” Stepping to the side of the television, Bokkun pressed a button near the corner of its curved screen.
The party watched in horror as an image of Cream and Cheese flickered across the monitor, the two clasping the rusty bars of their birdcage-like prison. Bokkun turned his face away, a slight blush appearing on his face.
“Sonic…Tails…anyone…please help us.”
“Chao, chao…”
*****
I hope you enjoyed chapter 10! I have a few updates and announcements below:
I slightly altered the ending of chapter 9 to make the amount of time Vanilla spent lamenting in the backyard over Cream’s kidnapping more ambiguous. This was to fill the inadvertent plot hole I almost created where Bokkun arrives to Angel Island shortly after the kidnapping. #CrisisAverted
Also, if you have the time, I’d appreciate it if you checked out the poll I posted on my Fan Fiction account; I’ve been tossing around a follow-up to “A Prelude to Chaos Control” since I began writing this story which would inevitably be a reimagining of the events of Sonic X, except with an emphasis on Tails, taking away money as a superpower, swapping around some human protagonists, and making a bunch of other changes which would divert enough from the anime to make it interesting. If this is something you’d be interested in reading, or if the idea seems lame, feel free to take the poll! I’d like to hear your opinions, as this’ll help guide my projects as I get closer to finishing this one.
Update: Chapter 11 can be found here!

65. Special - Sonic Live!
Tumblr media
Previous / Table of Contents / Next
The Last Game Cartridge Hero
Writer/Pencils: Ken Penders Colors: Karl Bollers
*deep breath* …oh boy.
So this issue is kind of infamous for being, well, terrible. At least, this first story is. Even I, usually being willing to put up with a lot of crap from Penders, think this story is just a royal mess. You'll see what I mean in a second.
Anyway, the customary intro page of this issue makes some kind of allusion to Sonic being about to enter some strange other zone that's unlike anything he's ever experienced before. Indeed, the beginning shows Sonic rushing to try to rescue Sally, who's been captured by Robotnik, only to be blasted by energy bolts from behind - which, as we all know from when this exact thing happened to Robotnik in StH#21, just means he'll be catapulted into another reality instead of killed. Which reality is that, you ask?
Ha. Haaaaaa.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah. That's right, folks. It's one of these. Kenders actually recruited both his real life son and niece to be photographed and placed into the story of the Sonic comics as actual characters. Luckily this only lasts for this one issue, and they weren't made recurring characters or something, but like, damn. These children are grown-ass adults right now. I wonder what they think of this? What they think of their father/uncle respectively? If they cringe looking back at this, or look back on fondly as a cool thing they got to experience as kids? Side note as well, as I've mentioned before Ken had never played a Sonic game while he worked on the comics, nor did he own a Sega console. That's why, when Steve "dies" in the game the screen simply appears to turn off, and, if you look closely, he's not holding a game controller, but rather holding a regular TV remote sideways. Oh, Ken. Why this? Why?
Well, anyway, Sonic finds himself floating in a strange void seemingly unable to move or see anything, until the faces of these kids start looming in his face and talk about seeing him in the TV as they try to turn on their game. Sonic, worried they're going to try to turn off the TV and I guess strand him in there for longer, somehow reaches out and pulls them in instead.
Tumblr media
Great going, Sonic! Now these two kids who have no superpowers of their own are stuck in a dangerous war zone with you. Indeed, this goes as well as you might expect. He and the two kids are able to breach back into Sonic's home zone, where Robotnik has captured the rest of the Freedom Fighters and is planning to launch missiles into space to create… some kind of doomsday device? It's not really explained well beyond "killer satellites," but either way, Sonic doesn't like the idea of this, and so he starts beating up the swatbots in his way. This stops briefly when Robotnik decides to take his villainy to the next level and threaten to shoot the two random innocent kids just because they happen to be with Sonic.
Tumblr media
Of course, the swatbots aren't as fast as Sonic, which begs the question of how they even managed to blast him at the beginning of this story in the first place, and he beats the rest of them up and escapes with the kids. He takes them to the control center to shut down the missile launch, which has begun its countdown due to Sonic accidentally knocking Robotnik down onto his launch remote. Great job, buddy!
Tumblr media
They manage to shut down the missiles, but just as they do, Robotnik, Snively, Sonic, and the two kids are all pulled into a strange beam of light. Once Sonic and the kids get their bearings, Robotnik begins gloating, since apparently, during the split second between when he entered and when Sonic entered, he contacted a bunch of alternate universe copies of himself and got them to build him a big mech suit shaped like himself. Apparently, they're in yet another strange zone, and Robotnik realizes he can conquer the whole multiverse from here, not just his own version of Mobius. At least… I think that's what he's implying. Honestly, it's so unclear and all the dialogue so scattered, it's hard to even properly tell. Anyway, Robotnik throws Sonic and the kids in a prison cell with several other… humans?
Tumblr media
While Robotnik suddenly finds himself threatened by the other versions of himself, not content to be used for slave labor, Sonic has a chat with these people. Apparently, this isn't just any old zone - it's the kids' home zone, AKA, Earth! Now, this definitely isn't our Earth. These guys claim to be the designers of the Sonic games, but for one, they're decidedly not Japanese, and two, there's no mention of Sega at all. Apparently, the concept art for Sonic the Hedgehog in this world was created when they received strange interdimensional transmissions showing images of him, and they decided to make a game out of it. Not only that, but now these video game designers slash scientists have apparently created a weird prototype device that was responsible for sucking Sonic and co. into this world through a strange dimensional link. Yyyyyeah. Go ahead and try to make any sense out of this crap.
Well, anyway, Sonic and the kids notice Robotnik and Snively about to be vaporized by the angry other-Robotniks, and decide to step in and save them from certain death, or maybe just another instance of zone-hopping. Come on Sonic, this is what, the third or fourth time you had an opportunity to let this guy die and have all your problems be solved? How many other people have died in this war because you refuse to let Robotnik be killed by his own hubris? Of course, the swatbots and other Robotniks don’t like this, and so to save themselves, Sonic and the kids need to shut down the prototype linking them to this world. Turns out the way they do this… is through Sonic game cheat codes!
Tumblr media
The code recited by little Steve here is actually a real code, something I'm mildly surprised about given Ken's weird disdain for the Sonic video games. It's the level select code for the original Sonic the Hedgehog game on Genesis (non-Japanese version). If you've got a Genesis and a copy of the first game, try it yourself and see. In this world, however, it's apparently the shutdown code for the swatbots, and thus everyone is saved. The game designer scientist guys use the prototype's dimensional link to send Sonic, Robotnik and Snively back to their own zone, and Sonic has a happy reunion with his friends, who have been mysteriously freed from captivity in the meantime.
Tumblr media
Oh, boy. Someone needs to tell Kenders that the Sonic games don't actually depict Sonic from the comics. These kids aren't gonna have any idea what the Sonic they were traveling with is up to, because all they'll be doing is playing as a different, more turquoise-colored Sonic, battling some weird dude called "Eggman" and collecting seven multicolored Chaos Emeralds to save a planet that definitely isn't called Mobius. Shame.
The Substitute Freedom Fighters
Writer: Rich Koslowski Pencils: Art Mawhinney Colors: Karl Bollers
So you may be wondering. How exactly did the Freedom Fighters even get captured in the first place, and how did they escape while Sonic and the others were stuck in the "real world"? This story is here to answer our questions! Apparently, while Sonic is just off derping around somewhere else, the others are watching Rotor create a new micro-cam that he can attach to his bandolier, working kind of like a body cam so they can review footage of battles after the fact and learn from them. Fortunately for them, some swatbots immediately show up to let them test out their new invention. Unfortunately for them, they get overwhelmed and dragged back to Robotnik.
