I have decided to create a challenge for Pride Month.
Let’s all reflect on the things that have shaped and affected us as LGBTQ+ individuals. I challenge you to answer this question: What’s an LGBTQ+ (theme/symbolism/mentions of LGBTQ+ anything!) song, movie, piece of art, book, poem, quote, ANYTHING, that you like? Why do you like it? Feel free to share it all in your response to this post!  Even YouTube vids, spotify links, whatever! Anything that shows us your fave stuff regarding LGBTQ+. I’ll go first.
POETRY:
A poem by my favorite poet Walt Whitman: “Though biographers continue to debate Whitman's sexuality, he is usually described as either homosexual or bisexual in his feelings and attractions.” (reference: https://bookshop.org/books/poems-9781519702807/9781519702807)
Song of the Open Road:
Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me, leading wherever I choose. Henceforth I ask not good-fortune—I am good- fortune, Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing, Strong and content, I travel the open road. The earth—that is sufficient, I do not want the constellations any nearer, I know they are very well where they are, I know they suffice for those who belong to them. Still here I carry my old delicious burdens, I carry them, men and women—I carry them with me wherever I go, I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them, I am filled with them, and I will fill them in return. You road I travel and look around! I believe you are not all that is here, I believe that much unseen is also here.
A large part of my sexuality and my freedom to express my sexuality healthily is thanks to Walt Whitman. Not only did he save my life once, he helped me understand myself.
ART:
As for art. Frida Kahlo was a great inspiration for me in terms of female sexuality, loving both men and women, and thinking of sexuality as more than sex and attraction. I also have a strong desire to become a mother one day, as she did. I am also terrified of infertility, as she was.
“While many maintain she had sexual relationships with both men and women, what is true is that she considered sexuality as something that went beyond mere intercourse. It spoke of creation, life, and, of course, her wish to conceive and become a mother. This obsession was a constant in her life and was beautifully immortalized in the bright shapes and colors of her canvases.” (reference: https://culturacolectiva.com/art/frida-kahlo-sexuality-paintings)
TW: Blood, nudity, infertility, hospital bed, childbirth
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MOVIE:
Tumblr media
TW for the movie: sex scenes, some sexuality, use of the n word, drug use, brief violence, and language throughout.
I very much enjoyed the movie Moonlight. Not only was it filmed where I live, I also went to a showing for it near the place it was filmed. When it came out, I was overjoyed, and loved the themes it showed in the movie. The element of water has always been a recurring one in my own life. Moonlight handles difficult topics, such as incarceration, death, prejudice, racism, homosexuality, toxic masculinity, growing up in poverty, familial relationships, homophobia, AIDS, father-son relationships and dynamics, black culture, how black gay men are viewed, love and relationships, separations, machismo, anxiety, etc. in a beautiful, graceful manner. The main characters father is from Cuba, and speaks of black people and black culture in cuba. This is something that isn't spoken of as much as it should be. The afro-cuban culture in cuba is important, and a part of Cuban people's history and ancestry. As a Cuban woman, I was proud to hear about the experience the father shared, not necessarily because of the experience itself, but because people will hear it and learn. Things must change. Many of these themes are things I struggled with in my own life. I felt a sort of kinship with the movie and its characters.
Have some clips of the film:

MUSIC:
Tumblr media
I think I heard this song when I was around eleven years old.  I think so many people know it already, it's very popular, but it was the first song I heard that really expressed feeling love for someone of the same sex. When I tried explaining to my mother how I felt inside, in terms of my sexuality and attraction to the members of the same sex, I showed her the youtube video of the song. It was a very interesting experience lol. Some lyrics I felt I related to were:
"Mother looking at me Tell me what do you see? Yes, I've lost my mind Daddy looking at me Will I ever be free? Have I crossed the line?"
And
"And I'm all mixed up, feeling cornered and rushed They say it's my fault, but I want her so much Want to fly her away,"

QUOTE/BOOK
Tumblr media
A quote that recently touched my heart was:
“In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk. Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun.” from The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
When I read this, I thought, “This is what matters when you are with the one you love. This is all that should matter.”
Have a summary of the book from Goodreads.com (one of my favorite websites for organizing my books. If you want to follow me there, send me a message or ask and I’ll give it to you):
“Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. By all rights their paths should never cross, but Achilles takes the shamed prince as his friend, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine their bond blossoms into something deeper - despite the displeasure of Achilles' mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But then word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus journeys with Achilles to Troy, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart.”
And that’s it for me! I challenge ALL OF YOU to continue this and share your own. Feel free to reblog this and tag your own friends and mutuals to complete this challenge! Let’s share with each other the beautiful pieces of work that have inspired us as members of the LGBTQ+ community.

After The Facts - Stargirl Season 2
The second season of DC’s hit show Stargirl was a wild ride, what with the evil Eclipso striking at the new JSA in ways that most villains could never even dream of. The conclusion had the demon of darkness fall to the light but reaching that point left us with more than a few questions.
10) How will Beth’s parents help?
Tumblr media
Beth’s character arc this season focused on her coping with her parents divorce. Given how much her parents focused on her growing up and the issues she already had with them wanting to focus more on themselves in the first season, this was an especially bitter pill to swallow for her. Eclipso’s actions and discovering Beth is a superhero caused them to rethink divorce and they proved excited at the idea of helping their daughter improve as a hero. How exactly their renewed focus on Beth will shake out is worth pondering, not only for the tools it could give the new Doctor Mid-Nite but for how they’ll fit in with the dynamics of JSA now that they do know. The couple are seen to be go big or go home in terms of personality which could be either good or bad for their daughter and her teammates.
9) How are the Crocks not back in jail?
Tumblr media
The final moments of the finale showed that the Crock family had moved in next door to the Whitmores, a surprising development given that the parents had been jailed after last season’s finale and their daughter fled Blue Valley when Eclipso arrived. While Artemis broke her parents out to help against the demon its not clear how they stayed free after. It’s doubtful that were given a pardon for the act, given how secretive the current JSA and that particular battle were. Cindy calling them hints that the she may have had a hand in that turnout, possibly taking advantage of the old ISA’s connections to get some strings pulled. But if that were the case why wouldn’t the Crock parents make a call themselves. And for that matter who sold a house to proven supervillains?
8) Will Grundy be the same?
Tumblr media
Rick’s journey in season two was centered around his surprising friendship with the undead Solomon Grundy. Grundy was the one who killed Rick’s parents but Rick saw that the creature was ultimately little more than an attack dog following orders, allowing him to forgive Grundy and begin a friendship. This led to Grundy joining the fight against Eclipso and unfortunately dying at the monster’s hands. The Shade noted that Grundy had a habit of returning from death but if he does will he still be the same? Resurrection is a staple of comics Grundy but he also tends to return with changes to his personality every time. Some times an unintelligent but innocent animal, others a malicious and scheming figure; if this trend holds up then the version of Grundy that returns may not be the friend that Rick lost.
7) Are the Crock’s heroes now?
Tumblr media
More confusing than how the Crocks aren’t still in jail is if they’ve turned over a new leaf or not. Crusher honestly sees Pat as a friend despite their differing moralities and Paula somewhat bonded with Barbara over their difficult daughters. Artemis meanwhile was largely angry over her parents incarceration so their return may help temper her worse impulses. It does seem like they have little interest in grudges against the JSA and given how villainy turned out for them they may decide a less malicious path might be better for all of them. The third season will be called Frenemies after all and some reformed villains may just give the heroes an edge against Mr. Bones.
6) Can Shiv be a hero?
Tumblr media
Cindy has been characterized as a gleeful psychopath throughout the show so it was surprising to hear she wanted to join up with the JSA in the finale’s closing moments. On one hand it is definitely suspicious for her and may well just be another plot against Courtney. On the other it’s been made very clear that she’s deeply unhappy in the life of a supervillain so she may be rethinking her life choices. Of course there’s also the question of whether or not she can leave behind the viciousness that she believes has allowed her to survive in order to become a proper hero. Whatever the reason, Cindy is chasing a new and unexpected path and it will be a joy to see how it unfolds.
5) More than a passing resemblance?
Tumblr media
The Shade was a mysterious figure from the start and one of the most surprising aspects of his character was his bond with Barbara Whitmore. It was brought up several times how much Courtney’s mother reminded him of his sister Emily and we can’t help but wonder if there’s more than sentiment behind that. The show has a strong focus on family and bloodlines and given how much a resemblance was brought up by Shade it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that Barbara and Courtney could in fact be descendants of the Shade’s sister, making him family as well. It would prove to be quite a turn for the heroics obsessed Courtney to be related to a supervillain and for the normalcy seeking Barbara to find that she may have been connected to the world of superheroes more than she ever thought.
4) A clash between Pat and Sylvester?
Tumblr media
Pat’s dynamic with the Justice Society was an interesting one to be certain. While he was friends with them the team wasn’t above treating him as a sidekick first and forcing him into situations he disagreed with them on, especially Starman. While Pat hasn’t shown any resentment in the present day that may well change with Sylvester’s mysterious return. The former Starman has already jokingly dismissed the values Pat wants to instill in Courtney and given what’s been seen of their dynamic in the past Pat may well find his patience with his friend expiring. And none of that’s even getting into whether or nor Courtney, who idolizes the JSA but has also come to see their faults, will side with Pat or Sylvester in such a clash which could only worsen things.
3) Mr. Bones - Villain or Misguided?
Tumblr media
The Green Lantern’s daugher, Jennie, appeared early in the season, searching for her missing brother Todd. It quickly became clear that something sinister was going on in regards to Todd and that thing wound up being Mr. Bones, who took an interest in the happenings of Blue Valley at the end of the season. While Bones is certainly being presented as a villain it’s difficult to say if things are quite that clear cut. In the comics the character did start as a villain but did a turn around to become someone who strives to do what’s right for the world, albeit in uncompromising and amoral ways at times. It’s unclear if he’ll be a clear cut villain when he arrives or if he’s chasing noble goals and going about it in a not so ideal way.
2) What is Cameron’s destiny?
Tumblr media
With the death of his father, the Icicle, Cameron was left in his grandparents care. Not only that but it turned out that his father’s ice powers were hereditary and that his grandparents had them as well. Cameron began to develop these powers and his grandparents decided it was time to tell him some hidden truths. What’s unknown about this development is whether or not they will push him on the same path as his father. They were ardent supporters of Jordan’s villainy but also looked like they were trying to do right by Cameron, driving away Cindy and allowing him to pursue a romance with Courtney despite their own dislike of the girl. Time will tell what they reveal to their grandson or even if what they say will be the entire truth or a carefully crafted lie to twist him into being who they think he should be.
1) An Arrowverse arrival?
Tumblr media
One of the biggest additions to the show this season was Jay Garrick, the first Flash. Even more surprising is that he was played by John Wesley Shipp, who plays the character on The Flash show. This opened the doors to speculation about whether or not this was the exact same character as the one on The Flash or not. An answer wasn’t made clear in the one episode featuring him but that just made the fans all the more curious. The writers confirmed his appearance was meant to open the door to further connections with the wider Arrowverse so it’s not beyond the realm of reason that this will continue in season three. While it’s doubtful that Courtney and the rest of the JSA will meet the heroes of Earth-Prime next season the door is slowly opening for the multiverse to return to the Arrow shows and Stargirl is the most obvious first stop for that train.

