I'm curious, what would your ideal FE be?

And do you have any particular FE concepts in mind?

Hmmm, I've been thinking this over since you sent it to me, and it's hard to say because there's a lot of things I like that I dunno if they'd actually work together, if that makes sense? Mostly I just have a lot of thoughts about things I'd like to see in a FE game, which I can write out. Under the cut bc, length (it is Very Long, I'm so sorry). Also fair warning that I'm kind of rambling with some direction and organization, but this was all very train-of-thought while I wrote.

Like, ideally, my first thing would to be to get rid of all gender-locked classes. They're absurd. Fates got the idea right by getting rid of them, honestly (although I think women should be allowed to be butlers and men maids, as a treat, even though I know those two classes were literally the same class w/ different aesthetics). I don't have any specific wants for which classes should appear, be added, or be dropped really, just so long as the classes make sense for the overall story (Fates once more takes the prize for having the most narratively-appropriate and creative classes). I would like to see some really weird classes though, like the wolf riders in Engage are Very Cool bc wolves, and I want more weird stuff like that. Give me people riding skeleton animals, or giant bugs, as well as bears and moose and all manner of creatures that actually exist. I mean heck, historically camels and elephants were used as mounts, and we've yet to see either in FE. I also want more diversity and creativity in the infantry classes. Again, whatever fits the aesthetic and themes of the story, but I feel like we only get a handful of really weird infantry classes every now and then if we're lucky. Mounting/dismounting should be a permanent mechanic as well, there's nothing more satisfying that sticking a flier in archer range and then having them get off their flying beast.

Also weapon durability should stay gone, I hate weapon durability so much. Although I do like how combat arts and spells worked in Echoes and Three Houses, but like, the mechanics need to be tweaked. The easiest solution would be to simply have like, an attack power meter or something similar that characters could draw on to use combat arts and spells. Also, rather than locking combat arts to specific weapons a la Echoes, have is so that each character either has unique combat arts (and spells), or that they can learn combat arts and spells from specific weapons that they've "mastered" by using a certain number of times in combat, which they can then carry-over to a different weapon.

I also liked how 3H allowed any class to use any weapon, but I think this also needs to extend to magic, so that magic can be used with any class as well. This would open up a lot of opportunity for the player to really experiment mixing and matching classes, weapons, and magic with different units, which I think would be a lot of fun to play (based on how much fun I had with similar mechanics in 3H), and offer a lot of replayability for the sheer madness of trying new things with new characters. This will also do away with a lot of "I love this character, but their stats suck and they're nigh unusable" that sometimes occurs, since the player could theoretically just try out different combinations until they got something that worked (RIP to all the people who said Ignatz wasn't a good unit, I ran him through the thief/assassin line and gave him some magic, and he was a crit machine by the time I landed him in mortal savant, I want more madness like that honestly).

Obviously, having an AP pool would also require mechanics that replenish the pool during battle, which could be any variation or combination of skills, specific actions taken on the map (resting on a specific tile, attacking normally, etc.), or even adding in a special staff. Speaking of, staff durability has to go too, I'm so tired of needing to buy staffs. Also, I know a lot of magic in FE is either "a single spell stored in a tome" (most games) or "spell that character can personally gain access to" (i.e. Echoes, 3H), and like, cool beans, but I think, ideally, I'd want like, actual grimoires or other sorts of magical foci (crystal balls, wands, scepters, magic cards, the possibilities are literally endless). Either the magic weapon allows units more powerful magic attacks (if units had magic specific to them), or "taught" the unit specific types of magic (i.e. a Fire Grimoire might teach a unit fire, elfire, and bolganone, or something along those lines). Also, I want there to be a magic triangle the same way weapons get a triangle, although how that should be arranged (for both) would vary based on what types of weapons and magic the game actually contained.

Aside from what I'd like to see out of classes and battle mechanics, I don't have too many other things to wish for. I really am one of those rare "actually I really do play the game for the mechanics" FE fans. I'd want an interesting, and consistently written, story, mostly. Engage actually hit the story notes perfectly in my opinion, all the characters were about equal in their characterization--even the women were as diverse and interesting as the men--unlike the rampant sexism in Echoes or the uneven characterization depth of 3H, or the unrealized potential due to :too many characters" in Fates; Awakening was fine too, but Engage really polishes the support-based characterization to a shine. So I'd want more of that, like, even if a character is a side character, they should have interesting supports that build their characterization, and I want every character to be about equal in their writing (I know protags obviously get more attention, and that's fine).

Generally I feel like the model for supports is fine, although I think it'd be interesting to have group supports of 3+ characters to contrast the one-on-one of the current support model, just to really add more depth to the characters outside of what they get from the story. Also, while I liked that there was a lot more platonic supports in Engage, I really do miss seeing different paired endings, so I'd honestly bring back S-ranks between non-protag characters, but like, maybe not too many, if that makes sense? Awakening and Fates' supports suffered a bit from the "every man and woman can S-rank every other unit of the opposite gender bc of the child units", whereas I feel that limiting character supports per character really helps to focus the writing in a stronger way (Echoes and Engage did this the best, although I will give kudos to 3H for its unique take on supports, although the roulette of paired endings was...not well-implemented at all). But I also want there to still be a lot of platonic supports, I dunno. Mostly I just want well-written and interesting supports.

Supports aside, the only thing I'd want from the main story--aside from "well-written, consistently written", would be to Not Do whatever the writers were trying to do in 3H. It's my unpopular opinion, but (for as much as I love the characters and gameplay) the story writing just isn't that good or consistent in 3H. Fates, even with it's shitty localization, is more consistently written, and more strongly written, than 3H. FE has never actually been about war a critique of war (go to MGS or like, Triangle Strategy for that). FE flourishes narratively when it's a little goofy, and completely earnest, and focused on a few key narrative themes. I dunno what I'd want to see specifically for those themes, because I enjoy all sorts of stories, but yeah...(although to be fair, FE would probably fail as a cosmic horror story--or as any type of true horror--so I wouldn't want that I suppose, despite loving cosmic horror). Also, no split-timelines, multiple routes, etc. Just one storyline. I don't hate how Fates and 3H use multiple storylines, but...I prefer a singular story arc.

The music has been really good for basically every game, so I'd be fine with the current composers being allowed to do whatever they please. Now the art direction...I have a lot of conflicting thoughts because, on one hand, I know why a lot of the things I have personal beef with exist from a production standpoint (almost everyone has one of like, four body model types in Engage and it drives me insane bc there is NO body type diversity, but also for the modelers, it was probably more cost-effective to just have a handful of models for each class to swap out character heads and palettes for class changes, but I still hate the lack of body diversity, but I also understand why it would be easier, but...and so on).

That said, if we are talking what my absolute ideal would be, I just, really, really want diverse character designs. I want many different body shapes and sizes, I want lots of different skin tones (and please enough with the nigh grey-skinned characters), I want people to have actual noses and more than one or two nose shapes, I want crooked teeth and wrinkles and other "allegedly unflattering" physical appearances for characters who aren't evil, and just, I want the character design to really push beyond the whole "aesthetically pleasing based on the current sense of what is considered aesthetically pleasing" that I've seen in...too many media. Also enough with making all villains "ugly" (or the weird "big tiddy evil lady" trope, we've moved beyond demonizing women by making them sexy femme fatales), like, as much as I love the cartoonishly evil villains, sometimes the caricatures are just, tiring and uninspired. Honestly, Heroes is pulling more weight in the "interesting villain designs" department (as well as Kozaki just pulling all the weight in trying to have more diverse designs for women for Heroes), and just, we need more of that in the mainline games.

Also, for as far as like, animations and cutscenes and stuff, I feel like Engage made a lot of progress with it's pre-rendered cutscenes (they're back to being on par with the animations for Awakening and Fates, which had the best pre-rendered animated cutscenes of the games I've been using as examples, in my opinion), but the in-game cutscenes reverted back to the characters standing around in a circle talking a la 3H. We'd never get something like Sumia punching Chrom on the screen in either 3H or Engage, and that's a real shame bc the 3D models do look a lot more complex and pretty than the little polygon people of Awakening, Fates, or Echoes, and yet the in-game cutscenes don't do anything with them. Again, I get that from a production standpoint, having a handful of stock animations for body language and then setting the characters in a circle in a skybox to talk is easier and less-intensive cost-wise, but damn does it really suck the life out of the story at that moment. If it wasn't for the stellar voice acting, then scenes would really fall flat I think. So yeah, more character design diversity all around, better utilization of 3D assets.

And that's...where I think I'm gonna call this a post. I don't have any particular concepts for a hypothetical FE game, partly bc any time I think, "I wish this narrative device or type of story existed" I just end up taking it and turning it into one of my many personal original project ideas instead. Which is...probably why I don't have a lot of AU ideas ever, bc part of me figures if I'm gonna change that much from canon, I might as well just make up my own thing entirely and be bound by no rules except my own. But since I can't see myself getting into game coding and trying to make my own game anytime soon, I can at least think about the types of things I'd like to see in a FE game, though they may never come to be.

Ok so my new wip,

Told through the perspective of Desmond, who is a rich kid (ex rich kid Ig) sent to live at a boarding school by the rest of his family with only $33.46 to his name after his parents were arrested for money laundering. His personality is like if you combined Richie Rich with Ferris Bueller, and every other himbo-without-the-muscles character you can think of. He seems self absorbed until you get to know him and realize he just doesn't understand social cues because he never had much interaction with peers. A⃪l⃪s⃪o⃪ b⃪c h⃪e⃪'s⃪ n⃪e⃪u⃪r⃪o⃪d⃪i⃪v⃪e⃪r⃪g⃪e⃪n⃪t⃪.

I will give this adorkable boi more plot in the story, I promise, but for now I'm screwing around with the idea and ways it could go. I will be giving him friends and potentially a crush (bc I'm a hopeless romantic like that, fite me), I'm thinking to give him specifically 3 significant ppl. This idea came to me in a dream where I was running around a mall with him and 2 other ppl, and we were in a poly quadrouple apparently. I mean, I still sat with my crush in the backseat of a car in the dream but ok. So I might even end up giving him boyfriends/girlfriends/theyfriends or some mixture of any of the aforementioned scenarios.

Other info is that his taste is gaudy and just awful. I mean he loves this leopard print hat that he wears everywhere, extremely loud designs on every inch of his clothes, and his favorite musical artists are all bubble pop stars.

He is cringe, he is funny, he is loveable, and he is consuming my conscious mind. If ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE likes this and has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Hanami and Ilia VS Yinu, Peni, (Lili, Asa?), Catherine (she might be too old/sick), Eri, Ada, Eloni, Brute?

Jogo VS Tatiana, Miguel, DJ Sub?, Ilia, Noir, Ham (Noir and Ham might be with Dragon)

Dragon VS DDMC and Sayu Crew, (Margo and Tila?), Zimelu?

Kale and Vandelay Corps VS B2J, Hobie, Ex-Jay, Chai and friends? (Or just Chai), Haym, Rin?

Liv and Moria VS Jonathan, Peter B, Purl? (Also more people needed here)

Mahito VS Kento, Yu, (Miles, Gwen, Ganke?), (Eve, Pav, and Gayatri?)

