ᓄᐦᑕᐃᐧᕀ ᐊᐢᑯᑖᐢᑯᐱᓱᐣ nohtawiy askotâskopison, My Father’s Cradleboard by Morgan Possberg Denne
The New Gallery, November 18 - December 22, 2023
“Cradleboards have been used for thousands of years by our ancestors to carry and love for our future generations. They have protected us, acted as an external womb, and given us a place as children to watch our parents' culture and learn from a safe distance. I’ve always wondered if the fact that neither my father, his father, or myself was ever put in a cradleboard may have had a long term impact on our development, personhood, and our coping mechanisms to the ways that colonialism, residential schools and the foster care system has affected my family.
Now as an adult I deeply wish I could rewind the clock and put myself, and my father before me, and his father before him in a cradleboard as a child. To softly sing songs to us, give us safety, and to give us a connection to our culture in a safe environment. Maybe this would fix things. As kids when we were supposed to be kept safe and playing in the woods we were instead being prepped for the meat factory - the eternal meat grinder of colonialism.
The western world teaches us to push aside this childhood imagining and innocence - “These things can’t be undone!”, but what if they could? In another world somebody took better care of us, in another time we learned to drum and sing and dance, in another place we were listened to by adults who had the capacity to love and care for us.
These hot chest and aching throat feelings, the times of biting back angry tears and saying “It’s fine” have to count for something….right?”
“Morgan Possberg Denne is Two-Spirit millennial scoop and foster care survivor; with settler, Cree, Metis, and Chippewa blood connections. They have grown up in treaty 7 territory, and have relatives in southern and northern Ontario. Morgan creates imaginative, illustrative objects which could be seen as pieces of possible narratives, different ways to connect with the past and potential futures through layers of abstraction with no right or wrong answer. What matters to them is not accurately recreating the past or to predict the future, but rather to capture an inner truth and a possible alternative reality of colonial experiences. In a sense, creating new culture from a series of “what-ifs” and new stories / lore. Their work has been recently shown at the Confederation Centre for the Arts and Gallery Gachet.”

Persona 25th Anniversary Protagonists Arts. (including remastered game promotion) from Persona 5 Royal Art Book.
* Some sources of the art compilation are placed incorrectly so I fixed them myself to prevent confusion for which collaboration art is from.
Source from here, scanned by VeskScans on Twitter. For other 25th visuals from the book go here.

This year had been a mostly chill one until September. The highlight of my year is that I got a gig as a music writer/reviewer for an online magazine, which is still quite wonderful. These albums have been my soundtrack for the year, in which I also became a huge Steely Dan fan (thanks to a recruiter who has a history in the music biz. Thank you!), and fell back in love with Paramore (it's like we are growing up together...). I have some other releases I need to give my time to (Mitski, and Hozier. No need to yell at me, I know!) but these records were the ones that I really loved:
This is Why - Paramore
Red Moon in Venus - Kali Uchis
the record - boygenius
the rest - boygenius
The Age of Pleasure - Janelle Monáe
PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE - Christine and The Queens
My Soft Machine - Arlo Parks
Mid Air - Romy
Laugh Track - The National
Can't Buy A Thrill - Steely Dan (basically all their 70s albums)
There were other releases that I would have loved but didn't due to the artists' behavior (mainly Doja Cat and The Kills. I listened to both when they dropped, and, while there are a few songs I really like, I found it easy to put them aside). But, so it goes. This year is sadly ending on a downcast note for me, but I do look forward to new music in the new year.

Graphic Novel Recommendations: Over the Garden Wall 🍂 Edition
It’s spooky month, so here’s some graphic novel/comic recommendations that have similar energy to that quintessential autumn cartoon, Over the Garden Wall.
The Secret of the Stone Frog by David Nytra: A pair of siblings wake up in a mysterious, whimsical, and dangerous woodland world and encounter many strange creatures and places on their journey back home. Sound familiar?? This is extremely similar to OTGW in the best of ways, and the spooky, dreamlike atmosphere is a real treat. The artwork is gorgeous, extremely detailed ink drawings. What’s not to love?? Highly recommend if you love OTGW.

Kerry and the Knight of the Forest by Andi Watson: A boy finds himself navigating a malevolent forest with the aid of a mysterious guide. Contains ghostly children, an evil forest spirit, and a recommendation from Patrick McHale himself. The art is simple but has a similar patterned charm. Some panels reminded me of Cartoon Saloon’s Secret of Kells. Definitely worth getting lost in!
Tumblr media
Twistwood Tales by Twistwood (AC MacDonald): This is a webcomic, not a graphic novel. (However, you can preorder a physical book, to be released in 2023!) A bright and colorful cast of whimsical characters populates an autumn wood. Very charming and funny, and the character design is top notch!

Here’s my few personal picks after this month’s Nintendo Direct. It’s a good thing I’ve already downloaded the Game Boy online service while my membership still active. However it was interesting to check out Metroid Prime Remastered being released in digital; while waiting for the physical copy later on. I think it’s worthy to added to my wishlist through Nintendo Eshop. Though I wanted to share of getting bigger SD Card; just in case.
Also, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom costs $70? Ouch. Do hope Nintendo won’t be trending going forward. 🙏
