What if... Doomed by the narrative: Han Yoojin vs Han Yoohyun?

who's more doomed? neither. both. as in, don't separate them, but also.

yoojin had no choice but to love yoohyun and so doomed himself. yoohyun had no choice but to reciprocate that love and so doomed himself. by loving each other they also doomed the other.

because of his nature, han yoohyun would have been "doomed" from the start, although in a different way than he is now. burning up everything, and in the end, himself too— although not an ending anyone else would be happy with, living like that, as was in his nature, he would have died alone and without regrets. but loving and being loved so deeply by han yoojin changed him, until he had no choice because he loved yoojin so much— so he died in a dungeon, before his time should have come, having repressed himself for years, in order to protect yoojin. from himself, as well ^^

and if yoojin had gone against his own nature and rejected yoohyun from the start, like everyone else, he could have lived a normal life with his parents— could have graduated and gotten a normal job, would have lived fine even after the dungeons appeared. since it was his inferiority complex that pushed him to awaken to begin with ^^ he could have lived a very ordinary existence, i think, and wouldn't have ended up rewriting the entire world in order to bring his brother back, starting the story altogether.

because sctir is a love story, it makes sense that being doomed by the narrative is equivalent to being doomed by love ^^ but since the love was there— and since love is the point— i don't think the han brothers are very doomed at all actually 💜💜💜

‘You gonna finish the rest of this?’ Eddie motions to the mostly uneaten pie between them. apple, Steve’s favourite. 

The same pie they get at the diner every Wednesday. They share, Eddie has as much as he wants, Steve has most of it. Thats how it’s always been. 

But Steve just shakes his head. Elbows on the table, one thumb at his mouth to bite at the cuticle. Eyes distant. 

Eddie sighs, standing and leaning over to hand Steve the keys to his van, murmuring to him lowly, ‘go get in the car baby, I’ll get the bill.’ 

When Eddie eventually slips into the van, parked off in a dark corner of the lot, Steve’s in the passenger staring off into space. Arms wrapped protectively around his middle. 

Eddie sighs again, turning so he’s facing steve fully. ‘Is this about what your Mom said?’ Eddie asks, no use beating around the bush. 

‘Don’t know what you mean.’ Steve mutters, trying to hide behind King Steve. But the corners of his mouth tick down in that way they do when he’s trying not to cry. 

‘Ah Stevie, c’mere.’ Eddie pulls Steve’s head into the crook of his neck, other arm smoothing down his back in slow circles.  

Steve lets out a shaky breath, sniffing hard and mumbling thickly, ‘she’s right though, thats the thing.’ Steve’s arms that are still circled around himself squeeze. Squeeze into the softness he carries there, that pushes against his henely, and sends Eddie fucking wild. ‘I got fat.’ 

‘Jesus, Steve. you’re just not 19 anymore baby, it’s okay to not still fit into your 32”s’ 

But Steve just grunts wetly and Eddie feels that fiery anger ignite in his gut whenever he thinks about “The Harringtons” too long.

Pulling Steves face out of his neck, Eddie cradles it between his calloused hands. ‘You’re literally so pretty Steve, you’re the only reason either of us ever eat a vegetable and I know for a fact that your stamina is outstanding.’ Eddie implores,  watching Steves glassy eyes take in his words, shy smile curling at his lips. 

‘and, and if you wanna loose weight I’ll support you all the way. but, Stevie, sweetheart, apple of my fucking eye, what do you want?’ 

Steve’s staring at eddies mouth, eyes hooded.

The night was quiet, and Ashley had finally fallen asleep not too long ago, exhausted from the day's events. Leon and you found yourselves sitting by her side, keeping watch over her. In the stillness of the moment, you’d both began to talk about your lives before the apocalypse took over.

Leon leaned back, staring into the distance. "You know, before all of this, I really wanted to be a detective. I wanted to make a difference, to protect as many people as I could and bring justice to those who needed it."

You nodded, a wistful smile on your face. "I can see that. This whole time we’ve been together, you’ve been a great leader Leon. You would have made a great detective. ”

Leon chuckled softly. "Thanks. But what about you? What did you want your life to be like?" his gaze shifted to look into yours.

You pondered for a second, It’d been a long time since you’d thought about your dreams. “It might sound silly but, I really wanted to be a veterinarian. I wanted to care for animals, nurse them back to health, and be their voice when they couldn't speak for themselves. It felt like my calling."

Leon's eyes lit up with curiosity. "Thats not silly at all (M/N), I could see you being really great at that. You’re quite passionate about animals.”

A faint blush dusted your cheeks at the small praise. “You think so? Maybe one day, when all of this is over, I could still pursue that dream." It was a silly thing to say, but hope was the only thing you truly had left in this world.

Leon reached out, placing a comforting hand on your shoulder. "I believe in you. Don't let the chaos and darkness of this world extinguish your dreams. We'll find a way to make them come true, just you wait."

