In general, 127’s MVs and season’s greetings have great fanfic concepts that are mostly underutilized (you’ve mentioned that a Superhuman-based hero AU would be an obvious idea). I think it’s not necessarily lack of interest, but more that the extra research needed to craft these AUs can be tedious, or that the writer may feel insecure in their ability to depict such an AU accurately. The tendency to stick with what is known is strong. If a college AU garners as much or more kudos as an (1/2)
intricately researched and plotted AU, then why bother? For some, the fanfic is simply a vehicle to convey explicit content. (I think entire NCT ships are formed and carried by the desire to see one’s bias in a certain explicit role.) But k-fanfic writers and k-artists are certainly more imaginative than internationals. Also: I think NCT Life in Gapyeong killed most i-writers’ image of a suave, sharpshooter alpha!Jaehyun, so perhaps that’s another reason why the DoMel AU is less explored. (2/2)

I agree. I found i-k-pop fandom to be the most weak when it comes to authors. I guess it's the combination of much more writers being young (as oppose to, say, Star Treck who has writers in their 60-s), the lack of a well-described universe and rules (which a TV-series provides) and the lack of "oldies" who set the bar high.
You are talking about Doberman who hold his gun incorrectly on group pictures? Lol. In k-pop fanart he isn't "a suave, sharpshooter alpha!Jaehyun".
I think writing culture plays a big role. In Russia for some reason (maybe because of fanfiction growing out of roleplaying/reconstruction and Tolkien) researching is a big thing. There are forums where people factcheck (historical, medical, etc). If a person is into a silly samurai-anime, he/she will know the names of the generals, the bushido code, the name of places better than a common Japanese. Many fanfic-writers become publishing writers.
In English-speaking fandom I noticed that people from UK (which is evident from the use of metric system and word spelling) tend to try to write about Korea even if with mistakes, while people from US just move the characters to California (US is very self-absorbed and few travel abroad, while Europeans like to take leap years and go around the world).
I don't know about Korea, but I know it is still a country where people read a lot. And there are lots of BL novellas from different Asian countries, where writers take plot seriously (and cencorship makes many do bromance instead of open BL). So I'd assume it influences what fanfic-writers try to emulate.
I still didn't expect k-pop to be as weak because anime fandoms are not that bad. And the two subcultures are close (attention on Asia). My theory is that after BTS there was an influx of people who never touched any sub-culture before?
