something that is very interesting rereading early MTMTE is that the comic is actually very much written with the assumption a ton of its readership are specifically pre-existing IDW comics readers, which can sometimes be difficult to remember because of the fact that a lot of people wound up coming onboard to MTMTE from outside the fandom in the end and now it has a reputation as an entry point as a result. this manifests in a couple ways throughout the first couple major arcs. one obvious one is that the Overlord stuff functionally makes it a sequel of sorts to Last Stand of the Wreckers, at a time no direct sequel was planned. but my favourite is that there's a kind of narrative trick the comic pulls with the leadup to the payoff Remain in Light gives us for Magnus.
the Magnus we get in early MTMTE is not the Magnus we get in earlier IDW comics. he's very exaggerated; where phase one Magnus is a by-the-books stickler for not so much as bending rules and someone we see struggling to maintain that sense of moral uprightness in the face of the war and the people around him being far less dedicated to staying on the straight and narrow like him, it's completely turned up to eleven in early MTMTE. phase one Magnus would not be doing endless doorframe audits, or throwing people in the literal brig for crooked badges. but this doesn't necessarily register as a change in character so much as a change in genre. MTMTE is also a dramedy with heavy emphasis on the comedy side of that in a way no other IDW comic is, and the shift in Magnus' characterisation therefore feels like 'well in THIS genre, that's what that archetype is like', rather than a diagetic shift in character. even if you come to MTMTE straight off those prior comics, it is very much a 'roll with the genre shift' thing rather than a 'hm. Magnus is acting… weird' thing. you let it go.
there are a couple indications this might not be the case early on. Rodimus especially seems to be under the impression that Magnus is acting uptight even for him, with his insistence on waving it off like 'he needs to relax, Swerve can you get him to chill on Hedonia because my guy is REAL stressed' and the like. (this makes sense- Rodimus is the person on the ship who has actually been directly interacting with Magnus regularly pre-MTMTE.) but it's not super obvious and not heavily emphasised.
which makes the eventual post-Overlord and RiL reveal, which is that Magnus has in fact been acting weird because he's having a breakdown that has largely gone unremarked upon by his shipmates, really really good. Magnus has not been doing doorframe audits because he's the comically uptight second in command acting as straight man for genre purposes; Magnus has been sending Rodimus a million memos a day and losing his shit over nothing because as someone whose entire identity as 'Magnus' is rooted in a wartime role he escaped into, he's been having an existential crisis now the war is over and he has no purpose and doesn't know what to do because he never expected to have to play that part in peacetime. the entire time the genre shift was somewhat obfuscating the fact this characterisation was a thing that is in-universe relevant, which also then reflects back on the fact Rodimus is like. hm. probably should have noticed that, now I feel like an asshole for not realising. (the scene where he and Rung discuss those unread memos, post-Overlord.)
it's a small thing, but it's a really effective misdirect for the payoff Magnus gets in RiL that reads a hell of a lot more clearly on reread and rewards that chance to revisit the early issues with that knowledge. of course that wasn't just a gag, of course he's actually slowly losing his shit slightly, he cannot go five seconds without making it clear he is Stressed As Hell. but until you get to that actual reveal, there's just enough room for the comic to let a reader assume it's, you know, we're in a comedy now, we need a hilarious straight man, and Magnus is it. it's great! all the stuff MTMTE pulls to simultaneously obfuscate the Magnus/Minimus reveal while also making it feel completely reasonable on reread is great. really good use of reader bias there.

Can we talk about Autistic Tucker? We always talk about Autistic Simmons, Autistic Caboose, etc, but never Tucker and I want to talk about Autistic Tucker.
One of the ways that Autistic masking can present is by becoming a jokester or a "class clown" type. I think that Tucker learned early in his life that he could make friends- or at least make other people laugh -with his bawdy jokes and his catchphrase (one could even call it echolalia), but as much as he talks about sex, it seems like he doesn't seem to actually have that much experience with it. He built up a persona of being hypersexual and he probably has a lot of sexual feelings, but he doesn't seem to have a lot of comfort when it comes to sex, especially when it's with a partner that's more experienced or more confident than he is (like Kai).