M*A*S*H: The Characters Part 4: B.J. Hunnicutt, Sherman Potter, Charles Emmerson Winchester III and Conclusion
Of all of the cast shake-ups throughout M*A*S*H’s run, none were more impactful on Hawkeye Pierce than the departure of Trapper McIntyre.
The original ‘sidekick’ and best friend archetype, Trapper’s absence at the 4077th immediately took its toll on Hawkeye, who came back from R&R to find that his best friend had left without a note.  For both the audience and Hawkeye, however, there wasn’t much of a wait before his absence was filled with a newcomer: Captain B.J. Hunnicutt (Mike Farrell).
Tumblr media
A surgeon hailing from San Francisco, California, B.J. was a newcomer, fresh out of med-school and completely unused to the horrors of front-line surgery.  Introduced at the start of the new season, (meeting Hawkeye in the middle of his frantic attempt to say goodbye to Trapper) it became instantly clear that he was no ‘replacement’, but instead almost an opposite, a foil to the previous character’s archetype and to Hawkeye himself.
Where Trapper was a womanizer, B.J. was a loving, devoted husband and family man, a Nice Guy who started the show out as a tad naive, gentle, and idealistic.  He was a prankster, sure, but he was more likely to take a stand and argue with Hawkeye than Trapper had been, possessing a temper that, once roused, could be dangerous (leading to at least one physical altercation with Hawkeye).  At the beginning, the ways of war are a sudden jolt to him, one that he doesn’t necessarily take well.  As with every character, as time goes on, B.J. began to change as a result of the war, growing a mustache in a distinct ‘anti military’ move, and becoming more jaded, slowly evolving into the cynic between himself and Hawkeye.
Tumblr media
B.J. was a good man at heart, as concerned for his patients as Hawkeye, but without the level of external breakdown that Hawkeye tended to go into.  More of a Tranquil Fury type, B.J. managed to keep a reasonably cool head, (most of the time) and acted as a Morality Chain, a voice of reason where Trapper was an encourager.  He was a more mature character, a husband and father increasingly feeling the wear and tear of being forced miles away from his family without any way to see his daughter grow up.  He also possessed a nasty jealous streak, seen often when Hawkeye mentioned how much Trapper had meant to him.
Despite their differences, B.J. and Hawkeye became very close friends throughout the show’s run, constantly having each other’s backs and being each other’s coping mechanisms through the horrors of war.  As surely as the others, B.J. became part of the 4077th’s family, and as a result, his character required the same amount of closure that the characters that had been there from the beginning deserved.
Tumblr media
At the end of the show, B.J., like the others, gets to go home, and we as an audience learn that B.J. really doesn’t like saying goodbye.
After dancing around it through an entire episode, B.J. leaves a final farewell message to Hawkeye, (and the audience) in a heartfelt display of affection to his best friend, the man who made Korea bearable for him.  In the end, in a fitting display of the entire basis of his character, B.J. does what Trapper never did: he left Hawkeye a note.
But he wasn’t the only newcomer to make an impression.
Following Henry Blake’s death, the 4077th was in desperate need of a commanding officer (someone to relieve Frank Burns from his tyrannical reign), and replacement came in the form of Sherman Tecumseh Potter.
Tumblr media
In much the same vein as B.J. was the complete opposite of Trapper McIntyre, Colonel Potter was very much the Anti-Blake, in the best way possible.  A career army-man, Potter was both a dedicated surgeon and a dedicated army man, on his third war.  Hailing from Hannibal, Missouri, Potter was just the man to shape the 4077th into some semblance of order, following Henry’s bumbling chaos.
Although still a Reasonable Authority Figure with a sense of humor, Potter was no pushover, standing his ground against Hawkeye and B.J.’s schemes and Frank Burns’ wheedling.  A Father to His Men (and an actual grandfather – Potter was another family man, a direct contrast with Henry’s cheating), Potter settled in instantly, a Cool Old Guy with a love of westerns and horses who could be empathetic and caring for his unit in their moments of weakness, and also make sure that Klinger didn’t get away with this week’s Scheme.
Tumblr media
Potter was probably one of the characters who developed the least as the show went on, most likely due to his already settled personality as an ‘Old Soldier’, but by no means did he leave Korea unchanged.  As the show went on, Potter had moments of hidden depths, notably in terms with hearing the news that the last of his old squadron had died.  Potter often grappled with his age, sometimes causing him to feel competitive with his surgical abilities, attempting to prove that he could keep up with the younger doctors.  Like the others, despite his age and experience, Potter was very human, afraid of making mistakes, and, after three wars, was thoroughly tired of the killing.
“They keep inventing new ways to kill each other. Why can’t they invent a way to end this stupid war?”
Tumblr media
After the war ended, Potter, too, got to go home to his wife, Mildred, saying goodbye to his newfound family, and receiving a genuine salute from both B.J. and Hawkeye, becoming one of two characters Hawkeye ever saluted (the other being Radar).  In the end, Potter had his unit’s affection and respect, and left Korea with dignity.
“Well, boys – it would be hard to call what we’ve been through fun, but I’m sure glad we went through it together.”
Despite beginning the show as a potential ‘replacement’ for Henry Blake, he ended it, much as B.J. did for Trapper: as an entirely new character in his own right, who changed the dynamic of the unit in general, bringing a wholly unique style to his command, and the show in general.
Tumblr media
But there was one other character who had yet to appear on the show: another ‘replacement’ character who quickly proved that he was no simple replacement.
Exit Frank Burns, replaced with Major Charles Emerson Winchester III (David Ogden Stiers).
Tumblr media
Charles Winchester, originally from Boston and then stationed in Tokyo, was a thoracic surgeon and pediatrician, and very good at it.  Born into a wealthy family (Very Blue Blood) and schooled at Harvard, Charles was an asset to the 4077th once he was assigned there, (after trouncing a commanding officer at cards and boasting about it) despite multiple pleas to the unmoved Colonel Potter to be reassigned.
“But, know this: You can cut me off from the civilized world, you can incarcerate me with two moronic cellmates, you can torture me with your thrice-daily swill, but you cannot break the spirit of a Winchester. My voice shall be heard from this wilderness, and I shall be delivered from this fetid and festering sewer.”
Tumblr media
As with Potter and B.J. before him, Charles proved very quickly to not simply be ‘the new Frank Burns’, displaying instead a completely separate and different series of personality traits, not the least of which was competence.
While Frank’s less than stellar abilities as a surgeon were repeatedly the butt of many jokes (and a source of superiority for Hawkeye, Trapper, and B.J.), Charles was legitimately excellent as his job, his only difficulty being adjusting to the pace and style of ‘meatball’ surgery when not able to utilize the time and equipment available in high-end hospitals.  But there was more to Charles than simply being good at his job.
Tumblr media
Charles joined the cast to fill in as an antagonistic character, a role vacated by Margaret several seasons ago, and a part left entirely empty thanks to the departure of Frank Burns.  However, while Burns tended to be ineffectual, more of a nuisance than a problem, a consistently ‘inferior’ character who was always obviously wrong, Charles typically had more weight and reason to his actions.  While consistently butting heads with Hawkeye and B.J., Charles’s snobbery and selfishness could be treated as a joke, yes, and his character overall as ‘worse’ than the other two Swamp inhabitants, but at the end of the day, Charles was simply more human than Frank, and thus, a lot harder to hate.
Despite multiple attempts to ‘Break the Haughty’, Charles remained steadfast and stubborn through his time in the war, a Gentleman Snarker who slowly revealed a Jerk with a Heart of Gold type of personality.  He had a great sense of Family Honor, and despite his Insufferable Genius tendencies, proved that he had Hidden Depths, (and a potential history of a Lonely Childhood and Parental Neglect) which occasionally showed to prove to the audience, and the rest of the 4077th, that Charles was no Frank Burns.  Indeed, despite never losing his position as a ‘foil’ to the 4077th cast, Charles remained a proud, but good man from the moment he arrived until the moment he left, another symptom of a show who had matured past the need for cartoonish sit-com villains.
Tumblr media
Despite the fact that Hawkeye never succeeded in breaking the ‘Winchester spirit’, Charles did leave Korea a changed man.  Besides learning to operate in horrendous conditions, at a pace designed merely to keep people alive and not much else, Charles took one final blow in the M*A*S*H finale: “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen” that spoke to both his character, and the toll that war takes in general.
Throughout the show, it was made abundantly clear that Charles adored classical music, viewing it as a haven away from the war, allowing him to forget about it for a little while.  His love for music enabled him to connect with a group of Chinese prisoners of war, who know some Mozart.  Throughout the episode, Charles teaches them some more, bonding with them until a prisoner exchange sends them away.
Tumblr media
Later, the POWs are killed en route to the exchange.  As they’re brought back to the 4077th, only one is still alive, and he dies before Charles even has a chance to operate.  This devastates him utterly, to the point where he destroys his own record of the song he’d been trying to teach them.
“For me, music has always been a refuge from this miserable experience… now it will always be a reminder.”
In the end, Charles gets to go home, and in a sign of how far he’s come, he leaves the 4077th on the last remaining vehicle, a garbage truck, with utmost dignity, remarking that it’s only fitting.  Charles leaves his 4077th family, and the audience, in a somewhat surprising turn of events, misses him, is sorry to see him go in a way that we were never sorry for the absence of Frank Burns.
There were other characters, sure: the paranoid Colonel Flagg, the kitchen and mess hall staffer Igor, Klinger’s mortal enemy, Zelmo Zale, Ascended Extra fan favorite nurse Lieutenant Kelleye, and sympathetic psychiatrist Sidney Freedman, or Margaret’s less than stellar husband, Donald Penobscott.  This was more evidence for the care and realistic development that the M*A*S*H world was given: a variety of people filling in alongside the main cast, making a comfortable family that over eleven years, viewers got to know very well.
Tumblr media
In the history of television, very few casts have had the lasting impact on viewers the way the M*A*S*H cast did.  At the end of eleven years, the audience was owed that finale, a way to say goodbye in a fulfilling way to characters that had become very familiar, important, almost real to viewers who had been tuning in to see them grow and change for over a decade.
The cast of M*A*S*H each served a place in the stories, with unique characters with depth and personality that transcended the flat character types typical of sitcoms just a tad previously.  The audience knew these people.  They liked these people.  Every character feels real, genuine, and memorable, and their dynamics are nearly as memorable as the characters themselves.
Tumblr media
Throughout the show, you watched these characters grow and change, finding new ways to approach situations, as viewers got familiar with the core traits of their individual personalities.  They work very well as characters, as people, both entertaining and compelling figures for the audience to want to spend time with every week.  They felt real, like people you could know in real life.
And it worked.
Tumblr media
M*A*S*H’s characters are still loved to this day, for being both entertaining and stellar examples of what happens when television characters are written like real people, with flaws and growth and kindness in varying doses.
In the end, it is that humanity in each character that gives M*A*S*H it’s longevity, and what places these characters as some of the most iconic and beloved in American television history.
Thank you guys so much for reading!  Join us next time as we discuss M*A*S*H’s place in the times and the culture.  If you have anything you’d like to say, don’t forget to leave a comment!  I hope to see you all in the next article.

Girls Behind The Rock Show x Feminin Ror International Transgender Visibility Day
Tumblr media
Written by April Bredael.
At Girls Behind The Rock Show and Feminin Ror, we value and support individuals of all identities. We value diversity, inclusion, and support for people being their authentic selves. Today, March 31st is International Transgender Visibility Day. On this day we honor the progress our society has made, yet acknowledge the abundance of work that still needs to be done.
International Transgender Visibility Day celebrates transgender identities and raising awareness and education about discrimination faced by transgender individuals every day, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society.
Trans representation in the music industry is something we strive to recognize. Regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, music is something that brings individuals together. Recognizing and celebrating our differences is what makes our industry stronger, and creates a more diverse and remarkable environment within the industry. Today, we will acknowledge our favorite transgender artists and their contributions to the music industry as well as providing resources in support of the LGBTQ+ community.
Tumblr media
Cavetown, who has created success within music has been performing since 2013. At age 14, he broke barriers with his whole-hearted optimism and yearning for life that was encapsulated within his music and a success with his fans. In 2018, he released his debut full length album, Lemon Boy which saw immediate success. After pursuing multiple sold out national and international tours, he has created an authentic bond with fans who gather as a community around his music and vision.
For more on Cavetown, visit his website here.
Tumblr media
Kim Petras, who has been creating music since she was a teenager, has quickly taken the world by storm. The German artist found success with her single “Heart to Break” breaking into Top 40 radio. Petras has been a longtime advocate for transgender rights and states that “I’m super proud of being transgender, and I love the rest of the community,” she says. “The suicide rate is so ridiculously high, and it’s so difficult when you don’t have supportive parents. I want to be a good example.”
For more on Kim Petras, visit her website here.
Tumblr media
SOPHIE, an influential Scottish producer, changed the music industry forever with her impact in only thirty four short years. In addition to SOPHIE’s work in the music production industry, SOPHIE was a long time advocate for trans rights. "Trans-ness is taking control to bring your body more in line with your soul and spirit so the two aren't fighting against each other and struggling to survive," SOPHIE shared. "On this earth, it's that you can get closer to how you feel your true essence is without the societal pressures of having to fulfill certain traditional roles based on gender." SOPHIE’s pioneered production visions and immense work for inclusion within the music industry changed the music scene forever and paved the way for future queer individuals pursuing music.
You can visits SOPHIE’s website here.
Tumblr media
Shea Diamond, who specializes in soul and R&B has had a different break into the music industry from many others. As a trans woman of color, Diamond has faced adversity throughout her entire life. While incarcerated for an attempted bank robbery to pay for gender reassignment surgery, she wrote her hit track “I Am Her.” While in prison, Diamond experienced humiliation, isolation, and misgendering as punishments. She shares that "To be a 40-year-old woman, a trans woman, to make it to that age it's not really heard of. We get killed off before we're 25,” and that “People don't want to see the struggle of what it takes for a trans woman to survive. It's more comfortable for people — for everybody now — for entertainment purposes to see a drag queen. That's a person who can take it off. The trans experience is a person who isn't doing it for entertainment purposes. Everything this person does is for survival. What does survival look like? It looks like [me]." Because of her experiences, Diamond is a huge advocate for transgender rights and continues the fight for equality.

Lucas Silveira, of The Cliks, broke barriers as the first transgender man to sign with a major record label. He shares that “Something that I would like to do is to bring some aspect of normalcy to people like me," Silveira stated, "We're a very, very diverse community — I've never met two transgender people who've had the same experience." Since coming out, The Cliks have released several popular tracks including “Complicated,” “Dirty King,” and “Oh Yeah.”
For more on Lucas Silveira and The Clicks, visit their website here.
While acknowledging the success of the above individuals and more, we must continue to spark advocacy for change and inclusion in the fight for equality. Although dedicated as a day of visibility for the transgender community on March 31st, it is important to continue spreading visibility every day.
A playlist of transgender artists can be found here.

systems of racism in america
Tumblr media
Over the last 244 years, the only consistent thing about America is our inability to change our society for the better. Despite the myriad of amendments and legislation, in 2020, we are still exactly where we started, just under a different and more politically correct name. The lynching of Black bodies hasn’t stopped. The brutalization and exploitation hasn’t stopped. The only thing we are innovative in is our modernization of slavery under the guise of public safety and this is because the preservation of America is contingent on the continuation of the oppression that Black people across numerous generations are familiar with. Not only are Black Americans living with generational trauma, but they are still forced to live the same realities as their ancestors, just through a different lens. These trends are no coincidence, and are simply a byproduct of the racism and anti-Blackness that is rooted in the intentions and ideals of the slave owners who created this country.
The thing about systemic racism is that it has a propensity of cropping up in the least expected areas, even places where power dynamics are supposedly deconstructed to advocate for the equality of marginalized groups *cough* *cough* feminism *cough* *cough*. It’s a result of a centuries long effort to condition Americans to subconsciously think of others, and possibly themselves, as inferior. Since it’s so normalized, we cannot fathom a reality where our thought process isn’t directed in such a way making it difficult for people, even Black people themselves, to look into the way our society operates from a 3rd person point of view and realize how saturated American culture is saturated with racism.
How dense the topic of systemic racism itself should be enough to indicate to you how pervasive it is, and more importantly, how important it is to actively seek ways to dismantle any internalized racism you may have learned.
We are currently reliving a reality that America has just seen in 2015, in 2014, in 1992, in 1968, in 1831, all rooted from a same place of exhaustion and frustration of being forced to live a reality that is inferior and less than to others by virtue of the color of their skin. This pent up anger and frustration against those in places of power is nothing new, and the way we’ve reacted to them is not new either as history tells us, yet America has been unable to take this into account and consider that, perhaps, the meaningless lip service and futile legislation that has passed over the years have done little to nothing to liberate Black Americans.
I saw something on Twitter the other day that was discussing how the things that we get from politicians like the civil rights act for example, are only given because it doesn’t threaten their power or privilege. If it was in the interest of politicians to actually give minorities the equal rights they deserve, America wouldn’t exist as we know it. Over the years, the so-called progress that we have made were the result of desire to satiate citizens and satisfy them with a piece of legislation that ultimately wouldn’t change anything about their standards of living. For every step of progress we made, politicians were able to slip their agenda in there to not make it too easy for Black Americans. Though the passage of the Civil Rights Act was a milestone for racial equality, redlining and other unfair housing policies that still existed made it difficult for Black Americans to use the boost that the Act gave them to create a better life for themselves.
What this tells us is that America’s race relations aren’t reformable. As long as America exists in its current form, Black liberation will never be, which is an important realization to have to understand where to go next and where to target your advocacy.
The two most notorious systems in America that are a direct result of systemic racism exists in our criminal justice system: the police and prisons. Throughout the Antebellum Era, Black Americans, especially Black men, were vilified and sexualized by white Americans to paint them as criminals who would stop at nothing to violate Southern Belles. This set a precedent for what would ultimately become the basis for the mass incarceration crisis we have today as well as the practices that police use for Black Americans. After slavery was abolished through the 13th Amendment, the clause that says “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” became a loophole that southerners heavily exploited, and all of America exploits to this day. The criminalization of Black Americans aided in the normalization of incarcerating Black Americans, even for the slightest infraction. The presumption of innocence until proven guilty has never applied to Black people for this reason because our society viewed them as criminal by their very nature, and over time, along with other various racist initiatives, America has managed to create a legalized institution of slavery. Prisoners, 34% of whom are Black, are forced to do labor at no pay, and privatized prisons, which are an especially heinous form of prisons, allow shareholders the ability to profit off of prisons and prison labor, thus profiting off of Black Americans which sounds exactly like slavery to me.
The people assisting the highest rate of incarceration are the police which were initially known as slave patrols. They would catch runaway enslaved people who would often end up being brutalized and even killed by them in similar fashions to the way Black Americans continue to be murdered today. The history of the police is rooted in the perpetuation of racism and white supremacy which is why it comes to no surprise that their practices heavily promote racial profiling and unnecessary methods of violence and aggression to create peace in our neighborhoods. Today, the police have proven to exist solely to police majority Black and Brown communities, protect property, and incite violence. The police that operate in inner city neighborhoods as opposed to suburban police are two completely different methods of policing that prove that through the investment in community building and organizing, the job of the police becomes useless. It further highlights the stark contrast between the lives of white America and Black America and shows that if we really wanted to, that reality can be expended to all Americans (granted, there’s a lot of things wrong with suburbia too but you know what I mean).
America as a whole is archaic. It’s rooted in a mindset that promotes white supremacy and racism and if we want it to change or be better, we have to reinvent what we want America to mean for us as opposed to what we were forced to believe about it. We have to address the ugly side of it, because if we’re being honest, 95% of it is ugly anyways, in order to create a sustainable society for all.

