Cottagecore/Self-Reliant/Self-Sufficient S/O with a green thumb 👍 with Carrie White, Norman Bates, Candyman, Bishop, and Anton Chigurh.
Carrie
Tumblr media
She absolutely loves this idea and lifestyle, but can't really for the life of her keep a plant alive. As much as she tries it just doesn't flourish as much as she wants and it makes her a bit sad. Just another thing to the list that she can't seem to do right
Being able to watch you light up so many rooms with so many different plants, some she's never seen or heard of before, amazes her. She loves the look and spends a lot of her days sitting and doing small chores or reading in your plant room
They make her unbelievably bright and happy and she loves to learn about each plant you have when you tend to it and will surprise you by doing her own research
She remembers just about everything you tell her about the plants and tries her best to gift you some smaller ones she finds when she's out
I believe that Carrie would absolutely be a trinket collector and would have the best days and fun going out with you to the nearby lakes and ponds for picnics or walks. Rocks and pebbles, pressed leaves and flowers, all that and more
Norman
Tumblr media
It's good to have hobbies and interest, especially when Norman happens to be busy most of the day. Thankfully for him, however, your hobbies are ones that he can keep up with as well.
I'm certain Norman is a bit of a green thumb as well, he has to keep up with the property somehow. He'll be forever grateful if you ever want to pitch in for him to get some work throughout the day out so he has more time to spend with you, even if that time is gardening
It's good for you to be keeping him up to date as well. While your interesting aesthetic isn't something he's used to seeing it certainly does liven up anywhere you go. Norman doesn't change things up too often, so he really needs a wardrobe change
When he isn't bugging you too often though, he does spend his time making delicate and floral based taxidermy for you of various small animals. A lot of the design choices come from flowers and plants he's heard that you're fond of or some he's plucked behind your back
Candyman
Tumblr media
Daniel thinks it's a beautiful thing that you're able to be enough for yourself, especially when he can't be there constantly. Not like he could do much for you anyways, but you're still well off.
He's a man of taste and is pretty well versed in your plants and how to help you tend to them, but occasionally loves to hear your input and advice on doing so. It's one of his favorite pass times with you, making him feel at peace for the first time in a very, very long time
It does happen to make his chest rumble a little bit, seeing as his bees desperately want to get out and smell some fresh flowers for once. Within a certain distance from you you'll be able to hear the anxious humming and buzzing of all of them underneath his coat
As if he didn't do this often anyways, he almost always brings you home flowers as often as he can, but mainly the types you can replant/pot if you'd like to keep them and frequently will take you on dates that rely on the weather. Walks and picnics secluded in the forest are his preferred places. If you thrive, he thrives
Of course, he's also always looking forward to your homemade, organic treats and goodies on the way there
Bishop
Tumblr media
The amount of relief that Bishop has taken off of his shoulders is immeasurable. You'd be surprised, or not, to learn that not a lot of Earth plants can survive on the ship, even with 24/7 monitoring and care. Most of the plants you see in the corridors and offices of the ships are either fake to easy the homesick epidemic floating around or plants from various other planets
Bishop himself is decently knowledgeable on the various plant and vegetation on the ship and he's more than happy to sit and teach you the ups and downs of space greens. It's most important on this ship to know how to be self reliant, especially when it's such a dangerous area to be stuffed into. A lot of the things in and around this ship can kill you, so his teachings are mandatory
There happens to be a lack of botanists on the ship that Bishop would be more than happy to train right next to him; even more so with it being you. And as much as he appreciates your comfy style and personality, he does have to hand you a typical lab uniform with a pitiful smile
Your work ethic is something that he swoons over the moment you do decide to work next to him. Bishop may seem like he's got a stick stuck up his ass, but no one gives him the time of day to figure out that she shows love and appreciation differently, especially when it comes to talking data and interests with you. You'll notice one of his small gestures is giving you itty bitty foreign plants that the two of you have been studying to see if you can keep it alive
Anton
Tumblr media
Well you certainly look... interesting. You're an odd one, but it's a bit refreshing to come back home to after however long he's been away. There is never typically an element of surprise that will be able to catch him off guard, but seeing what new project you're up to every time he sees you if a close contender
He's more than relieved for you to be so self-reliant and be able to keep such thriving gardens and structure, it gives him less to worry about. You'd think he wouldn't have any cares in the world, but you'd be surprised
You constantly send him on his way with treats and small foods that you swear he needs; when was the last time you say him eat with your own eyes? Exactly, and it's hard to have him for long enough to enjoy a nice warm dinner
Anton doesn't speak much on his work life or about home life in general, but doesn't mind your talk. He appreciates your lack of small talk and tendency to jump right into filling him in on what's been going on since he's been gone, what you've been growing, clothes you've made, and small new additions to the home you've made. He'll blankly smile down at you in the garden as you crouch down and show him the growth and greens, inching to the left every so often to look at the other patches down the line

something special
elide x lorcan + rowan x aelin, modern au, proposal/first date fluff, word count: 3580
Rowan raced around the apartment, trying to find something. Lorcan watched him and laughed under his breath, carelessly flipping through his fire department’s monthly magazine. “Lor, come on, man, tell me where it is!”
“I don’t know what it is and I don’t care where it is,” he replied drily, humming into Elide’s good evening kiss as she got home from work, “Evening, gorgeous.”
The nurse laughed warmly and patted his chest, “Hi, baby. You’re looking mighty fine tonight.” She ran an appreciative look over him, tapping her acrylic nail over her bottom lip.
Rowan scowled at his roommate’s girlfriend and his roommate’s salutations. He pointed at them and switched his finger back and forth, “Not loving this right now. E, do you know where my tie is? The dark blue one.”
Elide made a face and sat on the arm of Lorcan’s chair, “The blue one, why that one?” She absentmindedly began to toy with Lorcan’s hair. “We learned that it shortens your jaw. Wear the green one, it’s on top of Lorcan’s drawer.”
He took a step towards Lorcan’s room and paused, “Why?”
“We needed it. Don’t worry, we cleaned it.” Lorcan laughed wickedly, pulling her into his lap and nipped at the skin beneath her jaw. Elide rolled her eyes and shoved his face away, “I was in the ER all day, someone barfed on me and I can still feel it.”
Her boyfriend wrinkled his nose and pushed her away, “Yucky.” Elide patted his cheek and walked away into his bedroom to put her things away. “So, Ro, when’s this girl getting here?”
“8 o’clock, why?”
“Um… it’s seven-fifty five now,” Lorcan answered, not daring to move, not even flipping the page as Rowan skidded out.
“What, no, I checked the clock, I have an hour,” he said.
Lorcan looked up at him and had the decency to fake a wince. Rowan knew his sadistic, nihilist brain couldn’t conceive of emotion. “The clock may have… paused in the power outage last weekend and I may or may not have noticed but put off… switching back. I’m so sorry, Ro. Really, man, I’m so sorry.”
“I’m going to kill you,” the silver-blond man promised. “Where’s my jacket?”
“I hung it on your closet door, I swear.”
Rowan raced in, just as the buzzer sounded and that brilliant, glorious voice spoke up, “Hello, Rowan? It’s Aelin.”
“Let her up but do not talk to her.”
Elide clicked her tongue as she padded out of her boyfriend’s room and walked to the door, “I got it, get your jacket, dear.” She sighed and winked at Lorcan as she pressed the talk button, “Hey, Aelin, come up.” She clicked the unlocking button and pranced over to the kitchen, “L, what do you want to do for dinner? I’m down for whatever.” The petite brunette puttered around the kitchen in her silk robe, getting her tea ready before her shower. She filled the tea kettle and put it on the burner, then perused the collection of teas they had solely for her use.
“I’ll cook,” Lorcan said, a tad too coolly.
“Are you sure? Remember when you burnt your hair?”
He snapped his teeth, “It’ll be fine.”
Elide laughed softly and walked behind his couch as she watered the plants she had brought to ‘liven up’ their apartment. She bent and kissed the top of his head, “Ok, love. You can cook.”
He smiled and then someone knocked on the door. “Let me get that!” Rowan shouted desperately. Elide cackled gleefully and put the watering cup down, bounding over to the door and quickly opening it.
“Hello, you must be Aelin.”
The blonde woman was drop-dead gorgeous. Long, tanned legs that went on for miles, long golden hair that fell in waves. Big, blue eyes with fiery centres of gold, framed by curled lashes, lengthened by mascara. Her plump lips curled into a smitten, giddy grin, bright white teeth with a little gap sinking into her bottom lip. “Yeah, that’s me,” she laughed. “And you must be Elide, the roommate’s girlfriend, I’m hoping?”
Elide laughed and opened the door wider, “Yes, that’s me. Lorcan’s over there, the one with the frown.” Aelin looked over Elide’s shoulder and laughed, no doubt amused by Lorcan’s disgruntled frown. “Ro’s just finishing up, do you want some tea?”
“Oh, I’d lo–”
“Oh, I don’t think we have time for that,” Rowan said as he hurried out and all but shoved Elide out of the way. Elide gasped and returned to Lorcan’s warm embrace for comfort.
“He’s so mean,” she whispered, curling into his lap.
Lorcan hummed and wrapped his arms around her, “He is. I don’t know,” he started to raise his voice, “why a nice gal like Aelin would go out with such a bully.”
Rowan frowned and his eyes promised a slow, painful death for the both of them. The dark couple laughed to themselves and relaxed into each other. “What a funny joke. Aelin, should we go?”
The golden girl laughed warmly, her hand lifting to rest against his chest, “Of course. It was lovely to meet you, Elide, I’ll have to come by for tea someday. It was very nice to meet you too, Mr. Frowny Face.”
Lorcan gasped in offence and narrowed his glare at Aelin as Rowan walked them out. Elide laughed and stood up, walking towards the bathroom, her hips swinging side to side, “Anything I can do to… turn that frown upside down?”
He grinned and followed her into the bathroom, not bothering to close the door behind them, “Yeah, a couple things, princess.”
 ☽ ☼ ☾
Great, huge butterflies flapped around her stomach. Aelin smiled nervously at Rowan as he guided her towards their table, her cheeks pinking. “I love this restaurant,” she said, biting her inner cheek as she slid into her seat and adjusted it to her liking. She pushed her hair off her shoulder and rested her chin on her clasped hands.
Rowan sat down and unbuttoned his jacket. He smiled, relief shining in his eyes. Aelin adored the fact that he was as nervous as she and tucked that little bit of pride into her fluttering heart. “I’m glad. I have to admit, I was a little bit nervous about what to pick.” He pulled the menu towards him and looked through it, “What do you reccomend?”
“Oh, I don’t know,” Aelin hummed and opened the menu. “It’s all divine. All I know is we must split the chocolate hazelnut cake. It’s my favourite.” Her eyes sparkled at him over the rim of the slim folder. “Shouldn’t we?”
“Of course,” he said, his own cheeks blushing. “I’d love to.”
Aelin hummed happily and sighed, “Oh, I think we’ll get the fried sage leaves to start and then the ossobuco. What about you?”
Rowan closed his menu and smoothed his hands down his legs, “I’m going to get the veal saltimbocca.”
“Oh, if you do, I insist on stealing a bite.” She tilted her head to the side, her eyes on his, “Will you let me?”
Something dropped his stomach and he licked his lips, “Yes. I think I just might.”
Aelin laughed coyly and sipped her water, leaning back in her chair, now exactly where his gaze would fall in her metallic gold silk tank top. Her eyes tracked their waiter as he made his way back to them, “Hello, good sir.”
