The old farm truck rocked back and forth as you made your way up the all-too familiar dirt path, heading in the direction of the greenhouses. You’d already let the hens out to graze and feed and the last thing you had to do before dropping today’s produce off was check on the nurseries.
Johnny Cash’s southern twang hummed gently over the speakers, your well worn-in cassette tape having been the first thing you reached for this morning. The sun had risen just a few hours ago, and after a few cups of much needed coffee you were ready to go.
The caffeine had done the lord's work, having cleared your brain of any anxious background noise. You could actually function when you had tasks at hand. The second you slowed down though… well, that was a different story. You were trying hard not to imagine Abby sitting beside you in the beat-to-hell red pickup, her blonde braid tossed over her shoulder as she stuck her arm out of the window. You used to joke about her being part dog, what with her loving the wind on her face so much. You missed being able to reach out and wrap a stray strand of blonde hair around your finger, only giving it a soft tug when those blue eyes of hers looked at you with a little too much heat behind them.
So instead of looking at the empty passenger seat you busied yourself with turning up the volume, country music crackling over the shot, old speakers. You all but jumped out of the car the second you put the car in park, ready to get your hands dirty and your mind preoccupied.
You couldn’t remember how many times the two of you had snuck off to the greenhouse when your mother had gotten a little too overbearing back when she still lived in the main house with you. There wasn’t a single surface in the old rickety building that abby hadn’t fucked you on or vice versa.
You walked along the rows and rows of seedlings, looking for any sign of water rot or bug infestations. Everything was perfect, every stem and leaf a vibrant green. Tomatoes, all different kinds of summer squash, and beans of every variety; you had the gift of a green thumb. Your father was more than happy to sign his company over to you right before he passed. All five acres of his property belonged to you now, and with that every bit of responsibility had been placed upon your shoulders. You used to resent the fact that you were so young and in charge of so much. Now you were thankful for the constant work. Distractions. You hated seeing your dad’s life work being summed up as a mere distraction, but it was the only thing that got you out of bed in the morning.
Everyone in the family knew that your dad had wanted a boy when your mother’s pregnancy was first announced. It was a family business, the job having been passed down to him by his own father. Still, he had been ecstatic to show you the ropes. Rather than taking up dance or art like most other little girls your age, you spent your free time elbow deep in mud. You wore the bows and fussed over getting new outfits, but overalls were your daily uniform.
You wore a pair even today, your work boots tightly fastened to ward away any unwanted pecks from overprotective mother hens. Today was bound to be monotonous, as it always was. All you had to do was repot a few strawberry plants. Maybe if you were lucky a goat would find a hole in the gate and escape. At least it would give you something to worry about that wasn’t Abby related.
You slunk over towards the sinks, pumping soap into your dirt covered palm to wash off the dirt. You rubbed your hands together to begin lathering but froze when you realized your right hand felt bare. You brushed your thumb against your middle finger only to realize that it was just as you had feared.
Your ring. It wasn’t there.
White hot dread locked your limbs as you turned your hand over, the dainty opal missing from your middle finger. You blinked, hoping that you were just seeing things. You didn’t even turn off the sinks before racing back over to the repotting table, as if the promise ring had grown legs and would escape you. Your eyes frantically searched the table, pain shooting through your knees as you dropped down on all fours, pushing dirt and leaves aside to get a better vantage point. Nothing. It wasn’t there.
“Oh god. No! No, no, no.” You all but screamed, eyes filling with tears as you pulled yourself off.
You broke out into a nervous sweat, the blood rushing from your head. This wasn’t happening. This couldn’t be happening right now.
You didn’t care if you killed the plants, you ripped the strawberries up by their stems, shaking their roots out as you searched their new pots.
Every. Single. One.
Empty.
Abby had given you that ring just before her last deployment, promising that she would be giving you the real thing once she got back. Of course, she never did. It was single handedly the most important piece of jewelry that you had ever owned, even above your grandmother’s pearls and engagement ring. How could you be so reckless? Why hadn’t you thought to leave it in the car?
“Stupid! I’m so fucking stupid!” You screamed, tossing a clay pot on the ground in a fit of anger. It shattered behind you, exploding into a thousand tiny pieces.
You spent an hour sifting through dirt and untangling roots before you finally realized that it was a lost cause. The ring was gone. You’d wrecked the entire greenhouse in your frantic search and the strawberries were just as you expected: dead.
You slammed the door shut behind you, the old window panes shaking with the force. You had barely thrown yourself into the pickup before your body was wracked with full body sobs. White knuckling the steering wheel you leaned your head forward, completely unbothered as the horn blared.
How could you lose something so precious to you? It had been the last gift that you had ever received from Abby. The last. There was no possible way to replace something that was that special to you. Her hands had touched that ring. She’d been nervous to give it to you in the first place, anxious that two years hadn’t been enough time to give you something that sentimental. It was the meaning behind it that had you clutching at your chest, your fingernails digging into your shirt as if you could rip your heart straight out from between your ribs.
She was going to replace that ring once she got back. Give you the “real deal” once she was back home and able to have a ceremony.
But there would never be a ceremony. Never another ring. Never another Abby.
Never. Never. Never.
It felt like you were losing a piece of her, and with that came the revelation- the same one that you’ve already had a thousand times- that she was really gone. There would be no do-overs; no alternate universes where the two of you could be together. The reality of your situation sat heavy in your throat, clogging your airway.
The loss of Abby had eclipsed your heart completely, and darkness was all that was left.
You stayed in the car until your eyes had practically swelled shut and there were no more tears to shed.
Tumblr media
The car ride back to her childhood home was completely silent, the only sound being the engine of Joel’s shiny new truck. She did her best to compliment him on the new purchase, but Ellie was sure that she didn’t sound even half as enthusiastic as she had hoped she would. She didn’t feel like being an actress today. Not when he already knew how bad she was doing. Joel had taken one look at her as she got off of the plane and frowned, grabbing her bags only after giving her a bone shattering side hug.
“Well I missed ya,” He finally spoke, causing her to jump in surprise. The sound of his baritone voice soothed her nerves over though. “I’ve really missed you annoyin’ the hell outta me at all hours of the day.”
Ellie cracked a small smile at that, leaning her head into the plush leather seat. The last time she saw Joel was when she had first been transferred to the Kindred Hospital back in Chicago, which was where she had rotted away for a full week. Her eye and face healed up quickly but her back was a different story. She’d been burned badly and had all of the nasty scars to prove it. He had stayed by her bedside for the entire week and had helped her to readjust to being back home in her apartment. The nearly debilitating pain was the only thing that had distracted her from the gravity of her situation back then.
Her therapist said it was normal to disassociate for long periods of time when the body and mind are put under so much stress. Ellie still felt like Ellie back then, but it was only because she didn’t have any real grasp on reality. It was just a few days after Joel left that she finally snapped out of it. She was one of the only five that survived. She was told that landmines were the cause of so many deaths in Iraq.
“It happens all the time out there. You didn’t know. It’s not your fault.”
She didn’t want her unit to just be another statistic. They weren’t just numbers. They were people who had loved ones at home. Loved ones that they had to leave for months and months on end. She couldn’t help but shoulder all of the blame. Ellie was the one that had led them out there in the first place. It was her fault, so why hadn’t she died right along with them? She would have considered herself lucky if she had lost her life right along with them. These were the people that she saw daily. Ellie had developed deep friendships with every member of her unit. She knew the details of all of their lives- the names of their children and loved ones back at home, what they wanted to do with their lives once they were dismissed- how could she not feel like someone had ripped her soul to shreds? How could she not constantly remind herself, every second of every goddamn day, that she was the reason.
She was a ghost. A mere shell of the person that she once was and she had no one to blame but herself.
“I didn’t know you liked me being annoying so much,” Still, she turned to Joel and cracked him a small smile. It was more for his sake and less for hers though. “I’ll make sure to turn it up a notch while I’m here.”
The older man grumbled, shaking his head slightly as he kept his eyes on the country roads in front of him. “That sounds like a threat.”
Ellie could tell that he was playing with her. They were professionals when it came to teasing each other, often to the point that people thought that they were seriously bickering. The short haired female let herself settle into the normalcy of the moment. He hadn’t mentioned anything about the accident or her mental state yet, so it was easy to pretend that things were still…okay.
So that’s exactly what she did. She began to pretend. Ellie allowed herself to be transported back in time. This was just another Tuesday. She’d get back home and sweet talk Joel into cooking her an after school snack. Then she’d go up to her room and procrastinate doing her homework so that she could reread one of her comics.
“Got anything good in here?” Ellie asked before opening up the center console. “I’m not gonna find anything nasty, am I?”
Joel’s lips pursed as he tried to fight off a smile. “Don’t go rifflin’ through my shit, kiddo.”
Her eyes snagged on a familiar purple book, and for the first time in a while something yawned to life in her chest. Joy.
“What do we have here?” She pulled out the book of puns, using it to fan herself before she cracked the bad boy open.
“Ah, don’t start.” He groaned.
She didn’t take the time to wonder why he had put the well loved book in his brand new truck. Instead of allowing herself to be overcome with endearment she flipped to a random page, her lips turning up in the first genuine smile she’d had in months.
“Where can you find a tiny coke?” She asked him, turning in her seat so that she could face him, tucking one of her converse-clad feet underneath her.
“Hey! Get your dirty shoes off of my new upholstery!” Joel reached over and gave her knee a slap.
Ellie reared back, holding the book of puns tight to her chest.
“Come on, try and guess.”
He groaned, rolling his eyes as he leaned his arm against the door.
“I don’t know… tiny town.”
Her nose wrinkled, an eyebrow quirking up at his half assed answer.
“Shitty guess, but alright.” She mumbled under her breath. “Mini-soda.”
“Hilarious.” He said sarcastically, turning onto the familiar drive.
“I think I saw you smile though.”She leaned over to give his cheek a poke, but he swiftly batted her hand away.
The truck’s all-terrain tires crunched over the gravel driveway, revealing the only real home she’d ever lived in. The house and yard looked exactly the same as it had whenever she was a teenager. She sighed out a breath of relief, not knowing how much well she would have handled any sort of severe change. Ellie opened the passenger side door before Joel had a chance to put the car in park, eager to settle in after the flight. She wanted to shower, and that surprised her a bit. A welcome surprise.
Maybe things would be better for her here.
“You didn’t turn my old room into some perverted sex dungeon while I was gone, did you?” She teased as she grabbed her tan duffel bag, easily tossing it over her shoulder as she bounded up the stairs.
He laughed as a response, following close behind her so that he could unlock the front door. She didn’t know why he even bothered. He lived in the middle of nowhere, and they rarely got visitors.
“I’ve got some guitars in there that are worth a fortune.” He’d told her the last time she’d asked.
It had been one of the few times that Ellie had snuck out of the house after curfew. She’d been unable to haul herself back into her second story window once she’d gotten back home and had been forced to sleep in the beat up old hatchback that he had bought her for her sixteenth birthday. Breakfast that morning had been… tense, to say the least.
“I didn’t touch your room… but I did get a dog, so make sure not to let her out.”
She paused at that, turning to look at him with wide eyes. There had been a strict “no animals” rule back when she lived with him. She never thought she’d see the day where Joel Miller would adopt a pet, let alone a dog.
“You got a dog?” She was still in disbelief and half expected him to fucking with her.
“Buckley is a good boy. He shits on the floor sometimes and barks all hours of morning though. It’s almost like having you home.” He teased, bumping his shoulder against hers so that he could shove his key into the lock.
The deadbolt clicked open, and low and behold there was a dog. He looked like some sort of lab mix, his pink tongue hanging out of the side of his mouth as he anxiously waited for his owner’s return. Ellie was too excited to come up with a witty response to Joel’s joke. She tossed her duffle down on the couch, quickly getting down on her knees so that she could pet the dog.
“He’s not much of a guard dog, is he?” He asked, closing the door behind him.
The second that Ellie’s hand tangled into his thick black fur he flopped down, eager for love. Ellie smirked, looking at Joel over her shoulder.
“I don’t know. He looks pretty ferocious to me.”
The sudden knock on the door had Ellie’s lips downturning, eyebrows pinching in confusion. She didn’t like the idea of company right now, and the last thing she wanted was to socialize with anyone. For a second she feared that he had called a doctor or therapist to come out to the house to see her. She wasn’t sure if she could take another “come to Jesus” meeting this week, and she was barely holding it together as is. Ellie put her hands on her knees, pushing herself up to stand before she nodded at the door.
“Company?” She simply asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
Joel ignored her obvious distaste, wrenching the door open quickly before she could stop him. It sure as hell wasn’t Tommy. . . and Ellie doubted that most doctors wore overalls, even in Jackson. The sun was beginning to set on the horizon, the golden rays shone through the vast expanse of trees on the property, making it almost look like the world was on fire. The warm glow behind the beautiful stranger made her look ethereal almost, her eyes watery and cheeks flushed. At her feet was a cardboard box packed to the brim with fruits and vegetables. All at once Ellie became startlingly aware of the fact that she looked like absolute hammered shit. Her hair was a frizzy mess, her skin was paler than it had ever been before, and she was wearing an old NASA shirt and dingy sweatpants. If she noticed her disheveled appearance she didn’t show it.
The smile that she beamed in Joel’s direction didn’t quite reach her eyes, and a strange sense of understanding flickered in Ellie’s gaze as she took a few inquisitive steps forward. Ellie Williams knew what suffering was like; true suffering. Looking at her was like looking in a mirror, her well hidden misery plain as day to the auburn haired female.
“Sorry I’m so late, Mr Miller. My truck was giving me problems.” Her voice was beautiful. Melodic in a way that Ellie’s wasn’t.
Spring. . . this girl was spring incarnate.
And she was lying through her teeth.
She’d been crying. Ellie could tell. Still, Joel was already peeking his head out of the door, looking in the direction of where she had parked.
“I could take a look at it for you.” He was being dismissed with a small wave of your hand before he could even get the words fully out.
“That’s so nice of you, but I’ve got it cranking up again. It shouldn’t give me any more trouble today.” Her hair fell off of her shoulder as she leaned down to pick up the box.
Ellie moved forward without thinking, picking up the heavy box for the girl before her fingers could even grip the sides of the cardboard. “Here, let me get it.” She said, craning her neck up so that she could speak directly to the woman.
There wasn’t a single thing about you that Ellie found undesirable. In that moment she was completely certain that you were the most beautiful woman she had ever seen, even with the pain and memory that swirled behind your bright eyes. Their eyes locked, and much to Ellie’s embarrassment, she held her gaze. She watched her with the same sort of silent appreciation.
“-I think it would be good for her. What do you say?” Ellie hadn’t noticed that Joel had been talking the entire time.
The woman blinked a few times, tearing her eyes away from Ellie. “Huh? I’m sorry, do you mind repeating that?” She was nervously tucking a few strands of unruly hair behind her ear, shifting in place on the front porch.
“I was just saying that Ellie is going to be staying out here with me. I think working with you on the farm would be good for her. It would help her to get out of the house, and I know you’ve been pretty busy since it’s just you running things now.” Joel put a hand on Ellie’s shoulder and gave it a gentle squeeze. Supportive. Non-judgemental. He was reminding her what would be good for her mental state right now, and having something to do with her hands would certainly help to take her mind off of things.
“O-Oh!” The girl’s lips parted in shock, her eyes flickering between the two of them. “Yeah, I don’t see why not. I get a pretty early start though, so don’t feel obligated to wake up as early as I do.”
“I’ll wake up.” Ellie said quickly, nodding her head.
Her words held a tone of desperation and it had Joel’s head whipping around in her direction. He probably wasn’t expecting her to be so supportive of his last minute idea. She couldn’t be sure if it was because she genuinely wanted to get her mind off of things or if the farm girl’s looks had anything to do with her enthusiasm. Ellie couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt drawn to someone like this. Relationships were the last thing on her mind these days.
“Can you start tomorrow?” The other girl asked, shoving her hands into her front pockets.
Adorable. She was adorable. Ellie felt her breath hitch and all she could do was nod as an answer for your question.
“Alright. . . “She began to trail off, backing up a few steps on the porch. It seemed like you were in a bit of a hurry. “I’ll see you tomorrow then.”
“Tomorrow.” Ellie repeated back to her.
She leaned back, lifting the box higher up on her chest so that she could watch the woman get back into her mud stained pickup truck. She only took a step back when Joel started to close the door on her.
“So you’re actually fine with that? I didn’t think you would go for it, honestly.” Joel rubbed at his stubbled chin, flashing her a small smile of approval.
“There’s no way I want to be stuck in a house with your ass all hours of the day.” Ellie quipped, walking to the kitchen so that she could place the vegetables on the countertop.
“I think workin’ there would be good for the both of you. That poor girl has had an awful year. . . I think you’d be good for each other. She needs a friend.” Joel’s voice was somber as he followed her into the kitchen.
Ellie turned to face the older man, swallowing hard as he leaned against the doorway. He was being a bit cryptic. It seemed like he didn’t want to be the one to tell Ellie the girl’s business. Still, she was curious, and she didn’t want to be blind sided tomorrow just in case she wanted to talk about it. Ellie wasn’t usually nosey, but she had a strong urge to get to know her.
“What do you mean by that?” Ellie’s first guess was that she had to be going through some sort of divorce. Joel had mentioned the fact that she was on her own now, so coming to that conclusion was natural.
“No, nothin’ like that,” He cleared his throat before pushing off of the door frame, slowly beginning to unload the box's contents. “She lost her girlfriend and her father this year. She’s the kindest girl. . . you’d never know how much she’s sufferin’ based on how she acts.”
“Oh.” Ellie frowned, having realized that your mourning must be the reason for your sad, sad eyes. She understood how it felt to lose so many people so close together. Better than anyone, really.
“Oh.”

"Can you give me one more night?" Eddie looks up at him, his brown eyes shining with unshed tears. "Please?"
He knows he shouldn't. He needs to be strong and say tell him, "I'm sorry, but no."
But Steve has never been a strong man when it comes to Eddie Munson.
So he drops his coat on the bedside chair that was occupied by Wayne fifteen minutes ago until he wandered down to the cafeteria for another cup of coffee (Steve could've gotten him one from the machine in the nurse's station—it would've been free, at least) and plops down in the other one with a bone deep sigh.
"Someone's gotta go home and check on Ozzy," he tells him softly, reaching forward to brush Eddie's hair out of his eyes.
Those gorgeous brown eyes that are more alive and bright tonight, though a little unfocused from the pain meds they've got him on, than they were when the ambulance brought him in ten days ago, barely conscious on the gurney but still pleading for his husband.
Steve had never been so terrified in his life.
"Wayne can stop by on his way to work," Eddie says, taking Steve's hand and lacing their fingers together. "Please, Stevie."
Eddie's quiet voice and his pleading eyes have Steve's heart breaking all over again. Eddie's begged him to stay every single night since waking up after his surgery, scared to be alone even for a second.
Steve knows about Eddie's childhood fear of hospitals, but Eddie confided in him on the third night of recovery, still high and loopy on morphine–
"It's not hospitals themselves," he'd muttered. His eyes were closed and his heart monitor was so steady Steve thought he'd fallen asleep.
"Yeah?"
Any free time Steve had, whether he was on his breaks or clocked out, he spent it at Eddie's bedside.
Eddie's eyes briefly opened and his gaze slid over to Steve. "s'the dying alone part that I'm afraid of."
Steve had choked on a sob, already fragile from the very real fact that Eddie had almost died, and made the promise that that was never going to happen.
"You're being discharged tomorrow," Steve says, pressing a kiss to their hands. "This is the last night you have to spend in this place, I promise. You get to sleep in our bed with me beside you and Ozzy tucked behind your knees, and you're never going to look at another motorcycle ever again."
But he doesn't tell him no.
Instead, he makes sure Eddie is as comfortable as he can be without being in pain and carefully climbs into the bed beside him. Wayne comes back and finds them curled around each other and sharing soft kisses between equally soft words.

HEYYY, firstly how are you! I wanted to ask if you could write about a teen male reader with the Batfam. He is kinda like the winter soldier if you know what I mean ( skilled fighter, metal arm..), since he lived with the Batfam he was doing a good mental recovery, but one day he goes back to winter soldier mode on the fam, and they try to get him back to normal again, idk
Thanks you bye !
Hi anon, I'm well and I hope you are doing okay too. I can do it, no worries.
Summary: (Y/N) gets back into the Winter Soldier mode.
Warnings: implications of torture, mind control, mentions of Hydra, Bruce is sad for (Y/N), some violence... And everything else that goes with Hydra and brain washing.
Tumblr media
The road to recovery is often a long one. Bruce thought of it when he first saw (Y/N), aka the Winter Soldier. The infamous one, a ghost within the intel community. Many people didn't believe that the Winter Soldier even existed. But the trail of neat and clean murders was the one thing that made Bruce think there is something more.
Of course, the way to get (Y/N) was hell. Hell being and understatement of the decade. Bruce at one thought that he was indeed chasing a Ghost, but something in his mind told him that the Winter Soldier was real. Something in his gut made him chase that ghost.
Months of chasing, fighting and hoping he would be alive by the next encounter, they finally got him. Bruce was lucky to be alive. He hugged all of his kids right then and there. (Y/N) was put into a glass box, strong enough to contain Bane.
(Y/N) refused to back down, refused to retreat. He punched the glass of the cage with his metal arm and some were worried that he would actually brake it. Bruce knew that even if he broke the glass, he had no handler anymore.
His organization has been destroyed. Everyone important was caught. Those who weren't... Well, their time was running out. They may have scattered like rats, but you can bet your ass on anything that the League would find them all. Especially since they didn't burn down their base. One hell of a mistake.
Bruce and the rest searched through the base and they found something that can only be considered as a holy grail when it comes to someone who was brainwashed.
A dark red book, bounded in leather, with all the trigger words written on those pages... Bruce knew that he has hit a jackpot. He looked through them and then has decided to burn it. They also found the footage of (Y/N)'s brainwashing,
The footage, as much as it is damning, making it very easy to persecute anyone they needed, it was also nauseating. (Y/N) was tortured with electricity, memory wiped with electricity... Worse of all, (Y/N) fighting.
It had shaken Bruce to his core and made him triple check the manor security and it has made him check on his sons 5 times that night. He couldn't sleep at all. He refused to sleep that one single evening and night.
And when he stood in front of the glass cage, (Y/N) looked utterly defeated. He was sitting down, looking down at his metal arm and his human arm. He seemed mad beyond belief that he was even caught. Bruce knew he would have to be delicate and gentle with this (Y/N). He had taken the book with him, to try and have some sort of leverage.