Suguru VS Satoru and Shoko

Oh I love these! So much! Gonna put this under a cut definitely because I'm combining this ask with the second ask you sent going into more detail!

[Also thank you for being patient as this was a LOT to answer but really fun to write!]

So first off, I think a lot of these fights, with how you sent them, are the like FINAL fights for each character. Because I do have a lot of ideas of like smaller battles between different characters, like Raz vs Hanami or Peni vs Mahito.

But these specific fights seem a lot more like they are the end of the character (either being bad or death, I don't know yet, but most likely talking shit through). So yeah, I'll do my best to give my opinions on them and how I would see them going down if they do go down!

-Vs. Hanami and Ilia:

[VS Hanami: this fight is more about reasoning with Hanami and Ilia. Hence people who have plant powers or are close with Ilia and Hanami are all here to try and reason with them instead of throwing hands]

I like the idea you are going with here! Ilia needs his friends to help him see reason and Hanami needs people with plant powers to help her see that the world still has hope for better humans.

At this point when the fight is happening, I don't know if someone was able to figure out a way to stop the eventual collapse of the world or not yet, but whether it happened or not, I can see the good guys convincing Hanami and Ilia that this can be fixed (either saying they know how to fix the world, or saying they can find a way together if they actually work together as humans, robots, and spirits, instead of against).

If you want to get pretty messed up here, I can see Catherine having been a bit older/weaker, but someone (probably Mahito) "fixed" that in her so she is able to fight. She's probably not as forgiving, at least not for Mahito, but she is following Yinu's lead here instead of leading Yinu (probably a smaller plot point that was addressed up to this point, because if Catherine got her strength back, even if in pain from the transformation, she would have absolutely gone back to protective mode over Yinu, and Peni now).

Lili was probably here first to try and fight Hanami alone, the Psychonauts are definitely the main people fighting against the spirits attacking humans, but he most likely was getting his ass kicked by Hanami and Ilia pretty good (as Hanami can outrank Lili in nature power and so a lot of his plants can get turned on him).

This is where Ilia's friends, as well as Yinu, Peni, and Catherine show up to try and stop Hanami and Ilia (most likely because of Asa wanting to stop them personally, as he still cares for Ilia even though at this point they are either broken up or on a break with all the bullshit going on).

Definitely these two are going to be the first to switch sides to be on the good side. If there is a known way to stop the collapse of the world, then Hanami becomes a great tool in reasoning with Jogo, Mahito, and Dagon. If there isn't a known way but there are concrete plans to try and find a way, then she will stand back and be on the neutral side, letting the rest of the spirits do as they will as she keeps an eye on the plans for saving the world.

Ilia is probably a bit more hesitant, but honestly got swept up in all the drama and thinking of a world where robots, spirits, and humans could live together in peace as long as there were only humans with powers. It's gonna take a long while for him and his friendships to become strong again, but he is willing to help out trying to find a way to save the world with Hanami and Asa.

-Vs. Jogo:

[VS Jogo: fire resistance. Miguel is here bc his suit can protect him from heat. Tatiana can use her time powers to stop Jogo while the others lay attacks. (Also I see Miguel’s strength on par with Toji)]

Love the idea that Miguel is on a similar level as Toji! I absolutely agree in strength they are close, but Toji is still probably stronger as well as much faster and smarter than Miguel (good thing he is probably dead lol, I am not having him just come out of no where and murder my babies! ...maybe lol)

I actually think just having Tatiana and Miguel vs Jogo would be enough for this fight. The others would either be too underclassed for this fight, be at a major disadvantage, or would be better off fighting another fight with a different opponent.

Those two together are honestly really strong and have a resistance to pretty much everything Jogo could throw at them. The only real problem would be trying to minimize the damage that Jogo would be able to do during the fight.

Which is where Tataiana's time powers would really come in handy, as she would do her best to try and get to Jogo as fast as possible and bring him somewhere else. Though we already know Jogo is extremely perceptive and was able to stop Naobito using his Projection Sorcery, so I honestly think Tatiana won't be fast enough to actually get Jogo out of the area (this fight is either happening in Vinyl City or Nueva York, not some random ass place like the rest of these fights could possibly occur).

So what if veils could be made, but they are now made with technology and not cursed energy? That would be a major thing that Miguel would bring to the fight, because there would absolutely be some people who are out of control with their powers and would need to be isolated from the masses in order to not hurt people while Nueva York did their best to calm the powered person down.

It would be a pretty long and drawn out battle I would think, with the power tech slowly draining Jogo of his immense amount of power until he would have to be forced to run away, as I am positive that Tatiana and Miguel would be one of the few characters willing to kill considering Jogo might have killed plenty of people before the veil went down, as well as absolutely killed people before the fight.

Either that, or maybe Hanami would enter the veil and talk to Jogo. Though this would only work if the solution to the collapsing world problem has been solved or is close to being solved. Hanami plus the realization that the world isn't going to die would be enough to calm Jogo and have him start to hear out the humans of the world.

Overall, Jogo would end up losing unless he got a good shot against either Miguel or the machine keeping the veil in place (which would be outside the veil but possibly with enough force could be destroyed or at the very least moved to weaken the veil enough to be broken). Because Tatiana is not one to easily be beaten by another fire elemental/controller.

Actually, you know what? It would be cool if Jogo was actually mopping the floor with Tatiana and Miguel, with those two just barely able to hold their own (they aren't getting hurt all that much, but are only on the defensive, can't attack properly, and are quickly running out of steam).

A long fight between them would have ended up in Jogo's win, and the death of two major figures in the world. But Matvey ends up showing up and puts Jogo in his place (the way Toji did to Dagon except that Jogo manages to escape).

Matvey isn't here to save his daughter, but to get revenge on the disaster curses for a fight that would have happened earlier in the series that I will end up talking about later on (not in this post).

Even if Matvey doesn't have any fire powers, his metal body gives him a resistance to fire, but also his overpowered time abilities make it nearly impossible for him to be hit by Jogo's (or anyone's really) power. So he would be the saving grace of the fight if Jogo was getting the upper hand in the fight.

This would absolutely not fix the relationship between Tatiana and Matvey, but it would allow them to talk for a moment before Matvey continues on to try and find Mahito and Suguru.

-Vs. Dagon:

[VS Dragon: the domain’s sure hit might not work if its attacks are to holographic mermaids. (If Ham is here, they could think about cooking the fish… and actually feasting on them. The 10 year timeskip strengthened her reality warping.)]

The thing about the DDMC is that they most likely don't have their holographic bodies anymore, or at the very least not at the time of this fight (if they had their holograms then Dagon and friends would make sure to attack when the mermaids are in their physical bodies like during an in person concert or something).

Actually, I really like that idea! Dagon attacking during a concert! This could be why Zimelu is here during this fight (as well as Ham and Noir) because they were all there to see the concert since they were either invited or had nothing better to do lol.

By this point in their lives, I am pretty sure the mermaids would have gained enough power and stuff through their biotech bodies that they gained their own natural magic abilities (what these are I don't know, but probably related to their holographic fighting abilities).

I'm still working on how domains work in this AU/Universe, but if Dagon does have their domain, then they would drag in as many people as possible to make fighting them as difficult as can be.

It will be kinda like the Satoru vs Jogo and Hanami fight, where Dagon will be using fans and ordinary people as fodder in order to complicate the fight for the DDMC, Zimelu, Noir, and Ham.

I think the Crew themselves wouldn't have been brought into the domain, mainly because they usually take care of the show from the backstage and so wouldn't have been in the sight of Dagon to be dragged into the domain.

That would mean that there is now a way to call for help to get someone inside the domain to help fight against Dagon. My bet would be to have Pav and Gaya come in as those two would be the closest people at this point.

They would be able to break in and honestly I love the idea that Sofa somehow gets their tech into the domain and keeps a connection going with it during the fight.

You know how Megumi weakened Dagon's domain with his own domain? I can see Sofa and the Crew in general doing the same thing with that tech. Pav is also helping in this regard but is more so using his powers to make sure people are safe and not easy to hit by Dagon. Gaya on the other hand is trying to use her voice to boost her friends while also trying to make it harder for Dagon to fight (more of a confusion than a full stop like Inumaki can do a bit).

The problem is, I can see Dagon just having too much energy, as well as a domain making everything easier for them, that this fight is going to drain the powers of everyone fighting them before a dent even gets put into Dagon's power.

Oooh! You know what would be cool! If one of the mermaids were able to learn how to make their own domain during this fight! Because though I am still figuring out how domains would work in this universe when dealing with people who don't have psychic powers, I can definitely see one of the mermaids having awoken psychic powers over the 10 year timeskip and now is able to open a domain thanks to the adrenaline rush AND Sofa being able to boost their power/stamina whatever is needed to open a domain.

So while I do see Dagon as having one of the best domains when it comes to experience and completeness, having been fighting a bit against Sofa's tech, probably Pav trying to open a domain as well, and now a 4th domain being thrown into the mix, the first 3 domains would collapse and the mermaid's domain is now the front runner!

(I think I am leaning towards Renho being the one who has psychic abilities, but Aoi could also be the one instead. Maybe the both of them end up with some psychic powers, but Renho is an actual psychic while Aoi only has mind powers)

Anyway, once Dagon lost the domain fight would be a turning point in the fight. Noir and Pav are making sure people are getting out of the domain through a hole/door provided by the mermaid.

Zimelu is protecting any people that can't get to the door with her barrier while also shooting at Dagon from the sidelines (I can also see her being the one who gave orders in the beginning of the fight because she and Noir are probably the best under pressure like this).

Ham is working with the mermaids in the fight against Dagon, kicking their ass now as one mermaid now has a surefire hit and the others are boosted up from Sofa and the rest of the Crew (and honestly I can see the combination of domains happening, something that is entirely new even to the curses. Where Sofa's tech and the mermaid's domain combine into one allowing for the Crew to affect the fight digitally and have a surefire hit just as much as the mermaid whose domain this is would have).

All this while Ham is being helpful but also got a boost in power because what is funnier than the tables turning on a strong opponent and now they are being handled like a toy! Like that shit is hilarious and only helping Ham beat the crap out of Dagon now.

Once all the people are out of the domain, you better believe the fight now gets even worse for Dagon as Noir, Pav, and Gaya are all back in the fight 100%.

The constant hits from the Crew and Club, the mind games being played by Pav and Gaya, and the support from Noir, Ham, and Zimelu would all be too much for Dagon to handle and they'd have their ass handed to them and lose a lot of their energy until they couldn't fight anymore and just barely hold themself up from the ground.

The only real problem now is what to do with Dagon, because NONE of the people here have either taken a life, or wants to take a life again. So they don't know what to do. It doesn't help that Dagon probably realizes this and starts to cry (1. to trick them, and 2. I just see Dagon as someone who is ready to cry, it's not weakness, but they are just stressed and want to release some of that stress).

The crying would absolutely get to everyone and they would tell Dagon to never do this again or else they will end them (an empty threat that Dagon could tell).