The young man, his hair a curly mop of brown locks, grinned, “Hello. Can I offer you our wine menu?”
They looked at each other.
Do we dare, Mr. Whitethorn?
A smirk curled his rosy lips.
I say we do.
Aelin scrunched her nose in a delighted way and reached her hand out for it, “Yes, please.” She looked through, scrutinising and pensive. After a golden, wonderful moment, Aelin looked up at him, “Barolo?”
Rowan nodded, feeling at a loss when it came to wines. The waiter nodded and swept away. Aelin looked like him and sat up, “So, tell me about your roommates. They seem to be in that honeymoon phase - are they a new couple?”
Rowan laughed quietly, “Oh, gods, no. No,” he cleared his throat, “they met in kindergarten and hated each other all the way through high school. They’re both military brats and somehow always got sent to the same posts.” He tapped his finger on the table, “They went away for university and second year, Elide transferred here and they met again and… the rest is history. They’re- Lorcan’s asking her to marry him right now, actually.”
Aelin laughed, her hand over her mouth, “Oh my gods, that’s amazing. Oh, I hope she says yes. They’re adorable together.” She paused. “Please don’t tell him I said that. I can always use another nemesis.”
“Yes, well, I assume I will get a very loud text any minute now with the good news.”
She clapped her hands, “Good.” At that moment, their waiter - Luca - came back with the bottle of wine and glasses. He poured Aelin a sample and waited as she sipped and tasted. She nodded and flashed Rowan a wide smile. Luca poured them both glasses and left it on a stand before he blended into the shadows. “So, what shall we toast to?”
Rowan knew it was cheesy and even still he said: “To… love. Love old and… love new.”
Aelin stared at him with heat clouding her eyes, “To love old and love new.”
 ☽ ☼ ☾
Lorcan hummed as Elide hopped off the counter and pulled his shirt over her head. “Baby, no.”
His girlfriend laughed and padded out of the bathroom, “My kettle has been boiling for over an hour, I bet all the water’s gone.” Lorcan tugged on his previously discarded sweat shorts and pushed his damp hair back.
He walked out to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, his chin on her head, “I love you, Lochan.”
She hummed, “And I love you, Salvaterre.” Elide shoved him with her elbow as she moved for the honey, “Move, beastie.” Lorcan laughed and stepped back. He leaned against the counter in front of the dishwasher and watched her move to fetch her things.
Elide turned crossly, evidently annoyed by his eyes on her, and frowned at his smile, “What, what’s the smile for?”
“What smile?” he said through his grin.
She clicked her tongue and abandoned her tea to cross her arms, “That smile.” Lorcan pushed off the counter and crossed over to her, halfway bending to sweep her into a long hug. Elide sighed contently and slid her arms around his shoulders, her body melting into him. “Hi.”
“Hi,” he said, holding her tight and rubbing her back. For months, he’d planned what he was going to say. He’d proposed to Rowan more times than he could count. It had been perfect and as he slid the ring box out of his pocket and took a step backwards, he couldn’t believe he was doing it like this.
Elide opened her mouth to ask him why he stopped hugging her, but then her eyes landed on the sparkling ruby engagement ring and all she could say was: “Oh, love.” She reached for his hand, tears lining her eyes as he smiled and lifted their joined hands to his heart.
“El… I love you. And I had a whole speech prepared and when I proposed to Rowan, he almost cried, but, fuck, I love you so much and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, so,” Lorcan smoothly lowered onto his knee, “will you marry me?”
“Of course, you idiot!”
 ☽ ☼ ☾
Aelin hummed delightedly as a plate carrying a piece of chocolate-hazelnut cake was placed in the middle of the table. She twirled her fork and ruefully pushed the plate closer to him, “Do you want the first bite?”
Rowan grinned, “Please, I know you’ve been looking forward to it. It’s yours.”
The woman beamed and dug in, her eyes falling half shut. She moaned softly and Rowan took a long sip of his ice water. “It’s so good,” Aelin said, taking another bite and then another. “I would eat this for every meal if I could.”
His phone dinged subtly from his pocket. Aelin saw him shift and buzzed in her seat, “Well? What’s the news?”
Rowan smiled and pulled it out of his pocket. The text was sent from Lorcan’s phone, but it was Elide who wrote it.
bastard: i said yes!!
Attached, Elide had sent a selfie with her hand, showing off the ring. The picture cut off most of Lorcan’s face, showing just his lips pressed to her temple. Rowan had never seen her smile this widely.
He showed his phone to Aelin, who read the text and looked at the picture. She smiled, “That’s so sweet. I’m surprised Lorcan’s taste in jewellery is that good, that ring is gorgeous.”
“I don’t like to toot my own horn, but I did help him pick it out,” Rowan said in a joking manner. Usually, he didn’t find it this easy to talk to someone - certainly not someone like Aelin. She was a barely tamed wildfire and he was certain many had been burned before him. For some reason, though, he didn’t feel like he would be like them.
Aelin’s eyes glittered, “So, you have a lovely taste in pretty, sparkly things, do you? I might just have to remember that for later.” She lifted her wine glass and sipped delicately.
“Later? We have a later now?”
She put her glass down and ran a fingertip over the rim, “Well, I certainly hope so. I’d hate to dress my best and try this hard all for one meaningless dinner.”
Rowan hummed, smiling softly, “It would be such a shame, Ms. Ashryver-Galathynius.”
“Indeed it would.”
Within the next five minutes, the cake had been devoured and they split the bill after Aelin’s fierce insistence. After, Rowan stood to help her into her coat and Aelin dipped to the bathroom as he waited by the entrance.
When she walked out, unaware of every eye in the restaurant on her, Aelin smiled at him, the tip of her pink tongue poking between her teeth. She slipped her hand into his elbow, “Do you want to take a walk? The Florine is just a few blocks away, we could talk.”
Rowan’s brows raised, almost surprised that she had more to say. Elide would laugh and say that he was a cranky, old bastard, but Rowan had never spoken more with another human being. Aelin’s face fell slightly at his look of reproach and her brow crinkled, “What is it? Do you have to be somewhere?”
“No, no, Aelin,” he laughed self-consciously. “I’ve never talked this much and I’m just a bit… shocked that you have more to say.” His cheeks heated.
Aelin laughed merrily and pulled him outside, sliding her hand down to his, “You’re very cute. C’mon, I’m sure we can weasel a few more words from you. And besides,” she looked up at the sky, “the sky is beautiful by the river.”
She started to walk and in that moment, Rowan decided he would follow her to the ends of the earth.
 ☽ ☼ ☾
Night had fallen long ago.
Aelin stood on her building’s stoop, a few steps above Rowan so that they were eye to eye. She smiled a small smile, her face soft and open. “I had a lovely time tonight, Rowan.” Casually, she reached out and traced her finger over the lapel of his overcoat. “Would you like to get coffee tomorrow, or something?”
Rowan nodded, his hands stuffed into his pants pockets, “I’d love to.”
“Good,” she said. Aelin shifted closer to him, until they were almost sharing a breath. Rowan swallowed once, but he didn’t close the distance to kiss her. Her laugh was hoarse and slightly choked, “So, what do I have to do to get you to kiss me? I’m just wondering.”
He coughed, slightly startled, “Um… just- exactly that.” Aelin smiled triumphantly and laughed softly as he slid his arm around her waist and pulled her into him. Rowan dipped her dramatically and waited for a moment before he pressed a slow, dizzying kiss to her lips.
Aelin gasped softly and gripped his biceps, kissing him back with that fiery passion he’d come to learn she applied to everything in her life.
When they came up for air, their breaths puffing between them, her eyes were wide. Her reddened lips curved to form a perfectly soft, “Oh.”
Rowan laughed huskily, “Yeah, that was… wow.” He took a step backwards, his hands lingering on her waist. “I should let you go now. It’s late and I have a coffee date tomorrow morning.”
Aelin laughed brightly and pressed a kiss to his cheek, “Very gentlemanly of you.” She stepped backwards, towards the front entrance. Aelin pulled the keys out of her pocket and waved her fingers at him as Rowan nodded his head and walked down to the sidewalk. “Goodnight, Rowan.”
“Sweet dreams, Aelin.”
 ☽ ☼ ☾
Her ring sparkled in the living room light. Elide bit back the giddy grin threatening to erupt over her face and turned her face to her boy- fiancé. She cupped his face in her hands and kissed him, “I love you.”
Lorcan grinned and gave into her sweet kisses. He slid his hands to the small of her back and pressed her closer to him, “I love you too, princess.” She hummed lowly and pulled away, tracing her fingertips over his cheekbones.
She laughed a bit, “Do you remember the first day we met?”
Lorcan scoffed, “Yeah, no doy.”
Elide rolled her eyes and shook her head, “You’re ridiculous. I’m trying to be sweet and you say no doy like an idiot.” Lorcan laughed, his head tipping back. Elide smacked his chest and twisted so that her back was against his front.
They barely fit on the shitty little couch Lorcan and Rowan still had from university. It was old and beyond ruined, but it was the most comfortable thing on the planet. Lorcan wrapped his arms around her waist and rested his hand on her side, his thumb soothing a circle over her ribcage. “It was the first day of kindergarten. You were wearing two braids with a red ribbon around your head and you had on overalls with a purple shirt.”
She smiled, “Your hair was braided and you were wearing a black t-shirt with a grizzly bear on it and jeans.” Elide tilted her head up to teasingly glare at him, “You stole my good marker.”
He made a pleased noise in the back of his throat, “And fourteen years later, you stole my heart.”
“That I did,” Elide replied, kissing the side of his neck. Lorcan lifted her left hand and they both stared at the glittering engagement ring. “I can’t believe we’re getting married.”
Lorcan grinned and kissed the side of her head, “Well, believe it, love.”
She laughed and settled back into his arms, “We’ve come a very long way, haven’t we?”
“Yes,” Lorcan agreed, wrapping her further in his arms, “we have.”
They fell into a warm, comforting silence, perfectly at ease to lay together and not say a word. Nothing needed to be said.
A few minutes later, when Elide was slowly drifting off, safe and warm in his arms, the front door opened. She sat up, smiling expectantly at Rowan, “Well?” Lorcan shifted beneath her and sat up too. “How was it?”
Rowan’s cheeks were pinked, not just from the cold night. “Um, it went well, yeah.” He shrugged his overcoat off and hung it up on the coat rack. Without looking back at the couple, he spoke while he put his shoes away, “We’re getting coffee tomorrow.”
Elide clapped her hands, “Ooh, yay. It’s because of the green tie.”
Rowan rolled his eyes and walked into the kitchen. He emerged with three bottles of beer, “I think I deserve a little credit. She didn’t very well kiss my tie.”
Elide cackled and took the beer he offered to her, her ring shining. “Very nicely done, Ro.” She settled back against Lorcan and sipped from her bottle, waiting for him to notice something.
Rowan handed Lorcan his drink and finally saw Elide’s ring, “Congratulations, you two. Very nicely done, Lor.”
His best friend smiled softly at the girl he loved, “Thanks, man.” Rowan sat down in the armchair, grinning at the two of them. “So, it really went well?”
“Yeah, yeah.”
Elide giggled at his face, “Oh, you’re so smitten.”
