So this was originally gonna be in a reblog of someone else's post, but then I decided to just make my own because it was getting very long and unwieldy.

Look, Solangelo is cute and all, I genuinely do love them. But I also think there's something to be said about how they got together offscreen (or off-page I guess) so we didn't really get to see what that relationship was like in its early days.

Like, obviously it doesn't have to be a slowburn, not everything has to be a slowburn. Not every relationship has to have drama. To have big, exciting emotions, sometimes it can just be... Chill. And relaxed. And conflict-free. And ok fine I'm LYING I WANT THE MELODRAMA I WANT THE CONFLICT I WANT IT SO BAD but like I get it, he's been through enough, I should be happy that he's able to count on at least one thing. But that's also why I'm so excited for TSATS, because I. Want. Drama. I want the two of them nearly dying in each other's arms! Is that really so wrong?

I think the main criticism basically stems from the fact that, because we don't get to see how their relationship builds from acquaintances to friends to lovers, we don't really get the catharsis that we, or at least I, felt like Rick had been leading up to. At least, not in The Hidden Oracle, which is the only TOA book that I've read so far, and also it was kinda long ago, so I might be totally wrong about all this, just a disclaimer. But from my perspective, it looks very... Safe. And ok, I'll say it, sanitized.

Like. Yes. Nico deserves a calm, stable relationship. But he also deserves to have a moment, pre-solangelo, where he fucking breaks down into tears. Why? Maybe he had a nightmare. Maybe it's just dawned on him how much he's lost and how much he's endured and holy shit, it's a lot, and he's just somehow expected to keep this poker face on all the time, and he just fucking can't anymore. Or maybe it's because Will told him he's gonna need to stay a few extra days, and he feels insulted and humiliated and weak, because he doesn't even have it that bad, he's fine, why are you doing this to him? Why are you treating him like a baby? Why are you wasting your time with him when there are people in this same building that he can feel slowly dying? And to be comforted and held by Will, and told that whatever it is that's making him so upset, he's here. And, after a brief calm before the storm, Nico impulsively pulls Will down to his height by the collar of his shirt and kisses him. And then he starts to panic, like why did he just do that? What's wrong with him? Oh gods oh fuck Will's totally gonna hate him now. And Will's just sitting there like... Do it again. Please? And Nico's like... Huh? You... Want him to kiss you again? Well ok, if you insist.

And another thing, Will deserves to have some character flaws! And I don't just mean being insecure about his powers and working too much, I mean some actual flaws, things that can make it hard to cooperate with other people. Like, maybe he's unintentionally blunt and rude. Maybe he's got a secret vindictive streak (and I mean REALLY secret since it probably takes a lot to make that guy mad) that mirrors Nico's and forces him to actually confront, and ultimately forgive, the ugliest parts of himself. Hell, maybe he's the jealous type! Or at least is overprotective to such an intensity that it comes off as jealousy and even a lack of trust without him realizing it. And maybe those overprotective tendencies stem from what happened to Lee and Michael.

Speaking of which, holy crap, LEE AND MICHAEL. This is like. One of the few things we know about Will pre-BOO. That he's lost two of his older brothers, and he didn't even get to go to their funerals because he had to stay behind and heal people because he was a WAR MEDIC at 12. So he didn't really get to process any of those emotions, he just had to kinda push them down and do his job. And the damage that can do to someone's psyche is... Let's just say it's not great.

Hey, maybe his workaholic tendencies also stem from that trauma, maybe he's subconsciously using the selfless medic mindset as a coping mechanism to distract himself from his own emotional pain. Maybe Nico, who has suffered great loss himself, helps him finally process and grieve in a healthy way, which would also mitigate the criticism of it being one-sided, or of Will trying to fix Nico.

All of that would be great!

Except... We don't really get to see it. Not in canon, anyway. Rick, to the best of my limited knowledge, doesn't explore their dynamic beyond 'hehe sunshine and darkness isn't that cute?'.

Again, I could be totally wrong on this! I'd absolutely LOVE IT if I was wrong, and that would actually be even more motivation for me to get off my lazy ass and buy the rest of TOA. As it stands, though... All of this is merely a daydream.

Okay so... I have this idea that the gods would hang out and gossip about their kids– make ships and bets – and I can't take the thought out of my head, so listen out:\

Once in a while some gods (obviously not all of them, we wouldn't want WW3 to start) would meet up to 'spy' on their kids. They did this one day every some months, so they would each make a bets in favor or against different ships and see how things elaborated the next time they met.

Everyone thinks Aphrodite is the most invested on this game, but it is actually Athena (Athena loves to win and she has to show that she knows everything)

Whenever they make a bet Athena is the last one to give her vote because she doesn't want anyone to copy her.

Aphrodite goes all crazy trying to make her ships happen.

All of them expectantly wait for their ship to happen (some even interfere)

When a ship actually happened you can see almost every god exchanging money and favors. You could see who won and who lost by the changes in their domains.

When Percy and Annabeth where in their first quest (with Grover) lots of gods made bets on them. Athena voted that they were not going to get together.

Aphrodite and Poseidon voted that they would. (though Poseidon just be in contrary with Athena)

Aphrodite for the next couple of years did everything in her power to make Percabeth happen. (Even visit Percy in person)

When Percabeth had their first kiss (just before Percy makes a volcano explode) somehow no god saw it, so the bet continued. And slowly more and more gods got into the bet.

Eventually, just after the first war, Percy and Annabeth have their second kiss and this time the gods see it. Olympus went crazy (Zeus got even madder at Percy, because he did not only reject immortality but he had made him loose the bet; now he owed Apollo a favor.)

Aphrodite was so happy that she popped up in front of them and hugged the couple. They were all "what was that for?" And Aphrodite only said: "I won a bet to Athena, who is the dumb one now?"

And then the next big bet was solangelo.

Hades and Apollo were the two biggest fangirls ever over Nico and Will. Hades made a solangelo headcannon and made it viral through the underworld.

Nico was really confused when he next visited his dad and everyone was talking about his relationship with Will and all he could think was: "Are we this obvious that even the dead know?"

“Ugh, I’m tired.”

“That’s why we’re going to sleep, Ghosty.”

Nico hummed noncommittally as he flopped down onto his bed. It was late, nearly midnight, and he was more than ready to be dead to the world. They had had a busy day of classes, training (for Nico), working (for Will), and dealing with the general chaos that came with living at Camp Half-Blood.

Will’s siblings let the head counselor sneak off to the Hades cabin for the night. While they all teased their older brother about having a “fun night,” they all really just wanted him to get a good night’s sleep, and cuddling with his boyfriend almost always did the trick.