By Anis Shivani, whose recent political books include Why Did Trump Win?, Confronting American Fascism, and A Radical Human Rights Solution to the Immigration Problem. He is the author of many critically-acclaimed books of fiction, poetry, and criticism, including, most recently, A History of the Cat in Nine Chapters or Less
Forcing the March 17 primaries in Florida, Arizona and Illinois to go forward, despite reports of exceedingly low turnout throughout the day (which miraculously and quite expectedly turned into higher turnouts than 2016 in both Florida and Arizona by the time the final reporting came in), was the last straw. This farce occurred despite the Ohio governor postponing their primary on the same day. This slap in the face of voters was then compounded by the even worse parody of the April 7 Wisconsin primary being allowed to go ahead at the peak of the pandemic, with polling stations vastly reduced (from 180 to just 5 in Milwaukee alone) and absentee ballots often not received or recorded, while maintaining the pretense that somehow all of this constituted a legitimate election.
In the middle of the pandemic, with the entire nation considering a de facto lockdown and many communities already there, the DNC was hell-bent on driving the final nail in the coffin of the youth movement, even though the Sanders campaign had suspended GOTV efforts, for obvious reasons, and even if Biden never really had a presence in any of the latest round of states.
In Maricopa County, Arizona, where many polling stations were shut down, in-person turnout was reportedly higher by 10,000 people than in 2016! And that’s just one representative example from the March 17 primary states. Furthermore, the DNC threatened the remaining primary states against postponing their elections for health reasons, preempting moves similar to those made by Louisiana, Georgia and others. The stage is being set for a virtual convention, followed by the possible resurgence of the illness in the fall to orchestrate a virtual general election. Social distancing has come in handily as the most convenient antidote to political solidarity. Biden has already made it clear that he’s not the least bit interested in making any real overtures toward bereft progressives, just as Hillary wasn’t after her forceful seizure of the nomination in 2016.
When they stopped counting the vote in Iowa, depriving the leading candidate of essential momentum, it was a clear indication that once again the party establishment would do everything to manipulate results in favor of yet another neoliberal avatar bound to lose to Trump in an ignominious landslide—which is actually what the Democratic party establishment wants, four more years of their demonized opponent rather than the tiniest return toward social decency. Nothing about the coronavirus changes this essential dynamic.
That’s how bad the Democratic party has become, blatantly tipping the scales toward their favored outcome in order to maintain oligarchic control, and they expect us to Vote Blue No Matter Who?
We’re asked to believe that the candidate who supported ordinary people at the grassroots level all across the country, by lending crucial support to strikesand direct action, spawning innumerable viable candidacies at the local and state levels, and regularly summoning many thousands of people to populist rallies calling for basic human decency, was easily defeated by a cognitively challenged Wall Street shill who has backed every economic and foreign policy barbarity of the last 50 years, and who cannot be put in a small gym with a few dozen people without descending into furious spittles of verbal aggression.
We’re supposed to trust that the candidate with a pervasive national presence for the last five years was suddenly, in a matter of 72 hours, annihilated by the geezer who had zero volunteers, staff or advertising in any of the states he miraculously turned around by 20, 30 or 40 points.
It’s time to put an end to this sham, because we can’t accede to this level of duplicity without ourselves becoming complicit in the madness. Trump essentially terminated the neoliberal Republican party in one election cycle, but because the Democratic party establishment is more entrenched and dangerous, the prime carrier of the neoliberal virus to which the Republicans are just accessories, it is the more difficult enemy to beat.
To recap some of what we have seen from the great minds trying to herd us all into submission toward Hillary 2.0, the dementia version:
·        Herd 29 Trojan horses into the race, all pretending to be some version of or alternative to the clear ideological victor from 2016, and all of them unmasking themselves at appropriate stages of the race (three of them at the last moment before South Carolina) in order to maximize damage to one candidate alone.
·        Insist on a series of parodic debates orchestrating various degrees of hostility toward the lone populist, and focusing outlandish attention on marginal candidates rather than giving the front-runner his due.
·        Engineer the Iowa vote-counting catastrophe without anyone taking responsibility, and DNC chair Tom Perez not only not resigning but feeling empowered to engender further chaos.
·        Repeat all the instances of voter suppression in close simulation of all the 2016 states, as if to thumb their noses at any semblance of voting integrity.
·        Be part of closely coordinated media campaigns harping on electability, centrism and moderation, to the point where the liberal media (the Times, CNN, MSNBC) become indistinguishable from campaign opponents and the party apparatus. For the first three months of the year, the New York Times turned into a chorus of single-minded “Never Bernie” propaganda, exceeding even their “Never Trump” loathing of four years ago.
·        Recruit Barack Obama to save Biden’s hide when he remained the last one standing, with the same ominous figures from 2016 (Jim “there will be no free education” Clyburn, Harry “get the culinary workers to caucus for Hillary” Reid, and others) reprising to the finest detail the same walk-on bits they played last time.
·        Keep changing debate rules, by permitting entry to a last-minute white knight in the form of Michael Bloomberg, and the more recent rule change to prevent Tulsi Gabbard the opportunity of taking down Biden.
·        Keep the option of cheating the delegate leader at the convention alive throughout the campaign, rather than stamping it out as a no-go in order to preserve the credibility of primary voting.
·        Express no displeasure at clear voter suppression in Texas and California, or curiosity about strange exit poll versus final results in Virginia, Massachusetts, Maine and Minnesota, which showed unprecedented swings toward Biden.
Is this enough manipulation for you?
Sanders more than abided by party decorum for the last four years. Ever since he endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016, and later yielded to Chuck Schumer’s request to join the senate leadership, he has been the most faithful of team players, observing every nicety and going along with the party line to the extent that there is no direct contradiction with his principles. The least he could have expected in return was a token amount of fair play, to let his social welfare philosophy compete on equal grounds with neoliberalism, yet this was vehemently denied.
At this point, is he obligated to play by the rules? Are we, if we are to draw obvious conclusions from the evidence at hand?
The Democratic party would much rather see Trump reelected by nominating a flawed neoliberal candidate with as much baggage and who is as associated with the recent Clinton failure as is Biden. Think about it: the party we’re supposed to get behind actually prefers fascism over the mildest concessions to social democracy, in order that the entire power structure might persist unchanged. For the sake of denying the slightest help to poor, debt-burdened, sick and unemployed people, this party would rather have untrammeled white nationalism, immigrants in concentration camps, and accelerated income inequality, as though we could sustain any more of it than we already have.
To defeat a handful of broadly popular proposals to address economic inequality, the Democratic party facilitated the entry of a former Republican mayor who administered the harassment of Muslims and minorities after 9/11, who gave over his city to unaccountable developers and oligarchs, and who happens to be the world’s ninth-richest person—not just a billionaire, of the kind Sanders is railing against, but one 60 times over.
And when that didn’t fly, because of said plutocrat’s manifest misogyny, racism and class privilege, they went back to their original choice, the freewheeling politico Wall Street loves to love, the senator from MBNA, the secret manipulator behind every bad trade deal and Wall Street giveaway and incarceration mania and war of choice of the last 50 years. The party Sanders has chosen to be loyal to knows that either of those candidates, the Manhattan multi-billionaire or the Delaware political enabler, would handily lose to Trump, but the idea is to keep playing the game, to engage us all in a performance that pretends to be even-handed. We wait patiently for health care and public education and a living wage, while we die in the meantime.
The party of death has demonstrated again and again in this primary campaign that its sole objective is to discredit left populism, even if it means abetting the growing dominance of fascist populism. The party we’re supposed to fall behind is the real facilitator, not the Republican party, because it is actively preventing an electable alternative to Trump, as shown in all the polls of the last five years.
The “woke” wing of the Democratic party—which is identical to the neoliberal wing in acting all high-and-mighty toward working-class folks, otherwise known as deplorables—precisely duplicated its machinations from 2016, when Hillary Clinton was said to be the victim of the angry Bernie Bros, a more ridiculous myth than which was never heard in a presidential campaign.
The woke crowd, who universally refused to support Sanders (whose campaign is a sincere homage to the Poor People’s Campaign run by Martin Luther King, Jr., or FDR’s economic bill of rights, or Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society program), got behind a series of identity politics-driven candidates, culminating in the last one to leave the race, who immediately got busy gaslighting the Sanders movement for its alleged misogyny. The woke wing was a fraud all along, they never did care to help actual working people with actual debilities. We knew it in 2016 and we know it even better now.
All the fallacies the Democratic party has exploited over five decades reached an extreme form of hypocrisy in the 2020 campaign. The least electable candidates were professionally sold as the most electable ones. Extremism on behalf of inequality and deprivation of basic human rights was packaged as moderate centrism. Sustained media campaigns were run against anyone questioning these straitjackets of thought, labeling us enemies of the people for wanting to help the people.
Emerging from his year-long sloth, Biden made it his mission to trash every element of Sanders’s “political revolution,” even in its most benign demands for a level playing field, which was the sum of the political gangsterism he so adeptly deployed at the March 15 debate, knowing he had the full backing of the party in shunning any move toward the kind of universal programs young voters demand.
Would Sanders supporters not be justified in abandoning this zombie party once and for all, if we do not end up with a fair electoral outcome, as it looks like we’re not going to while this primary fizzles out to an uncertain close? Are we not morally obligated to look for an alternative beyond, past and around this failed shell of a party?
In 2004 and again in 2016 they ran empty, fake, invisible campaigns once the primaries were over, with John Kerry and Hillary Clinton literally disappearing from the campaign trail for weeks at a time. They’d rather have Bush reelected then, and Trump reelected now, than raise the minimum wage to $15, make public college free again, or do something to save the planet from its runaway environmental crisis. While Sanders was responding like FDR II to address the public health emergency, Biden was nowhere to be seen.
We learned during this campaign that the all-time great woke candidate beloved of the wine cave class, namely the president upon whose nostalgic fumes we wish to resurrect a ghostly figure, is more willing than anyone else to stop the first stirrings of social democracy and do everything he can to maintain the chokehold of neoliberalism or neofascism.
The clarion call issued by the “Democratic” president of surveillance, wars, deportation and budget cuts appealed to the lowest instincts of career politicians in South Carolina and across the country as they  forcefully jerked us back to where we were supposed to stay. This former president, like the recent troop of candidates, is explicitly against Medicare for All, and every other basic demand this moment of social distress cries out for. Biden and his cronies in the party are willing to go no further than trying to add a public option to the Affordable Care Act; even after the virus escalation, universal programs of the kind Sanders’s movement calls for are nowhere within range of their consideration.
The Democratic party wants to crush the joy and life out of youth, pretending that they don’t come out to vote, and that the entire machinery of politics should be aimed at keeping the country delicately balanced between one half meritocrats and one half deplorables, appealing to a minute number of antiquated voters in Ohio and Florida in order to maintain policy stasis. They gaslight us into thinking that actual social justice aspirants of diverse races and backgrounds, rather than the fake white woke influencers, are the real problem because of our hostility. They impose “party unity” and discipline in the service of continuing the very power structure that has given us unsustainable debt and unaffordability of basic human conveniences. When confronted by enthusiastic participation in Democratic primaries, mainly the responsibility of one Bernard Sanders of Vermont, they counter with the embodiment of the darkest hells of plutocracy, namely Michael Bloomberg. As expected, they have already used the coronavirus crisis to shut down any remaining trace of political idealism, because in this moment of emergency we cannot expect anything better than to bow down to the former president’s faithful old lapdog.
The Democratic party of 2020, after more than 50 years of succumbing to a murderous form of capitalism, is not just a flawed vehicle for any sort of political renaissance. Why should we legitimize them by leaping around their phantom carousel, wearing colorful costumes and clown hats on the fairgrounds, when they won’t give us a ticket, when they tear it up if we do have one, and when there’s always a guard hanging around to bash our skulls in case we utter a cry of joy at some little win?
They are all but compelling us to leave the party. Will we have the imagination to do so at last in a mass exodus?