Tumblr media
Hey, look who it is! Larry Lynx has made his comeback, and he's noticed everyone's disappearance… as well as the ongoing live feed from Rotor's micro-cam. Realizing everyone is in danger, he rallies the first people he sees training - Cyril Eagle, and Sally's old recruits. They team up and fight their way into Robotropolis, Larry using his famous bad luck to make sure the swatbots lose every time, and they're able to eventually find the captured Freedom Fighters and liberate them. After finding Sonic as well, they head back to Knothole, where Sally forms the six of them into a new team, the Substitute Legion of Freedom Fighters, as a backup squad that can continue the fight against Robotnik if the Freedom Fighters are unable to.
Tumblr media
This is cute, but it does bring up an interesting point. Clearly, the Freedom Fighters are not always able to win their battles, and it's dire enough that Sally's started forming backup teams. It's not said directly that it's in case the main team dies or is roboticized or something, but we know that's a very real possibility in this war. Makes you wonder how this war was even fought when they were all tiny kids, and if something like this has ever happened before…
Knuckles Quest 2
Writer: Kent Taylor Pencils/Colors: Pat Spaziante
Well, no need to worry about that. Knuckles is at it again! This time, he's found his way to a strange cottage in the forest, and is set upon by a bunch of vicious mythical creatures, most of which he names off and mentions hearing in fairy tales. It's interesting, because as far as I'm aware, none of these are real-life mythical creatures, which means we're getting a tiny bit of lore and worldbuilding regarding the kinds of mythical creatures Mobian children are told about in this world.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Knuckles is totally confused about why he's fighting all these creatures that are supposed to not even exist, but eventually reasons that they indeed can't be real, and are magical projections. Once he announces this, they dissipate and he finds himself talking to an old fox wizard, who directs him to continue his search elsewhere. He then reveals that he used to serve the king in his youth, and that his name is…
Tumblr media
…Merlin Prower? Any Sonic fan worth their salt knows that Tails' real name is Miles Prower and that "Tails" is just a nickname, indicating that this strange wizard may be somehow related to Tails. Hmm, wonder if we'll ever hear any more of him…?

The Dark Prince: Chapter Four: Believe In Him
Tumblr media
"So you what you are saying is that you came from the future because something happened in our time that causes your future's destruction?"
"Yes! That's exactly what I am saying!"
Amy and Shadow looked at each other and then at the white boy in front of them. Excitement on his to eyes to finally have found someone who took interest in his mission.
"Sorry to inform you boy, but you are a few days too late," Shadow confirmed.
"What do mean?"
"G.U.N's Commander was found dead a few days ago. I was the one who found him."
"No, that's not possible. The Phamton Ruby sent me here on a specific time in which I can stop the tragedy. If he was dead, I would have been sent back to another time to try again...are you sure he is dead?"
"Are you calling me a liar?"
Amy felt Shadow's anger raise up as she found his voice more annoyed than usual. "Well, have you thought that maybe the dead of G.U.N's Commander is not really the cause of your future' destruction?", Amy jumped into the middle of the two boys to prevent anything else from happening.
"Well...it could be a possibility." Silver looked into the flames in front of him. Fire, the thing that reminded him the most about his future. Destruction, annihilation, fear. But this place wasn't like anything that reminded him of that.
"Silver...are you alright?"
"Yes... it's just that, this place is so quiet. It's been a long time."
"What happens in the future? , if I may ask."
"Everything was going well until a weird diseased began to spread. It was spread by touch, and whoever had it would become kinda like a zombie. They would only follow orders from the Superior."
"The Superior?" Shadow asked this time as he calmed down.
"Yes, he controls everyone but nobody knows how he or she looks like. He wears a mask whenever he shows up to do his "Public Speeches." Silver looked up to the stars above him and he wonders when was the last time he had seen a clear sky.
"How come you are the only one here then?"
"The Rebellion* of the future decided I was the best candidate to travel back in time... I am their last hope."
Shadow stood up from his place and walked around Silver's space. Silver knew what he was doing and so Amy. He was inspecting him as if to try and see if he was worthy.
"Really? You were their last hope?"
"You don't know what I am cable of", Silver reply as he stood up, he had gone through a lot of things and he wasn't gonna let anybody doubt him of his capabilities.
"One on one... just you and me on a fair fight."
Amy knew that Shadow wasn't the type to pick up fights just because. That was more like a thing Sonic would do but she knew that you can learn a lot from a person just by fighting with them. Shadow didn't want to know how strong he was, but if he was worthy of his trust.
Silver took a moment to look at Shadow, up and down and he just sighed as he went back to his seat next to Amy. "Sorry I don't fight with old people."
Shadow was ready to smack that kid on the head right then and there. But Amy's sudden comment interrupted his action.
"Oh, well technically Shadow is more 50 years old!"
"Amy!"
"That explains why he is so grumpy."
"I was time frozen! I didn't develop-mentally nor physically! I am still young!"
Amy has never seen Shadow fume so bad as to this moment. And to be honest it was actually kinda funny.
"That explains why you are so short then."
Ouch, that hurt.
Silver had won Amy's respect. She had to admit that he was pretty optimistic for someone whose future was destroyed. It must be horrible to live in a future where you see your friends being zombified and can't do anything about it.
Wait a second.
"Hey Silver...did the ones who have a diseased in your future... did they looked, I don't know... kinda metallic for you?" Amy interrupted the boys. Silver took a moment to look at her. "Yes... how did you know that?"
Click.
"Years ago, during the time of the Resistance, Dr. Eggman created a biological weapon. It was a disease that just by contact with it, the subject would be "zombified" on the moment. Their most stand out characteristic was their metallic fur."
"That's probably it then! I just have to find it the substance and destroy it!" Silver said with relieve in his voice as his course of the route was finally taken the right place.
"It's not as easy as that." Amy began. "We tried everything to destroy it, but nothing worked. We couldn't even find an antidote. So we decided to hide all the substance we found in a remote place. Somewhere no one knows about but...Tails."
"Tails? That fox boy?." Shadow said but he turned around to face a bush. He could swear he had heard something coming.
"Wait a moment. Tails? Fox? You are not talking about Tails Miles Prower right?" Silver looked at Amy then at Shadow who was still looking toward the woods.
"Yes, that one."
"I can't believe it, he is a legend! I would like to meet him very much!" Silver grabbed Amy's hand as to beg her, he looked like a small child which Amy found extremely cute.
"So as to right now, we should look for Tails and ask him where the substance is. I am almost sure that whoever wants to find it, is also somehow invoked with the death of the Commander, Amy."
"Wait, Amy?-" Silver wanted to continue but was terribly interrupted by an explosion on their bonfire.
Just like that, the three hedgehogs were surrounded by more than 15 G.U.N agents, all ready to take them out. Shadow was sure that he could recognize most of them if it wasn't that everyone was wearing something to cover their faces. Shadow was never really found to do that. All though if his supervisors would ask him to, due to safety reasons, he always denies it. But right now it wasn't the time to think about the past. If they decided to become his enemy, then he will fight like he always has.
Silver noticed how Amy made a hammer appeared out of thin air and he almost lost it. The inner fanboy in him took over.
"YOU ARE THAT AMY ROSE? YOU ARE THE LEADER OF LEADERS? GREAT HAMMER HOLDER AND EVIL SLAYER?! YOU ARE THE ONLY WHO WE ACTUALLY HAVE HISTORY RECORDS OF!"
And that when everyone attack.
"Wow the future really does like to blow out everything out of portions" that's what Amy wanted to say but was more worried about the G.U.N who was in front of him.
And then he wasn't.
He had flown out of the scene, landing on a three. Amy turned around to find Silver hold three soldiers on the air.
"WHAT KIND OF POWER IS THAT, ARE YOU CRAZY? PUT THEM DOWN!" Amy screamed at him as she rubbed towards him.
"Yes man!" Silver saluted Amy in a militia manner and as he did, he left all three soldiers land on each other, hurting themselves more than their target.
"We got no time for this!" Shadow grabbed Amy and picked her up. "Follow me!" He said to Silver and in a flash, Shadow was out of sight to him.
