Gail's Blorbo Showdown

On the contenders:

Parker is one of the five main characters of Leverage, a television show where a bunch of criminals play Robin Hood with the 1% and their victims. I grew up watching the show while it was still airing, and when I rewatched it for maybe the third time in 2021 I simply lost my mind and spent several months thinking only of the Leverage ot3, hitterhackerthief, all three of which are on this bracket! Parker is the thief. She's got her own traumatized background and is incredibly autistic coded, but both the narrative and fandom respect her strengths, refusing to fall into typical autistic coded character traps.

Percy Jackson is the titular character of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, a five book series I read as an itty bitty elementary schooler, and the love I have in my heart to this day for this sarcastic, clever, adorable child soldier is immense. He ended up appearing in basically every consequent book series Riordan wrote and gods, he deserves a break, but I cannot WAIT for the sixth book to come out. *What do you mean by implied canon?

Implied canon would be characters with a lot of hints in canon to a possible polycule, intentional or not - for example: aizo/yujiro/hiyori from honeyworks/heroine tarumono, where both boys like hiyori, and she likes both of them as well, and there's plenty of stuff to back that up even if canonically they aren't dating

Hello everyone! I’ve been having a lot of fun with participating in poll blogs for the last few weeks, and I wanted in on the madness! And silly me decided that this was the best topic for me! Shipping!

Another season, another Fukuran week! See below for prompts and details on Fukuran Week October 2023 - which is also the name of the new AO3 collection

This week-long event is dedicated to the ship between Edogawa Ranpo and Fukuzawa Yukichi!

Rules:

This is an 18+ event, meaning participants must be 18 years of age or older and nsfw themes are allowed and welcomed.

Dead dove content is ok, just tag appropriately

Fluff also ok!

No harassment of other participants will be tolerated. If you don't like what you see, either scroll away or block. Be respectful, we're all here to enjoy the event!

Submissions in any language will be accepted (Just know the mods may struggle a little to answer questions in other languages, but we will try our best!)

Guidelines/instructions:

Prompts are for each day of the challenge. There are two prompt lists, one sfw and one NSFW.

For each day you wish to participate, pick one (or more) of the prompts and create a fanwork inspired by it. You are allowed to mix prompts between the SFW and NSFW cards.

Wait until the day of the prompt to post your work (i.e. if you make a fanfic for a prompt listed for day 3, wait until May second to post to twitter/tumblr/AO3 etc.)

Welcome to the Polyam Ship Showdown! Following the grand tradition of @t4tswagcompetition, @polyamorous-swag-tournament, @magnificent-mlm-matchup and more you'll find on the @competition-list , we will find out, through a series of polls, which is the best polycule of them all!

General Thoughts

OKAY SO! Damn, what an episode. Really delved into Ford’s issues there 👀 got some bits of Sterling (cannot wait to see more of him ngl. he’s seems like the devil on Ford’s shoulder) Hardison and Eliot duo was iconic. Just two dudes trying to heist but panic horribly together lol. Parker was absolutely adorable (no notes, just me). It will be interesting to see how Sophie and Ford’s dynamic continues throughout this season bc they are in a rough patch 🤧 But I have high hopes

what made you ship it?

actually this is one of those cases of i shipped them by proxy for ot3 purposes. i liked their dynamic but when i watched jn initially i hadn't yet done my os rewatch and i was actually pretty normal about gary oak (as a kid he wasn't really a big fave or anything and i hadn't actively watched anything but the pokemon movies since middle school so). they definitely gave that same vibe as os pallet though like the "i have a crush on you i can't deal with" so i think i liked that dynamic :p

what are your favourite things about the ship?

ok so now fast forward to the great anipoke rewatch/watch (since i'd never seen the later gens before) of 2023. i got really unwell about gary. DJFGHJFKDDFHJDK but i'd been unwell about goh from when i watched jn the year before so it was...not difficult to begin drawing parallels. i think a lot of people point out how similar the shigegou dynamic is to the early shigesato dynamic and like. that's true and valid! but as individual characters, gary and goh have so much in common. gary's whole schtick is that he travels alone. he doesn't wait around for ash to catch up to him, necessarily. he has his own ideas of what he should be doing and how he should be doing it and mr "i've already got ten badges" here sure as hell isn't a slacker when it comes to proving how Awesome and Capable he is. we never, not once, see gary working as a team with anyone until pokemon chronicles (power play is something else to me. to be clear). by his own admission in jn, he wasn't much of a team player and that's a big part of why he pushed goh so hard about teamwork and collaboration (ok. he doesn't say this so much as goh kinda figures it out and gary doesn't actively deny it. but we the viewers who have known gary oak since 1997 know enough to say yeah he kinda sucked and put people down for his own sake, this tracks). they're both very goal-oriented but in a different way than ash is. i think where ash sees other people are like, a source of insight and inspiration, gary and goh both tend to see them as obstacles (ironically, ash is the first person they each didn't see this way)