“For there to be betrayal, there would have to have been trust first.”
■ ABOUT. ■
name: Garrett “Tubbs” Miller age: forty-five occupation: quantum of devils president & owner of moonlight nightclub gender: cis-male pronouns: he/him sexuality: heterosexual
■ HISTORY. ■
Garrett grew up in a small town in Oaklahoma with two very Catholic parents. They would make him go to church every Sunday and he hated every second of it. Like any other teenager, he started to drink, stay out past curfew and sneak out of the house. When he tried marijuana for the first time, he immediately loved the feeling of being high and wouldn’t let an opportunity pass him to get a little high from weed or any other substance. His parent would threaten to send him to the military, to rehab or boarding school. He always thought they were empty threads until one day he came home to his bags packed and a stranger awaiting his arrival. While at a gas station halfway to a rehab facility, he ran away and got on a bus for New York City and didn’t turn back. He learned to live on his own, get the drugs he needed, all while living on the streets. During this time, he’d met Joshua Krongold someone who mirrored his personality. Hot headed, stubborn and a complete piece of shit. After hanging out with Josh enough, he’d chose to be a prospect for the Royals of Purgatory where he thought he’d be loyal to for the rest of his life.
After twenty years of being with the Royals his income surely increased, though so did his drug addiction. Just like when he was a teenager, he was able to keep it mostly under control, though his love for the high, came along with the vision of adding another market to the gangs' income. Garret believed that if the Royals invested as much time and effort into selling drugs like they do guns. Their income would most likely triple. He’d been suggesting drugs as another source of income for years. After a while he got tired of asking, he knew some of the Royals members we’re also interested in a drug income so he secretly started to do so on his own. He was successful for almost a straight year, although one risky move ended it all at once.
One night he’d planned a drug swap with a gang who was also purchasing  guns from the Royals. Half of the members who were chosen to make the trade was aware of the under the table sale that would happen. Tubbs himself was the getaway driver and he was a little nervous that his under the table drug business would be found out during this trade. When he heard the police sirens, he waited for what felt like eternity before driving off and leaving the brothers behind. That same night he was packing a bag since he knew it was all over for him. Though his friend and President to the club found him first and did what any president would do. Beat the living shit out of him, and replace his club tattoo with third degree burns he’ll have for the rest of his life. It was safe to say, he’d been banned from the Royals of Purgatory and ordered to leave New York, which is exactly what he’d intended to do.
Garret spend six months in New York state prison, before being transferred to Texas where he continued his 5 year sentence. During these six years, he’d become loyal and valuable to the Quantum of Devils members who were incarcerated. When he got out, he was welcomed and patched into the Quantum of Devils, within three years of that, he’d become president. Since then, he’s never felt more powerful, and unstoppable. He has people who follow every order, without hesitation due to the pure fear he’s instilled in all Devils members if they don’t comply. His reputation of killing, kidnapping, murdering the innocent, threatened family memebrs, all checked out.
When Garret first carried out his plan of taking over the Texas club, he’d imagined the president would pass him the club since he had become the vice president. Though his plan didn’t end as smoothly as he predicted. He knew he needed to make changes when the president of the club had mentioned his age, and his intent to leave the club for his daughters to run. Garret needed to take things into his own hands. When they made the move to New York with a second charter, Tubbs and some of his trusted members led the president of the Texas gang out into the city, into Royals territory and shot him in the head without any hesitation. They told the rest of the gang that, they spotted Royals members drive away after they heard the gunshot.
■ WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON? ■
Garret doesn’t believe in creating a family dynamic when it comes to running a business or a club. He knows first hand that there isn’t anyone you can trust other than yourself. This lesson hit home on the night he’d intended on leaving New York, the cops suddenly showed up and arrested him for gun trafficking. Garret didn’t think Joshua Krongold would ever snitch to the cops, he thought the 3rd degree burn would have been enough. Little did he know, it was his own family, the mother of his children who made the call.
■ KEEP THIS AWAY FROM YOUR ENEMIES ■
Since landing in New York he’s been working very hard at building a clientele base while preparing a new club as a front for his drug dealings. He knows that he’s going to step on some toes but he didn’t care, in fact, he wanted to make his presence known amongst his enemies. Which was exactly why he planted drugs in the Royals pub and put in an anonymous tip to the police. Within the hour, the bar was raided and was shut down for business. Tubbs was happy to be standing nearby when the arrest of two members was made, and it brought him so much joy to think of the shit storm he’d just started. Most people would think he was careless hurting the club, his ex-love Jenna and his son Malcolm were apart of. Though despite his hard exterior, he carries a love for his family that no one could ever break.
■ RELATIONSHIPS. ■
■ Joshua Krongold: Josh used to be one of his best friends, although as Carson Woods came into the picture he felt had been replaced, and he hated both of them for that.
■ Jenna Alcott: Before leaving the Royals Jenna and he had a very steamy relationship. Their ups and down had lead them to have two children, whom they continuously fought over. The pair weren’t right for each other in any way, though they couldn’t stay away from each other either. He was incredibly protective of her, and would often fight anyone who went near her. Though his throat would often go hoarse when they caught themselves sin another screaming match.
■ Mia Miller: When he returned to New York, one of the first things he wanted to do was reach out to his daughter. His one child who has actually responded to the few emails. Throughout her upbringing, he had always believed in Mia’s dreams. More so than her mother, he would say.
■ CONNECTIONS. ■
■ Elisabeth Duncan > Vice President
■ Dallas King > Sargent of Arms
■ Nari Kim > Devils Apprentice
■ Angelina Como > Previous President’s Daughter
■ Malcolm Alcott > Son who currently hates him.
Garrett Miller is a TAKEN character and is portrayed by John Bernthal who’s FC IS SEMI NEGOTIABLE.

Seasons Change (We Stayed The Same)
A commission paid for by @lxvescramble. I love writing for Soryu and mc’s dynamics, so this was such a treat. Thank you so much for the commission! ♡
The car felt eerily still, save for the quiet hum of the air conditioning. Samejima gripped the steering wheel, looking forward with the same neutral expression he always wore. His face looked more severe, the five years that had passed since Soryu last saw him hardening his features into something even colder. The sharp angles of his jaw and cheekbones made him look even more intimidating, especially when he spared a glance into the rearview mirror to lock eyes with the mob boss when they had come to a red light.
“Did Inui inform you of the changes in the Ice Dragons since your incarceration, Boss?” he asked, his voice taking on a slightly curious lift that only those closest to Samejima would pick up on. Soryu nodded curtly, adjusting the watch that sat snugly on his wrist.
“Yes” he replied, “he also spoke highly of your presence while I was gone. I commend you for your ability to step forward in my absence.” Soryu watches as something softer melts into Samejima’s dark eyes, a soft ‘thank you’ escaping his lips. A pressing question keeps Soryu from relaxing into the back of his seat, so the words come tumbling out before he can stop them.
“What became of her?” he asks, his attempt of keeping his voice level falling flat. He watches Samejima pull into the front driveway of the Ice Dragons’ inconspicuous headquarters, cutting the ignition short and turning in his seat to face his boss.
“I think it’s best you see for yourself.”
Soryu was told that she had moved out of the employee-designated housing shortly after his trial, but he had no idea the place she was in now would be of such luxury. He had to be personally ushered in by security into a brightly-lit building, its modern architecture telling him this was nowhere near what she could afford on a simple maid salary.
The ride up to her floor felt like it took ages, but the second the elevator doors slid open, Soryu couldn’t fight back the feeling that he should have taken more time to get his thoughts in order. His first call was to Eisuke upon release, getting all the information he needed on the status of her residency. The second was to her, the eagerness to see her face after so long driving him to where he was now-- facing the front door to her new apartment. He smoothed down the front of his jacket and rapped quietly against the door with his knuckle, mentally preparing himself to see her again.
After a moment, the door opened and Soryu was met with a familiar face. Her hair was longer at this point, but she was impeccably dressed and carried herself with an air of confidence. Her perfectly manicured nails shone in the light where her hand was pressed against the stark white of her front door, but her eyes were clouded with an unknown emotion as she took him in.
“Why don't you come inside?” she said after a moment, stepping aside to give him enough space to enter her apartment. He obliged, taking in the living quarters as he did so. Her apartment matched the interior design of the building, bright and modern. There was art he didn't recognize hanging in the entryway, and expensive-looking hardwood floors throughout the apartment. The sound of her heels against the floor felt oppressive as she lead him towards her living room.
“Can I get you something to drink?” she asks, making her way to a bar cart in the corner of the room.
“No, thank you" he replies, sitting down in a nearby armchair. He watches her as she pours a drink for herself, the flash of a familiar label catching his attention. “I didn’t realize you had a taste for whisky.” She flashes him a smile as she sits down, amber-colored drink in hand. “It’s been an acquired taste for sure, but a friend got me into it.” Soryu felt his heart clench at this, remembering the last time he saw the liquor. It was the night before his trial, when he sat down with Eisuke and talked over drinks. He remembers the CEO pulling the bottle from his personal stash, stating that it was his favorite and he only brought it out for special occasions.
Soryu watched as she brought the glass to her perfectly full lips, taking a sip before placing the glass on the coffee table. The sight of her lipstick stain on the rim brought Soryu back to reality.
“Have you been okay since I’ve been gone?” he asks thoughtfully, his suddenly dry throat making him wish he requested a drink. He watched her level a careful gaze at him, choosing her next words carefully.
“I had to be. I went back to school, finished my degree” She said, smoothing out her skirt with her hand. “I haven’t worked at the Tres Spades for a while now.” Soryu’s brow shot up in surprise. “Wow, really? That’s--” his voice falters for a moment, before looking at her curiously. “That’s great, really. I guess I didn’t think you’d ever leave the Tres Spades.” It’s her next words that rock him to his core.
“Five years is a long time, Soryu.”
The words bounce around in his skull, taking their time to register. How long had she been on this path alone? He mused over this until a sinking feeling made him wonder if she was alone, because surely there would have been countless people in and out of her life in a place of higher learning. Perhaps someone saw her quiet drive, the same passion and dedication that once drew him to her. The thought made his head swim, until he spoke the words that threatened to spill out of his lips from the moment he laid eyes on her once again.
“I’m sorry for what I did the night I left” he said, the emotion behind his words his driving force for his refusal to censor them. He wasn’t used to feeling so meek, but his tongue was dripping with an apology the second he walked into her home. He tore his gaze from her glass and studied her face, and felt a pang in his chest at the sight of her furrowed brow.
“It was quite the night, wasn’t it?” she replied quietly, eyes trained on the floor. She absently picked at a loose thread of her skirt, the black material a stark contrast against her skin. Soryu felt the urge to reach out and grasp her slender hand between his own, but he merely balled his hands into fists at his sides.
“I didn’t mean any of it.” The words made her head snap up, giving him a look of skepticism. Soryu took a deep breath before continuing, as if he was leaving his soul bare for her.
“The people that made me get caught” he started, twisting the buttons near the cuff of his suit jacket “they threatened to go after you, too.” He met her eyes with a pleading look of his own, desperate to make her understand. Another deep breath, Soryu leaned forward as if he were revealing a secret.
“They had the place bugged. I didn’t just tell Eisuke to get you out of that housing because it was too cramped, I did it because they were spying on you. They had you under their thumb, and were planning to make a move the second I was behind bars.” Once Soryu began explaining he couldn’t seem to stop, the words tumbling out of him so rapidly he didn’t even notice he was shaking until she wrapped her slender hand around his own. He looked down, turning his palm upward and intertwining their fingers as he paused for breath.
“I had to make it convincing” he whispered, the thought still hurting him to this day. “I couldn’t risk it. I couldn’t--” he stopped, taking in a shuddering breath. “I couldn’t stand the thought of losing you at the hands of another.”
He expected her to flinch away at this, to rip her hand away from his grasp. He expected to lose her once again, which is why his eyes went wide when she merely squeezed his hand.
“Well, you didn’t” she breathed, her words coming out as unsteady as Soryu felt only moments before.
“But I thought I’d lost you.”
The Penthouse was dark as Soryu quietly slipped inside, his dress shoes echoing throughout the lobby as he walked across marble floors. It looked the same as it did the day he’d last stepped foot in it, the same checkered floors and the same red velvet couch greeting him like an old friend. His large hands dragged against the backrest of the couch, feeling the slightly scratchy material beneath his touch as he took in the room once more. Soryu was so caught up in the scenery, he didn’t hear the door creak open once again until a throaty chuckle behind him snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Never thought I’d see your face around here again.”
Glancing over his shoulder, Soryu took in a man clad in an meticulously-pressed suit, fabric slim to the body and a subtle purple handkerchief tucked into the breast pocket. The man rubbed the hollow of his neck thoughtfully, his shirt unbuttoned enough to allow for easy access. He strode nonchalantly towards Soryu, but the gaze he held him in was something more akin to predatory.
“Eisuke” Soryu greeted curtly, turning to face the man in full. Eisuke didn’t address him further, instead walking past him completely and making his way to the liquor cabinet. He returned momentarily with two glasses and a bottle pressed with a label Soryu was beginning to loathe.
“Drink with me” he replied. It was more of a command than anything, as Eisuke tossed the cap of the liquor onto the coffee table and poured both of them a drink. Soryu watched the amber-hued liquid fill the short glass before him, it’s contents tipping slightly as Eisuke pressed the glass into his hand.
“Thank you” Soryu replied smoothly, tilting the glass back and letting the woodsy-tasting drink fill his mouth. He watched as Eisuke draped himself across the couch, motioning with his own glass for Soryu to do the same. The mobster complied, taking a seat on the adjacent couch and resting the arm that held his drink on the plush armrest.
“It appears we have much to catch up on” Soryu said after a moment, when it was clear that Eisuke was more occupied with his drink than the man in front of him. He quickly realized he was mistaken, however, when Eisuke’s eyes met his with a familiar glint.
“That we do. I heard you met up with the girl” he said, swirling the liquor in his glass for a moment before taking another sip.
“Yes, I did. Thank you for setting her up in her new place” Soryu replied, taking a sip of his own sweet drink. In a move that Soryu had not seen in even longer than he had been away, Eisuke scoffed as he drained his glass and set it down with more force than necessary.
“I hardly did anything” he replied, a lit of amusement in his words. “All I did was give her enough to get her started with classes. She’s quite a clever thing.” The words make Soryu’s lips tug into a bitter smile.
“She certainly is” he murmurs, letting the amber liquid fill his mouth as he sips. “I wonder if she’s clever enough to realize she could do better.”
He hears Eisuke chuckle again. Soryu’s eyes flick upward, taking in the sight of his longtime friend reach out for Soryu’s nearly-empty glass. The mobster complies, handing over the drinkware and letting Eisuke fill it with delicate movements.
“Do you really think she would?” Eisuke questions, words dripping with an emotion that Soryu can’t quite place. He hands back the glass without another word, only an impish grin across his handsome features.
The two of them drink and catch up in casual conversation, the night passing quickly as the friends bond over lost time. It isn’t until the early morning hours, when Soryu has his head tilted back mid-chuckle, that Eisuke breeches the subject again.
“I think it would do you well to go talk to her again” Eisuke says softly, a rare look of fondness for his friend flashing over his face. Soryu’s laughter subsides, his head lulling back into the sofa as he looks at the CEO with half-lidded eyes.
“Since when did you care about my personal endeavors?” He asks, amused. Eisuke’s neutral expression returns as he gathers up their now-empty glasses.
“Call it a premonition” Eisuke replies non committedly, nimble fingers already screwing the cap back on the bottle of liquor. Soryu nods thoughtfully, insecure thoughts creeping back into his mind.
“I think I’ll take you up on that.”
As if his life were some cliche drama movie, the next morning met Soryu with dreary gray clouds and pelting rain. Soryu shrugged on an extra layer before leaving the house, choosing to take his own personal vehicle instead of one of the Ice Dragons’ cars. The car felt comforting under his touch, knowing that it was a constant in his life that was quickly starting to feel out of control.
He wasn’t used to her new residence, so it took him an extra few minutes to find the appropriate parking. By the time he was at her door, he was fifteen minutes past their scheduled time to meet. He knocked sheepishly, expecting to be met with a firm expression. Instead, she opened the door with wide eyes.
“You’re really here” she breathed, looking at him almost as if she didn’t truly believe he was standing before her. His brows knit as he looked down at her.
“Of course I am. Were we supposed to meet on another day?” he asked, suddenly nervous that he had caught her off-guard. What he wasn’t expecting was her to drop the hand that was holding the door open and encompass him in a hug. Her small frame was pressed against him, face burying into his chest. The action takes the taller man by surprise, and it takes Soryu a half a second to wrap his strong arms around her.
“What am I going to do with you?” he hears her mumble into his t-shirt. Soryu responds by pressing a kiss to the top of her head, the scent of her shampoo an achingly familiar sensation. For a moment, their embrace eases his anxiety and he’s taken back to where they were five years ago. His thumb sweeps against the back of her arm. A comforting motion that relaxes her into his chest.
“I missed you” she whispers, pulling away enough to look Soryu in the eye. Soryu is grateful for this, since the words cause his heart to hammer in his chest. His brow furrows, hesitant to accept her statement.
“I figured you’d move on without me” Soryu replies softly, letting his hand fall to her waist. Her delicate features twist into something akin to confusion, her head tilting to the side slightly.
“I’m always going to wait for you” she says, cupping his face with her hand. He leans into the touch, nosing into her palm.
“What am I going to do with you?” he echos, a soft smile tugging at his lips. With a smile, she reaches up and presses their lips together. The response that comes is one that soothes his anxious heart and quiets his racing mind.
“Love me, I suppose.”