Once the mermaid and Sofa release their domains, I can see Dagon doing one last hit of a small wave/tsunami type attack to wash away everyone (possible cause a lot of structural damage to the concert venue, thankfully all civilians would have been evacuated at that point) and fly away from the scene.

So kinda a stalemate between the two sides with this one, but it took pretty much EVERYTHING from the "good guys" to actually get Dagon to a spot where they were beatable. So that is going to be something that is kept in mind for later.

(You know, I think I kinda wrote this as a first or middle battle, rather than a final battle. But this could very well be a final battle as well as first. Like it's Dagon's first real battle but also it's closer to the end so they don't really get a second battle).

Also, that is to say all of that happens if Dagon is in their evolved form. If they are just a little baby wormy, then instead of fighting they are just chilling in the crowd with some glow sticks and dancing to the tunes of the Mermaid Club /j

I doubt Dagon would be fighting properly in their worm form. At least now starting fights between world leaders like their evolved form will be. I think a smaller fight between Peni and Yinu would be what gets Dagon to transform earlier in the AU, but I'm not entirely sure yet.

-Vs. Kale:

[VS Kale: it would be humiliating to not only lose twice against the same opponent, but also by more guitars! (I also see Chai and co being able to get in Vandelay easily because of who they are)]

It would absolutely be humiliating for Kale to lose twice to the same opponents but also really fucking funny! Gonna add Ratchet from Robots to Kale's side and Rodney to Chai and friends' side!

Definitely the easiest, or at least the least threatening fight on this list because it is just a bunch of CEOs with more robotic tech than actual powers (though tech powers are starting to get recognized as true powers now in the world).

Honestly, this fight would play out more like OG HFR, NSR, and Robots combined. There's no super powerful entity making domains or destroying whole cities. Just a bunch of normal-ish people beating the shit out of each other.

Most likely what happens is that the rockers (including Rin, maybe Haym) are all visiting Hobie and Ex-Jay in the UK, and decide to go look visit Robot City. I have an OC band who I am still working on who would be living in Robot City because a few members are robots but every single one has robotics in them.

So Hobie and Ex-Jay take their friends to visit Robot City and there they all learn about how shit has gone down hill real fast thanks to Ratchet becoming a CEO and making a deal with Kale. This is where they all meet Rodney who is one of the few people who still believe in Bigweld coming back.

The rockers all agree to help out in fighting because it's not fair and also because of personal beef with these idiots at the top. Rodney wants to find Bigweld instead of fighting at first. I can see Rin and Haym being the ones to go with him (maybe Macaron and Ellie come too? I would find that funny lol).

As the rockers end up trying to figure out a way to get into Bigweld Industries (the security is very tight because Kale knows way too much how lax security can fuck things up), Rodney and friends do their best to find Bigweld.

It would be like a two part story where you are following the fight against returning bosses (Rekka, Mimosa, Zanzo and Roquefort) as well as new bosses (like security robots, sweepers, Tim, Gasket) from Robots. And then also following the mystery of where Bigweld is (maybe the story gets darker with hints of Bigweld being dead and dismantled, only for that to be a red herring).

The boss fights would be like upgraded/master difficulty fights compared to last time because 10 years have passed which led to a lot of hate marinating as well as plenty of upgrades being made to the bosses (like you cannot tell me Mimosa and Zanzo aren't gonna be the most petty bitches and hold grudges for a decade).

I also kinda like the idea that Gasket and Kliff are the ones pulling the strings behind everything. Gasket hates outmodes and Kliff is just a pretty vindictive person and thinks this is a good stepping stone for him to get back at NSR (especially since Kale is probably salty against NSR as well for being the inspiration for the Tech Revolution leading to his downfall).

Though honestly don't know how I truly feel about Kliff being behind this. I did want him connected to the RoboRevolution, but I think I wanted him to be on the good guy's side this time.

Kinda like he was the reason Kale went to Robot City and made a deal with Ratchet, but then he probably started to regret it or was treated bad because he did not have any tech in him. He was just a powerless and techless human.

Oh! Kliff would be the perfect display of a betrayal! At first he is with Kale and Ratchet! But then once he refused to be upgraded, and found out to have no powers, he becomes a target by both the tech side as well as the curse side of things!

This would lead Kliff to running and hiding where he might meet Rodney and from there Kliff is now trying to help Rodney in the fight against Kale and Ratchet.

Obviously the NSR cast would NOT trust him in this regard, but I can see Haym and Rin being the ones to actually listen to Rodney and are the reason those two go with Rodney and Kliff (as well as Cappy) to go find Bigweld while the rockers go and start making a path through the bosses to the CEOs.

So Kliff was kinda the reason the RoboRevolution happens in both regards. He's why the oppressive regime started to form, but also one of the major reasons it will get dismantled! (love me a man who flip flops on ideals and morals to best suite himself)

-Vs. Liv and Moira:

[VS Liv and Moria: tech bros fighting… yeah. That’s it. (Also Jonathan is still PISSED that Liv is still that wicked in her beliefs. So tagged up with his friends)]

You know who I'm gonna add into this mix? Soul Eater characters! Specifically Medusa is gonna be on the side of Liv and Moira! Crona will be fighting against their mother(s).

Jonathan and Peter are absolutely fighting in this fight. I can see Mercy/Angela also fighting because of Moira. Then it would be Crona and some of the other Soul Eater characters as well.

I don't know why Purl would be here. I can't really think of a reason other than that they would not like the work that Liv, Moira, and Medusa are up to. Like Purl does not have connections to really any of these characters...

OH! No I know! Ilma! She is one of the teachers at Jujutsu Tech for sword fighting and she's the reason why Crona was able to get away from Medusa enough to become friends with Maka, the rest of the SE gang, and probably some of the JJK characters!

Crona, Maki, and Maka being friends and also students under Ilma would be why Purl is here because I can see Purl and Ilma being friends thanks to Cyril!

Purl and probably Ilma are here to help protect their students as they stand up to Crona's mother.

Peter and Jonathan are here because they found out about Crona and how they have been the victim to horrible power experiments, and are extremely pissed off that Liv is still doing this shit (and is now being funded by governments wanting to know the secret to powers and genetics through any means necessary, even the cost of a life such as Crona's).

There is definitely no changing Medusa, Moira, or Olivia's minds when it comes to this fight. It is either beat them or lose. No way are they gonna give up what they worked decades to build up and are willing to die and kill for. There is no price for the advancement of science in these three's eyes.

Now this fight is also probably one of the hardest fights, not in the terms of pure power or strength that will go into it, but the mind games and skill that will be needed to fight these three.

They are all very smart, very agile, and have plenty of powers and tech on their side that most of the world would have never even seen at this point as it is all experimental and secret.

Also the fact that i think by this point, Liv would have worked with Moira and Medusa long enough that she was able to give herself some powers. And if that wasn't the case, her and Suguru are slightly buddy-buddy now and he would have given her some powers in exchange for allowing Mahito to practice his powers on some of their test subjects (an opportunity that Liv would have jumped on in a matter of mere seconds without a second thought).

Like that would be a major blow to hear from Liv for Jonathan, Peter B, and Ilma to hear. To find out that Suguru was working with these three doing horrible experiments against people's will just for the "betterment" of humanity.

This would be especially cool thing to be revealed in an earlier fight. It doesn't even have had to have been a fight. Maybe Jonathan found Liv and Moira, or Liv and Medusa, out on one of their missions for the curses and it was just a conversation.

It probably ended up being a slight fight, but the 2-on-1 vs Jonathan would not have ended in his favor at all (not with Medusa or Moira being the other person on Olivia's side).

And when Jonathan asked her why she is doing this, and how he will let the same people who beat her all those years ago know what she is doing, that is when she reveals to him that Suguru is one of the people behind all of this.

Everything happening now in the new world is because of Suguru meeting up with the curses and trolls and finding out about how the world is going to collapse if they don't do this. Olivia, Moira, Medusa, and Suguru all believe the end justifies the means, and that all of this pain and suffering is worth it to keep humanity alive and advancing.

This scene is probably one of the major starts of the Eriverse, which then goes through a bunch of fights and story development. With one of the ending fights being this one where Jonathan, Peter, Soul Eater kids, Purl, and Ilma take on the three scientists.

I still don't believe there is any way that those three are gonna change their minds at all. They are way too stuck in their ways and belief systems to change for the better. So while they probably don't die, I think the institutions will ban then from working with them and take away their funding once the word gets out what they were doing.

Like obviously the institutions were funding them and keeping this all a secret, but the moment it got out to the public the institutions pleaded ignorance and cut the ties with those three.

That's not gonna stop them, only slow them down, but for now they won't be all that much trouble (until we get to the next generation /j).

-Vs. Mahito:

[VS Mahito: If I am correct, Miles, Yu and Kento might all have fought with Mahito at one point. Kento especially has beef with him, and knows the tricks up his sleeve. Miles’ powers are not that offensive, so Gwen and Ganke are here as attackers/enhancers. Eve and Pav are here to combat Mahito’s realm. Gayatri is here to evacuate people because Mahito needs a sure supply of humans.]

Okay, so having a singular vs. Mahito fight is definitely not happening. This bad boi can't sit fucking still at all and will be fucking around with everyone and everything (you know that scene in Spongebob where Patrick touches everything in the jellyfish museum? Yea no, that's Mahito all the way lol).

You absolutely KNOW the final battle with him is going to be some hectic bullshit of multiple people trying to jump this goofball and Mahito just laughing all the while getting his ass kicked but no real damage coming his way.

I will say, one of the major people who will be fighting Mahito is absolutely Kento, Yu, and Junpei. Those three need their just desserts when it comes to beating the crap out of Mahito. And because of that, Yuji is also going to be here supporting his boi Junpei in the fight!

Honestly still figuring out what is gonna go on with Yuji, but there is still gonna be some kind of Sukuna adjacent thing going on which allows Yuji to be kinda immune to Mahito, which keeps the whole "You are my natural enemy but we are also the same" theme (Nobara would be a lot more important in this AU too, I just haven't gotten to her, as he special power to connect with people's souls like a psychic can connect with the mind is something absolutely needed in a lot of these fights with curses and trolls and vocaloids and stuff).

Anyway, the thing with Mahito's powers is that I don't know if they actually transfigure humans in the way they do in canon. For this AU I had it so that they can change of give and element to people. It's not like changing people into weapons or monsters. I am honestly still debating on that.

Actually! You know what? I think it will do both! Mahito can change people's element/give them an element, and if they die from the change and pain, they become tools for Mahito. If they don't die then they become human shields for him to use (like making two human turn into metal elementals to tank a hit from Yuji would absolutely be something Mahito is willing to do).

So yea! Gaya will absolutely be needed to evacuate as many people away from Mahito as humanly possibly, though he will absolutely still get a few to use unfortunately.

Eve is absolutely here as well, I can see her having become friends with Kento thanks to his relationship to Dodo and friendship with Pav and Remi. Pav, similarly, is here for Kento, Yu and Miles.

Definitely think the two need to work together against Mahito's domain because as much as Eve and Pav have made domains, they never had to fight for their domains to be active against another. So the two are using all their power to keep their domains open against Mahito if he opens it (which he absolutely will try, if Sukuna is not entirely here, which I am still debating on) as Mahito has much more experience fighting with domains than those two.

