Not to be a huge nerd about Miguel again but I was listening the the ATSV soundtrack and I actually had no idea that, besides the main track that has That One Specific Soundbite That's A Meme Now, Miguel actually has another song, one that even has his voicelines in it as part of the track
It just has such a melancholy feel to it? A lot of the lyrics are confident, such as 21 Savage's entire verse about breaking chains, building a house starting from just a brick, having a family to feed, being a leader, having goals everyone isnt built for, but this is also repeatedly contrasted with the chorus, which, when paired in context of the movie, becomes almost remorseful, burdened. In the presence of the chorus, many of these lines, to me at least, seem less like genuine confidence and swagger and more of a self soothing reassurance
I can't be the one here givin' up ((because he feels he has absolutely no choice but to keep working and moving forward at all costs. Like he said, he's given up too much to stop now))
I'm not the one here givin' up ((no other option but to make his enemies submit. Any anomalies or obstacles have to be the one to submit, because he doesn't have that option, there is too much at stake))
Time heals all, but I can't feel what it was ((he has to numb himself not just to his current actions, but the memories and longing of his past. He had to let go of his desire to have his family again and went completely in the opposite direction, becoming laser focused on his mission and less on being human, also just ouch, this line actually kind of feels like it's being sarcastic or ironic or something. Miguel is obviously still going through stages of grief and acting out of trauma but he's convinced himself he's moved on and all of his actions are logical and mechanical when he's actually significantly suffering mentally and emotionally))
If you were me, you wouldn't give up ((he's really one of those "burdened with great purpose" characters. When you think about it, what would be happening if Miguel and Lyla hadn't developed the dimensional watches and started going around helping people and forming this network? How many more people and lifeforms would be gone? Not only is he at least in the film's own canon one of the only people who could have accomplished this sort of thing, but his own emotional investments and past actions and the consequences he suffered also cement his dedication to his mission. 'If you were me, if you knew what I knew and felt what I felt, you would understand'))
Anyways maybe I'm overanalyzing, and art as a medium is absolutely interpretive, but I was surprised I hadn't really heard or seen anything around specifically about this being his actual true theme or the messaging or whatever. I'm just practically observing this man like a specimen in the wild at this point. He loves his family. He loved them so much he literally stole someone else's and lied to them and accidentally got them killed with his selfishness. He's consumed with grief and compensates by being a workaholic desperately trying to fix things. He's got a temper and throws trashcans at teens and swears and gets huffy. He (at least in concept art) has slippers that a kid he rescued drew bunnies on and he actually wears them. He manhandled and chokeslammed a teenage boy and held onto him so hard he tore his suit and left actual claw gouges in the kid's shoulder while literally leaning down to tell him directly in his ear that he was a mistake, because if physical force wasn't going to make this kid stop the next option was to literally break his spirit, like, truly Miguel is a complex individual but ALSO he's my poor little meow meow that I would have sex with

TBB as Taylor Swift Songs - Song + Character Analysis(Part Two)
(Part one) (Part Three)
Hello there.
Okay so I actually spent so long on this one and I struggled to find a song for this character for like forever but then I remembered this post And It narrowed down my options by a lot, and I eventually landed on this.
Tech - Forever and Always
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I realized how this song fit him, I went feral. Get tissues, here we go.
'Cause it seems to me, this thing is breaking down We almost never speak I don't feel welcome anymore Baby what happened? Please tell me
'Cause one second it was perfect, now you're halfway out the door
Okay so this is mostly about his relationship with his twin brother Crosshair. How their whole family seemed fine one moment and the next thing he knows order 66 happens and Crosshair starts to act weird, differently than Tech knows him to be.
Was I out of line? Did I say something way too honest, made you run and hide
For Tech this line references that he doesn't always understand social cues, and as such sometimes says things that are true, yet hurtful without him intending to. Such as when he hurt Omega in The Crossing and couldn't understand what he did wrong as all he did was tell the truth.
So here's to everything coming down to nothing Here's to silence, that cuts me to the core Where is this going? Thought I knew for a minute, but I don't anymore
And this is when Crosshair has completely betrayed them. He files a counter report. He shoots Wrecker. He hunts them down. Their entire relationship has crumbled into nothing. Tech had thought that they were immune to the effects of the chips but then Crosshair is clearly being controlled by his.
And I stare at the phone, he still hasn't called And then you feel so low you cant feel nothing at all
And the main reason I chose this song is because, as the post I linked earlier pointed out, Tech frequently checks their comms to see if Crosshair commed them. When Echo left he frequently checked to see if Echo commed. And Tech didn't understand either of their choices but he had to respect them anyways. He might have missed them but its fine. It's a part of life to move on from change.
You didn't mean it baby, I don't think so
Oh back up, baby, back up Did you forget everything? Back up, baby, back up Did you forget everything?
And then Crosshair reveals that he had his chip removed. The entire batch spent the entire time thinking that Crosshair was under it's effects and that if they got the chip removed it would be okay again. Tech had spent so much time building a scanner to remove the chip and the rug gets pulled out underneath him.
And Tech is the first to accept and Acknowledge that Crosshair has always been severe and unyielding so maybe this is who he really is. But then hes the first to believe that Crosshair turned on the Empire, hes the first to insist they have to go back for him.

The next day, you and the Sullys woke up, exhausted but relieved to have slept in a real bed - even though you had shared yours with Kiri, which neither of you minded. Jake gave you his speech about respecting their traditions and people, and had especially looked at Lo'ak when he told you to behave - which made you discreetly laugh. So you and the siblings were on the road to the beach, ready to take your first steps into a completely new world, different from what you knew.
"I hope you drown." Kiri said playfully to her brother, nudging his shoulder to annoy him.
"If it's after you I don't care."
As you watched the two idiots make a scene in front of you while holding Tuk's hand, you couldn't help but laugh at their ridiculous insults. They may not be related by blood but they sure acted like they were. Sometimes it really fascinated you and you couldn't look away from their whining, secretly choosing a side to support.
"Don't you feel hot ?"
Neteyam's voice snapped you out of your analysis, causing you to jump and almost stumble headlong into the sand. Like a deer caught in the headlights, you almost broke your neck as you turned your gaze to his handsome face that was smiling at your nonsenses. It was cute.
"No- I'm fine. I'm really good." you repeated, not knowing what else to say to ease his concerns.
Doubtful, he looked at your getup, skeptical before reaching for the strange top you were wearing that covered your entire upper body.
"I've always seen you in that but never questioned it, since that's what father's friend wears too. But I can't help but think it must be uncomfortable, isn't it?"
"No. I'm used to it. But I'm not used to wearing your clothes. I feel…exposed ?"
Neteyam did not understand what you meant by 'exposed'. Which was quite understandable since he had grown up seeing women and men wearing nothing by your standards. His own clothes, as well as those of all the Na'vis, only covered their private parts. So seeing you show up on a beach in a baggy t-shirt and cargo pants that looked way too big for you was one of the reasons why Neteyam would never consider you his sister, unlike Tuk. You were just too different.
Shrugging, he did not question your choice of words and continued on his way by your side, sometimes asking you questions such as 'did you sleep well ?' or 'what do you think of this place ?', or interfering in the passionate discussions Tuk was having with you. So, even though the walk was not that long, you had the impression that it lasted only a few seconds. For the second time, in a short period of time, you had talked to your crush and said more than two sentences. Maybe this new place was going to work out for you after all.
Tumblr media
"Look at them, they're worse than babies."
"Can't even stay three minutes underwater."
No, you were wrong, you were going to hate this place. Eywa, you already hated it. When you arrived on the beach, almost panting from the heat since you were used to the coolness of the lab, the two boys from yesterday and the pretty girl were waiting for you, half sunk into the water. While she had welcomed you warmly, her brother, if you had understood correctly what Lo'ak had told you last night with passionate insults, had only rolled his eyes. You were sure you had heard him mocking the Sully's and were selfishly glad to have gone under the radar. But you couldn't stay invisible for long.
"You ! What are you doing on the shore ?" the boy with the bun had called you in a scathing voice, drawing everyone's attention to you. "You think that you're too good to learn our way ?"
"Ao'nung !" his sister chided him, a frown on her face. Slowly, she swam until she was within reach of you and started a conversation with you, surely trying to make you feel comfortable. "Hi, my name is Tsireya, I'm sorry my brother can be a skxawng sometimes. Why don't you come with us ?"
You blushed and looked at her pretty face, then at her hand that was extended to you, urging you to take it and join her into the water.
Snapping out of your trance, you shook your head at full speed, moving away from the waves that licked the sand beneath your feet. "Maybe later… Thanks."
"Fine. We'll wait, don't worry. If you need help you can call me, I'll be right there."
You blushed again but did not answered. Eywa, she was so nice and pretty. Did you sounded rude ? But from what little you saw, she seemed to be understanding, the opposite of her brother, who you knew was looking at you with a nasty look from where he was standing. You couldn't hear what he was saying, but from his friend's laugh and Lo'ak's look you were sure you did not want to know.
So, from a distance, you watched them practicing diving underwater. They did not move or swim, they just tried to see their current predisposition. Not surprisingly, Lo'ak and Tuk were the first to get their heads out of the water to take a deep breath. Always, when they did so, Lo'ak would turn to you to see if you were still watching them. When he saw you laughing at him, which you always did, he would make faces at you before being called to order, which made you laugh even more.
Sometimes Neteyam would pop his head out of the water. In those moments you felt like you were going to explode because of how hot your face was. But you could blame it on the heat, couldn't you ? On the other hand, you could not look away from the spectacle that was offered to you every time he emerged from the waves. His skin glistening, his eyes shining, his hair dripping with sea water. He really was a sight. Fortunately, he did not see you scrutinizing him like the Nantangs scrutinized their prey. At least you thought so, because Neteyam did notice the way you looked away whenever he caught you looking at him. He did not mind though, he loved the attention…
As for Kiri, you could not help but feel amazed and impressed when she was the last one out of the water. No matter what she did, she always succeeded, whether it was her Ikniyama, something as complicated as healing, and now freediving. Part of you knew you should not feel this way since she was your best friend but you could not help but feel…jealous. She was different from you in so many ways and was proving it once again right here. Even away from home, she seemed to be a genius and learned faster than anyone else. And you could only watch from afar, sitting on the edge of this beach, insecure.
The morning had gone by quite quickly and it was soon enough time to eat. One by one, the Sully came out of the water, soaked, exhausted, out of breath, but above all hungry. Immediately, Lo'ak walked towards you and, sensing the stupidity coming, you got up at full speed, trying to escape the mischievous boy. Nothing on his face gave away his intentions, not even a smile. But you knew. You knew him so well.
Obviously you were not quick enough, because in one swift move Lo'ak had jumped on your back, throwing you both to the ground. And, to your dismay, he was soaked.
"Get off of me moron!" you yelled, trying as best as you could to escape from his wet arms as he took great pleasure in soaking your clothes with sea water.
"Why should we be the only one who are wet huh ?" he said in a defying tone, muffling your protests by putting his hand on your mouth. Unfortunately fro him, you were a quick thinker.
"Ah ! That's disgusting !" he cried out and took his hand away from your mouth at the wet sensation on his palm.
You grinned and laughed out loud, not caring about being soaked anymore. His face was priceless. The kind of 'bitch what the fuck' face. It really was a 'Lo'ak thing' to do. Rolling her eyes at your childish games, Kiri took the matter into her own hands by grabbing her brother tail and pulling on it until he let you go. And all of this under the three Metkayina's eyes. Neteyam was embarrassed. He took his little sister hand and walked away from the scene, acting like he did not know you.
Tumblr media
"Fish."
"Yes, it's the local dietary regime." Neytiri said, putting a big plate in the middle of the circle that you all were forming as you were sitting on the ground. "There's not much meat around here, unless you go in the forest behind the village. But apparently, it's dangerous."
"What can be more dangerous than Palulukan ?" Lo'ak scoffed before eating a piece of fish.
"We're trying to fit in, so just eat your fish and stop complaining." Jake said as he too took a piece of fish from the wooden plate. "Don't make this harder than it already is."
"Yes sir."
Silence reigned for most of the meal, everyone lost in their own thoughts, or simply focusing on their meal. When no one was looking at you, you and Lo'ak exchanged glances full of meaning. After years of being around each other, you had managed to create a language of your own, one that even Kiri found difficult to understand at times. Sometimes it only took a glance for you to understand what the other wanted. It was a habit that you had taken to avoid Lo'ak being reprimanded by his father for having breathed a little too loudly.