Rick and Morty Season 5 Episode 7 Review: Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion
https://ift.tt/3vNZzf4
This RICK AND MORTY review contains spoilers.
Rick and Morty Season 5 Episode 7
If there’s one thing characterizes season five of Rick and Morty, it’s that everything happens so much, all the time. It’s tough to pinpoint exactly how this makes it different from prior seasons. After all, early in the series’ life, co-creator Justin Roiland said the goal with a Rick and Morty plot was to take a premise another show would’ve made a whole episode out of and instead just make that the first act, using the remaining acts to pile insanity atop insanity. This is a series with a setting of infinite universes and a protagonist who’s basically a god, so the scope of every episode should reflect that by going all out.
It’s therefore tough to say why “Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion” and all the other breakneck-paced, amped up episodes of season five feel so overwhelming and different compared to what we got from Rick and Morty past. I might need to rewatch the whole series to definitively figure out what precisely is going on here, but I’ll take a general stab at it. The plots of older episodes probably worked for two core reasons: one, strong characterization kept everything grounded and, two, no matter how much crazy shit an episode piled on, it still felt like an extension of the initial, core premise.
Take, for example, season three’s premiere episode, “The Rickshank Redemption,” which is one of the first episodes I can remember stunning me with just how stuffed with… stuff it was. In this episode, we learn that, since Rick’s incarceration at the end of the previous season, the Galactic Federation has colonized Earth. We then see scenes from inside Rick’s mind, we get Rick doing a whole lot of body-swapping, and we witness the fallout of Rick singlehandedly destroying the Galactic Federation’s economy.
It’s a lot (this is also the infamous Szechuan Sauce episode), but it manages to stay coherent and focused because the drive of the episode throughout is Rick escaping and upending the Galactic Federation, thereby restoring order. Furthermore, there are good, grounding character moments between Rick, Summer, and Morty as well as a surprising change in the family dynamic at the end when Beth announces she’s leaving Jerry. The show’s setting, too, feels solidly characterized as the episode builds upon previous plot elements—the Citadel of Ricks, the Cronenberg universe, and Birdperson—in fun and inventive ways.
Now, take “Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion,” which is ostensibly a Voltron homage episode, but which, in the end, actually has precious little in the way of giant robot vs. monster battles. Yes, to an extent, the episode is a deliberate bait and switch; it sets you up for a giant robot homage, but reveals itself instead to be a stealth gangster homage (Goodfellas, mostly, though there’s some Scarface in there, and also a reference to The Aviator, just for kicks). This is one of co-creator Dan Harmon’s signature moves, combining two drastically different genres together. He most notably first showcased it in the season two Community episode, “Critical Film Studies,” which managed to be both a dual homage to Pulp Fiction and My Dinner with Andre, and its own interesting Frankenstein’s monster besides that. The problem with “Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion” is that, as more bizarre plot turns get thrown in, it doesn’t feel like a giant robot episode or a gangster episode; it’s just a bunch of crazy crap.

There are two big plot developments that make it feel like random junk is just happening. My least favorite is the sudden introduction of anime characters who make funny anime faces and noises. This series has never shown much respect to the fourth wall, but there’s something very lazy and lame about these goofy characters drawn in a different art style that rubs me the wrong way. It feels sort of Family Guy-esque in the way that series is so centered around inane asides and cutaways that the plot is just a formality. These anime characters, too, signal that this storyline is just a lot of silly fluff.
Then there’s the return of the giant incest baby from “Rickdependence Spray.” I know I just said “The Rickshank Redemption” was good because of how it brought back old plot elements, but that’s because it built upon them. The Citadel of Ricks, for example, returned in that episode as an antagonism that the characters had to deal with. Comparatively, in this episode, it feels like they just mention the giant incest baby a lot so that it can turn up as a giant incest baby ex machina at the end. When taken with everything else already going on in this episode, the giant incest baby is just another non-sequitur.
As far as characterization goes, this is another episode that, like “Mortyplicity,” flirts with the concept of family being the most important thing, but, also like that episode, it does so seemingly just to point and laugh at the idea. It’s hard to take the family stuff seriously (and I don’t think we’re expected to) when the characters abruptly reconcile immediately after plotting to murder one another (again, compare this with Jerry and Beth’s separation, which took a whole season to resolve).  There’s potentially interesting character stuff at the center here, with Morty and Summer vying for Rick’s affection, but not enough time is spent on it to lend it any emotional weight. Also, all emotion kind of goes out the window when the climax of your episode is a giant incest baby named Naruto slaughtering anime people.
“Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion” isn’t the worst episode of season five, but it’s just another episode of season five. I feel I should note that the overstuffed zaniness of these episodes is not entirely exclusive to this season. This brand of Rick and Morty has always been lurking in the series’ DNA and I’ve found portents of the problems I have with these episodes rearing their heads in my reviews as early as season two’s “Get Schwifty.” The core difference here is that those older episodes were at least still consistently funny, while season five episodes only get a few chuckles out of me per. “Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion” unfortunately continues that trend.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Also, Dan Harmon already did a much better Goodfellas homage in the first season of Community.

We're used to seeing and hearing Jonathan Groff on film as the voice of Kristoff in Disney's animated hit, Frozen, or in LGBT-themed projects like Looking and The Normal Heart, but for his latest role, he's taking a path that's much, much darker as the lead in the new Netflix drama Mindhunter.
The series, which drops all first-season episodes Friday on the streaming service, follows Groff's Holden Ford—an FBI agent in the 1970s who decides that instead of simply locking away serial killers like Charles Manson and Edmund Kemper (aka The Coed Killer), why not talk to them and learn what drives their behavior in the hopes of finding and stopping others like them? Ford, somewhat naive and green, pairs with seasoned, gruff FBI agent Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as they hit the road to talk to various incarcerated killers.
The series is based on the nonfiction book by John E. Douglas, a pioneer in criminal profiling. It is executive-produced by David Fincher (The Social Network, Seven, Fight Club), who also directed four episodes, and costars Anna Torv (Fringe), Cotter Smith, Cameron Britton and Hannah Gross.
Groff talked with TV Insider and explained why he was drawn to this darker world, whether he thinks much about being a gay man playing a straight character, and how he and his fellow actors kept things light on the very dark and serious set.
When you first heard about the project and read the script, what were your thoughts on how you would be a part of this show?
Jonathan Groff: I guess I was really intrigued by the complexity of the writing in the scenes and the arc of the character and, obviously, the David Fincher of it all. I’ve always wanted to work with him. I’m such a huge fan of his, and the project just seemed so dense and interesting that it was kind of a no-brainer, actually. And it was Netflix, so it seemed like a departure, something that I’ve never really done before and a world that I’ve never really worked in before, and it was a really incredible experience.
How would you describe Holden?
I see him as a really intelligent and thoughtful FBI agent who is going through an existential crisis, kind of like, “What does all of this mean, and are we really doing everything that we need to do?” After someone loses their life in the first scene of the first episode, it sends him down this rabbit hole of, “Is this training that we are getting at the FBI enough? Could we be doing more?”
And then he has this idea of interviewing people who are incarcerated, which initially sounds like an insane idea but ends up becoming a huge part of the Behavioral Science Unit at the FBI, which ends up becoming what it is now the strongest arm of the FBI.
But this is almost a turning point for a lot of investigation that we see play out in the show, right?
Yes. It is the late '70s, so coming out of all this mind expansion of the '60s and early '70s and applying that idea to law enforcement. The FBI blows open this whole side that we now are used to talking about and are so well-versed in. But the idea that in the late '70s the phrase "serial killer" didn’t even exist is so interesting. Part of the fun of watching this show is watching the characters stumble upon, in some ways, these interview techniques and these ideas that we are so familiar with now.
What was your familiarity with the '70s? Did you have to do research about what the world was like then?
Specifically, when I was told late-'70s FBI, I was like, “Oh, great, I’ll be in like bell bottoms and an insane shirt.” There was actually a version of one of the scenes where to get one of the serial killers to talk I dress like a modern hippie, but that got changed around and cut and whatever. But the FBI was a little bit frozen in time, and a little behind the times, to be perfectly honest, because they were still coming out of the J. Edgar Hoover era. It was like the suits and stuff, which is what Holden and Tench are still kind of wearing.
That was the whole point of the turning point of the FBI, that Holden is bringing in these modern ideas from society and goes back to study in school to learn about psychology and the brain and the way people think and the way they relate to each other. And he is interested in bridging that gap between the culture and the FBI.
Do you think Holden has something to learn from Debbie (Hannah Gross), who he starts dating in the first episode, that will help him in his work? We see from the start that she sees things differently than he does.
She is studying to get her Ph.D in college, so she is this brainiac, and when we first meet in that bar she quizzes him on psychology and famous ideas and people in the world of psychology that he doesn’t know anything about. And she says, “Wow, you work for the Behavioral Science Unit, but you don’t know anything about human behavior.” It is kind of a light bulb moment for him to explore the world of psychology more and see how it could be applied to the sort of black-and-white world of law enforcement.
Their relationship in the beginning sort of lights a fire because she blows his mind and opens up a world for him that he didn’t really know existed, and he’s obsessed with using those thoughts and ideas and experiments, and applying them to the world of law enforcement in some ways that work and some ways that do not work.
What is interesting with that relationship is it evolves throughout the season because his ambition grows and gets more hungry as time goes along, and what starts out as a great way of connecting ends up becoming incredibly complicated in his relationship with Debbie.
The relationship with Tench is so fun as one of those great TV partnerships. How does that relationship progress, especially as the guys seem so different in the beginning?
We are kind of like the odd couple, I think. Holden is a nerdy and incredibly ambitious dude, and then Tench has sort of reached a point in his career where he is ready to just go on cruise control. But to his credit he can’t deny the fact that this kid has kind of come up with a good idea. It sort of lights a fire, an inspiration in Tench no matter how begrudgingly he does move forward and busts open the Behavioral Science Unit with all these new ideas.
Holt and I had so much fun together playing with that odd couple dynamic, because he and I—both as our characters and not as our characters—are so different in so many ways, and we had so much fun playing with that relationship.
What was your thought process on the sexuality of the character?
It is a huge part of the character, because it blows his mind sexually, as well. It is not that Holden is a virgin necessarily, but he has sort of an innocence about him, and Debbie is that free-spirited '70s chick, and she starts blowing his mind sexually. She is so open and free and liberated. And he is so kind of buttoned-up and awkward about it all. She teaches him a lot about sex.
[Holden] is having his sexual awakening while he is talking to these killers that are so f***ed up sexually, so he is feeling this sexual liberation at the same time as he is talking to these repressed murderers who, because of their repression and their psychology and their relationships with their mothers, can only get off by cutting off women’s necks and f**king their heads.
It is an interesting situation sexually and psychologically, and the crossover is a huge part of Holden and a huge part of the character’s journey. And as you see later on in the season as well, the sex element as related to Debbie, and as related to the reign of the serial killer gets very muddled and complicated.
I’ve talked to Matt Bomer about being out in real life and still playing straight roles. I think there is something revolutionary about that—maybe quietly revolutionary—but is that something you thought about in playing a straight character here?
It never even occurred to me, because even on Looking [the HBO gay-centric series in which Groff starred from 2014-16] we had straight guys playing gay guys, and gay guys playing straight guys. I was having sex onscreen with people who were straight in real life or gay in real life, it was so many different things and no one ever talked about the straight guys playing gay. Intimacy is such a specific thing between people that it isn’t something that I think about while I am acting, I have just been acting whatever is written. It is just not an issue.
How was shooting this show different from Looking or even something like Frozen? Did this one get in your head?
This sounds insane, and it happened with The Normal Heart, which was so serious and obviously everyone is dying of AIDS and the material is so intense and so dark that I think to counteract that we laughed a lot on set, between takes and we would keep it light. For Mindhunter we were shooting for 9 or 10 months, so it was a long shoot and it was long days, but we just made it really fun. We obviously committed to the darkness and committed to the intensity as was required, but for me, personally, at any kind of moment I had to come up for air and breathe I would embrace those opportunities. So we just laughed a lot, we really did.