You both shared a hopeful smile, your heart warmed up at his words. It was a nice thing to think about, being able to go back to the way things used to. As the night wore on, you continued to talk about your other smaller dreams, your hopes, and the future you’d want to build. It was a reminder that even in the midst of chaos, there was still room for hope.

Ghost in summer.

Ghost almost always has his whole kit on, I mean he is alwaysss working. Except for today, it's hitting highs of 37 degrees and with y/n being around, it will only feel hotter. 

He is dreading y/n seeing him without his mask, but that is the price he will have to pay for not melting into a puddle.

He walks into 141's meeting point and she doesn't seem to be there yet, he lets out a breath he didn't know he was holding and finds his seat - the one placed right next to y/n. He's grateful for his punctuality at times like this, it prevents them all staring at him at once.

The rest of the 141 squad had all seen him without his mask, obviously, after working with him for such a long time. It was just y/n that hadn't seen him without it, she was relatively new to the team - well at least the newest out of the 141 squad. And she is one of his favorite people already, he would literally take a bullet for her without any hesitation.

It takes a few minutes for the team to fleet through the door into the office, all of them complaining about the heat one by one which Ghost just releases a little grunt in response. She's the last one to come into the office as usual. 

She glances around the warm room until her eyes find Ghost's, she is stuck between awe and shock - frankly, she doesn't know how she should react. 

He just sits there staring at her, annoyed that he can't hide behind his mask.

"Well, who's this handsome gentleman? I don't think we've ever met, I'm y/n." She says, chuckling slightly at her own joke.

"Handsome huh?" He replies with a small laugh of his own.

"Oh shut up," y/n answers rolling her eyes, smacking his arm lightly as she sits down next to him.

She almost falls out of her seat as Ghost offers her a small smile.

"He should wear his mask less often. But she needs to get over this crush on him, so maybe it would be best if he kept it on" She thinks to herself as she tries to sneak glances at him.

All the eyes turn to hers. Shit.

The only relief he gets is when the beasts hiss at the coming dawn and slink away into the darkness and he can drop his weapons but even that is short-lived when all he can see is the body he couldn't save.

Steve breathes in and blinks as the sun starts to set. The body is gone, behind him once more, another chance to get it right. He brandishes his mace -

"Wha -" Steve coughs, shivering. It's bright, brighter than he's seen in ages. "What -"

"Shh," A voice above him hushes and he tries glancing up, finding Eddie's eyes, red, watery, alive, staring down at him. His arms are wrapped around Steve, holding them as he lies on the ground. "It's okay, Steve. You can rest now."

"I have to - save - I need -"

Writing Patterns Pt. 2!!!

Rules: list the last line of the same 10 fics you shared opening lines for and see if there's a pattern!

It was so interesting to look at the fics from a different perspective so I'm gonna do the second one to! And after looking at the one from @griefabyss69 again I also remembered to add some more infos and warnings for the fics 😅

(When they get home later, Eddie begs Steve to get him some anesthetic again sometimes, and to bring home some gloves.]

(That one's the only WIP in this list, I'm currently at about halfway through writing the last chapter, and while I do have an ending in mind, that's not written yet and could still change. So here's the last line from chapter 3.)

Once he's satisfied, he leans forward to press his lips against Eddie's cheek for a second, then takes his hands to help him up, and tugs him towards the bathroom.

There's not really an obvious pattern in the last line, at least none that I see. Both dentist fics (2 & 4) have the parentheses thing, but that was very much intentional for the second one since they belong together. A little more broadly, and if you squint, there's six (3, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 10) with some sort of feelings declaration or kiss which is kinda surprising in how often I ended it there. And then there are also the two (1 & 9) with a short and plain sentence at the end. I honestly would have expected more, if not most, fics to fall in this category.

Basic Codes

In this 3rd instalment, we shall discuss some basic codes and cyphers that encode information. We won't go too much in depth into this, but some of these will be familiar and some won't. At the end of the day, they're just short examples showing how messages can be simplified into a bunch of symbols that make things easier to communicate.

Enigma Machine and a Morse Code transmitter

Morse Code

Morse Code is a fun example that was originally designed for long distance communication using electromagnetic telegraphy (the process of sending written messages across long distances using changes in electromagnetic fields).

The way this works is somewhat similar to binary, you have dots and dashes that are organised in a way to represent letters, and spaces that represent the pauses between letters.

The dit duration is the length of time taken to represent 1 dot, that is, just press the button. So it would take 1 dit unit (or 1 dit) to represent the letter 'E' as you can see in the above picture. For a dash, you have to hold down the button a little longer, having a length of 3 dits. So if you go to the letter 'A', the length of the word is 4 dits!

There are 3 types of pauses:

Symbol space - Pausing between dots and dashes to represent a character. For the sake of convenience, I'll represent this with an s. This has length 1 dit.