And to show him that he was free. (Y/N) was finally free of the mental shackles that they have put on him. Bruce took a chair and sat down near the cell, but far enough to make sure that there was some sort of space.
He couldn't have (Y/N) feel cornered.
He sat down, book in his lap. (Y/N) still looked down, but looked up after a few moments.
" They will come and get me back. " (Y/N) said and Bruce wanted to laugh.
" Hydra is gone. " Bruce simply stated and watched (Y/N)'s reaction.
Nothing. Huh.
" Lies. "
Bruce stayed calm and shook his head. " I'm afraid I'm telling you the truth. The book you see in my hands? The book with your trigger words. Do you really think they would hand it over ever so willingly? " Bruce asked, showing him the dark red leather book.
" You are officially free. " Bruce said as and watched the way (Y/N) reacted.
Bruce nearly broke when he saw hope in (Y/N)'s eyes. He never lost hope.
" I'll never be free... " (Y/N) said quietly, looking at his metal arm. Bruce saw that it was not a nice arms, made with quality. While it looked strong, it wasn't made to be comfortable. And Bruce could see the claw marks at the part where the flesh and metal met.
" That may be true. But you can start healing. You can start working through all of the trauma that they put you through. Mental scars will always be there, but I can help you. " Bruce said softly and (Y/N) was still emotionless and with hope glimmering in his eyes, there was something else too. Bruce could only decipher it as happiness, but he knew that (Y/N) would rather die than admit it.
" I'll be with you the entire way. I have a great friend who can help you unpack everything they put you through. And I can give you a better metal arm, something that wouldn't be so uncomfortable and something that reminds you off the organization. " Bruce said as he looked at (Y/N), holding the book close.
" And what about the book? "(Y/N) asked quietly and Bruce knew exactly what (Y/N) meant.
" It will be destroyed by me. I wanted to show you that the thing keeping you in their grasp is destroyed. Well, will be destroyed. " Bruce said as he put the book down on the chair before moving closer.
" And you can officially start your new life. "
" I'm not sure if I can... " (Y/N) said softly and the defenses were slowly cracking.
" I can assure you, you can. You will have to put some work into it, but it will pay off. I'll be there to help you to start. "
" But the feeling of guilt will never go away, will it? "
" After some time it will. One way is to go through therapy and work it out or you can become a hero. But that only if you want it and after you went through therapy. " Bruce said softly.
" Maybe then I'll atone for it... " (Y/N) said softly.
" One step at the time (Y/N). One step at the time. " Bruce said softly.
And that's exactly what has happened at the time. Bruce made sure to be with (Y/N) before and after the therapy sessions. He made sure (Y/N) knew he had support while he was talking to the Black Canary. And once Black Canary said he could start meeting new people, Bruce slowly started bringing his sons around.
Damian knew exactly how (Y/N) felt. Being in that environment is not easy and it's just the battle of the fittest. And one hell of a battle for your mind. You truly had to be strong enough to make sure to not completely break. Somehow, (Y/N) has kept his humanity, but he had to give a part of his soul to keep it.
Jason just talked to him about stuff and has made sure that he has access to TV shows and movies. (Y/N) needed to be connected to the outside world. And also, Jason has been bringing books for (Y/N) to read. Jason took him his favorites and often took him some classics. (Y/N) appreciated it and liked all the recommendations that Jason has brought to him. It was a nice break.
Tim has always sneaked in some snacks and the two would just talk. It was a hell of a time and since (Y/N) has started school, Tim would help with mathematics and some other subjects. (Y/N) couldn't really go to a public school or any type of school, but he still needs his high school diploma.
And Dick? Dick has been involved in making sure that (Y/N) was getting physical activity. (Y/N) was stiff in Dick's opinion and he wanted to make sure (Y/N) felt good in his body too. Dick did stretches, some tricks and considering that (Y/N) did have some knowledge about gymnastics, it was slightly easier. Not to mention, stretches were something that everyone needs.
About a year after being saved, (Y/N) has moved into the Wayne Manor. It was a nice change of scenery for (Y/N). Beautiful manor, garden, not to mention no noises... And Titus, the Great Dane being an emotional support animal for (Y/N)...
(Y/N) was incredibly happy, but had hard time showing it. Everyone knew but didn't comment on it. They were helping him get adjusted to his new life now and they were more than happy to help. And one thing that made (Y/N) happy out of his mind was the fact that he got a new metal arm. It was black, with red, blue and green accents. It was something to signalized that he was a member of the family.
Bruce was going to adopt him soon enough. Just give him some time and he will do it.
But something happened at the two month mark. Something made him reverse back into the Winter Soldier mode. Bruce was certain that they wiped the triggers from his mind. Not to mention, the boys remembered the trigger words, just in case something like this happened and that they could be careful.
But something must have snapped inside of (Y/N). The boys were careful, but something must have gone awry. Something.
Jason and Dick were the first ones to see it and were the first ones to see it and the brunt end of it. Jason was hurled out the window, while Dick was thrown at the wall like a rag doll. The commotion woke Tim up and Damian was curious as to what was going on.
They were also thrown around the room.
" (Y/N), you are not a Winter Soldier, relax! " Jason said as he made his way through the window, grunting at the pain.
" Please, (Y/N) this is not you! " Dick yelled as he gripped his sides, huffing and panting.
(Y/N), seemingly didn't hear anything and nothing was reaching him. The cold and murderous look in his eyes was more than enough to tell them that they had to subdue him.
Somehow.
Damian jumped on (Y/N)'s shoulders, trying to take his metal arm off. Once they get that off, they are going to be fine. They hope at least.
" (Y/N) come on! Fight it! " Damian raised his voice, trying to make (Y/N) see his senses. (Y/N) didn't listen and threw himself into the wall, back first to throw Damian off and then he threw Damian into the shelves, making him groan in pain.
Bruce walked in from the outside and froze in shock. His adopted sons in various stages of pain and (Y/N) in the Winter Soldier mode. Bruce stayed calm as he glanced over his sons.
They were alive and breathing. That's the important thing right now.
" (Y/N) listen to me. " Bruce said softly as he moved closer, quickly checking on his sons, who were all softly confirming that they were good.
" Look at me. Remember me. It's Bruce. You are safe. The Winter Soldier doesn't control you, you control him. " Bruce said, raising his hands in the air, trying to make sure that he didn't look like threatening.
" You control him, remember that. " Bruce said as he quickly checked on Jason.
(Y/N) looked like he was confused and shook his head. Bruce watched in silence as (Y/N) was getting his bearings together. And once he saw tears falling down his cheeks, he swooped in and hugged his son.
(Y/N) wept as Bruce embraced him and everyone, including Alfred, brought him into a hug. It was a tight hug and Bruce refused to let (Y/N) shatter. And (Y/N) felt safe Bruce's embrace, but by God, guilt was eating him alive.
Apologies were falling from his lips and everyone assured him that it wasn't his fault. It really wasn't his fault.

eddie x fem reader
(honey I’m home master list)
Summary: eddie waits for results and gets a heart to heart from Wayne. Recovery is tough road, but the sun shines.
triggers: dealing with ptsd and learning to heal.
Special thanks to @sweetsweetjellybean for helping me through this one! + all the others. Only 2 more chapters to go! 🥹
  “This is it,” Eddie says, swiveling in his seat to look over at you, the rings on his finger tapping gently against the steering wheel.
  Smiling softly, you look through the smoke stained windows of Eddie’s van up at the big brick house. He wasn’t kidding, Steve lived in a mansion compared to the small ranch style you had called home for the past few years.
  You scrunch up your nose, “jeez Steve couldn’t afford anything bigger than this? Must be going broke.” Your humor was coming back in small spurts and Eddie grinned ear to ear.
  “I know,” he agrees, throwing open his door and going around the front of the van to open yours, “.. ugly isn’t it? Poor bastard has no taste.” His smile is wide and toothy like it always was, but somehow more handsome. “This is okay right? I mean just gimme the word babe and we can stay with Wayne or somethin’.”
  Placing a rogue curl away from his face you twist it around your finger. You weren’t sure if you’d ever get used to the feeling of being his, but you couldn’t wait to start a new chapter in your life.
  “I’d live anywhere, as long as you’re with me,” you say sweetly.
  One of his big warm hands finds your cheek, wafting the familiar smell of old spice and Marlboros to you and bringing your face up to him, “you really are the most  beautiful girl, you know that right?”
  Steve and Leighanne had been expecting you, checking in with Eddie to make sure you would feel at home for your stay… however long that may turn out to be. They refused to accept any money from Eddie regarding rent. “It’s no good here Munson…Leighanne and I are just happy you two are safe.”
  “..and you sir,” you say, working your fingers along the cotton of his shirt, a smile pressed to your coy lips, “are so full of shit.”
  His eyebrows pull together and release once you stick out your tongue in a tease. A smirk replaces his concerned expression and he pulls you up into him.
  His lips enclose yours and you can’t stop the smile spreading across them.
  “You ready, baby?”
  For the first time in three months, you had something to smile about, to look forward to, but the weeks leading up to this were not paved in gold.
——
  Eddie paced the tiles of the waiting room, nails bitten and bleeding on his left hand, threads ripped and torn in the holes in his jeans. He was a wreck.
  The brief conversation with the doc while you were being prepped for surgery gave little to no relief. Few words sticking with him and running like ticker tape across a news station channel screen in his head.
   “high risk”
“Possible death during childbirth”
  He held your hand as long as he could before you were wheeled into the operating room, apologies falling from your lips, followed by screams of pain. Eddie was terrified but assured you everything would be okay. Even if his bravado was fake, his mask held strong on his features. Calming you instantly.
  He doesn’t break until the swinging doors close and he’s standing alone in the cold hallway, the pads of his fingers pressed to his lips. A silent scream trapped in his lungs. But the salt of his tears paint his face and wash away the mask, Awww
  He just got you back, and now your life possibly hung in the balance, again. He just found out he was going to be a dad, and now the baby he never got more than a week to love, was gone.
  Is this what it was to love him? Everyone he ever loved left in one way or another. The punishment of loving an unlovable man meant losing your life in terms of Eddie Munson.
  His mother.
His child.
  It was a curse. An eye for an eye. He had killed and now he was reaping what he sowed.
  What kind of sick twist of fate would allow this to happen? Would allow a pregnant woman to be beaten nearly to death? To have a child ripped from his mother as she took her final breath?
  Eddie started questioning everything he had ever done to deserve such cruelty bestowed onto the ones he cherished.
  What else was there to sacrifice? He’d gladly die if it meant bringing them back to him. He would take their place, cold and frigid in the ground, a soft pillow in a satin box. Six feet under.
  His fingers press into his eyes until he sees stars. The grief swallowing him whole into a tangled web of desperate pleas to a higher power he wasn’t even sure he believed in and mixed humidity from sweltering heat of hell.
  He wasn’t strong enough for this. And if you died during the procedure? He’d certainly crawl up and perish like the weak man he was.
  His boots are heavy and squeak annoyingly all the way to the empty waiting room. The calming color scheme offers nothing but a chilled brush of fear to his neck as he fishes out a quarter from his pocket when he gets to the pay phone. Messages scratched against the paint, “welcum to h3ll” “pray for me” “for a good time call Barb”.
  His fingers find home on the silver buttons, clicking the number to the plant where Wayne works, only dialed when he was in too deep.
The monotonous dial tone seemed to go on forever, before a gruff voice out of breath voice answered, “this is Earl.”
  Eddie kept his composure through the four word sentence asking if Wayne Munson was there. A grumbled remark and a slam onto the metal counter echoed through the receiver.
  Seconds turned to minutes and minutes fade to what felt like hours before the familiar calloused tongue rang through the other end. The dam Eddie was holding back broke as Wayne said his name, and through one sob after another Wayne told him to hold tight and he’d be right there.
  Wayne left the plant in record speed. Grease smearsleft washed clean down his face from the tears that fell on the drive from the plant to the hospital, breaking all laws to get to there as fast as he could.
  When Eddie’s eyes met Wayne’s he sobbed like a child. Clutching onto the man’s work uniform like it was the only comfort he had ever been offered.
  A lifetime's worth of tears stream down the Munson’s faces. And Wayne eases Eddie into a chair in the waiting room.
  “She’ll be alright, Ed.” Wayne offers, a rough comforting hand rubbing Eddie’s shoulder, “she’s a tough one.”
  Eddie shakes his head, “she shouldn’t have to be,” his hands cover his face, he’d take the pain for you if he could, “if I would have told her sooner… if I didn’t freak her out when I did, m— fuck.. maybe, none of this would have happened.”
  He had run a million and one scenarios over and over in his head on how this could have been changed if he could turn back the time and do things differently.
  Wayne drags a rough hand down his face, smearing the grease from the machines at work and scratching the itch is his wiry unshaven face. To him, Eddie was still that same little boy, eyes bigger than the moon, and the weight of it all on his shoulders.
  “Son, I know this is hard, but you gotta stop and think for a minute. Ain’t no way tellin’ if this could’ve been prevented.” He stops to clear his throat, years of cigarette smoke raw on his throat.
  “Sounds like that som bitch was keepin’ her on a tight leash, just waiting’ on her to be alone.” Eddie winced at Wayne’s honesty, had Chad really been in the shadows? He keeps going, “You gotta open your eyes and realize what you do have and stop frettin’ bout woulda coulda shoulda.”
  Eddie hung his head low, shoulders shaking with every sob he willed to swallow down, “I didn’t— fuck man, I didn’t even get a chance to love my own kid— and n— I promised myself I wouldn’t end up like him.”
  He regrets it before he’s even done saying it. Truth was, he loved that baby the minute the nurse blurted out to a room full of friends that you were pregnant. He was heartbroken that he never got to shatter the Munson reputation and show himself and this fucking town how good he could raise a child.
  Wayne nearly jumped out of his overalls with fury at Eddie’s speech, “Did you hurt that girl? Nearly kill her and your own blood? Out of some jealous whiskey infused rage?”
  “No,” Eddie says, knowing he’s being scolded for saying something as dumb as what he just did.
  “Your daddy was meaner than a Texas rattle snake. Fucker didn’t have a good bone in his body—mama always said he was born like that. Piss and vinegar blooded.” Wayne shakes his head at his own childhood memories of a brother who showed no remorse. “You think I’m yellow bellied enough to raise a man just like ‘im? Boy I thought you knew better than that.”
  Eddie shrugs his shoulders and wipes a traitorous tear away.
  “That,” Wayne says pointing to Eddie’s face, “you might have the Munson last name but son you are so much like your mama, think that som bitch ever shed a tear over someone other than ‘imself? Think again, boy.”
  Eddie looks at Wayne through thick wet lashes.
  “You’ll be a good daddy when the time is right. These are the cards you’re dealt with and they ain’t all pretty right now, but hell, a full house ain’t nothin but a few cards that look the same, no royalty needed.”
  The hillbilly way of explaining things was Wayne’s greatest achievement, it gave Eddie a sense of calm, understanding. He was a good man. He had proved that time and time again. But hearing it and believing it— were on two different plains.
  Dr. Newby found Eddie in the waiting room with Wayne, hung head down and knees bouncing. He had explained that everything went as well as it could have. You were stable.
  Wayne asked the questions that Eddie couldn’t pluck the letters to form the words to generate the sentences to ask. He clung to the fact that you were in stable condition.
  Fading in and out to catch bits of the doctor’s answers.
  “The last ultrasounds she had done when she arrived here, showed a very irregular and faint heartbeat….body was in shock and the stress and trauma put her into early labor…”
  “…there was never a guarantee that the baby would have even survived to the end of this week.”
  The only question Eddie could muster, “when can I see her?”
  The effects of the anesthesia wore off, dwindling like dandelion heads in the breeze in the summer. Blown away slow and easy.
  You wished you could float on one of them, gentle and sweet fluttering around and not having a care in the world. Blown by a sharp gust of wind and landing daintily somewhere new, spreading the seeds of your fortune to a new land.
  But the cold press of sheets and steel sides of the hospital bed bring you back to reality.
  Not wanting to open your eyes and face the true cusp of the hell you were stuck in. Not wanting to see those same dark eyes swell with tears. Eddie’s heart ache seeped into your own, pulling the threads of the sewn stitches around it with each wet tear that fell down his face.
  Would you ever bring him something other than turmoil? Could he find peace with you? The devil himself laughed at your pleads and you didn’t blame him.
  You needed only a few more seconds, minutes, to yourself. Collecting your thoughts and trying to be strong for him.
  He had promised to never stop loving you— would he still? Would he be able to look at you the same? Love you the same?
  The comfort of your closed eyelids proved better than facing what lay ahead. But you couldn’t hide from him forever.
  The void was suffocating, emptiness choking you and leaving you a shell of yourself, but it all faded away when you opened your eyes, and saw him.
  —
Upon waking you both sobbed into one another, mourning the loss of the little family you both so desperately craved to belong too.
  “I’m sorry Eddie, I’m so so sorry.” you had cried into his shirt.
  Eddie held you to his chest, his arms holding you tight and his chin rested on the top of your head. “None of that, angel girl, you hear me?” He prodded, shattering the doubt and guilt from your mind, “we have each other, always.”
  Days after, your body still felt hollow, empty and sunken. And the stress you had endured hung like a gown on a poorly constructed hanger around you. A dark cloud.
  The doubt and demon truths sauntered their way back into your mind. Lies of telling you Eddie didn’t love you, didn’t care about you, could never be with someone responsible for what happened to his child or himself.
  That was when the nightmares started.
  —
  “She seems good today,” Nancy chirps, her stylish heels click against the sidewalk outside of Roane County hospital, Jonathan keeping up with her quickened pace, holding his fingers tight between hers, thankful for every single day that she chose him, no matter his faults.
  Eddie walked them out to their car, the sunny April morning brought birds and the promise of spring, “she’s always happy to see familiar faces, you’re like a sister to her.”
  Nancy smiles with tears in her pale blue eyes, “she’s like a sister to me too, Eddie.”
  “So you guys are staying with Steve and his girlfriend?” Jonathan asks, wrapping his arms behind Nancy and resting his chin on her shoulder.
  Eddie sighs and leans a denim hip onto Nancy’s car, his arms crossed over his chest, a weighty sigh falls from his lips, “yeah, for a bit at least. I don’t want her to go back into that house.”
  “Oh absolutely not,” Nancy agrees, nodding along, her curls bouncing, voice small, “I didn’t want to mention this to Tooty, but my mom and dad, and Jonathan’s mom and Hopper volunteered to clean it. Rip out the carpets, replace what’s broken—whatever needs to be done.”
  Eddie is stunned at the support, but feels guilty all the same, “they don’t have to do that, I— once she’s clear to go home I’m gonna go over there and clean it all up myself.”
  His heart ached and burned with the thought of being handed more charity.
  “Dude, Jonathan started, “you’re our friends, we’re here to help, so let us.”
  An exasperated breath leaves Eddie’s mouth, vibrating his lips on the way out, “alright.”
  He’s overcome with emotion at the sentiment, and almost bites his lip in half to stop the flood of overwhelming tears from bursting.
  “Now the only thing to figure out is… would you both move back in there?” Nancy asks timidly, her features soft and concerning, skirting on frazzled nerves, “Steve said something about finding someone to rent it out, that way she could have some sort of income..”
  “I knew a guy from the paper who needed a place to live, but when I mentioned the house…he uh— well he quickly found something else,” Jonathan muttered partly into Nancy’s collar, “ arms tightening around her slender waist.
  No doubt finding someone to rent the house would be difficult. The entire town was still reeling with what happened, somehow the only thing that anyone seemed to care about was Chad’s death. Never mind his crimes.
  Eddie’s head spins, a headache brewing between his brow, and he closes his eyes to push it away.
  “No rush!” Nancy says, her hand laying gently on Eddie’s arm, “we will all get it figured it out, okay?” The blue of her eyes twinkling with a pure presence of honesty, and hope. “Just focus on our girl in there, she really seemed to be doing well today.”
  Most days he looked haggard, dark circles colored his under eyes, worry streaking down his face in thick fatigue, still he pushed forward, bit the bullet and attended therapy sessions with you for domestic violence survivors, and his own sessions for a fancy named disorder he didn’t care to understand.
  He’d take care of you just like he promised.
  Eddie opens his eyes and forces a smile, “Night and day difference compared to how she was the day of,” his dark blood shot eyes swim with his admission, “but we’re hopeful.. I mean things can only get better right?”
  —
  The first night at your new temporary place was perfect. You and Eddie were both welcomed with open arms literally, from both Steve and Leighanne. They showed you around, telling you everything that polite and generous hosts would.
  After bringing in the few bags and boxes in from the van that were deemed needed and not marked to be brought to storage, your hosts leave you and Eddie alone for time to unpack and relax.
  Time that you both took advantage of by immediately stretching out and taking a nap in the big king bed you had shared all those months ago. A bittersweet nostalgic memory, tinged with pain.
  The love that was made, the life that was created—seemed like a different life time ago. Trauma and stress had changed you both.
  And when you wept, Eddie held you close, his own tears tickled your hairline, and you both held onto the promise of unspoken devotion and undying love for one another to get through to another day.
  When you woke from your slumber, Eddie wasn’t in the bed, and it left you in a small state of panic. The unfamiliar walls closing in like a trap. And you used your therapist’s tips to ground yourself; the repeated mantra, the breathing exercises, and if necessary, a shower to metaphorically rinse your mind of unwanted thoughts.
  Finding the toiletries in your bag, you pad across the hall and step into the tiled shower. The hot steam coaxing the pressure off your chest. Relaxation floods your body almost instantly.
  A soft knock on the door followed by Eddie’s voice, quiet and calm. The drag of the shower curtain brings your eyes up to find Eddie on the opposite side, “you okay?”
  He was gentle, always. And you nodded. You would be okay, you would always be okay with him. Nobody ever made you feel safe like he did.
  An unspoken agreement that neither of you were ready for anything intimate, seemed to break. Seeing him in light other than the harsh fluorescent ones in the hospital had you reaching for him.
  His hooded eyes understood, and he pulled his shirt over his head, catching on the cast on his right arm.
  He was beautiful, the dark lines of tattoos and smearing bruises complimented his pale skin, and a deep feeling flooded you. Only having felt it once before, the night of his concert… right before he kissed you.
  The wet tile warmed his toes as he slid in beside you. Facing you and forgoing the doctors orders of not getting his cast wet, he asks just like he did that night.
  Sharing kisses in the hospital and holding each other in the hospital was the most intimate you had been since that night.
