In Defense of the Other Teens
Hello besties :)
SO how about that last episode huh? I've certainly seen a lot of interesting takes and cool art and all that come from it!
And I'm... Here to offer my two cents.
Alright y'all, a few things before we actually get into the meat of it. First, this is a long post. Like, even by my standards this post is pretty fucking long. I hope that I'll be able to keep you entertained throughout at the very least, but maybe grab a cup of tea or coffee or the like before venturing under the cut.
Second, my stance on things will become pretty clear I think fairly early on, if you haven't already put two and two together from the title of this post. That said, there are some fairy bold claims I'm gonna make here, and the fact of the matter is some of them may very well be disproven as soon as today's Teen Talk drops. But I wanted to get this out beforehand, partially as a show of faith in a certain someone, and partially cause honestly I think it's good to practice giving oneself room to be wrong about things. That said, there are still many other points that I think remain important regardless of what we find out next episode (or in teen talk), and I hope you'll find those interesting as well.
Next, honestly, the first few chunks of this little essay really start out as more of a rant/vent than a tight analysis, and I kinda start things in a weird spot if I'm being frank with you, so maybe just try to bear with me for the first few parts, ok? They're still important for the bigger picture I'm trying to paint.
Finally, if I come off as a little extra salty and sassy in this one, I am, but I *promise* it's all in good fun. :)
Alright, so let me tell you my thoughts about Lincoln.
You know what I think? What I honestly, genuinely think? Linc is the most selfless of the teens by a long shot. Like, there's literally no competition. Enough "all he wants to do is help other people and all they ever do is betray him" with respect to Mr. TalkedGrantIntoAPanicAttackThenLeft and more appreciation and recognition for Lincoln Li SayHiToYourDadForMe Wilson, I'm begging you. I could sit here and start listing examples of Linc's selflessness to you for a good long while, but really no set of examples could better illustrate what differentiates Linc from the rest of the teens than this exchange:
**
Scary: "Chosen one…""
Jodie: "Bat’tholemew, we don't use those words."
Scary: "Somebody they wouldn't expect."
Taylor: "It's me. It's got to be someone that they don't expect."
Scary: "Yeah."
Taylor: "Yeah."
Scary: "It's got to be somebody who's really earned—"
Taylor: "Somebody who’s really earned—"
Scary: "—the respect."
Taylor: "—the right to... And all the knowledge of all the animes together…"
Scary: "Somebody with more knowledge than anybody else."
Taylor: "Someone with— who knows what to do. S… "
Scary: "Somebody who knows what to do to step up."
Taylor: "Somebody who can step up and be the chosen one."
Scary: "And be the chosen one."
Link: "Hey…"
Normal: "Guys, I think… I might be the chosen one…"
**
Yes, funnily enough, it's Linc's absence here that says a lot about him rather than his presence.
What's more, I frankly just don't think it's fair that Linc can do *so much* for the people around him but the *one time* he decides to do something that (seemingly) goes against Normal's plan, it's depicted as some ultimate act of betrayal or Linc "giving up". I feel like we significantly understate how much the other teens *have* done for the sake of Normal's plan (seriously, are we actually gonna ignore Linc stabbing his leg on a candy cane- TWICE??), and how much they've lost in doing so. If every time they fuck something up undoes everything they've sacrificed or done right, well, that's quite the negativity bias!
So why don't we talk about Linc's decision, actually. Did we just witness Lincoln finally snap? Has he given up on Normal's plan to help the doodler? Has he given up on using empathy? Did Lincoln Li Wilson choose the easy option? I would say no! No to all of those! And I think especially upon a relisten of the final moments in the last episode, Linc's train of thought when he breaks the pic is actually quite clear. And yes, this is about Linc showing empathy towards Scary, but I want to talk about the actual implications of that a bit further as well. Let's start by looking at the final bits of dialogue leading up to the breaking of anchor:
**
Linc: "Scary, what are you even doing?"
Scary: "You gotta destroy it"
Linc: "We can't- you just heard the Doodler's gonna make the world worse it's gonna kill we just gotta find something, why do you have to destroy it-"
Scary: "You don't know that!"
Linc: "I mean you don't know it's not that way we can find another way to destroy it"
Scary: "No, Willy said that it's easier to control if we destroy the anchors"
[ANTHONY EXPLAINS THE SPECIFICS OF WHAT WILLY WOULD HAVE TOLD SCARY]
Linc: "Well we're not gonna do it that way okay, come on like, the easy way is-"
Scary: "Who died and made you the leader?"
Linc: "The easy way is usually the bad way right? Sometimes the better thing is harder."
Scary: "This is easier what you're just gonna tell the pic 'Oh I love you I'm so nice to you' and it's just gonna give you all its secrets that's not how life works."
[LINK TRIES SAYING I LOVE YOU TO THE PIC AND NORM EXPLAINS THAT HE ALREADY TRIED THAT]
Linc: "Okay well like you're right it's gonna be hard but- I know it's not a person but I don't want more people to die we've already killed enough people like can you just do one thing with us and just try to find a way to make this-"
Scary: "The Doodler is gonna kill more people you're not seeing the bigger picture!"
Normal: "What no, Linc don't listen to her!"
Scary: "Listen to me!"
[AND THEN LINC SNAPS THE PIC]
**
Okay there's... A lot to unpack here. I'll start by pointing out what I think are a few key things to take note of:
- Linc is seemingly adamant on choosing the empathetic route and not letting any more people get hurt
- Linc affirms that sometimes the harder route is the better one
- Scary rejects the notion that simply saying "I love you" or otherwise being kind in words could actually do anything
- Norm says "don't listen to her"
- Linc's decision to break the pic only occurs after Scary says what she does (above point), seemingly in conflict with what he himself said only moments prior about not taking the violent route.
What I think needs to be understood about Linc is that, more than anyone in the group, Linc's decisions are calculated. Yes they often catch us off guard (seriously the amount of times Linc has done something that's made me actually gasp in shock is a bit crazy), but once the dust has settled, his decisions are always clearly consistent with who Linc is as a person and his philosophy, and accordingly, never come from a place of selfishness. The humor of it aside, when Linc says that he never misses any shot that he takes (:( Can't find the exact quote), he is entirely correct (and admittedly while I probably should gather various examples to show you what I mean, Linc swapping places with himself and Nicky really is the most perfect demonstration I could possibly ask for, as it showcases both Linc's aforementioned selflessness and how Linc's seemingly shocking decisions are never actually accidents or executed with uncertainty on his end). Try to keep these above points in mind as we move forward.