"WAIT I AM NOT AS FAST!!!" Silver used his psychokinesis on him to try and fly faster and although he could spot a black figure in the distance, it was still really hard to keep up, especially during night time.
If there was one thing Silver hated the most, was to be left behind.
"AAAHHHHH, FUC-"
.
.
.
Now what? They had ended up in somewhere that Shadow knew about. They had been running all night, for Shadow it wasn't a problem but he was starting to get worried as he hasn't seen any white figure following from behind. He stopped for a little to let Amy stretch her legs as well.
"Where are we heading to now?". Amy asked as she stretched.
"Pavlopetri. G.U.N's elite Mechanics team resides there. No doubt that fox boy is there."
Shadow then felt a presence coming. "Talking about boys." He turned around and there he was, Silver giving his last push to keep up with the black hedgehog.
"Don't ever. Do that. AGAIN." Silver threaten as he landed on his knees, he would kill for a cup of water and some food right now.
"If you can't keep up, then don't tag along. Don't worry we will save your future." Shadow walked away as he kept an eye on Amy who was helping Shadow to get up.
"No! I must do it myself!"
Silver stood by himself, refusing Amy's aid. Shadow had to admit that his boy reminded him of someone. He sighed, "We are 30 minutes away from Pavlopetri. If you still want the hero's job well...it waits for you over there."
Pavlopetri was one of the biggest city in Mobius. With more than 7 million in population, it was no wonder why G.U.N had decided to put one of their biggest team in the city. It was going to hard to get into the tower and the three hedgehogs knew that. Before going into the city they needed to make a plan. However, the best they could at the moment was to sit down on the outskirts of the city.
"I am going in," Shadow said as he stood up from the grass. The strong wind coming their way.
"But Shadow-"
"I am the only who knows how their system works. I am the best spy G.U.N has ever had. I am sure I can a couple of minutes to talk to Tails."
"But I want to meet him!", Silver whined. "Besides we are a team! We have to stick together."
"I run better solo." Shadow turned around and looked at Silver. At this point, Shadow wasn't playing any games.
"Well, I won't stay here and do nothing! I am coming with you whether you like it or not!" Silver stood up and smiled at Shadow, but what he got instead was a dark look.
"If complications happen, I might not be able to take care of you."
"I can take care of myself."
"I had many trained agents tell me those same words...must of them are dead now." Shadow looked at Silver's disappointed face and continued. "Your time to shine would come, don't pressure it."
"Its alright Silver, you can stay with me! Actually, I think I have an idea on how to keep us busy while Shadow is gone!", Amy said as she comforted him.
"So," Silver looked at Shadow one more time, "I have to stay and take care of Amy, uh?"
"No," Shadow gave him an empathetic look. "Amy is gonna stay here and take care of you."
"Wait, what?"
"Don't misunderstand the situation kid. I am not taking Amy with me because she is staying to take care of you."
Silver thought that that was more like it. Even if there was no clear record of what happened 200 years ago, the orphanage and the friends he made there would always talk about the Resistance Heros. Amy Rose, Resistance Captain, one the strongest. Rumors have it that her hammer is so powerful that her enemies would fear for their eyes whenever they encountered her. Of course, there were others like Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails Miles Prower, Knuckles the Edquina and Shadow the Hedgehog who later on would become the-
"Anyways, I should get going. I'll ask for information and leave as soon as I can. If I don't come back in two hours, then leave this place as soon as you can. Look for Rouge or Omega."
This time, Shadow looked at Amy. Wind blowing on through her quills, the lights of the city shining on her head. "Will you wait for me?"
"Always."
Shadow smiled and was about to take in for a run but stopped as soon as he felt Amy grabbed onto his arm. "Thank you, Mr. Angry."
"Don't thank me yet, Mrs. Angry.", Shadow smirked, and gently removed his arm out of her grasp.
"Um... am I interrupting something.?"
.
.
.
It had been ten minutes and Silver and Amy were only appreciating the fact that Shadow had left. "Well, I think we should start looking for some provisions, or something." Silver turned around and began to look at his surroundings.
"No, we are gonna do something better," Amy said.
"What do mean?"
"We are stealing a Chaos Emerald."
.
.
.
"Didn't your friend said to stay on the outskirts of the city?"
"If we get this Chaos Emerald, then it will be easier to travel around and for us to defend ourselves." Amy and Silver were currently on the air conducts of a top security area. Last time Amy checked, all seven Chaos Emeralds were placed in different locations around the world. One of them and the only one she knew its whereabouts was the green emerald that lied securely on the northern outskirts of the city of Pavlopetri. How did she know? During the time period of the war with Eggman when Sonic was presumed dead, Amy decided to embark on a solo adventure to find the Chaos Emeralds to help revive Sonic somehow. She found three and after the war, she gave them to G.U.N. to take care of them. As a thank you, G.U.N. gave her the location of them.
"I can't believe that the Chaos Emeralds are real. I would only hear stories about them when I was a kid." Silver added.
"How come you came back to the future if not by the Chaos Emeralds?" Amy asked as she tried to talk as low as she could.
"We used something my people called the Phantom Ruby... We inserted that into an old time machine, we didn't it was going to work. But it did and here I am."
Amy noticed a bright light coming from the end of the air conduct and headed towards it.
"Anyways, I don't see the point in getting the Chaos Emerald. Legend says that only descendants of the Dark King are able to control the power of Chaos. And of course Sonic the Hedgehog but he is just a children story."
Alright, Amy had to stop Silver on his tracks. " Does the future ever say anything accurate about the past?"
"Don't blame me! Before I was born, there was a period of time in which the Superior declared all history records as illegal and they were all burned into ashes. Teachers aren't even allowed to teach history." Silver whispered in hopes that Amy would be able to hear his voice.
"That sounds horrible...who ruled before the Superior took over?" Amy asked as she looked back to him. She was right in front of the ventilation door but waited for the last guard to leave the room.
"We don't know for sure. But people say that out the first ruler was The Dark King and after that, his descendants took over. Some say that the Superior killed all of his descendants during the Great War. But honestly, the only thing my people have ever know is as 'Leader' is The Superior."
Amy could see how Silver's voice had changed on perspective. She felt sorry for the boy, she held his hand to try and give him some type of comfort. "We will fix this Silver. I promise."
"You know," Silver began. "My people have the hope that one day, one of the descendants of the Dark King will come back and claim his rightful place as the King and with that, bring a new era of peace. I used to believe that when I was a kid, but eventually I lost hope on that ever happening. Instead, I wanted to become a hero and take the matter into my own hands."
"We won't fail."
Amy then opened the ventilation door with a kick. and landed softly thanks to Silver's psychokinesis.
"Oh, but by the way, "Amy added quickly as she walked towards the Chaos Emerald. You were right, Sonic the Hedgehog can use the power of the Chaos Emeralds. But so, can Shadow."
"WAIT A SECOND, ARE YOU SAYING THAT SONIC AND SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG ARE ACTUALLY REAL?!"
With that, the alarms went on. Amy didn't think much, as she was fast to break the glass in which the Green Chaos Emerald was inside of with her hammer.
"You really need to learn how to control yourself, you know that!"
Silver had to admit that she was right. But he couldn't control it, hearing that his childhood heroes were alive and actually real was too much for him to handle. He smiled as they both began to climb up the air conduct again.
What a great time to be alive.
.
.
.
It was pretty easy to enter the base. He had to admit that the lasers in the air conduit system was a nice touch but he honestly expected more of the 'elite' Mechanic Team. Maybe he was just getting too good on this.
But one thing Shadow couldn't do was to know where everything was. He knocked down one the G.U.N agents and took his uniform to go by unseen. After all, there was a lot of security cameras and if one of the officers were to see a black hedgehog with red stripes on the building, well... it will be pretty much end game for him.
"This new project we are working on is killing me." Shadow heard an employee say as he walked onto the employees' dining room. Firstly, to get information about the whereabouts of the yellow fox and secondly, to get a small cup of coffee.