  And something that brought fear was once again replaced by the gentle touch of his hand. Running down the expanse of your back. Fingers moving down your spine in memory. His forehead pressed to yours.
  “You’re perfect,” he soothes, running his fingers around  to intertwine with yours, “I’m so goddamn in love with you.”
  The tears tread down your cheeks, and he kisses them away, making your heart swell, and you muster out a blubbery, “I love you more.”
  You both stand and hug until the water chills. Exiting the shower and wiping the condensation from the mirror.
  The swelling around your face had gone down significantly, and even though you didn’t recognize yourself, Eddie reassured you that you were the most beautiful girl in the world.
  “My girl,” he promised.
  The days got easier, friends visited and cheered you both up. The hope for a better tomorrow came with the sun and pressed daintily on your skin, healing wounds deep within that in the early days of waking up screaming, you weren’t sure you would ever come back to see again.
  —
“Does Eddie like tomatoes?”
  The large knife moves through the juicy tomato with ease under Steve’s hand. You were perched on an expensive barstool, elbow digging into the granite counter tops as he prepped the salad for tonight’s dinner.
  A smirk licks your lips, “no, he claims he’s allergic; calls them ‘ketchup testicles’”.
  Steve cocks an eyebrow and blows a raspberry, “What a moron.”
  “You don’t have to cook for us, y’know?” you say, picking the dry skin from your lip.
  He shrugs, “it’s just a little salad, Leighanne made the alfredo lastnight, and if I follow the instructions right,” he says picking up a piece of notebook paper, including little hearts you can see through at the bottom in a very pretty cursive handwriting, “we’ll just have to heat er up.” Steve says, pushing a rogue hair from his forehead, “besides, I actually like to cook; she spoils me and doesn’t let me help.”
  “I’m happy for you,” you say with a small smile, “you deserve it.”
  “She’s the one,” Steve grins, love sick pupils widening at the thought of her, “but hey, you and Eddie finally pulling your heads out of your asses is the real winner— should have slapped you both for being so damn dumb.”
  The middle finger you hold in the air just makes Steve laugh.
  Who knew the prince of rebellion and chaos wore his heart on a leather sleeve only for you? The blinders you wore to convince yourself it wasn’t real were finally tossed aside.
  He loved you, and you loved him. End of story.
  Before you could answer, the mayor of mayhem announced himself back from work, keys jingling and whistling a tune you didn’t recognize. And when his dark eyes catch yours, they swim and shimmer in adoration.
  Dimpled cheeks dip onto his toothy smile, “there’s my pretty girl,” he sings, coming behind you and hugging your waist. The smell of cigarettes and motor oil stuck on his curls. Chapped lips on your temple, “how was your day?... you okay?”
  Eddie hated leaving you alone, taking his lunch break to come back to the big house and check on you, using his smoke breaks to call whenever he could.
  You nod into him, “better now,” leaning your head back to press your lips to kiss.
  An annoyed groan follows from across the kitchen island, “let’s keep it PG in here okay? I know you guys finally admitted you love eachother but that doesn’t mean I want to see all of that.”
  Eddie’s chuckle fans over your cheeks and he answers Steve but his eyes lock on yours, “big talk for a guy who could make a deaf man blush.”
  Steve guffaws and stops slicing, “and what’s that supposed to mean?”
  Eddie grins and whispers finally looking away from you, “Quiet neighborhood… thin walls… you wouldn’t even need to ask who occupies this house with the way Steve whimpers Leighanne’s name… every night, they’re like rabbits.”
  You both giggle at Steve’s expense when his cheeks turn crimson and the tomatoes he’s cutting end up mutilated.
  —
Living with Steve and Leighanne was surprisingly easy. Their routines stayed the same, and Eddie went back to
work for Boom after you had settled in.
  He was a saint.
  He held you when the nightmares started again. Sweat pooling on your shirt waking only to find Eddie’s arms wrapped tight around you tethering you back to reality when his thumbs swept over your cheeks, and his lips kissed away your tears. Quiet whispers and soft hums of his voice lulled you  as he pulled you deeper into him.
  Eddie and Steve kept up the light jokes and cracks at one another all the time. it was good to be around close friends and laugh again— something both you and Eddie had missed desperately.
  Laying in bed one night, you walk your fingers up his bare chest tracing the lines of his tattoos, snuggled up into his side like a cat.
  His nails scratch at the fabric on your hips, “still not used to how good it feels to stretch out like this,” Eddie exhales, “I don’t know about you sweeteheart, but one more night in that hospital bed and I was going to ask Dr. Newby for fucking life alert.”
  You giggle into his smooth skin, “twenty-six with life alert? Gonna thread that onto your pick chain necklace huh?”
  “Shit,” Eddie chuckles, “I’d make it look so good babe, Ozzy himself would start wearing one.”
  Hearing him joke around was a huge win. His bruises were fading too. But his wounds were deeper, wedged into the grim corners of his mind. Keeping him up most nights, afraid of falling asleep.
  But each day the sun rose following the pattern of the moon, and another day passed.  Eddie started sleeping at night again, your nightmares dormant. Medicine and therapy working into the perfect cocktail to deter his own demons.
  The two of you clung together. Molded into one another like playdoh, forming a new hue after mixing your colors together. It changed with your moods, vibrant and sunny on good days and moody and dark on the bad ones. Interconnected by the fragile trauma that weaved its way into your life.
  The laughing fit you are both in is partly from lack of sleep, but feels too damn good to stop. Snorting and dripping tears from your eyes, your roars turn to giggles and hiccups as you wipe your eyes.
  “Didn’t know if I’d ever hear that again,” Eddie admits while rubbing your side, placing a kiss on your head.
  You lean on his chest and look deep into his coal eyes.
  “We’ve been to hell and back, babe… but with you, it’s, I don’t know… I just know that we will be okay, does that make sense? I’m not worried about anything because I have you, and I couldn’t do any of this without you Eddie, and I mean that. You’re all I’ve got.”
  Eddie rolls you over and tucks a wet lock of hair behind your ear, “I’d do it all again if I knew I’d end up with you as my girl.”
  The tears start but they aren’t sad, they’re slow and happy, grateful for having him in your life. He wipes your tears and kisses you softly, humming the same song he sang like an idiot to you in your car all those months ago.
  The calloused hearted trailer park prince had won over the icy soul of that stubborn mouthy girl. A perfect pair, tarnished crowns and stitched lips.
  To hell and back.

Fearless
New story that I had in my WIPS lets see if theres any interest lol.
Tumblr media
The water from the chasm was pouring down into the abyss below, sprinkles of the coolness hitting your face as you waited. Below people were starting to stir, leaving their rooms to find their way to the small shops or cafeteria. From your spot high on the wall they looked like ants, of course you weren't supposed to be up here..
Max would scalp you if he saw you. It was a tricky climb to this little alcove, the wall was wet from the waterfall next to it. Small little holes for your hands and feet, people such as Eric never would be able to make it. Even if he could he was too scared to try. That's why it was your favorite place in all of Dauntless.
"You better get down, Girl.. You gotta get to the train." A voice called from the ledge below, when you looked down you saw the person who was like a mother too you. Her hair slicked back, tattoos on display with a soft smile on her sharp face.
Tori.
She was and is the only person who ever looked out for you. Told you that you were strong, strong enough to face the trails as an initiate. Strong enough to get your first tattoo, strong enough when you got your ears pierced. Strong enough when Max ranked you in third when you should've been in second.
She was there the day you almost died at the hands of your 'friends'. There every day of your recovery. And there even now that you were one of the strongest, still in your corner even if you didn't need her.
Little did she know you would always need her.
Slipping down the wall, you could almost hear her eyes roll as you let go off the wall. The seconds of free fall giving you the little boost you need to make it through the day. When your booted feet meet the narrow walkway that has no rails, you turn to look at your mother figure. Confirming the eye roll you figured would be happening.
Smiling widely at her as she loops her arm through yours, pulling you down the walkway. You could tell she had something to say, she always said that you were one of the few people who could read her like a book. You also knew if she was waiting then it was important and needed to be private.
That proved to be true as she pulled you into the tattoo parlor, back into her room closing and locking the door before leaning against it. You stood hands folded together in front of her, waiting for whatever it was she was going to tell you. When she opened her eyes, your heart dropped, the line of tears waiting there was something you hadn't seen in two years.
Since the day after she administered your test.. Since the day she watched you roll off the net after jumping. You stepped closer to her, using your hands to rub her arms slowly as she took a few deep breaths. "Theres another of you.. Shes almost as.... strong.. as you.."
You felt all the muscles in your body freeze, you knew what she meant by 'strong'.
Divergent.
Before you could start asking questions the speakers turned on and announced that the trains into the city would be leaving soon. Both of your heads turned back to each other, her hands grabbing you as you had her. "I told her to stay with the Stiffs.. But I have a feeling shes too much like someone else I know."  She had a soft smile on her face as her hands moved to your face, cupping both of your cheeks.
"If she chooses Dauntless.. You have to protect her as I have you.. As we both have Uriah.. Promise me Y/n." Tori begged, you knew there was no way you could say no. Even though you wanted too. Protecting one Divergent along with yourself was going to be enough work, now there was someone almost as fucked up as you? And shes a stiff??
You let out the breath you didn't realize you were holding as she leaned your forehead against her own. The buzzer went off again, you knew you were going to be questioned for being late. So you pulled away opening the door as Tori moved, pausing only to turn back and look at her. She had risked so much for you, how could you tell her no?
"Ill do what I can. But I wont risk myself or Uriah for someone, Zeke is one of my best friends. Riah is like a little brother too me, but I will do what I can. I promise Mom."
~~
The entire train ride your stomach was in knots, bile heavy in your chest. Not only from not eating breakfast but from nerves. You watch Uriah talk and goof off with the other 16 year olds. You knew this was a big day for all of them, some would be coming home with you and some you would never speak too again. You couldn't help but wonder who would be going where, you remembered you own Choosing Ceremony.
The day that you left Amity behind.
Really nobody was surprised, you had never fit in there. Members of Amity are dedicated to peacefulness, kindness, forgiveness, trust, self-sufficiency, and neutrality. They are slow to anger and yet quick to forgive. None of which you are. You still held grudges from when you were five and your use to be brother ate the last pumpkin cake.
No.. Amity was not where you belonged. While you did miss the rolling fields, and the openness of having the outdoors right there. You were constantly in trouble, always being chastised and then forgiven for everything.
"Do not run through Y/n, we are all trying to meditate."
" Do not you think it would be kinder to offer the last one to someone older, maybe even younger? Be kinder Y/n."
"Dont worry young one, I forgive you for your stubbornness."
It was exhausting being there, the peacefulness and trust was all you missed. You were self-sufficient enough, part of being in Dauntless was being able to carry out orders without needing supervision. But you are quick to anger, slow to forgive and definitely biased.
The kids started yelping as the city came into view, most readying themselves to jump. It was then you noticed the two standing near the back. They looked around at there friends, the girl whos name you couldn't remember caught your eye. Her face paling before you sent her a small smile, making your way over to her.
Your voice was low, so low only she could hear you as you stood behind her. "Make the choice thats right for you. This is forever, dont think about anyone else. Just yourself. It'll be ok, I promise."
You could read the surprise on her face as you pushed her towards the door, where everyone was already jumping. A quick somersault was all you registered as you stood walking with the group towards the building. Your eyes scan the crowd like you would be able to spot the girl Tori told you about.
The Stiffs would already be in the building, walking up the stairs like the selfless people they are. 'Fuck that' You thought as you and Zeke broke from the group towards the front doors. The two of you were stationed outside, to make sure everything ran smoothly. That no one would come in and interrupt the ceremony once it started. You wanted to watch now that you knew what was happening, but it was too late.
Plus who better to work with than your best friend? The hours this would take would go by quickly by his side. The only person you would trade him for was Four, and really he wouldn't be good conversation here. You knew his father was in there, that would mean he would shut down and be rude.
He would be short and disgruntle. Which is why the last two times this had happened he stayed behind, ready to watch the first jump.
Inside you could hear them starting, "Decades ago our ancestors realized that it is not political ideology, religious belief, race, or nationalism that is to blame for a warring world. Rather, they determined that it was the fault of human personality—of humankind's inclination toward evil, in whatever form that is. They divided into factions that sought to eradicate those qualities they believed responsible for the world's disarray." Marcus started.
Your eyes rolled as you held your gun tightly, you had only heard this speech three times but it wore on your nerves. Before you could even think about how disrespectful it might be you started mocking him.
"ThOsE wHo BlAmEd AgGrEsSiOn FoRmEd AmItY."
Zeke followed directly after you, proving yet again why he was your best friend. "ThOsE wHo BlAmEd IgNoRaNcE bEcAmE tHe ErUdItE."
You both shook your head and chuckled, "Seriously, he needs to revamp his speech. Its getting old, like they dont learn about all that in school no matter the faction." Shifting from foot too foot you could feel yourself getting restless. You were good at following orders, but today something just felt off.
Zeke noticed almost immediately, you were antys. Moving around constantly, fingers tapping on the butt of your gun. Your face flush and slightly red like you were sweating. "Are you good? Because you look like your going to pass out." He said in a concerned tone, there was no judgement there like there would be with some others.
You cracked your neck, willing yourself to calm the hell down. Planting your feet and finding your stance you nodded once. "Yeah I didn't sleep well last night" ..Not a lie.. "I always get worried that I'll see my brother here and he will give me that judgy Erudite stare.. " Again not a lie.. Ok not a complete lie.
You really didn't care about any of Amity's opinions of you. The people whose feelings you cared about you could count on one hand. But for some reason the stare that your brother always gave you, even before you turned 16, always made your stomach turn. Like he knew something you didn't. Like he was disgusted by you.
Zeke shook his head "I know that's not the reason, but Ill let it go. Just know I'm always here if you need to talk."  Silence fell between you two, you couldn't thank him for not pushing because that would confirm his doubts. After what felt like days the doors open and the few leaders are followed out by those who have chosen the fearless life you have.
Your eyes stay straight ahead as they all file pass you, walking behind the group where Zeke is in the middle. It isn't hard to pick out the Stiff, taking small but quick steps trying to keep up the kids who are whooping and smiling. Its always easy to pick out the transfers, of course the plain grey dress thing shes wearing helps.
Your feet move closer to her without you telling them too. Your lungs are pulling in air to speak even though your brain is telling you too shut up.. You made a promise, one that you unwilling would keep.
"Dont look at me.. Keep your eyes forward and your mouth closed. Just listen."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The blond girl next to you jumped as you spoke, clearly caught off guard. Either by you speaking to her in general or the tone that was clear even in whispers. Your grip on your weapon tightened as you tried to find the will to be reassuring like Tori was.
"Follow what the Dauntless born do. Don't hesitate when jumping on the train or you'll die." Great job y/n.. That was reassuring.."When we get to headquarters, when they ask for jumpers.. volunteer before the others. Dont ask questions, dont look for help.. Just do as I say and it will be fine.."
You didn't even look at her or give her the chance to respond before you started running. Didn't look back to see if she was running, or if she was falling behind. In no way would you allow it too look like you were helping her, because in the long run that would only make it worse. For both of you.
"What the hell is going on?" A transfer boy yells as people start passing him. You shake your head and wonder if these kids even know who they are joining. Had they ever watched the Dauntless? Did they know anything besides that the motto said?
We believe in freedom from fear, in ordinary acts of bravery, in defending those who cannot defend themselves.
Did they think that being part of this group came easily? That they would just walk into headquarters and be handed a gun and a job? Zeke was next to you jogging as the train horn sounded behind you. Jumping on and off things was one of his favorite things too do, anyone could see it in the way his face lite up.
"Oh no," mumbles the Erudite boy. "Are we supposed to hop on that thing?"
You hear the Stiff mumble "yes" and feel the tiniest bit better. Maybe she wouldn't be so bad, maybe she knew a little about what was about to happen. But it didn't mean she was prepared for the amount of lying that she was going to have to do. Dauntless begin to pile in, group by group, until only the new initiates are left. The Dauntless-born initiates are used to doing this by now, so in a second it's just faction transfers left.
You watch as they all start to panic, running next to the car you're in. You placed yourself in the last one, where all the others were in the first two. You watched them make it in one by one, the Stiff almost falling off. Had it not been from the girl from Candor she wouldn't have made it. You all watch A short Erudite boy with red hair pumps his arms as he tries to catch up to the train. An Erudite girl by the door reaches out to grab the boy's hand, straining, but he is too far behind. He falls to his knees next to the tracks as we sail away, and puts his head in his hands.
You should feel bad. Hes just failed the first test, hes now factionless. Less than thirty minutes after making his choice he has failed. But you know deep down its for the best, this is the easy part. If he couldn't make it onto the train what you and Four have planned for training would've killed him.
You listen to the Cador girl and the Abnegation girl talk, watch as she sits down and then instructs the other girl too. It is that moment you see her divergence. A true Dauntless would stay standing, be unafraid of the wind. Would find a way to show courage in the face of the speeding train and whipping wind.
This is going to be so much harder than you think, so much worse than you had planned. Thankfully Uriah was only a little divergent. His would be easy to hide, this girl.. Beatrice.. She would cause problems, problems you had already promised to try and solve.
 "I guess we are going to Dauntless headquarters," She says after the other girl Christina speaks, "but I don't know where that is."
"Does anyone?" Christina shakes her head, grinning. "It's like they just popped out of a hole in the ground or something." You chuckle and cross your arms, pulling their attention towards you but you just keep looking out the train doors. If only they knew, you kinda do pop out of holes.
Then the wind rushes through the car, and the other faction transfers, hit with bursts of air, falling on top of one another. You pinch the bridge of your nose, sighing through it. "Pathetic" You say loud enough for them all to hear, Christina scoffs along with the tall boy from Candor. The rest smartly stay quiet, Beatrice's eyes falling on you silently.
"Arent you supposed to be like.. guiding us or something?" He says from his place on the floor, it's your turn to scoff. Turning back to the door grabbing the railing and leaning out, you hear the transfers gasp assuming you're going to fall. Like you haven't done this a million times, none of them know if you're a transfer or not. Younger kids don't go to the ceremony, they would have no idea if you were Dauntless born or not.
In the cars ahead you could see those your age looking back at you.  Zeke, Eric and Shauna all smiling knowing what was coming next. The roof came into view as you all pulled back into the cars, you could hear the Dauntless born whooping again. Turning back to the transfers you smiled, before locking eyes with Beatrice. They were all standing now, frantically talking amongst themselves about jumping.
"Good luck" was all you said before running and throwing yourself from the train.
Luffy
You met Luffy when you were flying before you were forcefully pulled down to the deck of the Thousand Sunny. Luffy had thought you were some large bird and was disappointed when he realized you weren’t edible.
You were dazed and disoriented when you looked up at Luffy and the other crewmembers who had flocked around the deck to gawk at you. After getting a good look at you, Luffy picked you up and without missing a beat asked you to join his crew. The rest of the crew all screamed at him which freaked you out and you tried to fly off.
“Hey! Where you going?” You heard someone shout before being grabbed by your ankle and pulled back down to the deck. Your head was throbbing from that second pull and was being made worse by Nami screaming at Luffy to be nice to you.
Again, Luffy asked you to join his crew before Nami hit him on the head. Nami apologized to you and simply offered for you to stay on the ship while you orientate yourself.
During your “recovery” time though the crew manages to charm you enough to stay for a little while longer. After fighting by their side during one of their adventures on some random-ass island, you decide to officially join them.
The first few days you were on the ship, Luffy would come up behind you and just…grab them. After a few scoldings conversations about it, Luffy learned not just to grab them, but to at least make his presence known to you before doing so.
Sometimes if you’re on one side of the Sunny’s deck and he’s on the other, he’ll stretch his arm (or arms) out and tap your shoulder before stroking your wings.
He really just can’t help himself tbh. They’re just so soft!
Once you become more comfortable with it, Luffy likes to just play with your wings. Stuff like opening and closing them or carding through the individual feathers with his fingers while you’re busy doing something else.
Luffy loves to just watch you move around sometimes since your wings have a life of their own. Like when you bend over to pick something up your wings stretch out just a little bit to help keep you balance.
You eventually became comfortable enough to let Luffy pet your wings when the crew is enjoying some downtime. Ya’ll will be sitting somewhere near the Sunny’s railing and Luffy will be stroking your feathers with a surprising amount of delicacy.
You quickly become one of Luffy’s favorite playmates without even trying. Whenever you're playing a game of tag your movements make you someone very hard to tag.
Luffy likes to ask a lot of questions about your wings and what you are. His curiosity knows no bounds and that’s reflected in his well-intended but sometimes rude queries.
You are also one of the first people Luffy goes to when he wants to spar which is few and far in between. He finds that you are a very capable fighter and have a very unique style. When you move your body, your movements are smooth as silk and you are able to contort it in many different ways, similar to his in a way. He finds fighting against you to be a very unique challenge.
Whenever your wings are molting, you don’t let Luffy help you preen them, but you do give the nicer feathers from your wings to him, and my God does he love them. He tucked one of them in the ribbon of his straw hat and showed it off proudly to the rest of the crew and no you’re not crying-
BEGS you to take him flying with you. You say no every time for fear of dropping him in the ocean. You wouldn’t mind doing it if he just didn’t squIRM SO MUCH.
Luffy KNOWS that you can carry him in the air since you’ve grabbed him before in the middle of fights and placed him somewhere else so he pesters you every day about it.
Knowing that you can carry him, he would purposely get into tight situations in battle so you would swoop down and fly him to safety.
Talking about combat as well, Luffy is mildly surprised at how fast you can move about the field, slipping and zooming between targets in an instant. He also took note of your strength and how much of a punch you pack despite your dainty stature.
He once watched you kick a guy square in the face and he went flyyyyyying (no pun intended). The moment he saw that guy’s body sore through the air he thought to himself, “Yup, I picked out another great crewmember!”
Overall, he’s thrilled to have someone so unique on his crew and is obsessed with the way that you are just…you. Luffy has good taste in picking out his crew and you are no exception.
Zoro
Zoro had found you by complete accident. He had gotten lost on one of the many islands the straw hats visited in the Grand Line and accidentally ran into you.
At first, he thought you were someone who had fallen from Skypeia, but after noting just how large your wings are compared to those on Skypeia he thinks to ask, to which you explain you’re not from there.
He’s quick to ask for directions and you gladly help him all the while you two are chatting as you lead him back to his ship. The moment Luffy spots you with Zoro you immediately become an official crew member you don’t have a choice.