After doing the minimal to get ready for bed, the boys hit the lights and shuffled beneath the covers. Immediately, their hands found each other, and they tangled their limbs together. It was easy, a comfortable routine they developed over the course of their relationship. They were hardly cuddly in public, so their private time together had to make up for that. And it was really just that—cuddling and sleeping together—and nothing more.

“Good night, Neeks.”

“Good night, Sunshine.”

Will shifted onto his back, giving Nico the space to move even closer so that his head rested on the blonde’s chest.

It was nice and cozy. Perfect for sleeping.

And yet.

Will laid there for a solid fifteen minutes, not thinking anything in particular as he stared off into the darkness. He tried not to shift restlessly so as not to disturb his boyfriend, but that just made him stiff and less than comfortable.

He tried to focus on Nico’s breathing for the next fifteen minutes. The boy’s breaths had evened out, but Will had a feeling that he wasn’t quite asleep yet either.

Why couldn’t he sleep? Was something bothering him? Normally, he’d have his to do list for the next day on his mind. When that kept him up, he simply got up, wrote it down, then climbed back in bed and was out like a light. But that’s not what was happening now. He squared away his to do list earlier, on a small note that sat on his desk in the infirmary.

What was on the list? Maybe if Will recounted it to himself, he’d fall asleep out of boredom.

Cut bandages. Well, that was a daily task, but sometimes it was nice just to check it off at the end of the day.

Check inventory. A weekly task, but sometimes Will would compulsively check it, just in case, or when there was nothing else to do.

Practice nutrition plans. Since the son of Apollo hoped to be a real doctor someday, he’d been exploring different medical fields to see how he liked them. He was currently exploring the nutritionist route, which could help as a family physician or pediatrician anyway. He would ask the Demeter kids about different vegetables, herbs, grains, all that stuff, and practice writing up specific diets for hypothetical needs. It was kind of interesting so far, but not Will’s favorite.

I wonder what kind of plan a child of Hypnos might need. If you consider the narcolepsy, possible lack of sunlight, there’s bound to be some nutritional deficiency going on, he thought to himself. Hmm, deficiency. De-fi-shi-en-see. That’s how you spell it, right? D-E-F-I—she-en-see—C-I-E—defishy—um where was I? Okay, wait, D-E—honestly, who spelled this word this way? It’s confusing. Why is C-I-E pronounced “she”? What—

“Will,” a stern voice pulled Will from his musings. He turned his head down to see his boyfriend squinting up at him in the dark, his eyes having adjusted long ago. “You’re thinking too loud. You’re practically yelling.”

“Wha—that doesn’t even make sense,” Will responded, his voice sounding loud in the quiet of the cabin.

“It does. It’s loud. You’re loud.” Nico shifted so he was more even with Will and could look him in the eyes properly. “What are you thinking about that’s making your head wrinkle?” He poked Will directly in the forehead to punctuate his point.

Will swatted his hand away. Nico kept looking at him and he sighed. Whatever. “Why are words words?” He looked back up at the ceiling, confusion clear on his face.

Not hearing an immediate response, he turned to see his boyfriend staring at him, his expression a mix of perplexity, incredulity, and amusement. The son of Hades simply raised an eyebrow, apparently not planning on giving Will the answer he so desperately needed.

So, he continued. “You know, like, words. Why are they what they are? Why is the word ‘word’ a word? Why is it spelled like it is? And why does it mean word? Actually, how do you even define ‘word’?” He tapped his chin in thought, once again staring at the ceiling. He saw Nico glance up at the ceiling out of the corner of his eye, probably mocking Will. But the son of Apollo was too preoccupied to comment.

“A word is a word,” Nico replied, like it was that easy.

“You can’t use the word being defined in the definition,” he rolled his eyes, like Nico should’ve obviously thought about this before and know that that’s not an acceptable answer.

Will took a breath to begin another senseless rant about language when his boyfriend cut him off. “Words are words, letters are letters, languages are way they are because people decided that’s how they wanted to communicate. Nothing more to it. Please sleep.” His deadpan words were probably meant to be patronizing or flippant in some way, but Will actually felt like that answered his wonderings quite well.

“Huh,” Will said, mostly to himself. He paused as the words processed in his brain. “That makes sense.”

“Oh my gods,” is all Nico said before he rolled over, his back to Will. “Go to sleep, idiota.”

Will beamed, throwing his arms around the dark-haired boy to hug him from behind. “I’m so lucky my boyfriend is a genius.”

“You’re dumb, now sleep.”

“Okayyy,” Will drew out. But now that his mind was satisfied, he remembered that he had an exhausting day and that he really really wanted to sleep.

He settled in further before whispering a “good night” to the air, the boy next to him already breathing deeply.

A/N: Yes, I am a proud member of the Riordanverse fanbase :) this is something I wrote for my friend who lives for Solangelo caz it was their birthday and I know they stalk my account 👀

I also had a conversation with said friend about the Riordanverse characters' coffee/tea preference which inspired me to write this. If you want headcanons for the other characters on their preferred drink, lemme know! Also could someone suggest a title for this caz my brain is currently empty :/

Nico walked out of the Hades cabin, bleary-eyed and tired. He felt as if he did not sleep a wink the night before, which was highly possible considering his insomnia. Right now, all he needed was coffee to brace himself for all the energetic, ADHD demigods he would have to endure for the rest of the day. Especially one demigod in particular, who Nico referred to as his ‘significant annoyance’.

How a son of Hades – god of death and darkness (woohoo!) – and a son of Apollo – who was the literal SUN god – had gotten together, Nico did not know. All he knew was that it had happened, meaning that every day when he got up and out of his cabin, he was greeted by the cheery face of Will Solace.

While Nico secretly enjoyed seeing his boyfriend first thing in the morning (although if anyone asked, he would deny the fact), unlike Will, he was not a morning person, so handling the human form of positivity and sunshine needed a lot of energy, something Nico lacked not just in the morning, but throughout the day as well. So, when he had first found out that caffeine existed, he quickly turned into a coffee-addict, something Will had always chided him for.

Just like any other day, Will was waiting for him as he exited his cabin. “Hey babe,” he greeted Nico, smiling as if he were the most beautiful existing creature on the planet. With his messy bedhead and dark circles under his obsidian eyes however, Nico was not feeling very beautiful at the moment. He walked towards Will, who had his hand held out for Nico to hold, which he did, a slight blush gracing his pale cheeks which Will pretended not to see but caused him to grin wider.