Sensing the tension in the atmosphere, Jake cleared his throat and moved awkwardly in his seat, speaking up.
"So… What did you guys do this morning ?"
"We practiced breath-hold diving for as long as we could." Neteyam replied with a nonchalant shrug. He knew the subject was going to be brought up and their father wanted to know about their progress.
"So what ? Are you doing okay ?"
"Yes. Me and Kiri lasted the longest." Neteyam replied without missing a beat, proud of his completions. Obviously, his father had to know about it.
"And Lo'ak also did very well for a first time !" you interjected, hoping to get your friend out of a situation that was already starting to look bad. "It's normal to have some difficulties when trying something new-" your voice got smaller and smaller as Jake looked you in the eyes, surely looking for the lie in your voice. But he couldn't find one, because even though Lo'ak's performance was not as good as his siblings', in your eyes he was doing really well. "…right ?" you squealed, looking down.
"Yes. As long as you're trying. But don't stagnate, tomorrow I want to hear that you made great progresses." he said, pointing his finger at his youngest son, who didn't look up once in his direction. Jake turned his attention to you and asked, "What about you ?"
"She did just fine." Lo'ak interrupted, looking into your eyes as yours widened at his lie. Out of the corner of your eyes you saw Tuk holding back the words that wanted to come out of her mouth while Kiri and Neteyam froze. All the Sully children knew that you had not even approached the water. But they all continued with their meal, deciding that it was better for you to avoid Jake's disappointment. Neteyam and Lo'ak were used to it, Kiri had never been reprimanded, nor Tuk. But they knew that if you, of all people, was reprimanded by Jake, it would mean loud cries and heavy heart for the rest of the day. If they all knew something about you, it was that you were… well, fragile.
Lo'ak gave you an 'I-got-you' look and you slightly nodded back, smiling and resuming eating your fish as Kiri engaged a conversation with her mother about her morning.
Tumblr media
"Gotta go back swimming." Lo'ak complained when his father disappeared behind a Marui, annoyed at the thought of spending time with those weird blue Na'vis again. He could not stand them, even more after he heard them talk about you this morning. They were disgustingly disrespectful, just because your tail was fluffy and your clothes not like theirs.
"I did not said that to save your ass, you really did good this morning." you said in a soft voice while playfully pushing him with your shoulder.
He pushed you away from him and muttered "You're embarrassing." Since the light was bright around you, you missed the way his freckles started to glow.
"Stop being babygirl material." the English words left your mouth before you could even think about it and you freckles glowed as you stopped in your tracks.
"What the- What does that even mean ?" he said, genuinely curious at the new expression. He was used to some English words and turn of phrase that you used but this one was a new one. He was pretty good at remembering the insults.
"Hum. It's like- I don't how to explain it." you shrugged, going back to walking, Lo'ak following behind you while rolling his eyes.
"If you don't know what that means don't use it."
"I know what that means !" you said, put out, " I just don't know how to explain it..."
"Then don't use it."
"Oh hush."
Soon enough you all arrived on the same beach as this morning and, to your dismay, you were feeling hotter than before. The ambient temperature was making your skin glistening with your sweat and your shirt was almost sticking to your body. You really hated it, here. You really should have stayed with Norm, in the labs, enjoying his company while experimenting on new things.
"You're coming ?" Kiri asked, side hugging you.
Well, whatever, you were going to be fine. You just needed to make some efforts to fit in. Your gaze wandered over your surroundings, and you saw Neteyam and Tuk diving into the water, Tsireya floating a bit farther away.
Something felt off but you could not pinpoint what it was.
"Hum. Yeah ? I guess than I can try..."
"I got you." Lo'ak said, his hand hovering over your back in case you needed help. He could tell that you were not feeling comfortable and that for some reasons you did not wanted to go in the water. But it was fine, he was just behind you, it would not let you get hurt on uncomfortable.
"As always." you chuckled nervously, trying to ease the wariness inside of your head that was preventing you from stepping into the water. "Don't let me drown. Hold me tight."
"It will depend on you."
"Ahah you're so funny."
"Come on we don't have all day !" Tuk complained, unhappy that she could not yet have fun in the water because of how slow you were.
Why would you do this to yourself when you could just sit quietly on the beach while watching them swim and have fun ?
"Come on crybaby." Lo'ak rolled his eyes, trying to push you further into the water. But you planted your feet on the sand, resisting and not budging. Frowning at your resistance, he tried another way. Encircling your hips with his arms, he carried you in order to walk further into the water. You squealed and tried to resist, immediately clinging to him once you realized that him letting you go would mean that you would end up in the cold water.
"Don't you dare putting me down or walking further into the water ! My tail is sensitive, more than yours, it's very cold." you said, putting the emphasis on 'very'. And it was true. Despite not knowing were you came from, you still knew quite some things about your body. And one thing that you learn quick enough was that your tail was really sensitive. As if each hair on it was just some kind of ultra sensitive sensor.
"No my tail is sensitive." You heard someone make fun of you and the minute after your body and your head were immersed into the water, your clothes and your tail soaked. As if that was not enough, since you were holding into Lo'ak's neck, said boy fell on top of you, crushing you under his weight in the short time he had been off balance. Your mouth opened in shock and you swallowed water, coughing up bubbles. Before you could panic unnecessarily since you could still touch the bottom, Lo'ak pulled you to the surface.
You coughed and spat out the water that had entered your lungs, not feeling as hot as you did before. As you caught your breath, slumped against your friend's chest, you heard laughter a few feet away. Now you knew what was off. Tsireya's brother and his friend were not here when you arrived. They were missing. And now you understood why.
"Look at their faces !"
"Whoops, my bad. You do not belong in the water, children of the forest, especially you, human-freak."
You did not look up, your eyes round and your breath short, still shocked by what had just transpired. You felt like you were making a big deal out of nothing, but you could not just ignore what had just happened since your mind and thoughts were too messy. Being pushed into the water had affected you, sure, but what had caused you to be so shaken up was the violence of the actions and words you had just been victims of. Did they hate you that much ?
"I'm going to fucking kill them…" you heard Lo'ak mutter. He tightened his grip on your waist before pulling your body away from his, gently handling you to his sister whose mouth was wide open, shocked by the events. Striding in their direction, he pushed Ao'nung violently once he was within arms reach. "What's your fucking problem ?!"
Before the situation could get any worse, Neteyam, who had been watching from afar what had just happened, swam as quickly as possible to hold back his brother. "Lo'ak ! Stop it !"
"No ! I'm not stopping anything, you saw what he did to us-"
"It's fine !" Neteyam grabbed his brother's shoulder, dragging him away from the boys who were making fun of you just before his eyes. Lo'ak, in disbelief, quickly turned around to look at his brother, ready to protest, but he was interrupted once again.
"Look, nobody's hurt. There's no need to make a big deal out of it. Just...let it slide okay ?"
Now Lo'ak was shocked by his brother's reaction. It's true that he did not return your feelings and had no reason to defend you, but it was more than that. It was a matter of pride. Did he not even consider you a friend ? Or even his siblings' best friend ?
"You're kidding me right ?"
"..."
"Wow, you reached a whole new level of dickhead. And you're supposed to watch over us ? Don't make me laugh."
Lo'ak swam back to you, guiding your shivering form to the shore with Kiri's help. And as if the whole afternoon was not bad enough, Jake and the chief of the village showed up on the beach,  probably to examine the progress you had made. You could not fight here, in front of the chief of the Metkayina's but above all in front of Jake. And Ao'nung definitely knew that because he was laughing out loud at Lo'ak's face, acting like you all were good friends.
"Everything's good here ?" Jake asked, looking between the three of you and the others in the water.
"Yes." Ao'nung answered, smiling big.
"Such a sxkawng..."
"Lo'ak !" Jake yelled, having clearly heard Lo'ak's insult. "Behave and go back to training."
She looked at you, worried, not knowing if she should return to you to help you or give in to her father's wishes.
Lo'ak rolled his eyes and stayed on the beach next to you as Kiri was slowly going back into the water. She looked at you, worried, not knowing if she should return to you to help you or give in to her father's wishes. You nodded in order to reassure her, silently telling her that you were going to be fine. Unfortunately, you knew that you could not just stand on the beach when Jake was standing a few feet away from you. Especially not after lying to him during lunch break.
"Don't do it if you don't want to..." your friend whispered to you, trying to be discreet enough to not be heard by his father.
"I don't have any choice, he's watching us." you whispered back, frowning as you made your way towards the sea, watching fearfully the water submerge your body little by little. You almost lost your balance when your tail, who got heavier due to the water, sank into the wave. It wasn't like the Omatikayan's or Metkayinan's tails. Yours was obviously not fitting into the water. At least the Sully's tail was slender. But yours was heavy. You were not used to feel that amount of heaviness on your back.
"Don't worry, I got you." Fortunately, Lo'ak prevented you from falling - once again, by holding your waist, trying to make you stand up straight. At least in front of his father. He did not wanted you to be reprimanded by him, it would suck.
"Great. Good work, see you tonight." Jake nodded, satisfied, and left after Tonowari, leaving you all silent into the water. You carefully in Lo'ak's waited until As soon as he was out of sight, you hurried up to the shore, tripping, head low, embarrassed upon hearing the mocking laughter of the two Metkayina's boys.
You really hated this place.
Tumblr media
Your tail took hours to dry. You tried to absorb the water with a weird towel that Tsireya, the nice sister, gave you, but it only helped a little. Because when it dried, oh Eywa, you wanted to cry. Your once beautiful shaggy and soft tail that you took care of was full of knots, everywhere.
And now you were really crying. Neytiri and Kiri was trying to remove the knots with wooden brushes and comb and it hurt. It hurt like hell. While you were just suffering, Lo'ak was kind enough to turn his head away from you when the need to laugh was too strong, but overall he was just looking at you with a blank a face. You knew for a fact that he was thinking about how he could get back to them. A 'Lo'ak thing' to do. Or maybe he was just trying to show some sympathy - which he obviously could not do.
While looking at him, a weird feeling suddenly flooded your body. You felt...hot. Strangely, you had the impression that you could still feel the lingering sensation of his body against yours. His breath on the top of your head and his warm, comforting embrace. When did he become so muscular, so 'adult looking' ? Eywa, he was your friend. You best friend. Just a friend. You shook your head and slapped your cheeks to get your mind out of the gutter. But the Kiri and her mother could tell that something was troubling you sine your tail was wagging between their hands, preventing them from helping you out with it.
As you were still crying your eyes out, overwhelmed, whining whenever Lo'ak was humming 'crybaby', Neteyam walked inside the Marui. He scanned the room with his eyes, his gaze landing on your glowing freckles and glistening face. Smiling, he made his way toward you, but was quickly stopped by a hand on his shoulder, gripping him firmly and preventing him from going further.
"We need to talk."
You all stopped what you were doing to look at the duo in the middle of the room, sensing the air get tense. The look on Lo'ak's face did not bode well. Or maybe it was just his 'bitch resting face'. In any case, Neteyam seemed just as surprised as you and simply looked at him, silently questioning his intentions. But Lo'ak did not answered nor budge, he only tightened his grip around his brother's shoulder and insisted, narrowing his eyes.
"Right now."
Lo'ak did not wait for his brother's response and dragged him out of the tent by force, leaving you, girls, wondering about what just happened. Neytiri was used to them going away to discuss 'private' things.
"Boys." Kiri huffed, resuming her previous actions by carefully stroking your wiggling tail. You yelped as Neytiri simply shrugged at the boys antics, going back to brushing your tail, trying to untangle a particularly strong knot.
"Stay put."
Oh Eywa, you were going to spend your night here, tortured by their unmerciful hands.
Tumblr media
"I think that I already told you to go and talk to her." Lo'ak said to his brother once they were far enough from the Marui, frowning, angry.
"About what ? Are you getting worked up because of what happened this afternoon ?"
"I don't give a fuck about what happened this afternoon. Just wait and see. I'm talking about her feelings for you. You think that just because we moved you can start to talk to her, acting like a charming prince ? Do you have feelings for her ? Do you even consider her like a friend ?"
HIssing, Neteyam shoved his brother's shoulder, pushing him away from him. He did not look happy; his ears were pinned to his head and he was baring his teeth, a low growl emitting from his chest.
"Don't tell me what to do."
"Oh so you're angry at me when I'm speaking the truth but don't react when those sxkawng basically attack us ?"
"I'm trying to protect you ! I'm supposed to watch over you, not her !" Neteyam hissed again, shoving his brother's chest with his finger at every words he said. "You can't go and fight for a girl when we are supposed to fit in and not cause any troubles !"