Zoro never really asks where you’re from or what you are. He’s more interested in who you are and wants to know you personally. Considering he’s a part of a crew that has several devil fruit users, he starts to care less about others' abilities and looks and focuses more on their character.
Zoro is pretty indifferent about the whole wings thing tbh. He thinks they look nice and all, but it doesn’t really change his opinion of you either way.
But don’t take it the wrong way like he’s disinterested; He’s that way with everyone.
He does enjoy laying against/on them when you two take naps together on the ship. They’re so soft and smell -- while not necessarily good -- nice; they smell like you, and he finds comfort in that.
Zoro only ever asked you once to touch your wings. It was late at night and you had decided to join him in looking out since you couldn’t sleep. You’re sure he had been drinking. He was very quiet when he asked you, almost as if he didn’t want you to hear him.
The rough callouses on his hands ticked as they carded through your feathers and you stifled a small giggle at the sensation. He made only one comment about how soft they were. Slowly you found yourself drifting to sleep as his fingers methodically brushed your wings.
The two of you ended up falling asleep together. Zoro’s head rested against your shoulder as you wrapped him in the warmth of your wing. When you woke up in the morning, Zoro was gone :(
Zoro doesn’t take care of his personal hygiene that well (this guy showers like, what, once every week? Stinky…) so he doesn’t really help you preen your wings when you’re molting. Or anytime really tbh.
And if you’re being honest, he wouldn’t really be that good at it either. He would pull on the wrong ones and be rough when pushing feathers out of the way to pluck others. He wouldn’t mean to hurt you, he’s just not good at delicate work like that.
He doesn’t really collect your feathers like some of the others, but he does keep one of the really long-flight feathers that you gave him. He has it stashed in the Crow’s Nest (he thought it funny to keep your feather in the “Crows Nest” since a crow is a bird and birds have feathers…Just don’t bring it up to him bc he WILL get embarrassed).
Never asks you to take him flying with you, which you’re grateful for. He’s so dense with muscle that you don’t think you could actually fly with him. Plus, Luffy’s begging is enough lmao.
In battle, he expected you to be fast and light, but wasn’t expecting you to be such a hard hitter, you know? He thought you’d have a lighter punch given the whole “angelic” thing you have going on but no, his eyes widened when he watched you absolutely deck this buff-ass dude into the dirt.
Like this man’s whole head was stuck in the dirt and he struggled to pull it out. Zoro was honestly shocked you hadn’t busted his skull open from the impact of such a hit.
If you ever decide to take up swordsmanship, Zoro is glad -- and even a little excited -- to teach you. Just know that he doesn’t take it lightly and, while firm, is a reasonable instructor. He would also encourage you to try out different techniques that are unique to you and that may match your fighting style and mobility better.
Maybe using your flight would help with sweeping attacks? Zoro doesn’t know, he leaves that up to you to figure out.
There was one time when he was knocked tf out in a long fight and you were the first thing he woke up to -- face pinched in worry and wings disheveled and dirty -- and he honestly thought he had died and gone to heaven, but you will NEVER hear him tell you about that.
Overall, Zoro is not that impressed by the fact you have wings but is instead impressed at how you use them to your and the crew’s benefit. He thinks of you as a very strong and reliable crew member and someone who is genuinely very kind to others.
Nami
The Straw Hats met you pretty early on in their journey at the Baratie. When Nami first saw you, a horrible thought ran through her head, that being she could possibly sell you as some kind of “exotic” item/person to pay off the debt to Arlong. However, she quickly pushed that thought out of her head and is somewhat disturbed at the fact that she ever had that thought.
After Nami had stolen the Going Merry and returned to Cocoyasi Village, she was shocked to see you with the crew when they came to pick her up. She witnessed firsthand that day just how freakishly strong you are, having been able to beat the shit out of a Fishman by yourself.
You were the first person to greet her after she got her tattoo reworked. You expressed how relieved you were that she was okay, that you understood why she did what she did, and that you wouldn’t (couldn’t) hold it against her. It was during that conversation that she decided she belonged with the Straw Hats.
You two quickly become friends once ya’ll officially join the crew.
Whenever the crew docks on a new island, Nami LOVES to go shopping for items for you that would complement your wings. Clothes, jewelry, whatever, she loves to doll you up with or without your approval lol.
Along with clothes and jewelry, Nami also looks for good soaps and other hygiene products that are gentle on your feathers and skin, but keep them looking and smelling nice.
Nami often asks you for fashion advice. You don’t change your outfits nearly as often as she does, but you slay every single one you wear and she aspires to look as good as you.
Tbh, you don’t know what to say to her since she too also slays and you just throw things together without any particular process.
Nami was the first person on the crew to buy you a pair of padded gloves to protect your hands while fighting as she noticed the copious amount of bruises and cuts to your knuckles.
Depending on how much you already know and understand, Nami shows you how to budget money if you’re ever unsure how to do so.
Something Nami does for you is offer to hold your wings. Considering how large of a bust she had, she understands the most out of the whole crew how sore your back and shoulders become when carrying something heavy like that all day. Nami has you lean into her chest and relax your wings while she holds them at the base where they connect to your back. You are always grateful whenever she does this because holy shit your back feels so light.
She’ll also help you stretch them out whenever you need to. For example, she’ll grab the tip of your wings and pull them out, stretching them to their full span. Keeping them folded all day can lead to some crazy cramps.
Nami is always willing to help you preen your wings in the spots you can’t quite reach. Every time she helps you, she tells you how soft they are the whole time.
Nami collects the long, straight feathers that fall off and uses them to write with. It started when you gifted one of your long feathers to her and she kept it in the cup on her desk with all her other writing utensils. One day the quill she was using broke and, not wanting to buy another one, she improvised by using the one you gave her. She was shocked at how well it held up and how crisp the lines were and began asking you for more.
Much like other members of the crew, Nami WILL fall asleep cuddled into your wings if given the chance. But just like the other members of the crew, you never mind when she does :)
Nami never really asks for you to carry her while flying, mainly because she has a slight fear of heights, but you have flown with her on occasion. Whether it be recreationally or to move her out of harm's way, you try to stay as low as safely possible whenever you carry Nami.
Overall, Nami is not only mystified by your beauty and uniqueness but is also glad to have another strong fighter among the crew. She feels safe whenever you're near.
Usopp
So Usopp shot you out of the sky while the crew was sailing in the Grandline. He didn’t realize you were a person, he thought you were a large bird that Sanji could cook up for dinner! Imagine his surprise when you fell onto the deck and BOOM, a whole fucking person is lying there and, oh God are you dead?
Chopper was quick to tend to your wounds. Since Usopp had used a flame star on you, some of your feathers were singed on your left wing, which made it impossible for you to fly even if you wanted to until they grew back. Usopp stayed in the office while Chopper tended to you and waited for you to wake up. The moment you woke up in Chopper’s office you panicked; You screamed and threw anything you could get a hold of at the reindeer and Usopp before bolting for the door. You got out, but when you tried to take flight, you found that you were unable to. After falling to the deck a couple of times in a futile attempt to leave, you eventually accepted that you weren’t going anywhere.
Luffy offered you a spot as a part of the crew that day, but you were unsure. You eventually compromised on letting you stay on the ship until you dock on the next island, to which you could either leave or stay with the crew. Later on, you decided you would stay with them.
When given the chance, Usopp apologized PROFUSELY for shooting you. Like, he was on the ground crying, begging for forgiveness. Before anyone realized it, you had balled your hand up and punched Usopp in the stomach, sending him flying against the guardrail on the other side of their ship. Dazed, Usopp looked up at you as you approached him. Leaning down to face him, you said to him, “I forgive you,” and from then on out it was mostly smooth sailing between the two of you.
Usopp LOVES to draw up ideas on new items and weapons for you to use, either things that attach to your wings or that can be used by you while in flight.
Speaking of drawing, Usopp also loves to draw, just…you. You’re such a unique subject, possessing a silhouette unmatched by any other (with maybe the exception of the Skypia citizens, but even then their wings were not as large as yours). Usopp just thinks you’re pretty and he likes to draw pretty things :)
Usopp also taught you how to shoot with a slingshot. He figured that while you’re in the air you’d have a pretty clear shot of the battlefield, so you could offer aerial support for the Straw Hats.
He also looked into different fabrics and materials he could make new clothes for you out of; Something that was light and wouldn’t affect your flying, but something that was flame and puncture-resistant. With the help of Franky and Nami, he was able to sew something that provided you with a little more protection in combat than what you typically wear.
When you first asked Usopp to help preen your wings in the springtime, he refused immediately. It wasn’t because he didn’t want to help you, he just didn’t think he could do a good job at it. You assured him and told him you’d instruct him while he did it.
It took a while for him to figure out which feathers were ready to come out and which ones were still healthy and alive (He pulled out quite a few good flight feathers…ouch), but by the end of it, all your wings were healthy and shiny.
You told Usopp he could do whatever he wanted with the feathers and at first, he just kept them in a box in his workshop, not sure what to do with them but unable to just throw them out because, hello, they’re your feathers.
He tries to come up with inventions that could utilize them, but he has yet to design and sketch one up.
Usopp found out the hard way just how hard your punches hit. He also got to bear witness to it when the crew was fighting off another random pirate crew that thought they could cash in their bounty. Usopp was  s h o o k  when he watched you grab this pretty beefy pirate and just drag him to the fucking floor before beating the absolute shit out of him with your bare hands. Rest assured, he never doubted your capability in a fight after that.
Overall, Usopp is impressed, and somewhat scared, of your strength and just the general uniqueness that is you. He has just never met anyone like you before (until Skypia that is, but they’re not even as cool as you) and is always in awe of you.
Sanji
Oh, where to begin with this guy lmao…
You met Sanji allllll the way back at the Baratie. You had barely managed to escape the capture of a pirate crew that wanted to sell you and found yourself flying aimlessly over the sea, with no idea where you were or where you were going and starving. You stumbled across the Baratie by complete accident and once you realized that it was a restaurant, you practically ran through the doors.
You pleaded with the staff to give you anything to eat -- offering to clean dishes, dispose of trash, or be a bodyguard for the restaurant (that last one got a few laughs out of some of the staff) -- but without any money, you were quickly kicked out.
Before long, a pair of black dress shoes stood in front of where you lay on the ground and a plate of fried rice was placed in front of you. You gasped as you sat up and looked at the person who gave you the food. “No one deserves to starve. Especially someone as lovely as yourself,” He said to you.
From that day on, Sanji kept a close eye on you. Sanji let you stay and work with him -- with the approval of Zeff ofc -- so when he left to join the Straw Hat crew, you joined alongside him; Thankfully, Luffy didn’t have a problem with it.
Sanji makes special meals for you considering that you have a different diet from the other Straw Hats. If you ever tell him he doesn’t have to do that for you, he insists on making your meals with certain ingredients since he does the same for Chopper (considering he, as a reindeer, has a vegan diet and all).
You’re also the main person Sanji asks for help in the kitchen the very few times he ever asks for help. He has a lot of trust in your kitchen skill considering you worked with him for a short time.
Regardless of your gender or sex, Sanji is ALWAYS fawning over you. Are you hot? Here’s a cold, refreshing drink for you. Are you hungry for a snack? Sanji has already cut up a nice gala apple for you! Seriously, this man is just obsessed with you (in a good way, that is).
Like Nami, Sanji loves to go out and buy outfits for you. Dresses and skirts or suits and ties, whatever you want, Sanji will buy it for you.
Sanji is very curious about your life before he met you and how exactly you came to be the way you are. He assumed you got your wings from a devil fruit and was shocked when you told him you were born with them. That was the moment he became more invested in your origin and what exactly you are.
He never pressures you to tell him anything if you’re uncomfortable with it, but if you are, he’ll fix you both a cup of tea and sit with you in the kitchen, listening intently to whatever you have to say.
Sanji is also the most likely one to spend time with you at odd hours of the night. He doesn’t have the soundest sleep schedule and is a fairly light sleeper -- at least the lightest out of all the men -- so there’s a good chance he’ll be awake whenever you can’t sleep. Again, he’ll fix you something light to eat or drink that will hopefully help you sleep.
Sanji never expected you to ask him to help you care for your wings, but bro did not hesitate to say yes. He has you sit in the kitchen’s dining area while he helps preen your wings, handing you the feathers as he goes. When you offered him to keep them he didn’t waste a second more and stuffed them (gently) into his coat pockets with the longer ones poking out of his pocket lol.
He doesn’t keep them in the kitchen (for sanitary reasons), but he does keep them in a small keepsake box where he puts all his valuables in his sleeping area. Sometimes when he’s changing up his outfit, he’ll place one of your short feathers into the suit pocket alongside a handkerchief. It’s so adorable and you smiled so hard when you first saw it.
Sanji would never ask you to take him flying, but if you offered he first declined before quickly agreeing if you insist. He won’t admit it, but the moment he met you he wished you’d sweep him off his feet and bring him into the air with you.
Sanji didn’t think you could fight that well. To him, you looked like a delicate teenager/young adult needing protection. He did everything he could to protect you from the pirates that attacked the Baratie, but it wasn’t until he was pinned down and forced to watch you get jumped by a group of the other pirates that he actually saw just how strong you were.
Granted, it took you a hot second and you got hit by them a few times, but you still managed to beat the absolute shit out of them (and these were decently built people as well).
Sanji never doubted your ability to defend yourself from then on, but he still does try to protect you whenever he can. It’s just ingrained in him to protect other people.
Overall, Sanij was immediately won over by your beauty, but as he got to know you and your personality became more understood by him, a deep respect for your character grew within him. While lovely, Sanji often looks past your wings and sees you for who you truly are.
Tumblr media
Chopper
Chopper met you along with all the other Straw Hats on Drum Island. You assisted Luffy in bringing Nami to the only doctor on the island, acting as another bodyguard for him along with Sanji. Eventually, Sanji was knocked out and you carried him while Luffy had Nami.
It took a while for you two to reach the top of the Rockies where the doctor was supposed to be and it was draining on the both of you. You saw a pair of feet approach you and passed out to the sound of Luffy shouting, “They’re my Nakama!”
Doctorine allowed Chopper to treat you since, out of the four, your injuries were the least severe. At first, the two assumed you were a regular human and laid you on your back while they treated the others. It wasn’t until after Luffy was bandaged up that the two got to you. Removing your coat, Chopper was taken aback at the sight of feathers all inside your coat pressed up against your body. He quickly called Doctorine over and quickly decided to treat you instead and pushed Sanji over to Chopper for care.
Chopper made quick work of Sanji in order to watch Doctorine treat you. He watched intently as she was careful of your wings and placed you to rest on your side instead of your back. You were the last to wake up of the four and Chopper couldn’t hold back his questions about you. Doctorine swiftly dismissed him to allow you to recover as you had developed a small cold on top of your other injuries.
After recovering some and being faced with Drum Island’s “King” Wapol, Chopper was incredibly impressed by how well you fight along with the other Straw Hats. Not only were you wearing somewhat restricting clothing (those coats kept you warm but were hard to move in at times), but you were also still injured and yet you still managed to pack these guys up lmao. He was also very grateful when you covered him from an incoming attack, but also felt guilty that you had to sustain another injury.
After Chopper joined the crew, you were the first one he truly befriended. While he had no problem with the others in the crew, he felt most comfortable with you. He thinks it’s because of your gentle appearance and kind voice, but you think it’s because of your wings and somewhere in this subconscious he connects them to an animal and therefore connects you to an animal, which brings him comfort.
Chopper has many, and I mean many, questions about your anatomy and physiology. You explain everything you know about your body to him, including that you have hollow bones, there are air sacs in your lower abdomen, there are some foods that you just can’t eat, and that your hearing is very sensitive (sorry to my HoH and deaf baddies ilyyy).
Chopper loves to sleep with you. Whether it’s taking naps together or actually falling asleep at night, he feels very safe within your arms and wrapped in your wings.
As a doctor, Chopper knows how one’s back hurts when carrying a large weight on their shoulders for an extended period of time, so he’s quick to ask about any back pain you have. If you are ever having any discomfort, Chopper will massage your shoulders and back near where your wings connect to your skin to ease the soreness. He’ll also look into any medicine that helps with back pain like yours.
Chopper gets really nervous whenever you sustain any injury to your wings. While he has been taught how to treat many different injuries and illnesses on a person, your wings are a whole new thing to him and often time he needs your guidance to treat you. He’s very nervous about hurting you more than you already are :(
Chopper was very excited the first time you asked him to preen your wings. He’d seen some of the birds on Drum Island do the same thing sometimes during the warmer months, but he never quite understood what they were doing at the time. He’s very gentle and always asks before fully pulling off a feather all the way like he does a little tug and asks if it’s ready to go.
If you ever break one of your blood feathers, Chopper is quick to treat you with the least amount of pain possible.
Chopper uses some of your shorter, stiff feathers as pens to write with similar to Nami. He keeps them in a cup with all his other pens and pencils. The rest of your feathers he throws out since he doesn’t have a use for them and wants to keep his office clean and clear.
Chopper frequently asks you to take him flying and isn’t above begging you to do so.
He’s the only Straw Hat that you take flying somewhat regularly. His small stature and light weight make it possible for you to fly for long periods of time without straining yourself too much. The first few times you carried him with you, you flew close to the deck/ground so as not to frighten him. Once he felt confident you wouldn’t drop him, he began to beg you to fly higher, which you happily complied with.
Whenever you guys are attacked, you are the first person Chopper runs to for cover (assuming you’re close enough). He’s seen just how strong you are and feels safe with you.
Overall, Chopper first views you as a very unique patient; Someone who he can learn something new from. He then started to see just how genuinely kind you are and began to look up to you as an inspiration for what he wants to be.
Tumblr media
Robin
You were already a part of the Straw Hat crew when you met Robin while she was still working for Crocodile. Similar to Chopper, the large, baggy clothing you were wearing gave you the appearance of being a normal human. It’s not until she goes to use her devil fruit and restrain you that she feels something unusual on you; Something soft.
It’s not until you all depart from Alabasta and she makes her presence known on the ship that she actually sees them. With your protective clothes gone, your large, soft wings are on full display and Robin’s interest is immediately piqued.
Using her devil fruit, she grows an arm out of your back and you freak out at the feeling of her touching your wing from so far away. She’s normally much more polite about such things, but she just couldn’t contain herself at that moment. She promptly apologized to you before joining the crew, much to everyone’s surprise.
Robin is very curious about you after you inform her your wings aren’t the product of some devil fruit. She thinks back on any race -- either modern or ancient -- that had wings like yours, but she could think of none. Not even the people from Skypia had wings as majestic as yours, so she quickly ruled that out.
Robin will often ask you to join her while she sits out on the deck reading. It doesn’t matter what you were doing before, if it’s something that can be done outside then she’ll beckon you over.
She asks about your origins during one of these times in a non-probing way and very politely. If you tell her you don’t know much about your origin or that you haven’t eaten a devil fruit, she’ll start looking into it while doing her other research.
The title/nickname she calls you by is “The Avian” or just “Avian.”
Whenever the crew docks at an island and goes shopping, Robin likes to buy little bird-related nicknacks -- stuff like ceramic parakeets and glass canaries. She gifts them to you saying that they reminded her of you.
You have a shelf in your room that, along with your books, holds all the little birds (Robin smiled so hard when she saw it for the first time and, if I dare say, even blushed a little 0_0). They’re all secured with a little bit of adhesive on the bottom to prevent them from flying when the ship is forced to make crazy maneuvers.
In the least creepy way possible, Robin likes to watch you sleep. She doesn’t actively try to watch you sleep but if you end up falling asleep next to her while lounging on the deck together, she’ll close the book she’s reading and just…watch you. Not long, just a few minutes max.
She’s very grateful to be alive and that gratitude spreads to her friends and crewmates. She’s happy that you are alive and seeing you breathe and your heart pump brings her comfort knowing that you are alive.
Robin acts very much like a mother towards you, especially if you’re one of the younger members of the crew. She keeps an eye on you as you soar through the sky and perform cool tricks that impress the others and is always ready to catch you if something goes wrong.
Robin based her one devil fruit move where she grows “wings” of a sort after you.
Robin loves very much to help groom and preen your wings. She’s like Luffy in wanting to touch your wings frequently, but she’s much more discrete about it than he is.
She’s very gentle when pulling your feathers and removing dead ones. She always asks for confirmation before actually pulling one off. Her fingers are gentle as they card through your feathers and she scratched them in all the right ways.
She’ll also make sure to reorganize the feathers so that they lay correctly and comfortably when she’s done helping you groom them.
Robin never asks you to take her flying and she’ll turn down any offers you may give her. She may seem aloof and not interested but in reality, she very much wants you to carry her during flight. She’s a little embarrassed about it but mostly feels that you have better things to do than take her for a joy ride.
Whenever you grab her and fly her over to somewhere safe during a fight, she has a little fun while in the air with you.
Robin isn’t all that impressed at your inhuman strength. When you’re as well-traveled as she is you come across so many unique and bizarre people that you eventually become unfazed by it.
She does admire that, while you’re strong, it does take you some time to deal with a group of enemies. Some of the other crewmates are able to take out a lot of people in a crazy short amount of time so seeing you take a minute to beat up a group reminds her that you’re -- and the rest of the group as well -- still human and very real. You’re not some machine created to kill.
It was still a little jarring for her to see your petite frame bust some large guy’s ass and throw him across the battlefield. It took her a couple of battles to get used to it tbh.
Overall, Robin is very interested in you, both in who you are as a person and what you are as a being. To her, you are the definition of “looks can be deceiving” as you manage to surprise her time and time again.
Tumblr media
Franky
When Usopp had come back to the ship bloody and bruised and without the money, you went out with the rest of the group that went to pay his attackers a visit.
When Franky first saw you approaching with the group he thought you were an angel (bc he’s corny like that). He laughed to himself a little bit thinking about how out of place you looked side by side with the rest of him. He stopped laughing, however, when you socked him in the jaw and sent him flying into a wall that was a few feet away.
Chaos ensued and the last glimpse he got of you was of your wings swaying as you walked away from the rubble of the Franky House with the rest of your crew.
Time passes and the events of Water 7/CP9 take place and before you know it Franky is now a part of the crew (much to your surprise).
Tbh, it takes you a hot minute to really warm up to him as a crewmate considering what he did to Usopp, but in the end, you decide to follow Usopp’s lead, and if he was willing to forgive Franky then you were too.
Franky’s corny ass asks you if you’re an angel or something similar and you have to tell him no, much to his disappointment. Like he visually deflates when you tell him you aren’t some Godsend.