Lorcan hummed in agreement and drank his beer, “Aw, look, he’s blushing.” Elide hooted and laughed harder when Rowan grumbled and stood up, muttering something about I don’t have to sit here and take this. “Babe, our boy’s all grown up. Soon he’s going to settle down, get married, have a brood of unruly children…”
Elide stood up and walked over to Rowan, holding her arms out for a conciliatory hug, “Oh, c’mere, honey, we’re just joking.” Rowan pouted and accepted her embrace, flipping Lorcan off behind her back. The dark haired woman pulled away slightly, her eyes narrowed inquisitively, “You really like her, don’t you?”
“Yeah,” Rowan mumbled, blushing again. “She’s… kinda completely amazing.”
“Oh, is she something special?”
“Yeah,” Rowan said, confident and sure. “She is.”
And she was.

plant dads sam and bucky fic that absolutely no one asked for. you can read this as a one-shot but it’s part of a longer thing i’ll post on ao3 only when it’s complete. if youre curious, this is what the pothos (heart-shaped leaves) looks like. the other plant is a crimson queen hoya. reposting for the evening crowd :)
It starts with a couple of houseplants in the corner of his living room. Sam doesn’t even notice them at first, nondescript as they are, hanging from one of the windows behind his couch. One of them has long, heart-shaped leaves with splashes of white over them while the other has waxy green leaves with white accents around the edges.
Huh.
He doesn’t think much of it initially – assumes Sarah wanted to liven up the space – but then he finds Bucky honest-to-god humming to himself one morning while tending to the plants with a bright blue watering can.
“So you’re a horticulturist now, huh?” Sam asks.
Bucky turns around with a little ‘oh’ under his breath and sleep still weighing heavy on his eyes. Sam tries not to pay attention to how cute he looks with his hair all sleep-tousled and unkempt.
“I like ‘em,” Bucky says softly. “Sarah said I could set up by the windows.”
“This a new thing?” Sam asks, feeling the heart-shaped leaves between the pads of his fingers. The plants are honestly a nice touch. “I didn’t know you were into houseplants.”
Bucky shrugs. “I had a lot of time in Wakanda. New hobbies, you know? Didn’t have much time in New York, but I figured now’s as good a time as any.”
There’s no trace of a frown or scowl or glare in the lines of Bucky’s face. This, combined with how soft he looks in his sweats and ratty t-shirt, makes it impossible to ignore just how young and unguarded Bucky is here. In Louisiana. In Sam’s home. It’s hard for Sam not to be struck by the domesticity of it all.
The thing is, though, that it’s such a far cry from normal that Sam’s really not sure how to process it. On the surface, he’s glad Bucky’s managed to carve out a slice of happiness for himself – the guy deserves it after all he’s been through. It’s just that this burgeoning friendship with Bucky is another thing to add to the list of sudden changes in his life that threatens to wash over him like a yawning tide.
And it’s taken Sam a minute to realize it, but he’s not the kind of person who necessarily does well with change. He’d been running through the motions after he’d lost Riley. Sure, he’d rolled with the punches just fine when Steve had come calling for help, running from HYDRA, then the U.S. government, even fighting for the fate of the universe, but he’d just been trading one problem for another. The Paul & Darlene for his wings, the failing family business for his fugitive status, not to mention his deteriorating relationship with Sarah and the boys for an intergalactic war with Thanos.
Nothing had been easy once he’d settled back down in Delacroix, but they’d been steady, is the thing. He’d had his contract with the Air Force and he’d known what he’d had to do to get the business back on its feet. It’d been a shitty hand he and Sarah had been dealt – had been for as long as they’d been alive – but Sam had been present. Finally with the resolve to deal with his issues head-on and prove to Sarah that he wouldn’t be disappearing again.
And then Germany happened. Madripoor, Riga, New York.
In the heat of battle, with the adrenaline pumping and the cameras rolling, it’d been easy to step fully into the title that came with the shield. Afterwards, though? When the celebrations are over and the high wears off, he’s left feeling jittery and uncertain. It’s not only the gaze of an entire country bearing down upon him, but the fear that he’s falling into old ways again. That whatever the stars and stripes have on the horizon for him will break this tenuous peace he finally has in Delacroix.
It occurs to him that maybe he deserves to have his cake and eat it, too. Just this once. He wonders what happiness would look like. How it would feel to successfully juggle his duties as Captain America with his commitments to his community and family. Maybe even start a family of his own one day.
And of course, there’s Bucky. Their friendship is undeniably different after the trials of the past month – the good kind of different. Yet it’s something precious that Sam can privately admit to himself he doesn’t want to lose, and in that sense it’s just another new thing he’s got to learn to navigate around.
For now, though, he can enjoy this quiet moment with Bucky when there’s no one but family around to scrutinize their every movement.
“You know,” Sam says lightly, “I’ve always wanted some houseplants. Seemed like the adult thing to do.” It’d never been possible before, what with him running from war to battle to catastrophe, but maybe now is as good a time as any for a fresh start.
Bucky’s eyes light up like a pair of firecrackers, bright and eager and excited, and it leaves Sam reeling in the humanity of it. He’s not sure there’s anyone alive right now who’s ever seen Bucky like this.
“Here,” Bucky says, pulling a pair of small garden shears out of God knows where and beginning to cut up a vine on the heart-shaped plant. “This one’s called a pothos. Marble queen pothos.”
He holds up one of the cuttings for Sam to inspect. “See the little green nub on the stem?”
Sam dutifully moves in closer for a better look.
“That’s a node. As long as you’ve got one of ‘em on a cutting, it’ll grow a brand new plant from there.”
“Huh. That’s neat.”
“The white marbling is actually a genetic mutation,” Bucky continues. His voice is raspy from sleep, and him being a geek about plants of all things shouldn’t be so endearing, but it is. “So you need to have the white streaks over the node if you want the marbling to continue.”
“What’re these little growths next to the node?” Sam asks.
“Oh,” Bucky says with a little huff of excitement. “Those are aerial roots. In the wild, the plants use ‘em to anchor to trees and grow above the tree cover, but in soil they’ll just become the new root system for the cutting.”
“Man, what the hell,” Sam says, laughing.
“What?”
“How is this the first I’m learning of your green thumb?”
“There’s lots of things you don’t know about me,” Bucky says, but there’s no heat behind it. “Besides, it’s not like I’ve had time for hobbies since getting de-iced.”
Sam snorts. That was the truth, wasn’t it?
“Can you get the potting mix?” Bucky asks. “I put it in the storage closet.”
He’s already puttering around with an old takeout container while Sam heads over to get the soil. It should probably be a little more jarring to Sam that Bucky’s only been here for a week and he’s already populated the little closet with an array of gardening tools. There’s the bag of potting mix, a sack of dusty white pebbles labeled ‘horticultural perlite’, more pruning shears, and a large assortment of plastic and clay pots. When had Bucky even had the time to get all of this?
He returns with the mix and wordlessly passes it to Bucky, who fills in the plastic container with the soil, sticks the little cuttings right in, and hands the whole thing over to Sam.
“It’s yours,” Bucky says with an air of satisfaction. “Once the cuttings begin to root, they’ll grow new leaves. You just gotta keep the soil moist for the first couple of weeks.”
“You know I don't know the first thing about plants, right?” Sam says, amused.
“That’s what you’ve got me for.” Bucky flashes him a blinding grin. It’s the kind of declaration that should feel more significant than it actually does in the moment.
“Lucky me.”
“Lucky you’ve got south-facing windows, more like. Can’t really get this in New York without all the high rises blocking out the sun.”
Right. Sam enjoys city life as much as the next guy, but nothing beats the full warmth of the Louisiana sun.
“I’d water them every other day to start, and we can adjust from there,” Bucky says, nodding at the new plant in Sam’s hands.
We. Sam can’t say he’s as enthusiastic as Bucky about growing houseplants from scratch, but he does like the idea of the two of them having a project that’s just for them. And there’s something just a little poetic about spawning new life from practically nothing. A new beginning to go along with their new friendship – this new chapter of both of their lives. Sam could get behind that. He sets a reminder on his phone so he doesn’t forget to water the pothos.

When Virgil first gave Deceit the cactus it was supposed to be thinly veiled insult. Something to remind the side that while Thomas was coming to terms with him, what he and Virgil had was not salvageable.
It wasn’t even like he went out of his way for it either: Patton had gifted him the little cactus a few weeks after his official coronation to the Light Side and Virgil had accidentally killed it the way he killed most plants. So a little regifting and he handed over the witted falling apart cactus to Deceit the day after the liar had managed to finally get his points across to Thomas.
“A cactus?” Deceit said slowly eyeing the withering plant.
“Yeah,” Virgil said already turned around and heading back off into the blurry grey fog that separated all their rooms. Virgil liked to point out it used to be a Black Fog between all the dark sides’ rooms, shrouding them in darkness so thick it made it dangerous to go anywhere. Especially when one remembered that Remus liked to rearrange the entire mindscape and often left trapped doors anywhere he pleased, along with the booby traps, false staircases, maze of mirrors, and sometimes even that shark pit. When Virgil switched to the Light side he had been even more suspicious of the white fog that swished around the place like little clouds. The floors didn’t rearrange themselves but any time Virgil left his room he was reminded of the great expanse of Thomas’s mind and almost immediately started feeling sick without a wall to lean against.
The grey fog was...a compromise. Virgil didn’t know how to feel about it, but it had started coming the more that Thomas listened to Deceit and accepted Remus, and hung out with Virgil. It wasn’t bad.
It wasn’t good either.
Virgil didn’t like being out in it, so he tried to push it out of his mind.
“Yeah,” Virgil said again, “A cactus, because you’re a massive prick still, Dee.”
And because Virgil also didn’t know how to feel about Deceit, he fled the scene and pushed the interaction from his mind.
That was supposed to be the end of it. A single insult and nothing more.
But then Thomas...got himself into one of those situations.
A situation just like before when Thomas was a teenager and Virgil was juggling the fifty million things Thomas needed to focus on and he was failing and dropping things--
“Why don’t we ask Deceit?” Patton suggested. “He’ll probably have an answer!”
Roman blew out a breath with a hand on his chest, “Oh thank god, I didn’t want to be the one who said it.”
You...Patton,” Thomas said with all the disbelief Virgil felt, “Want to ask Deceit for help?”
“Well, yeah kiddo!” Patton smiled that dopey, sunshine smile of his. “He’s a part of you too, ya know!”
“Thomas if I may--” Logan interjected from the hall, folding his hands in an excited, yet focused manner. “Patton may be on to something here. In the past Deceit has worked closely with Virgil to get you out of tight binds like this one. Lying may not be the absolutely best solution for the overall conundrum, but it will provide a temporary expansion of time for us to fix the problem in another way. Much like boarding up a broken window until we can replace the window all together.”
“But what if it doesn’t?” Virgil growled. “What if Joan sees through the lie and hates us even more?”
“Mhm, doubtful,” Logan said. “Joan is a very understanding friend. Even if they aren’t misdirected by our misdirection, they will likely allow us time to explain why we felt the need to lie to them.”
“You just don’t want to work with Deceit!” Roman declared flourishing in Virgil’s direction. “Don’t worry, Channing Tantrum! You aren’t going to be replaced!”
“I wasn’t worried about being replaced,” Virgil grumbled. “But I am now! Thanks Roman!”
Patton cupped his own face, “Oh no! We would never do that to you! That’s not what I meant!”
“I agree,” Logan said, “Its more likely that I would scoot over to allow room to my left for Deceit to say his piece.”
Thomas absently looked around his living room with a critical eye, “I need a bigger living room, if I’m going to keep having theses existential crises.”