"A girl ? Huh, a girl." Lo'ak shook his head, obviously disappointed with his brother before nodding, shrugging his shoulders and taking a few steps back, hands in the air, as if giving up. His expression darkened and it was his turn to poke his brothers chest with his finger. "If I see you smile at her, laugh with her, let her think that something's possible between you two, I'm going to punch you in the face. I don't care that you are my brother, or a mighty warrior, I don't care if afterward you beat me to pulp or if mom and dad reprimand me. Stay. Away. From her."
Neteyam ran his hand through his hair and laughed, incredulous and annoyed at his little brother's ridiculous behavior. He could not wrap his head around the idea that his brother was willing to fight with him over some enamored girl who could not see that he was obviously not interested in her. "Just for a girl ?"
"That girl spent more time with me than you did. She protected me physically and verbally more than you did. So yeah, I would do that for a girl."
As Neteyam was, out of pure rage, about to tell Lo'ak what he really thought about you, tell him things which would definitely broke your heart if you heard them and start a fight between him and his brother, a voice interrupted them.
"Boys ? What's going on."
They kept silent, only looking at each other with their ears still pinned to their heads, their eyes shining with unsaid things. Lo'ak was the first one to step back. "Nothing sir." He respectfully greeted his father and headed back to their Marui.
"Neteyam ?"
"Nothing... How was your day ?"
Tumblr media
The eclipse had darkened the sky for a while now and the whole village was asleep, the light of the torches extinguished by the strong night winds coming right from the ocean. Looking around you and once you were sure that everyone was asleep, you got up and got out of the bed, being careful not to wake Kiri. Tiptoeing out of the Marui, bouncing on the net under your feet and laughing softly, you headed for the beach.
You could not continue to be a burden to the family that had taken you in and brought you with them. Tonight, despite the reassuring words of Kiri and Tuk, you could not even look at Jake in the eyes, let alone in his direction. You were so ashamed that you had to continue lying when you did not even dare to step into the water since your mishap. Not to mention the fact that your crush had seen the whole thing unfold. He had seen you come out of the water soaked to the skin, with your tail between your legs. You must have looked pathetic. But you were determined to change. So you thought that, maybe, you could start by desensitizing your tail to the coldness of the water and try to find your balance, even when it seemed to have doubled in weight.
Once on the beach, you walked with long, determined strides toward the waves that stretched across the sand before stopping at a reasonable distance.
"You can do it."
Taking a deep breath, you slowly approached the water, putting both feet in and trying to dip the tip of your tail. But instead you jumped and took two steps back. The water was freezing. Even more so than during the day.
"It's fine. It's gonna help."
You stepped forward again, ignoring the tremor in your hands and the sweat that was starting to run down your back.
You can't do it.
"I can do it."
Your thoughts were no longer clear and, even if you tried, you could not ignore that voice in your head. The world seemed to be spinning around you and a vice was compressing your chest, preventing you from breathing properly.
You can't do it.
"I- I can't do it." you stuttered, stumbling back and falling on the cold sand. Clenching your fist around the rough little minerals, you tried to clear your mind and make the void inside your head.
What a sight, you were pitiful. Every time you tried something new you would fail, destroy, deceive. No wonder Neteyam would never like you. You could not even step into the water. Intrusive thoughts were running in your head, making you feel like you were just incompetent. You were failing to see the beauty around you. The glowing fish and shining stars, bioluminescent flowers and corals. You were selfish, pessimist, close-minded, useless, weren't you ?
It was not unusual for you to feel like this. Like you were not in control of your own body, like someone was just talking inside your head and make fun of your failures. It started when you were young. You would hide under the desk in the labs or at the Avatar's sleeping quarters, breathing heavily and crying. But every time, he was there for you. He was holding your hand, hugging your side.
"Breath in, breath out."
The memory of Spider was as clear as the water in front of you. HIs laugh, is smile, his weird habits and clothes. Spider. Spider. Brother.
But no one was here to hold you or tell you sweet words. Not anymore. You were supported by your friends and yet, you still felt like you were alone. Fighting your demons alone, in your head. Just like you were on this beach. Without anyone around you. No sound, no warmth.
You tried, you really tried. Maybe not hard enough. But you knew that tonight, once again, you would fall asleep with a burning sensation in your eyes and an excruciating headache. You would wake up, the next day, smiley, pretending like nothing ever happened. Like you were not drowning in self-pity every night, getting closer to a bottomless abyss.
"Eywa, please, protect him."
Your Ikran landed just before you, nudging you, gently demanding you to stroke him. You smiled through your tears and hugged him, bathing in his warmth. He, at least, was not going to give up on you. He would stay by your side, forever.

Lyric analysis of Hoziers “Too Sweet”
"To Sweet" is a newly published song, released in March 2024 by the Irish singer and songwriter Hozier. There are many theories circulating on the internet concerning the lyrics of the piece, which describe the incompatibility of two different personalities in a relationship. Some people claim that the song is a rejection song, while others think it shows the inner conflict of the lyrical "I," who thinks he’s not good or pure enough to devote himself to a relationship with the lyrical "you."
In the following analysis, the song will be examined verse by verse to explore its true meaning.
Disclaimer: This is just my interpretation of the lyrics, and other opinions and ideas are welcome!
In the first verse, the lyrical "I" shows that he has bad habits and is aware of it ("can’t be said I’m an early bird, it’s ten o’clock before I say a word"). At the same time, he is confused or rather amazed by the lyrical "you's" discipline ("baby I can never tell how do you sleep so well"). This first verse highlights that the lyrical "you" and "I" are polar opposites already, and their lifestyles don’t function together.
In the next verse, the lyrical "I" describes how the lyrical "you" tries to push him into a healthier lifestyle ("You keep telling me to live right, to go to bed before the daylight"), and he tries to do the same to her, convincing her to become a bit more like him ("Don’t you just wanna wake up dark as a lake, smelling like a bonfire, lost in the haze?"). In the next sentences, "if you’re drunk on life babe, I think that’s great," he again highlights that he is absolutely fine with her being positive, but they simply don’t work together. It’s like the lyrical "I" is saying: You’re "drunk on life" so positive and healthy and full of energy, but "I’ll take my whiskey neat," indicating he can’t match her energy.
With the line "I’ll take my whiskey neat" in the chorus, he again highlights his darker, more subtle view on life, which is the polar opposite of hers. Now the line "you’re too sweet for me" can be interpreted in a couple of different ways, but I like to believe that it’s his way of saying he doesn’t deserve his lover, that he feels like he’s not good enough for her. Like he’s almost afraid of turning her bitter like his coffee that he likes black (ref. "I’ll take […] my coffee black").
In this example, you can also see the clear contrast again that is shown throughout the entire text, between bitter coffee and too sweet. Two things that just don’t make sense together.
The fourth verse says: "the ground is where I go, I work late where I'm free from the phone," which sounds almost as if he is hiding from his partner. Maybe it’s the being so different and not having enough in common to feel completely comfortable in each other's presence.
"But you worry some, I know, But who wants to live forever babe?" This beginning of the pre-chorus once again highlights the difference between the partners. The lyrical "you" being so careful, being drunk on life instead of alcohol and guarding her mouth as if it’s heaven's gate, her body like the TSA, as the next verse reveals. And in contrast to that, the lyrical "I" with his life fast, die young attitude, no risk no fun behavior. ("who wants to live forever babe?")
The 6th and last verse shows how highly he thinks of her and that he isn’t judging her in any way ("you’re bright as the morning, soft as the rain, pretty as a vine, sweet as a grape") but the sweetness is simply not what he likes. In these sentences, he uses a grape or vine to describe her, which later turns into "you can sit in a barrel, baby I’ll wait," referring to the process of making wine, which turns sweet grapes into something more sour and alcoholic, how he wishes she was more like.
To conclude, I believe that this song is not intended to be a rejection song, at least not in a classical sense. He doesn’t reject her because he doesn’t like her, but because he feels he's not good enough for her, or at least he thinks so.

Asks Comp - 16/4
Tumblr media
I literally did not know The Baby Is You was a thing. To be welcomed back into the comic like this after four months is very on brand for Homestuck.
... and wow, its outro really does match the end of this song, doesn't it? That's even funnier than if he'd snuck some of Megalovania in there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ooh, that's another liveblog I'll want to check out when I'm done! I've never actually seen a Worm liveblog before. Adding it to the list myself!
Tumblr media
Nothing's really changed since I've been gone! I make a conscious effort not to do much Homestuck analysis off-blog, since I want my journey to be fully documented here.
Tumblr media
It's good to be back! I'm looking forward to a full reread when I'm done.
Tumblr media
Would you believe I didn't even know there was a book?
I also didn't know the movie had two (allegedly) terrible sequels, which is very funny. Neverending story indeed.
Tumblr media
Thank you! I can't take too much credit, though - most of my tagging system has been crowdsourced from askers!
Tumblr media
At some point, before we reach the end of the comic, I'm going to have to formalize my approach to liveblogging Homestuck's side content.
What I'll probably do is give each of them the 'lite' treatment initially, but if they turn out to be more canonical than I thought, or particularly interesting to liveblog, I'll 'zoom in', and analyze them properly. We'll see how we go!
Tumblr media
Could you imagine the relationship dynamics in your average troll soap opera? The shipping web for a single season would make our heads explode.
Tumblr media
It's a fun question. What sort of object symbolizes everything?
The first thing I'd try would be a star chart, Dave's magnifier and a literal planetful of Grist.
Tumblr media
Added to the list! Not until later later on, though - I'd worry that the opinions and theories of another liveblogger could interfere with my own, especially if they're talking about it with someone who's already read it!
Tumblr media
I would find it hard to disagree.
Tumblr media
Do people think Act 1 is pointless?
I mean, it is the slowest Act in terms of pacing, but slow pacing isn't always a bad thing. You sort of have to take it slow when your readers have this much to get to grips with.
...okay, maybe we didn't need quite as many Sylladex mishaps as we got. But we still needed some. Homestuck has a lot to introduce you to.
Tumblr media
I always pictured an English accent for Hass - although, interestingly, I didn't picture one for Jade. As a headcanon, I like the NZ one better.
Where did Grandpa grow up again, actually? He was raised by Fake Mark Twain, who was from Missouri - but I don't have a clue what a Missouri accent sounds like, let alone one from a century ago. I have a funny feeling that it's not the accent I'm imagining coming from Jade.
Tumblr media
Now that's a ship I'd never have seen coming. Props to Hussie for coming up with something more controversial than my Feferi<>Equius.
Tumblr media
All four kids, with four endgame weapons, might be able to challenge Jack's current incarnation - but they're not going to get the chance. You've hit the nail on the head - he's semi-perfect Jack for a reason.
I have several theories for Jade's prototyping, and every single one of them would make Jack even more dangerous than before. It's just barely possible to challenge him now, but things will only get worse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Read the room, Serket!
Would Vriska have tried to negotiate? She feels like the type of person who'd rather take a beating than admit they're outclassed. Plus, I'm not sure how much she'd have to offer Aradia, who seemed entirely motivated by revenge (and, possibly, secretly motivated by timeline stuff).
All that said, I would have loved to hear Vriska trying to worm her way out of this.
Tumblr media
I love it! Please send in the completed house, if you get the chance. That's going to look so cool with a moving meteor.
Tumblr media
And they're both easily distractible! This feels like two people who might actually get on surprisingly well, if they were in, say, the same high school class.
Tumblr media
It's hard to say what's a rarepair, since I don't know what ships are rare in the fandom - although I'd have a few guesses about the most common ones.
If we're going for a ship with very tenuous connections, I will submit Rose x Feferi for your appraisal. They're both fans of the Noble Circle, and their signature colors are pretty close.
You know what, I'll just review all of your ships. Tavros/Gamzee - PB&J - is pretty cute. [] I'd recommend Miracle Child for a number of reasons, but it does include a well-written Gamtav. Jack/Droog is more <> to me than it is <3. Like One Sundered Star might be influencing that? I'm not really sure. Somewhere I think I saw a Jack<>Droog. Your pre-shipping chart post isn't in the chrono; also, I'm pretty sure the A6A6I5 ask is one of mine. Gamzee/Eridan is a rarepair; I've seen it, but not often, and it's a <> in the fic I'm referencing. Kanaya<>Terezi and Feferi<>Vriska are strange enough that I've never seen them anywhere, really. [] And finally, Vriska and Tavros. These two are the textbook example of why the ashen quadrant needs to exist, and they're a perfect pair for it. [] ~LOSS (8/1/23)
I don't even know if Carapacians have moirallegiance - but those two would definitely work if they did.