I don't really remember saying that Miles, Gwen, and Ganke (or at the very least just Miles) was in a fight with Mahito earlier, but honestly that would be a cool fight to talk about because I can see Mahito having changed one of them with his powers. I was leaning towards Gwen, but Ganke would be a cool one to see changed as well.

Whichever one it was, they almost didn't survive at all. It was purely because Miku was around and hated seeing what Mahito does to people that the person was able to survive.

This would be when Miku learned she can reverse Mahito's ability on people to an extent (they will never be 100% as they were, but most of the complications will have gone away).

So yes, Miku is absolutely in this fight. I would say her, Kento, Yu, and Junpei have the most reasons for being the ones to fight Mahito. Even more so than Yuji or Miles in this case. (This will be explained more later on).

I honestly don't know how this fight would go because there are a LOT of people fighting Mahito, but he is hard to hit and also could easily turn the allies against each other if they get touched by his ability (and if Miku couldn't get to them in time).

Like there is no way that these people here would willingly let Mahito leave. He is going to have to die or kill everyone here to survive. At least with what we have here for people fighting.

Maybe Hanami, Jogo, and Dagon come in and stop Mahito because the solution to the world's collapse was finally figured out, but even then I don't see Mahito or the people he's fighting just stopping and going "Oh sweet! We're cool now!"

No. Mahito is most likely going to die. The only saving grace is that he would be able to respawn at some point unlike in canon where it is more of a permanent death most likely.

This would hit the other three disaster curses the hardest, but they know he will be back one day.

As for who kills him? I honestly want it to be Miku. I want her to be the one to do it. Something she never wanted to do was willingly take a life, but she is going to do it to make sure humanity isn't going to continue doing these fucked up situations (I don't think Miku would know about the reincarnation effect that curses, trolls, and vocaloids would have).

Honestly I don't even know if I want the reincarnation because it feels like it takes away so much of the impact of this fight. Maybe there is WAS a surefire reincarnation, but if the solution for saving the world is carried out, then the reincarnation process is no longer a thing that happens because the magic is not there to allow it.

So it would become a choice for the disaster curses to either force the solution to wait (possibly destroying the world in the process) in the hopes Mahito will respawn in time, or go through with saving the world and possibly never seeing Mahito again.

Either that or there is minecraft logic and Mahito wakes up in a bed he slept in earlier lol. It could be more like Don't Starve where you have a meat effigy or a tell-tale-heart to bring you back. Or even like the gems where Mahito just needs to reform (though it would be at a specific location and not right where he died, mainly because he doesn't have a gem or is made of light but could have a similar regeneration ability to the gems).

This is something I am gonna have to think about. But no matter what, Mahito is going to be defeated in a very brutal way that could potentially mean he is forever gone.

-Vs. Suguru:

[VS Suguru: they are trying to win back Suguru with the power of Love And Incredible Violence]

Literally just the old care-bear stare or power of friendship beam directed right at Suguru point blank lol! (It just looks like Nightmare Moon turning back into Luna hehe). /j

This would most likely be the last fight out of every single one on this list. The solution to saving the world has been found (the solution where half the world doesn't have to die). And now all there is to do is to convince Suguru that it will work and to come back to the right side of things.

Absolutely Satoru and Suguru are gonna be beating the shit out of each other, but I can see Shoko also fighting because (small spoiler alert) Mahito got to it at some point and changed its body, almost killing it in the process if it wasn't for Shoko's incredible healing powers (most likely Miku was not around at that point to fix Shoko).

[Actually side note. Maybe because Mahito did attack Shoko, when Mahito was about to die, Suguru still did the absorption of Mahito? Like that was probably one of the few rules Mahito would have had to have followed was not attack certain people. Like Megumi, Shoko, Peni, but Mahito obviously didn't listen and ended up on Suguru's bad side, as well as everyone else's bad side lol]

Anyway, back to the fight. I don't honestly know how the fight would go to be honest. It would be very physical but also have a lot of downtime and talking, trying to convince each other to join their sides (Suguru wants Satoru and Shoko to see how making the world full of powered individuals, even if those individuals can't handle power and die as a result, is the right way, while Satoru and Shoko want Suguru to see their solution is one where people don't have to die at all!).

It would probably be a stalemate between the three, mainly because Satoru is not the over powered person like in canon, so blue and Suguru are honestly really close in power (both being over powered in terms of this universe though).

The turning point would be DJSS coming to help in this regard. I definitely feel like Suguru is going to need Nova to snap him out of the ideology that he has. Nova is like the only other person Suguru would ever listen to outside of his kids, Shoko, and Satoru (I will address Suguru's kids at some point, just not now).

I can see Nova being the reason that Suguru needs to accept the possibility that their solution to saving the world might work, and now he is going to work with them instead of fight against them.

(Sorry this one isn't the best, but there really isn't much to say other than Satoru and Suguru beat the crap out of each other while Shoko helps randomly and then Nova pops in).

So yea! Those are a lot of the major fights in the Eriverse based off of this list! Don't know which ones will be more canon than the others, but here they are!

Funny how Mahito is like the only real casualty. He just... His actions are a LOT more difficult to forgive for our cast unfortunately. But don't worry! I'm sure he'll be fine!

There are absolutely more fights to be had than just these ones though! Like a lot of the smaller fights and supporting characters are the Psychonaut characters. They are the ones who start off saving people from mass attacks on civilians.

Then you also have the trolls and the Homestuck main cast who are doing things more in the digital space, where like Peni, Margo, and the Mermaids will be doing more of their fighting (along with others and this would also be how domains and stuff are explained).

You have the minecraft mobs and gems who weren't even mentioned in this list at all. Like the Enderdragon, Wither, and Warden are absolutely players int his world. White Diamond is more of a background character being set up for an even further future, but she will have gems by the sides of the curses and stuff fighting with them (being disposable enemies basically).

And that's not even getting into the barrier being broken between the collective unconscious and the real world! Something I haven't even had time to get into yet!

Like I said before, the Eriverse Future Act is a LOT bigger and more complex than the other acts. It takes on a lot of different fights and problems that need to be solved because of the magic system going haywire from an excess of untamed magic.

So while these are some of the more major/end fights, they are absolutely not all of them! :D

tuesday again 2/22/22

what a pleasing date! a twosday, even! one of my favorite coworkers is getting married today in a botanical garden and i send good wishes from afar!

also, lots of short things this week bc a bitch is having some Medication Side Effects i need to tough out a bit longer before this doc will be convinced they are adversely affecting my life

listening orville peck has a new EP out but none of the songs have really latched themselves onto the black matter of my brain yet. my sister sent me a tiktok that had me in hysterics and ended up having a full version, great beeps and bloops, we sing “pull up a stepladder and give me a peck” when her cats are yelling at her from the floor now

reading fallow week

watching the cuphead show. my boss and i keep very close tabs on video games media efforts, and i’m not like contractually obliged here on this blog or in my actual dayjob (thank god) to watch every piece of video games media, but boy do i love to give opinions on it.

my dad’s side of the family has very strong subspecialities and opinions about different areas of film history, bc they’re all engineers and designers and married other engineers and designers. my favorite uncle veered really hard into the history of animation, like The Thing To Do when you visited him was sit in the pool until you got unrecognizably pruny and then huddle under a blanket in the air conditioning watching looney tunes in chronological order. so i cracked this childrens show open like WHEE a fun tribute to early animation!

in general, i find the first episode of the cuphead show to have a really unnerving combination of some of the rubber-hose early-animation style with modern adult animated american television facial expressions and dialogue. it has shot sequences, shooting angles, and moving background elements that felt very modern and jarring to me. the opening titles are killer (probably bc they’re done by an entirely different team)! the watercolor backgrounds are lovely! the devil’s song and dance number was fun to watch! everything else i don’t really care for and so i will not be giving it the ol three-episode try. the second episode has a “whoops some irresponsible kids have to take care of a baby!” shit and i fucking hate that trope. if anyone’s watched it straight through, let me know if it’s worth gritting my teeth to see the cab-calloway-inspired character’s walk cycle or nah

reading interviews it sounds like it was underfunded, a lot of “well here’s where we had to lean on the magic of netflix technology to cut corners”, which is a real shame- it could have been a lovely throwback and tribute to early animation and a really interesting intro to new generations without insane uncles. IF they got the money to really lean into the 2D aspect of it, given that the game was so lovingly hand-animated and is still memorable years after release in a very crowded genre FOR that art style. shame this childrens show was not the thing i, a sophisticated adult, was looking for, glad studio mdhr got that fat fat netflix check even if i think it’s a poor likeness of uhhh Their Game. always fun to keep an eye on netflix’s newest video game transmedia efforts, even if it’s weird that both castlevania and arcane have been widely praised for their animation and this one simply doesn’t hold a fuckin candle imo. part of that is different teams, part of that is they’re less willing to spend money on their more explicitly kids stuff, wish it was different, what can ya do

playing junk shop telescope by cephalopodunk, a free short in-browser bitsy game tagged not-exactly-sure-how-a-telescope-works with exactly one mechanic, and it does glorious things with that one mechanic. it’s so clearly signposted, i never got lost or turned around or stuck, mwah. love space, love pixels, the ending screen actually made me gasp so i’ll forgive it for straying very close to a specific conspiracy theory i had to debunk constantly at the astronomy tour internship.

how did i find this: on the itch.io recs page of a different game maker i like, after i struck out sifting through the free + browser + recent + popular intersection of tags. do wish itch let you exclude tags. i will never want to play a horror game in my life. bio/shock was pushing it

making i’ve been thinking a lot lately about how difficult any given long-running podcast is to get into. there’s an expectation of prior knowledge about injokes and references by episode 100, i think, and it’s hard to know what a good entry point is.

so i’m going to explain what the fuck “the wives” and “the boys” and “cowboyblogging” is, since i spent a good portion of last year in no fit state to do much of anything and it’s been kind of iffy so far this year also but i’ve looped back all the way around to productive procrastination on hobbies instead of productive procrastination on life shit.

coming up on three years ago, i watched the entire dollars trilogy movies (for a fistful of dollars, for a few dollars more, the good the bad and the ugly) with an upsettingly high fever and wrote a fic where i put the horrible men (angel, blondie, and tuco) into the postapocalyptic roleplaying video game fallout: new vegas (where in my version, the best version, the player character “the courier” is married to a pair of butch mechanic assassins veronica and christine). i have almost no memory of writing that original first fic, but it did spawn a much much larger fic (”The” cowboyfic, if you will) unpacking what exactly happens post-game and what happens when you get everything you think you want and some stuff about the fall of empires and capitalism.

this fic assumes some degree of knowledge of at least one of these properties. there is a dramatic difference between my writing ability of three years ago, when the tuesdayposts weren’t even a thing yet, and my writing abilities now where i give opinions about data for a living. there are only like half a dozen people i shout to about this thing. this is purely to amuse myself. i encourage you, the reader, to block the “cowboyblogging” and “ain’t that a kick in the head” tags if you’ve been reading this like “okay now i know what she’s talking about and i’ve decided i do not wish to see this content, why have there been no textile crimes yet this year”. i’m dealing with clothes moths right now it gives me the serotonin to make the horrible men pine and the bisexual/lesbian trio be disgustingly happy.

if you’d like to dip in anyway, good news! i didn’t put out a new chapter but i did double the length of the previous chapter and am working on this whole fucking project in a much more serious and sustained way (i say, knocking on wood).