He does like to place you on his shoulder and say some stupid shit like, “Look! I’ve got an angel on my shoulder!” It’s a little embarrassing when he does that on a new island and locals look at you like you’re insane.
He only once asked about what you were and after you told him you didn’t know he never brought it up again. Bro really just doesn’t care lmao.
Franky likes to just watch you move about sometimes. Your wings move in a way that is uniquely and completely you. When you lean forward your wings spread back to balance yourself. If you ever trip your wings flutter to right yourself. They’re just really fun to look at for him.
Franky will look at some of the schematics that Usopp made for items related to your wings and will actually make them (with modifications he sees fit). He also creates some of his own inventions for you to try out and if one particular item doesn’t do it for you Franky’s not offended at all and scrapes/revises it.
The first time Franky touched your wings was when he was making an item for you and needed your wings’ specific measurements. He noted just how soft they were and couldn’t help but press his face into them, causing you to laugh lightly.
You kept some of them, but most of his inventions for you were just too heavy/bulky for them to be practical in battle :/
He’ll ask you to try out some of his inventions from time to time similar to Usopp, specifically ones that are better executed from higher places.
Franky is not the person to ask for help to preen your wings. It’s not that he’s rough like Zoro -- quite the opposite in fact -- but because his hands are just so big. He has difficulty trying to grab individual feathers and often pulls three or four out at a time.
He is about just stroking your wings though. He uses very light pressure on them as his fingers ghost over your feathers and it almost feels like a gentle breeze instead of someone touching them.
Franky loves it when you give him your feathers! He often asks you to just give all the dead ones to him and he’ll personally go through them and pick out the ones he wants to keep.
He uses them for decorating his inventions and other things, as well as writing and just sitting pretty somewhere in his workshop. He even keeps one of them in his shirt pocket claiming that it’s “lucky.”
After the two of you became better acquainted, Franky asked you a few times to pick him up and fly with him. You tried, you really did, but you just couldn’t. You can pick him up relatively okay, but you just couldn’t take flight with him. He chalked it up to being mostly metal and didn’t bother you about trying again.
Franky learned his lesson the hard way not to fuck with you. His jaw was sore for days after you punched him in the face. He never saw you fight during the CP9 battle, so the first time he actually saw you fight as an ally was after the crew docked at the next island and were harassed by some other pirates.
Franky watched you throw a guy at least three times your size over your head and a solid twenty-five feet away from you. He then proceeded to witness you break someone’s nose with a headbutt and he was glad you hadn’t done that to him (although his nose is made of metal).
He then considered getting or making you a pair of brass knuckles to see just how much damage you could do in a single punch.
Overall, Franky is always looking for new inventions to make and your body provides a very unique canvas he can design his inventions for. In his eyes, you’re not only a unique individual but also someone who is forgiving and kind-hearted.
Tumblr media
Brook
You met Brook with the rest of the crew near Thriller Bark. Immediately charmed by your beauty, Brook politely asked to see your underwear (regardless of your gender bc bffr he don’t care). Nami is quick to hit him for it.
Since he wasn’t present for most of Thriller Bark he kind of slipped your mind, since you had been dealing with zombies, until you ran into him by accident and he told you how to actually defeat them. Grateful, you do as he says.
After the stressful events of Thriller Bark and +1 more crewmate, you’re all off onto Fishman Island (until you take a detour to Sabaody Archipelago that is).
Brook assumes that your wings come from a devil fruit and is shocked one night when you casually mention you don’t have devil fruit powers. He then asks about it and you tell him that you just don’t know, so he doesn’t ask any further.
Expect this absolute dipshit to ask to see your underwear at least once a week if not more. Brook has a preference for pretty women, but really he likes anyone that’s pretty so you check the box in that aspect at least.
Brook likes to talk about Laboon with you. He feels that out of everyone on the ship, you’d understand his attachment to Laboon the most, even if you hadn’t met him in the East Blue.
Perhaps it’s because you resemble a bird? Brook isn’t even sure why he feels that way about you.
Brook would teach you how to whistle and mimic other bird calls/tweeting. He thought it fitting and thinks it amusing whenever he finds you somewhere on the deck delivering bird noises to yourself in the early morning.
It’s especially amusing when an actual bird or two respond to your call and sit with you on the deck.
Brook loves to hug you even if he can’t feel you (small headcanon: Brook is unable to feel since he lacks the nerve endings necessary to do so). He’s not a creep in the sense that he wants to touch you, he just loves the idea that he’s hugging someone since, hello, that man was alone for fifty years so he’s a little fucked in the head from that.
Tbh, he just likes to be around and in physical contact with you. Again, this stems from his time alone and he feels more safe when he’s with someone, especially you. Maybe, subconsciously, he views you as some kind of angel that’s there to guide him after his death so he feels the most at ease with you, but you’ll never hear him admit that.
Brook would be very good at preening your wings -- probably one of the best if you’re being honest. Since his fingers are nothing but bone they’re very precise in which feather they grab. Although, the lack of friction does mean that your feathers frequently slip through his bones, but two or three yanks later and the dead feather is gone!
Brook started collecting your feathers the first time you let him preen your wings. You know the boa he wears post-time skip? It’s made out of your feathers.
While Brook can’t actually feel your feathers, he just believes the others when they say they’re soft and will fight anyone who argues otherwise.
Brook is the easiest to fly with out of all the Straw Hats hands down. He genuinely feels like nothing when you carry him and you’ve actually dropped him once due to this.
Brook seems like the kind of guy to have a fear of heights, so he doesn’t ask you to carry him a lot when flying. He doesn’t mind though, however, when you bail him out of a tight spot in the middle of a fight.
He’ll actually be screaming and crying and thanking you as you set him down somewhere safe before continuing your own fight with whomever.
Speaking of fighting, Brook is terrified when he first sees you throw a punch. He was expecting some regular, non-devil fruit-type punch that would maybe disorientate someone. What he wasn’t expecting was for you to send someone twice, thrice your size across the room and skit to a halt on the hard, concrete floor.
He determined then that he would never make you mad and is very glad you’re on his side lmao.
Overall, Brook adores you, for your beauty/handsomeness, your kindheart, and your immense strength. You are someone he feels comfortable with and that he can form a deep bond with in a way he can’t with the other crewmembers; You are unique to him in that way.
Tumblr media
Straw Hats
Usopp, Luffy, and Chopper all cuddle you when taking a nap lmao. Sometimes others will join you four, but they’re the core group :)
Nami and Sanji are the main people who like to dress you up (you have a whole collection of clothes that the two of them have bought for you), but you’ll often find Robin, Franky, and Brook in attendance at the small “fashion shows” Nami and Sanji “host” for you after they have gone shopping.
Franky will sometimes find little bird items that remind him of you, but instead of giving them to you himself, he hands them off to Robin to gift to you instead (embarrassed much, Franky?).
You, Robin, and Nami go to spas frequently whenever you get the chance. Nami always makes sure you get a deep tissue back massage there.
Considering your unique physique, there are many people who gawk at you whenever you enter new islands and towns. It’s mostly limited to stares and whispers amongst others, but occasionally someone will speak up and talk to you.
Zoro and Sanji are especially defensive of you when this happens. It’s not that they think you can’t handle yourself, it’s just that they want to make sure you have the appropriate backup necessary in case someone does get nasty with you.
There have been occasions when someone grabs your wings without your knowledge/consent, both random pedestrians and enemies.
If it’s a pedestrian then someone from the crew will probably leave them with a minor injury, such as a slap to the face or a punch to the gut.
If it’s an enemy then the crew is on that person in an instant.
There is one time you can vividly remember an enemy grabbing your wings. You were trying to move Luffy away from someone when you were suddenly grabbed by the ankle and dragged back to the ground, causing you to drop Luffy some feet away. A foot was set on your lower back with a lot of pressure and that’s when your wings were grabbed close to the base and pulled.
The scream that ripped through your throat was haunting as you tried to contort your back away from your assailant in vain. You felt warm blood drip onto your shoulders when suddenly all the pressure on you was gone and you saw the guy lying still on the ground several meters away from you.
Chopper tended to you first that night and noted the mostly minor tearing around the top base of your wings. It took a week to heal completely, yet the scars from it still remain on your back, a lighter color than the rest of the tissue there.
Overall, the crew loves you to bits and you love them too.
A/N: I was NOT intending this to be so long. I only wanted each character to be like 6-7 points each, but I got carried away as usual. Either way, I hope you enjoyed it!
Tumblr media
Steve has always been all movement, all fluid grace, for as long as Eddie remembers. On the pitch, in the pool. Shielding others with his own body, his strength. He was proud of this. It was the one thing he knew he was good at.
And then Vecna nearly twisted his limbs from his body. Broke his arm in three different places, his leg in five.
“They say I'll need to be patient,” Steve tells Eddie a few months after everything, hands tangled over the middle console of the van. It's late December and they're on their way back from physical therapy. “Could be months before I walk without crutches. Years maybe before I'm back to the way I was before… or close.”
Eddie clenches his free hand around the steering wheel, like Steve clung to that stupid handrail earlier. White-knuckled and pale-faced, jaw locked tight as he struggled to take a few shaky steps. Not for the first time, he wishes that he'd been faster, pulled him out sooner-
“Eds.”
He snaps back to the present as if pulled by a bungee rope. Steve’s eyes are warm and soft.
“Stop it,” he says, gentle and firm and so very strong, so very Steve. Eddie needs to swallow against the sudden thickness clogging his throat. “You've nothing to hold against yourself. You saved me.”
“You saved yourself,” Eddie huffs, eyes stubbornly trained on the snowy road. “I helped, is all. You can do this, too. You'll be walking in no time, you just wait.”
“Dunno,” Steve mutters. He sounds so small, so broken, so very much not like himself, and Eddie wishes he could resurrect Vecna, simply to kill him again. Make it more painful this time, let him suffer like he made them suffer. “You saw me just now. Feels like I need to fight forever for every little inch of success.”
“Let's make a deal?”
The words are out before Eddie can think better of it, but the sadness on Steve’s face has given way to curiosity, so he shoulders on.
“We could make it a new year's resolution. If you manage to walk by … July, let's say, I'll quit smoking.”
“Oh, please!” Steve's eyebrow quirks. “As if you could.”
“Of course I could. I'm tired of you whining about my cigarette breath anyhow. What's wrong, big boy? Scared of getting your ass handed to you?”
“Fuck off,” Steve grouses, but his mouth is curling into a smile and his eyes are sparkling. “It's on, dude!”
“Hell, yeah!” Eddie makes no attempt at hiding his smug grin. Count on Steve’s competitive streak to win him over. “It's so on!”
*
“Oh God,” Steve squawks the second his hands lose contact with the crutches. “It's off. Eds, it's off, give’m here.”
“Nuh-uh!” Eddie dances a step back - not far, still close enough to catch Steve in case he falls, but far enough to keep the crutches out of reach. “Just give it a shot, c’mon. You got this.”
Over the distance between them, their eyes meet.
“I've gotcha.”
Steve's eyes light up and a small laugh bubbles from his throat.
And then he walks.
Eddie makes sure to stay a bit ahead, spouting a never-ending string of encouragement and jokes and sweet nonsense. Just keeps talking so that Steve can focus on something other than the fear and the doubt. Guides him with his voice like he's done before, like he'll keep doing for as long as Steve needs, as long as he wants.
The first steps are unsure and wobbly, but soon enough, Steve finds his footing. They've both kicked off their shoes, and the dry summer grass is brittle under their naked feet, the earth soft and warm. The sound of their footfalls mingles with the whirr of the cicadas in the grass, the rush of his own blood in his ears, their mingled laughter, a gorgeous, wonderful symphony of alive, alive, alive.
When Steve’s legs give out and he stumbles, Eddie is there. He cushions their fall with his own body and they go down in a tangle of limbs and laughter, lips meeting before they even hit the ground. The crutches go clattering somewhere to the side.
“I did it!” Steve gasps against his mouth, and Eddie can't tell if the sound is more laugh or more sob. “Shit, did you- did you see that? I did it!”
“You did it,” Eddie rumbles, hands in Steve's hair, kissing his lips and nose and eyes and anything he can reach between words. Both their cheeks are wet with tears, but they're good tears, finally good tears, and he can’t tell whose they are anymore. It doesn't matter. All that matters is that they’re alive, and here, and together. “Fuck yeah, you did, always knew you would. So strong, so amazing. Love you so much.”
Steve makes another sound, a raw thing so full of emotion it makes Eddie’s heart flutter, and crashes their lips together again, firmer, longer. Eddie sighs as a hesitant tongue coaxes at his lips, opens up, lets him in.
And then Steve groans and pulls back.
“What?” Eddie asks, insides twisting with worry. “Shit, did you hurt yourself? What-”
“‘m fine!” Steve wheezes, glancing up at him with watery eyes. “You just taste like an ashtray, is all.”
“Oh, c'mon!” Eddie grouses while Steve rolls off him, flops onto his back in the grass. “I had like half a cig this morning.”
“Half a cig too much, then,” Steve beams up at him, all glinting teeth and gold-streaked hair in the sunlight, eyes sparkling with mirth and alive, alive, alive. “I win.”
Eddie pouts. “What though? Can't remember agreeing on a prize, this was all fun and-”
One strong, nimble hand tangles in the collar of his shirt, pulls him in.
“Shut up and kiss me, ash breath.”
Eddie has never obeyed an order more gladly in his life.
Tumblr media
You’ve had enough of this.
Jisung is never the type to avoid you. Especially when you’ve been dating for so long.
It reminds you of the times before he became your boyfriend, when he was so nervous to even be around you.
And the time after you started dating when you realised he was hiding something from you the whole time.
And when you found out he’s a werewolf. You thought there’d be nothing more to be kept between you after learning his deepest secret.
But now he’s gone so far as to avoid coming to classes so he doesn’t see you.
Communication is key, you always say to him. I always want to know what you’re feeling.
And he agrees with you despite it being difficult for him to do so.
Yet, here you are clicking on Jisung’s contact again and again just to see that he’s still ignoring your messages. For the last three days, Jisung’s been leaving your texts on read and at the same time, he’s ignoring your calls.
When you asked Renjun, he said Jisung is simply unwell. But Jisung always answers your calls when he’s sick because, as he likes too say, your voice speeds up his recovery.
It certainly didn’t settle your doubts when the others — Jaemin and Haechan — shared weird glances between that made you sure something else was and is at hand.
And that’s why, at the turn of the evening when you’re done with your classes and studying, you march your way to his house.
You’re tempted to turn back at the door. Surely, something is being hidden from you and there must be a reason for it. Are you really sure you want to find out?
Even if it’s something bad?
No, you chide yourself in your mind. Jisung would never betray me.
You look up to the glowing full moon for comfort. It’s warm yellow embraces you and you feel a stir of confidence.
There’s movement inside seconds after knocking on the door to his house. He shares it with his friends — Renjun, Jeno, Jaemin, Haechan, Chenle and Mark, who opens the door.
“YN!” he exclaims, eyes flashing wide for a second. “What are you doing here?”
You notice he’s hiding behind the door, eyes scouring the darkened sky for scattered clouds.
You let yourself inside quickly after realising he’s hiding from the moon. But Mark is a little bit hesitant about your presence.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to be here,” he says. “Jisung’s not well.”
“Then let me see him,” you step in further and he has no choice but to shut the door. “He hasn’t answered my calls.”
The house is doused in darkness. Blackout curtains cover the windows from floor to ceiling; the only light comes from dimmed lamps.
It’s not as loud as it usually is and you figure the others must be out with the full moon, leaving just Mark and Jisung at home.
“You guys aren’t turning this month?” you ask him.
Mark shakes his head, content with stalling you in the hallway. “The others left yesterday but I stayed to look after Jisung.”
“What’s wrong with him?” you ask. Mark’s mouth opens, but he closes it again, fuelling your suspicions. “I’m going to find out, even if you don’t tell me, Mark. What is he hiding? Is it someone else?”
“What? No!” Mark shouts. “I promise you, there is no way that’s the case. He’s just sick. That’s all.”
“Then why is he avoiding my calls?”
You storm up the stairs like it’s your own home, which Jisung and many of the others had asked you to treat it like so, but Mark’s hand around your wrist stops you as you make it to Jisung’s closed door.
“YN, please,” Mark pants. “I can’t let you in there.”
“Why not?”
“He… he asked us not to let you see him. Not like this.”
“Is… is it that bad?” your eyes threaten to tear up at the thought of him being so sick but you want to see him regardless. You need to know the truth.
But before you can say anything else, Jisung’s door swings open.
His tall figure hunches over, hands gripping the door frame to hold himself upright.
“J–Jisung…?”
He pants heavily; small rumbles erupt from his chest and your body begins to shake. Mark pulls you back little by little and you use what little light there is in the house to take in the sight of Jisung.
He’s sweating from head to toe, hair clumped and hanging over his forehead and his entire body trembles, like he’s in pain from the sight of you.
“Get your hand off her…” he growls. Although his voice is quiet, strained even, the aggression in it is enough to make both you and Mark shiver.
“Jisung,” Mark warns, pulling you behind him. “I’ll take her, okay? Just go back in your room and I’ll get her out of here.”
“I said… get your hands off her.”
Your shielded by Mark’s back so you can’t see the animosity in his eyes, but you can feel it. Tensed and worried, you peek over Mark to look at your boyfriend.
What could he possibly be sick with?
Excessive sweating, heavy panting, trembling limbs…and possessiveness.
Those are all signs of his rut, which you’ve been through with him before, but they’ve never been so extreme.
His rut was always something special to share together and you’re no stranger to letting him have his way with you until he’s satisfied.
But right now, he’s a completely different person.
Like he’s lost all control.
Jisung trudges towards Mark with dark eyes and a dark aura all around him.
Jisung…” Mark warns again. “Go back in your room.”
“Give her to me.”
“…No.”
For a moment, it’s silent enough to hear a pin drop. You don’t even breathe, to afraid to set off whatever has control over Jisung.
“YN, you need to leave.”
“But—”
“No buts. He told us to not let you see him. I shouldn’t have let you in, I’m sorry.”
“Is it his rut?”
Mark nods slowly, edging you towards the stairs. “He’s never had it with a full moon before.”
He doesn’t have time to explain but you figure the full moon somehow amplifies the effect of a werewolf’s rut. And especially when Jisung has a hard time turning, you can’t imagine the extent of pain he’s having with this rut whilst stuck in his human body.
He claws at his chest, whining deeply.
“YN, please!” he cries. His grating voice is so desperate, enough to make you freeze on the spot. Mark tries to push you again but you fight against him.
“Let me help him.”
“Hell no!” Mark looks to you, and for a split second you see a primal glare in Jisung’s eyes, like he’s ready to pounce on Mark and tear him apart before he does the same to you.
“I’ve done it before, I can help him, Mark.”
“I know, YN. But it’s different this time. He could hurt you.”
“He won’t,” you state. But looking at him, you’re not convinced either.
“It’s not a good idea,” Mark warns in a singsong tone as Jisung finally grounds himself and stalks towards you. “This is your last chance to leave before someone gets hurt.”
You gulp, meeting the eyes of your boyfriend. He’s hungry.
Really hungry.
“It’s fine. I can take him.”
Mark is about to spin around and hit you with a “are you freaking insane?” but you push him away.
What hurts more is seeing Jisung like this.
You’ve helped him every time he feels this pain, so why stop now? You’re his girlfriend, after all. You know he’d stop at nothing to help you when you needed it most.
Jisung latches onto you the second there is distance between you and Mark and you realise that even in this state, Jisung was still afraid of Mark. They all were. You never saw that side of Mark but you were sure it was something werewolves could only tell between themselves, that Mark had the most power and authority.
And that means if he tries to stop you again, Jisung will truly have to back down and suffer alone.
“It’s okay, Mark,” you convince him. “I’ll be okay.”
Jisung’s arms hold you tight to him, you can already feel his bulging cock rubbing against your hips. His head is in your neck rubbing all over your skin, inhaling your aroma whilst leaving his own scent behind.
Your cheeks burn and you avoid Mark’s eyes as he finally gives in.
“You still have that necklace?” he asks as one last reassurance.
You nod, and when he sighs in both relief and defeat you push Jisung’s hot, heavy body back into his room letting your back close the door.
Jisung drives you up it immediately, grinding his hips into your crotch and one of your legs wrap around his waist while the other holds your balance in this awkward position. Though, Jisung’s inhuman strength does a better job of holding you up.
You gasp as he bites your neck and you’re afraid he might tear a chunk off. But he soothes your worries by licking over the sore spot before moving onto the next.
“Need you,” he’s muttering. “Need you, YN. I need you so bad.”
“I’m here, Sungie,” you whisper in a high–pitched voice, the voice he loves so much. “I’m right here.”
He hoists you up further while making sure your clothed cunt is pressed right against him. You can feel the wetness growing.
You know he loves having your arousal on him so you roll your hips to ensure he gets his share. You grind harder until you can feel the fabric cling to your pussy and he groans loudly when he realises what you’ve done.
“Sungie, ah!” you cry. “I’m gonna cum!”
He doesn’t register your words and continues his movements, only harder and rougher and you’re sure the door will break through from how hard and fast he’s rutting against your clothed body.
You can’t hold it in anymore. the friction is too much and you feel your orgasm rush over you. From the way Jisung stutters, you realise he came with you. But he’s far from finished.
Before you know it, he’s thrown you on the bed and he’s tearing off his own clothes. While he takes a short moment of not looking at you, you take the chance to grab the necklace from your pocket.
It’s in a velvet pouch for extra protection; the last thing you want is to accidentally hurt Jisung or the others with it. You crawl up the bed and quickly slip it under the pillow before he can realise.
He gifted you it the first time you helped him with his rut. A plain silver chain necklace. You never wear it, simply keeping it in your pocket or bag as a precaution.
You know he’d never hurt you but he felt comforted knowing you’d use it for protection if he or the others ever tried to hurt you.
You’re not planning on using it, but given his state, it’s good to have measures in place.
He’s none the wiser as he pulls your ankle and tears away your pants and shirt. His lips latch onto the skin of your belly, devouring the flesh like it’s his last meal.
You fumble with your bra while he rips off your panties and you’re both fully naked.
His entire body is flushed, shaking with desperation. In the dim light, you take a moment to admire his incredible body and your eyes drift down to his cock. The sheer size of it always makes your heart pump ten times harder.
It’s covered in his cum from the previous orgasm and he’s immediately poking at your entrance with the tip of his cock.