“Sleep well?” he asked. “Ughhh coffee…” Nico mumbled in response, rubbing his eye with his free hand. Will chuckled and pulled him closer. “I told you you could sneak into my cabin whenever you wanted. Sleeping with someone you love is actually really good for your health and helps you sleep better.” “One, obviously I can’t sneak into your cabin because there are like, ten other people sharing it with you. And two, I don’t love you, I hate you, so it would actually be very bad for my health to sleep with you.” Nico was actually not lying about it being unhealthy though, as he knew he was as addicted to Will’s cuddles as he was to coffee, if not more. To sleep with him would probably send Nico into cardiac arrest with how much his heart would beat.

Will placed his hand on his chest in mock hurt. “You wound me, di Angelo. Anyway, you must be hungry. Let’s go eat breakfast, alright? You really gotta eat more. And please don’t drink coffee on an empty stomach, the caffeine will kill you one day.” Nico rolled his eyes. “You’ll be all the way over at the Apollo table, you can’t stop me.” “You forgot you have a doctor’s note,” Will smirked. Nico chose to ignore him. They walked in silence towards the dining pavilion for a while, before Will asked, “Why don’t you try drinking tea for a change?” Nico glared at him. “Will, I love you, but please for the love of gods, don’t try and get in the way of my relationship with coffee.” “I thought you were in a relationship with me??” Will pouted. “Nah, you’re just the side-chick. Sorry bud.” “Hey!”

They sat down at the Apollo table, Nico immediately making himself a black coffee. Will wrinkled his nose in disgust. “Why would you drink it black?” “‘Tis as dark as my soul,” Nico said in a dramatic whisper, to which Will rolled his eyes, sipping something out of a boba cup. Nico looked at it curiously. It was so… pink and pastelly. He chucked inwardly; his boyfriend was adorable. “So, what’re you having?” “Hm? Oh this?” Will said, gesturing to his drink. “It’s just a regular milk tea boba. You want?” Nico did want to try it, but he was still working on… what was it Will called? Ah yes, ‘effective communication.’ Plus, he had a reputation to keep. “Hell no, that looks way too… pink.” Will laughed. “That’s just the cup, it’s a cute colour though, isn’t it?” “I know it’s the cup,” Nico hissed. “I don’t want it.” “Well, if you say so,” his boyfriend replied, finishing the boba. “Mm, that was good.”

After breakfast, Will and Nico parted ways to go on about their daily camp routines. When evening arrived, the both of them met up near the lake, something they did everyday to spend time together. Will’s smile doubled when he saw his boyfriend sitting on the grassy bank. “Hey, I brought you something.” It was another boba cup. “Milk tea? I don’t drink the stuff, Will, coffee supremacy.” “Come on, we all know tea is better. And bubble tea is even better. Here, try it. I know you wanted to earlier.” Nico grumbled and pretended like he did not, but he knew Will knew him too well for that. “Whatever,” he said, grabbing the cup and taking a tentative sip. It was… good. Not as strong as coffee, a little sweet but not too much, and very creamy. Nico finished it before he realized. He glared at Will who was smiling back at him knowingly. “So? Did the Lord of Darkness enjoy it?” “Shut up,” Nico said, looking away to hide his pout. He knew he had a bad habit of pouting, something Will called ‘cute’. He really did not deserve Will.

“It was good, thanks,” he blurted, surprising both himself and his boyfriend, who grinned his adorable sunshiny grin and ruffled Nico’s hair before kissing his forehead. “Of course, babe.”

Pairing: Solangelo

Based on the prompt:

Nico Di Angelo was ready to smack his boyfriend. Now, normally, he wasn’t the type to resort to violence-or, well, maybe he was, but that was not the point-but Will Solace had dragged him to the horrid building against his will, insisting that he’d “have fun”.

Well, he was having loads of fun now, sitting in the stuffy mall, legs aching and ice cream melting. He usually liked ice cream, but this one tasted like paraffin wax and sludge. He hadn’t even been aware that ice cream could taste bad before his encounter with this monstrosity. He stood up, threw it in the nearby dustbin, and slumped back into his seat, glaring pointedly at Will. Will simply rolled his eyes, and tugged the hideous blue cap off, finally showed his blonde hair.

“I want to go home,” Nico presumed he looked intimidating, but the way Will’s lip quirked and the way he pinched Nico’s cheek, moving away only when Nico swatted at his hand said otherwise.

“Don’t act like this was torture for you, Mr Dark Lord, I’m the one who had to carry all your hot topic bags,”

Nico blushed slightly, but kept his expression impassive, merely rolling his eyes in reply and slouching in his seat. It wasn’t his fault that the cursed shop had decided t have a sale, and that he’d liked every other piece of clothing.

“Let’s go laser tagging,” Will suggested, getting up abruptly from his seat, and jerking Nico out of his thoughts.

“Let’s go what?” Nico understood if he had annoyed Will by making him carry his bags, but surely, murder was too much. Right?

“Laser tagging? I heard there’s a place here to…” he trailed off, looking horrified at the lost look on Nico’s face. “You’ve-” he began again, slowly this time, as though being confronted by another prophecy, “you’ve never been laser tagging before?”

When Nico shook his head, his expression changed from horrified to confused to pure ecstatic, and he let out a bark of a laugh. He dragged Nico out, bags in one hand and Nico’s arm in the other, and something about the way he was grinning made Nico gulp.

“Where-?” Nico was cut off as Will shushed him impatiently.

“Trust me, you won’t regret it.”

Nico regretted it. The air was cool, thankfully, but that didn’t stop him from sweating a bucket. A song, one that Will had immediately recognized upon walking into the place, had been playing for the past hour and half, slowly driving Nico insane. and Nico’s throat felt like parchment paper. Flashes of blue, red, and purple danced across his vision as he squinted, nearly braining a kid when she tried to sneak up on him.

He was great at this, a natural, Will had said after their second round, and he supposed his reflexes and ADHD helped, too. And although he loved the game, he couldn’t help but get annoyed at the flashy lights and the horrendous music, and Gods could he not wait until he got his hands on Will so he could kiss-no, kick him. He’d kiss him later.

He shot the girl who had tried to shoot him, and was filled with relief. It was only him, Will, and another mystery kid left.

Nico was competitive, and would never let Will purposefully win, but he was also tired and wanted nothing more than to cuddle up on his couch with a certain son of Apollo and watch those ghastly movies Will liked so much with him. Although, despite the fatigue and the annoyance he faced, he couldn’t help but admit that the activity was ridiculously enjoyable, especially since he was bound to win.

Will, although being a son of Apollo, couldn’t shoot a gun to save his life, be it a fake or a real one. Nico, on the other hand, was rather skilled, if he said so himself.