"Tell me about it. I don't know what Mr.Prower is thinking to do what that travel machine." Said the employee to his coworker who was eating as well.
Shadow grabbed a plastic cup from the dispenser and waited for his black coffee to come out of the machine.
"You gotta admire him tho, spending all day on the F-5 must be a pain in the butt. I mean come on, he is the Mechanic's Team main director! You have a nice office on F-7, use it!"
Sometimes Shadow thought that his job was way too easy.
The black coffee came out of the machine successfully and he didn't hesitate even a second to take a big gulp out of the still boiling liquid. Just how he liked it.
He was about to walk out of the room but the two friends caught his attention. "Hey, you!"
Shadow turned around, hoping that he was covered enough to not show any indication that he was Shadow the Hedgehog.
"This is the dining room for the Mechanic's Team members ONLY... Agents are on F-2"
Shadow took a moment to look at the black wolf in front of him. His attire similar to the one Tails was so known for. Googles, boots, a belt around his waist that contained every key possible and of course that dirty look.
"I am sorry I just got transferred, I'll leave now." Shadow turned around to face the door just to once again to be interrupted on the act. "Transfer from where?"
"Capital Mobius."
"You are from the Capital? Oh, have you met Shadow the Hedgehog? I heard he is located there, he was the top spy until he switched sides and helped that pink hedgehog kill G.U.N
He wanted to just nod and keep going on his day. However, it had been a while since he had heard any news about G.U.N's current stance. Maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to make a little bit of conversation about the topic.
"I saw him a couple of times, he was always busy so I never talked to him."
"Maybe it was better that way, I always thought he was too edgy. Now it turns out he is crazy too...Don't surprise me too much actually."
This was going to be a long talk.
And it was.
Strangely enough, Shadow had made two friends that day. And he learned two important things. G.U.N had ordered all intelligence theme to work on a new project, a Time Machine and experiment a new-found rock, which they did not know anything about.
Also that Amy and he were now topping the list of the most wanted criminals by G.U.N.
But he already knew that.
Shadow jumped into the elevator and pressed F-5. While the elevator was going up, he thought of the first thing he would say to Tails. He knew that they didn't have the best relationship.
Right now, the best bet he could get is that the Rabbit girl had told him about their situation already. With that, earn his trust enough so he tells Shadow the information he needed.
He stepped out of the elevator and walked himself around the hallway. He looked left to right, trying to spot behind the glass doors the famous two tail boy. Weirdly enough, there were no other workers passing by the hallway. Shadow didn't give too much thought about and kept looking. A few minutes passed and finally, he found what was looking for.
Tails was looking diligently on something that Shadow couldn't tell what it was. Moving back and forth, reading papers, screwing nails again and again just to unscrew them and start again. He didn't notice Shadow's presence until he made himself known.
"We need to talk."
.
.
.
"I already have enough trouble as it is... now you are asking me to give the location of a biological weapon that doesn't exist?"
Tails closed with the key the door to the lab and went back to his seat, where he began writing again on a piece of paper.
"I know it's too much to ask, but you have to believe me when I say this is all for Amy." Shadow placed both of his hands down on the table, mask down to his chin to show that he was being serious about all of it.
"Your worst mistake has always been underestimating your enemy."
Tails then pointed at his ears and that when Shadow knew it. It was already odd enough that they didn't have security cameras around the room nor the halls, but one thing they had for sure was mini microphones, hidden in all over the building probably.
"I think I know how far I can go." Shadow tried playing it cool, as he saw Tails passing down the paper he was previously writing on before. A clear note was written on it:
"I pressed the button that's under the table to call G.U.N agents to come to this floor already. You have less than 2 minutes to get out. Sorry that I am not able to help you directly, but they have Cream, and I must finish this time machine as soon as possible so they can release her. If you really with Amy then tell her this:
"There's nothing we can do but watch"
Shadow looked up to Tails to let him known that he had understood. He folded the paper and made his personal mission to deliver it to Amy as soon as possible.
The only thing now was to get out of that place as soon as possible.
Piece of cake.
.
.
.
Shadow looked around and panicked as he didn't see a clue of Amy and Silver. Just where were they? He was close to starting screaming their names but soon approaching footsteps followed.
"Shadow! You are back!"
Amy run towards him and wanted to hug him but decided that right now it wasn't the time. They were being followed by G.U.N for stealing the Chaos Emerald and she still didn't know how to tell Shadow without him getting angry.
"Tails gave me this, he said you would know by reading this."
He handed over the letter to Amy and he gave a look to Silver. Who shakes nervously at the sight of him staring.
"I can't believe it! They have Cream!."
"We have to hurry up and decider who's behind all of this if you want her free. So remember, what did the fox boy meant by "There's nothing we can do but watch."
Amy handed over the paper to Silver who began reading while Amy was in deep thought. It was one of these days that he wished he had paid attention to ancient literature. Although he could understand Amy and her black friend, the writing system and grammar were a bit different from the one in the future. He thankfully could understand the message within.
"I got it!"
Silver and Shadow turned to face Amy as they waited for an answer.
"Tails told me that the first time I saw him after Sonic 'died'. It must be there somewhere."
"Where?"
"Well I don't remember exactly, it's been a long time but we have the Chaos Emerald! That should work right?"
"You have what?" Shadow said surprised.
"I'll explain later, we have to leave. I'll think of the place on my mind, Shadow you conduct the Chaos Control."
Amy could have sworn that she heard Silver's neck break in two at how hard he looked at Shadow.
"WAIT! HE'S THE SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG?"
"All right, everyone grab into me," Shadow said as Amy handed him the green Chaos Emerald. Amy held his hand and Silver's as well.
"ARE YOU JUST TWO GOING TO IGNORE ME?"
"Chaos Control!"
.
.
.
The place was dusty and rusty, just liked Amy remember but older. The three hedgehogs successfully tele-transported to the place Amy was thinking of.
"This was Tails' first laboratory after we thought Sonic was dead, I came here to see how he was doing. Eggman had begun his attack on us and Tails just told me "There's nothing we can do but watch."
Shadow walked towards the big containers. And saw them carefully being stored and labeled as "extremely dangerous."
"So you began the resistance?" Silver asked still admiring the pink hedgehog. "Well, me and a red echidna I know."
"I found it, track Communication system, I'll be waiting."
Amy and Silver looked at each other then at Shadow, confused.
"Shadow, to who are you talking to?"
Amy's voice began to break, she didn't want to believe what her eyes were seeing.
"I think it is obvious enough...Chaos Control!"
.
.
.
Amy and Silver had lost track of time. The last thing they can remember was being knocked out by Shadow's Chaos Control.
Amy saw blurry at first, and let a few seconds pass to let her eyes adjust to the present darkness. Everything was just like before, but Shadow who was looking at the now tied up couple in front of them.
"So everything was a lie?"
Amy turned her head to look at Shadow, still not believing that the black hedgehog had indeed betrayed her.
"G.U.N needed the location of this forgotten biological weapon. We were aware that Tails was the only one who had that information, but we couldn't falsely accuse a G.U.N member of good reputation of murder. People would lose faith in us. So we trusted that in the right circumstances, Tails would eventually speak up about the location to someone he trusted...that's when you come into place."
Shadow then laid his back on the coldness of the metal wall, very close to the containers that had that very dangerous liquid inside of them.
"So, everything...from the very beginning...you wanting to help me, your kindness, everything was a lie?"
"I had a mission to complete, I am just doing my job."
"So, even the murder of the G.U.N's Commander...you planned everything,"
"Absolutely, all of that was fake...he is actually on his way over here to claim the containers."
Amy felt her throat going dry as all the tears were begging to let out. But right now it wasn't the time, she looked at Silver and checked if he had any serious injuries. He was breathing, his head down, at least the fact that he was alright made her feel calm.
"If you start crying, I'll end you."
Amy looked one more time at Shadow, she breathed and maybe right now it wasn't the perfect time to say it, but she did.
"I like you Shadow."