Out of all my ships you flagged as rare, I think my favorite is Feferi<>Vriska. I just think they'd gel weirdly well together!

Glee Musical Retrospective: Express Yourself (The Power of Madonna)
youtube
Sung by: New Direction Girls Original Artist(s): Madonna
Welcome to Madonna week guys!!
Overall, I think this is a good episode full of great performances but the biggest thing is that it completely changes the way music is used on the show. While, yes, it does start a little with the previous episode, here is where we get not only a thematic episode, but our first full on tribute episode. The story is molded to fit the theme, and that theme is Madonna. We can argue about how well these tribute episodes work later on, but here is really the apex of this idea. Everything is bold and brash and in the flamboyant style that is Madonna. And the show kind of never looks back.
The other thing I want to point out about the music in this episode is that how its used deviates a lot from the original set up. Not only are we getting flashier, styled performances that don't really jive with what a high school glee club can do -- we also get music being used outside of reality (though that's later). The whole concept of having the music be sung in a realistic way is just kind of thrown out the window. And you know what? That's not necessarily a bad thing....
Story Analysis
While not the first music heard in the episode (I'll get to that in the extra long extras post for this episode) this is the first performance. And the set up is important -- the fact that the girls feel like they've had to take a second seat to the guys, or feel belittled by the guys... Or just don't feel sure of themselves in general.
As Sue however hammers the message of the episode in -- the whole point of Madonna is help women feel empowered. I kind of side eye the fact that the girls don't come up with it themselves and Will does - but at least he has a good point in that they should be allowed to express themselves however they want. And to not have the guys be asshats to them in the process.
Then Puck makes such a weird comment that Madonna doesn't translate to show choir. I realize it's for the sake of the narrative. But haven't we learned by now that you can turn anything into a show choir song?
Anyway... I'm glad the girls get to kick it off with this song, which boils down to the idea that men should really treat women with the respect that they deserve.
Don't go for second best baby Put your love to the test You know, you know, you've got to Make him express How he feels and maybe then You'll know your love is real
It's interesting that the song is called 'express yourself' and is about a woman singing her thoughts on romantic relationships, but really calls out the man (or partner) to express actual feelings. It's such an interesting twist -- in that the woman of the song doesn't want fake things money can by or fleeting sexual encounters but something real. And the women knowing this and not backing down? Knowing what they want and being able to express that? That's where the real empowerment comes from.
While each of these characters will go up and down with the idea of self worth and empowerment -- in this moment, and in this performance, they do own it. They're confident in themselves, and the point of the episode is that singing Madonna helps them get there. This song is definitely an anthem for them. And while each of them have individual struggles -- the come at this song as a unit, as a unified front that says -- hey, we're here and not backing down -- so deal with it.
It's the first time we really have a performance that the whole group of them can relate to -- it's not about one person's story, but the collective story being told.
I'd argue there's a metatexual element to this song as well. I'm sure this must have been one of Ryan Murphy's get up and go songs he listened to as a young person. There's a kind of air about this song that says --- hey, this is the new Glee -- so you need to get on board because we're doing this and not backing down.
Technical Thoughts
Okay, there is a lot going on...
One of the nice things about this song is that we get to hear all the girls' voices. It's the first song that Naya sings on. And the first time (it sounds like) they aren't doubling and tripling back up singers on the track. These ladies are talented, and they sound great together. It's nice that you can hear the different strains of voices come in and out of the bigger text.
The choreography is based a lot on Madonna's original choreography. They do a really good job with it -- and it's so different from the (sometimes dull) look that New Direction group numbers often had up to this point. The girls are also really throwing themselves into this performance - and it looks really good.
Another thing inspired by Madonna is the costumes. Interestingly, Madonna stayed with a black and white theme, while the costume designers used a lot of color here. Not only did each of the girls wear a color that looked good on them -- but the color pops on the stage, making them look even more striking. There's just an overall really captivating visual componant to this song -- and it's done purposely!
The other thing about the song itself is that it's very energetic and upbeat. I think that adds to the intention of the song -- to get these girls (and the show) energized and empowered. It never lets up and never backs down.
As an interesting exercise - check out all the guys uninterested reactions. Kevin McHale said it was hard to do because the girls were so good on stage! However - Chris, as usual, is hamming it up in the background as Kurt. I will say, though I understand why they did what they did, it's hard to believe that a bunch of teenage boys wouldn't be captivated by these girls dancing so provocatively.
Also - random thought, there are certain little strains of this song that remind me of Lady Gaga's Born This Way -- I wonder if this song inspired her.
vs. The Studio Version: Stylistically, there isn't really any difference (though I always appreciate how the studio version sounds cleaner). They add in the second verse, as well as a bridge - that gives the song another minute or so.
vs. The Original Version: This episode pushes really hard to copy everything about Madonna. The arrangement for the Glee version is exactly the same -- and it's a trend that Glee is going to continue to do, backing away from a more show choir-esque style of the Front 13. Head to about the middle of this video if you want to see the costume and choreography inspiration for the girls' performance.

Worn Teeth And Old Marks 01 - Route 66
Horropedia: 10.5 inches, fresh root, slightly decayed … Oh! The saliva … presumably it’s from a … or say, that giant carbuncle. But it could also be another speciality of Green Lake! For my personal taste, though, monster horror is obviously of a lower class. Hm … If I remember correctly, Ms. Tooth Fairy’s pouch is about 5 inches long. The size of the tooth is almost twice that of the poor flannelette bag … and it’s a bit too conservative to call such a deadly weapon a tooth.
Tooth Fairy: Excellent point, Mr. Horropedia. That is the case. Although I don’t mind expanding my collections … As I said earlier, it’s not common to see a critter of this size. So thank you very much for getting me this, Ms. Blonney.
Blonney: Ugh … In terms of the results, yes you should thank me. In fact I just fancy its sharpness … Before you make it one of your collections, could you ask Freddie to break the stupid wood into pieces with it? … We’ll give it back to you as soon as we find the axe. Immediately!
Horropedia: Whoo! The more reliable team came back … Hey, this way!
Sonetto: Ms. Tooth Fairy, I am very sorry … There are much more teeth in the area than we thought. Most broken teeth of the critters are excluded. There are fifteen remaining. They belong to different kinds of carbuncles, lindworms and olitiaus respectively … and quite a few baby teeth of humans.
Vertin: Considering the age of some of the Zeno Youth Force, it’s not really surprising.
Sonetto: If the human teeth are all excluded, there are another three unidentifiable … Well, in fact, I cannot confirm if they are teeth or not … but I guess the collections will always be special. Ms. Tooth Fairy, you could spend some time carefully screening …
Tooth Fairy: Ah. It’s here.
Sonetto: Um … sorry? You mean it’s among the baby teeth over there? … Do you need to double check? As far as I know, these are all baby teeth of children aged around 12. They have something in common that …
Tooth Fairy: I understand your concern, Ms. Sonetto. But as you said, the nine teeth in the pouch are all my unique collections. I know every pattern, every inch of wear and tear on them … Without even a glimpse, by touching alone, I can easily distinguish them from hundreds of teeth.
Jason: Hey. This is much more like an arcanist in my knowledge. Some quirks … you know, compared to those who aim at heads or toes in the stories, it’s kind of less weird to collect your own baby teeth.
Blonney: … Shut up, Jason. If you have time talking nonsense, you’d better give me a hand!
Tooth Fairy: As I know, over 40% of humans incline to collect their baby teeth as a record of their growth. Though their purpose is different from mine, it demonstrates that collecting baby teeth is not something exclusive to arcanists. My college mate had an elaborate brass box. It was filled with her own teeth.
Blonney: Your college … mate? That means .. you studied at …
Tooth Fairy: It’s the college for humans, Ms. Blonney. It’s located in Rochester, Minnesota. From my analysis of the information, I was the only arcanist admitted to Mayo Medical School that year. However, please allow me to make one thing clear.
Lying in her palm is the baby teeth that stained with blood, like a sugar cube that tastes weird.
Tooth Fairy: … This is not my baby tooth.
Route 66
Route 66 starts from Chicago, Illinois, and runs west across to Santa Monica in Los Angeles County, California. It’s a highway that has developed rapidly since the war was over. On Route 66 ran Wills Keep in the past, and then Cadillac. Countless families from the east hummed tunes as they sped towards the beach, just like rockets roaring to the universe. However, the introduction of the Interstate Highway Act marked its drastic decline. Now it is barely known.
Car Radio: Welcome to Eastern Tornado! This is your old friend …
Even though the car has long been a necessity for every American now …
Car Radio: The first song is from Whitney Houston …
But for someone who had just turned 18, a lonely road trip was fresh experience indeed.
Tooth Fairy: Huh … Hopefully this meeting with the Professor will go smooth …
That’s right—a sudden call from my mentor set me on this brief journey.
Campbell’s Home
Tooth Fairy: Yes. Thank you very much for this. Father said I wouldn’t have completed my studies at Mayo without your help. However, as for the conference … Approximately, it takes at least five days to drive from here to Arizona. Father has been quite busy these days… I’m sorry. Please allow me to …
Professor: Hahahaha, don’t be uptight, kid! Like I said, it’s just a casual family call, a small talk … I haven’t seen you for a long time since I quit working as a visiting professor. How’s Mr. Campbell doing? Oh! He loves you very much … Of course, I must say, you never let him down. A Subaru SVX, the red one … It’s your graduation present and birthday gift, right?
Tooth Fairy: Oh … yes.
Professor: Welcome to adulthood! Now you’re 18 years old, a big boy … oh no, an adult! The talented student I tutored in person. The most impressive one in the history of Mayo. One month? Or two? Maybe we haven’t seen each other in a long time…
Tooth Fairy: If you mean the last time we met, I think it was over six months ago.
Professor: Oh, six months … quite a long time! *sigh* I still remember the first time I saw you, the textbooks you were to read was even taller than you …
Tooth Fairy: … Thank you for thinking of me, but … …
Professor: Hm?
Tooth Fairy: … Fine, fine. I’ll bring that Stags’ Leap Cabernet Sauvignon … Mother has been keeping an eye out for it when she heard of your interest.
Professor: So you’re coming, right?
Tooth Fairy: If I can make it, Professor … After all, I haven’t tried driving across half of the continent yet.
Professor: Oh! That is … fantastic! Take your time! Thank Mrs. Campbell for the wine for me, kid. I’ll see you in a few days.
Tooth Fairy: Hah … Hah …
The screeching of the brakes yanks me from my thoughts.
Tooth Fairy: *coughs* Damn …
I swerve to the side right in time, but the figure that suddenly appears from the side of the road …
Route 66 runs across the American continent. By then it has long been one of the loneliest highways.
Tooth Fairy: *cough* …! How … could there be … a child here?
When I think about it now … I wish I had never got this blood-stained baby tooth.

Hazbin Hotel Songs Analysis
Aka Rei has a new hyperfixation and has to talk about it or he will explode
Since I basically grew up on Musicals (it's in my blood) and I do appreciate a hell centered cartoon/animation, of course my new fav is Hazbin Hotel.
Since the first episode I can't stop listening to the songs and well... my theorist brain is doing overtime. So here's a layman analysis of the music.
I will get to my theories about the story and such at some later point.
Let's go! Spoilers ahead, duh.
First of all: Sam Haft is a genius. Alex Brightman is amazing. And every character has a genre or at least signature instrument. And obviously a lot of my own opinions.
Happy Day in Hell
We basically get hit in the face with a classical Musical Number and get to know Charlie's dream and her musical style. Plus some small hints at Vaggie's background.
The music and the style is very reminiscent of Overtures from modern Musicals, which is very fitting.
Hell Is Forever
Already a callback to previous songs, but fast. Once Adam starts the genre switch to rock, which is Adam's signature style.
Before his guitar solo is a pretty nice reference.
The message is basically "Fuck you, I do what I want bitch"
Stayed Gone
Ah yes, the sexual tension /hj
The beginning is very rhythmical, controlled and straight (ha). Once Vox gets going it gets more swingy with repeated patterns. The quick parts show what a talker he is.
Alastor slides in and slowly takes the song over like in Hells Greatest Dad. Also the piano gets a bit more present once Alastor joins.
In the end Alastor completely took over.
It Starts With Sorry
At first this song seemed so random, but well. Now it makes sense.
When Sir Pentious starts singing, in the background there's a guitar mimicking snake Rattles.
Again a very Broadway song. I cannot get over that this again is Alex Brightman!