“Holy Hera! Mother of fucks-shit, what the fuck, get away you heathen-Fucknickles-!” The crass vocabulary belonged to none other than Will Solace, and Nico winced. Him being from the 1930s highly affected his definition of proper, and Will Solace almost never filled it.

Moreover, there were kids there, and Will didn’t seem to understand the concept of age-appropriate language. After Chiron had caught a seven-year old girl call her archery partner a “fucking dickhead”, Will had been banned from treating kids under the age of eleven. And when he did, under any emergency, he had been banned from talking in front of them.

He felt relief flood through him, and he sagged against the wall. It was only him and Will left. His eyes burned, and he licked his lips. His mouth was dry.

Nico may have been excellent at using the weapon provided, a weird, fake gun, but Will was obviously better at sneaking around. Maybe that was why Nico hadn’t noticed it when Will had snuck behind him, and by the time he had, Will had already managed to pin both his wrists above his head.

Nico tried struggling, he really did, but when Will leaned in closer, pressing his body against his, Nico’s mind went blank. Will’s breath fanned the shell of his ear when Will whispered, “Got you,” and Nico didn’t have time to put together a meaningful sentence before Will had pressed his lips to his.

The little space Nico had hidden in seemed to have suddenly turned a thousand degrees hotter, but Nico couldn’t seem to bring himself to care. He didn’t care about winning anymore, and even if he did, it was certainly the last thing on his mind.

Will pressed into him harder, and Nico gasped. He had forgotten about the game, and everything else, and all that mattered to him was the boy currently making out with him. He felt his cheeks turn red in embarrassment at being so openly affectionate in public (and certainly not because he was completely and utterly in love with Will Solace, and was blushing because he was flustered), but this wasn’t the 1930s anymore, and Hades, he couldn’t care less about social etiquette while Will Solace was Pressing into him that way.

He pulled away, leaving Nico’s breathing uneven and his heart beating louder than before. One thing Will absolutely adored about Nico was how easily flustered he got. Like now, for example. Nico’s cheeks were burning, and his face was a delectable shade of crimson. He was leaning against the wall, and didn’t move away even when Will let go of his wrists.

Will smirked, shot at Nico, who was far too dumbfounded to react quickly enough, winked playfully at him, and left him behind. “Player is dead, return to base,” A boisterous voice announced, snapping Nico back to reality. He had just lost to Will Solace. Even more, he had just kissed Will Solace in public. He briefly wondered if he’d get thrown out for that. He didn’t care, it wasn’t like he couldn’t bribe Valdez to set up a better replica of the game-he’d forgotten the name-back at camp.

He stumbled out of the area, cheeks still aflame, and scowled at Will in faux annoyance. Will only grinned back, and Nico felt his lips twitch into a slight smile. Although Nico was usually a sore loser, he didn’t mind losing so much this time.

Solangelo Headcanons

I love this ship. I would die for this ship.

1. Will once got Nico a cute little ring that had a sun on it, and he meant mostly as a joke (because everyone knows Nico doesn’t wear bright colors), but Nico loves it and wears it all the time. When they get married, they get one just like it as the ring. It’s the only thing Nico wears that doesn’t match his ‘son of death’ aesthetic, but he doesn’t care.

2. Nico gets back into Mythomagic after the wars, and he tries to get Will into it. (You better believe that Nico has him sworn to secrecy about this, though). Will, on the other hand, is a Star Wars geek who watches and rewatches the movies. 3. @sassy-thalia-grace wrote in her Nico headcanons that Nico wouldn’t tell anyone except Reyna about his Tartarus nightmares, and I think that’s true. But I do think that Will would find out anyway, because when they move in together, I’m sure Nico would wake up screaming. Anyway, Will is super protective of Nico because of that and I’m sure that Will would insist on sleeping next to Nico until his dreams went away. Can someone please make a fan art of these two sleeping together while hugging? On second thought, I might explode seeing that because I get super happy just imagining it.

4. Will is obviously a science nerd, and wants to be a doctor when he grows up. He is a demigod, so he probably has ADHD, which I can tell you from experience, can induce hyper-fixation on stuff that really interests you. Will definitely has read about human anatomy or biology until one in the morning, only to fall asleep on his book. Nico, who obviously doesn’t sleep until 3 am, would find him like that and *try* to carry him to his bed.

5. I’ve seen so many Percabeth posts about Percy having his own cabin but I’d just like to remind everyone that Nico does too.

6. Haha okay I know what the previous one implied but come on it’s Will and Nico, they’re both such innocent little babies, there’s no way they’re going to... uh... you know...

7. Nico is super uncomfortable with physical affection, so I don’t think that when their relationship started with a kiss, like Percabeth’s. I think that their first kiss would have come a bit later, maybe even after ToA because I don’t think they kiss in the books. Both of them were blushing like crazy before and after the kiss. Their kiss was private, with no one watching, and everyone was probably very confused when they both came to a camp activity blushing and stuttering.

8. This is kinda cliche but when they started going to mortal school, everyone would avoid Nico because of his ✨scary aura✨. On the other hand, Will is, like, the star student that all the girls (and a decent portion of the guys) have a crush on. Everyone was very surprised when they realized the two were dating, but all of Will’s friends quickly accepted adopted Nico.

9. They adopt a kid. Enough said.

10. Jk, I really want to talk about their kid. I headcanon that their child would be a girl and if they could name her I think they’d pick Bianca, but that’s up to you. I honestly think that Nico would be a great dad, but because he never had one, he’s always checking with Will to see if he’s parenting right. Will, on the other hand, would be a pretty good dad but I think he would be kind of nervous when it came to punishing/being harsh with his kid. I think Nico would have a good balance of “nicest dad ever” and “of course I listen to my dad he’s the best”.

11. If you think that Nico and Will ever let anything bad happen to their daughter, you’re wrong.

12. Nico can cook complicated Italian really well, but he’ll burn toast or forget to add water to his instant ramen. Will, on the other hand, sucks at cooking but has blueberry muffins to die for. He is also an instant ramen MASTER. (Credits for this one are @dam_geek on instagram)

13. Will has super curly hair that Nico loves to run his fingers through.

14. They both like Taylor Swift (no, I’m not just projecting myself onto them) but Will prefers her country music and Nico prefers her alternative rock.

15. Nico LOVES Sour by Olivia Rodrigo and Will is very concerned at the amount of emotion Nico puts into singing the songs in that album.

16. Nico also loves dogs, because of Mrs. Oleary. Will, on the other hand, is surprisingly scared of them. There was a lot of “chill, babe, it’s just a little puppy, it won’t hurt you” before Nico finally got Will a puppy that was super cute and gentle. The dogs name is Sunny, and Will loves him.

