Note
should we change T Rex’s name then?
the meaning of "saurus" is more akin to "reptile" than to "lizard" and, in fact, the mistranslation of anything ending in "saurus" to "lizard" is part of the same overall problem
so instead of changing it, we should all just jump on board the "it's tyrant REPTILE king" train

Tyrannosaurus Rex Tooth Late Cretaceous Period (approx. 67 million years ago) Lance Formation, Niobrara County, Wyoming, USA
A LARGE AND WELL-PRESERVED TOOTH FROM THE MOST FEARSOME PREDATOR EVER TO WALK THE EARTH
No animal elicits the combination of fascination, reverence, and fear quite like that of Tyrannosaurus rex, the "tyrant lizard king." Dominating the western landscape of Late Cretaceous North America, T. rex's five-foot-long skull was packed with 60 teeth and featured a bone-crushing bite force of nearly 13,000 pounds (5,900 kg) per square inch, the strongest of any terrestrial animal other than its ancestor, Gorgosaurus. In comparison to other carnivorous theropods, T. rex teeth are proportionately huge. Robust and thickly-enameled crowns strengthened dozens of teeth, with serrations on both the posterior and anterior edges. The almost unrivaled power of this 40-foot-long (12.2 m) apex predator allowed it to hunt virtually every large dinosaur in its environment, including Triceratops, Ankylosaurus, Ornithomimus, Pachycephalosaurus, Edmontosaurus, and even other tyrannosaurs.

Etymology of Dinosaur names
Tyrannosaurus rex: Directly translates to 'king tyrant lizard'. Tyrannosaurus came from the Ancient Greek túrannos, meaning tyrant, and saûros, meaning lizard. Rex was borrowed from the Latin rex, meaning king.
Velociraptor: Directly translates to 'swift thief', from the Latin vēlōx, meaning swift, and raptor, meaning thief.
Stegosaurus: Directly translates to 'roof lizard', from the Ancient Greek stégos, meaning roof, and saûros.
Triceratops: Directly translates to 'three-horned face', came from New Latin, from the Ancient Greek treîs, meaning three, kéras, meaning horn and ṓps, meaning face.
Allosaurus: Directly translates to 'different lizard', from the Ancient Greek állos, meaning different or other, and saûros. This is because at the time of its discovery, the allosaurus was the only known dinosaur with concave vertebrae.
Spinosaurus: Directly translates to 'spine lizard', from the Latin spīna, meaning spine or thorn, and the Ancient Greek saûros.
Brachiosaurus: Directly translates to 'arm lizard', from brachio, meaning relating to the arm, from the Latin bracchium, meaning arm or limb. This is because its forelegs are unusually longer than its hindlegs.
Ankylosaurus: Directly translates to 'fused/bent lizard', from the Ancient Greek ankúlos, meaning crooked or bent, and saûros. This may be in reference to ankylosis, a condition in which bones fuse together, since the dinosaur has some rear ribs fused to its vertebrae.
Iguanodon: Directly translates to 'iguana tooth', from the Spanish iguana (iguana) and the Ancient Greek odṓn, meaning tooth. This is because of the resemblance of its teeth to those of an iguana.
And my personal favourite (it's just so cute!), Micropachycephalosaurus: Directly translates to 'small thick-headed lizard', from the Ancient Greek mikrós (small), pakhús (thick), kephalḗ (head) and saûros. It was originally described as a pachycephalosaur, hence the name, however it has since been re-identified as a member of the Ceratopsia, as it lacks the thick skull roof of the the pachycephalosaurs.
Feel free to suggest your favourite dinosaur and I'll research the etymology of it :)

LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 6, Poll 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave and prior here.
Olivia-Fear and Hunger 2: Termina
Qualifications:
She is a wheelchair user and bisexual. During the confessional scene, players can have her admit to being attracted to any of the other train passengers, although O'saa immediately clocks her for being specifically attracted to one of the women on the train. Additionally, reading her mind in the demo reveals that she finds both Marina and Levi attractive.
Propaganda:
Olivia is my personal favorite disabled representation in any horror game since she does have to get through the game differently compared to the non-wheelchair using players, it is simply another way of experiencing the game. She's also just a very fun character among the horrors. She's also super down for killing the horrors with a gun she found! Elated even!
Havelock Vetinari-Discworld
Qualifications:
Canonically disabled (bad leg and uses a cane), fanon commonly as not-straight and even in-universe no one has any clue what this mans sexuality is. Also incredible queer vibes
Propaganda:
I love this man. Guy is a trained assassin who is probably some flavour of neurodivergent and is also running the biggest city in the world. He is a benevolent tyrant who despises slavery, actively drags the city towards the future with actual helpful projects such as revolutionizing the banking system and including species other then humans in the city and generally works for the city, not personal gain. Too many of the other rich people don’t really like him, which means his biggest supporters are the beggars guild, the sex workers (Who he allowed to essentially unionise) and occasionally the city watch, whose leader severely dislikes rich people and only supports him because everyone else would be worse. Vetinari also keeps the discs equivalent of Leonardo da Vinci in his attic. To be fair, he is there voluntarily and could probably leave if he really wanted to. The inhabitants of the city he rules have no idea what exactly his sexuality is and speculate about. Him having a potential affair with the ruler of another country is speculated, but there is zero proof for that and to be honest, common fanon is that he is most definitely not straight and likely more closer to gay or asexual. As a ruler of the city there were several attempts to depose of him, including such ideas as summoning a dragon to be able crown someone as king, poisoning via arsenic-laced candles (Vetinari was able to identify the poison while halfway delirious) and on one notable occasion getting turned into a lizard. During one of these attempts he got shot, which results in him having to use a cane. Also, Vetinari really likes dogs.

I think it's funny that a paleontologist got the chance to name a new species of Tyrannosaurus and, rather than try to come up with something that matches the coolness of "T.rex," just gave it a Latinized version of a normal last name. (At least I'm assuming that's what happened.)
People have been trying to top T.rex's name with his other relatives for years - Murder Monster, Gore King, Dynamic Terror - and someone comes out here and says "How about Tyrannosaurus McElroy?"
Long live the reign of the Tyrant Lizard King and his older brother, the Tyrant Lizard Jim.

Superfam as Dinosaurs
with some input from the lovely @space-specs because between the two of us i am the one who knows dinosaurs
Clark- Tyrannosaurus Rex (literally mean “king tyrant lizard” and i think that bodes well for Lex not liking Clark. plus theyre big carnivores and iconic!)(i also have a lot of feelings connecting Dinosaur Train to Clark and his story -ketchup)
Tumblr media
Kara- Carnotaurus (she feels like a taurus. plus its a large theropod with little horns and i think its cute)
Tumblr media
Kon-  Compsognathus (theyre tiny and adorable little carnivores and we agree that kon should be small and mighty)
Tumblr media
Jon- Archaeopteryx (cute little feathered dinosaur. theyre considered to be the first bird, but theres some speculation over whether or not they could actually fly. and a jon without powers is very good soup)
Tumblr media
Lois- Dilophosaurus (we thought about a velociraptor or a raptor in general but this one fits and we love it)
Tumblr media
John Henry- Ankylosaurus (armored herbivore. need we say more)
Tumblr media
Nat- Dracopelta (theyre tiny armored dinosaurs who are thought to have been able to curn up into a ball like an armadillo. also absolutely adorable)
Tumblr media
Karen- Xenoceratops (their name means “alien spiked face” and the horns are a commonality between Kara and Karen. plus they look dope? and we wanted karen to be an herbivore that could still mess you up a la hippopotamuses)
Tumblr media
Kenan- Bellusaurus (we wanted Kenan to be the one sauropod, and the bellusaurus is very cute and quite small for a long-necked dinosaur. and bonus! they were found in China!)
Tumblr media
Otho- Rhamphorynchus (it’s a flying reptile and it looks like a rat. it fits her so well <3)
Tumblr media
Osul- Dimorphodon (also a small flying reptile, so he matches his twin, and while the two flying reptiles are different, they still do look similar)
Tumblr media
Jimmy- Iguanodon (theyre green coded and so is jimmy)
Tumblr media
Perry- Parasaurolophus (idk theyre my favorite shape of dino nugget and i dont think he’d want it any other way -ketchup)
Tumblr media
Cat- Troodon (specifically, this Cat is the one from Lois and Clark, so the feathers really make this match)
Tumblr media
Bibbo- Stegosaurus (do i really need to explain this one?)
Tumblr media
Lex- Pachycephalosaurus (theyre bald.)
Tumblr media
Mercy- Spinosaurus (pretty, dangerous, powerful, and fruity. also a fish eating dinosaur and one of my favorite theropods)
Tumblr media
Hope- Baryonyx (another lesbian. a water-based theropod and also big, powerful, and dangerous)
Tumblr media
The Eradicator- the dinosaur in the Batcave (its really funny. plus the batcave dino is an automated security system t-rex)