Shadow's eyes widen in surprise at the sudden confession. He waited for Amy to continue and she did.
"You kind acts, the way you worry about others, the way you make me feel when I am around you...All of that made me fall in love with you...but everything was a lie. And so, my love for you as well."
Shadow relaxed his hands and very confidently began to walk towards the pink hedgehog. For the first time in her life, Amy was afraid of Shadow.
He bent down in one knee and forcefully grabbed Amy's cheeks, making her look directly at his eyes. Her skin shivered by the contact, and Amy really thought that Shadow was about to steal a kiss from him. She closed her eyes waiting for it to happen...but it never did.
Instead, a dash of blue flew across the room. Amy could recognize those green eyes anywhere, and if looks could kill, Shadow would be dead by now.
There he was, the known world hero, the old blue friend...
Sonic the Hedgehog.

Undesirable Truth, Part 5
I woke with a gasp and sat straight up, cold sweat beaded on my brow and my eyes wide. I looked around the room in a frenzy. I was in Sonic’s home. The rain had stopped, moonlight was softly pouring in from the window and I could hear the ocean waves crashing in the distance. That dream… It wasn’t just a dream. It was a memory. That was the night I was kidnapped.
That was the night that I lost all my memories and who I was to a monster. As I started to remember it more clearly, my eyes filled with tears. I had wanted to be rescued so much and no help came for me. I remembered how much I screamed for help, as loud as my lungs would let me. Yet no one answered. My heart broke on that terrible night and now it was breaking again. I had counted on Sonic to rescue me and he hadn’t. Now I was a lost soul, so far away from everything I knew, crying in the middle of the night. Alone. Why? Why wasn’t I saved? Was I somehow not worthy of it? Did I do something wrong that warranted my struggle to be ignored? Was this somehow my fault? Did no one care at all? Was I just some nobody that no one noticed was gone all this time? No one cared if I was lost forever?
With the sound of each crashing wave, another sob escaped. It felt like the whole world was against me. All those years I was abandoned to servitude. And I would have easily still been there if I hadn’t acted for myself. How much longer would I have been there if Sonic was never captured? My whole life? The very thought made my stomach churn. As I drew up my knees and buried my face in them, I tried to keep my cries as quiet as possible. I knew that this was something I had to keep to myself, everything that led me here was my unanswered cry for help. The logical part of me knew that it wasn’t Sonic’s fault for not knowing, but my heart was broken all the same.
The morning after, I woke up very late. Sonic had already gone on his way to buy groceries since the fridge was apparently empty aside from the foods that only Tails liked. It was just as well; I didn’t feel like I could face Sonic after last night.
“Good morning!” Tails greeted.
He was as cheerful as ever but I just wasn’t feeling up to matching his liveliness. He tried to ask me what was wrong but I gave him a vague answer. I needed some time away from people to get a grip on myself. I told Tails I was going to go explore the beach and started walking out there. I didn’t really want to be on the beach, but where would I go? Since I was alone, I could go anywhere, but at the same time the wide-open spaces that the world presented were seemingly void if not dangerous. Even though I escaped Eggman’s clutches, it didn’t feel like my life was any less hollow. Nor did I feel free. This life felt the same except instead of being trapped by taking orders, I was now trapped by fear. How could I make something of my life if it was so infringed? My mind went back to what I was crying over last night.
I was never saved. The very thought brought tears back into my eyes. Why wasn’t I worth saving? Why did I have to suffer under the old man’s boot for so long in order to finally escape out of my own means? Was I really so unremarkable that my plight wasn’t even noticed? These questions spiraled in my mind like flakes of ashes in a bowl of water. Every time a question circled back it was answered with the same response. It was because I wasn’t good enough to be saved. I wasn’t loved enough, I wasn’t smart enough, wasn’t strong enough, wasn’t fast enough, wasn’t valuable enough. I wasn’t enough! And no one cared about me!
As I stood in the sand, facing the wind, trying not to cry, I heard Amy call for me. I hurriedly dried my eyes and cleared my throat to hide that my demons got the better of me as she approached. I didn’t do a good job.
“Are you alright?” She asked. She knew I had been crying.
I looked away and sniffled.
“Are you going to tell me what’s wrong?”
It almost sounded like she was scolding me, how old did she think I was? …Actually, how old was I? I knew it was around my twenties or so but that’s all I was told. I really wished I had read that file from the lab, perhaps my age was written in there.
“Well, if you’re not going to tell me I can’t help you.” She sighed, “That’s too bad too, I was hoping we could spend some time together…”
“What kind of time?” I asked.
“I wanted to go shopping for a party dress but it’s no fun by myself.”
“Shopping again? We did that two days ago already.”
“But you have to get ready for the party too~!”
“Don’t go wasting your money on me… I won’t be going to any parties anyway.”
Amy shook her head; she was adamant about this.
“I know something’s bothering you, so why don’t you tell me?”
I hesitated to say anything but I answered,
“It’s personal, I really don’t wanna get into it.”
She pouted a little.
“Well, at least come along. Even if you don’t want anything, we can have some fun together.”
I knew she was going to try asking me about my problem later but her offer was tempting. I agreed to go.
Now that I knew what to expect, going to the shops were less overwhelming and much more fun. It was nice seeing the shops this time around, there wasn’t the debilitating pressure to just pick something, so I was free to enjoy the things I saw without the commitment of buying or trying anything on. I got to feel new fabrics without having to be interested in wearing them. The world wasn’t so void and scary after all.
Amy pulled me along to a shop that primarily sold party dresses, it made every effort to make its appearance sophisticated and trendy. There were a lot of muted colors with pops of bright colors in a few corners, I suppose in an effort to make each primary color stand out more. I was more than happy to wait while Amy shopped around in here but, the moment she turned her head to look at me I realized that we were not here for her.
“Oh no!” I protested, “You’ve already done so much for me! I can’t take advantage of you again like this!”
“But you have to like something in here, right? The town is having a spring festival and there’s a dance that you’ll need to dress up for!”
“But I don’t-!”
“We’d all really like you to be there. You’ll love it, trust me!”
They all wanted me to be part of this? I was… wanted. How could I refuse?
Oddly enough, looking at all the dresses did put my mind at ease a bit. It at least gave my mind something else to focus on other than the events of last night.
“Hey Amy… How did you and Sonic meet?”
“Hm? Oh, it was a long time ago, he saved me from Metal Sonic when we were just kids. I guess you could say it was love at first sight.” She said with a wistful smile.
Oh, I thought, she was one of the lucky ones.
“…How did he know to save you?”
She blinked.
“What do you mean?”
“Well… you didn’t know each other. So how did he know you were in trouble?”
“Actually, we sort of knew each other… I used to follow him around before then. It was a silly crush thing.” She seemed uncomfortable admitting this so I thought it was best to drop the subject.
I picked up an outfit that I thought would work out for the time being, it was a tight gray dress with a black ribbon around the waist. If I was going to be the kind of person that blends into a crowd I might as well commit to it.
After trying it on and convincing Amy that it was actually a viable option despite the color, we started on our way home. My mood had greatly improved but there was still the lingering doubt.
“I’m glad we found something for you. But one of these days you’re going to have to pick something with color!” Amy teased as we were walking back, but she was still concerned. “Are you finally going to tell me what’s been bothering you?”
“I… It’s nothing.”
“You wouldn’t be this upset for nothing. I haven’t known you for too long but I can tell it’s been on your mind all day.”
“…I just need some time to think about it.”
“All day wasn’t enough for you?”
“I just-! last night… It was just a nightmare, that’s all.”
“Nightmares aren’t nothing. If it’s been bothering you this much then maybe you’ll feel better if you just talked about it?”
“Well, it…”
I couldn’t finish.
“It’s alright, you don’t have to tell me… Maybe when you’re ready we can talk about it, okay?”
“No, you’re right, I think I do need to talk about it. But it’s just hard!” My voice wavered at the end.
