A Staff Pick Decorative Sunday
I recently came across a video a farmer took of one of their pigs gently tearing out a bunch of flowers. The video then cut to the interior of a barn, where the pig lay sleeping in its nest, bunches of dried yellow wild flowers surrounding her. None of the farmers other pigs did this. Human animals are driven to adorn their spaces. But some humans are driven to elevate that endeavor from decoration to high art.
There are many potential challenges when it comes to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting artist-built environments, that is, environments that “involve an individual significantly transforming their surroundings into an exceptional, multifaceted work of art.” For over fifty years, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI has been dedicated to preserving these unique spaces. The ultimate goal is to preserve these works in their original contexts/sites, but issues ranging from changes in property ownership to exposure to the elements sometimes requires alternative preservation strategies.
Sublime Spaces & Visionary Worlds: Built Environments of Vernacular Artists, published in 2007 by the Princeton Architectural Press (New York, New York) with the Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, WI) seeks to “provide a lasting record of the art these men and women have created and situate the environments within historical and cultural continuums.” The publication was in conjunction with an exhibition presented June 2007-January 2008. Curator Leslie Umberger authored the book, with contributions by Erika Doss, Ruth DeYoung Kohler, Lisa Stone, and Jane Bianco. While viewing images of these spectacular constructed worlds can’t replicate the experience of being immersed within them, this kind of documentation can help carry the spirit of these artists forward in time, even if their work ends up being ephemeral.

The cover image features The Forevertron, by Dr. Evermore (Tom Every, 1938-2020) located at the Evermore Sculpture Park in North Freedom, Wisconsin. It is the largest scrap metal structure in the world and weighs 300 tons. See image descriptions to learn more about the artworks.

Week 3 Part 2
Last week we were given Part 3 of Project 1, something we have now finished. Unlike the first two portions of Project 1 Part 3 didn't involve us designing anything or getting out our drawing tablets. Rather part 3 was designed to force us to get out into our community and see things in ways we hadn't before.
Part 3 was called "Vernacular Design." Now, traditionally, vernacular design relates to architecture specific to the region it comes from. A quick explanation from Wikipedia says this, "Vernacular architecture usually serves immediate, local needs, is constrained by the materials available in its particular region, and reflects local traditions and cultural practices."
However, for the purposes of this project our instructor gave us his broader definition of vernacular, "the re-purposing of something in your environment in a new or creative way." For example, an old bathtub that has been re-purposed into an outdoor planter. Or a candy box that's been turned into a sketchbook.
In the space of a week we were to go out into our community and find 20 everyday example of creatively repurposed items.
I won't post all of my photos but here are some fun ones. . . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From a guitar that's been turned into a chair (for a 3D design project, not my work but a colleagues), to tackle boxes that act as art cases, to storage bins turned into stray cat houses.
I appreciate the opportunity the assignment gave me to step back from the computer and explore my world with a new way of looking.
I do not know if anyone will get much out of this post but maybe it will encourage you to look at all the unique ways people use and reuse things in everyday life.

KNIGHT OF SWORDS (RX), 3 OF SWORDS, THE TOWER (RX)
Pile 1, ya'll are slow and thoughtful speakers. You are very mindful about what you say, and you are very aware of the power words can carry, hence why you speak with caution. Your voice may be thin and reedy by how many swords cards are here. It could also be high-pitched but more mature sounding. By the way you talk, people perceive you as an intellectual. Do you like poetry? You have a big, almost poetic vernacular. Your words sound almost melancholic. You speak with a lot of emotion and are very forthcoming with what you feel. You may vent a lot or express your emotions through writing. I feel like you're a great storyteller. You know just how much inflection and drama to put into your voice to draw attention and establish an atmosphere. I also think you use your words to heal. People find your voice very soothing and your words important. They trust that you would speak the truth. You may play therapists with a lot of people. People like to vent to you and sometimes seek your counsel because its likely you've felt what they have at one point.

