Just a little rant
SOOOOO I've been thinking about something that I don't think is common knowledge.... In fandom, when a rich character has a medbay or recovery room why are we like not discussing where they store their meds? What kind of narcotics they have on hand? Where's their compounding suite for all the special IV drips that need to be made to order for those with weird biology? WHO HAS THE PHARMACY LICSENCE HUH??????? Who's sanitizing themselves, putting on fresh clean scrubs and making drugs to order? A lot of things come in powder form and have to be reconstituted before you can think about adding it to an IV bag or syringe.
sorry if this sounds beefy but Nurses and Doctors just order your shit if you go in to be seen. Techs fill the machines in each unit so they can pull from a locked cabinet. Pharmacy techs and Pharmacists are the ones double checking doses and drug compatibility??? We're the ones pulling the meds, making them if need be and sending them to each unit.
Do we think they'd trust someone not on the team to be making that kinda stuff??
Like. I know we get forgotten. Everyone talks about the nurse strikes but not about the pharmacy techs working conditions, and we ARE union, it just sucks majorly sometimes. Like NO ONE really knows or talks about how drs and nurses can't do their jobs without us.
Not sorry. They do stellar work for sure but there's an entire field to explore as fandom. There's questions no one thinks to ask! Getting a tech licsense is pretty easy and most jobs will do training on site once hired! I mean I'm approaching 2 yrs now in pharmacy, I dropped out of college... it doesn't seem hard to have Someone on a superhero team be qualified.

I don't think Americans truly understand how utterly nonsensical privatized healthcare is in our country.
Explanation, I work as a pharmacy tech in a big mail order pharmacy, most of my day is spent making phone calls. It's super boring which is why I never talk about it. This morning I had two phone calls back-to-back about patients who needed insulin.
Patient A
Fancy Insulin: $2700
Generic Insulin: $4
Patient B
Fancy Insulin: $570
Generic Insulin: $100
And I want to emphasize, these patients had the *same* insurance, it wasn't like one had a better insurance company than the other, it was the *same company*.
It makes absolutely no gosh darn sense whatsoever.

Dude.
I got a new position at work. One that I’ve been doing for months but there was no compensation for it.
I’m gonna make over $27 an hour. Holy shit. I got a fully adult job.
I’ve been making around $22 an hour, but I told management that I’d only take a $5/hour raise to take this job.
I’m in charge of all narcotics in a 300+ bed hospital. This is a dream come true. I

Well, Nonny, me having an extensive background in the medical field, I can assure you there is a cream or ointment at your local pharmacy that can help with that.

Crazy that I haven't seen anywhere talking about this. Over a week now and my pharmacy haven't been able to bill straight state medicaid or manufacture coupons. This is a nationwide outage!

CVS Pharmacy employees walked out in KC on September 20-21 because the status quo under-staffing was making it impossible for them to work safely. These non-unionized pharmacy workers are organizing a second walk-out on Wednesday, Sep 27, to force CVS and other large retailers to improve working conditions. The current chronic under-staffing is untenable. It is not safe for workers nor for customers.

PSA from a pharmacy technician in the US
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS consult with your pharmacist when you start a new medication. Doctors, especially general practitioners, don't always know the interacts and side effects of medications off the top of their heads but pharmacists do.
Older practitioners especially get caught in their ways and don't realize better alternatives are available. My doctor prescribed me an anti-depressant/migraine prevention drug but didn't realize that in such a low dose it's actually a sleeping aid. I spent almost four years wondering why I was so exhausted until my pharmacist asked why I'm taking sleeping pills.
Google manufacture coupons if you're ever buying a name brand prescription. Sometimes it's cheaper than a generic with insurance. If you have commercial insurance the pharmacy can either run the coupon separately or split-bill it with your insurance, depending on the coupon. There are coupons available for Medicare patients but none for medicaid (that I know of) or Tricare (military insurance).
Specialized doctor's offices like ophthalmologists (eye doctors) usually have samples of topical medications like eye drops and creams. Manufactures give them these samples to pass out to patients. If you can't afford it from a pharmacy, see if the practice will give you a sample.
If a medication is too expensive you can ask the pharmacist if there are any generic/alternative options you could bring up to your doctor on your next visit. Just remember, cheaper doesn't always mean better, some medications don't have genetic versions yet, and not everything has an alternative.
Doctor offices are notoriously slow at responding to pharmacies when we try to contact them. It speeds the process up a lot when patients also reach out.
If you need a medication refiled but are rejected by your insurance because it's too soon, there are overrides available. It depends on the insurance but they'll usually have exceptions for duplicate therapies, vacation, lost medications, incorrect instructions, and other circumstances.
I'll add more if I think of anything I've missed.

Bruh it was the best decision y’all, I’m going to study to be a pharmacy technician. I’m so excited. And more is that my ‘clinical medical assistant’ certification is actually a regular medical assistant certification. I can get a better job now instead of working at a Burger King. Like I can’t explain the amount of stress has just been released from shoulders.
