Holy shittttt.
I get it now. Across The Spider Verse is fucking phenomenal. A fucking masterpiece. My only complaint is I have to wait a year for what’s next.

oh yeah saw blue beetle last night and one million thumbs up. going into having heard it’s very tokusatsu and comic booky made it one million times better. goofy and stupid in fun ways. i’m so glad we’ve looped back around to comic book movies being like comic books: confusing chronologically and catered to fans willing to put up with wildly specific nonsense. also heck of a great job making a movie about gentrification and colonization out of the chaos of blue beetle lore and corporate blandification i genuinely had fun
#like it’s not the BEST done story about gentrification and colonization. but it’s a very interesting attempt at doing one in the dc universe#also ADORED how they did ted’s old tech i love love love that it was chronologically accurate and cheesy in the best way#of COURSE his tech is outdated he was a superhero TWENTY-THIRTY YEARS AGO!!#when mcu stuff went back in time they just retconned it to be cool futuristic sci-fi stuff too. i ADORE the idea that a) there WERE#superheroes in the last and b) time still passes! them being there shaped the world and influences the superheroes we have now!!#and SO glad to see DC finally capitalizing on their legacy heroes <- the one thing that stands them out from marvel#yeah this was a mediocre movie to the average fan. i think comic book movies should be. fuck blockbuster everyone movies#cbms should be wildly specific and about characters no one’s ever heard of to tell fun stories with them#also love the minimal level of integration with the rest of the dc movie verse#jaime went to gotham university and there was that one name drop of bruce wayne in an ad but SO happy no obnoxious cameos.#this is just another corner of the universe! it’s a coherent WORLD but that doesn’t mean the same individuals need to show up everywhere.#loved it. i know it’s not a great movie but i had so much fun from the moment i saw the intro talking about actual lore#it was 100x improved by what i already knew about jaime reyes and i know that’s a bad thing for non-aware viewers but fuck it. stop catering#to the audience that refuses to read comic books or put up with their tropes. cater to the people who are already here and love it#thank youuuuuuuuuuuu <3 also give people from the cultures superheroes represent more money to tell those superheroes stories . it’s great

Friendly reminder that the writers and directors planned to have Miles and Gwen kiss in this scene but scrapped it because it would feel too rushed.
I‘m so glad they did. Because of that change we‘re getting one of the best slow-burn, genuine romances in CBM history instead of a rushed "protagonist gets together with love interest“ romance.

still one of the best cbm decisions to have Patrick Wilson’s Orm look like classic Aquaman since Arthur is played by Jason Momoa, so they can still contrast each other