If it's okay, could you write a meta on harry potter? Not the series but the character. And maybe discuss some of his dynamics with others if it's not too much?
Harry issuch an under-appreciated character, which is somewhat ridiculous given thatnot only is he the protagonist but he’s a well-written and multi-faceted character, with a lot of nuances, a compelling backstory and great dynamics with many ofthe main characters. Yet parts of the HP fandom will literally hate on him foranything; today I ran across a post which blasted a twelve-year-old Harry fornot financially supporting the Weasley, ignoring the fact that, you know, he’s twelve and the fact that theWeasleys would in no way ever accept Harry’s money.
Harryovercomes a lot throughout his life, and this is even before the whole ChosenOne crap was placed on his very young shoulders. For the first eleven years ofhis life, Harry literally never experienced love, support, affection or evenproper care. He was often neglected, at times outright abused by the Dursleys, and I think these years and these circumstances shaped Harry more than thefandom tends to recognise. A lot of his stubbornness and refusal to seek helpfrom adults would have stemmed from this, as he spent eleven years believingthat adults couldn’t or wouldn’t help him. His generosity and caring naturealso probably stems from this, having experienced neither in early years of hislife, he has a desire to share both.
Harryalso has a deep aversion to fighting and negativity, and unlike Ron andHermione, he derives no pleasure from arguing or fighting. He gets genuinelyupset whenever Ron and Hermione take their verbal sparring too far, oftensnapping at them and telling them to let it go. Harry spent so many years in avolatile environment, so many years where a single wrong word or look couldproduce an explosion, that his natural instinct is to avoid conflict andarguments, which is somewhat ironic given the argumentative natures of both ofhis best friends.
Harry isa character who doesn’t change much over the series. This isn’t to say that hedoesn’t grow or evolve as acharacter. He definitely undertakes his own journey, and goes from an isolatedand insecure young boy into a strong and heroic young adult. But who he is athis core never really changes. He holds onto his goodness, his self-righteousnessand his “saving people” attitude until the very end. If you look at hischaracterisation in the first novel compared to his characterisation in thelast novel, it is remarkably similar. He is still a person who will walk intocertain death to save others, still a person who believes in bravery and doingthe right thing, and even if his faith in those around him has been tested andstretched – and in some cases broken – his general belief in the good in theworld prevails.
Harry is such a genuinely good person, like, there are few characters out there who contain as much goodness and forgivenessas Harry does. He is always genuinely outraged and upset at what he perceivesto be wrongdoings, such as Snape’s unfairness and favouritism or Umbridge’s reignof terror. He also refuses to kowtow to authority if he believes they are inthe wrong, such as when both Fudge and Scrimgeour try to sway him to theirsides. Harry’s genuine goodness and belief in what is right, in what is fair is one of his defining charactertraits, and it amazes me that a lot of the fandom does not seem to see or acknowledgethis side of him.
I havealways found Harry to be quite an isolated character, and I believe that thistoo stems from his upbringing and his life with the Dursleys. Growing up in anenvironment where he received no support, where he had no friends and no familymembers who paid attention to him turned Harry into a very self-sufficient andsolitary person, and if you look closely at his inter-personal relationships, itbecomes apparent that all of his close relationships are with people who arealso isolated and/or lonely in their own way.
Ron andHarry bond almost instantly when the two meet on the Hogwarts Express, bothdelighted to make one another’s acquaintance. Despite his large family, Ron isalso a solitary person, not being particularly close to any of his siblings andoften feeling fierce competition with them. Harry not having had a singlefriend before in his life is keen to make one, but even at this young age candistinguish between a genuine offer of friendship (Ron) and a friendship whichmay come with strings attached or an inequality within the dynamic (Malfoy).
DespiteRon’s occasional jealousy (which is nowhere near as fierce or as prevalent asparts of the fandom would have you believe) Ron and Harry’s friendship is anequal partnership, mirroring that of James and Sirius. Both Ron and Harryhave a penchant for trouble making, and Ron does occasionally come across assomewhat callous and cruel, but both have a deep desire to do good and believein bravery and heroics, all of which bonds them and cements their friendship. Ithink they recognise the loneliness and desire for close bonds in one another, and both give and take over the course of the friendship, providing one of thestrongest friendships on the written page.
Harry’sfriendship with Hermione is somewhat different. While again, he has bonded withsomeone who is quite an isolated character and he is close to Hermione andobviously cares for her deeply, his dynamic with her is neither as free or as easy as his dynamic with Ron. He and Hermione are close to one another, butthey are both closer to and connect better with Ron than they do with eachother, and this is evident whenever the two spend long periods of time togetherwithout Ron’s presence, such as when Harry and Ron have their falling outduring GoF or when Ron leaves them during Deathly Hallows. When Harry is withRon one-on-one it is still easy and fun, but when it is just him and Hermione, things are different, and it really does show how integral Ron is to the Trio, and how his presence balances the dynamic within the group.
Harry’srelationships with people outside of the main Trio also reflect this tendencyto bond with isolated and/or lonely characters, as evidenced by his closefriendship with Luna and even his romantic relationship with Ginny. Bothgirls are initially presented as isolated characters who gain friends over thecourse of the books. Luna in particular is a very lonely soul, and I thinkHarry’s fondness for her stems from him relating to this loneliness.
EvenHarry’s relationships with the adults in his life follow the same pattern, asthe four closest adult friendships he has – Sirius, Lupin, Hagrid andDumbledore – are all with figures who are quite isolated. Sirius, of course, being incarcerated for much of his life and having lost all his friends hasbecome an isolated figure, and his relationship with Harry seems to combinethat of cool uncle and nephew with the dynamic of best friends. As much asSirius does genuinely love and care for Harry, there is a part of him that does see Harry as a James substitute, but the same can be said for the way in which Harry views Sirius, as asurrogate parental figure, as well as someone who can provide a link to hisparents.
Lupin andHagrid both also provide this link in their own ways, Lupin more so thanHagrid, having been a Marauder and someone who was close to both James andSirius. Harry’s relationship with Lupin feels somewhat like a mentorship which gradually moves into genuine friendship. His relationship with Hagrid, ofcourse, is just beautiful from the start and develops into one of the deepestand most heartfelt relationship of Harry’s. Hagrid, too, is another somewhatisolated soul, spurned for his freakish size and odd attachment to dangerouscreatures.
Harry’s relationship with Dumbledore really deserves its’ own meta, I feel like entirevolumes could be written about the nuances, intricacies and levels of thatrelationship, but once more, it shows Harry bonding with someone who has hadtheir fair share of isolation and loneliness, and who can identify with thepain and struggle Harry faces over the course of the series.
All up,Harry is just a wonderful character, rich, multi-faceted and very endearing. Ihave always loved Harry for his big heart, his desire to do what’s right, his stubbornnessand the determination he applies to every task he undertakes. He really is awoefully under-appreciated character and I often feel that the fandom ignoreshim and overlooks how amazing he actually is, and that is a real pity, becausethey’re missing out on a great character by doing so.

Shepard and Alenko’s love story: A Mass Effect meta and character analysis
Ten years since Mass Effect was released I thought it is never too late to write about this romance.  This write-up is dedicated to those who romanced Kaidan Alenko whose passion for him inspired me to write about my own thoughts and feelings. Note the character in this analysis is a Female Shepard.
Tumblr media
Screenshots from FluffyNinjaLlama
Loving Kaidan is suffering. Kaidan and his romance aren’t the most popular statistically. Although fanfiction heavily favors him second to Garrus only, the majority of players let him die in Virmire. Kaidan has the lowest survival rate and popularity among the original squadmates according to Bioware’s statistics.  He is constantly treated as a trade-off of Ashley in-game and in the fandom.
I want to stress that everyone’s Shepard is different and whoever we made her/him to be reflects our preferences, fantasies and choices. That is why Shepard’s love story with Kaidan would not be the same for anyone who played the game. Much of this analysis involves my own headcanons and meta. Long essay ahead:
Many players who romanced or even befriended Kaidan had to defend their choice. Fans tend to compare love interests and show everyone theirs is the best. That’s why there are titles like, “romance with the most content” which Liara takes, or “romance where he’s in your squad in three games” which belongs to Garrus and Tali, or even claims like the “love interest who looks most broken in the finale.” This takes away the immersion and appreciation of a character. Instead, the result is a popularity contest. Kaidan’s romance should be taken as it is so there would be no comparison with other love interests in this essay.
Shepard’s romance with Kaidan is an unforgettable experience that I cannot take away from my first, blind playthrough of Mass Effect. I believe that Shepard and Kaidan’s relationship is defined by conflicting forces. This is why romance with Kaidan can fail and be painful, but this is also the reason why it can be compelling.
For this write-up, I refer to Shepard as “she” and talk about her romance with Kaidan. While the romance is also available for male Shepard in the third game, it was treated differently than the longer romance with female Shepard and is not the same experience as my playthrough.
Shepard and Kaidan’s love story spans the whole Mass Effect trilogy.
Why this could break the relationship: Because a lot of what happens is outside of Shepard’s control and her relationship with Kaidan is heavily affected by what the story allows.
Why it’s amazing: Because it’s interwoven in the journey
The story of Commander Shepard is one of the best emotional rides in my life, and Kaidan was there when the ship launched. Kaidan’s romance is potentially the earliest chronologically as he was part of the Normandy in her mission to Eden Prime and would see the end of Shepard’s journey.
Tumblr media
Shepard and Kaidan’s romance cannot be fully appreciated in isolation. In my honest opinion, I find it unimpressive in the first game. Yet, it shows a promise from rocky beginnings. Kaidan’s attraction might have began when Shepard saved him in Eden Prime and their loss of Jenkins could have bonded them closer. The beginnings of a romance was born out of respect and admiration, but cannot be pursued due to military regulations. But eventually Shepard finds a way around this maybe out of boredom, maybe out of intense attraction or perhaps maybe as a way to be happy in dark times. Eitherway, Kaidan would tell Shepard he wants shore leave, because he wants to pursue her properly.
However, the following are inevitable in the course of the story:
Kaidan’s survival will be Shepard’s call no matter what. It is one of the vital choices in the story that we cannot avoid. To pursue the relationship it is inevitable that Ashley Williams will be lost instead. While Shepard’s intentions could have been purely tactical or pragmatic, it cannot change the fact that Kaidan’s life comes with a cost. Both Kaidan and Shepard has to carry this memory for the rest of their lives.
No matter what choices are made,  Kaidan and Shepard are bound to be physically separated and fight on opposing sides. No matter what, Shepard will lose her life in Alchera and Kaidan will grieve for her in two years. This becomes more complicated as Shepard is forced to fight with Cerberus while Kaidan is loyal to the Alliance. They cannot reconcile when Shepard is fighting the Collectors, and even after Omega relay as she will be incarcerated for months.
Because of the complicated events, a rift will form between Shepard and Kaidan, isolating them from each other emotionally.  The situation is unusual with Kaidan doubting if the Shepard he knows is the same person [biologically, not figuratively] , and this doubt causes him pain that he lashes out to her while Shepard at this time may have been changed by trauma and might not need Kaidan as a partner. Inevitably, they will point a gun at each other as Kaidan will be used by Udina as a leverage against Shepard.
2. Kaidan is the epitome of a paragon and a character with strong integrity, principles and development independent from Shepard.
Why it could break: Kaidan puts his morals above romance, certain actions can break his trust and respect for Shepard.
Why it’s amazing: When Shepard is entirely dependent on the player, and while she shaped the universe based on her decisions, Kaidan is a constant.
Kaidan: Maybe I was a romantic in the beginning. But I thought about it after Brain Camp – ah, sorry, “Biotic Acclimation and Temperance training.” I’m not looking for “the dream.” I just want to do some good. See what’s out here.
Kaidan will always be a paragon; he started the game caring about civilian lives in Eden Prime and throughout the story he’d always advise for the more noble choice. While through game mechanics in ME1 he can be more renegade/cynical, eventually he’ll be the same, morally uptight character at the end of the story. Kaidan’s character does not bend to Shepard’s decisions at all. No matter what Shepard says to Kaidan, or how she acts around him, Kaidan would act based on what he thinks is right, even if it puts him in a different path than Shepard, even the opposite.
Tumblr media
If Shepard didn’t gain Kaidan’s trust in Mass Effect 3 , the tragic outcome would be his death. Instead of hating Shepard, Kaidan would tell her that it’s better to “defend the wrong man than kill him.” He will stand his ground and would die for his principles, even if he made wrong choices or even if it was all in vain.
Kaidan Alenko: “Sometimes the way a thing goes down does matter, Shepard. Later, when you have to live with yourself. Knowing that you acted with integrity, then it matters.”
While Kaidan’s fate depends on Shepard’s decisions, he doesn’t need her to be who he is. He has come in terms with being a biotic and being abused when he was younger. He is a fully realized individual who has dealt with his past and knows his place in the world.
Although; despite the “goody-two-shoes” image, Kaidan isn’t blindly following rules or naive in his views. He has been willing to defy authority like stealing the Normandy, pointing a gun at Shepard or shooting Councilor Udina. He also believes that evil must be dealt with harshly, this is especially notable after Shepard discovered what Cerberus was doing to civilians in Horizon.
Overall, Kaidan isn’t just a character that you romance based on his potential as a partner. I would say that most significant part of Kaidan as Shepard’s love interest is what he represents. He isn’t just a desirable and lovable sweetheart, he’s humanity’s finest: an incorruptible Alliance soldier who fights for the good of the galaxy.
3. The relationship is nuanced with complexity and realism
Why it could break: The heavy nature of the relationship can burden Shepard.
Why it is amazing: because it explores dimensions of Shepard and Kaidan’s character
Now we have a dynamic story and a constant character, what is next? When I described Kaidan as constant, it doesn’t mean it’s one-dimensional. Rather, it takes a lot for Kaidan to retain his strong sense of self and control his emotions. This is where a lot of complexities lie; Kaidan is a man who keeps a storm within him and Shepard must embrace his dimensions.
Tumblr media
Kaidan protects people, even from himself. At the surface he’s thoughtful, caring, and compassionate person.  He channels this fire within him by being a protector who is willing to give hs life for the greater good. However, with his strong desire for good comes great anger and hatred towards what he finds evil. He despises Cerberus and The Illusive Man. During his youth, when his instructor hurt Rahna and threatened his life, his strong protective tendencies allowed him to kill for the first time
Shepard and Kaidan and empathize with each other with their mutual desire to save people, and this makes their camaraderie stronger. When Kaidan confesses that he thinks about the millions of people suffering and his desire to be with them, she tells Kaidan that he can use that frustration to fight. Shepard can give validation to Kaidan for his ideals, and in exchange, she would have someone behind her back.
Kaidan hides intense emotions that could make or break him and others. He does not take bonds lightly and does not allow himself to get compromised by relationships easily. That is why when he loves, he loves with all his heart. Kaidan falls hard and fast, and he does not let go of things that meant a lot to him. Rahna was his love fifteen years before the start of Mass Effect yet he talks of his experience with her like it was his only romance in his lifetime.
I’m sorry for what I said back on Horizon. I spent two years pulling myself back together after you went down with the Normandy. It took me a long time to get over my guilt for surviving and move on. I’d finally let my friends talk me into going out for drinks with a doctor on the Citadel. Nothing serious, but trying to let myself have a life again, you know?
Kaidan’s tendency for strong, long-lasting attachments is the reason why he was in agony for two years when Shepard died in Alchera. His hidden emotions that he cannot express freely is the reason why he lashed out to her in Horizon- relief, confusion, anger, pain, loss, all of it. There have been numerous write-ups that discusses Kaidan’s reaction on seeing Shepard. Yes, it was confrontational, unkind, unfair or possibly just inadequately written. Kaidan walked away instead of staying with Shepard, but it was a justified and realistic reaction. I have to emphasize that Kaidan is not abusive.  He never wants to hurt Shepard or manipulate her to keep his influence, his intentions may be selfish but born out of legitimate concerns.
I find his perspective of the events very interesting and heartbreaking. When Shepard died in Alchera, we aren’t shown how Kaidan reacts to this immediately, but based on ranks and Pressly dying as well, Kaidan was next in command. Kaidan would have been in-charge of all the survivors, waiting for Shepard and realizing he lost her.
Tumblr media
Then I saw you, and everything pulled hard to port. You were standing in front of me, but you were with Cerberus. I guess I really don’t know who either of us is anymore. Do you even remember that night before Ilos? That night meant everything to me… maybe it meant as much to you. But a lot has changed in the last two years and I can’t just put that aside.
In Shepard’s perspective, it’s only a few weeks have passed since she and Kaidan spend the night together, so his harsh treatment is very painful. For Kaidan, even if two years had passed, sharing intimacy with Shepard is something that meant a lot for him. The whole situation was unfair to both Shepard and Kaidan. Shepard would do what it takes to defeat the Collectors, Kaidan’s loyalty to the Alliance and his code of honor is above his feelings for Shepard.
Kaidan can get possessive even if she had moved on. Depending on the player’s interpretation, Kaidan may have been accusing Shepard of cheating as we as guilt-tripping her if she found someone else.  However, he’s willing to move past their conflicts and wholeheartedly gives himself to Shepard if she would take him back again.
While Kaidan is self-conscious, mature, principled and independent but Shepard can bring out his greatest vulnerabilities and flaws.  Kaidan would seek strength from Shepard twice in the story; before Ilos and before the final battle on earth. While he would give Shepard the validation she needed while confessing his feelings and pledging his loyalty. Yet he is also clearly asking for comfort from her. Kaidan is afraid of losing Shepard and he cannot hide it.
Tumblr media
Shepard and Kaidan may have a lot of happy moments together, but there is always the thought of having their last chances, and taking opportunities to be together before the inevitable. In London, Kaidan and Shepard can resign to certain death with the mission. They are not dreaming of happy endings and riding into the sunset, but rather they know their duty and the inevitability of loss. Kaidan has survived when all other biotics of generation have gone mad or died in agony, he lived when Jenkins and Ashley died, and survived Alchera when Shepard didn’t. Kaidan would tell Shepard that his life is nothing he had dreamed of if it wasn’t for her. But while he is thankful, he knows it is goodbye and cannot hide the pain inside him.
“Kaidan: I can’t lose you again.”
4. It’s a love earned and fought for
Why it could fail: It takes a lot of work to keep things together
Why it could be amazing: Because they could be each other’s greatest reward in their life
Tumblr media
Was it worth it?
As we have discussed, Shepard and Kaidan’s love story spans the trilogy and a considerable amount of time, it’s strained by forces beyond their control and their duties, and a complicated relationship in itself.
That is why the love story’s conclusion is up to Shepard. It is not merely a series of choices, but a relationship with Kaidan demands faithfulness from her. Kaidan values loyalty and things can fall apart if Shepard cannot give the same. She has to forgive and show understanding in Kaidan’s worst times, even if he is hurtful towards her. She must let go of some of her pride, stubbornness and selfishness to keep them together. Kaidan will give the same. He is willing to forgive Shepard, admit his shortcomings embrace everything she is until the end.
Shepard: When this is over, I’m going to be waiting for you. You’d better show up.
Kaidan: Don’t get me wrong. I’m going to fight like hell for the chance to hold you again.
It’s a love story that has grown from attraction to a deep love, it overcomes adversity - whether it is the forces beyond their control or conflict between them. What Shepard and Kaidan have could have been normal, easy and simple. They could have had a shore leave and spend time in normal dates. They could have had a normal life free from genocidal ancient space machines.  However, they took the chances that they had in the time given to them. They had a lot of those loving gazes, little touches, hugs, kisses, passionate sex and lovely words amidst all the chaos surrounding them. It’s just something very human.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shepard: Know that I love you, always.
Kaidan: I love you too. Take care.
Their fates after the Reaper war is up to us. But it has been an amazing ride and I think that after everything, they deserve a life together.