Sometimes, when sunny visits kels house for a sleepover, (or just anyones house except for basils) the host would always wake up to:

A missing sunny (who is most likely in some weird ass place like the roof)

A sunny that it staring at you from the foot of the bed or beside it

A sunny that stares from the doorway (he stares alot)

A sunny that is playing bo en my time at an unreasonable hour but at a reasonable volume (or vise versa)

Alright so a different nonnie also sent me “How many times do you think sunny scares people by staring at them from the foot of the bed / beside them when they wake up?” So I’m....combining these two XD Also if you guys like....resend things can you say they’re a resend LOL bc if I have another Cho double take situation I’m going to backflip into the sun. Also don’t resend more than twice (i’m gonna be putting that in my bio bc....yeah don’t do it makes me anxious D:)

Okay mini housekeeping thing aside! This got long it’s under a read more because it’s long, but it’s full of shenanigans, sleepovers, and our local fave cryptid Sunny

I’m going to focus this in on post-canon, because I think that Sunny’s ultimate cryptid energy flows forth in his teen years. Also I really want to include the hooligans in on this (I’m...love them)

So pre-canon Sunny and Mari’s house was the go to location for their group of six. They were almost always there, but there was some unspoken rules.

You called before you came over (Only Kel didn’t follow this rule, but he always knocked and waited patiently at the door) and you had to be invited to stay for dinner. If not you went home when Sunny’s mom called a fifteen minute warning before dinner. There was also no arguing within the house. If there was an issue that needed to be addressed, Mari and Sunny’s parents would immediately send everyone home.

Post-canon Mari is gone and the house has been sold. Hero and Kel’s house becomes the go to hang out house after that. Their house is nearly night and day to Mari and Sunny’s

Mari and Sunny’s house was always neat and tidy and very quiet. Their parents generally left the TV off and didn’t use the radio, so unless one of the two children were making noise, everything would be silent. Kel and Hero’s house is in constant motion and activity. Sally is usually either babbling or screaming, music is always playing on the radio, and their main form of communication is friendly yelling at one another. Kel and Hero’s house also has an open door policy- anyone can walk in at anytime and they all know where the spare keys are hidden.

Post-canon I see a quick friendship building between Aubrey’s gang and Basil Sunny and Kel. Hero enjoys them all, but it’s not really his scene now that he’s spent a year or so at college. He will get brought along for some adventures, and he’s always up for hanging around the house with them, but when it gets to be a bigger group he prefers to just let them have fun.

When it’s just his four kids, Hero is always a part of the group though.

OKAY ALL OF THAT BUILDUP ASIDE LETS GET TO THE ACTUAL POINT OF THIS ASK

So this is when school is in session and Hero is back at college. Kel tells Aubrey that Sunny is coming up for the long weekend, and they should all do a sleepover at his house like old times. She agrees and they arrange it with Basil. Kim overhears their plans and she has FOMO so she arranges herself to be there when they tell Basil

Normally Kel makes it a point to try and include Aubrey’s friends (who are slowly just becoming friends) but this time he just pretends she isn’t there and tells Basil to come right after school and they can drive together to get Sunny.

Kim weedles it out of Aubrey later that day when they’re alone in gym class. The reason that they didn’t immediately invite her and the others? Sunny is apparently weird at night

Kim fires back that Sunny is always a little weird, but Aubrey is being fully serious. Unfortunately all that does is make Kim more curious. She goes to find Kel afterward and half asks/half demands an invitation to the sleepover. Kel seems a little awkward about her involving herself, but he agrees that she and the others can join in if they like.

Aubrey and the others arrive

Kim soon finds out that Aubrey was 100% right. Sunny is...weird at night.

At around 10:00 pm, Sunny disappears. Basila nd Aubrey went into the kitchen to make popcorn, and Kel was busy fiddling with the TV to get the movie to start. When he turns back to the couch, he asks where Sunny is. They realize Sunny has vanished.

Aubrey and Basil come in with the bowls of snacks, and Kel asks them if they’ve seen Sunny. Basil says to check the roof.

The roof. The hooligans all laugh (Basil is a sweet kid when you get to know him, but his nerves make even his jokes strange) The other three don’t laugh. In fact Kel gets up and goes to the door.

The hooligans follow out bewildered, and Sunny is o n t h e r o o f. CASUALLY. JUST THERE PETTING AN ORANGE CAT WHO IS LOUNGING PURRING NEXT TO HIM. AND KEL AND AUBREY AND BASIL DONT REACT??? Kel just waves?? and Sunny waves back???

“We’re gonna watch Insidious now, I know you haven’t seen that one before. Wanna come in?” “Kay” “Do you want to bring your cat in with you? I’ll put Hector on his leash” “Yes please”

Then the three just walk back and tell the hooligans to follow them in. Sunny got himself up so Sunny can get himself down.

It’s only the beginning of the madness. Sunny walks in holding the still purring orange cat and settles himself down in his specific corner of the couch (They were prewarned not to sit in Sunny’s spot) Aubrey cuts Kim off before she can ask about the roof, and starts the movie. Kim looks over at the cat, and it locks eyes on her, hissing.

The movie begins and Sunny will randomly speak but only to say when a character is going to die/be scared. Right before it happens. Every single time. Didn’t Kel say before that he hadn’t seen this movie?? It doesn’t matter Sunny keeps going

A ghost. A ghost. Lost in an alternate dimension by shamanic journey. It’s bizarre. The cat continues to purr a rusty old engine noise in Sunny’s lap, periodically looking at one of the hooligans and hissing, choosing a different one every time. Who’s cat is that????

They finish the movie and start to play board games. They pick monopoly and decide to divvy up into teams. Kim immediately claims Aubrey, Vance decides to go with Kel and Kel grabs Mikhael to create a trio. Charlie and Sunny silently sit beside each other, and everyone assumes that makes them a team. Angel pulls Basil to his side and they’re prepped to play the game.

Kim likes to consider herself a pretty good monopoly player, and Aubrey is a whiz with money and numbers, so she assumes they have this in the bag.

She did not account for the Sunny factor.

Sunny stares her down through the entire time. Kim is sure he doesn’t blink. She forgets to bid on auctions for properties and gives him extra rent money. They go bankrupt first, and Sunny turns his eye onto Kel who just laughs and gives Sunny finger guns. Sunny finger guns back (his face still a blank slate) and proceeds to also take all of Kel’s money.

They go to bed shortly after, and Kim is relieved. Nothing also weird can happen. Now she just has to sleep.

She wakes up in the middle of the night and adjust her position, turning over to face the other side of teh room. Four shining eyes stare back at her, catching the dim light from the kitchen. Kim shakily grabs her phone and turns on the flashlight, whirling around to see Sunny staring at her, his orange cat on top of his head.

She wakes all the rest of them with her shriek of terror. The group of four quickly settle to sleep once more, even Sunny crashing down next to Aubrey and Basil. hissing cat caught firmly in his arms.

She and the other hooligans stay up for a bit, frantically whispering about the oddness of the situation. They resolve to leave early in the morning, and to distance themselves as much as they can from...whatever Sunny is. They’re certainly glad he doesn’t go to their school anymore.

The next morning, the group of four wake up before the hooligans and cook a big breakfast. They put the phone on speaker and chat with Hero as they do so, catching up on his latest college stories. Bo en is playing from the cd player in the corner of the kitchen, kept low so as not to wake the others.

The hooligans creep downstairs and peer inside. The scene is shockingly...normal.

Sunny is still carrying his cat, but now Kel is feeding it tiny bits of bacon and it is stretching out of Sunny’s arms to reach the next delicious morsel. He’s chatting with Hero over the phone, speaking in full long sentences which is a rarity for Sunny. He even laughs quietly at a joke Hero tells.

Kim tries to translate the horror she felt last night into this morning, but it’s not there. Sunny doesn’t seem like an eldritch horror during the day. Just another teenager happy to be with people he enjoys.

Hero hangs up shortly after, and the group of four settle back into a placid silence. Aubrey breaks it by turning to the others

“I know it was weird, but I’m glad that they came for last night.” the three boys agree, and Sunny leans against the counter near Aubrey so she can scratch one hand under his cat’s neck while still flipping pancakes. When he speaks, his voice is near silent, but they all hear it anyway.

“They’re nice. They didn’t treat me different.”

The hooligans share a look and simultaneously agree to stay for breakfast.

how do you paint on procreate? i try to get that kind of look but none of the brushes work for me that I’ve found :(

Hi anon! I do have a lot of painting done in different styles with procreate, so I'm not entirely sure which style are you asking after specifically, or what kind of effect are you aiming for, but I'll assume that it's one of my most recent paintings and try to get some general direction in!

Buckle up though, this is a LONG post. I will explain my process from the sketch phase, and you will soon see why I go to that length.

First, if you haven't seen it, there was this ask in which I answered what my common brushes are. No matter what style I end up with, these are still pretty much all the brushes I use, so it's a good starting point! It's also pretty much a TLDR for this post, so if you would prefer the short version, that ask is the answer I'd give you.

Now, to further details:

So my most recent procreate paintings are these three that I've done for Ashton, Anders and my OC Elowyn. I finished my Ashton painting but still waiting to finish my FCG one so that i can post both of them at the same time, so I'll still use my WIP for now!

Step 1: The starting points for these are pretty similar, I do my line sketch using the 6B pencil and put in some colors underneath that line layer:

This is the brainstorming phase, so I try to not rush it and just look for a combination with good contrast and the general style I want, even if you can still see how different they are from the final products. I make sure to get a good line work and composition, because they affect the later steps so much.

I use all 3 brushes for the color sketch, but prioritize Gouache for its delicious, delicious texture, and the semi-transparency would help retain some of the background color for that delicious, delicious color harmony and variation. 🌈 If I need stark contrast or color-blocking, Nikko Rull is the brush to go to. I'll use my 2 other sketches for example (note that even this one has some slight texture!):

Step 2: I use color correction to get the actual Hue, Saturation and Contrast that I want. I don't have the exact screencap to show (because I paint directly on my sketch layers), but here are what I can salvage from the screenshots I sent to my friends during the process:

(Changed nothing for the Anders piece in this phase tho, I loved the original colors already!)

These 2 are very messy steps, but extremely important for 2 reasons:

It gets my brain worked up to build a precise art direction for the finished result (Anders with the uncanny lighting that bleeds into the background as if he's surrounded by the Fade, Ashton with stark contrast that emphasizes the galaxy brain and showcases their killer cheekbones, and Elowyn with those soft, dreamy colors that don't rely as much on the shading as on how the different areas transition from one another)

It builds up the texture! If you're a beginner artist, I still recommend the flat brushes, so that you can quickly spot your mistakes and focus on the fundamentals. But, if you're closer to the intermediate level (I'd like to consider myself on the lower scale of intermediate technical skills) and want to add in some flare the same way I do, then yes, go for the rough edges, the messy blends and the unrefined line work. I think they give my painting more character and more life. There is already so much going on in this particular area, just from me trying to imagine my lighting, and those are all made with them brush edges:

And, yes, at this point everything is still all over the place, like where are the soft and hard edges??? Where is the focus??? Some of them is already there (esp in the Ashton piece), but the painting is still generally messy as hell. So! I try to refine it in the rendering.