Your feet hit his abs as soon as he tries to push in.
“Fingers first, Jisung,” you cry. “Fingers first!”
You’re not used to going straight in; Jisung always eases you slowly by fingering first but he must be so out of his mind to have forgotten.
“I need to be inside you, YN.” He growls.
His fingers are like long claws, stretched and ready to dig into your flesh. You’re supposed to make him feel better but he seems like he’s getting worse.
The closer he comes to having you, the more impatient he grows.
You dart up immediately, dropping to the floor so your back rests against the bed and you take him in your mouth.
You spend no time playing around and edge him in as quickly as you can. His cock is hitting the back of your throat and his hand roots itself in your hair.
Everything becomes a blur as he thrusts into you.
Your hands on his thighs do nothing to slow him down so you squeeze your eyes shut and let him have his way. Meanwhile, you spread your legs and slowly slip two fingers into your leaking hole.
You can barely breathe, let alone moan but the feeling of your sopping cunt has your eyes rolling back.
There’s just something about how animalistic it feels that thrills you.
You push your fingers in an out, focusing on easing your muscles so you can handle Jisung after, and he finishes quickly. His cum spills down your throat and he keeps thrusting, your head hitting the mattress again and again and even when he pulls out, his cum spurts onto your naked body.
You let it dribble down your skin as you stand on shaky limbs. Jisung pushes you flat against the mattress and lines his raging cock with your pussy.
“I missed you,” he growls into a kiss. “I missed you so much.”
“Missed you too, Sungie,” you whine. “I was so worried.”
His cock enters you and you gasp, legs flying in the air without warning. He takes your hand and shoves your fingers in his mouth, licking every drop of your arousal from them.
A groan erupts from deep in your gut.
His animalistic tendencies shouldn’t be so riveting but he still has a hold on you.
When he’s done with your fingers, he yanks your hair back from behind, exposing your neck to him perfectly.
He litters your skin with bites, harsh and painful bites.
But he blesses each one of them with a hungry kiss, lips breaking apart for his tongue to lick over with care, as if each one is an apology for hurting you.
He licks a stripe up the length of your neck. And then another. And another.
You squeal from the sensation, unsure whether you like it or not but the way your pussy quivers around his cock tells you the answer.
You have no qualms with him scenting you, but this is entirely new.
And you’re sure the others will be keeping their distance from you for a very long time.
“Jisung!”
He grabs your hands and pins them down before slamming into you. Then he’s forcing your leg onto his shoulder, opening you up in ways he’s never done before, exploring and reaching deeper than he’s ever tried.
He pounds into you without a care. The mix of his cum and your arousal spreads on both of you and the noises it makes when he slams in and out drives you insane.
Jisung cums again, hips slowing for just a moment before he flips you over. You can’t keep yourself up by your legs but he holds your hips up at the perfect level.
And when he’s done with you like that, he holds you in another position. He orders you and pushes you with such meanness, but kisses and holds you with tenderness.
And before long, you’re on your back again, cupping his face while he batters his cock into you with such fierceness and hunger in the same position you started in.
You know it’s his favourite. He loves seeing your face.
Little by little, you’re edged up the bed with his thrusts to the point where you hold your hands up against the headboard so you don’t crash into it.
“Fuck! Jisung!” your cry is long and loud — surely the entire neighbourhood could hear you.
He keeps going, hard and fast and even when he feels your walls clenching incredibly tight around him, even when he feels his own cock twitching and leaking cum inside you, he doesn’t stop.
You don’t know how long he goes on for and you lost count of how many times you orgasmed. In the end, they all begin to blur into one as your body becomes numb with an overload of sensations.
The cries escaping from your throat make it sore; your voice turns raspy but he keeps going.
Your limbs lose their hold and you become a mindless doll simply for him to use until he’s satisfied.
But tonight, he’s completely insatiable.
With the little energy you have after hours of relentless fucking, you sneak your hand under the pillow. The pouch is still there and you fiddle with it for a second, attempting to reveal the silver necklace.
But something comes over you.
Maybe an epiphany.
Maybe another orgasm.
Whatever it is, your hand retracts from the necklace and reaches into Jisung’s soaked hair.
Little by little, he regains his sanity as he empties load after load inside you. The immense pleasure comes and fades away, bringing him back to reality and his expression isn’t so fierce anymore.
He’s getting better. He just needs to work himself to exhaustion and hopefully he’ll be finished at last.
His entire body is covered in heaps of sweat and you give him one last kiss before you allow fatigue to take over your body.
You’re covered in bruises and engulfed in soreness, whilst at the same time, you struggle to feel anything but his beating heart.
He’s taken over you completely.
“You’re mine,” he whispers as you drift away. “You’re mine.”
random thing, but I find it hillarious that Sayaka's two methos of flirting are "Spend quality time with them over a lengthy period of time" or "Die tragically in front of their eyes after knowing them for three days", and it was the latter that worked
Honestly, it was probably longer than just three days, but if I can take your silly concept seriously, there is something to be said why Sayaka/Kyousuke didn't work, but Sayaka/Kyoko did.
And that is that Sayaka and Kyousuke just really took each other for granted.
Like, Sayaka had grown up with Kyousuke. They've always been together, so she just sort of assumed that they were meant to be. After all, she was by his side through his recovery, always was there for him, so of course they were fated to get together. It never even occurred to her that she might have a rival for his affections.
As for Kyousuke, his focus was on his dream, and how he had suddenly lost it. Yes, he cared about Sayaka and yes he appreciated how she had looked after him, but to him, that was just his good friend being a good friend. His attention was elsewhere.
Meanwhile, whether it be wanting to take her out for being a dumbass rookie who dared stand where Mami stood, or trying desperately to save her life once she had snapped back to her senses, Kyoko was nothing but focused on Sayaka. She took every step of their relationship completely seriously no matter how things were between them. Whether her motivations were heroic or selfish, there was no doubt that Sayaka had Kyoko's full attention, even when Sayaka was so wrapped up in her own turmoil to notice.
But to make it kind of silly again, it was probably all kinds of hilarious when, after Sayaka had become an archangel and could see the whole picture, how it must have finally hit her that Kyoko had feelings for her. Like...
Sayaka: Damn, Madoka. You wanted a secret admirer for so long, and it turns out that you had the single most extra admirer in history! Girl was down bad!
Madoka: Well, so did you! I mean, Kyoko did lay down her life for you in the last timeline. That's pretty...extra, isn't it?
Sayaka: I guess you're right. Huh. That scruffy mutt turned out to be pretty all right after all.
Madoka: ...
Sayaka: Wait, what are you implying?!
...
Sayaka: No way. No way does Kyoko have a crush on me. No way.
Madoka: W-Well, I can see all of the timelines that Homura went through, and it does seem like it.
Sayaka: But why her? I spent so much effort on winning Kyousuke's heart, only to pull...her?
Madoka: What's wrong with Kyoko? I mean, she's strong, she's smart, she's really funny, and she's really pretty as well.
Sayaka: But she's a girl! I mean, okay, Homura's the single gayest person I have ever met, and that's fine! Um, and if you are too, that's okay! But I'm me! I like boys, not girls!
Madoka, who's known Sayaka their whole life: Er, Sayaka? Are you sure?
Sayaka: ...
Sayaka: Fuck.
Madoka: Well, it's not-
Sayaka: Why couldn't it have been Mami?!
...
Sayaka: I should go down there. Just, you know, to look after her.
Madoka: You like her.
Sayaka: It's not that! It's just...she did sort of die for me. I mean, it was another version of her, but even so. That kind of means something, right?
Nagisa: Just admit that you like her.
Sayaka: Stay out of this, new girl! No one asked you!
...
Madoka: ...and that's my plan to save Homura!
Nagisa: Will there be cheese?
Madoka: I mean, probably?
Nagisa: I'm in.
Sayaka: So, just so we're clear, you want Nagi and I to follow you into this fake Mitakihara City, where we will pose as ourselves as we keep an eye on Homura to figure out what's going on?
Madoka: Right.
Sayaka: And several other people that we all know and care about have already been lured into this labyrinth.
Madoka: Yes! Like my family, and Hitomi! And Kyousuke! And Mami!
Sayaka: And Kyoko.
Madoka: Oh. Oh! Um, yes.
Sayaka: Then I'm in.
Nagisa: Ha! Get it, girl!
...
Sayaka: ...and in conclusion, that is why you should totally move in with me.
Kyoko: Cool, let's go.
Sayaka: Wait, really? You really want to?
Kyoko: A place to sleep. Food. Don't have to clear out at the crack of dawn. Hanging with my best girl? I'm in.
Sayaka: ...
Sayaka: Was it really that easy THIS WHOLE TIME?! I mean, COME ON!
Ship: Joel Miller x you (cishet f reader)
Tags/warnings: Joel is hurt!, Hurt/Comfort, Implied Sexual Assault.
Summary: Ellie and Joel return to Jackson after their failed atempt to find the Fireflies. Joel is hurt and you're so scared for him that you almost miss Ellie's trauma. Kind of spoilers for S01E08.
Words: 1,522
A/N: Look I just need Joel and Ellie to return to the safety of Jackson after episode 8, OKAY??? I don't care that it probably won't fit the show's storyline. I needed this. (Could be seen as belonging to the same verse as The Birds and the Bees.)
Tumblr media
It’s a late, icy afternoon when the gates of Jackson open to let in the hunting party – and with them, Joel and Ellie.
You are helping out with the recently born lambs. The type of sheep that the Jacksonites have often have more than two lambs at a time, making bottle feeding necessary. You’re holding up two bottles, one in each hand, for greedy little lambs when the door to the sheep pen opens, and Kenya runs in, startling the little ones.
”Joel and Ellie are back!”
You barely take time to reflect on the and Ellie part: you just hand the bottles over to Kenya, scramble to your feet, and rush out.
The party is dismounting, Ellie throwing herself into your arms as soon as she sees you. You’re too confused about her presence to say anything, just hug her close, happy to see her again. But she was supposed to be with the Fireflies...?
Your gaze goes to Joel, who’s staring at you from the back of the horse he’s still on. He looks pale and weak, and you slowly untangle from Ellie.
”What happened?” you ask, just as Joel slides down from the horse. As soon as his feet touch the ground, he wobbles, and has to hold onto the saddle to stay upright.
”Joel!”
You’re by his side in a heartbeat, your hands on his scruffy cheeks. Meeting his eyes, you can see that he’s feverish.
”Joel,” you whisper, hands going to the back of his neck, fingers losing themselves into his hair. When his forehead comes to a heavy rest against yours, he sighs deeply.
”I’m fine,” he says, before his kneees buckle and he collapses into your arms.
~
As Pearl, one of Jackson’s three physicians, examines Joel, you pace back and forth in the next room while Ellie tells you and Tommy, who’s sitting down and looking austere, about what happened. You shake your head at her story, your teeth clenched together so hard that you’re unable to say anything.
”Jesus,” Tommy draws a hand through his hair. ”Fuckin’ crazy. Are you okay, Ellie?”
”I’m good,” the girl immediately dismisses him, instead looking at you. ”Will Joel be alright?”
You want to reassure her, let her know that of course Joel will be okay, but a tremor has begun to travel through your body, and if you force your mouth to open now, you will break down.
”I’m sure he’ll be just fine.” Tommy comes to your rescue, his keen eye recognizing the first signs of shock in your behavior. ”Ellie... why don’t you go get yourself a hot meal? We’ll stay here, wait for news.”
”No way,” Ellie plants herself steadily in the chair, crossing her arms in front of her chest. ”I’m not going anywhere until I hear Joel’s okay.”
You can’t look at her, can’t fall to your knees in front of her, hug her, comfort her, tell her that everything will be okay. If you look at her, you’ll lose it, and you can’t do that, not in front of Ellie, this brave young girl who has already shown courage and strength beyond her years. She needs you to stay strong for her now, needs to know that you’re going to be strong for her and for Joel.
The door opens, and Pearl steps out. You’re in such a state that you don’t even see that she looks completely untroubled.
”He has an infection,” she begins, ”and he’s lost a lot of blood. I put him on antibiotics and we’ll see in a day or two if they work. If they do, there is no reason for him not to make a full recovery.”
”So he’ll be okay?” Ellie wants clarification. Pearl nods, an encouraging smile on her face.
”I don’t see any immediate risks. He’s weak, but stable. I’ll keep him here tonight just to make sure, but he’s a sturdy one.”
You don’t even hear the last words as you impolitely push past her into the room. On shaking legs, you make your way to the bed and sink down on the side of it.
Joel is awake. His eyes have a medicated drowsiness to them, but they’re fastened on your face as he pulls his hand from under the blanket, seeking out yours. Taking it and bringing it to your lips, you notice that his skin tastes salty. Then you realize that you’re crying.
”Darlin’,” he drawls, ”it’s fine. I’m fine.”
”Like – hell – you – are,” you hack in a strangled voice, your throat hurting from having held back the tears.
”Come ’ere...”
Very carefully, you lay down next to him and let him wrap his arm around your shoulders, as you wrap yours around his torso. Head on his shoulder, you let your tears wet his flannel. He says nothing, maybe because of the drugs, maybe because there is nothing to say as he patiently waits for you to run out of tears.
When you do, you notice Ellie and Tommy hovering in the doorway. Sitting up, you pass your sleeves over your face, take a deep, sniffling breath, and clear your throat. Ellie takes it for the signal it is, and comes up to the bed. She looks a little lost when she takes Joel’s hand.
”The doctor said you’ll be fine.”
”Of course I will,” Joel agrees, ”and that’s all thanks to you, kid.”
Ellie blinks, looking a little surprised.
”You saved my life,” Joel specifies, his voice thick. ”Twice. You risked your own life to save mine.”
”Just took a page out of your book,” she smiles a little bashfully, but you can see that she’s affected. Her sheepishness changes into alarm when Joel tries to sit up.
”The fuck are you doing, man?”
”Joel!” You stop him from moving any further with your hands firmly on his chest.
”What the hell, man?” Tommy chimes in from the foot end of the bed. His brother grunts in dissatisfaction.
”I’m going back to the house.”
”The doc said you gotta stay here,” Tommy admonishes him.
”I’m fine, I just need a good night’s sleep, and I want that in the comfort of – ” He stops there, not knowing what to call the bed that you shared for one night only before he continued alone with Ellie. He looks at you, as if seeking assistance.
”Joel, no,” you tell him softly. ”You need to stay here so that the doc can keep an eye on you.”
”Don’t need anyone but you.”
”We’re fucking exhausted,” Ellie tells him sharply. ”All of us. I sure as hell am not gonna scrape you off the floor when you fall over in the middle of the night.”
Despite the gravity of the situation, you feel the corners of your mouth pull up. You look away in an attempt to hide it, but Ellie catches you, and starts to grin as well. Joel looks from you to Ellie, and then to Tommy, who shrugs.
”You’re outnumbered. I’ll tie you down myself to just keep you here.”
Joel grunts and lies back down – with some relief, you notice.
Pearl comes back in to usher you all away so that he can sleep, but Joel won’t let go of your hand.
”She stays,” he stubbornly insists. ”She stays, or I go.”
Pearl agrees, and Tommy and Ellie take their leave. Ellie stops by the door for one last glance back before pulling the door shut. The despondency in her eyes shakes you to the core.
”Ellie, wait.”
You rise from the bed and hurry after her, see the insecurity flicker in her eyes as she expects you to maybe be mad at her. Instead, you get down on your knees and embrace her tightly.
”Thank you,” you whisper. ”Thank you, Ellie, for saving him. Thank you for not leaving him.”
She draws a quivering breath against your neck, and hugs you back.
”You’re my family,” she murmurs, and you’re sobbing.
”Yes, we are.”
When Ellie leaves, you return to bed. There’s a spare blanket at the foot end of the bed, and you remove your boots and your coat before wrapping yourself in it, snuggling up to Joel. Finally alone, you kiss his dry lips, then his clammy forehead.
”She’s not okay,” Joel mumbles. ”She needs someone to talk to.”
”I know,” you nod, ashamed for your inability to deal with it right away. ”I know, I just... Joel...”
He blinks, desperately trying to stay awake for a just a while longer.
”I understand.” He knows your history, your experiences, your traumas. ”Stay with me... until I’m asleep. Then go to Ellie, okay?”
You nod, an odd sense of calm slowly filling you. Joel always had that effect on you.
”You’re my brave girl,” he now tells you, his voice growing more distant as he starts to drift. You scoff softly.
”She is. She’s so much braver than I ever was.”
Joel doesn’t reply: he’s out like a light. You stay nestled against him until you’re sure he’s asleep. Kissing his forehead one more time, you get up, get dressed, and go out to find Ellie.
In that halfway space between waking and sleep it was hard to discern what was real and what wasn’t. Your bed felt warm, sheets still tangled around your arms and legs. The weight of your blanket on your chest could easily be confused with another’s body, and so you felt yourself smile. Warm, happy, safe-
Abby was behind you, her limbs expertly twisted around yours like she’d done it a thousand times before. . . and she had.
Slowly you opened your eyes, staring blankly ahead of you into your pitch black bathroom. You recognized the fresh scent of your shampoo, and felt the way your hair still clung to your hot cheeks- wet from your shower the night before. It was like you were suspended in a memory, everything all soft and fuzzy around you. The dots weren’t perfectly connecting, and still you were happy. For a second you just laid there, unable to look down at the hand you could feel so vividly at your waist. Would you see Abby’s knuckles when you looked down? Would you see the rubber promise ring she had insisted on wearing? Everything always had to be even and fair with her.
This morning felt familiar. Like you’d lived it before. Your breath left you in a rush when the bed creaked behind you.
“Abby,” God, she was back. She was back and she was right behind you. “Baby?”
There was a soft groan and then the arm tightened, bringing you into a warm chest. Her bicep squeezed your arm tightly against her shoulder, and all at once you were tucked in so tight. Confusion tugged at your features, and you mulled over exactly why you were clinging to her arm so tightly.
“What’s wrong?” She whispered against your hair, her voice still thick with sleep. Still, her fingers stroked at your bare stomach.
“I had a nightmare,” You mumbled, trying to recall exactly what had plagued you just seconds ago. You can’t remember now that you’re safe here. . . safe with Abby again. “You were gone and I was all alone.”
Those moments came back to you in flashes. The ache, the constant pain of losing her, the “learning to live without her” that crushed you entirely. You turned around in her grasp, nuzzling your nose into the crook of her neck. You took deep inhales, trying to still your rising panic. You could feel the steady beating of her heart against your cheek, the warmth of her bare breasts against your collar bones.
“I was gone?” She raised a hand, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, a few golden strands falling onto her forehead as she moved her head against the pillow beneath her. “You can tell me about it if you want.” She offered supportively, petting your back in slow circles.
You don’t know why. . .  but you missed those circles. It felt like you’d been without them for weeks. Months.
“I-I got a phone call. . . and they told me that you’d died,” Your bottom lip quivered, your eyes filling with tears. You couldn’t help but laugh pathetically at your unnecessary hysterics. Abby was right here. Everything was okay. “It felt like the longest nightmare I’ve ever had. It was horrible.”
“You did so good though.” She whispered, her hands still stroking.
Your muscles tensed, and slowly you moved your hand up her side, fingers brushing against her skin. You pressed a soft kiss against the underside of her breast, a tear breaking free past your lower lashes. This moment suddenly felt fleeting.
“I did?” You questioned, pulling away to look at her.
She was so beautiful. Like an angel had fallen from heaven and landed right in your bed. The sun was just beginning to rise, setting the line of trees just outside of your window ablaze. She was diaphanous and golden laying there beneath you. You were so lucky. You could barely breathe when she looked up at you like that, her eyes so thick with pride and love.
“You did, baby girl. You stayed so strong.” She cracked a small smile, but it looked pained. Like she was also realizing that the two of you couldn’t exist here forever. “I need you to keep it up though, alright?” You couldn’t feel her hand on your back anymore, nor the softness of the sheets.
“Please,” You sobbed out, reaching out to cup her cheek. She didn’t feel like anything. Like your hand was molded around a pocket of open space. Nothingness. She was about the size of the palm of your hand now, her urn sitting on the mantle in your living room. “Please don’t leave me again.”
Her blue eyes stared up at you, proud and unwavering in their convictions, as they always were. . . always had been. “I’m never far. Pinky.” Promise.
And then you were in your bed again, the alarm on your phone blaring.
“Abby?” You mumbled, and you didn’t have to turn over to realize you were alone.
Ellie was good at putting pressure on herself. It had always been a form of motivation, as cruel as it seemed. She couldn’t let today be awful. No episodes or meltdowns and no long bouts of silence. You were pretty and it really seemed like you could use a friend.
Ellie could use a friend too.
She couldn’t remember the last time she’d shown interest in a girl. She’d always been career driven with a one track mind. She was good at overworking herself and running herself dry. She hoped that you’d be able to use that to your benefit today. Ellie wanted to lose herself in something. . . in someone. She wanted to be useful for the first time in what felt like a long, long while.
So she woke up at the butt crack of dawn and took a shower. She kept her eyes shut tight as she washed herself and didn’t even bother to towel dry her hair before she was pulling on an outfit. Thick droplets of water stained the shoulders of her jean button up as she tied up the laces on her boots. She focused on one shoe at a time, her mind preoccupied with thoughts of you. Every once and a while her brain would wander, hellbent on self destruction, but with a small groan she’d remember the sadness in your eyes.
She’d remember who she was before the accident.
She moved down the stairs as quietly as she could, praying that Joel’s dog wouldn’t start barking once he realized that his new best friend was leaving the house. The keys to her old car were on the rack beside the front door, right next to Joel’s flashy new pair. He’d told Ellie over dinner that he’d been maintaining the beat up old Jeep the best that he could, meaning she at least had a little bit of freedom while she was back home.
She locked the door behind her, the cool morning breeze stinging against her wet ears as she gracelessly stumbled down the stairs, juggling the bulky set of keys in her hand. A huge metal spaceship that Joel had stuffed into her Christmas stocking senior year, a neon green carabiner she’d bought at one of the gas stations closest to her school, and a few other childish charms that she couldn’t place any meaning behind swung from the nearly ancient keychain. Her sense of self expression and style back in those days was tacky to say the least, but she appreciated child-Ellie nonetheless.
“You poor child.” She teased under her breath, climbing into the driver's seat and shoving the key into the ignition. She sucked in a breath and held it before cranking it up.