“Bigger living room means more room for puppies!” Patton said
“Bigger living room means more Me!” Roman added, excitedly.
“No Thomas!” Logan shouted, “Stay on track!”
Their host, Patton, and Roman, all shared a groan, which didn’t make the uneasiness in Virgil dim any. Of course Logan corralling the others to focus just made Virgil more aware of the time that was passing-- the time that they were losing to come up with a solution to the problem that Virgil created because he wasn’t doing his job effectively enough.
Joan was due over in half an hour, and they needed to figure out how to tell them that they promised to spend the day with Terrance-- without letting on the the fact that Terrance had asked for help getting Joan’s surprise birthday present together.
“Alright lets call Deceit,” Thomas said, spinning to face the left side of Logan and throwing his arms out, “DECEIT!”
And it was supposed to be Deceit showing up with his cunning and theatrical smirk, having obviously heard them all talking about him and preening under the knew attention. Virgil would have bet money on seeing that Snake’s overconfident smile; and he would have felt relieved that Deceit would have a pre-preapred lie in the making that would only take a second or two to clue Thomas in on and the he’d be gone again.
It was not supposed to be Deceit being flung up into the room holding that damn little cactus in his hands and it flying out of his hands to land on the floor.
“De--oh,” Thomas said eyeing the succulent as it tumbled over and spilled metaphorical dirt on the ground. “Sorry?”
“Thomas,” Deceit said with a resigned lit, “So wonderful for you to call. I was totally expecting it.” He bent down to pick up the little plant, careful of the needles and investigated the flower with an analyzing eye.
“Is that a cactus?” Roman asked.
“....No.”
“Is that the cactus I gave you?” Virgil asked, before he could stop himself.
Because well...it couldn’t be the cactus Virgil gave him. Virgil’s “gift” had been 9/10ths dead and suffering badly for it (not that Virgil had tried to kill it or anything. He had looked up how to take care of a cactus and it still hadn’t worked for him). The one in Deceit’s hand was blooming with bright yellow flowers that matched Deceit’s gloves and was a healthy green color.
Deceit gave him an offended look for his trouble. “Of course not! Can’t you see that I let yours die and then went to the trouble of getting the same exact one to keep and admire in my room?”
“You can quit with the attitude,” Virgil shot back.
“Me? An attitude?” Deceit scoffed, tossing his head as he rolled his eyes and banished his cactus back to his room. “Perish the thought! Now I assume that you called me up here for a reason, and not just to chat, Thomas. So come on, get out with the the day’s dilemma.”
That should have been the end of it. An eye roll and nothing more.
But Deceit spun that little lie that Thomas agreed to tell, Virgil and Deceit worked side by side just like they used to before Thomas grew up. Virgil juggled all the things that he needed to focus on and Deceit spun the lies to catch the things he dropped before they shattered.
And when Thomas was successfully on his way to Terrance’s with Joan none the wiser (and none the angrier at him), Virgil called it a day and sunk back down into the Mindscape.
It was strange, wasn’t it? That Deceit had kept his cactus- that Deceit had kept it at all.
And perhaps a little part of Virgil was happy about-- the same little part of him that woke him up at night because the other half of his bed was empty or because he wanted a hug but he wanted one of Deceit’s hugs. It was the same little part of him he had been trying to hush and squash and silence for years now.
The part of him that still wanted Deceit in his life, in Thomas’s life.
And wasn’t that annoying? Virgil was overthinking this.
It was a mostly dead cactus. Deceit had probably grown it back from the edge for spite against him and no reason more.
He picked up one of the other plants he had in his room: another cactus, because Patton knew they required little help from humans and though they could liven Virgil’s room a little. Virgil adored Patton, he did, but he didn’t have the heart to tell the Moral side that he just wasn’t good with plants.
But Deceit was. Probably was.
And Deceit really had saved Thomas from a really bad day today. A half dead plant probably wasn’t a very good “Thank you”.
But Virgil wasn’t exactly good at thank you’s either. So he left a second cactus outside Dee’s door with a note that read “You’re Still a Prick”.
And by the next time Virgil got the courage to roam to Deceit’s door, two to three days later it had vanished.
So it was an apology and nothing more.
Should have been an apology and nothing more.
But Patton had dropped off another little succulent for him-- this one still alive and had purple accents with it, and Virgil had once again chickened out of telling him that he routinely managed to kill all the plants he touched. Instead Virgil eyed the plant and pursed his lips.
Surely it wasn’t fair to the stupid little cactus that it got stuck being gifted to Virgil. (Where was Patton even getting these from?) It didn’t deserve to suffer in Virgil’s room for months on end while he tittered about it and begged it not to die on him like its predecessors.
Oh geez, was Virgil serious acting like the cactus had feelings? That’s a new low for him.
Besides he knew where this was going anyway. Straight down the misty emptiness that was The mindscape and to the right: Deceit’s room.
He left another note with it: “Aloe Loser, thought you might want another friend.”
So it was a joke and nothing more.
And if Virgil brainstormed a couple more bad cactus puns? Well.. that’s his business. He drew a few of the succulents too, but his window sill was clear and and he no longer felt awful for letting all of his gifted plants die.
That was something right?
It should have ended there.
But then Virgil had come upon one of those nights were he couldn’t-- fucking-- sleep. He tossed and turned and growled. Threw off his covers, pulled them back on, turned on the fan, drank warm milk, listened to the calming sounds of a thunderstorm--
It was hopeless.
He huffed and grabbed his sweatshirt before stalking out of his room, unsure of where he was even going. Thomas was resting peacefully, Roman was out making dreams and Remus was working with him for once to make some epic fantasy thing-- Virgil only knows this because Roman had actually been excited that his brother agreed to help him rather than hindered him.
Virgil was just glad Remus wasn’t antagonizing them again.
The grey fog swirled around him as he walked, feeling like a fine mist against his exposed skin. He triple checked Thomas’s schedule, the memories of Thomas’s plans with friends and family, he checked the viewers most recent comments-- but whatever was keeping him up wasn’t tied to Thomas.
(Which was ridiculous because it was tied to Virgil who was already tied to Thomas, which meant-- geez he was too tired to finish the thought.)
“Virgil?”
The voice shook him from his pondering, soft and gentle and coaxing. Virgil wasn’t surprised to find Dee standing in the grey mass looking every bit irritated at Virgil felt, only he was still dressed for the day. His purple and gold  tunic was covered in a foul smelling goop and there were smudges of green on his face and in his hair. His shoes made a horrid squelching noise with every step and his hat and caplet were missing.
“What are you doing out?” Virgil huffed, curling his shoulders.
Deceit exhaled sharply, “Well I was heading to find the memories of the day to file away, but Remus rearranged the floor again without telling me and I discovered a lovely Slip-N-Slide from my door straight to a pit of something green.” He grimaced, “I don’t want to know what it is.”
Virgil winced. “That’s...” he started, “rough.”
Deceit scoffed, “That is one way to put it.” He wiped his hands together as if he he could get rid of the goop, “And you? What are you doing haunting the halls of Thomas’s mind like a specter of the night, Anxiety?”
“Can’t sleep.” Virgil replied.
He shifted for a moment twisting his hands in his sweatshirt while Deceit pretended not to notice. The silence was a stifling sort, the type that echoed through all of Thomas and made Virgil violently aware that neither of them were actually real beings as much as just metaphysical figments from the imagination of a man with a incredible obsession for Disney.
“I should be going.” Deceit said finally. “Good Night--”
“Wait,” Virgil said, too loudly, too quickly, too suddenly.
Deceit raised an eyebrow at him and he worried his bottom lip between his teeth.
“I, uh,” Virgil sighed and then rolled his shoulders back, “My room’s closer. I think I still have some of your clothes in there. If you want to... like change.”
Deceit stared at him for far too long.
“I---” the side said tilting his head, “No that’s okay, Virgil. I don’t want to be a hassle.”
“You aren’t a hassle, Dee.” Virgil thought it should be a lie coming from him, because he’d spent so long being angry at Dee for so many reasons-- too many to count and keep straight. He had whined and complained and arguments and grumbled so many times because Deceit refused to leave Thomas, to leave Virgil himself alone.
But here they are now.
And Virgil was reminded that he didn’t know what his feelings about Deceit were. He just knew that they were there, and very present, and that they had been growing ever since he saw that Deceit kept his stupid little cactus.
“Okay,” Deceit said and it was barely more than a whisper in the night.
“Okay,” Virgil echoed.
The walk back to Virgil’s room was weird. There was a tension in the air that Virgil couldn't place, didn’t want to place, tried not to place. Deceit’s mouth opened once or twice but he aborted whatever thought it was at the last second. It was entirely unlike him. Virgil fidgeted with the loose string of his pocket.
The squelching of Deceit’s shoes make both of them wince, but once back in Virgil’s room Virgil summoned a container of Clorox wipes for him. It was silent while Deceit cleaned himself up and Virgil hunted down those old clothes he knew were still in his room. It was the third drawer by the time he found them: stuffed behind a bunch of other clothes that Virgil never wore anymore.
“Why did you keep my cactus?” Virgil asked, trying not to watch as Deceit stripped shamelessly in front of him (and god at least that about him was still the same).
“Why did you gift me a dead cactus?” Deceit asked right back.
“I think you know the answer to that,” Virgil said.
Deceit turned around to face him and Virgil realized that he gave him the wrong shirt because that one is definitely his own. Deceit was never a band fan: always preferring to listen to classical and read philosophy than bounce around with Virgil as the beat move through them. Still with his dark eye lashes and cocky grin he wore that shirt better than Virgil ever did.
“Do I?” He said startling Virgil out of his thoughts. Virgil tore his eyes off Deceit’s chest, away from the his piercing eyes and very kissable lips (not that Virgil was thinking of kissing him, okay. It was late and he was tired and there aren’t many other adjectives to describe what the hell type of lips Deceit has).
“You do,” Virgil confirmed, flopping onto his bed.
“Ah,” Deceit said and then so carefully slid onto the opposite corner of the bed, barely even on the bed at all. He looked a bit like he was waiting for Virgil to tell him to get off, to get out, to get on with his life. “Then I supposed you gave me the cactus because you hate me.”
“I don’t hate you,” Virgil said.
“Because you hated me?”
“I...” Virgil hesitated.
“Because you wanted to remind me that what we had between us was dead.”
Virgil didn’t say anything because it wasn't a question anymore. Deceit didn’t say anything either because-- because he was Deceit and there was too much history between them to fill the silence with memories. They simply stare at opposite sides of the room.
“So,” Virgil said after a moment. “If you knew that, why did you keep it?”
Deceit stood up suddenly, taking a deep breath and letting it out, “Perhaps because even I can be an optimistic fool sometimes.” He turned away, “Thank you Virgil. I’ll go now-”
“Wait--”
“Good night.”
“Deceit!” Virgil said and Deceit froze where he was, one hand on the door handle, one foot prepared to run off. With his back to Virgil, he couldn't make out the expression of Deceit’s face, but he was guessing it was a grimace.
Whatever Virgil was going to say is gone and to be honest Virgil wasn’t sure it was ever there. Some part of him had started screaming the moment that Deceit had gone to leave and Virgil had reacted without a thought.
“Do you--” Virgil cleared his throat, “Would you--” He stuttered off. Virgil squeezed his eyes closed, “Where do you keep it?”