17. Nico sometimes gets flashbacks to Tartarus or just traumatic experiences (cause let’s be honest my guy has plenty) and one grounding exercise he likes to do is holding Will’s hand, or just running his fingers along Will’s. It helps Nico remind himself that he’s not alone, and he’s still in the real world, with Will. So sometimes, when Will and Nico are sitting together, you’ll hear Nico inhale sharply and Will automatically grab his hand to comfort him.

While I agree that fannon solangelo is awful and down right terrible sometimes. Like the fics are bad and show a very toxic relationship and many of the headcanons are problematic, I don't see the Canon ship the way they write it.

Most of these 'anti solangers' use the justification that will was abolish towards nico in boa when he touched him with out consent ( and while I agree you should totally ask first) how exactly was will supposed to know that nico didn't like to be touched. We may have known as he had said it priveously in the book but how was will supposed to know, he may be a healer but he is not I mind reader and we don't know if this is the first time they meet or if they met before ( I personally don't think they met before this interaction, and if they did it was probably in passing) so how would he know?

Eventually in the tower of nero we see nico receiving therapy with Mr D and not from will, so we don't really see this whole doctor/patient relationship that many anti solangelo shippers claim (it is only seen in fannon headcannons- which I don't agree with) the only time we actually see Will being a 'healer' towards Nico is in boa and tower of nero but only because he was physically injured. (We don't know how may children of Apollo there are still alive other than Kayla and Austin so Will is probably the only actual healer left at camp so they don't have much of a choice about who is going to heal the campers including Nico). We only see this whole will is nicos savior in fics people write - and I find this really problematic- the only time I can think of when will was being 'docterly' towards nico was in tower on nero when will gave him the apple and told him to eat it, but he didn't force him to eat it and he did it because you know wouldn't you want the person your dating to eat something.

I've seen many of the anti shippers, ship nico which Jason,Percy, and Leo- all of whom have been more toxic towards Nico than what they say will has.

Jason was the first person to know that nico was gay and they where friends and the first one to accept him, but he has also just grabbed Nico and flew both of them (before the cupid scene) and while he did after he was told by nico he didn't like it and he backed of, he still did it because he didn't know( how would he they never spoke or were together before then)- just like will would not have know as explained above. Plus Jason had a girlfriend and it's totally fine to ship whoever you want together and headcannon anyone's sexuality that's totally up to you don't bash one guy for doing the same thing the guy you like did.

I really dont understand those who ship Leo with nico, the guy literally was creeped out by nico, they never had a conversation together, and he he was totally for( I think it was his idea, if it wasn't sorry I don't remember) leaving nico behind in the jar and not saving him ( which Jason and Percy where for as well), they literally had to have Hazel talk some sense into them to go and save him. They were barely acquaintances at best but you all ship them.

Percy- now we all know nico had a crush on Percy and most of you argue that 'it was too soon for him to get over him and move on'. Nico has been about kinda over him since after the whole cupid thing he said it himself and he said it again in boa at the end . So it was kinda already in the motion and wasn't a "I met this new guy and forgot the old one" he was already almost over him plus I don't personally think it was a crush and it was more of a hero worship/crush thing and that's how he got over it so fast he wasn't actually in love with Percy he saw him more as a hero and his favorite game character literally came to life so he would obviously idolize Percy. That being said Percy has been kinda toxic towards nico in previous books since the labyrinth ,like he found nico creepy and scarry and in the last Olympian literally chocked and tried to strangle nico and was untruthful towards him because he thought nico sold him out to hades and tricked him. Plus he never actually tried to be nicos friend after the titan wars, he just forgot about him.

(There is nothing wrong with shipping whoever you want with whoever, freedom of speech, your entitled to your own opinions im not trying to attack anyone , you do you, sorry if I offended any one with anything I said)

We have not gotten a lot of will content or anything about his character or personality, hopefully we do get some so we can make a more informed analysis opinion on him.

Fannon solangelo is very problematic, I can go into more detail on that some other time, but we don't know much about Wills character or how him and nico started dating or anything about there relationship because we haven't gotten anything about them except a couple descriptions about them from toa, so until we get more information about them we can't really make educated opinions about there relationship and what it's really like.

In the first toa book the hidden oracle, will was all happy and excited to refer nico as his boyfriend, and nico wasn't that excited, yes , but I think that is because they only just started dating. The book takes place in January so the probably only got together mid or late December so that's a lot of time for them to get to know each other and be friends before they started dating. It was all new to nico so he was just starting to get used to people being okay about him being gay and accepting him so sure he was not fully comfortable with being referd to as boyfriend by a guy so soon.

At the moment I can't think of anything else to say it's like nearly 2 am where I am. Maybe I'll write more later when i think of it.

Anti solangelo shippers, please talk to me I (a solangelo shipper) would like to have a mature, non hostile, safe environment discussion with any of you on your opinions on the subject manner. I would to know more of why you don't like the ship or why you think it is problematic and unhealthy.

I won't be rude or bash you on your opinions and I am frankly disgusted by the way the Fandom has been towards all of you and I sincerely apologize to those you have been bullied for your opinions. I don't condone nor agree with there behavior.

Relationship Ask

Starting out strong I see. Well, most of my followers no that I don’t particularly like Solangelo, but I will break this down from the most neutral standpoint I can.

The main factors I look at when I judge relationships I like as a genuine “I ship this as a relationship” and not just “the drama/symbolism/etc. is so fun” are:

1. Physical age (least important)

2. Mental maturity (very important)

3. Emotional maturity (very important)

4. Power imbalance (moderately important)

In some cases Power Imbalances can be the most important factor, but those cases aren’t very common. By real life standards I can only really think of one that is considered a no: doctor/patient relationships.

Now then, to dive in (for this ask I will compare both the actual age of Nico, and the one where Rick changed the age mid series).

Physical Age

Actual Age (13)

Nico is 13 and Will is 15. At a young age physical age is more important. At 13 you have just become a teenager, physically you’re changing a lot, your hormones are all over the place, you’re gonna have some growth spurts. 15 most of that has begun to calm down, you’ve learned how to deal with these changes.

Here there is an imbalance favoring Will.

Changed age (14)

Nico is 14 and Will is 15. Obviously at just 1 year of an age gap it isn’t that bad at all. At 14 you’ve started to figure out this teenager thing, you’re understanding the changes physically more, you’re not great yet but you’ve got things down.

Here there is only a small imbalance favoring Will.

Mental Maturity

Physical age no longer matters.