Unpopular Phase 4 & 5 Opinions
Quantumania is the worst Phase 4/5 movie. And it wasn’t even because “kang got beat by ants.” (I liked kang in this movie). It’s just that the Spy Kids aesthetic & bad acting & overall weird vibes just weren’t for me.
Love and Thunder is no worse than Ragnarok. I would argue that it’s better in a lot of ways, actually. I really liked it.
Taika Waititi ruined thor with bad humour all the way back in Ragnarok tbh, but y’all weren’t complaining about it then 😒.
BuckySarah is better than sambucky every day of the week.
The Marvels was a good ass movie & they’re one of my favorite teams in the mcu. I’ll never forgive cbm sites & online dudebros for killing the hype from the moment the film was announced.
I adore America Chavez & Kamala Kahn and I want to see them in everything. They must be protected at all costs.
Multiverse of Madness had shitty characterisation & basically just copy-pasted the ‘grief made me go off the deep end & hurt people, then I realised and stopped myself’ storyline from Wandavision… but Wanda was extremely selfish & apathetic to other people’s suffering from the time she was introduced in the mcu. MoM didn’t make her like that.
Wanda should’ve been looking for Vision (her actual real life boyfriend whom she spent years with irl) in MoM instead of the kids that weren’t even real that she spent like a week using as characters in her sitcom.
Making everyone forget Peter Parker wasn’t profound or poetic in any way- it was just frustrating and needlessly cruel.
I’m begging marvel to understand that heroes don’t have to be in constant suffering to be heroic & villains don’t have to sacrifice themselves to achieve redemption. Let characters heal and atone, you absolute weirdos.
What If…? is the most boring show ever. I’d rather watch Secret Invasion or She-Hulk.
Season 2 of Loki is, in a cinematic & artistic sense, the best marvel project period.
Loki season 1 was meh- more of a fun au than anything because his characterisation kinda sucked. Season 2 fixed it, though, and made it way easier for me to incorporate this version of Loki back into the larger mcu.
Having Steve stay in the past with Peggy was stupid af.
I don’t hate Peggy (or Captain Carter), though. I actually think she’s pretty cool.
I don’t really love Steve. He’s arrogant & they never really let him have flaws & something about him being a perfect metaphor for the American military industrial complex (and marvel painting that as a good thing) doesn’t sit right with me.
The Illuminati got done dirty and the only reason they went down so fast was because Wanda had all that plot armor.
I thought the retcon of having Wanda be “destined” to become the Scarlet Witch since birth was an annoying cop-out. Her powers originating from being experimented on with an infinity stone was way more interesting.
Loki & Wanda have almost the exact same powers.
Nebula deserved a bigger rule in killing Thanos & everything else moving forward.
I love Kathryn Newton but her acting as Cassie Lang was the worst acting I’ve ever seen in the mcu, like it was outrageously bad.
I’m glad Sam is the new Captain America and not Bucky.
The fact that Bucky probably isn’t gonna be one of Thee lead characters in the upcoming avengers movies feels sick and twisted.
Secret Invasion was actually passable until the G’iah scene at the end. That ruined it. And Nick Fury deserved way better for his solo series.
Kang is so much more interesting than Doctor Doom. I really hope they just recast him.
Carol Danvers does NOT deserve the hate she gets.
I actually disliked Carol until The Marvels. That movie made me a stan.
The way people treat Monica as Wanda’s little inferior pet creation or smth & then brag about it is uhh very sus.
I don’t like sylvie (bc she’s an amalgamation of 3 different comic characters- which killed any hopes of them appearing individually in the mcu, the creators used her existence to butcher Loki’s genderfluid rep, & she was written poorly) & I HATE sylki (bc it’s weird & unnecessary).
Marvel isn’t dead. I actually love where they’re taking things. But that’s just me.

X2: A Movie Review
This has been a good year for everybody's favorite mutants so far.
So far, we are halfway through X-Men 97, a sensational return for the original X-Men cartoon, picking up where it left off and blowing away expectations. Meanwhile, we are still three months away from the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, which will feature the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and possibly other surprises from the X-Men films released back in the 2000s, among other Marvel films from then.
With the success of X-Men 97 and the upcoming release of Deadpool & Wolverine, it makes sense to look back and celebrate the X-Men films to come beforehand. At the time of this writing, I have rewatched the X-Men (2000) and X2 only. X-Men: The Last Stand has not been reviewed yet, and X-Men (2000) was good, but X2 is the topic of discussion here, as it's not only better than its predecessor but one of the great comic book films to grace screens.
The last time I watched either X-Men film may have been as a kid during the 2000s. The rewatch all these years later proved how stellar X2 was, buried under the wave of Marvel films to follow throughout the 00s, 10s, and today. If you don't know or have forgotten, X2 introduces its main antagonist, Stryker, played by the brilliant Brian Cox; a man who threatens the existence of mutants with the proposed mutant registration act. After launching a full-front assault on Professor Xavier's school and after Magneto breaks out of prison, the X-Men, Xavier, and Magneto must band together to face a common enemy that threatens their very existence.
From the opening scene of Nightcrawler fighting his way through the White House to make it to the president, the film establishes more clearly than its first one how it has the sauce. Nightcrawler poofing his way throughout the halls and dispatching the guards one by one with opera music in the background is one of the best openings to a CBM. Overall, the action scenes here are a vast improvement over the first one, whether it's the opening scene, the raid on Xavier's school, or Wolverine vs Lady Deathstrike. While the first film's fight scenes were decent, the choreography harbors more dynamic action that contributes to an overall more enjoyable time.
The character work here varies across characters and performances. Ian McKellen has one of the best performances once again. While his role as the antagonist in the previous film was great, his partnership with Xavier, Wolverine, and others forces a compelling dynamic. Magnus breaking out of prison using the iron in a guard's blood was badass. Then, to see him forced to work with his enemies provided entertainment beyond belief. From there, unfortunately, it's a bit of a mixed bag from the other actors and actresses and their characters.
Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is iconic for good reason. He brought gravitas and an aura of savagery that was always entertaining to witness, whether here or in virtually any other film the character appeared in, especially in Logan. Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier is a tour de force in his own right as well, but it's the other members of the X-Men that bring apprehension. While I enjoy James Marsden as an actor, he brought nothing to the table as Cyclops, and reminded me why others for years have hated the Scott Summers character; Coinciding with his performance, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey isn't given many intriguing things to do. It's a bit infuriating when juxtaposed with the performances and stories told in X-Men 97. The X-Men and X2 spend too much time on a love triangle where only one-third of the people involved are engaging to watch on-screen. (Although if X-Men 97 focuses more on the love triangle after the time of this writing, this may age poorly, lmao.)
I liked Shawn Ashmore as Iceman and the scene of him coming out as a mutant to his parents. A decent allegory for a teen coming out as gay to their parents, and I think the scene, as well as Iceman/Bobby Drake in general, work well for the movie. Aaron Stanford's Pyro was also a fun slow-burn, watching him turn heel towards the end of the film. I'm really excited to see him return in Deadpool & Wolverine. Others like Rogue, Beast, Mystique, and Lady Deathstrike, to name a few, I would've liked to have more screen time to grasp these performances and their character moments better. Overall, X2 could've utilized some characters better, but some of the characters get so right and attributed to one of the quintessential 2000s CBM movies out there. There are a handful of iconic scenes to witness or reacquaint with in the first two acts. The third act may waver a little bit, but this is still a great film that warrants a rewatch to appreciate the X-Men further. 4/5.