Deceit stared at the door for a long moment. Virgil counted each and every breath until he spoke up again. “The desk in my room gets a lot of light. I’ve lined them all up.”
“All?”
“All,” Deceit echoed. “They look nice while I read.”
Virgil’s mouth felt dry and he wasn’t sure why.
“Good night, Virgil,” Deceit said again, softly and opened the door to step back out into the mindscape.
“Deceit!” Virgil called one more time, “Do you....If I...” He took another breath, “Would you like another one?”
“Another Cactus?” Deceit asked
And Virgil didn’t know how to say “Another Chance” or “Another hug” or “Another Kiss” so instead he just nodded.
Deceit looked at him again, his scales glimmering in the dull light. He smiled sorta--kinda--probably. “Yes, Virgil,” He said, “If you have another to offer.”
Virgil told himself not to get excited, not to get anxious, not to get overwhelmed.
After all, it was just a cactus and nothing more.

-Chapter 2-
Saturday came quickly. Steve and Bucky wore their nicest shirts and slacks. Aunt Rachel would actually be proud of how nice they look. Bucky wore dark grey and white, the dark grey bringing the blue of his eyes out more clearly. Steve wore black and white.
“Stevie, let’s go! The girls are going to think we stood them”.
Steve was finishing a sketch of the alley cat that sat on our fire escape. “Just a sec Buck. I just want to… yes that looks about right.” Steve put his pencils back in the cigar box he stored them in. It was his father’s. Very few items he still had from his mother and father. Bucky’s mom had made sure he kept a few things when he moved in with Barnes' family. Steve had just started to draw when his father passed so he kept the box with the most valuable thing he had.
“Come on man, maybe you can sketch Eloise. I’m sure she’d love that.”
“Yeah, if I can get the words out the ask…”
The cold night didn’t keep the Bellflower Room quiet. A live band playing a slow tune as the men met up with the ladies. The Murphy sisters were a pair to see. Both ladies had the most gorgeous red hair and green eyes. Not twins but close in age. Janet was a little taller and leaner, but the younger of the two. Eloise, the same age as Bucky, was a little shorter but good built. Bucky was a good friend and let Eloise spend the evening with Steve. Bucky was definitely taller than the average man. He had grown to 5’11”. His tags had to be updated when the Corporal officer noticed Bucky’s pants were above his ankle again. If Bucky was honest, Eloise was more his type. Someone who could rest their head on his chest as they slowed danced to the record after the kids had gone to bed. A girl who would make grilled cheese sandwiches because they couldn’t sleep well. Eloise was that kind of girl.
Bucky and Steve had known the Murphy girls since primary school. While Bucky was intimidating in size, he wasn’t aggressive most days, you could find Eloise and Buck sitting under a tree on the play yard with well worn out books. The girls’ family owned the book store down the corner. The two of them would devour books like their life depended on it. She had brought Bucky ‘The Hobbit’ after she had read it. The pair were intellectually matched.
Janet and Bucky got along but as she was a grade younger just like Steve, their interaction at school was limited. Their relationship was more teasing. She was the kid sister. But, boy had she grown up. Tall and slender like their father. Her hair was curly and reminded him of a lion's mane. Now that she was older and more put together, she pinned it with a beautiful pin. The jem in her pin matched the color of her bright green eyes. She was gorgeous, Bucky couldn’t deny that fact.
“James, are we going to dance or are we going sit here all night?”
Steve and Eloise had started debating about something and Bucky was sucked in. The two people that made his heart jump a beat. The butterflies in his stomach started when those two got heated about something they loved.
“Sorry Janey,” as he pulled the slender sister to her feet, “ you know how these two get. Have fun punk.” As he pulled her close hand in hand and wrapped her close with a small sway. The pair made it to the crowded dance floor. Bodies were close and the smell of bourbon and smoke and a hint of something floral hit Bucky’s senses. As much as Janet was not on the top of Bucky’s mind, he was a man. The heat of Jane’s body close to his, the smell of lavender in her hair and the warm breath on his neck as they swayed to the calm song the band played, made Bucky think more feral thoughts about the kid sister he always saw Janet as.
“James… Bucky…,” Janet whispered in his ear lips close to his earlobe.
“Huh,” Bucky’s mind was a million miles away. This happened far more times than Bucky wanted.
“What’s that mind of yours thinking now. I can see the wheels turning.,” she sniffed near his neck, “ hmm I might even smell smoke.”
“Ha, sorry. Just enjoying the night. Why haven’t we done this more often? This feels good,” as he dipped her, pulling her close check to check.
“Not sure, but the feeling is mutual,” she cooed as she snuggled into his neck.
They danced a few more songs until the band livened up a bit. The pair had checked on Steve and Eloise from the dance floor. The two were still wildly in conversation. Janet smiled at Bucky. “ I could go for some air,” while tugging on his suit jacket.
Bucky could really go for a cigarette at this point and a beer. Knowing that Steve and Eloise were still content, he knew they wouldn’t notice or mind their disappearance. Janet grabbed Bucky’s hand and led them to the side door where people left for a few minutes of Brooklyn air. It was late November and the air was crisp. The snow that had fallen the other day was already gone. Janet kept Bucky close as she moved through the throng of people thinking the same thing. Both saying “hi” to acquaintances as they walked on. Bucky was under this fiery vixen’s spell. Never before did he think of her like this but the tension they made started to drive him wild. Finally Janet stopped around the corner, stragglers only passing by. She leaned against the cool brick building and sighed.Bucky pulled out a cigarette and lit it. Pulling the first taste and taking in the scene, letting the cig dangle on his lips. Janet took it from his lips and took a drag, exhaling a little smoke ring. She giggled as she gave the cigarette back.
“ Oh so little Janet Murphy has tricks up her sleeves,” Bucky chuckled.
“Oh the tricks and treats Private Barnes,” her voice lowered as she cooed into his chest.
Bucky couldn’t take the teasing anymore. He snuffed out his cigarette and hid it on the brick wall. Carefully but with some roughness, Bucky grabbed her face and planted a rough kiss. She fell under the spell. Janet returned the kiss with the same energy. A small moan squeaked out of her as she ran her fingers through his nicely coiffed hair.

Breathe (If You Still Can Hope To)
ao3 link
Their vision was wavering, darkness creeping in around the edges. What little they could see was blurred, everything gleaming red as - they could've sworn those were closer - distant alarms blared. Faintly, they could hear something struggling for air. Someone walked towards them. Red? Orange? Maybe Yellow? It was hard to tell exactly, but it certainly was a warmly colored suit, considering how it blended in with the lights. They tried to get up, only their fingers twitching for their effort, but still they tried.
The person came closer, closer, and closer 'till all they could make out were the boots in front of their face. They still couldn't make out a color. The person apparently decided to roll them over, because now they could see the ceiling - blurry, of course - and the little plant sticking out the other's helmet.
Orange, then. Red would never take off her beloved tophat, and Yellow wasn’t ever fun enough to put on a hat, no matter how hard the crew all tried to convince him. Something wheezed quietly. Their fingers once again twitched feebly as they tried to move, to get up, to do anything except lay on the floor. No dice.
"-alive?"
It seemed Orange was saying something. But it was hard to listen when they were so tired.
"-didn't know it'd be like this---lert on my tablet”
Orange was rambling about something, like vey always did when vey were excited. Or nervous. They had no idea what vey could be excited about, and it was hard to wonder why when the darkness in their vision started creeping in again.
"-to decide how to do it! I've never done th-"
Orange started picking them up, slinging their limp arm over veir shoulders. Their stomach churned ominously as vey stood, the sudden change in perspective nauseating. The quiet little gasps of something fighting to breathe continued, making them wonder if there was anything they could do to help. Or at least to make it stop.
"-anyone, I really, really couldn't. So Oxygen seemed-"
Their head lolled off of Orange's shoulders as the two of them - well, just Orange, really. They couldn't manage more than the twitch of their fingers - moved. Where? They had no clue. They could barely see anything anymore, Orange's voice the only thing keeping them awake. Even then, it was a close battle they were starting to lose. Even the desperate breathing noises started to quiet down.
It was getting harder to think. They blinked slowly and-
"-an ok level by myself. I don't think---hoping you'll be ok."
Gentle hands tugged off their helmet and pulled a mask over their face. The darkness receded, if only by a little bit, but enough to give them back some semblance of awareness. They felt themself being buckled into a seat.
" 'nge-?" They slurred, looking their crewmate in the face. Visor. Orange still had veir helmet on.
Vey looked startled to hear them, pausing veir careful patdown to look at them.
"-ake? I'm glad. Thank goodness the dropship---gen supply."
Thoughts growing clearer with each passing breath, they jolt, remembering what happened. The trip had been going fine despite the announcement of an imposter on board, had seemed to be going fine. Then, things had started going strangely, doors slamming shut and lights going off, but no one died so they didn't worry too much about it. They had thought at was just someone playing a prank, - Blue, probably. He was a hell of a prankster when he got up to it, - a little something to liven up the monotony of space travel. Honestly, they had welcomed it! Even a game of cards had gotten boring after awhile.
Then, systems started failing.
Oxygen was first. They remembered rushing to admin, inputting in the code to fix it. They had made it in time. They remember voting off Green for standing idly in navigation, or so Purple had yelled, slamming her hand on the table. He wasn't the Imposter. They remember voting out Purple, afterwards. She wasn't, either.
They remember Orange skipping both votes.
They didn't think much of it. Orange was always friendly, always kind to everyone in the crew. They knew it must've hurt vem to see friends thrown out into the merciless grasp of space.
Next was the Reactor, and they remembered the pulsing thing that powered the ship glow threateningly as they stood in the room, a hand pressed on the scanner as they prayed for someone to reach the other one in time. They remember seeing crewmates scramble into the room, they even remember Orange tripping over one of the lights in veir hurry. It wasn’t funny at the time, but they laughed about it later. They remember screaming at Yellow during that meeting for… something. They don't remember for what, but no one got shoved out the airlock.
After that it became a pattern. Oxygen went off, then Reactor, then Oxygen again. It became normal, a routine event, even. The crew relaxed. They became complacent. There was always someone to fix it, afterall.
One day, they heard the alarms for Oxygen sound out. It should've been Reactor, they remember idly thinking. They remember ignoring the alarms; they knew someone else would get it, and security's wires were so, annoyingly tangled.
They remember wondering why the alarms hadn't quieted yet, as they worked on unknotting a particularly stubborn ball of wires. They remember wondering why the world had started to sway, why their fingers started fumbling over a task they've done a thousand times before.
They remember wondering… why couldn’t they breathe.
"There."
All this time, as they remembered, Orange had been moving, pressing buttons and entering something into the dropship's software. Now vey stood, brushing nonexistent dust off their pants, and stepping back out into the Wester. They still couldn't move much, but they manged to follow veir movements. Orange caught their eye, and gave them a half hearted shrug, fidgeting with veir gloves.
"I…" Vey laughed, with a voice full of tears, "I'll be fine. I don't really need oxygen like you all do."
With that, the liar shut the door and walked away. Minutes later, they felt the dropship rumble as it detached from the Wester, and sped away. Though the darkness mostly receded from their vision, they were exhausted, and the quiet dark between the stars soon lulled them to sleep.
---
Orange watched the dropship disappear into deep space, and sighed as vey turned back to the ship. [OXYGEN levels: 1%] blared in the corner of veir visor, an alert long since turned beyond useless. Vey wandered the halls a ghost, the bright red of the alarm lights washing away veir suit's color. Orange became nothing more than blank canvas that the bodies vey found, and collected, popped out against. It took several trips before vey found them all.