“Hey…” She placed her hand on my shoulder and looked me in the eyes, “It’s okay. I know you’ve been through a lot, so I can help you. Okay?”
I ended up telling her about my nightmare and how it was about my kidnapping. The whole thing that started this mess. I told her about being taken from my home in the middle of the night, and being held prisoner but I skipped over that part about my hope for rescue and the experimentation I endured. She knew immediately what I needed to do.
“You need to tell Sonic about this.”
“Why?”
“He was the one that saved you, right? He- “
“Wrong.”
“What?”
“He didn’t save me, I saved myself…”
“Hmmmm, I’m sensing some bitterness here. You sure you’ve told me everything?”
I reserved my right to remain silent.
When we reached the house, Sonic and Tails were there waiting for me. I wasn’t sure how to greet Sonic.
“Hey! Long time, no see!” He said with a bright smile.
I smiled back, but my emotional distress blunted my greeting.
“What’s the matter?” He asked.
Amy was quick to let him know I wasn’t feeling like myself lately (as if I knew what being myself felt like).
“Oh,” Sonic replied, “well I think I know a quick way to cheer you up! How about another adventure?”
I shook my head.
“Hm, that serious, huh?” He asked.
Amy took Sonic aside and they had a small whispering match. No doubt it was about my nightmare. Afterwards, Sonic sheepishly walked back over and asked,
“Do you have a minute? Maybe we should talk.”
We sat together outside on the porch in silence, neither one of us wanted to start. As my mind started thinking for a place to begin, it dug up the old memories of my kidnapping and my heartbreak. He finally broke the silence.
“Amy told me you had a nightmare last night… It was about your kidnapping?”
A wave of grief washed over my heart. I wanted to hide it was much as I could but there wasn’t much I could hide at this point. I knew holding it in was only going to make me hurt more. I told him everything I remembered about my kidnapping. My voice held strong against the tears until I reached the part about the experiment and I couldn’t continue. Before I could stop it, another bout of sorrow surged up from my heart and pushed its way up to the surface. As my face twisted in grief and I hung my head. Sonic put his hand on my shoulder and I turned away to hide my face with my free arm as my held back tears flowed out. I couldn’t stop. All my fears were coming back, I would be alone again just like I was in that lab. Just like I was on that night. I held my face in my hands.
“I know you were counting on me to save you… And I’m sorry I couldn’t.” He admitted. “But you became your own hero, and you saved me in the process. It didn’t matter if you couldn’t remember who you were because your freedom was with you the whole time. You were always free. You just needed to remember that.”
“But no one came for me! No one cared!”
“Sometimes we have to make the first move before someone can help us. I’m sure someone cared about you back then, just like we care about you! Even when you’re all alone, you still have everyone who ever cared for you in your heart. You carry them with you.”
“But what if we had never met? I’d still be there! I would have never learned the truth!”
“I don’t think so. When I met you, I knew you were someone who had her own way of doing things. You were able to find out the truth without my help, all I did was speed things along. That’s all.”
I was able to finally start drying my tears, he was making a lot of sense. He reached back into the quills on his back and handed me the file I had taken from the lab.
“Here. You almost left this behind but I picked it up before we left so you could have it. I’m not sure if you’ve read any of it yet. But I think it might help.”
“Thanks, Sonic… I’m sorry I was so worked up.”
“No worries, I know this is hard for you.”
I opened the file and started to read. Much of what was written were things I had remembered in the nightmare and the life I was living while in the base. There was nothing about my name written anywhere but the latest entry that was dated a week ago listed how old I was. Twenty-five.
“Looks like I turned Twenty-five last week.” I stated.
“Congratulations! We should celebrate!”
We did in fact celebrate. The whole time Amy had me out shopping, Sonic and Tails were planning a party for me. Something about a naming ceremony. Tails was eager to explain.
“Our culture has a ceremony where kids get to pick their names for the rest of their lives. We usually have it around 15 but you’re a special case. It’s kinda like a birthday but a lot better!”
“Tails had his last year!” Sonic beamed proudly.
“Why hold this ceremony for me?” I asked.
“It didn’t seem fair that Eggman stuck you with ‘Cat’ as a name so we thought you might appreciate the chance to change that.” Sonic replied.
I couldn’t stop the grateful smile spreading across my face, “Okay! How does it work?”
Tails explained further.
“Well, first we start by throwing off our old given name by lighting a candle with our old name carved into it and letting the whole thing burn away. While the candle burns, we announce our new name to our friends and family and they are supposed to discuss it.”
“Discuss it?”
“Yeah, they’re supposed to talk to each other to see if the name fits the person. For me it was easy cuz I was already using my adult name anyway. I can thank Sonic for that.” Tails looked to Sonic with a smile.
“What can I say,” Sonic replied, “I’m good at handing out names.”
“Not for me!” I retorted. “Thanks to you Knuckles won’t call me anything but Tiny!”
Sonic chuckled and shrugged, “Hey, if the name fits…”
“Don’t!” I warned then looked to Tails with urgency, “Can I leave him out of my ceremony?”
Unfortunately, I was not able to leave Sonic out of the ceremony since he helped plan it. I didn’t expect so many people to be here for the party but Sonic had invited all of his friends to come and help me pick my new name. As we were all gathered in his small living room, they had me light the candle with my old name carved into it and start and naming process. To be honest, I had never really thought of an alternative name for myself.
“How about Tempest?” I suggested, with all the anguish and upset feelings I had had storming inside me that day. I thought the name was appropriate.
Everyone in the room collectively grumbled.
“I know three Tempests already, Hon. You need something more unique.” Rouge replied.
“Oh?”
“Yeah, Tempest is a pretty common name.” Amy explained.
“Every new kid on the block wants to call themself Tempest.” Vector added.
“Hm…” I thought a little more.
“I still like ‘Tiny’!” Sonic teased.
“I second that!” Knuckles snickered.
“Don’t! Don’t you start!” I snapped.
The room reverberated with a chuckle. The candle was still burning on. Tails warned me before the ceremony that a new name was supposed to be chosen before the candle reached its end. I was starting to get nervous.
“Let’s try something that fits your personality.” Amy suggested.
I gulped, no one here really knew me and the last thing I wanted was an examination of my personality. In fact, I was already hot under the collar from being the center of attention for so long. I wanted this over with quickly.
“In that case,” Knuckles piped up, “we should call her Loud Mouth.”
“That’s more a name for you!” I sniped back.
There were snickers floating around the room as Knuckles grimaced and looked away red faced.
“I kinda like where Knuckles is going there. You are pretty sassy.” Sonic commented.
I gave him a questioning look. Did I need to challenge him too?
“She does seem to have a fire-cracker spirit.” Espio commented.
“Okay, does Fire-cracker sound like a good name?” Tails asked.
I shook my head.
“No, something smaller than that.” Sonic said with a smirk.
I sent him a glare.
“Spit-fire?” Charmy suggested.
“I don’t want spit in my name!” I replied, “That’s gross!”
“Hm, Cherry bomb…?” someone muttered under their breath.
“Yeah! Cherry Bomb!” Amy exclaimed. “It’s cute and it sounds sassy!”
Everyone seemed to like the name, including myself.
The room was humming with everyone talking, as I thought about the possibility of being called Cherry Bomb for the rest of my life, I wasn’t so sure about it yet.
“Hold on!” Knuckles protested, “I don’t think that name fits her at all!”
“And why is that??” I retorted.
“Because!” Knuckles crossed his arms and grumped, “You have to actually do something to earn a name like that. I got my name from my fighting skills. Sonic got his name from his speed. Where is yours coming from?”
I was at a loss for words and it hurt. Sonic stood up in my defense.
“Actually, she’s done a lot to earn that name.” He said, “When we were still in that base as prisoners, she always had me beat when it came to snarky one-liners. And let’s not forget how often she’s clapped back at you.”
Knuckles glared Sonic down.
“Should I tell everyone about the door incident?”
Amy snickered. She remembered.
Knuckles grumbled and sat back down; he would relent for now it seemed. Sonic looked back toward me.