౿૮꒰ྀི pile 2 ๑◞꒱ა
2 OF WANDS (RX), THE EMPEROR, 4 OF CUPS (RX)
Prominent fire energy here Pile 2. The emperor sticks out most to me. Your voice may be deeper than most, almost carrying masculine qualities (nothing wrong with that, I loooovvvee deep voices. Ya'll are natural seductresses). It could also be that there are a few men in this pile. Your voice is perceived as commanding and powerful. You mean what you say, and you don't usually speak if you have nothing substantial to say. People are likely more to do what you say or take your advice. Unlike pile 1, it's almost hard to read the tone of your voice. It may sometimes be perceived as flat and bored, only because you don't like to be forthcoming with your emotions. People want to confide in you because they find you to be a wise and honest speaker. I think you can easily hurt people if you don't watch your words, and that may contribute to witholding your advice sometimes. You dont sugarcoat, which is a good thing. People think you keep a lot to yourself, but your words are rich in wisdom and meaning.
⊰᯽⊱┈───── ✧
౿૮꒰ྀི pile 3 ๑◞꒱ა
THE EMPRESS, 4 OF CUPS, THE WORLD
Pile 3 I think people perceive your voice as being very soft and feminine. You have a good way of speaking to people. People think you speak with eloquence and proper etiquette. Your voice may be high-pitched, but not childlike. You may be apathetic to other people's attention because you're so focused on what you got going on. It's like people would love to hear you speak and hear what you have to say, but you prefer to keep to yourself. People may daydream about starting a conversation with you. People may assume that you come from an affluent family and you've received a well-rounded education that's made your vocabulary and way with words so prim and proper. You're a good public speaker and sound quite charming. People feel you have a lot of knowledge to share. I think your voice could be especially helpful in your career.
⊰᯽⊱┈───── ✧
౿૮꒰ྀི pile 4 ๑◞꒱ა
5 OF CUPS REVERSED (RX), 2 OF PENTACLES, 6 OF SWORDS, KNIGHT OF WANDS
I think your voice can vary in your mood. It can go from low pitch to high pitch, and people can tell what you're feeling when you speak. I see you going through a personal transition and wanting to change peoples perceptions of you. I think you may have sounded quiet in the past. Maybe you were going through a hard time and were withdrawing from most people, but you want to come back louder and stronger as ever. You're releasing things from the past that may have stifled you and your voice. You'll be saying whats on your mind and saying them with confidence and energy. You want to be more social and outgoing, and I see you succeeding! You're trying to find more balance in your life and going on new adventures. Possibly, you'll be traveling soon. Your voice now sounds young and brims with passion. I think your voice revitalizes people, gives them high energy, and is infectious when you laugh or sing.

Ana Mendieta
Cuban-born performance and multi-media visual artist Ana Mendieta died in 1985 at the age of 36, leaving behind a massive collection of un-exhibited works. Now on view at London’s Hayward Gallery is “Traces,” her first UK retrospective, in which slides of these pieces reveal an untold career.
Born in Cuba in 1948, Mendieta was sent to Iowa by her parents at the age of 13 to escape the communist regime of Fidel Castro. In a subsequent search for identity and belonging, Mendieta turned her attention to the Earth and the female body as her core subjects. Though documented across a wide breadth of medums-photography, film, performance, sculpture-they were, in essence, her only tools. Mendieta developed a visual vernacular of feminine forms through experimentation with materials such as blood, wood and stone. In her famous “Siluetas” (Silhouettes) series, created between 1973 and 1981, she left imprints or outlines in the earth with her body, sometimes adding ritualistic adornments of flowers or fire to those markings.
Mendieta died in New York in 1985 after falling from the 34th-floor apartment she shared with her husband, the sculptor Carl Andre. Some suspect Andre of having thrown Mendieta from the window, though he was acquitted after a three-year trial. In the last room of the exhibition, the duality of the show’s title, which references both the marks made by her body in the earth and the work left behind after her death, is drawn out to a haunting degree. Presented alongside notebooks, postcards, and other archival materials, several white pillars are set up as projection screens for old-fashioned slide projectors showing the un-exhibited works. Each pillar is marked with the year in which the works shown there were made.