Orange named, and counted: Black and Brown, Yellow and Red, White and Blue. Six different people out of ten the crew. Six different people of the nine vey once knew.
Six similar corpses, bodies starved by the very air they needed to live.
Even if Orange hadn't strangled each one vemself, it had certainly felt like it when vey had watched White and Red drop dead on the cameras. Had heard Black wheezing for air when vey passed by Electric. Had seen Yellow frantically attempt to punch in numbers until he too, collapsed, while vey watched from the entrance to Admin. It certainly felt like it.
Now the crew all sat, propped against the table, as Orange stared at their bodies. A 'ping' from veir tablet, discarded on the floor, startled vem.
'VICTORY'
laid in bright blue, cheerful letters across the screen.
Orange couldn't help but remember the look that Lime had given vem as vey shattered veir tablet across the floor. Vey couldn’t help but remember the question in their eyes Vey hadn't quite lied. The fact that vey could still stand despite the [OXYGEN levels: .01%] stamped across their visor was quite proof enough of that.
But Orange shuddered, voice thick with grief as vey quietly told the truth that no one was left to hear: "No… You wouldn't want to ride with a murderer."

Part 9:
It was about 10 am on a Saturday. It had been 1 week and 6 days since Jensen had left. Which meant he was coming home tomorrow.
You had spent that time alone getting familiar with the house, but steering clear of his room. Privacy and all.
You had added a few hints of your own decoration around the house. Mainly just plants here and there to make it homey, and a dash of color every other spot to liven up the grey and white decorations. Other than that the only thing that you changed drastically was your own room.
You added a red oriental rug to your room with a white outline. Your bed had a huge fluffy white comforter on it with a nice light pink shaded quilt that your grandma had actually made you when you were born. Then added some throw pillows of multiple colors to bring even more colors into your white room. You also added some colorful lamps and bought a few sitting chair you found at the local thrift store that you refurbished and reupholstered. Lastly, you did something that may have pushed the limit, but honestly you were proud of it. After much convincing from Gen you decided to build your own vanity/desk in to the wall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may have been on Pinterest a few hours too long, and had one too many glasses of wine with your bestie when you found the idea. You decided if he didn’t like it you could fix it after, but it really wasn’t a bad add-on to the room. He wasn’t using the room before hand, and if you did move out at some point, it could be used as a guest room, and it would be convenient to the guest. Also, your room didn’t have a bathroom. It was across the hall. This way you didn’t have to leave your room to do your makeup or beauty routine.
Jensen was coming home tomorrow, so after waking up and making a nice breakfast you debated on working out or cleaning the house. It wasn’t really messy, but you weren’t sure how he would react to the small changes. You had texted him every once in a while to check with things here and there, but some changes you didn’t tell him about. Hence the vanity.
You decided no work out for now, and you also needed a shower. Hopping in the shower you took your time to relax. You had a long week at work, and also were trying to settle things with your old apartment about refunds and other aggravating things. Let’s not even mention your ex calling you multiple times a day saying he wanted to ‘talk.’
Talk my ass.
You got out of the shower, and wrapped your hair in a towel after wrapping one around yourself. You stepped out of the humid and fog filled room, and marched over to your room. You shut the door for privacy, even though you were home alone. It was a reflex after living with a roommate for so long.
Quickly, after arriving in your room you saw your phone lighting up. Seeing who was calling you cussed under your breath.
“This dick again? For fucks sake take a hint dude!” you said throwing the phone on the bed, and walking to your dresser for clothes.
It started ringing again.
“What now?” you said walking over to your bed towel clutched to your chest.
Dipshit. (what you had his name under in your phone now).
“Are you fucking kidding me?!” you were tired of it and knew it wouldn’t stop so you answered. “What the hell do you want?!”
“Y/N! Oh, thank God you answered. Listen I need-“
“I don’t give a shit what you NEED! Stop CALLING!” you shouted before ending the call and throwing it to your bed again. “Asshole.”
That was the last string. You wanted a Saturday to yourself, but now you needed to punch something. Boxing it was. You walked to your dresser, and put on a pair of leggings, and one of your favorite sports bras.
You still had your hair up in a towel to dry some more, even though you know you were probably going to have to take another shower after your punching sesh.
The phone started buzzing and ringing once again.
“OH COME ON! That’s it Dipshit!” you answered the phone angrily. “WHAT THE HELL?!”
“Listen Y/N, I know you hate my guts, but please can you give me a chance to talk?”
“NO! There isn’t another chance! I know my worth, and you aren’t part of that equation, OK?!”
“Y/N/N-“
You walked over to your door needing to get your anger out sooner rather than later. Ready to head to the in-home gym.
“Go to Hell!” you shouted as you ended the call, and clenched onto it at your side. You let out a heavy breath before opening the door.
You saw a man standing there with his hand raised in a fist. Out of instinct you threw your right fist straight into the stranger’s face hearing a slight pop, but not knowing who it came from. You’re hand or the stranger’s face? The man grabbed his face with both hands in pain, and dropped the duffel bag in hand to the ground as he stumbled back.
Actually taking a second to recognize what was happening, you saw that it was Jensen, and he had been raising his hand to knock on the door.
“HOLY SHIT!” he yelled as he crumpled over and grabbed his nose.
“HOLY SHIT!” you yelled right after going to comfort him but stopping yourself with your hands out not wanting to scare him anymore. “OH MY GOD JENSEN! I am soooo sorry! Shit, I didn’t know you were home.”
“I was going to surprise you.” He mumbled out as he tried blinking away the pain and lifted his head, but kept a hand on his knee for support since he was still crouched over while the other grasp the pain.
“Shit, I just broke a guys face who gets paid to be pretty. Oh my God, really I am so sorry.” You said bending to his level to get a better look at the injury.
“It’s all good. I would say I’ve had worse, but damn… You have a nice hook sweetheart- Wait, did you say I was pretty?”
That brought a slight smile to your face, but you quickly brushed it off when you noticed the blood making its way down to his mouth.
“Forget that for right now, your bleeding. Here take this towel, and come sit on my bed.”
You took the black damp towel off your head, and handed it too him which he accepted quickly. You grabbed his elbow and ushered him into your room and sat him on your bed.
“Ok, tilt your head back slightly, and pinch your nose, and add as much pressure as you can without hurting it. I’m going to grab an ice pack.” You said running out.
Once you were out of the room, Jensen noticed the smell of the towel. It smelled like green apples. Your shampoo maybe? Whatever it was he liked it. It was nostalgic and sweet.
He took the moment alone to take in your newly decorated room as well. You had your turntable on the wall close to the door, and it looks like you were playing Eagles at some point because the record was still on it. That got a chuckle out of him, but then he cringed in pain at the movement in his face.
Next he noticed the décor. You had a plant here and there just like his living room and kitchen had now. He noticed that when he came into the house almost instantly. He also noticed the burst of colors in the room. It gave it character.
He walked over to the wall opposite of your bed that had pictures on pictures scattered of you with friends, and possible family members from the looks of it. There were pictures of landscapes and adventures that you had gone on at some point in your life. There was also abstract painting scattered every other spot. It was just a montage of what made you, you. Your smile was so bright in every picture, and you looked so content with life.
There was one picture in particular that caught his attention though. You were standing by what looked like a pier. The sun was setting behind you, and you had a head scarf on that looked like a headband wrapped through your hair and it was flowing in the wind. You were wearing a white sundress that hugged your body perfectly, but also flowed out in the wind. You were laughing at something, and looking right passed the camera. Probably someone behind them making you laugh. Your hands were on the rail behind you holding on, but you were leaning forward as if you were falling forward. Your smile was so bright, and your hair was slightly blowing in the wind with the scarf. You were glowing. That brought a smile to his own face, and he bared that pain it caused him in the nose because it made him happy to see you happy.
But happiness wasn’t what he heard when he came to your door. You were screaming to someone, and you sounded furious. His plan was to go to his room drop off his things then come knock on the door, but the yells persuaded him to stop then, and check if you were ok. Bringing us to this moment.
As he was looking at the picture intently, he heard you say something behind him.
“What was that?” he asked spinning around.
“I said, does it hurt?” you said bringing him the ice pack. “I heard something crack, and I wasn’t sure if it was my knuckle or your nose. Hopefully my knuckles…” you mumble the last part.
“I mean yes, it hurts, but I can bare it.” He grabbed the pack and placed it by the towel not sure if he wanted to remove it yet. Either for the smell, or that his nose could still be gushing.
“Here, let me see.” You said moving on your tip toes to get to his level, and move the towel slightly to look at the damage.
While you moved it you were so focused on the injury, you didn’t notice Jensen studying your face as you softly bit your lip to concentrate, not knowing you were doing so.
“Wow, she’s even more gorgeous up close…” he thought. “How is that possible? Jensen, get a hold of yourself.”
Before he could pull his thoughts from you, you had settled back to your height.
“I think it stopped bleeding. Here I’ll take the towel, and you put the ice pack on.”
“You sure know a lot about nosebleeds, and possible broken noses.”
“Well, when you grow up with a big brother, you most likely will get a bloody nose and a broken bone here or there.” You said taking the towel, and throwing it into the dirty laundry careful not to get blood on the other clothes.
“Were you the one doing the damage or was it the other way around.” He said laughing and then wincing at the coldness.
“Here let me get a washcloth.” You ran back to the bathroom, and wrapped the ice pack in a cloth. “There.”
“By the way I see it, you could do just as much trouble as any brother could.” He said motioning to his nose.
“Ha, yeah well I wasn’t one to get pushed around, and not turn around and return the pain.” You said crossing your arms across your chest. “I may have given my brother a black eye or two.”
“Well, maybe I should be hiring you for my bodyguard needs.” He said with a wink walking to your bed to sit on the edge.
You followed his lead, and sat close to him, really just to get a better look at him.
“Ha ha, well… If the pay is good.” You said shrugging and pulling a leg up on the bed. “Also, want to explain to me why you are back home so early?” you said slightly pushing his shoulder. “You weren’t supposed to be home for another 24 hours.”
“Yeah, well I could just sit at my apartment in Vancouver for another day by myself, or I could get an early flight here to surprise my new roomie.” He said chuckling. “Which now, I’m starting to think I shouldn’t surprise you anymore,” He said with raised eyebrow.
“You’re going to hold this over my head forever aren’t you. You realize, I’m going to be apologizing for this until the end of days, right?” you said with the raised eyebrow back.
“It’s fine really. You have good reflexes. No need to apologize for it.” He said looking back around the room. “I will also be holding over your head the fact you called me pretty too.” He said getting up and walking over curiously to the desk you built-in.
“I have no idea what you are talking about.” You said playing dumb.
“What’s this?” he said getting distracted by the vanity.
“Oh, I meant to tell you about that…” You said getting up and walking over hesitantly.
“This is so cool.” He said before you could try to defend your actions.
“Wait, really?”
“Yeah! It’s like in the wall. Is this from ikea? Did you have someone come install it or something?” he said examining it.
“Um, no actually. I built, and installed it myself.” You said folding your arms behind your back.
“What?!” he said turning around extremely quick with shock on his face. “You did this? Did you buy the table and then just hang it up, or what?”