Step 3: For this step, I'll give some tips on how I achieved certain effects you see in these 3 paintings.

So, any time I want to refine my soft edges and/or color gradients, Gouache is my guy:

Nikko Rull is the option I rarely go to, but it's very good for blocking out a large area of colors, so I use it a lot for background, or my other paintings that require a cleaner style. For this phase, if I need to add sharp edges, whether for shading or line work, I use my beloved 6B Pencil.

For refined linework:

To create sharp-edged shading, highlight and rim light, I work in thin lines alongside my Gouache. I keep it organic and rough, still (and added another painting for extra examples):

For the sparkly little effects that either work as literal sparkles or shading touch-up, I use all kinds of brushes from MiksKS's Pattern Brush Set, but my favorites are Crosshatching light and Diagonal hatches. Depending on how early you work these patterns in during your painting process, you will get different effects. I usually put them in last. Also, you can always change your brush setting to get the pattern size you want.

dc: hmmmm most of the deaths i can think of i dont mind. i guess most ppls deaths in Heroes in Crisis, esp roy's. that was so dumb ugh. not big on them killing damian but the writing in batman and robin was rly good so it makes up for it. im sure theres someone im forgetting--oh WAIT

bart allens death in the flash it sucked so bad and one of his creators was so upset and died before bart allen was revived. that one definitely that one.

not many. all star batman and robin bc its so bad its funny. parts of rhato for that jason content but ive never finished it and i think rhato vol 2 isnt always bad.

15. Tell me about a plotline that could have been interesting if anyone else wrote it.

anything devon grayson does tbh like dealing with dicks stress over murder and guilt or him being romani (Tho him not knowing is dumb). it was so bad and racist ugh. other than that I think the spyral and ric grayson arcs coulda been good if they were like, combined maybe? and shorter. lmao

also the current robin 2021 run tbh... i think the idea of a tournment and damian grappling with guilt could be fun but the writer cares waaaaaay too much about his ocs to give damian real breathing room

speaking of damian: teen titans 2016 coulda been SO fun if they werent so racist and wanting to make damian a bad guy for caring about immigrants and people of colour lol. i rly loved what few good moments he had with wally, emiko, jackson, and the others.

for marvel... mybe trial of magneto coulda worked if the writers cared about magneto and wanda lol. or x-factor 2020 it had some good ideas but was ruined by the writers weirdness about akihiro and david... like just the racism combined with weird views of bi men lol

23. If you could erase one comic book from canon, what would it be?

oh this one is so hard.... either heroes in crisis (wally being a mass murderer) or batgirl 2011--no more abled babs she doesnt exist.

or countdown. i rly fucking hate countdown.

34. Which retcon do you hate the most?

for DC, four come to mind:

>Parallax isn't Hal Jordans fault

so if u dont know hal jordan back in the 90s broke down after his city was destroyed by doomsday and he lost many loved ones. as a result he went full on villain (parallax) and ended up destroying most of the green lantern corps and caused the zero hour event

he then was killed and later came back as the hero spectre, basically being a ghost hero and trying to atone for his actions he did in the lowest point of his life

anyways later on geoff johns got the reins and revived Hal and said it wasn't hal's fult at all, he was just possessed by an evil space bug made of fear, the real Parallax.

aaaand i hate that. I hate taking away Hals role in everything and making him a victim. I dont mind the other retcons Geoff Johns did to GL lore--hell i prefer it because he really fleshed things out and added the other colours and explained the weakness to yellow even!--but I think it all could have been done without stripping Hal of any wrong doings or guilt. Its rly lame.

He had his momentts of violence, yes but his anger had a trigger; he wasnt angry all the time, he was a sweet and intelligent kid who loved Bruce a lot and had a rocky relationship with Dick at first but they did eventually get along. He had a few friends, knew the titans, and was well liked by his family.

too many stories stress his violence and impulsiveness and make him out to be a bad person with at least trying to explore why he is that way and sympathsize with him.

not only that but the treating of his death as inevitable or his fault or anything like that frustrates me so fucking much bc the weight of death in the family, of its aftermath and a lonely place of dying, of under the red hood, really hinges on the fact that jasons death was a tragedy, one that shook Bruce like no other. because he lost his child who he loved!!!!!

Anyways, this episode was OVERWHELMING IN THE BEST WAY!

I figured I would like Raine a considerable amount just based on the owl house in general having like top tier characters, but now that we’ve actually seen them in action I love them SOOOO MUCH!! They’re definitely the type of person that’s shy until they get to know someone well (it was very relatable for me lol) and they show that really well with their interactions with Eda. I am Very concerned for them now, and I guess we finally know the like more secretive reason for the coven brand thingies, and I’m sad that it seems like we won’t get more of them any time soon due to Belos being horrible (as usual). You can really tell that Raine and Eda both care about each other a LOT; they were able to pick their relationship up (friendship? Relationship? Idk but that was absolutely not platonic lol) right where they left off, and I really appreciated that they were like, supportive and encouraging of Eda not trying to distance herself from Luz and King. (The “do you have kids???” joke was so funny I was laughing for a good 5 minutes straight ksjsksh). It genuinely broke my heart when they got separated and those two getting reunited is going right up there with lumity canon on my list of Things That Need to Happen by the End of the Show

Obviously this was a very big episode for Eda, and I appreciate that we got to see like a big range of emotions from her! She’s often either in her confident cool mode or acting more maternal, and really the only things she’s gotten more emotional about in the past have been related to Luz or parent/sibling things, so to see her get genuinely sad not only about Luz/King but also about Raine getting caught was kind of refreshing, in addition to seeing her a bit more flustered in some moments as well. Overall Eda’s characterization in this episode was just Very Dynamic and I appreciated it a lot! I also really just like that she is going out of her way to go against the emperor when she can, even if it’s just hitting some guards in the street. What Belos is doing is getting more and more concerning, and I want to make another post kind of listing all the weird details about EC stuff we’ve gotten this season, but that’s for later.

It’s also interesting that Eda’s magic might be coming back? It’s definitely strange how corrupted it seems, and she might want to stay away from bard for a bit until they can figure it out, but it was really creepy and effective for how they were using it

Bard magic is also so cool!? Like all of the scenes where Raine and Eda were playing together were sooooo pretty, which is definitely a plus, but also the uses for bard magic are so versatile and like, playing one specific note can do such a range of different things and it’s just so cool. Anyways yeah, Eda looked absolutely stunning in all of her close up shots this episode and it’s really not surprising at all that she has so many admirers/exes lol.

We also kind of got to see king’s dad? But he ended up getting officially adopted by Eda which makes me very happy because it just fits much better with the found family aspect of the show. It’s just so sweet how much the owl house crew cares about each other, and although we know that, it’s nice for them to show it more every once and a while.

We also got a surprising amount of development to the capabilities of abomination magic? I was not expecting that, but I’m not complaining bc abomination magic is one of my favorite types, and this episode definitely moved it up. The coven leader (I believe their name was Darius?) was very well portrayed with a really interesting character design, and oh boy were they powerful! I don’t think I realized abominations could do all of what was happening there, but it was very creative and well executed, especially when they combined themselves with the abomination as sort of a power-up thing? And also when they sent the other three BATS to the conformatorium? Idk I can’t tell if they’re like, one with the abomination (other than their hair) or if that’s just a thing abomination witches can do. Honestly it was so cool to watch even though they were working for the emperor and I was rooting against them, like just seeing the capabilities of the magic is just so interesting. It’s wild to compare to Amity’s skill set too, like I just feel like with a bit more development of her skills she’ll be an absolute beast in combat and I love that for her. Also we got to see the abomitons again, and I love the continuity of them being used by Kikimora (and Belos in hunting palismen). I also thought it was very funny when Darius (?) called Alador a hack because like, at the end of the day they’re all antagonists, but I do dislike some of them slightly less when they insult each other lol

Anyways, overall this episode, much like all the episodes of season 2 so far, was FANTASTIC! I really enjoyed it and I think this’ll definitely be one of my favorites because of how different it feels? The ending is obviously VERY scary and I’ll probably make a separate post later about that, but I’m just in all the different types of shock rn lol

Bless You Father for I Have Sinned (Fleabag, Hot Priest) 1/1

Did anyone watch Fleabag and/or want to read about a hot priest sneezing?

This works just fine as a standalone if u haven’t seen the show but for context: Hot Irish prob alcoholic “cool swear-y” priest and recovering sex addict and all-around hot mess main character (who doesn’t have a name) strike up a “friendship” that is just a poorly veiled excuse for spending time with someone they want very badly to fuck but can’t bc priesthood vow of celibacy and whatnot.

Here’s ~2k words in which I continuously get off on the idea of blessing a priest and unresolved sexual tension I also don’t resolve.

“Fuck you, calling me Father like it doesn’t turn you on just to say it…”

It happens for maybe ten minutes before it starts to stick out to her. Because it’s cold, as it always is on early-spring nights in London, and while they’re both fully dressed (unfortunately), neither is probably quite dressed enough to be out in a garden at this hour. And they’re a bit drunk—not that drunk, they’re both pretty practiced—on the G&Ts he’s so fond of for whatever reason. He specifically likes the kind you get already mixed in a can, which are especially shit, but it’s almost endearing that he likes those in particular. Well, very endearing actually. Goddamn this man—or… hmm, poor choice of words.

It doesn’t really grab her attention until he combines the sniffling with pinching his nostrils together.

“You alright, you’re quite sniffly?”

“I know, I dunno what’s going on,” he says, and punctuates it with a harsher sniffle than the ones previously unacknowledged, “Think ‘m just cold.” He zips his sweatshirt up a bit as if to illustrate.

“We could get you a blanket and swaddle you up like baby Jesus.”

He laughs. She extracts from her coat pocket a pack of cigarettes, takes one herself and angles the carton toward him in offering. Mostly because she wants him to scoot closer to her on the bench as she flicks the lighter for him. The flame illuminates the angles of his face in orange, the back of his fingers grazing her hand by happy accident, and yes, it’s a little pathetic that this momentary skin-to-skin contact is as erotic as it is to her, but that’s what you get when you fancy a priest isn’t it?

“They’re always describing him as being swaddled. Odd word, swaddled. Sounds kind of violent.”

“It does kind of,” he agrees, leaning back against the bench and exhaling a stream of smoke into the night air. Her plan worked, he’s ever so slightly closer to her now, post cigarette exchange, close enough that when he sniffles she can feel the slight vibration of his shoulders through the loose fabric on her coat sleeve. It unites them like an accidental spark of electricity she can sense just faintly enough to feel jumpy. Or turned on. Or both.

She really shouldn’t be this shameless about trying desperately to corrupt a man of the cloth she wants to get under. Maybe she’d feel properly guilty if she wasn’t quite so fucking horny.