also, they both have an interest in like. catching and researching pokemon. gary obviously likes battling too, but in i think showdown at the poke-corral, oak says that gary has caught over 200 pokemon. but he also cares deeply about them all (in jp he often calls his mons some variation of "partner," "honey," "sweetie" and we see him rotate his pokemon a lot - he doesn't have just one team, he switches them out a lot!). goh has a bit of a different approach, yes, but fundamentally i think the interest comes from the same place. and there is no doubt that they both care about their pokemon.

so like. i think those qualities are probably things gary sees, but even more than that, i think he sees a lot of his own worst qualities in goh: arrogant, self-absorbed, putting himself in a position where he is so afraid of people letting him down (though in gary's case, i think this is actually more being of afraid of letting other people down than the reverse) that he doesn't even try to do things that would make him happy or necessarily improve his capabilities as a trainer/research/person in general. but more to the afraid of letting people down point...i think it seems likely that initially gary sees goh as overcompensating for a fear of failure, like he does. but that's not exacty the case with goh, and through more work together it would become a lot more apparent that his issue is actually that he doesn't trust anyone but himself (and ash, by the time they meet - but even then, there are a lot of moments that suggest that trust is tenuous at the best of times). and i think gary would see that as a challenge, too. so idk i'm rambling here but there are just a lot of directions i think you could take with them that are super interesting. gary's position as being, like, an aleady fully-developed character who had to have his big moments of upset, etc. by the time he meets goh make it interesting. lots of opportunity to delve into their parallels and approach them as two people who actually fundamentally make each other better - goh by encouraging gary's own self-awareness and empathy, and gary by pointing out all the flaws in goh's logic because he used to think the same way.

is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

it's like me and 4 other people brain rotting (actually went into the tag the other day out of curiosity and discovered that even though they have over 50 fics on ao3, only 4 aren't a polyamorous or side ship kind of deal so. Yeah) so i don't think there are even any unpopular opinions to be had except maybe that it's a good dynamic and they deserve more love </3

Jonathan Sims is the main character of fictional horror podcast The Magnus Archives. My obsession with Jon Sims was relegated to my sideblog @queerastronauts, but was years long and incredibly intense. I have a thing for tragic figures, what can I say. My experiences in the fandom have soured me on the podcast, but my love for Jon Sims himself is strong and everlasting.

Power Polycule Showdown Semifinal Match Ups!!

Unstoppable Forces:

Sweet/Cap'n/K_K x Yoo/Han/Kim

SweetCapnCakes had only 3 nominations. The fans lost hope almost every round, believing their opponent to be too strong, and yet they made it through! Every round, they fought tooth and nail and won, over and over again! I'm inspired by the fandom's hard work to campaign for their robots. It paid off, you’ve made it this far!

YooHanKim, with 2 nominations, lost by a large margin in round one. But when they heard about the revival round, they showed their true power and united to make it to the quarterfinals, on a fateful rematch against the polyship that eliminated them on the first round. It was a close battle, but they won by 2% (which seems to be a theme with this fandom and polls?)

Immovable Objects:

Hardison/Parker/Eliot x Fred/Daphne/Velma/Shaggy

Leverage OT3, with 6 nominations, showed their strength by defeating one of the most nominated ships, at 14 submissions. They stood in place, undefeated, despite the multiple people in my notes having never heard about the show. Their power might've been underestimated by others in the first round, but they quickly proved to be a powerful opponent.

Mystery Gang, tied as the most submitted polycule at 14 submissions, stood their ground from round one, sweep after sweep. They had a close call in the quarterfinals, but even The Doctor couldn't take them down. Arguably the strongest contestant in this showdown.

Tomorrow, March 5th, at Noon EST the Power Polycule Showdown semifinals will go live. Who will be the ultimate Unstoppable Force and Immovable Object to make it to finals, so we can finally find out what happens when you put those against each other? I don't believe in physics but I do believe in silly tumblr polls. Stay tuned!!