To her surprise, the clunker started right up, though the engine shook the steering wheel a little when she put the thing in reverse down the driveway. She hadn’t driven a car since that night at the gas station. It felt a little weird to be behind the wheel, but even stranger to be back here. Jackson was a beautiful place. . . but it didn’t feel the same way that it had before. She wasn’t sure if it was because of her age or the changes that were happening inside of her. The streets still looked the same, aside from some very minor changes to neighbor's houses. She barely paid any attention to her surroundings when Joel had driven her through town yesterday, and she was a bit scared to see the differences. She didn’t want to dwell on those thoughts or do any soul searching, so she reached out for the radio, pressing play on whatever CD had been shoved into it last.
Depeche mode began to blast over the speakers, and she let out a small sigh of relief. At least her music taste wasn’t horrible in high school.
But it was no wonder she didn’t have a girlfriend. Ellie wouldn’t have dated little Ellie either, that was for sure.
She felt a bit crazy to be driving in the opposite direction of town. Back when she lived here, town was the only place she was headed when she was allowed out of the house. It was no wonder why the two of you had never really crossed paths. She used to complain about how far off in the “middle of nowhere” Joel lived, but your farm had his ranch beat by fifteen minutes. The houses got fewer and farther in between, and despite how much Ellie truly did enjoy the city, she couldn’t deny how beautiful the countryside was. The sprawling fields, grazing animals, and splattering of wild flowers had her rolling down the windows of her car, ignoring the chill so that she could get a better look of her surroundings.
Even the air quality was better in Jackson.
She’d been down this road a few times in her life, having been in the backseat of Joel’s car every single time. She recognized your home from her memories, but your last name didn’t mean much to her back then. She slowed her car down to a crawl, staring at the large sign that sported your family name proudly.
Ellie would be proud of the farm too if it were hers. She bumped down the drive five minutes earlier than you had told her to show up, staring with wide eyes at your house. It was two stories with a balcony- white with green shutters. The wrap around porch was screened in, protecting you and any guests you might have over from bugs that thrive in the summertime heat.
Your stretch of land belonged on a painting, and for a second she worried if maybe she wasn’t the right friend for you. This house was too nice and Ellie. . . Ellie wasn’t very nice at all. She'd only talked to you for five minutes yesterday, but she got the feeling that you were a "good girl". You were wholesome, which wasn't how anyone in Ellie's life would choose to describe her. She slowly made her way up your front steps, and for a second she wondered if she should leave. It would probably be better if she did. Ellie could always just lie and tell Joel that she couldn’t find your house. . . he’d probably drop it after insulting her about her bad sense of direction.
Ellie couldn’t afford to get a crush on anyone right now either. It was horrible timing, and what would be worse is if you actually ever returned those feelings. How was she supposed to explain to you that she wouldn’t ever make a good partner? She couldn’t protect you from anything, not when any loud sounds or bright lights had her falling to her knees. She was careerless, depressed to the point where she had completely lost who she was, had a drinking problem, and was quite certain that she’d combust the second you’d touch her. She was touch and attention starved, but hadn’t remembered that she was even able to desire someone until she’d seen you yesterday-
You’d be dodging a bullet if she hightailed it right off of your property. So she turned on her heel and stared at her boots as she began walking back down your stairs. Her feet kicked up dirt as she made her way back to her jeep, hand already reaching into her pocket for her keys-
“Did I not hear you knocking on the door?” A feminine voice called out to her.
She sucked in a breath so hard that she let out a loud cough, eyes widening as she turned around to face the porch. You were wearing a pair of dirt stained jeans today, though your hair was fastened back with a white bow. Ellie, despite her previous need to protect you from herself, couldn’t fight off the urge to get closer. There was something different about you today. You were a bit manic, your hands already busying themselves with straightening out a few of the potted plants on your porch. You seemed a bit anxious, but you didn’t comment on it so neither did Ellie. Any boundaries you had yesterday with her were gone. You flashed her a wide smile, sauntering up the drive so that you could wrap her up in a tight hug.
Your arms were shaking as they weaved around her neck, pulling her in close. She froze, limbs locking up in surprise as she tried to fully grasp what was going on. You were treating her like an old friend, someone you were excited to see. Ellie didn’t know why you’d be so happy to see her. . . but then again, she was happy to see you. She remembered what Joel had said last night.
Maybe you were sick and tired of being alone.
Your bare arms were cold too- freezing as her fingers accidentally brushed the backs of them. Ellie realized that she had gotten here just in time. If anything, she cursed herself for not showing up twenty minutes earlier, if only to save you from whatever had you this shaken up.
“I probably knocked too quietly. Should have knocked louder, huh?” She mumbled, biting the inside of her cheek as she gave you a gentle squeeze.
She wasn’t used to holding someone like this that wasn’t Dina or Jesse. You felt nice in her arms. Your muscles weren’t hard or rigid like hers, you were all soft and rounded edges. Gentle curves and arms ready and willing to embrace her. Flushed cheeks and silk bows. You smelled wonderful too- sweet and floral, like Jasmine mixed with honey. She didn’t want to let you go, and you didn’t seem ready to end the hug either.
You were still quivering.
“Yeah, you should have.” You agreed, giving Ellie one last squeeze before taking a few unsteady steps back.
You hadn’t been completely sure whether or not she would show up today. Waking up this early was a lot to ask of anyone, let alone someone you had just met yesterday. Still, a part of you had hoped that she would be here. On days that were this bad you found it impossible to work, no matter how busy it kept you. You often spent “mental health days”  laid out by Abby’s grave or buried six feet under pillows and blankets in what used to be your shared bed.
Ellie’s presence changed things.
So you squared off your shoulders and cracked her a wide smile, praying that it looked genuine and not forced.
“Let’s hop in my truck and I’ll take you on a little tour of the property before we get started.” You tucked your bottom lip between your teeth as you watched the woman take a few steps closer to you.
Ellie looked like she wanted to say something but was holding herself back. You weren’t sure whether or not you would be able to handle her prying or the pity that would follow.
Your fingers twitched at your sides, wishing so deeply that you hadn’t woken up at all this morning. Ellie was beautiful- gorgeous even. You would have been head over heels if you had met her years ago, before. . . well, before Abby happened. Still, her beauty wasn't enough to completely distract you from your grief. A part of you felt guilty for even finding her attractive as you slid into the front seat of the truck.
Maybe that was why you’d had such a strange dream last night. Or maybe. . . maybe it wasn’t a dream at all. Maybe it really was Abby trying to tell you that it was okay to move on. That was confusing to even think about, and it made you count the months since her death on both of your hands, trying to gauge if enough time really had passed. You didn’t want to be alone anymore, but the thought of being in love with anyone seemed like an impossibility. Everything was broken. How could you ever love anyone the same way that you loved Abby? You’d just be doing that other person a disservice.
That’s right, you were cursed.
You could feel Ellie’s gaze on the side of your face as you made your way down the dirt road, up towards the hen houses. You blinked a few times, the apples of your cheeks heating up in embarrassment. Slowly you met her gaze, lips twitching up in a small smile as she quickly looked away from you, nervous over having been caught.
“My dad built ten large coops, so this whole fenced-in area right here is where the chickens graze.” You stopped the car and put it in park, keeping the old thing running like you usually did during your quick morning chores. Sometimes the poor truck had a hard time starting back up, and you’d probably burst into tears if your newfound friend had to walk a half mile back to the house with you.
“Do you guys have any problems with foxes?” She asked, keeping up with your fast pace as you unlatched the front of the fence for the both of you.
Your nose wrinkled in disgust, and you were quick to throw your arms up exasperatedly.
“Oh god, do we! I had to get someone out here to change out the fence just six months ago because one of those little fuckers had somehow managed to dig it’s way into their area. Killed seven of my poor girls.” You remembered how angry you were when you’d pulled up to the coops that morning. Burying seven dead hens wasn’t a pleasant experience for you, but it wasn’t something that was new. Still, you hated knowing that they’d suffered in their final moments.
“Jesus, I’m sorry.” Ellie looked around the area, finding it impossible not to notice how well kept everything was. The coops were freshly painted, the grass was gorgeous and plush- bright green under her feet. Truly, your farm was an oasis. She’d never seen anything quite like it before, and you'd barely even started the tour.
“Can I hold one?” She asked meekly, smiling up at you shyly as you turned to look at her. You didn’t exactly take her as the type of girl that would want to hold a chicken, but you were happy to oblige her.
“One of my mamas just hatched a few chicks. Would you want to hold-”
“Yes.” She quickly added, jogging off in the direction that you were pointing, eager to hold anything tiny and fluffy that you had to offer.
You were shocked at the laugh that bubbled its way out of your chest. A genuine, good natured laugh that you found hard to contain as she began impatiently tapping her foot as she waited for you to catch up.
“Didn’t take you for a chicken lover, city girl.” You teased, unlatching the door for her so that she could make her way inside.
The hens squawked excitedly at your appearance, realizing they’d be able to eat their fill of grass, bugs, and dried corn. A few ran over, crowding at your ankles. Rows and rows of nests were lined up along the walls. In the back of the coop were a few small rectangular doors that you could open, which was what you used to harvest eggs. Your dad’s old coops didn’t have anything fancy like that, so you grew up having your hands pecked at. You used to run back home to your mother with blood bruises and angry, raised skin.
“I love chicks.” Ellie said simply and the double meaning wasn’t lost on you.
As if on cue one of the chickens began pecking at the woman’s ankles, earning a small hiss of surprise from her. You snorted, biting your lip so that you wouldn’t laugh at her expense. “I can’t say the feeling is mutual, apparently.” You added playfully, looking around for the yellow poof balls.
“Old news.” She was smiling at you, and something in your chest began doing awful, uncomfortable flips. For a second you even felt a bit nauseous.
Ellie wasn’t Abby, but there was something similar about the two of them. The short haired girl seemed capable and strong. There was a physical sort of confidence in the way that she walked that told you that she knew how to handle herself. You watched as she shoved her hands in her pockets, shoulders squared off, feet shoulder length apart- and it had your lips parting.
Still, you remembered Joel talking about his daughter. . . saying that she was military. You couldn’t remember which branch she belonged to, but you could tell that she was well trained. You tried to imagine what Ellie would look like if she was put in a situation where she needed to protect herself, and you found a shiver running up your spine.
There was a coldness that had been in her eyes when the two of you had first met that had chilled you to the bone. You saw none of it when you looked into her eyes now, but. . . still. . . the thought terrified you. Had those capable hands ever killed anyone before?
You felt horrible even thinking that, even going as far as to give your thigh a small slap in punishment as you bent down, knees digging into the wood shavings and hay. The chicks didn’t seem off put by your small scowl. They saw you and instantly thought “food”, which had them clumsily running in your direction. You hadn’t heard her walk up beside you, only felt the sleeve of her long sleeve shirt brush against your arm as she sat back on her haunches beside you.
“It won’t scare them if I pick them up, will it?” She asked gently, slowly reaching a hand out so that she could brush it against their plush down feathers. They chirped contentedly, unaware of what “danger” even meant yet. You were guilty of babying your chickens, meaning none of them were scared of humans. They pecked at you when they were annoyed, but were never violent per say.
“Not at all. They might seem a bit unhappy, but it’s only because they’re hungry.”
You pressed your hand to your cheek as you watched the woman pick one of the chicks up, holding the tiny thing tightly against her chest so as to not drop it. There was something almost comical about seeing the woman look this gentle, her eyebrows furrowed in concentration as she tried not to hurt the tiny thing. It was adorable. Which was terrifying for you.
You were once again reminded of your dream. . . and you didn’t think you were ready to let Abby go. Not even when Ellie looked up at you excitedly, using her free hand to gesture towards the small creature in disbelief. Almost like she was scared that even talking would frighten it.
“So what do we do now?” Ellie asked, putting the chick down so that she could stand back up. You followed her lead, making your way back over towards the door.
“We open up all the doors and let them walk around for the day. I usually come back and get them back in their coops by sundown.” You let her know, leaving the door wide open as you moved coop to coop.
Ellie helped you, cutting down the time in half. The two of you were back in the truck in record time. You showed her the fields where you planted corn in the late summer to get ready for early fall. You pointed out the small flower garden you had taken upon yourself to cultivate, and then you pulled up to the green houses. Her jaw went slack as she took in all of the buildings.
“You do all of this yourself?” She needed to make sure she wasn’t imagining things. Sure, she was no farmer, but even someone like her knew just how much work this must be for you.
She couldn’t imagine you doing this all day, every day all by yourself. It kinda made her chest ache a bit for you. So when you nodded she took it upon herself to climb out of the truck, eager to do something to lighten the burden for you.
As the two of you approached what appeared to be the oldest of the greenhouses, she couldn’t help but realize that she’d been with you for about an hour. . . and she felt great. Better than great, she felt normal. She had been sent out here so that she could recover, and while she didn’t quite understand what that really and truly meant, being here with you felt right. Being around the animals felt therapeutic, and while Joel might have told you a little bit about her in passing, you didn’t know enough about Ellie to pass any sort of judgment or feel any sort of pity.
Even so, Ellie wasn’t sure she’d be against telling you about what happened. Something told her that you would be understanding. You knew what it felt like to lose people, and she was sure that you had regrets somewhere along the line. Everyone does when it comes to losing loved ones.
She hated that you had suffered enough to understand where she was coming from, but loved that she wasn’t alone for once.
The two of you walked in silence, and there was a heaviness in your eyes that let her know that you were thinking about something serious and sad. Ellie wondered whether your father was on your mind this morning. . . or perhaps your girlfriend. It wasn’t her place to ask, but that didn’t mean she didn’t want to.
“Want to help me water them?” You finally asked, motioning towards the tables of plants.
She nodded, but quickly turned to face you. She couldn’t count how many green houses you had on top of this one.
“Do we water all of those plants too?” She felt stupid the second that she asked the question, but even more so when you began to giggle.
Sounding stupid was worth it to hear the sound, so she sucked it up.
“Those green houses are newer and have a built in sprinkler system. We just have to worry about this one, thankfully. We’d be here all afternoon if not.” You began to head in the direction of the hose so that you could turn it on, your stomach tightening with hunger.
You knew the second you got back to the house and made breakfast that you’d be nauseous though. Bad days like this were always the same. You were hungry but you couldn’t eat. You wanted to distract yourself but nothing would work. You wanted to talk to someone but didn’t have any friends that you trusted enough to actually. . . onload on, and you were sick of your mom crying on your behalf.
“So you’re staying with Joel now? For how long?” You decided to make small talk as you handed her the hose, walking along with her as she painstakingly paid attention to every sprout.
She licked her lips before answering you, eyes flickering in a way that made you think that she might feel a bit nervous.
“I was. . . sent here. It’s not like I don’t love being home, because I kinda do. It’s just not something that I exactly chose for myself.” That didn’t feel like the whole truth, but you supposed that she would tell you whenever she was ready.
You played with the raw hem of your old t-shirt, suddenly anxious that you might have put her in a bad spot. Still, you found yourself wanting to know more about her.
“Do you have an addiction problem?” You realized how inappropriate it was to be so blunt. Your mouth went bone dry with panic, and you were quick to grab her hand, shaking your head. “A-All I’m trying to say is that my uncle had a really bad drug problem for years. He’s been clean and sober since last Christmas and is doing great. I don’t judge, that’s all. I’m proud of you, if anything.”
She gulped, looking down at your hand and noticing how close your body was to hers now. She fumbled to turn the hose off with one hand, trying to get her breathing under control. It was twice now that you were touching her like this, and she hated herself for wanting to wrap you back up in a hug so bad. She was also trying not to notice how plush and kissable your lips were.
You smelled great too, which made it hard for Ellie to think.
“Yeah, I guess I have a bit of an addiction problem,” She mumbled, but shrugged her shoulders soon after, contradicting herself. “But that’s not really why I’m here.”
Ellie would have to tell you eventually, she supposed. If the two of you were going to be as good of friends as Joel wanted, then she’d have to fess up eventually. It was better to get it out and in the open now rather than later. Plus. . . if she had some sort of a breakdown then maybe you’d be more understanding if you knew why it was happening.
“My therapist tells me that I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I was in the Marines and I had a really bad accident. So. . . it was hard for me to live alone.” Ellie stared down at a long-dead leaf on the ground and bent down to pick it up, gently playing with it’s crinkled edges.
“Did you have panic attacks? I have those sometimes too.” You wanted her to know that she wasn’t alone, as stupid as it might sound.
You wanted to relate to her without telling her that your girlfriend had also been a Marine. She was being vulnerable with you, and the last thing you wanted to do was make this moment about you by bringing up your deceased girlfriend.
“Yeah. . . Yeah, I have those a lot. Sometimes I lose track of time- disassociate. It’s scary for others to deal with, so my friends thought that it would be best if I were with Joel. There’s less triggers here than back in Chicago.” You could tell that she was still uncomfortable with the subject matter, but she was powering through.
Ellie appreciated that there wasn’t a hint of judgment in your tone. You genuinely seemed curious. . . and talking about herself like this felt good. Validating, even.
“What triggers you? I just want to make sure that I don’t overstep or accidentally do anything wrong-”
“No, no. You’re fine. It’s more so loud noises and bright lights.”
“So no gunshots?”
“Guns aren’t too bad. . . it’s more so car crashes. Explosions, you know?”
Your mouth went dry. You did know. It’s how Abby died, afterall. You hated that Ellie had gone through something similar. Your heart ached for her.
“Is that how you got this. . . ?” You began to brush your fingers against the scar over her eye. You froze as she flinched, guilt bottoming out your stomach as you quickly yanked your hand away.
She reached out to take your elbow into her calloused hand before you could drop your palm back down at your side, and pressed your fingers against the skin herself. Her skin was still soft, but raised and jagged. You’d never felt a scar this deep before. Still, it was warm under your touch. Alive.
The moment felt oddly intimate, and you kept your fingers there for a few seconds too long before dropping your hand back at your side. Ellie felt like she was going to explode. No one had ever wanted to touch her scar, let alone been allowed to.
“Yeah, It is.” She cleared her throat, grabbing one of her arms in her hands nervously. She was starting to realize that she didn’t mind being seen by you. “I’m legally blind in the eye now, which has been pretty hard to get used to.”
“So you can’t see at all out of it?” You questioned, beginning to walk back over towards the repotting station. You’d noticed a few sprouts that were getting a little too big for their pots, and the last thing you wanted was crowded roots.
She followed after you like a lost puppy, hot on your trail. “I can see shapes and colors. Movement, and everything. But if you held up your hand and asked me “how many fingers am I holding up”, I wouldn’t be able to tell you.” She’d practically had to relearn how to do everything again, as dramatic as that sounded. Losing the vision of one eye affected a lot more than one might think.
“Oh, shit.” You remarked, nose wrinkling up in sympathy. You couldn’t imagine how hard that must have been on top of dealing with the mental anguish of the accident.
“ ‘Oh, shit’ is right.” She agreed with a small smile, leaning her hip against the table as you began laying out the necessary supplies. She watched your hands as they moved expertly around the table, eyes locked on your fingers. “I used to be beautiful.” She joked absentmindedly, alluding to the scar that now marred her features.
“You’re still beautiful.” You said, fully concentrated on the task at hand.
You didn’t realize the weight that your words carried, nor Ellie’s reaction to them. She felt like a giddy teenager. She couldn’t stop herself from fidgeting with the buttons on her shirt. She was smitten.
You were the first person to treat her like an actual human being since the incident. This was the most alive she’d felt in almost a year. . . and she was talking about things. Not like she might talk to her therapist, it was different than that. She was talking to someone that wanted to get to know her, not just to diagnose her, but to understand her. It felt good. Really good. Sickeningly good.
And you thought she was beautiful.
“Do you want to help me repot these little guys?” You asked, motioning towards the tiny pots.
She was scared of killing your seedlings but nodded anyway, desperate for your approval. Ellie watched as you demonstrated the entire thing for her, praying to god she wouldn’t forget a step.
The two of you stood shoulder to shoulder, shaking out roots and gently tucking the plants into their new homes. It was calming- melodic, almost. The constant motion, the gentle noises of the wilderness all around you. Ellie could even feel herself getting good at it. Not as good as you, of course. . . but she wasn’t as bad as she thought she would be.
You watched as she rolled her sleeves up and over her forearms, taking a second to appreciate her hands. Once again, you felt guilty for being so attracted to her. Strands of auburn hair had fallen out from behind her ear and hung in her pale face as she focused on her task. Her strong hands worked methodically. Her veins, her knuckles, her forearms and biceps- Ellie wasn’t just beautiful but gorgeous.
‘Give me a sign, Abby. If I’m not reading too far into last night's dream. . . then just give me some sort of a sign.’ You thought to yourself, eyebrows furrowing as you packed more dirt around the seedling in your hand. You felt like you were being horrifically dramatic, but what else could you do?
You felt idiotic. Delusional, even.
Beside you Ellie continued to work, completely unaware of your building turmoil. Pot after pot, she was really getting the hang of it. Pack down a layer of dirt, shake out roots, pack dirt on top- repeat.
She  reached out for another one of the black plastic pots, sliding it over in front of her. She was so lost in her own thoughts that she almost didn’t hear the rattling. She’d been so close to covering up whatever was at the bottom with dirt, but the sunlight caught whatever it was just right.
It sparkled.
Ellie pinched the object between two dirt coated fingers, her eyebrows practically raising up to her hairline as she realized that it was a ring. A valuable looking one, at that.
“Uh. . . is this yours?” Ellie asked, showing it to you.
You blinked a few times at the ring, scared for a moment that you were hallucinating, because things like this only happened in movies. People asking for signs from the other side only for a ghostly apparition to pop up on screen.
Still, that was your promise ring in Ellie’s hand.
Your bottom lip quivered, eyes filling up with tears before you could even stop them. You reached out with gentle fingers, taking it into your hand graciously.
“Thank you.”
And you weren’t sure if you were talking to Ellie. . . or Abby.
how does Alex cope with finding/taking care of his injured so? like after a mining trip gone bad or something (/reader if possible, I hope you're day is going well!)
ALEXALEXALEXALEX lowkey I have never written for him soooo I did a little bit of research and hopefully it isn't too ooc. My headcanons for this man are STRONG DAMN
---
ok so FIRST I feel like Alex actually wouldn't be the one to find you if the injury was mining accident
He doesn't really go in that area yknow? Plus I bet he thinks "yeah. They'll be fine. :)"
Let's just say he DOES find you knocked out in the mines I would say he is gonna have one of two reactions:
1. Manly! Brave! No worries I will save you!
Alex finds you on floor 119, passed out but not visibly injured. He tries to wake you gently but then he ends up scooping you up into his arms and carrying you out.