Next, let's consider the pros and cons for Linc of breaking or not breaking the pic, as seen from Linc's perspective. I suppose the general impression I've gotten thus far is that many people seem to be interpreting Linc breaking the pic as a likely (or sure) sign that he has "given up" on Normal's plan, and given in to choosing the "easier" route. This, I perhaps a bit boldly argue, raises a number of questions and ultimately implodes in on itself as an interpretation after even a brief consideration of them. At the most basic, and perhaps least interesting level, it's not like it would be that hard to search a little bit for some demonstration of love (especially with a certain pair of will-they-won't-they partners not too far away... Though I feel like the pic also could have been interesting as applied to some of the other characters around right now? Anyways...) You could say then, that maybe Linc simply doesn't care about using empathy, and has ultimately lost confidence in Norm's plan by this point, so he takes the path of absolute least resistance cause, well, whatever. But wait, didn't Linc *just* say that they weren't going to do things that way, and that he doesn't want more people to be killed? (You might say then that he thinks Scary has a point on "not seeing the bigger picture" and believes that choosing violence here will result in less deaths, but frankly I just don't think there's anything promising or compelling enough about Scary's argument here for Linc to have any real reason to believe it, all the more so given Willy’s involvement). Are we to think, then, that Linc changes his mind purely on a whim, and a whim influenced by Scary of all people no less? Frankly, I see this as a severe underestimation of Linc's strength of character, and this is where we really do need to consider the degree of calculation and confidence that goes into Linc's decision making and risk taking. What I'm saying is, Linc simply doesn't fall victim to selfish impulses that way (and within the group this is a quality unique to him!). Moreover, even if Linc might have his doubts in Norm and his plan, he still has significantly more reason to go with that than to listen to Scary. Seriously, Linc has every reason to not listen to Scary here. When it comes to what Linc cares about the most, Scary has without a doubt harmed Linc more than the Doodler ever could (The significance of Tony Pepperoni being stabbed in Linc's home in front of his dad  c a n n o t  be forgotten or understated!!!). Even if Linc didn't care at all about showing empathy to the Doodler, if he were acting purely out of selfishness he would still have more reason to do so if only because it means not giving the satisfaction to or otherwise helping Scary (and Willy).
But Scary is confused, and Scary is lonely, and from her perspective she probably does feel betrayed. We (and Linc) are given some important information regarding Scary in this episode. Firstly, we get a glimpse into how Willy has twisted things and convinced her that violence is the better option (not because it's easier per se, but because more people will apparently be saved in the long run). Second, Linc finally understands what Scary needs... Or at least what she doesn't need. Specifically, he understands that simply saying "I love you" isn't enough. He understands that Scary will never believe it no matter how many times it is said, and that to really prove to Scary that she is loved and get through to her, he needs to show her, has to prove to her that, despite everything, he is still on her side.
Linc, I dare argue more than any of the teens, has so much reason to leave Scary behind. But he understands her now, and, against Normal's wishes, listens to her. In a weird way (if I'm not dead wrong about this whole empathy thing), this kind of is Linc's "throne of the doodler" equivalent. It would be so easy to not break the pic, to not choose to (help and) empathize with Scary after all the pain she has caused him, but that's not the kind of person Linc is, and I hope the points I raised earlier make that reasonably clear.
So no, I don't think Linc chose the easy option. I think he believes himself when he says that sometimes the harder route is the better one, and followed through on this when he took his shot.
Sincerely, if you think the Doodler is just a scared teen deserving of empathy and sacrifice and making tough decisions, but Scary isn't, then I think you've missed the point. The Doodler is just acting out and needs help, but when Scary or Linc break an anchor through violence (be it violently empathetic or not), we give up on them? We hope for Normal to abandon them when they're hurting and depict it as deserved or even righteous? I can't get behind that, I'm sorry.
Furthermore, whereas Norm would certainly be justified in feeling concerned for the Doodler's sake if Linc's actions count as an act of violence, apart from that like, if Norm chooses to interpret Linc reaching out and showing support to someone as lost and alone and in need of help as Scary as a personal attack against him, either as a betrayal of their friendship (Norm is very jealousy-prone we’ve known this from the start!) or as a direct attack against Norm's perfect little violence-free narrative that lets him be the hero regardless of who gets left behind wait does he actually just hate Hero cause of her name hm, then that is, respectfully, completely a problem with him, and not with Linc. I think if Normal actually snaps from this, then his entire philosophy of choosing empathy is based on a lie, and Norm just wants to follow the narrative that allows him to be the hero on paper, so that everybody finally loves him.
Well that's a bit harsh huh. Believe it or not, I'm genuinely not trying to throw Norm under the bus here. But... I am trying to expose his flaws and shortcomings in relation to the other teens. This is important moving forward, because in refusing to seriously acknowledge the fact that Norm, while still having plenty of good in his heart, is someone who can be quite self-centered, and ultimately cares about being well-perceived and loved first and foremost, we become blind to the ways in which Norm, like Scary, is vulnerable to future instances of manipulation. That bit on appearance vs. true compassion isn't mere interpretation, by the way, Will has stated this quite clearly in episode 27 of teen talk (and in general I'd really rather not rely on that kind of bonus content in these sorts of posts but, well, it's hard to ignore this):
**
Will: (In reference to Norm's scene in the pride layer) "I feel like I understand Normal better now, like a kind of darker side of his psyche that's different from Henry... Like Henry's very concerned with being a good person but I don't think is super concerned with whether people like him or not, whereas Normal is like a little concerned with being a good person but *mostly* concerned- it's two different ways to solve love [he explains what it implies for Henry], the other is 'if everyone else likes me, that means I can take that in as well'."
