Man in a Suitcase: Sweet Sue (1.7, ITC, 1967)
"Oh, you're a detective! A cheap, prying, flat-footed peephole specialist."
"I'm not cheap."
#man in a suitcase#sweet sue#1967#itc#classic tv#robert tronson#phillip broadley#richard bradford#judy geeson#george a. cooper#david cole#peter blythe#ian mcculloch#jacqueline pearce#terence donovan#lewis teasdale#john clive#not an episode i really remembered anything about‚ which could be a bad sign‚ but actually this proves to be a very solid ep on rewatch#the third ep in production‚ but the shifted transmissions mean that really this is the first time we see McGill on an ordinary (ie. without#personal stakes) case (even Sitting Pigeon involved him being blackmailed into taking the assignment). it means we get to see a slightly#different side of Bradford's performance; he's more laid back throughout much of this episode‚ even clearly having fun in some of the#earlier scenes. of course it all builds to a typically violent showdown (a truly brutal fistfight and a classic bloodied McGill). Bradford#was deeply involved in arranging and producing these fights but developed a reputation for being a little too rough‚ worrying some of the#other actors; he was also responsible for the graphic makeup and wound effects that he apparently applied himself. a strong supporting cast#includes a young Geeson (just 19 and at the start of an impressive career) and Cole and Blythe make for good sneery public schoolboy types#albeit both are just a little old for the part (both in their 30s in roles clearly intended to be closer to Geeson's age). director Tronson#had already heard horror stories about Bradford but in the end the two got on very well (and both wrote kindly of the other in later life)#it was from around this time that Lew Grade (as well as American financiers from ABC) began to keep a closer eye on production‚ concerned#by reports of Bradford's difficulty and deviations from scripts. but it doesn't show here‚ in a well directed and punchily scripted ep

There's a natural goodness built into us all. We can step across that line into evil, or not.

in my reaper brainrot era because how on earth do you not stan a boy who was so defiant to the end that even as he died, he never begged or pleaded or cried, just calmly accepted his fate, because he was never going to give them the satisfaction of putting on the show they wanted, would never allow himself to be a pawn in any of their games, because fuck that and fuck them and fuck anyone who had anything to do with it

A Challenge for Robin Hood (1967)
"I love to see men wrestle."
"And after this, a hanging. There's no end to the entertainment."
#a challenge for robin hood#hammer films#1967#robin hood#british cinema#c. m. pennington richards#peter bryan#barrie ingham#james hayter#leon greene#peter blythe#gay hamilton#alfie bass#jenny till#john arnatt#eric flynn#john gugolka#john harvey#william squire#donald pickering#reg lye#a rollicking good time! pleasantly surprised by just how much I enjoyed this; surely one of the best of Hammer's adventure films#benefits from a rich and detailed plotting which explores not just Robin's background and noble heritage‚ but the larger Saxon and Norman#conflict and political landscape of the era. Ingham is a fine Robin (if difficult to accept as a hero; he played snobby assholes too often#in his tv guest spots) and Gay Hamilton is badly served by a script which renders Marian as little more than an object to be fought over#and rescued again and again‚ but the supporting cast of telly faces is immaculate. Arnett is a superbly snakelike Nottingham‚ all quiet#menace and unsettling looks‚ while dreamy Peter Blythe (sigh) is a perfectly spiteful and bitchy main villain. Eric Flynn (father of Jerome#and bros) is an earthy and likeable Alan a Dale (and was soon to play the lead in the BBC's excellent 1970 adaptation of Ivanhoe‚ meeting#another Robin Hood) while Leon Greene (who Hammer seem to have been considering for romantic lead status; he also did The Devil Rides Out#for them) is an amusingly blithe Little John. spectacular swordfights and a few moments of shocking violence: pure Hammer adventure fun

okay, i finally saw tbosas and here are my thoughts
1. i personally think it would have benefited from being split into two movies, one in the capitol, one in twelve
2. i feel like sejanus wasn’t fleshed out as well as he could have been. i absolutely adore him but in the movie he came across as more reckless as opposed to filled with righteous fury, and his death wasn’t as painful as i was expecting (let’s be honest i wanted to fall to my knees sobbing at his death and instead i was just ‘ahhh noooo ☹️’)
3. ma deserved to be better featured in the movie + she would have helped flesh sejanus out (also to show snow’s relationship with the plinths in general would have really hammered in HOW evil he is)
4. i wish we had been able to spend more time in 12, seen snows HATRED for mockingjays spelt out clearer and spent more time with the covey and see how close they all are and how much they genuinely did trust snow
5. changing the ending of the games with everyone dying from the snakes was a little disappointing but i did laugh when the students started chanting “get her out!” (also when dr gaul said she didn’t care if there wasn’t a victor vs snow demanding there has to be a victor, which 64 years later comes to bite him in the ass was MWUH chefs kiss)
6. critiques aside, every single actor was PHENOMENAL. not a single weak or subpar performance in sight, even characters without any/much dialogue were incredible and scene stealers (shoutout to irene böhm as lamina)
7. the sets and costumes were EVERYTHING, almost everything was exactly how i pictured and if it wasn’t plucked straight from my brain it was even better than i could have imagined
8. rachel zegler and tom blyth please marry me please
9. the part where marcus comes over and tells lucy gray that she can run and get out KILLED me, oh i could just feel my heart shatter in my chest
10. OH MY GOD lucky flickerman being an absolute scene stealer, what an ICON, i laughed at everything he said
okay that’s all i can think of at this moment. overall i did love it but i do find myself being all “the book was better 🤓” but very rarely do movies come close to being as good, and as far as adaptations go i loved it and could make peace with most of their changes