It's also worth mentioning that it's significantly harder for Black people to get diagnosed with Autism than white people and even though RVB is technically set in the future, it's also set in the early 2000s where there was a lot less Autism visibility in general, let alone in more marginalized populations.
We see the kinds of relationships that Tucker has with Church and with Wash, how they are similar and how they are different (whether you ship them or don't). As antagonistic as Church and Tucker are towards each other, Tucker consider Church to be his best friend and he's comfortable with how they treat each other- not necessarily comfortable in the sense that he likes it, but comfortable in the sense that it's what he's used to. With Wash, things are, in a way, more antagonistic because Wash isn't charmed by his jokes and laid back exterior until he softens a little bit. They butt heads more seriously than he did with Church, but they also get to have a bit more of a deeper and vulnerable relationship because of how Wash lowers his own walls on Chorus. When Tucker and Church "make up" on Chorus, Carolina comments on how there was no apology or anything like that, and both of them just say that that's how guys are, but I think they both just wanted to get back to the relationship they had and that relationship didn't require any kind of emotional vulnerability. The closest Tucker gets to showing emotional vulnerable wrt to Church is when he's arguing with Wash and says "I wanted to be with my best friend and now all I have is you," but he never tells Church directly that he is his best friend or how much he means to him because that's not the kind of relationship they have and (speaking from my own experience as an Autistic person) that's a really hard subject to broach when you don't have the framework for it.
This got off the rails a bit, but I'm firmly planting the rainbow infinity flag on Tucker and I have a lot of feelings about it.

When do you think Viserys stopped giving Aegon II attention and why? Because in episode 2 it's clear Viserys is giving that little boy attention but then he neglected Aegon and the other children...
i think it was really the hunt that made viserys decide to start distancing himself from his kids with alicent. but its not just one thing, its a culmination
viserys doesnt often make his own decisions, but when he does he Sticks By Them. rhaenyra being his heir was one of the few decisions hes made. i do not think viserys likes being questioned, it makes him start to doubt himself. he sees how, now that he has a son-that hes showing attention and favor too, his lords are expecting him to disinherit rhaenyra and name aegon his heir. theres nothing, necessarily, malicious in this, theyre just expecting him to follow tradition. but to viserys, self conscious and low self esteem, this feels like a challenge.
theres, of course, his crisis of faith. when aemma died, when viserys named rhaenyra his heir. he did not expect or want to get remarried. rhaenyra Was going to be his only child. hes stopped believing in his dream. but then he does remarry, does have a son, and those inklings of doubt start to come in. if this was what he was supposed to do, if rhaenyra was supposed to be his heir, why is it all so *hard*? why does everything feel like a fight. what if he was *wrong*?
when they tell viserys that the white hart has been spotted, otto says he is not one for signs and portents… but we know viserys Certainly Is. losing the white hart, especially after viserys night of heavy drinking and crisis of faith. would be a pretty clear sign to him that aegon is not his prophecy baby hes been obsessed with creating. i think this might be the moment viserys gives up on his dream (again)
AND rhaenyra directly telling him she feels like hes trying to replace her. that now he has the ‘son hes always wanted’ she feels like he doesnt need or want her anymore. and is just going to ship her off to the highest bidder. this guilt, (especially towards his living shrine to aemma) (combined with everything else that happened during the hunt) is of course going to make viserys start to distance himself from his other kids. to really start to treat them like spares.
i think theres maybe also a factor of, viserys has chronic baby fever, but *baby* fever. he likes his kids when theyre little and cute and dont know anything so he can just carry them around and show them off like fun little party tricks. once they start to grow up and assert themselves as a person and not just an accessory, viserys starts to loose interest. the hunt was to celebrate aegons second birthday… and if i know anything about two year olds :/

what makes sam and jackie compelling/interesting as a ship to u? /gen :O (not related to anything ive been meaning to send u this ask for a while and only just got round to it lol)
i think a big part of it is that the way jackie talks about sam makes them a lot more interesting as a character?