**
I need to stress that I am not trying to imply that Norm is anywhere close to being a bad person, btw. Normal, like everybody else, has his flaws, but has proven that he has plenty of good qualities as well. What I *am* trying to imply is that Norm does have a tendency to put himself at the center of things, and is from a more meta standpoint benefiting from a narrative that puts him at the center of things (more or less guaranteeing that he will be seen as a hero of sorts no matter what- evident even in how fandom largely depicts him vs the other teens), and I'm just saying that if ever he found himself in Oakvale by some chance he might really appreciate the enforced anti-violence initiative put in place by the town's noble leader who really just gets him and praises him and-
I know (almost) nobody wants to hear this, but if Normal actually had a villain arc, it would most likely consist of him falling down the same path that Barry did. Barry was a hero, on paper. And the people around him certainly saw him as such, and loved and accepted him in some sense of the word, which is what he truly wanted at the end of the day. And he got rid of all the violence!!!
But none of that makes Barry a good person.
*sniff sniff*
Hey... Has anyone else noticed the distinct lack of stinky weebs in this post?
As much as I myself am a bit more interested in the Linc side of things right now, I do need to talk a bit (or a lot) about Taylor too. My little guy! You haven't even had a proper, serious character arc yet and people have already decided that you don't have a shot vis a vis the upcoming anchors, despite easily being the most emotionally resilient and stable of the group. You know what, I'm gonna throw in most loyal too. If you'll humor me...
Taylor may not be the most empathetic of the teens (in fact, he may very well be the least), but this doesn't mean he doesn't care, and doesn't mean he isn't kind in his own way. What's particular about Taylor's brand of loyalty compared to the other teens that I think might make it a bit easy to overlook is that it while it is very strong, it tends to be reserved only for the people he chooses to call his friends (oh, and his mom!). There's no question of Taylor's choice to disregard what Nick tells him and go back to save Linc from the FBI, it embodies some of the most fundamental parts of who Taylor is as a person. Which I guess is to say that, there are ultimately only so many people Taylor chooses to have in his circle, but those bonds are extremely important to him, and he really is ride or die about them. I think that this aspect is most obvious when looking either at Taylor's relationship with Linc or Cassandra, but also with Hermie actually! Oh, and similar to the example with the FBI, Taylor's response to the whole Tony situation is perfectly consistent with this aspect of his character as well. Tony was not part of Taylor's circle, not someone he chose to let himself get attached to (because when Taylor gets attached to someone, it is indeed a very deliberate choice), so no, he's not gonna care that much about Tony's death. But he is bothered by Scary's betrayal. He is bothered because, even if they weren't the closest, Scary was, I would argue, still part of Taylor's circle. And yes, he is bothered by Linc leaving him alone in the last episode for the same reason, except that in this case it's probably worse actually. I know I'm straying pretty far from the original topic here, but still I think it's worth exploring the interesting position this puts Taylor in going forward, especially with respect to Nick.
("Seriously baba when did this become about Nicky literally what are you talking about right now?")
Thus far, Taylor has made it very clear that no, he is not going to allow Nick to be someone he becomes attached to. There's a risk, in loving and becoming loyal to someone as strongly as Taylor does, and Nicky has not yet proven himself to be a risk worth taking. So what happens next? Nicky is (finally) around after all, so what might the future hold for little Taylor? On the one hand, Nicky's "words of advice" might begin to get through to Taylor, which could leave him in a pretty dangerous position. Taylor takes a big risk every time he lets someone in (everyone does but Taylor more than all the others because of how fully he loves and trusts and protects, is what I'm saying- er... He's a lot like his dad that way actually!), so what if Nick convinces him that nobody is worth that risk, and that everyone you hold dear will ultimately betray you? Well, I think we'd be left with a very lonely Taylor! Conversely, what if Nicky decides to prove himself worthy of Taylor's love? What if Taylor comes around and lets him in? ahaha shit I feel like there's a bad joke to be made about Taylor keeping his dad at arms length and his dad not having any arms right now god fucking damn it what even is this post. Will Nicky be able to maintain that trust? If he abandoned Taylor again, after Taylor has allowed himself to become attached (or if something happens to Nicky cause lets face it horrible things tend to happen to Nicky), I think Taylor might finally have a hard time getting back up.
What the fuck was I talking about? Oh yeah, so I guess going back to Norm, on the one hand, I guess on the more extreme end Taylor could actually take Linc's actions very hard, in which case I actually could see him sticking with Norm as an act of self-preservation. That said, I don't personally feel that this will be the case, that Linc is still ultimately in Taylor's circle, and accordingly Taylor's loyalty towards Linc will persist, albeit perhaps with a seed of doubt sewn at the back of his mind. And I don't think in that case that it's fair to frame this as Taylor betraying Normal? As others have pointed out, Norm frankly just hasn't really earned much in the way of Taylor's friendship. Really, as far as I'm concerned, Taylor doesn't really owe Norm much of anything at all. From the very beginning Norm has made it clear that he doesn't particularly care for Taylor, and ultimately has let his own jealousy and desire for attention (especially Linc and Hermie's attention) get in the way of ever really getting to know or appreciate Taylor beyond the surface level. Would I call it betrayal for Taylor to choose to continue to support his best friend instead of the guy who told him that anime isn't real? No, and I think the double standard is pretty obvious if we consider the reverse. That is, if Taylor chose Norm over Linc, after everything he and Linc have been through, would we be framing Linc as the victim of some grand betrayal? I genuinely don't think we would, at least not to the extent that we would with Norm. I suppose I'm saying all this, because well as aforementioned I just find there's been a lot of undeserved cynicism towards Taylor, and I think a lot of it does genuinely come from Normal's privileged position within the narrative as its de facto "hero" and what is most convenient for maintaining that image (and when I say "hero", that does include "righteous villains" who "deserve(d) to snap", just so we're clear on that).
Hmmmm I kinda wanna talk about Taylor and Normal as each other's foils but this post is getting a bit long isn't it... *Sigh* Not today, no, not today.
......Okay but still I have to say that if Taylor actually does finally get his "main character moment" I actually think that would be a great opportunity for Norm to acknowledge, reconcile, and learn to cope both with his jealousy and the parts of himself that are self-centered. Conversely, if Taylor does for one reason or another stray a bit too far into the habit of keeping people at arm's length out of fear of abandonment, betrayal, or the like, I think he could learn something from Norm too (having trouble phrasing exactly what I mean here, so perhaps I'll save the full notion for another time!)