Nico has been forced to grow mentally an immense amount at this point. He knows how to lead armies, is able to handle big problems, is fiercely independent, and knows how to make tough decisions. He is smart, cunning, and knows how to do whatever it takes to get things done. On the other hand, he is also uninformed on the modern day and in that nature is behind on things.

Will is effectively the head doctor of the camp. He’s helped give birth to a baby. He’s walked into war zones. He’s been the emergency doctor that saved even Annabeth. He fought against the Titan’s.

It’s only slightly in Will’s favor as Nico’s other factors mostly make up for the imbalance in modern knowledge.

They are basically equal in mental maturity.

Emotional Maturity

Nico... oh boy is there a lot to unpack there. This boy has been through trauma. This kid has not been able to process his trauma and emotions for at least 3 years. He is still traumatized from shit that happened a few years ago. He’s barely recovered from Bianca’s death and even that is debatable seeing how he tried to bring her back to life again the moment there was the slightest opening. He’s also been ostracized for being a child of Hades and that’s not easy to deal with either. He is child emotionally and needs serious therapy to process everything that has happened.

Will has some trauma, as anyone that went through the Titan War does, but overall he’s pretty healthy emotionally. Keep in mind I’m judging from what we’ve seen canonically and headcanons on how he may be hurt aren’t being considered here. Others may wish to add them to the equation. He has no mentioned mom info, but seems to have grown up pretty healthily. He’s able to handle stress well and is clearly in a loving family with his siblings. He’s not been ostracized and clearly can’t imagine others feeling that way (points to how he talked to Nico in Book 10).

This heavily leans in Will’s favor.

Power Balance

Whether people acknowledge it or not Will is referenced as Nico’s doctor many times. Doctor’s orders is a common statement Will makes, and it’s used to get Nico out of things and get Nico privileges others do not get. It could likewise be used to take away privileges even if that hasn’t been done.

There is a clear doctor/patient relationship here.

From the AMA (American Medical Association)

A physician must terminate the patient-physician relationship before initiating a dating, romantic, or sexual relationship with a patient. Likewise, sexual or romantic relationships between a physician and a former patient may be unduly influenced by the previous physician-patient relationship.

Doctor/Patient relationships aren’t really acceptable, and are not allowed by the AMA. There is an inherent imbalance, both in having power over the patient, and in judgement being impaired for the patient. So in the case of the power imbalance here...

This leans overwhelming in Will’s favor.

And so now we put it all together!

Actual Age (Nico 13, Will 15)

Physical, Emotional, and Power wise Will holds the power. Mental maturity wise they are equal.

Changed age (Nico 14, Will 15)

Emotional and Power wise Will holds the power. Physical and Mentally they are equal.

So my breakdown concludes with: this relationship holds inherent imbalances that lean heavily in Will’s favor. Other’s may add in headcanons that change the Emotional imbalance, but the power imbalance can only be fixed by making Will stop being Nico’s doctor.

And they called it puppy love

You know the drill: Domestic Solangelo and more specifically Bianca getting a special present for her second birthday.

There were some sounds that could wake Nico up very easily. Including Bianca crying, A monster coming, the sound of the alarm and Will’s pager that rang almost every other night.

Will took the pager in his hands, still half asleep. "I have to go to the hospital, they need me," Will said. It was 3 am and there was an emergency surgery. Nico was trying to fall asleep again, so he just nodded and changed his side. “ I’ll try to be back before Bianca wakes up.”

The next morning, Will had sent him a message to tell him that the surgery would take a lot longer than he expected. Around eleven, the bell rang, and Nico opened the door.

"Hazel, what are you doing here?" Nico said and hugged his little sister.

"I didn’t have anything to do, and I wanted to come and talk to you about something" Hazel answered.

"Haze is everything all right?" Nico was a bit suspicious.

"I will tell you if in your next sentence you won't use the phrases 'hunt him to Tartarus' and 'Gods of Olympus'. Deal?" She smiled.

"Deal" He answered to her.

Bianca ran into the living room as she heard to Nico talking to Hazel. “Auntie Hazel!” Hazel hugged her.

“I missed you so much!” Hazel said.

“I missed you too Auntie!” Bianca said in the most adorable way.

“And you are going to have a little cousin to play with, in a few months” Hazel said, waiting for Nico’s reaction.

“Wait, what?” Nico got confused.

“Yay!” Bianca started jumping up and down.

"You are going to become an uncle. I am pregnant," Hazel said smiling.

"Oh gods Hazel, you are going to have a baby. Congratulations! How far along are you?" He hugged Hazel.

“About 10 weeks. I went yesterday to the doctor” Hazel replied.

“I am happy for you.” Nico said.

“So, do you want to do something?” Hazel said turning to Bianca. “A little missy has her birthday next week.”

“I want to go to McDonalds and to the playground. Can we papa?” She said with her big puppy eyes.

“Sure thing. Let’s go”

The three of them spent almost all day together and around 6 pm they went back home. They found Will sitting on the couch. "Missed me?" Will asked with a stupid smile on his face. Bianca ran to him.

"Aunt Hazel came here and we ate McDonalds, and we went to the playground, and it was so much fun..." Bianca continued talking without catching her breath.

“Do you want a surprise Bee?” Will said getting up.

Bianca was looking impatiently both Will and Nico. They handed her a big box. “Open it baby.”

Bianca opened a box with a beagle puppy in it. Bianca gasped and she took the puppy on her.

Both him and Will had heard Bianca mumbling and asking for a dog ever since she started talking. “How do you want to name him Bee?” Nico asked her.

Bianca was 100% focused on her puppy and nothing else."I am going to show Albus around the house," Bianca said with a smile and she left with the small puppy following every step she took.

“Albus is it then.” Will laughed. “I guess we read too much Harry Potter to her.”

“There isn’t a thing like too much Harry Potter.” Nico half joked. “But there is a thing called watching too much Star Wars.”

“No, there isn’t.” Will defended himself.

“Bianca has watched Star Wars more times than normal people watch them in their entire lives.” Nico said which was obviously Will’s fault as he watched all the Star Wars at least once a month.

“Nico?” Will asked Nico who was watching Bianca playing with Albus.

“Yes?”

“I know it will sound weird, but do you want another baby?” Will looked at him dead serious.

Nico turned to him. “You want more?”

“Yes, do you?”