“No, actually I got the wood from this guy I know, measured it and sawed it accordingly. Then sanded it down, and stained it with a nice natural stain to bring out the grains in it. Then put a light clear coat on it for water resistance, and what not.” You walked over and smoothed a hand over your work, as you talked. “Then I bought the brackets, that are holding it up, on amazon, checked for the studs’ distance in the wall, drilled the holes, installed the brackets, then put the table on top. Now the mirror I got at TJ-max and just nailed it as centered as possible, and voila.” You said looking up to find an astonished look on Jensen’s face, and also how the ice pack had moved from his face and had fell at his side in his hand from the shock.
“What?” you said with a giggle.
“Ok, who are you? I feel like I don’t even know you.” He said motioning toward you.
You laughed again sitting at the table now.
“Well, not to brag or anything, but I may know a thing or two about carpentry.” You said winking and bringing a knee up to your chest in the chair.
“Why didn’t you tell me? Jared and I could have been using you this whole time for our table making contest.” He said throwing his hands around. “Oh my gosh! You could be our secret weapon!” he said pointing a finger at you.
“That’s exactly why I didn’t tell you.” You said getting a confused look from him. “I’m not doing your contest for you!” you laughed getting up and going to grab the ice pack from his hand. “That’s your own problem.” You said taking the ice pack, and putting it back on his nose.
Once, again he was stuck staring into those beautiful Y/E/C eyes, and you were returning the look. Now he had to ask the question that he was scared to, but he needed to know who could bring such anger to those eyes.
“Who were you yelling at earlier?”
That broke the gaze of each other, and made you look down and move back to your bed.
“Uh, no one important.” You said avoiding eye contact.
“That didn’t sound like no one.”
“Like I said no one important.” You said shrugging.
“If you don’t want to talk about it you don’t have to.” He said after a pause. He forgot about the ice pack, and walked over to your bed putting a hand on your shoulder. “Just know, if you need to talk to someone, I’m willing to listen.” He said bringing your eyes to meet him with the sincerity in his voice.
“Thanks Jensen.” You said with a smile. “Actually, this whole punching you in the face thing got my mind off of it.”
“Glad I could help then.” He said with a goofy smile getting a laugh out of you. He loved being the reason for that laugh.
“Honestly, I was going to go beat up the punching bag in the gym you have here. Hence the fact I just realized I am literally in a sports bra and leggings in front of you right now.” You said noticing your exposed self, and moving to try to cover a little.
“Hey, I’m not complaining.” He said with a smirk looking you up and down.
“JENSEN!” you said playfully shoving him.
“I’m kidding! I’m kidding!” he said throwing his hand in the air in surrender. He really didn’t mind the way you looked right now though. Damp messy hair, but smells amazing, and the hot workout clothes. He could get use to this. “Please don’t punch me again!” he said standing up moving to the door slowly, hands still raised.
“I can’t promise that.” You said with a grin.
“Well, in that case I am going to go unpack, and then you can let me know about all the other changes you made to the place.”
“Sounds good.” You giggled. “Are you sure you are ok Jens?”
“I’ll be fine…” he said grabbing his bag. “But I think you owe me some of your famous biscuits and gravy as an apology.” He said pointing a finger gun at you.
“It’s the least I could do.” You said shooting it back and laughing.
“Ok, I’ll meet you downstairs in 20 minutes.”
“See you there!” you shouted before he left.
You looked around your room, and let out a big sigh. “What am I going to do about this man?”
Just like you were getting to him, he was getting to you.
You decided to throw on a sweatshirt before heading downstairs. It was actually the one you wore the day you and Jensen met. The big grey sweatshirt with the embroidered Oklahoma in red on the front.
You made your way to the kitchen, and decided to start making the biscuits and gravy for lunch while Jensen unpacked. You had gotten as far as browning the meat, and starting on the biscuits batter as you saw him make his way down the stairs.
“Took you long enough.” You chuckled adding the last ingredient before putting your hands in the batter to knead it all together.
“Sorry, I had more dirty clothes then I thought I did.”
“Fair enough.”
By now he was waltzing into the kitchen and taking in a deep breath of the smells, as he made his way to you, and stood directly across from you on the other side of the island you were working at.
“Oh, that smells heavenly.”
“What can I say? It’s a specialty of mine.” You said shrugging and putting your attention back to your task at hand.
Jensen watched as you worked your magic, and a grin started to creep on his face because of how content and graceful you looked.
You looked up suddenly remembering the damage of his nose.
“How’s it looking?”
“What looking?” he said caught off guard from his staring trance thinking you had caught him in the act.
“Your nose dork. What else?” you giggled moving your hair out of your face with your forearm trying to avoid getting flour in it.
“Oh that? Uh, the swelling went down, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it started changing colors tomorrow honestly.” He said wiggling his nose a little. “You got me pretty good.”
“Again, I am so sorry.”
“Stop apologizing Y/N/N. Really, I’m fine.” He said putting a hand on your arm then quickly moving it away as if something shocked him. “What about you? How’s your hand?”
“Oh, it’s nothing I can’t handle.” You shrugged off.
“So it is something?”
“I mean a good bruise yeah, but broken or anything? Not even close.” You said trying to hide your hand further in the batter.
“Y/N…”
“What?”
“Let me see.”
“It’s nothing really.”
“Y/N.”
“Jensen.”
“Y/N.”
“Fine, fine.” You pulled your hand out and waved it in front of him before quickly putting it back in the bowl. “See just fine.”
“Let me see that.” He said grabbing your hand out of the bowl by your wrist. “Go wash this off so I can get a better look at ‘em.”
You were about to argue being the stubborn person you were, but Jensen shot you a look before you could get any words out. You let out a huff of air before walking over, and washing them quickly.
You hesitantly placed your hand out for him to see.
“Y/N, what are all these scraps and bruises? That couldn’t have been from one punch to my face.” He said holding your hand and turning to see all the bumps and scrapes. “What have you been doing? Fighting gangs in alleys or something?”
“It’s been a really stressful week, and a couple years back I realized the best way for me to get my anger and frustration out is boxing.”
“Are you wrapping your hands up?”
“Yeah, sometimes it only helps so much.”
“Then you aren’t wrapping them right.”
“Jensen, I’ve done it for a couple of years now. I think I can wrap my hands the right way by now.” You said taking your hand back and examining it yourself.
“Ok, next time you go show me how you do it. Maybe I can show you my way, and it will work better.”
“You box?”
“Why else do you think there is a bag in the home gym?” You raised and eyebrow at him. “I have frustrations too that I need to let out sometimes. That’s beside the point though.” You went back to needing the dough. It was almost done. “What has you so worked up, huh? Maybe you just need to vent about it. You know, talk?” He said.
“I’ve tried venting, and that only goes so far. Gen and I have talked about the…” you paused figuring out how you wanted to word it. “issue, that’s been getting on my nerves recently, but that only works me up more.” You chuckled and started balling up the biscuits and putting them on to sheet to bake. “You would think a woman with a counseling degree would know how to work with her emotions, but guess not.”
“Hey, we all need a good punch every once in a while to unwind.” He said breaking the tension in the room.
“Yeah, I guess.”
There was silence as you finished the batter and put it in the oven. As you walked over to the island separating you two, you saw Jensen watching you. You put both elbows on the counter and propped your head up with your hands.
“Next step, Gravy.” You said with a small smile, and he returned it. “Wanna see how I make the magic?” he nodded his head excitedly, and you stepped him through the process.
By the time you had added the flour, and milk to the grease from the sausage you had to keep a constant stir with it or it would burn. You kept up small talk about his trip, and also about the small changes you made around the house, when your phone started ringing.
“Can you check who that is for me? Gen said she would call around this time to tell me her plans for tonight.” You said nodding your head to your phone.
Jensen walked over to the other side of the island and picked up the phone.
“Who is it?” you said turning your attention back to the food.
“Someone named Dipshit. How rude of their parents to give them a name like that...” He said chuckling.
You whipped your head around, but Jensen didn’t see. Without thinking he answered it.
“Y/N’s phone.” He said with a goofy smile until he saw your face of pure shock. He immediately was curious now as too who he was talking to.
“Who is this? Y/N? Where the hell is Y/N?” your ex screamed over the phone.
You were trying to get away from the stove, but you also didn’t want to burn the house down.
“Y/N is a little busy right now, can I take a message?” Jensen said noticing your frenzy and wanting to know why this guy was making you act this way. Could he be the reason for all your stress lately?
“Um, no you can’t ‘take a message.’ Listen dick, this is Y/N’s boyfriend! Give her the phone right now!” he yelled through the phone loud enough you heard it.
“Jensen give me the phone, and take over the gravy.” You said through gritted teeth.
“Listen here ‘dick’, I’m not so sure you’re who you say you are. By the name Y/N has you in her phone, it doesn’t look too good for you.” Jensen said getting further from you, wanting to stand up for you.
“JENSEN.” You whispered yelled.
“Who is this?!” your ex screamed again. “If you don’t put me on the phone with Y/N right now, I’m gonna-“
“You’re gonna what? You gonna come hunt me down and fight me?” Jensen mocked. “I sure would love that. Please do yourself the favor of coming over and embarrassing yourself.”
You decided you had enough. You dropped everything and ran over to Jensen grabbing the phone out of his hand, and pushing him to the stove. You pointed harshly at the gravy, and gave him the death glare to go keep the job up. He put his hands in surrender, and did as instructed, but he kept his eyes on you the whole time. He had noticed how your shoulders tensed at the name once he said it, and he saw them tense even more as you answered the phone.
“What do you want?” you said bluntly.
Jensen couldn’t hear the other man on the phone, but heard your responses.
“I already told you, I want nothing to do with you. As far as I’m concerned, you never existed.”
Pause.
“Too bad isn’t it. You should have thought about that when-“ you paused and looked at Jensen before turning your back to him and whispering into the phone. “you screwed another woman.”
Pause.
“Why does it matter if I’m with another guy?”
Pause.
“OH, so you if you aren’t with someone than that automatically means I can’t be happy? You know what, it’s not even fucking like that! I don’t have to explain myself to you! Stop FUCKING calling! I’m blocking your number. I’m over this. I’m putting myself first!” you angrily hung up the phone with force, and turned back toward Jensen. You let out a huff that blew the piece of hair that had fallen in your face during the screaming fight.
After a pause, and allowing yourself to take a breather, you looked up to see those emerald green eyes sketched with worry and concern.
“You good?”
“Why did you answer it?”
“Your hands were full, and I honestly thought it was a friend you had a weird name in your phone for.”
“Well, as you could tell, it wasn’t.” you sassed.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know.” He said like a kicked puppy going back to the gravy. “If I’m honest though he did sound like a dipshit.” He mumbled to himself, but you heard it.
A slight grin made its way to your face even through all the anger. You walked closer to him and stood by the stove with him, but still stayed a good 3-4 feet apart.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be getting mad at you.” You sighed looking at the mixture he was stirring still, but he was looking at you. “I should be getting mad at myself for not blocking that assholes number earlier.”
“Yeah, but I shouldn’t have invaded your privacy. I also shouldn’t have put myself in it too.” He shrugged.
“Actually, if you didn’t I probably would have let him call me more times than I needed before I ever truly ended it.”
He just looked up at you, and slowly after you made the eye contact as well.
Your face was flushed with red from the embarrassment, and anger. Your hair was falling in your face in a messy way after you had put it in a low messy bun to keep it from getting in the food. You were leaning on the counter with your hip, and had your arms crossed. You were stunning, and were really not trying at all. He knew because he just saw you blow up and walk away from it moments ago.
“Sorry-“ he started.