So that's... Yeah, I think that's the most important stuff. I debated on sort of elaborating on examples of Norm's major character flaws, but despite everything my intent here was first and foremost to offer a "defense of the other teens" more than anything else. Though I will say that I think there is something to be said about how Normal's self-centeredness gets in the way of his ability to actually help those around him (Grant and Taylor both being great examples in "The Staircase"), how this contrasts with Linc's willingness to actually listen to and figure out what Scary needs in this most recent episode, and accordingly what Normal could potentially learn from Linc about not just choosing the route that's easiest for you.

Do you have theories about what Maya did to Fisk in Echo’s finale? Also, do you plan to write more? I’d love a sequel of your AU where Fisk buys Matt from an abusive husband.
1. Thank you for interest in that AU. I won't say I'll never add to it, but I don't think I currently have enough ideas to continue. Maybe one day. Never say, "Never." But I am writing on another FiskMatt fic right now, if you're interested in it. I just hit a bit of writer's block, but I finally finished the next chapter. Should be up soon.
+
2. You mean in the final confrontation when Maya used her new healing powers (the MCU will do anything but give Maya her comic ability) on Fisk? I do, yes! I guess you could almost say it was like a therapy speedrun. Hahaha.
I have Thoughts on a lot of how they wrote Fisk in Echo (some good, some bad), and I may make a larger post just to get my thoughts out of my head. (Instead of texting my friend a lot.) But I was happy with the choice they made to have Maya challenge Fisk emotionally instead of physically. She didn't want to kill him (again), but instead heal him from past pain, like her mother's spirit did for her.
It makes me think of this bit from an X-Men comic. (Don't mistake me for someone who knows a lot about X-Men. lol. Just a few things.) Pietro's daughter, Luna, has the ability to alter people's emotions. She think she is helping pop-pop Magneto (I refuse retconning that he isn't Wanda/Pietro's father) by making him let go of the negative and traumatic emotions associated with his past. But Magneto does not want to be "saved" from that pain and anger. It belongs to him and is a driving force in everything he does.
Tumblr media
That but with Maya and Fisk.
She still cares for the good parts of him she loved, and she wanted to be the bigger person and help him instead of hurt him further. I think it might even be empathetically motivated. It felt good when Taloa healed Maya from her emotional pain, and she thought it would help Fisk to do the same.
So when Fisk went on about how the trauma of an abusive childhood shaped him and motivated him, Maya thought if she could remove those negative emotions and get him to embrace her, let go of the hammer/violence/pain, it would help Fisk be less inclined towards evil in the now. In a sense, it might "cure" him.
But like with Magneto, it's not what Fisk wanted. He needs that anger and violence to be who he is. He doesn't want to be saved from it, not even for Maya. That's why he screamed, "I am not who you want me to be!" (Sad line, btw.) As if she wants to scrape away the "bad parts" of him and leave behind a better version. Fisk denies that he is or can be that person. (We love self-aware characters.)
It's not explicitly confirmed in the psychic vision of his childhood bedroom (*chef's kiss* for that choice of setting) if he does relinquish the hammer to her. The scene cuts away to reality. But you kind of get the sense that maybe he did, given his reaction.
Tumblr media
I love how genuinely unsettled he appears for the rest of the episode. Like the ground collapsed beneath his feet, and he's trying to reconcile what his own emotions mean anymore.
Sitting in his plane, distractedly rubbing his fingertips together, as he is wont to do in times of unease. (Can't gif right now.)
Tumblr media
So I'm not completely certain if Maya "turned off" the origin of all his anger, but it does sort of feel that way, right?
I don't doubt he'll once more be the unhinged anger man we love when we get to DD: Born Again, but I would love to see a small character arc where Fisk has to forcibly retake his rage or else lose all efficacy. (Something legitimately dangerous when you have as many enemies as he does.) I think it could be really, really good if they follow up with something like that.

Tony: time to have blossom dress as her favorite character
Sam: your 7ft tall walking Venus fly trap???
Tony: yep! Aubrey 2. She is gonna be the prettiest girl
Blossom: *drooling acidic blood aiming at sam*
Sam:....I feel fear
Bucky: *drops several dead rabbits and couple of frogs* relax, she is hungry *throws a rabbit in the air watching her eat it*
(Basically, my au/headcanon of Tony is that he gardens. Uses gardening to calm down, think, and it is his happy place besides the lab. He grew a large Venus fly trap, named Blossom. She is a funky little plant. I'll be writing a centric story about her. It'll be a way to have sam and Tony bond. Lol)

wilson’s probably the clumsiest at first glance, and gets nervous during romantic situations, but he’s kind of a pervert. or maybe kinky is a better word even though both apply. he’s got a high sex drive and a dirty mind, it’s just that he hasn’t had the chance to connect with anyone that can satisfy his needs lmao. his ideal partner would be willing to show him the ropes (lol) and eventually he would return the favor in full. the type of guy to have a bunch of dirty fantasies but also commits make them a reality in the bedroom, or at least as real as his partner is willing
annnnnd in the direct opposite direction is vezalius who is the definition of fake it til you make it. he’s very charismatic on his own, and once he wants to flirt, he’s super smooth; it’s just that if you look into his thoughts they’re all jumbled and panicked screaming. poor guy is emulating the tropey romances he’s seen in movies and video games, so once someone bounces the flirty energy back and he doesn’t have a good line prepared, he’s at a loss for words… when someone undermines him he likes to savor how out of his depth he is. he’s a romantic at heart. ironically he’s kind of vanilla but definitely likes kinkier scenarios in concept rather than practice. he’s willing to try a lot, though, as long as his partner is just as willing to guide him and reaffirm that he’s doing just fine as he is
it also seems like vanta totally understands romance but he’s just as clueless as the rest of the guys. the thing is that while wilson gets flustered and zali short-circuits, vanta’s just chill! he has no idea what he’s doing, but it’s fun, and he’s here for a good time anyways! so even when he flirts back, it’s earnest and confident. the bedroom is a whole other story, though. he can turn into a stuttering, moaning mess so quickly it’s almost like he’s a different person. he likes to chase his high especially with edging, it’s just that everything feels so new and good that he still needs to improve his stamina. at least he’s into overstimulation as well

technically an x reader but love interest isn't in the story? lol idk what to make of this.
