Tumblr media

The ruling and opposition parties have discussed the need for a swift review of a bill that will allow K-pop superstars BTS and other prominent pop celebrities to substitute their mandatory military service with other public services, a lawmaker said on Tuesday. Rep. Sung Il-jong of the People Power Party, who serves as executive secretary for the National Assembly Defense Committee, told MBC radio that he and his Democratic Party of Korea counterpart recently discussed the need to swiftly review the bill pending in the National Assembly. "Since it is a matter related to fairness and the national interest, I don't think there will be any disagreement between the ruling and opposition parties," Sung said. His remarks suggested that the two main parties have a positive stance on the bill. All able-bodied South Korean men between the ages of 18 and 28 are required to carry out compulsory military service for about two years. Exemptions have been granted to international award-winning athletes and classical musicians for their roles in elevating the country's reputation overseas. There has also been talk of whether BTS members should be allowed to carry out alternative military duty in recognition of their contribution to South Korea's national image with their unprecedented Billboard-topping hits.

BTS's SUGA candidly shares his thoughts on Korean music shows
Tumblr media
Posted by Yaki-Jones - August 1 (2021) BTS's SUGA candidly shared his thoughts on Korean music shows. On July 31st, Weverse Magazine released SUGA's interview. One of the questions prompted the BTS member to talk about the necessary steps for the artists who follow after BTS. SUGA replied, "The way artists promote seems so difficult. They make an appearance on a different music show every day once the promotional period begins, meaning the artists are exhausted and that fatigue often leads to injuries as it adds up." He continued, "That kind of music show is for promotional purposes, so it's not like the artists can earn a proper income from them. Further, if there's no visible outcome despite all the promotions they will inevitably lose morale. If possible, it'd be nice to show a really high-quality performance, even if it's just a single stage, but in this environment, I'd say that's pretty difficult. And since our job doesn't fit the common conception of work, there are ambiguous boundaries when it comes to issues of legal protection as well. We need a lot of improvements to be made to the industry and its system." Many netizens agreed with SUGA's saying that the way artists promote is tough with all the music show appearances and improvements to the system are very much needed. However, some expressed their disappointment saying, "There are groups who are dying to perform and promote on music shows", "I wholeheartedly agree with what he said but I am still sad because this feels like he put a nail in the coffin of BTS's promotions in Korea.", "I think he should have said things like this in a different interview that has a wider audience, not in the interview with his label for his fans." What do you think?

BTS: 'We want to help future generation with public role'
K-pop 14:35 - July 25, 2021 - By Lee Minji
Tumblr media
SEOUL, July 25 (Yonhap) - South Korean superband BTS said it hopes to play an active role in helping youths around the world amid global challenges like economic hardships, inequality and the ongoing pandemic.
The seven-piece group, which has rewritten history by ruling Billboard charts and becoming the first Korean pop group to receive a Grammy nomination, was recently named for the public diplomacy role.
With the appointment, the group is set to attend major international meetings, including the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled for September, as well as join campaigns on issues like the environment, poverty and diversity, according to Cheong Wa Dae.
"We are millennials ... We grew up with the youth," RM said in an interview that aired on local broadcaster SBS late Saturday, noting how the members were all born between 1992 and 1997.
"When there's a crisis and if there's something we can do and have the power to do so -- however weak that is -- we thought we would like to do it. We (agreed to the appointment) with a heavy but joyous heart. We will do what we can and return after accomplishing our mission," he said.
The appointment is the latest in the group's active profile in social campaigns. The septet has voiced support for various global campaigns like the Black Lives Matter movement and stood up against violence toward Asian Americans.
Most recently, the group incorporated international sign language into its music video and performance for "Permission to Dance," a gesture that was seen as supporting the deaf community.
"We chose international sign language wishing that we could spread positive energy and give hope and comfort to people around the world," J-hope said.
Regarding the dance challenge the group recently kicked off with YouTube, the BTS member said he hopes to gain energy from the campaign while also giving off positivity and hope to people who take part in it.
The superband, which recently scored back-to-back No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Butter" and "Permission to Dance," did not give away much on its next song but hinted it would be something relevant as all of its songs have been.
"BTS is a team that lives the present. We've grown based on the things and sentiment of the moment ... (The messages we wanted to give) also had to come from what we were going through and feeling," RM said.
Tumblr media
Jungkook said the team's next project will also come from this context.
"The songs and albums we've released were born according to our thoughts and feelings of the moment. I think we will hopefully release a good song after deliberating on what we should talk about," he said, adding that the group is also undecided on whether to release a Korean or English song.
Most of the group's main tracks that were released recently -- such as "Dynamite," Butter" and "Permission to Dance" -- were sung in English with the exception of "Life Goes On," which was the main track for "BE," an album the septet took part in producing. All four songs debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's main singles chart.