You put a hand on his forearm causing him to look at the contact before looking back at you.
“Don’t. Really. I’m good. It actually lifted a weight off my shoulder.” You looked down at the gravy getting side tracked and noticing it was seconds from being done. “Here, I’ll do this. You go get the biscuits out of the oven. Let’s get our mind off this for a few seconds, and I’ll explain what that whole…mess was about.” You gave him a soft smile, and he returned it following what he was told to do.
Great. Now you were going to have to have the “Ex talk” with him. Just what every girl wants to have with a guy she likes. Let alone lives with.

The woman standing in Tony’s office only had one request when she agreed to move in to the Avengers compound.
Steve had been trying to convince her to move in for a while but she was hesitant to give up her personal space and if she was going to do it she needed something in return. “I need to be able to have a garden, and I’d really love to bring some plants inside too. Liven up the place a little bit.”
“This place is fine just the way it is,” Tony replied, waving his hand around the mostly white, minimalist room.
“Actually…” Pepper looked pointedly at Tony, “A little green around here wouldn’t hurt.”
“And think about all the fresh veggies!” (Y/N) exclaimed, wiggling her eyebrows at Tony. And so it was decided.
The first step was a garden plot behind the compound where she carefully planned out neat little rows of seeds. With some TLC and a little time, small green sprouts were soon poking up through the earth.
Bucky found himself spending more and more time in the living room which just conveniently happened to have a perfect view of the modest little garden. He'd never tell a soul but he loved to watch her working out there. There was just something about the gleam in her eyes as she so delicately tended to the little sprouts. Her sun kissed skin, dirt clinging to her knees and her fingertips, it made his stomach do flips in a way that it hadn’t in decades.
He had known (Y/N) for a few weeks now but their conversations had never made it past the simple pleasantries and if he was being honest, he had been trying to keep it that way. He had too much baggage and he didn't want to weigh her down with it. He kept most people at a distance for that reason.
On the other hand (Y/N) had tried more than once to work past the small talk but they never really got far. She could tell that Bucky didn’t want to open up and she wasn’t going to push him, she figured he just didn’t care to get to know her and she didn’t take it personally. She had heard of the things he had been through and she really didn’t blame him for wanting to keep to himself most of the time. The few times she had seen him smiling with Steve she had to push away the warm feeling that bubbled up in her chest. She was happy to distract herself with the plants.
Soon enough plants were appearing inside too. A few succulents on the windowsill, a spider plant in the common area bathroom, a nice orchid for the kitchen. Before the Avengers knew it they were surrounded by greenery and as much as Tony hated to admit it, it did make the compound feel much homier.
One day when she was outside weeding the garden she started to feel a slight drizzle. Turning her face towards the sky she welcomed the feeling of the cool mist on her skin. Before she could even consider wrapping things up and heading inside the skies opened up and she was almost instantly soaked. She took a look at the work that she still had to do, and considering that she really wanted to get the garden cleaned up before she left for a mission in a few days, she decided to just tough it out and finish weeding.
Bucky had been out on a run when the rain hit and on his shortcut back to the compound he happened by the garden. He had come up from behind her and she hadn’t noticed so it afforded him a minute to just stand and watch, the slightest hint of a smile tugging at his lips.
“You know, this is how you end up with hypothermia,” he said, taking a few more steps to close the distance between them. She was pleasantly surprised to hear his voice and she smiled a bit, tossing another weed to the side and shrugging.
“I know but I’ve gotta finish this now or else it’ll be a nightmare when I get back,” she replied, squinting through the rain as she finally turned to look at him. Her breath caught in her throat and she hoped that the rain masked it. She had always thought he was attractive but this was on another level. His t-shirt clung to his toned body, accentuating each muscle and his dark hair was pulled back into a slick, wet bun. For a second she found herself jealous of the raindrops dancing on his skin.
She snapped out of the trance when he spoke again, “I could help, if you want.”
“You don’t have to do that, we don’t need the both of us getting hypothermia,” she replied, but he was already kneeling down beside her. Her bottom lip caught between her teeth, trying to hold back the grin that stretched across her face.
“I can’t get any wetter then I already am, just point me in the right direction,” and for the first time he smiled at her. He couldn’t help it, she was was so unapologetically herself he was in awe.
She showed him which plants were good plants and which ones needed to go, and within minutes the garden was spotless. Only once the last weed was pulled did the rain finally break.
“Go figure,” Bucky muttered, offering his right hand to help pull her up.
“Hey, no rain, no flowers,” she shrugged with a smile. “Although… this isn’t a flower garden these are all veggies. Or at least they will be soon. I guess some of them do still flower before they’re veggies... Well, some of them will flower if you let them grow for too long too. Sorry now I’m rambling about plants,” she blushed, wiping some of the rain off her forehead with the back of her hand. She didn’t realize it but she left a thick streak of dirt across her skin, lion king style.
This only made Bucky grin harder.
“Uh you have a little dirt, right here,” he told her, pointing to his own forehead. When she tried to wipe it off she only made the streak bigger and he laughed. He couldn’t help her either, his own hands covered in dirt but he was struck with an idea. He pulled off his shirt and stepped closer to her. “May I?”
The redness in her cheeks darkened and she felt heat creeping up her neck as she tried not to stare at the glistening supersoldier. “Uh yeah, thanks,” she smiled, and with her permission he used his rain-dampened shirt to wipe the dirt from her forehead. When she looked up their eyes met and for a split second they both forgot what they were supposed to be doing. Bucky snapped out of it first.
“We should probably get inside before we really do get hypothermia,” he mumbled, his lips twitching again into a small smile. She hadn’t realized how close they really were until she felt his breath on her face and she cleared her throat stepping back a little bit. He silently hoped he hadn’t crossed a line, been too forward, but when she smiled back his worries dissipated.
“If you’re interested, I’ll probably have to do this again in a few weeks. Minus the rain hopefully,” she said as she turned to head back into the compound.
“It’s a date,” he replied and started back alongside her.
Steve met them at the door with towels and an all-knowing, shit-eating grin.
They didn’t get to talk much over the next few days as she had to spend all of her time prepping for the mission. It was predicted to be a quick one, her and Nat would take a short flight to Guadalajara, gather some intel and head back home. They planned on being back within a few days.
Bucky knew she was an extremely skilled agent, but that didn’t mean that he was any less worried. Skill didn’t mean anything if you got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, he knew that better than anyone else. He found her just as she was just getting ready to leave and she smiled when she saw him, grabbing her boots and pulling them on.
“Hey soldier,” she said before standing up to meet him. “I’m glad I caught you before we left. I was wondering if you would mind just keeping an eye on the plants? I watered them all today so you don’t really need to do anything with them, but I would feel better if I knew someone that I trusted was watching them.”
He couldn’t help the smile that crept up his lips when she said she trusted him. “Yeah of course. As long as you promise me you’ll be careful.”
“I always am,” she smiled up at him before pulling her bag over her shoulder.
“That’s a lie and you know it,” Nat added, walking up to them.
(Y/N) rolled her eyes. “Okay fine, but I promise to be careful this time.” She wrapped her hand around Bucky’s right forearm and gave it a light squeeze. “I’ll see you in a few days.”
Bucky nodded, not trusting himself to say anything else. If he had only known then what the next few days had in store for her, he would have told her so much more.

22/03/2022-Peacock, Red Kite, spider and more at Lakeside and home
I did a walk around the eastern meadows of Lakeside today a slightly shorter walk which I often call the butterfly one in the season and today it was all about butterflies as in this brilliant run of weather there continues to be so many more about. Walking in the meadows and in bits of grass outside the country park, as I enjoyed in the first lockdown on working from home days with the other bits of grass, with the weather being like this too I found it very reminiscent of two years ago this week the very early days of Covid lockdown. So this is a nice moment to think of those sunny days, neighbourhoods clapping on a Thursday night, repeats of television shows to fill schedule gaps, everyone coming together and appreciating the natural world more in quieter times and a spring livening up as it is this year, symbolic of that extraordinary time and think of all those so sadly lost and those who’s lives were so profoundly impacted by the pandemic as well as feel thankful for all the heroes in the NHS, other key workers and those doing the incredible work to develop vaccines.
I was determined to with my macro lens with me for the walk get my first 2022 butterfly photo, and I had an inkling Peacock might be the first species I photographed this year. I picked up where I left off then as in an area between the bowl to the east and the steam railway track to the west I saw my first Peacock of the year at the end of yesterday’s longer lunch time walk but I couldn’t quite get a picture and didn’t have time to hang around to try more for it. It was amazing when today I found a Peacock was in this area, possibly the same one, and I felt so fulfilled taking in this striking insect with such rich colour and the thrill of trying to get a photo of it. It captivated me for those few minutes and I was pleased to take the fourth and fifth pictures in this photoset of this butterfly among one other which I tweeted on Dans_Pictures tonight. An amazing moment. I felt good to secure butterfly photos in this run of weather.
I did see another Peacock on the walk and also saw Small White and Brimstone nicely which was exciting.
The macro lens came in useful for flowers with a nice variety around now on the walk including bright blue speedwell, lesser celandine fittingly given the anniversary of the brilliant Self-Isolating Bird Club being formed which I have loved being a part of since 2020 as a video about this flower by Chris Packham was the beginning of this inspirational club which has helped so many which its been great to reflect on lately with feeling reminiscent of 2020, red deadnettle, dandelions looking great again and daisies like the ones in the first picture I took today in this photoset looking radiant in the pleasing and bright sunshine. I also a little bit along the road beside Lakeside enjoyed taking the eighth picture in this photoset of some cow parsley. A unique and pretty plant that after I learnt them last year have come to represent the hopeful days of spring for me which I noticed recently on working in the office days when going past it so great to get a macro photo taken of it. The roadside grass is looking very colourful with red deadnettles, speedwell and lesser celandine looking nice there too. The camellia in flower, tulip, forsythia, daffodils and others looked great in and around home and seen from my room today again.
The Lakeside walk wasn’t without bird moments with Blue Tit and Blackbird seen well not for the first time this year on this walking route as well as Robin really well, Collared Dove, Black-headed Gull when looking down to the lakes and possibly a Green Woodpecker. It was also brilliant to hear also key spring time birds and also key birds of that early lockdown period for me Chiffchaff in full voice a great spring moment. I also heard House Sparrows chirping and at home today I enjoyed seeing Starling including a little feeding frenzy, Collared Dove, Woodpigeon and Carrion Crow and Magpie really well on roofs out the back.
Spring has ramped up in the landscape it seems with the bright blossom and rich and delicious green taking over the landscape so well and shining so amazingly in the sunlight they were just mesmerising scenes to see. I took the second, third, sixth and seventh pictures in this photoset of views at Lakeside at lunch time.
At home today also this afternoon I got a cracking view of a Red Kite soaring over seen from my window, a bird that is often around at this time of year. It was epic to see this gigantic bird one of my favourites sailing through the sky it really was a cracking view. I managed a record shot the ninth picture in this photoset of it. I also saw a spider coming down the other side of my window looking brilliant against a bright blue sky today and then as the sun lowered in the sky this evening its web looked lovely with the light hitting it which I took the tenth picture in this photoset of. I hope you all had a good day.

plant dads sam and bucky fic that absolutely no one asked for. you can read this as a one-shot but it’s part of a longer thing i’ll post on ao3 only when it’s complete. if you’re curious, this is what the pothos (heart-shaped leaves) looks like. the other plant is a crimson queen hoya