He will take you back to your place where he will wash your body of any dirt (and bandage any injuries), and then let you rest. He will be there when you wake up. :)
or
2. PANIC!!!
Alex has no idea what the fuck he should do. He isn't dumb as bricks but his brain isn't able to process what is happening fast enough in order to do something about it. He will probably take you straight to Harvey because he knows that Harvey can help.
Again, he will stay with you until you will wake up. But, he will probably feel really stupid for not being able to help you more. Poor boy might be in a bit of shock, even if you aren't badly injured he will still compare the situation to his mother's death.
Extra angst if it was a near-death situation! But lets save that for another time...
Now Alex is in charge of supporting you through recovery yay
If the injuries you suffered were pretty serious I'd say Alex isn't thrilled with having to drop everything and help you
BUT he loves you so of course he will help you in any way he can
If the injuries aren't awful but you still need help trust me he will help, but he will also take the time he needs for himself too
Kinda like a half on half off schedule
"Hey babe! I'm gonna go for a run. Do you need me to get you anything before I leave or need something picked up while I'm out?"
"When you're better we can start going on some walks to get your energy back up! Whenever you're ready."
Alex might get slightly anxious about you getting better quickly so that life can go back to how it usually is
I feel like Alex doesn't adapt well to change? So if your guy's routine is thrown off because of your injury he is anxious to get it back to normal
Not because he doesn't like taking care of you, but more like because he feels calm when he knows what to expect in life
On another note I feel like Alex would give some pretty bomb massages during your recovery
If you are confined to a bed or limited movement he will do his best to help you get in healthy stretches
Physical health trainer vibes B)
Right after one of your first showers since the accident Alex comfortably lays you on your stomach to give you a light back massage. :> Or elsewhere depending on where you're hurt and what is sore.
He'd also make sure to keep you nice and stretched so you don't get too stiff from being still all day.
If you don't want stretches that is okay too! He just wants to make sure the rest of you is all healthy besides the injured part
In conclusion: he will take good care of ya :)
「Thoughts of my troubles crumble to pieces and scatter」
★ sometimes, you have your own dumber moment.
★ not like academically stupid, but the fact your own decisions could lead you into troubles. How so?
★ you cannot walk an inch without yourself getting tripped and fell as a result. You thought sliding on a stairway wearing a thick fluffy coat would decrease the falling damage — spoiler alert, it doesnt. And once, you also covered yourself in snow and call it a snow bath, then ended up fell sick (sampo behaviour/j).
★ and ofcourse someone would be so worried about you, none other than gepard himself.
★ he thought you were only clumsy, but then he realizing you are so careless and act to an extreme degree.
★ it means, you just cant stay out of trouble.
★ knowing that fact, gepard would be so cautious and protective of your act.
★ "y/n, I will bring the stuff. That looks so heavy," gepard insisted.
★ " why? I'm strong enough to bring it myself!" you asked curiously. He never answered back after.
★ though he remains quiet, deep inside he's caring for you and dont want you to get hurt! Only if he's able to express those words instead leaving you clueless with his protective and aware act.
★ he doesn't want his love to be hurt, it's like his duty to taking care of you. Dark and menacing alleyway at night? Let's take another path! Suspicious looking food in shop? Gepard will cook you his food instead! You fell off the stair? He'll pick you up as if you're a princess!
★ "y/n, y/n? Are you hurted? Do you need me to take you to the doctor? If there's anything sprained, please tell me!" his worriness that soon dominates him.
★ you'll reply with a chuckle instead. Your own recklesness somehow gave you immunity to pain at this point, but watching how gepard looks so worried of your state, you wanted to lighten up the mood. "How silly.. You don't need to exaggerates it so much! I will just sleep it off and everything will be fineeee,"
★ ofcourse your solution to your own trouble is sleeping, sleeping is your cure by this point.
★ however, gepard find your answer not pleasant to him. He would be your personal doctor and will feed you many healthy food to speed up the recovery of your possible injuries.
★ you can't help but to fall in love with him again. His caringness and the way he treat you, it's full of countless love within.
★ he'll wrap both of his arm around you securely, he find himself relaxed whenever he doing it with you.
★ "I never want to see you get hurt ever again, my love.." he whispered. As if the sadness will soon revolves in him, you proceed to assure him with a kiss on his cheek.
★ "thank you, I appreciate that you always looking out for me," you said as you caressing his cheek. Soon, it left him feel embarrassed; yet a burst of happiness filling him, he always feel like his heart beats faster whenever you do it. You can even see he blushed so hard, you always love this reaction <3
★ before both of you fell asleep, you both will cuddling as gepard would humming you a lullaby.
★ if you are around, he feels comfortable with his singing, but mostly he feel more happy if he's able to do it around the one he loved.
★ his voice is so endearing, its a bliss for your ears. There's something in his voice that manipulate you to feel sleepy, starting your journey into the dreamland.
★ noticing you fall asleep, gepard would brush your hair to the back and kiss your forehead.
★ "goodnight, love".
Kara hangs some four feet off the floor, palms sweating, legs trembling, and tries not to close her eyes. Four feet might as well be forty. Might as well be four hundred. The move is a drop knee and a reach up with the left hand and she can do it, has done it before, has to do it again because otherwise fear wins this one and since when does Kara Danvers let fear win? She turns the knee in but the left hand has a mind of its own and it wont let go. If she lets go she’s going to fall. And if she falls…
She pushes off the wall and drops the four feet with ease, lets her knees fold, indulges in an unnecessary backwards flop onto the mat. She stays there for a long moment, eyes on thick wooden rafters high above, chest heaving with what feels even to her to be unnecessary drama. The absurdity of it all would make her laugh if the frustration of it all weren’t burning hot through her veins. It’s a V0. It’s a climb for beginners. For Kara, it should have been nothing.
But today it’s something. Alex would say, we are taking each day for what it is. We are meeting each day as we are. We are refusing to swell in the past. Easy for Alex to say.
Kara rolls to her feet to take up a perch on the cubbies just off the mat. A couple of minutes and some water and she can try again. It’s about the strength of her will, isn’t it? The body is strong. Not as strong as it once was, but strong enough. It’s the mind that falters. A boy no older than 14 scrambles up a route of tiny chips, his weight all on his fingertips and toes, defying gravity 16 feet straight up with no hesitation, and Kara looks away. There is nothing, and everything, to fear. And isn’t that what she’s come here for? To look fear in the eye and win? Because if she wins…
“Injury?”
Kara startles so hard she almost knocks her own water bottle out of her hand. The woman who settles down onto the cubbies next to her suppresses a smirk. Kara tries without success to suppress her own heartbeat. Green eyes meet hers for half a second and flicker away. Suddenly Kara finds herself fascinated by the loose thread on the seam of her climbing pants.
“Sorry,” the newcomer says. “I know it’s hell of an assumption. I just thought- I’ve seen you around a couple of times.”
Kara has seen her around too, because, and she means this in the gayest possible way, shoulders. The woman beside her is, according to all available evidence these past few weeks, allergic to shirts. Addicted to sports bras. And she’s clearly never skipped a training day in her life, because shoulders. Has Kara mentioned the shoulders? And let’s not talk about the abs. Kara cannot, in fact, look away from the abs. She makes a noble effort to redirect her attention to the lose thread.
“I just joined a couple weeks ago,” she chokes out.
“Lena.”
Kara is so busy looking the other way she hesitates far too long before taking the hand offered to her. Who shakes hands these days anyway? But she takes it, and then she hesitates another moment too long before letting go, because warm.
“Kara,” she replies.
“You don’t move like a new climber, Kara,” Lena comments. “But I never see you on anything steeper than a V1, so I’ve been wondering. And it’s super rude of me,” she concedes, nudging Kara with another smirk, “ but I thought I’d just ask because, as it happens, I am also working some lower grade problems right now because I tore my ACL a little while back.”
“You tore your-”
Lena waves her off. “Happens. So I was wondering if-”
“Happens?” God. Humans are fragile. And reckless. And well muscled. And warm. God. Focus.
“So I was wondering if you wanted to be my injury recovery accountability buddy. You know? We can hype each other up, remind one another that there’s no shame in easier climbs. Maybe we can meet up and do a couple workouts off the wall, some prehab, some core. That sort of thing.”
What Kara should say is, “Sure, but if we’re doing that, I’m definitely gonna need your number.” Maybe not. Maybe something similar to that but smoother and paired with some kind of winning smile. Kara has never before this moment worried about whether her smile is winning or not. What she says instead is, “I’m actually not injured. It’s- I can’t get out of my head.”
Lena nods slowly, her gaze joining Kara’s on the loose thread now twisted tight between Kara’s fingers.
“So…” she says after a long pause, “Was it a fall?”
For an instant, Kara is there again. And it is four hundred feet rather than four, and the concrete rushing up so fast below her, and the taste of ash in her mouth, the smell of iron and blood choking and choking her as the wind whips past, and then the crack-
“Yeah,” she says. Her fingers flex. “And now I can’t- And now I’m scared of heights. And I’m-” Human, she almost says. “And I’ve lost a lot of strength.”
Lena reaches out to tug the loose thread from between her fingers. “Just because it’s in your head,” she says, “Doesn’t mean it isn’t an injury.”
That’s the kind of thing Alex would say. That’s the kind of thing that would make Kara want to roll her eyes on a good day - would, on a bad day, make her want to scream and rage against the unfairness of a solar flare that might just never end, against the tedium of building strength and endurance one slow painful day at a time, against the weeks piling one on the other, the waiting, the fear, the courage that never comes back to her no matter how hard she tries.
Coming from Lena, it isn’t so bad. Lena’s hand lingers on Kara’s a moment too long, and Kara decides the line. “Guess I’ll need your number if we’re gonna be accountability buddies.” She tries the winning smile too, risks a glance back up into those too green eyes, just for good measure.
Lena laughs. Her hand is still on Kara’s, that loose thread between her fingers. “Guess so,” she replies.
It felt too real | Lee felix
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
genre : angst to fluff
summary : sometimes when we dream, it feels too real to be true...
📎rei's notes : i didn't feel like posting on my main so, i posted it here on my spam blog🫥 in other words, the format is different :/
Felix came over to your section. He smiled when he spotted you in the crowd. He waved his hands at you, which obviously made other fans think he was just waving at everyone in general.
The music quiets down. Felix smiled at you as you returned a smile back. Suddenly a gunshot was fired. Felix's eyes widened as he panicked for the safety of you, his members and his fans.
Everyone began running out of the concert hall. The security guards patrolling immediately chased down the shooter while some helped to evacuate the fans to safety.
Felix overlooked the crowd, trying to see if anyone got injured. When his eyes landed on yours again, the smile on your face faltered.
Felix's mouth gapped, he knew that meant you were the one who got shot. Your eyes rolled back as everyone's screams around you became deafening.
"Y/N! SOMEONE HELP! CALL THE AMBULANCE!", felix's voice could be heard on the speaker through the attached microphone on his face.
He jumped down the crowd, making his way to you. Tears were streaming down his face when he finally held you in his arms.
"no no no NO! SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE!", felix pleaded as his cries got louder.
Your eyes were shut, barely having the energy to open back up. you could barely hear his voice.
"Y/n...please stay awake for me, just a little while baby, they're going to get help", felix kissed your forehead.
You sluggishly nodded your head. He held your hand in his.
"Did anyone else get hurt?....", you spoke.
Felix shook his head before muttering out a 'no'. He was surprised to see you more concerned about the well-being of the mere strangers around you who he calls his fans.
"That's good... it's alright felix. I'll be alright... we'll be alright", you squeezed his hand lightly with all the strength you had left before you passed out.
Felix's breath hitched as his heart pounded loudly. He heard over his in-ear that the shooter was apprehended. The police were on the scene and paramedics are making their way to felix.
"felix, I need you to calm down, we are sending the paramedic over, be strong alright", he heard the voice of the staff in charge of their in-ear monitor.
He nodded his head even though he knows they can't see him.
"Can you tell me where you are so that the paramedics can find you. Calm down okay, we are here for you"
Felix tried to control his sobs as he looked around, trying to identity the pen he is at before telling the staff through the microphone.
"Felix, the paramedics was coming your way, okay? she's is strong, she'll make it through it. Hold on, alright?", the staff tried to calm him down.
Felix mumbled out an 'okay' which the staff sighed in relief.
"Hold on please", felix leaned his head against your forehead. His tears dripped down your hair.
The paramedics took over you. Felix was hesitant to let them touch you but he knew they were his only hope of keeping you alive at this point. The paramedics did their thing that they knew best.
felix let out a sigh of relief when the paramedic said you were stable and you are going to make it out alive.
"Thank you...", felix sniffed as he quickly followed the paramedics into the ambulance.
NEWS HEADLINES
The stray kids fan who got shot in the unsuspected shooting during their concert was felix's fiancee which he announced a couple months back. Her identity is being protected and fans are strongly discouraged to post her pictures online. According to JYP ENT. Felix's fiancee is recovering well and would be making a speedy recovery soon.
Felix hopes that fans would be considerate doing this time of period as he takes a hiatus. He hopes those fans involved in the tragedy, a speedy recovery.
Official stated that no one else got serious injury except felix's fiancee who was targeted by a angry fan. The identity of the shooter is being protected due to law. Rumored that the identity shooter will be revealed once the trial begins.
Till then, upcoming fansign, vlive and concert events would be postponed. Officials would be tightening up their security measures to prevent the same/similar unfortunate events from happening again.
Felix's eyes shot opened. He sat up, heart pounding loudly as he tried to calm down. He turned around to look for you. You stirred around in your sleep before opening your eyes.
"felix? is everything alright?", you asked still feeling drowsy.
He cleared his throat before nodding his head. "I'm fine...". You looked at him with worried eyes.
"Come here", you opened your arms wide. A small smile appeared on his face as he layed down on your chest. You stroked his hair gently, making him fall back asleep quickly.
The realistic nightmare was soon forgotten as he found peace. This time when he slept, he dreamed about the good things only.
Hey Liv, I hope you had a good weekend☺️ I’m not sure if you take requests but I can’t stop thinking about Steve finding fem reader passed out in the embassy somewhere because she’s pregnant with Javi’s baby👀 Maybe she’s been off a while and Javi’s away somewhere with Carrillo
Disclaimer: I didn't finish Narcos and I got so excited to get a request I stayed up to get this out.
Warnings: Mentions of smut. A little angsty. Pregnancy related illness.
Uncle Steve
The office was empty. The silence was only interrupted by the ticking of the clocks as he passed them and the click of his shoes against the floor. Each step finally taking him home to Connie. He's almost at the elevator when he sees the light on. It's odd, no one should still be here. They've been quiet as hell if they're still here. Putting it down to someone being forgetful, he pops into the office to switch off the lamp. That's when he sees you. Laying on the floor.
Panic flares in him, but he tries to stay calm. No good will come of him losing his head. What does he do? Pulse. Recovery position. Airways. Words whizz through his mind as his hands work. You're warm, that's good. His hand searches for yours. He doesn't know why, to comfort you? His fingers graze your wrist, and he feels it. A pulse. He didn't have to look too hard for it. It must be strong. At that point, you started to come around. Thank fuck because he had no idea what to do. Connie!
"Hey. You're alright. I've got you. I'm gonna call for help." You give a weak nod as he pulls your head into his lap. The phone crashes to the floor as he reaches for it. "Shit!" Pulling on the cord, he fishes it back. It takes five rings for Connie to answer. He counts while he prays.
"Connie. I'm at work. One of the women I work with, I found her passed out." Give him a gang full of guns to face and he'd keep his head. Medical emergencies were not his forte.
"I'm okay." You managed, hearing the frantic worry in his tone.
"She's conscious? Be careful letting her sit up. You don't want her passing out again. Get her checked out right away." He hears Connie's advice. Like he wasn't going to take you straight to a hospital as soon as he could.
"Thanks, Con." He is genuinely grateful. He hated the moments it was just him dealing with this.
"Woah. Take it easy." He tries to slow you as you sit up, Connie's words in his head. Please don't pass out again.
Leaning back against the desk. You crack your eyes open to look at Steve. He looks how you feel. "I'm okay. I just need to eat, I think. My head hurts too."
Steve notices the red mark on your forehead. Maybe from the desk on your way down. He's on his feet and to the kitchen. He raids the cupboard for sweet treats. Grabs a cup of water. Then he grabs the ice pack Javi keeps in the freezer for those really bad hangover days.
Returning like a triumphant Labrador with a ball, he places the items next to you. All except the ice pack, which he gently holds to your head.
Your pride hurts more than your head as you let Steve care for you. It was stupid to skip dinner but this lead could bring Javi back. He was out there chasing leads when he could be here. He needed to be here. There were some things you couldn't talk about over the phone.
"Here." Steve holds up a packet of something covered with coconut. The smell turns your stomach. He jumps when you start to wretch.
"I'm sorry. It's the smell of them." A connection instantly is made in Steve's mind. One that terrifies him as well as angers him.
"Are you pregnant?" His eyes are wide as he asks. "We need to get you, both, checked out."
"I'm fine. Like I said, I need to eat. Just something without coconut." You fish out a much more appealing plain cookie.
"You've been here all hours. And out in the field. If you were my wife…" He regrets the words as he says them. He doesn't know what your situation is.
Shame blushes your cheeks. Steve takes a stab in the dark. "Wait, the father doesn't know, does he?"
"No. Not yet." You confirm his suspicion.
"You need to go get checked out. Is there someone you can call?" It's at this point Steve realises that he knows nothing about you.
He knows that you are a hard worker. Diligent. Somehow, in an office full of men you manage to keep off the radar. Objectively, he knows you're beautiful. In most places like this your presence would be like throwing a stake to a pack of wolves. He would have thought every single, and a few not so single, man in the office would be sniffing around you. Somehow you've managed to command respect without creating waves. Everyone keeps their distance and lets you work. Even Javi toed the line. He never flirted with you. He was always polite with you. Come to think of it…no. There was no way. You wouldn't give Javi the time of day, you were too smart to get mixed up with him or anyone in the office.
The cookie you ate wasn't sitting right. "I feel sick."
"Come on. We're taking you to the hospital."
An hour passed before they would let Steve see you again. He paced the floor like it was his child you were carrying. Something about seeing you on the floor. Looking so fragile and helpless. Even when you were anything but. If it were Connie, he'd want someone with her. When he entered your room, he was happy to see you looked much better. He came to sit beside you. "How are you?"
"Better. I told you I just needed to eat." You nodded at the discarded tray on the table.
"You did." He smiled before adding "So do you want me to call Javier?"
There was no point in denying it, Steve was obviously more observant that Javi had given him credit for. Even though you had been incredibly careful at work. No longing glances. No favouritism. Minimal conversation. Come to think of it, maybe you had gone too far the other way. Javi was charming. Who wouldn't want to talk to him or to curry favour with him?
Javier burst through the doors two hours later. Running right into Steve. "What happened? Where is she?"
Anger boiled in Steve. You'd been working hard to look for leads for Javier yet he had no idea what was going on with you. Grabbing Javier by the shirt he slammed him into the nearest wall. "You fucked around in the office and now I'm dealing with it. Did you know? Is that why you ran off on this lead?"
Confusion furrows Javier's brow. "What? Know what?
"She's pregnant." Steve loosen his grip a little. It seemed like Javier was genuinely stunned and concerned.
"No, I didn't know. I had no idea. We've only…a few times." Javier knew than didn't matter or that he'd uses a condom. It only took one swimmer as his sex Ed teacher once said.
"So she's just some casual fuck? In our office, really?" Steve's head spins with the momentum of Javier changing their positions.
Steve is the one now pinned to the wall, with his partner's fist twisted in the front of his shirt. It takes Steve a minute to see where Javier's anger is coming from. "What? Don't you like being called out on your bullshit?"
Javier bares his teeth before his gaze flicks in the direction of your room for just a second. Then it all becomes clear. "Shit. You care about her, don't you? Poor girl. That might actually be worse."
Javier huffs a laugh in agreement.
"How long have you been…?" He pressed for details.
"We've been dating for seven months."
"Seven fucking months? And dating? With like flowers and shit? Since when do you date?"
"Since her." A smile tugs at Javier's lips.
He started dating because you told him he'd have to work for you. You told him that he could have one night with you now. A night that you would completely make worth his while. Or he could work for it. He could get to know you then he could have more than one night. For the first few weeks that night became more tempting. Everything about you enticed him. Then as time wore on he knew he couldn't settle for just one night. It took five months for you to give him that night. But how right you were, it was completely worth his while. Javier had been with a lot of women on and off Uncle Sam's dime. None of them could hold a candle to you. You kept him up to the crack of dawn. Taking your pleasure from him and returning it, what felt like ten fold, to him. He was already hopelessly in love with you by then. He confessed as much the next morning as you lay on his chest. Since then he'd taken you on dates, treated you like a queen. Things had come up to keep you apart so he'd only known you touch a couple more times. He couldn't work out what type of luck it was that you were now carrying his child.
"Are you okay?" Javier's words ghost across your forehead as his lips leave a kiss there. "Are you both, okay?"
Damn, Steve. "Yes, we are."
"Steve told me.It is mine, right?" Fuck. He curses himself. Of all the stupid things to say. Especially when he's into too deep to care. Part of him wouldn't give two shits who's it was. As long as you were his.
"You'd think it was Steve's, the way he's been clucking about." You joked to relieve his obvious tension. "Yes, Javier. It's yours. I'm keeping it. I can do this by myself. You don't have to.."
Javier couldn't even stand to hear you finish that sentence. He silenced you with a press of his lips.
"I will be here. For them. For you if you want me to."
"I do, Javi."
"Good because Steve might kill me."
"DEA agent slain by partner is not a good headline."
"Ex-partner."
"What?"
"Let's quit. Let's go back home. Let's do this right."
"Are you serious?"
"I have done and seen so much bad shit here. The only time I don't think about or see it when I close my eyes is when I'm with you. I'm not risking losing that or our baby." His warm hand spread over your stomach.
Steve paced the hallway again. He was starting to think he might actually wear a groove in it. Then Javier appeared, a smile on his face even wider than the one he'd had all those months ago, the last time Steve had been pacing outside your hospital room.
"It's a girl. I have a daughter. You wanna meet her?" Javier slapped his ex-partner on the back in a celebratory hug.
"Well, if that isn't karma. When she's all grown up you'll be chasing off men like you."
"That's not funny, Steve."
"Oh, it is."
"Shut up, you fucking hillbilly."
This first Javier's daughter hears of her Uncle Steve is his laughter over the grinding of her father's teeth.