This was my fault.
Since S4 aired, I’ve had Mycroft on the brain. I’m not sure why but there has been something about him and his role in the wonkiness of the series that I can’t shake. I’ve made some passing, rather rambly remarks about him in the past few months, but hadn’t taken the time to go back and watch to really see if I was perhaps onto something. I’m still not certain I am, but by re-watching and paying close attention, it feels as if my misgivings about him and his part in it all may not have been unfounded.
Naive as it is to admit, I was- all the way up to the airing of T6T- staunchly in the pro-Mycroft / over-protective big brother / means well / isn’t a baddie camp. Wellllll, yeah. I’m not so sure of that reading any longer. Something’s rotten in Denmark and I think that something occupies a minor position in the British government. This is my incoherent attempt to work through some of what is bothering me about Mycroft   and hope that by the end, something of it all makes a bit of sense.
*I’m sure a lot of this has been brought up / discussed before by many others. This is in no way an attempt to claim these ideas as my own. Just trying to work through the thoughts as they come. Apologies in advance.*
Tumblr media
Loads of pics and rambling word-vomit below the cut.
Mycroft
Living in a world of goldfish can’t be easy for the arch enemy of Sherlock Holmes.
I love Mycroft. I’ve been a staunch advocate of his since the beginning. Naively touting that he really does have Sherlock’s best interests at heart. That his machinations couldn’t possibly be nefarious. Just a meddling, overbearing, too-deeply invested big brother that wants to be the hero of his baby bro. I still believe that to some degree. I don’t know why? I just can’t find it in my heart to accept he knowingly / wittingly played Moriarty’s game. Or, worse yet- that the game was all him and Moriarty happened to be a pawn as well.
I think a lot of my misgivings and willingness to excuse Mycroft’s actions up until now had a bit of a personal aspect for me. I have the kind of older brother that would (and has) done terrible awful things to me in order to make himself look good or to win the attention of other memebers of the family and make it a me vs him sort of deal. That’s not fun. It’s super harmful and I just wasn’t willing to accept the show I loved as my ‘get away’ from the nastiness that can be rl, would be the show that could kind of (if I squint my eyes just right) resemble a bit of my own family dynamic.
But, I digress.
What was his fault?
MYCROFT: This was my fault
SHERLOCK: This had nothing to do with you.
MYCROFT: A week in a prison cell and I should have realised.
SHERLOCK: Realised what?
MYCROFT: That in your case, solitary confinement is locking you up with your worst enemy.
This exchange from TAB was interesting. At the time it aired, it seemed only relevant to what had happened in that ep. Sherlock had used again to either figure out the reason Moriarty had returned via the Ricoletti case or he intended to die before his exile could begin.
S4 changed all that. To me, this seemed to become a much bigger admission of guilt on Mycroft’s part. But, what of it?
MYCROFT: Nobody deceives like an addict.
Throughout the entirety of the series, we’ve never witnessed Sherlock ‘the addict’. I think he may have been using off and on-
Tumblr media
But only for the reasons he said:
SHERLOCK: I’m not an addict. I’m a user. I alleviate boredom and occasionally heighten my thought processes.
(though, I would add alleviating a broken heart to that list as well. Poor lamb.)
A disguise is always a self-portrait
Mycroft calling Sherlock out on his addiction in TAB, for me, is a bit of a pot / kettle situation. Sherlock isn’t ‘technically’ an addict, but there does seem to be a Holmes brother with an addiction problem- . Mycroft and his addiction to power and need to control every aspect of Sherlock’s life.
MYCROFT: I was there for you before.
SHERLOCK: Before what?
MYCROFT: I’ll be there for you again. I’ll always be there for you.
Mycroft admits in TAB, that it was his fault. They- he and Sherlock- have an agreement. Ever since that day. Which we are then led to believe was some random moment in the past that Sherlock had ODed and Mycroft had come to the rescue. None of which correlates to the true reason Sherlock is the man he is if any of TFP is to be taken at face-value.
If Mycroft’s vow was that he would always be there for him. (Oh, that sounds familiar. Where have I heard that before?)
Tumblr media
Then where was Mycroft when Sherlock needed him after Mary’s death? As Sherlock spiralled out of control and went straight to hell??
Tumblr media
More to the point, where was the infamous list in TLD? Mycroft was miffed to have been called out of a meeting with the Prime Minister but it was clearly evident he was aware of Sherlock’s using during the intervening time since Mary’s ‘death’ but didn’t do anything about it. Didn’t demand the ‘list’. Just brought his spooks in when Sherlock was practically dead to find out what ‘triggered’ his time ‘back on the sauce’. Hmmm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wow, so much for being the smart one there, Myc.
So, what exactly was Mycroft admitting fault to? The levels of that admission in TAB are staggering: Sherlock’s isolation in solitary confinement, his drug use, the reason for his drug use.
However, in TFP we get the real reason™ for Mycroft’s confession of guilt: the re-writing of Sherlock’s memories. The list of Mycroft’s misdeeds regarding his brother (nevermind Eurus at the mo, that’s a whole other can of worms) now seems endless and a little much to swallow from a normal human being. I’m sorry but Mycroft is no Svengali in any literal sense of the word. If he were capable of all of this- to be responsible for all of Sherlock’s trials and tribulations- then Mycroft’s influence is beyond compare.
Oh, but wait- No it isn’t.
Tumblr media
That is one hell of a family trait!
I’ll be mother.
@gosherlocked wrote an interesting post about the Holmes family recently. In it she points out this line from the show:
“Every choice you ever made; every path you’ve ever taken – the man you are today … is your memory of Eurus.”
Which she then refutes beautifully with this comment:
Sorry, but no, Mycroft. This is not true. Sherlock may have been influenced by a lot of things but he cannot have become the man he is today just because of a non-existent memory. If he did not remember Eurus for decades, it is not possible that she has completely shaped his life.
Can you hear me screaming “THIS!” in response as I read that. Because that’s it right there in a nutshell, isn’t it? The whole reason nothing of this series makes a lick of sense because it completely edits and erases what came before it in the show.
And- HA! Isn’t that fucking hilarious because it’s exactly what Mycroft tells us at the beginning of T6T:
Tumblr media
So, everything is up to Mycroft’s discretion. Interesting. Stick a pin in that thought because we will come back to it in a bit.
Alternatively
There are two instances where this word comes into play and is the main reason I am now compelled to write all this down (and hope that much smarter minds than mine can make the connection a lot clearer). It feels as if this word is pivotal to what has happened in the show since HLV.
Immediately following TAB, during the convos that brought @gosherlocked and @the-7-percent-solution and I together in order to birth EMP theory, I made a random post about this word appearing in the opening sequence of TAB:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
noun:
1.a choice limited to one of two or more possibilities, as of things, propositions, or courses of action, the selection of which precludes any other possibility
adjective:
1.(of two things, propositions, or courses) mutually exclusive so that if one is chosen the other must be rejected
2.employing or following nontraditional or unconventional ideas, methods, etc.; existing outside the establishment
At that time, I merely found the word intriguing, in relation to what we were shown in TAB. The opening montage of what came before in the show up until the airing of TAB was a bit mind boggling. Not only was the timeline questionable, but the things which they decidedly omitted was a head-scratcher.
What happens once the alternative is introduced?
Tumblr media
Immediately following his exchange with Lady S and Sir Edwin, where the alternative was first discussed:
MYCROFT: In any event, there is no prison in which we could incarcerate Sherlock without causing a riot on a daily basis. The alternative, however ... would require your approval.
LADY SMALLWOOD: Hardly merciful, Mr Holmes.
Which really, Mycroft? Really?
Tumblr media
We are meant to believe the only alternative for Sherlock having killed CAM was a six-month suicide mission? When Sherrinford exists for the ‘uncontainables’?
The alternative is a turning point.
Nothing is ever the same in this show once that word is introduced. It immediately cuts to the tarmac scene and what do we get?
The first inkling that something is fishy with Mary’s characterisation:
Tumblr media
No one expected this turnaround, did they? What’s a little fatal shooting between besties, right?
Then we have this painful exchange. The last words between two men that have thought the sun rose and set on one another. The best and wisest and bravest man the other has ever known and they have nothing of importance to say to each other as Sherlock goes off (if not to John’s knowledge of certain death, clearly you would think Sherlock having killed a man to save his family) John could nut up and say THANK YOU, AT LEAST????
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AN ABORTED LOVE CONFESSION FOR CHRIST’S SAKE!!!!!
Tumblr media
But (and here I’m shootting myself in my own EMP foot) isn’t this how all of this might have played out through the lens of an emotionally-constipated, not-good-with-humans person?
Tumblr media
Perhaps this is Mycroft’s alternative tale. Editing. TD 12. Eurus’ influence. There’s no surprise that something has changed in the way this story is told. Maybe it’s the narrator. Maybe it’s simply Sherlock imagining the alternative because he knows Mycroft is at the heart of the problem, so he has put him front and center. I don’t know and I’m not sure any of us can really know until we get more (please, let us get more and answers to all of this)
What I am saying is that I don’t believe alternative was an accident.
Tumblr media
Previously
In both TAB and T6T, we get this sort of thing at the beginning ^^. A montage of highlights to get us back up to speed. Again, something is fuuuuucky, because in neither one is there ever  a callback to Mary shooting Sherlock.
From the moment we get the alternative, we get the retcon of Mary Morstan. Why? They solidly built her character to be the most amazing villain of the show. I daresay, capable of surpassing Moriarty in good old-fashioned nastiness.
And, it isn’t just Mary that is re-worked. No one since before the tarmac has been in character. I had previously stated my belief that S4 was merely a continuation of TAB- the Victorian personifications brought into the 21st century. It was John’s hair, of all things, that made me realise this as a possibility because it explains the why of John’s hair and Sherlock never bothering to mention it. But, looking at S4 in that vein, really did explain a lot- and make sense of the nonsensical- in a way nothing else had until that point.
I’m not saying I don’t still believe this isn’t all in Sherlock’s head- I do!- I just think that Mycroft has influenced it all much more than anyone originally thought.
Mycroft sees Sherlock as the child he still has to protect and I believe Sherlock subconsciously knows that, hence the exuberant andchild-like actions Sherlock has at the beginning of T6T. All of S4′s characterisations so wrong as to be laughable. Perhaps it’s howSherlock imagines Mycroft imagines them all to be?
Mycroft lied to us.
Tumblr media
He told Sherlock and John about Redbeard. He apparently helped arrange their stunt to get onto Sherrinford, so why did he perpetuate the lie? He knew Sherlock was confronting Eurus and she would tell him the truth. Or, no, as a matter of fact, she never said a word about Victor.
Tumblr media
Just that they never had a dog. The Victor bit was Sherlock’s own idea. But we saw the dog bowl. If Eurus brought Sherlock to Sherrinford to get emotional context to get to the truth of his repressed memories, why did she perpetuate the Redbeard story? She wanted him to remember “you don’t know about Redbeard”. She had him at Musgrave to reveal the story, but she kept the dog dish. Is this because it is really Mycroft’s mind and he still wanted to keep Sherlock from remembering?
No repercussions for Mycroft after Sherrinford.
Tumblr media
All of that planning, plotting, scheming, disguises, setting up an asylum as your own version of Saw- for what? Emotional context? Her oldest brother lied to her parents about her death, kept her locked away and isolated for years. Exploited her abilities for his own gain and she did nothing to him when she had the chance? This woman, who as a 6 year old, killed her brothers best friend because he wouldn’t play with her?
Tumblr media
Is Eurus some manifestation of Mycroft? There seems to be a theme here, and I can’t make the connections, so I want to add it and see if anyone else can connect the dots.
Cross-dressing Uncle Rudy and Lady Bracknell. Is Uncle Rudy a ‘codename’ for Mycroft? An invention, like Eurus, to keep Sherlock in line somehow? The East Wind?
Eurus’ song
As I wind down here with this whacked-out non-sense, I just want to leave this here. The last stanza of Eurus’ song and a reference we have seen made by Mycroft many times before:
Without your love he’ll be gone before Save pity for strangers, show love the door My soul seek the shade of my willow’s bloom Inside, brother mine Let Death make a room.
I have loads more about Mycroft I want to share, but I think this is already too long as it is, so I’ll say, if you’ve stuck around this far: stay tuned for part 2.