“Congratulations, Cherry Bomb!”
The candle on my old life burned itself out as the party went on. I got to spend more time with Sonic’s friends and knew with more certainty who I was.
The next day, I woke up with the weight of all my previous troubles gone. The sun wasn’t shinning, it was actually really overcast, but that didn’t stop my good mood. I hopped out of bed to go out into the world and make a difference for myself, I went outside to catch a sweet ocean breeze until I heard Tails scream.
“Look out!”
Before I could react, Metal Sonic zoomed in and caught me around the waist. It was enough to force the air out of my lungs. Sonic was quick to pursue as Metal carried me away, back toward what I could only assume was Eggman’s base.
“N-no! NO! Don’t! Don’t let him take me!” I cried in a panic.
I worked so hard to get myself free physically and mentally, to regress now would be the end. I reached out for Sonic who was right behind and closing in. He could almost reach me until Metal threw me forward and turned to deliver a blow to Sonic’s gut using all the momentum that his opponent had built up behind him to do the damage. Sonic was down. I was petrified, I knew running was useless, all I could do was watch in terror was Metal made his way toward me to snatch me up again.
I had nearly resigned to return to my old life until Knuckles swooped in from nowhere and punched the side of Metal’s face. He knocked him down to the ground a few feet back just in time for Sonic to recover. In a matter of seconds, they were both beating Metal to bits. Knuckles’ fist connected with Metal Sonic’s core and that was the end of it. I was safe.
Knuckles dusted off his hands and gave me a snide look.
“Well, that takes care of that. I guess you’re not so much a Cherry Bomb after all.”
“Will you shut up?! How would you like it if something like that came after you?”
He scoffed and flexed his arms, “I could handle it.”
“Oh, sure. You and your last three brain cells.”
“Hey! I saved your life! You should be grateful!”
We glared daggers at each other.
“You honeymooners ready to go back inside or what? I’ve got an icepack with my name on it and I’m not gonna keep it waiting.” Sonic held his injured stomach with discomfort.
Knuckles grumbled something to himself and started on his way back to the house. I was about to follow but I took one last look back.
As Metal Sonic lay in pieces on the ground, I couldn’t help but feel guilty. Metal was my first friend after losing my memory. But after Sonic arrived, he was pushed to the sidelines because he couldn’t quite compete as far as actual social interaction went. Even so, it was because of Metal that I grew familiar with Sonic, they both shared a lot of mannerisms and that helped me feel more at ease around Sonic because I understood him before I even knew him. And even though Metal was a machine sent here to kill me or at the very least take me back to Eggman, I couldn’t help but feel a fondness as one would in finding an old childhood toy. Metal deserved a second chance just like I did. Maybe he needed someone to remind him that he was already free like I did?
“Guys…”
They turned and looked my way.
“What if I fixed him?”
“Are you crazy??” Knuckles exclaimed, “We just saved you from that thing and now you want to fix it?”
“Hear me out! I think I can make him good or at least be on our side!”
“No way, Tiny! You’re playing with fire!” He picked me up and started to carry me under his arm like I was a sack of potatoes. No matter how much I squirmed and shouted he wouldn’t let go as he started walking back to the house.
Later that afternoon, I snuck back to where we had left Metal and I picked up all the pieces I could find and brought it into Tails’ workshop. He was more open to discuss the idea of fixing Metal and turning him into a good boy.
“Are you sure this is something that can actually be done?” Tails asked as he inspected some of the pieces that I had brought back.
“I think so. When I taught him how to play hide and seek, I wasn’t actually teaching but programing it into him. If we’re patient enough, I think the two of us can rewrite some of his coding.”
“Isn’t that kinda like brainwashing though…?”
I stared at Tails and blinked.
“…Tails… Sweetie… Sass-bucket… He’s a machine. He don’t got no brain to wash!”
Tails pouted at me a bit then pondered the possibilities, “I guess we could try it…”
A week later, after we had been working on our project in secret, Sonic entered the workshop by himself without any forewarning and was dumbfounded to find both Tails and I working late into the night trying to place Metal Sonic’s head on a mannequin that we had found discarded. We all paused in stunned silence for a few moments while Sonic blinked a few times. Perhaps in an effort to make sure his eyes were working properly.
“Guys…” He questioned, “Why is there an oddly familiar scarecrow in our workshop?”
Tails was slowly losing his nerve. But I was determined.
“We’re making Metal Sonic a good guy.” I replied.
“Okay…” Sonic subtly nodded and scratched his chin. “And uh… why? Are you doing this?”
“Cuz… we can?”
“Fair enough…” He turned around and walked right back out of the workshop.
Tails and I looked at each other for a second to make sure that really did happen. Afterwards we went right back to working away, we almost got Metal’s head to stick on when Sonic zoomed right back in.
“Wait a minute!”
This startled Tails and he lost his grip on Metal’s head causing it to fall with a loud CLANK.
“Just what do you guys think you’re doing??”
I saw Metal’s eyes flicker on for a second.
“SH!”
“Don’t shush-!”
“SSSSSHSHSHHSHSH!! He’s awake!” I whispered.
Metal blinked, only one of his eyes rolling around, blindly looking around the room. He pinged out P0-L0 as he continued to look. We were all dead silent. I looked over at the pieces of his body left scattered on the worktable. They didn’t move.
“P0-L0” He chimed again until his eyes flickered out and we could all breathe in peace.
“This is exactly what I was afraid of!” Sonic commented. “You sure this is really a good idea?”
“It should be fine!” I reassured, “Tails and I looked into all his parts and found that his optics don’t work so he couldn’t really see us.”
“That’s not what I’m talking about! You’re trying to piece together a killing machine!” He pulled me aside and murmured, “I know you’re kind of attached to him, but Metal’s dangerous.”
“I know that… But we’re only going one piece at a time. We’ll try to get his head right first. Then it’ll work! He deserves a second chance too.”
Sonic looked at Metal and sighed.
“Alright, just don’t go overboard and let him loose. Okay?”
I agreed and Sonic went to bed after grumbling something about how he was too tired for this.
Tails and I worked long hours into the night, reprogramming Metal and getting small pieces to work and respond. By the time we finally went to sleep it was in the early hours of the morning. I sent Tails to bed half an hour before I turned in. After I shut off the light to the workshop, Metal Sonic’s eyes flickered on again. I waited. Metal chimed P0-L0 and waited. Against my better judgement I called out ‘Marco’ then Metal started to play an audio recording.
“I don’t care what it takes for you to bring her back. Even if you have to kill her! Get me my test subject at any cost! I need that data to complete my research, got it?”
Then Metal shut off again. Spooky bastard.
The afternoon after, I hadn’t even gotten a chance to wake up and Knuckles was already in my face shouting.
“I thought I told you not to play with fire!” He scolded.
I grunted and turned over to go back to sleep. He pulled me back over.
“Oh no you don’t! You don’t get to snuggle up all cozy while I’m talking to you!”
I slapped my hand into his face and pushed him away.
“Just let her rest, Knucklehead.” Sonic said from the kitchen. “It’ll give us a chance to throw Metal in the dumpster.”
“Don’t you dare!” I said and started to sit up.
“So now Sleeping-Tiny decides to wake up, huh? Knuckles snorted then walked over to the kitchen to snack.
I stretched out my arms and slowly started to ease out of bed. It took me a while to get ready for the day considering Knuckles was hounding me every chance he got. But once I was fully awake, I set him straight.
“Listen, tough guy! This is a project Tails and I have been working on for a whole week! If you screw this up, I’ll give you something to really be fussing about!”
“Ha! I’d like to see you try!”
He started on his way toward the workshop but Tails blocked the door.
“Out of the way, Tails!”
“No way! I worked hard on this too! I’m not gonna let it go to waste!”
Knuckles sighed heavily and glared back at me. Checkmate.
“Fine!” He yielded, “But from now on, you don’t work on this thing unless I’m watching over you guys.”