What are your favorite aspects when it comes to Miles and Gwen's characters in the Spider-Verse films?
For Miles, I like how seriously he’s taken as a superhero, let alone Spider-Man. In the comics (Post Secret Wars 2015, and especially nowadays) people “little bro” him, if that makes sense. Villains, civilians, even editorial themselves don’t give him the same respect they’d give Peter Parker, someone’s always calling him “kid”, making him out to be an inexperienced rookie well on the fast track to getting himself killed, or going out of their way to establish that there’s another Spider-Man out there they can be counting on, whereas in Peter’s stories, Miles may as well not even exist. So in that vein it’s extremely refreshing for Miles to be portrayed as not only as NY’s sole Spidey, but the one that everyone counts on, and damn well better respect too. At least, I got that last impression when he outright told Peter not to call him kid, and outsmarted the spider-society in its entirety (bars) solely because they underestimated him. Watching the Spider-Verse movies gives me the same feeling as reading his Ultimate comics for the first time, so full of promise and untethered to an editorial office constantly trying to remind us what the score is and keeping his stories low stakes.
I also like his relationship with his parents, not because of the love, but because of the conflict that not only coexists with, but stems from that love. I feel Miles’ relationship with his parents in the comics, while loving, doesn’t even bother with introducing a little friction, a little conflict between these people who love each other and instead lay all the positivity extremely thick. It’s like a dream sequence where nothing bad happens, no one says or does anything they don’t mean or don’t like and there aren’t any misunderstandings. Which is just, completely unbelievable to me. Spider-Verse Miles’ relationship with his parents is 100% more interesting than the one in the comics because it feels so much more real.
For Gwen, I like how they perfectly maintain how much of a mess her life is. ITSV was mostly from Miles’ perspective, so her one awkward moment (“Gwanda. It’s African. South—African.”) doesn’t stand out as much as Miles literally tearing her hair out when hitting on her goes wrong. But as the indisputable deuteragonist of ATSV, we get to see more of her perspective, more of her shortcomings, more of the honest and vulnerable side to her that we didn’t have the time to see all that well in ITSV.
And for the both of them? Well, I like how their arcs perfectly entwine with how gone they are for each other, how they seek the comfort and understanding they can’t really get from anyone else just as they’re getting used to being tragically misunderstood. When BTSV sticks the landing they’re gonna be like, the best cbm romance to ever grace a big screen.

one thing that baffles me about comic circles is the concept of “best”. The BEST live action Batman the BEST ship for nightwing or whatever the BEST cbm the BEST writer etc etc etc. It’s this constant dick measuring contest. The same sentiment fuels the perpetual argument of “who’s the most powerful??” And idk man I think approaching something that’s supposed to be a hobby and bring joy through a lens of superiority can get kinda exhausting