WARNINGS : none! just peter being annoying lol
─────────────── ✦ ───────────────
YOU WERE JUST TRYING TO WORK WITH THE MOOD SLIME. While the other three were on a call, you were stuck with Peter Venkman. Sometimes it was bearable. Other times? Well, let's just say he was a bit of a flirt. An annoying flirt. Sometimes you can handle it, sometimes you couldn't. It just depended on how you felt and how patient you were at the time.
This day. You were not so patient.
You were conducting different tests for the slime. He was supposed to be helping. But all he did was pretty much hover over you with his poor flirtatious tactics. You weren't trying to give in to that behavior, as you deemed it immature.
"You're pretty quiet today, toots. You're not your usual self," you hear him say.
Toots. It never fails to make your nose scrunch up in disgust. That nickname made you feel like absolute garbage. But you dealt with it, mainly because you had to work with him.
"That's because I'm concentrating. It's kind of hard when you're blabbering in my ear," you tell him as you look at the cassette tape that's on the pool table.
You're looking at the Farewell to Kings cassette tape that's sitting next to the Jackie Wilson one that Egon has used prior for the experiment. It makes you wonder how it would react to Prog rock instead of the rhythm and blues.
"I wonder what it'll do for this tape," you mutter to yourself, before grabbing it.
You walk over to the radio, Peter following you like the lost puppy that he acted like. You didn't like being so close. It was a thing for you. The only one who could get that close to you was Egon. And right now, you were missing that company.
"Guess we're feisty today, huh?" Peter asks.
"Only because you won't leave me alone," you mumble, "You're supposed to be helping me. You could be doing something useful."
"I am doing something useful."
You close the cassette radio. Turning the tune to Cinderella Man. You turn back around to face him. Your eyes narrow before you walk away. He still follows you around.
"And what exactly are you doing?" You question, crossing your arms, "Because the only thing you have been doing is following me around like a lost puppy."
"I'm observing the mood slime, thank you very much," Peter answered, "I'm observing its reaction to you!"
You rule your eyes. "Oh yeah? And how is it reacting?"
"Very, very positive, toots," he tells you.
He tries to get closer, but you put your hand up so that he doesn't. You happen to raise the hand that had a ring on your finger. You had enough of his flirty antics and advances, and it was about time he knew that you were taken by one of your own colleagues.
"Sorry, toots," you say, almost mockingly, "I'm taken, Venkman. By Dr. Egon Spengler."
His eyes widen in shock while a smirk of amusement crawls onto your lips. His reaction was priceless to you. You just wondered what he had to say about it.
"Wait," Peter says, "He's engaged? Before me? How did Spengs get engaged before me?"
You finally put your hand down. "I dunno. Maybe because he doesn't creepily flirt. He's just himself," you say. You give a smile before walking away. Leaving Peter to think about his life decisions.
"I can't believe this," he muttered, before walking in the opposite direction.

After the fall of Shield you're stuck with Sam to look for Bucky while Steve teamed up once again with the Avengers to retrieve Loki’s staff and bring Hydra down once and for all.
They’ve been doing a good job apparently, unlike you and Sam that have had no luck tracking down your missing supersoldier.
Tonight you get a break, though, as you got invited to the party Stark is throwing to ‘celebrate the revels of victory’, as the Captain so normally put it in his text.
When you step out of the elevator you see Natasha on the couch talking to Colonel Rhodes and you walk over to say hi.
You chat a bit with them before Rhodey, as he told you to call him, goes to look for Tony and you make your way to the bar with Nat.
“So... how’s the testosterone filled team treating you?” you ask her while she makes you your favorite drink without you even having to ask.
“If you saw how much time those guys spend on their hair, you’d know you and I bring more testosterone to the table than them.” She tells you smirking and you laugh as you take the drink she hands you.
You look around you and notice Bruce making his way to the bar, so you turn back to Natasha and say “Here comes your damsel in distress.” and you wink at her as walk away, going to find someone you know.
You find Sam at the pool tables. “Hey, you just missed me kicking Steve’s ass.” he says when he sees you.
“Are you sure you weren’t just daydreaming, birdboy?” he tries to glare at you but ends up laughing with you, inviting you to play with him.
Obviously, you beat him and then suddenly he’s not in the mood to play anymore.
“Aww, are you mad I kicked your ass?” you coo at him and giggle at his pout.
You guys find Steve and start making your way to the second floor as he tells you about the team’s last mission.
“Sounds like a hell of a fight, sorry we missed it.” Sam says.
“If I had known it was going to be a firefight I absolutely would have called you.” Steve said.
“No, we’re not actually sorry.” you clarify ”He’s just trying to sound tough.” they both laugh with you.
“Yeah, we’re very happy chasing cold leads on our missing persons case. Avenging is your world.” Sam says as you make it to the overlook.
“Your world is crazy.” you add, seeing the whole room from your elevated point of view.
“Be it ever so humble.” Steve says, looking around too.
“You find a place in Brooklyn yet?” you ask after a moment of silence.
“I don't think I can afford a place in Brooklyn.” he says, glancing at you and you laugh.
“Well, home is home, you know?” Sam says.
You keep talking for a bit, then make your way downstairs where you meet new people here and there and chat with various Avengers, until eventually it gets late.
“Are you sure you don’t want to stay here tonight?” Steve asks you and Sam while you wait for the elevator “We have guest rooms.”
“As much as I’d like to see how Stark lives,” you start “we have an early flight tomorrow.”
“We’re following some breadcrumbs on our missing robot.” Sam clarifies at Steve’s confused look, making both him and you roll your eyes.
“Gotcha. Good luck.” he says directly to you, glancing at Sam that's now glaring at you both while you chuckle.
You say your goodnights and step into the elevator. You give Sam a ride to his apartment and then drive to your own, going to bed right away.
You begrudgingly wake up earlier than you would’ve liked to and meet up with Sam to catch your flight.
“Morning, sunshine.” he says, chuckling at your hangover state.
“Bite me, Wilson.” is all you can muster the energy to say.