because objectively, sam sucks! as we see them about 90% of the time, they’re incredibly self serving and negligent. and that’s putting it in as simple terms as possible.
but we get these small implications as time goes on that there’s something beyond that! which is most notable in the interaction they have with dana in episode 83 (another thing i could talk about for a million years (i could also go on a whole other tangent about how them showing their face is another really huge example of this but that’s off topic rn)). but none of them are necessarily set in stone, outright saying who they are. like MAYBE sam isn’t completely horrible, but who can really be sure?
but then Jackie says this in it devours,
Tumblr media
sam is nice! really nice, actually! outside of the specific context of them being the sheriff and instead them,,, fundamentally as a person. and it isn’t like jackie is this one off character whose judgment we can’t trust. we spend an entire book getting to know her! and i feel like jackie is reliable in this aspect, especially post novel 1. this is the first and really like,, ONLY time we get info on sam from somebody who actually knows them personally. and interestingly enough, the next time we get insight on this aspect of their character, it can be linked back to jackie. they only decide to stand up against the university of what it is once they threaten josh, who is jackie’s half brother. and it is IMMEDIATE they are,, FRONT and fucking center in that movement. like their relationship is so interesting because jackie saying something as simple as that shakes up everything we know about this character.
and this all makes it very interesting to explore just,, what makes sam so fucking horrible outside of that? like what is it that drives them to be that way. and there are so many possible answers to that question and i have my own extensive thoughts on that but again,, off topic.
i love it all so much because it plays into the major themes of perspective that wtnv has? which i think is my favorite thing about the podcast. cecil has his own perception of sam, so does dana, so does jackie. and none of those perceptions are necessarily false, because they’re based on those people’s individual experiences.
Tumblr media
also i enjoy the way their relationship is foreshadowed in the novel because i think that with the way she describes it, sam is like the LAST character you’d expect her to end up with lmao.
but yeah TLDR; i find them compelling because sam is absolutely awful and jackie is not, but she describes them as a really nice person anyways ^-^

thoughts on Ginny and Harry as a couple?
There are a lot of people who find their romance in HBP forced. I don't think it's forced so much as underwritten, and the books don't get the chemistry quite right (though the movies certainly don't, either). There's potential, but they just don't get enough actual scenes of substance (besides Harry thinking she's pretty or feeling jealous of Dean) for a lot of readers to buy that they're not only in love, but deeply enough in love to break up, get back together, and wind up married.
That's not to say I don't see the appeal. There's a very cool scene in Book 5 where Harry's doing a woe-is-me-Chosen-One act, and Ginny effortlessly puts him in his place about it by reminding him that she was possessed by Voldemort at eleven, which is a rare glimpse into her character and also a great synecdoche for their relationship — Ginny is a grounding presence who, like Ron and Hermione, isn't going to be awed by his past adventures because she knew him before they happened. In that respect, Ginny's probably one of the few women Harry could feasibly wind up with, because he only ever seems comfortable around people (let alone girls) who can see past the Chosen-One schtick and treat him like a normo (see: Ron, Hermione, the Weasleys, Luna, Hagrid). True to type, he doesn't get interested in Ginny at all until she's ditched her celebrity crush and ceased to view him as an idol, because in his heart of hearts, Harry wants to be a normal boy, and it's stressed over and over that part of what he likes about his relationship with Ginny is how normal it feels. He kind of has a horribly supercharged version the celebrity dating problem: after the Battle of Hogwarts, anyone he meets is going to know him first as Harry Potter, Chosen One, Boy Who Lived, and Actually Fucking Resurrected Messiah of the Wizarding World, which is... I mean, it's possible that there are witches out there who could get over that, but Harry's not an extroverted guy, and I'm not sure how he'd go about finding them. Ginny's the one who's been there since the beginning, doesn't need anything about him or his past explained to her, and actually likes him for who he is.