This may be controversial around here but the more I think about it I might be more excited for James Gunn's new DC Universe than future MCU stuff on the whole.
Most of the projects in the "Gods and Monsters" lineup aren't overly exciting to me on paper since most of my faves from the comics or previous movies don't appear to be there, so I was kind of meh on the whole thing at first.
But this is the guy who made the two best CBMs of the 2020s so far (and it isn't close, either). The guy who stans Harley Quinn at least as much as I do and helmed her best movie appearance to date. The guy who made the Suicide Squad work. The guy who let all the Guardians live* and find new purposes in life without needing to be permanently punished for their pasts, while also not totally breaking up the found family, even if not everyone is going to continue the fighting. And he ended it on a literal dance party ending!
Now, he's not immune to the "redemption = death" trope that I'm really sick of but I get that it's gonna happen sometimes. And even some of those deaths he's helmed have felt more like happy moments than entirely sad ones. ("I'm a superhero!") But I definitely think his own history of messing up then being better comes into play here, which is great because it means he truly empathizes with these characters rather than seeing them as needing punishment all the time. This is a pattern I keep hoping the MCU will break but then it doesn't. (Again, except for Guardians.)
I think he's gonna make a lot of the heroes I'm not that excited about atm really appealing to me, and then do them justice!
*Yes I know he was involved with the decision to kill OG Gamora and her death ended up being a fridging to further Thanos, but I have a feeling had he done it in Guardians 2 like he was toying with it would have been more for her arc than anyone else's.

3.) Fantastic Mr. Fox
One of my comfort movies and favourite stop motion film, I love Wes Andersons work! And I wish he does more animated films like this one and Isle of Dogs.
4.) Mean Girls
Another comfort movie, I watched it at 9 years old and decided it's one of the films to ever and I was right

Hot take: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania may be the perfect CBM. Near perfection.
You may not agree if you don’t read comic books. This film will be very polarizing. Lots of folks don’t know what to make of it. There are lots of critics who are comparing it to other MCU films as they have recent Thor sequels but they are not paying attention to the right things. Maybe this film is not for them. Or you?
Stan Lee in his With Great Power documentary: “I want to do more. More writing. More movies. More lecturing. More everything. The problem is time. I wish there was more time.” This is the crux of Quantumania.
The dilemma of Scott Lang and Hope. Lost childhood of Cassie. Regret of Janet and Hank. Menace and banality of Kang. One supreme axiom that dogs the little guy, parent, teen, lover, super hero, and super villain alike, on all levels. Time.
Few understand this.
Least of which the critics of the 31st film in the MCU. The start of phase 5 is about time. Inevitability. Futility. Perspective. Cycle of life. Cause and effect. This is not your regular CBM. But it’s exactly like a good comic book story arc in the four color pages by Stan Lee and his peers from the early days of Marvel story telling.
Time is the ultimate currency. If you are Gen X like me, you think a lot about time, right now. The debates of boomers vs millennials and those upstart, digital native Gen Z kids are all around the fringe of a self importance debate. Gen X are the ones in charge of this story because it’s our place at the center and we are reflecting on being stuck in the middle as referees and self made protagonists who were never given recognition for our role in the first place. This is Kevin Feige. This is Scott Lang. This is Hope van Dyne.
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania is bizarre and strange and weird and alien – because humanity is alien here – and skewed perspective is the main foil in all of the character dev, relationships and the action itself. The commonality at play is empathy or lack thereof. Morals and best intentions vs failures and mistakes. Balanced vs imbalanced against time.
I loved this film and I’m excited for what’s next. Paul Rudd is a national treasure. Jonathan Majors is one of the most interesting actors out there. Make mine Marvel.
Excelsior!!
Did you see the latest Marvel film? What did you think?