Ask Ausiello: Spoilers on Good Place, Riverdale, Timeless, B99, Resident, Million Little Things, Flash and More
Got a scoop request? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Send any/all of the above to [email protected]
Question: Got any Riverdale scoop? What’s next for Archie? —Kerri Ausiello: When we last saw Archie in the fall finale, he was dyeing his famous red locks and making a run for the Canadian border. Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa won’t tell us who he finds when he gets there, but “he is headed into the Canadian wilderness, for sure.” He won’t be seeing his dad Fred in the flesh anytime soon, though: It wasn’t shown on-screen, but the EP confirms that Fred did make it back into Riverdale before the quarantine came down.
Question: Any Million Little Things scoop? My friends and I are obsessed with it and hope it’s back for another season. —Montreal4 Ausiello: Remember how showrunner DJ Nash said that everyone in the group of friends has a secret they’ve kept? Look for Regina’s to come to light in Episode 14.
Question: Any scoop on what to expect when Grey’s Anatomy returns? —Al Ausiello: I will have a special holiday treat for you this coming Monday, so sit tight. In the meantime, I tried to get showrunner Krista Vernoff to share even the tiniest bit of intel about Jennifer Grey’s mysterious character and… I struck out. “I can’t [say anything],” she responded. “Because it would really ruin a twist and turn that I don’t want to ruin.” Hmm… I’m sticking with my initial prediction: She’s Jo’s mom.
Question: Anything on The Good Place? (Janet, specifically.) —Whitney Ausiello: Everyone’s favorite not-a-robot will be forever changed by having the humans materialize in Janet form, creator Michael Schur teases: “The way to really have empathy for people is to walk a mile in their shoes, and she did, like, the inverse of that. A bunch of people walked in her weird body for a decent amount of time… so that is another contributing factor to her evolution.” He adds that the season finale “has some pretty wonderful ‘compare this version of Janet to the one you saw in the pilot’ kinds of scenes.” So enjoy, Janet fans!
Question: I’m glad Dorian finally confronted Kaleb about his feeding problem on this week’s Legacies. Can I stop worrying about MG now? —Susan Ausiello: I don’t think it’s ever safe to stop worrying about MG, but as far as Kaleb goes, it sounds like Dorian’s pep talk was just the beginning. “Kaleb has a lot of really big ideas, and a lot of opinions about how things should work,” series creator Julie Plec says. “Much like in the real world when a hot-headed teenager thinks he can second guess what makes the rules the rules, he’s going to have a rude awakening pretty soon where he realizes he doesn’t know as much as he thinks he knows.”
Question: The ending of New Amsterdam‘s fall finale makes me think that Max’s cancer is progressing quicker than first assessed. Will this affect the clinical trial Dr. Sharpe has gotten him into? —Malasha Ausiello: We brought your query to showrunner David Schulner, and he said: “While we can’t reveal here what happened to Max on that dock, we will in our first episode back January 8. But, you’re right to ask if this will affect Max’s clinical trial. It most definitely will. This setback will change a lot of things in Max’s life. And Dr. Sharpe’s too. Thanks for watching and caring and writing to TVLine about the show.”
Question: Will The Flash give us any more hints about what Nora seems to be hiding? —SSH Ausiello: Now that we know there is some sort of alliance with Eobard Thawne, you should expect “a flash-forward flashback episode” that explains “how all that came to be, which will be a lot of fun,” says showrunner Todd Helbing. “You’ll slowly start to get the pieces of info that you need, but there will probably be one episode where we explain how that all happened to get her to come back [in time].”
Question: Challenge: Make me look forward to the Schitt’s Creek holiday episode more than I am already. — Belinda Ausiello: TVLine’s resident Schitthead Charlie Mason promises me that, no matter how great your expectations are, you won’t be disappointed — the special totally “sleighs.” What’s more, he issues a warning that the episode reveals a potential stumbling block to Alexis and Ted’s rekindled romance that neither she nor we anticipated.
Question: I need to know two things about Timeless: First, will #lyatt have a baby? Two, is Jessica really pregnant with Wyatt’s baby? —Miwako Ausiello: In response to your second question, star Matt Lanter says, “We address that [in the series finale, airing Dec. 20]. We’ll find out.” As for Wyatt, he’s not suspicious of Jessica and her baby news. “We’ve seen Wyatt be blinded by love throughout the last two seasons, though, and this is nothing new for him,” Lanter says. “Inherently, he’s a good person with a good heart, and I think he has a hard time accepting that people he loves or cares about … wouldn’t be good. So I think it’s easier as an audience member to look at Jessica and go, ‘Yeah, she’s lying.’ But I think Wyatt is just more blind to things.”
Question: How many time periods will we see in the Timeless finale? —Amanda Ausiello: “There are two-plus time periods, I will say that, that we have not visited before,” showrunner Arika Lisanne Mittman shares, adding that the historical time trips highlight “ethnic representations that we have not seen before [on the show]. Both of these stories are things that [are about] lesser known historical figures. You get to meet some new people that you’ve probably never heard of.”
Question: I’d love a Resident scoop on Conrad/Nic. —Holly Ausiello: I hope you enjoyed the couple’s honeymoon phase while it lasted, because the back half of Season 2 will be “nothing but obstacles” for the pair, according to executive producer Todd Harthan. “In just about every episode, there’s a new one for them to overcome… and they just start stacking up,” Harthan says, adding that the couple will be especially preoccupied with the health of Conrad’s father and Nic’s sister. “It’s going to be a ‘hold on and hope that they make it’ kind of ride,” he teases.
Question: Any hints on how to solve the Blindspot episode title puzzle for Season 4? —Hannah Ausiello: “Oh man! We finally built a title puzzle this season that is legit very hard to crack,” showrunner Martin Gero answers. “I will say this: The puzzle is an homage to some our favorite TV series and how they title the shows. Figure out which, and you might be a step closer.”
Question: Creek’s death on Midnight, Texas was so awful. Please promise me no one dies in tonight’s episode! —Rina Ausiello: I cannot make that promise. But I can tell you that Mr. Snuggly makes it through OK. So that’s something… right?
Question: Got any red-hot Chicago Fire scoopage, Aus? —Gene Ausiello: I see what you did there and I’m… very amused. Well done. The NBC drama is planning some girls-only bonding time for Sylvie, Stella and Emily. “They’re going to go on a road trip to [Sylvie] Brett’s hometown,” showrunner Derek Haas previews. The episode will air the week of Valentine’s Day, “so we’re calling it the Galentine’s trip.” Before that, though, the show will explore Emily’s “attitudes towards dating, which are different than Brett’s, and I don’t mean LGBTQ,” Haas explains. “I mean more of what [Emily, who is bisexual] considers casual versus what Brett considers casual. All of those dynamics are going to be deepened.”
Question: March is far away. I want American Gods scoop now! —Rob Ausiello: Well, because you asked so nicely… Pablo Schrieber says the “antagonist and ally” relationship between Mad Sweeney and Laura Moon will be tested big time by his allegiance to Mr. Wednesday when the Starz drama returns for Season 2. The leprechaun’s destiny “is tied to [Wednesday], no matter what, but it’s also very thoroughly tied to her,” the actor says. “So Sweeney is walking the line, balancing what he owes Wednesday and what he’s realizing he feels in other places.” Hmm. Sounds a lot like we’ll see Laura kissing the Blarney Stone before the season’s over, am I right?
Question: Can you give us any Outlander spoilers? (Especially involving Brianna’s and Jamie’s meeting!?!) This is my first time doing this — hope I’m doing it correctly! —Carolina Ausiello: You did OK. I’ll send you some notes about how to refine your approach in a separate email. Regarding the question at hand, I turn it over to our resident sassenach, Kim Roots, who has seen the scene in question: “I have rather high standards for the huge moments on this show — the wedding night, the print shop reunion, etc. — and I was incredibly satisfied by how the father-daughter plays out in [episode number redacted according to Starz’s spoiler restrictions]. Fans of the book definitely won’t be disappointed.”
Question: Elizabeth and Henry on Madam Secretary are #couplegoals. Please tell me anything you can. —Mary Ausiello: An upcoming episode opens with the McCords taking a tango lesson. And one of them is significantly more skilled than the other.
This AAnd That… ♦ THE BLACKLIST: As teased in the Season 6 trailer, Red will spend some time behind bars after being double-crossed by a close confidant — but don’t count him out just yet. “He’s really been stripped of his superpowers,” series creator Jon Bokenkamp shares. “He’s disconnected from his resources, he may have friends who will fall away and he’s sort of on his heels, which is new for us.” But Bokenkamp assures fans that “if anyone could embrace the solitude of a cell and the experience of incarceration with open arms, it would be Raymond Reddington. We have really high stakes, but we also have some of the most fun we’ve had, as well.” ♦ BROOKLYN NINE-NINE: There will be one major.hilarious change when the sitcom makes the leap from Fox to NBC in January. “We’re allowed to bleep and blur [now],” series co-creator Dan Goor recently told us. “Fox had a no bleeping and no pixelation policy.” Now the gloves are off. “Some filthy, filthy things have been said,” added Terry Crews. “I had one [joke] where I’m ashamed. I’m actually very, very ashamed. It was so jarring that everyone was like, ‘Whoa,’ and we needed to regroup… But holy cow, we never heard language like that on the show.” ♦ CHICAGO PD: Burgess is not the only one who will have a reaction to Upton and Ruzek’s romance. In an upcoming episode, Jay “responds in a way I think you’d expect Halstead to respond,” showrunner Rick Eid teases, “and I think what’s going on in his head is a little different than what he says.” Eid also adds that Jay’s “relationship [with] Upton is interesting and evolving, so don’t sleep on that.” ♦ HOUSEKEEPING NOTE: This is the last AA of ’18 so happy holidays and all that jazz!
That’s a wrap! Please send questions, comments and anonymous tips to [email protected]. (Additional reporting by Kim Roots, Andy Swift, Dave Nemetz, Vlada Gelman and Diane Gordon)

'Saving human beings’s lives’
in the subject of social engagement between youths, the actual march planners said they’d want to see extensive voter registration efforts within excessive colleges and voting instruction education. They bristle on the stereotype that will oil-soaked rags them as sluggish in addition to unengaged, whilst distinguishing in which motivating younger residents change.
And there’s not any longer 1 cause exactly why that is -- these people cite incarceration rates, arrêter suppression, feeling morose right after learning approximately the particular community machine, maintaining political beliefs nonetheless now not acting about these individuals, wondering it’s simply important to vote for presidents and the opinion involving vote casting since “uncool” or hard to help to make time for.
not in order to say how all their good friends would possibly forget that they may vote in a amount one selection if they will may be 17, as long as they flip 18 through the general.