Respectless
I love it.
Carmilla's theme is obviously Latin with a Spanish guitar. And Velvet's Hip Hop or at least something similar, not sure because not my type of music.
Zestials small part shows how adaptable he is.
Whatever It takes
Hopefully we get more songs with Zestial.
Again it starts with guitar, and turns into a amazing power ballad. It shows Carmillas passion and devotion to her family.
Veggies part on the other hand is so "weak". Which totally makes sense, since she is still so scared. We also get some hints again. In the background you can hear a kind of glockenspiel.
The duet makes now more sense. Daphne Rubin-Vega is crushing it, amazing voice.
Poison
Ah yes, the controversial song. Tbh stop, listen again and start thinking. Chill.
EDM seems to be Angel's genre which is so fitting.
The lyrics are heartbreaking. No, he is not glorifying his abuse, he doesn't know another way. Angel has given up, he is trapped. So the least he can do is have fun. He's already in Hell, so fuck it.
The last chorus. Ah! This is not Angel Dust, this is Anthony breaking down.
Loser, Baby
No one was prepared for this. Keith David could fuck me just with his voice, respectfully.
Husk's style is kinda idk, brass ig. But don't quote me on that.
The lyrics are perfect and so relatable.
Fun Fact someone on TikTok pointed out: Husk offers Angel his hand and only pulls him along when Angel takes his hand. We stan a gentleman.
Hell's Greatest Dad
Electro Swing! The title alone shows Lucifers Pride. And how much he cares about Charlie.
Again Alastor butting in to take control. God, he loves being that guy.
The violin solo, such a nice reference.
Headcanon: Mimzy waited for the perfect time to bust in.
More Than Anything
Ah yes, the midpoint dramatic ballad duet.
It's so boring but sweet. They harmonize so nicely. Who doesn't love a good healthy bonding song.
Also harmonies in this song a peak.
Welcome To Heaven
I know this voice! Blaine from Glee went to Heaven!
The style is so clean and fake, perfect. Also organ.
The lyrics are low-key petty. Also Molly?!
You Didn't know
Such a dramatic song, very musical end of act 1.
Love the switch when Lute starts singing, again with rock but much more controlled than with Adam.
Emily's theme is also very mousy in the beginning.
The callback to Hell Is Forever is so nice, the harmonies though...
Big reveal at the end. Adam is a Dick. (Hehe)
Out For Love
Heck yea! Carmilla centered song.
Very Latin and passionate, love it, still with a modern flair.
Tbh Carmilla is underrated.
Ready For This
You go girl! Again very Broadway.
Once the cannibals join in it gets more old-timey, which fits the period the Town is in. Really sounds like a cheery war song.
Rosie and Alastors dynamic is amazing, just two queer besties being their true self.
This song also gets us excited for the final battle and stills shows Charlie's anxiety.
More Than Anything (Reprise)
This was torture. Normally a Reprise is very telling, example Hamilton.
I was so scared for Vaggie. Still amazing song, good representation.
Finale
What an ending! I was in tears.
The little callbacks amazing, Lucifer being there for his daughter. Everyone supporting her now. It's really a perfect Finale song.
Vox and Valentino being gay and their usual self.
Alastor's part reaks of foreshadowing. No, Alturist is probably not his surname. And no, he doesn't really care about Charlie and Co, he is there for power.
Conclusion
Amazing music and storytelling. Perfect for the mental ill 18+ theater nerds.
The Living Tombstone are amazing! Listen to their music.
Looking forward to the next season.

Note
Hi, I stumbled across your page as I was going through various blogs on Jikook. This may turn into a really long post/ask. Im sorry. I am so new to this fandom lol. I have very little context on a number of things other than what I’ve been reading (which I admit isn’t much) and I’ve never been a shipper so my slate is clean!! I got introduced to BTS through Instagram, around the time of the Busan concert. Run BTS was the first song I listened to and the performance drew me to Jungkook. I don’t have a bias though. Browsing Jungkook videos on Instagram and YouTube led me to the deep dark world of shipping and I discovered Taekook and Jikook both around the same time. Now, while I found Taekook to be quite interesting, what made me sit up and notice was a video (not sure the time but probably baby Jikook) which analysed how Jungkook hated Jimin and then fell for him. And I must admit, I was touched by it. But as I watched more videos, I started seeing Jungkook for was he was in the early days. A really shy introverted boy who was good at everything. And his relationship with his other members was that of extreme affection and respect. But as I kept watching…I saw that with Jimin, there was something else. He was very soft with Jimin. The MMA 2018, Run BTS episode with the frying pan aimed at Suga, the vlive for Jimins birthday and the soft tone he uses to speak to him, at some awards (JK is wearing a red suit and JM a blue suit) and how JK is almost shy(?) of JMs proximity. And then I saw how JM is towards JK - particularly the emergency moments (when JK was injured). It got me thinking if there was more to them.
I come from a country where LGBTQ hasnt gained momentum and so my views on this aren’t as developed. But it’s very obvious to me that there’s something there. Or was there. I’ve not seen any new interactions. So it could be that whatever was there either died or they grew out of it. Or they are together, like a couple of many years and now comfortable enough to grow with each other while pursuing their own interests (as couples would). I have noticed a lot more interaction between JK and V though. And I personally don’t see this as romantic or more than a close friendship. I haven’t seen anything that tells me otherwise.
Anyway, my question (finally) is whether there are particular moments, where you have seen a shift towards more of a friendship for Jikook than something more romantic or potentially romantic. Or do you think that they are still ‘slightly more’ than friends?
Welcome to the fandom! I would urge you to commit to your own conclusions instead of relying on forced narratives (if you can help it). That is to say, try and watch their moments that aren't edited in favor of Jikook. I forgot the channel, but there’s one that posted Jikook moments exactly as they are in as close to a consecutive order as possible. There’s no manipulative editing, no odd splicing, no text or music overlay–just raw content.
I’ll be blunt: the Jikook analysis* video you witnessed, where Jungkook's feelings towards Jimin supposedly changes, is a forced narrative. There are a couple of things to note when observing the volatility between Jikook when they were younger: their age and their personalities. Jungkook was extremely shy when he was a small bean, and painfully so, which immediately affected the way he interacted with his environment and the people in it. Jimin, at the time, had more of a rambunctious personality. To someone like Jungkook, especially at his age at the time, someone like Jimin can be a little too intense.
* All analyses videos are forced narratives because they’re all highly suggestive. They’re good to watch for entertainment, but don’t let your brain fall out in the process.
But that’s teenagers for you.
We can all wax poetic behind their motivations because there is a lot more to it than just superficial details, but your early to midteens are really tumultuous. I think their misunderstanding of one another in their youth could've easily been resolved with communication, but that's hardly a resolution skill they would've developed at that age.
The reason why that particular narrative works and why it's considered a "good" jumping off point for baby Jkkrs is because that specific change in chemistry is revered in pop culture. Jungkook and Jimin could be completely different people, and the narrative will still hold and be felt by anyone who gravitates towards that trope. I think that’s part of the appeal of Jikook on the onset, but if anyone took the time to witness the way their dynamic evolves without any sort of agenda, there’s a very clear shift between them that happens when they enter their late teens. Now, how you decide to interpret that shift is completely subjective (and where shippers will deviate from non-shippers).
Currently, some shippers/supporters do believe that they’ve reached this point of domesticity in their “established relationship” where it’s comfortable and natural for them, etc. It’s not my personal belief, however.
I’m on the same boat as you with Taekook. I think it’s delightful that they’re hanging out, but I fail to see that intimate chemistry between them that their shippers see. I chalk this up to a matter of perspective, and I would much prefer to stay out of that conversation.
Anyway, my question (finally) is whether there are particular moments, where you have seen a shift towards more of a friendship for Jikook than something more romantic or potentially romantic. Or do you think that they are still ‘slightly more’ than friends?
Nothing in particular, no. Generally speaking, I find most of their interactions to be on par with the kind of closeness they would’ve naturally developed over the years. It’s only when they act in ways that don’t quite measure up to the context of their known relationship that makes me wonder about their motivations and/or real feelings.
I want to clarify that I don’t view Jikook in terms of being friends or “slightly more than friends” because this particular phrasing can sometimes suggest there’s some validity to a kind of relationship between them, and I’m not that kind of blog. Instead, I’ll occasionally comment on the potential existence of mutual attraction because I feel that this encapsulates a more generalized experience in humans as a whole and comfortably straddles that more neutral POV I strive for when shipping, but it also doesn’t dismiss any merit behind Jikook either.
On principle, I tread carefully when it comes to shipping, so there are things about their personhood that I’m not going to... violate (for lack of a better word)... just to make my narrative of them seem more real or to assuage myself that they’re fine, when the reality is that I don’t know anything about them, their lives, or their relationships with each other and other people.

Albums of the Year - The Lower Card
Tumblr media
My plan is to do two album posts. The second one, which may or may not go up tomorrow, will be my top 10 albums of 2023 (not really ranked although i'll tell you which is the best one). This one is dedicated to the second tier of my favourite albums. These are the records that i liked a lot this year but which were either straightforwardly not as good as the top ten or slightly compromised in my appreciation of them somehow. A few are albums that I really liked but just haven't been arsed to listen to that much. Others are things that i first heard only recently and would say right now that they're as good as anything in the Top 10, only I haven't known them long enough to commit myself to that. Other reasons are perhaps more idiosyncratic but we'll come to that as we go along.
Baby Queen - Quarter Life Crisis
Arabella Latham - the Baby Queen herself! - skirts a tricky line between knowing and vulnerable on Quarter Life Crisis, sniping waspishly at the modern world one minute before opening herself up enough to leave me in tears. She brings it all off surprisingly well, with her cynical persona always shot through with enough charm to take the weight off of each tonal shift. Musically the album feels reminiscent of Sucker-era Charli, moving between 80s style pop and more modern ideas while occasionally working in a softer, indie-style palette. But its Latham’s vocals which are the star of the record, with her pointed barbs and semi-rapped confessionals by turns funny, relatable and deeply, desperately sad. Kid Genius annoyed me at first with its straightforwardly dumb internet critique but it soon became a highlight, with nods of hypocritical agreement marking every hit on the target. At the other end of the scale is the devastating ballad Obvious, where Latham's pain is shattering enough to cancel out every last knowing wink.
Caroline Polachek - Desire I Want To Turn Into You
Caroline Polachek’s vastly hyped second album is not quite the triumph for me that it is for others, but in all fairness I still liked it a lot. While many of the best songs (Bunny, Billions) were already familiar, euphoric club bangers like Smoke and I Believe proved that there were still some big pop moments left to be mined. The slower material was more subtle in its appeal but repeat listens gave life to tracks like the hymnal Hopedrunk Everasking too. For me the real issue with the album was an occasional excess of politeness, as songs like Fly To You rambled along anonymously to little notable effect. But Desire... is certainly a step on from 2020's lacklustre Pang and contains enough great songs to slot in comfortably alongside the best of Polachek's past guises.
El Michels Affair/Black Thought - Glorious Game
Following on from 2022's excellent Danger Mouse collaboration Cheat Codes, Black Thought took the obvious move this year and found another producer with a strong, idiosyncratic approach. Leon Michels switched things around - sometimes backing the Roots star with a live band, sometimes recording material  to chop up for samples - in the course of creating a 70s soul/funk sound that’s not so much laid back as stoned beyond redemption. In keeping with these more nostalgic elements, the rhymes have gentler vibe here than on Cheat Codes, but Black Thought is still prepared to dig deep, dissecting highly personal memories and stretching into sharp social analysis. Unsurprisingly, his performances are as fiercely on-point as ever on an album that displays all of the rapper's warmth and brusque charm.
Free Love - Insides
Husband and wife duo Free Love’s second album is an extraordinarily eclectic business. Whilst staying within the broad tent of electronic dance music, they journey through wibbling ambient house, acid pop and droning experimentalism, keeping a spirit of adventure about them which sees each bold step as a fairly reasonable response to the last, even as they sometimes seem to come entirely out of the blue. While I can honestly say that Insides is never a dull record, it’s the Virginia Wing style dance pop that sticks in the mind most firmly, with Suzi Cook’s smart Glaswegian patter adding another element of mischief to an already stacked LP.