I just find it interesting that everyone who is always concerned by Tom doing other roles never seem to watch all the other projects he’s done before and since he’s been Spider-Man. He’s literally never stopped working. If you care to watch him in other things, there’s a plethora of things you can watch him in. Devil All the Time, Lost of Z, Current War, Onward, Spies in Disguise, Cherry and TCR. He literally told his agent that he wanted a role like TCR and they got him that project, he is in a position in his life and career where he can take breaks, handpick projects and also still do Spider-Man. Fred Astaire is next. Paul King is attached as director. There’s a script and presumably they’ve been working on a new draft since the strike ended. It’s coming along, a casting announcement is probably imminent. And he’s still 27. He has done so much and still has much left to do. Can you guys just admit all the fake concerns is because film twitter decided they hated CBM and Tom became enemy number one to them for some reason and now you all have decided you know best although none of you work in the industry?
👏🏾 💯
All of this Anon. I totally agree.
When people come in here talking about how they want Tom to work with great directors, I'm like: "Ummm....... He already HAS".
Tumblr media
I can always tell the ones who are just echoing what they read/see on Twitter, and haven't actually taken the time to watch ALL of Tom's filmography post AND pre-Spiderman. 🥴
RE: CBM..... Idk why people hate on them so much?? They're just another film genre really. Like, who cares? Not every film is going to be geared toward you and your likes, and THAT'S OKAY! You don't have to like every film or every film genre out there. That's why there is variety on earth. It makes things interesting!

Thunderbolts existed in the comics way before Gunn's Suicide Squad, so what are you even talking about? Besides, you're wrong about that film doing well, that film did poorly in the box office.
No shit it existed. Do you think I believe that thunderbolts was just suddenly fabricated in 2021? I’m saying they’re bringing it to live action because of the fact that there’s been 2 successful suicide squad movies. Because even in the comics, the basics of both are the same, the government recruiting a team of former villains. And James Gunn’s TSS may not have been a box office hit, but it’s still regarded as one of DC’s best movies since TDK and has the highest ratings, equal to The Batman. Ratings that high and being one of the most popular movies amongst CBM fans is doing well, sorry.
Still, SS (2016) did amazing at the box office despite being a shit movie. And Marvel clearly knows that James Gunn is a talented writer and director and makes quality movies, considering he’s made 3 of their own biggest hits.
If you had reading comprehension skills, you’d pick up on what I’m saying here. If Marvel was putting actual effort into that movie and started to adapt a good, solid version of Thunderbolts, I absolutely would not be saying this. I’m saying it’s a cash grab because it seems like they’re throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks. When I realized they were setting up for thunderbolts, before any official announcements were made, I was extremely excited for it. But once I realized what they’re actually planning for the movie, it became clear to me that a part of what’s going on is they seen an opportunity to do what their competitor has twice. They want to have their own version of SS (2016) and TSS (2021), considering both have had huge success for DC. That’s a simple business strategy that every damn business does in some way, shape, or fashion.
The point is: because marvel has seen DC lay the ground in live-action, they know that people enjoy watching a team of villains. Marvel is relying on that fact and that they have huge name actors (Flo Pugh, David Harbor, etc.). So they don’t seem to be worried about actually creating a good story because they know a team of villains is enough to get people to watch, even if everyone hates it afterwards just like they have with Quantumania, TLAT, Secret Invasion.
Use your brain next time before trying to come in my inbox and tell me I’m “wrong”.

I think one of my favorite aspects from the tower scene is how confident Miles is. And it came off organically, not forced at all. He believed 100% in his soul that it could work between him and Gwen. And he was staring right into her eyes after saying it. And Gwen can't help but smile (even if she still believes canon stands in their way). Uncle Aaron would have been proud
What I love about the tower scene is how RAW it is. Neither Miles nor Gwen are beating around the bush here. They are very open when it comes to their feelings, at least in this scene. Gwen telling Miles that what they have is *different* from what she and Hobie have is the first sign for Miles that Gwen might have feelings for him. Miles then talks about how they are the same and are basically so reliant on each other because they can't relate to anyone else fully. Gwen then saying that in every universe Gwen Stacy falls for Spider-Man is basically her accepting and telling Miles that she has feelings for him. Miles is not stupid, he notices that. That little sentence gives him the confidence to move his hand closer. Of course we know Gwen doesn't want to risk it since, at this point, she still believes in Canon Events and believes her and Miles are destined to end in tragedy. The writing for these two and the chemistry they have is second to none in the CBM genre. If they stick the landing (which I 100% think they will) then this will go down as the best CBM romance PERIOD.

if orm lives and gets a happy ending in aquaman 2, I think he should be allowed to have his wife erin and son tommy in the third movie if it gets made. plus he’d have one of the best character developments a cbm character could have — going from a villain to an antihero to a malewife dad yup.