“So you did read more than just the passages I marked for you?” He asks, at once surprised and pleased and maybe nervous, grinning but also looking away for a moment as if he could disguise all of that.

“Not really, just the birth of the ol’ lord and savior. It seemed like it’d be climactic.”

“Was it?”

“Can’t say I climaxed reading it, no,” she says with a cheeky look that elicits the laughter she’s looking for, “No offense but it’s really quite boring, this book you love so much.”

“Yeah… that’s a tragically common sentiment among reviewers.” He’s scratching at his nose with the back of one wrist with such intensity it’s unmistakeable how much it’s bothering him.

“Don’t care much for the writing style either, I have to say.”

If the irritation could be resolved with a mouse-like scrunch of the nose he’d have figured it out by now, and clearly he hasn’t because he still has to shrink into his crossed arms like an accordion with a fairly high-pitched, vocal and thus somehow Irish-accented, “Hehh-ishhYUE!”

“Bless. The only way I was able to get through it was by imagining you in every speaking role.”

It’s a sentence meant to provoke him, not unlike most of her sentences, and for a minute as her eyes are on her own exhaled smoke and he fails to respond, she wonders whether it sounded even weirder than she meant it, but as it turns out he’s just about to sneeze again — squinting into the distance and bringing an arm to his face in slow motion.

“Mmff-SHOO!” He blinks in surprise as he resumes his previous position on the bench, now shifted just a bit farther away from her. Damn.

“Ugh, sorry. Every speaking role?? Ohfuck— ahh-ishSHEU!”

“Jesus.”

“You imagined me as Jesus??”

“No I mean Jesus, are you okay, did you catch something?” Of course she imagined him as Jesus.

“Ooh I hope not,” he says with a nervous look, “that’d be lousy timing.”

“The lord works in mysterious ways.”

“Thuh-that he does—” A sudden inhale, a crooked arm rising at a much hastened speed. It begins in a manageable way, somewhat controlled, but then it seems to get away from him.

“Hh… hehd’SHHUE!”

“Bless you, Father."

He mumbles a thank you bookended by soft snuffling.

“Maybe he’s sent you a plague of sneezing. He does that sometimes doesn’t he? Send plagues?”

His face just scarcely conveys amusement before it’s hijacked again by the same expectant expression, but he still attempts to talk through it, even as irritation becomes evident in every feature. “S-sometimes…”

She thinks about saying bless you in advance but decides instead to just wait for him to succumb to it. A flicker of lashes, a reveal of the very tips of canines, his entire face crinkles around his visibly twitching nose. It pulls him downward and then forward in that order, as he collapses into a crooked arm as if stumbling despite being seated.

An especially desperate, “hehhSCHOO!” that begins quietly but certainly doesn’t end that way.

“God bless you, Father, again.”

“Wow,” he says with a sniff, knuckles swiping under his nose in a single smooth motion, “Maybe I’m allergic to you. My body’s having a reaction.”

“Is it?”

An eyeroll and a grin, and then he goes back to scratching at his aggravated face in a manner that’s becoming aggressive.

“Well stop manhandling your nose that’s clearly not working.” Before she can think better of it, she takes his elbow to pull the offending arm away from his face. She can feel his muscles tense with the movement, but when she looks up at him there’s only a blurry-eyed smile chased by a nervous huff of a laugh. Another line she can’t uncross but doesn’t particularly want to.

The therapist hadn’t needed to point out that her all-consuming attraction to someone she couldn’t have was probably a healthy coping mechanism of her recently adopted abstinence. She hadn’t really expected this though — for her advances to not be rejected entirely. She hadn’t planned for hope to cease feeling like such a daft, one-sided notion.

“Should I even be blessing you or is that overkill? Or am I even qualified to bless you? Can one bless a priest if they’re not like, anointed or something?”

“You can bless me,” he confirms, looking like he’s barely got a handle on controlling his own eyebrows. Or lips for that matter. God, that mouth, those lips. Parting by accident the way she’d like to make them open on purpose.

“Little greedy of you. You’re not blessed enough as is?”

“Neh—neverhurts…” He pitches sidewards with a slurred, tellingly tipsy, “hehh-ESHHyoooo!”

“Bless you…”

“Thank you,” he sniffles with embarrassed necessity, bringing the back of a sleeve to his nose.

“Hold on, I think I have some tissues,” she says as she feels around in her bag in the darkness, “Well, cocktail napkins at least.” Another knuckle brush as she hands them to him. How arousing. How pitifully arousing. She really should come up with ways to hand him things more often.

“Ahh you were holding out on me,” he says, and then after a gentle blow, “Sorry.”

“You are coming down with something aren’t you?"

He thinks about it, bringing the napkin away from his nostrils with a final follow-up dab. “I dunno, maybe?”

“Do you feel ill?”

“Mostly just very itchy.”

How many other chances will she get… She reaches a hand to gingerly press the back of her fingers against his forehead. He blinks a few times in response, rapidly and reflexively, and swallows back a smile. There’s a burning in her stomach that’s neither pleasant nor unpleasant.

“Um, you feel okay I think?” She says, attention course-corrected back to the cigarette crumbling in her hand, but still glancing at him to measure the aftermath of the relatively bold gesture and they lock smiling eyes in the process.

If he really wanted to ward her off he’s doing a phenomenally shitty job of it. She knows he wants her. God if only that was enough, to know he wanted her.

“I think you’re right I’ve been sent a plague of sneezing. Probably trying to tell me something.”

“Something about how your new friend could take care of you?”

He grins with half of his mouth. “Or something about how I probably shouldn’t be drinking G&Ts in the middle of the night with my new friend who I like a little too much.”

Oh he… really shouldn’t have given her that.

“ExxSHHUE!!” He shakes the whole bench with this, then straightens back up, not looking entirely recovered, and says almost to himself, “And about how I probably shouldn’t tell my new friend that I like them a little too much.”

“But you did anyway and he hasn’t, I dunno, smote you down yet.”

Irritation is still etched into his features, his chest slowly swelling with air, hastily fiddling with the napkins.

“Are you actually going to sneeze again? You haven’t finished?”

He shakes his head as his eyes close and seizes into a rushed, “hehESHHyue!"

“It’s a plague I can’t stop! Snf, it’s out of my hands."

She knows the night’s over, she does. She gets the sense that she’d been invited to overstay her welcome, but it’s getting past that point now. Whenever she leaves after being around him her face hurts from smiling like an idiot the whole time and she comes away aching in more ways than one. That ache is starting already, another sign they’ve stretched this interaction too long once again.

However, alcohol. “If you tell me to leave and you sneeze again perhaps we’ll know whether or not it was divine intervention.”

“He might just be punishing me now anyway,” he sighs, remembering a cigarette he may not have taken a single drag from, neglected and foreshortening in his fingers.

“We haven’t done anything we’re just talking. I’m a—what is it, parishioner?”

“That is a word, yes. Snf! Though it implies someone who’s actually going to church to, you know, practice their faith."

“I’m a parishioner here to…” she’s not even sure what to say, she still doesn’t know shit about Catholicism aside from the fact that it’s a massive cockblock, “seek your… counsel? Guidance? Guidance counseling.”

He puts a hand over part of his face, tired but amused. “You can’t act innocent even when you’re trying your best, can you?"

She almost snorts. Is this what he thinks trying her best looks like?—No, don’t actually say— “Who said I was trying my best?”

Why can’t she stop herself from saying things like that to him? The only thing that’s going to stop her now is a ‘no’ that’s actually firm enough not to give way when she presses against it relentlessly. He honestly needs to just get it over with before he really gives her too much to hold onto. She’s not going to win out over God, the guy’s pretty fucking stiff competition.

Goddamnit, just break her heart already, what the fuck is he waiting for? This should have ended ages ago, and now it’s getting dangerously close to too late.

Was it unfair to assume he’d be stronger than her? Or is he trying to hurt himself too? A duetted exercise in masochism, mutually assured destruc—

“—ESSHHYUE!” He looks at her through wet lashes, bleary and sheepish and drunk and cute and fuck.

She sighs loudly, looks skyward and says, “Right, you’ve made your point! I’m leaving!”

The original plan for the Mirage thing was for Kory to react reasonably and not blame Dick at all, and leading to their successful marriage. However, behind the scenes interference nixed that plan, and orders were given that Dick and Kory were to be broken up instead, leading to that whole mess

Do you happen to have a source on that? Not that I don't believe you because it would make a LOT of sense, it's just that if there's anything I've learned from being in the DC comics fandom it's that there's a lot of unsourced 'common knowledge' going around that's just plain wrong and I'd like to avoid falling for that. again. bc I've done it before (a lot. I am very gullible) and it's embarrassing.

But even if they had to break them up due to editorial demands I feel like they could've done that in way better and way more natural ways. Disclaimer that I don't like dickkory to begin with so my opinion may be biased, but there's way better angles you could've taken for a break up plot than the massacre of Kori's character that happened now.

I skimmed the break up plotline last night (I'm not finishing this comic because there's only so much bad writing my brain can handle, but I'd like to know the basics on what happens to Donna and Kori in it), and the thing that really got me is that they flirted with actual solid reasons for why Dick and Kori might be better off broken up but then consistently wrapped it in so much bad writing I can barely even give them credit for it. Instead of that weird contrived plotline with Mirage and Sexy Evil Raven that happened now, you could've simply had a B-plot of Dick and Kori's relationship slowly falling apart.

Their relationship was already quite rocky; while they clearly love each other very much, their personalities are quite different and that frequently leads to conflicts. We've seen that mostly with Dick lashing out at Kori when he has his own personal issues going on, and Kori blaming herself for it, and Kori wanting to be closer to Dick while Dick doesn't feel ready to make that kind of commitment. You could've easily extrapolated reasons to break up from these semi-frequent issues.

anyway this got long so there's an example of what you could do with this plotline under the cut

For example, we know that Dick always wears disguises when dating with Kori, and had to move out of her apartment to protect his identity. Kori values openness, and it wouldn't have been OOC for her to become unsatisfied with the secrecy surrounding their relationship. She likely wouldn't feel like she has the right to pressure Dick to out his secret identity (because she doesn't), and since there's no easy way around it otherwise, I can imagine it putting a strain on her.

You can couple this with the fact that Dick has attempted to restrict Kori in many ways; it's even directly acknowledged by Dick himself that he's tried to change Kori rather than taking her as she is, and that this was a mistake. (For the record, I don't think this would be impossible to work through, or that it means Dick doesn't love her, but we're talking break up plotline here.) By contrast, Kori has always tried her absolute best to be understanding and accommodating to Dick, and even though she is pushy sometimes, Dick has stated/implied this is something he actually appreciates. The break up plotline in canon already mentioned that Kori has always lived for others, and now wants to explore what she wants for herself. You can expand on this by having Kori become dissatisfied with the effort she puts into accommodating Dick vs. the seeming lack of effort he puts in.