“Why did you drink so much last night if you knew we had to wake up early?” he's not even trying to hide his amusement.
“It’s not how much, it’s what.” you say while sipping the coffee he thankfully brought you. “This is the last time I let Romanoff make my drinks.”
“Well, have a long flight so you’ll have time to sleep.” he says, letting you rest your head on his shoulder while wrapping his arm around you, stroking your arm as you wait for your plane to start boarding.
“Thank fucking god.” you mumble and you hear him laugh quietly.
You’ve gotten close with Sam since you started your manhunt for the Winter Soldier previously known as Sergeant James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes.
You already spent a lot of time together when you started with both Sam and Steve, but ever since the Captain started taking down Hydra bases with the Avengers all your time is now spent solely with the Falcon.
You fly together everywhere your leads take you, you spend days on end in each other’s company and you research together as much as you can about Bucky and Hydra in between missions when you’re home.
You’re basically best friends now.
Sometimes you think the only good thing that honestly has come from your search is your friendship with Sam at this point, but you’re trying to stay positive knowing how much this means to Steve.
You board the plane and, once again, rest your head on Sam’s shoulder as you fall asleep.
When you wake up, about an hour before landing, you notice Sam fell asleep too. You smile at his peaceful face, it’s always nicer to be around him when he’s not talking shit.
You finally land and get ready to spend a whole week in the middle of the Amazon with no reception and just Sam’s dumb ass for company.
-
“We really don’t get paid enough for this shit.” you say as you sit back in your seat with your eyes closed, your body almost giving out because of exhaustion.
“Now, that’s something we can agree on.” Sam chuckles, as tired as you and still a fucking ray of sunshine. How does he do it, you don’t know.
You’ve just spent a hellish week in the depths of the Amazon forest. You almost died about three thousand and sixteen times and all you have to show for it is scars and bruises and bites of insects the size of cats.
You didn’t even have time to clean up before your flight, the closest thing to a shower you had all week being when you fell into a river trying to help Sam out and then both of you almost fell down a waterfall.
A. Fucking. Waterfall.
You both basically passed out during the flight, being awakened suddenly after what felt like only a second by a flight attendant. Both of you were so startled that you almost pulled your guns on her.
You're already waiting in line for a taxi before it even crosses your mind to check your phone. Really, how much stuff could have happened in the seven days you were gone?
Turns out, a lot.
Like literally the robot uprisings and flying cities kind of a lot.
You were frozen staring at your phone when Sam’s voice finally registers as he says your name and shakes you a little, effectively taking you out of your daze.
“Have you checked your phone?” you ask, ignoring all his questions, still scrolling through the hundreds of texts from both Natasha and Steve.
“What the hell…” is all you hear from him a minute later and you don't need to look up to know his actions are now mirroring your own.
Before you know it you're entering a taxi and giving the address of the Avengers Tower while ignoring the skeptical look on the driver’s face once he takes notice of your disheveled appearance.
You're both on your phones in a second, you with Natasha and Sam with Steve, letting them know you're alive and assuring yourselves that they're okay too.
They greet you at the front door of the Tower, offering you to stay here for the night and this time you both accept.
After a much needed shower, you sit down with the rest of the team for dinner and they tell you in more detail about what happened.
Natasha waits until you're alone in her room to tell you about Bruce, and you do your best to comfort her resulting in both of you falling asleep in her bed.
The morning after Steve tells you and Sam that the remaining Avengers are be relocating to a new facility in Upstate New York, and asks you both to join the team.
Needless to say, neither of you need more than a second to think about it. Obviously you're both in.
You spend the next few months getting to know the Avengers both old and new while the new building was being restructured, and now here you are at the new Avengers Compound for your first day as an official Avenger.
Clint’s home with his family, you and Nat visited when Laura gave birth to little Nathaniel.
Thor’s got some big space adventure, Banner is still nowhere to be found and Tony’s on his way home to Pepper.
So now it’s up to Natasha and Steve to train the new Avengers: Rhodey aka War Machine, Vision, Sam aka the Falcon, Wanda and, proudly, you.
Steve and Natasha enter the room you were all waiting in and everyone falls silent, very eager to try you new suits and gadgets, courtesy of Stark Industries.
“Avengers…” Steve says, in his captain voice.
This is gonna be fun.

Requested by: none
Warnings: Swearing, angst, Violence, mentions of death.
A/n: If you don't like the warnings please don't read! PLEASE KEEP MY COMMENT SECTION AGGRESSION FREE! If you're comment is rude in any way, you'll be blocked. Ive been wanting to write a story like this for a while but haven't gotten around to it, my service is terrible so the app might just eat this lol
I know this isn't how Arrow went, but I'm just making my own thing out of it 😁
___
"Y/n, This is Slade Wilson." Moira said, holding her hand out towards a man on the couch.
Y/n felt dread wash through her as he stood, stepping over to her with a smile on his face. He firmly grasped her hand, the smile fading.
"A pleasure, Miss Queen."
"Let him go." Y/n had said, fear in her voice at the sight of Slade holding a knife to her brothers throat.
"Or what, little one? You'll attack me? Not likely."
Y/n and Oliver had fallowed Yao fei's directions to the crash site of a plane, only to be ambushed by a rather intimidatingly large man, Y/n had to admit she found him quite attractive.
"Fao Fei sent us!" She yelled, "I doubt it was so we could be killed by you."
He lowered his brows, staring her directly in the eye. No doubt trying to see if she was pulling a fast one or not. It took a few moments but he let go of her brother, but still didn't drop the knife.
"Who are you?" He asked.
"I'm Oliver Queen, and this is my sister Y/n."
"Sister? Funny, she looks nothing like you."
"I was adopted." Y/n grumbled. "Now who the hell are you, and why are you so fuckin special?"
"I'm Slade Wilson, and I have no idea why Yao Fei sent you to me."
Y/n threw her hands in the air, "Great, Ollie. This is great! We have an army attempting to track us down! We have an Australian jungle man with a sword and no way to get off this fuckin island! Yao Fei sends us here and none of us know why! This is just fuckin great!"
Y/n shook her head and sat on a nearby box. The men watched her, almost as if they thought she'd set the place a blaze with just one touch.
"What?" She asked.
