I knew I couldn't stay away long... so here is the next chapter! It's by far my longest written, sitting at 13,000 words - and it's a heavy one. As Nomasaki scales the mountain to get to the matriarch's cabin, the story of the Yamamori clan is told. And we also find out how Kyo met Mikomi during the Third Shinobi War - and of Nomasaki's destiny.

This is one of my favourite chapters because I'm a lore nerd lol

This writer's block was definitely one of the most annoying, if not, agonizing. Anytime a fight scene pops up I hit a brick wall (evidently). It feels good to publish a chapter again after such a roadblock, so I hope you all like this Gaara POV chapter - we only have a few POV chapters left to go before we reach the fic's climax!

Anyways... in this chapter, the threat of war emerges as Gaara tries to avoid crisis abroad and in Sunagakure - and Hakuto has a vision of the future, with grim implications.

It finally happens - Setsuka is born! This is basically the last pregnancy/kidfic chapter I ever plan on writing in this fic series. Writing infants/young children in fiction is hard, so I'm glad they at least grow up fast thanks to timeskips (lol). The next few chapters will be posted sometime mid August because I need to take a break from writing. The end approaches, with only 15 more chapters left! Can you... BELIEVE IT? (bad joke, sry)

The more I’m writing and drafting Desert Flowers, the more I’m loving the dynamic between my OCs Nomasaki (main character) and Sana. Having only been introduced in the final arc of the first fic in my OC-centric series The Wolf and the Tanuki, Sana is now one of my favourites.

(kinda spoilers if you didn’t read Sand and Snow)

Sana was imprisoned in the silver jade mines with her clan until Nomasaki and Gaara’s victory over Koga, and took up a life in Yamagakure with the rest of her people, the Kumatsume. At 16, Sana proved herself to be a budding warrior, living up to her clan’s reputation as the ‘bear-people’. After a visit from the Kazekage and Nomasaki, she and some of her clansmen journeyed across the sea to free other imprisoned folk.

When Sana returned to Yama, Kyō appointed her as his vassal and entrusted his right-hand Ekashiba to begin instructing her on the blade. She admired Nomasaki not just for her act of freeing her and her clan from the mines, but also for her strength and determination in battle. Sana then made it her goal to become Nomasaki’s student, so that she may learn how to tap into her beast-blood Kekkei Genkai. Nomasaki agreed, and after the birth of her and the Kazekage’s first child, she became Sana’s sensei.

As Nomasaki dealt with her trauma and regained her powers, training Sana reconnected her with her shinobi way. Nomasaki was originally forced into becoming a kunoichi by Kenzō and his schemes, but realized her purpose was to protect the ones she loves - and to protect her homeland. Nomasaki decided she was to make sure the next generation of Yamamori and Kumatsume know how to use their powers to become beasts, and training Sana on the mountain helped her regain the strength within herself that she had thought she lost.

Writing currently, and although my fic and its main character Nomasaki (OC) is a tragedy... the true tragedy is her parents, Kyo and Mikomi. Particularly Kyo, her father.

Think about it.

Imagine meeting the love of your life and having to leave after your daughter is born because your best friend's crazy advisor signed your death warrant. You then live the next 17ish years in exile believing they're safe, only to find out when you're released that the village was actually destroyed. Oh, and your wife is dead. Also, you're only free because there's a war for the fate of the world. And when your daughter finally meets you, she thinks you abandoned her because you thought she was born a monster. But that's not all - your wife is brought back as a lifeless zombie by the ones who started the war and near kills your daughter, forcing you to help defeat the woman you once loved. And then you get a tree through the leg and have a permanent limp because of it.

Mikomi, her mother, on the other hand... was born to the head family of her clan. Her parents died of a fever, leaving her as the last Yamamori at sixteen. Imagine living alone in your clan's huge empty house, picking herbs, hunting in the wilds, and avoiding the villagers because they think you're the literal embodiment of the village's downfall. At eighteen, you meet the love of your life by chance and have a whirlwind romance. You have your daughter, but your husband leaves for your family's safety. He tells you he'll return. Years go by, and he does not come back. Melancholy sets in. Your daughter grows and asks where her father is, but you can't bring yourself to answer. She begins to learn the cruelty of the world, and you try to teach her how to survive in that world. But you get sick. You end up on your deathbed and your grieving 10-year-old won't stop crying. You want to cry, too, because you don't want to abandon her. And then you die. But then you wake up during a war, but you have no control over your new form. You are forced to kill your daughter, who has grown into a shinobi. You end up killing her guardian - your summon from your old mortal life, but it was his sacrifice. You come face to face with your love after all these years, but it's only to say goodbye.