When you look at it that way, it's not surprising he married his high school girlfriend. She's one of the few people still alive who doesn't see him as a demigod.
#in general I was never one to ship harry with anybody#what I wanted for him was a long quiet life and plenty of therapy#maybe some dogs. i think harry needs dogs and deserves them#The other obvious solution ftr — though not one I think Harry would take — is for him to marry a muggle#though again. you'd run into the problem of how you explain All That#which harry doesn't like to talk about and probably would want to talk about even less as an adult#plus also: harry loves magic. like he loves it loves it#the muggle world for harry is permanently connected with the dursleys and it would take years to break that association#which I just don't think he's going to invest#Harry post-BOH is moving to Hogsmeade or wizarding London or some other magical neighborhood and staying there forever#by the way this post is not anti Harry and Ginny! no hate on the ship I've seen versions of it that are very cute#but I just think their love story needed Sauce#there are also some really interesting posts I've found in Deep Fandom crackship blogs about h/g as Harry's sublimated desire for Ron#now I don't necessarily buy that reading. I don't think Harry is in love with Ron in the original text#I do think he LOVES ron and projects that love onto the Weasleys very quickly ginny included#and I think Ron is his soulmate platonic or otherwise in every universe#so marrying Ginny has like. Implications. vis-a-vis Harry's status as a Weasley and adoptive brother[in law] of Ron#like it's a full-circle moment where he becomes officially legally a member of Ron's family#which I do believe JKR had in mind. even though that basically means ginny's wedding becomes kinda... actually... about her brother...#it's weird basically. my final verdict is I wish H/G had been written by an author who was more interested in Ginny for Ginny's sake.#greenteacup asks

What's with Atsushi attracting tsunderes
That moment from confrontation with Fukuchi where Atsu is helping Ryuu stand up, just a moment later Ryuu remembers that "they're supposed to be enemies" and recoils with his usual "Don't touch me!!! Gross!". And then forgets about it again.
With Lucy it was tamer. While Ryuu was busy being an edgelord lawnmower, Atsushi and her had a moment of genuine connection.
But just like him, the initial response was hostility with the assumption that Atsushi doesn't know hardship. While in truth he stepped out of hell very recently.

(context for watcher/listener!sausage can be found in the “videos” tag on my blog if you want it, but this ficlet can be read without said context)
- - -
“Y’know, of all the Hermits I was expecting to be pulling me into a dark corner tonight, I did not expect you to be first, Grian! I love the initiative!”
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that,” Grian says in a voice near a hiss. He’s got Sausage by the wrist, leading him into a small area of the upper floor of the tavern in Sanctaury that does look like it was built for the exact purpose Sausage is implying. Grian decides to ignore that as well.
“What are you doing here?” Grian’s straight to the point. He always has to be, with these Things, if he doesn’t want to get trapped in a loop of slant rhyming pleasantries.
“What do you mean?” Sausage asks, shaking his wrist out of Grian’s tight grip and leaning comfortably against the wall. “This is where I live. It’s my home. If anything, I should be asking you mysterious strangers what you’re doing here, but I’m sure you’ve heard that question enough for one day.”
“You know exactly what I mean.” Grian crosses his arms and tries his best not to look petulant, but he sure feels like it. “I thought They’d given up on trying to snatch me back, so why would They send you of all people? What’s your game?”
Sausage laughs, honest to god laughs, like he can’t believe Grian’s even asking him such a question. Grian thinks it’s a reasonable question, in this scenario, but what he thinks and what’s reasonable rarely seems to matter with these things.
“They didn’t send me,” Sausage looks him up and down in that way that makes Grian have to physically stop himself from curling inwards. This is why he never talks to Them. “Nobody sends me anywhere, they don’t tell me what to do and I like it that way! I just do my own thing. Isn’t that what you’re doing?”