Netizens are saying that BTS's "Butter" melody sounds similar to a Nintendo game released in 1992
Tumblr media
Posted by Sophie-Ha - July 19, 2021
BTS's "Butter" is the group's biggest song to date as it topped Billboard's HOT 100 for the seventh consecutive week.
The boy group has also released the CD version of "Butter," which sold a total of 1,975,364 copies during the first week of sales. Each time the boy group releases new material, they have made headlines as they have become the center of global attention.
However, some netizens were a bit disappointed as they discovered "Butter" sounds very similar to a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game that was released in the 90s. The game 'Monster in My Pocket' produced by Konami was released in 1992 and is based on a comic book series.
A song composed by Kozo Nakamura and Hiroshi Takeyashu and titled "Tower Catastrophe" from level 4 of 'Monster in My Pocket' has been gaining attention. This is because the melody of the song is vastly similar to BTS's "Butter."
You can listen to the song below:
youtube
As soon as the melody for this song plays, the listener would be able to automatically sing "Smooth like butter, like a criminal undercover..." in their head. After finding this NES game music, netizens have expressed shock at the similarities in the melodies.
Netizens commented, "F*** lol," "What is this, it's the same," "It's so same," "I can hear the beginning entrance part," "It does sound similar, but I think we need to wait for an official statement from the company," " "I thought it was Butter,"  and "Even an ordinary person can here the similarities."
Netizens are wondering if the foreign production team behind "Butter" purchased the sampling rights to 'Monster In My Pocket's "Tower Catastrophe" and are awaiting a response from Hybe.

BTS replaces Billboard No. 1 with new song 'Permission to Dance'
July 20, 2021
SEOUL, July 20 (Yonhap) - South Korean superband BTS has added another feat to its copious list of accomplishments: replacing one of the group's own songs at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 and scoring back-to-back debuts atop the list. The septet's latest number "Permission to Dance" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard's main singles chart, becoming the group's fifth song to top the chart.
Tumblr media
"Permission To Dance" officially debuts at No. 1 on this week's #Hot100. It earns the group its fifth career No. 1 hit, and helps them become the first act to replace themselves at No. 1 since @Drake in 2018," Billboard said on its Twitter account on Monday (U.S. time). BTS' new No. 1 song drew 15.9 million U.S. streams and 1.1 million radio airplay audience impressions, while selling 140,100 downloads in the week ending July 15, it added. The catchy track replaces "Butter," which debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated June 5 and stayed on the throne for six more weeks. With the latest feat, BTS now has 13 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 records, also including three times with "Dynamite" and one each with "Permission to Dance," "Life Goes On" and "Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat)."
Released on July 9, "Permission to Dance" is the group's second collaboration with British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was included in the physical album for "Butter" along with instrumental versions for both songs.
The song immediately made a splash upon release, reaching No. 2 on Spotify and topping iTunes top songs charts in 92 regions. Most recently, it debuted at No. 16 on the British music chart Official Chart's top 100 singles list.
BTS members have noted how the song is something for everyone. Calling the English track a "song for everyone to enjoy easily," Jimin said it "carries the message that everyone should dance freely even if they have had a tough day in real life." RM, meanwhile, said it is a "song that will get everybody's heart pumping and dancing" and called it a gift from Sheeran.
The BTS song "Butter" dropped to No. 7 on the latest chart, according to Billboard. It marked the longest No. 1 streak achieved by a group since 1995, when "One Sweet Day," a song by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey and R&B group Boyz II Men, spent 16 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.
BTS became the first Asian artist to stay at No. 1 for longer than four straight weeks on Billboard's main singles chart. Japanese singer Kyu Sakamoto held the title with "Sukiyaki" in 1963.

Music critic Doheon Kim names "Epiphany" as one of BTS's best songs and praises Jin's solo music
Posted by k-timez - 15.07.2021
Tumblr media
Professional music critic Doheon Kim has announced his Top 5 of the best BTS songs of all time. And as the 4th best song, he picked Jin's solo song - "Epiphany." "A part of Jin's charisma is that he helps make other BTS members shine. In the beginning he sings about uncertainty and doubt in himself. But, when you look at the lyrics later, he was also symbolizing overcoming challenges through loving and trusting himself and walking towards bigger success and growth. It symbolically portrayed BTS' journey."
Besides that, Doheon Kim mentioned Jin's self-written song "Abyss," which was released earlier in December. Doheon also confessed that he really likes Jin's solo music.
Tumblr media
"Epiphany" became a symbol of the Love Yourself era: the sunrise of BTS's success. Interesting that Jin was the one who started developing that certain philosophical vision of life. He became the start of it. Jin and his solo song "Epiphany" also made the first steps in bringing huge awareness to the topic of "self-love" in South Korea. As for the solo songs, Jin definitely stands in his own league. The tandem of otherworldly vocals, unique sound, emotional delivery, the philosophical message makes Jin's solo works very popular among not only fans but also the general public. "Epiphany" gained over 130M streams on Spotify despite being almost the last track in the album. Jin is the 2nd most-streamed BTS member on all Korean platforms. "Epiphany" is also known for being the only BTS solo stage that became a reason for such huge furor every time it was being performed live.