PinkPantheress - Heaven Knows
Heaven Knows is not really a great leap forward for PinkPantheress so much as a refinement and consolidation: while some of the rhythms have softened a bit and the tracks grown more accomplished, we’re still very much in the sad girl drum n bass territory that we’ve all come to know and love. But the melodies are as sweet as ever, the emotions perhaps even more sore and relatable and her ability to resonate at a wider level seems increasingly assured throughout. The hit single Boy’s A Liar Pt 2 combines video game style charm with a cracking Ice Spice cameo but it's only one part of the album's greatness, with Mosquito’s gentle happy/sad melancholy and the eerie atmospherics and fierce breaks of Capable of Love being the songs that stuck with me the most.
SZA - SOS
I’ve frequently enjoyed SZA’s sprawling RnB epic throughout the year but I can’t really say that I got to know it that well. It’s too long to me to sit down and listen to in one go, so I’ve tended to wander about with it on the mp3 player as bits of it drifted in and out of my consciousness. What has stuck is, first and foremost, the hits - we all know Kill Bill surely, and Snooze’s just slower than it ought to be vibe is also a highlight - as well as the surprising moments and deep cut highlights, of which the folky Too Late is the absolute queen. But I think what are perhaps my favourite moments are the lines where SZA gives us plainly too much information - “now I’m ovulating and I need raw sex!”, “I don’t get the dick that I deserve”, “I’m horny, like suck these!” - which have made me warm to her on a personal level and appreciate the messy lyrical weight of her talent. So if I’m honest, the reason I come back to SOS is to hear about SZA’s sex life: not in a prurient way - it’s too humdrum to be sexy -  but just because I find how she talks about it extremely funny. Never let it be said that this blog is high-minded.
Tate McRae - Think Later
Despite the brace of fantastic singles that preceded it, my hopes really weren’t that high for Think Later, largely because of how shabby last year’s I Used To Think I Could Fly LP had been. Happily, Tate has shifted up her style and gotten a bit of attitude and, as a consequence, presents herself as a much more interesting figure across an album of far stronger material. Combining her already keen sense of melody with a succession of rattling beats, McRae feels more assured here, turning in a string of bangers full of soaring hooks which rarely fail to hit their mark. Greedy was a massive and well deserved hit but the supremely catchy Exes, the windswept ballad Stay Done or the rumbling, guitar driven We're Not Alike are all equally as good. In truth, the only reason I didn’t elevate this to the top tier is cos it’s only been out for a week or two and I was worried that I might change my mind up (like it’s origami).
The Clientele - I Am Not There Anymore
Much was made of the new directions on The Clientele’s seventh album. Computers were talked about, experimental cut up techniques: it all sounded very fancy in the abstract. And yet if I’m honest, I Am Not There Anymore sounds suspiciously like just another very good Clientele record: maybe a little different but not so you'd find it hard to tell who it was. Fables Of The Silverlink synthesised their classic sound with a glitchy modern approach and there was a dark, rumbling vibe to much of the first half of the LP which definitely felt expansive in its ambitions. But there was still plenty of room for the autumnal elegance of Hey Siobhan and I Dreamed Of You Maria, on a record that sounded enjoyably familiar even within that extended range.
The Mountain Goats - Jenny From Thebes
TMG’s return to the characters from All Hail West Texas may not have recreated its ultra lo-fi sound, but the key attributes of compassion and intensity were still placed front and centre. While perhaps not the most immediate of records, Jenny From Thebes repaid repeat listening, with its compelling storylines, John Darnielle’s deft, intelligent lyrics and, more than anything, his unsinkable ability to carry a song proving over time to be the album’s most important qualities. And stepping away from the bigger picture, Clean Slate, Fresh Tattoo and Same As Cash were powerful standouts which packed a huge emotional punch, songs as good as anything in The Mountain Goats’ long and illustrious catalogue.
U.S. Girls - Bless This Mess
After the relatively scattershot Heavy Light, Meg Remy spent most of Bless This Mess playing with squelchy synthetic funk, sounding for all the world like she’d time travelled back to 1981 and was living it up in an artist’s commune. But despite the close thematic focus, she was still able to vary her approach a little, moving comfortably between pounding disco bangers, warm RnB and gentle psychedelic rock whilst staying well within the sound template that she'd set for herself. So Typically Now’s twitchy paranoid pop and the extended floor filler Tux were instant highlights, but it was songs like the moving Covid ballad Screen Face that increased its emotional depth, drawing out themes of connection and separation while adding some welcome humanity.

other than the 1975, fave lyrics from songs from different artists (analysis welcome)
-> drama a-level is fun but so weird exam wise, so good luck on whenever that exam is. i actually miss english lit a-level so much so im glad you're liking it :,)
ooo now this is interesting! i’ve chosen 3 artists that I also love reading into their lyrics — and I think we can all agree that it would be a crime not to include the lyric master herself… taylor swift;)
taylor swift — one of my favourite tay songs I would actually say upon a first listen you would categorise it as one of her ‘simpler’ pieces in terms of complexity, however when you do read the lyrics, I feel like it speaks (pun intended) a lot about taylor’s era at the time! and in honour of speak now (taylor’s version) — it’s ‘mean’! taylor has mastered her craft with creating a good balance between simple lyrics and what she means emotionally, an example being “words like knives” / “voice like nails on a chalkboard” and “all you’re ever gonna be is mean” — it balances those similes and the bluntness of the chorus amazingly, and it’s just so fun to listen to and delve and explore. speak now has always been a special album because she uses her music to communicate not only with us swifties (who love to read into everything), but also the idle gossip that she doesn’t write her own songs — the most girlboss move ever to then release an entirely self wrote album. now that is who taylor is. the special thing with taylor as well, or at least how I interpret the song, although she’s clearly talking about her own experiences, her lyrics don’t alienate the listener, because she knows that we relate. whether it be from bullying or anything else, “all you are is mean” also tells the listener that you are more than them, and your success is entirely up to you, not to the negative & mean people in your life! you are worth everything!
paramore — by also choosing paramore along with taylor, you are absolutely right in assuming that I am not okay after listening to ‘castles crumbling’. but we move! for paramore, I want to talk about ‘thick skull’ from their latest album ‘this is why’, because of the powerful lyrics along with hayley’s vocals and the instruments and just everything. although I’m obviously a massive the 1975 fan, I will admit that I think ‘thick skull’ is the strongest ending compared to recent albums that have been released, and although ‘when we are together’ is a strong end to ‘bfiafl’, I think ‘thick skull’ takes the crown. ‘this is why’ as an entire album has some of the strongest lyrics I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to, so just narrowing this down has been insanely difficult. “I am a magnet for broken pieces” firstly sets up that dire atmosphere along with the low, slow introduction in the music itself. I love music that feels like an experience (clearly from my other analysis’) and this is exactly what the song feels like. it’s simple and effective (my favourite combination). straight off the back of that, “I am attracted to broken people” although reflects the same atmosphere, my reaction has always been relatableeeeeee. finally, the obvious “thick skull never did nothing for me” is so emotional and hard hitting, yet also liberating for hayley herself, stating that they’re ‘self indulgent’ and ‘healing’, making the song an absolutely emotional pleasure to listen to.
the japanese house — my favourite album of the year, ‘in the end it always does’ has produced some seriously genre changing and revolutionary songs. trust me when I say this album is life changing! one of the songs I think is slept on from the album is ‘over there’, next to ‘sunshine baby’ as my favourites. I am currently absolutely obsessed with amber, so I wanted to look at the chorus in particular. like I mentioned previously, songs that feel like an experience are the best, and the masterful layering of the vocals is really what gets me throughout the entire album — it is absolutely beautiful. “where do you wanna go? did you wanna get some air? do you like it over there?” by having the chorus limited to interrogative sentences, it really helps create that isolation and separation that comes from not knowing someone anymore (specifically through a breakup). it starts off almost hopeful and receptive with “where do you wanna go?”, willing, before acknowledging that development through “do you like it over there?” / “over there?” — now completely limited.
hopefully all of that made sense, definitely weird to not be talking about the 1975 but super fun nonetheless! and also thank you very much, shouldn’t be too bad hopefully and gonna savour the time before exams this year and actually kick my butt to revise super early.
(adding this gif because I think it’s appropriate)

Hello, Easter Eggs! And welcome to Part 1 of 3
Find Part 2 Here Find Part 3 Here Masterlist Here
Tumblr media
This is a little listicle of all of the references made throughout Paddington 3: Lost in Mallorca. Maybe you caught them all, maybe you'd like to read through them all and read the whole post again so that you can fully enjoy the detail and intent behind our movie, tv, and pop culture loving couple? I'll leave that up to you. Cheers - enjoy!
Tumblr media
Javi Gutierrez’s third favorite movie is Paddington 2, so it only seems appropriate to name a fanfic about him Paddington 3, while giving him an adorable, teddy bear looking dog named Paddington.
youtube
Javi and X’s nicknames: • Mi vida, mi amor - my life, my love • Cara mia, Querida, and Mon cherº • This is Italian, Spanish, and French, respectively * Cara mia - my darling (feminine) * Querida - my dear (feminine) * Mon cher - my dear (masculine) º This is an homage to the Addams Family movies starring Raúl Juliá and Anjelica Huston, playing Gomez and Morticia Addams, who are passionately in love. Morticia’s use of French drives Gomez wild.
youtube
Javi washing his hands - Because nobody needs a UTI or any other infection, be real people - Javi’s so considerate!
Tumblr media
The line “Reader, I was successful” in regards to sneaking more ice cream onto Javi’s chest is a little homage to Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, towards the end when Jane narrates, “Reader, I married him,” speaking of course, about Mr. Rochester. (This might come back in future fanfics I write, pay attention, Reader 🙂) “No. Más. Manos.” Have you ever heard of the film, Manos, Hands of Fate? Well good news, the whole MST3K version of the movie is available to stream for free on YouTube:
youtube
"Slowly, he looked me up and down, “As you wish, cara mia,” - this one's personal, and one of my first childhood crushes ever, Cary Elwes as Westley aka Dread Pirate Roberts, in The Princess Bride. Oh, how my tiny little heart frantically pumped, understanding that when he said, "As you wish," he really meant, "I love you."
Tumblr media
"Giant Inflatable Arm Waving Guys outside of car dealerships" - well, for me it’s always about Always Sunny.
youtube
"...nuzzling right in the sweet spot where it tickles a little, but also makes you forget where you are - so what, who cares?" - I can't say "So what? Who cares?" without always thinking about Fred Armisen dressed as Joy Behar. And now, neither will you.
Tumblr media
“You can’t leave Baby on the counter,” is a throwback to this iconic scene, and I’m including it because not everyone is #Blessed to know what a gift Patrick Swazye was. I also included the water dance as an homage to the final dance scene in Dirty Dancing, but with a Spanish flair, just for Javi.
youtube
"With his right arm looking like Michelangelo carved it out of marble" - Hi, David much?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Like la petite mort? Komm süsser tod?” La petite mort - French for “the little death” is analogous to experiencing an orgasm, dying a little, seeing the light Komm süsser tod - this is the German version, “come sweet death,” and is in reference to the piece by J.S. Bach, Komm süßer Tod, komm selge Ruh, (Come, sweet death, come, blessed rest): https://www.classicfm.com/composers/bach/music/come-sweet-death/ ; Five times the woman at prayer in the song begs for death, and the sweet release of paradise - and you wonder how it became synonymous with reaching climax? https://www.bachvereniging.nl/en/bwv/bwv-478
Tumblr media
Oh, Naughty Little Mermaid!
Tumblr media
"I read that it’s supposed to be a shield in front of him, and that he’s holding a club raised behind him. It’s certainly more gladiatorial" - Y'all ready for Pedro in Gladiator 2?
Tumblr media
“...I’d definitely be inclined to be a stealthy archer!” - this is actually a reference to Skyrim, the Bethesda game. IYKYK - and definitely not to be confused with this one:
Tumblr media
"Every Day You Play! Yes! Yes! I remembered!" - This is not the full poem, just the last few stanzas. Below I'm including the entire poem, English vs. the original Spanish. Every Day You Play by Pablo Neruda English vs. Spanish The translation I included was not specifically this one. It was my attempt through translating on my own - in addition to comparing multiple translations in order to get what I felt was an accurate English version that also captured the romance and musicality of Neruda's words. This analysis does an excellent job of describing the various emotions Neruda feels as he describes this relationship that he holds so dear, with such passion, and intensity - try not swoon, I dare you:
“As you wish,” and he jerked me upright….” This is absolutely inspired by two things, first the more obvious one, Princess Bride - see earlier gif.
And secondly, a specific scene in Narcos, because I needed it to be, and so did you. Don’t lie. Consider this - Javi G. roleplaying Javi P., is that technically an Inception? Should we ask Leo? Nah. He's busy. SUPER, SUPER NSFW Peña scene link to jog your memory just over yonder: Javi and I will both gleefully giggle while watching this, but at some point I will need to fan myself so that I don't get the vapors.