"Nothing." Oliver replied, "But we need to get him out of there."
"Do you two know how to fight?"
"She does, I don't."
"Well then, I guess we begin your training tomorrow."
As time went on the three had gotten close, Y/n was surprised when Oliver learned how to fight. They had rescued Yao Fei, and met his daughter. Only for the poor SOB to get himself killed . Y/n and Slade had been attacked, Slade had gotten hurt and she had to drag him into a cave that was well hidden by large shrubs.
"Stay still, if I don't take this out then it will get infected!" Y/n yelled
"I'll do it myself!"
"The fuck you will!"
"It'd be wise to not argue with me!"
"Then shut the fuck up and there won't be an argument!"
Slade was almost shocked by her words, Y/n was never afraid to fight back or curse someone out, even if they were holding a gun in her face.
"It's not as bad as I thought, I stole some medical supplies on my way out of the camp."
"That's why you stopped?" He asked.
"Well yeah, can never have enough bandages and whatever else I grabbed."
Slade chucked, wincing in pain as she pressed a rag doused in alcohol against his wound.
"We need to keep moving." He grumbled. "They'll find us if we stay."
"We aren't leaving until night. Rest, Slade. I'll keep watch."
"Y/n? Are you alright?" Moira asked, gently gripping her arm.
"Y-yeah, I'm fine. Don't worry about me."
"Okay, ill let you two get acquainted while I grab us some drinks."
When the older woman left the room Slade pulled Y/n closer, his breath hot against her ear.
"What's the matter, little one? You look surprised to see me."
"You were dead, Oliver said he killed you."
"Tell him to check for a pulse next time."
"Here we are!" Moira cheered, bringing a tray of whiskey glasses and the bottle.
"I can't stay." Y/n said. "I have some very important business that-"
"That can surely wait until after we give Mr. Wilson a tour of the mansion." Moira interrupted.
"Yes, Y/n. Why don't you stay?"
"Stay." Slade whispered. "If you leave me and they find this place, I won't be able to defend myself."
Y/n hesitated, ready to run out and find her brother, but her feelings for Slade pulled her back to his side.
"Alright, but one more hour and I'm hauling you out of here."
It was Y/n who saved him, who fought and defeated all those men to get him back to the plane. But he still had eyes for Shadow, when he was healed they began sparring again. Y/n had to watch as the man she loved was being swept off his feet by the woman who wanted Oliver.
She felt sick watching them roll around and tackle each other. Oliver could see how she felt and it made him sad, she deserved to be happy after all she had been through. It was because of him that she was cooped up on this island, nearly being killed every day.
"I'm outta here." Y/n muttered under her breath.
"Where are you going?" Slade asked, grabbing her arm.
"I don't know, I'm gonna go disarm a mine or catch a fish. Just let go of me."
He did. Watching her disappear through the trees, oblivious to how she felt for him.
"What's her problem?"
Oliver shrugged and went back to fumbling with a stick.
Y/n walked through the forest, climbing a tall tree and watching a few soldiers sneak around. She jumped down and took them out, bringing them to a cliff and pushing their bodies off.
She could feel the anger building inside her, the pent up rage just wanting to get out. Y/n wanted to hate Shadow, but it wasn't her fault. She felt so controlled being stuck on the island, not being able to leave, having to worry that she'd wake up in a cage or not wake up at all.
"You have a lovely home, Miss Queen." Slade said, kissing her hand.
"Oh please, call me Moira."
"Of course, Moira. Unfortunately I have to be going, I look forward to seeing you again."
"As do I. Y/n could you see Mr. Wilson to his car?"
Y/n nodded and lead him outside. The trip was quiet, all she could hear was her heart pounding in her ears.
"Slade, why are you here?" She asked, watching as he got in his car.
"Five years ago I made you a promise, Y/n. Well I'm here to fulfill it."
Y/n pointed a gun to his head, tears running down her cheeks.
"You won't do it, princess. You and I both know, your heart won't let you. Best to stop pretending to be someone you're not."
"I won't let you kill her." She whispered.
"How do you know it's Moira I'll kill? Maybe it'll be Oliver, or Thea. We'll just have to see, won't we?"
Tears stung Y/n's eyes as she sat with Slade, the others had already left but she couldn't pull herself away just yet. The sight of him drove a knife through her, his dead body leaned against a crate. A lantern casting their shadows over the wall, the cold of the room making Y/n feel so lost and alone.
"I'm so sorry." She whispered. "If I could've saved you I would've, even if I had to suffer through watching you fawn over Shadow. Id go through that pain, just to have you breath again."
She couldn't hold back anymore, her quiet sobs filled the room as she wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his shoulder.
"I would give my life for you Slade."
The sound of people yelling outside ripped Y/n from her sorrow. She took Slade's gun and slowly made her way to the noise, watching as Shadow and Oliver were put to their knees by the same people they've been fighting on this island since they got here.
"Where is she!?" The leader yelled, pointing a gun at Oliver.
"I'm right here you fuckin chump!" Y/n called from over his shoulder.
"Ahh, Y/n. So good of you to join us, put her on her knees with her friends."
She was pushed to the ground next to Oliver, all she could think about was Slade as the man started his big speech on how long he's been trying to catch them.
"But you Y/n, you've caused me the most trouble." He growled. "Whenever I got close to finding you or perfecting the Mirakuru, you had to destroy it. You've ruined everything I worked for! So now...I'm gonna make you choose."
"What?" Y/n asked.
"You heard me! Choose! Who do I kill!? Shadow or Oliver!?"
She was stunned by his question, the pain of Slade's death still raw in her system.
"Who!? CHOOSE!"
"Me! You son of a bitch!" She cried. "Me! shoot me for fuck sake!"
The man chuckled, pointing the gun at Shadow. "Wrong answer."
The sound of a gun shot rang through her ears and Shadows lifeless body falling to the ground had Oliver screaming. Y/n shook her head, not knowing what else to do. She charged at the man, throwing him to the ground. Y/n took his gun and fired it at a few of his men, taking Oliver by the arm and running into the woods.
They made it back to the plane and Y/n collapsed, her breathing was rapid and her heart was racing. Her hands shook with the rest of her body as her vision went black.