“I wouldn’t mind having another little one. And Bianca could have a little brother or sister”.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

okay okay so my solangelo fanfic is actually really focused on this!!! so i guess i’ll just restate the main plot of my fanfic here lmao: yes!! i absolutely think they knew each other!!

in my fanfic, i wrote that actually nico and will met when nico first arrived at camp. nico got hurt so he got sent to the infirmary, and will - cute widdle fetus 11yo will, who had just arrived at camp probably just a few weeks ago and was still in a lot of shock - was sent to help nico out. he was really sad, so nico decided to teach him mythomagic, and that’s when their friendship started!!!!

but then nico ended up leaving very soon (im pretty sure it was just a few days) so then they kind of fell out, which will was really sad about because nico was one of his first friends at camp :((

then, after the battle of manhattan, nico and will (who are both about 13 now) meet each other again and nico was so hyperaware of the fact that he and will were friends, so they decided to start trying to be friends again!!

nico stayed for a little longer after the battle of manhattan, and at that time he was dealing with all that internalized homophobia, and will felt really sad becuase he had nico back but also nico seems so reserved :((( not to mention, i think this is also around the time will is questioning his sexuality, and he has the inklings of a crush on nico. will thinks their friendship will last longer this time, but oops!! nico has to leave!! AGAIN!! and will feels so fucking betrayed because all he wanted was to talk to nico again :(

the second time nico leaves, will has an even harder time forgetting about him. it’s not nico’s fault he has to leave, obviously, but will still feels sad. and to be honest, i think since nico had a lot going on at the time, you can’t really blame him for not really thinking too much about will.

and then they meet again in boo. will and nico have a lot of tension between then because they know they were friends before, and nico even feels a little guilty, even though his situation was completely understandable. so they test out the waters and become friends again, and by november/december, my fanfic starts talking about the inklings of feelings that the kiddos feel for each other!!

i think they start dating at like the very end of december/beginning of january. actually, will even admits to nico that he likes him!!! and nico does the same!! they’re underneath the new years fireworks and theyre like “wowowowowowowo this is. these are feelings. he likes me. omFG.” they don’t kiss (because i really like the idea of them being really nervous about kissing and like waiting six months after dating becuase idk i just think its cute) but ahhhHHH!! they’re like in a sort of relationship!!

i think in the hidden oracle, that’s when they’re just at the beginnings of their relationship, which is clearly true becuase nico seems really uncomfortable having will call him “boyfriend.” but i think along the way (probably like march/april) nico is like “will. i kind of want to... make this more official?” and then they become boyfriends by label around that time.

sorry i know this was really long but like this is literally what my origin fanfic is about!! if you’re interested, i’m still writing it!! it goes into even more detail about everything i just said here.

Understanding and acceptance: a short story consisting of things that actually happened

[A/N: I was on the phone with my mum and she told me that I seem to be in a creative mood and that I should write something. I decided to kill two birds with one stone and share a personal story while also writing it as if it’s fiction. So here goes.]

It’s a quiet Saturday evening. My brother Max and I are walking home together, deep in conversation. I have no memory of what the conversation had been about when it started, but I do remember that it somehow got to this:

‘...all this assuming you’re straight, of course, and I’m not assuming anything--’

‘What does being straight mean?’ Max says in a tone that tells me he genuinely doesn’t know. So I feel obligated to explain it in the simplest terms possible. ‘Well, in your case it would mean that you, a boy, like girls.’

‘Well, that’s the normal thing for any person!’ He nearly cuts me off with this. I calculate my next step carefully.

‘Not every person,’ I say, keeping my voice as calm as possible. ‘I’m not straight.’ Of course, he knows that. I came out to my whole family at once three years ago, hoping for the awkward discussions to be over with that. It hasn’t worked out quite as I envisioned it yet.

‘Yeah, but you’re not normal either,’ Max parries. Can’t argue with that. Lucky for me, that is when we reach the front door and each one goes off to mind their own business.

I know very well just how ‘not normal’ I am. Not in that cliche ‘I’m not like other girls’ way, but in a way that causes Bulgarians undereducated on mental health and identity labels (which is unfortunately most people over 30) to brand a person clinically insane, unstable, a threat to the Traditional Bulgarian Family™. Being aroace and having severe social anxiety and ADHD to top it off, I hardly classify as ‘normal’. This is a frequent cause for arguments at the dinner table at home, most of which end in a. tears and/ or a panic attack on my part, b. my father storming off and pretending to be asleep whenever someone goes to call him back to dinner, c. my brother gluing himself to his phone, leaving his plate half-untouched, d. my mother crying over ‘what kind of mother am I that I can’t even have my family together at the table once’, and usually e. all of the above.

For this scenario to play out, however, the whole family of four is required to be present. So fortunately it only happens every other weekend when Dad and I come back home from the capital, where we have been living for the better part of three years now, ever since he got promoted and I started uni. When I’m away from my loving but over-controlling mum and my brother, who seemed to become obnoxious overnight the moment he turned 13 a little over a year ago, I usually have significantly fewer reasons to cry or feel anxious about... you name it. So we do fine. For the most part.

-- this evening --

I am watching Joe and Frankie’s performance of A Whole New World for the thousandth time today when I get a text from Mum.

Mum: How’s my girl doing?

Mum: I haven’t been able to hear from you with all the fuss about your brother.

Max is at that point in his education where he’s applying for high schools. His exam results have just come in and now everyone in the family is stressing about whether his scores will be enough to get him into the school he wants to go to. It’s a big deal, but with all the Rodfini magic going on (and with how terribly behind I am on my internship assignment) I have just been completely unable to care.

Speaking of Rodfini and A Whole New World, I have been repressing the instinctive urge to send my mum the video all day, and when I get her texts, I almost nearly muster up the courage to do it. But between me and her, this is not something you do over text. So I give her a ring instead.

When she picks up, the sound of her voice combined with the anxiety over what I want to tell her makes me tear up and the words are stuck in my throat.

‘Erm-- Mum, can I tell you something?’ I say, still not sure if I’m not about to regret taking up the subject at all.

‘Dear, you know you can tell me anything,’ she says, sounding concerned at my obviously-trying-to-swallow-tears voice.

‘You mean it?’ I ask, listening to her tone to make sure. I wish I could read tones better. ‘Anything?’

‘Is something wrong, honey?’ Oh gods, she’s in a really benevolent mood. I grow more and more afraid of ruining that with my ‘obsession with gays’.

‘Erm, so I guess you should know Dad and I had the tiniest disagreement just now,’ I say, deciding last minute to start with something she might deem ‘more relevant to the family’s personal lives’. ‘You know, we were watching the Euros and then the match ended and we watched the news, and then Dad changed the channel so he could watch the next match. And I was like ‘whoa, what’s with the video quality’, and so dad was like ‘you really need go get your eyes checked out’; and I tried to explain that there was a very obvious difference in quality between the two channels, and he kept yelling at me that I was ruining my eyesight spending all day staring at a screen.’

