if we were to look at it through a racial lens, I do find it very interesting that Jupe’s wife is white. that the audience at Star Lasso are majorly white. that he’s basically robbing the Haywoods, a black family, of their horses to feed them to an alien creature for white people’s entertainment. that he was the token asian adoptee in sitcom as a child. the model minority. fitting himself back into a system that used and failed him as a child, so he can find some semblance of respect and power as an adult man, only to still be swallowed up whole.

Alfre Woodard on Crooklyn (1994) for R29:
“To my knowledge, we hadn’t seen a Black family that was just presented as we are in life, as human beings,” Woodard said. “I get told in Belgium by white Belgians ‘I love Crooklyn, it reminds me of growing up.’ Which is what happens when you tell a story from a specific point of view, you don’t have to mention race. You didn’t get up this morning like ‘I’m a black woman that wants a cup of coffee.’ You just want a cup of coffee. It was us as we are. Just us being fabulous, complex, funny, delightful, and making ends meet. And seeing, even within that story, that we’re not monolithic...The specificity is what makes it universal. Diversity is not the point; showing reality is the point.”

My Beautiful Laundrette: a young Pakistani man hires an old friend to help run his uncle’s run down laundromat in South London, rekindling their former romance in the process. Few onscreen relationships are as authentic as Omar & Johnny’s!

hollywoods aim by putting people in western period drama is to hide -to be more precise- sugar-coat the vicious truth about western history. white people were not "accepting", they were savages and the chances of a white aristocrat woman marrying a black man his very low. western cinema has used the white saviour complex method to manipulate history itself and present it to the audience giving them a different perception of history, a perception that benefits them. hollywood is using people of color as set dressing for their activism and this method ignores the millions of people that have suffered from the imperialism of the west. since the audience can recognise white saviour complex in cinema more easily now, they have alternated it with this method. it ignores the truth. also its historically inaccurate goodnight

Film & TV I Think About A Lot » The Fits (2015) dir. Anna Rose Holmer
You know it's gonna happen to us. Just thinking about what my sister said, you know? What do you mean? I just... I just wanna know how it feels. Aren't you scared? Yeah, but it doesn't matter. It'll happen to us anyway. It hasn't happened to any of the boys. Yeah, but we're not them.

City Of God: my favorite scenes in this Brazilian masterpiece focus on the dynamic drug-dealing duo of Benny & Lil Ze. Despite their distinctly different personalities, the playboy & the maniac successfully take control of Rio de Janeiro's roughest favela!

Mitski is in fact bisexual, she has some song lyrics about it in Cop Car. u right tho
Cop car was written for a movie. I think the lyrics are ambiguous and I wouldn't take it as an explicit expression of her being bisexual.
She hasn't said anything about her sexuality publically, so I think it's probably the kind of thing she wants to keep to herself.
Although, I would say in terms of sapphic lyrics, I would have picked Suzie Save your Love. I don't know if she wrote it, but I think it's explicitly about being in love with your friend who keeps going back to their shitty boyfriend. As I bisexual I love her music and find relatable nuggets in it to my own bisexual experiences, but I think that might just be a testament to her talent for expressing certain feelings in her music and making people feel known. I don't think I would feel any differently about her if she came out as bisexual. I don't think it would matter because she is already guarded about her personal life. It's not like she's going to start dating publically. God I hope she doesn't. Can you imagine? Olivia Rodrigo vibes where everyone would go "omg this song is about this breakup, how dare they do that?" cue fans attacking said person, cue people saying she shouldn't have written the song in the first place.
I don't really think many of Mitski's songs are strictly autobiographical to be honest. I find it a bit weird to see some of her fans saying things like "you're not allowed to relate to this song unless you are Asian" when she also writes songs about being an old person, and about horses. I think she just writes what she wants to tbh, I don't think it's worth trying to figure out what is autobiographical and what is not. I suspect more of her older songs are more autobiographical, but then I feel like she writes stories based on emotions she wants to convey, and those stories aren't themselves true.