“No you’re not! You’re not- you can’t be! That’s not how this works!” Grian begins to notice that he’s no longer whisper-shouting and starting to just-normal-shout and takes a deep breath, trying not to draw the attention of his friends enjoying themselves on the floor below. And, realistically, in the other dark corners Sausage seems to have built into this place.
“That’s exactly how this works. You didn’t think you were the only person who’d left, did you?”
Grian opens his mouth, closes it, and thinks. In hindsight… yeah, he had kind of assumed he’d been the only person who’d left. Not for lack of trying, probably- but They’d tried for so long to get him back, kept him closely surveilled even when They’d accepted he was gone- surely some people had caved to that pressure eventually. When there was no sign They’d ever let up, ever let you go… he could understand eventually letting it overtake you.
“Did- did you leave, too?” Grian doesn’t remember the last time he saw Sausage’s face. He didn’t know him back then, of course. He probably would’ve connected the man with the person Pearl so often spoke about sooner. But he knows it’s been a long time, maybe even longer than the last time Grian had gone There. He doesn’t think Sausage had been There, that day. This might explain why.
“Eh, not quite?”
“What-“ Grian flails, both mentally and with his arms a bit. “What do you mean not quite?”
“Exactly what I said! I was never- it’s complicated, y’know?”
“Explain. Now.”
“Well, uh,” Sausage seems to flounder for the first time since this conversation started, which Grian is choosing to take as a victory. “Look, I wasn’t- they didn’t pick me. For this, or for anything, ever. Sometimes things just happen and you get yourself into a place you shouldn’t have and then… they can’t get rid of me, I can’t get rid of them, it is what it is.”
Grian stares at him for a long moment. Really stares at him, in the same way Sausage had looked him over earlier, in the same way that makes you feel like you’re under a microscope. Judging by the sudden nerves in his eyes, Grian can assume he feels it too. Grian remembers his face. That had been the first thing he’d noticed, when the Hermits had arrived. It had been a long time since they’d seen each other, but Grian knew his face. And now that Grian was studying him, really trying to remember… he’s not sure he quite likes what memories he’s dredging up.
“What are you?”
“Grian!” Sausage’s voice drips with mock offense as he puts his hand up to partially cover his mouth. “We only just met, do you think that’s polite?”
“Answer the question,” Grian sighs. How Pearl deals with this man on the regular, he doesn’t know.
“Well, if you insist.” Sausage sighs, somehow even more exaggerated than his previous movements. “It’s just… if you’ll believe it, it’s somehow even harder to answer the first question.”
“It shouldn’t be,” Grian says. “They’re two very different People, you know.”
“But they’re the same species, when it all comes down to it. Like, you might be very different than a chicken, but you’re both birds in the long run.”
Grian pauses, fanning his wings out a bit behind him as he considers. “I don’t think that metaphor’s quite landing the way you want it to.”
“No, me neither. Anyways, let me continue.
When they don’t pick you, things go a little differently! You don’t get sorted onto one side or the other since, well, you’re not really supposed to be there? So I’m… whatever I want to be, really. I think I’m feeling like more of a Listener, today, but we’ll see how the mood shifts.”
Grian flinches at the Name, on instinct. He doesn’t know how to feel about that, so he files it away to be dealt with at a later date. As for the rest of what Sausage said-
“What?”
“You heard me.” Sausage shrugs. He’s so nonchalant, Grian thinks he might strangle him, if not for the worry that that’s exactly what he wants out of this, somehow.
“Did I? Did I hear you?” Grian wants to pace, but that requires leaving the security of the corner, so he forces his feet to root themselves to the floor. “I thought- I thought you had to- if you wanted to change sides, I thought you had to-“
Grian closes one eye and takes his thumb to it, twisting the finger into his eyelid. The gesture seems to get the point across.