Tails and I groaned.
Regardless of Knuckles’ presence, Tails and I continued to work. Busying ourselves with reprogramming Metal a bit more. We finally had his software set up that if a certain lyric was hummed or sung, he would automatically shut off. Tails and I recorded our voices several times in order to make sure it would always work. We even brought Sonic in to do that same thing. I didn’t know he had such a good singing voice.
Knuckles only found the whole process silly and refused to record anything. We left him alone as I continued to work on reprogramming Metal and Tails worked on fixing Metal’s busted parts with whatever we had lying around.
“We need to do something about his optics.” Tails mentioned as he was affixing the broken metal end of a screwdriver to Metal’s left hand as a replacement fingertip.
“Hm… Maybe we could use an old video camera?” I suggested as I was reading through some lines of code trying to pinpoint where I could make the necessary changes.
“Too expensive. I don’t think we have one of those anyway.” Tails replied.
“Why fix his eyes at all?” Knuckles questioned, “He’ll be safer without them.”
I sent Knuckles a glare.
“We’re giving him a second chance not neutering him!” I remarked.
“Whatever…” Knuckles scoffed, “Just don’t come crying to me if he wakes up and tears you to pieces.”
“If I recall correctly, you came crying to us!”
Knuckles scoffed again.
“Cherry,” Tails said, “what if we settled on a motion detector for Metal’s eyes? It’s not the best but it could work as a good replacement for the time being.”
“Yeah, that should work. It’s probably better than giving him full vision before his reprogrammed.”
“Do you really need to be doing that?” Knuckles asked, “Just erase everything and start over or something.”
“I can’t do that! Eggman has a fail-safe in all his machines that if their programming is deleted the basic stuff is reinstalled and takes over.”
“So basically,” Tails queried, “it goes back to factory settings?”
“Pretty much.”
“But I’ve been watching you go through line after line and it’s driving me nuts!” Knuckles complained.
“Then watch something else!”
Knuckles grunted and slumped onto the nearest seat to pout. As we continued to work, he fell asleep at one of the worktables. I tried to ignore him but his snoring was just so loud! Even Tails needed to take a break and went outside to spend time with Sonic on the beach. I was in the process of reattaching Metal Sonic’s arm to his torso when Knuckles nearly rattled the windows. I walked over to him and shook his shoulder to wake him up. No luck. After pulling my hand back to go back to work I saw that I had mistakenly left a handprint of oil on him. Then I got a mischievous idea. While he continued to sleep, I drew a mustache, bushy brows and a goatee on his face. I snickered at my art for a moment then went back to work.
He slept like that for a while, I had finished with Metal’s arm and started getting the motion sensor attached as temporary eyes when Sonic walked in.
“WHO’S READY TO PARTYYYYYYYYYY!”
I jumped in my seat, Knuckles jolted awake and Metal’s eyes flickered on.
“Give us a warning before you charge in here like that! Jeeeez!” I exclaimed.
Sonic shrugged.
“Sorry, I didn’t think it would be so quiet in here.” He saw Knuckles’ face and snickered but didn’t say a word about the beautiful artwork I had left on it. “Anyway, Tails and I are setting up a bonfire on the beach. You wanna join us?”
“Sure, let me just reach a stopping point and we’ll join you.”
Knuckles eyed me with suspicion, somewhat cluing into Sonic’s snicker but not completely catching on. A few minutes later, Tails walked in to tell us we needed to hurry if we wanted any roasted marshmallows. At seeing Knuckles’ face he also started to snicker. He left the room before Knuckles could ask just what was so funny. I continued to work in silence, pretending that I didn’t notice until Knuckles walked over and picked me up by the nape of the neck.
This was a very odd sensation, everything I was holding in my hands fell out and I couldn’t move my arms or legs. All I could do was hang there as he lifted me up.
“I don’t know why, but everyone around here seems to think something’s funny and I have a sneaking suspicion you’ve got something to do with it!” He said as he glared into my eyes.
I averted mine.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about!” I replied.
“Is that so?”
“Y-yup!”
“What are you hiding from me?!”
“Nothing! I think you’re just imagining things. It’s probably nothing!”
“We’ll see about that!”
He rushed out of the workshop and toward Sonic and Tails who were relaxing around the bonfire. He thrust me out toward them and exclaimed.
“WHAT DID SHE DO?”
Sonic and Tails did their best to hold in their snickers but as soon as Knuckles asked, they were howling with laughter. I knew for sure my goose was cooked. I just hoped he didn’t get any ideas about throwing me into the fire.
“I KNEW IT!” He shouted. “WHAT DID YOU DO?”
“Go look in a mirror!” Sonic replied between his laughter and gasps for air.
Knuckles promptly dropped me and ran inside to go see what Sonic meant. I started running down the beach to keep him from picking me up again. As I was running, I heard Knuckles shout from the house.
“YOU’RE DEAD-MEAT, TINY!”
I looked back and saw he was chasing after me, fists at the ready. I ran faster and screamed.
“JUST YOU WAIT UNTIL I GET MY HANDS ON YOU!” He bellowed.
He chased me down the beach for what seemed like forever. I was going to run out of track soon, I needed to find a place to hide! I ran into a collection of trees by the beach, they got thicker the further I ran in. Perfect! If I was careful, he’d lose sight of me and I could double back to the house and get back to work. Maybe even find a better hiding place if it came down to it.
Before I could get too far into the brush he reached out and snagged me again. This time by the arm.
“Draw on my face, will ya? I’ll show you!”
“You deserved it!” I shouted as I tried prying his hand off. “Next time don’t snore!”
He dragged me back to the beach and toward the ocean, he actually seemed like he was having fun. This was a bad sign! He was gonna do something but what?
“That’s big talk from a little fire-cracker!” He teased.
I pulled my arm back and started running again but he grabbed me by the nape of my neck again. Now that I was aware, I tensed up my arms and legs and started squirming so I could move them this time.
“No fair! Let me go!” I shouted and tried to kick him.
He dodged my kick and chuckled.
“Nice try, Tiny! But I won this time!”
I crossed my arms and pouted.
Knuckles seemed to think this was funny.
“Aaaw, is de wittle Chewwy Bomb upset?” He mocked and started to poke my cheek. “Is she sad cuz big stwong Knuckles outsmarted her?”
“If this is what you call outsmarting, I’d hate to see what you call a genius move.” I remarked. “And will you quit jabbing my face? You’re gonna leave a bruise or something!”
Knuckles only laughed.
“Oh, am I being too rough on your poor sensitive cheekies?” He started boring his finger into my cheek with more force.
I had had enough! As he continued to poke my cheek, I turned my head and bit his finger.
“OW!”
As soon as he dropped me, I bolted for the house leaving him behind to bemoan his injured hand and shout threats at me. I ran past Sonic and Tails and into the workshop. Knuckles was soon behind me but couldn’t find me in the shop anywhere. I stayed as quiet as I could as he searched the workshop for me.
“You can’t hide forever!” He shouted.
I continued to hide where I was, my muscles where aching at all the effort but I was confident he would give up before too long. He looked around one last time, sighed then left the room. I waited until I could hear him washing off his face in the bathroom and finally climbed down from the rafters above the door. He gave up looking for me after that and I could continue to work on re-coding Metal Sonic in silence.
I continued to work late into the night again as my friends told stories and sang songs around the fire. Knuckles had left the door open to the workshop so I could hear all of it from where I was working. I just finished re-coding Metal and rebooted him to get the code working. I set up the laptop I was borrowing to display what Metal Sonic was seeing, it looked like his original optics are were pretty damaged but still working and with the assistance of the motion sensor he at least could see something if it was moving. His eyes flickered on and looked at me. I could see the pixelated, blurry and incomplete image myself in the screen of the laptop. He didn’t seem to recognize me as he chimed ‘P0-L0’ a couple of times. I smiled and leaned in closer so he could get a better look at my face.
“Good Morning, Metal! It’s me! My name is Cherry Bomb!”