Letter space - Pausing between characters. I'll use p to represent this. This has length 3 dits.

Word space - Pausing between words. For the sake of convenience, I'll represent this with w. This has length 6 dits.

Let's say you want to represent the letter B, given by "_s." and would have length 5 dits.

If you want to represent BE, it would look like "_s.p." and would have length 9 dits.

And finally BE U, which would look like "_s.p.w.s.s.s_" and would have length 25 dits.

The length of times for the dit durations is up to the users, they're the ones operating, but these are typical ways of defining lengths of words in a standardized way. The actual length of a dit can be anything, anywhere from 10 milliseconds to 100 milliseconds, but as long as one is consistent and efficient.

One thing to notice is that the length of the coded characters are different for each letter of the English alphabet. This is due to entropy, where the length of the encrypted character is inversely related to the frequency of the letter itself. 'E' is the most common letter, so it has the shortest representation, and 'Q' is the least frequent, so it is the longest.

ISBN

The ISBN is an international naming standard that identifies books uniquely (for those published before 2007). It is a 10 digit number that comes of the form

The check digit is an important feature in codes. It enables one to check if the code/message is a valid message or not. This is found in error-correcting codes, and we'll go into this later. It's like saying, "Oh how do I trust this tumblr dude?" and then using certain indicators you can use to make sure that they're legit.

The first 3 parts of the ISBN number are usually easily determined, because they are very deterministic. The check digit is determined using a formula that says

Take the above example and let's make a table

The formula asks us to calculate the sum of the n x digit column, and check if that's divisible by 11. In the case of 7, we notice that the sum of that column is 297 (which is divisible by 11). In the case of 8, the sum of the column is 307, which is not divisible by 11. So if you're given the ISBN 0-387-97812-8, you know that it is not a valid ISBN number.

The above code is called ISBN-10, and there are variations, one example is ISBN-13 which relies on a 13 digit code with the exact same principle so that you can accommodate for a lot more books.

There are several examples of error-correcting codes and play important roles in codes employed on satellites where there is a large amount of corruption of machine code going on.

Coming up next...

We won't do much on error-detecting and error-correcting codes because they are not really useful to explain at the moment. But what we can do it show how to actually design an encryption-decryption algorithm going from the alphabet to a set of symbols, like what we saw in Morse code.

Random headcanons/reasoning behind headcanons because I'm thinking about them

below the read more because idk how long this is gonna end up being

I went with both ships having started using a Vertumna based calender straight from launch. It wouldn't have month names yet, but it would run off the 387(ish) day calender I've come up with rather than Earth's 365.25 day one, with the definition of smaller units of time slightly adjusted to have a new definition of 24 hours based on a slightly longer second

In-universe, this would be because of all the technical issues you'd face having to reprogram everything with a different definition of how long a second is, let alone a minute or hour or day, ect ect.

The out-of-universe reasoning is that it makes it easier for me to do math about peoples ages, and trying to adjust writing to use vastly different time schedules is WAY harder in practice than it is in theory

Also the reason I went with the calender being that length is that it would have characters reach their first "lap year" at Vertumna age 16, turing 17 Earth years at about the same time. It'd put almost all of the main characters a full Earth year older by the time they switch to their final portraits.

Honestly the main reason was so that Sol, Anemone, and the twins turn 18 in Earth years that year rather than the next, because it makes some of the stuff they can get up to (dating older characters, drinking, soldiering, war criming....) feel a little less :S for me personally

Any given Sol's birthday could be from the middle of Early Quiet to the first half of Mid Quiet, kinda like how they can have different names and augments and such

For a BUNCH of reasons I'll eventually write down in a legible manner, I strongly believe that Dys and Tang are planned fraternal twins and geneticly half siblings, sharing Besk as their biological mother and having different donors for the other half of their dna

For similar reasons, all of Anne's children have different donors for fathers, and the triplets were planned as triplets from before conception

I think that like how Sol's augment can vary from timeline to timeline, whether or not Nomi actually has one and what it might be varies too, but it's always a mystery on their part

Since the game says the Helio was in space for less time than the Strato but never specifies how much less, I went with Lindsey's not-technically-canon idea(?) that it was in space for about 15 years.

When the Helios arive, Vace is already 18, and Rex turns 16 shortly after, so this would put them as actually Earth born rather than space born, like Utopia. (Actually ended up basing a lot of the npc and family planning of the Helio around this idea and the implications it could have)

Another not-technically-canon thing Lindsey mentioned was that the Helios' long form names are retronyms picked after landing; I'm... not actually using that one, technically, but I did go with the similar idea of it being something that people with unfitting names did upon leaving Earth.

Idk, I just think that if you know how the naming process works enough to have new ones picked by the time you get there that you probably left with that information, so why would they have waited to switch over if they were gonna do it at all?

Also, the military fascist group coming into town and suddenly changing their names to fit the local culture isn't really, like... in line with how those groups tend to work.