“Well, that’s the funny thing about this, actually.” From the way he’s been talking, Grian assumed Sausage thought this whole thing was funny. He restrains himself from saying that out loud if only so Sausage will finish his explanation.
Sausage reaches up to his left eye, pulls his eye lid back a bit, and unceremoniously pops out his prosthetic eye.
“All these processes and rituals actually have a lot of loopholes.”
Grian doesn’t know what face he’s making, but it’s enough to make Sausage giggle while he pops the eye back in. Because of course he does. Because this how his day is going, apparently. Walk through a weird portal in his basement and wake up in a world filled with his friends who don’t recognize him and also a guy he only ever saw There, who he was never supposed to see again. Sure. Of course he’s laughing about it. Grian thinks if he was a slightly different person, he’d be laughing too. It is, undeniably, absurd.
“Well, I think we’re done here then!” Grian would probably object if he weren’t so shocked about the loopholes. As it is, he just stands there a bit stupidly.
Sausage turns away to return to the party before turn around again for just a moment, reaching over, and ruffling Grian’s hair. That shocks him enough to shake him out of his stupor and swat Sausage’s hand away, though not before his hair is suitably messed up.
“What was that for?!”
Sausage smiles as he reaches up to rough up his own hair as well. “I assumed you didn’t want your friends asking questions about why you were dragging me into a dark corner, you know?” Sausage even goes far enough to pull his shirt a bit out of where it’s tucked into his pants, because of course he does. Grian tries not to cringe, but Sausage is right about this one thing. It is the easiest way to dodge any questions about where he’d gone off to- at the expense of the many knowing looks and teasing remarks he’ll be getting from the other Hermits instead.
“Have a good night, Grian!” Sausage calls over his shoulder as he turns to leave for real this time. “And remember, drinks are on me for all you guests tonight! You look like you need it.”

DTIYS Time WOOO!!!!
I've been wanting to do one of these for a while and the time has come where I finally made one! I don't really have any super specific occasion to be making this for, but January is very sentimental for me since it was the month I first joined the Ninjago fandom, and I find it very fitting that I made a dtiys with the very first Ninjago Au I created on here
There's no deadline or prizes for this, it's all for fun. Don't be afraid to play around with stuff like the colors or backgrounds, or even change up the poses a bit, just as long as you have Bad Ending Cole and Bad Endings Jay in there. The only rule is that you have to have fun!
Ok but for the actual "rules", please make sure to tag me as well as using the #salinedtiys so I can see it! I will reblog any entries that I see, so yeah make sure I'm able to see them :)
Now just to make sure this post isn't too long, I'm gonna leave my sappy message under a cut, so if you don't care to see me ramble you don't have to.
So I first joined this fandom at the end of Janurary of 2019. I made a couple of posts about Ninjago and didn't think much of it, but then so many people started to enjoy the things I made and they made me feel like the things I made were worth something. I didn't feel as self conscious about myself because hey, these people on the internet enjoy the things I make so I think that makes me pretty cool.
This fandom has been the absolute best fandom I've ever been a part of. There's so many nice and cool people here who just make me feel happy and welcomed. And even when I took a break from Ninjago, when I came back it was still just about as welcoming to me as when I left.
And it really is fitting that I drew BE!Jay and BE!Cole for this dtiys (with thanks to the poll I created) because I guess if this dtiys is celebrating anything, it would be my progress as a creator. As an artist and a writer, and as someone who just genuinely likes making stuff. Because when you look back, some of the earliest art I posted was with Jay and Cole because bruiseshipping was (and still is) my favorite ship in this fandom. And this silly little au where all the ninja are evil was the first au I made and it's still one I continue to make content for because I enjoy it and other people enjoy seeing it.
So yeah like I said, this message was gonna get sappy. But I really just want to thank the Ninjago fandom for being so great and all the people who come and look at my art and my silly little aus because you guys bring a lot more joy in my life, and I genuinely feel like my life would suck a lot more if I didn't have you guys.
🧡🧡🧡