the miasaurus rex: king of my lizards
read on ao3
The Doctor has stood at the bedside of suffering before. He’s witnessed more deaths than he can count and confronted the fragility of life within almost everyone he’s ever loved, and carried that weight as guilt.
Now, he sits at the foot of his daughter’s hospital bed and everything is fine. Her cries have long since quieted, her tears dried. There’s a bright purple bandaid on the side of her jaw to match the violet of her wrist cast, and she’s perfectly safe. A bit giggly from the painkillers, but safe and smiling—not even in any pain. Yet his leftover fear is still twitching in his fingers.
A marker lands on the blanket between his knees. Navy against the sky-blue blanket.
“If you’re not too busy brooding a hole through the wall, we could use some help.”
He looks up and they’re staring at him: Mia with a fistful of markers and an expectant, closed-mouth smile, and Rose with a soft understanding in her eyes and an outstretched hand, beckoning him closer. Offering a distraction.
“We’re trying to recreate scenes from Prehistoric Planet, but our girl’s drawing hand is out of commission and anything more than a stick figure’s out of my league.”
(God, he loves her.)
“You know the dinosaurs, daddy,” Mia chirps, and his heart grows a few sizes at the soft whistle-y noise halfway through dinosaur—the little temporary lisp she’s had for a few days now after losing her first tooth. “You can draw them.”
She reaches over to press the pile of markers into his hands, and he scooches closer to join them at the head of the bed, the three of them pressed shoulder-to-shoulder. Mia drops her temple against his bicep and pokes at the green marker.
“That one,” she says. “The Tyrannosaurus Rex is green.”
Unfortunately, most of what they’ve drawn so far is green, and he can’t tell what any of them are supposed to be, let alone which one is the T-Rex. He loves his wife beyond words, but she’s not exactly an artist.
“That may be,” he tells their daughter, uncapping the pink marker and hunching over her cast, “but the Miasaurus Rex is pink.”
She giggles and her arm shakes; he accidentally streaks ink across his own palm. When she settles, he starts to draw, doing his best to invent a new species of dinosaur out of pink marker lines, impossible to make smooth on the bumpy plaster. For a few, long moments, everything is quiet. And then—
“T-Rex: King of the Tyrant Lizards,” Mia whispers, her voice full of the kind of drama that only a six-year-old can effortlessly wield. (She’s become quite fascinated recently with the etymology of dinosaur names, which is even cuter than it sounds. In his completely objective opinion, of course.) “Mummy, what does my name mean?”
“‘Mine.’ It means ‘mine,’” Rose says, but she glances up at the Doctor from where she’s been weaving a small braid into Mia’s hair, and her eyes say ‘ours.’
“King of My Lizards?” Mia asks after a thoughtful pause, her eyebrows scrunching together.
“That’s right, my sweet girl.” Rose finishes off the braid with a hair-tie from her wrist and tucks it behind her ear. “They’re all yours.”
“So much so, in fact, that no one else even knows about them,” the Doctor adds, capping the pink marker and reaching for the black, ready to give the very first Miasaurus Rex some eyes and a smile. The body, while clearly some type of dinosaur, is a bit wobbly and unsymmetrical, and one side of the head is significantly flatter than the other as though the poor creature had been dropped on its head. (Given the circumstances, he thinks, he’s done fairly well.)
“I’ll just have to grow up and find them, then,” Mia says, so decided and matter-of-fact that for a moment, it’s impossible not to believe that she’ll someday discover a dinosaur that never lived.
The Doctor glances up from his in-progress invention of a species to meet his wife’s eyes, bright and warm, sharing in his awe that this brilliant little girl is theirs. They get to love her. They get to watch her grow and laugh and sit captivated by his stories of meeting real dinosaurs during his years of time and space.
They chose her name because it means mine. But they sit all squished together in her hospital bed, creating a new dinosaur on her wrist cast and weaving braids into her loose hair and he thinks that no, ‘Mia’ does not mean mine. It means ours.

Tyrannosaurus, the tyrant lizard king, has been one of the most well-studied prehistoric organisms ever. It’s only been known for a little over 100 years, but due to its charismatic value and badassery, it was an immediate star to the public and academics alike. Even though many other extinct organisms have been known for far longer than Tyrannosaurus, T. rex has become the most well-studied extinct genus or species with almost 20,000 citations in google scholar alone. New Tyrannosaurus remains are found every so often but finding new ways to analyze old specimens is the way to go to find out all one can about this impressive beast. A brand-new study lit up the three-dimensional networks of blood vessels that ate its way through the face of Sue the Tyrannosaurus and found some unnerving information about the animal’s senses, facial coverings, and evolution.