Tumblr media
Dr. Frankenstein - of course I’m referring to Gene Wilder.
youtube
“Let’s stick a pin in it, ‘kay?” - I know you remember this SNL Skit:
Tumblr media
"Two old guy muppets" - in case you’re not familiar:
Tumblr media
“Mi hermosa paloma” - my beautiful dove. La Paloma was Frida Kahlo’s nickname, while her husband Diego Rivera was nicknamed El Elefante, a complex, yet beautiful real life relationship worth learning about:
youtube
Our Flag Means Death - if you haven’t watched it yet, I’m curious why not.
youtube
"There’s an artist by the name of Joan Miró who painted a series of works called ‘The Constellations’ during WWII" - So you'd like to learn more about Joan Miró?
There were many artists, like Miró living in Paris around the time Germany began its infiltration, and while Miró managed to narrowly flee to Spain many, like Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, André and Jacqueline (neé Lamba) Breton, and Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's wife - he was busy flying a Bloch MB with the Armée de l'Air for a bit), to name a few, took up residence at Villa Air-Bel, just outside Marseille as part of a refugee project conceived by the ERC (Emergency Rescue Committee, an American humanitarian effort based in Marseille). Varian Fry, an American journalist, along with Mary Jayne Gold, an American heiress from Chicago, and Albert Hirschman, a Jewish-German humanitarian from Berlin, worked together prior to U.S. involvement in WWII to provide support and resettlement opportunites for refugees. They saved over 2,000 people, including 200 artists and intellectuals at risk of the advancing forces.
The International Rescue Committee did not stop its work after WWII, they continued, and in the 1960's when Varian Fry needed to raise additional funds for the IRC, Jacques Lipchitz, one of the artists Fry rescued suggested "Flight" as the theme - the concept encapsulating the refugee experience. Over 300 artists contributed one of a kind works, including Miró.
It's a little disappointing that Kathy Burke in the Travel Man video I included at the end, is so disinterested in Miró's work; but it's also hilarious that Richard Ayoade called Picasso a hack, because Joan Miró himself considered Picasso bougie and is quoted as saying, "I will break their guitar," referring of course, to Picasso's cubist paintings and sculptures of a guitar. Man loves his guitars, okay?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(There's more guitar shtuff, but I'm sure if you're motivated, you'll find your way to them.) Gary Busey - one of the most frightening actors you could possibly encounter in the wild, and that’s a fact. If you don't want to sign up to read the whole article, the first few paragraphs should provide an adequate characterization:
“Sherlock-inspired Mind Palace” from the BBC show Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I think I know who was on the grassy knoll!” - while I’m not making light of the original horrendous incident, the truth is you could have your pick of television series, movies, and books that make the conspiracy or the event a plot device, and that in and of itself is the reference: The Umbrella Academy, 11/22/63 by Stephen King, Mad Men, Quantum Leap, the list goes on.
Tumblr media
As a long time bartender, I love mixing up drinks and have a strong interest in cocktail history. I'm a purist who believes that the best cocktails use the best ingredients; poor ingredients often are high in sugar, and that's what leaves you with a hangover the next day. One of my favorite resources is Imbibe Magazine, and so I present, Imbibe Magazine's collection of Old Fashioned Riffs. Cheers, loves.
Imbibe Magazine Old Fashioned Riffs
“all up ons” - this is an extremely old internet reference to a character named Strong Bad, who used the phrase in interesting and sometimes confusing ways:
youtube
“Oh! Hel-lo, Sailor!” - super obscure reference to this Anne Taintor piece:
Tumblr media
There's more Easter Eggs to come, don't you worry, in Easter Eggs Part 2: More Easter Eggs, The Eggening.
You can find that RIGHT HERE.

four chambers buck/eddie (minor), eddie centric, an analysis of the diaz house, (home is about the people, not the space), 1.6k ______________
Eddie holds his heart in physical spaces. Frames, photo albums, ticket stubs. It’s less about the sentiment and more about the proof, evidence of the better moments, and a tangible reminder that they won’t be the last. He carries an old photo of Chris in his wallet and a yellow sticky note from Buck in the back of his phone case, scratchy, all caps writing — “Had to leave early, didn’t want to wake you up. There’s coffee on the counter for you. See you tonight.” — with a heart scribbled at the bottom. He carries his love outside his chest, but hides it in his pockets, under his shirt, and around his neck.
It’s scattered throughout the living room, his heart is in a comfortable place. The warm brown coffee table and throw pillows on the couch. Soft lights, lamps in every corner. An ash filled fireplace and charred brick, as if to say, “yes, there is life here, believe me when I say there’s life.”
[ao3 link]
Out in the living room, his love is most evident on the bookshelf. Loved ones held not by the hand, but by mahogany frames and canvas wrapped photo albums. Two albums, to be exact. The first is from Texas, from his childhood. Family photos year by year, some members disappearing, new ones flooding in, staying whether they want to or not. Some people who only continue to exist in these four-by-six slots, neatly encased in plastic, notes and dates scribbled over the back.
There’s photos of young Eddie cradling a baby Sophia, photos of Sophia and Eddie with Adriana spread across their laps, and a particularly memorable one of Eddie spoon feeding baby Adri ice cream when a baby her age definitely should not have been eating ice cream. First days of school, weekend trips, and middle school phases he’d rather forget. Newspaper cutouts of his baseball stats, team photos with trophies in hand, and senior pictures of him in his jersey. Team captain. He never really wanted it, but he accepted the offer all the same.
Shannon starts to appear around this time, prom photos together, though she wasn’t his date, just a friend of a friend with some sort of connection. Selfies taken on an old film camera from her mother, candid shots of Eddie, smiling, laughing, free, a side of him kept hidden from everyone but her. A few more photos strangers were kind enough to take for them, some strangers proving to be better photographers than others.
Another family photo, this time with Shannon in frame. Off to the side, attached only by Eddie’s arm around her waist, but in frame all the same.
A sonogram of Christopher before they had a name, engagement photos because that’s what they were supposed to do, and a single wedding picture taken from a courthouse bench.
Shannon still makes herself known in the last few pages, though her and Eddie no longer exist in the same frame. Her and Chris. Him and Chris. Chris alone. He’s off to Afghanistan.
Blank pages, accidentally skipped. A photo of him accepting the Silver Star he never wanted, added to the album despite his better wishes, alongside a handful of army memories he’d rather not look back on.
It’s in his heart, all the same.
The last few pages are filled with the only pictures Eddie took himself. Every one, every single one is of Chris. The time lost in those skipped pages finding its way back into the album, one day at a time. First days of school, weekend trips, and all his childhood interests coming and going in phases.
The second photo album carries his second chances. It’s not a memento from Texas or a gift he’d rather not receive, no. This one he chose all on his own. He chose Los Angeles, he chose Chris, he chose the 118, and with them, he chose a fresh start, a blank page. Family photos of a different kind.
Second page, third slot down, Buck makes himself known. He first exists in Eddie’s heart somewhere along the bottom shelf. Three, four, five pages in, Buck never disappears. In the firehouse, after work, trips to the zoo, he never disappears. Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years, he never disappears. The couch, dining room, and kitchen, Buck never disappears.
It always comes back to the kitchen. Before there was a home, there was a kitchen and dirty dishes. Eddie washes the dishes by hand, one by one. Buck sits on the countertop, stacking dried plates, sorting cutlery in the drawers. He leaves every cabinet open — “it’s way more efficient, Eddie,” — and carries three mugs in each hand.
His heart skips in the kitchen. Flinging soap bubbles while rinsing plates, stealing from simmering saucepans on the stove, his breath hitches when Buck swipes a thumb across Eddie’s cheek, brushing away the suds. His breathing stops altogether when his hand lingers a moment too long.
New beginnings are also found in the kitchen, heavy palpitations bleeding from the sink onto the dining table. Anticipation exists between the tiles, melting the glue he’s used to desperately hold himself together. Buck plays music while he cooks, varying from swing to classic rock. On the good days he sings, out of key, but he sings. He whistles along with the guitar or the saxophone or velvety voices he doesn’t dare to replicate. Buck dances too, waiting for songs to end and timers to ring.
Anticipation flooded the room when he asked Eddie to dance along, a soft blues tune playing over the speaker. Hand to the waist, to the shoulder, hand draped in gentle hand. It was an easy choice; Buck leaned in and he leaned back, holding Eddie like he would never have the chance to do it again, kissing him like there was no sweeter air in the world. The first, “I love you,” was breathed against the counter, just above a whisper. “I always have,” followed shortly behind.
The brightest piece of his heart is held in Christopher’s hands. Rainbow carpets and terrariums, posters plastered on every wall, solar systems and galaxies hanging above. Buck pinned the mobile to the ceiling, Earth, Venus, and Mars dancing around each other, glowing as the room fades to black. The planets spin and spin just above his bed. It makes sense, really, that Buck would hang the stars for Chris.
Eddie didn’t decorate his room, unlike the rest of the house. No, the color, the light, the books lining every shelf, all chosen by Chris, constantly shifting as his interest wean and wane. He’s more than willing to provide, because who is he to deny an action figure on the dresser or plant on the windowsill?
His heart is full with Chris. His heart is empty in his bedroom. Everything Eddie has he gives to Chris. (Where else would it go?)
Barren walls and flat sheets. Empty walls, empty frames. Clock on the nightstand, a lamp on either side, nothing more. A dresser, a closet, it’s a bedroom, nothing more. Most days the curtains are drawn. Most days the door is kept shut. It’s best to keep this hidden, best to leave it bare. He had a rug once. Never managed to unroll it.
It functions as a space, that’s all he needs. Eddie sleeps, and sometimes he dreams. Sometimes he wakes in a sweat, sometimes his hands shake until he’s too exhausted to shake anymore. He resorts to self soothing then; counting ceiling tiles that don’t exist and pacing about the room until holes bleed through his socks.
Buck moved from the apartment to the couch, and eventually made his way to the bedroom. They started out two feet apart but always woke together, somehow making contact and swearing it meant nothing. Even in his sleep, he finds his way to Buck. (Of course it means something).
He first kisses Buck in the kitchen. He kisses him again in the bed. His bed, their bed. He sleeps with his head against Buck’s chest, this time with intent, counting beats instead of ceiling tiles as he sleeps, no sweeter lullaby to be heard. He sleeps through the night, no dreams at all. Buck opens the curtain when he wakes up. Eddie leaves it that way.
The changes are subtle at first, and Buck plays it off like it’s all accidental. “Your room has the best sunlight,” he says, moving plants from the kitchen to the dresser. The ivy cascades down the sides and the cactuses bloom in the new light. In the silence, his heart begins to beat again.
Buck covers his own nightstand with receipts and chargers and photos and reminders. “Printed this for myself,” he claims, filling a picture frame with him and Eddie and Chris, “but I made an extra copy.” He leaves it on Eddie’s side of the bed. It’s less and less barren each day.
The rug under the bed is a welcomed addition. Soft and full, Eddie doesn’t question where it came from. A mirror makes its way to the wall. He can count his scars in the reflection; two in the shoulders, one on the hip. Wrist and thigh, hand and head. With each day the sight is more bearable.
Buck ripped off the sheets, the dark navy sheets, and swapped them out for something brighter. He claims they’re softer, claims they’re more breathable, though Eddie knows the truth, the truth being that they’re lighter on his chest and make his heart beat even. One, two, three, he can climb out of bed each morning a little easier.
“Good morning,” Buck whispers, and Eddie, half awake, half dreaming, feels his lips brush against his temple before moving to the kitchen. One beat, two beats, three, he can climb out of bed each morning a little easier.

New songs analysis??
Yup! I'm rusty and I don't want this to get too long (but of course it will), so consider this a start, and informal collection of thoughts.
Some context that I'm working with: I'm not trying to know EVERYTHING about Notting Hill Carnival, but I did a quick google search about it. It began to take shape in the 1960s as a celebration of culture in the face of racial tension. It, from what I gather, brought people together in difficult times.
Fast forward to today, in the midst of a pandemic where outdoor concerts and festivals are struggling. That connection that you strengthen with a friend or form with a complete stranger is easily found, or if it is, it's formed at a distance, from across a screen or sheet of plexiglass. Fittingly, there's an uncertain, somewhat somber tone to the EP. Lyrics acknowledge the celebration ("play your song, we'll get along," "I am pretty, pretty, put you in a good mood") and the hesitancy and disorientation that comes from having your entire world disturbed by a significant event, and the unclear future that comes with it ("I been searchin', lookin' for a permanent reason // Out of sync with the seasons, not sure what I believe in," "I love carnival beers // It don't feel the same").