‘Did he sound annoyed or just concerned?’ Mum asks me.

‘I know what you’re thinking. And I know full well that he’s my parent and he’s concerned about my health. But you should have heard his tone.’

‘So are you two in a fight now?’

‘No. Well, I don’t know.’ I really don’t. It’s hard to tell when one side of the argument refuses to talk about his feelings as if that will kill him. But I don’t tell Mum that. She’s been dealing with Dad since long before I was even planned, so she knows him better than I do. ‘The thing is, he called me back and said that, well, one of the channels was HD and the other was not, so there was indeed a difference, but he thought it was ‘unnatural’ that I was able to register it so immediately, and he kept insisting there was something wrong with my eyes. I should think that seeing something quickly would be a sign of good vision, not bad. Besides,’ I keep talking, nearly desperate to justify myself, ‘I did some research and sensitivity to light is a symptom of ADHD. So it’s nothing new, really.’

I guess there’s some reason to what she says, or at least the last part of it, so I give up on pursuing the subject further. ‘Yeah, anyway,’ I say, ‘I just thought it was all a bit rich coming from the man who refuses to wear his prescription glasses. I haven’t got any prescription glasses, you know.’

I don’t want to come off too cheeky because I still want to try and talk to her about how happy Rodfini have made me today. A while ago, Mum would accuse me of only calling her to complain when I was unhappy, so I have since made it a point to call her when I am happy and tell her so. That’s why I’ve been itching to share this with her. And now the time has come.

‘You know, I’ve been crying in a completely different way today,’ I begin tentatively. ‘A good way, A really, really good way,’ I add quickly before she can get worried again.

‘Yeah? So what was it that made you so happy that you cried?’ Goodness, there’s no turning back now. I decide to proceed with caution.

‘Oh, well, it was this performance, you know. A really beautiful song. So I’ve been wanting to show it to you, but I was worried about how you’d react.’

‘And why would that be?’ she asks in the same kind tone that keeps making me anxious about potentially ruining everything.

‘Well, erm...’ I feel myself start to stutter. ‘See, it’s a love song, and it’s... ok, I’ll just say it. It’s sung by two guys. As in, a couple, you see.’ I keep feeling up the ground with my words, anxious to hear her reaction. It’s like when I’m opening an exam result -- I want to know, but I’m too scared to look. And so now, in my anxious despair to know what she thinks about it, I miss the beginning of her response. ‘And I know how you are about those things, so I...’ I genuinely don’t know what to say. I’ve done my thing again. I’ve kept talking so much that she hasn’t even been able to react audibly. So I trail off, determined to let her speak this time.

‘Ok, but... why do you get so affected by those things?’ Mum says, starting to sound suspiciously like she’s about to question my own orientation again. I feel the need to justify myself for the second time since the conversation has started.

‘Well, it’s just that... I really wish you would just see them, Mum. If you could just see how they look at each other, you’d see that there’s just love. So much love. And joy at being able to express themselves as they are.’

I’m speaking from the heart now. I am finally letting out how much I want her to give them a chance because she deserves to see and hear their magical performance. She must be sensing the anguished sincerity in my voice as I finally manage to stop crying and I smile through the tears, because she says, ‘Dear, are you... are you trying to tell me something there?’

I sigh. She’s asked me this question nearly every time I’ve started speaking ‘too’ passionately about anything LGBTQ+ Which isn’t an awful lot in her presence, but there have been several occasions. Once about Solangelo, at the beach. Once about NPH and his husband David and their children, at the dinner table, as I was trying to explain how same-sex couples can have kids; that one resulted in a seriously bad scene of the type I described earlier. Once about a participant in a reality show who identified as a gay man then, but has recently come out as a trans woman; whenever she’s been mentioned on television, I’ve fought to repress my inner urge to express my happiness for her and the representation she is for the Bulgarian LGBTQ+ community. I wonder even now if my parents have noticed my silence on the subject -- because they certainly do notice when I am not silent.

So now, when the time seems to have come for me to set things straight about my non-straight-ness (bad pun very much intended), I try my best to keep my voice from shaking. ‘I’m not trying to tell you anything I haven’t already told you, Mum. Really.’

‘Are you perhaps attracted to the same gender, dear?’ It seems so unbelievable that she’s said it, and even more that she’s worded like that, but she really has. I force myself to be calm and patient.

‘No, Mum. I’ve told you -- I am not attracted to any gender, be it male, female or anything else, really. You know that.’

‘Well, it sounded as if you--’

‘No, Mum. Really. But I do need you to understand that part of my identity is that I feel the need to support people with other identities different from straight. I’m happy for their successes. I'm concerned about their issues. They’re a sort of family to me. Do you understand that?’ I say, relieved to be speaking my truth at last. At the same time, I try to sound as reasonable and mature about the whole thing as possible. I don’t want to put her off, especially not now that I’m knee-deep in the subject already. I’ve gone too far to turn back now.

‘Yes, honey. Yes, I do. I just don’t want you to exert yourself emotionally, is all. Plus I’ve been so stressed out about your brother and all, you know...’

‘Yeah, I do know. And I know he’ll be fine. He’s a nice boy. I just wished he didn’t keep calling me ‘abnormal’ all the time...’

‘Oh, well, don’t listen to him. He’s been quite stressed out too. And he’s 14. It’s just how he is at this age.’

I’m not too sure about that. ‘Boys will be boys’. It’s ok for boys, then, to pour salt into their neurodivergent sisters’ wounds? I don’t think so. But I can’t fix every problem in one talk. Plus my mum sounds tired now.

So I just say, ‘I guess... Well, anyway, thank you so much, Mum. For hearing me out, and for supporting me, and for everything else. Please don’t worry so much.’

But I know she can’t not worry at all. I’ve got that from her.

‘If you’re sure you’re all ok now, dear...’

‘Yeah, mum, I am. Or I will be. You know, there’s this expression with English, ‘to run with something’. So I’ve been telling myself, I’ll at least try to walk with things. You know I’m not much of a runner anyway.’ I actually laugh, even though the pun is quite untranslatable into Bulgarian.

‘You know I’m proud of you, right?’

I know that has very little to do with the kind of pride I’ve been celebrating all month, but I say, ‘Of course I do. And you know what? I’m quite proud of myself, too.’ I can’t believe I’m saying it, but I mean it. I mean it wholeheartedly this time.

‘I’m nearly falling asleep, though, dear, so I say we call it a night?’

‘Good night, Mummy. And thanks.’

I hang up. Then I forward the video to her.

I’ve come so far, indeed. I reckon we both have.