"Oliver!" Y/n yelled, running into Arrows headquarters.
"What!? What's going on!?"
"It's Slade! He's back! I don't know how but he's back!"
Oliver ran over, wrapping his sobbing sister in a hug. The same memories racing through his head.
"It'll be alright, everything is gonna be alright."
"H-he's gonna kill you."
It had been weeks since Shadows death and here Y/n was running from more men with guns, she had just escaped a cell, and was on her way back to the plane when they came out of nowhere.
"Get her!" They yelled, racing through the trees and vines.
She was about to book it down a hill to the shore, when a hand came over her mouth, and she was pulled into that same hidden cave.
Y/n attempted to pushed the person away when she felt their chest against her back, but she was hushed by a familiar voice.
"Slade?" She asked, her own voice sounding shakey.
"Quiet, Princess. They're right outside."
They watched through the brush and vines as the men ran past and down the hill. Slade loosened his grip on her, allowing Y/n to turn around.
Her eyes scanned his face, not a scratch.
"How?" She asked.
"The Mirakuru. It healed me."
"It thought it killed you."
"Yeah, then it healed me."
Y/n pulled him into a hug, the feeling of his arms wrap around her made her heart race.
"Is Oliver and Shadow alright?" He asked.
Y/n slowly pulled away, dread written all over her face. "It's only me and Oliver now..."
Slade swallowed, "Where's Shadow?"
"After you died, we were captured. And a the guy that made the Mirakuru shot her."
His eyes filled with tears, "Do you know where he is?"
"Y-yes, Slade I'm so sorry."
"Can you take me to him?"
"...yeah, I can."
The two of them made it to the camp, they hid just outside and watched. Y/n could feel the anger and hurt radiating off of him. He's feeling just how she felt whenever she saw Slade and Shadow together.
"Is he in there?" He asked, pointing at the largest tent in the camp.
"Yeah, but he's got guards."
"You stay here, I'll make this quick."
Without another word he made his way through the brush and out of sight. Y/n did as she was told and stayed there, she was expecting him to be out within minutes but when an hour had passed, she knew something was wrong.
Y/n was about to go in after him when she heard a twig snap behind her, and a gun press to the back of her head.
She slowly put her hands up and turned around, it was the man that killed Shadow. His face was twisted into an evil grin. Y/n was about to jump at him, but before she could a hard object hit her in the side of the head.
Y/n woke up in a cell, it was wet and she could hear waves outside. She rolled over to see that she was below deck of a ship.
Y/n sat up clutching her head, she looked around to get her bearings. She saw the man who killed Shadow, a few of his guys and...Slade?
"Slade?" She asked.
He turned, the look in his eyes was hatred and pain. This wasn't Slade, not mentally anyway.
"Are you okay?"
He didn't answer, only stepped closer to the bars of her cell.
"He just shot her, huh?" He asked.
"What?"
"Shadow! He just shot her!? Funny, he tells me you chose to have her shot!"
"Slade I-"
She was cut off by the feeling of a blade being pressed to her stomach.
"I wanna show you something."
He opened her cell door and stepped away so the guards could grab her, once again she was thrown to her knees in front of the same man.
"Show me how you did it." He growled.
"What?" The man asked.
Slade handed him his gun, "You killed her didn't you, show me how you did it."
"No, she chose."
"I chose?" Y/n asked, getting to her feet. "You wanna know what happened? All three of us were on our knees, he told me to choose but I was so torn from seeing you die that I couldn't comprehend what he said. So he said it again, and I told him to shoot me. And you know what he did?"
She stepped closer, "He laughed, he pointed the gun at her and said "Wrong choice" then he shot her."
Slade looked at her, he could see the tears in her eyes as well as what she was saying was the truth.
"I didn't choose Shadow, he did."
Y/n was expecting I'm to put down his weapon and let her go free, but that wasn't the case.
"I don't care." He said. "If you hadn't chosen yourself, Shadow would still be dead."
Slade turned to the man who killed her. "Is that how you pointed the gun?"
"Y-yes."
Slade suddenly sliced the man's hand off, taking Y/n by surprise.
"Take him out of here."
Y/n watched them drag him away as Slade slowly came towards her. "You love me." He whispered.
Her heart sank at his words, "How-"
"Oliver told me."
"When?"
"Two days before I died."
Y/n felt small and helpless as he got even closer, towering over her.
"You would've chosen Shadow anyway, because you were jealous of her. You hated her didn't you? Because she had my love and you didn't."
"That's not true, Slade. I didn't hate her, she was my friend."
"No, I bet you were happy to see her die. Only to remember I was gone as well."
"This is the Mirakuru talking isn't it? You're not acting like yourself, the Slade I know wouldn't blame me for Shadows death!"
"It is your fault!"
"Then kill me! Then fuckin kill me!"
Slade shook his head, and began circling her. "No, you cannot die until you have suffered the same way I have suffered. Until you have felt every single shred of pain I have."
He got close to her once again, she could feel his hot breath against her neck.
"I won't kill you, until you feel complete despair. And you will...I promise."
To be continued...
I hope you enjoyed ❤️

Jacqueline Wilson historicals in a nutshell:
Stop romanticising Victorian London, it fuckin sucked, especially if you were poor, disabled, black, a child, or a young unmarried woman. God help you if you were multiple of those at once
Stop romanticising Victorian circuses, they were hotbeds of abuse and exploitation
Even being a wealthy victorian with servants and stuff still sucked massively if you were autistic or gnc. If either of those is you I hope you like being physically abused and forcefed opium lol
British public schools actively groom upper class boys into becoming complete monsters with no empathy for anyone else, and then put them in charge of everyone else. Don't worry I'm sure this was just a victorian thing and isn't still going on lol
The Victorian music hall was kind of lit, but don't forget misogyny and sexual abuse still existed
Women's sufferage is good! But don't forget classism still existed in he suffragette movement, and WW1 was still Bad and Traumatic
The 1920s were kind of lit. But don't forget classism still existed, and art and culture were only popping off because everyone was dealing with being massively traumatised by WW1
The Blitz and evacuation were incredibly traumatic. Lots of kids books have already covered this but I just thought you needed to be reminded
Stop romanticising the 1960s. They were only fun if you were a heterosexual white man
