A little about Christmas’s past…back in the farm days when I was out in the bitter cold and treacherous heat of taking care of horses and all that involved taking care of the daily ins and outs of care of property, horse and human and canine…it was no easy task but it was a labor of love for the animals that I loved and cared for… Everyday was early, 4 am early, to be prepared for what lay ahead in the day. It was non stop from wake-up til maybe bedtime. When I say maybe, it depended on what happened during a 24 hr day. Animals get sick, hurt, emergencies, and mechanical to structure problems of barn and home. You did what had to be done, no questions you made things work no matter what the problem was. Skills learned sometimes on the run or perhaps the guidance of my dad infused that last min knowledge into my brain. Christmas time at the barn was always special. Warm mash, stockings hung on stall doors, extra treats and carrots as Santa never forgot his four legged friends…Herk and Sam always there and Xena was too for awhile and always wanted the horse cookies as they had extra fat and molasses It wasn’t easy deicing water troughs and filling all them with fresh water through the winter days…sometimes almost impossible but I never gave up and even if I had to use a sledge hammer to get through the hat ice and then get that new water for the fields…it was tough times but unforgettable. It took me and a staff of sometimes few, and some days just me alone to get the many tasks done before night fall came. All these memories surged due to a gift given by Kathi Peiffer and surged those farm memories to resurface. Dearest Brother,

I have put off writing this letter for as long as I can. I have kicked Charles out of the house. Last I heard, he has made it to Union City to follow his dream of working in moving pictures. I know that me removing him from my life seems extreme, but let me tell you my side before you side with his. Only Jane, may she rest in peace, and Mary knew and while they worried about my decision the concensus is that I did the right thing.

You see after the birth of Eunice Nicole he was so angry all the time. I was afraid for the children and myself. Then one night when Eunice was being especially cantankerous he threatened to throw her out one of the second story windows! I simply could not abide that! I told him to pack his things and go. He fought with me, but I grabbed the bolt-action and aimed it him. I told him to go and to not come back. I was so angry I don't even remember where Nathaniel or Leslie were. I think they might've been in the nursery. Well, he left. He packed up all of the clothes he could carry and he left. He stayed at the bar in town, Arthur told me he saw him and tried to call out to him but Charles pointedly ignored him. He took the train out of town the next morning.

It's been months and while I struggled at first with all of the house chores and what not, I have started taking on projects for the local ladies. I'm quite the seamstress apparently and I enjoy it! Its toughwork but I enjoy it. I enjoy the art of creating something from a plain stretch of cloth. I know that you are going to be put out with me for not coming clean sooner, but I was afraid of your judgement.

Oh, I've also changed Eunice's name from Eunice Nicole (which was his choice) to Eunice Virginia. I just got all the paperwork back. Mary's husband helped me with all of that. I do hope to hear back from you. I miss you. Maybe the children and I could come for a visit soon.