The tone of our world and by extension, this EP is fitting for the first music Gorillaz has released post-TLC. Because we all have that questions. What is there relationship like now? Specifically, what is the relationship between 2D and Murdoc? I presume it isn't too different. There's the hope, the optimism that they can reach a better understanding of one another, that there can be reconciliation and recovery, but it's weighed down by uncertainty, emotional exhaustion and distance.
It's going to be hard to analyze the lyrics without knowing who wrote them (watch Noodle or Russel wrote them lmao), but some quick thoughts, song-by-song:
Meanwhile: This is the one I've seen the most about thanks to the lyrics, "Do you really think I'd leave you?," and "Do you really think I'd forget you?"
Basically, I mostly agree. Those two lines, on their own, make me think of that they could have gone through 2D's head during TLC as he reached his hand out to Murdoc. However, the song seems pretty literal in that it's about being at carnival and not feeling the same way you did at previous carnivals. Still, I'd love to believe 2D wrote this because if you think of "carnival" as a stand-in for Murdoc's name, the song still makes sense. 2D's drinking beers with Murdoc, partying with Murdoc, dancing with Murdoc, and it's the same as it's always been, but it still doesn't feel the same. They're doing everything they used to do, trying to be what they were before SM, but it's not the same. Why? Because....so many reasons.
2Doc rating: 7/10 (10 being the most 2Doc)
Jimmy,Jimmy: On a personal note, I like this song! Let it be known here that greywindys like a new Gorillaz song, finally.
Anyhow, the lyrics remind me of Murdoc during SM1 a lot. The desire to be loved, yet running away from it - "And a burden, why is bein' loved so appealin'?" The loss of identity in response to his perceived loss of control over the band - "I been searchin', lookin' for a permanent reason //Out of sync with the seasons, not sure what I believe in," and "Now you're out of control and the lie you're livin' is a dead-end road."
I don't really have a clear 2Doc interpretation of this, other than the thought that if 2D wrote this, he was pretty observant and he took notes. I'm a sucker for 2D watching Murdoc while he isn't looking, so that's what I'm sticking with for now lol.
2Doc rating: 5/10
Déjà Vu- I like this one too! That's two songs!
This is the last song on the EP and also the most 2Doc of them all. I'll let the lyrics speak for themselves: "I got my time travel on from your distant past where I've always been with you // I got my time travel on from your distant past where I was always lovin' you."
Also, "Life is meant for living, if I do it again I'll do it with you," and "Baby we are perfectly imperfect, but that's what makes it you"
The lyrics also sound VERY 2D here. I chuckled at the seatbelt references and the new word creation ("creserted"). The verses sound like actual 2D dialogue "I like the future, but it's hard to get there," "My brain is creserted, that means I'm lost in the desert." Lmao? He also sounds so comfortable and sure of himself. I don't like neo-2D, but I like this 2D. If he wrote this song like I think he did and using it to not so subtly declare his forgiveness and willingness to try for a friendship or a relationship, then that's even better.
2Doc rating: 8/10
So, that’s my start! Other thoughts are always welcome.

我的世界守则 The Rules of My World: An Analysis
I came across this video while browsing Weibo last night. It was taken during Yibo's rehearsal for his 'The Rules of My World' performance. I've listened to the song countless times and I like it, the rhythm and all, and the dance. But as with many rap music, I don't pay attention to the lyrics. I suddenly realised I don't really know what the song is talking about, save for the few phrases that stood out. That sparked my interest and inspired today's post. I had previously done some analysis of Zhan's songs, so it's Yibo's turn.
Disclaimer: I am not a professional translator or lyricist. And obviously I'm not Yibo nor do I know him personally, so I can't say for sure what the song is really about. The following analysis is purely based on my personal interpretation. It has CPN components. Please skip if you don't believe that BJYXSZD.
'The Rules of My World' is the 2nd song that Yibo penned the lyrics to himself. The fact that he wrote the lyrics is significant and makes the song worth analysing. 2019's 'Wu Gan' was more 'inward-looking'; about Yibo expressing his own thoughts on navigating the entertainment industry. To me, 'The Rules of My World' is him making a statement, a stand, at the same time, he's sending a message to those he cares about - GG and his (real) fans. Yibo released this song on 30 Dec 2020. The timing is interesting cos it like he's summing up his sentiments based on the events that took place during the year. To outsiders, 2020 was a good year for Yibo. He had many endorsements, projects, high exposure, his commercial value rose. But in CPN reality, 2020 was terrible for so many reasons. GG's incident, him being overworked, crazy fan wars and antis etc etc..anyone who cares about Yibo would be delusional to think he had it good last year.
欢迎你们来加入我的世界 (You're welcome to join my world)
入场券上面有正义的光源 (There's a light of justice on the admission ticket)
DD is giving fans an open invitation to enter his world, to understand him as a person and not just an idol. And he also hopes that his world can bring some light to the fans' world, to bring some positivity, encouragement and guidance to them.
此生面对严厉又仁慈的一切 (In this life we'll face harshness but also kindness)
轻松一点,我们一起度过黑夜 (Just relax, together we'll overcome darkness)
In the entertainment world (or life in general), there will be ups and downs, criticisms and compliments. Regardless of what may come, we can overcome any challenges together. Darkness here could also refer to the antis who seem determined to bring GGDD down. This could be a message to fans - to tell them that they don't always have to rush to defend him, and they don't need to retaliate (aka fan wars). It could also be a message to GG, to make a stand of solidarity and to reassure GG that DD will face any challenges alongside him.
新的征途 (A new journey)
愚蠢的,不好相处 (These fools, they aren't easy to get along with)
愚蠢的,不会打住 (These fools, they won't stop)
但衬托明天更耀眼的路 (But they will set off a brighter path for tomorrow)
It was said that DD matured considerably after the 2*7 incident. Took up more responsibility, became more focused on his career and mindful of future advancements etc. Started to take on more serious acting projects and to shift his career trajectory towards something more sustainable and less 'idol'. The new journey could be a reference to this new path. The fools - the antis, those against GGDD - may have caused damage but their actions have also sparked off DD's desire to do better and to find his footing in the entertainment industry. He now has a clearer view of what he wants, the path he wants to take.
我是我的样子 (This is how I am)
我生来就固执 (I was born stubborn)
讲自己的故事 (I'll tell my own story)
活独特的气质 (Living my unique self)
Follow me, 找到自己的价值 (Follow me, find your own value)
不去迎合别人活 才会觉得有意思 (Life is interesting if you don't cater to others)
我的世界不退让 (It's my world I won't give in)
我的世界不退让 (It's my world I won't give in)
Here, DD is being assertive. This is me, I follow my own rules, I'll make my own decisions, I'll forge my own path, I won't be influenced, I won't give up on my beliefs. So antis, capitalists etc can f*ck off.
It could also be seen as an advice to his fans - to follow his lead and live their own lives. This is also something that GG has repeatedly said to fans - to focus on their own lives, personal relationships, studies, careers etc. Don't devote so much time on chasing idols, online fan wars etc.
阳光耀眼 (The sun is dazzling)
乐观地,走向前 (Just move forward with optimism)
阳光耀眼 (The sun is dazzling)
无所谓,多危险 (Doesn't matter how dangerous it is)
阳光耀眼 (The sun is dazzling)
这是我的世界 (This is my world)
我世界的守则,不许你诡辩 (These are the rules of my world, I won't allow any sophistry)
I see this as DD's words of encouragement, to himself and to GG. Despite all the challenges and hardship, darkness will pass and the sun will come out eventually. And it's shining brightly, there is hope left in this world, there's is much to look forward to. So don't fear, be brave and forge ahead.
Sophistry: the use of clever but false arguments, especially with the intention of deceiving
Poor DD is always hit with industry rumours, about him dating his co-stars etc. Last year, someone even made a false police report against him. Just look at the number of statements his company had to put out. There have also always been ongoing rumours about rivalry between GGDD, tales of backstabbing etc, especially in 2020 at the height of the incident. DD is saying that this is his life, his world. No one knows better than the both of them. So to those who don't know better but continue to spew nonsense about his life and relationships and spread hate, know that I don't care about your antics, they don't hurt me but I won't tolerate them as well.
在我世界行走 (Walking in my world)
什么人生主题你透露 (What kind of life theme do you envisage)
是胆大勇猛所向披靡 (Is it to be bold, courageous and invincible)
或胆小逃避钻进壳里 (Or to be timid and escape into your shell)
喧闹倾诉众人party (Is it to pour out your troubles at a rowdy party)
寂寞相思不停地哭泣 (Or to cry silently non-stop out of loneliness and love-sickness)
都欢迎你来我这里 (All are welcome)
只要跟从自己的内心 (So long as you follow your heart)
跟限制和噪音 说一声 bang bang (I'll say 'Bang Bang' to restriction and noises)
怪兽都退散 (Monsters, be gone)
What kind of person am I in your eyes? The cool guy or soft sweet babie Yibo? Here, DD is acknowledging that the public has many different perceptions of him, and fans love different personas of him and he's ok with that. But if you love him, then let him be. Don't try to restrict him, don't quarrel or force him into a certain mould of your preference. He won't hesitate to shoot the haters (monsters) down.
迈出轻盈的步伐 (Take a light step forward)
一声令下 (With a single command)
来宣布 告别孤勇 (To announce a farewell to having to fight alone)
On this new path, with a new-found realisation of what he wants, DD is clear of what he wants to achieve and he is no longer burdened by fear, uncertainties etc. Both GGDD now have each other by their sides, they share a common purpose as they navigate the intricacies of the entertainment industry together and work their way to the top. And I think this is something that we're seeing more in the fandom since end 2020 - GGDD seemingly becoming more bold in their actions and messages they put out (silent or otherwise).
想要做盘旋的龙 (Wanna be a hovering dragon)
还想做懒散的虫 (Or a lazy worm)
别打扰我 走开 没空 (Don't bother me, go away, I have no time for that)
In public, DD is that proud and confident king. He's not a pushover. But behind the cameras, he just wants to chill and relax (and play games). Please don't bother me, give me some privacy to lead my own life, don't tell me what I can or cannot do.
Cue DD's message. He meant it.
Tumblr media
Follow me, 找到自己的价值 (Follow me, find your own value)
不去迎合别人活 才会觉得有意思 (Life is interesting if you don't cater to others)
我们永远不退让 (We will never give in)
我们永远不退让 (We will never give in)
This is a repetition of the earlier verse but what has changed is the last 2 lines. From <It's my world I won't give in>, DD now says <We will never give in>. This was actually the first thing that sparked off my CPN, and hinted to me that this song concerns GG in some ways. Who's We? We all know how GGDD almost always use the word 'we' in their CQL promo interviews and bts, as though they come as a package and all views represent both of them as a entity. This also echoes the earlier sentiments - both of them, after the 2020 incident, have developed a steely resolve. They won't let the antis or challenges or societal views hold them back anymore. Their world, their rules. They will fight for their rights and what they believe in, and they are determined to reach their goals.
阳光耀眼 (The sun is dazzling)
乐观地 走向前 (Just move forward with optimism)
阳光耀眼 (The sun is dazzling)
无所谓 多危险 (Doesn't matter how dangerous it is)
阳光耀眼 (The sun is dazzling)
这是我的世界 (This is my world)
我们的世界不会被改变 (Our world will never be changed)
Again, similar to the above 'we' example. From this part of the song onwards, DD is referring to them both. The last line could also be viewed as an affirmation of GGDD's commitment to each other. Whatever is it, our relationship will not change. We will go through it all together.
Don‘t stop, get it, get it
Let me see you work up on it
Don’t stop, get it, get it
Let me see you all up on it
Let me see you work up on it
Don‘t stop, get it, get it
Don't stop
Hey
I interpret this as DD's words of encouragement to GG. Like don't stop fighting, continue to work hard towards your (our) goals. Go for it, you can do it!
在我的世界 (In my world)
本能很关键 (Instinct is the key)
坚持自己 (Stay true to yourself)
就是你们的世界 (It is your world)
DD's parting words to fans: to stay true to oneself, to build and enrich your own worlds, to fight for your goals, like how he is trying.
Well, I had fun working on this. Maybe I'll do Wu Gan another time. Reminded me of literature class during my schooling days, although I never did Chinese literature back then. Feel free to share your thoughts on the song with me. =D