The catalyst for this can absolutely be the Mirage plotline. The thing is, I don't think it's unreasonable or OOC for Kori to be upset about the fact that nobody noticed she was missing. It's not that anyone did anything wrong, but it's got to hurt, being tied up in a basement for days, only to finally break out and find out nobody noticed you were gone. Even with a reasonable Kori who recognizes that this isn't Dick's fault, I think it'd be completely understandable if she was still upset.

This could be interesting to explore because Kori, as a rule, lives by her emotions, but she's also spent enough time on Earth that she's learned the value of logical reasoning, and why you sometimes need to put your feelings second. In this case, logical reasoning says she shouldn't be upset, but emotionally, she still feels that way. This conflict could be a good catalyst for getting her to re-examine how exactly she wants to live, and how her relationships contribute to that. Particularly, she could take a closer look at her and Dick's relationship and come to the conclusion that while they clearly love each other, it's somewhat unbalanced, and might not actually be what she needs. The reason Kori has pushed through all this before is because she loves Dick, and that's all that matters to her, but with her taking a new look at the benefits of rationally examining your emotions, she might start doubting a little.

This could also tie back in to a line Donna said way back when Dick and Kori first got together that kind of lives in my head rent free but never got expanded upon. Namely, right after Dick and Kori get together, Dick's personal troubles start boiling over and he takes it out by being kind of a bitch to Kori. Donna and Kori have a conversation about this, and at some point (I forget the exact details), Kori says that she's in love with Dick, and Donna responds, "Are you sure you're not just in love with being in love?"

Like, again, dickkory hater bias here, but one of the reasons I was disappointed by the canon portrayal of dickkory was that it always felt like Dick was getting way more out of this relationship than Kori. In particular, I just. Genuinely have no idea what Kori likes about Dick. They've never established that. I can guess and extrapolate, but while Dick has stated repeatedly and explicitly that he loves Kori for the openness of her emotions, her passionate nature, and compassion, Kori. Hasn't done anything like that with Dick. Again, I don't think this would be impossible to work through, but again, break up plotline. In this case, Kori could think back to Donna's words, and realize she was at least partly right; that it's not necessarily Dick specifically that Kori loves, but more the sensation of being in love itself, which she could get with virtually anyone provided she fell for them.

All of this could be combined with Dick's new clinginess regarding Kori, which is canon. I don't know WHY his mental health was going downhill that fast bc I'm only here for Kori, but regardless, you could have Kori getting worried about how much Dick depends on her emotionally, just like she already did in canon.

All this, combined with her newfound worry that she might simply not be getting enough out of this relationship herself and her feeling increasingly restricted in it, puts stress on her. Kori is an emotional person, and the reason she's put up with all of Dick's shit so far was that she loves him, wholly and completely. But if she started thinking it might be a better idea to take a slightly more rational approach to this relationship, the way Earthlings usually do, I think her eventually reaching the conclusion that a break up would be healthier for both of them wouldn't be OOC.

Of course, this does kind of depend on your interpretation of Kori, and the arc you want her to have. Canon sent her in wildly the opposite direction, in which she got more in touch with her Tamaranian roots and decided to live by them fully, which I don't mind in theory, but it was just. SO badly written. I think this would be a much more logical progression of her character after staying on Earth for so long, particularly since she's already become more willing and able to take a deep breath and calm her emotions if necessary. I'm not saying you'll have to basically just give her Earth's values when it comes to emotions, absolutely not please don't do that, but for this particular plotline, I think it'd work.

Plus, if they wanted to, this also leaves a lot more room for a reversal of the decision. If editorial changed its mind, it would've been really easy to give Dick an arc of doing a bit of soul searching, proving he can stand on his own, and proving he can support Kori emotionally in this relationship, and Kori would likely be extremely happy to take him back because she really does love him to pieces. Again, maybe it's the dickkory bias, but I think it'd even be good for them, in the long term.

Of course, none of this fixes the fact that the Mirage plotline was a really shitty portrayal of sexual assault, but I feel like that's been discussed fairly well by fandom at this point (I mean, it's not mentioned that frequently, but it's well-discussed for a 30-year-old plotline and people seem to be aware of the problems with it), so I don't feel like I really have much to add to that discussion. By contrast, whenever this arc comes up, I rarely see people mentioning how OOC Kori was, and they even sometimes use it to bash her/dickkory in general, so I felt like it was worth discussing on that angle.

I think Undyne's determination has less to do with like something that happened in the past and more like the overlap between determination as an actual physical thing VS a spiritual thing. Whereas the amalgamates were injected with determination by Alphys, Undyne makes her OWN. You've killed her best friend. You're going to kill the love of her life. You're going to kill her mentor. You're going to kill everyone. You've killed HER. But she still has to stop you. Everyone is counting on her 1/2

Undyne's whole motif is letting the monsters of the Underground achieve their hopes and dreams. Theres a reason she is the boss fight in Waterfall, the most backstory rich area in the game. Hope and dreams have just as much weight as determination does, its what helps you defeat Asriel. And Undyne the Undying's design mimics Asriel's because in Genocide SHE is the heroine, SHE is the determined hero that defies death in order to save everyone she loves via the hopes and dreams of everyone (2/2)

but you can definitely be right!!!! tbh your idea seems much more par for the course than the spaghetti im throwing at the wall

even then, though, it’s stll so interesting bc like!!!! undyne’s courage is undeniable, and her fight to protect the underground plays Such a huge role in her whole waterfall arc. and, in the spiritual sense, she is absolutely determined!! that just makes me WONDER though bc, like, canonically, monsters Are Not determined! they don’t have that threshold!

and then, in looking at determination in the spiritual sense, what exactly makes undyne different? is it that her desire to live and protect the underground unlocks that threshold needed for determination? at one point, could monsters be determined, but then their millennia trapped underground biologically/psychologically stripped them of that? so then could any monster in the underground, when facing high enough stakes, have that determination? or is it just undyne?

bc then i think about the other bosses in either route, like papyrus, mettaton, asgore, sans. where undyne is the monster/boss capable of possessing determination, sans is probably the one least likely to have any threshold for determination (this is bc his entire boss fight is him realizing he can no longer be an observer, he is literally the last line of defense between chara and the annihilation of all monsters). mettaton is complicated bc as a napstablook turned corporeal, i dont even know where to BEGIN with him. but then there’s papyrus and!! it feels like he should be capable of feeling determined. in both the pacifist and genocide route, he is so assured that the human has some internal goodness. while, in the genocide route, that hope could be translated to fear, that still makes me wonder: under what circumstances could a monster’s determination be unlocked? is it not solely life or death? does it require some ulterior motives (aka undyne’s whole character being protecting the underground)? and like!!! it’s just so fun to think about bc, say it is undyne’s spiritual determination being unlocked, it’s so interesting that she’s the one differentiated!! that even papyrus, a character brimming with good and happiness and love, doesn’t have that determination, but undyne, who has a similar type of passion and goodness within her, does!!!

with experiment undyne, i will admit my theory is very much uhh wild! and unhinged! and, while my theory is much more playing in the “what if’s” of the science of artificial determination, it still makes me wonder! especially in the boss fight herself. ever since i first saw her genocide boss fight, i’ve always been a bit fixated on her eye, specifically the one w/ the eye-patch that eventually seems to have Some type of arrow power. while this definitely could have just been A Design Choice (and one i stand by!!), undertale is a game that reveals its complete lore when the pacifist and genocide route are put together. thus, in a hypothetical situation, i don’t think it would be out of the question that undyne’s eye could still Do that even in a pacifist route.

but even then, there are holes to poke! such as why doesn’t she use it? if undyne has been injected with artificial determination, why is she, frankly, normal until it’s a matter of life and death?

(to cut to the punchline before i get into my bullshit: i think it’s bc, at first, it seemed as if the artificial determination just Didn’t Work and had no affect, when in reality it needed to be met with spiritual determination as well)

and, again, i know i’m playing with a lot of hypotheticals right now, and mostly this is me just kinda fun bullshit theorizing, but i think it could have something to do with the fact that she has the threshold for spiritual determination! the reason i even think that she would offer herself up to determination experimentation is bc of the loyalty and love she has for asgore and the underground. i would argue that she is just as invested in asgore’s plan as asgore himself is, and she obviously sees him as some type of father-figure. so that alone gives her this Drive to do whatever it takes for the underground to survive.

so, therefore, i think in regards to this hypothetical experiment undyne, i think it quite literally is that spiritual determination threshold combined with artificial determination

and for that, i quickly want to talk abt the amalgamates and why they tie into this:

the timeline: corpses/souls injected with determination --> no reaction --> corpses wake up and act normal --> ??? happens --> (quickly leads to) amalgamates

and so then that once again raises the question: what differentiates undyne?

i think, for that, we then have to consider another question: if most monsters do not have the physical determination to continue living after death, can that determination be given when they’re already dead? monsters in general already have no threshold for determination, so can that be artificially made if it never existed in the first place?

bc while alphys’s experiment, iirc, was to see what happened when a soul was injected with determination, i think the other much needed question is if monster souls could even Handle determination

and, while we do not know specifically what went wrong with the amalgamates (aka like How did they melt together), we do know that their physical forms really were not able to handle the artificial determination, imo most likely bc they do not even have a threshold for spiritual determination

but undyne is, as you have noted, different!

so, frankly, i think you’re right! i think undyne does have an inherent spiritual determination. it’s uncommon in monsters, but her want to save the world is enough to leave her determined

however, i think That would have just been enough to keep her alive

i think it’s artificial determination that gave her that final form! to reference back to the amalgamates, they were all creatures whose powers we had seen before, but different now and, specifically, more powerful. that very same thing could be said for undyne! her powers are, essentially, things we have seen before, but fucking to Max Intensity

AND THEN!! AND THEN!!!!!

when you do kill heroine undyne, she doesn’t turn to dust first

she melts first, and then turns to dust!!!!!

and, honestly, it’s that small detail that sent me down this rabbit hole, bc the only ever time we’ve seen monsters melted together are the amalgamates!

i think the main difference between heroine undyne and the amalgamates is the fact that undyne, at first, had No Reaction to the determination at first bc, since she most likely already had this secret threshold for spiritual determination, it wasn’t the Biggest of changes. it wouldn’t have had such a drastic reaction on her physical form bc, even if she didn’t know it yet, it wasn’t an entirely foreign substance

the amalgamates, however, aka monsters who had no spiritual determination, could only handle the artificial determination for an unknown amount of time before their bodies began rejecting the chemicals and becoming..... that

of course, then, this leaves me with even more questions, such as could undyne sustain this final form? would her body eventually give out, overcome by determination? was this form only meant for life or death situations?

and uhhh i think this is the end!! if you made it this far and are thinking to urself “damn you’re really an english major when you write like this?? this isn’t even comprehensible” do not fret!! i know this theory is kinda a shitshow, and it’s one of those things where i can keep myself up all night thinking abt this and talking myself in circles bc there are some points that i think have strengths and other points that are probably pretty weak

basically though!! i see the connection between artificial determination and undyne through the fact that her form actually changes, the reveal of her legit power eye, the way her attacks have been altered, and the fact that she melts at the end (akin to the amalgamates’ appearances) before poofing into dust

this has been,,,, a shitshow i am so sorry i hope this was at least somewhat understandable ajkdsjkdsjk
